Third-Party Android Browser Found To Be Transmitting Every URL Visited

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 03:04 PM PDT

dolphinhdDolphin Browser HD is one of the most popular alternative browsers on Android, which is why the latest news on that front is so disconcerting. According to an exhaustive investigation by Android Police, Dolphin HD is sending all user URLs in plain text to a Dolphin webserver. The goal is to match URLs to a webzine whitelist service that Dolphin then provides to users, but as Android Police said, this is "an amateur solution."

It appears that any URL, be it secured or not is sent with no security whatsoever. For its part, Dolphin says that the data is not retained, and anyway the issue was addressed in a recent update. Though, in an update Android Police says its original version was done with the new version. Users of rooted phones can block access to the Dolphin webzines server that the data is going to. Other users are encouraged to sop using the app.

While this background service is not sending the contents of pages. it is still unacceptable to have every URL you visit sent unencrypted into the open internet. Considering the attention this is getting, we expect a fix to be incoming soon. Does this make you weary about using Dolphin HD in the future?

HP Preparing To Kill webOS For Good, Fire Staff

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 02:46 PM PDT

hpAs an addendum to yesterday's revelation that HP was staying in the PC business, it sounds like webOS is on its way to an early grave. We don't mean that the HP is going to spin it off, or re-purpose the platform for something else, we mean kill it dead and shed 500 jobs in the process. The Guardian claims to have the inside story, and the decision has already been made.

HP bought Palm in 2010 for $1.2 billion, but spent nearly a year getting the first new webOS devices out. The program was unceremoniously frozen by former HP CEO Leo Apotheker, and new CEO Meg Whitman seems to be following through on it. The speculation is backed up by Whitman's deflection of questions on webOS in the recent earnings call. She preferred to discuss Windows 8 slates over webOS.

There has been talk of selling Palm, but if HP is truly shuttering it, there must not have been any takers. It would be sad to see webOS go, but the market just might not be capable of supporting another mobile OS. Do you think this is the webOS swan song?

Google TV Finally Getting Honeycomb Update, Market Access Next Week

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 02:32 PM PDT

gtvThere are two things you need to know here. First, Google TV is still a thing. Secondly, and perhaps more startling, the long-awaited Honeycomb update is finally official. The Android 3.1 based software will be available next week, and brings a total redesign and access to more service like the Android Market. Is this going to make Google TV into an overnight success a year after introduction?

The new interface ditches those terrible text menus, and relies instead on a new desktop with icons. There is a TV and Movies app that aggregates all the video content you have access to from sources like cable/satellite, Netflix, and Amazon. The Android Market is finally going to be on Google TV, but apps that require phone hardware including touchscreens and GPS, won't show up at all. That means a smaller than expected selection of apps to start, but Google says that more than 50 developers have GTV-optimized apps ready to go.

Unfortunately, not all Google TV devices are getting the update at the same time. The Sony TV and Blu-Ray player with Google TV built in are first up next week, and the Logitech Revue will get it later. Does this make you want a Google TV device any more?

HP VP Confirms An Ultrabook Is Coming

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 11:11 AM PDT

So, it's official: HP is staying in the PC game. Way to make the right choice, Meg Whitman! But even though the company has decided to stick to the status quo and keep offering hardware for the masses, the masses are a little confused HP's recent "WTF?" business maneuvering. Whitman's well aware of the confusion the flip-flopping has caused. So how is HP going to win back the hearts and minds of customers? Maybe with a kick-ass Ultrabook. A company VP confirmed that one of the diminutive powerhouses is on HP's radar sometime down the line.

"Ultramobile is a notebook category of sub-17 millimeter notebooks," Todd Bradley, the executive vice president of HP's Personal Systems Group, said in a conference call late yesterday. "We're very focused on having a suite in that ultramobile space. And you'll see that very soon."

So there you have it: HP's finally getting into the Ultrabook game. Will its as-yet-unknown notebook be able to hang with the Ultrabooks Acer, Asus and Toshiba have put out? Only time will tell, but a strong offering would definitely help the company regain some glory in end-users' eyes.

Judge Tells San Francisco to Chillax on Cell Phone Radiation Warnings

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:51 AM PDT

A San Francisco judge on Thursday ruled that a city-wide ordinance mandating that cell phone vendors warn customers about radiation are a little too strict, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The judge took issue with both the specific warning messages and how they have to be posted, and then ordered the city to change both.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup said the warnings give off an "untrue and misleading" impression that "cell phones are dangerous and they have somehow escaped the regulatory process." He also pointed out that every single mobile phone sold in the U.S. must meet certain federally regulated safety standards set forth by the FCC.

The ordinance was to go into effect next week and require that cell phone dealers give each customer a fact sheet pointing out that RF emissions from mobile handsets have been classified as a "possible carcinogen" by the World Health Organization. Similar warnings would also have to appear on wall posters and stickers attached to display ads.

Alsup didn't overturn the entire ordinance, but did order the city to rewrite the fact sheet and remove the display requirements.

Ghoulify Your Google+ Profile Pic With New Halloween Image Filters

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:36 AM PDT

What better way is there to get in the spirit of Halloween than to dress up like a zombie or vampire and splatter blood and scars all over yourself? Answer: there isn't one. But doing that in real life takes tons of expensive costume makeup and waaaaaay more patience than we have. Fortunately, you can get the same effect without all the tedious paint application thanks to some Halloween filters available in Google+'s new Creative Kit for photos.

You can access the Creative Kit by opening up your profile and clicking on the "Photos" tab. Select the picture you want to tweak, then click Edit > Creative Kit. Up at the top, you'll see a bunch of tabs, including – you guessed it – "Halloween." The freaky filters appear on the left side of the screen. You can spruce up your looks with scars, blood spray, lightning bolts, fake beards, decayed zombie skin, vampire eyes and teeth, masks and more, including some nifty texture filters. It's a lot of fun, and after turning yourself into a putrid creature of the night, you can save the picture then set it as your profile pic on the "Profile" screen. Go check it out!

(By the way, if you feel like seeing the filters in action or following your third-favorite Maximum PC contributor's odd ramblings, you can check out my Google+ profile.)

Motorola Maserati (Droid 4) Rolls into View

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:28 AM PDT

When it launches, Motorola's Maserati will be known as the Droid 4, so that should alleviate any confusion as to whether Motorola's getting into the automobile business (it's not). Hardcore typists who want nothing to do with a virtual keyboard and prefer to pilot a physical plank will want to take the Droid 4 out for a spin, on 4G LTE highways, no less.

Droid-Life.com got its hands on a few leaked photos of the Droid 4 and was able to dig up some specs. According to the site's sources, the physical keyboard, which is the best "ever seen on a smartphone," is just one of several features to be excited about.

The Droid 4 will ride into town with a 4-inch Super AMOLED windshield, a RAZR style chassis, 4G LTE support, 1080p video recording, front-facing camera, HDMI, MotoACTV syncing, and Android 2.3.5 in the driver's seat.

What isn't yet known is the processor (probably a dual-core chip clocked above 1GHz), RAM, and included storage space. One downer though is a battery that's non-removable -- how Apple-esque.

DC Universe Online Introducing Free-To-Play November 1st

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:13 AM PDT

If none of the titles we mentioned in our free to play game roundup tickles your fancy, you're clearly a picky gamer – there's 25 totally free titles to choose from, after all. But let's say that you're less of a freeloading Team Fortress 2 kinda gamer and more of, say, a freeloading DC Universe Online kinda gamer. You're out of luck right now, because DC Universe Online is only available to paying customers. That's changing soon, though – Sony's introducing a free, if somewhat hobbled, subscription option on November 1st.

For the low, low price of $0, you'll be able to play the base game to your heart's content. You'll be hamstringed compared to other players, though; the free version is limited to 2 character slots, 28 inventory slots, 0 auction slots, 1500 max currency and 6 text chat messages every thirty seconds – no voice chat allowed. Oh yeah, you can't trade with other players, either. If you buy $5 worth of in-game purchases, you'll be tossed into the "Premium" tier, which raises a lot of those caps to, well, even higher caps. Or, you can spend $15 a month on a "Legendary" subscription that opens up tons of various slots and abilities as well as free access to DLC content.

Even though the freebie limitations are kind of harsh, you can't beat the price. Not sure which tier is right for you? Check out the tier-by-tier breakdown over at the DC Universe Online website.

Bill Gates: Hamburgers Taste the Same When You're a Billionaire

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 09:39 AM PDT

We tend to agree with Bruno Mars that being a billionaire would frickin' rock, and so would being on the cover of Forbes Magazine. And who wouldn't like to play a game of pickup ball with the President and flush one down over top of his delegates? Travie McCoy gets it. But hey, you can take it from Bill Gates that while being rich is grand and all, it's just more of the same.

The billionaire Harvard dropout and Microsoft founder recently spoke to students and faculty at the University of Washington, in which he stressed the importance of education and how it ties into philanthropy. And then he held a Q&A session, during which time a student asked Gates how she could make herself rich, just like him.

"I can understand wanting to have millions of dollars, there's a certain freedom, meaningful freedom, that comes with that," Gates responded, according to GeekWire.com. "But once you get much beyond that, I have to tell you, it's the same hamburger. [Seattle fast food joint] Dick's has not raised their prices enough. But being ambitious is good. You just have to pick what you enjoy doing."

Until we become billionaires ourselves, we'll have to take his word for it. In the meantime, there's always In-N-Out and Five Guys, if you happen to live near either one.

AERIA GAMES RELEASES FREE-To-Play Golden Age Online RTS WITH rpg ELEMENTS

Leading Free-to-play Online Multiplayer Publisher Brings a New Class of Strategy and Roleplaying Game to Player Browsers

SANTA CLARA – October 27, 2011 – Aeria Games, a leading destination for free-to-play online multiplayer games, today officially launched its highly anticipated Real-Time Strategy (RTS) browser-based title Golden Age in North America and Europe. Golden Age is an expansive strategy game infused with roleplaying elements to deliver a fresh RTS experience. The free-to-play game is set in a tumultuous medieval setting inspired by the history of the Knights Templar, blending traditional browser-based RTS gameplay with role-playing game elements to deliver a beautifully-rendered and immersive experience.

In Golden Age, players create a Sire and interact in Sanctum City, the game's side-scrolling, RPG-style town, and fight solo or cooperatively to conquer territories and expand their empires. Players build and maintain cities and manage resources while also receiving and completing RPG-like missions and quests that take them into instanced dungeons to fight villains and monsters to gain experience and loot.

"Golden Age delivers a dynamic medieval RTS game world enriched with roleplaying elements right in your browser," said Lan Hoang, Chief Executive Officer, Aeria Games. "The extremely positive feedback from our beta shows that players are excited as our game moves the web RTS genre forward with refined in-game systems and player options as well as upgraded graphics that let players see tiny villagers moving through their cities."

In Sanctum City, Golden Age players can move through side-scrolling city streets and talk to an array of non-player characters (NPC) to gain quests and delve into dungeons to level up, similar to an RPG game. They can also attack resource points and plunder wildernesses in player-versus-environment (PvE) battles before they venture forth to attack in strategic player-versus-player (PvP) battles. As players build their cities up from a simple base to expansive, powerful medieval strongholds, they can watch their city grow in a rich landscape that includes workers and peasants moving from building to building—an immersive contrast to the static cities of many RTS games. Players build and maintain diverse military resources, including infantry, cavalry, mages, trebuchets, spies, and a host of ruthless offensive and defensive tactics as they plot their path to domination.

The launch of Golden Age is accompanied by in-game events including Top Sire and Top Alliance contests. Like all browser games from Aeria Games, no download is required and the game is free to play. To play Golden Age or get more information on the game, visit http://goldenage.aeriagames.com.

MMORPG Etiquette

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 12:41 PM PDT

Some of us have been playing online games for a while now.  Most of us (I assume) have been living in reality for a while as well, and we’ve probably become aware of little unspoken rules and codes of behavior that apply to us when doing a social activity.  Some of these are codified as laws (don’t murder people, don’t steal stuff, don’t kidnap your neighbor’s dog, etc.) and some of them are simply expected politeness and courtesy (cover your mouth when you cough, don’t yell in a restaurant, don’t stare at boobs, etc.).  The realm of MMORPGs is much like this.  Certain behaviors like harassment are prevented by GM enforcement (we hope), while other behaviors are rude and don’t win you any friends, but aren’t exactly breaking the rules.

What unspoken rules exist vary from game to game.  Some games are open PVP with corpse-looting, and so these games are essentially nothing more than frightening, lawless swamps inhabited by bandits and teabaggers.  This is a less common model, these days, for what I hope are obvious reasons.  Not many people enjoy having their relaxing game-time interrupted by having their character trampled to death by a horde of axe-wielding centaurs in a guild called "t3h h4xx0rz r3p0rt."

There is no such thing as etiquette in these games.  Like a hostage with stockholm syndrome, you’ll find yourself thanking people for not calling you "lol gaynoob" and crouch-humping your ruined body.  Of course, some guilds might form bastions of civilization, but in my experience, the shameless, barbarian hordes will always outnumber the honorable, civilized folk.

Then you have the WoW-style MMORPG.  We’ll assume everyone reading this knows what I’m talking about.  Etiquette in these kinds of games is as simple as "don’t ninja loot" and "don’t kill-steal."  At a glance, we might think that a game with rules as strict as this have no opportunity for a lone lunatic to cause mayhem – in general, you’d be wrong.  Sure, you could argue that getting blacklisted is a huge deterrent against bad behavior, but that doesn’t stop people from doing things like joining a guild, building up trust, and then cleaning out the guild bank, only to disappear like a thief in the night.

But of course, you ruin your credibility as a player.  But, who cares?!  It’s just a game.  Lolz, look at those noobs scramble and rage!

rageee

I am not endorsing this behavior.  I think.

Then you have everything else.  The match-based FPS, if it has voice-chat, appreciates it when you don’t abuse this privilege and scream into your microphone like an alarmed rabbit every time a flag is being captured (have you ever heard a rabbit scream?  It sounds a lot like an angry 13-year old boy squealing).  RTS games like Starcraft?  Always end the match with a "GG."  Same goes with League of Legends and others.  Don’t be a jerk and mock a downed opponent, and don’t be an ass and complain when you lose.

Really, it all just comes down to walking a fine line between remembering that it’s just a game, and that also, there are thousands of other human beings behind those avatars with some degree of investment in what’s happening.

Tl;dr version:  Don’t be a dick.

Eligium reveals two races

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 12:08 PM PDT

The official website for Eligium – The Chosen One launched yesterday. In addition, Frogster provided details for two of the game’s races: Pandas and Elves.

At level 15, the monastic Pandas may choose from two specializations. Fire Breathers focus on long range magic attacks and fortification spells, while the other (unnamed) path focuses on close-quarters physical combat that can create clones in battle.

Meanwhile, the Elves are masters of Archery. Scouts may focus on precise long-range attacks, while the secondary option grants defensive abilities and stealth.

Frogster also publishes Runes of Magic.

Frogster Announces ELIGIUM Races and Classes

– New Website Introduces Pandas and Elves –

SAN FRANCISCO and BERLIN – October 27, 2011 - Berlin publisher Frogster launched the official website for the fantasy MMO ELIGIUM – The Chosen One earlier today. At www.eligium.com , fans will now find a forum as well as a growing library of in-depth information and videos on the game's races and classes. Details of the pandas and elven races were revealed today.

The Pandas – Masters of Martial Arts
For years they train in the secluded monasteries of their homeland, tempering body and spirit with the aspiration of becoming a monk. Once they have achieved this status, they are able to harness the power of their chi – the energy that flows through every living being – and harness it in battle. Using this life force, they instill fear in their foes, both in close combat as well as long-range fighting. Like the other races, pandas are given the choice between two skill specializations once they have reached level 15.

One such specialization is that of the Fire Breather. Panda monks with this designation particularly excel at fortification spells and long-range magical attacks, for example Breath of Fire, which hurls a mighty blast of flame at unsuspecting opponents. In contrast, pandas that opt for the other specialization develop into terrifying close-combat fighters. Through their training, they can learn to create several clones of themselves for support in battle.

The Elves – Arcane Forest Dwellers
The elves are one of the oldest of the four races of Galgaron. These mysterious creatures have inhabited the dense forests since the dawn of time, and over the centuries they have become true masters of long-range combat. As hunters and trappers, they have mastered archery like no other race and always hit their mark, no matter how distant. Like the pandas, elves also have two specialization options. The first is that of the Scout, who is able to attack with deadly precision. The second specialization is of a more defensive nature. Elves who choose this path learn to become almost invisible, darting from one shadow to the next and expertly utilizing every possible opportunity for concealment.

EVE offering bonuses to new players [Updated]

    EVE Online - Apotheosis frigate
There's no better time to take the plunge with EVE Online, as CCP is offering up a new promotion designed to ease the newbie transition into the harsh realm of New Eden. According to a news blurb on the official EVE website, new accounts will receive free cerebral accelerator implants.

These doohickeys "are military-grade implants that significantly increase a new pilot's skill development [...] Capsuleer training renders it ineffective after a while; as such, it will cease to function for pilots who have been registered for more than 35 days," according to the website.

Pilots will also receive a rare frigate (an Apotheosis) if they can manage to invite a friend via EVE's buddy program and convince said friend to upgrade to a paid account.

[Update]: CCP has also announced that its Power of 2 special offer is back (through November 28th). Existing players can create an alt account and get 180 days of free game time or three PLEX, for $49.95. Additionally, your character on the new account will receive a cerebral accelerator.

New Perpetuum patch introduces Sparks, Extension Downgrading

    Screenshot -- Perpetuum
A new patch just hit Perpetuum, and it brings Sparks and Extension Downgrading along with it. No idea what either of those things are? Don't worry, that's why we're here. Sparks are nanobots in the Perpetuum universe, which are able to grant small but permanent bonuses to a player's bot. A number of these Sparks are already available in-game and can be unlocked either by paying a one-time NIC fee, or by reaching "a certain level of relation with a corporation." Sparks will also be available for Energy Credit when the system goes live later on down the road.

Extension Downgrading is exactly what it sounds like. It allows players to downgrade the level of their mechs' extensions in order to receive a full EP and NIC refund. The feature is largely intended for new players who aren't sure how to build their bots, so it will only be available to players for 30 days after the creation of their first character. However, since it's a new system, current players will be able to use the feature for 30 days after the feature goes live.

For the full details on the patch, boost yourself over to the official Perpetuum site.

New video showcases EverQuest II: Age of Discovery's mercenary system

    HE LOOKS LIKE A BABY
In the new promotional trailer for EverQuest II's Age of Discovery expansion, poor Gnoob the gnaked gnome just can't win. Maybe if he was smart enough to spell his name properly, he might not get mauled by the same wolf over and over.

After learning that maybe a naked Gnome isn't quite suited to square off against a hungry wolf, Gnoob takes it upon himself to hire an Ogre mercenary (though you'd think if he could afford a mercenary, he could afford some clothes), but even that doesn't go quite right. It just goes to show you that the mercenary system, coming to EverQuest II with Age of Discovery, should be used with discretion. For the full video, follow on past the cut.

TERA's Korean version influenced by Western feedback

      TERA
While we're still impatiently drumming our fingers waiting for TERA to release in the West, it turns out that our feedback is causing real change in the game's live Korean edition. According to a forum post by Producer Chris Hager, Bluehole Studio has taken several suggestions passed along by En Masse and is incorporating it into the live version of the game. Hager says that this is "just a taste" of how the two developers are interacting and collaborating.

On November 24th, the next big Korean update will hit the servers, and with it the implemented suggestions from En Masse's fans. This update will include a dungeon finder system, rest XP, group XP bonuses, modified PvP rules, a guild battle system, and "more skill diversity through new master Glyphs." Oh, and there will be the ability to sit, because roleplayers would be lost otherwise.

"This is a very exciting time for us as we are starting to see what true collaboration looks like," Hager writes, "and it also shows that you guys do carry a voice with us. The best part is that there is more to come."

      Cannibal Corpse
During BlizzCon last week, the lead singer of Cannibal Corpse, affectionately known as George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, was shown in a video explaining just how much he hates Alliance players in World of Warcraft. Although the video was censored and edited from its original version for the live crowd, the video is notorious for being filled with anti-gay slurs used to describe his hatred of the Alliance.

Taking quick action to apologize for the lapse in judgment, Blizzard's president, Mike Morhaime, issued a written statement to GayGamer.net taking personal responsibility for airing the video, which you can read in its entirety after the cut.

      But no clowns.
It's always a bit of a scary time in RIFT's setting of Telara. After all, it's rough to think that at any moment the sky could tear open right next to your favorite restaurant and turn it into a shrieking pit of death. So you can imagine that things get even jumpier around this time of year, what with everyone seeing death around every corner and undead in every shadow. What's a resident of Telara to do?

Well, fortunately, there are Ascended running around to keep the world safe on a day-to-day basis. But as the video just past the break shows, when you're facing something a bit more frightening than the average day, you need to call on a more formidable set of allies. Check on past the cut to see RIFT's holiday spectacular in all its glory, a reminder that even in these times of darkness, there are knights around every corner.

The Daily Grind: Do you support your favorite MMO by staying subbed, even if you don't play anymore?

With so many MMOs to choose from these days, it's not uncommon for players to switch between games when a new one catches their eyes. With subscription-based games, you always have to make sure you cancel that sub if you're moving on to another game. This, of course, is one of the strongest arguments in favor of free-to-play games.

But that's not what this Daily Grind topic is about! Today, we want to know whether you've ever stayed subbed to a game, even when you've stopped playing for a few months. Usually this happens accidentally when we forget to cancel the sub, but sometimes we just want to help support the development team with a few extra dollars. Have you ever kept your sub going while not playing, and why?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Are you a Wurm Online player looking for a sense of purpose? Well, look no further than the game's Epic servers, which went live today. Not sure what Wurm Epic is? Well, you're in luck once more because over at the game's official site, Code Club CEO Rolf Jansson has posted an FAQ that covers everything you need to know about the new game type.

The basic concept is this: Players both new and old can take a portal from the main game world to the Epic servers. From there, they will be stripped of all their items and skills, though they will retain all gold in their banks. After that, it's the duty of the players to build and defend kingdoms, which in turn further the goals of their gods on the moon of Valrei. Gods, in turn, have the ability to "reshape the world or spawn creature invasions as a result of how well they achieve their goals." For the full, detailed FAQ, head on over to the game's official site.

Have you ever wished that instead of having to go to your job, you could just turn on the computer, log in to an avatar in the same manner as an MMO, and take care of everything that way? Perhaps to the surprise of no one, Richard Garriott has begun doing precisely that at his company, Portalarium. Rather than commuting between New York and the studio in Austin, Garriott has a small robotic avatar to allow him a face-to-video-monitor presence in Austin even when he's away.

The robot itself is a $15,000 Anybot QB from the eponymous company Anybots, Inc, which Garriott claims was originally purchased so that his mother could virtually attend his wedding in France. He also stresses that it's not a means of keeping tabs on employees, merely a way to bridge the gap between two very distant locations. And really, if you had just won millions of dollars in a lawsuit, wouldn't you be attending all events via robot?

"Ah crap, it's BlizzCon again?" asks Casey Schreiner in this week's MMO Report. 'Fraid so! At the Anaheim con, Casey interviewed World of Warcraft Lead Producer J. Allen Brack about the Mists of Pandaria expansion, covering the neutral Pandaren race, the Monk class, the talent system overhaul, pet combat, world bosses, battlegrounds, challenge mode, retro dungeons, and beer.

He also found time to chat with a few fans, cut in line, sniff markers, wade into a loot elemental money machine, polish off some voiceovers for Jaina and Thrall, and play with WoW-themed LEGOs. I mean, MEGA Bloks.

Casey's takeaway? "We all learned something very valuable here: that internet rumors can sometimes be true. So thanks for ruining Christmas, The Internet!"

DC Universe Online to go free-to-play on November 1st

Free and clear. In terms of payments, anyway. This scene is kind of a mess.
It was promised and now it's come true. Yesterday, we were promised that today would see the revelation of the date for DC Universe Online's business model switch, but now we're here, and all the tortured chronological phrasing doesn't change the fact of the matter. On Tuesday, November 1st, the game will be launching its hybrid business model, according to the live webcast taking place at the time of this announcement.

As reported previously, the game will be moving into a tiered model, allowing players to access the game with no subscription requirement. Current subscribers who continue to maintain the monthly fee will gain access to a variety of perks, starting (obviously) on November 1st, but if you've always been curious about the game, get ready to jump in and dress up the day after Halloween. Expect further details to be available from Sony Online Entertainment in the near future.

Gamebreaker.TV has put the finishing touches on episode 67 of This Week in MMO, and you get two guesses as to the primary topic. OK, it's not all about pandas, panda-induced fanboi raging, and much-publicized expansion packs.

Host Gary Gannon brings together ZAM's Mike B and Beckett Massive Online Gamer's Jason Winter for a lengthy jaunt through the week's MMO news, and the trio has a lot of ground to cover besides Mists of Pandaria.

Final Fantasy XIV's return to the realm of the subscription fee generates some discussion, as does CCP's downsizing spree. Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium's far-future release date gets a mention, and did Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online forums get hacked? Head to Gamebreaker to see what the guys think.

              Captain's Log, Stardate 65322.9...

Hello, computer (and players)! For the past several weeks, Star Trek Online players have been checking out the latest F2P beta builds on the Tribble test server. While there have been a few patches on other days, more for stability fixes and minor tweaking, Thursdays seem to be the designated day for us to receive the largest pushes of new content. The latest round of updates has brought further economy changes, new events and ships, and even more heated debates. Since we seem to be a ways out from the seeing the updates ported to the Holodeck live server, there is still plenty of time to check it all out and provide your feedback to the devs.

I would like to dedicate this entry to those who are helping test the changes. This week's Captain's Log serves as a checklist of sorts on what new content you can test and where you can provide feedback about it. As you read through, I suggest that you read a particular section, jump into game to check out the particular change, formulate an opinion, and head to the linked forum where you can leave your feedback. No matter what you think, it's important to let the devs know -- they will make changes based upon a collective opinion.

Ensign, warp 10! It's time to create our own party rock anthem...

If the rumors are true, today has not been the best of days for MMO industry staffers. Hot on the heels of our NCsoft layoff story comes distressing news for fans of GamersFirst, as we've just received an anonymous tip concerning the apparent dismissal of 32 people from the firm's west coast office.

According to our tipster, "Most of the APB team was let go. A lot of the support staff was let go. The development team was not, to my knowledge, so the game is still being developed in Scotland." We've also been told that GamersFirst's CFO was let go.

We've reached out to G1 for clarification on this story, and as of press time there is no official word on the staffing decisions or how the shake-up will affect Fallen Earth and the rest of the company's free-to-play lineup.

[Updated: Reader alacritythief let us know that GamersFirst's Revoemnag and TechMech have responded to the layoffs in regard to APB's future. Their comments are just behind the break.]

Last week's Behind the Mask covered Champions Online's super team support solo monster, the Mind, but I thought it would be prudent to cover the other ways a player can support a team. Some of this will tread existing ground, as I've already talked about the Mind and Grimoire archetypes in previous editions, and both have one of the four team support options.

I'll be covering the Mind's passive in more detail, taking a brief look again at the Grimoire's passive as well as covering the other two options, Seraphim and Medical Nanites. While we don't have a Celestial archetype just yet, it is only a matter of time before Cryptic adds one, so this will give a bit of a preview for what a Celestial healer plays like.

Wakfu, Ankama Games' upcoming tactical MMORPG, has been in beta for quite some time now, and people were beginning to wonder if it would ever get a release date. Well, wonder no more. Ankama has released a rather stylish trailer in order to announce the game's prospective launch window.

You can find the trailer after the cut, but just in case you're terribly impatient, the game is slated to release in February, 2012. Now what are you waiting for? Go watch the trailer. It's adorable.

For DOTA and League of Legends fans out there, Nival's Prime World shares a competitive spirit that's worth keeping an eye on as it goes through development. The Facebook-integrated game encourages players to build up their castles, band together to fight mobs, and face off against each other in battles of supreme strategy and bloodsplosions.

Nival has released a new set of screenshots today showing off Prime World's combat in action. The studio is proud of the rich colorset and visuals it's created for the game, and the team is hoping that they will appeal to those interested in good-looking PvP.

You can check out all of the action-packed screenies in the gallery below!

Emotes: They're not just for Elves, Hobbits, Dwarves, and Men any longer. Naaay, Turbine is preparing to give emote love in Lord of the Rings Online to player mounts as well. Players' horses and goats will soon be able to rear up, kick, and bow with the best of them.

While the emotes are not yet available in the game, CM Sapience announced on the forums that players have a chance to win one for free through the LotRO lottos:
All weekend long we'll be running lotteries for the brand new, unreleased, Mounted Rear Up emote. That's right, Mount Emotes are coming to the LotRO Store! Enter the lotteries this weekend and you could win it for free, before your friends can buy it. You'll have a few weeks to show it off and brag before it hits the LotRO Store.

Check back often as new lotteries will be starting randomly throughout the weekend and on Halloween!
The LotRO lottery system is available on the my.lotro website.

                        Star Supremacy
As Star Supremacy continues its star trek through beta and toward release, Barbily Games has a few treats (but not tricks) in store for testers. After gathering feedback and bug reports from players in the beta, the dev team has whipped up a few hefty updates that should improve the game end-to-end. These updates include an improved UI, a chat system, alliances, item trading, and a tutorial.

And even though the team is mired in beta craziness, there's always time for a little Halloween fun. The Star Supremacy devs have issued a challenge to players to find hidden GM bases. Those that do will be rewarded with special in-game items, such as pumpkin helmets and longevity tokens.

Finally, Barbily is giving away gaming headsets to a few lucky fans that have "liked" the game's Facebook page. The drawing will happen when the page reaches 30,000 likes.

Star Supremacy will be heading into open beta on November 15th.

EVE Online - Gallente Talos mockup
Another day, another piece of good news for EVE Online. Are we sensing a trend here? At any rate, the latest CCP dev blog reveals the Gallente Talos, the newest New Eden internet spaceship that will find its way into the hands of capsuleers everywhere when EVE's winter expansion finally hits.

If the Talos looks strangely familiar, that's probably because you saw it during EVE's Create a Starship contest last spring. Like its recently revealed Minmatar counterpart, the Talos is a battlecruiser, and CCP describes it as an "in your face glass cannon." Warp to the official EVE website for some more pics and the full dev blog.

Otherland dev video talks design and going off the rails

                          Otherland dev working on something
What's happening in the world of Otherland? How about a new making-of video, for starters. RealU and gamigo, the developer and publisher responsible for bringing Tad Williams' sci-fi novels into the MMORPG realm, are offering up a new five-minute clip that takes fans behind the scenes for a brief look at the development process inside the game's Singapore studio. The clip is full of quick glimpses of devs at work as well as a few talking head soundbytes.

In terms of how the game plays, the most revealing quote comes from lead designer Nic Cusworth. "What we've been trying to do is bring those skills from a console game background into an MMO and give players something that's a little bit more immediate, more fast-paced to play. But at the same time, it has the scope and range of an MMO," he says.

How will that scope and range manifest itself in the finished game? That's still speculation at this point, but the devs seem united in their desire to highlight Otherland's openness and its willingness to deviate from MMO norms. "We all like online games, but I find it quite frustrating how people's conceptions and ideas are so railed," says art director Holger Liebnitz. Check out the full clip after the cut.

Earlier this morning Massively received an anonymous tip that NCsoft terminated an undisclosed number of employees at its Austin, Brighton, and Seattle offices earlier this month. According to our tipster, "many operations jobs are leaving Austin and being contracted back to Seoul," and there were further layoffs in the quality assurance and billing departments, with "with many more put on 60-day notice."

We contacted NCsoft for an official comment and received the following reply:

"In an effort to put a greater focus on the success of the Western-developed games from NCsoft, and the long-term services MMOs require, we announced a global restructuring to our Western publishing team. To optimize the streamlining efforts, limited functionality is moving to our headquarters in Seoul, and some publishing support has been reduced. As a result, there has been a reduction in force that has impacted less than 2 percent of our global workforce. We remain committed to fully support the development of games from ArenaNet, Carbine Studios and Paragon Studios."

We'll keep you up to date on the situation as it develops and as we learn more.
