U.S. - Mexico Announce Deal On Migration And Tariffs

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 08:51 PM PDT

Reuters: Trump calls off tariffs on Mexico after deal on migration

WASHINGTON/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The United States and Mexico reached a deal on Friday to avert a tariff war, with Mexico pledging to take "strong measures" to contain the migration of mostly Central Americans crossing the southern U.S. border, a surge in recent months that has overwhelmed U.S. resources.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has continually railed against illegal immigration as a candidate and since taking office, had threatened to impose 5% import tariffs on all Mexican goods from Monday if Mexico did not do more to tighten its borders. Imposing tariffs on Mexico would have left the United States fighting trade wars with two of its three largest trading partners and would further unnerve financial markets already on edge about a global economic slowdown.

WNU Editor: This was a no win situation for Mexico, and one that could have all been avoided if Mexico had taken action against the human traffickers who were organizing these massive caravans. Shame on Mexico to permit these human smuggling and trafficking organizations with their illicit financial and transportation networks to flourish, and shame on those in the U.S. who supported or downplayed this migration crisis.

Could The U.S. Navy's World War II Plans Used To Defeat Japan Be Used On China?

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 07:00 PM PDT

James Holmes, National Interest: Could The Navy Dust Off Its World War II Plan to Beat Japan and Use it On China?

Would it work?

Suppose Beijing opted to risk a cross-strait invasion of Taiwan. Take it from an old naval artilleryman: amphibious operations are no simple matter even when the auguries are good. And an attack on Taiwan would be far from auspicious for PLA forces. If you transpose a map of probable landing beaches on Taiwan onto the map of the actual Allied landings in Normandy in 1944, the imagery is striking. The two amphibious zones are comparable in size, while Taiwan's coastal terrain rivals Normandy's as an obstacle to troops storming ashore. PLA soldiers and marines will have their work cut out for them should the Chinese Communist leadership ordain that the island be taken by force.

U.S. Military Pilots May Soon Be Joined By Robotic Figher Jets On Combat Missions

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 08:29 PM PDT

The Boeing Airpower Teaming System is the company's first unmanned system developed in Australia and designed for global defense customers.Boeing

NBC: Robotic fighter jets could soon join military pilots on combat missions. Here's why.

The fast-flying drones would scout enemy locations and draw fire that otherwise would be directed at human pilots.

Military pilots may soon have a new kind of wingman to depend upon: not flesh-and-blood pilots but fast-flying, sensor-studded aerial drones that fly into combat to scout enemy targets and draw enemy fire that otherwise would be directed at human-piloted aircraft.

War planners see these robotic wingmen as a way to amplify air power while sparing pilots' lives and preventing the loss of sophisticated fighter jets, which can cost more than $100 million apiece.

"These drone aircraft are a way to get at that in a more cost-effective manner, which I think is really a game-changer for the Air Force," says Paul Scharre, director of the technology and national security program at the Center for a New American Security, a think tank in Washington, D.C.

Tonight's Movie Is 'The Thousand Plane Raid'

From Wikipedia: The Thousand Plane Raid (aka The One Thousand Plane Raid[2]) is a 1969 film directed by Boris Sagal. It stars Christopher George and Laraine Stephens.[3] Although claimed to be derived from Ralph Barker's The Thousand Plane Raid, the storyline inaccurately portrays the first raid as an 8th Air Force mission while the actual attack was undertaken by 1,047 Royal Air Force bombers against the city of Cologne, Germany in May 1942.

Khalid Albaih, Al Jazeera: No, it's not over for the Sudanese revolution

The counter-revolution has struck and temporarily cleared the streets, but it has not broken the revolutionary spirit.

For those of us who have watched closely the events in the Arab world since 2011, what happened on June 3 in Sudan was expected. Sooner or later, the counter-revolution was going to strike.

As bodies are being pulled out of the Nile River and shocking stories are surfacing of extreme torture and rape, the brutality of the crackdown is yet to be revealed in full. Officially, over 100 people have been confirmed dead; in reality, the death toll is probably much higher and we may never know the exact number, as the criminal forces who committed the massacre have taken measures to cover up their crimes.

William J. Astore, The Nation: The Dirty Truth About American Airpower

A retired Air Force officer shares 10 cautionary tenets about our overreliance on bombing campaigns.

From Syria to Yemen in the Middle East, Libya to Somalia in Africa, Afghanistan to Pakistan in South Asia, an American aerial curtain has descended across a huge swath of the planet. Its stated purpose: combating terrorism. Its primary method: constant surveillance and bombing—and yet more bombing. Its political benefit: minimizing the number of US boots on the ground and thus American casualties in the never-ending war on terrorism, as well as any public outcry about Washington's many conflicts. Its economic benefit: plenty of high-profit business for weapon-makers for whom the president can now declare a national security emergency whenever he likes and so sell their warplanes and munitions to preferred dictatorships in the Middle East (no congressional approval required). Its reality for various foreign peoples: a steady diet of Made in USA bombs and missiles bursting here, there, and everywhere.

There Are Less Than 10 B-1 Bombers Operational In The U.S. Air Force

A U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bomber aircraft lands at Avalon Airport, Geelong, Australia, in March 2017. A House Armed Services subcommittee is raising alarms about the dismal state of B-1 readiness, and could order the Air Force to produce a plan to fix it. (Master Sgt. John Gordinier/Air Force)

War Is Boring: Less than 20% of B-1 Lancers are operation due to neglect from the Air Force

The U.S. Air Force is slacking when it comes to the B-1 Lancer fleet, with less than ten operational units out of a total number of 62.

The fast-moving, low-level bomber was once the pride of the USAF but now problems are beginning to manifest as the Air Force neglects them in favor of newer airframe and projects.

The newest B-1 in the fleet began flying the skies 31 years ago and the plane itself has been in service since 1985.

Originally it was outfitted to deliver a nuclear payload, but over time the B-1's role within the Air Force has changed.

Lockheed Martin Optimistic That It Will Be Selling A Lot Of F-35s In Europe And Worldwide

Flight Global: Lockheed Martin eyes 500 F-35 fighters in Europe

With the Pentagon wavering over the number of F-35s it wants to buy, Lockheed Martin has turned its gaze on Europe. The company is bullish on selling the aircraft to America's European allies. It believes that by 2030 there will be more than 500 F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters deployed in Europe – more than the number of Eurofighter Typhoons currently in operation worldwide.

"With Finland, Poland and Switzerland evaluating the airplane right now that could be a number that is approaching 700 airplanes by that same timeframe," says Steve Over, director of F-35 international business development. "We are in dialogue with almost every free country around the world."

WASHINGTON/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The United States has decided to stop accepting any more Turkish pilots who had planned to train in the United States on F-35 fighter jets, three U.S. officials said, in a sign of an escalating dispute over Ankara's plans to purchase Russian air defences two NATO allies have sparred publicly for months over Turkey's order for Russia's S-400 air defence system, which Washington says poses a threat to the Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 stealthy fighters, which Turkey also plans to buy.

The United States says Turkey cannot have both, but had avoided taking steps to curtail or halt planned training of Turkish pilots in the programme, a reprisal that could be seen as an embarrassment in Turkey.

Theresa May Quits As Leader Of The Conservative Party: UK Set For New PM By End Of July

Theresa May resigned as Conservative Party leader on Friday, marking an end to a tumultuous three years at the head of U.K. politics. She will remain in her prime ministerial post only until a replacement is elected and the failure to deliver Brexit is already being scripted as her legacy.

Members of Parliament (MPs) voted down her proposed "withdrawal agreement" for a third time at the end of March, but May's departure may not necessarily mean that her blueprint for pulling the U.K. out of Europe will be completely discarded.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that tariffs of 5% will be imposed on all Mexican exports to the United States on Monday if Mexico does not step up efforts to stem an increase in mostly Central American migrants heading for the U.S. border.

Lockheed Martin believes that worldwide sales of the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter could reach 4,600 units, a 15% increase from its previous projection.

The company said as recently as 24 May that it projected the F-35 to have a lifetime sales potential of 4,000 aircraft. The current programme of record for the F-35 is around 3,200 examples; though that count includes planned purchases as well as signed orders.

Ultimately, interest in the combat aircraft, including potential orders from Middle Eastern countries, could boost the programme's total lifetime sales, said Marillyn Hewson, chief executive of Lockheed Martin, at an investors conference on 29 May.

U.S. Congress Wants The Final Say On Air Force One Paint Job

Defense One: Lawmakers Want the Final Say on Air Force One Paint Job

A House panel has drafted legislation that would require congressional approval if Trump wants to change the Kennedy-era livery.

Some U.S. lawmakers want the final say if President Trump decides to change Air Force One's paint job from the blue-and-white livery that has adorned presidential planes for more than a half century.

Last year, Trump told CBS News that he wants to paint the new planes "red, white and blue, which I think is appropriate."

But the House Armed Services seapower and projection forces subcommittee — in its review of the Pentagon's 2020 budget request — has drafted legislation that would require the plane's paint job to "comply with the criteria set forth in a report of the Boeing Company titled ''Phase II Aircraft Livery and Paint Study Final Report' as submitted to the Federal Government in April 2017."

What's in that report? Boeing declined to comment.

The U.S. has beefed up its military presence in the region in an effort to deter Iran and protect American forces and allies.

Over the last month, the Trump administration announced that it was sending an aircraft carrier strike group and Air Force bombers to the Middle East, as well as Patriot missiles and additional troops, amid heightened concerns of an Iranian attack.

Reuters: U.S. and Russia blame each other for near collision in East China Sea

MOSCOW/TOKYO (Reuters) - Russia and the United States blamed each other for a near collision between their warships in the East China Sea on Friday with both countries accusing one another of dangerous and unprofessional behavior.

Russia's Pacific Fleet said that the USS Chancellorsville, a guided-missile cruiser, had come within just 50 meters (165 feet) of the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov which had been forced to take emergency action to avoid a collision, Russian news agencies reported.

Inside A Russian Troll Factory

Charles Maynes, PRI's The World/Business Insider: A Russian 'troll slayer' went undercover at a troll factory and found that hundreds of Russians were working as paid trolls in rotating shifts

* "Troll slayer" and journalist Lyudmila Savchuk when undercover at a troll factory for two and a half months to see how it works.
* Savchuk found that the organization was broken up into departments: "news division," the "social media seeders", and a group dedicated to producing visual memes known as " demotivators."
* The operation was run by a local restaurateur who was placed under US sanctions for attempting to interfere with US elections.
* Savchuk believed her work would help Facebook understand how its platform could be gamed, but no longer believes the fight against trolls is winnable.

When a journalist heard a bot organization was hiring writers, she went for it.

Slaying online trolls can be a lonely business. Just ask Russia's Lyudmila Savchuk, who first exposed the story of Russia's disinformation campaign back in 2014.

The journalist and 33-year-old mother of two, Savchuk started noticing websites and social media accounts attacking local opposition activists in her hometown of Saint Petersburg with a frequency she hadn't seen before.

This Is What A Technology Cold War Looks Like

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 05:24 AM PDT

Epoch Times: What a Technology Cold War Could Look Like

During the Cold War, around half of the world ran on the technologies, machinery, and political ideologies developed by the Soviet Union. The other half—the free world—adopted those of the United States and its allies.

As trade war tensions between the United States and China escalate, could we be on the cusp of a new version of the cold war, one which is driven by technology and finance?

Since U.S. President Donald Trump has deemed Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies as a national security threat and barred it from purchasing key U.S. equipment, Beijing has engaged in an escalating tit-for-tat that could have lasting ramifications on the technology industry going forward.

And Huawei may just be the beginning. Several other Chinese companies are being considered to join the blacklist with Huawei.

UAE, Norway, Saudi Arabia: ‘State Actor’ Likely Attacked Oil Tankers

VOA: UAE, Norway, Saudi Arabia: 'State Actor' Likely Attacked Oil Tankers

UNITED NATIONS — The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Norway said Thursday that a preliminary investigation into a coordinated attack on four of their oil tankers in an Emirati port last month was likely carried out by a state actor.

In a joint statement, they said limpet mines were used in the May 12 coordinated attacks, which left large holes in the hulls of the four tankers, but did not cause more extensive damage or oil spills. Limpets are a type of naval mine that attach to their target with magnets.

"It appears most likely that the mines were placed on the vessels by divers deployed from fast boats," the statement said. "While investigations are still ongoing, these facts are strong indications that the four attacks were part of a sophisticated and coordinated operation carried out by an actor with significant operational capacity, most likely a state actor."

ABC News Online: The Afghan Files

Defence leak exposes deadly secrets of Australia's special forces.

Hundreds of pages of secret defence force documents leaked to the ABC give an unprecedented insight into the clandestine operations of Australia's elite special forces in Afghanistan, including incidents of troops killing unarmed men and children.

The ABC can reveal that some of the cases detailed in the documents are being investigated as possible unlawful killings.

This comes a day after the ABC revealed the alleged cover up of the killing of an Afghan boy and another alleged incident in which a father and son were shot dead during a raid.

The documents, many marked AUSTEO — Australian Eyes Only — suggest a growing unease at the highest levels of Defence about the culture of Australia's special forces as they prosecuted a bloody, secretive war against insurgents across a swathe of southern Afghanistan.

5 U.S. Tourists Have Died in the Dominican Republic Since April. Should You Cancel Your Trip?

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 02:07 PM PDT

A string of high profile deaths, illnesses and a claim of assault in the Dominican Republic has cast a shadow of concern over a country whose economy is largely driven by tourism.

But despite the tragic headlines, hotel officials and safety experts are cautioning travelers not to rush to conclusions. The connections, they say, are not immediately apparent and safety experts in particular are warning that the country is no more dangerous than it was before.

“It’s not an overly dangerous place,” former CIA agent and current Regional Security Director of International SOS Matthew Bradley tells TIME. “I would still consider the Dominican Republic a safe place to go.”

About 6.5 million tourists visited the island in 2018, making it the top destination in the Caribbean, according to the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange. But for those millions of travelers with trips booked, police and resort officials are asking the public to wait for conclusions from investigations before making assumptions — and denying there is anything nefarious at play.

High-profile incidents involving American tourists

Since the beginning of 2019, there have been multiple high-profile cases involving American tourists dying or being seriously injured while staying in the Dominican Republic.

Miranda Schaup-Werner of Pennsylvania died on May 25 after she was found unresponsive by hotel staff in her Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville resort hotel room. According to the hotel, which is located in San Pedro de Macoris, The National Institute of Forensic Sciences and the National Police Investigations Unit concluded the 41-year-old had suffered a heart attack. In a statement, Bahia Principe says that her husband, who she was traveling with, confirmed she had a history of heart conditions.

Five days later, on May 30, Maryland couple Cynthia Ann Day, 49 and Nathaniel Edward Holmes, 63 were both found unresponsive in their rooms by hotel staff the day they were scheduled to check out. Bahia Principe confirmed the couple was staying at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana, which is less than a mile away from sister resort Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville where Schaup-Wener stayed. According to Bahia Principe, there were no signs of violence and the case of Holmes and Day is still under investigation and awaiting results of toxicology test.

“To date, there are no indications of any correlation between these two unfortunate incidents,” the hotel’s statement read. “We disapprove of any speculation and conjecture on the possible causes of death and urge all to respect the families while the investigation is ongoing.”

On Friday, a Colorado couple told CNN they are suing the resort the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana resort, where Day and Holmes stayed, after falling ill last June. Kaylynn Knull, 29, and her boyfriend Tom Schwander, 33, said they were forced to cut their trip short because they fell seriously ill during their stay at the resort. When the couple returned home, still feeling sick, a doctor told the couple they were likely exposed to organophosphates, a chemical typically found in pesticide.

“There’s something going on,” Knull told CNN. “What happened to us may be related to what happened to them.”

Hours after the story, Bahia Principe reiterated that they were cooperating with authorities and their investigation in a statement.

On May 29, Delaware resident Tammy Lawrence-Daley shared a lengthy post on Facebook where she described being assaulted at Majestic Elegance Resort in Punta Cana in January. She alleged in her post that a man dressed in a resort uniform viciously attacked her for hours. Majestic Resorts said in a statement that authorities are still unclear on what has happened and investigations have revealed “weak points” in Daley’s “strange and unusual” case. The hotel also claims that Daley only took her story publicly after a $2.2 million settlement was denied.

“Some media in the United States have reported on this story considering that this story is true and definitive, instead of waiting for a final resolution of the case that not only affects Majestic Resorts, but also tourism for the entire Dominican Republic.” the statement said.

“Majestic states that it continues to cooperate with the authorities in the resolution of this case until they can provide an official final declaration.” the resort added. Daley has yet to publicly respond to the resorts claims.

In April, the bodies of New York City couple Orlando Moore, 40, and Portia Ravenelle, 52, were found after being reported missing for weeks. Dominican authorities confirmed that the couple died in a car accident in Santo Domingo.

How safe is the Dominican Republic?

The U.S. State Department issued a level two (out of four) safety warning for the Dominican Republic in April 2019. The warning advises travelers exercise increased caution due to violent crime in the country, which include armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault. The State Department says that resort areas tend to be better policed and safer that urban areas for travelers.

Bradley says he would advise anyone worried about traveling to the Dominican Republic to take the same precautions they would when going anywhere else.

“These incidents, while recent, in my mind don’t indicate Dominican Republic is any less safe than it was before,” Bradley, the Regional Security Director of International SOS, says. “I would tell people to continue with trips.”

Considering the level two safety ranking from the State Department, Bradley advises travelers not to go anywhere alone, especially at night. And if you do wander on your own, Bradley says, let a companion know when you plan on returning so they can be aware something is amiss if you do not return. “Travel has risk,” Bradley says. “People should be aware before they travel where they are going and plan accordingly, if they do, they usually travel safely.”

Considering the three deaths of three were due to medical causes, Dr. Robert Quigley, Senior Vice President and Regional Medical Director of International SOS says travelers should take extra precaution with their health when away from home.

He advises travelers to visit a doctor prior to embarking on their trip, especially if they might have a chronic medical condition or cardiovascular disease. Quigley says sleep deprivation and stress can “exacerbate underlying, and sometimes asymptomatic, serious cardiovascular diseases.”

He also advised travelers to pack extra medication in case their trip is delayed.

Will tourism in the Dominican Republic be affected?

As the stories continue to emerge, some travelers have taken to social media to voice concerns about traveling to the Caribbean country. While officials at the Dominican Ministry of Tourism told TIME they were not able to elaborate on the situation because of the ongoing investigation, on Thursday, Francisco Javier García, the Minister of Tourism for Dominican Republic said that the investigations are not affecting the number of tourist visiting the country.

“These cases are very regrettable, but isolated.” he said at a press conference on Thursday. “Investigation into them is a top priority for us and for the National Police. We are asking them to deploy all resources to help provide answers as quickly as possible.”

He called the Dominican Republic a “tranquil, peaceful destination and the safest in the region,” and said tourists can “be assured that the authorities are working hard to clarify these incidents.”

Despite the reassurance, some travelers are saying the incidents have cast doubt on the safety of the country and are refusing to take a chance.

Theresa May Formally Steps Down as Conservative Party Leader

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 09:23 AM PDT

(LONDON) — British Prime Minister Theresa May formally stepped down as Conservative Party leader on Friday, defeated by the Brexit conundrum.

May’s three years at the helm ended not with a bang but a whimper: The party simply confirmed there had been a private exchange of letters between May and the committee that oversees party rules, confirming the departure announced by May two weeks ag

May will remain as acting leader and prime minister for a few weeks while the party picks a successor, who will become Britain’s next prime minister.

Almost a dozen Conservative lawmakers are already jostling to replace May in a contest that formally opens Monday, vowing to succeed where 62-year-old May failed and renegotiate Britain’s deal to pull out of the European Union. There’s just one problem: The EU says that’s not going to happen.

“There will be no renegotiation,” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said — not for the first time — last week.

On Friday, Juncker lamented: “Everyone understands English, but nobody understands England.”

Britain voted 52% to 48% in 2016 to leave the EU, and the 27 other nations finally agreed late last year to a detailed withdrawal plan with May’s government.

But her plan has been rejected three times by Parliament, doomed by hardline lawmakers who wanted more of a clean break and those who wanted a softer Brexit that kept close economic ties to the bloc.

The departure day has been postponed from March 29 to Oct. 31.

In the wake of the plan’s defeat, many of May’s Conservative colleagues decided she had to go.

The mess has transformed the U.K.’s political map. May’s Conservatives and the main opposition Labour Party are both fractured over how to leave the EU.

Frustrated and angry voters are turning away from the big parties to the upstart Brexit Party led by Nigel Farage and — on the other side of the European divide — the Liberal Democrats and Greens, who want Britain to remain in the EU.

Farage’s Brexit Party came close to winning its first seat in Parliament on Friday, narrowly losing to Labour in a special election in the eastern England city of Peterborough. Labour’s share of the vote fell sharply from the last election in 2017, and the Conservatives came third.

Despite the loss, Farage said the result showed that British politics had “fundamentally changed,” with the stranglehold of the long-dominant Conservative and Labour parties now broken.

It’s too soon to say whether he is right, but the bigger parties are worried.

May became Britain’s second female prime minister in July 2016, after her predecessor David Cameron stepped down in the wake of the EU referendum. Now the party will hold a similar contest to replace her.

Conservative lawmakers will hold a ballot June 13, with any candidates who don’t get at least 5% of votes dropping out. Further rounds will be held on June 18, 19 and 20 if needed, with the least popular candidate dropping out each time.

The final two candidates will be put to a postal ballot of about 160,000 Conservative members, with the winner announced the week of July 22.

The race, which already has 11 candidates, is utterly dominated by Brexit.

The front-runner, Boris Johnson, has warned that the Conservatives face “extinction” if Britain doesn’t leave the EU on Oct. 31.

Johnson is one of several contenders — including Environment Secretary Michael Gove, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Health Secretary Matt Hancock — promising to go back to Brussels and make changes to the Brexit deal.

“I believe that European leaders want to find a way through this,” Gove wrote in the Daily Mail.

But the chances that the other EU countries would consider reopening the legally binding agreement appear slim at best. Even as the Brexit saga has dragged on and the pressure of a potentially disastrous “no deal” Brexit mounted, no European leader has publicly shown an appetite for renegotiating any part of the 585-page text.

Hard-core Brexiteers in the British leadership contest say they would rather take Britain out of the bloc with no deal than countenance a further delay.

Most economists and businesses say a no-deal Brexit would cause economic turmoil, imposing obstacles overnight between the U.K. and the EU, its biggest trading partner.

U.S. and Russia Blame Each Other for Warships’ Near Collision in East China Sea

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 08:29 AM PDT

(WASHINGTON) — The U.S. and Russia accused each other of unsafe actions on Friday after an American guided-missile cruiser and a Russian destroyer came within 165 feet (50 meters) of each other in the East China Sea.

The U.S. 7th Fleet said the Russian destroyer put the safety of the USS Chancellorsville and its crew at risk, forcing it to reverse all engines at full throttle to avoid a collision.

It said a helicopter that was operating at sea was preparing to land on the Chancellorsville, which was traveling on a steady course, when the Russian destroyer, traveling behind the U.S. ship, speeded up and approached as close as 50-100 feet (15-30 meters).

Clay Doss, spokesman for the Japan-based 7th Fleet, said no one was injured and he was not aware of any damage to the ship.

“We consider Russia’s actions during this interaction as unsafe and unprofessional and not in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS), ‘Rules of the Road,’ and internationally recognized maritime customs,” the 7th Fleet said in a statement.

US, Russian Ships Near Collision
Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher J Krucke—APIn this image provided by the U.S. Navy, a Russian destroyer, left, sails very close to the USS Chancellorsville, right, while operating in the Philippine Sea, Friday, June 7, 2019. The U.S. and Russian militaries accused each other of unsafe actions in the incident.

It was the first such incident involving warships in the region since September, when a Chinese ship maneuvered close to an American destroyer in the South China Sea, an incident the U.S. also labeled unprofessional and unsafe.

The U.S. has repeatedly complained in recent years that Russian planes have flown dangerously close to American aircraft and the two nations routinely shadow each other in international airspace.

In this latest incident, in open ocean northeast of the Philippines, the Russian military accused the Chancellorsville of making a dangerous maneuver by crossing the path of the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov. It said in a statement that the U.S. cruiser “suddenly changed direction and crossed the path of Admiral Vinogradov just 50 meters (165 feet) away,” forcing the crew of the Russian ship to make a quick maneuver to avoid collision.

The Russian military said its navy sent a radio message in protest.

With U.S.-Russian relations at post-Cold War lows over the Ukrainian crisis, the war in Syria and Moscow’s meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the Russian and U.S. militaries have frequently exchanged accusations of what they describe as unsafe maneuvers by the other side’s warplanes and navy ships.

There Are No Abortion Providers in Guam — the Governor Wants That to Change

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 08:16 AM PDT

(HONOLULU) — Lourdes Leon Guerrero vigorously defended abortion rights as she campaigned to become the first female governor of Guam. She won, but now no doctors are willing to perform the procedure she fought so hard to defend. The last abortion provider in the heavily Catholic U.S. territory retired in May 2018. That’s forcing women seeking to end their pregnancies to fly thousands of miles from the remote Pacific island — a costly and sometimes prohibitive step.

“I truly believe that women should have control of their bodies,” Gov. Guerrero, a former nurse, told The Associated Press in a phone interview Thursday. “I’m very sad and very nervous about what’s happening across the nation.”

Several conservative states like Alabama and Missouri have passed tough abortion restrictions as they take aim at the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion across the United States.

Guam’s law, which Guerrero described as “very restrictive,” allows abortion, but doctors also have the legal right to deny services unless it’s a medical emergency. Abortions are allowed within 13 weeks, but anyone who terminates a pregnancy without help from a doctor can be charged with a felony.

Guerrero said she believes that doctors in Guam would still perform abortions if a woman’s life were in danger, but she’s concerned that other women will be forced to seek illegal or dangerous alternatives.

“That’s my fear,” she said. “I’m concerned about it going underground because then we can’t really control it, we can’t really monitor, we can’t really make sure that the women are doing it in an environment that is conducive to a healthy recovery.”

The governor said officials are trying to recruit doctors to come to the island and establish clinics. She said anti-abortion protesters are active on the island but are peaceful and doesn’t believe doctors fear for their safety.

“Doctors here, I think, are reluctant because of the Catholic community, I think they’re reluctant because they don’t want to be in the controversy,” Guerrero said.

Guerrero asked voters during the campaign last year if they support abortion, and many do despite about 80% of Guam’s 165,000 residents being Catholic, she said.

Her opponent disagreed. “Life begins at conception, period. … We must protect every life,” former Lt. Gov. Ray Tenorio said during a debate, the Pacific Daily News reported .

The other U.S. territories in the Pacific — American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands — both prohibit abortions except in very limited circumstances. All territories are partially self-governing but still under federal rule.

While Hawaii, a nearly eight-hour flight from Guam, is the closest U.S. state for a legal abortion, there have only been a handful of Guam women treated since last year, and none for an elective procedure, said Dr. Bliss Kaneshiro, an obstetrician-gynecologist and University of Hawaii professor.

“It’s a big problem. Abortion care is pretty basically reproductive health care — we know that many women will need an abortion during the course of their reproductive years,” Kaneshiro said. “We know that making abortion inaccessible doesn’t eliminate it, it forces women to seek unsafe measures to end a pregnancy.”

She said, to her knowledge, all those who have come from Guam are “women with desired pregnancies where there are severe anomalies that have prompted their decision to terminate their pregnancies.”

“It’s really quite a small number,” she said. “I would say over the course of the past six months, we have seen two or three patients.”

But Kaneshiro and her colleagues have heard about “many patients” on Guam needing abortion services. “Some of the doctors on Guam will contact us about patients,” she said. But “it requires a lot of financial resources for (the women) to come to Hawaii to get that care, and so not all of them end up actually coming here.”

Even in Hawaii, the island of Kauai has no abortion providers, forcing most women to fly to Oahu or Maui, and the Big Island only recently began offering services, Kaneshiro said.

Hawaii was the first state to approve a program in which doctors can mail abortion medications to patients so they don’t have to travel, she said.

But Guam law prevents doctors from mailing the medicine because the territory requires patients to have an in-person counseling session with a doctor or psychologist.

In a recent court case, a Guam man was charged with raping and impregnating an 11-year-old girl, who will have to go through with her pregnancy, Jayne Flores, director of the Bureau of Women’s Affairs, told the Pacific Daily News .

A message left with Guam’s archdiocese wasn’t immediately returned. A call to the clinic where abortions were previously performed wasn’t answered.

Lesbian Couple Assaulted on London Bus By Four Men Who Had Demanded The Women Kiss ‘So They Could Enjoy Watching’

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 07:47 AM PDT

Police in London are calling for witnesses after a couple was assaulted and robbed in a homophobic attack on a London bus.

Melania Geymonat, one of the victims in the attack, posted a photo on Facebook of her and her girlfriend Chris, both covered in blood. Geymonat wrote that she and Chris were on a date the evening of May 30. They caught the bus to head home and were sat on the upper deck when a group of about four men began harassing them, according to her Facebook post.

“They started behaving like hooligans, demanding that we kissed so they could enjoy watching, calling us ‘lesbians’ and describing sexual positions,” she wrote. “In an attempt to calm things down, I started making jokes. I thought this might make them go away.”

The men ignored Geymonat’s attempts to diffuse the situation. Instead, their behavior escalated. They punched both women repeatedly and stole their belongings.

“I don’t know yet if my nose is broken, and I haven’t been able to go back to work, but what upsets me the most is that VIOLENCE HAS BECOME A COMMON THING, that sometimes it’s necessary to see a woman bleeding after having been punched to feel some kind of impact,” she wrote. “I’m tired of being taken as a SEXUAL OBJECT, of finding out that these situations are usual, of gay friends who were beaten up JUST BECAUSE.”

London’s Metropolitan Police are investigating the incident, according to a statement, which details that the women were punched several times before the men ran off the bus, and that a bag and phone were stolen during the attack. Both women were taken to the hospital to treat injuries to their faces, police said.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the assault a “disgusting, misogynistic attack” and a hate crime.

“This is not the first situation men see two women kissing and they start acting like we were a show,” Geymonat said in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s World at One, adding that said she had experienced “a lot of verbal violence.” Other gay friends of hers living in London have also been the victims of assaults, she said.

Homophobic hate crimes have been on the rise in London in recent years, according to the Metropolitan Police’s crime dashboard. In 2018, 2,308 homophobic hate crimes were reported, up from 1,782 in 2015. As of April, 764 homophobic hate crimes have been reported in 2019.

North Korea’s Famed Mass Games Suspended After Criticism From Kim Jong Un

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 06:08 AM PDT

(SEOUL, South Korea) — North Korea will temporarily suspend the latest edition of its famous mass games, which involve thousands of performers working in precise synchronization, after the premiere drew strong criticism from leader Kim Jong Un, international travel agencies have said.

Simon Cockerell, general manager of Beijing-based Koryo Tours, said it was informed by its North Korean partners that the show, titled “The Land of the People,” will be suspended for days or weeks starting next Monday while its creators make adjustments. Rowan Beard, a tour manager at Young Pioneer Tours, said his company heard the same information and that no dates were given for when the show would resume. “We assume it will halt so some tweaks and improvements can be made to the performance,” Beard said in an email.

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said Kim seriously criticized the creators for a “wrong spirit of creation and irresponsible work attitude” following Monday’s opening performance at Pyongyang’s 150,000-seat May Day Stadium. KCNA said Kim set forth “important tasks” to correctly implement the country’s revolutionary policy on literature and art. It did not provide further details.

The North’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper published photos of Kim waving to clapping spectators while flanked by senior officials, including his powerful sister, Kim Yo Jong, and crowds in the stands using colored cards to spell out “To the eternity of Korea, hurrah!” as fireworks exploded over the stadium.

STR—AFP/Getty ImagesA photo taken on June 4, 2019 shows a ‘Grand Mass Gymnastics and Artistic Performance’ at the May Day stadium in Pyongyang. – The “Grand Mass Gymnastics and Artistic Performance” features enormous numbers of people — mostly students and children — performing synchronised moves.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which deals with inter-Korean affairs, said it couldn’t confirm whether North Korea was pausing the mass games.

State media often report scoldings by Kim of military officials, factory operators, educators and others perceived to be not performing to his standards. The mass games — propaganda spectacles that feature thousands of gymnasts, dancers and flip card-holding spectators moving in coordinated perfection — were once routine in North Korea. But the performances went on a hiatus for several years during the mourning for Kim’s father and only returned last year.

Chopper rides, foreign trips: Ex-IL&FS bosses took favours for loans

Posted:

Foreign trips, private jet travels, chopper riders and interior decoration at houses aboard -- the probe into the IL&FS saga has unearthed many such inducements that the top brass allegedly got from borrowers in return for faster loans and delayed recoveries. As large-scale manipulations continue to unravel at the once-mighty group, an investigation by the government's white-collar fraud probe agency SFIO has revealed several cases where the top brass got personal benefits from the borrowers of IL&FS Financial Services Ltd (IFIN), the non-banking financial services arm of the Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS).E-mail trails have revealed deep-rooted connivance between former senior IL&FS officials and Siva Group Chairman C Sivasankaran as loans continued to be ever greened and recoveries delayed, according to officials. The SFIO (Serious Fraud Investigation Office) probe into the affairs of IFIN found that the company had entered into 15 transactions of advancing loans to or investing in debentures of Siva Group companies.Officials said repayment of loans pertaining to only four transactions were done among the total 15 transactions.Based on e mail data, the probe agency found that Sivasankaran arranged hospitality for at least three executives -- Ravi Parthsarathy, Vibhav Kapoor and Hari Sankaran. These included foreign travels, private jets and helicopter rides, booking of resorts and even arranging for interiors of some flats in Brussels (Belgium), according to the officials. In return, the three officials were found to have connived with Sivasankaran and influenced decision-making process at IFIN, including those related to recovery and disbursement of loans and fees, they added.Sivasankaran, described as the "controlling will and mind of the Siva Group", had personal relationship with Ravi Parthasarathy and Hari Sankaran, as per the chargesheet filed by the SFIO last week.New loans were extended to the group to facilitate repayment of existing loans, which were required to be classified as non-performing assets. The fraudulent circuitous transactions among IFIN and Siva Group companies had aided to project a rosy picture of financial statements and defraud the lenders of IFIN, the officials said. The massive scam at IL&FS came to light last year after several group entities defaulted on repayments due to liquidity crunch. Amid the situation raising concerns about the overall financial system, the government superseded the IL&FS board. At the end of March 2018, the sprawling IL&FS group's debt burden was estimated to be more than Rs 90,000 crore. The SFIO has filed the first chargesheet after inspecting accounts of nearly 400 entities, an extensive forensic audit, data collected from desktops and laptops seized from various IL&FS offices as well as e mails extracted from IL&FS servers. Besides, RBI inspection reports, minutes of meetings, assessment reports from the government-appointed IL&FS board and other documents were also taken into consideration. The chargesheet, filed before a special court in Mumbai, has accused 30 entities/ individuals of various violations and offences, including of financial fraud. The former top-management members of IFIN have been charged with committing fraud with intent to injure the interest of the company, its shareholders and creditors, resulting in wrongful loss to the company. The white collar crime probe agency has charged former top management members of IFIN of forming a "coterie" with its auditors and independent directors to defraud the company while running the business as their "personal fiefdom".The 'coterie' identified by SFIO included Ravi Parthasarthy, Hari Sankaran, Arun Saha, Ramesh Bawa, Vibhav Kapoor and K Ramchand, who were in the top management of various IL&FS firms.SFIO said its probe revealed that IFIN, as an NBFC, extended loans to companies of Siva, ABG, A2Z, Parsvnath and other corporate groups, though a number of them were not servicing their debt obligations timely.

SBI to link home loans to repo rate from July

Posted:

State Bank of India (SBI), the country's biggest mass-lender, on Friday began a new era of transparency in consumer loans by linking the pricing of its home-financing products to the central bank policy rate used for setting the broader cost of debt in the economy.Starting July 1, consumers would have the option to take SBI home loans pegged to the central bank repo rate, the lender said in a statement a day after the cost of funds was set at the lowest since 2010. Friday's move follows the Mumbai-based bank's March decision to link its savings bank rate and short-term lending rates to the repo. The bank will continue to offer home-loan products linked to the marginal cost of lending rate (MCLR), but customers can opt for a repo linked home loan rate, said PK Gupta, managing director in charge of retail banking at SBI."This is a different product. It is linked to repo and at a larger tenure than the normal home loan. The rate for a Rs 75-lakh home loan comes to 8.40%, compared with 8.55% on the existing home loan," Gupta said. "However, the tenure under the new product will be more and can go up to 35 years, compared with 30 years we offer now because customers have to pay a 3% outstanding amount plus interest every year."Currently, SBI offers home loans up to Rs 75 lakh to customers at 8.55%. The new loan product now being offered will have a base spread of 2.25% above the 5.75% repo rate, meaning 8%. The bank will also charge a 40 basis point spread over the rate, Gupta said. One basis point is 0.01 percentage point.Existing borrowers can shift to repo rate-linked product by paying a 0.25% charge, Gupta said."We have already linked our overdraft and cash credit rates to the repo rate earlier this year and now we have introduced the home loan product. As we have said earlier, we will gradually link our loan rates to the RBI rates for faster transmission," said SBI CFO Prashant Kumar.Transmission of interest rates has been an issue with the central bank as loans offered by high-street banks have not become cheaper as quickly as declines in the policy rate. "It has been noticed in the past that it took four to six months for transmission. But this time, transmission has been faster than that," central bank governor Shaktikanta Das told reporters Thursday after the policy decision.Das said banks have only reduced rates by 21 basis points of the 50-basis point reduction in policy rates, going by the weighted average lending rate reduction.

10-yr jail proposed for cryptocurrency users

Posted:

Holding, selling or dealing in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin could soon land you in jail for 10 years. The "Banning of Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill 2019" draft has proposed 10-year prison sentence for persons who "mine, generate, hold, sell, transfer, dispose, issue or deal in cryptocurrencies.Besides making it completely illegal, the bill makes holding of cryptos a non-bailable offence.A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography for security and is generally based on blockchain technology, a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers. Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency in the world.Given the high chances of cryptocurrencies being misused for money laundering, various government bodies such as the Income Tax Department and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) had endorsed banning of cryptocurrencies. The draft bill for banning cryptocurrency has been in the works for some time with Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg leading the exercise. While strict law would soon be in place to deal with people indulging in trade of cryptocurrency, India is likely to have its own digital currency."A decision on the launch of Digital Rupee would be taken after consulting the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)," said an official.

Promoter stake row: Kotak Bank fined Rs 2 crore

Posted:

Taking a strict line, Reserve Bank of India today imposed a penalty of Rs 2 crore on Kotak Mahindra Bank for not sharing promoter stake information with the Central Bank. The Central Bank said that the action is based on the deficiencies in regulatory compliance. "The bank was directed by RBI to furnish information about details of the shareholding held by its promoters and to submit details of the proposed course of action of the bank for complying with the permitted timeline for dilution of promoter shareholding," RBI said."However, the bank failed to comply with the said directions and a Notice was issued to the bank advising it to show cause as to why penalty should not be imposed for non-compliance with the said directions," it said."After considering the reply received from the bank, submissions made by the bank during the personal hearing and the documents submitted by it, RBI came to the conclusion that the bank had failed to comply with the directions issued by RBI and decided to impose monetary penalty on the bank," it added. The tiff between the banking regulator and Kotak has been going on since 2014. The central bank has been engaged in a dispute with Kotak since 2014 for having failed to meet the first milestone stake reduction. The RBI had directed the Kotak Mahindra Bank in August 2018 to dilute promoter's holding from around 30 per cent to a maximum of 20 per cent of its paid-up voting equity capital by December 31, 2018 and to 15 per cent by March 31, 2020. But Uday Kotak has insisted that the owners' stake in the bank as a percentage of paid-up capital was in line with rules. In August 2018, the promoters sought to lower their stake to 19.7% through the sale of perpetual non-cumulative preference shares. The plan was rejected by the RBI. It's said to have reasoned that the instruments were interest-bearing and derivative in nature with a call option after five years and therefore not equivalent to equity. The RBI wants promoters to reduce their stakes in banks to ensure they don't retain untrammeled control and to promote professional management.

Paytm case accused Sonia Dhawan joins Sheroes

Sonia Dhawan, a former Paytm executive and prime accused in an extortion case involving company founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, has joined Sheroes. She will be director of corporate communications at the social network for women in which Sharma is also a stakeholder. The case against Dhawan, who has denied any attempts at blackmail, is still going on in court.Separately, regulatory filings show that on June 6 the Paytm board allotted equity shares to six employees, including Dhawan, who had applied to exercise options vested under the employee stock ownership plan (Esop)."This is likely a precursor to a full and final settlement," said a source aware of the matter. In March, Paytm issued a statement that said "no accused is joining back the company till the time the court matter is concluded."Other persons allotted stock include Sudhandhu Gupta, Nitin Misra and Deepak Abott for a combined 35,434 shares, according to the regulatory filings.Sharma was an early investor in Sheroes, which also counts Binny Bansal and Rajan Anandan as angel investors. It's backed by Pi Ventures, 500 Startups and The HR fund and has raised $4.5 million till date."Sonia joined us a week ago," Sheroes founder Sairee Chahal told ET in an email.Paytm's Sharma is a board member of Applied Life Private Ltd, which runs Sheroes, regulatory filings show. Chahal joined Paytm Payment Bank's board as an additional director in March.Confirming her appointment, Dhawan said, "It's good to be back to the normal work routine. With my experience in building brands and public relations, I am confident to make a new beginning... I am innocent and I expect the court case to conclude in the coming time."The former vice president of communications and public relations at the company had spent nearly five months in jail after Paytm senior vice president and the founder's brother Ajay Shekhar Sharma lodged a first information report (FIR).Granted Bail by Allahabad HCThe first information report (FIR) alleged that Dhawan, along with three other accused, had stolen private data and tried to extort Rs 10 crore. She was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court in March.Dhawan, in her plea before the high court, "claimed innocence and laid stress on the fact that there is nothing concrete emerging against her and it cannot be said that the applicant ever indulged in any illegal activity secretly obtaining any data from the laptop of any device of the informant or his company and she never blackmailed as such."

Trade war effect: Gold may touch $1,390 level as outlook brightens

Escalating trade war between the US and China and shaky global growth outlook has been supporting gold prices in the international markets. Economic indicators are signalling slowdown in the global economy after Donald Trump administration imposed hefty tariffs on China. The World Bank has also slashed its growth forecast for 2019 to 2.60 per cent.Looking at the shaky outlook, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has hinted at the central bank cutting rates to boost growth. After Fed's comments the Dollar Index witnessed profit booking, which boosted gold prices to a one-year peak, before settling at around 3.5-month high. The $1,350 level will now act as a major resistance for gold in the international markets, while the precious metal will find it tough to top Rs 32,950 in the domestic market.Looking at the global scenario, with escalating trade war, US-Iran geopolitical tensions, Brexit and slower global growth prospects, gold may attempt to stage a possible breakout of long-term resistance at $1,350. We expect the commodity to remain positive and test the $1,374-1,390 zone in the coming days.Technical chart of gold69694648 Technical viewGold prices have hit the $1,348 level after holding its crucial support of $1,266 on a closing basis. The metal had corrected from a high of $1,356 made in February. At the MCX, prices have rebounded from the lows of Rs 31,232 to the highs of Rs 32,956.Looking at the weekly charts, there is a possibility of long-term breakout above the $1,350 level, which may extend till the $1,360-$1,389 zone in the coming sessions. Prices will turn negative only when the precious metal closes below $1,324, and in that case it may test support of $1,360-1,292, but chances are minimal. At the MCX, gold is ready for the much-awaited breakout above the Rs 32,950 level, above which, it can rally towards Rs 33,300-33,500. Prices will turn negative only if it sustains below Rs 32,280 and in that case gold may test the Rs 32,000-31,780 zone.Investors can buy and accumulate gold in the range of Rs 32,500-32,400 with strict stop loss below Rs 32,100 on a closing basis for a target of Rs 32,950-33,300.RecommendationsBuy Gold at Rs 32,500-32,400 | Stop Loss below Rs 32,100 | Target Rs 32,950-33,300(Please consult your financial adviser before taking any position in the commodity)

IT is designated safe place for market now: Mahantesh Sabarad

Posted:

I do not see the liquidity crisis going off anytime soon, unless strong action is being taken in the form of certain injection of funds happening directly either in DHFL or indirectly to protect the investors in DHFL instruments, said Mahantesh Sabarad, Head, Retail Research, SBICAP Securities, in an interview with ETNOW.Edited excerpts:What is it that you are making of the entire DHFL issue and how RBI did not quite address the issue. Unlike market expectations, no measure was announced in terms of tackling liquidity issues and systemic crisis within NBFCs. Do you think there is contagion fear in the market that has been playing out for the last two days?RBI has clarified on DHFL issue. There were a lot of questions that were asked and they clarified that they do not have regulatory powers on the housing finance side and therefore the market gave up hope that RBI will do something related to DHFL. But from a macro perspective, what RBI has incidentally done is that it has changed its stance to accommodative. It is going to provide ample liquidity into the system. This will help partly in addressing the systemic issue that created a DHFL like situation in the market. Having said that, the major issue ahead is the DHFL fiasco or the IL&FS kind of liquidity crisis which was engulfing the market. I do not see that going off anytime soon, unless there is a strong action taken in the form of certain injection of funds happening directly either in DHFL or indirectly to protect the investors in DHFL instruments. Do you think the markets are getting worried about the growth in NBFCs with liquidity problem and their inability to raise funds or pricing in some sort of a black swan event in the NBFC space with one or two players which could probably lead to consolidation? What you are alluding to is something the market seems to be now taking cognisance of because it has been too long that the NBFC crisis has been festering in the market and therefore unless a strong action and intervention happens from the regulatory authorities, we would not see any further respite. But consolidation is something that will soon take place. In the past, we had seen that a lot of lending market share had gone away from the banking sector to the NBFC sector. This is a phenomenon that got played out over the past three or four odd years and now we are going to see perhaps some bit of that market share coming back into the banking system while NBFCs will see that consolidation phase happening. Which of the IT names are looking attractive now? IT has been steady but not necessarily the most exciting mover in the market. As far as the IT sector is concerned, given the turmoil that exists in the market, a lot of players would rather want to be in a designated safe place and park their investments in that designated safe place. Right now, the designated safe place for the market seems to be the IT sector. While outwardly there are challenges that we see for some of the IT players in terms of rupee appreciation, in terms of H-1B visa cost going up and general lacklustre activity as far as order wins and deal wins are concerned. But having said that, Indian IT companies particularly have weathered the storm and are moving in the right direction. One of the major things that we have observed over the last one year and I am not going to single out just one particular quarter, but rather over the past one, one-and-a-half odd years, IT companies have been able to get their margins improved despite headwinds that they have faced on the cost particularly on the SG&A side and that is auguring well. The top line guidance that most IT companies have given is also fairly robust in the range of 8.5% thereabouts plus/minus a few percentage points thereabout. To us therefore IT companies have become the designated safe places to get into in such market turmoil conditions. The larger the company, the better it is. We would rather look at an Infy, TCS kind of combo for the recommendations that we give to our retail clients. What do you make of private banks? Would private banks like Axis, ICICI and some of the others still have room for expansion? There is room for expansion. From the capital point of view, the capital buffer that most of these private banks have now got after the clean-up activity, is fairly strong. If you look at Axis, they managed to raise capital more than a year back and while ICICI Bank may not have raised fresh capital, its capital buffer is quite adequate. Even the smaller private sector banks are doing well on this metric. Today, for us, the capital buffer is an important buffer because if the markets are poised for growth, especially in an environment where interest rates have been cut, obviously you will see credit growth pick up. In such a situation, a capital buffer is important to have. Most of these private sector banks will do well in the coming quarters and years. In terms of news flow regarding Indiabulls Group or these groups where a lot of corporate action changes are happening. How would you approach it?M&A activities are bound to pick up especially in a low interest rate environment. Further rate cuts are likely to happen. Typically this is a phase where you will see a lot of M&A activities come in and therefore not really surprised. Many of the highly indebted business groups that you have in the country would look at some of the other mechanism to either deleverage by selling off their stakes or through the merger activity. What you just talked of in terms of Indiabulls and the likely merger with LBB is something that we have seen happen earlier with Bharat Finance and IndusInd Bank. There is that bit of consolidation cum M&A activity and so we are not really surprised and such M&A activities are from a minority investor point of view which is always welcome because they lead to eventually an open offer kind of situation. It is always better for minority shareholders. What is your take on aviation? Both these stocks have run up quite massively over the past year or so. There has been volatility associated with the stock price rise but most investors who would have got into these shares would right now be sitting on a kind of profit. I am not surprised if some broker or some research analyst downgrade from a buy to hold rating. We are not really surprised. As far as the sector is concerned, there is ample room for growth now. One large player like Jet Airways has gone out of operations currently. Although it is struggling to get back, such a situation always augurs well for incumbent players. So SpiceJet and IndiGo have made the most of it. You were one of the first people to start covering the aviation pack. What is the sense that you are getting now that Jet is out of sunning? IndiGo, SpiceJet, the remaining players who gained market share that is probably the one that you would want to chase? That is the natural way to look at the aviation sector. Market share is an important parameter. But having said that, there is also another important parameter to look at. This is the market share which is not often reported -- the market share in the international businesses. There is a lot of traffic growth that we are seeing to and fro from India and there is substantial market share available for Indian carriers to grab. When I say available, what I am actually alluding to is the fact that much of this market share is tightly controlled through various air service agreements that we have with many countries. There is a typical 50-50 kind of sharing of seats that get flown between two sets of countries. The Indian carrier share in that particular market is quite low and it is available. Any of these players -- SpiceJet and IndiGo -- which can offer international destinations or cover international destinations can gain further share. International operations typically are better from profitability point of view relative to the domestic operations but although it varies from season to season, the thumb rule is that the international operations are typically better and more profitable. Therefore I would look at your question and say it is not about domestic market share, it is also about international market share. The player or the airline that can get that market share or grab most of that is the one that would be the natural choice for any analyst pick. Crude is at low levels. Would you be monitoring really what is happening there given the sharp slide in crude?Yes, we do monitor what is happening with OMCs, especially in a situation where crude oil has sharply corrected in the past month and a half. That sharp correction would typically be accompanied by a sharp rise in marketing margins, if not on the refining margin. The refining margin is more a function of what is happening globally in terms of demand-supply situation on finished products. But the marketing margins for oil marketing companies would typically tend to rise. But having said that, there is a lot of fluid news flow that we are seeing as far as OMCs are concerned. Particularly in the past few days, these fluid news flows relate to M&A activity within the oil and gas space, relate to certain regulatory action particularly what we saw in case of GAIL, the PNGRB order on gas transmission prices also in a way affect some of these OMCs, because they too are partially present in that activity. The fluid set of news apart from the crude oil price news is something that is worrying us as far as OMCs are concerned right now. Within PSUs, is SBI an obvious choice or would you be willing to bet on a BOB?I cannot comment on SBI, but yes BOB has been one of our favourites within the PSU pack. Lately the stock has come under pressure. But I guess over a longer term, the investor should be able to ride the merger wave. It has consummated now and therefore better returns can be had in the year ahead. The bank has now been capitalised as well and in an environment where like I just spoke about, in an interest rate cut cycle, most of the banks tend to do well. BOB should also be able to ride the oncoming credit growth that we see. Autos have been seen a slowdown and you used to always track autos. You think autos will once again give you the first signal of any pickup in growth. Will they be the first ones to recover as they were the first ones to see a slowdown? In a way, most of the market participants watch for automobile sales, the monthly sales that are reported and try to figure out where is the economy headed, particularly on the manufacturing side. Manufacturing activity is closely related to what happens in terms of automobile sales. But this is a year of a structural change that we are undergoing. We are jumping directly from Euro IV norm to Euro VI norm and that jump would mean that there are quite a bit of disturbances that are getting created both in terms of costs for automobile companies which either will get passed on or some portion will have to be borne by them and an activity where there will be pre-buying will be induced probably towards the later part of the fiscal year and therefore volumes could sharply recover. But the volume growth may not necessarily be a sign of any activity pick up as far as the economy is concerned or as far as manufacturing activity is concerned. These pre-buying activities are followed by a long pause or fall in automobile sales. This is an unusual year and therefore very difficult to comment on what the automobile companies activity would translate into as far as the economy is concerned.

Top brands like Samsung, Oppo take the phone battle offline

Top brands like Samsung, Oppo and Vivo are scampering energetically to set up brick and mortar shops as the battle for offline channels intensifies to take on online-heavy brands like overall market leader Xiaomi and fast growing Realme, companies and analysts said.Chinese giants Xiaomi and Realme have ridden their presence on ecommerce platforms to grow in the world's fastest growing smartphone market and are now diversifying to the offline space to grow market share. India's brick and mortar shops still account for around 60% of the overall market. However, online heavyweights are up against traditional offline players already strong due to their vast retail reach, penetration in smaller towns and cities, and better understanding and managing of channel ecosystem and heavy investment in retail promotion.HYPERDYNAMIC MARKET"The battle has always been intense in a hyperdynamic India smartphone market. More so with online heavy vendors now shifting focus to tap offline consumers. This will make the scenario more competitive," said Upasana Joshi, associate research manager, client devices, IDC India.CMR's analyst Prabhu Ram said all brands will be aggressively vying to gain market share through offline strategies. He added that Samsung and Oppo will particularly make the battle intense. "Samsung, the traditionally strong offline player, will look at ramping-up on its strengths. Similarly, Oppo will also look at banking on its offline networks for powering its growth in the upcoming quarters," Ram said.As per IDC, Xiaomi led the smartphone market in the January-March quarter with a 30.6% share, followed by Samsung with 22.3%, Vivo with 13%, Oppo with 7.6%, and Realme with 6%. Xiaomi dominated the online channel with 48.6% share. In a bid to avoid the margin game and cost pressures, Xiaomi has been introducing new retail concepts and store formats in place of the traditional offline approach. It is opening vending machine style platforms and is expanding its preferred partner outlets along with exclusive Mi Home stores. It announced the opening of Mi direct stores for tier 3/4 towns focusing on rural expansion."The traditional offline retail models in India are often heavily cost based, with several layers of retail distribution and heavy investments involved, making them a pretty inefficient model," a Xiaomi spokesperson said. This appears to have worked – initially. Having entered the offline market less than two years ago, Xiaomi claims that it has cornered over 20% of the offline market across India.IDC's Joshi, though, said that it will be interesting to see how Mi direct stores generate demand as usually, rural consumers prefer the multi brand outlet experience over exclusive stores. "This would require huge offline marketing initiatives from the brand to attract these consumers."Ram said Xiaomi would have to be wary of competition and focus on getting its offline pathways right. "In particular, Xiaomi would face formidable opposition from brands such as Samsung and Oppo."For Xiaomi, Joshi said, the challenge will lie in expanding footprint to smaller tier 3 and 4 cities which require dedicated effort and costs with heavy promotional activities. "Also, important will be managing the channel ecosystem for price discipline and leakage from one channel to other (online Vs offline) which is on a rise currently," Joshi added.Counterpoint's Anshika Jain said that Xiaomi's offline expansion is led by a regional-specific approach as it mainly focuses on tier 2 and tier 3 areas of Southern India. "It is targeting smaller towns and coming with new formats and concepts to counter the threat from established players who are strong in offline."Jain added that while Xiaomi is trying a different approach, it will take some time for them to establish the offline channel properly at a time when Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo are expanding aggressively to maintain their lead. 'It would not be a cakewalk for Xiaomi."Xiaomi is aiming to open over 10,000 retail stores across its four offline channels in the nation by end of the year 2019, and is expecting 50% of smartphone sales from offline by this year-end.Realme, which started as an online exclusive brand, is also taking a regional approach and focusing mainly Northern India and some focus on parts of East and West, Counterpoint's Jain said.Madhav Sheth, CEO of Realme, told ET that the plan is to have presence across 20,000 outlets in 150 cities by this year-end. "We have a one-layer distribution and lowest margins for trade. We have a pull strategy for the channels."CMR's Ram said that Realme has the potential to replicate its online success in offline networks. "It has executed its market strategy, thus far, pitch-perfect, getting its product, pricing and messaging right."Counterpoint's Jain said that more than one-third of sales for Realme came from the offline channel in March this year.Similarly, Xiaomi scored their highest offline sales that made up 40% of all sales in March. "Vivo's offline sale contribution is 90% and more than 80% for Samsung and Oppo," Jain added.PRODUCT, TRAINING & VISIBILITYSamsung, which already has the widest and deepest footprint with 1,80,000 retail points in the country, is further expanding the offline reach in the country."The big requirement for us is to continuously respond to request from retailers to be available for them with product, training and visibility," Ranjivjit Singh, chief marketing officer, Samsung India, told ET, adding that Indian the consumer still wants to be served and explained about products which are only possible through physical stores. "We don't know what the magic figure is, but we are way ahead of others in terms of availability."With around 70,000 store outlets, Chinese smartphone maker Vivo doubled its market share in the January-March quarter on the back of a refreshed product portfolio and aggressive marketing strategy."We have a strong distribution network to ensure that all outlets are well served. With the competition, you will always need to be on your toes, therefore you will need to see how to counter it. It could be margins, visibility, stock placements. If market dynamics change, you will have to tailor your strategy. We think with our strategy we can continue seeing success," Nipun Marya, director, brand strategy, Vivo India, told ET.Marya said that the offline market has always been competitive. "The market is tough…one or two brands coming and entering may not make an impact."Another BBK Electronics-owned company, Oppo, is also making investments to grow its offline footprint from the existing 60,000 outlets. "Offline will be our most important channel. We are improving everywhere in the channel from dealers to counters. There's a lot of space to improve," Will Yang, CMO, South Asia at Oppo, told ET.Yang also acknowledged the competition in the market and said, "Entry of new players will encourage us to do better.
