Adobe Photoshop Express Lands on Windows Phone

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 11:14 AM PDT

Adobe Photoshop ExpressOn the go photo editing

Little by little, the Windows Phone platform is being fleshed out with a bigger and wider variety of apps. For you photography fans, Adobe Photoshop Express is now available for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices as a free download. For casual edits, this means you no longer have to export your photos to your PC for Photoshop-style touchups and the like -- just use your Lumia device instead.

The basics are there, like cropping and being able to straighten, rotate, and flip photos. There's also a red-eye removal option. Beyond that, you can use the one-touch "Auto-Fix" tool in Photoshop Express to correct for brightness, exposure, and shadows.

Other free options include slider controls for exposure, contrast, clarity, vibrance, and more; one-touch filters (over 20 effects to choose from), and easy sharing to sites Facebook and Instagram.

Of course, there are in-app purchases too. You can add a Looks Pack and a Noise Reduction Pack for even more options.

You can download Photoshop Express here.

Origin PC Genesis Overview (Video)

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 10:50 AM PDT

origin pc genesisCheck out video footage of this cool, revolutionary chassis

In this video, Gordon walks you through Origin PC's Genesis. The Genesis features the company's custom designed and modular chassis that lets the builder add a bottom slice with additional radiators or hard drives as well as the capability to mount the motherboard tray in four orientations including reversing the tray and window. It's truly a unique and dare we say it—revolutionary approach to case design. And yes, just like custom systems from other vendors, you can get the case—you just have to buy entire system and gut the parts. The case isn't quite perfect though so Gordon walks you through what works and what doesn't. And no, despite what Gordon seems to imply, you can't actually change the orientation of the motherboard willy nilly. That's done when you order the machine and when it's being built.

Google Wants to Mine Healthcare Data, Claims It Could Save 100,000 Lives in 2015

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 10:42 AM PDT

GoogleData mining fears are costing lives, Google's Larry Page says

Google faces an uphill battle if mining healthcare data is on its agenda. There's already a perception out there that Google knows too much, and when you delve into the highly personal sector of healthcare, it's hard to imagine there being much public support. However, Google's Larry Page says that his company could save as many as 100,000 lives next year by mining healthcare data. If true, might that change your mind?

"For me, I'm so excited about the possibilities to improve things for people, my worry would be the opposite," Page told The New York Times. "We get so worried about these things that we don't get the benefits."

Page laments that regulations make collecting and analyzing healthcare data such a difficult process, even when the data is analyzed anonymously.

"Right now we don't data mine healthcare data. If we did we'd probably save 100,000 lives next year," Page added.

Page's comments came after Google's opening keynote for its I/O developers conference. The Mountain View firm announced a series of products, services, and initiatives, most of which revolved around Android. Google also used the opportunity to introduce Google Fit, a fitness and health tracking platform that will implement sensors on wearable devices.

Asus, Gigabyte Headed for a Photo Finish in Motherboard Shipments

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 09:10 AM PDT

Gigabyte MotherboardTop two motherboard makers fight for pole position

In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter if Asus edges out Gigabyte in motherboard shipments, or if Gigabyte manages to swipe the shipment crown by a hair. However, it's fun to watch these two race to the finish line, which is partly why we keep covering it. The other reason is because both companies want the crown, and that could mean price cuts at some point. So, which company is going to win?

Go ahead and flip a coin. The latest chatter Digitimes is hearing from its sources within the supply chain is that both companies are expected to ship 5.1 million to 5.2 million branded motherboards in the second quarter of 2014. Looking ahead, those same sources say Asus and Gigabyte are likely to ship 6 million more in the third.

At last count, Asus was ahead of Gigabyte by a mere 100,000 units back in the first quarter. Depending on how things shake out, Gigabyte could close the gap by the end of the second or third quarter, and then it would be a fierce race in the fourth.

That could be where the price cuts come in. There's been speculation of an aggressive price war breaking out in the motherboard industry. This would include Asus and Gigabyte, but also smaller players like ASRock and MSI.

Old Timey Video Explains Net Neutrality in 60 Seconds

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 08:13 AM PDT

Net Neutrality VideoShow this video to your friends and family if they ask about net neutrality

Ron Burgundy likes to think of himself as "kind of a big deal," but so is the topic of net neutrality, which we'd like to see him report on once the Anchorman series reaches the Internet era. In the meantime, it's up to us to educate ourselves on the topic, as well as make sure that our less tech savvy friends and family know exactly what's at stake. If you're having trouble explaining net neutrality to one of them, here's a short video that will help.

The embedded video below (which was brought to our attention by Business Insider) takes the core concept of net neutrality and presents a simplified visual using the analogy of cars traveling on a freeway. It begins with various vehicles all traveling down the freeway without obstruction. Some say YouTube and Twitch on the side, while others are unidentified.

Out of nowhere, a guy with a Comcast hat strolls onto the scene and sets up a toll booth. Netflix pays up and is able to race along at full speed, while an unidentified vehicle that refused to pay the toll has an obstruction place on his tire that slows it down considerably.

The video plays into the fact that Netflix recently inked a multi-year agreement with Comcast to make sure its traffic would reach the homes of Comcast subscribers at full speed. Prior to the agreement, Comcast customers frequently complained about frequent buffering, degradation in video quality, and even dropped videos.

In any event, here's the video:

Ask Massively: Misconceptions about game criticism, free-to-play, and lazy scrubs

I like this vision of Anatoli and his rifle protecting our comment section from trolls.
In previous editions of Ask Massively, we've covered misconceptions about new, old, and sunsetted MMOs as well as misconceptions about jerk players, Kickstarters, and untrustworthy studios. Let's tackle a few more this week: who gets to dish out criticism, what F2P portends for a game, and which MMO generation really has the most lazy scrubs (answer: all of them).

ArcheAge bans 16k spam accounts in alpha

Ahh, spammers. They are the mosquitos of the MMO world if mosquitos could email and send global chat messages. Trion is no stranger to spam-squashing and as Community Manager Evan "Scapes" Berman demonstrated in a recent post, the studio is bringing out the big guns against ArcheAge's spammers who have been plaguing the alpha test.

According to the post, over 16,000 spammer and gold farmer accounts have been removed from alpha already, and Patch 1.2 (arriving next week) will have even more tools to fight the "general asshats." Scapes encourages players to keep reporting those illegal accounts and contact support if you discover that your account has been compromised.

The Daily Grind: Is PLEX/APEX/C.R.E.D.D. risky for developers?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Trion announced ArcheAge's APEX system recently, and while I'm sure it has its own wrinkles, my first instinct was to compare it to EVE Online's PLEX. It's a fascinating idea, allowing players with knowledge of an in-game economy to leverage said knowledge into enough currency to buy tradeable items that can be redeemed for subscription time.

It's always struck me as a bit risky, though. We can only guess at the number of EVE fans who play the game for free thanks to PLEX, but I imagine it's a pretty significant slice of the game's old money crowd. And while newer games like ArcheAge and even WildStar are aping the system in some fashion, it's too early to tell what sort of effect APEX and C.R.E.D.D. will have on developers' bottom lines.

What do you think, Massively readers? Do these sorts of systems seem risky to you if you put yourself in a dev's shoes, or do you think the number of players taking advantage of these systems is relatively small?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Ultima Online patch delayed because of Mythic shutdown

      Posted: 26 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

      UO
While last month the Broadsword Online team reassured players of its games that they would not be affected by the shutdown of Mythic Entertainment, Ultima Online Producer Bonnie "Mesanna" Armstrong has admitted today that update 86, originally slated for July, has been delayed until at least mid-August. "The shutdown of the Mythic Studio [...] has caused us to move the rest of our build machines from that office to the office in Herndon before we were expecting," she wrote in her producer's letter today. "So that has caused a delay in our publish time."

But there's also some good news for players of the veteran MMO. Here's some of what Armstrong says the team is currently working on:
      • a new trade quest to acquaint players with the world,
      • new Clean-up-Britannia rewards,
      • a new interface for the enhanced client (helped along by a well-known player modder),
      • a revamp of the Advisor program (what used to be called the Counselor program),
      • revisions to the global loot system,
      • anniversary rewards for the game's 18th birthday in September,
      • and a return-to-UO promotion for former players in August.
Armstrong also notes that the UO team is looking to hire an engineer and site designer.

Xsyon's terrain reversion adds decay, resets land

Notorious Games has released a terrain reversion update for its post-apocalyptic Xsyon sandbox. Xsyon allows players to sculpt terrain and "over the years, many unsightly mounds and ruins of abandoned sites have built up across the land."

The reversion patch "gradually restores this neglected land to its original state," Notorious explains via press release. The update also allows tree stumps and logs to decay over time. Notorious says that the decay will be a constant process in order to provide "expansive areas of pristine terrain" for new players and existing players who want to branch out and build in new or bigger locations.

PlanetSide 2's Hossin update is live but not entirely done

            Posted: 26 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

PlanetSide 2 players are today logging into the Hossin patch, a major update with a new continent with more than 80 new bases in a new biome. The update includes the first phase of the new continent locking mechanic for territory control and perks for guilds -- sorry, outfits -- including new recruiting, decal, and capturing systems.

Creative Director Matt Higby warns, however, that "Hossin is not finished":
If we wanted to "finish" Hossin without sacrificing the quality level we've established, it would probably be 3 months before it was ready to go live - we don't want to wait that long, and we don't think you want to either. [...] Right now about 50% of the bases on Hossin are "done" to the point that we're completely satisfied with the quality of the level design and visuals, about 25% of the bases are first pass [...] and another 25% are [placeholders]. We expect these bases to function correctly, provide all the necessary utilities to make the game work - they're just not 100% up to our standards of level design quality quite yet.
Higby calls this the "Early Expedition" approach and says the teams will continue work on the "beta" continent over the next few months.

Final Fantasy XIV offers a hunting preview

It's like the version of FFXII's system in a game that actually supports it!
Are you ready to go hunting? Final Fantasy XIV is ready to let you. No, you won't get a standard-issue bright orange vest and deer blind, but you will be able to take on a variety of different marks, earn special currency, and possibly eventually pick up a nice orange vest. It could be one of the rewards; you don't know. Players will be tasked with killing a certain number of monsters at varying levels of challenge at both regular and elite difficulties.

Regular marks will differ from player to player, but elite marks will be the same for all players and are refreshed once per week. Slaying elite marks provides allied seals and tomestones, with allied seals used to purchase armor, weapons, minions, alexandrite, and sands/oils of time. The preview also contains a hint of a new moogle delivery quest, which should give players of a more pacifist bent something to do even without hunting down creatures across Eorzea.
