Mozilla to Take on Chromecast with Firefox OS-running Device

Posted: 22 Jun 2014 04:38 PM PDT

Firefox OS Streaming Stick Prototype

Prototype already in hands of a select group of developers

Google's nearly year-old Chromecast dongle is about to get some fresh competition. Mozilla is gearing up to take on the $35 Chromecast with a Firefox OS-powered media streaming stick. The company's plans came to light a few days back when a Mozilla evangelist shared a photo of a "fully open TV casting prototype device running Firefox OS" via Twitter.

Mozilla evangelist Christian Heilmann's tweet outing the prototype was soon followed by a blog post containing a video of the said device (below) over at Gigaom. In the post, author Janko Roettgers describes the still unnamed streaming device as being part of an "ambitious project that aims to combine Mozilla's commitment to openness with a Chromecast-like media streaming device," adding that he has been closely monitoring the effort for some time now.

Per Roettgers, the device, which is currently in the possession of a handful of developers, can also run a number of Chromecast apps. Further, unlike Google's dongle, the Firefox OS-powered device won't be accompanied by any content restrictions. If that's not enough, it will come with an open boot loader and support casting from almost all major platforms.

Microsoft Unintentionally Confirms Surface Mini’s Existence

Surface Mini

Surface Pro 3 user guide makes many references to long-rumored smaller sibling

Microsoft was widely expected to lift the curtain on an 8-inch tablet called the Surface Mini at its special event in New York on May 20, 2014. While the event did go through as planned, the long-rumored tablet was nowhere to be seen. What the world got instead was a 12-inch Windows 8.1 tablet called the Surface Pro 3 and a bunch of reports that suggested the Mini had been abandoned by Microsoft at the very last minute.

But in case you had any doubts about the existence of the Surface Mini, Microsoft's user guide proofreading department all but confirmed the tablet's existence this week when it failed to efface as many as four references to the Mini from the Surface Pro 3 user guide.

"I know it [Surface Mini] exists. It was the primary announcement a month ago, delayed literally last minute," wrote veteran Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott, who discovered the vestigial Mini references in the user guide, in a tweet Friday.

The Crew dev blog talks Raid, Circuit, and Perf spec cars

Ubisoft's latest dev blog for open world racer The Crew is worth a read if you're partial to cars, MMO-style groups, and boss fights. It describes a takedown challenge mission called A Little Nudge that "wouldn't be out of place in a Driver game."

It also mentions the Raid spec, and that's not "raid" in the typical MMO sense of the word but "raid" as in a car class designed to "tear through the hills, valleys, and backroads" of Yosemite and survive plenty of "high-speed brutality."

In addition to Raid, Circuit, and Perf specs, The Crew also features 20 upgrade slots per car, which Ubisoft says will please gearheads and gamers alike.

One Shots: Child's play

TSW
Today, my friends, you are going to be disturbed by this column -- disturbed and delighted, puzzled and tantalized. But I'm afraid that we're going to have to begin with a sight that is quite unsettling, so if there are any small children in the room, get them to hold your hand because there's no way you are brave enough to witness this.

"I recently returned to The Secret World and have been having a blast, but I think this is the scariest scene I have come across whilst playing," reader Balsbigbrother. "OK, so it's a little gory with the meat cleaver in the head but those dolls and the shadows they make on the walls, eeek! The game atmosphere kind of builds up to a point where your own imagination takes over. So while I was in that room, I kept thinking if all those dolls suddenly turned around to face me, I would seriously lose it and maybe need psychiatric counseling for several months afterwards."

You're not alone, man. The Nursery was one of the most terrifying places I've ever visited in a video game. Let's see who dares to see the whole tableau after the break!

The Daily Grind: Have you ever come back to a game for the double XP?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT

I logged into Star Wars: The Old Republic this weekend and came to a sad realization. I really don't want to play it any more. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, so I usually find something to like about the game even though themepark mechanics and eternal gear grinds aren't my first choice. Lately I lack the desire to keep leveling, though, which is unfortunately at odds with my goal of seeing all the cutscenes for all eight class stories (again, Star Wars fan, completionist, can't help it).

Fortunately for me, there's a double XP week starting July 1st, at which point I will be blasting through levels like a man possessed on as many characters as I can! I feel a sense of urgency because I doubt I'll be leveling again in SWTOR until its next double XP event. And really I'd love to just check the game off my MMO to-do list and uninstall as soon as I've viewed the stories and taken a few screenshots.

What about you, Massively readers? Have you ever come back to a game specifically for the double XP, or am I sailing alone across my own personal ocean of crazy?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

      Make My MMO: June 15 - June 21, 2014

This week in MMO crowdfunding news, golden oldie World War II Online assured itself of a new client update thanks to a successful Indiegogo campaign. The genre's first and arguably best MMOFPS raised over $10,000, which it will spend on a new test server as well as PC and Mac client updates.

Elite: Dangerous developer Frontier made headlines based on the size of its (expanding) dev team, and fellow space sim Star Citizen stirred up some controversy thanks to its hyper-realistic flight model manifesto. Oh, and don't forget to watch that crowdfunded EVE Online documentary when it premieres next month!

The rest of our weekly crowdfunding roundup is hiding on the other side of that hypergate.

EverQuest Next's vampires will not sparkle

        SOE
In the latest EverQuest Next roundtable video, SOE Senior Brand Manager Omeed Dariani and Lead Content Designer Steve Danuser team up to offer a counterpart to the villain vote from earlier in June, when players voted Ambassador D'Vinn into the game. This week, the studio focuses on other iconic franchise characters. While Danuser and Dariani note that all the characters mentioned will be present in the game or at least its lore, some will find themselves in new roles since EverQuest Next is a reboot of the franchise, not a chronological continuation of past storytelling.

Lucan D'Lere, for example, will still be associated with Freeport, but he might make different life choices this time around. But it was the Dark Elf vampire Leone who won the poll because, well, EverQuest players. Danuser promises that the rebooted version of Leone and his friends will not sparkle.

Finally, this is apparently the last edition of these roundtable videos. Future episodes, SOE says, will be rolled into the team's Workshop Show livestreams.

That means the time is right for an online LEGO game, and Funcom's seizing the opportunity. Launching this summer, LEGO Minifigures Online is currently in beta, and in its present state, though missing a good chunk of its final content is already more fun than a barrel of Minifigures.

Mordheim: Closely Following the Tabletop Set

We met with Yves Bordeleau and Vincent Gallopain of Rogue Factor, for a look at some early gameplay footage of their upcoming strategy RPG Mordheim at E3 last week, and the game is looking pretty interesting. Mordheim is based on Games Workshop's tabletop skirmish game of the same name, and the devs have closely followed the tabletop rule set, with a few exceptions, which we will discuss in a moment.
