Verizon Wireless Reveals Semi-Hidden High End Shared Data Plans

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 10:19 AM PDT

In the wake of AT&T rolling out Mobile Share data plans that allow its subscribers to share up to 20GB of data per month across a swath of wireless devices, Verizon Wireless has come forward to say, 'Hey, our Share Everything plans also go up to 20GB!' Big Red unveiled half a dozen shared data plans back in June that ranged from 1GB for $50/month to 10GB for $100/month, but it turns out there were higher tiers available. Twice as many, in fact.

The upper tiers include:

  • 12GB for $110/month
  • 14GB for $120/month
  • 16GB for $130/month
  • 18GB for $140/month
  • 20GB for $150/month

Why go through the trouble of hiding and/or not making the upper tier plans obvious? VZW spokeswoman Brenda Raney explained to ComputerWorld that the upper tiers weren't initially posted on the company's website because "the majority of customers use under 2GB a month. Who would need 20GB?"

The idea that some users would want to use as much as 20GB per month wasn't lost on AT&T, which offers the following Mobile Share plans:

  • 1GB for $40/month
  • 4GB for $70/month
  • 6GB for $90/month
  • 10GB for $120/month
  • 15GB for $160/month
  • 20GB for $200/month

Both Verizon Wireless and AT&T charge additional fees per device, which makes all of these plans less attractive than they otherwise could be.

IHS iSupply: Mobile DRAM Market on Pace to Post Record Revenue

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 08:49 AM PDT

DRAM makers have been struggling with falling memory prices for a few years now, and at one point in 2008, Adata chairman Simon Chen declared the DRAM market was the worst it's been in 15 years. Fast forward to today and DRAM players have found their saving grace in the mobile sector. While PC memory is still dirt cheap, mobile DRAM is on a record pace in terms of revenue.

According to IHS iSupply, mobile DRAM will hit a record $6.56 billion in revenue this year, a 10 percent gain from $5.98 billion in 2011. That's also much higher than the 3 percent revenue growth predicted in the standard DRAM market.

"The mobile DRAM segment is achieving impressive growth as mobile operating systems, streaming apps and games require more memory to handle sophisticated tasks," said Ryan Chien, analyst for memory & storage at IHS. "Crucial features like multitasking, media decoding and decompression, data synchronization and background operations are all driving DRAM needs—and new phones and tablets are meeting those needs with their rise in mobile DRAM densities."

A side effect to this is that DRAM densities in mobile devices are getting bigger. The average DRAM density in smartphones, for example, increased from 2.28Gb (gigabits) in the second quarter of 2010 to 5.85Gb in Q2 of this year. In tablets, the average density jumped from 2Gb to 8.33Gb during the same time period, IHS iSupply says.

"The extraordinary accomplishment of mobile DRAM is in marked contrast to the performance of the other memory segments, including standard DRAM used in desktop and notebook computers. Owing to the lagging sales of PC computing behind handsets and tablets, revenue growth for standard DRAM this year is anticipated to be weak," IHS iSupply said. "And while mobile DRAM average selling prices have been falling over time in line with the overall memory space, prices remain relatively firm for mobile DRAM chips because of a number of factors, including high demand, a smaller supply base and healthy density growth."

More memory for less money while the mobile DRAM market still posts record revenue? That sounds like a winning scenario to us.

Microsoft's Windows 8 Retail Packaging and Box Art Pops Up Online

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 08:08 AM PDT

There are a million and one questions surrounding Windows 8. Is the world ready for a touch-friendly operating system? What will the user interface formerly known as Metro and temporarily referred to as "Windows 8 style UI" be called? Will Windows 8 kill the PC industry and drive a stake in the heart of PC gaming as we know it? Is it wrong for a vegetarian to eat animal crackers? That last one has nothing to do with Windows 8, we're just curious. Getting back on topic, there's is one thing we learned about Windows 8 today, and that's what the retail box art will look like.

The folks over at The Verge posted what they claim are renderings of the official retail packaging for Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro, which are the only boxed versions you'll ever find on store shelves. Windows 8 is identified by a bright white box and Windows 8 Pro by a darker grayish color, both of which sport the newly designed Windows logo in slim packaging.

Windows 8 is scheduled to go on sale to the general public starting October 26, 2012. That's also when OEMs will be able to sell PCs with Windows 8 pre-installed using the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) copies that went out a week ago today.

Game Developers Bash Microsoft's "Wrongheaded" Windows 8 Strategy

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 07:35 AM PDT

Valve's Gabe Newell appears to have struck a chord with other game developers in his criticism of Windows 8 as a "catastrophe for everyone in the PC space." He said Windows 8 will ultimately force some top-tier PC/OEMS out of the market, and not long after he made those comments, one of Blizzard's higher ups voiced his agreement saying Windows 8 is "not awesome" for his company, either. Now that the rally call is out there, game developers are coming out of the woodwork to say that they too are concerned with Microsoft's upcoming OS.

Brad Wardell at Stardock thinks Newell's assessment is "totally right," adding he hopes the market can somehow "adapt to the wrongheaded strategy Microsoft is employing with Windows 8," GamesIndustry.biz reports. Yikes!

Perhaps the pack mentality is starting to kick in, but at the end of the day, "there is some legitimate concern" with Windows, as noted by Dean Hall, creator of DayZ. Hall also indicated its too early to truly gauge the impact Microsoft's touch-friendly OS will have on the PC industry and, by association, PC gaming, but others were more outspoken with their criticism.

"I really hate the general concept of 'closing down' Windows, and this seems to be where Microsoft is intending to go," Chris Delay, lead designer at Introversion, told GamesIndustry.

Hall fears the day when "all Windows apps may have to be certified by Microsoft before they can be released and installed on users' computers. That just fills me with dread."

Apple Presents Internal Samsung Document as Evidence Galaxy S1 Copied iPhone

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 06:36 AM PDT

Apple this week pulled out what it hopes will be a trump card in its courtroom battle with Samsung over allegations that the rival device maker copied the look and feel of its iPhone and iPad devices. The supposed trump card is a 132-page internal Samsung document from 2010 in which the company directly compares the Galaxy S1's shortcomings to the iPhone in a variety of areas, with recommendations on how to improve them.

The document, which is uploaded to Scribd and first reported on by CNet,  covers nearly every aspect of the Galaxy S1 and is titled "Relative Evaluation Report on S1, iPhone." In it, Samsung said it discovered a total of 126 issues, the majority of which related to "basic functions." Seemingly trivial things like the fact that Samsung's Memo and Calculator apps weren't supported in landscape mode were compared against the iPhone in a series of side-by-side diagrams. From making calls to browsing the Web, as well as nearly two dozen items related to visual interaction effects, Apple's iPhone provided the better experience.

Samsung's document is by no means damning, however. There's no doubt Samsung will argue it was simply putting in the proper research by comparing its device against the iPhone.

Genius Imperator Keyboard Invites MMO and RTS Gamers to Walk the Plank

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 06:07 AM PDT

The smarty-pant folks at Genius today unveiled a professional gaming keyboard intended for massively multiplayer online (MMO) and real-time strategy (RTS) players. It's the Imperator, and it's the latest addition to the company's GX Gaming Series. Now available in the U.S. and Canada, the Imperator provides North American gamers with 6 programmable keys, three game profiles, the ability to assign up to 18 macros, and a UI to manage it all.

While you're harvesting resources or about to deal a death blow in a PvP battle, you won't have to worry about the Windows key interrupting the action if you accidentally press it, as it's deactivated during gameplay, Genius says. Other features including a 1000Hz report rate, 1ms response time, onboard memory to prevent APM (actions per minute) loss, media keys, and a 6-foot braided cable.

Perhaps the plank's main selling point is its price tag. With an MSRP of $50, it's one of the more affordable gaming keyboards around.

BlackBerry 10 Will Fail and Samsung Should Buy Research In Motion, Analysts Say

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 05:49 AM PDT

Research In Motion (RIM) has a lot riding on the release of BlackBerry 10, the upcoming mobile operating system that will power a new generation of devices. If all goes to plan, BB10 will thrust RIM back into relevance and save a company that's seen its share of struggles in recent times. More likely, however, BB10 will stand in the shadows of next-gen OSes from Google and Apple, and if that happens, Samsung's best bet is to acquire RIM, according to analysts with investment firm Jeffries.

In a report released on Tuesday, the analysts noted "significant potential" for BB10, recognizing it as "a vast improvement over BB7," eWeek.com reports. But, it won't be enough.

"We believe it is highly unlikely that it will be an improvement over iOS 6 and about equal to Android 4.1. Therefore, we see little chance RIM can take share away from Apple with BB10," the analysts stated in their report.

That doesn't bode well for RIM, obviously, but it could be a blessing in disguise for Samsung, which is in dire need of a viable software platform all of its own to go along with its successful hardware business. Towards that end, Jeffries believes Samsung has half a dozen options:

  1. Keep riding the Android gravy train
  2. Develop its own version of Android
  3. Develop a radically different version of Android
  4. Build its very own OS
  5. License BB10 from RIM
  6. Acquire RIM

Jeffries says it's a "lackluster list," but out of those options, buying RIM would be the best one. We're not sure we agree, though it's certainly an interesting proposition with plenty of potential upside, and an equal amount of risk.

What do you think, should Samsung look at acquiring RIM?

By Daniel Dalton

Let Us Begin!

The focus of Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars is to build a base and expand while protecting yourself from the hostile parties around you. When you choose your faction you are asked to pick a sector of the map where your first base will be (it doesn't really make a difference where you go, but the choice is nice).

53533 500x375 image028

A Whole New World

You might be overwhelmed coming into a screen like this but the game does a good job of assimilating you into everything through its innovative tutorial. You're taught the in-game mechanics and basics through a series of quests while simultaneously building your base up. Before you know it you're ready for your first conflict.

53529 500x375 image023

Who’s Next?

You are tasked to destroy a nearby Forsaken (an NPC enemy) camp with your newly developed army. It's an easy job and they're soon done with. New Forsaken camps pop up around your area periodically and you are encouraged to go out and exterminate them when you have the resources available to do so. Through fighting the Forsaken you are given an insight to how the PvP system of the game works. Every player has offensive and defensive capabilities. To attack another player you must first destroy whatever defensive set-up he has going on. It is very much a case of rock-paper-scissors. Infantry defence are hard countered by vehicle offense, which in turn can be countered by certain units. This keeps the PvP dynamic, there's no one unit that is the answer to everything. In order to succeed at the higher levels one must scout his or her target and build the right unit to exploit the weaknesses in their defence. A target whose defence primarily consists of MG Nests (anti-infantry cannons that are also good against air) can be countered effectively by massing ground infantry units.

53528 500x375 image022

The Calm Before The Storm – Rally The Troops

The incentives to attacking other people, apart from showing your superiority, are the spoils of the battle. You can plunder Tiberium from your enemies, the driving force of the C&C world that is used to make everything and anything. However, there are also  three other almost redundant resources, Crystal, Energy and Credits. The primary way you get these resources is harvesting them from your home base. Harvesters can be placed on Tiberium and Crystal fields to collect the respective resources. Power Plants are placed next to resource fields to collect Energy. Credits are farmed from Refineries. The Silo determines how much Tiberium and Crystal you can stock up before you have to use it. The game keeps you coming back to regularly collect your resources because each Harvester or Power Plant can only stockpile a certain amount of Tiberium or Energy before you have to manually collect them to continue production.

53521 500x375 image018 2

So… What Now?

After you're all set up the game loses a lot of its pace. There is only so much you can do in one sitting before you have to return another time to collect more resources and utilise them in building more of the same thing. Some people appreciate a slower paced game, others not so much. After a while I found myself wondering, "What now?" I realised all I would be doing is more of the same stuff. Collect more resources, get more army units, attack more people. After completing one quest which tasked ten skirmishes against The Forgotten I was excited to see what my next quest would be.

53512 500x375 image012 2

This Again?

There is no sense of progression when you are only doing more of the same. This would be alright if the PvP was competitive and there was actually some kind of strife between players. However, there isn't. It's one extreme or the other. Either you're on your own without an Alliance (guild) and you cannot get out of the rut that other players leave you in through constant harassment or you join the largest Alliance in your region and you as a collective dominate completely. Smaller Alliances have no chance of getting a one up over the bigger, already established ones because of how the system works. The end result is you find servers where there is one Alliance reigning supreme over everything else and there is no competition between the players. The only people left are the ones in the Alliance or those who get frustrated and leave eventually.

53500 500x375 image004 2

Final Verdict: Fair

While the interface is very user friendly and the tutorial does a good job of getting you into the game, once you actually get there you come to realize there isn't all that much to do. The gameplay focuses on you doing more of the same thing indefinitely. Due to the way the guild system in the game is, there is more competition between the player and the third NPC party (The Forgotten) than there is between other players. The game becomes akin to Farmville with Command and Conquer skins. If you're a casual gamer not looking for much more than something to keep you occupied, then C&C: Tiberium Alliances won't disappoint.

Ragnarok Online Begins War Of Emperium

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 12:05 PM PDT

Gravity Interactive has launched a new economic battle event in Ragnarok Online.

War of Emperium, announced last week, opens up the availability to the Hall of the Abyss through dimensional cracks discovered within the Guild Halls. In order to win control, players must purchase Castle Investments, which will be available during a period of time each game day. Players can invest anywhere from 10,000 zeny to 2,000,000 zeny, and each realm will be tallied individually. Those who invest the most control the Halls of Abyss, a solo and group area for players above level 135.

Gravity Interactive also publishes ROSE Online and Dragon Saga.

RAGNAROK ONLINE ENTERS A NEW AGE OF WAR

Can Players Really Afford The War of Emperium?

Marina Del Rey, California -August 8, 2012 – Gravity Interactive, a publisher of exciting massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), announced today the start of a new event for their highly lauded MMORPG, Ragnarok Online. Originally a subscription title, Ragnarok Online has been free to play for two years. Recently Classic Servers returned for Ragnarok Online’s long nine year history which gives it a polish few other free to play games can approach! Players can register for a free WarpPortal account at http://www.playragnarok.com/

Show Me The Money! Eerie, unrecognizable sounds have been heard within the Guild Halls. Thus, Rune-Midgard scientists were dispatched to investigate the curious noises. Their findings rocked the foundation of the world – literally! The discovery of dimensional cracks leading to an alternative dimension deep within the ancient castle was an unexpected boon. Quickly, Cat-Hand agents offered to help maintain the dimensional cracks, which have been established as leading to an area now nicknamed Hall of Abyss.

But Rune-Midgard wasn’t ready to give up their coveted prize so easily! Finally, after heated debate between the Rune-Midgard Kingdom and Cat-Hand agents, it was decided to leave ownership of the Abyss in the hands of the guilds.for a price!

“Players will now compete rigorously to own the Hall of Abyss, even temporarily, but in this war might doesn’t make right,” said Jason Heimdallr Koerperich, Ragnarok Online Producer at Gravity Interactive. “Instead, the War of Emperium will be an economic battle, where the highest bidders will lay claim to the new zone!”

Castle Investments will be available for a short period of time per game date, and total investments will be updated every five hours. Cat-Hand agents will be scattered throughout the castle to collect funds. Players can invest the minimum of 10,000 zeny (the in-game currency of Ragnarok Online) up to a maximum of 2,000,000 zeny. Each realm will have their individual totals tallied separately, so guilds compete among known enemies to hold control of the new coveted territory.

The Halls of Abyss is aimed at players 135 or up, and provides both solo and group content. Players can learn more, see the latest screen shots of Abyss, and much more at the official Ragnarok Online Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/playragnarok and share their experiences and strategies with fellow players!

The delicate seals that protect the world from spilling into complete chaos weaken and break, and only the knowledge and power from the age of myth can save Midgard from certain doom. Can you and your allies push back the threat of total annihilation and protect Midgard from the final Ragnarok? Join now at Play Ragnarok Online!

Thousands of soldiers had been sent to the boundary (Mount Hua Pond) by the Realm of Heaven to protect the human world. Though two realms fought tirelessly, the Demon Realm continued to grow. As a last resort the Heavenly Realm made the difficult choice to seal away Mount Hua Pond and trapped thousands of their own soldiers.

In the present time, the Realm of Heaven has sent Jenny to free the trapped spirits. Yuna, her childhood friend, vows to stop her from unsealing the terrifying Mount Hua Pond. At the same time, the Demon General Zayden is planning on unsealing Mount Hua Pond to use the Demons trapped inside to invade the Human Realm!

An additional 32 Stances have been added to the game, including new Advanced Stances. Over 120 quests have been added, many involving Mount Hua Pond. High level drops include four new Purple level 75 sets and four new Golden sets. 90 crafting recipes are ready to be discovered, resulting in over 100 new items.

Practice new abilities in the Mount Hua Pond Forbidden Tower, the Sky Tower Hellfire Pass, or dive into new dungeons including Burning Lands, Thunder Tower, Sky Tower: Arcane Sanctum and Sky Tower: Altar of Yin-Yang. As always, players can look forward to an updated pet system, and the continuation of the Princess System, with new dialogue from level 71 to 75.

Scarlet Legacy offers tactical combat with stylishly cinematic animation, plenty of character customization options, and numerous PvP modes and battlefields. There are four classes to choose from but each has access to multiple unique talent trees, bonus granting Martial Arts combat Stances, and evolving skills which allow for far more personalized progression. Scarlet Legacy is a complete MMORPG with crafting profession skills, mounts, pet customization, and mutation systems, and dozens of in-world mini-games.

Each faction also has a deep political system in which a leader known as the Archon serves for a week, with up to eight councilors at their side, either through election or through PvP ranking. RF ONLINE RETURNS TRIUMPHANTLY TO NORTH AMERICA

GamesCampus Launching English Servers This Month

Sunnyvale, Calif. (August 07, 2012) – Leading online game publisher GamesCampus (www.GamesCampus.com), today blows the door open on a mighty secret: the successful return of the PVP centric sci-fi MMORPG, RF Online. A mix of fantasy with a healthy dose of science fiction, Rising Force Online pits players into a massive three-faction nonstop battle that equips them with everything from swords to nuclear weapons to bring the opposing factions to their knees! Players can sign up now for a GamesCampus account at rfonline.gamescampus.com

“GamesCampus is proud to partner with CCR to bring RF Online to a global audience in English, and completely free to play!” said Hubert Yee, Head of Marketing at GamesCampus. “The two companies have been working closely together for months and we’re very excited to begin service for Rising Force Online in late August.”

RF Online features three distinct races: Bellato, with pointed ears, use Force (magic) as their primary weapon. They rely on heavy mechs known as MAU’s for a variety of combat situations. Cora are similar to Bellato in appearance, though larger, and prefer to use their Force to call and tame creatures known as Animus to aid in their victories. Accretia are a race of cyborgs, completely mechanical, and unable to use Force. Instead they rely on technological feats including both close range weapons and ranged combat such as rocket launchers.

Prefer to fight with words over weapons? RF Online’s deep political system wants YOU! Each of the three races is led by a political leader, the Archon, who serves a one week term. An Archon may appoint up to eight councillors to aid him or her in decision making. If the politicians cannot woo the vote of the population, the player with the highest PVP ranking will be automatically slotted into the open position, proving might does make right in the world of RF Online.

RF Online seamlessly fuses together the world of fantasy and technology as never seen before. Whether building a reputation for ruthless player versus player (PVP) action, pursuing a political career and becoming Archon of a faction, or creating an economical stranglehold on the production and consumption of minerals, play RF Online the way you want to. Compete in massive realm versus realm versus realm (RvRvR) as three unique factions vie for control of resources and the Holystone Keeper. Only headquarters and settlement towns are safe from enemy encroachment: watch your back, or someone will be sure to stab it.
