Google Gives Users the Option to Plan for Their Digital Afterlife

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 08:55 PM PDT

Tombstone

It only takes a few minutes, but makes a ton of sense if you're invested in the ecosystem.

When it comes right down to it the modern Internet is really quite young. The term Web 2.0 was coined back in 1999 to help describe websites that had evolved beyond simple static webpages, but most of the web services we have come to know and love are actually less than 10 years old. As we start to pour more of ourselves into the cloud, it's worth asking the question, what happens to our data when we die? I recently had a close personal friend of mine pass away suddenly at the age of 32, and every time I log into Facebook, I can't help but notice his avatar floating off to the right in my chat list, smiling away like nothing ever happened. It left me wondering how Facebook will deal with the ever increasing numbers of users who are no longer with us, and Google to its credit is once again leading the way.

Google's new Inactive Account Manager allows users to specify what will happen to their data after a set period of time, and it is really quite clever. The system has built in safeguards that will send out text messages to verify you are actually no longer among the living, at which point the system will either notify your loved ones with instructions on how to access your account, or delete your data once and for all.

The cynical among us could make the case that Google is simply looking for ways to shave on long term storage costs, but that just sounds awful. We prefer to think Google is just trying to prepare us mentally for our digital afterlife, and giving us a chance to choose how we want our personal data handled after we shuffle off this mortal coil.

Blackberry Claims Analyst Reports Citing Abnormally High Z10 Return Rates Are “Absolutely False”

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 07:42 PM PDT

Z10

Blackberry isn't ready to talk sales numbers just yet, but is fighting back against negative analyst reports.

It has become fashionable over the years to dump on Blackberry, and for once, the company isn't going to let it slide. Late last week analysts from Detweiler Fenton and ITG released reports citing poor sales of Blackberry's new Z10 flagship handset, and one even went so far as to insinuate that returns are outstripping sales in several markets. Rumors like that tend to mess with stock prices, so the company wants to set the record straight.

Blackberry has stated in no uncertain terms that these allegations are "absolutely false", and that so far sales of the device and return rates are well within expectations. Words are cheap, and the handset maker has gone one step further by asking the Ontario Securities Commission to formally review the claims made by Detweiler Fenton. So far the analyst in question is sticking by his report, so only time will tell.

"These materially false and misleading comments about device return rates in the United States harm BlackBerry and our shareholders, and we call upon the appropriate authorities in Canada and the United States to conduct an immediate investigation," BlackBerry Chief Legal Officer Steve Zipperstein remarked in a statement. "Return rate statistics show that we are at or below our forecasts and right in line with the industry," BlackBerry Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins added.

Being a publically traded company means we won't have to wait long to get the real story here, so it sounds like we should just wait for the official numbers before we pass judgment.

Diamond Releases New USB Powered External Display Adapters

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 07:03 PM PDT

AMD 45nm Quad Core Wafer

Need to drive six displays off one notebook?

Desktop machines typically come with two or more display outputs right out of the box, but as the world becomes increasingly mobile, finding a way to plug in your extra display's when using a notebook has always been a challenge. Sometime even if you're fortunate enough to have a laptop with more than one output, they don't all work at once. Thankfully Diamond has been hard at work on the problem, and late last week they let us know that their new lineup of USB powered display adapters are ready to ship.

Diamond claims the BVU165 and BVU165LT consume 80% less power than internal graphics, support both Mac and PC's, and allow you to drive up to six external displays at resolutions of up to 2048x1152. These dongles are fairly compact, powered by any USB 2.0 port, and come ready to connect to any DVI, HDMI, or VGA capable display. We haven't had a chance to bring these in for testing just yet, but if you're on the hunt for a notebook multi-monitor solution the price seems pretty reasonable.

BVU165 – DVI, HDMI, VGA: $49.99 Each

BVU165LT – DVI Only: $39.99

Rise and Shiny: Dino Storm

I have a real love for finding tiny, unknown, indie titles -- especially ones that are obviously made for younger gamers -- and playing them for a write-up. It's one of the perks of the job; I get to dig up these gems and tell thousands of people about them. Games like Dino Storm also serve to remind me about why I got into blogging about games before I was ever paid to do it. There are virtual worlds to discover out there, and I find that thrilling. I especially like it when they boast this level of quality.

Dino Storm might not challenge a more mature player, but it's surprisingly complex. It's got everything it needs to be considered a full-fledged MMO, but it also keeps in mind that younger players need a little help along the way. You'll play the role of a cowboy or girl who rides around on the backs of well-animated dinosaurs ranging from tiny to massive, and you'll also hunt after all sorts of quests and goods.

I did have a few small issues with the game, but the development team seemed willing and ready to patch them up.

    One Shots Soggy beginnings
Dungeons and Dragons Online newcomers and veterans alike are quite familiar with the waterlogged Sahuagin and all of their wacky antics. Basically think "level 1 mermaids from hell" and you're right with the rest of us. It's a good thing that the game doesn't have smell-o-vision because the tutorial would be reeking of a fishery, that's all I'm saying.

Reader Sharvis photographed his initial journey through the game and delivered this familiar image of an odd cellar. "Oh great, the Wavecrest Tavern's basement has flooded," he writes. "And who let the Sahuagin in? They're making everything look tacky again!"

We'll get the sump pump working while you check out the rest of today's player-submitted screenshots!

Want an early look at the first 20 minutes of The Elder Scrolls Online? Get it while you can after the cut, as a lengthy snippet of leaked gameplay footage has made its way onto YouTube.

The clip shows off character creation, nine playable races, and a choice between three classes (Dragonknight, Sorcerer, and Templar). You can also see the UI, skill trees, and various quests at different points in the video. There's plenty of combat on display, too, both third- and first-person.

The Daily Grind: How do you feel about gear modding?

The Daily Grind How do you feel about gear modding
WildStar's recent dev diary explaining its gear modding system made me realize how we're seeing more and more of this sort of thing recently. Defiance allows you to trick out its guns, RIFT introduced a new type of moddable gear in Storm Legion, SWTOR has custom gear that does the trick, Allods Online just added a similar system, and so on.

I generally like gear modding as long as it doesn't stray too far into the realm of the obtuse and complex. It's fun to tweak that sword or pulse rifle to become the weapon you've always wanted, and there's a thrifty aspect to keeping that good-looking piece of armor up-to-date instead of just pitching it for the latest and greatest.

How do you feel about gear modding? Should it be a staple of all MMOs? How can it be done wrong and how can it be done oh-so-right?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The lure of Sirens Grotto highlighted in EverQuest II video
Earlier this week we got to peek into Cobalt Scar, the new area in EverQuest II's upcoming GU66 Scars of the Awakened. But there's so much more to the zone than just one little fly-through could show! During SOE's latest webcast, the focus turned to one little corner of the new region: the Sirens Grotto dungeon. Complete with waterfalls, coral formations, and alluring sirens begging for help, the dungeon eschews mundane and dingy areas filled with hideous creatures.

Sirens Grotto has heroic and advanced versions, both of which play into the daily missions. Players will have multiple reasons to explore this dungeon, from deciphering what's going on with the Ages End prophecy to finding clues about the missing Kelethin contingent of the New Combine army. Watch the full video below to hear devs describe the zone and share more details about the mobs, quests, and stories that folks will encounter come April 30th.

Undead Labs' zombie actioner State of Decay is coming to Xbox Live this June according to a brief update posted by Undead community guru Sanya Weathers. And when we say brief, we do mean brief, as the sum total of the update is "June. Officially."

Fortunately the firm also released a new teaser that shows off a heaping helping of bloody, brain-bashing gameplay. You'll find it after the cut.

The Tattered Notebook: Can EQ Next's housing measure up to EverQuest II's?

Tattered Notebook Can EQ Next housing measure up to EQII
With last Wednesday's release of EverQuest II's latest prestige home, the totally awesome Hua Mein Retreat, I couldn't help but be focused on one of my favorite gaming features. I toured the new home, got to check out the break-out spots, and marveled at how pro SOE is with housing. Sure, there have been some misses when it comes to the prestige options, but things just keep getting better. Before long, my thoughts turned to the idea of housing in EverQuest Next.

Obviously, I am excited to play EverQuest Next. How could I not be? This studio has cornered the market on the most fun classes I have ever played (Dancer, Disciple, Fury, and Shaman) and the best housing systems I've personally had the pleasure to delve into (Star Wars Galaxies, Vanguard, and EverQuest II). And now it's making another sandbox.

But will EQN pull me permanently away from EQII, a game where I've earned my seven-year vet rewards? That, my friends, will depend in large part on the housing.

EVE Online executive producer moving to concentrate on mobile

It looks like EVE Online's Jon Lander, otherwise known as CCP Unifex, will be moving on from his position as executive producer of the 10-year-old single-shard space MMO to concentrate on CCP's "emerging mobile strategy," according to a recent dev blog. Lander helped steer the team through EVE Online expansions Crucible, Inferno, Retribution, and the upcoming Odyssey. Don't worry, though; Senior Producer CCP Seagull and Development Director CCP Ripley will continue on with production of the game. Odyssey's release is still set for June 4th, and CCP promises that the transition will have zero impact on the quality of the upcoming new expansion.

Even more intriguingly, CCP wants to fill the position that Jon vacated with a candidate from outside the company. The dev blog wonders whether you have what it takes to take on the massive responsibility of running the world's biggest collection of pew-pews, or maybe you know someone who does. Good luck!

The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XIV's magitek disassembled

Because I will always discuss giant robots. Always.
I've done a couple of articles on reoccurring concepts in Final Fantasy games before, but this is an unusual one because it seems to barely qualify at times. Final Fantasy XIV has magitek, as did Final Fantasy VI, but those are the only games to refer to it as such. Sure, other games flirt with similar concepts (Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII, and Final Fantasy VII most prominently), but none of them is outright called magitek.

Bit there's still some interesting stuff to unpack when it comes to magitek, even if you don't consider the corner cases as you ought to. At a glance it might look like this is a simple manichean split between two factions, but there's a lot more going on and a lot of importance tied up with the term that can hint as to Final Fantasy XIV's future -- beyond the fact that we'll get to ride some magitek armor.

Jagex reports student to police following school shooting threat

The lesson of this story should be so obvious you don't need to be taught it.
For all the talk about video games causing crimes, we don't often hear about the times when they may well prevent them. Thomas Frongillo, age 18, has been arrested on charges of threatening to commit a crime after making statements about shooting up the college that he attended, but the threats were not made in person. They were made in an online game run by Jagex, most likely RuneScape, which is what led to his arrest.

Frongillo allegedly said, "I'm going to shoot up my school tomorrow," and indicated a knowledge of firearms to other players in the game. He also made anti-Semitic comments and had indicated shooting at small wildlife in previous chat sessions. Jagex employees notified the police, and he is currently on bail pending his court date on April 19th. Frongillo's lawyers claim that the statements were made in jest and that the young man had no intention of carrying out any acts of violence.

Credits to a 12-year-old Jose Darwin Garciano who warned his friends not to play with it as the grenades can explode and kill them, just like how it happens in Counter-Strike.
