39 People Found Dead in a Truck in the U.K. Are Believed to be Chinese Nationals

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 05:09 AM PDT

Police in the U.K. said Thursday that the 39 people found dead in a refrigerated truck container are believed to be Chinese nationals.

The bodies were found in the container in the early hours of Wednesday morning, in an industrial park in Essex, east of London, after a local ambulance service alerted police. Police said the front tractor unit of the truck had arrived in the U.K. from Dublin at the weekend, and collected the trailer, which had travelled from Zeebrugge in Belgium, at the port of Purfleet on the River Thames.

Police confirmed Thursday that eight of the victims are women and 31 are men. 38 of the people are believed to be adults, and one is a young adult woman.

A 25-year-old truck driver from Northern Ireland was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody, as police start the largest murder investigation in the U.K. since the 7/7 bombings in London in 2005. Police officers have searched three properties in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, in connection with the investigation. According to the BBC, Britain’s National Crime Agency said it was working to identify “organized crime groups who may have played a part.”

Belgium’s Public Prosecutor’s Office also announced Thursday that they would be opening an investigation into the case, co-operation with Britain’s police and judicial authorities. The tragic case comes as incidents of people smuggling in Belgium have increased in recent years, following the closure of the migrant camp at Dunkirk in March 2017. A National Crime Agency report earlier this year noted an “increasing use of higher-risk methods of clandestine entry,” referring to the method of refrigerated heavy goods vehicles from France and Belgium.

Postcard From Germany: Moved For School, Stayed For Insulin

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 05:00 AM PDT

Every now and then, Katie West considers returning to the U.S. She moved to Germany for graduate school three years ago and now works as a health systems researcher in Hamburg. Her family is an ocean away. Then she remembers why she stays.

West, 30, has had type 1 diabetes since she was three years old. Back in Seattle, where she used to live, she typically paid $70 per month for insulin and another $130 for pump supplies. That was a relative steal in the U.S., made possible by her excellent health insurance, which she got through her employer. But still, it was a financial strain.

In Germany, she pays about €10, roughly $11. Every three months.

“I don’t ever have to worry,” she says. “There is not a day I ever have to worry about if I can pay for something, or manage something.”

The price of insulin has increased globally in recent years, but no wealthy country has felt the impact as acutely as the U.S., where the cost has more than doubled since 2012, going from on average $344 per prescription that year to $666 in 2016, according to the Health Care Cost Institute, and continually climbing since. Germany is one of many Western nations, including England and Canada, which empower their governments to actively negotiate prescription drug prices, in turn holding consumer costs in check. The U.S. has no such system in place, and last year some 13.2% of the 2.9 million people who took insulin in the country did not take it as prescribed, and 24.4% asked their doctor for a lower-cost medication, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

West, like 90% of German residents, is on one of the country’s many public insurance plans, which are administered through non-profit insurance companies. She pays for that benefit: maybe a third of her paycheck is withheld each month for taxes, health care and other social services. But in exchange, the coverage—including that of prescription drugs—is generous.

Germany has an easier time financing prescription coverage because these drugs cost less there. When a new drug comes to the German market, an independent panel assesses its effectiveness and whether its treatment value is commensurate with the manufacturer’s proposed price. Drugs serving a similar purpose or delivering the same benefit get grouped together. The panel sets a maximum price that insurers will pay for these medications―a practice known as “reference pricing.” Since most German residents are on public health insurance plans, and these plans are tightly regulated, there aren’t many ways for insurance providers to compete with one another. One option they do have, however, is to negotiate lower prices on prescription meds with drug manufacturers.

German law requires public plans to cap out-of-pocket health care costs, and to cover all medically necessary treatment, including insulin. For people with chronic conditions—like West—the out-of-pocket limit is set at 1% of household income. For those without such a condition, out-of-pocket costs are capped at 2%. After you hit the limit, the plan pays the rest; that’s why West’s insulin costs are so low. In fact, German diabetes patients have some of the lowest out-of-pocket costs in the world for insulin, according to T1 International, an advocacy group for people with type 1 diabetes.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., the climbing price of insulin has lit up both Capitol Hill and the 2020 presidential campaign trail, especially as voters call high-out-pocket costs their biggest health care concern, according to a June 2019 Kaiser Family Foundation poll. A February KFF poll from the same year shows that almost two-thirds of Americans queried support more government regulation of drug pricing. Lawmakers in D.C. have proposed legislation to that effect, like the bipartisan “Insulin Price Reduction Act,” which specifically targets the diabetes drug, and the “Affordable Drug Manufacturing Act,” proposed by Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, which includes regulating insulin pricing as one of a series of broader proposals. Legislators have also hauled in insulin manufacturers for congressional questioning, but these efforts have foundered in the face of congressional legislative inertia, partisan in-fighting over the best path forward, and intense pharmaceutical-industry lobbying.

Ken Inchausti, a Novo Nordisk spokesman, says a reference-pricing approach like Germany’s is incompatible with the American market. Instead of tackling drug prices, he says, policymakers should look at how insurance plans pay for insulin. A White House proposal first floated last fall to tie Medicare payments for some drugs to prices paid in European countries―including Germany―would do just that, at least for the public sector. But that plan, which aligns with ideas put forth by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has elicited vocal pushback from the pharmaceutical industry and other conservative groups, which have blanketed D.C. in critical advertisements. Powerful Senate Republicans have come out against the proposal, including Senate Finance Chair Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who argued this summer that it would hamper innovation.

Germany’s system isn’t perfect. West says she now pays more for basic over-the-counter medicines than for insulin. She asks her family to bring her ibuprofen when they visit, for example, because the price she would pay in Germany is roughly double the cost of the over-the-counter drug in the U.S. But West is still happier in Germany. “Why would I go back? It’s thousands of dollars a year I’m going to have to spend on the same [insulin] I get here for nothing.” The peace of mind alone makes it worth it. “A third of my income may go to taxes and health care here, but honestly, that’s fine. Take it. Take it!” she says. “I don’t have to worry.”

Italy’s Female Soccer Stars Are Fighting to Change the Law That Limits Their Pay to $33,000

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 02:36 AM PDT

(ROME) — Italy’s surprise run to the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup this year went a long way toward changing misconceptions about the female game in a country where the most popular sport is dominated by men.

Out of a population of 60 million, more than 20 million spectators watched Italy’s five matches on RAI state TV, setting audience records for women’s soccer game after game.

Nearly all of the big men’s clubs — Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Roma — have recently developed teams to play in the growing Serie A women’s league — with games shown live on Sky Italia every weekend.

A record crowd of nearly 40,000 fans showed up in Turin last March to watch Juventus play Fiorentina — the club that was at the forefront of the female game domestically.

Yet one major aspect of women’s soccer has not changed in Italy. Female players are still considered amateurs by Italian law and therefore are not permitted to earn more than 30,000 euros ($33,000) per year before taxes.

“The difference is there and we all know it,” Juventus forward Barbara Bonansea said this week when Italy’s squad was awarded the Foreign Press Association’s Invictus award for promoting and “emancipating” the female game in the country.

“Before discussing earnings I would talk about our rights. I don’t play because I want to earn as much as the men, also because that would not make sense, they earn so much I can’t even wrap my mind around it. We just want what we deserve. That’s what we’re fighting for,” added Bonansea, who is nearing an economics degree at the University of Turin. “If there’s more coverage of our games and more sponsors come in, then we deserve more, too.”

The Italian soccer federation and Vincenzo Spadafora, Italy’s new Minister for Sport and Youth Policies, both support changing the 1981 law and making the women’s league professional.

Still, new legislation remains a long way off.

“It’s the minimum they deserve,” Italian national team coach Milena Bertolini said. “We have an antiquated law. It’s shameful. If we want to be a modern, democratic and open society . we need to be treated with dignity.”

There’s a similar situation in Spain, where players in the women’s league decided to go on strike Wednesday after failing to reach a deal with clubs over working hours and minimum wages. Also, the U.S. women’s team sued its federation in March — three months before winning the World Cup — alleging gender and pay discrimination.

Bonansea’s two-goal performance in Italy’s 2-1 comeback win over Australia got the ball rolling for the Azzurre at their first World Cup in two decades. She discussed the “pyschological violence” that she and other players faced growing up in a country where girls were not expected — or even allowed — to play soccer.

Bonansea began playing on her brother’s team and didn’t join a girls’ squad until she was 13.

The 53-year-old Bertolini had to dress up as a boy to play as a kid.

“When I was 9 or 10 I had short hair and my teammates didn’t even know whether I was a boy or a girl. So I played and everyone called me ‘Mario’ and nobody noticed,” Bertolini said. “This caused a lot of (pain) which I had to bear for a long time.”

Sexism remains embedded in the Italian game’s terminology with coaches referred to as “Mister” — a term left over from when the English introduced soccer to Italy at the end of the 19th century.

“I call (Bertolini) Mister,” Bonansea said. “It’s just a matter of habit. But we can change it.”

The word “uomo” — man — is used to announce when an opposing player is coming up from behind and in “marcatura a uomo” — man-to-man defense.

“The terminology we use on the field is copied completely from male soccer. Our soccer is still in its early stages but I think it’s important that this should change,” Bertolini said. “The word used most on the field is ‘uomo.’ And I don’t like that.”

But the women’s players are changing perceptions in other ways.

Bonansea is the face of a Nike campaign aimed at young girls in Italy while Juventus and national team captain Sara Gama — the daughter of an Italian mother and a Congolese father — had a Barbie doll modeled after her.

Last week, national team defender Elena Linari became the first prominent Italian soccer player — male or female — to publicly come out as gay.

“Here in Madrid I don’t have any problems,” said Linari, who plays for Atlético Madrid. “Whereas in Italy, I’m afraid to discuss the subject because I don’t know what the reaction might be.

“My grandmother’s reaction was touching. She was happy for me but she was crying when she said she was afraid for me because we’re not protected,” Linari added to RAI.

Bertolini applauded Linari’s announcement, noting the prejudice toward homosexuals in Italy.

“Kids are afraid to express themselves,” Bertolini said. “She was very courageous and now let’s hope announcements like these help change the mentality here.”

Making the women professionals would be a big improvement, too.

U.K. Police Make Raids in Northern Ireland in Connection With 39 Found Dead in Truck

Posted: 24 Oct 2019 01:52 AM PDT

(LONDON) — Police raided two sites in Northern Ireland and questioned a truck driver as officers investigate the death of 39 people found in a container at an industrial park in southeastern England.

The truck and the trailer with the people inside apparently took separate circuitous journeys before ending up on the grounds of the Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of London on the River Thames.

British police said they believe the container went from the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium to Purfleet, England, where it arrived early Wednesday.

A National Crime Agency assessment report on serious and organized crime last year said there was a “greater focus” on rising smuggler numbers in Belgium after the closure of the Dunkirk migrant camp in 2017.

Iran Executed 7 Children Last Year, U.N. Human Rights Expert Says

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 07:01 PM PDT

(UNITED NATIONS) — Iran executed seven child offenders last year and two so far this year even though human rights law prohibits the death penalty for anyone under age 18, a U.N. independent human rights expert said Wednesday.

Javaid Rehman also told the U.N. General Assembly’s human rights committee that he has “credible information” there are at least 90 child offenders currently on death row in Iran.

Rehman, the U.N. special investigator on human rights in Iran, expressed deep concern at the overall use of the death penalty in the Islamic Republic, saying its execution rate “remains one of the highest in the world” even after a drop from 507 in 2017 to 253 in 2018. So far in 2019, he said, “conservative estimates indicate that at least 173 executions have been carried out.”

He welcomed an amendment to an Iranian anti-narcotics law in 2017 that led to the reduction in executions in 2018 but said “there is more work to be done.” He also said he was encouraged by the “enhanced dialogue” between Iranian authorities and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights “on the administration of justice and child offender executions.”

As for the overall human rights situation in Iran over the last year, Rehman cited a number of “distressing factors,” including a declining economic situation that he said was “worsened by the impact of sanctions, with serious consequences for the realization of economic and social rights.”

The United States has been ratcheting up sanctions on Iran since President Donald Trump withdrew last year from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The U.S. administration contends Iran is not complying with the accord amid new questions about its activities raised by the U.N. atomic watchdog and is urging other countries to also step up pressure on Tehran.

Against that economic backdrop, Rehman said, those calling for respect of human rights “have been intimidated, harassed, arrested and detained.”

“Between September 2018 and July 2019, at least eight prominent lawyers were arrested for defending political prisoners and human rights defenders, many of whom have received lengthy sentences,” he said.

In addition, he said, protesters calling for better protection of labor rights at the Haft Tappeh sugar mill have been arrested on national security-related charges, including seven individuals recently sentenced to between six and 19 years in prison, though the head of the judiciary ordered a review of the sentences.

Rehman, a British-Pakistani professor of Islamic law, said journalists reporting on the Haft Tappeh protest and other labor rights issues have also been arrested and detained.

At least 32 people have been arrested since January 2018 for protesting compulsory veiling laws, the majority of them women who in many cases have faced harsher sentences than their male counterparts, he said. He said cultural workers and artists are “reportedly being subjected to arrest and detention for their work.”

Rehman said ethnic and religious minorities are disproportionately represented in Iran’s executions on national security-related charges and among its political prisoners.

“They are subject to arbitrary arrests and detention for their participation in a range of peaceful activities such as advocacy for the use of minority languages, for organizing or taking part in peaceful protests, and for affiliation with opposition parties,” he said.

Only three religious minorities are recognized in Iran’s constitution — Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians, Rehman said. He urged that the constitution be amended to allow all religious minorities and those who don’t hold any religious beliefs “to fully enjoy their rights.”

India Is Slowly Easing Its Lockdown in Kashmir. But Life Isn’t Returning to Normal

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:14 AM PDT

It’s apple season in Kashmir, but in orchards across the fertile Himalayan valley, unpicked fruit rots on the branches. Markets lack their usual bustle, most shops are open for only a few hours each morning, and schools and colleges are largely empty of students.

The slowdown reflects both the firm grip of the Indian government on the Muslim-majority state, and the seemingly spontaneous reaction of the Kashmiri people to it. A tweet posted on the account of Mehbooba Mufti, the state’s former Chief Minister who has been detained for more than two months, read: “Kashmiris have been resolute about a civil curfew as a mark of protest.”

It was Aug. 5 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government said it would scrap the semi-autonomous status that the state of Jammu and Kashmir had held under India’s constitution for seven decades. For the next 72 days, the Kashmir Valley and parts of Jammu endured a communications blackout, with landlines, cell phones and the Internet suspended. “Nine to 10 million people were pushed behind an iron wall. We’d never seen anything like this,” says Anuradha Bhasin, the executive editor of the Kashmir Times, citing previous Internet blackouts that still left phone services intact. “There was an absolute silence.” Already one of the world’s most militarized regions, the Valley was flooded with tens of thousands of Indian troops.

If the heavy-handed measures of the curfew were intended to dampen the threat of violence, they succeeded—at least for a time. But now that India has begun lifting restrictions on the Valley, Kashmiris are bracing themselves for what happens once the clampdown is over. In a Sept. 29 column, former Indian Supreme Court Judge Markandey Katju wrote that Kashmir would become India’s Vietnam War, a nightmare with “body bags” returning in large numbers. “Remove the restrictions, and popular protests will engulf the whole Valley. Continue them, and the pot will boil until it explodes.”

The problems in Kashmir have been shaped by colonial history, religious tensions and nationalism. During the Partition of British India in 1947, the leader of Jammu and Kashmir pushed for independence rather than choosing to join Muslim-majority Pakistan or Hindu-majority India. When Pakistan tried to take the territory anyway, Kashmir’s leader asked for help from India, which agreed—on the condition that Kashmir accede to India. What followed was the first of two wars that Pakistan and Hindu-majority India fought over Kashmir. Today, both of the nuclear-armed countries claim the state as a whole; India controls roughly half the land, Pakistan controls less than a third and China the rest.

In the past three decades, Pakistan has also partially backed and funded insurgents in Kashmir, where the Indian government has responded with troops and often brutal tactics. A U.N. report in July raised concerns about serious abuses by Indian forces, including extrajudicial killings, torture and pellet-gun blindings. New Delhi dismissed the report as a “false and motivated narrative.”

Repealing Article 370 of the Indian constitution—which gave Kashmir autonomy in all areas except foreign affairs, defense and communications-—was a long-standing goal of Modi’s party, which sees India as a Hindu nation and long opposed rules preventing outsiders from buying land in Kashmir. Stripping the special status has seemed to rouse the party base. “For 70 years, Article 370 was proving to be an impediment in the way of the spirit of ‘one country, one constitution,’” Modi said to cheers during a rally in Maharashtra ahead of local Oct. 21 elections.

To Pakistan, the situation looks rather different. “The red line has been crossed on Aug. 5,” says Masood Khan, president of Azad (Free) Kashmir, one of two territories in Kashmir administered by Pakistan. A career diplomat who worked in Washington and Geneva as part of Pakistan’s permanent mission to the U.N., Khan grew up in Azad Kashmir and describes himself as a “son of the soil.” On a recent trip to Washington D.C., he urged the international community to intervene and start talks with India. “We’re in a state of war,” he told TIME.

But while the rhetoric on both sides remains hostile, Pakistan can ill afford a full-scale conflict, analysts say. On Oct. 18, the Financial Action Task Force, the global terrorism finance watchdog, ruled Pakistan would stay on its “greylist”until February 2020 as it was doing too little to tackle its funding of violent extremism. Pakistan was also bailed out by the IMF this summer for the 13th time in 30 years, inflation is predicted to surge, and the World Bank recently cut its economic growth forecast. “There’s a realization that without an economy, Pakistan is not going to have a military,” says Gareth Price, senior research fellow at the London think tank Chatham House.

A greater security risk seems to be the anger and resentment simmering within the Valley. Nearly 4,000 people, including politicians, activists, journalists, have been arrested, according to a Sept. 6 government report seen by Reuters, and thousands remain in custody. On Sept. 24, the National Federation of Indian Women highlighted claims that 13,000 boys had been picked up and detained, some for up to 45 days. “These incidents instill a fear that goes very deep,” Bhasin says. “Kashmir is not a monolith; there will be a creative response, a peaceful response—and a violent response.”

A rise in homegrown terrorism in the Valley now seems almost inevitable, Khan suggests. “There’s lots of anger there. It is sharp and fierce,” he says. “But when people are defending their homes against Indian attacks, we don’t call it militancy. We would call them freedom fighters.”

Violence has already risen as India dismantles the “iron wall” in Kashmir. Cell phone services were restored on Oct. 14 (the Internet is still restricted), but peaceful protesters are still being arrested. On Oct. 16, five were killed: two civilians in attacks by suspected militants, and three alleged rebels, by Indian forces. Four days later, shelling on both sides of the boundary between India-adminstered Kashmir and Pakistan-administered Kashmir led to the deaths of at least nine soldiers and civilians.

Atul Loke—The New York Times/ReduxGh Mohiuddin Mir, 65, who worries that if the Kashmir crisis is not resolved by harvest time he will be financially devastated, at his apple farm in Budgam, India, on Sept. 19, 2019.

The repeal of Article 370 “opens the door to rejuvenate a moribund economy,” the Indian ambassador to the U.S. wrote in a September New York Times column. But the clampdown has hit hard; the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry estimates it shutdown has already cost the region over $1.4 billion. Although tourists are now allowed in, the precarious security situation means the tourism and handicrafts sectors are unlikely to bounce back fast. Classes have not resumed at many schools and colleges. “We are helpless. I want to teach, but I can’t teach,” says a 46-year-old professor, who asked for anonymity out of safety concerns. “For some, it feels criminal to go to school and study because there’s so much anger and resentment.”

For journalists, the shutdown was particularly difficult. “We were forced to work in ways that took us back 50 years; we were working like stenographers,” Bhasin says. “The government set up a media facilitation center that was open for a few hours a day. There was one mobile phone and three computers available for over 100 journalists to operate.” Bhasin filed a petition to the Supreme Court on Aug. 10 to immediately relax the “virtual blackout” on communications and to ease the restrictions of the free movement of journalists. “The case is still pending,” she tells TIME more than 10 weeks later, “It has been bumped from one hearing to another. This was an issue that required immediate attention.”

And Kashmir’s $1.5 billion apple trade, which employs more than 3 million people, suffered during the blackout, which cut traders off from buyers. Now, militants are targeting apple sellers, pickers and drivers; within three days in October, two people were shot and another injured in two separate insurgent attacks on the apple trade.

Yet the violence in the Valley hardly represents a significant escalation, says Ajai Sahni, executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi. “Kashmir has been a theater of terrorism for over 30 years, and the idea that the government’s recent moves were going to bring violence to an abrupt and sustainable end was visibly absurd,” he says. Ultimately a long-term political solution is needed, he adds, one that allows the Kashmiri people to address their grievances.

On Oct. 11, the state government took out a full-page ad on the front page of the newspaper, Greater Kashmir. “CLOSED SHOPS, NO PUBLIC TRANSPORT? WHO BENEFITS? Are we going to succumb to militants? Think!!!” it pleaded. But most Kashmiris are not returning to business as usual, either too afraid of violence or determined to disobey New Delhi. “There’s a collective sense of fear, humiliation, hurt and anger,” Bhasin says. “The natural fallout is that this will erupt in different forms. The only question is when.”

Trump Says Turkey Will Make Ceasefire in Syria Permanent

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:04 AM PDT

(WASHINGTON) –– President Donald Trump said Wednesday he will lift sanctions on Turkey after the NATO ally agreed to permanently stop fighting Kurdish forces in Syria and he defended his decision to withdraw American troops, saying the U.S. should not be the world’s policeman.

“We’re getting out,” Trump said at the White House, asserting that tens of thousands of Kurdish lives were saved as the result of his actions.

“Let someone else fight over this long, blood-stained sand,” he said.

Trump warned that if Turkey does not honor its pledge for a permanent cease-fire, he will not hesitate to reimpose sanctions. Earlier this month, Trump halted negotiations on a $100 billion trade deal with Turkey, raised steel tariffs back up to 50% and imposed sanctions on three senior Turkish officials and Turkey’s defense and energy ministries.

“The job of our military is not to police the world,” Trump said. “Other nations must step up and do their fair share. Today’s breakthrough is a critical step in that direction.”

Trump earlier in October ordered the bulk of the approximately 1,000 U.S. troops in Syria to withdraw after Turkey’s president, Recep Tayipp Erdogan, told Trump in a phone call that Turkish forces were set to invade northeastern Syria. Turkey’s goal was to push back the U.S.-allied Kurdish fighters. Turkey views the Kurds as terrorists and an ever-present threat along its southern border with Syria.

The U.S. pullout was seen as an abandonment of Kurdish fighters, who have incurred thousands of casualties as they fought with U.S. forces against the Islamic State militants.

The U.S. troops left, but the conflict was not without repercussions.

Trump’s critics say he gave up American influence in the region and signaled to future allies that the United States is no longer a reliable partner. More than 176,000 people have been displaced by the Turkish offensive and about 500 IS fighters gained freedom during the conflict.

“There were a few that got out, a small number relatively speaking,” Trump said. “They’ve been largely recaptured.”

Turkey is taking control of areas of Syria that it captured in its invasion. Russian and Syrian forces are now overseeing the rest of the border region, leaving the United States with little influence in the region.

Trump said he would “bring our soldiers home” from Syria, but then recalibrated and his administration plans to shift more than 700 to western Iraq. Those troops, however, do not have permission to stay in Iraq permanently. Iraq’s defense minister, Najah al-Shammari, told The Associated Press that the U.S. troops will leave the country within four weeks.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper visited the Iraqi capital on Wednesday, a day after Russia and Turkey reached an agreement that would send their forces along nearly the entire northeastern border to fill the void left when U.S. forces left. Between 200 and 300 U.S. troops will remain at the southern Syrian outpost of Al-Tanf.

Under the new agreement, much of that territory would be handed over to U.S. rivals.

The biggest winners are Turkey and Russia. Turkey would get sole control over areas of the Syrian border captured in its invasion. Turkish, Russian and Syrian government forces would oversee the rest of the border region. America’s former U.S. allies, the Kurdish fighters, are hoping Russia and Syria will preserve some pieces of the Syrian Kurdish autonomy in the region.

Russian Forces Deploy at Syrian Border, Threaten Kurdish Fighters With Being ‘Streamrolled’ by Turkey

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 07:37 AM PDT

(AKCAKALE, Turkey) — Russian military police began patrols on part of the Syrian border Wednesday, quickly moving to implement an accord with Turkey that divvies up control of northeastern Syria. The Kremlin told Kurdish fighters to pull back from the entire frontier or else face being “steamrolled” by Turkish forces.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan echoed those warnings, saying his military would resume its offensive against Kurdish fighters if the new arrangements are not carried out.

Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin reached an agreement Tuesday that would transform the map of northeast Syria, installing their forces along the border and filling the void left by the abrupt withdrawal of American troops. The Kurdish fighters, who once relied on the U.S. forces as protection from Turkey, were given a deadline of next Tuesday evening to pull back from border areas they have not already left.

Iraq, meanwhile, closed the door on the U.S. military’s attempt to keep the troops leaving Syria on its soil. Iraqi Defense Minister Najah al-Shammari told The Associated Press that those troops were only “transiting” Iraq and would leave within four weeks, heading either to Kuwait, Qatar or the United States.

Al-Shammari spoke after meeting U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who earlier this week had said the American forces from Syria would remain in Iraq to fight the Islamic State group. Iraqi’s military quickly said they did not have permission to do so.

The clumsy reversal underscored the blow to U.S. influence on the ground in the wake of President Donald Trump’s order for U.S. troops to leave Syria. Those forces were allied to the Kurdish-led fighters for five years in the long and bloody campaign that brought down the Islamic State group in Syria.

Now a significant swath of the territory they captured is being handed over to U.S. rivals, and the Kurds have been stung at being abandoned by their allies to face the Turkish invasion launched on Oct. 9.

The Kremlin pointedly referred to that abandonment as it told the Kurds to abide by the Russian-Turkish accord. “The United States was the closest ally of the Kurds during the last few years, and in the end the U.S. ditched the Kurds and effectively betrayed them,” leaving them to fight the Turks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to Russian newswires.

“It’s quite obvious that if the Kurdish units don’t withdraw with their weapons then Syrian border guards and Russian military police will have to step back. And the remaining Kurdish units will be steamrolled by the Turkish army,” he said.

Turkey considers the Kurdish fighters terrorists because of their links to Kurdish insurgents in Turkey. It has demanded they retreat from the entire border region, creating a “safe zone” where Turkey could also settle some of the 3.6 million Syrian refugees on its soil.

Ankara would gain that goal under the new accord with Moscow along with the agreement last week with the U.S. that put a cease-fire in place.

Kurdish forces completed withdrawing on Tuesday from a stretch of territory 120 kilometers (75 miles) wide along the border and 30 kilometers (19 miles) deep between the towns of Ras al-Ayn and Tal Abyad. That pullback, allowing Turkish-backed forces to take over, was required under the U.S.-Turkish accord.

Delil Souleiman—AFP/Getty ImagesSyrian Kurdish and Arab families are pictured fleeing in the countryside of the town of Darbasiyah, on the border between Syria and Turkey, towards the town of Hassakeh on Oct.22, 2019.

The new agreement with Russia allows Turkey to keep sole control over that area. For the rest of the northeastern border, Russian and Syrian government forces will move in to ensure the Kurdish fighters leave. Then after the deadline runs out Tuesday, Turkish and Russian forces will jointly patrol a strip 10-kilometers (6 miles) deep along the border.

The Russian Defense Ministry said a convoy of military police had crossed the Euphrates River and deployed in the Syrian border town of Kobane. “The military police will help protect the population, maintain order, patrol the designated areas and assist in the withdrawal of Kurdish units and their weapons 30 kilometers away from the border,” it said.

The Turkish military said it would not resume its offensive “at this stage” after the U.S.-brokered cease-fire expired Tuesday night. However, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusolgu said that Turkish forces would “neutralize” any Syrian Kurdish fighters they come across in areas that Turkey now controls.

President Erdogan said the attack would start again if the Kurdish pullback does not take place. “Whether its our agreement with the United States or with Russia, if the promises given are not carried out, there will be no change concerning the steps we need to take,” he told journalists, according to the newspaper Hurriyet.

Erdogan said he had also asked Putin what would happen if the Syrian Kurdish fighters donned Syrian army uniforms and remained in the border area. Putin responded by saying that he would not let that happen, Erdogan said.

Cavusoglu, Turkey’s foreign minister, said the deal with Russia would continue until a lasting political solution for Syria is reached. He also said that Turkey agreed not to conduct joint patrols in the city of Qamishli at the eastern end of the border, because of Russian concerns they could lead to a confrontation between Turkish troops and Syrian government forces in the area.

Kid Pulls a Political Bait and Switch on the NBA Basketball Game Dance Cam

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 06:58 AM PDT

At a game full of fans in the crowd hamming it up for the camera at the NBA opener, one kid ensured he would seize his short window to make his political statement.

During a timeout during Tuesday night’s game in which Los Angeles Clippers beat the Los Angeles Lakers, the dance cam appeared to be scanning the fans in the crowd for the typical movers and shakers. Nothing too out of the ordinary there, until things took a more politically-minded turn.

A boy was able to snag the attention of the dance cam operator by dancing festively with a Clippers shirt. But as soon as he has the spotlight, he swiftly switched gears and pulled out a a new shirt that read “Fight for Freedom, Stand up for Hong Kong” and pumped his fist in the air.

The camera swiftly panned away, but he was able to make his feelings known by showcasing the shirt’s message for a few seconds. Before the game started, Hong Kong supporters were demonstrating with a protest just outside the Staples center handing out the T-shirts for free.

This kid’s message comes amid the recent tensions between the NBA and China, which began when Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. “Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong,” he wrote on Twitter. Morey has since apologized for the now-deleted tweet, but China has backtracked from its relationship with the league regardless.

Speaking at the TIME 100 Summit this month, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said “the losses have already been substantial. Our games are not back on the air in China as we speak, and we’ll see what happens next.”

Chinese state broadcaster CCTB opted not to air any of the NBA games on the opening day of the season. The Chinese government said the NBA needed to “show respect.”

Brief though the shirt flashing moment was, people have been circulating the clip online.

UN Investigator: 11 Million North Koreans Are Undernourished

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:01 AM PDT

(UNITED NATIONS) — Food insecurity in North Korea “is at an alarming level,” with nearly half the population — 11 million people — undernourished, the U.N. independent investigator on human rights in the country said Tuesday.

Tomas Ojea Quintana told the General Assembly’s human rights committee that 140,000 children are estimated to be suffering from “undernutrition,” including 30,000 who “face an increased risk of death.” Quintana said the government, which has primary responsibility for ensuring access to food, “is violating its human rights obligations due to its failing economic and agricultural policies.”

In addition, he said, “climate conditions, infertile land, natural disasters and the negative impact of sanctions have contributed to further food insecurity.”

More broadly, Quintana said he has seen no improvement in North Korea’s human rights situation during his three years as special rapporteur.

“The country’s economic resources are being diverted away from the essential needs of the people,” he said. “Pervasive discrimination in the public distribution system means that ordinary citizens, especially farmers and people in rural areas, have not been receiving any rations.”

Quintana said collective farming and the failure to allow farmers to benefit from individual plots of land is further exacerbating food insecurity.

“At the same time, the government has failed to put in place conditions where people can securely engage in trade and exchange in marketplaces without facing criminalization, extortion and other forms of abuse,” he said. Nonetheless, he added, the vast majority of North Koreans “are now engaged in such market activity for their survival.”

Ironically, he said, the government’s failure to regulate nascent market activity is creating increasing inequality based on wealth, “where only those with money have access to basic rights such as education, health care, freedom of movement and adequate housing.”

Quintana said severe restrictions on basic freedoms continue to be widespread, including surveillance and close monitoring of civilians. “North Korean people continue to live in the entrenched fear of being sent to a political prison camp,” called a kwanliso, he said.

“If you are considered to be a spy of the hostile countries or a traitor, when in reality you are simply exercising your basic human rights, you can be suddenly taken by agents of the Ministry of State Security to a kwanliso and never be seen again,” Quintana said. “Suspects’ families are never informed of the decisions or of the whereabouts of their relatives.”

On the issue of North Koreans who have fled to China, Quintana said in the past six months he has received information from family members living in South Korea of an increasing number of these escapees being detained in China.

He said any North Korean who escapes should not be forcibly returned because there are substantial grounds they would be tortured or subjected to other human rights violations.

“I appreciate the government of China’s increased engagement with me on this concern, and I hope that this will lead to greater compliance with international standards,” he said.

Quintana said North Korea has accepted 132 recommendations from other U.N. member states, including one “to grant immediate, free and unimpeded access to international humanitarian organizations to provide assistance to the most vulnerable groups, including prisoners.” He said this could lead to the first international access to places of detention, “and could therefore be an opportunity to improve prison conditions.”

14 Best Bitcoin Wallets to Store Your Bitcoins

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 08:47 AM PDT

Here’s something every bitcoin owner should know: the safety and security of your bitcoins is ultimately your responsibility.

Combining digital security knowledge as well as secure bitcoin storage is important if you don’t want your accounts hacked and bitcoins drained. Remember – bitcoin transactions are not reversible. To send or spend bitcoins, one must have access to both public and private keys. Private keys, especially, must be protected.

Types of Bitcoin Wallets

There are a few types of bitcoin wallets and they have varying security mechanisms to ensure the safety of private keys.

Simplistically, bitcoin wallets can be divided into 5 types: desktop, mobile, online, hardware and paper wallets. Some types may overlap or used in combination with each other. I’m going to touch on what to expect from each type and feature a few examples you can try out.

Here are 14 secure bitcoin wallet options you can choose from.

Desktop wallet

  • Bitcoin desktop wallets offer one of the highest (if not the highest) levels of security in terms of bitcoin storage.
  • You must download the software to your computer and perform bitcoin transactions from desktops, so it may not be practical for some people.
  • This option can be technical and confusing for bitcoin newbies.
Bitcoin Core

Bitcoin Core is the first and original wallet. Using this option means having control over both your public and private keys, which ensures safe storage.

However, Bitcoin Core also requires a lot of space as the software comes with data on every bitcoin transaction ever performed.

According to the download page, as of 2016 you need 65GB of free space – this number will increase as more bitcoin transactions happen every day.

Armory

Calling themselves ‘The Only Open-Source Wallet With Cold Storage And Multi-Signature Support’, Armory is one of the popular options around for desktop bitcoin wallet.

armory

Private keys are stored in an offline computer, which means that only someone with access to the physical location of the computer (it is kept secret) can steal bitcoins.

Mobile Wallets

  • Bitcoin mobile wallets are not only accessible and practical
  • Many also incorporate other layers of security to ensure users’ bitcoins are not compromised.
  • It is a good idea to keep only a small amount of bitcoins in mobile wallets while keeping the rest in more secure options.

Note: All the recommendations below are available for both Android and iOS users.

Mycelium

Mycelium is one of the safest and most recommended options for secure bitcoin storage on mobile. Boasting ‘bank-grade security’, it boasts Hierarchical Deterministic wallets, private key deletion and ‘watch only’ accounts.

mycelium
Wirex

This full-fledged bitcoin service provider offers both online and mobile secure bitcoin wallets. What differentiates Wirex from the rest is its ease of use while not compromising security.

wirex

Users get multi-signature (‘multi-sig’) wallets and can enable 2-factor authentication (2FA) for both app and Wirex-linked email addresses, making third-party breaches hard.

Xapo

Famous for its vault and security, Xapo combines cold storage and multi-sig technology to keep users’ bitcoins safe. Its servers are kept ‘behind reinforced concrete walls, a steel blast door and radio wave-blocking Faraday cage’, located ‘within the Alps’.

xapo

Online wallets

  • Online bitcoin wallets are wallets that are easily accessible on the Web via any device so long as it can be connected to the Internet.
  • It is easier and faster to make transactions via online wallets due to its accessibility.
  • Phishing, malware, insider hacking or plain lack of digital security knowledge makes it easy for hackers to steal bitcoins from online wallets.
  • The failure of two huge bitcoin exchanges (Mt Gox and Bitfinex) makes people wary of such services.

Although the bitcoin wallets recommended in this section have a high reputation, we suggest you keep larger amounts of bitcoins in other types of wallets.

Blockchain.info

Blockchain.info is the most popular (8 mil wallets) website everyone uses to perform and check bitcoin transactions. They are often praised for their ease of use, multi-country support, and cross-platform capability.

Blockchain.info

Aside from web wallet, Blockchain.info is also available on desktop and mobile app.

BitGo

A respected name in the Bitcoin world, BitGo is considered a leader in blockchain security. BitGo is great for individuals and businesses who prefer near-instant transactions. Usually, a bitcoin transaction needs between 3-6 confirmations, taking about 30-60 minutes.

BitGo

With BitGo Instant and its zero-confirmation technology, users can make both secure and fast transactions.

GreenAddress

Many bitcoin holders have the tendency to check bitcoin wallets multiple times to reassure themselves their bitcoins are still there. This constant login-logout might be unsafe if it was done over unsecured WiFi or exposed to malware or phishing tactics.

GreenAddress

GreenAddress’s watch-only mode helps users to check balances without compromising safety. Hierarchical Deterministic wallets also help to keep users’ bitcoins secure.

Hardware Wallet

  • The method of choice for many bitcoin holders to keep significant quantities of bitcoins
  • Hardware bitcoin wallets are user-friendly and portable.
  • All of these Plug-and-Play options give users complete control of their own bitcoins.
Keepkey

One of the biggest fears of a bitcoin holder is the unknown transactions that depletes all of their bitcoin savings. KeepKey helps to alleviate this fear. Users will have to approve each outgoing transaction on the KeepKey device, manually.

Keepkey

Private keys remain in the device, which is also PIN-protected in case it falls into the wrong hands.

Trezor

A trusted name and endorsed by many key Bitcoin community leaders, Trezor is small and simple to use. It features security against malware and disaster recovery in case of theft or loss.

Trezor
Ledger Nano

The smallest and most cost-effective option, the USD-sized Ledger Nano comes in a few variations. Everyday users can select between Ledger Nano or Ledger Nano S. The latter is the first hardware wallet that can also store Ether (ETH/ETH), making it the first of its kind.

Ledger Nano

Paper Wallet

  • Bitcoin paper wallets are safe against hackers as the bitcoins are brought offline.
  • Users have control of their bitcoins at all times as they keep own private keys.
  • The problem, however, is storage. Paper can be destroyed, torn, fade or otherwise lost.
  • Unlike hardware wallets, there is no recovery mechanism for paper wallets – so lost bitcoins are lost forever. This is something you need to keep in mind if you want to use this option.
BitcoinPaperWallet

Users can print tamper-resistant paper wallets with these services to keep their bitcoins offline. Offering additional security tips, designs, and supplies, this website is a favorite among bitcoin cold storage advocates. It even has a handy video showing you how to use this paper wallet.

BitAddress

BitAddress.org is a no-frills free service that can generate bitcoin paper wallets easily.

Conclusion

To a new bitcoin user, this information might seem daunting. You might have heard of bitcoin losses due to hacks, malware, or perhaps simply human error.

We suggest keeping most of your bitcoins in either paper or hardware wallets (or if you have space, in Bitcoin Core). If you must keep bitcoins in online or mobile wallets, spread them around in a few reputable websites as recommended above.

How to SSH into Server Without Entering Password

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 06:13 AM PDT

In this post, I’ll show you how to bypass the password prompt and get you connected to your server immediately after you enter to execute the SSH command.

Why are we doing this?

One of the hassles when connecting to your server is the entering-password step.

Now, you might think – it’s not a big deal, it’s just an extra step – but what if you have a reasonably complex password that you need to retrieve from somewhere else (notes, or password management app). Or your job requires you to access the servers frequently, then skipping small steps like entering passwords can help speed things up big time.

An idea of how it works (and it’s safe)

Traditionally, to login to the server, you do these steps in its chronological order:

  1. Type ssh username@domain.com, hit Enter/Return
  2. Type/paste password, hit Enter/Return
  3. You’re in!

We’re going to eliminate Step 2; after inserting ssh username@domain.com and hitting Enter/Return, you’re immediately connected to the server. How about that?

And don’t worry, this is extremely secure, as long as you ensure no unauthorized personnel can gain access to your PC.

Let’s get started.

1 – Collect the following information

Before we dive into the execution, here is some information about your local machine and remote server you need to collect beforehand.

Write them down in a note, or at least have them accessible at ease.

(1.1) – Path to SSH folder in the local machine.

This is the path to .ssh/ on your machine. It varies from one operating system to another.

Examples:

  • macOS/Users/username/.ssh/
  • Windows/c/Users/username/.ssh/id_rsa.pub

For more information on how to find the path to ssh folder in Windows 10, click here.

Note: For macOS users, typing the command cd ~/.ssh will usually bring you into the .ssh folder.

(1.2) – Information for remote server

You need the credentials and several other details about your server. In short, collect the following:

  1. Hostname/ IP
  2. Username
  3. Password
  4. Port number
(1.3) – Path to “authorized_key” in the remote server

With the information gathered from 1.2, login to your server, and find the path to the “authorized_key” file.

The file is usually located at: /home/username/.ssh.

Have you gotten all the required information? Great, let’s proceed!

2. Getting an SSH Key

In order for the password-less SSH login to work, we will need an SSH key from your local computer.

Firstly, I’m going to show you how to check for an existing SSH Key on your local computer, how to remove existing SSH keys, and then finally creating a new SSH key.

If you’re sure that there are no existing SSH Keys in your local machine, then you can jump right ahead to creating a new SSH Key.

Checking for existing SSH Keys
  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Paste the following and hit Enter/Return: ls -al ~/.ssh.

If the folder contains files like the following, then SSH Keys exist on your local machine.

  • id_rsa
  • id_rsa.pub
ssh key exists

You can either keep them, provided that you still remember their respective passphrases, else I’d recommend that you delete them.

If the folder is empty, then you’re set to creating your new SSH key.

Removing existing SSH Keys
  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Paste cd ~/.ssh && ls -al and hit Enter/Return. This will bring you into the SSH folder and list all existing files inside it.
  3. Identify all files with names like “id_rsa” and “id_rsa.pub”
  4. Delete each of them one by one using the following command: rm filename.Example: rm id_rsa.pub.

Note: If you’re performing this on a shared workstation or are unsure of which files to delete, do not proceed.

Generating new SSH Key

If your SSH folder is empty, then it probably looks something like this.

ssh key does not exist

Let’s start generating a new SSH Key.

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Paste the following codes, replace “youremail@example.com” with your actual email address, and hit Enter/Return: ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -C "youremail@example.com".
  3. Hit Enter/Return (recommended) to use “id_rsa” as the default filename.
  4. Hit Enter/Return (recommended) to create an SSH key without a passphrase.

Your SSH Key has been successfully created, and your terminal should output something similar to the screenshot below.

ssh key generated

3. Upload SSH Key to Server

We’ve come to our last and final step – uploading the generated key (public key) to the server.

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Type cd ~/.ssh to go inside the .ssh folder.
  3. Copy paste the following command after replacing “username/domain.com” and “/path/to/server/.ssh/authorized_keys” with actual server information:cat id_rsa.pub | ssh username/domain.com 'cat - >> /path/to/server/.ssh/authorized_keys'.

The command above will copy the public key in id_rsa.pub (from local machine) into authorized_keys (in remote server).

If the command executed correctly, you will be prompted to enter the password to the remote server, insert the password, and hit enter/return.

4. Testing

That’s it! Now, let’s give it a test.

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Login to your server by entering ssh username@domain.com.

You should be able to login without entering the password.

One last thing

Copy the following codes, replace “/path/to/.ssh/” with the actual path to your .ssh folder, and hit Enter/Return.

chmod 700 /path/to/.ssh && chmod 600 /path/to/.ssh/*

This will ensure your newly created SSH key be stored securely inside the .ssh folder.

6 Cool Image Captions with CSS3

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 03:43 AM PDT

CSS3 is really powerful. It used to be that we need images or a bunch of JavaScript codelines to make a simple transition effect. Nowadays we can do the same with only CSS3.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create image captions with various transitions simply using CSS3.

Browser Support

This caption will be much dependent on transform and transition properties which are relatively new features, so, it would be wise to take note of the browser support needed to run the caption smoothly.

The following are browsers that already support transform and transition:

  • Internet Explorer 10+ (not released yet)
  • Firefox 6+
  • Chrome 13+
  • Safari 3.2+
  • Opera 11+

Now, let’s start the tutorial.

HTML Structure

We have 6 images; each image with a different caption style.

  <div id="mainwrapper"><!-- This #mainwrapper section contains all of our images to make them center and look proper in the browser ->  	<!-- Image Caption 1 -->  	<div id="box-1" class="box">  		<img id="image-1" src="css3-image-captions/1.jpg"/>  		<span class="caption simple-caption">  		<p>Simple Caption</p>  		</span>  	</div>        <!-- Image Caption 2 -->      <div id="box-2" class="box">          <img id="image-2" src="css3-image-captions/2.jpg"/>          <span class="caption full-caption">          <h4>Full Caption</h4>          <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit,sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat.</p>          </span>      </div>        <!-- Image Caption 3 -->      <div id="box-3" class="box">          <img id="image-3" src="css3-image-captions/3.jpg"/>          <span class="caption fade-caption">          <h4>Fade Caption</h4>          <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit,sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat.</p>          </span>      </div>            <!-- Image Caption 4 -->      <div id="box-4" class="box">          <img id="image-4" src="css3-image-captions/4.jpg"/>          <span class="caption slide-caption">          <h4>Slide Caption</h4>          <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit,sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat.</p>          </span>      </div>            <!-- Image Caption 5 -->      <div id="box-5" class="box">          <div class="rotate"><!-- Rotating div -->              <img id="image-5" src="css3-image-captions/5.jpg"/>              <span class="caption rotate-caption">              <h4>This is rotate caption</h4>              <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat.</p>              </span>          </div>      </div>        <!-- Image Caption 6 -->      <div id="box-6" class="box">          <img id="image-6" src="css3-image-captions/6.jpg"/>          <span class="caption scale-caption">          <h4>Free Style Caption</h4>          <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat.</p>          </span>      </div>  </div> <!-- end of #mainwrapper-->

Basic CSS

Before styling any element, it is always a good start to reset all the properties using this CSS reset and give them their default style values, so all browsers will render the same result (except maybe, IE6).

The styles will be separated in style.css file, so our HTML file will look neat. However, do not forget to add a link style inside the head tag to apply the styling rules in the file.

<link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" />

OK, let’s begin styling the element, starting from the html tag and the main wrapper id:

  html { background-color: #eaeaea; }    #mainwrapper {    font: 10pt normal Arial, sans-serif;    height: auto;    margin: 80px auto 0 auto;    text-align: center;    width: 660px;  }

Basic CSS

Image Box Style

We apply some common styles in the boxes containing the images. The boxes will be displayed side by side using float left. Notice that we also added overflow: hidden property; this will make all objects inside that pass through the div to be hidden.

We also declare transition property on every image inside the box, in case we need the image transition later on.

  #mainwrapper .box {      border: 5px solid #fff;      cursor: pointer;      height: 182px;      float: left;      margin: 5px;      position: relative;      overflow: hidden;      width: 200px;      -webkit-box-shadow: 1px 1px 1px 1px #ccc;      -moz-box-shadow: 1px 1px 1px 1px #ccc;      box-shadow: 1px 1px 1px 1px #ccc;  }    #mainwrapper .box img {      position: absolute;      left: 0;      -webkit-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -moz-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -o-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -ms-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      transition: all 300ms ease-out;  }

Image Box Style

Caption Common Style

The caption will has some common styles and also transition property. Rather than use opacity property, we use the RGBA color mode with 0.8 for the alpha channel to make the caption look a bit transparent without affecting the text inside.

  #mainwrapper .box .caption {      background-color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);      position: absolute;      color: #fff;      z-index: 100;      -webkit-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -moz-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -o-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -ms-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      transition: all 300ms ease-out;      left: 0;  }

Caption Common Style

Caption 1

The first caption will have a simple transition effect that is commonly used for a caption. The caption will come up from the bottom when we hover over the image. To address it, the caption will have a fixed height of 30px and we apply its bottom position -30px to hide it below the image.

  #mainwrapper .box .simple-caption {      height: 30px;      width: 200px;      display: block;      bottom: -30px;      line-height: 25pt;      text-align: center;  }

Caption 2

The second type has the full width and height of the image/box dimension (200x200px) and the transition would be like a sliding door effect only that it will slide from top to bottom.

  #mainwrapper .box .full-caption {      width: 170px;      height: 170px;      top: -200px;      text-align: left;      padding: 15px;  }

Caption 3

The third caption will have fading effect. So, we added opacity: 0 for its initial state.

  #mainwrapper .box .fade-caption, #mainwrapper .box .scale-caption {      opacity: 0;      width: 170px;      height: 170px;      text-align: left;      padding: 15px;  }

Caption 4

The fourth caption will slide from left to the right, so we fixed 200px to the left (left:200px) as its initial position.

  ** Caption 4: Slide **/  #mainwrapper .box .slide-caption {      width: 170px;      height: 170px;      text-align: left;      padding: 15px;      left: 200px;  }

Caption 5

The fifth caption will have rotating effect. It is not just the caption that will rotate, but also the image. It is more like the changing of position by rotating.

So, we add transform property with a -180 degree rotation, unless you prefer rotating your monitor to read the caption.

  #mainwrapper #box-5.box .rotate-caption {      width: 170px;      height: 170px;      text-align: left;      padding: 15px;      top: 200px;      -moz-transform: rotate(-180deg);      -o-transform: rotate(-180deg);      -webkit-transform: rotate(-180deg);      transform: rotate(-180deg);  }    #mainwrapper .box .rotate {      width: 200px;      height: 400px;      -webkit-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -moz-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -o-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -ms-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      transition: all 300ms ease-out;  }

Caption 6

The last caption will have scale transform. However, in the previous captions, the text inside it will actually show along with the .caption transition shift. In this section we will make it a bit different.

The text will appear after the transition shift is done. So, we add transition-delay on the text, in this case the h4 and p tag.

  #mainwrapper .box .scale-caption h4, #mainwrapper .box .scale-caption p {      position: relative;      left: -200px;      width: 170px;      -webkit-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -moz-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -o-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      -ms-transition: all 300ms ease-out;      transition: all 300ms ease-out;  }    #mainwrapper .box .scale-caption h4 {      -webkit-transition-delay: 300ms;      -moz-transition-delay: 300ms;      -o-transition-delay: 300ms;      -ms-transition-delay: 300ms;      transition-delay: 300ms;  }    #mainwrapper .box .scale-caption p {      -webkit-transition-delay: 500ms;      -moz-transition-delay: 500ms;      -o-transition-delay: 500ms;      -ms-transition-delay: 500ms;      transition-delay: 500ms;  }

Caption Common Style

Let’s Make Them Move

In the following section, we will define the behavior of the caption when we hover over the images or boxes.

Caption Behavior 1: Show up.

For the first caption, we would like it to show up (from the bottom) when we hover over the box. To address this move we use transform property and the CSS code below tells the caption to move 100% of its weight to the top.

  #mainwrapper .box:hover .simple-caption {      -moz-transform: translateY(-100%);      -o-transform: translateY(-100%);      -webkit-transform: translateY(-100%);      transform: translateY(-100%);  }

If you don’t get the point of having negative value for the translateY, you might want to read this tutorial first to get more insight.

Caption Behavior 2: Move it down.

Conversely, the second caption will move down from the top. So, we will have positive value for translateY.

  #mainwrapper .box:hover .full-caption {      -moz-transform: translateY(100%);      -o-transform: translateY(100%);      -webkit-transform: translateY(100%);      transform: translateY(100%);  }
Caption Behavior 3: Fade in.

The third caption is actually the easiest one. When the box is on hover the caption opacity will turn to 1 making it visible, and since we have added transition property in the caption class, the transition should run smoothly.

  #mainwrapper .box:hover .fade-caption {      opacity: 1;  }
Caption Behavior 4: Slide it to the left.

As we mention before, this caption will slide form the left, however, the image will also slide out to the right. So, here we have 2 CSS declarations.

The CSS code below indicates that when we hover over the box the caption will slide 100% of its width to the left. Notice that we now use translateX, because we want the slide to move horizontally from right to the left.

  #mainwrapper .box:hover .slide-caption {    background-color: rgba(0,0,0,1) !important;    -moz-transform: translateX(-100%);    -o-transform: translateX(-100%);    -webkit-transform: translateX(-100%);    opacity: 1;    transform: translateX(-100%);  }

When we hover over the box the image will slide out to the left.

  #mainwrapper .box:hover img#image-4 {    -moz-transform: translateX(-100%);    -o-transform: translateX(-100%);    -webkit-transform: translateX(-100%);    transform: translateX(-100%);  }
Caption Behavior 5: Rotate it.

This caption is different from the rest, as it will not move from right or left, but will rotate. When the box is on hover, the div containing the image and the caption will rotate -180 counter-clockwise hiding the image and showing the caption.

  /** Rotate Caption :hover Behaviour **/      #mainwrapper .box:hover .rotate {      background-color: rgba(0,0,0,1) !important;      -moz-transform: rotate(-180deg);      -o-transform: rotate(-180deg);      -webkit-transform: rotate(-180deg);      transform: rotate(-180deg);  }
Caption Behavior 6: Scale it up.

This caption will combine several transform effects. When the box is on hover the image will scale up by 140% (1.4) from its initial dimension.

  	#mainwrapper .box:hover #image-6 {      -moz-transform: scale(1.4);      -o-transform: scale(1.4);      -webkit-transform: scale(1.4);      transform: scale(1.4);  }

And if you saw the CSS above under Caption 6 heading, we have hidden the text to the left by 200px. This CSS code below tells the text to move to their initial position. So, the text will slide in from the left to the right simultaneously.

  #mainwrapper .box:hover .scale-caption h4,  #mainwrapper .box:hover .scale-caption p {      -moz-transform: translateX(200px);      -o-transform: translateX(200px);      -webkit-transform: translateX(200px);      transform: translateX(200px);  }

Summary

Although these CSS features are cool, but it is not widely applicable yet, due to the browser support limitations we have mentioned earlier. However, keep experimenting with these new features, because this is the way we will be shaping a web page in the future.

RAM Cleaning Tools For Windows – Do They Really Work?

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:14 AM PDT

If you don’t have "enough" RAM in your PC, then you must have tried (or thought of trying) a RAM cleaning tool that promises to quickly "free up" RAM.

Have you ever wondered how the cleaning and quickly boosts in RAM work? How do these tools free up RAM? Do they allocate the processes somewhere else or kill the processes? Or do they just fake it?

Well, there are loads of debates going on around RAM cleaning/optimizing tools, both in favor and against.

In this article, I will try to clear up misconceptions about RAM cleaning tools.

How RAM works

Operating systems use both the RAM and storage inside your hard drive to write and exchange processes.

Almost all the latest operating systems (released in the last ten years) have a smart RAM management system to cache processes and take full advantage of the physical RAM and the virtual RAM stored in the hard drive storage.

Physical RAM is high-speed, so all active processes are written there.

On the other hand, hard drive storage is very slow, so the passive processes are moved there to keep more RAM free to tackle more important or pressing processes.

Virtual RAM is the one typically stored in a file in your system drive; it’s called pagefile.sys in Windows and swapfile in Mac OS X.

When you use your PC, the operating system is continuously moving less important processes (passive ones) to virtual RAM (slower memory), and freeing up actual RAM (faster memory) for important processes (active ones).

Additionally, your OS also caches less important processes to free up RAM for essential operations.

You can press Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys in Windows to bring up the Task Manager and move to the “Performance” tab to see all the details regarding RAM.

On Mac OS X you can press Command + Shift + Escape to open “Activity Monitor” and see the RAM usage in the “Memory” section.

performance tab

How to see RAM work in real-time

You can also see this happening in real-time, here is what you need to do:

Open two tabs in your browser with separate websites on them, like hongkiat.com on one and your email service on the other. If you switch between these tabs, there will be no delay or lag..

Now minimize the browser and do anything else in your PC e.g., Open the File Manager and move 2-3 folders to another location. After 10-15 seconds come back and try to switch between the tabs again, you will see the "processing icon" next to your mouse cursor (it’s a blue circle in Windows), and there might be a tiny lag as well.

That 1-3 seconds process shows that the operating system is moving operations from the virtual RAM to the physical RAM.

Note: If you have an SSD instead of HDD, then the delay should be very small, almost unnoticeable.

Overall, the RAM management system in all the latest operating systems is excellent and should not require intervention from third-party tools.

How RAM cleaning tools work

Most RAM cleaning tools minimize physical RAM usage. Usually, they shift all the processes to virtual RAM and clear the physical RAM cache to free up RAM.

As soon as you tell the RAM cleaning tool to free up RAM, it will put extreme pressure on the physical RAM. The operating system will think that the tool requires too much RAM, and to achieve that, it will move all the other processes to virtual RAM.

Once the cleaning tool is sure that all the processes have been moved to virtual RAM, it will stop putting the pressure and show you that it has freed so much RAM. In the same process, it will also delete all the cached data inside the physical RAM.

To illustrate the process, I have done two quick experiments, which you can try on your own as well:

Experiment 1

I have selected the Glary Utilities built-in “Memory Optimizer” which could free up to 90% of total RAM. Based on the screenshots below, my RAM usage was 78%-84% at the time of the experiment.

memory optimizer

When I clicked on “Optimize” to free up RAM, the tool immediately started using 99%-100% of my RAM. After 4-5 seconds it stopped using the RAM and my RAM usage went down to as low as 23%!

experiment screenshot 01
experiment screenshot 02

The tool released a huge amount of RAM and an average user will definitely find this eye opening. However once it was done, all the opened programs in my PC got stuck and took at least 5-7 seconds to work again.

In the screenshot below you can see how my Opera browser is not responding after using this tool.

opera not responding
Experiment 2

To further prove that these tools only send processes to virtual RAM, I did another experiment. The experiment is the same as the one above, but this time I disabled “pagefile.sys” in my Windows PC i.e. I completely disabled the virtual RAM.

As soon as I pressed the “Optimize” button to free up RAM, it again started using 100% of my RAM and in less than 2 seconds my PC crashed with a blue screen of death.

This happened because virtual RAM was not available. As Windows had nowhere to send the other processes, the pressure led to my PC crashing.

Why RAM cleaning tools are bad

Now that you know how RAM cleaning tools work, let’s see why they are bad.

We now know that RAM cleaning tools move all the active and passive processes to virtual RAM, which is much slower than the physical RAM.

This means your PC will slow down until the operating system moves the processes back to physical RAM again.

As I said in the first experiment, the programs in my PC got stuck for 5-7 seconds after the use of the RAM cleaning tool. In those 5-7 seconds the operating system’s RAM management system was trying to fix the mistakes of the RAM cleaning tool and move all the process back to the physical RAM.

Additionally, as these tools also delete cached data inside the RAM, it will also take more time for you to load a recently closed or minimized program.

Where RAM cleaning tools work

There aren’t many advantages to freeing up RAM, but it may help take care of programs with memory leak issues.

A memory leak issue simply means that memory is allocated to certain programs but it is not used by the program or released upon the program being terminated. This memory cannot be flushed by the operating system.

You have to restart the PC or use a RAM cleaning tool to regain it. If your PC’s RAM is filled even when there are no programs or processes running, it could also be a memory leak.

RAM Cleaners vs. RAM Managers

I am sure many readers will argue that memory cleaners like CleanMem, Wise Memory Optimizer or Memory Cleaner do speed up the PC. The thing is, programs like CleanMem are not RAM cleaning tools.

They are more of a RAM manager which works alongside the Windows built-in memory management system.

These tools force Windows to stop moving current passive processes to virtual memory (pagefile.sys) and instead move them to cache inside the RAM as “Standby” processes.

Cache is much faster to flush or recover data from as compared to virtual memory that has slow read/write speeds.

Hence, these tools do help speed up the PC as the passive processes are now being read from the cache instead of the virtual memory.

If you are low on RAM, then a tool like CleanMem will surely speed up the PC (I am using it for over a year now). On the other hand, memory cleaner tools will focus on moving the processes to virtual memory, which is bad for the PC.

Last Words

The main reason why anyone uses RAM cleaning tools is because their RAM is filling up quickly and they want to "free up" RAM. As operating systems cache the previously opened processes, it may seem like your RAM is being used up rather quickly.

However, a full RAM isn’t necessarily a bad thing as the operating system is taking advantage of the RAM. On the contrary, free RAM is useless as it is not being used by the operating system to speed things up.

Even if an operating system is low on RAM for new processes, it can quickly flush the cache and use the freed RAM to open new processes. If you are looking to speed up the PC, then a RAM manager tool will be a better option than a scammy RAM cleaner that makes it look like your PC is speeding up when in fact, it is slowing things down behind the scenes.

Lastly, letting the operating system handle RAM is a sound option for most users. If you are low on RAM, the only way to gain more speeds is to upgrade the RAM. If you really do need to clean RAM, then use a RAM manager instead of a RAM cleaning tool.

Advanced Checkbox Styling with CSS Grid

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 06:43 AM PDT

The CSS Grid Layout Module can not only solve a mammoth of a layout problem but also some good old mulish issues we’ve been dealing with for a long time, such as styling a checkbox label.

While there’s a relatively straightforward method to style the label when it appears after the checkbox, it’s not that easy when the label appears before it.

Checkbox styling without CSS Grid

Styling a label after a checkbox is something us developers have been doing ever since we read about it somewhere. This technique is one of the prime and old examples of the powerful dynamics that CSS can possess.

Here’s the code you already might be familiar with, that styles a label after a checked checkbox:

  <input type="checkbox"> <label>label for the checkbox</label>
  input:checked + label {    /* style me */  }

A styled label after a checkbox might look like this (however, you can use other style rules as well):

Styling label without the CSS Grid

The above CSS code uses the adjacent sibling combinator marked by the + key. When a checkbox is in the :checked state, an element after it (usually a label) can be styled using this method.

Such a simple and effective technique! What could possibly go wrong with it? Nothing—until you want to display the label before the checkbox.

The adjacent sibling combinator selects the next element; this means the label has to come after the checkbox in the HTML source code.

So, to make a label appear before the belonging checkbox on the screen, we can’t just move it before the checkbox in the source code, as a previous sibling selector doesn’t exist in CSS.

Which leaves only one option: repositioning the checkbox and the label using transform or position or margin or another CSS property with some kind of telekinetic power, so that the label appears to the left of the checkbox on the screen.

Problems with the traditional method

There’s nothing majorly wrong with the aforementioned technique but it can be inefficient in certain cases. I mean cases in which the rearranged positions of the checkbox and the label don’t work anymore.

Think responsive, for instance. You might have to resize or reposition the checkbox according to the device it’s displayed on. When that happens, you will need to reposition the label as well, as there’ll be no automatic realignment done to the label in response to the repositioning/resizing of the checkbox.

We can eliminate this disadvantage if we could just provide some solid layout for the checkbox and the label, instead of roughly positioning them on the page.

But, almost all layout systems, such as tables or columns, require you to add the label before the checkbox in the source code to make it appear the same way on screen. That’s something we don’t want to do because the next element selector on the label will stop working.

CSS Grid, on the other hand, is a layout system that is not dependent on the placement/order of elements in the source code.

The reordering capabilities of grid layout intentionally affect only the visual rendering, leaving speech order and navigation based on the source order. This allows authors to manipulate the visual presentation while leaving the source order intact… – CSS Grid Layout Module Level 1, W3C

Thus, CSS grid is an ideal solution to style the label that appears before the checkbox.

Checkbox styling with CSS Grid

Let’s start with the HTML code. The order of the checkbox and label will remain the same as before. We just add both of them to a grid.

  <div id="cbgrid"> <input type="checkbox"> <label>label for the checkbox</label> </div>

The accompanying CSS is as follows:

  #cbgrid {    display: grid;    grid-template-areas: "left right";    width: 150px;  }  input[type=checkbox] {    grid-area: right;  }  label {    grid-area: left;  }

I’ll not go in depth on how the CSS grid works, as I already wrote a detailed article on the subject, that you can read here. Some basics, however: the display: grid property turns an element into a grid container, grid-area identifies the grid area an element belongs to, and grid-template-areas forms a grid layout, comprised of different grid areas.

In the above code, there are two grid areas: "left" and "right". They make up two columns of a grid row. The checkbox belongs to the "right" area and the label to the "left". Here’s how they look on screen:

Styling label with the CSS Grid

Since we didn’t change the relative placement of the checkbox and the label in the source code, we can still use the adjacent sibling combinator:

  input:checked + label {    /* style me */  }

Note that a grid item is always blockified; it appears with a surrounding box known as the grid-level box. If you don’t want that, for instance for a label, put a wrapper on that item (wrap it in another element) and turn that wrapper into the grid area.

That’s it, folks. CSS grid hopefully helps you nail down the layouts of those cheeky checkboxes.

How to Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:00 PM PDT

Anyone who's ever had acrylic nails knows that they can absolutely ravage your natural nails if removed incorrectly. Typically, the best way to repair this damage is to wait for them to regrow. In the meantime, you can take steps to make sure your nails grow in happy and healthy by providing daily and weekly care and varying your diet to make sure you're getting the nutrients you need.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Caring for Your Nails

  1. Trim back weak nails to prevent breakage. If your nails feel weak after you take off the acrylics, it's likely they will break, which can be painful and result in jagged edges.[1] Cut your nails straight across with a pair of clean nail clippers. Round off the corners so they're not sharp.[2]

Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 1 Version 4.jpg
    • You can also use manicure scissors to trim your nails.
  2. File your nails in one direction only. Choose a fine-grit nail file, as it will be kinder to your nails. Start from one outside edge on your nail and move across the nail in that direction. Don't go back and forth, as that can ruin the edges of your nails.[3]

    • To keep from overdoing it, place the edge of the file under the tip of your nail so you can see what you're doing.
  3. Buff your nails once a week. Remove oils from your nails first by rubbing acetone, rubbing alcohol, or vinegar over them. Use small, circular motions to buff the tops of your nails just until they're smooth. Don't go overboard, as you don't want to remove too much of the nail.[4]

    • You can also try buffing in an "X" shape.
    • However, you don't want to do this too often, as it can remove some of your nails' thickness over time.[5]
  4. Keep your hands moisturized with hand creams. To create healthy nails, your hands need to be hydrated. Apply hand cream or lotion at least twice a day, including once before bedtime. Pick a heavy cream for night time for extra moisturizing power.[6]

    • Try putting on lotion after every time you wash your hands.
    • Put on cotton gloves at night after applying lotion to help seal in the moisture.[7]
  5. Rub a cuticle oil with jojoba oil in it around your nails. Keeping your cuticles moisturized will support your nails and help them stay moisturized and healthy, too. Apply cuticle oil around your nails at least once a day. At night is best so that you can leave it on while you sleep.[8]

    • Put it on after you apply your lotion or hand cream.
  6. Try a nail hardener to protect your nails. If your nails are weak and brittle, a nail hardener may provide enough support to allow them to grow back properly. Simply paint on a coating of nail hardener like you would nail polish, moving from the nail bed up to the tip of the nail. Allow the hardener to dry and re-apply as needed.[9]

    • You can find nail hardeners at most drugstores and big box stores. They may also be labeled as "nail strengtheners."
    • Some people find nail hardeners work a little too well, making nails more likely to break. If that's the case for you, try just wearing a clear base coat of nail polish instead.[10]
  7. Wait for your nails to grow back in. While you can't completely heal the damage down by acrylics, your nails will eventually regrow. They will typically come back in strong and healthy as long as you are paying attention to nail care and eating a healthy, well-balanced diet.[11]

[Edit]Eating the Right Nutrients

  1. Get biotin in your diet from things like eggs, meat, and avocados. Biotin is important for healthy nails, skin, and hair, and it may improve the health of your nails after they've been damaged by acrylics. Most meats are a good source of biotin, including fish. You can also eat nuts, sweet potatoes, spinach, and broccoli to get enough biotin.[12]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 12.jpg
    • If you're over 18, aim for 30 micrograms of biotin a day. A single egg contains 10 micrograms of biotin, while a pork chop or hamburger patty has 3.8 micrograms and of salmon has 5 micrograms.
    • With nuts and seeds, of sunflower seeds has 2.6 micrograms while the same amount of almonds has 1.5 micrograms.
    • If you feel like you're not getting enough biotin in your diet, ask your doctor if a supplement is a good idea for you.[13] Typically, a 2.5-milligram supplement is helpful.[14] While this is much higher than the daily recommended amount, you can consume as much as 50 milligrams a day without problems.
  2. Take a daily 10-milligram silicon supplement. Silicon can help repair your nails if they've become brittle after wearing acrylics. Look for one with choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA) and take it daily for at least 4 months.[15]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 13.jpg
    • Talk to your doctor before starting any supplement.
    • If you don't want to take a supplement, beer is one of the best natural sources of silicon. A single beer has 10 milligrams of silicon, so you can also get this nutrient that way. Always consume drinks in moderation, though.[16]
  3. Ensure you're getting enough protein in your diet.[17] To determine how much protein you need in a day, multiply your weight in pounds by 0.36 grams or your weight in kilograms by 0.8 grams. You can also use an online protein calculator.[18]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 14.jpg
    • For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, multiply that by 0.36 grams to get 54 grams of protein. If you weigh 90 kilograms, multiply that by 0.8 grams to get 72 grams of protein.
    • As a guide, a serving of tuna, salmon, or haddock the size of a deck of cards has 21 grams of protein while the same serving of turkey or chicken has 19 grams.
    • A single egg has 6 grams of protein, while 0.5 cups (81 grams) of cottage cheese has 14 grams and the same serving of cooked beans has 8 grams.
  4. Eat iron-rich foods such as red meat, leafy greens, and beans. An iron deficiency can lead to problems with your nails and hair, so make sure you are getting enough in your diet. Women who are 19-50 need 18 milligrams of iron a day, while all other adults need 8 milligrams.[19]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 15.jpg
    • Fortified breakfast cereals are one of the best sources of iron, as they contain 18 milligrams per serving. A serving of oysters or 1 cup (179 grams) of white beans both contain 8 milligrams of iron. Other good sources include dark chocolate, spinach, lentils, meat, and beans.
    • Talk to your doctor if you think you may have an iron deficiency, typically classified by fatigue, cold extremities, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, weakness, and brittle nails.[20]
  5. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, seeds, and nuts. Many vitamins and minerals support good nail health, so aim for a variety of foods in your diet. Eat a wide spectrum of fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains like whole wheat, quinoa, brown rice, bulgur, and buckwheat.[21]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 16.jpg
    • Aim for a variety of beans, seeds, and nuts as well!

[Edit]Using Acrylics Appropriately

  1. Ask a professional to remove your acrylics. Because acrylics require filing off, it's best down by a professional. They will cut off the tips, then mostly file the acrylic off of your nails. After that, they will soak your nails in acetone to completely remove the polish.[22]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 8 Version 4.jpg
    • Usually, they'll use a cuticle pusher to completely remove the acrylic at the end.
  2. Take breaks between acrylics. If you use acrylics continuously, your nails will likely suffer. Go at least a week before applying your next set of acrylics to give your nails time to strengthen again.[23]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 9 Version 4.jpg
    • Alternatively, use fake nails on special occasions only.[24]
  3. Opt for gels over acrylics to be kinder to your nails. If your nails have suffered from acrylics, switch to gels for a while. Some gels can be completely soaked off instead of filed down, making them less harsh on your nails.[25]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 10 Version 4.jpg
    • Also, gels bend more easily then acrylics, meaning they're less likely to crack your nails.
  4. Replace acrylics completely every 6 to 12 months. If you do leave your acrylics on, you should completely replace them at least once a year. That's because air pockets under acrylics can cause them to lift off, creating more damage to your nails.[26]
Help Your Nails Recover After Acrylics Step 11.jpg
    • Plus, removing them completely gives you a chance to provide extra care for your nails.

How to Open a Jammed Locker

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:00 AM PDT

A jammed locker is a nuisance and a time stealer, but you don't need to make yourself late. Most jams come from books, packages, and other things pressing against the lock. Knocking that item free is often enough to open up the average school locker. If your locker has a key lock, clean it before attempting to force it open. If you still can't open it yourself, call for help in order to retrieve what you left inside of the locker.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Opening a School Combination Locker

  1. Dial the combination more slowly than you did before. Before you practice your karate on the locker, make sure you put in the correct combination. Sometimes, when you're in a hurry, you might end up passing the numbers by too quickly. Remember, you turn the dial to the right, the left, and the right again, stopping at each number in the combination.[1]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 1 Version 3.jpg
    • Try the combination a few times. Sometimes you might put it in wrong without realizing it. Confirm that you have the right number before doing anything else.
    • If you do it slowly, you can be sure that you put in the right combination.
  2. Grab and pull the latch on the handle if you are able to see it. Look closely at the bottom of the handle where you usually put your fingers to tug open the door. Most dial lockers have a small latch that you have to push up. Even if you can only see a little bit of the latch, try using it to open the door. Push it up as far as it will go, then yank the door back toward you.[2]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 2 Version 3.jpg
    • Sometimes this is enough for the door to come unstuck, but not always. If your locker is pretty full, for instance, you probably need to deal with something pushing against the lock.
  3. Shake the locker while pulling the handle. Use all of your muscles to give the locker a good tug. Rattle it around as much as you can without attempting to rip the door off its hinges. Shaking the door could knock over whatever is leaning on the lock.[3]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • The locker door may still not open. If it doesn't come open after you shake it, stop trying to force it open. You don't need to end up with a doorless locker.
  4. Slap the locker a few times around the lock. Jams usually happen when something falls onto the locking mechanism. Bop the locker to try and dislodge whatever is blocking it. Be gentle, though! Start with light hits and increase the amount of force you use, but don't put a dent in the door.[4]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 4 Version 3.jpg
    • If the locker still won't budge, try pounding on it like you're knocking on a friend's door. You could also give it a swift kick if no one's looking, but be gentle. The locker isn't a punching bag and hitting it as hard as you can won't help.
    • The last thing you need when dealing with a stuck locker is having someone jump out into the hallway and tell you you're responsible for the damage. Lockers are frustrating sometimes, but resist the temptation to haul back and kick yours!
  5. Put pressure on the locker with your knee while opening it. Prop your knee on the locker about ¾ of the way up to the lock. Doing this is a little awkward, but the pressure often gets the locking mechanism working again. While you have your knee planted on the door, put in your combination and lift up the latch on the locker's handle to open it.[5]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Keep your knee on the locker the entire time until you're ready to open it. Once you lift the latch, you can put your foot back on the ground.
  6. Ask a friend to grab and pull the locker with you. Together, you might be able to pull the locker open with force. Have your friend push the door or keep their knee on it while you work the lock. If it still doesn't open, try having everyone pull the locker forward at the same time. Everything you ever learned about teamwork might finally pay off when that stubborn door flies open.[6]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • You could ask one of your friends to knock on the locker as you attempt to pull it. With your combined force, you could break through almost any jam!
  7. Call a janitor for help if you still can't get the locker open. A lot of school lockers are old and stubborn. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask for it. School janitors deal with plenty of locker problems and have special tools for opening them. The janitor can also repair the locker if you happen to have one that gets jams often.[7]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Before looking for the janitor, go to your classroom and tell your teacher. Let them take care of it so you don't get in trouble for being late. Who knows, you might get to share a book with that friend you wanted to talk to in class!
  8. Clear out the space near the lock once you open the locker. Many jams come from full or messy lockers. Organizing your locker can help you keep it from jamming again. Cleaning isn't the most fun thing when you're ready to race home after school, but at least stack your books straight so nothing falls on you when you open the locker door.[8]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • A lot of school lockers are old, so they don't work as well as you want them to. Any weight that presses against the lock could cause it to jam, so don't let anything tumble onto it.
    • Locker organizers are a great way to keep your locker neat. Office supply stores often sell shelves that slide into your locker. Also, try hanging shelves and baskets.

[Edit]Fixing a Stuck Padlock

  1. Remove broken keys or anything else you see stuck in the lock. That horrible snap doesn't have to mean you're locked out forever. Inspect the key slot to see what is in there, and then spray plenty of penetrating oil into the lock opening. Reach in with a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull out the blockage. If you can't grab it with pliers, try catching it with a jagged tool like a scroll or jig saw blade.[9]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 9 Version 3.jpg
    • Check your broken key before working on the lock. If you only have the head of the key left, you probably managed to turn the lock a little bit. Use a screwdriver to turn the lock back to its starting position so it releases the key.
    • Try using a penetrating oil like WD-40. Keep the keyhole greased so the thing blocking it slides out as easily as possible.
  2. Spray a lubricant on the key if it doesn't turn in the lock. Most people never think of a lock as something that needs to be cleaned, but dirt can stop your locker from opening. The best lubricant to use is powdered graphite. Put some graphite in the lock's opening, then put your key in. Turn the key a few times to work in the lubricant and see if it allows you to open the door.[10]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • Powdered graphite is available at most hardware stores. It comes in a tube so you can easily squeeze it or spray it onto the lock.
    • If you're in a pinch, try a silicone-based lubricant like WD-40. It isn't the worst thing to try, but it can gum up the lock if you use it often.
  3. Heat the lock up to melt ice if you're in a cold area. Like how you feel frozen in the winter, your lock might freeze too. One of the easiest ways to fix a frozen lock is by spreading a little hand sanitizer on your key. Put the key in and turn it a few times to spread the hand sanitizer through the lock. If that doesn't work, you could also try getting a deicer from a hardware store.[11]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 11.jpg
    • Heat sources are good for melting the ice and preventing it from reforming. Since you probably can't move the locker, your options are limited. If you can find a place to plug in something like a hairdryer, point it at the lock and heat it for 2 or 3 minutes.
    • You could also try blowing on the lock. Your hot breath helps melt the ice, but this can take a while. Use a tube like a toilet paper roll to direct your breath onto the lock, then blow for 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Push the locker door in if you're able to turn the key. If you're sure that the lock is ready for use and you're able to turn the key, put pressure on the door. As you turn the key, apply firm but gentle pressure to it. You could also push against the door with your free hand. If the door still won't budge, also lift the key up as much as you can while turning it and pushing it toward the lock.[12]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 12.jpg
    • Lockers often get stuck when something hits the locking mechanism, such as a big package stuffed into a tiny space.
    • Sometimes this takes the pressure off of the lock so you can open the door.
  5. Call a service line if you're renting the locker. Some universities, jobs, and delivery services maintain lockers, for instance. You can usually get a stuck locker open by calling the person who assigned the locker to you. It's the equivalent of calling a janitor to deal with a bad school locker. Tell them that the locker is stuck and you need it opened.[13]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 13.jpg
    • For example, if you're trying to open a package delivery locker, go to the front office or contact whoever gave you the locker key. Look for a sticker with a customer service number or go onto the post office's website to find it.
  6. Have the locker fixed by a repair technician. Once you get the locker open, see if it looks rusty or damaged. Close the locker and try to open it again. If it gives you more trouble, tell the locker manufacturer. Ask them to fix the locker or even replace it with a better one so you're not stuck fighting with it every time you want to get your stuff.[14]
Open a Jammed Locker Step 14.jpg
    • Call the business responsible for maintaining the locker if you don't own it. Don't attempt to take it apart on your own.
    • Many jams are from items inside overstuffed lockers bumping up against the locking mechanism. All you have to do in this case is clean out the locker to prevent it from jamming again. If it jams repeatedly even after you try everything, you might need to get a new one.

[Edit]Tips

  • Try to find the source of the jam as you rattle the locker door. You can often hear where something is pushing against the door, then pound on that area to knock the obstruction free.
  • Keep your locker closed when you're not there. If you can't close the locker after opening it, take all of your items with you so no one takes them.
  • Janitors usually have special tools or keys to deal with jammed lockers, so ask for help!
  • If a jammed locker makes you late to class, tell your teacher or principal. They can keep you out of trouble or maybe even tell you to share a book with that friend you wanted to talk to in class.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Lockers are always someone's property, so don't go wild trying to kick open a stuck one. You could end up being held responsible for the damages.

How to Recycle Towels

Posted: 23 Oct 2019 01:00 AM PDT

Fabric is a great resource, even if it's a worn-out towel. Old towels have plenty of life left in them, so put them to good use to avoid waste. You could turn old towels into things to use around your house, including mats and clothing. If you don't need to save the cloth for yourself, cut it up and use for craft projects or for pets. Even if you have to cut away frayed ends, you can get more value out of a repurposed towel than you ever would have expected.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Repurposing Towels for Household Needs

  1. Repurpose towels into washcloths if they are still absorbent. Store-bought washcloths can be expensive, so save money by cutting old towels down to size. Choose a towel with a spot that isn't too worn so your washcloths still look fresh. Make a zigzag stitch or sew a hem either by hand or with a sewing machine to prevent the towel from fraying.[1]
Recycle Towels Step 1 Version 3.jpg
    • You could save a clean piece of a quality towel to use as a face cloth or a washcloth to hang in your bathroom.
  2. Use old towels as a way to clean dishes and household messes. Instead of messing up your good towels, put your old ones to work. Cut down bigger towels by removing the edges with pinking shears. Trim off any frayed edges as well. Then, set aside the towels to scrub gunk in your kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere else.[2]
Recycle Towels Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • If you need something thicker, stitch a pair of smaller washcloths together.
  3. Save towels for padding when you need to move something fragile. If you're making a big move to a new home, line boxes with towels for cushioning. Also, wrap plates, picture frames, and other breakables inside towels. The extra padding could mean the difference between something getting to your destination in one piece or in fragments. It also means you don't need to buy packing peanuts or rely on newspapers that could leave ink stains.[3]
Recycle Towels Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • Towels are also good for keeping things dry and absorbing spilled liquids. Keep an extra towel around for quick cleanup when you're on the go.
  4. Make reusable sanitary pads to save money on hygiene supplies. Use a regular sanitary pad to trace an outline on a few towels or pieces of cloth. You will need to cut 2 towels in the shape of the pad and stitch them together. Then, create the pad liner out of an absorbent towel. Stitch it onto the center of the pad to create something reusable and eco-friendly.[4]
Recycle Towels Step 4 Version 3.jpg
    • For instance, the liner is the long, oval-shaped pad that fits along the middle of the base cloth you stitch together. Find it on a regular pad to see where to place it on your handmade one.
    • Remember to wash the cloth pad with soap and water before using it. Cloth pads are reusable, so they are great for saving money and cutting down plastic waste.
  5. Use the towels as washable diapers if you have children. Cloth diapers are an inexpensive and eco-friendly hygiene option used in many parts of the world. You could fold a towel up into a diaper instead of cutting it. Another option is to cut a soft cloth like flannel into diapers and trim towels into pads. Sew a pad to the center of each cloth diaper to finish it.[5]
Recycle Towels Step 5 Version 3.jpg
    • Towels are great for padding thinner diapers since they are absorbent. They can also be cut to any size you need.
  6. Sew together cut towels to create a bath rug. Let your towels protect your feet from the cold bathroom floor. The easiest way to do this is by laying a pair of same-sized towels over one another and stitching the edges together. Try binding the seams with narrow pieces of fabric for strength and support. You could use different colors in order to make the coolest bath rug that matches with the rest of your bathroom.[6]
Recycle Towels Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • Try making a patchwork rug by cutting towels into squares or stripes and sewing them together.
    • Another option is to cut towels into -wide strips, then use them to create a circular mat. Stack 3 strips, sew them together at one end, and pin each strip so they are like tubes. Twist the tubes around one another until the mat is the size you want.[7]

[Edit]Constructing Clothing and Accessories

  1. Make a swimsuit cover up out of a towel if you swim often. Get a pair of beach towels that are as long as your body. Lay them on top of one another, then sew the seams with straight stitches. Keep the robe relatively loose so it rests comfortably on you when you put it on. When you're done, cut a couple of straps out of a towel or another fabric to stitch to the cover up.[8]
Recycle Towels Step 7 Version 3.jpg
    • You can take some liberties to design the cover up any way you want. For example, cut curves into the top of the towels to create a deeper neckline. You could also cut a towel to make a sash to tie across your waist.
    • If a regular beach towel is too big for you, try folding a single towel in half and making the cover up out of it. You may need to resort to smaller bath towels to make cover ups for children.
  2. Use a towel turban for speedier hair drying. Wet hair gets unruly, so wrangle it with a light towel. Drape the towel over your head, pinching it between your fingers. Then, twist the end of the towel around until you reach your forehead. Finish the wrap by tucking the twisted portion underneath the part of the towel covering the back of your head.[9]
Recycle Towels Step 8 Version 3.jpg
    • This is a great way to get more use out of a worn towel. Hide it in your closet and pull it out when you need it. Towel turbans help dry your hair but let you continue on with the rest of your routine while you wait.
  3. Make comfortable towel slippers to keep your feet warm. Look for towels with a pattern you like to use for the fabric. Trace your foot size on a towel a few times, cut out the shapes, and stack them to create a thick sole. Stuff it with foam to make the sole more supportive. Then, make a cutout for the top of your foot and sew it to the sole to complete the slipper.[10]
Recycle Towels Step 9 Version 3.jpg
    • Use stuffing or batting from a craft store to make the slippers fuller and softer. Try stuffing the soles for cushioning.
  4. Create a patchwork tote bag for something reusable. Make a basic bag by cutting a towel into 2 identical pieces and using a sewing machine to hem and sew them together. Add handles by cutting smaller strips from the towel and sewing them onto the open end of the bag. You can then add any decorations you want, such as by painting it or using a hot glue gun to glue on rhinestones.[11]
Recycle Towels Step 10 Version 3.jpg
    • Customize your bag by using different colors of cloth. Also, try cutting and sewing on decorations for other towels or lining the inside of the bag with fabric.
    • Adjust the size of the bag by using different towels. Take advantage of an old beach towel to make a big bag to carry beach gear when you're out enjoying summer weather, for instance.

[Edit]Turning Old Towels into Crafts

  1. Shred old towels if you need a fabric stuffing for projects. Instead of spending money on new stuffing, cut up your old towels into small squares. Remove the hems first with a sharp pair of scissors. Make the squares or smaller to fit them inside your project. They are great for pillows, cushions, bean bags, stuffed animals, and other crafts.[12]
Recycle Towels Step 11 Version 3.jpg
    • For example, towels are very handy as quilt batting. Quilt batting is normally stuffed between layers of fabric for heaviness and warmth.
    • If you don't wish to cut up a towel, you could try rolling it up. Cut-up towels are better since the pieces are softer like the kind of polyfill you would get from a craft store. However, rolled towels are useful in a pinch, such as when you need a makeshift pillow.
  2. Make a boo boo bunny toy if you have children. A boo boo bunny is a cute way to cheer children up when they get hurt. It involves folding a towel in half to form a triangle and then rolling it up. Fold the rolled tube in half, tie the ends together, and then decorate them to create your bunny. You can then slip an ice cube into the towel to take the sting out of bruises.[13]
Recycle Towels Step 12 Version 4.jpg
    • Bunnies are simple to make, but your imagination doesn't have to stop there. For example, you could fold towels into different shapes to create elephants and other animals. It's like origami except with reusable material.
    • Another option is to cut shapes out of the towel and sew them together. It's a great way to make dolls. Try building a cat and stuffing it with polyester fiberfill from a craft store, for instance.
  3. Roll a towel into a draft stopper to insulate a cold home. Keep your heating bill down by blocking cold wind seeping under doors and windows. To make a draft stopper, measure the width of your door or window, then get towels longer than them. Roll the towels up together, securing them with pieces of yarn or string. Set the draft stopper next to the door or window to seal out drafts.[14]
Recycle Towels Step 13 Version 3.jpg
    • For a better-looking draft stopper, cut a fabric like fleece and fold it to form a tube. Stuff it with the towels and sew it shut. You could use patterned fabric or old pillowcases so you aren't looking at a couple of old towels laying around your house.
  4. Make a cement planter if you need a container to grow plants. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and mix together 2 parts cement with 1 part peat moss and 1 part perlite. Then, mix in water until the cement turns into a smooth paste like peanut butter. Add the old towel next, swirling it in the cement until it is saturated. Finish by setting the towel out to dry in sunlight for up to 7 days until it hardens.[15]
Recycle Towels Step 14 Version 3.jpg
    • Drape the towel so it hardens into the shape you desire. For example, try draping towels over buckets to form tall, thin planters.
    • After the planter dries, consider painting it before filling it with soil. Use an acrylic primer and a masonry paint, which are available at most hardware stores along with cement mixes.

[Edit]Using Towels for Pets

  1. Twist towel strips into a toy if you have pets that like to chew. There is no need to buy a knot toy that your dog will shred as soon as you get it home. Instead, cut up a towel into strips about wide. Tie the ends of the strips together in knot. Wrap the loose ends of the strips together to create braids, then knot the other end to complete the toy.[16]
Recycle Towels Step 15 Version 3.jpg
    • Towels can also be used as toys or bedding for rabbits, ferrets, rats, and other animals. Stick with a natural fiber like cotton instead of a synthetic one like nylon. Towels are safe to chew on, but take them away if you suspect your pet is eating them.
    • Making a toy is simple and your pet probably won't mind that it didn't come from a store. You can adjust the toy's size by cutting larger or smaller strips from the towel.
  2. Build animal bedding to give your pet something to rest on. Stack a pair of towels, sew them together, and stuff them to make a simple bed that works well for even large dogs. Another option is to get a pillowcase and fill it with shredded towels before sewing it shut with a whip stitch. If you're looking for something simpler, place the towels in spots where your pets like to sleep so less fur ends up on your furniture.[17]
Recycle Towels Step 16 Version 3.jpg
    • If you're preparing bedding for smaller animals, make sure you use a fleece towel. Other types of towels fray, making them dangerous for rats, mice, guinea pigs, and hamsters. Your pet could chew on the towel or get its nails stuck in the fabric.
  3. Use towels as a reusable way to line cages. Newspaper liners get messy, so try using a towel instead. Pets like dogs and cats could use the towels as blankets. An absorbent towel is also great for cleaning up any accidents. You can then wash the towel in your sink to reuse it or throw it away when you no longer need it.[18]
Recycle Towels Step 17 Version 2.jpg
    • Use towels to line bird cages, for example. Bird owners go through plenty of newspapers while keeping cages clean. Towels are also useful for covering a cage to calm a bird and help it sleep.
    • Keep in mind that fraying towels could be harmful to pets when their nails get caught in them. Try trimming off frayed edges and sewing on a hem. Also, don't use towels if your pet might eat them.
  4. Hold and dry pets with a towel after giving them a bath. Owners make use of fluffy towels, but there is no reason pets can't enjoy them too. Fluff your pet up to keep them warm once they hop out of the water. Towels are also useful for giving your pet a safe shelter if they are scared and a cushion for your fingers if they might bite or scratch during the grooming process.[19]
Recycle Towels Step 18 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, rodents like having a towel to hold onto and hide under. Pets like hamsters and birds have powerful bites, so use a towel as a shield.
  5. Donate towels to animal shelters if you no longer need them. Veterinarians and animal shelters are always in need of towels. Call around to see which places are in need of towels at the moment. Towels go toward lining cages, cleaning up, washing animals, and many other uses. These are also ways to take care of your own pets repurposing towels you otherwise wouldn't have a use for.[20]
    Recycle Towels Step 19.jpg
    • If animal shelters aren't your cause, ask other nonprofit groups or churches. There are many ways for them to use towels, such as rags for car wash fundraisers.

[Edit]Tips

  • Towels with gasoline, solvents, and other chemicals can't be recycled. Instead, contact your local government to locate the nearest hazardous waste disposal center and let them handle it.[21]
  • Most projects made from towels can be made with old clothing, upholstery, and many other fabrics. You could also buy new towels if you don't mind cutting into them.
  • Wash towels with a perfume-free detergent before donating them and use white vinegar or baking soda as a fabric softener.

[Edit]Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Pinking shears
