HP Launches Spectre x360 Convertible to Take on Macbook Air, Lenovo Yoga

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 07:58 PM PST

HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 laptopSpectre x360 is now available from the company's website

For a number of years, members of the PC master race looked to the Macbook Air with envy, even though most of us knew deep down that we just weren't meant to be and there could be no platonic bond between the two of us. Wintel and their PC-making chums obviously took note of this lust at some point and what was initially a trickle of pretenders (remember all those "Air killers"?) soon became a cascade of contenders. Adding to that deluge of ultrabooks and ultra-thin convertibles, Hewlett-Packard has announced the Spectre x360, a 13.3-inch Broadwell-powered device designed in collaboration with Microsoft.

Equipped with a CNC aluminum chassis, the Spectre x360 is just 15.9mm thick and tips the scales at 3.3 pounds. It's as acrobatic as it's sturdy. It has a 360-degree rotatable screen to enable the user to alternate between "notebook mode for work, stand mode for viewing entertainment, tent mode for touchscreen entertainment, or tablet mode for on the go."

HP is claiming 12.5 hours of battery life on a single charge, a feat it attributes to the use of its proprietary Panel Self Refresh (PSR) technology at least as far as models with the Quad HD display (2,560x1,440) are concerned. PRS, the company says, causes parts of the computer to power down after a period of inactivity while leaving the image on the screen intact.

Regardless of whether you opt for a full HD model or a Quad HD model, you will get a touch panel that is optically bonded to the display.

Given below is an excerpt from the press release listing all currently available Spectre x360 configurations:

  • HP Spectre x360 with Intel Core i5 Processor, Full HD touchscreen display, 4GB LPDDR3 system memory and a 128GB SSD is $899.99.
  • HP Spectre x360 with Intel Core i7, Full HD touchscreen, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD is $1149.99.
  • HP Spectre x360 with Intel Core i7, Quad HD touchscreen, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD is $1399.99.
