Red Cross Shows A City Getting Nuked With An Animated Video

Posted: 17 Oct 2019 02:00 AM PDT

Business Insider: An animated video from the Red Cross shows a city getting nuked, and it's a terrifying look at what happens when the government can't save you

* A video from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) shows what would happen if a nuclear bomb struck a major city.
* The video predicts that trees would "snap like toothpicks," people would be "tossed around like a grain of dust," and houses would "collapse like they're made of cards."
* The ICRC expects that there would be no help for hours — perhaps days — after an explosion, since electricity would be cut and medical professionals could be wounded or killed.

"One moment you're on your way to work. The next moment, you're on fire."

That's the horrifying scenario outlined in a new animated video from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The organization teamed up with Kurzgesagt, a Munich-based animation studio, to demonstrate what would happen if a city's downtown were the target of a nuclear attack.

The animation paints a gruesome portrait of the damage, which is divided into three phases: a deadly fireball and flash of light, a powerful shockwave, and the resulting injuries and radiation exposure.

Here Is How Russia Or China Could Sink A U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier

Posted: 17 Oct 2019 01:00 AM PDT

Reuters

Robert Farley, National Interest: Yes, Russia or China Could Sink a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier. Here's How.

How vulnerable are America's carriers?

Aircraft carriers have been the primary capital ship of naval combat since the 1940s, and remain the currency of modern naval power. But for nearly as long as carriers have existed, navies have developed plans to defeat them. The details of these plans have changed over time, but the principles remain the same. And some have argued that the balance of military technology is shifting irrevocably away from the carrier, driven primarily by Chinese and Russian innovation.

Russian War Correspondent Does A Full Walk Through A Previously 'Classified' US Facility In Manbij, Syria

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 11:00 PM PDT

Zero Hedge: Full Video Inside 'Secretive' US Special Forces Base In Syria Released By Russian Media

After early this week American forces hastily abandoned their base in Manbij amid a general US draw down from the region, and a Damascus-Syrian Kurdish deal for reunion to fight the invading Turks, hawkish CNN pundit Michael Weiss lamented that "the Russian takeover of the U.S. base in Manbij is the first instance of Moscow claiming an abandoned U.S. military installation since World War II" (though Vietnam may have actually been the last instance).

The Russians did immediately roll in to Manbij, surprisingly in some degree of coordination with the Pentagon. A US defense official admitted, "It is essentially a handover" and added, "it's a quick out, not something that will include walk-throughs, etc. Everything is about making out with as much as possible of our things while destroying any sensitive equipment that cannot be moved."

WNU Editor: Usually when a place like this base in Syria is abandoned, the looters move in within minutes. They did not do so this time, which tells me that there was some coordination between the U.S. and Russia so that when the Americans left, the Russians literally showed up a few minutes later.

What Is More Important To Russian President Putin: Relations With Saudi Arabia Or Iran?

Stephen Bryen, Asia Times: What is more important to Putin: Saudi or Iran?

The wild card is not Russia or Saudi Arabia, but the US, which has lost a lot of influence and credibility in the region

Russian President Vladimir Putin has just wrapped up an important visit to Saudi Arabia.

From the immediate Russian and Saudi point of view, the visit was fruitful, yielding 21 important agreements and undertakings, and getting support for significant Saudi investments in Russia, including investments by the Saudi Arabian Public Fund of US$10 billion for joint foreign direct investment projects in Russia.

Nothing was said about weapons sales, but there can be little doubt that Putin raised the issue privately with the Saudi leadership.

Gallop: 52% Of Americans Now Support Trump's Impeachment And Removal

Gallop: Congress Approval, Support for Impeaching Trump Both Up

* 25% approve of Congress; up from 18% last month; Trump's approval at 39%
* 52% of Americans now support Trump's impeachment and removal
* Impeachment support reflects growth in support among independents, Dems

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives work through an impeachment inquiry regarding alleged abuses of office by President Donald Trump, approval of Congress is now at 25%. That is up from 18% in September, prior to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announcing the impeachment inquiry following news of possible wrongdoing by the president in communications with Ukraine.

The increase in approval of Congress over the past month is the result of a 15-percentage-point jump among Democrats (from 19% to 34%) as well as a smaller increase among independents (from 19% to 25%). Republicans' rating of Congress is stable, at 17%.

More than half of Republicans agree with President Trump's decision to pull troops out of northeastern Syria, according to a new Economist/YouGov weekly tracking poll.

Of respondents who self-identified as Republicans, 25 percent said they strongly approve of the troop withdrawal, while 32 percent said they somewhat approve. A combined 26 percent of the Republican respondents said they disapprove on some level while 18 percent had no opinion.

The poll comes as Trump has faced fierce criticism from a number of Republicans, including some of his most ardent allies, over the troop withdrawal.

Pelosi, Trump Exchange 'Meltdown' Accusations Over Meeting On U.S. Policy In Syria. Democrats Walk Out Of The White House

CNBC: Democrats say they left White House meeting on Syria after Trump 'meltdown'

* Democratic congressional leaders say they walked out of a meeting with President Donald Trump after what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called a "meltdown" by the president.
* Earlier, the House passed a resolution opposing Trump's move to pull U.S. forces from northern Syria.
* The bipartisan vote comes amid mounting backlash to the president's action, which critics say left Kurdish troops allied with the U.S. vulnerable to a Turkish offensive.

Democratic congressional leaders said they walked out of a White House meeting Wednesday on Syria after what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called a "meltdown."

After top Democrats left the bipartisan meeting with Trump, Pelosi told reporters that the president appeared "shaken up" by a House vote condemning his decision to remove U.S. forces from northern Syria. The House approved the resolution in an overwhelming 354-60 vote, as even a majority of Trump's Republican Party supported it.

"That's why we couldn't continue in the meeting because he was just not relating to the reality of it," Pelosi said outside the White House, in only the latest instance of a gathering between the president and Democrats blowing up.

Matthew Petti, National Interest: Is Trump Really Pulling Out of Syria

The United States has thrown open the door for Turkey to fight the Kurds, but the counter-Russia and counter-Iran mission continues.

Congress and presidential candidates are debating over President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw U.S. troops from northern Syria, allowing Turkey to battle the Syrian Kurds. But it's not clear the United States is really leaving Syria after all, even though its has outsourced control over former ISIS territories to Turkey.

Lawmakers voted 354–60 to condemn the withdrawal less than twenty-four hours after Democratic candidates clashed over the blame for the bloodshed in Syria during Tuesday night's presidential debate. Trump touted his decision to pull U.S. forces out of the Middle Eastern country last week and during a press conference today bragged about how the decision was "strategically brilliant."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States carried out a secret cyber operation against Iran in the wake of the Sept. 14 attacks on Saudi Arabia's oil facilities, which Washington and Riyadh blame on Tehran, two U.S. officials have told Reuters.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the operation took place in late September and took aim at Tehran's ability to spread "propaganda."

One of the officials said the strike affected physical hardware, but did not provide further details.

The attack highlights how President Donald Trump's administration has been trying to counter what it sees as Iranian aggression without spiraling into a broader conflict.

State-Owned Turkish Bank Halkbank Charged In $20B Scheme To Skirt US Sanctions On Iran

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 01:21 PM PDT

DW: US charges Turkey's Halkbank with violating Iran sanctions

The US accused high-ranking government officials in both Iran and Turkey of participating in and protecting the scheme. It comes as NATO allies Washington and Ankara are at odds over Turkey's military offensive in Syria.

US prosecutors on Tuesday filed criminal charges against Turkey's state-run Halkbank for allegedly taking part in a multibillion-dollar scheme to evade sanctions on Iran.

The indictment is the latest development in a years-long criminal case that began with the arrest of Reza Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader accused of playing a key role in the sanctions evasion scheme.

Zarrab pleaded guilty and testified at the trial of a Halkbank deputy general manager. He told authorities that Iran was getting around US sanctions through a complicated scheme involving gold transactions with the help of the bank and the Turkish government.

Donald Trump launched a new defense of his pullout of American forces from northern Syria Wednesday, saying the situation is 'strategically brilliant for the U.S.' and dismissing the Kurds as 'no angels.'

Speaking in the Oval Office, he said the invasion of northern Syria by Turkey's military was 'not our problem' and claimed: 'The Kurds are much safer right now.'

Despite sending his vice president Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Ankara to hold urgent talks with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on a ceasefire, Trump described the fighting in northern Syria as 'not our problem.'

'If Turkey goes into Syria it is between Turkey and Syria. It's not our problem,' he said.

Turkey's Invasion Of Syria -- News Updates October 16, 2019

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 10:56 AM PDT

CNN: Erdogan says Turkey will 'never declare a ceasefire'

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed US calls for a ceasefire in northern Syria and said that he's not worried about American-imposed sanctions, or the advancement of Russian-backed Syrian forces toward the Turkish border.

Speaking to journalists traveling on his presidential plane following a visit to Azerbaijan Tuesday, Erdogan said a ceasefire was off the table. "Declare a ceasefire, they say. We will never declare a ceasefire," Erdogan said. "We do not sit at the table with terrorist organizations."

Erdogan's comments come as Russian-backed Syrian regime troops on Tuesday gained control of the town of Manbij and surrounding areas, until recently an active US military outpost.

Russia has stepped up its role in the Syrian conflict by deploying military police to the country's north -- filling a vacuum left by the withdrawal of US troops from the area.

North Korean state media have released politically significant propaganda pictures of leader Kim Jong-un riding a white horse on the highest peak of the Korean peninsula, which is considered to be sacred by many Koreans.

Scenic images of Mr Kim riding the horse through snowy fields and woods of Mount Paektu, the spiritual homeland of the Kim dynasty, have his supporters convinced that the leader is planning a "great operation", according to North Korean state media.

It was unclear what the operation might involve, but Mr Kim had often reportedly made trips to the sacred mountain at times of major policy endeavours, including the 2013 execution of his powerful uncle and his 2018 entrance into diplomacy with Seoul and Washington.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has slapped down a call from US President Donald Trump for a ceasefire in north-eastern Syria, as Ankara faces growing condemnation over its military offensive there.

Turkey pressed ahead with its operation on Tuesday (local time) despite the US imposing sanctions on three Turkish ministers and two government departments, and hiking up steel tariffs.

Russia is the latest country to weigh in on Turkey's incursion into Syria, making its strongest criticisms since Mr Erdogan launched the operation last week.

FOX News: Turkey holding 50 US nuclear bombs 'hostage' at air base, report says

Officials are reviewing plans to evacuate up to 50 U.S. nuclear bombs that have long been stored at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey in the wake of Ankara's military offensive in northern Syria, according to a report.

The weapons are now essentially "hostage" to Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a senior official told The New York Times on Monday.

The Cold War-era B61 nuclear bombs are said to be 100-250 miles from the Syrian border, according to The Guardian. A former U.S. official told the outlet that Turkish diplomats responded to suggestions about moving the bombs by saying Turkey would start to develop its own.

Indian economy is showing telltale signs of Lipstick Effect

Posted:

It's the Lipstick Effect, stupid!Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad may have been forced to withdraw the statement in which he had cited the Rs 120 crore business done by three Bollywood movies on a single day to suggest strength in the fundamentals of the Indian economy, but he was actually articulating a real economic phenomenon playing out in India currently. It indeed is puzzling to see Bollywood keep the cash registers ringing at the Box Office when most segments of the economy are showing telltale signs of slowdown. It does not mean the movie industry is defying the slowdown. It's the 'Lipstick Effect' at play – an economic phenomenon in which consumers spend money on smaller indulgences in times of recessions and economic downturns, or when they have less cash.Robert Browning tried to define it when he said: "What youth deemed crystal, age finds out was dew."This trend is usually noticed more regularly in luxury items of lesser ticket prices. "The Lipstick Effect shows up in the economy in one form or the other most of the times. It becomes more pronounced in times of slowdown, particularly in discretionary spend. This is exactly the situation we are in today," Amit Khurana, Head of Equities at Dolat Capital, told ETMarkets.com."Yes, the Indian economy is currently facing this situation partially," says G Chokkalingam, Founder of Equinomics Research and Advisory. "Finding growth in this market is a difficult task."During an economic slowdown, consumers prefer items with small ticket sizes or cut down on consumption. They stick to favourite brands, but buy less.Media, entertainment, travel and leisure-linked stocks are all showing this effect, which has been most pronounced in multiplex stocks. Shares of PVR have risen 11.94 per cent on year-to-date basis till October 14, while those of Inox Leisure have gained 34.86 per cent to hover around their 52-week high levels.A quick glance at 93-odd discretionary stocks from sectors like media, entertainment, leisure, multiplex, restaurant chains and theme parks showed 78 of them have failed to deliver positive results this year, while eight have registered growth in double digits.Leading the wealth destroyers was Cox & Kings, which eroded 98 per cent of investor money on a year-to-date basis. It was followed by Coffee day Enterprises, Eros International Media, Adlabs Entertainment, BAG Films, Sri Adhikari Brothers and Hotel Leela Ventures, which have halved their stock prices.Among the big wealth creators, Cinevista has risen 141 per cent, Jump Networks 130 per cent, Tips Industries 18 per cent, Mac Charles India 16 per cent, VST Industries 14 per cent and Godfrey Phillips 10 per cent."Do not paint all stocks with the same brush. Not all media and entertainment companies appeal directly to consumers," said Khurana. These stocks have taken a hit mostly because of derating, downgrading, overleveraging and corporate governance Issues."It will not be fair to say that these stocks have been wealth destroyers on an aggregate basis. Stock-specific reasons have kept investors' risk appetite subdued," he said. What's fuelling rally in multiplex stocks?Movies like Kabir Singh, War, Uri, Bharat and Mission Mangal each grossed over Rs 200 crore on Box Office this year. Similarly, Kesari, Total Dhamal, Super 30, Chhichore, Dream Girl, Gully Boy and Saaho made their way into the Rs 100 crore club. This encapsulates a trend of consumers' shift into smaller indulgences from expensive discretionary spends that benefit hotel, travel and leisure sectors."Movie is small-ticket luxury in India, while travel, hotels and amusement or theme parks are not small-ticket consumption. Also, a movie theatre is located nearby, requiring less commuting cost. High Box Office collections are a classic example of the Lipstick Effect at play in the economy," says Khurana of Dolat Capital. The Way ForwardInvestors are keeping a keen eye on India Inc's September quarter earnings. Sectors like banking, telecom, metals, resources, IT and pharma have been signalling slower growth in recent times.Khuarana says a stock like Bata or quick-service restaurant chains should benefit from this effect. "Footwear as a sector should continue to outperform on the consumption side. Watch out for the earnings numbers from PVR and Jubilant," he said.Chokkalingam advised investors to refrain from buying richly-valued stocks. He said MNC pharma could be a good bet. "Unless corporate earnings draw investors to other sectors, FMCG and leisure stocks will continue to head northward," he said.

Sitharaman makes a strong pitch to investors

WASHINGTON: Investors can find no better place in the world than India that has a democracy loving and capitalist respecting environment, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said. She also assured international investors at an interaction session at the IMF's headquarters that the government was continuously working to bring reforms."It (India) is one of the fastest growing (economies) even today. It has the best skilled manpower and a government that is continuously doing what is required in the name of reforms, above all democracy and rule of law," Sitharaman said on Wednesday.Responding to a question on why investors should allocate funds for India, she said that even if the court system is a bit delayed, India is a transparent and open society. The rule of law works and there are a lot of reforms happening, even those to cut down delays, she said."So you will not have anything better... democracy loving, capitalist respecting environment... in India," Sitharaman said at the event hosted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in association with the US India Strategic and Partnership Forum.Responding to questions from major insurance companies, who urged her to remove the cap on investment in this sector, she said the government needs to understand what the expectations of the sector are other than removing of the cap.Sitharaman said she would be quite open to it and they could send her the details. The Union finance minister, however, said she will not be able to give them an assurance at this point of time, but will work on the matter.Asserting that the government is engaging with everyone on a weekly basis and there is no trust deficit with the corporate sector and investors, she said there is a greater understanding that this government is willing to hear and also wanting to respond. The government is committed to maintaining fiscal deficit in India, she said.To a question on the slowdown in the Indian economy, the finance minister said the government is taking steps to address problems in the "stressed" sectors."Though the budget was presented in July, in a year when there was interim budget present before the election, we didn't wait for the next budget to come in February of 2020, almost on a 10-day interval, we have been announcing one or the other intervention with which each of the stressed areas can be addressed," she said.Overall in order to boost consumption, the government has very clearly said public expenditure for infrastructure will be clearly front loaded, Sitharaman said."Similarly, for increasing money in the hands of the people so that consumption can improve, I've requested all the building sector banks together with their partners, non-banking, financial companies to reach out to villages, reach out to districts and extend every kind of credit that they would want," she said. The two-prong approach makes sure consumption is boosted, both through spending on public infrastructure or by putting actual money in the hands of the people, and ensures the stress, which is specific to some sectors, is addressed, Sitharaman said. This has to be a continuous system till the time the economy really shows substantial uptick, the Union finance minister said.Earlier in the day in New York, US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) in partnership with FICCI, Bank of America and Citibank hosted an interaction with institutional investors.Senior members of the New York financial services industry were present for this round table that included insurance companies, debt restructuring companies, private equity, equity investors and banks.Sitharaman's message to the industry reiterated India's commitment to transparent policy-making, implementing banking reforms in close collaboration with the RBI, creating liquidity flow, exploring ways to bring in private sector investments and deepening economic reforms."Our discussions with Minister Sitharaman were extremely candid and positive, building upon some extremely positive reforms that the Government has undertaken in six months," Mukesh Aghi, USISPF President said."The Modi 2.0 government has demonstrated its willingness to deepen its collaboration with industry and create a level playing field for foreign investors. Most significantly, the industry has welcomed lower corporate tax rates in India," he said.Aghi said the move encourages greater investments from American firms who are already betting big on India."It was one of the long-standing asks from Forum members and included in the recommendations that we provided the government," he said.

What Altico's resolution plan looks like

Posted:

Real-estate focused Altico Capital submitted its resolution plan to lenders as the steering committee led by SBI met the management on Wednesday late evening. The non-banking finance company has proposed to repay in full in a staggered manner over next five years, two people with the direct knowledge of the matter told ET. While banks may be repaid using funds from proposed asset monetization, mutual funds like Nippon India or UTI MF could be issued upfront bonds. "The company believes in reviving its financials through asset monetisation as they bat for their expertise in dealing with real estate builders," said one of the persons cited above. "The equity value should go up only when lenders are paid off, and that is how Alitco intends to do," said the executive present in the meeting.Mashreq Bank, Yes Bank, Bank of Baroda are among other lenders in the committee of eight-nine such banks. There are over two dozen lenders that lent the company, backed by foreign private equity investors including Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Clearwater Capital and Varde. Altico did not reply to ET's query on the matter. Individual lenders could not be contacted immediately for comments. The lenders may take a few weeks to give their feedback on the proposed resolution plan. In the meeting, lenders asked Altico not to stop loan disbursements to good and running projects said another person. If it pauses, those constructions too will be stuck leading to further chocking of cash flows in the company. Altico has collected about Rs 100 crore in past one month as repayments from its borrowers. The monthly inflows should remain in the range of Rs 80-100 crore, sources said.Altico credit exposure is yet to turn non-performing asset in bank books. The company has about Rs 800 crore repayment liabilities until December. Its total outstanding debt stands at Rs 4,361.5 crore. Altico's asset sales could immediately fetch at least Rs 2,000 crore as the company aims to sell some of its real estate projects. After the latest rating downgrades, some lenders recalled about Rs 1,500 crore worth of credit lines earlier committed to Altico, putting pressure on the non-bank lender to repay immediately. In the resolution plan, it sought cancellation of such recall notice citing the existing liquidity squeeze and future growth plans. It is also expected to diversify into retail lending in the housing finance sector. Also, Altico insisted on it existing shareholders' commitment in running the business.Altico last month defaulted on interest payments of Rs 19.97 crore, causing its liquidity position to worsen. Alvarez & Marsal has suggested it remain a going concern by conserving cash and quickly sell assets, helping draw a private equity investor. SSG Capital, Brookfield, Cerberus, and Apollo Global are among private equity investors keen on a stake in the company.

Realty market sentiments sink to a new low

Posted:

BENGALURU: The outlook for Indian real estate fell to a 42 low in the quarter to September from a preceding quarter, a level previously seen during the heightened uncertainty period of pre-election in the first quarter of 2014 and the demonetisation period, found a jointly conducted survey by industry lobby Ficci, National Real Estate Development Council (Nardeco) and real estate services firm Knight Frank.According to the above survey, the future sentiment score also dropped to an all-time low at 49 in Q3 2019. The outlook for the coming six months, has also turned 'pessimistic' for the first time, a clear indication that the sector is under immense pressure. Drying credit flow to developers due to the NBFC crisis and slowing down of the economy has all negatively impacted the current sentiment scores," said the survey. "It is more significant to note that, for the first time, the stakeholders are wary regards the future six months for the real estate sector and the overall economy, thus pushing the sentiment score in the red. The supply-side sops will not be enough till the time demand is revived by putting money in the hands of the consumer and his confidence is restore.," said Shishir Baijal, Chairman and Managing Director of Knight Frank India. A score of over 50 signifies 'Optimism' in sentiments, a score of 50 means the sentiment is 'Same' or 'Neutral', while a score of below 50 shows 'Pessimism'. It said that weak demand, inventory overhang, developer defaults coupled with the worsening of the crisis engulfing nonbanking financial companies (NBFCs) had dried up funding for the sector, resulting in many real estate projects being stuck in the past one year."From the supply side, with the short-term liquidity squeeze prevailing in the economy, even positive net worth companies across industries are turning into negative balance sheet. The current economic scenario makes it the right time for RBI to announce its one time roll over scheme similar to what was rolled out during the Lehman crisis period in 2009 under the global slowdown scenario," said Niranjan Hiranandani, National President – NAREDCO & Founder & MD of Hiranandani Group saidThe outlook for the residential new launches, sales and price appreciation have yet again taken a hit in Q3 2019, clearly stating that the slew of measures taken by the by the government have not infused any confidence in the stakeholders. As many as 63% respondents said that the economic situation would be the same or even worsen in the coming six months. Stakeholders maintain a conservative outlook for the funding scenario, with 73% expecting it to worsen in the next six months, survey. The future sentiment score of 51 of the financial institutions is also the lowest since the Modi government has come to power. The liquidity crunch brought about by defaults of the IL&FS group, have cautioned the lenders against their exposure to the real estate sector. Plummeting to a 22-quarter low, the lenders are exercising caution for the coming six months. However, sentiments toward the commercial real estate sector have remained steady, with the outlook for the new office supply strong for the coming six months, with 82% of the respondents believing that the coming six months will see new supply additions across the major office markets in the country. "Instead of incremental small steps, it is time for a quantum leap on policy planning and implementation. The Government needs to ensure a stable predictable business friendly environment that not just ensures economic growth but also leads to job creation and income stability," Sanjay Dutt, MD & CEO, Tata Realty & Infrastructure and Chairman of FICCI Real Estate Committee, said. The outlook for the office leasing activity remains unchanged in Q3 2019, with 79% of the stakeholders opining that leasing activity will remain steady or may even improve in the coming six months mentioned the report. However, real estate developers are pessimistic regarding the revival of the sector in the coming six months, with the future sentiment index score going in the red in Q3 2019 at 47 points, an eight-quarter low, due to liquidity crunch, high borrowing cost due to NBFC crisis, and inventory overhang.

Netflix says India's mobile-only plan successful, will test it other markets

BENGALURU: Netflix said its mobile-only subscription plan for India is better than expected and will look at testing it in other markers with similar conditions. The comments were made by Chief Product Officer Gregory Peters on earnings conference call with analysts in the US on Wednesday. India is seeing the rise of streaming wars in India with over a dozen players hoping to cash in on the content boom. "So, we've been very, very happy with the mobile plan. It's actually performing better than we tested. We'll look at testing that in other markets, too, because we think there are other markets which have similar conditions that make it likely that, that's going to be successful for us there as well," he said.In July, Netflix unveiled its cheapest plan - Rs 199 a month - but only for smartphones and tablets to expand its subscriber base in the country and to better compete with the likes of Hotstar."Just to talk a little bit about where we are in India, I mean again, we think about revenue as a guiding principle for us. We do these different tests and try to figure out what is the right set of plans that have the right benefits, the right features that are delivered at the right price for the subscribers in any given market," said Peters. He said Netflix is going to look at other plan structures, other feature value benefits where the company might see different market conditions that will work there. Without further sharing specifics about the new subscription plans, Peters said Netflix will respond to what consumers want in those new markets want."We'll see them as we roll out, and we'll respond to them based on what our consumers in those markets, our members to be in those markets are telling us is working or not," he said.

However, finance ministry officials later raised over 80 objections to the proposal prepared by the telecom ministry.Prasad said that the government is also working to resolve problem in the telecom sector, but it also expects service provider to be responsible by upgrading their network and ensuring that customers are satisfied with the services. The minister did not give any timeline for the launch of 5G services in India, while the government has officially set target to roll out the next generation services by 2020.Prasad, however, said he would like India become a hub of 5G intellectual property rights and need to work carefully keeping in mind the development of global ecosystem."We have given spectrum for demonstration purposes. I would like India to become good hub of 5G IP but we have to work carefully as to what kind of ecosystem develops in the world as far as 5G is concerned. Will it come in one year or two year, it will create opportunity, it will create problem also," he said.He said that there are issues around 5G technology like who will be responsible if a driverless cars causes an accident."There are many issues of 5G. Our Prime Minister is very clear that both artificial intelligence and 5G must be used for healthcare, education, in agriculture and we are very keenly pushing it," Prasad said.

996 culture catching up in India, shows Godrej Interio survey

Posted:

When spending quality time with family and friends, more than one in three (34%) of Indian working professionals are not able to dedicate enough time to their children due to work pressure, finds a survey by Godrej called 'Make Space For Life'. The study also finds that most Indians acknowledged the failure to find balance and time for their family, friends and passion. The findings also indicate that the 996 culture is slowly catching up in India. The number refers to working from 9 am to 9 pm six days a week and is said to be common among China's big technology companies and startups. "Today's working professionals are losing out significantly on creating strong family ties or spending quality time with friends, due to the pressures of demanding work lives. As opposed to the belief that technology is a facilitator, new-age technology plays an important role in the escalation of this trend," said Anil Mathur, chief operating officer, Godrej Interio. "Such insights also reflect the work-life balance dynamics in the lives of Indians," he added. The study revealed that due to work pressure, more than 64% of respondents feel that they are not able to dedicate enough time to their family whereas 28% are not able to spend quality time with their spouse. Similarly, 21.2% and 16.2 % of the respondents feel that they are not able to dedicate enough time to their friends and parents respectively. It showed that 61% of respondents do not have time to spend on their passions and as many people feel that they are not able to dedicate enough time to their passion due to family responsibilities.Alarmingly, more than 56.7% of respondents rate their work-life balance as terrible with 68.2% feeling that they miss out on living life on their terms, and 56.5% of respondents feel that they are not able to dedicate enough time to their passion due to their professional life. The survey was conducted among 1,300 people living across 13 cities including Chandigarh, Mumbai, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Delhi, and Bengaluru.

High Anxiety in Brussels: Will Brexit Deal Be Clinched?

Posted: 17 Oct 2019 01:28 AM PDT

BRUSSELS (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his 27 counterparts from across the European Union were converging on Brussels on Thursday for a summit they hope will finally lay to rest the acrimony and frustration of a three-year divorce fight.

Yet even before dawn, Johnson already had to deal with a serious setback when his Northern Irish government allies said they would not back his compromise proposals. The prime minister needs all the support he can get to push any deal past a deeply divided parliament.

It only added to the high anxiety that reigned on Thursday morning, with the last outstanding issues of the divorce papers still unclear.

Technical negotiators again went into the night Wednesday to fine tune customs and sales tax regulations that will have to regulate trade in goods between the Northern Ireland and Ireland — where the U.K. and the EU share their only land border.

And they were set to continue right up to the summit’s mid-afternoon opening. If a deal is agreed on during the two-day summit, Johnson hopes to present it to Britain’s Parliament at a special sitting Saturday.

After months of gloom over the stalled Brexit process, European leaders have sounded upbeat this week. French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday that “I want to believe that a deal is being finalized,” while German Chancellor Angela Merkel said negotiations were “in the final stretch.”

Johnson — who took office in July vowing Britain would finally leave the EU on Oct. 31, come what may — was slightly more cautious. He likened Brexit to climbing Mount Everest, saying the summit was in sight, though still shrouded in cloud.

Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party added to those clouds early Thursday. DUP leader Arlene Foster and the party’s parliamentary chief Nigel Dodds said they “could not support what is being suggested on customs and consent issues,” referring to a say the Northern Irish authorities might have in future developments.

Both the customs and consent arrangements are key to guaranteeing an open border between the U.K.’s Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland — they main obstacle to a Brexit deal.

Foster and Dodds said they would continue to work with the U.K. government to get a “sensible” deal. The problem is that the closer Johnson aligns himself with the DUP, the further he removes himself from the EU, leaving him walking a political tightrope.

Brexit negotiations have been here before — seemingly closing in on a deal that is dashed at the last moment. But hopes have risen that this time may be different. Though with Britain’s Oct. 31 departure date looming and just hours to go before the EU summit, focus was on getting a broad political commitment, with the full legal details to be hammered out later. That could mean another EU summit on Brexit before the end of the month.

So far, all plans to keep an open and near-invisible border between the two have hit a brick wall of opposition from the DUP.

U.S. Delegation to Seek a Cease-Fire With Turkey and the Kurds

Posted: 17 Oct 2019 01:19 AM PDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior U.S. delegation faces the herculean task of pressuring Turkey to accept a cease-fire in Northern Syria, hours after President Donald Trump declared the U.S. has no stake in defending Kurdish fighters who died by the thousands as America’s partners against Islamic State extremists.

Vice President Mike Pence, heading a U.S. delegation that includes Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien, is set to arrive in Turkey Thursday afternoon, a day after Trump dismissed the very crisis he sent his aides on an emergency mission to douse.

Trump suggested Wednesday that a Kurdish group was a greater terror threat than the Islamic State group, and he welcomed the efforts of Russia and the Assad government to fill the void left after he ordered the removal of nearly all U.S. troops from Syria amid a Turkish assault on the Kurds.

“Syria may have some help with Russia, and that’s fine,” Trump said. “They’ve got a lot of sand over there. So, there’s a lot of sand that they can play with.”

He added: “Let them fight their own wars.”

The split-screen foreign policy moment proved difficult to reconcile and came during perhaps the darkest moment for the modern U.S.-Turkey relationship and a time of trial for Trump and his Republican Party allies. Severe condemnation of Trump’s failure to deter Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s assault on the Kurds, and his subsequent embrace of Turkish talking points about the former U.S. allies, sparked bipartisan outrage in the U.S. and calls for swift punishment for the NATO ally.

Republicans and Democrats in the House, bitterly divided over the Trump impeachment inquiry, banded together for an overwhelming 354-60 denunciation of the U.S. troop withdrawal. Many lawmakers expressed worry that the withdrawal may lead to revival of IS as well as Russian presence and influence in the area — in addition to the slaughter of many Kurds.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., publicly broke with Trump to call the U.S. relationship with the Kurds “a great alliance.”

“I’m sorry that we are where we are. I hope the vice president and the secretary of state can somehow repair the damage,” McConnell said Wednesday.

The White House disclosed that Trump had both cajoled and threatened Erdogan in an unusual letter last week, urging him to act only in “the right and humane way” in Syria. The letter was sent the same day Erdogan launched the major offensive against the Kurds.

Trump started on a positive note by suggesting they “work out a good deal,” but then talked about crippling economic sanctions and concluded that the world “will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don’t happen. Don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be a fool!”

Trump did place some sanctions Monday on Turkey for the offensive. But as his emissaries were departing to threaten even tougher actions in the days ahead, Trump appeared to undercut their negotiating stance. He said the U.S. has no business in the region — and not to worry about the Kurdish fighters.

“If Turkey goes onto Syria, that’s between Turkey and Syria, it’s not between Turkey and the United States,” Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

As he seeks to push Erdogan to agree to a cease-fire, Pence will confront doubts about American credibility and his own, as an emissary of an inconsistent president.

“Given how erratic President Trump’s decision-making process and style has been, it’s just hard to imagine any country on the receiving end of another interlocutor really being confident that what Pence and Pompeo are delivering reflects Trump’s thinking at the moment or what it will be in the future,” said Jeffrey Prescott, the Obama administration’s senior director for Iran, Iraq, Syria and the Gulf states on the National Security Council and a former deputy national security adviser to former Vice President Joe Biden.

The withdrawal is the worst decision of Trump’s presidency, said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who meets often with the president and is one of his strongest and most important supporters in Congress.

“To those who think the Mideast doesn’t matter to America, remember 9/11 — we had that same attitude on 9/10/2001,” Graham said

Even before Trump’s comments, Erdogan had publicly stated that he will be undeterred by the sanctions and resisted calls for a cease-fire Wednesday, saying the fighting would end only if Kurdish fighters abandoned their weapons and retreated from positions near the Turkish border. If Pence can persuade Turkey to agree to a cease-fire, which few U.S. officials believed was likely, experts warn it will not erase the signal Trump’s action sent to American allies across the globe or the opening already being exploited by Russia in the region.

“Deterring an action that hasn’t yet been taken is almost always easier than trying to coerce someone to reverse an action that they’ve already committed blood, treasure and honor to,” said John Hannah, former national security adviser for former Vice President Dick Cheney and a senior counselor for Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

In public appearances, Trump said he was fulfilling a campaign promise to bring U.S. troops home from “endless wars” in the Middle East — casting aside criticism that a sudden U.S. withdrawal from Syria betrays the Kurdish fighters, stains U.S. credibility around the world and opens an important region to Russia.

“We have a situation where Turkey is taking land from Syria. Syria’s not happy about it. Let them work it out,” Trump said. “They have a problem at a border. It’s not our border. We shouldn’t be losing lives over it.”

After the House voted to condemn the withdrawal, congressional leaders of both parties went to the White house for a briefing, which grew contentious, with Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi trading jabs. The Democrats said they walked out when the meeting devolved into an insult-fest.

“What we witnessed on the part of the president was a meltdown,” Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters, saying Trump appeared visibly “shaken up” over the House vote. And Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York criticized Trump for not having an adequate plan to deal with IS fighters who have been held by the Kurds. He said the meeting “was not a dialogue, this was sort of a diatribe, a nasty diatribe not focused on the facts.”

White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham called Pelosi’s action “baffling but not surprising.” She said the speaker “had no intention of listening or contributing to an important meeting on national security issues.”

Turkish troops and Turkish-backed Syrian fighters launched their offensive against Kurdish forces in northern Syria a week ago, two days after Trump suddenly announced he was withdrawing the U.S. from the area. Erdogan has said he wants to create a “safe zone” 30 kilometers (20 miles) deep in Syria.

Ankara has long argued the Kurdish fighters are nothing more than an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, which has waged a guerrilla campaign inside Turkey since the 1980s and which Turkey, as well as the U.S. and European Union, designate as a terrorist organization.

Trump mischaracterized the progress made thus far by the U.S. military in carrying out his instructions to withdraw all 1,000 troops in northeastern Syria. He referred to the approximately two dozen soldiers who evacuated from Turkey’s initial attack zone last week, but cast that as meaning the U.S. has “largely” completed its pullout.

A U.S. official familiar with planning for the withdrawal of the 1,000 said that they are consolidating onto two main bases but have not yet begun flying out of Syria in significant numbers. Military equipment is being gathered and flown out, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the withdrawal, which poses big security risks.

As U.S. troops pulled back, at least one ammunition cache was destroyed by a U.S. airstrike to prevent its usefulness, as Russian forces took possession of other former American strongholds.

Chaos Returns to Hong Kong’s Legislature as Pro-Democracy Lawmakers Disrupt Leader’s Q&A Session

Posted: 17 Oct 2019 12:25 AM PDT

Hong Kong’s new legislative season continued its disastrous start Thursday after the city’s top official was prevented from carrying out a question-and-answer session on her policies for the coming year. Several pro-democracy lawmakers were ejected from the proceedings for unruly conduct and the session, which had to be suspended twice, eventually broke up in disarray.

The chaotic scenes were a repeat of yesterday’s fiasco, when Chief Executive Carrie Lam was unable to give her annual policy address in the chamber and was instead forced to flee, under a torrent of abuse, to deliver the speech by video two hours later.

The latest curtailed meeting is only the second to be held in the chamber since it underwent a $5 million renovation after anti-government protesters ransacked it in July, and augurs poorly for Hong Kong, where a fledgling movement for full democracy is pitted against an unrepresentative, Beijing-backed government headed by Lam.

The chief executive was swamped in verbal abuse from the opening of the session. “Don’t be our chief executive—go be the leader of China,” shouted the chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party, Wu Chi-wai, as he was being dragged out of the meeting. “Leave! The earlier the better! You talk trash and you are very unwelcome here!”

Legislator Claudia Mo yelled “Carrie Lam is a liar!” before being escorted out. Several of her colleagues followed. Many wore black t-shirts that read “Five demands, not one less”—a slogan of the Hong Kong protests. Others held up placards with images of Carrie Lam with bloodied hands, conveying their anger at her refusal to hold an independent inquiry into alleged police brutality.

Lam, who was only able to take questions from three pro-government lawmakers before the meeting broke up, appealed across the divide.

“Despite the chaos going on in society, despite the dissatisfaction towards the government, we will still work hard to restore the normal operations of society,” she said. “I hope all lawmakers can let the government operate normally.”

But she also repeated her refusal to take any initiative contrary to the “One Country, Two Systems” formula by which Hong Kong is governed, whereby the enclave is promised a high degree of autonomy in exchange for acknowledging Beijing’s sovereignty. Her stance underscores the difficulty of reaching a political compromise in the former British colony, where calls for self-determination have grown during five months of unrest.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong is braced for another weekend of unrest, with a march called for Sunday to the West Kowloon rail terminus. The facility is seen as a symbol of Beijing’s presence in Hong Kong because it connects travelers to the mainland Chinese high-speed rail network and because mainland Chinese customs and immigration laws apply in parts of the complex, to the dismay of many Hongkongers.

Jimmy Sham, a leader of march organizer Civil Human Rights Front, was hospitalized in a stable condition Wednesday evening after being attacked by several men wielding hammers, local media reported. It is the second time he has been attacked in two months.

Syrian Forces Enter a Key Border Town, Thwarting Turkish Plans

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 08:49 PM PDT

CEYLANPINAR, Turkey (AP) — Syrian forces on Wednesday night rolled into the strategic border town of Kobani, blocking one path for the Turkish military to establish a “safe zone” free of Syrian Kurdish fighters along the frontier as part of its week-old offensive.

The seizure of Kobani by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad also pointed to a dramatic shift in northeastern Syria: The town was where the United States military and Kurdish fighters first united to defeat the Islamic State group four years ago and holds powerful symbolism for Syrian Kurds and their ambitions of self-rule.

The convoys of government forces drove into Kobani after dark, a resident said. The resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, was one of the few remaining amid fears of a Turkish attack on the town. Syria’s state-run media confirmed its troops entered the town.

Syria’s presence in Kobani puts a firm limit on Turkish ambitions in its offensive. The town lies between a Turkish-controlled enclave farther west and smaller areas to the east that Turkey seized in the past week.

Turkey had talked of creating a 30-kilometer (19-mile) deep “safe zone,” driving out Kurdish fighters from the border region. Turkish forces had shelled Kobani in recent days as part of the offensive but had not advanced ground troops on it.

The battle for Kobani turned the once-nondescript town into a centerpiece of the international campaign against IS, with TV cameras flocking to the Turkish side of the border to track the plumes of smoke rising from explosions in the besieged town. Then-U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry declared it would be “morally very difficult” not to help Kobani.

The IS extremists were finally driven out in early 2015 in their first major defeat, and an alliance was cemented that would eventually bring down the group’s “caliphate” in Syria.

Now the Kurdish authority agreed to allow Damascus to deploy its military in the town and other parts of northeast Syria to protect them from Turkey’s offensive launched after U.S. President Donald Trump pulled back American troops working with the Kurds.

On Wednesday, the U.S-led coalition said it had vacated a cement factory south of Kobani, which had served as a coordination center with the Kurdish-led forces. Coalition spokesman Col. Myles Caggins said that after troops left the base, two U.S. fighter jets launched pre-planned airstrikes to destroy ammunition that was left behind.

The coalition also said its forces had left Raqqa, the former capital of the Islamic State that was liberated in 2017, and Tabqa, a town to the west.

“Coalition forces continue a deliberate withdrawal from northeast Syria,” Caggins tweeted.

After being effectively abandoned by the U.S., the Kurds’ turn to the Syrian government for protection has allowed Damascus’ ally, Russia, to step in as the biggest power player.

Moscow further asserted that role Wednesday, offering to mediate a resolution to the conflict, one day before U.S. Vice President Mike Pence was to begin a mission to press Turkey for a cease-fire.

On Monday, Trump imposed limited economic sanctions on Turkey to raise the pressure on Ankara. The move came five days after Trump raised the specter of sanctions in a letter to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in which he also said that if the Turkish leader invaded Syria he would be remembered as a “devil.” Trump told Erdogan he wouldn’t want to be responsible for “slaughtering thousands of people,” and warned, “don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be a fool!”

Erdogan defied the sanctions, saying the only way its military offensive would end was if Syrian Kurdish fighters leave a designated border area.

Erdogan also said he had “no problem” accepting an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Russia soon to discuss Syria. But he threw into doubt a planned Nov. 13 meeting with Trump, citing anger over the sanctions that Washington imposed Monday on the NATO ally.

Despite an outcry among both Democratic and Republican lawmakers over the pullout and the Turkish invasion, Trump insisted a fight between Turkey and the Kurds was not a U.S. problem and that things are “very nicely under control” in northern Syria.

“Syria’s friendly with the Kurds. The Kurds are very well-protected. Plus, they know how to fight. And, by the way, they’re no angels,” Trump told reporters at the White House while meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Trump added that U.S. troops are “largely out” of the region, adding that if Russia wanted to get involved with Syria, “that’s really up to them. It’s not our border. We shouldn’t be losing lives over it.”

Still, the repercussions from America’s abrupt withdrawal were expanding. Assad’s forces are returning to regions of northern Syria they abandoned at the height of the 8-year-old civil war. Moscow has taken a more prominent role as an interlocutor among Assad, the former U.S.-allied Kurds and Turkey.

Erdogan’s office confirmed the Turkish leader would meet Thursday with Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and said he would travel to Sochi, Russia, for talks on Tuesday.

Erdogan said he was not concerned by the U.S. sanctions. He told reporters that chances for his November trip to Washington are “something to be assessed” after the talks with the American delegation, he said, adding that the sanctions and criticisms in the U.S. constituted “great disrespect toward the Turkish Republic.”

In an address to his ruling party legislators, Erdogan said Turkey would not be coerced into halting its offensive or accepting offers for mediation with the Kurdish fighters, which Turkey considers to be terrorists.

“Our proposal is for the terrorists to lay down their arms, leave their equipment, destroy the traps they have created, and leave the safe zone we designated, as of tonight,” Erdogan said. “If this is done, our Operation Peace Spring will end by itself.”

In a speech to Parliament, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey won’t be affected by “sanctions and threats.” He also said Turkey would “give the appropriate answer to these sanctions.”

Turkish forces and Kurdish fighters also battled over the border town of Ras al-Ayn. Turkey said it had captured the town days ago, but its hold appeared uncertain.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in remarks carried by Russian news agencies that Moscow is committed to mediating between Syria and Turkey.

Russia already has announced it had deployed troops outside the flashpoint town of Manbij to keep apart the Syrian military and Turkish-led forces. Syrian forces took control of Manbij as U.S. troops completed their pullout from the town Tuesday.

Lavrov also said Moscow will also continue to encourage Syria’s Kurds and government to seek rapprochement following the U.S. withdrawal. The Kurds are hoping to reach a deal with Damascus that preserves at least some degree of the autonomy they seized for themselves during the civil war.

Lavrov also blamed the U.S. and the West for undermining the Syrian state, saying this pushed “the Kurds toward separatism and confrontation with Arab tribes.”

In another sign of Moscow’s rising profile, France suggested it will also work more closely with Russia in Syria.

French Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian said told French TV channel BFM that France is now looking to Russia, given their “common interests” in defeating the Islamic State group in Syria.

A U.N. Security Council meeting concluded with no call for Turkey to end its military offensive against the Kurds. Instead, the diplomats issued a brief statement expressing concern about the dispersal of “terrorists” from the region and the humanitarian impact.

Police and Protesters Clash in Catalonia for a Third Consecutive Night

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 06:41 PM PDT

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Rioting raged in Barcelona and several other Catalan towns for a third straight night Wednesday, with police fighting running street battles with protesters angered by lengthy prison sentences for nine leaders of the wealthy region’s drive for independence from Spain.

Tens of thousands of protesters faced off against police in Barcelona. Some set up flaming barricades in the streets, torching cars and trash cans. They chanted, “The streets will always be ours!”

Catalan police said protesters threw gasoline bombs, stones, bottles and firecrackers at them.

Violence erupted in Catalonia after Spain’s Supreme Court on Monday sentenced nine separatist Catalan leaders to up to 13 years in prison for their part in an October 2017 effort to declare independence for the region.

After a surge in separatist sentiment since the global economic crisis that hit Spain particularly hard, around half of Catalonia’s 7.5 million residents want to break away from Spain and forge a new European country. The divisive issue has divided families and friends, but demonstrations had largely been peaceful until this week.

Outnumbered police used riot helmets, vests and shields for protection. They fired foam bullets and swung batons to keep away the swarming radicals, most of who covered their faces. Police also drove armored vans at high speeds to scatter the crowds.

When police succeeded in dispersing one hot spot, another erupted.

One police helicopter was hit by five “pyrotechnic” objects similar to fireworks, according to the regional police force. The rare passers-by or tourists caught in the middle of the melees scurried to safety. Some residents tossed water from balconies down on burning trash bins and debris while firefighters tried to keep up with the emergencies.

Central Barcelona, a leading tourist destination known for its beautiful architecture and relaxed atmosphere, became a no-go territory.

“(This is) shameful. It doesn’t represent me,” architect Gerard Beltri said. “I think the verdict was very bad, but I think this (violence) is by a minority of the independence movement. The real independence movement is not like this. These people only want to do damage and that’s it.”

Health services in Catalonia said medics attended to 52 people in the region Wednesday. Police said late Wednesday that they had arrested “at least 20 people” throughout Catalonia for violent acts.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the violent clashes wouldn’t provoke him into taking drastic measures in Catalonia, despite calls by rival parties to crack down on the separatist politicians in power in the region.

Sánchez, who is an interim prime minister while awaiting national elections Nov. 10, consulted with other national political leaders in Madrid during the day about the trouble in Catalonia.

The Spanish government will respond with “firmness, calmness and unity” to the confrontations, Sánchez said in a televised address.

Sánchez blamed “organized groups of extremists” for the rioting but said he wouldn’t be drawn into playing their game of an “ascending spiral of violence.”

The protests followed the pattern of previous days as crowds gathered during the day to block roads and hold marches demanding independence. After sunset, marches turned ugly.

Police also reported clashes in Girona, a town near the French border, and other places.

The clashes have injured more than 250 people, including police, over the past three days. On Monday police skirmished for hours to keep protesters from entering the Barcelona airport and shutting it down.

An organization representing Barcelona businesses, called Barcelona Abierta, said the violence had caused “significant losses” and “deeply damaged” its image abroad. Tourism is vital to the city’s economy.

Pere Ferrer, director of Catalonia’s regional police, said the street violence was “intolerable.”

Other protests are scheduled in the coming days as separatists vow no letup in their secession drive.

Most impromptu protesters have responded to an online campaign by Tsunami Democratic, a shadowy grassroots group that uses encrypted messaging apps to call for peaceful disobedience.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told Cadena SER radio that authorities were investigating the group and “close to” discovering who is behind it.

On Wednesday, the group issued a statement appealing for an end to the violence.

During a daytime lull in the rioting, thousands of people set off Wednesday on five large peaceful protest marches across Catalonia that aim to converge in Barcelona on Friday.

They included families with children, elderly and young people, and banners reading “Libertat Presos Politics” (Freedom for political prisoners) — a reference to the 12 leaders sentenced by the Supreme Court.

Catalan regional president Quim Torra, a fervent separatist who critics have called a xenophobe, joined one of the marches, saying he wanted to be next to the people.

After three days of ignoring calls to criticize the street violence in the region he governs, Torra bent to the pressure late Wednesday and called for the unrest to stop.

“I make a call for calm and serenity. We separatists have not been and are not violent,” he said in a brief and hurriedly organized televised statement. “This must stop right now.”

Litany of Defeat: Trump Defends Rising Costs of “Strategically Brilliant” Mideast Retreat

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 06:12 PM PDT

Declaring his abrupt decision to withdraw U.S. troops in northern Syria “strategically brilliant,” President Donald Trump Wednesday scrambled to contain the damage from what outraged Republicans and Democrats said was an expanding litany of losses for American national security interests in the region.

Trump welcomed Russia’s rapid takeover of American positions in the region. He said that the Kurds, long Washington’s ally against ISIS, were “no angels” and that some were in fact worse terrorists than ISIS itself. And he described mounting violence that has killed scores of civilians and has included multiple reports of war crimes, as a fight over sand that didn’t concern the U.S.

It was a dizzying series of statements by the President that contradicted policies touted by Trump’s own administration as recently as two weeks ago. The result, said worried foreign policy experts, was not just a short term danger of a resurgent ISIS and the human cost as foreign forces swept through the power vacuum left by the U.S. withdrawal, but a larger shift in power in the region. “The world sees a U.S. President with no plan or understanding of the lasting and severe consequences of both his actions and inactions,” said Chuck Hagel, a former U.S. Defense Secretary and Republican Senator from Nebraska.

Trump’s sharp break with his own recent policies reflected how rapidly and unfavorably events in Northern Syria have unfolded in the wake of his Oct. 6 phone call with Turkey’s leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Trump said it was “a good thing” that Russian forces had begun supporting the Kurds. On Tuesday, Russians were already sleeping in bunks at bases that American troops had spent years building and provisioning only to abandon them in haste just hours earlier. Trump’s former counter-ISIS envoy Brett McGurk wrote on Twitter that U.S. forces were “executing [an] emergency ‘break glass’ evacuation procedure reserved for an extreme worst-case scenario.” The result, says Hagel is a big win for Russian president Vladimir Putin. “Russia comes out the big winner in the Middle East,” Hagel said. “Putin now is the go-to guy in the Middle East. Assad will do what Putin wants.”

Trump likewise downplayed his abandonment of the Kurds, who had fought ISIS alongside U.S. troops since 2015. Following the U.S. retreat, the Kurds switched military allegiances for their own survival, aligning themselves this week with Syria’s President Bashar Assad and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. “The Kurds are very well protected,” Trump said, “Plus, they know how to fight. And, by the way, they’re no angels.”

Republican Senators like Lindsey Graham were particularly vocal in criticizing Trump’s abandonment of the Kurds in the fight against ISIS. “I worry we will not have allies in the future against radical Islam, ISIS will reemerge, & Iran’s rise in Syria will become a nightmare for Israel,” Graham tweeted, “I fear this is a complete and utter national security disaster in the making.” Although ISIS is no longer in control of any major city in Iraq or Syria, the fighting is not over. The U.S. had been relying on the Kurds to destroy remaining underground ISIS cells and to guard more than 30 detention facilities that hold about 11,000 ISIS detainees spread across northern Syria.

Trump also dismissed reports of mounting violence, which the U.N. said has displaced 130,000 people and killed scores of others. “It’s a problem we have very nicely under control,” Trump told reporters. “It’s not our problem,” Trump said. “They’ve got a lot of sand over there… There’s a lot of sand they can play with.”

Regardless of how Trump describes the developments, he and his aides spent much of Wednesday scrambling to contain the damage.

Trump sent Erdogan a remarkably undiplomatic letter, first reported by Fox Business, cajoling and threatening the Turkish president. Trump wrote, “History will look upon you favorably if you get this done the right and humane way. It will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don’t happen. Don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be a fool! I will call you later.”

Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are scheduled to travel to Ankara in search of a ceasefire in coming days. But Erdogan has already publicly dismissed the idea. By unleashing chaos and then declaring the U.S. will play no role in containing it, says Anthony Cordesman, a former Pentagon intelligence official now at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Trump has left Erdogan “little to gain from backing down from an operation that is extremely popular in Turkey.” If Erdogan halts now, Cordesman says, there “is no clear prospect of the U.S. doing anything to actually bring stability back to the Kurdish parts of Syria.”

On Capitol Hill, Republicans and Democrats joined in a desperate effort to constrain Turkey. The House delivered a rare bipartisan condemnation of the decision to abandon the Kurds with a 354-60 vote. The measure, which is largely symbolic, calls on Turkey to immediately end the military assault in northern Syria. “At President Trump’s hands, American leadership has been laid low,” said Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, who introduced the measure and serves as Foreign Affairs Committee chairman.

Trump held a contentious meeting with leaders from both parties in Congress at the White House, during which he argued he was ensuring American security through the withdrawal. Trump told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that fewer that 100 ISIS fighters had escaped, and claimed they were the least dangerous of those who had been detained, according to a Democratic source familiar with the meeting.

Schumer asked Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, who was present at the meeting, whether the escapees were in fact not dangerous, and Esper said he could not confirm that, according to the Democratic source. When Trump said his plan was to keep Americans safe, Pelosi retorted that wasn’t a plan, it was a goal, according to a senior Democratic aide familiar with the meeting. Trump later called Pelosi a “third-grade politician” according to the source, at which point Pelosi and other Democrats left.

Erdogan has dismissed the United States’ calls for a ceasefire and instead advanced deeper into Syria. Turkey, a NATO member, has long wanted to launch a military offensive against the Kurdish militias in Syria because they consider them terrorists. The U.S. had for months promised the Kurds ongoing U.S. support, but Trump backed down when Erdogan threatened invasion during the Oct. 6 call.

As for Trump, he dismissed the fallout of his decision to withdraw the troops. “We’re 7,000 miles away,” Trump said Wednesday, “I campaigned on bringing our soldiers back home, and that’s what I’m doing.” To the regional powers scrambling to take advantage of the hasty American retreat, he added: “I wish them all a lot of luck.”

On Wednesday, after U.S. forces left a military base they had established at a cement facility in Northern Syria, two F-15 fighter jets hit the base with an airstrike to obliterate an ammunition cache and to “reduce the facility’s military usefulness.”

‘Don’t Be a Tough Guy. Don’t Be a Fool!’ President Trump Wrote to Erdogan About Turkey’s Advance Into Syria

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 03:35 PM PDT

President Donald Trump wrote a letter to Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan calling on him to “work out a good deal!” and warning him not to be a “tough guy” or “fool.”

“History will look upon you favorably if you get this done the right and humane way,” according to the Oct. 9 letter, reported earlier by Fox Business Network and confirmed by the White House. “It will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don’t happen.”

Trump has been trying to contain the damage from his sudden move last week to pull American forces from northern Syria, allowing Turkey to proceed with a military operation in the region. The withdrawal left Kurdish fighters who fought for several years alongside American troops against Islamic State exposed to attack from the Turkish military.

Trump on Wednesday stood by his decision, rejecting criticism from key GOP supporters in Congress that he abandoned Kurdish allies and allowed Russia to fill the void.

Trump’s letter told the Turkish leader: “I have worked hard to solve some of your problems.” He didn’t elaborate.

Trump also referred to the case of Andrew Brunson, an evangelical pastor who had been held captive in Turkey on terrorism charges.

Trump told Erdogan in the letter: “You don’t want to be responsible for slaughtering thousands of people, and I don’t want to be responsible for destroying the Turkish economy — and I will. I’ve already given you a little glimpse with respect to Pastor Brunson.”

Brunson was freed from prison in Turkey in 2018 after Trump doubled metal tariffs on Turkey, fueling a weakening of the lira, and imposed financial sanctions on key Erdogan aides involved in the pastor’s case. Brunson had been accused of collaborating with terrorist groups and participating in a 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, charges he strongly denied.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump insisted the letter was proof that he hadn’t provided Erodgan a “green light” for his incursion into Syria.

“I wrote a letter right after that conversation — a very powerful letter,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “There was never given a green light. They’ve been wanting to do that for years and, frankly, they’ve been fighting for many, many years.”

Republican allies sought to spin the letter as evidence that the administration had warned Turkey against misbehavior. House Foreign Affairs Committee leader Michael McCaul described the missive as “very stern” and said it proved Turkey had acted despite warnings from the White House.

This September Hit the Record for the Hottest Ever — and 2019 Is Shaping Up to Be the Second Hottest Year

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 02:27 PM PDT

(WASHINGTON) — Scientists say the globe sizzled to a record tying hot month in September, driven partly by a sweaty United States.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says 2019 tied with 2015 for the hottest September on record globally. September averaged 60.71 degrees (15.95 Celsius), 1.71 degrees (0.95 Celsius) higher than the 20th century average.

Temperatures on land were the hottest on record for September, with records going back to 1880.

NOAA calculates that Earth is on pace for the second hottest year on record, behind 2016.

NOAA climate monitoring chief Deke Arndt says all but the western third of the United States was record or near-record hot in the month.

Arndt says this is warming that’s been going on for decades from heat-trapping gases from the burning of fossil fuels.

Pakistani and Indian Troops Exchange Gunfire in Kashmir, Killing 4 Civilians

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 11:41 AM PDT

(ISLAMABAD) — Pakistani and Indian troops exchanged gunfire in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, killing four civilians and wounding nearly a dozen others, officials from both sides said Wednesday, as tensions remain high between the two South Asian countries.

Kashmir is split between Pakistan and India and claimed by both countries in its entirety. They have fought two wars over the province.

India sparked a new round of tensions in August, when it downgraded the autonomy of its side of Kashmir and imposed tighter controls on the area.

On Wednesday, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said it summoned an Indian diplomat to lodge its protest over the previous day’s “cease fire violations” that killed three civilians, including two children, on the Pakistani side of the contested Kashmir border.

In neighboring India, Lt. Col. Devender Anand, an army spokesman, said Pakistan fired at two dozen Indian army posts along the highly militarized Poonch sector Monday and Tuesday. He said Pakistani troops used mortar and machine-guns and targeted several villages as well.

Anand blamed Pakistan for initiating the fire and said Indian troops “befittingly” responded to what he called a series of unprovoked cease-fire violations. Earlier, an Indian civil administrator, Rahul Yadav, said that a young woman and several cattle were killed because of Pakistani firing in the Poonch sector Tuesday.

Also Wednesday, Indian police officer Parvaiz Ahmed said Indian security forces killed three militants in an exchange of gunfire in southern Kashmir after receiving intelligence that a group of militants was hiding in the town Bijbehara town.

Police also said gunmen fatally shot one brick kiln worker and one apple trader from the Indian states of Chhattisgarh and Punjab states on Wednesday in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Another trader from Punjab state was critically wounded after gunmen sprayed bullets in the southern Shopian area, a police officer said.

The police officer blamed militants fighting against Indian rule for the killings. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with reporters.

Kashmir’s largest indigenous rebel group, Hizbul Mujahideen, had warned that it would target Indians visiting Kashmir if New Delhi revoked Kashmir’s special status.

Indian-administered Kashmir has experienced unrest and sporadic anti-government protests since New Delhi revoked its special status in August.

During White House Meeting, Trump Surprised Family of Dead U.K. Teen by Offering to Introduce Them to Woman Suspected of Killing Him

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 11:32 AM PDT

President Donald Trump surprised the family of a British teen killed in a road accident by offering to introduce them to the diplomat’s wife who is allegedly responsible for his death.

Harry Dunn’s mother, Charlotte Charles, told Sky News that the “bombshell” offer was dropped on them during their 15-minute meeting with Trump at the White House on Tuesday.

The parents told the U.K. news outlet that they were surprised when Trump told them Anne Sacoolas, the woman suspected of hitting their son in the fatal road accident in the U.K. in August, was also at the White House, and willing to meet. Sacoolas, the wife of a U.S. diplomat, left the U.K. after the fatal crash and the State Department has blocked British investigators by claiming diplomatic immunity.

With the help of the Dunn family’s activism, the incident has made international headlines. For weeks they have been pleading with British and American officials to bring Sacoolas back to the U.K. to face justice.

“The bombshell was dropped not soon after we walked in the room that Sacoolas was in the building and was willing to meet with us,” Charles said. “We made it very clear, as we’ve said all along, we will meet with her and we are still willing to see her… but it has to be on our terms and on U.K. soil.”

Although they were surprised by the circumstances surrounding the meeting, the Dunn family said that they were pleased with how Trump otherwise handled the meeting.

Charles called Trump “gracious,” and said that when the family asked him to put himself in their shoes and consider what he would do if was his son, Trump told them he would “push to look at this from a different angle.”

But Tim Dunn, Harry’s father, told Sky News in the same interview that Trump did not suggest returning Sacoolas to the U.K. and that the surprise meeting was not what the family had in mind. “We said from the start that’s not what we wanted,” Dunn said. “We weren’t ready to meet her and we felt a bit rushed.”

On Wednesday, Trump told reporters that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had urged him to meet with the Dunn family, and confirmed he set up the surprise meeting believing that the Dunn family would want to meet Sacoolas.

“I offered to bring the person in question in and they weren’t ready for it,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Trump added that car accidents in the U.K. caused by drivers driving on the wrong side of the road were common. “That happens to a lot of people by the way,” he said.

According to 2016 data from the World Health Organization, the road traffic death rate in the U.S. is four times higher than in the U.K.

Mark Stephens, the Dunn family attorney, told Sky News in a video interview that the reason Dunn’s family went to the White House was to make a “heartfelt plea to the President for justice.” Instead, Stephens said Trump surprised the family with Sacoolas and his plan to present them as a “happy family,” to waiting reporters.

“Unfortunately, that was a gargantuan miscalculation and it’s just one in a series of gargantuan miscalculations,” he told Sky News. “Spiriting her [Sacoolas] away from the U.K., making her a fugitive from justice and bringing her that way was just so wrong.”

Northamptonshire Police confirmed that a 42-year-old American woman — who has been identified by U.K. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab as Sacoolas — is the suspect in a car crash that killed 19-year-old Dunn on Aug. 27. According to police, Sacoolas left the country even after telling authorities she had no plans to do so.

Sacoolas’ relationship to her husband, a U.S. diplomat, gives her diplomatic immunity, allowing her to avoid arrest for almost any crime unless the U.S. decides to revoke it. The State Department told TIME in a statement that immunity was “rarely waived.”

How to Get Around Bali

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 05:00 PM PDT

If you're planning to visit Bali, your best bet is to hire a professional driver and car to take you around the beautiful Indonesian island. You can also hop in a taxi or shuttle bus to make your way between destinations, or ride a bemo or ojek like a local. While renting a car or motorcycle can seem like an exciting way to embrace your adventurous spirit, be mindful of the unpredictable nature of local traffic before getting the keys to a local vehicle. Publicly and privately operated ferries and boat tours will enable you to visit the surrounding islands.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Reserving a Car

  1. Hire a professional driver and car for safety and convenience. This is by far the most straightforward and secure way to get around Bali. Your hotel may have a car service, or you can seek out a commercial car company to book a driver for a day or a week. The cost of the car, insurance, and gasoline will typically be included in the daily rate, and you'll also be responsible for covering the driver's accommodations and food. Expect to pay between Rp 350,000 and Rp 450,000 per day in total, but know that the rate may be negotiable with the driver.[1]
    Get Around Bali Step 1.jpg
    • If your itinerary calls for an overnight stay, the driver will typically find their own lodging and meals. You'll be responsible for paying, but this shouldn't result in a large additional cost. Discuss the plan and agree on a per diem rate in advance.
    • Having access to a professional driver's advice can be very useful. For instance, they can point you in the right direction once you're on foot. They might also be able to translate local terms or explain unfamiliar customs.
  2. Hail a metered taxi for day trips or cross-town transportation. You can call ahead to book taxi services, or hail an empty cab when you need a ride. The meter will start at Rp 5,000 for the initial of your trip. After this point it will increase to Rp 5,000 per that follows. You can also discuss booking a taxi for the day. Agree on the rate and specific services with the driver ahead of time. For instance, you might want to do a day trip or drive you around the city to see the local sights.[2]
    Get Around Bali Step 2.jpg
    • Bali cab companies include Blue Bird Taxi, Golden Bird Bali, Komotra Taxi, Ngurah Rai Taxi, and Wahana Taxi.
  3. Request a car through the Grab ridesharing app. Load up your smartphone with a local SIM card for data access and download the Grab app. Select your current location and desired destination to request a ride. You may add your payment information to the app, but there are also options to pay by cash or card as you would in a taxi.[3]
    Get Around Bali Step 3.jpg
    • Note that ridesharing apps have been met with resistance in Bali and pickups are permitted in certain areas. For instance, your hotel may not allow Grab pickups and drop-offs on their premises. Pick a spot down the street instead to avoid a confrontation.
    • Uber had a short-lived existence in Bali. However, they sold their market share to Grab and no longer operate on the island.[4]
  4. Reserve a rental car if you want to drive yourself around. Legally, you're required to own an international driver's license or a local permit to drive in Bali. You can find international rental car companies including Avis, Budget, and Hertz at the Ngurah Rai International Airport as well as popular resort cities.[5] Daily rates may range from $20 to $50 USD or more. Make sure insurance is included when you book your car.
    Get Around Bali Step 4.jpg
    • You can get a tourist's driving permit issued at the Foreign License Service in Denpasar for Rp 150,000. You'll need to show your passport and a driver's license from your country of residence.[6]
    • Be aware that driving in Bali can be challenging and risky for visitors. If you do decide to drive a rental car, be prepared to make sudden stops and stay attentive.

[Edit]Riding Bicycles and Motorcycles

  1. Ride pedal bicycle to get some exercise while you travel. Bike rentals start around Rp 30,000 per day. A bicycle, or sepeda, provides independence as well as an on-the-go workout. Ask your hotel about the nearest bike rental company, and make sure the bike you choose is in good condition. Obtain a well-fitting helmet and test the bike's steering, brakes, tire pressure, and gears before you set out on your journey.[7]
    Get Around Bali Step 5.jpg
    • Although traffic in Bali can be difficult for an inexperienced visitor to navigate, a pedal bike is a safer alternative to rental cars and motorcycles.
  2. Rent a motorcycle or scooter to ride around Bali. You can rent out a scooter or motorcycle from a number of local vendors. Daily rates cost around Rp 50,000. Ensure that the vehicle is in working order, with good brakes, tires, and lights, and that you have the correct insurance and license documentation. You will also be provided with a helmet which should fit snugly.[8]
    Get Around Bali Step 6.jpg
    • A safety helmet is a must-have and should fit correctly. If the rental company doesn't have any that fit you, purchase one that does from another vendor before riding the bike.
  3. Hail an ojek and get around on the back of a motorcycle taxi. Operating in a slightly more informal system, ojeks are motorcycles that accept paying passengers. If you give the impression that you're looking for a ride when standing on the side of the road, you may receive offers from ojek drivers. Or, you can download the Go-Jek mobile app to request a ride.[9] You'll negotiate a fair with the driver, but expect to pay around Rp 30,000 for a trip.
    Get Around Bali Step 7.jpg
    • Ojeks can be particularly useful for scooting around country roadways.

[Edit]Taking a Bus or Boat

  1. Book a shuttle bus or private tour via Perama Tour and Travel. Perama operates shuttle bus services throughout Bali's major towns, as well as regional tours, airport transfers, and daily destination tours.[10] Perama buses are comfortable and safe. Rates are affordable although the trips tend to be slow.[11]
    Get Around Bali Step 8.jpg
    • Note that the buses don't stop along the way for small villages or detours to local sights.
    • You can explore the options online and plan your trip in advance.
  2. Ride a public Kura-Kura shuttle bus and travel in comfort. Kura-Kura operates 5 lines around Bali. Its fleet of buses painted like green and yellow turtles allows for easy travel across the major tourist sites. The buses are comfortably equipped with air conditioning and free wi-fi. Luggage racks and straightforward AV announcement systems onboard are especially useful for travelers. Single trip fares can range from Rp 20,000 to Rp 80,000.[12]
    Get Around Bali Step 9.jpg
    • Look at the route schedule ahead of time to plan your trip. Although departure intervals are regular, some routes depart once every couple of hours.
  3. Hop on a public bemo to travel like a local. Once the most popular form of public transit, bemos are open-air mini buses or vans that hold a dozen passengers on bench seats. However, the system isn't too tourist-friendly and the vehicles can be very cramped.[13] But if you want to travel like a local, raise your hand to hail the bemo and feel free to hop off at any point.
    Get Around Bali Step 10.jpg
    • Fares can run upwards of Rp 4,000, although obvious tourists are often charged more.[14]
    • Passengers are charged more for luggage.
  4. Take a commercial tour boat to travel the region by water. Companies including Perama Tour and Travel and Blue Water Express operate boat tours to popular spots on neighboring islands. These routes can be quick and direct and offer scenic views of Bali.[15]
    Get Around Bali Step 11.jpg
    • Note that safety regulations and training are lacking across public and private boat operators. Assess the boat for safety equipment and exits. If something seems unsafe, get back on land and seek out another option.
  5. Hop on a public ferry to visit neighboring islands. Public ferries offer similar services to commercial boat tours, but at cheaper rates. Note that these may not necessarily be safer or than commercial options.
    Get Around Bali Step 12.jpg
    • Waters can be turbulent and uncomfortable in small vessels. Opt for a boat with no less than 30 seats, rather than a small speedboat.[16]

How to Sit During Zen Meditation

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Zen meditation (or Zazen) is a great way to reduce stress, focus on the present moment, and connect more deeply with yourself and the world around you. The traditional position for Zen meditation involves sitting on a circular cushion (zafu) with your legs crossed in the Lotus position, your spine upright, your hands on your thighs, and your eyes pointed slightly downward. Depending on your needs and circumstances, though, you can use a chair, bench, or rolled cushion for Zen meditation, but do your best to keep your spine, head, and hands in the recommended position.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Sitting on a Cushion, Chair, or Bench

  1. Sit on a circular cushion (zafu) for the classic Zen position. Many traditionalists prefer to use a circular meditation cushion called a zafu. If you prefer, though, you can use any type of soft but supportive cushion that helps you stay in the upright seated posture used for traditional Zen meditation.[1]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • For extra comfort, place a meditation mat, or even a blanket or towel, on the floor underneath the cushion.
    • Sit in the center of the cushion if you prefer keeping your knees on it. Especially if you're new to Zen meditation, you may find it easier to sit with your crossed legs resting on the cushion along with your backside.
    • Sit at the front of the cushion if you want to rest your knees on the floor. This is a more traditional approach—your backside on the zafu and your crossed legs draped over the front.[2]
  2. Cross your legs in a comfortable position when using a zafu. The lotus position is the most traditional way to cross your legs during Zen meditation, but it may not be comfortable for newcomers or those with physical limitations. Fortunately, there are several positions you can use. Popular choices include:[3]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Lotus: Cross your left leg over your right so that the tops of both of your feet are resting on the upper thigh of the opposite leg.
    • Half Lotus: Cross your left leg over your right and rest your left foot on your right upper thigh, but tuck your right foot beneath your left leg. You can reverse legs if desired.
    • Quarter Lotus: Cross your legs loosely so that your left knee is resting on (or just slightly above, depending on your flexibility) the side of your right foot, and vice versa.[4]
    • Burmese: Instead of crossing one leg over the other, spread your legs a bit wider, rest your knees, lower legs, and feet on the mat (or floor), and touch the heel of one foot to the base of the ankle of the other foot.
  3. Choose a level, sturdy chair if you're unable to sit on the floor. Don't choose a soft, cushiony chair that you can sink down into, but rather one that enables you to sit flat-footed and fully upright. A wooden dining chair or even a folding metal chair may work—just make sure you can sit to the front of the chair and reach your feet flat to the ground.[5]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Sit far enough forward that, when sitting fully upright, no part of your body can contact the back of the chair.
    • You could use a chair-height stool if desired, because you shouldn't be in contact with the back of the chair anyway.
  4. Put your feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart, when using a chair. Your lower legs, from your feet to your knees, should create 2 parallel vertical columns that are perpendicular to the floor. Your knees should bend at 90-degree angles, so that your upper legs are parallel to the floor. Your knees and feet should be at the same width apart as your hips, and your toes should be pointed straight forward.[6]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Find a higher or lower chair if necessary so you can achieve this position.
    • Add a lumbar support behind your lower back if necessary. You may not be able to sit fully upright on the front section of the chair without experiencing lower back discomfort. In this case, wedge a rounded lumbar pillow between your lower back and the base of the chair back.
  5. Use a rolled-up cushion as an alternative to a floor cushion or chair. Roll up your meditation cushion into a log shape. Your goal is to create a tubular cushion from your zafu that you can straddle with your legs, knees on the floor and backside resting on the cushion. If your zafu isn't big enough on its own, use additional cushions, mats, and/or blankets to build up the height needed to support this position.[7]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Lay one or multiple mats on the floor. Your knees will be supporting a fair amount of your body weight, so it's helpful to give them some cushioning. Place at least one meditation mat or soft blanket on the floor, and use more than one if needed to provide additional cushioning.[8]
    • The rolled cushion needs to be sturdy enough so that you can keep your upper body straight, rather than slouching down into the cushion.
  6. Straddle the rolled cushion with your lower legs flat on the mat. Imagine that you are sitting on a bicycle or a horse. Your lower legs and knees should be flat on the floor and against the sides of the cushion, your upper legs should be at roughly 45-degree angles, and your upper body should be perpendicular to the ground.[9]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Your shoulders, hips, and the middle of your shins should all be in a vertical line.
  7. Straddle a meditation bench instead of a rolled cushion, if desired. Meditation benches typically have 2 legs and a forward-slanted seat. Straddle the seat in the same way you would a rolled-up cushion, with your upper body upright and your lower legs flat on the floor.[10]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Some meditation benches are wide enough that you can tuck your lower legs between the bench legs, rather than straddling them to the outside.

[Edit]Positioning Your Spine, Head, and Hands

  1. Extend your spine straight upward, centering on your lower abdomen. Push your lower spine slightly forward and extend your chest slightly out and up. In this position, you should feel as though the top of your head is extending as high as it can and that your belly is your center of gravity.[11]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Your spine doesn't need to be literally vertical, as this would likely be too uncomfortable to maintain. Rather, focus on stretching your upper body straight upward as much as you can without moderate or greater discomfort.
  2. Tuck your chin and direct your gaze on the floor about ahead. Angle your chin very slightly in and down, so that the crown of your head, rather than the top of your head, is your highest point. Angle your eyes a bit further downward so that you're looking at the floor in front of you.[12]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • Close your eyes halfway, as if you have "sleepy eyes." Look at the floor without fully focusing on it.
    • Don't close your eyes all the way, or you'll likely daydream or possibly doze off.
  3. Align your lips and teeth and touch your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Your top and bottom lips, as well as your upper and lower rows of teeth, should be aligned and in light contact with each other. Don't clench your teeth or lips. Lightly press the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, just behind your upper front teeth.[13]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • Breathe deeply through your nose while keeping your mouth closed.
  4. Rest your wrists on your thighs, overlap your fingers, and touch thumbs. No matter your sitting position—cushion, chair, bench, etc.—lay your wrists on top of your upper thighs. Open your hands with your palms up, and lay the fingers on your left hand on top of those on your right hand. Touch the tips of your thumbs together.[14]
Sit During Zen Meditation Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • The outer sides of both pinkies should be touching, but not pressing against, your abdomen.
    • Now that your body is positioned, you can begin your zen meditation period.

[Edit]Tips

  • To begin with, sitting for about 5 to 10 minutes is fine. Later, you may want to extend this to around 30 minutes—many regular groups will do multiple sessions of about this length, perhaps interspersed with walking meditation.
  • Sitting with a group can be a great help, so find a zen group near you. Beginners are usually warmly welcomed.
  • Look online for meditation cushions. In a pinch, though, a rolled up blanket, large pillow, or even a couch cushion may work for the job.
  • It's critical to the traditional Zen meditation posture that you keep your back straight and extended upward. However, don't be afraid to make adjustments as necessary so that you can reap the benefits of Zen meditation.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Rarely, meditation can 'open' one to previously repressed thoughts or desires. If you get distressed, consider finding a Zen teacher or seeking psychological help.
  • While sometimes zazen can be physically uncomfortable, it should not be painful or risk injury.

[Edit]Things You'll Need

How to Plan a Destination Wedding

Posted: 16 Oct 2019 01:00 AM PDT

If you're dreaming of tying the knot in a faraway place, you may be concerned about the logistics of making that dream a reality. However, destination weddings are becoming more and more popular and easier to plan. In fact, more than 20 percent of couples now opt for a getaway wedding.[1] With the right planning, you can tie the knot in the destination of your dreams!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Choosing a Location

  1. Pick a place that's meaningful or exciting to you and your partner. You may decide to say your vows in the place you got engaged, where you took your first vacation together, or in a parent or grandparent's home country. Whatever destination you choose, you'll want to make sure it's somewhere both you and your partner want to make memories.[2]
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Even if you don't choose somewhere with sentimental value, it's still important to pick a location that appeals to you and that you think your guests would enjoy visiting.
  2. Research your destination's climate and weather patterns. Your destination's weather can have a big impact on your wedding. For example, if you know you want an outdoor wedding, you'll want to avoid places with unpredictable weather patterns.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Once you've researched your destination's weather, you may have a better idea of what time of year would make most sense to schedule your nuptials.[3]
  3. Estimate travel costs for you and your guests. When choosing a destination for your wedding, it's important to get a sense for how much you can expect to spend on airfare and accommodations and how much you're asking your guests to spend. While you're not expected to help cover your guests' travel expenses, you may choose to discreetly help certain people buy their plane tickets and/or hotel rooms if you know they can't afford them on their own.[4]
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • If you're flying halfway around the world, chances are your plane tickets will be expensive, and it's important to take this into consideration when you choose your location.[5]
    • Keep in mind that your guests may also have to take additional time off work to travel to your destination if they end up having to take multiple flights over many hours.
  4. Visit your destination ahead of time if possible. If your budget allows, it's a good idea to travel to your location beforehand to make sure it's really the place want to say your vows. This will also allow you to tour potential venues, meet with a local wedding planner, and establish a vision for your big day.[6] If you're planning on hiring local vendors, this is also a good time to meet with potential caterers, photographers/videographers, hair and makeup professionals, and any other people who will contribute to your big day.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Make sure to manage your costs by doing as much research as possible before your trip and scheduling appointments well in advance to avoid having to take multiple trips. You don't want to end up spending your wedding budget on traveling back and forth before your wedding.
  5. Reserve your venue at least a year in advance. Your venue is one of the most important things you'll need to think about when planning your destination wedding. You may be envisioning an intimate ceremony on the beach, an elegant cathedral wedding, or a cozy celebration at a mountaintop lodge. Whatever your vision for your big day, your venue will serve as the backdrop, so it's important to choose it early in the process.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Wedding venues book quickly, and you want to make sure you don't miss out on your dream venue because you waited to long.[7]
    • If you're planning an outdoor wedding, you may want to choose a venue that has an indoor space available as a backup, in case of bad weather.[8]

[Edit]Inviting Your Guests

  1. Send out wedding invitations at least 8 months in advance. Your guests will need to book flights and hotel rooms and may need to ask for time off work to attend your wedding. That's why it's important to give them plenty of advance notice.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • If possible, try to send out "save the date" cards even earlier (preferably 10-12 months before your wedding date) so your guests can plan ahead.[9]
    • Keep in mind that not everyone will be able to attend. This is true for any wedding, but especially when you're asking your guests to travel.
  2. Organize group accommodation for your guests. This will save them time, money, and the trouble of having to find and book a hotel on their own. Many hotels offer discounted rates for groups, and reserving a block of rooms ahead of time will ensure all of your guests have a comfortable place to stay once they arrive.[10]
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • In many cases, if you're getting married at a resort or lodge, group rates will be included in a wedding package.
  3. Create a wedding website with an itinerary and important details. This is your chance to showcase your love story and provide your guests with all the details they'll need about your wedding and destination.[11] It's a good idea to provide your guests with a list of local activities as well as an itinerary of all your wedding-related events.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Make sure to include information on group accommodations and airfare. You'll also want to include instructions on how to get to your venue.
  4. Welcome your guests when they arrive at your destination. Ideally, you'll be able to greet them in person upon their arrival. Otherwise, leaving welcome notes and gift bags full of destination essentials (like sunscreen, bug spray, and flip-flops) is a great way to make them feel welcome and included.[12]
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 9 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Planning the Details and Getting Help

  1. Develop a budget and stick to it. Together with your partner (and any family members who may be helping pay for your wedding), you'll want to decide exactly how much you can afford to spend. It's important to do plenty of research so you have an idea of how much each individual aspect of your wedding is likely to cost. Although weddings can be expensive, it is possible to plan the day of your dreams on a budget.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • Destination weddings aren't necessarily more expensive than traditional ones and can even save you money in some cases.[13] However, it's still important to have a reasonable, well-thought out budget and consider any extra expenses you're likely to incur.
  2. Enlist the help of a local wedding planner. Since you're unlikely to be able to travel back and forth multiple times to attend various appointments and meet with local vendors, it's a good idea to hire someone you can trust to take care of these details on your behalf.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • Some venues and wedding packages provide a wedding specialist.[14] In other cases, you'll need to hire someone on your own. Either way, make sure you clearly communicate your vision and ideas to whoever will be helping you plan your special day.
    • Especially if there's a language barrier, choosing an all-inclusive package where your venue does most of the work for you can take away a lot of pressure and stress.
  3. Set a date, keeping the weather and your budget in mind. Consider your destination's peak season when you decide on a date for your wedding. There may be certain seasons that are more crowded and touristy than others, and venue and vendor fees may be much higher during these times.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 12 Version 2.jpg
    • Having your wedding during your destination's "off-season" may save you money, but keep in mind that some vendors may only operate during peak season and inclement weather may be more likely.[15]
    • It's also a good idea to talk to your wedding party, as well as your close family and friends, before setting a date to make sure they're available.
  4. Find and vet your vendors carefully. Your wedding planner may have a list of vendors they regularly work with and trust in the area, so talking to them is a good place to start. You'll also want to look at any potential vendors' online portfolios and ask them for references. [16]
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 13.jpg
    • If possible, plan a trip to meet with your vendors in person. If that's not feasible, consider scheduling meetings via video chat.
    • You can also opt to bring certain vendors with you. For example, if you have a photographer you really like, or a friend who does hair and makeup, it might be worth flying them out for your wedding.
  5. Buy your plane tickets at least 6 months in advance. Airline ticket prices vary from season to season and can be unpredictable.[17] The earlier you start looking for a good deal, the better. For a trip as important as your wedding, you definitely don't want to wait until the last minute to book your flight.
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 14.jpg
  6. Dress according to your destination's weather. If you're getting married in a warm, tropical climate, you probably don't want to be wearing a heavy ball gown or wool suit. Also, keep in mind that high heels aren't well suited to ceremonies on sandy beaches.[18]
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 15.jpg
    • Make sure to suggest appropriate attire to your guests as well. You can do this on your invitations or wedding website.
  7. Arrive a few days early to help with final preparations. If possible, fly to your destination ahead of time to meet with your planner, tour your venue, rehearse for your ceremony, and make final arrangements.[19]
Plan a Destination Wedding Step 16.jpg
    • Arriving early can also help calm your nerves and prevent you from being jet-lagged on your special day.

India-bound FDI may face thorough frisking
NEW DELHI: India is taking a fresh look at security protocols to be followed by foreign direct investors as concerns rise over money coming in from countries that New Delhi has sensitive ties with and monitors closely. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the finance ministry's department of revenue and the home ministry are holding discussions on the matter, said people with knowledge of the matter. The review comes amid the rising trend of FDI being screened worldwide. The EU recently adopted a screening framework on the grounds of security and public order. The US has stepped up scrutiny of Chinese investments in the country amid a trade war over concerns about acquisition of American assets.Under the heightened oversight, the framework for disclosures made to the RBI could be enhanced for better capturing FDI inflow data and source of funds, especially in sectors on the automatic route. The DPIIT is also in talks with security agencies to determine whether existing safeguards need to be stepped up. 'Some Concerns'"There are some concerns," said a senior official aware of the deliberations. "We are looking at the constituents of the security protocol… What needs to be done."India has widened the opening for FDI, allowing overseas money into most sectors through the automatic route, having abolished the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in 2017.71623853 The government relaxed FDI norms on August 28, allowing automatic approvals for 100% FDI in mining and sale of coal, among other relaxations. Barring some sensitive sectors or select ones such as real estate, cigarettes and lotteries, the FDI policy has been substantially liberalised.FDI rose 28% to $16.3 billion in the June quarter from $12.8 billion in the year earlier. The government didn't provide a breakup of the source countries. The current security module, worked out after discussions with concerned agencies, specifies the distance at which a facility can be set up from the international border or a military establishment. There are also restrictions on investments in certain sensitive states. In the wake of fresh concerns, the government is evaluating if these components need to be revisited or new ones need to be introduced."The idea is to see if some more elements are needed," the official said.Every company has to furnish a return to the RBI prior to bringing FDI into the country and after the money has flowed in under FEMA guidelines."We could request the RBI to seek more information in line with requirement of agencies on security front," the official said.A large amount of data is already captured by the RBI, he added.Countries such as the US have a committee on foreign investment with representation from key departments such as defence, homeland security and commerce.

Restaurant bodies want Zomato to tweak ‘gold’ further - economic news of india - world economic news - economics news for students - indian economy news

Restaurant bodies want Zomato to tweak 'gold' further
MUMBAI: Two restaurant and hotel associations have once again asked food aggregator Zomato to further amend its Gold membership programme, which offers one dish or drink free with each order. The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) and the Federation of Hotels and Restaurant Association of India (FHRAI), which held a press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday, have also protested against the food delivery company's high commissions. The two associations said they were putting out guidelines that the Gurugram-based restaurant aggregator needed to follow, and one of these is to reduce discounts even further, because "discounts funded by restaurants are not acceptable."The two bodies have called Zomato for a meeting to solve the differences. "These aggregators, who are heavily funded by private equity, have to recognise that their role is that of a marketplace… they cannot decide or dictate commercial terms to and on behalf of the industry," said Gurbaxish Sigh Kohli, president, hotel and restaurant association of India (HRAWI) and vice president, FHRAI."All of these are baseless allegations, and we would only classify them as false propaganda," a Zomato spokesperson said.Zomato recently claimed that the number of restaurants adopting its Gold programme have gone up after the #log out movement by the restaurant associations, instead of decreasing. NRAI dismissed that out of hand. "Almost 3,000 restaurants have logged out because all of the top restaurants have left. And others are on notice period," said Jimmy Shaw, member, FHRAI.Originally, Zomato said it had 6,100 restaurants registered on Gold. Shaw said the associations have started targeting micro markets like malls and were talking to restaurants about Gold."We have done this in two micro markets in Gurugram and Mumbai and we'll take it all over the country," he said."They're asking us to go to particular labs to test food or they would give us a lower rating," Shaw said. Anurag Katriar, president, NRAI said, "We don't want to fight with any aggregator but if they want to, we'll be happy to."

Air India buyer may be allowed to retrench staff in a year - economic news of india - world economic news - economics news for students - indian economy news

Air India buyer may be allowed to retrench staff in a year
NEW DELHI: The government is considering a plan to make Air India more attractive for potential buyers by allowing employees to be retrenched a year after divestment, said people aware of the matter."There are the two proposals being discussed — one is to allow them to retrench after one year and the other is to give three years," said one of them. "It would make sense to allow future owners to retrench staff after a year's time."Another person said the government will ensure that the interests of employees are protected."There would be conditions like employees can only be retrenched through the government's voluntary retirement scheme (VRS)," he said.Under VRS, an employee gets an amount that's equivalent to monthly salary multiplied by either the years of service completed or those left, whichever is less, along with other compensation that the person is eligible for, said the people cited above. 71623800 Any move to allow future promoters to terminate the jobs of employees will mark a key change in last year's failed divestment process, when the government had promised job protection. All proposals are being discussed and will be put before the committee led by home minister Amit Shah for consideration, said the people cited above. The government's attempt to divest a 76% stake in Air India drew a blank last year due to various reasons. These included staffing levels, employee medical benefits as well as flying privileges for workers and their families even after retirement, alongside its towering working capital debt. The government is now looking to fully exit the carrier.Unlike last time, the government is open to suggestions from industry to ensure that the national carrier finds a buyer this time, said the people cited above."The government is also likely to provide clarity on these terms around the time bidding process begins," said one of them. "The expression of interest (EoI) is likely to be issued (in) middle or late November."The government is also working on a plan that will shield any buyer from having to bear the cost of health coverage for current and past employees.
