Blueprints: The Maximum PC Recommended Builds (September 2012)

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 11:38 AM PDT

NeweggWhat time is it? Blueprints time! We've built three rigs at three approximate price points: Baseline, Performance, and, because you asked for it, Budget. Baseline gets you a powerful, no-compromises rig, suitable for gaming and content creation at 1080p. Performance gets you more, and Budget is for those who want to be frugal.

These rigs are lab-tested and editor-approved, and we'll update them every month. Feedback is, of course, welcome. Tell us what you think!

Blueprints is sponsored by NewEgg.com. All parts selections are made by MaximumPC editors.

Note: Updated 9.21.2012 with the builds from the November 2012 magazine issue.

Baseline

An unlocked Ivy Bridge quad-core and a kick-ass midrange GPU power this lean, no-compromises gaming PC. Thanks to falling HDD and SSD prices, we're able to get both speed and capacity. On the video side, we were torn this month between the Radeon HD 7850, which has dropped to around $220, the 7870 GHz Edition, which is around $290, and the new GeForce GTX 660 Ti, which outperforms the 7870 GHz Edition in most tests and is $310. We settled on the 660 Ti, but it's a close one: The 7870 GHz Edition and the 7950 would also be good picks.

Baseline
baseline

Approximate Price: $1,330

Performance

For the performance machine, it's a hard choice between the Ivy Bridge Core i7-3770K and the Sandy Bridge-E Core i7-3820. Both are quad-core CPUs with HyperThreading, but Sandy Bridge-E gives you more of an upgrade path: Ivy Bridge-E will come out next year, and there are always six-core Sandy Bridge-E processors. Depending on your needs, either would be a good choice. Either way, you get plenty of overclocking headroom, a kick-ass GPU, 16GB of DDR3, a Blu-ray burner, SSD, 3TB hard drive, and a sleek case with plenty of expansion opportunities, all for under $1,900.

Approximate Price: $1,870

Budget

Budget Rosewill 218

So let it be written, so let it be done! We promised you a sub-$1,000 budget machine to alternate with our $3,000-plus Ultra configuration, and here it is! Our Budget box is the machine we need, not the machine we deserve. It has an inexpensive, overclockable Phenom II X4 chip and a modern motherboard that supports USB 3.0 and 6Gb/s SATA—albeit with only one x16 PCIe slot. For just over $600, we don't get a fancy SSD, classy chassis, or a Blu-ray drive, but at least we have a 1TB 7,200rpm boot drive, 4GB of RAM, and a modern DirectX 11 GPU, the Radeon HD 7770. If you have a little more scratch, you can easily swap the Phenom II CPU for a faster Bulldozer or "Vishera" chip when that comes out, get a faster GPU, expand your RAM, get an aftermarket cooler for overclocking, or a fancier case and beefier PSU—whatever your heart desires. But this Budget box is enough to get you started with enthusiast computing without dipping into your college fund.

Verizon CFO Strips 'Unlimited' of Any Meaning, Says It's "Just a Word"

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 11:23 AM PDT

Verizon Wireless StoreWhether you camped out in line and picked up an iPhone 5 this morning or upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S III instead (or any other smartphone), the stakes are the same for Verizon Wireless customers. In order to qualify for that sweet subsidiary pricing, you have to upchuck your grandfathered unlimited data plan and swallow a relatively new Share Everything plan. But hey, don't worry about it, because as Verizon's Chief Financial Officer explains, "Unlimited is just a word; it doesn't really mean anything."

Um, actually it does. We double-checked with Merriam-Webster just to make sure, and sure enough, it's in there with not one, but three definitions. One of them defines unlimited as "boundless, infinite."

It's not totally fair to take Fran Shammo's statement literally, but no matter how you slice it, it's a poor choice of words on a sensitive topic. The trend in wireless is, for the most part, away from unlimited data plans and towards shared caps. At least that's what AT&T and Verizon have done.

Shammo's statement came during a Goldman Sachs conference in New York (you can view the webcast or read a PDF transcript on Verizon's website), and what he was trying to convey is how popular his company's Share Everything plans have become.

"We have more people going to shared than we actually anticipated. Adn the thing that really surprised us is we have a lot of people coming off unlimited to go to shared," Shammo said. "So what customers are understanding and through our good sales routine is once you explain to a customer their usage on a monthly basis, unlimited is just a word, it doesn't really mean anything and that people don't really -- I think a lot of consumers think they consume a lot more data than they really do. So that whole unlimited thing I thing I think is going by the wayside and they see the benefit of going to the shared."

His comments make more sense when put into context, but at the same time, he fails to mention that customers don't have a choice in the matter when upgrading. Not a good choice, anyway. If you were to pick up the new iPhone 5, for example, you could keep your existing unlimited data plan, but only if you pay full price for the handset ($649 for the 16GB model). If you want the subsidized pricing ($199 for 16GB), you have to commit to two years of Share Everything. In that way, the numbers are surely skewed.

Details Emerge on Nvidia's GeForce GTX 650 Ti, Could Launch Next Month

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 10:34 AM PDT

Nvidia Graphics CardIf you fancy yourself an Nvidia fan, you might be feeling left out of the online water cooler chatter and wondering what the flip is going on with all the recent AMD graphics card leaks, including the mid-range 8870 and 8850 parts, and high-end 8970. Lest anyone think we're playing favorites, we're just the messenger (so don't shoot!), and you'll be happy to know that we have some info on Nvidia's upcoming GeForce GTX 650 Ti hardware.

We've rounded up the rumored info that's floating around the Web, and here's the gist of it. The GTX 650 Ti is being built around Nvidia's GK106 GPU, which is a 28nm slice of silicon that, in this instance, has an entire Graphics Processing Core (GPC) disabled, effectively reducing the CUDA core count to 576 (down from 970 on the GTX 660).

The TMU (Texture Mapping Unit) count is reduced to 48 (from 80), and ROPs will be the same as the GTX 660 (24). There's some conflicting information about the size of the memory bus. Some sites are reporting 192-bit, while others are saying it will be 128-bit. Finally, look for for the GPU to run at 960MHz (base, with no boost) and the memory at 1,350MHz (5,400MHz effective).

Nvidia Graphics Card Fan

Based on what we've read, the GTX 650 Ti is (unofficially) scheduled to launch on October 9 and expect to retail for around $169 to $189, a price that pits it against AMD's Radeon HD 7850.

iPod touch 5th Generation

We've been working hard on our ultra in-depth iPhone 5 review and will have you something to read on that very very soon. But in the meantime, check out all the other awesome gear we've been playing with in the last seven days!

Hands on: iPod touch 5th Generation review

It's been a couple of years since we saw a new iPod touch. The smartphone invasion, combined with the success of Spotify and other streaming services has very much put a stop to the popularity of dedicated music players. But that hasn't stopped Apple refreshing both the iPod touch, which now comes in multiple colours, and the iPod nano.

The touch we have here packs the same A5 dual-core chip as we've seen in the iPhone 4S which means it's faster and much more graphically capable than previous models. It's definitely a worthy upgrade for owners of previous iPod touch models that want to take full advantage of iOS 6's new features. Apple's fifth-gen iPod touch can be preordered at www.apple.com: $299 (249) for 32GB and $399 (£329) for 64GB, and it ships in October.

Hands on: Canon EOS 6D review

Hands on: Canon EOS 6D review

All things considered, the Canon EOS 6D looks like a pretty decent DSLR, with the Wi-Fi and GPS technology being nice bonuses for the average photographer. At 20.2MP, the resolution is not a great deal more than that offered by Canon's APS-C format DSLRs, but there should be a significant image quality advantage. You'll also be happy that the Canon EOS 6D uses SD format cards rather than CF, but we wonder whether this could be a limiting factor for video shooting.

Priced at £1,799/$2,099 body only or £2,519.99/$2,899 with an EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM kit lens, the Canon EOS 6D is appreciably more affordable than the Nikon D600. But the figure still feels a little on the high side for a camera aimed at enthusiast photographers, and many will wait a few months for the price to come down.

Hands on: Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 review

Hands on: Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5

As before, the new Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 is smaller than the Olympus PEN, but bigger than the Olympus PEN Mini E-PM2. The compact system camera also accepts interchangeable grips that are fixed onto the body by a chunky screw, and boasts a touchscreen. Like the Olympus PEN Lite E-PL3 that it replaces, the Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 has a tilting screen, but this 3-inch device is now touch-sensitive. The touch sensitivity doesn't extend to making menu selections, but it functions with the Live Guide that helps novices change settings.

The Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5's interchangeable grips are an option we have seen before with the Olympus PEN, and its a great idea that enables you to find the grip that suits you. This, and the tilting LCD screen, makes the Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 a more versatile camera.

LG Optimus G review

Hands on: LG Optimus G review

Is the LG Optimus G the phone of the year? It's too early to say, for a number of reasons: the first being that we won't see it in the US until later in 2012 and may never see it on European shores at all. Then there's the issue of price, or lack of one. While LG usually undercuts its competitors, it will need to do so pretty strongly here to make sure it stands out of the throng of top-end smartphones available today.

It's a well-designed handset with plenty of interesting features we can't wait to get our teeth into, as well as more grunt than most other phones out there. We're not sure it will be the phone to propel LG back to the front (there needs to be a phone that takes the user by surprise with a new UI or fantastic design to achieve that) but it's one of the best the Lucky Group have come up with in a long while.

HTC Windows Phone 8X review

Hands on: HTC Windows Phone 8X review

What we can say so far is that we're fans of the new design HTC has brought to the table, and as long as the on-screen performance matches the quality of the body, the HTC Windows Phone 8X is shaping up to be quite a device.

AMD Readies New Flagship Radeon HD 8000 Series Graphics Card

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 08:13 AM PDT

AMD TenerlifeYesterday we told you about a pair of Radeon HD 8000 series graphics cards set to storm the market at competitive price points, with the Radeon HD 8870 expected to rival Nvidia's GeForce GTX 680 for $279, and the 8850 taking on the GTX 670 for $199 (both are expected MSRPs). What about the high end? Fear not, AMD is working on an enthusiast grade 8000 series part, as well.

A leaked slide tipping AMD's next generation "Tenerife" GPU found its way to the Web (funny how that always happens), and it's a beast. As part of AMD's Sea Island based HD 8000 Series, the Tenerife part is a power user card that will dethrone the HD 7970. We'll go ahead and call it HD 8970, with the understanding that this isn't the official name (yet).

The proposed 8970 card is said to have 2,304 Stream Processors, 128 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. Clockspeeds are unknown, but it will be capable of more than 4.5 TFLOPS of processing power and 20 percent more compute performance than the current flagship part.

AMD Tenerlife Slide

Other features include 3GB of GDDR5 memory racing along at 6GHz on a 384-bit bus, two mini DisplayPorts, an HDMI port, and DVI connectivity. TPD will be 250W.

NCsoft seeks to correct Lineage II rebalancing changes with player feedback

NCsoft seeks to correct Lineage II rebalancing changes with player feedback
Change is inevitable in any MMO, but in a letter, to players Lineage II Development Director Gon Namkun acknowledged that not all change is good. As Lineage II has developed over the years, classes have been added and then changed around and stripped of many of their distinctive characteristics in the name of balance. And NCsoft wants to bring some of the diversity back to the classes.

Gon Namkun explains the need for diversification and offers four possible solutions. However, instead of just forging ahead with changes, the development team wants player feedback: Players can vote on their preferred method through a poll on the official site. This poll, open until September 26th, 2012, is specifically for Western players as the Korean market poll has already been completed.

Despite the low signal-to-noise ratio, we do get useful info from our tipsters, often in the form of breaking news, obscure and interesting tidbits, and ideas for further coverage.

Runes of Magic previews Chrysalias Shadows patch
Dubbed the "Mysterious Land of the Elements," Chrysalia will be the next step for Runes of Magic adventurers. This strange region is set to open on September 25th, but Gameforge has a preview video to whet your appetite for the journey to come.

Chrysalia is dominated by strong elemental features, such as waterfalls and lava, and looks to be populated by many intelligent insect species. Some of these, like the Garon, are friendly, but others, like the Kulech, will spit acid in your face and slurp your insides for dinner. Or so we've heard.

Next Tuesday's patch will also introduce a new challenging instance to the game. Check out the flyby video after the jump and let us know what you think!

ArenaNet talks security in Guild Wars 2

ArenaNet talks security in Guild Wars 2
Account security has been a hot topic in the world of Guild Wars 2 between the hubbub about the email verification system and the woes of hacked accounts. It's been such a hot topic that ArenaNet President Mike O'Brien wrote up a big ol' post about it.

O'Brien began by reiterating one of the golden rules of account security: Use a strong and unique password for any account that you don't wish to have compromised. He pointed out that simply having a strong password does you almost no good if you've got the same password with the same email used for an account elsewhere -- if one such account is compromised, they all are. The same rule of having a unique password applies to the email account you use for authenticating your GW2 login attempts: the email authentication system can only protect you if your email is secure. Fans of two-factor authentication will be pleased to hear that Guild Wars 2 will have a two-step authentication system soon. "We had our own homegrown implementation of smartphone two-factor authenticator in testing, but we're going to pull it back and instead integrate Guild Wars 2 with Google Authenticator, which already has robust authenticator implementations on most major smartphone platforms. We expect to roll this out in the next two weeks."

But that's not all! ArenaNet is also building a password blacklist (which is 20 million passwords long and growing) that blocks all passwords for which hackers are already scanning. According to O'Brien, "the rate of account hacking was about 1.5% for accounts created before this blacklist was in place, and is about 0.1% for accounts created after." This announcement comes with the request that existing customers change their password so that the blacklist protects them as well.

Read O'Brien's full post on the GW2 news page.

Linden Lab reveals its next game, Patterns

      Pointy.
Where does a company like Linden Lab go after Second Life? Obviously any other titles from the studio need to be creative and offer players a wide realm of personalized options... but Second Life is so open that it's difficult to follow up with something that's any more open to player creativity. Nevertheless, the company is certainly aiming for that with its upcoming new title, Patterns. And while the game looks at a glance like Minecraft with triangles, there's more to the concept than that.

As explained in the trailer, Patterns is focused on an experience not dissimilar to Minecraft but with a heavier focus on creativity. The game will sport a real-time physics engine as demonstrated in the trailer, giving objects physical properties that come into play as they enter the world. While the game is still in very early development, you can get a sense of what's in the future by glancing at the trailer just past the break.

New trailer released for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Well, the time is actually in a few months. But let's not get nitpicky.
If you're looking forward to the release of Final Fantasy XIV's large-scale revamp, you're probably devouring every piece of information you can find about the game. So you'll be happy to know that just beyond the cut down yonder lies the latest trailer for the impending relaunch, featuring some recycled footage from previous trailers and some new shots of the game as a whole. Also no voiceovers, if you prefer your information in text form.

What we have seen are elements from the first trailers and some of the bigger group battles, including the Meteor spell. What we haven't seen is some of the in-game footage, including more group battles showing off combat and some of the new landscapes featured in the relaunch. There's also a good look at some of the new starter outfits in the game rather than in concept art. If that sounds like enough reason for you, go ahead and check out the full trailer just past the break.

Guns of Icarus to launch October 29th, new trailer released
Muse Games is pushing the launch of its steampunk airship combat title Guns of Icarus back by a month. The indie offering will debut on October 29th, and the firm is currently accepting pre-orders that offer immediate beta access.

The team bills its game as the "first cooperative airship combat game mixing together first-person shooter action with team-based strategy." Crews of up to four players may band together on a ship, filling the Captain, Gunner, or Engineer roles and taking on other crews in the post-apocalyptic unfriendly skies.

Muse recently added a spectator mode, costumes, achievements, stat tracking, and friend lists to the game. The firm has also produced a launch trailer, which you can view after the cut.

The Guild Counsel: Can guilds save the economy?

The Guild Counsel Can guilds save the economy
Wait! Before you hit that comment button about the absurdity of the title above, hear me out! A few weeks ago, I stumbled on a video that touched on this very topic, and I felt it was a perfect discussion point for this column. The video is actually titled How World of Warcraft could save your Business and the Economy, and it's a commentary by John Seely Brown that's part of a series called Big Think.

What Seely Brown argues is that he'd prefer to hire an expert World of Warcraft player over someone who graduated from Harvard with an MBA, and he goes on to explain why businesses can learn from the way top players and guilds function in game. It might sound crazy, but it's worth considering, and in this week's Guild Counsel, we'll look at the topic both from Brown's WoW point of view and from a broader view of MMOs in general.

Chaos Theory: Why you shouldn't worry for The Secret World

Chaos Theory - Why you shouldn't worry for The Secret World
These last few weeks have not been full of good news for fans of Funcom or its nifty modern-day horror-fantasy mashup called The Secret World. There were some layoffs. There was a content delay or three. There were hints of free-to-play (which, despite all the in-roads made over the past year, is still seen as something approaching failure by portions of the gaming populace). And let's not forget the requisite comment section naysaying that accompanies any MMO.

Join me after the cut and I'll tell you why none of that stuff worries me.

The Summoner's Guidebook: Part random, part mid, all LoL

The Summoner's Guidebook Part random, part mid, all LoL
One of the most popular alternative gametypes in League of Legends is All Random All Mid, or ARAM. ARAM is a simple concept; it involves a single lane on which all 10 players must fight, rather than the three lanes of Summoner's Rift or two paths of Dominion. Additionally, all champions selected are randomized; you're never sure whom you'll be playing in an ARAM match until champion select begins.

ARAM began life on Summoner's Rift, hence its name. The single lane used for ARAM was the middle lane, and traveling into the jungle or other lanes meant immediate disqualification of one's team. It was fraught with the normal trappings of an alternative ruleset; the rules for ARAM were not enforced by the game, so players were expected to play within the community-created rules. It evolved into ARAB, played on the Crystal Scar, with two teams fighting over the bottom capture points. ARAB proved to have its own flaws, most notably that games went on for a bit longer than normal, but the passive gold and experience as well as the health relic helped to add interesting spice to the game mode.

Finally, ARAM became a more or less supported gametype with the addition of the Proving Grounds. That addition streamlined ARAM gameplay while keeping some of the elements of the Crystal Scar version of the game such as health relics and Dominion items. Today, while there is no matchmaking for ARAM, it is extremely popular in custom matches.

Four years of WAR An interview with Producer James Casey
To celebrate Warhammer Online's fourth anniversary this week, we got in touch with EA Mythic Producer James Casey to talk about the past, present, and future of WAAAGH!

Massively: Four years is a sizable length of time in any MMO's life. How does it feel to hit that mark?

James Casey: It feels great to have been able to have support from the Warhammer and gaming community for the last four years. That support has allowed us to continue bringing them the thrilling Realm vs. Realm combat and engrossing worlds that they have come to expect from Mythic and Games Workshop.

To your point about four years being a sizable length of time for an MMO, I will say that as a studio, we actually have a stable of MMOs that have been around for a damn respectable amount of time. From Ultima Online hitting its amazing 15th anniversary this year to Dark Age of Camelot having already broken that fabled 10-year mark, we've had a remarkable run in the MMO space, and I think that I can speak for everyone who has come and gone or still remains in saying a heartfelt thanks to all of our fans and customers over all the years. We owe that track record to them, and we hope that as we continue to evolve and develop as a studio and across our products, we can provide more of that sense of community in all of our offerings.

LotRO's Habitat for Hobbanity is its new endgame
Lord of the Rings Online has a brand-new endgame activity coming with next month's Riders of Rohan, and it's called "Hytbold." Senior Designer Joe Barry penned a dev diary to explain just how and why Hytbold won't be like anything players have seen before.

Hytbold is the name of a burned-out village that adventurers will rebuild and restock. Through the use of instances, open tapping, remote looting, and phasing, LotRO will allow each player fix the town up and get it back into shape over time. Players have over 150 repairs to make to over 24 buildings in the town, which is accomplished through daily quests, participating in mounted combat, and even fishing.

The rewards for coming to the aid of Hytbold are significant. Turbine's prepared to hand out class and trait-specific armor sets that are comparable to raid gear, a big ending to the region's story, and the honor of being named a Thane of Rohan. The best part of this is that players can rebuild the entire town solo if need be, although there are grouping options as well.

[Update: The team also released a big batch of Riders of Rohan enemy screenshots today; we've included them within our LotRO gallery after the break.]

TERA offering group loot bonuses, instance reset scrolls
En Masse is running a new "Instance Gratification" promotion for TERA over the next two weekends. The game's official website says that the goal is community building. Given the recent server merges and the upheaval generally associated with such, we think that's probably a solid idea.

If you're level 59 or under, you'll get 50% more loot drops than normal when you group up and tackle the game's dungeon content. Players of all levels get an instance reset scroll every day as long as they log in.

The bonus weekends run from September 21st through the 24th and September 28th through October 1st.

Star Wars: The Old Republic - companions
MMOs sometimes skimp on quality-of-life features in favor of combat. Fortunately Star Wars: The Old Republic's 1.4 patch is looking at the little things, according to a new post on the game's website.

The update adds a new group finder teleport back function as well as delayed binding for those times when you accidentally roll greed or spend your hard-earned commendations on the wrong item. BioWare is also gifting players with some new avatar mood options (think /alarmed or /cheery). Finally, the patch brings companion customization tweaks to the table as well. You can hide helmets and "unify colors to chest" to avoid those godawful mismatched outfits.
