Metal Gear Survive delayed into 2018

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 01:30 PM PDT

The Kojima-less team making Metal Gear Survive needs a bit more time to finish up the game so Konami is delaying the PC, Xbox One, and PS4 release until "early 2018."

This is probably for the best. I just played the multiplayer component of Metal Gear Survive at E3 and outside of my general qualms with what's shaping up to be a grindy shooting gallery, there was something slightly low rent and off to how it felt, despite running in the same engine as Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain. And despite the initial planned 2017 release window, Konami still isn't even ready to talk about the single-player.

Stick that bun back in the oven.

Hands-on with Metal Gear Survive was a bummer

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 01:01 PM PDT

Konami's attempt, in its post-Hideo Kojima future, to squeeze a little more blood out of everything the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain team built is frustrating. It's not necessarily bad, but it does feel uncanny, just a little bit wrong, and a little more janky and stiff than its beautifully tuned predecessor. You couldn't tell from the pre-demo presentation that talked about how proud Konami was to, "bring the survival genre into this brand."

Nobody asked for a Metal Gear Solid survival game with co-op, and my initial fear that this was Horde mode padded out with stealth isn't even sufficient because I did stealth for about 30 seconds in a 30-minute demo.

To run it back, Metal Gear Survive is a "survival action" game set after Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. A wormhole opened up, swallowing the surviving Militaires Sans Frontières soldiers and sending them to an alternate reality that looks like a mangled version of The Phantom Pain. It does have a single-player campaign, notably not directed by Kojima, but Konami isn't talking much about the single-player and only had us try out the multiplayer. At the end of a successful run, a wormhole opens up and drops a bunch of cardboard boxes filled with loot, which is used for your single-player campaign. The goal is to "scavenge for resources, craft items, and ultimately find your way back home."

In Survive, you're playing as a custom-built character, but we had four prebaked ones to choose from for the co-op demo. I went with a shaved-head woman who came equipped with an assault rifle, bow and arrow, and electric baton. One thing I'd find out quickly: melee weapons are a huge part of Survive, because I ran out of ammo during the first of three enemy waves (this was specifically truncated for E3).

All four teammates start out in a blank, white room with infinite ammo and friendly-fire off (shooting your friends during the real thing will hurt them). It basically plays like Phantom Pain, but without the robust CQC, at least for the time being. If you're meleeing, you're  meant to be doing it with giant polearms and the like. The main difference is that there are defense mechanisms (fences, guard towers, fire traps, etc.) mapped to L1 and R1 that you'll want to place in the world when you enter the defense stage.

Once we all had a handle on what we were doing, we stood in a circle and started the mission. The first objective was to "infiltrate" the only significant structure nearby and set up a generator, which we'd then have to protect for three rounds. Infiltration, at least in this demo, took the form of shooting two zombified enemies with my bow (and retrieving the arrows -- ammo is scarce); I'm not sure what my team was up to, but after that we were already in. White arrows lined the ground of the facility showing where enemy waves were going to be funneled toward us, so we threw up traps and fences there, making a point to save some for subsequent rounds.

A "side-mission" popped up between waves one and two, which required me to leave our fortified position to a spot where two more mutants were hanging around. I clubbed them to death and found something I interacted with, which spawned an ammo box back at our base. Aside from the ammo squeeze and typical tower defense punctuated by new enemy types, Survive has things like stamina restriction, hunger and thirsts, and a bunch of numbers-based stuff that didn't seem to impact this condensed demo.

We hung around all three waves, S-ranked it, and I ended up the top-scoring member of our team, but the whole thing felt lifeless, even with two Walker Gears stomping around in the last round. It's like someone ran The Phantom Pain through the clunky, grind-heavy Let it Die. And it just makes me want to play the former instead. Or Metal Gear Online. Maybe the full game will do some interesting things, but this taste doesn't have me optimistic.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has limited potential

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 01:00 PM PDT

After Marvel and Capcom had a rights fallout some time after the release of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I had assumed we'd never get another entry to the series. I had resigned myself to that disappointment until Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was surprisingly announced for release this year. My thoughts on it have been bouncing back and forth with each reveal trailer, but now that I was able to put in a solid hour with it, I'm definitely more worried than I was before.

Although Infinite has greater ambitions than past entries, and the new core additions to gameplay can be fun to figure out, there's an overall sense of something unseen tightening its grip on the screen.

ARMS' new character looks like an F-Zero racer

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 11:45 AM PDT

Nintendo did a pretty solid job of expanding the rather basic launch of Splatoon with some DLC throughout 2015. While it may have been on-disc, all of it was free and it worked in a way to keep players engaged with the title over a longer period of time then they might have otherwise. While I'm not sure if ARMS has DLC on the cartridge, Nintendo is holding to the same plan with all post launch being free and releasing in increments over the rest of 2017.

The first of many new characters is Max Brass (an existing boss character), a guy that looks straight out of F-Zero. I mean, he basically resembles Black Shadow in stature and Captain Falcon in terms of costume. Anyway, his in-game lore is that he's a returning champion who is looking to defend his title against new comers like Spring Man and Ribbon Girl. His arms are also made out of his previous championship belts, because subtlety is not his forte.

Destiny 2's PS4 content will eventually come to PC, Xbox One

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 10:00 AM PDT

PlayStation owners of Destiny: Rise of Rion (which was only on XB1/PS4) got some exclusive content that never ended up coming to Microsoft's platforms.

It looks like for the sequel, Bungie isn't going to omit content from everyone else, falling inline with what they did originally pre-Iron, with few exceptions (Zen Meteor). While not the most informative quote, the game's director (Luke Smith) took to Twitter to proclaim, "Destiny 2's PlayStation exclusive content will arrive on Xbox One and PC in 2018."

Call of Duty: WWII's multiplayer sheds all the sci-fi clutter to great effect

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 09:00 AM PDT

I haven't felt competent at Call of Duty in quite some time. With the series' move towards the futuristic came an ill-fated attempt to capture imaginations of the eSports crowd, overcrowding the once-storied Call of Duty multiplayer suite with each new installment. The further this franchise strayed from God's light, the worse I became. Remember when Black Ops III had different "heroes" with ultimate abilities?

All of a sudden, there was a "meta" to the base level of Call of Duty. What had once been a pick-up-and-play arcade shooter became a fast-paced game of rock paper scissors where you had to worry more about counter-loadouts than choosing the items that fit your playstyle – all exacerbated by a UI that resembles this Mega64 parody more than anything else. I like the idea of bringing Call of Duty to the future! Black Ops II is probably still my favorite game in the series, with Advanced Warfare not close behind. But these games needed to be dragged back in time, if only to make sure the rotating cast of developers would be forced to stick with recognizable iconography and weapons that didn't require extensive counter-picking.

Maybe it was the positive fan response to early Battlefield 1 footage that inspired the switch back to World War II, or maybe this change was always in the cards and moving away from the maligned future era is a serendipitous way to earn a little more goodwill for the series. Whatever the reason, his heart or his shoes, Call of Duty: WWII brings back the kind of straightforward multiplayer this series has been missing for so long. And because I'm uncomfortable with how glowing that last sentence was – yes, it's mondo uncomfortable to be playing as Nazis in the year 2017.

We went to Super Mario Odyssey's New Donk City, and it's better than we could've imagined

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 08:30 AM PDT

Super Mario Odyssey is weird. It took all of 30 seconds before we switched out of Mario's traditional garb and into a pinstripe suit and fedora. Many times, we threw Mario's hat at a Bullet Bill and then turned into that Bullet Bill. We spent time reuniting misplaced band members; the bass player was on a floating park that we could only get to by turning into electrical current.

We had our temporary visitor visa to New Donk City, and we want to become permanent residents. All it took was a 20-minute demo before we were convinced. Our stay was brief, but Jordan and I are confident that Super Mario Odyssey is shaping up to be a really odd gem.

Super Mario Odyssey has a limited co-op mode

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 08:00 AM PDT

Similar to how Super Mario Galaxy handled multiplayer, Super Mario Odyssey will feature a co-op mode that lets player two take control of Cappy, Mario's now sentient hat. When active, Cappy will float around the environment separate of Mario and be able to collect various pick ups as well as defeat enemies. Cappy will also be invincible, because he's a bad ass like that.

The game's director, Kenta Motokura, said he was inspired to create this feature due to the Switch supporting two players straight out of the box. While I do love that feature, I'm not sure it will work well in a fully 3D platformer where camera control is tricky. Apparently both players can manipulate the camera with the split joy-con, so maybe its not that big of an issue.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT's 3-on-3 battles are a huge mess

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 07:30 AM PDT

As one of the more pressing titles I've been looking forward to playing ever since watching trailers for its arcade release, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is a game I'm glad exists. Playing it, on the other hand, is a totally different story. Even with the many hours I've put into the two previously released PSP titles in the series, I still had trouble gauging exactly what was going on.

Gorgeous as the animation and stage layout may be, I couldn't possibly enjoy them underneath a sea of meters and systems I had too little time to fully comprehend. But then a Leviathan showed up, so that's cool.

Wild Guns Reloaded is coming to PC next month

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 07:00 AM PDT

Wild Guns Reloaded seemed like one of those flash in the pan releases on PS4, but I still boot it up every so often when I feel like low key blasting some dudes in a western setting. PC folks will get a chance to partake too, as Natsume has announced this week that the game is coming to Steam on July 14.

Priced at roughly 1,800 yen (a price hasn't been announced, but converting to USD, that's roughly $15) it'll have dual language support, and it looks like it'll have all of the bells and whistles from the PS4 re-imagining. If you have someone to play with locally it's a good pickup!

Get a quick look at Destiny 2's PC controls

Destiny 2 will launch on PC October 24, and that's a big deal for a lot of people. It's a few weeks after the game's console launch in September, but Destiny developer Bungie has stated the delay is to "satisfy the PC gaming audience."

While PC players will have to wait until August to get their hands on the space shooter's beta, at least there's plenty of time to internalize the game's control scheme.

The Art of Broken Age is a perfect companion to the game

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 06:00 AM PDT

It feels like forever ago that Broken Age (Act 1Act 2), one of the first great Kickstarter successes, actually came out. It kind of was as it came out in January 2014 (which is "forever" in gaming years), but its art style stayed with me even if some of its puzzles didn't.

A newly released art book from Dark Horse Books makes that even easier to do.

Prepare to question reality in upcoming Call of Cthulhu game

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 04:30 AM PDT

Cyanide Studio's upcoming Call of Cthulhu has all the trappings of a game steeped in the unknowable horrors of H.P. Lovecraft's Weird Fiction. That's a good thing, of course, considering that its name is lifted directly from the author's work. There's a certain pedigree associated with the Cthulhu branding, and judging by its latest trailer, the Focus Home Interactive-published title looks more than capable of carrying on the legacy of Outer Gods and rapid descents towards insanity.

Review: Mighty Gunvolt Burst

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 04:00 AM PDT

The Mighty No. 9 "franchise," which already had a live action series, toys, and a heap of other cross-media projects planned, is on life support. The tepid response from both fans and critics alike have given birth to more memes than praise, from the "pizza prom night" commercial to the "it's better than nothing" quote. Heck, even a spinoff game that was given out for free with Azure Striker Gunvolt upstaged it.

Enter the fully fledged Mighty Gunvolt Burst, once again crafted by Inti Creates, to help make Mighty No. 9 somewhat relevant again.

Tom Cruise's excessive creative control on The Mummy may have hurt the film

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 03:30 AM PDT

The Mummy isn't doing so hot. Poor reviews and a lackluster box office have put the entire Dark Universe cinematic universe in jeopardy. That might not be a bad thing, though. I mean, do we really need an Invisible Man movie starring Johnny Depp? Think about it. There's plenty of blame to go around--a weak script, an inexperienced director, the fact it's a mummy movie--but it turns out Tom Cruise may be most to blame.

According to an exclusive report by Variety, Cruise had an excessive amount of creative control built into his contract (aka Cruise Control®). This included script approval, post-production input, and even some say over The Mummy's marketing and release. While Universal had some qualms about the project, they trusted Cruise's vision anyway. Universal execs may not be making great decisions these days; for instance, they want to make this Dark Universe thing happen and think people want to see an Invisible Man movie with Johnny Depp in it.

To be fair, Cruise could be seen as trying to save a troubled picture by running a lot and acting like someone half his age. I mean, it worked for the Mission: Impossible franchise, right? What I'm saying is The Mummy was probably doomed regardless, and we just wound up with Tom Cruise-flavored doom.

Give the full report at Variety a read to learn more about Cruise's creative decisions. Bonus: Read about an awkward pre-screening speech Cruise gave last week in New York. If anyone can find video of this, please post it in the comments.

The saga of broken Mighty No. 9 promises might end, portable versions, physical rewards still in the works

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 01:00 AM PDT

After nearly a year since its release, and close to four years since its Kickstarter campaign, Inafune and his crew might actually be delivering on their full promises from the Mighty No. 9 project.

Late last night backers received an email detailing some loose ends, including the handheld versions, which are "not canceled," as Level-5 Comcept is "still in the process of porting" them. Evidently they went back into development in May and they're planning on releasing them in "2017." Backers were not updated until this point on the state of the portable editions.

Oh, and those physical rewards that we assumed were outright canceled? They're still being "worked on," too. They're trying to ship them out by mid-August 2017, and Fangamer (who was waiting on Comcept to budge and had their hands tied) will be sending out emails soon to confirm addresses. Comcept also says to look forward to possible "future Beck adventures" (right).

This whole affair has been a crash course on how not to handle a Kickstarter -- I wouldn't be surprised if Level-5 was basically like "get it together" after acquiring them. It's also strange that they didn't even mention that Beck is appearing in Mighty Gunvolt Burst, a better game from Inti Creates which is hitting the Switch eShop later today (and 3DS soon).

Beyond the disappointment of Mighty No. 9's release, Comcept has pretty much destroyed any good will toward them based on how they handled the campaign from start to finish. They could have easily recovered by just chalking it up to a misfire, but now it seems like the company doesn't have any of its priorities straight. We'll see how it does with a second lease on life.

Crossout Update 0.6.0 adds Drivers and Customization Kits

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 06:59 PM PDT

Today, Targem Games' and Gaijin Entertainment's post-apocalyptic Action MMOG Crossout released Update 0.6.0, which introduces levelable 'drivers' to operate the steel beasts constructed by players. Additionally, a new weapon customization system was added, allowing players to further personalize the look of their vehicles.

Before heading to battle, players can now select a driver to operate the vehicle they've constructed. All drivers belong to one of the factions in the game and offer different traits and skills that can be increased in combat. The first driver available to everyone comes from the Engineers faction. Players can unlock more characters by increasing their reputation with the different factions. As drivers increase in level, they learn new skills, this provides various benefits such as the ability to become more accurate when firing machine guns, recharge drones faster or increase armor protection of the whole vehicle.

Additionally, Update 0.6.0 allows fine arts experts to further personalize the looks of their vehicles through customization kits, which are available for the different weapons in game and will make the vehicles they are mounted on look even more impressive. Customization kits can be obtained either by increasing faction reputation, or by purchasing them on the in-game market. Once customized, weapons can freely be changed to another customization if the player has unlocked or purchased the respective kit.

Since the launch of Crossout two weeks ago, players have already created countless of interesting, funny and truly impressive vehicles. Check out some amazing examples on the special section now available on the game's website.

The update also introduced several changes to the game modes, vehicle parts and interface, and players can look for many more comprehensive updates to Crossout in the future, bringing new features and improvements based on player feedback.

Escape from Tarkov Reveals The Hideout

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 06:46 PM PDT

Developer Battlestate Games announced that a new feature for Escape from Tarkov called 'The Hideout' will be available during open beta testing in Fall 2017. The process of escaping from Tarkov is not as quick as it may appear from the outside- players will need a place to settle down to gain strength, store supplies, and stash discovered gear and weapons. Players must readjust utilizing 'The Hideout' features and resources before setting out to achieve the main goal of the game.

Players begin the construction of their 'Hideout' from the ground up. Initially discovered as an abandoned, cluttered bomb shelter without any means of sustaining life, players must continually build and improve aspects of 'The Hideout' modules, including: the power generator, water collection system, ventilation, medical treatment facility, recon center, heating, bathroom and other areas. Players will work to improve various parameters of their characters, such as: out-of-raid health, hydration and energy regeneration speed. Players will also gets special opportunities for the production of medicines, ammunition, and other items from various resources. Recon center improvements provide new opportunities of working with merchants and playing as Scavs, and much more.

There are 13 different 'Hideout' modules in production, and each will have unique bonuses, and require a unique scheme for building. Players will need different resources, access to a variety of merchants and necessary skill levels to unlock the module installation capabilities and the possibilities for their improvement.

The first thing players need to install in their 'Hideout' is the generator. Without proper fuel, production and regeneration of items will be slowed or disrupted. It should also be noted that the size of the cache will directly depend on the level of 'Hideout' cache. Players with an Escape from Tarkov Limited Edition copy will receive the cache of maximum, which is third level.

In addition to the basic modules of 'The Hideout', players can install elite modules that drastically improve living standards and security, accelerate skills leveling, allow production of unique items and resources, and add comfort to your new home. There also is a full-fledged shooting range where players can test their weapons.

'The Hideout' will be an integral part of the game and the out-of-raid processes that characters experience, such as restoring health, size of caches, access to new services of merchants, objects research and events in the world of Escape from Tarkov.

'The Hideout' feature is being developed in parallel and independently from the main course of the company and will launch during open beta testing in Fall 2017.

E3 2017 Wednesday Recap: Bloodstained and Laser League

Posted: 15 Jun 2017 03:11 PM PDT

Wednesday saw the E3 speed pick up and a lot of last-minute meetings fall into place. So much so, there’s too much to talk about and not enough time to do so. You’ll find a lot of Wednesday’s meetings later on the MMOHuts YouTube channel, including a Mount & Blade II Dev Interview. There’s even some exciting Path of Exile information coming. For now, I’m going to touch on two of the many games I spent time with yesterday: Bloodstained and Laser League.

Bloodstained: A Love Letter to Castlevania
edited by Jason Parker (Ragachak)

Editor’s Note: I am beyond salty that DizzyPW got to play this before me. He’s never even played a Castlevania before! – Jason “#Bookplace” Parker.

Bloodstained is a Kickstarted love letter for all things Castlevania. Except its quality is too high to be some random Kickstarted project. If you didn't know any better, you'd feel it was built up by the original design team, as it plays better than anything you could have hoped for. They clearly understand the Metroidvania [a game that combines the exploration of Metroid with the platforming of Castlevania, gaining new powers, abilities, items as you progress] style, particularly Symphony of the Night. Visually, the game is a masterpiece. It almost feels like Blazblue or Guilty Gear turned into a sidescrolling beat 'em up. Unrelated… but that's a truly sick idea. Anything that even remotely makes you think of such a concept is reason for celebration. But “love letters” and “reimaginings” are a dangerous place to walk these days. Remember Mighty No. 9? How it was supposed to be a love-letter to the days of old, when Mega Man was the best action platformer going? Killing bosses and getting new powers? Yeah, I’m trying to forget too. But what is Bloodstained?

This is a man who loves his game.

The lead character, Miriam, seems to be an orphan that was ported into some sort of cultish ceremony to transform her into a whip-wielding super succubus, as orphans are want to do in any game like this. Downside… she's getting some wicked crystalized tattoos that are slowly sapping her lifeform to turn her into a living stalactite. Upside, she can sort of kill demons, absorb their powers ala Megaman, and continue snowballing into a creature of unimaginable power to make those damn cultists and their orphan experimentation demon fetishes pay for their sins. Miriam is our Alucard in this Symphony of the Night style Metroidvania.

While it may have just been due to the short length of the demo, Bloodstained keeps the adrenaline flowing non-stop as random defeated enemies drop… ugh… crystals that impale Miriam rather violently. Sometimes rather sexually. It's a thing that happens. Moans included. One of the designers was walking around with a modified Fedora cracking a whip for fun. These are the kind of people that are all about that lifestyle in their video games. But interdimensional crystallized demon power porn aside, these new abilities you unlock through gameplay are rock solid. You quickly go from an awkward non-double jumping generic beat 'em up character to someone who can double jump, ground pound, Mario Jump off enemy's heads to reach higher secret elevations, and other more unusual things like throwing magical fireballs and/or magical monkeys. Magical monkeys do work. Don't knock them!

Of course, it wouldn't be a proper Castlevania love letter without serious loot. I came across bundles of weapon variety from short range shank knives, to the iconic whip the developer loved so much, to kung fu shoes that turned Miriam into Chun Li. In between are your slow but massive claymore, long range and fast rapier, a morning star, and all sorts of medieval implements of pain, each with varying stats and attack animations to offer no single correct choice, but rather enough options that an experienced player will find use for each depending on the situation. Other chests drop gear and accessories as pure stat bolstering upgrades, which, alongside leveling through mob grinding, will no doubt be par for the course if you don't want to get curbstomped by the arcade fighter level brutal boss battles waiting in store. As a side note, I am so glad that you can use potions in the menu in this. In SOTN, you had to equip them in lieu of a weapon or shield, and activate them in battle, and hope you don’t die as a result. This takes you out of the action, sure, but it is a lot more safe.

Loot is love. Loot is life.

I had the chance to encounter one such boss at the end of the demo, newly revealed at E3. While I made the fight look relatively easy… I assure you it is only because they showed the press a trailer that gave away a lot of her attack chains ahead of time so I at least had a sense of what to expect going in. The boss was that odd in-between spot between being a huge turn on and making me sick to my stomach. Essentially she is a blood mage and a fashionista. What happens when you have a blood mage fashionista? She honestly reminds me of Bayonetta, except she turns blood into their fashion statement. Yea there goes my stomach…

But between the tankiness of the boss, and the huge array of attack combinations, and the just right room to maneuver to reduce damage to extend your life to fight on longer, I can tell that these developers have their finger on the pulse of what long-time Castlevania fans would expect from their boss battles. Overall the whole experience was a ton of fun, controlled nicely, had perfectly atmospheric music, and… honestly, was just a beautiful work of art. Bloodstained is the Metroidvania that everyone ought to have on their wishlist.

Laser League: Don’t Blink

Laser League is a Tron-esque 2v2 arena fighter in the style of a previous indie game we've followed for a number of years known as Just Beats and Shapes. Players select their character from a variety of visually distinct options to enter the two v two arena battle to fight it out in a first to 3 points, 3 match series. The characters all play virtually the same way, with the exception that every so many seconds, they charge an ultimate ability. Ultimate abilities that we saw on display ranged from a long ranged snipe kill shot, to a short range sword slash kill shot, to the ability to go invulnerable and negate damage for a set period, to an AoE stun shield that drops enemies to the ground unconscious for a second and a half, to even the ability to steal enemy laser walls as your own. To explain steal though, we have to explain the primary mechanic of how matches are won.

Live from the Detroit Arena...

As a match plays out, various shapes will begin to appear on the map in a neutral color with a power prism at the center. The first player to run across the power prism activates the shape, expanding its size, filling out its dimensions, and turning it to your team's color for identification as it moves in a set predetermined pattern. If an enemy player touches one of your walls, they explode and vice-versa. However, exploding is not the end. Should your ally be able to run over to your corpse, they can revive you an infinite number of times. To win a point, both members of the opposite team must be exploded at the same time.

Now… this is where it gets trickier. Catching a skilled opponent in one of these moving walls is no simple task. It takes timing, pre-emptive strike gameplay of playing chicken before snagging a power prism while the enemy is too close to escape the expanding radius, and, possibly most importantly, mastering use of the Pac Man style side map openings. You can instantly move from the top to the bottom or left to the right side of the map by entering the openings in the outer perimeter wall for quick escapes, or surprise ganks on the enemy team. Once you have all that mastered, if neither side is falling, then it all will come down to two determining factors. How can you use you and your ally's character special to throw your opponent off their game, and how can you use the map altering power-up cores to ruin their rhythm enough to force a mistake.

Laser League Screenshot - Gameplay

It makes more sense as you're playing.

As a match continues, power-ups will begin to appear on the map that cause utter chaos. From what we saw, there were only a few types of power-ups/map changing pick-ups. But they are wicked to see in action. One power-up swaps the claimed color of all moving walls at the time to the opposite team… instantly without warning. This has a tendency of ending matches in an instant as overconfident teams with full board control can suddenly find themselves in a hellish rat trap. Another pick-up freezes the walls in motion… including newly claimed walls. This can be used alongside some of the projectile walls to rack up multiple impending projectile walls before the power-up ends, restoring time and firing the whole wave of walls across the board at one time. A third power-up seemed to grant boosted movement speed… which can be dangerous before you get used to it.

While the demo we played is still pretty early in development, both the diversity of the character roster and maps was already at a decent state. Gameplay felt responsive and fluid, with death never coming as the result of the character just not responding to my input. Some of the abilities felt a little broken, such as the close range swordsman who could just straight murk you down, which felt counter intuitive to the whole forcing mistakes gameplay of using the moving walls to win matches… but that said, nothing was so overpowered that it was game breaking as neither the sniper or swordsman with their instant kills was ever enough to ensure victory for one side.
