Assassin’s Creed III PC Release Date Pushed Back To November 20th

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 10:14 AM PDT

Assassins Creed 3Okay so pushed back might be a bit of an exaggeration since it was never formally announced, however up until now we were told the PC release date would match those of the Xbox 360 and PS3. This has never been true in the past, but we played along. Turns out if you were one of the countless masses who expressed cynicism at this statement, you'd have been in the right.

The release date has been pushed to November 20th for North America, and November 23rd for those in the UK. The new date gives the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions almost a full month head start, with both editions planning to hit shelves for console players on October 31st. Ubisoft has never really done a good job of explaining why the PC version of their games are typically launched a month or more apart for the console versions, though many have theorized that it has something to do with piracy.

Anyone else have a theory?

Barnes & Noble Cut Nook Tablet Prices To Compete With Nexus 7

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 10:00 AM PDT

NookThey won't come right out and say it, but a recent price cut on the Nook Tablet family can only mean one thing, Nexus 7's are back in stock. The Barnes and Noble devices aren't even close to being the best Android tablet option out there these days, however for those invested in the B&N platform they are still a very capable device. Additionally, if reading is going to be your primary use for a tablet, these budget devices will fit the bill quite nicely.

Here is a full breakdown of the cuts:

The price of the Nook Color drops from $169 to just $149.

The Nook 8GB Tablet drops from $199 to $179.

The Nook 16GB Tablet drops from $249 to $199.

It's worth reminding users however that the lion share of spare capacity of these tablets have been reserved by the operating system for B&N content only, so if you are looking for a tablet that you can load up with your own content, the Nook probably won't be your best choice.

Apple Offered To License Patents to Samsung for $30 per Phone, $40 per Tablet

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 09:35 AM PDT

The Apple vs. Samsung saga has been unfolding at a rapid pace over the last few weeks, and several new developments about what went on behind the scenes is starting to emerge. According to court fillings, Apple considered Samsung a "strategic partner", and offered them the option to license key patents in order to restore peace between the two companies. "Samsung chose to embrace and imitate Apple's iPhone archetype," Apple said in an Oct. 5, 2010 presentation to Samsung. "Apple would have preferred that Samsung request a license to do this in advance. Because Samsung is a strategic supplier to Apple, we are prepared to offer a royalty-bearing license for this category of device."

According to a report by AllthingsD, Apple also offered to give Samsung a 20 percent discount if the company would cross-license its patent portfolio back to Apple. The documents also show Apple was interested in expanding the scope of what was covered to devices running the Symbian and Bada operating systems as well. In 2010, the year the settlement was proposed, Apple was seeking around $250 million in compensation. They also pointed out that the settlement was far less than what they were already spending with Samsung on components.

"Apple has identified dozens of examples where Android is using or encouraging others to use Apple patented technology," Apple said in the August 2010 presentation, which contained the headline "Samsung copying iPhone."

"Many more Apple patents are relevant to the Android platform," Apple said, outlining dozens of patents it believed were being infringed. "Apple has not authorized the use of any of these patents."

Obliviously Samsung didn't take the offer or they wouldn't still be duking it out in court. $250 million in 2010 however would probably only be a small fraction of what they would be earning as royalties these days since Samsung has the market cornered when it comes to non-iPhone Smartphones.

Microsoft Responds to Windows 8 Backlash From Game Developers

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 09:00 AM PDT

GFWLIn a recent interview, Valve CEO Gabe Newell took a few pot shots at Windows 8, and it didn't take long before Blizzard, Mojang, and several other high profile developers piled on. Most have stopped short of calling it a "catastrophe" the way Gabe Newell did, however most have made it clear they don't see much benefit for PC Gamers who are on the fence about upgrading. "If Microsoft decides to lock down Windows 8, it would be very, very bad for indie games and competition in general," said Minecraft creator and founder of Mojang, Markus "Notch" Persson. Microsoft's response's was a carefully worded statement attempting to restore confidence, however when terms like "Games For Windows Live" are used, we had to admit to being slightly skeptical.

According to Microsoft Windows 8 will offer built-in games and related achievements, and that Xbox Live is fully integrated into the OS. They once again re-affirmed their commitment to the Games for Windows Live brand, and that the future of the Xbox would be closely tied to Windows 8. "With Xbox on Windows 8, we created easy entry points into the types of entertainment that you'll enjoy, including games," a spokesperson told VentureBeat. "The Games app prominently features your avatar, profile, friends and Gamerscore and allows you to explore your friends' avatars." Users will also be able to buy games for their Xbox on the PC, and queue them for downloading on the console.

Microsoft's decision to try and bring the PC and Xbox closer together is an odd strategy, and one that could potentially backfire. PC and console gamers are very distinct communities, and it's a relatively small percentage of either side that has any desire to see the two mashed together.

It's worth pointing out that existing games should, at least in theory, run as well in Windows 8 as they did in previous versions. If you aren't interested in a "Modern UI" or the Xbox integration on the other hand, it probably won't offer current PC Gamers much in the way of useful new features.

Hello again, Massively readers and viewers! Did you enjoy the Mars Rover landing? By the time you read this, were you able to get some time outside to check out the Perseid meteor shower? No? That's OK because you were inside watching Massively TV, right? No?

All right, let's stay calm. Here's what I'll do for you, but just this once. I'm going to recap some of the best moments from the last week of livestreaming. I'll wrap them up in a nice package to save you some of the work. All you need to do is click past the cut, watch the streams and... hey! Stop looking at those meteors! Get back in here.

This week we had Blake returning with his Lunchtime Livecast, this time discussing the new Star Wars: The Old Republic transition to free-to-play. Next up, I took the mic and played some of The Kingdom of Loathing for Choose My Adventure. I jumped head-first into Dark Blood after that (with Outspark's help, of course) and followed it up with a revisit to Allods Online. Mike shot a lot of stuff in EVE Online, and Jeremy took us through another starter zone in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes in celebration of SOE's early free-to-play transition. MJ joined up and streamed some EverQuest II, a bit of DC Universe Online, The Secret World, and Aion. Voila! Instant entertainment!

The Daily Grind: Do you expect big news from this week's confluence of conventions?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Or maybe you'll just be gaming all of next week and won't realize until Friday that there was stuff going on this week. That might actually be more fun.
GDC Europe, GenCon Indy, and Gamescom all happening at the same time? It'd be completely unbelievable if it weren't happening right now. This week sees three major gaming conventions all taking place, and while all three are focusing on different areas of the gaming world, you can't focus on one while ignoring the others. That means that next week is going to be full of coverage of all three events, and if you've been following the convention calendar, you're no doubt eagerly anticipating this.

But will there be any major news? After all, sometimes these events don't produce news so much as a few interesting footnotes. With so much gaming concentrated in a single week, it would almost make more sense to wait until the ruckus has died down to make any big announcements. So do you expect big news from this week's convention extravaganza? Or do you expect a whole lot of noise and not a lot of signal?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Guild Wars 2 stress testing continues today

      Posted: 12 Aug 2012 05:30 AM PDT

I don't even remember what stress test this is from.
In a surprise move that absolutely no one could have anticipated, ArenaNet has announced another stress test for the soon-to-launch Guild Wars 2.

The test will run from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the 12th (today!). Like those before it, the test is open to those who have pre-purchased the game and characters, will not have been deleted. As in previous stress tests, the team is advertising that this test is, true to its name, designed to stress the servers. Players might experience features not working as intended, and that's par for the course.

Have fun if you make it into the game, and remember that this will hopefully make the real deal a much smoother experience for everyone in a mere 13 days.

The Tattered Notebook: Exploring identity with EQII's SOEmote

The Tattered Notebook EQII's SOEmote and New Voiceovers
This week, EverQuest II launched a new feature called SOEmote. It gives players the ability to use a webcam and create facial expressions for their avatars, but it also includes the ability to change your voice to match your character in voice chat. You wouldn't think that being able to raise and lower eyebrows, tilt your head, or sound like a pixie would match up well with killing orcs and looting treasures, but neither would home decorating, and yet it's become a very popular activity in game. Will SOEmote follow suit and be yet another outlet for player creativity, or is it just a gimmick? In this week's Tattered Notebook, we'll take a look at the new feature and give some first impressions about its potential.

The Mog Log: A bucket list before 2.0

The Mog Log header by A. Fienemann
Doom approaches Eorzea. It's nice to think that we as players won a temporary victory and a brief respite from that oncoming destruction, but let's face it: We all know from trailers and outside sources that it's just a momentary win. Cities will burn, lands will be razed, and the best we can hope for is that when we emerge once more, the world is a better place. Final Fantasy XIV is getting a lot of upgrades in version 2.0, but a whole lot of the game is going to be flushed away first.

How long do we have? The rest of the month, certainly. Most of September, probably. More than that? Dubious. So it's time to start making a bucket list for Eorzea-that-is before it becomes Eorzea-that-was, since we all know that a lot of things are changing by then. I'm not talking about finishing out the storyline missions; if you haven't already done that, then odds are you're not too concerned about doing so. I'm talking about the things you need to do in order to prepare for the end, stuff that you should start knuckling down and doing. Maybe some of it won't be necessary after all, but it's better to assume that the clock is running for you to take a last look.

SOE to stop offering expansions for Station Cash, offers 50% off this weekend

SOE to stop offering expansions for Station Cash, offers 50% off this weekend
In the wake of the initial removal of subscriptions from the Station Cash store, Sony Online Entertainment is giving players a heads-up about the impending removal of expansions and DLC packs. Starting on Monday the 27th, players will no longer be able to purchase any expansions for EverQuest or EverQuest II or DLC packs for DC Universe Online using Station Cash. The company explains that the change is due to the substantial cost of the content development, the need to protect revenue, and the competing desire to continue running player-loved Station Cash promotions.

Along with the notification, SOE is offering a 50% off sale on expansions and DLC packs from now through 2:59 a.m. EDT on Monday, August 13th. Players can take advantage of this offer with either cash or their saved SC, but only for this limited time. After that, all purchases will be cash-only.

[Thanks to Paul for the tip!]

The Road to Mordor: LotRO's next four expansions

          Posted: 11 Aug 2012 12:00 PM PDT

The Road to Mordor LotRO's next four expansions
With under a month to go until Riders of Rohan hits the digital starting gate and gallops past the horse metaphor, expansions are weighing heavily upon my mind. I'm excited about horse combat and a break from traditional questing (to a point), but I'm also hoping that Lord of the Rings Online's fourth expansion will prove far more compelling than its previous one turned out to be.

LotRO may be coasting into its middle-age years (in MMOs, every year in real life is like nine for the game), but it still has quite a bit of life -- and journey -- ahead of it. Unlike every other MMO out there, this title has a specific story it's following from beginning to end. Maybe we get off the beaten path of Tolkien's works now and then, but our fate as players is intertwined with the fates of Frodo and the One Ring. It gives us the advantage of knowing more about our future in the game than we would have otherwise.

So today I'm putting on my prognostication cap and giving you all the skinny on Lord of the Rings Online's next four expansions past Riders of Rohan. I have no insider knowledge, just a gut feeling and a time-traveling buddy named Soren from the year 2020.

John Smedley espouses PlanetSide 2's strengths and threeyear plan
"PlanetSide 2 -- what is it and why do I want to play it?," asks SOE President John Smedley in a recent LiveJournal post (yes, LiveJournal lives!). In a little over 3,000 words, Smedley attempts to make the case for why PlanetSide 2 is a genuine contender in both the MMO and FPS markets. "We're thinking about a game we plan to have running in 2025. Yeah. Really," he writes.

John Smedley's selling points on PS2 are as follows: It has a "very deep" certification system, the deepest team-based gameplay of any FPS, an immersive world, no end, a huge community, resourced-based gameplay and territorial control, and familiar gameplay. And it's free-to-play.

Smedley also opens up regarding SOE's three-year plan for PlanetSide 2, mentioning possible player-owned bases, harvestable resources, a seamless planet and water vehicles, NPC armies and enemies, e-sports support, and a Mac version.

Classic Gaming Expo 2012: Howard Phillips and Nintendo's Rise to Power

            Posted: 12 Aug 2012 12:15 AM PDT

If you cut your teeth on the Nintendo Entertainment System (not literally, I hope), the name "Howard Phillips" should sound familiar; he stood as the smiling American face of Nintendo's corporate monolith for a solid decade, and did everything from running the company's warehouse to editing Nintendo Power, in which he appeared as himself in comic form for several years. Phillips wasn't just a soulless PR lackey, though; the guy definitely knew his stuff, and Nintendo paid him in part to evaluate and master games -- hence the title "gamemaster" on his Nintendo business cards (he claims to have finished all 500 games that passed by him in his time with the company).

Now, if you're a crusty old fan of retro gaming like me, the story of Nintendo -- the parts not shrouded in secrecy, anyway -- has already been told hundreds of times; heck, my plane trip down to Vegas involved digesting a solid chunk of Jeff Ryan's Super Mario, which dished most of the dirt Phillips did himself during his brief speech. But Phillips did give a few brief anecdotes during the Q & A session of his panel, and while none of them will change your opinion on Nintendo significantly, his small collection of stories provided a unique perspective into a much different era of gaming.
