We are blessed with a constant flow of great aviation photos in the digital photography age, but once in a while we come across an image that is truly spectacular and totally unique. The New York Times has revealed that the "low-level lawyer" under criminal investigation for allegedly doctoring materials used to obtain renewals of the Carter Page surveillance warrant is Kevin Clinesmith - who worked on both the Hillary Clinton email investigation and the Russia probe, was part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team, and interviewed Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos.
Clinesmith, a 37-year-old graduate of Georgetown Law, "took an email from an official at another federal agency that contained several factual assertions, then added material to the bottom that looked like another assertion from the email's author, when it was instead his own understanding," according to the report.

U.S. Navy Secretary Richard Spencer said on Friday a Navy SEAL convicted of battlefield misconduct should face a board of peers weighing whether to oust him from the elite force, despite President Donald Trump's assertion that he not be expelled.
"I believe the process matters for good order and discipline," Spencer told Reuters, weighing in on a confrontation between Trump and senior Navy officials over the outcome of a high-profile war-crimes case.
A military jury in July convicted Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher of illegally posing for pictures with the corpse of an Islamic State fighter but acquitted him of murder in the detainee's death. Gallagher also was cleared of charges that he deliberately fired on unarmed civilians.
Although spared a prison sentence, he was demoted in rank and pay grade for his conviction, which stemmed from a 2017 deployment in Iraq.

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper's just concluded Asian tour came amid fast spiking tensions in the South China Sea, with China deploying its newest aircraft carrier while warning Washington against "flexing its muscles" in the contested waters.
Beijing's threat came in response to the US Navy's deployment of two littoral combat ships, namely the Independence-class USS Gabrielle Giffords and USS Montgomery, officially launched to "bolster attack strength in the South China Sea" and ensure China will "abide by international rules."

The Chinese armed forces dispatched warships and warplanes to intercept two U.S. Navy vessels that entered the disputed waters of the South China Sea in the latest confrontation between the two powers over trade ties and Beijing's jurisdiction over other contested territories, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The U.S. Air Force has all but given up on retiring the A-10 Warthog close-air-support jet. Instead, the flying branch is upgrading the tough ground-attackers so they can fight and survive in high-intensity combat.
The Air Force had hoped to begin retiring its 281 A-10s starting in 2015. But Congress blocked the effort. Now the A-10 is safe even as the Air Force considers retiring other plane types.
"Acting Air Force Secretary Matt Donovan stoked speculation that the service will retire the A-10 after announcing that its FY21 budget request will include 'controversial changes' such as the divestment of legacy aircraft," Valerie Insinna reported at Defense News.

The other big weapon in the Chinese arsenal is investment. A former FBI lawyer is under criminal investigation after allegedly altering a document related to 2016 surveillance of a Trump campaign adviser, several people briefed on the matter told CNN.
Yet the situation did not sway an independent Justice Department watchdog from finding the surveillance was valid, sources said.
Still, the possibility of a substantive change to an investigative document is likely to fuel accusations from President Donald Trump and his allies that the FBI committed wrongdoing in its investigation of connections between Russian election meddling and the Trump campaign.

On Thursday, the US House wrapped up a marathon week of public hearings for its impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. With lawmakers headed home for Thanksgiving break, the question on everyone's minds is "what comes next?"
In its rough form, what's next is that the House Intelligence Committee and Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) will compile and submit a report of its investigation to the House Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee hasn't had jurisdiction on the narrow Ukraine-focused impeachment investigation, but it's the body that will decide whether or not to draft articles of impeachment — the "charges" against Trump.
There are no more public hearings on the schedule for now. Of course, this could change if someone else with valuable testimony comes forward. But some Democrats don't want to wait long for a star witness like former National Security Adviser John Bolton — who has said he won't testify unless compelled by a court.

The Republican defense of Mr. Trump became central to the impeachment proceedings when Fiona Hill, a respected Russia scholar and former senior White House official, added a harsh critique during testimony on Thursday. Witness the latest wave of popular unrest engulfing the Islamic Republic. What began Friday as a protest against fuel-subsidy cuts ignited into a full-blown uprising. Cries of "Death to dictator!" rang out from the streets, as did slogans decrying the Islamist regime's foreign interventions ("Not Gaza, not Lebanon, my life only for Iran!"). Gas stations were burned, and video footage from the provinces suggested some local authorities had lost control.
ISTANBUL - A sudden move to raise fuel prices in Iran has sparked nationwide protests over the past week and, in turn, drawn a fierce crackdown by security forces, marking some of the worst violence in the country in years. Scores have been reported killed.

Qatar had advance knowledge on an Iranian attack on four commercial vessels in the Gulf of Oman in May and may have failed to warn its U.S., French and British allies, a western intelligence report alleges.

WASHINGTON — NATO allies worried U.S. President Donald Trump will abandon the Open Skies Treaty have been told the administration views the arms control agreement as a danger to U.S. national security, and that unless those nations can assuage such concerns, the U.S. will likely pull out, Defense News has learned.
At a meeting in Brussels last week, Trump administration officials laid out for the first time a full suite of concerns with the treaty and made clear they were seriously considering an exit. The agreement, ratified in 2002, allows mutual reconnaissance flights over its 34 members, including the U.S. and Russia.
According to one senior administration official, the U.S. delegation presented classified intelligence to the foreign officials to explain its concerns, chiefly that Russian forces are "misusing the treaty in their targeting of critical U.S. infrastructure," and to request help from allies to address those concerns if the treaty is to be saved.

Hundreds of thousands of Colombians took to the streets across the country on Thursday, in protest against President Iván Duque and his right-wing government.
People from many backgrounds—including students, teachers, pensioners and union members—braved the torrential rain to join one of the largest mass demonstrations Colombia has witnessed in recent years, according to multiplemedia reports.
“It was astonishing!” María Camilla, a 23-year-old Colombian who joined the protests on Thursday, tells TIME. “Everyone was outside.”
“I had never been to a march as big as yesterday… It was impressive,” she adds. “There was a party atmosphere, as it usually is in the marches here [in Colombia]. People protected each other, everyone was on the street with the same goal.”
Unlike other protests in Latin America, the protests in Colombia were not fighting for a single issue. Instead, Colombians were voicing their criticism of the government’s lack of action in addressing major concerns over security, corruption and economic inequality among other issues.
The protests, described by organizers as a national strike, were mostly peaceful, but as the sun set, riot police began firing tear gas at protesters—including those who had reportedly blocked bus routes in Bogotá, Colombia’s capital. Three people died on Thursday amid social unrest, according to government officials.

How did the protests start?
Dressed in rain jackets and equipped with umbrellas, thousands of protesters walked the streets of Bogotá on Thursday and congregated in the city’s historic Plaza de Simón Bolívar where they sang the national anthem.
The protests were triggered by a rumored proposal to cut pensions—though it was never formally announced by the government. Colombia’s trade unions announced a general strike on Oct. 10 against the proposal.
The proposed cuts were a watershed moment for national dissatisfaction with President Iván Duque’s government. The President, whose approval rating has dropped to around 30% since he took office in August 2018, has been accused of being ineffectual.

“Duque is a very unpopular president,” Dr. Christopher Sabatini, the senior fellow for Latin America at Chatham House, a U.K.-based think tank, tells TIME.
“He’s seen as being a weak president both in terms of a couple of stumbles — a tax reform that he submitted to Congress and then pulled back [in October]— as well as being somewhat of a puppet for former President Álvaro Uribe Velez.”
Uribe governed Colombia from 2002 to 2010 and backed Duque during his presidential campaign.
“The biggest problem of the Government of Iván Duque is that it is not showing results,” Camilla, who joined protests in her hometown of Cali, tells TIME.
The protesters expressed anger over economic inequality and corruption. There are also deep political divides over the government’s handling of the country’s peace process. Many protesters expressed frustration over what they call the slow rollout of the country’s historic 2016 peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. The Peace Accord formally ended five decades of civil conflict that killed 220,000 and uprooted millions from their homes.
Many are also frustrated with Duque’s lack of action in protecting social leaders and indigenous people, who are being murdered at alarming rates in Colombia. Some demonstrators held rainbow indigenous flags in solidarity, and others held banners listing the names of those killed since 2016.

“There’s a high lack of trust and credibly in the government in reviewing human rights abuses,” argues Sabatini, the Chatham House expert.
Tensions deepened in recent weeks after a government-led airstrike against a camp of dissident FARC rebels reportedly left at least eight children in August. The government had initially denied that any children had been killed, but Roy Barreras, a senator from an opposition party revealed that at least eight children aged between 12 and 17 were killed during an aerial raid. The airstrike led to the resignation of Duque’s defense minister, Guillermo Botero, on Nov. 6.

For Camilla, the attack on the minors was the main reason she went out to protest on Thursday.
“If the peace agreement were being fulfilled, things like that would not be happening,” she says. “There are many guerrillas who relied on the process to re-socialize and this government is slowly letting us return to the worst days of war.”
What do the protesters want?
Because of the broad range of groups joining the protests in Colombia, there is no one set goal.
The environmental groups were marching to demand the protection of grasslands and the prohibition of fracking in the country, while animal rights groups were protesting to ban shark hunting.
Meanwhile, women’s rights groups joined groups of mothers of victims of the conflict in Colombia in demanding gender equality policies, while other groups protested against the government’s rumored pension reform and labor reform.
“Public anger has been simmering for a very long time,” Sabatini says.
Economic inequality is also a major concern. Like in Chile, many in the expanding middle class in Colombia feel left behind as the economy continues to grow, argues Sabatini. Colombians are concerned about possible changes to pension and tax reforms, minimum wage, and the privatization of state companies. The government insists there are no planned pension or tax reforms.

“It is not the economy that grows, as Duque and his friends say,” Gustavo Petro, an opposition senator who ran against Duque for the Presidency last year, tweeted on Wednesday. “It is the profits of the bankers that grow, which means that they are sucking the economy.”
Colombia’s economy is expected to grow by 3.3% for 2019, according the World Bank.
“There was the expectation that the rising tide would lift all boats, but not all boats have been lifted due to a large number of structural issues and exclusion and prejudice,” Sabatini says.
For some, a change of cabinet of ministers would be enough. But for Camilla, the Cali protester, it is not. “The reality is that even if the leaders change, the strategy to address the problems would remain the same,” she says, adding: “We need them to listen to the people, we need Duque to govern for all.”
Has there been any violence?
The mostly peaceful protests turned violent as the sun started to set in Colombia. In Plaza de Simon Bolivar and at the National University in Bogotá, teargas was fired as protesters wielding rocks and bottles and chanting “Get out Duque” battled with riot police.

Clashes also broke out between protesters and security forces near Bogotá airport and in Cali, Colombia’s third largest city, police reported that 23 officers were injured, out of 28 injured nationally. The violence prompted the mayor of Cali to announce an overnight curfew.
Three people were killed on Thursday, Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo said on Friday. Two people died in the city of Buenaventura, where a group of people tried to loot a shopping centre, and a third death was reported in the town of Candelaria, Trujillo said.

How has the government responded?
The Colombian government assigned soldiers to monitor the streets ahead of the marches and closed the country’s border on Wednesday ahead of the strikes.

Prior to the protests, the government repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate violence. Duque called for peace on Wednesday in a nationally televised public address, but said the government would “guarantee order and defend you with all the tools the constitution grants us”.
In a televised address early Friday, Duque said: “Today, Colombians spoke. We hear them. Social dialogue has been a main principle of this government and we need to deepen it with all sectors of society and speed up the social agenda and the fight against corruption.”
How does this demonstration fit in with Colombia’s history of protests?
In October, students and labor unions were demonstrating against the government due to a lack of funding and reforms in their sectors. In the past, protests have failed to attract large turnouts.
“In the days of the civil war, protests were fewer and more limited, there was always the shadow of violence hanging over social movements and social protests,” argues Sabatini. But now, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the street in Colombia, marking a change in the country’s history of protests.
Sabatini argues that this may have been inspired in part by protests happening across Latin America in countries such as Bolivia and Chile. “I do think people are looking across the region and seeing protests and some of them successful,” he says. “It’s capturing public attention.”
Compared to earlier smaller demonstrations organized by students, the protest on Thursday brought together collective support by political, social, labor, indigenous, women’s and student groups.
What next for Colombia?
Sabatini belies that because there is no focused agenda of the protests, they may falter in the coming days.
“The protests have successfully brought together a lot of different groups, but there is no one rallying cry or one coherent social movement organizing so it will be difficult to sustain it in an organized fashion,” Sabatini says.
But, Sabatini and others believe that protests will continue in Colombia and Latin America as a whole. “I think you’ll continue to see, and across the region, the slow boil of protests,” he argues. “They will be more sporadic, more individualized.
(MILAN) — A Milan hospital is exhibiting X-rays of women attacked by men to highlight what one doctor calls the “daily horror” of violence against women.
The San Carlo Hospital mounted the exhibit in its atrium to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which takes place on Monday.
Patients’ anonymity was respected in putting the five X-rays on display, including one showing the large blade of a knife lodged in a woman’s abdomen. Other X-rays show fractured limbs, including a shin bone broken in two.
For the show’s inauguration on Thursday, Dr. Maria Grazia Vantadori, a hospital surgeon and liaison for women suffering violence from husbands, boyfriends, family members or acquaintances, noted that some patients don’t at first consider themselves domestic violence victims. “Often the women who come to the emergency room, not knowing how to label what happened to them, don’t immediately say they have suffered violence,’’ Vantadori said.
But, Vantadori said, “the bodies, the injuries speak for them and recount the spirals of daily horror.”

Only in the last few years have women in Italy started making significant inroads in an uphill cultural and legislative campaign to combat men’s violence against former and current wives and girlfriends, as well as against mothers, daughters and sisters.
As recently as a generation ago, the Italian penal code still called for prison sentences as short as three years for men who killed women out of jealousy. Until 1981, the law sanctioned leniency for male defendants who slayed women to preserve the “family honor.” But a cadre of courageous women, including some horribly disfigured after being doused with acid, are galvanizing other women — and men — to recognize the warning signs of domestic violence and to support those who want to get out of violent relationships.
The Italian Parliament passed anti-stalking legislation in 2009. But there have been cases in which authorities underestimated the danger posed by jealous or vengeful men with whom the women have ended or tried to end relationships.
On Friday, doctors and other hospital staff as well as those coming to the hospital for medical care stopped to view the X-rays, which reflected patient injuries from over the last 10 years, the hospital said.
VogueMexico‘s December issue will feature an openly transgender ‘Muxe’ on its cover, for the first time in its history. Muxes, or Muxhes, are indigenous transgender women (or third gender individuals) who have existed in southern Mexico for centuries. Accompanying the cover, the magazine features a series of editorial portraits, and profile of the Muxe community in the Oaxaca town of Juchitán.
On the cover is Estrella Vazquez, a 37-year-old Zapotec Muxe who says she didn’t know about Vogue until the magazine reached out to her for the story. “Everyone is seeing this cover, everyone is congratulating me,” she told The Guardian. “It’s just hard to make sense of the emotions I’m feeling. It almost makes me want to cry.”
Several Muxes were photographed by Tim Walker, a renowned fashion photographer, in a collaboration between Vogue Mexico and British Vogue. “To be muxe is a duality,” says La Kika, a Muxe and activist who is featured in the Vogue story by Karina González Ulloa. “We carry the role depending on circumstance. It could be that you see me on occasion as a man, but in other occasions as a woman.”
Though not immune to machista culture in Mexico that can include violence against LGBT people — Mexico, Colombia and Honduras accounted for 90% of more than 1,300 LGBT murders in Latin America in the last five years, according to a 2019 study — Muxes in southern Mexico are often seen in caregiver roles and are respected for their work as well as their identity.
Vazquez told The Guardian that she has seen a decrease in anti-transgender attitudes and behavior, and called the Vogue cover “a huge step.”
“There’s still discrimination,” she said. “But it’s not as much now and you don’t see it like you once did.”
The CEO of Ukraine’s state gas company, Naftogaz, is ready to give evidence in a U.S. federal investigation that is reportedly probing the business dealings of Rudy Giuliani, the CEO said in an exclusive interview on Friday.
“I will with a high likelihood be invited to testify in this case,” Naftogaz CEO Andriy Kobolyev told TIME, citing his lawyers and contacts in the U.S. “If I am called, I would be willing to come and testify,” Kobolyev added.
Federal prosecutors are investigating Giuliani for possible campaign finance violations and illegal lobbying, according to reports published in the past week by Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, both of which cited unnamed U.S. officials and sources familiar with the matter.
These reports claimed that the investigation stems from a federal case against two of Giuliani’s associates, Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas, who were indicted last month for allegedly violating campaign finance laws. Giuliani has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
The planned closed-door testimony from Kobolyev, which has not previously been reported, could shed light on recent allegations from U.S. and Ukrainian energy executives that Parnas and Fruman tried to use their connections to Giuliani and the Trump Administration to replace the leadership of Naftogaz, which had resisted their efforts to land a lucrative gas deal in Ukraine.
Asked whether he is preparing to give prosecutors information about Giuliani or about Parnas and Fruman, the executive said, “Both. Everything is connected.”
Giuliani has simultaneously been acting as President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and diplomatic envoy while pursuing his own lucrative business interests. In one or several of those roles, Giuliani has been working with Fruman and Parnas.
While seeking gas deals in Ukraine this spring, Fruman and Parnas also helped Giuliani to pressure the Ukrainian government to open investigations against President Trump’s political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. That campaign was later exposed by an intelligence-community whistleblower, whose complaint sparked the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Trump.
Giuliani, who did not respond to TIME’s request for comment on Friday, has denied allegations of wrongdoing and insisted that he is not involved with a gas company owned by Fruman and Parnas, Global Energy Producers. “I have no personal interest in any business in Ukraine, including that business,” Giuliani told the Journal last week.
Kobolyev declined to comment on what he planned to tell investigators about Giuliani or his two associates: “I would not want to preempt my testimony,” the gas executive told TIME.
A spokesman for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on Friday.
Any testimony from Kobolyev would come on top of the statements that another Naftogaz executive, Andrew Favorov, gave investigators on Thursday in New York City.
Kobolyev interrupted his interview with TIME at his office in Kyiv Friday, saying he wanted to call his colleague Favorov on the phone to ask how his interview with federal investigators had gone, and whether Favorov would be going back on Friday to provide more testimony.
“He finished yesterday,” Kobolyev said after finishing the mid-interview phone call. “He said it was a very unusual experience,” the CEO added, referring to Favorov. “He said he has never gone through questioning like that. I also heard these guys are very, um, very hard, the southern district prosecutors. They’re some of the best in the states.”
Favorov referred questions to a spokesman, who did not respond to a request for comment Friday afternoon.
Citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, CNN reported on Nov. 18 that federal prosecutors in New York had contacted people associated with Naftogaz as part of their investigation of Giuliani. Favorov’s U.S. lawyer confirmed to the Associated Press the following day that his client was planning to meet voluntarily with investigators. The timing of that meeting on Thursday, and the fact that prosecutors had not asked Favorov to come back on Friday, have not been previously reported.
The effort by Giuliani’s associates to install new leadership at Naftogaz came to light in an AP report published on Oct. 8. The report described an international effort by Parnas and Fruman to replace the leadership of Naftogaz, which had resisted the attempts of these two businessmen to export American gas to Ukraine under favorable terms.
Parnas and Fruman were arrested at Dulles Airport last month and indicted for allegedly running an unrelated scheme to funnel foreign money to Republican causes and candidates. Both men have pleaded not guilty.
Despite their arrest and the ongoing investigation of Giuliani in New York, the head of Naftogaz says the political campaign to remove him from office may not yet be over. “Some pressure does probably exist,” Kobolyev tells TIME. “But whether it is connected to past events, something that is still inertia from what happened, from attempts that took place in the spring, I can’t say for sure.”
Venice is reeling from the worst flooding the city has experienced in 50 years, the city is “on its knees,” Venetian Mayor Luigi Brugnaro tweeted as water submerged much of the the famous historical city. The floods penetrated Saint Mark’s Basilica, a 1,000 year old church that is considered to be one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in the world and one of the city’s most famous landmarks.
While floods are a normal part of life in Venice, which is famously built on a lagoon at the edge of the Adriatic Sea, they have never happened with such frequency before. Experts say that climate change is likely to blame. But putting in place protective measures has proven difficult and ironically, the Venetian council voted against a measure to fight climate change just a few moments before their chamber flooded.
Flooding is just one of the many impacts from climate change that is being experienced with more frequency and globally it threatens many vulnerable areas and regions. There is a threat that is not often considered say experts — the damage from climate change to the world’s heritage. Natural and man-made heritage sites throughout the world are in danger of being fundamentally altered, damaged or destroyed by climate change.
Climate change will impact these sites in radically different ways. Some will be hit by flooding, like Venice, others by other extreme weather events or rising temperatures. For instance, George Town, the capital of the Malaysian state Penang faces rising sea levels, landslides and more severe typhoons, whereas the Yellowstone ecosystem in the western United States faces melting snows, more frequent wildfires and a changing ecosystems.
Changes in the ocean will have a profound impact on many of these sites. Warming waters threatens to kill much of the coral in the Great Barrier Reef, while rising sea levels threaten to wash away many of the world’s great archaeological sites — including the Neolithic village Skara Brae in Scotland.
Experts say that the solutions to saving these sites will be varied, although many will be very expensive.
Mechtild Rossler, Director of the World Heritage Centre, tells TIME that countries need to work together to share strategies for protecting heritage sites. UNESCO, for instance, enables countries to “exchange experiences of things that have worked – and things that have not worked.”
Adam Markham, the deputy director of the Climate & Energy program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, tells TIME that if the world wants to save these sites, countries will also need to share financial resources. Although a city as famous as Venice can likely expect massive international support, lesser-known sites may face greater challenges raising money.
“If cities have the engineering structure and the funds available, then they can do a lot to hold it back,” Rossler says. “But particularly in developing much money to manage these cities or these historic sites, they are either dependent on international aid or they’re just not going to be able to adapt.”
To take a closer look at this issue, TIME looked at how the following World Heritage Sites which are in harm’s way because of climate change — and at how scientists, park employees and archaeologists are working to save them.
Venice
Few places in the world are as threatened by climate change as Venice. As the city is built on marshland at the edge of a lagoon, its existence has always required maintaining a careful balance between the city and the natural world. But in recent years, climate change has threatened to throw off the balance.

Venetians have always lived with flooding, often caused by the phenomenon known as “acqua alta” — high water — which are unusually high tides. However, these types of floods used to be relatively uncommon, because the Mediterranean historically has not had significant tides. However, as sea levels rise, these types of tides — and the flooding they cause—have become more common. This November, Venice experience a record three “acqua alta” events in one week according to the Associated Press.
Chiara Bertolin, an associate professor at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, says that the filthy, salty water can get into the precious materials that make up Venice’s buildings and monuments and cause them to expand, crack – or even bubble and explode.
“When salt permeates the materials of these buildings, it crystallizes, and ascends vertically once the weather gets drier,” architect Kobi Karp told Architectural Digest.
Bertolin says that the historic nature of the buildings means that they cannot just replace them with materials that are more resilient and this can make it difficult to take adaptive measures “You need to clean them slowly—very slowly—and not force it to dry,” says Bertolin.
Markham says that one of the frustrating things about Venice is that it already invested billions of dollars in a project — MOSE — erecting 78 floodgates in the Venice lagoon. But while the project was supposed to have been completed back in 2012, it has been delayed by technical issues, bureaucracy and alleged corruption.
“They need to get their act together and at least try it,” says Markham. He warns that no matter what, Venice is likely to lose some of its historic buildings. Water is getting higher and higher into the buildings, and can compromise their foundations, undermining their structural integrity.
“I think there will always be some degree of flooding in Venice. The question is, does that flooding become catastrophic that you just can’t maintain the buildings as they are now,” says Markham.
Skara Brae in the Orkney Islands
Climate change is also threatening archaeological sites around the world. Some of the most vulnerable sites are those along coasts — such as the Neolithic village Skara Brae in Scotland’s Orkney Islands. The village was inhabited from 3200 to 2200 B.C.E., overlapping with the period when Stonehenge was built.
Markham says what makes Skara Brae special is that while most European villages of its age were made of wood, the village at this particular site was made from stone. That means it’s possible to get a better glimpse of how people actually lived —such as the stone bench where they sat, and the remains of their hearth.

Archaeological sites can sometimes be even more vulnerable after they’re discovered because they are open to the elements, Rossler warns. However, in Skara Brae’s case, the biggest danger is that it could be “literally washed away,” she says.
While there’s a sea wall protecting the site, it’s unstable and could eventually be breached; the area not protected by the wall visibly erodes after storms.
“You could wake up one day and it won’t be there,” says Markham.
Scientists are working to measure the extent of the danger to the Skara Brae site. Experts say that some coastal sites could potentially be protected by sea walls, breakwaters and dune restoration. But because there are so many coastal sites just in Scotland, experts warn that it’s protecting them all could be too expensive and take too much time.
Yellowstone
Protecting a large natural space like Yellowstone, which encompasses 12 to 22 million acres (depending on how you measure) in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, is different than protecting a city or historic landmark. Yellowstone isn’t going to be swept into the ocean and vanish, but Markham warns that it could look very different as it is altered by climate change, although the changes may be too slow for most visitors to immediately notice. Over time, the composition of plants and animals that live in the park is expected to change — which may mean the land has less forest and more scrub.

“It’s still going to be an amazing ecosystem, but it’s going to be a slightly different ecosystem,” Markham says. He warns that the scientists and park rangers who want to protect it will have to “go with the flow” as the ecosystem changes.
Changes in the climate can have a domino effect that reaches many aspects of the ecosystem both in the park and in the surrounding region. For instance, changes in snow accumulation and melting rates can reduce the flow of water in rivers that communities outside the region depend on for drinking, agriculture, energy and other purposes. Alterations in the flow can affect fish spawning, and encourage invasive species to expand.
The U.S. Park Service is working to make Yellowstone National Park more resistant to climate change. For instance, as beetles and fungus have damaged the park’s whitebark pine trees, scientists have worked to plant whitebarks which can better resist the fungus. However, whitebark pines are likely to be pushed to higher elevations as temperatures rise, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory.
George Town, the capital of the Malaysian state Penang
As the globe warms, scientists say that unusually strong hurricanes may become more common. In combination with rising sea levels, this is especially threatening to historic neighborhoods in many cities, which were often built low and sit close to the sea.

George Town, the capital of the Malaysian state Penang, is in danger because its historic area is low. The city, which was a colonial town and trading hub, was famed for its multicultural heritage, including unique and varied architecture. However, the buildings are made of wood, which means that they’re susceptible to rotting and insect damage if they get wet. Heavy rainfall, as caused by typhoons, can also lead to landslides, which can flow downhill towards historic areas and the people who inhabit them.
To address flooding, Penang has announced plans to implement a “sponge city model,” which aims to absorb water through permeable surfaces. The project proposal would include connecting green spaces to help soak up and clean runoff and constructing water retention areas and rain gardens. China has also announced plans to implement such sponge city technologies in cities across the country.
The Great Barrier Reef
Few world heritage sites are more vulnerable to the affects of climate change than the Great Barrier Reef northeast of Australia. Coral around the world is increasingly undergoing “bleaching” — going white — which can cause mass die-offs. Corals bleach when under stress, especially from higher temperatures. Researchers have found that there has been an 89% decline in the spawning of new coral in the Great Barrier reef and the situation is likely to only get worse.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that if the globe warms by 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), 70 to 90 percent of the world’s coral would decline—– but if the globe warms 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), more than 99% of coral would be gone.
“Either way, we’re going to lose a lot of coral reefs and much of the Great Barrier Reef will be amongst them,” says Markham.
Australia has launched an effort to help protect the reef, which includes a plan to combat a coral-eating starfish and an initiative to curb runoff. But Markham says that there’s really only one way to actually save it.
“If you talk to the coral reef biologists who are actually there…The only way we can save the Great Barrier Reef is by slowing global warming,” says Markham. “Coral reefs will be totally devastated by climate change. There’s just no doubt about that.”
(WASHINGTON) — The Trump administration is withholding more than $100 million in U.S. military assistance to Lebanon that has been approved by Congress and is favored by Trump’s national security team, an assertion of executive control of foreign aid that is similar to the delay in support for Ukraine at the center of the impeachment inquiry.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday congratulated Lebanon as the country marked its independence day, but made no mention of the hold-up in aid that State Department and Pentagon officials have complained about for weeks.
It came up in impeachment testimony by David Hale, the No. 3 official in the State Department, according to a transcript of the closed-door hearing released this week. He described growing consternation among diplomats as the administration would neither release the aid nor provide an explanation for the hold. “People started asking: What’s the problem?” Hale told the impeachment investigators.
The White House and the Office of Management and Budget have declined to comment on the matter.
The $105 million in Foreign Military Funding for the Lebanese Armed Forces has languished for months, awaiting approval from the Office of Management and Budget despite congressional approval, an early September notification to lawmakers that it would be spent and overwhelming support for it from the Pentagon, State Department and National Security Council.
As with the Ukraine assistance, OMB has not explained the reason for the delay. However, unlike Ukraine, there is no suggestion that President Donald Trump is seeking “a favor” from Lebanon to release it, according to five officials familiar with the matter.
The mystery has only added to the consternation of the national security community, which believes the assistance that pays for American-made military equipment for the Lebanese army is essential, particularly as Lebanon reels in financial chaos and mass protests. The aid is important to counter Iran’s influence in Lebanon, which is highlighted by the presence of the Iranian-supported Shiite Hezbollah movement in the government and the group’s militias, the officials said.
There is opposition to aid to the Lebanese army from outside the NSC. Pro-Israel hawks in Congress have long sought to de-fund the Lebanese military, arguing that it has been compromised by Hezbollah, which the U.S. designates as a “foreign terrorist organization.”
But the Pentagon and State Department reject that view, saying the army is the only independent Lebanese institution capable of resisting Hezbollah.
Outside experts agree. Although there are some issues, Jeffrey Feltman, a former U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, said this week that the assistance should be released.
“The U.S. has some legitimate concerns about the Lebanese Armed Forces’ performance, but the FMF should resume quickly and publicly: both because of the program’s merit in terms of improving the LAF’s counterterrorism performance but also to undermine the Hezbollah-Iranian-Syrian-Russian narrative that the U.S. is unreliable,” Feltman told the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday.
Hale told the impeachment inquiry there were parallels between the Lebanon and Ukraine aid in that the White House refused to offer an explanation for the delays. He said inquiries into the Lebanon assistance since June have been met with silence.
“We just understand there are differences of opinion on this, or there had been,” he said. “And the matter now rests with OMB. I don’t think that the differences currently exist outside of OMB.”
The Lebanon aid was put into Trump’s budget last winter and the State Department notified Congress on Sept. 5 that it would be spent even though the OMB had not yet signed off on it.
The State Department has offered only a cryptic response to queries, defending the assistance but also calling for Lebanese authorities to implement economic reforms and rein in corruption.
“As the sole legitimate defense arm of the government of Lebanon, the United States remains committed to strengthening the capacity of the Lebanese Armed Forces to secure Lebanon’s borders, defend its sovereignty, and preserve its stability,” the department said. “The Lebanon FMF has been apportioned by the administration. No Lebanese expenditures or purchases of military materiel with FMF have been delayed.”
“Apportionment” is a technical term that refers to federal funds that have been appropriated by Congress and obligated by the administration but have not yet been released.
However, several officials said National Security Council staff had deliberately tried to run an end-around of the Pentagon and State Department by demanding a signed presidential determination to release the aid and then slow-walking delivery of the finding to the Oval Office for Trump’s signature. The officials who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
“It’s beyond the pale,” said one official. “This is people at the NSC and OMB trying to insert their own personal ideologies into something that most everyone else supports as a national security interest.”
For years, Benjamin Netanyahu’s followers used to sing in political gatherings “Bibi King of Israel.” Now, it seems like the king might lose his crown. Israel’s longest-serving leader is indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Netanyahu becomes first sitting prime minister in Israel’s history to be charged with bribery. While Bibi called the decision “an attempted coup,” his political rivals are celebrating.
However, the Israeli people have no reason to celebrate. Even if Netanyahu goes, the environmental damage he caused is here to stay. During a twenty-year political career, oil tanker “Netanyahu” has docked in the center of the Israeli mainstream, pouring gallons of hate into our water.
Netanyahu’s reaction to the indictment decision was a wild attack against the Israeli law system. While a “witch hunt” is a common, legitimate, metaphor often used by politicians in his situation, Netanyahu didn’t stop with this expression. His accusation of an “attempt coup” could become a real threat to our democracy, when expressed by a sitting prime minister towards the law system. Not many were surprised by this choice of words. The PM’s reaction yesterday fit his entire career. As we look at the rise and fall of leaders, we usually assume that the fall of a leader symbolizes the end of his era. But that’s not necessarily true. A leader can leave the public sphere the way a child leaves the pool after pissing in it.
Over the course of two decades, Netanyahu has delegitimized major parts of Israeli society in general, and the Palestinian citizens of the country in particular. In 1995, Netanyahu fought against Prime Minister Rabin’s efforts to proceed with Oslo Peace Accords. As the head of the opposition, he didn’t shout incendiary messages to the crowd, but he did stand onstage facing a raving mob, surrounded by a chorus of voices shouting, “Rabin the traitor!” Rabin’s wife refused to shake Netanyahu’s hand at her husband’s funeral, later calling him “the architect of incitement.”
Rabin’s death gave a frightening demonstration to how fast hate-speech turns into action. But the anti-democratic pollution only grew wider, as did the delegitimization of vast numbers of the Israeli public. In his 1996 election campaign, Netanyahu used a new slogan: “Netanyahu—good for the Jews.” The campaign set up a clear dichotomy between “Israeliness” and “Jewishness,” dividing the citizens of the country into Jews and non-Jews. Anti-Arab propaganda became explicitly outspoken in the 2015 elections, when our prime minister warned his followers that “Arab voters are heading to the polling stations in droves.”
A few days after the 2015 elections, a White House warning on anti-Arab rhetoric in Israeli elections was published. After all, it’s not every day that a prime minister tries to cast doubt on the right to vote of 20% of his country’s population. After the U.S. denounced his video, the Israeli PM apologized, saying he had been misunderstood.
The delegitimizations of the Arab citizens was followed by attempts to create fake history. During his speech to the Zionist Congress in 2015, Netanyahu claimed that Hitler’s genocide was inspired by the Palestinian leader of Jerusalem at the time, Haj Amin Al-Husseini. His remarks were criticized by prominent Holocaust scholars, and he later corrected himself.
Where there is hate speech by political leaders, sooner or later there will be a hate crime by “extremists” or “loners.” On Netanyahu’s shift, there were quit a few. One of the most shocking was the murder of a 16-year-old boy, Abu Khdeir, as revenge for the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens. Netanyahu was one of the first to denounce the murder of the Palestinian boy – yet he also denounced the writers who dared to write a TV series about the case. Netanyahu recently called on Israelis to boycott the Keshet and HBO-produced TV drama Our Boys, calling it anti-Semitic. Death threats to the creators were soon to follow the PM’s statement.
But the peak of Netanyahu’s latest hate campaign was his call to put cameras in polling stations, doubting the integrity of Arab voters. Ironically, it was Netanyahu’s insult that got more Arab citizens to vote.
Even if he loses the trial over bribery, Netanyahu has already won: delegitimization of the Arab minority is no longer limited to the extreme right wing. Netanyahu’s rival, Avigdor Lieberman, now considered “central right,” has refused to even sit in a chair randomly allocated to him in the Parliament, as it was next to the head of the Arab party.
A big part of the election impasse paralyzing the country today is another product of minority hate: Netanyahu sticked with the extreme right-wing parties, and preferred these allies over Gantz’s offer to form a more central coalition. He also rejected the idea of a rotation government in which he will be the second to serve.
Quite a few cheers were heard last evening in Tel Aviv, when the indictment decision was first published. However, If we ever want to recover from twenty years of anti-democratic pollution, we have to first acknowledge the fact that our environment is polluted with hate. We have to purify our society from anti-democratic tendencies. It will take a long time, so the sooner we begin, the better.
(LES MUREAUX, France) — Sylvia. Dalila. Aminata. Céline. Julie. Their names are plastered on buildings and headlines across France, calling attention to their shared fate: Each was killed, allegedly by a current or former partner this year.
More than 130 women have died from domestic violence this year alone in France, according to activists who track the deaths.
European Union studies show France has a higher rate of domestic violence than most of its European peers. And frustrated activists have drawn national attention to a problem President Emmanuel Macron has called “France’s shame.”
Under cover of night, activists have glued posters with the names of the dead and calls to action to French city walls. “Complaints ignored, women killed,” read the black block letters on one such sign. They have also posted anti-violence slogans, tagged with Macron’s name.
By the hundreds, women have walked silently through city streets after each new death.
Two years after Macron made a campaign pledge to tackle the problem, his centrist French government has begun to act.
A Justice Ministry report released earlier this month acknowledged authorities’ systematic failure to intervene to prevent domestic violence slayings. On Monday, the government will announce measures that are expected to include seizing firearms from people suspected of domestic violence, prioritizing police training and formally recognizing “psychological violence” as a form of domestic violence.
Women are not the only victims of domestic violence, but French officials say they make up the vast majority.
Lawyers and victims’ advocates say women are too often disbelieved or turned away by French law enforcement. But they’re encouraged by the new national conversation, which they say marks a departure from decades of denial.
“In France, we always have the impression that we are perfect,” activist Caroline de Haas told The Associated Press.
A 2014 EU survey of 42,000 women across all 28 member states found that 26% of French women respondents said they been abused by a partner since age 15, either physically or sexually.
That’s below the global average of 30%, according to UN Women. But it’s 4 percentage points above the EU average and the sixth highest among EU countries.
Half that number reported experiencing such abuse in Spain, which implemented a series of legal and educational measures in 2004 that slashed its domestic violence rates.
Conversations about domestic violence have also ratcheted up in neighboring Germany, where activists are demanding that the term “femicide” be used to describe such killings.
In France, victims and advocates say government action is overdue — and that more training is needed for police who are often ill-prepared to protect women in danger.
Police inaction made national headlines in France after Macron visited a hotline call center in September and listened in on a call with a 57-year-old woman whose husband had threatened to kill her. He heard a police officer on the other end tell the woman he couldn’t help her.
The hotline operator told Macron that such responses weren’t unusual.
Police officers across Europe often dismiss domestic violence as a private matter and fail to intervene at crucial moments, an EU study found this year.
But France is particularly bad, said EU researcher Albin Dearing, who led a study this year that examined domestic violence in seven European countries, including France.
“When it comes to violence against women, it showed actually that police do very little to protect women who turn to them for protection,” he said.
It can take between three weeks and two months for authorities to act on a complaint, leaving the victim “in a very fragile situation,” according to Frederique Martz, who runs anti-domestic violence organization Women Safe.
The Justice Ministry report this month found that 41% of “conjugal homicide” victims studied had previously reported incidents of domestic violence, and 80% of complaints sent to prosecutors went uninvestigated.
“Our system doesn’t work to protect women,” Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet told French TV channel LCI after another French woman was allegedly killed by her husband in Alsace last week.
But Maj. Fabienne Boulard of the national police said many officers respond appropriately to reports of domestic violence. Those who don’t — the ones who react “clumsily” or ask the wrong questions — usually don’t mean harm, she added; they just don’t recognize domestic violence or know how to intervene.
This is particularly true when women receive threats but not yet physical blows, victims say.
Officers “absorb this violence into the category of violence between a couple that is going through a difficult period,” said one woman whose ex-husband repeatedly threatened her and their children. She spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation.
The woman divorced him after years of what she describes as psychological abuse that left her “terrified to cross him.” His threats only grew worse from there, she said.
She filed multiple complaints, but she said police officers suggested she didn’t seem like a victim or wasn’t able to prove that she was in danger.
Earlier this month, Boulard led the first supplementary training on domestic violence for police in the Paris suburb of Les Mureaux. She emphasized to the eight officers there that among victims, “shame is an extremely strong feeling.”
Participants traded stories of issues they had encountered: the surge in complaints on Sundays, the woman who retracts her complaint, the partner who insists everything is fine.
“We can’t do anything,” one female police officer complained.
Boulard told The AP that the three-hour session aimed to help officers understand the pressures that victims face and “why the victim is not what they imagined, why sometimes they don’t correspond with the criteria they expect to see.”
Trainings like Boulard’s take place in some parts of France, but regional authorities can decide whether to hold them. Activists hope they’ll become routine.
“A year or two ago, no one used the word ‘femicide’ apart from feminist organizations,” Haas said. “There is very much a change in public consciousness.”

MUMBAI | NEW DELHI: Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices Friday filed separate petitions in the Supreme Court, seeking a review of penalties and interest on the dues, and questioning some components of the non-core items that the court said should be included while computing adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of telcos. The telcos have sought a limited review of the October 24 ruling, and haven't challenged the entire SC order that widened the definition of AGR and left them facing Rs 1.47 lakh crore in additional licence fee, spectrum usage charge (SUC), penalties and interest. They have also not sought any extension of the three-month payment deadline. Licence fee and SUC are calculated on the basis of AGR. Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel are desperate to have penalties and interest waived off, failing which their survival could be in question. These comprise 75% of their combined Rs 89,000-crore AGR dues. "Airtel has filed for a review of interest, penalty and interest on penalty," a person familiar with the matter told ET. Besides a review of the penalty, Vodafone Idea's petition has also urged the Supreme Court to have a "relook at the amounts attributed to notional revenue", said another person.Some examples of notional revenue in case of mobile phone operators are discounts on plans and forex gains. For instance, if a telco has a plan offering 100 minutes of talk time for Rs 100, but offers a Rs 20 discount, then according to the telecom department the carrier must pay licence fee on Rs 100 — the original rate card. The operators, however, had argued that they would pay on Rs 80. 72192897 The operators are challenging the imposition of penalty on the grounds that the government never raised final demands. What was raised were provisional demands that were legally disputed by the operators. Bharti Airtel declined to comment, while Vodafone Idea and Tata Teleservices did not reply to ET's queries. Shares of Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel ended 1.2% lower at Rs 6.56 and Rs 421, respectively, on the BSE Friday. Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel are the worst hit, facing statutory dues of Rs 53,039 crore and Rs 35,586 crore, respectively, which they need to pay up in just over two months from now. Tata Teleservices, which has sold its consumer mobility business to Airtel, faces dues of Rs 13,823 crore. "The Supreme Court has examined in details each and every point of AGR… At most, it can relook at the penalty and interest charged," said Saurav Kumar, partner at law firm IndusLaw. The reviews were filed after the government made it clear that it was up to the mobile phone companies to move court to seek a review of the order to get relief, or if they want more time to pay up the dues, officials told ET. Lawyers said less than 2% of the review petitions for Supreme Court orders are successful.Vodafone Idea MD Ravinder Takkar has previously said that, if required, the telco has the option of filing "a curative petition before a five-judge Supreme Court bench, which can be different" from the one that delivered the October 24 ruling. Industry officials said if the telcos fail to get any relief from the apex court, the government may be forced to intervene to ensure Vodafone Idea and Airtel survive. The government has said it will ensure the telecom market, where Reliance Jio is the only other private operator, and the only one making profits, isn't reduced to a monopoly. Just over a week ago, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel had raised doubts over their ability to continue as going concerns if they had to pay the full AGR dues. The telcos posted combined losses of nearly Rs 74,000 crore for the July-September quarter after provisioning for AGR-related dues. Vodafone Idea — whose Rs 50,921.9-crore quarterly loss was the worst in India's corporate history — had set aside Rs 25,680 crore. Bharti Airtel — which posted the third-worst quarterly loss ever for India Inc at .`23,045 crore — provided for .`28,450 crore. The telecom department has already sent notices to mobile phone companies to self-assess dues basis the SC order and make payments. If there is any difference in the calculations made by the department and that of the telcos, the DoT will send demand notices for the balance amounts. The legal route is part of a two-pronged strategy of the telcos, the other being to push the government to provide some financial relief. The Centre had set up a panel of secretaries, headed by cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, to suggest ways to help restore the sector's health. The panel suggested a moratorium on spectrum payments, which was cleared by the Cabinet on Wednesday. The government, however, didn't reduce the 8% of AGR that telcos pay as licence fees, as was widely expected.
MUMBAI: The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) banned Karvy Stock Broking Ltd (KSBL) over client defaults worth Rs 2,000 crore with immediate effect. It's been banned from taking on new clients and executing trades for existing customers. This follows an investigation by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) which found that Karvy had allegedly sold client stocks pledged with it through associated entities. The regulator has told depositories not to act upon any instructions by Karvy Stock Broking on the basis of powers of attorney given to the brokerage house in order to prevent further misuse of client securities. "There is need for urgent regulatory intervention to prevent further misuse of clients' securities," Sebi wholetime member Ananta Barua said in his ex-parte ad interim order late Friday. Sebi said depositories should monitor movement of securities into and from depository participant accounts of Karvy Stock Broking's clients to ensure the latter's operations are not affected. The National Stock Exchange had said Karvy Stock Broking misused powers of attorney given by its clients. Karvy sold client securities in the market through entities it controls and used the funds for its own purposes. 72193705 "KSBL in order to hide its misdeed has not even reported this DP account no. 11458979, named Karvy Stock Broking Ltd (BSE) in the submissions made by it to NSE from January 2019 to August 2019," the Sebi order said."It is only during inspection by NSE this account came to notice. NSE report finds that there are numerous transactions in DP account no. 11458979, named Karvy Stock Broking Ltd (BSE), whereby securities of the clients have been moved." The securities were transferred to this account, misusing powers of attorney, Sebi said. "The securities lying in the aforesaid DP account actually belong to the clients which are the legitimate owners of the securities," the regulator said. "Therefore, KSBL did not have any legal right to create any kind of pledge on these securities. Even if the client securities were pledged, it should have only been for meeting the obligation of the respective clients which was not observed in this case." This casts suspicion on the role of Karvy, Sebi said. "Considering the issue of misuse of clients' securities by Karvy Stock Broking in unauthorised manner, for its own use and purposely not disclosing the DP account no. 11458979, named Karvy Stock Broking Ltd (BSE) to the exchanges in their reporting create a serious doubt on the conduct and integrity of Karvy Stock Broking Ltd," the regulator said. Sebi observed that prima facie a net amount of Rs 1,096 crore had been transferred by Karvy Stock Broking to its group company, Karvy Realty. Further, Karvy Stock Broking had sold excess securities to the tune of Rs 485 crore through nine related clients. It had also transferred excess securities to six out of these nine related clients to the tune of Rs 162 crore. On subsequent verification, it was observed that securities worth Rs 257.08 crore had been pledged on behalf of four out of the nine clients. Karvy also purchased securities amounting to Rs 228.07 crore between June 1to September 8 this year.
MUMBAI: Investigators into the Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank fraud have detected another borrower — the Abchal Group — that concealed its identity through password-protected accounts, much in the manner of Housing Development and Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL). These 'ghost accounts' are suspected to have been operated by entities with the knowledge of arrested bank officials, sources said. These accounts allegedly belonged to the Abchal Group, loans to which have turned bad, saddling the bank with a Rs 300 crore liability. Not much information seems to be publicly available on the Abchal Group or its promoters. According to details available with Registrar of Companies (RoC), Shri Abchal Property Investment Pvt Ltd was incorporated in 1992 with a share capital of Rs 1 lakh. The company is currently struck off by the RoC owing to which ET was unable to reach out to it for a reaction. HDIL had allegedly tampered with PMC Bank's core banking solution to operate 44 password-protected accounts. Loans disbursed by the bank to these accounts on overdraft eventually made it to the accounts held by HDIL or its promoters Rakesh and Sarang Wadhawan. 72192990 "Details have emerged in the draft forensic report and from interrogations. The accused bankers have accepted that like HDIL, Abchal Group, too, used ghost accounts. Inquiries are being made to ascertain who were the ultimate beneficiaries," said an official. "The accused directors who so far maintained that only HDIL operated password-protected accounts had been lying and hiding information," the official said. The investigators are also likely to summon the directors of the Uttam Galva Group. A draft forensic report by Grant Thronton (GT) pointed out certain instances of alleged "favours" extended by the erstwhile PMC board such as allowing Uttam Galva companies extra time to meet loan obligations, sources said. The Uttam Galva Group was PMC's second major borrower after HDIL with a loan exposure of over Rs 200 crore. "We are not aware of any forensic audit findings nor have been asked by any agency to join the probe. Our account is regular as on date," an Uttam Galva spokesperson told ET in an email. "We have been doing business with PMC Bank for the last 25 years. Uttam Galva Steels Ltd, Uttam Galva Metallics Ltd and Uttam Value Steels Ltd have credit balance in their respective current accounts of Rs 13 cro-re. Our power plant IPPL and another associate company Shree Uttam Steels and Power Ltd have long-term loans of about Rs 200 crore which are being serviced regularly." Sources told ET that the Reserve Bank of India-appointed administrator JB Bhoria also plans to implead PMC in the insolvency proceedings against HDIL initiated by Bank of India. In a meeting of the RBI governor, the Maharashtra police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) chief, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and Bhoria earlier this week, it was decided to approach the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to auction the bank's assets. Those outside the bankruptcy proceedings will be sold by the bank under the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Securities Interest (Sarfaesi) Act. EOW chief Rajvardhan Sinha confirmed that loans given to the Uttam Galva Group firms are being investigated but refused to comment further. Within days of the Mumbai bench of the NCLT admitting the bankruptcy case against HDIL in August, the builder moved the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). "It stayed the formation of a committee of creditors (CoC) because a resolution professional was appointed to take a call on the claims," said a person close to the development. "NCLAT will hear the matter again on December 4 when PMC Bank will be present as a creditor with substantial voting rights." On Friday, the ED gave its consent for the sale of two airplanes and a yacht seized by the EOW. It, however, said that consent for the sale of 17 vehicles cannot be given as their disposal will be decided by the adjudicating authority under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Counsel for PMC Bank Ramesh Dube-Patil asked that the movable assets be auctioned within a month as these were susceptible to depreciation. "Delay in disposing the moveable assets would result in the loss of value of the assets and hence it would be in the interest of the justice to allow the present application," the bank told the CMM court. The court is likely to pass its order on the auction of the two jets and the yacht on November 25.
KOLKATA|NEW DELHI: Indian telcos have scored a crucial victory on the road to 5G. The International Telecom Union (ITU) has dismissed a proposal of the Department of Telecommunications – pushed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) – to restrict transmission power of 5G mobile base stations, and has upheld the view of the telecom industry at the World Radio Communications-2019 conference in Egypt. ITU's global regulation paves the way for mobile phone companies to deploy the coveted 26 GHz millimetre wave band for ringing in affordable 5G services in India. It also paves the way for DoT to auction these premium airwaves for 5G services in the next sale, especially since the government has sufficient quantum of this coveted spectrum. Telcos in recent months had protested ISRO's suggestion to the government to forcefully cut the transmission power of a 5G base station running on the 26 GHz band. They had warned DoT that acceptance of such a proposal would exponentially raise deployment costs and kill the 5G business case on the premium 26 GHz millimetre wave band in India. "The upshot of ITU's global regulation is that there is no restriction on a 5G mobile base station operating on the 26 GHz band to transmit at the normal level of 60 dbm…this effectively rejects ISRO's suggestion to the telecom department to cut the transmission power to 37 dbm," a top industry executive, who participated in the WRC-2019 conference in Egypt, told ET. Another person familiar with the matter said, "it is an international treaty, and will require all countries, including India to comply". 72193119 A normal 5G base station transmits at 60 dbm (including the antenna gain). ISRO wanted that cut to 37 dbm as it requires a small slug of 26 GHz spectrum for satellite services and wants zero interference from 5G mobile networks in future. The radiated transmission power of base station antennae is measured in dbms. Another senior telco executive said, "the ITU regulation should now empower DoT to consider auctioning 26 GHz millimetre-wave spectrum band for 5G services in the next sale". The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) - which represents Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea - had recently written to telecom secretary Anshu Prakash that restricting the transmission power of 5G base stations (operating in the 26 GHz band) to 37 dbm (instead of the normal level of 60 dbm), on ISRO's suggestion, would "increase 5G deployment costs in India by at least 16 times, increasing the service price for the end-consumer, making 5G services unaffordable". It had also urged Prakash to direct the head of Indian delegation at WRC-2019 to support the 26 GHz band for 5G services as India has a whopping 3250 Mhz of airwaves in this premium band, as opposed to merely 175 units in the 3.5 GHz band that the government plans to auction. The DoT has earmarked spectrum in the 3.3-3.6 GHz band for 5G services but the industry wants it to also auction 26 GHz spectrum for the ultra-fast wireless broadband service. The Digital Communications Commission has yet to take a call on auction details. At press time, ET's queries to the COAI, ISRO and DoT remained unanswered. An ITU spokesperson said the agency won't be able to respond immediately. As per GSMA estimates, millimeter wave-based 5G services will account for $212 billion of GDP growth in APAC by 2034. Of this, South and South East Asia will account for $45 billion of GDP growth, with the growth largely generated by India. Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal had recently told ET that millimeter-wave spectrum is important as it offers a comparatively larger chunk of spectrum. "The global standard deployment will move towards 26 Ghz (millimeter wave) as well as 3.5Ghz. Joining RCEP would mean India accepting substantially increased imports of dairy products from New Zealand and Australia and India's dairy industry dug in its heels – and the Indian government acceded.The figures that have emerged from the 20th Livestock Census of India provide further testimony to Dr. Kurien's achievement. It isn't just the sheer numbers of cattle (192.4 million) and buffaloes (109.8 million), but their composition that shows the impact of the scientific dairying principles that the White Revolution instilled.Among the cattle, for example, the numbers of male cattle have declined by 31% which shows that India's cattle herd is increasingly focussed on efficient milk production. (Whether this has been achieved relatively humanely, by sex selective impregnation of cows, or by quietly abandoning males is unclear).It is often forgotten that Dr. Kurien's early success at Amul was achieved very largely with buffaloes rather than cows. While the global dairy industry mainly depends on cows, in India buffaloes are better suited to the climatic conditions and types of forage available in large parts of the country. Yet as Dr. Kurien details in his autobiography, I Too Had a Dream, he had to deal with persistent scepticism from dairy experts about Amul's use of buffaloes and whether it would be able to produce quality products from their milk – and he gleefully notes how he regularly proved them wrong.The value placed by Dr. Kurien on buffaloes hasn't been maintained by current dairymen, who only seem to want to showcase cow milk. But the Livestock Census shows that, despite being given much lower priority the numbers of buffaloes have grown by a steady 1.06 per cent, which is more than the 0.83 per cent growth in cattle. It seems there is a dairying logic to depending on buffaloes in India that overcomes a prejudice for cows.Despite such testimonies to what was achieved by Dr. Kurien, and the many who worked with him, it will be interesting to see how much his contribution is actually lauded on National Milk Day. Because it has been increasingly clear of late that Dr. Kurien, and the scientific dairying that he espoused is no longer in favour with important political interests.This came out, most shockingly, in an attack on him last year by Dileep Sanghani, a BJP leader and former minister from Gujarat, who alleged that Dr. Kurien had used funds from his dairy organisation to support Christian conversions in tribal areas in Gujarat. This was a bizarre charge given that Dr. Kurien was almost aggressively disinterested in religion.The real problem that Dr. Kurien, and his model of dairy economics poses, comes from the hyper sensitive issue of cow slaughter. While the roots of this issue go back to pre-Independence days, campaigning against cow slaughter as being against Indian culture was used, very successfully, by Hindu aligned groups to raise their political profile from the mid 1950s onwards. This reached a peak of sorts in the first attack ever made on India's parliament in 1966 by a rampaging mob of cow protection supporters.In the wake of this attack the government established a committee to decide on this issue, which included both proponents of a cow slaughter ban, and also firm opponents lead by Dr. Kurien. As he states in his memoir, "it was important for us in the dairy business to keep weeding out the unhealthy cows so that available resources could be utilised for healthy and productive cattle." Despite immense pressure, Dr. Kurien stood firm and after 12 years of meeting the committee was quietly disbanded.Today, in the absence of a strong voice like Dr. Kurien's, his rational arguments are being overturned, and the effect is starting to be seen. It is one reason for the larger growth in buffaloes – though this might have been expected to be larger, which in turn makes one suspect that the real impact will only show up in the next Livestock Census. It is also the obvious reason for the rapid decline in male cattle. If their value cannot be realised in sale and slaughter, and they also have to be kept alive, it is best that they aren't born at all.One of the most controversial statistics from the Livestock Census is likely to be the fact that native Indian cattle breeds have shown a decline of minus six percent, while cattle crossbred with foreign varieties have grown very rapidly by 26.9 per cent. Native Indian breeds, like the Gir, give markedly less milk than foreign varieties, like Holsteins, and one key change made by the White Revolution was encourage cattle crossbred with foreign varieties to increase milk production rapidly – and clearly this has happened.But this is proving to be a controversial achievement. There is a substantial political lobby in favour of Indian breeds, and there are rational arguments for this position. Indian breeds are better suited to local conditions (like buffaloes) and can survive without the specialised, and expensive diets required by foreign breeds. But the economics of dairying clearly focuses on the foreign breeds, especially if dairy farmers aren't being allowed to realise the value of non-milking cattle by selling them for slaughter.Essentially, India's dairy industry is now being faced by demands for (a) no cattle slaughter, (b) more cows, particularly Indian breeds and (c) maintaining the high rates of production set by the White Revolution. The first and the last is being met, at least to some extent, as the Livestock Census shows, by increasing numbers of buffaloes, or by of high-yield cross-bred cows. But meeting all three aims together seems impossible.Increased numbers of native breeds could possibly be accommodated if dairy farmers were allowed to off-set their lower yield by selling them for slaughter. One telling proof of this comes from the fact that the one part of the world where Indian origin cattle are thriving is not India, but Brazil, where Indian breeds were taken because of their suitability to tropical conditions. The Brazilian cattle are meant for beef as much, or even more, than milk, and as such the economics of raising work, in a way they can't in India with the cow slaughter ban.Proponents of native breeds in India are prone to suggesting that this value could be made up by monetising products from their dung and urine. But given clear absence of major demand for such products – and the way in which some proponents exaggerate their case, for example by suggesting Indian cow urine contains gold – this value proposition seems hard to support.A more concrete value proposition might be found in newly trendy A2 milk. This is a kind of milk that lacks a specific protein which, studies suggest, might make it healthier for consumption. The milk of many Western varieties contains this protein, but the milk of native Indian breeds – and other animals, like buffaloes and goats – lacks it. The New Zealand based A2 Milk Company popularised the concept, at least partly in the hope of breaking into the potentially lucrative Chinese market.There are now a range of premium milk services in Indian metros, and most are now focussing on A2 milk. The value of this approach is that it makes consumers appreciate milk, and the real costs of producing it in a locally sustainable way. The problem is that by making milk a premium product it increasingly becomes unaffordable by those who really need it – the millions of poor Indians who desperately need the protein it provides, and who were the beneficiaries from the White Revolution.There might be a solution to this whole milk mess, but one that comes from an entirely new side. The plant based milk industry is growing rapidly driven by the increasing consumer power of the vegan movement.There are increasing takers for their arguments that animal milk is inherently cruel since it always involves depriving young animals of their natural source of nutrition. In actual practice too, they argue, there are numerous cruelties involved in commercial dairying that make milk a deeply unethical product.The plant based milks produced by this movement were initially derived from nuts, which are so expensive as to make them impossible to develop as mass market products.A new range of plant based milks are based on grains like oats and rice, which are more affordable, though the processing costs are still high. But the real breakthrough might come from companies like San Francisco based Perfect Day, led by two young Indian origin entrepreneurs, Ryan Pandya and Perumal Gandhi.Other plant based milks have all involved creating mixing base ingredients with water at high speed to create milk-like emulsions of fats and suspensions of solids, and adding ingredients that prevent these separating over time. Perfect Day takes a fundamentally different approach, by using micro-organisms like yeast to create actual dairy proteins with the help of cow milk DNA. These can then be combined with water and other non-dairy ingredients to create a product that is as close to lab grown dairy as we are likely to get.As it happens, proponents of plant based milks like this have also created a day to celebrate their products. Objecting to the FAO's World Milk Day, they started a World Plant Milk Day in 2017, which they celebrated on August 22nd. Perhaps in time we might need to have a National Plant Milk Day in India to celebrate the only products that can resolve all the problems that the government is creating by moving away from the clarity of Dr. Kurien's approach to milk.
MUMBAI: The IL&FS crisis has changed the Indian debt market. It is still going through the aftershocks of the collapse of the non-banking financial giant, but it also means that there is an opportunity for investors, say experts. In the post IL&FS crisis environment when everybody is cautious could be the best time to invest in credit risk funds, said Nimesh Shah, MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, in a panel discussion at ETMarkets Global Summit. "The debt industry is now fully prepared to take whatever crisis comes. Last one year has separated men from boys. Our belief is credit space is the best place to be in," Shah added. Shah also asserted that credit spreads have never been better. "NBFC whose risks are well-spread are good options." Shah along with Kalpen Parekh, President of DSP Mutual Fund blamed investors for not doing due diligence before investing in the papers of those companies that went bust. "Whenever somebody is aggressively lending, they create problems five years down the line. When entire infrastructure was under pressure, IL&FS stood out. Did anyone question that? If you would have done your due diligence you would not have taken the losses," Shah said. Parekh was of the opinion that irrespective of ratings, most companies have been going through their own crisis. "NBFC grew at a rapid pace after the banks stopped lending money. We like to chase returns until risk plays out. But it changes when risk plays out." Parekh wondered why no panel discussion happened when the NBFC industry was still growing. Sandeep Thapliyal, MD & CEO of Avendus Finance said that NBFCs compromised on classic asset liability principle and paid the price. Coming to the defence of mutual fund industry, Shah said some schemes of some MFs had a problem and not everyone was affected. He blamed the crunch in the real estate industry as the root of all problems. "Since the industry could not pay NBFCs, they could not pay MFs." Alka Anbarasu, Vice President - Senior Credit Officer at Moody's Investors Service sees a glimmer of hope. "Earlier, NBFCs were not willing to maintain enough liquidity. Now, they are changing. They are trying to diversify their sources of funding so they are not dependent on just one," she said. Anbarasu considers NBFC crisis as one of the key reasons behind recent outlook downgrade by Moody's. On good stocks in the NBFC space, Thaplial said that companies such as Bajaj Finance, which have a solid parental backing, gained from the misadventure. "There is a flight to quality as governance is coming at a premium, which is good. There are NBFCs not linked to real estate, but are still facing issues, but overall, good NBFCs are getting money," he added. On the outlook for the sector, Shah said the pain was not over for the real estate sector as more NPAs could surface. "Only good thing is that this time the industry is prepared," he said.
When almost everyone wants to buy certain stocks in the markets, it is obvious that the rest of the spaces tend to become more value and if you are seeking value, then you become a contra investor. says Prashant Jain, ED & CIO, HDFC AMC. Excerpts from an interview with Nikunj Dalmia of ETNOW.It is often said in the market that investing is very easy, it is common sense and a little bit of patience. So if investing is so simple. how come you do not have too many billionaires on the street? How come there is only one Prashant Jain?I think I am not the only one, there are quite a few who have done very well in the markets, may not be in a mutual fund format for 25 years but there are quite a few of them. But yes, equities are a very simple asset class but as it is said, what is simple is not always easy. I think to do well in equities we need right understanding which can be very easy for some and can be very challenging for others. Apart from right understanding we need lots of patience, tolerance for volatility and the discipline to a) remain diversified and b), not to deviate or compromise from what you believe is good for the long term. You started your career as a fund manager. A lot of fund managers start as analysts, migrate to the sell side, then the buy side and then become a fund manager. When did the realisation kick in for you that you wanted to be a fund manager because that meant you need to understand cycles, valuations, macro environment, interest rate environment?You may find it hard to believe but the fact is I had actually qualified for the civil services. I went home to discuss with my parents and it took us 10 days to decide that I would actually not join civil services. Government job versus private job?I had an offer from SBICAP those days. There was a Day 1 company and I was at that time in Bangalore. I joined 10 days late, behind all my other batch mates. They had 14 people that year from IIMs and I was the last one to join. When I joined, Mr Sriram was the GM and he said very apologetically son, I am extremely sorry, all the good postings are gone. All you can do now is equity research. Seriously! So those days, project appraisal, merchant banking, marketing was preferred over equity research and fund management. That is how within a short period of two years, I was made a fund manager. What would you choose for your son -- civil services or a fund manager's job? Which is a more stable career for the next 20 years? I would say civil services and I will explain why. You are being politically right?No, no, no. I mean, data is king. It is a misnomer in the country that the private sector pays more. Nothing could be farther from the truth. You look at the average salary. This entire country believes otherwise, but what has happened is the media highlights only the most successful people in the private sector who of course can draw any amount of salaries, there is an impression that the private sector pays more. It is not true at all. The starting salary of an engineer in a public sector is about four times that of the starting salary of IIT engineers. I am saying average salary meaning the total employee cost divided by the total headcount of a public sector company is 60-70% more than that of a leading IT company. As a result of the very large addition to the white collar workforce from a large number of engineering, MBA colleges. the white collar salaries in India in private sector have actually degrown in real terms. And of course, the final thing is in equities, the survival rate is very low. I have been in this industry for 30 years and to retain good jobs in financial services, particularly beyond 40, is increasingly getting challenging because your cost keeps on going up and in financial services, the only cost is wages. So, if you are not up to it or if the downturn comes, it is the middle to senior level people, who are often the casualties. I will take the clock back. When you started your career, obviously that was a different India. Our GDP was nowhere close to even a trillion dollars - it must have been $100 billion or $250 billion. Today, at $3 billion, we one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Did you imagine when you started your investing career that we could have a TCS which has a profit of Rs 35,000 crore or Reliance which has a projected profit of Rs 40.000 crore? To give you a very correct answer, no I never thought that long. I have tried to do the best every single day, I have tried to think ahead in terms of investing but clearly I do not think I ever thought that we would become this large, we would have this big companies. But one thing I must say is that I had a firm belief and a desire to remain in India and to work in India. I understood this much that given the demographics the natural resources and the capabilities of people in this country, it will continue to grow but clearly I did not extrapolate that this will become such a large economy. For those who are worried about slowdown, global growth, drop in autos, do you think the strength of India will prove them wrong once again?For sure, the growth will bounce back in India but it could take a little time. Going back to the same issue that I raised earlier, the white collar wages in India have degrown in real terms and new avenues of consumption have arrived in India. The mobile handset market is as large as the car market and if you do not have enough money, you would clearly buy a mobile phone over a car. This is what is leading to a drop in consumer discretionary consumption in India. But cutting the corporate tax rates by the government should help. Given the backdrop of the US-China trade war and the fact that Chinese wages are now higher than Indian wages, the wages in the manufacturing sector and their manufactured exports are almost seven-eight times of India. A serious attempt is being made and should be made to encourage global companies to set up shop in India. Yesterday, I read that government has identified 323 global companies to whom they will say, we have lowered tax rates, we have a huge local market this is the piece of land, water, power, what do you want? Please come here. I think that is what will revive wage growth and economic growth in India. Given the March 23 deadline for a concessional tax rate for new manufacturing units of 15%, sooner rather than later, we should see good movement on that front. Post the tax cut, we have not seen a large indication or announcement from any of the large corporate houses that they are ready to commit capital. Is that the challenge right now that corporate houses are either scared or they do not have the ability or the will or the scale to commit capital? You need to divide potential capex by private sector in three areas; some businesses are fundamentally less capital intensive; let us say a FMCG or services businesses and no matter what taxes you cut, they will not spend more because they are in that type of business which needs capital expenditure. The second are the capital intensive businesses and these are businesses like power, infrastructure or metals. Now unfortunately, these three sectors which drove the capex cycle in India last time around, many companies have very difficult balance sheets, many of them are under the bankruptcy proceedings and the ones that are healthy would rather buy the existing assets under IBC which are cheaper. All the power plants that are being sold or will be sold, they are nearly half of the replacement cost. As long as existing assets are available to be cheaper, I do not think new capex will revive in the capital intensive sectors. The IBC process and most of the existing assets will find new buyers or new homes by March of this year. Post that, we should see private capex revive in these areas and that is why I said earlier that the real opportunity for India in the near term is to get those 300 or so global companies into India because we buy a Samsung television, we buy a mobile phone. If an Indian company puts up a TV factor or a mobile factory, we will not buy those products. Our consumption basket is tilted more towards imports. We need to bring in those companies and they can make for India and for the world in India. You are a firm believer of cycles. It is not that you have not bought consumer stocks in the past. In 2008-2009, one of your largest holding was Titan followed by Page. Now, you do not have consumer stocks in your portfolio. Why is that?I do not subscribe to this view that good businesses/good investment at any price and that is not borne out by my experience over the last three decades. Certainly we should buy a sustainable business but beyond that for a good business to become a good investment, the price must be good also. I can give you several examples. If you bought IT stocks in late 90s to early 2000s, for 10-15 years, you hardly made any money because they were so expensive and future growth was discounted by 2000. If you bought FMCG companies in 1995, for the next 10 years, there was zero returns because they were so expensive in 1995. They were growing businesses. They were great businesses in 1995 and 2005 as well. Consumer stocks in India today are trading at life time high multiples. Never before in my experience have they traded so expensive and nowhere in the world do they trade at even probably half the valuations. While these are good and sustainable businesses, the expectations from these are unlikely to be met. Let us not forget that many of these are reasonably mature businesses. India sells two crore two-wheelers a year and may be in India there are 15 to 20 crore two-wheelers on the roads. Almost two out of three families own a two-wheeler. Soaps, shampoos, toothpaste are good businesses again but to expect them to grow very fast is not correct because they are reasonably mature businesses. I want to pay good attention to what price I am buying, apart from the sustainability of a business and these businesses do not pass the valuation test. But if one looks at the India story, perhaps with the exception of Reliance, it is centred around consumers, autos and private banks. You do not have a very large manufacturing company, you do not have anything very large which has become export front company in terms of manufacturing. Why is that?That is true then because it is hard to explain and probably unfortunate in the 90s. Till the 1990s, India's per capita income was the same or higher than China. Is it true?Yes and today Chinese per capita income is five times of us. While we made a success in the services industry, in manufacturing, China went decades ahead of us. So if you look at the composition of the Sensex today, there are very few manufacturing companies in that -- 30% is financial services, 20% like IT, pharmaceuticals and oil and gas and metals are global cyclicals. That is 50% of the market; another 20% would be consumer discretionary, non-discretionary. That is 70% and only 10% is companies like Larsen & Toubro. So that shows up in our GDP composition. What is the contribution of manufacturing to GDP? But I think all is not lost. For the first time in my career, in the last one-two years Indian companies in chemicals, textiles, auto ancillaries tell us that the wages or the cost of manufacturing in India is lower than China. That was not the case 15 years back. The compliance with environment standards is improving in China. The subsidies are reducing. So India is now comparative in rupees terms and that is why this tax cut has come at a very opportune time. Our manufactured exports at $300 billion are roughly the same size as of Vietnam, Thailand or Indonesia and they are countries which are one-tenth the size of India. In case of China, it is $2.5 trillion. Given the right tax rates, given the right environment and the advantage of a massive local market which none of these neighbouring countries have, it is reasonable to expect that many of these global multi-nationals who are present in China, when they move out of China or reduce their footprint there, will get a higher share in future than what we have got so far. You have mentioned the weightage of Nifty. The weightage of the Nifty in 2000 was very different. It was dominated by TMT. Ten years from now, what to your mind could be the face of the Nifty because we understand that is where wealth is going to get created?It was very different in the 90s. By 2000, it was very different and today it is very different. It probably reflects the economic growth and which sectors get undervalued or overvalued like tech. I vaguely remember in late 90s or early 2000, tech was almost half of the market weights. But it was reflecting as much the growth of the sector as the overvaluation because these are market cap driven indices. I think I think investment growth, investments should outgrow consumption in India. Unless you do that, it will be very tough for this economy to grow. Household debt in India has gone up very sharply. It used to be 2% in 2000. Today it is 20%. Our savings rate has dipped in last 10 years. In 2010 or 2008, our financial savings rate used to be 12%, today it is down to 8%. Never before in India has our financial savings rate fallen. I think that is because the white collar wages have de-grown. I think the only way to fix this is to grow your investments. If investments grow, you create more jobs. It gives you more salaries and then you can come back and spend. And again, most countries have experienced rapid economic growth in the past. It has been driven by exports -- whether it was Japan, Korea or Germany. It is China now. When these global companies come to India, hopefully it will increase our merchandise manufactured exports as well. Future businesses that will grow faster will be around capital spending, manufacturing and of course financial services will keep pace with the GDP growth. The recent downturn, HUL has managed to grow, Bajaj Finance has managed to grow and big companies are the only ones which are growing. Are we in an environment where the existing 50, 70, 100 companies will become giant companies, giant will become mega and mega will become monster?I do not think there can be any generalisation to that trend. For example, many NBFCs pioneered a new area for credit but over time, as it became large, banks centred and then they gained share back from the NBFCs. For the first time in this season, I some leading banks offered you loans for very small consumer items and today in India you can get an EMI on a debt card as well. So over time, banks will be able to address the small consumer loans from the market because it will all be digitally delivered and they know their customers extremely well. It will be driven by analytics. While those companies which continue to be ahead of the competition will do well, there is always place for companies which execute better. But banks will be formidable competition in the days to come, even small retail loans. As far as Lever is concerned, it is a great company. It has outstanding brands, extremely well managed, global based practices, it continues to grow, it continues to premiumise but Lever continues to grow at broadly the same rates at what it has grown for a long period. I think Levers' business is reasonably easy to forecast. Where people have different views is what they are willing to pay for that quality and for that growth. You have taken contra bets not yesterday, not last year, but in your entire investing career. You have bought for example, corporate banks when everybody was focussing on retail banks. You bought into PSUs when PSUs were not the popular trades in the market; you bought consumer names when there was a bias towards infrastructure. How do you come up with a thesis and idea and conclude that it is time to go contra? I am extremely non-violent by nature. I do not believe in contra investing but I do believe in value investing. And if value investing at a point of time means that you think differently from others then so be it. As I said earlier, I have always tried to buy reasonably quality businesses, not always high quality because sometimes they are very expensive and I have always focussed on what you pay for them. It is quite logical that when a good business is passing through a challenging time or when some other businesses are doing extremely well on the stock markets and since most people in life and in stock markets as well, are very short term focussed, they want to avoid short term pain and get short term gains. When almost everyone wants to buy certain stocks in the markets, it is obvious that the rest of the spaces tend to become more value and if you are seeking value, then you become a contra investor. So contra is an outcome of seeking value but seeking value is the key. I will give you two, three examples here; around 1999-2000, the IT stocks were trading at 300-400 multiples and even I agreed that they will continue to grow for many years, which indeed they did. But it is just that that more of that growth was discounted than the real growth. And so they were great businesses, growing businesses but bad investments and since everyone was buying IT and nothing but IT, almost everything else became so cheap that it is hard to explain. You could have bought BPCL in 2000 for just the value of the LPG cylinders. You could have bought Ashok Leyland for less than the working capital on the balance sheet. That was one great example and these businesses which grew slower but delivered far higher returns because if you buy something at 2 or 2 PE and if it goes to 15 PE it is a five or six bagger. Around 2008, just the opposite happened; this was one time when quality was at a discount. So, around 2008, you could buy the consumer companies, pharma companies, automobile companies in single digit or low double digit multiples. We used to own Glaxo Consumer. They make Horlicks at 12 PE, I bought it at 18 and I saw it fall to 12 PE. People used to tell me look Horlicks is had by only sick or old people, there is no future to this business because at that time, everyone wanted to buy only infrastructure, power and real estate companies as they were doing well. So I think I have seen this time and again that the definition of quality changes and what is going up tends to get overvalued.But I must say that sometimes in the last few years, like you have mentioned we have been overweight on corporate banks. It can test your patience because when a business is in pain, it is cheap and you are buying it in the hope that that pain will go away one day and that the business is strong enough to survive that period of pain. The Essar Steel case it took almost three years to resolve and we were hoping given the IBC deadlines that that resolution will take place much earlier. And that is why value investing becomes difficult at times because something in the environment changes and the pain period gets extended but the key is to buy a strong business so that it is able to endure that period of pain and you should of course, be able to endure that pain because in the end if your assessment of value is right, no matter how long it takes, the value does unfold and the investment gives you the returns for the entire holding period. Great example on Ashok Leyland, great example on Glaxo but what do you find cheap now?I will give you an answer. Track our portfolio. A person likes it most is the overweights and underweights. Let me answer that more specifically. This is my opinion and many people disagree with me. The public sector companies to my mind are misunderstood by the markets. There are sectors in which public sector is at a disadvantage like the service industry and there are sectors where public sector has a significant advantage which are resource rich areas like mining, where you have mines which have been given to you 20-30-50-100 years back and where you have huge economies of scale or companies or sectors which are very capital intensive. Let us say oil or power or where faith is involved, let us say public banks. So when a PMC happens, you will never find a situation like this in a public bank. The ability to collect large amounts of money at low interest rates is a very strong comparative advantage for some of these banks. I find because of the frequent divestment by the governments and particularly through ETFs in the last few years, this persistent supply has made these companies very cheap. Many of these companies, especially in the mining, oil and gas, some of the strong banks, power sector are very sustainable businesses and they are also very cheap. You can figure that out by just looking at price to book or the dividend yields on these companies. Most people do not like it because if you have bought these companies in the last two, three, five years, you have not done well at all. They have caused immense pain but I think they are sustainable businesses. They are trading below their intrinsic values and what gives me hope is the shift in government strategy towards strategic divestment. So if in future if that becomes the main route for divesting these companies, it will tell us the real value of these companies -- what a strategic investor is willing to pay. Hopefully. it will also reduce the frequent supply of these stocks in the market. One question on the way the markets have moved. Is buy and hold dead or would buy and hold be never dead?Clearly investing delivers far more returns than trading and I do not think there is any denying that fact. Someone has to be exceptionally talented as a trader to make money and unless you have it in you, investing is a far more secure and predictable way of making money, long-term investing, that means buy and hold. It also means that there are two underlying assumptions. There are two things you need to be careful about. One is you must buy sustainable businesses. You must not over pay, if you bought tech in 1999 and you held it for 10 years, it was not a good decision. The day you realised that mistake in 2001, you should have corrected. If you held pharma four years back when it was very expensive and you can see what pain is there. First, you must buy right and buy right means a reasonable quality business and not an expensive one. You can hold it as long as you think it offers you reasonable value, as long as your exposure to that stock does not go up beyond what your risk management would indicate or as long as you do not have something materially better. Our portfolio turnover rates are clearly much below averages but they vary sometimes between two to five years. Let us divide broadly India into three parts. First, where you have evergreen good growth, financial sectors, private banks, insurance where growth is very strong. Second part, where because of distress valuations, stocks have gone up and down like PSU banks, corporate banks; a third business where you can catch them early which can become big over time, We know that you like PSU banks in bracket two. What do you like in bracket one which is compounders and in bracket three where businesses are young and can become big?A better way to describe my view on banks would be that I like corporate banks -- both public and private. They are equally large with us and simply because they were in pain, their liability franchise was very strong and the asset side was in pain and you thought that it will become correct and some of these banks have actually done quite well now. Identifying the third is always a challenge. IT was a fairly obvious choice in late 90s and infra growth was there but it was on sustainable and today I am not able to find any piece in the economy which will grow extremely rapidly. But I do feel that capex and manufacturing will grow faster than consumption. But there are sectors like airlines, there are sectors like organised retail which could grow fast. But fast growth alone is not enough for the markets. The moment you say this business is growing at 30% for the next 10 years, you must ask are you the only one who knows that or does the whole market know that? Chances are everyone in the market knows that and even quality companies are growing in a sustained way. So the next question you have to ask is whether your growth estimate is higher than others or if you think growth will sustain longer than what other think or what markets are discounting. Growth investing is very tempting but most often it pays less than value investing and because people simply extrapolate the high growth rates of the last few years for very,very long periods into the future. I will give you a good example. In 2000, there were many reports by consulting firms which were saying that this IT industry will become large -- $100 billion or more in the next five or eight years. It is only recently that that industry crossed $100 billion. So, we were 10 years late. Now the challenge with that was that if that growth rate slowed down, you simply lost a lot of money. That is why it is not as simple as just buying a business which will continue to grow. Markets made the same mistake in pharmaceuticals. If you look at last three-four years, the stocks are down 70%, 60%. That is because the growth rate prior to 2014 or 2015 in pharma was extrapolated indefinitely virtually and that is how they were good companies but turned out to be not so good investments.
The India Game Developer Conference's (IGDC) eleventh edition took off in Hyderabad on Friday with participation from the gamer community across several countries, developers and global companies.Held as part of Indiajoy 2019, the premier gaming, media and entertainment event is being hosted in partnership with Green Gold Animation. IGDC hopes to redefine the way gaming is perceived in the region and nurture a community without barriers.The two-day conference offers attendees several talks, workshops, panel discussions and esports tournaments. Nearly 30 top gaming companies from across the globe are participating.IGDC Chairman Rajesh Rao said, "Over 25-30 top gaming companies, who have changed the face of the industry, have made this event one-of-a-kind." On the initiatives of the Telangana government to cater to the interests of the gaming industry, IT secretary Jayesh Ranjan said, "The (IGDC) edition has grown bigger from time to time and the Telangana government has been making concentrated efforts to promote the gaming sector consistently."The Image Tower, which the Telangana government is looking to construct by end of 2020, would to redefine the gaming industry in the country, where the state government plans to provide robust infrastructure with a business-friendly environment to encourage investments, said Ranjan.The Telangana government was in talks with a few top universities in the UK that were looking to setup their off-campus sites in Hyderabad, which would widen the horizons of the industry and gaming enthusiasts, said Ranjan. KOLKATA: Microsoft, Amazon and Goldman Sachs are among those setting the pace at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) with students getting a record number of job offers, bucking the slowdown in the employment market. That's even before final placements kick off at most of the older IITs on December 1. Pre-placement offers at IITs — both old and new — including those at Mumbai, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Gandhinagar for the class of 2020, have beaten last year's corresponding numbers by 19-24%, according to institute placement cells. In the case of Hyderabad, they've almost doubled. At some of these IITs, even more preplacement offers (PPOs) are expected in the coming week in the run-up to final placements. At IIT-Bombay, as of early November, the number of PPOs spiked 24% to 163 from the year earlier. They had risen to 37 from 19 in 2018-19 at IIT-Hyderabad, as of November 19. IIT-Guwahati has seen a 19% rise in PPOs to 119 so far. At IIT-Gandhinagar, they-'re up 20% and IIT-Kharagpur has crossed last year's tally of 261, with more lined up. The premier engineering colleges have remained largely insulated from the slowdown. "It's all about quality," said SV Nathan, chief talent officer at Deloitte, a regular recruiter at the institutes. "IITs are among the institutions which have the highest standards of students coming in through the doors. That's why recruiters will continue to throng IITs for talent, irrespective of any slowdown."72192924 The highest number of PPOs have come from IT software and hardware companies, followed by those from the analytics and consulting sectors, said the IITs. All the IITs said hiring has increased over last year. Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Samsung R&D, Adobe, Qualcomm and Rubrik are among the companies that have issued the maximum PPOs, said the people cited earlier. "We are confident of garnering good numbers and good job profiles despite the so-called slowdown," said an IIT-Bombay spokesperson. Acceptance of PPOs, which are based on performances during six-eight week internships, means jobs in hand even before final placements. Vidya Lakshmi, head of human capital management at Goldman Sachs in Bengaluru, said it had given 64 PPOs across 10 IITs for students in the graduating class of 2020. The firm visited IITs in Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Varanasi, Chennai, Dhanbad and Hyderabad. "In 2019, 96 students from these IITs summer interned with us, with approximately 70% receiving preplacement offers to return," she said. "Recruitment through visiting the IITs will continue to be a focus for Goldman Sachs." Pradeep Kumar Yemula, faculty in charge of placements at IIT-Hyderabad, said the big jump in PPOs boded well for overall placements. "We are also expecting more placement offers than last year," said Yemula. DE Shaw and Microsoft have been the top paymasters at IIT-Hyderabad, he said. An IIT-Gandhinagar placement cell member told ET that the number of undergraduate students who have been placed has seen an increase of more than 60% compared with the same time last year. The institute, being a new IIT, has already started final placements. Several companies have made their debuts across campuses in a bid to recruit the best engineering talent through the PPO route. Novartis and Sprinklr are new company additions at IIT-Bombay; Rubrik gave PPOs for the first time at IIT-Guwahati; IIT-Gandhinagar had Tonichi Insatsu Co and Diverta Inc from Japan, apart from Nutanix Technologies and Infostretch. IIT-Kharagpur had Tata Consultancy Services, AB InBev, NTT-AT (Japan) and Philips gave PPOs for the first time at IIT-Hyderabad, according to placement cells. At IIT-Roorkee, which has 140 PPOs so far, Adobe and Microsoft have given the maximum number of offers. Cisco, Cohesity, Cure.fit, Rubrik, Societe Generale, Trident, Western Digital and ZestMoney are among those that made PPOs for the first time this year.
Of all the holidays, Thanksgiving has the best food. Friendsgiving is a Thanksgiving feast with your friends. And best of all, you and your friends can have whatever foods you want. Find the perfect space to host your Friendsgiving and invite your friends. Ask each of them to choose a dish they want to bring. Make sure no two people bring the same dish. On the day of the event, set the table and provide appetizers for your friends. Introduce your friends to each other and enjoy the camaraderie that follows a successful Friendsgiving.
Decide when to hold the Friendsgiving. Most Friendsgiving are within a week of Thanksgiving, either the weekend before or the weekend after. Each scheduling decision has its own pros and cons. Weigh the decision carefully, and get your friends' input during the planning stage to find out if most of your friends have a scheduling preference for the Friendsgiving.[1]
If you schedule your Friendsgiving before Thanksgiving, you could use the event to test new recipes and get feedback on some dishes that you want to bring to your family gathering on Thanksgiving. Plus, your friends will probably still be around.
If you hold your Friendsgiving the weekend following Thanksgiving, on the other hand, your friends might still be out of town with their own families. Plus, they could be burned out on eating turkey (if you choose to incorporate it).
On the plus side of hosting a Friendsgiving after Thanksgiving, though, you can get turkey and lots of other Thanksgiving foods on sale.
If you plan to host a Friendsgiving instead of (or in addition to) attending your family's own Thanksgiving, you and your friends could schedule the Friendsgiving on Thanksgiving day.
Choose a location. You'll probably have the Friendsgiving at your house, but you need to locate the best place to host the event and find ways to maximize your space. For instance, if you have an outdoor patio with a table that seats eight, but your dining room table only seats four, you'll probably want to have the Friendsgiving outside on the patio.[2]
Think about what the weather is usually like in your area in late November. If you're at a high likelihood of rain or nasty weather, you'll have no choice but to host your Friendsgiving inside.
If you want to host the Friendsgiving indoors but don't have enough space, you might be able to rent furniture from furniture rental companies for the event. Even a few card tables and folding chairs can provide you with the extra seating you need.[3]
Alternately, you could hose the Friendsgiving at your significant other's house (with their permission), or at the home of a close friend who has more space.
Invite your friends. Without your friends, you can't have a Friendsgiving. There are several ways to ask your friends to attend your Friendsgiving. For instance, you could:[4]
Send your friends an email or text message. Write, "Hi, I'm having a Friendsgiving on [insert date]. Would you like to come? If so, can you bring a dish to share with everyone else? Write me back soon with your decision and any questions. : )"
Talk to your friend directly or call your friend on the phone. Ask your friend, "Would you like to come to my Friendsgiving celebration? I'm inviting several friends and everyone will bring a dish to share. Are you free on [insert date]?"
Don't invite too many people. Think about how much space you have at your home. If your dining table only seats six, invite six people. If you can make room for extra seats or a foldout table, go for it, but stay conscious of how many friends can eat comfortably at your home.
Talk about what each friend will bring. At Friendsgiving, each friend should bring a dish to share. But you want to ensure that your friends don't all bring the same dish (ten pumpkin pies, for instance, might be a bit much). Coordinate with your friends to identify a dish that they can provide.[5][6]
If your friends are really passionate about cooking a particular dish or type of food, encourage them to bring their specialty.
For instance, if your friend has a top-notch mac & cheese recipe, encourage them to make and bring that.
Suggest to your friends that they can also buy ready-made foods, and do not have to cook anything from scratch.[7]
Let your friends know how many people are coming so they can provide enough to feed the whole group.
If your friend is bringing their significant other, ask them to bring two dishes.
Think about friends with special diets. For instance, if some of your friends are vegan, ask them and a few other friends to make (or buy) vegan dishes. Friends with special diets should be able to have a proper meal, not just a single item.
Ask your friends to have their dishes ready to eat when they arrive at the party. Otherwise, you could end up with a roomful of friends all vying to use the oven.
The only exception to the free choice of dish each friend can bring is the turkey. If you decide to include turkey in your Friendsgiving, you – the host – should cook it and the gravy, because nobody wants to transport a big, cooked bird and a pot of gravy to another house.[8]
Don't feel trapped by Thanksgiving traditions. Thanksgiving is associated with several specific foods like turkey, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes. But Friendsgiving isn't Thanksgiving. You can break the rules, or make new ones. For instance, instead of turkey, you could have sushi. Instead of pumpkin pie, get a cake. You could even choose a themed cuisine (like Chinese or Mexican) and have all the Friendsgiving food conform to the theme.[9][10]
Finalize the plans. When you've figured out when the Friendsgiving will be, who's coming, and what everyone is bringing, send your friends a mass email with all the information. You could also use an app like Google Calendar to coordinate and finalize all these details. This will give your guests the opportunity to clarify and confirm what or who they're bringing.[11][12]
Tally your plates and flatware. Before inviting a bunch of guests to your house for Friendsgiving, ensure they'll all be able to get a plate. Count your knives, spoons, plates, bowls, and forks. You should have at least one for every person who is attending, plus one of each for you.[13][14]
If you don't have enough flatware and plates, purchase some sturdy disposable plates and plasticware for the event.
You could also ask a friend to bring a few extra plates and flatware sets for the Friendsgiving.
Have snacks and appetizers available. Hors d'oeuvres and appetizers provide an opportunity for friends who don't know each other well to mingle and chat. They also provide a little something to stave off hunger if some of your guests are running late and you don't want to start the Friendsgiving dinner without them, or if some of your dishes aren't quite ready on time.[15]
Pre-made snacks and appetizer platters are readily available at most grocery stores. You might consider getting a meat, cheese, and crackers platter, or a fruit salad.
Veggie trays with carrots, celery, and pepper sticks and ranch (or another veggie dip) is the perfect appetizer for healthy friends.
Have a variety of appetizers ready to appease the various tastes of your friends.
Since snacks should be ready to eat as soon as guests arrive, it's best to provide the snacks and appetizers yourself unless you have a very trustworthy and reliable friend who you are sure can arrive before anyone else. If you arrange for your trustworthy friend to bring the appetizers and hors d'oeuvres, let them know that you're counting on them.
Set the table. There are many ways to set the table. You could cover the table with an elegant and decorate tablecloth, or you could just leave the bare wood of the table showing. You could place candles or flowers in the center of the table to set the mood, but if you're cramped for space, you could just reserve your table space for the dishes you and your friends will enjoy.[16][17]
You could set placemats in front of each seat.
You could also wrap silverware in a napkin and place it in front of each seat for a more formal dining experience.
Experiment with different styles before the Friendsgiving and find one that works for you. Use your knowledge about your friends and their preferences to find something that will make the event enjoyable and memorable for them, too.
If your cuisine has a theme, your table-setting should conform to that theme, too. For instance, if your Friendsgiving theme is Japanese food, you might place a small bust of a geisha or a folding fan in the middle of the table.
Let your guests seat themselves. Friendsgiving should be a low-key affair. There's no need to seat your friends in a formal seating arrangement or use a seating chart to decide who sits where. When your friends come in, say, "Make yourself comfortable and sit wherever you'd like. We'll eat soon."[18]
If some of your friends don't know your other friends, introduce them and share something about each with the other that would be of interest to them.
For instance, if your friends Joe and Susan don't know one another, say to Joe, "This is Susan. She is an astronaut." Then turn to Susan and say, "This is Joe. He writes about astronauts."
Provide alcohol. As the host, you'll be responsible for ensuring your guests all have enough to drink. You probably already know your friends' drinking habits, but if you don't you could just ask them at some point before the Friendsgiving what they like to drink. If your friends don't drink much (or at all), then you don't need to have much. But if your friends like drinking during dinner parties and get-togethers, provide an appropriate amount and variety of booze.[19]
If you find the cost excessive, you could also ask each of your guests to bring a bottle of wine or a six-pack of beer along with their dish.[20]
In addition to alcohol, of course, your Friendsgiving should have soda, water, and juice available for people who don't want to drink.
Don't forget to stock up on ice for both alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.
Dig in. All the dishes should be placed on the table and passed around, or arranged on the kitchen counter for buffet-style self-service. If your food is arranged on the counter, fold a notecard in half along its vertical axis, then turn it sideways to create a small sign. Write the name of the dish and the name of the person who made it on each card.[21]
Schedule some activities. After dinner, invite your friends to join in card games like 21, poker, or hearts. You and your guests might also enjoy a rousing round of Trivial Pursuit or charades. Think about what sorts of activities you and your friends enjoy and provide the opportunities to do them at your house.[22]
To keep the Friendsgiving in the spirit of Thanksgiving, you could provide everyone with a small piece of note paper and a pen and invite them to anonymously write something they're thankful on the notepad and drop it in a jar. During or after the meal, pull out the pieces of paper and read what each person is thankful for.[23]
You could also take an informal vote among your friends for the best dish of the night. Don't vote for yourself![24]
Send leftovers home with your guests. If you have anything left over at the end of the night, invite each of your guests to take some leftovers with them in resealable containers or plastic bags. This will ensure they have a little something for the road.[25]
You might also be able to obtain some disposable takeout containers from certain restaurants. Just approach the restaurant managers and ask if you could have a set of eight or 10 takeout containers and lids for your Friendsgiving.
Have a good time. If you're having fun, your guests will, too. Even if some small inconvenience occurs – a friend spills their wine on the table, or drops gravy on the carpet – just stay cool and don't let it get to you. Instead, focus on the big picture – you and your friends are enjoying a great meal, great conversation, and having great fun together.[26][27][28]
Static cling is the result of electrical charges that build up in your clothes due to dryness and friction. There are a few tricks that will get rid of static cling quickly, but you may need to change the way you wash and dry your clothes if static cling becomes a big problem in your wardrobe. To remove cling quickly, rub your clothes with a metal object to remove the electrical charge. You can also rub lotion into your skin or spray your clothes with hairspray. For long term solutions, change the way you do your laundry. Add vinegar or baking soda to your wash cycle, and consider air drying your clothes to avoid static altogether.
Slide the affected clothes through a metal hanger. After you've washed and dried your clothes, grab a metal or wire clothing hanger. Before you put your clothes on, gently glide the metal hanger over your clothes. The metal discharges the electricity and removes the static. When you go to hang your clothing, hang clothing that is sticking and clinging with a metal hanger.[1]
You can also pass a metal hanger in between your skin and your clothes after putting the clothes on.
This works particularly well with delicate fabrics, like silk. However, metal wire hangers can distort some clothing items, like heavy sweaters. If you think that your clothing may be damaged by a wire hanger, simply run the hanger over the surface of the fabric before storing your item some other way.
Hide a safety pin inside of your clothes to absorb static. Take a metal safety pin and turn your clothing inside out. Unlock the pin and slide it through the seam of your clothing so that it's hidden from the outside. Turn your clothing out to face the right direction and put your clothing on. The safety pin will absorb any static electricity.[2]
It doesn't matter if you're removing your clothes from the dryer, closet, or dresser. The pin will still work to remove static cling.
Avoid placing the pin on the front or near an exposed hem, since others will be able to see it if you do.
Run a metal thimble or brush over the fabric. Running a metal object across your clothing discharges the static electricity. After drying your clothes, put a metal thimble on your finger. Run the finger across the surface of every clothing item to reduce the static charge. You can use a metal-bristled brush instead of a thimble if you prefer, although this may not be the best choice if your fabric could snag on the bristles.[3]
As with other tricks involving metal, the idea is to discharge the electrical charge to prevent static. Touching any metal object will accomplish the same goal if you do not have a metal thimble.
Drag a metal object over the shirt to gather electrical charge. If you don't have a thimble, brush, hanger, or pin, any metal object will successfully remove an electrical charge. A fork, spoon, bowl, gear, screwdriver, or any other object will work so long as it's made of metal. Make sure that your metal object is clean before running it over your clothes.[4]
Spritz your clothes with hairspray to remove static. Grab any can of hairspray. Stand away from your clothing and spray it with the hairspray for 3-4 seconds. This will lightly cover the clothing in the hairspray without soaking it. Hairspray is specially formulated to combat static in your hair, but the same chemicals will prevent static cling from occurring on your clothes.[5]
Do this immediately before you wear your clothes so that the hairspray doesn't have time to wear off or dissipate.
Hairspray won't normally stain your fabric, but it may leave a residue behind. If you're worried about staining or damaging your clothing item, turn it inside-out before spraying the hair product on to your clothes.
Spray a fabric conditioner on your clothes to minimize cling. Mix 1-part of liquid fabric softener with 30-parts water and fill an empty spray bottle with the ingredients. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients together. Stand away from your clothing and mist your clothing for 4-5 seconds. This will minimize the effect of static cling on your clothing. Do this right before you're going to put your clothes on for the best results.[6]
Most fabric softeners won't stain your clothing, especially when it is diluted with water. If you're worried about staining your clothes, turn the clothing inside-out before spritzing it.
Stain removers and wrinkle removers will usually work just as well.
Mist your dried clothes lightly with water. Fill an empty spray bottle with lukewarm tap water. Stand away from your clothing and spritz it 4-5 times while standing . Spray enough water to mist your clothing without soaking it or making it damp. The water will neutralize the static charges that cause cling to occur.[7]
Do this right before you put your clothing item on for the best results.
Add of baking soda to your wash cycle. Baking soda will function the same way as fabric conditioner to absorb the electrical charges as your clothes wash. Before you start your wash cycle, pour of baking soda into the drum of the washer. Add your standard detergent and wash your clothes as you normally do.[8]
If you plan on machine drying your clothes, some of the charge may come back after the baking soda has been washed out. This method works best when used in conjunction with another way of removing static. You may not need to use another method if you air dry your clothes instead of machine-drying them, though.
For smaller loads with less than of clothing, feel free to decrease the amount of baking soda to .
Baking soda effectively creates a barrier around each garment, preventing negative and positive charges from building up and causing the garments to stick together.
Baking soda has the added benefit of neutralizing odors.
Sprinkle of white vinegar into your rinse cycle. After the washing machine completes its initial wash cycle, pause the machine and pour of distilled white vinegar over your clothes. Restart the machine and allow it to continue its rinse cycle. Vinegar softens fabrics, preventing them from becoming too stiff and dry. This also helps to reduce the amount of static build-up.[9]
Do not use vinegar with bleach. These ingredients produce a noxious gas when they're combined. Do not use this method with the baking soda, although it's fine if you want to use tinfoil and fabric softener.
If you don't want your clothes to smell like white vinegar, soak a washcloth in the vinegar instead and add that to the rinse cycle. The odor shouldn't be too overwhelming, even if you add the vinegar straight to the rinse water.
If you have a softener dispenser in your machine, you can pour the vinegar inside at the start of the entire cycle. Adding vinegar to your clothing also results in brighter colors and cleaner whites.
White vinegar works best, but in a pinch, you can use apple cider vinegar. You may not want to use apple cider vinegar on white or lightly-colored clothing, though.
Throw a ball of tinfoil into the washing machine with your clothes. Take a sheet of tinfoil and crumple it up into a small ball. Pack it tightly by squeezing it between both of your hands over and over. Add your ball of tinfoil to your washer and run your normal cycle. The tinfoil discharges positive and negative charges that the washing machine produces.[10]
You can use tinfoil along with any other method, although you should avoid mixing baking soda and vinegar in your washing machine.
Use fabric softener to prevent charges from building up. Liquid fabric softener helps prevent static from building up during the wash cycle. Add of liquid softener to your standard cycle per your softener's instructions. As wet clothes are tossed around in the washer, they build up an electrical charge that causes them to stick together. Fabric softeners contain chemicals designed to stop that electricity from building.[11]
Softener sheets work the same way as fabric softener. Get sheets if you want to avoid messy liquids. Softener sheets are typically added to the dryer, though.
You can use fabric softener alongside any other method in this section.
Add a dryer ball to your dryer before adding your wet clothes. Dryer balls will work the exact same way as the sheets or fabric softener. They are designed to soften clothes without the use of chemicals. Add 1-2 dryer balls to your machine when you transfer your wet clothes to the dryer and run your dryer cycle as you normally do.[12]
Dryer balls also minimize the amount of contact fabrics have with one another in the machine. Electrical charges build up in fabric as one piece rubs up against another, so minimizing this contact also minimizes static.
Add a damp washcloth to the last 10 minutes of the drying cycle. When your drying cycle has 10 minutes remaining, pause it. Switch the dryer to the lowest heat setting and throw a clean, damp washcloth into the machine. Turn the cycle back on and finish it. The water will absorb some of the electrical charges from the dryer and encourage clothes to remain soft and cling-free.[13]
This is essentially the same thing as misting your clothes with water after they dry.
Shake your clothes when removing them from the dryer. As you remove each item of clothing from your dryer, give them 2-3 quick shakes. This prevents static from setting in as your clothes are placed on another surface.
This only works if you take your clothes out immediately after they've finished drying.
Air dry your clothes to avoid static altogether. Instead of running your clothes through the machine, dry them by hanging them on a clothesline or closet rod. Take each item out of the machine after it has finished washing and hang it on the line or rod with a hanger or clothespins. Alternatively, you can run the dryer through half of a cycle to partially dry your clothes and then air dry them for the remainder of the time.[14]
A good portion of the electrical build-up responsible for static cling occurs when wet clothes are completely dried out using heat. Air drying prevents clothing from becoming extremely dry, which also prevents it from developing too much of an electrical charge.
For an added layer of cling removal, hang your clothes on metal hangers to air dry them.
Moisturize your skin to keep clothes from sticking. Any kind of moisturizing lotion will work to remove static cling. Before putting your clothes on, rub moisturizer into your legs, torso, and arms. Work it into your skin until there are no visible globs of lotion remaining. Moisturizer will dispel static as your clothes absorb it from your skin.[15]
By moisturizing your skin, you remove dryness that would otherwise attract a highly-charged fabric.
You can rub lotion over your hands before removing laundry from the dryer or folding your clothes. This will prevent excess electrical charge from transferring from your hands to the fabric.
Use a moisturizing conditioner to maintain your hairstyle. If static cling from your clothing is causing your hair to become frizzy, get a moisturizing conditioner or hair product. When you shower, rub the conditioner through your hair after shampooing. If you're using a moisturizing hair product, dry your hair and work the product through each section of your hair before styling it.[16]
Silicone-based conditioners will help keep static away from your hair more effectively, but there's a lot of debate over whether silicone is good for your hair or not.
Moisturizing your hair will keep your hair from drying out. Dry hair is prone to attracting static electricity, which is what causes static cling.
Swap your rubber-soled shoes out for a leather pair. Most shoes have rubber soles. This presents a problem with static though, since static charges can build up in rubber. If you find your clothes developing static cling throughout the day, swap your shoes out for a pair of leather-soled shoes.[17]
Wearing leather shoes will help you stay grounded since leather does not build up electrical charge as easily as rubber.

Ask your local soup kitchen if they need more volunteers. Soup kitchens don't just need people to cook and serve food on Thanksgiving. They'll also need volunteers to collect food, set up the service area, seat people, make deliveries, and clean up afterwards. Many soup kitchens get a lot of volunteers for Thanksgiving, though, so call ahead to see if they need any more help before you show up.[1]
Volunteer at a local aid organization for a few hours. Some aid organizations may be holding Thanksgiving aid events, which could be anything from food and clothing drives to events for veterans or homeless people. Search online for charities in your area, then call or look on their website to see if they're hosting any volunteering events on Thanksgiving.
Visit a nursing home for a few hours. Some nursing home residents may not have any family to visit for Thanksgiving. You can volunteer at a home for the elderly and do anything from decorating the home for Thanksgiving to helping cook and distribute the big meal.[2]
Call a local home and ask about visiting times, or see whether they need any extra help around the holidays. Plan out activities to do, like listening to music, chatting, or watching a holiday movie.
Give blood or volunteer at a blood drive. Blood banks are always in need of more donations, and giving on Thanksgiving can give a patient the chance to spend another holiday season with their loved ones. Ask local hospitals where the closest blood center is to you, or look online to see if a blood drive will be hosted in your area on Thanksgiving.[3]
If you can't give blood, volunteer to become a donor ambassador for the Red Cross. You'll help run blood drives and make donors comfortable after they've donated.

Run or walk in a "turkey trot" for a local charity. Turkey trot runs are a popular way to get some exercise and raise money for a good cause on Thanksgiving. To participate in one, simply search online and look for a distance you can do and cause you support.[4]

You can also donate money to fund care packages.
Donate non-perishable food items to a local food bank. Schools, workplaces, and churches will often host food drives during the holiday season to help feed in need. You can donate food items at these places, or call the food bank directly to see how you can make a contribution.[9]
Organize a food drive in your area. If there's no food drive going on at your work, school, or church,, start your own! Contact food banks or charities nearby and ask what you need to do to run your own food drive and collect donations for them. Ask local businesses, churches, and schools if you can set up donation sites in their buildings.[10]
Ask family and friends to help you! You'll need plenty of volunteers to help you advertise the drive, donate food, and drop it off at the food bank.
Start or donate to a crowdfund campaign. If you're passionate about a particular cause, creating a crowdfunding campaign for it is a great way to encourage family and friends to donate. Share your campaign on social media and email it around to loved ones individually to ask for donations, and ask them to spread it around too. Make sure they know that you're not raising the money for yourself, but for a charity.[11]

Aid organizations work year-round to help people in need, from the homeless and hungry to people affected by natural disasters and humanitarian crises. Donating to one of these charities ensures that your money will be put to use in good causes across the world.
Donate to victims of a recent disaster. People affected by natural disasters and other crises may have lost money, their homes, or even loved ones, which can make it difficult to celebrate Thanksgiving. Look up funds for a specific disaster and see how you can help or donate.
For example, you might choose to help people in Indonesia, who were hit with a destructive earthquake and tsunami in September 2018.
Give to a local shelter to help in your community. You don't have to contribute to a large aid organization to make a difference. In fact, sometimes donating on a smaller scale can make an even bigger impact. Call homeless shelters, church organizations, animal shelters, and other non-profits in your area and ask how you can make your donation.[12]
Sponsor an impoverished child or family to know exactly who you're helping. Call ahead before bringing your children to an event such as helping to serve dinner at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Some organizations do not allow minors to serve food due to safety regulations (sharp objects in the kitchen, or danger of being burned at steam tables).
Writing checks is an easy and important skill every adult should know. To write a check, fill in the current date on the line in the upper right corner, the name of the recipient in the "Pay" field, the numerical amount next to the dollar sign ($), and the written form of the same amount on the line beneath; sign the check on the bottom right line and consider adding a "memo" about the check's purpose on the lower left line. The more often you write checks, the more natural the process will become.
Write the date on the line in the upper right-hand corner. There will be a blank space next to or above the word "Date." Remember that a check is a legal document, and the date written here should always be the day that you sign the bottom of the check.[1]
Write the name of the recipient. Write the name of the person or company you're sending the check to next to the line that says "Pay to the Order of." If it's a company and you're not sure exactly what it's called, make sure you get that information right before you write the check. You can also just pay the check to "Cash," but be careful, because that means that anyone can cash it.[2]
If it's to an individual, include both their first and last names. If they are a 'Jr.' or a 'Sr.' you should include this as well.
If the check is going to an organization, write out its full name. Do not use acronyms unless explicitly given permission.
Write the amount of the check to the right of the dollar sign. Write the exact amount, using dollars and cents. If the check is for twenty dollars, write "20.00."
Write the monetary amount of the check in word form below the "Pay to the Order of" line. Make sure you also express the number of cents if there are cents, or write "even" at the end of the amount so that another person doesn't add more money to the amount. If you've written a check for $20.00, write either "Twenty dollars and 0/100 cents," "Twenty dollars even," or just "Twenty" with a line running all the way from the right of the word to the end of the line.[3]
Sign the check on the line in the bottom right corner. Your check will be invalid if it is not personally signed.[4]
Fill out the memo section on the bottom left of the check. Though this part of the check is optional, it can be helpful to write a note to yourself or the recipient to remember what the check is for. You can write "For May rent" if you're sending a rent check. Also, many companies or landlords require that you provide some other information in the memo section; some companies require you to write your ID number in the "Memo" section, and if you're writing a rent check for your apartment, you should write the apartment # right in the memo section.[5]
Always draw a line if there is still space after you write your amount in word form. This will prevent someone writing in an additional few zeros.
Always sign your name the same way.
Always use a pen in a dark color such as blue or black. Gel pens are recommended because ink removing liquids do not work as well with the gel.
If you're writing a check that you don't want to be cashed until a certain day, write the day that you'd like it to be cashed. For example, if you're writing a rent check early but don't want it cashed until the first of the month, write that date on the check. Note, however, post dating won't guarantee that the recipient will not be able to cash the check before the date written on the check
When you write the amount of the check in the little box, make sure you write it as close to the dollar sign as possible. Forgers will try to sneak in an extra digit.[6]
Always make sure you use the correct date. If you don't know the date, guess an earlier one. You can postdate a check, but not everyone will accept them. [7]
Make sure your check is written out correctly with the correct spelling of the name and the correct amount of money due to that person.
When tearing the check from your checkbook, be sure to tear as cleanly as possible. The printed numbers along the bottom of the check, called the MICR line, are necessary for cashing or depositing the check; so is the check number, usually located in the top right near the date. If any of these numbers are partially torn off, the check will be rendered invalid.
Remember that post-dated checks can be deposited immediately. The date is used to determine when a check becomes stale and will be refused by the bank (typically 7 years after the date unless otherwise specified), not the earliest date that the check can be cashed. A lot of people have been burned by unscrupulous people promising to hold onto checks until the specified date(s).
