MSI Takes Stab at Bare Bones PC Market with Nightblade

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 12:51 PM PST

MSI NightbladeA small form factor skeleton with one-touch overclocking

MSI seems to have its hands in quite a few different cookie jars, which now includes bare bone PCs for gamers. The new MSI Nightblade is a small form factor (SFF) setup with an MSI Gaming Z87I motherboard, 600W power supply, and Dragon case fan. Your job is to drop in a CPU, graphics card, storage, optical drive, and you're ready to game -- and you can overclock using MSI's OC Genie Button on the front of the chassis.

The foundation of the Nightblade is its LGA 1150 motherboard. It supports up to 16GB of DDR3-3000 RAM and has onboard 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Though the Nightblade is a mini-ITX setup, the board supports ATX graphics cards, and MSI says there's room enough for two of them in there.

You can also install up to two SSDs and one HDD. Other features include six USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, HDMI output, DisplayPort, eSATA, E2200 Killer Gigabit LAN, a Clear CMOS button, and a few other odds and ends. If you're the LAN party type, you'll also enjoy the front-side handle that makes transport a breeze.

Look for the Nightblade to be available later this month starting at $599, which will also include a SteelSeries Siberia V2 Dragon headset.

Razer Builds a Mechanical Switch Designed Specifically for Gaming

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 12:17 PM PST

Razer GreenRe-engineering the mechanical switch

People are always talking about not having to reinvent the wheel, but what if the purpose of the wheel changed? It's an admittedly rough analogy to what Razer has done, which is try to reinvent the mechanical switch. According to Razer, all mechanical switches up to this point have been designed for typing, whereas the new Razer Mechanical Switch was purpose-built for gaming applications.

"Instead of focusing solely on typing comfort, as traditional mechanical switches have done, we had to completely rethink the conventional approach behind the actuation and reset points of mechanical switches in order to fine-tune them for gaming," says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director. ""Our engineers' focus for the specification was on speed, accuracy and durability to bring the unfair advantage to gamers worldwide. The new switch makes the most popular gaming keyboard in the world even better."

There are lots of mechanical switch types out there, though Razer contends its own is a different breed. How so? According to Razer, its team of engineers were able to identify the optimal actual distance for a gaming switch to a fraction of a millimeter, and they reduced the distance between the actuation and reset point by almost half, for faster and more precise gaming commands.

Razer built two types of switches -- the Razer Green that is tactile and clicky with a required force of 50g to actuate, and the Razer Orange that is also tactile but silent, requiring a force of 45g to actuate. Both types are available on the new Razer BlackWidow family of mechanical keyboards. Razer's also making the switches available to third-party peripheral makers.

Psst, Developers, CUDA 6 Release Candidate is Now Available to Download

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 08:28 AM PST

CUDA BlocksUnified memory is one of the bigger feature additions to CUDA 6

It's been a little more than two years since Nvidia decided to open source its CUDA platform, and with the latest release, Nvidia says it's made improvements to parallel programming, as well as made it faster and easier for developers to create next generation applications. Towards those goals, the CUDA 6 Release Candidate that's now available comes with several new features.

One of the biggest is unified memory support. Using CUDA 6, applications can access CPU and GPU memory without needing to manually copy data from one to the other.

"This is a major time saver that simplifies the programming process, and makes it easier for programmers to add GPU acceleration in a wider range of applications," Nvidia stated in a blog post announcing the release.

Other feature highlights include drop-in libraries that can automatically accelerate BLAS and FFTW calculations by replacing the existing CPU-only BLAS and FFTW library with a new GPU accelerated equivalent, and multi-GPU scaling. Nvidia also packed in a full suite of programming tools, GPU-accelerated math libraries, documentation, and programming guides.

You can check out the Release Notes (PDF) for a full list of changes and then grab the appropriate download from Nvidia's Developer Zone page.

Surprise! Getty Images Gifts the Web 35 Million Photos to Embed for Free

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 07:46 AM PST

PhotographyThey say a picture is worth 1,000 words, though if you post a copyrighted image without the owner's consent, it can actually be worth more than that. Much more. One of the most difficult parts about running a frequently updated website or blog is finding amusing images that are legal to use (hello, Creative Commons!). However, it's about to get a lot easier thanks to Getty Images, the world's largest photos service. In a surprise move, Getty Images is freeing up around 35 million photos from its collection spanning over a hundred years so that websites and bloggers can post them without getting smacked in the face by a lawsuit.

These images will not contain a watermark, though people who post them will need to use Getty's Embedded Viewer tool and abide by the company's Terms of Use.

"You may only use embedded Getty Images Content for editorial purposes (meaning relating to events that are newsworthy or of public interest). Embedded Getty Images Content may not be used: (a) for any commercial purpose (for example, in advertising, promotions or merchandising) or to suggest endorsement or sponsorship; (b) in violation of any stated restriction; (c) in a defamatory, pornographic or otherwise unlawful manner; or (d) outside of the context of the Embedded Viewer," Getty Images states.

Images that are free to use can change at any time, and if they do, users agree to remove images upon request. That said, the process of finding and posting a Getty Image is rather simple -- all you have to do is type in what you're searching for on the Getty Images website. Once you find an image, click its embed icon from the search results or image details page, copy the embed code, paste it into the source code for your website, and publish. While there won't be a watermark, there will be a footer underneath the photo giving credit (and linking back to) Getty Images.

Microsoft Plans to Detail DirectX 12 at GDC 2014

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 07:05 AM PST

DirectX 12 LogoDon't go shoveling dirt on DX12's grave

It's been nearly three and a half years since Microsoft last released a major version of its DirectX API, followed by a few point releases between then and now. However, if you feared DirectX was essentially done, you can sigh a breath of relief knowing that's not the case. As a new DirectX 12 (DX12) Twitter account exclaims, "Rumors of our demise have been greatly exaggerated...." Not only that, but DX12 is only two weeks away.

Microsoft created the special Twitter account and also put up a teaser page on its MSDN blog. Next to a giant DirectX 11 box, it says, "Join us at GDC March 20, 2014 10:00am." Underneath the text are logos for AMD Radeon Graphics, Intel, Nvidia, Qualcomm Snapdragon, and Windows.

One of the sessions that's scheduled for GDC is "DirectX: Direct3D Futures," which will be presented by Max McMullen, head of the Windows Graphics team. According to the description, McMullen will discuss how future changes to Direct3D will enable next generation games to run faster, as well as how future improvements will allow developers an unprecedented level of hardware control. He'll also talk about reducing CPU rendering overhead across a broad ecosystem of hardware, which could tie in with Qualcomm's involvement here.

DirectX 12 Teaser

In any event, stay tuned -- we'll have more in a couple of weeks when DirectX 12 is officially unboxed!

Norrathian Notebook: What EQN Landmark's business plan says about you

As surely expected by all involved, EverQuest Next Landmark's proposed business plan ruffled a few feathers. After all, it's a given that you can't please everyone. And also just as expected, some folks are crying foul; you can't have SOE say boo without someone screaming doom and gloom. But has the studio laid a big goose egg with this monetization plan? I say nope. It may appear a little scrambled in an aspect or two, but the majority of it seems to sit pretty well with players.

In a nutshell, the strategy as currently outlined focuses on selling cosmetic items like outfits and pets, shortcuts (like potions, paying upkeep, and renting market space at the hubs), additional claim flags, claim music/sound packs, and raw materials. We know what the actual plan itself says because it was posted front and center on EQN Landmark's alpha forums, which are viewable by the public. But instead of dissecting what the plan is, today I'll focus is on what it says. It's more than just the sum of its words; the plan says something about SOE. And did you know the plan also says something about you?

The City of Titans team posted an update to its Kickstarter page yesterday. You might recall that The Phoenix Project aims to create a spiritual sequel to City of Heroes, and to that end Missing Worlds Media managed to more than double its initial $320,000 fundraising goal.

The latest status update reveals that the devs are deep into pre-production. "It is not the most exciting time -- it doesn't result in much to show. What it does do is save time and help to bring a better product at the end," according to new Missing Worlds president Nate "Doctor Tyche" Downes. Also of note is the election of a five-member board, which you can read about via the links below.

If you've yet to watch this week's episode of Wingman's Hangar (or any episode of Wingman's Hangar, for that matter), number 59 features plenty of interesting nuggets for Star Citizen fans. Nearly half of the show's 32-minute running time is devoted to the space sim's ship damage states, and Cloud Imperium shares plenty of behind-the-scenes footage on the creation process as well as a roundtable discussion featuring the principal designers.

Lead ship modeller Chris Smith says that the Hornet alone has 100 different states. "We wanted a lot of fidelity, kind of movie-like breakup on these ships with lots of little pieces," he explains.

        Pathfinder
The Goblinworks team has this evening posted several bits of news about its forthcoming sandbox, Pathfinder Online. The studio has revamped its website and opened a new store it's calling the Goblin Squad Store, a "portal for merchandise that is currently only available to Goblin Squad members." The store appears to be a way for would-be backers to toss some (or more) cash at the developers even though the Kickstarter has ended. In return, gamers can select from a lengthy list of add-ons both physical and digital, including tabletop miniatures, forum titles, gametime, and even a swanky messenger bag.

If you're keen more on learning about the game than on funding it, the team's new video blog might be of more interest. The first of planned biweekly episodes went live tonight and features Goblinworks' Lee Hammock and Stephen Cheney explaining how slots and divine powers work in the game. We've embedded the vid behind the cut.

The fantasy sandbox canceled its initial Kickstarter campaign because it "failed in showing its true potential," according to a news posting on the ToA website.

At least she's not a submerged black-haired Japanese girl in a white robe. That'd be several extra kinds of creepy.
It's always the seemingly innocent ones. At a glance, SMITE's Scylla looks just like a pleasant little girl. It's only when you get into battle with her that she starts summoning her wolf-headed tentacles and you realize how inhuman she really is. Of course, you could also take Scylla for a spin yourself and learn to utilize her unassuming appearance and her varied snaring tactics to avoid being on the receiving end of a wolf-headed tentacle beatdown.

Scylla's passive ability improves her magical power for each max rank ability as well as an additional effect on max rank abilities. Her skills allow her to snare targets, spawn sentry locations and teleport to them, and transform into a lethally powerful form with massive attack power for one attack. You can jump past the break to see Scylla's abilities in action and watch some of her most useful options in group play.

The video's got one of those, and it leads into a destructibles discussion that's centered around the latest upgrades. Tank pilots can now punch through houses and watch them fall apart in real-time, and brick walls will even crack along the brickwork joints.

In other Wargaming news, World of Warplanes' 1.2 update is now live in Russia, with a western release scheduled for March 6th. Changes include an overhauled post-battle screen with detailed combat stats, built-in recording capabilities, and a new matchmaker system that should allow rookies to improve without competing against veteran pilots.

Superheroes of the world, stop moving around so much! This is the cry of Valiance Online's creators, who said that they are rooting players during combat to achieve "a familiar feeling" in the game.

This is just the tip of a new postberg in which the devs talk about plans for upcoming combat testing. Valiance Online will be doing a stripped-down pass of the game in the near future that will allow players to level from 1 to 50 in one of 10 different archetypes. However, the devs warn players to expect unbalanced powers, gimped powersets, and a complete lack of secondary powersets during the test.

"Our first pass will be all about inclusion, and not so much about balance, so don't be surprised if you find the majority of the powers to be a bit unsatisfactory in regards to balance. The balancing pass is planned for later patches," the devs said.

Valiance Online is one of the self-proclaimed spiritual successors to City of Heroes.

The new guns include the Caldari Bolt Pistol, a high-DPS, small-clip handgun; the Caldari Magsec SMG, a semi-automatic with higher damage than other SMGs; and the Gallente Ion Pistol, a plasma-shooting beast that punches right through enemies' armor and shields.

The devs said that they will be tweaking time-to-kill in 1.8 by reducing the power of high-level damage modifiers, taking one grenade away from what players could previously hold at a time, reducing base damage for several weapons, and applying weapon proficiency skill bonuses against either shields or armor.

If you've merely puttered around The Elder Scrolls Online on a beta weekend, you might not have realized the game boasts a robust crafting system to allow players to make their very own pointy sticks and other implements of blood and battle. A post on the official ESO site today shows off some of these crafted items and explains how different racial styles are achieved. Says the post,
Smiths in Tamriel add their own personal touches to every weapon, shield, and piece of armor they forge, from choosing a racial style to imparting special bonuses they've learned called traits. Master blacksmiths, clothiers, and woodworkers can take ordinary arms and armor and, with the right materials, transform them into equipment worthy of a true hero.

In the past, you chose mostly everything for the column's writer to do in a particular game (that you also chose). We've decided to streamline the process and make it more of a three-part "review" of sorts with a fourth part set aside for voting. I will select the game to prevent the recent problems we've had with cheating, and you will choose my path within it. That means there will be one week of voting and three weeks of my impressions of those choices for each game.

So let's go ahead and get into the polls for this PlanetSide 2 edition of Choose My Adventure.

            FFXIV
Face it: You have gone far too long without seeing a giant chicken's giant butt.

Happily, Square Enix has your well-being in mind, for the studio has posted a preview of an upcoming Final Fantasy XIV mount that is brimming with chunky avian posterior visuals. A brief and bizarre post on the official site introduces "Fat Chocobo," a special mount that would rather not move unless it has food comically dangled in front of its beefy face.

The chocobo mount is confirmed as a special goodie for those who order the PlayStation 4 collector's edition of FFXIV as well as those who have purchased one of the other CEs. No word as of yet what the studio will do to compensate players if said mount collapses after taking six rapid steps in succession.

Leaderboard: Are you concerned about Elder Scrolls Online's PvP focus?

            Elder Scrolls Online PvP
The Elder Scrolls Online is a fascinating MMO for a number of reasons. There's the obvious triple-A budget and mega-popular IP, but apart from that the game appears to feature highly customizable skill-based character progression and curiously, a heavy focus on player-vs.-player combat.

We say curiously because prior to ESO, the Elder Scrolls series went to great lengths to immerse players in you're-the-savior-of-the-world storylines, which on some level are incompatible with competitive multiplayer PvP.

So, how about it, Leaderboard readers? Are you concerned about ESO's PvP pedigree, or are you OK with the IP branching out in new directions? Vote after the cut!

Ever wish that you could put to rest a long-standing MMO debate once and for all? Then welcome to the battle royal of Massively's Leaderboard, where two sides enter the pit o' judgment -- and only one leaves. Vote to make your opinion known, and see whether your choice tops the Leaderboard!

              10 TRANSFORM 20 ROLL OUT
It's been a long wait for Transformers Universe hopefuls. The game has gone from MMO to MOBA to MOTA (which is still sort of a MOBA), its release date has been pushed back, and hopeful players could be forgiven for increasingly not expecting the game to ever come out. A new post on the official site confirms, however, that the game is approaching its next beta test in the very near future.

Players who hope to be taking part in the beta are asked to fill in their computer specifications, giving the development team valuable information about the game's performance on various machines. They should also keep a close eye on their email inboxes; beta invitations will be sent out based in part upon the specifications filled in on the official site. So keep the faith, and before long you too could be swapping forms and blowing up other Transformers all over the place.

RIFT previews its new soul, the Liberator

Well how do you think a healing sword works? Magic?
The new souls being added to RIFT in the game's 2.7 patch are meant to allow every class to perform every single role in the game. So how will that even work? What will Warriors with heals really look like? You could wait until tomorrow to find out on the official site... or you could take a look at MMORPG.com's preview of the new soul, the Liberator, along with a small sample of its associated lore.

Liberators aren't meant to be passive healers; the soul specializes in wading into the fray while sporting excellent group and area heals. In other words, it's still very much a Warrior occupation, but the focus is less upon hurting things and more upon using the energy of combat to help others recover. While the full explanation of the soul's specific abilities will be up tomorrow, you can still get a taste of the lore and concept by looking at the preview.

Ubisoft teases more screenshots for Tom Clancy's The Division
News about the MMO shooter Tom Clancy's The Division hasn't exactly been prolific in recent days. In fact, we haven't heard a peep of official news since December.

But thanks to MP1st, we have two new screenshots to to remind us that the game is in development -- and that it looks pretty good. Ubisoft released the latest shot of a soldier hunkered down on a New York City rooftop earlier today; the other shot gives us a glimpse of possible underground adventures. Check them both out beyond the break.
