France 24: Romania marks 30 years since revolt against Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu

Romanians are remembering those who died during the nine-day revolt against Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu some 30 years after the uprising and asking questions about the legacy of the revolution.

Born in 1918, Ceausescu become president of Romania in 1974 and built up an intense cult of personality, which ended with his overthrow in the anti-communist revolution of December 1989.

On December 21, 1989, Ceausescu gave a televised speech in Bucharest that ended when some in the crowd repeatedly interrupted him. The dictator fled the stage and people flooded the streets, confronted by soldiers and tanks.

There’s a 50% Chance Notre Dame Cathedral Won’t Be Saved, Rector Says

Posted: 25 Dec 2019 01:55 AM PST

(PARIS) — The rector of Notre Dame Cathedral says the Paris landmark is still so fragile that there’s a “50% chance” the structure might not be entirely saved, because scaffolding installed before this year’s fire is threatening the vaults of the Gothic monument.

Monsignor Patrick Chauvet said restoration work isn’t likely to begin until 2021 — and described his “heartache” at not being able to celebrate Christmas services inside Notre Dame this year, for the first time since the French Revolution.

“Today it is not out of danger,” he told The Associated Press on the sidelines of Christmas Eve midnight Mass in a nearby church. “It will be out of danger when we take out the remaining scaffolding.”

“Today we can say that there is maybe a 50% chance that it will be saved. There is also 50% chance of scaffolding falling onto the three vaults, so as you can see the building is still very fragile,” he said.

The 12th-century cathedral was under renovation at the time of the accidental April fire, which destroyed its roof and collapsed its spire. One of the toughest parts of the cleanup effort is cutting down the 50,000 tubes of old scaffolding that crisscrossed the back of the edifice.

“We need to remove completely the scaffolding in order to make the building safe so in 2021 we will probably start the restoration of the cathedral,” Chauvet said. “Once the scaffolding is removed we need to assess the state of the cathedral, the quantity of stones to be removed and replaced.”

He estimated it would take another three years after that to make it safe enough for people to re-enter the cathedral, but that the full restoration will take longer. President Emmanuel Macron has said he wants it rebuilt by 2024, when Paris hosts the Olympics, but experts have questioned whether that time frame is realistic.

Unable to celebrate Christmas in Notre Dame this year, its congregation, clergy and choir decamped to the Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois Church across from the Louvre Museum instead.

Parishioners at Christmas Eve Mass shared sorrow about the fire, but also a feeling of solidarity.

“I remember my mother told me that she was watching TV, and that there was a fire at Notre Dame. I told her ‘it’s not possible,’ and I took my bike, and when I arrived I was crying,” said Jean-Luc Bodam, a Parisian engineer who used to cross town to attend services at the cathedral.

“We are French, we are going to try to rebuild Notre Dame as it was before, because it is a symbol,” he said.

Pirates Have Attacked 5 Ships in 4 Days in the Singapore Strait

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 08:30 PM PST

Pirates attacked five ships over four days in one of the world’s busiest shipping channels, including two separate attempts on Monday, the Straits Times reported.

Just after midnight on Monday, pirates attacked a crude oil tanker in the Singapore Strait. Within two hours of that, there was another attack on a dry bulk carrier. They tied up crew members in both incidents but failed to rob the ships as alarms were triggered on both occasions, the newspaper reported late on Monday.

The ships in question in Monday’s attacks were 105,000 dead weight ton crude oil tanker Bamzi and dry bulk carrier Trust Star. Bamzi loaded from Basrah in Iraq in November and is headed for Qingdao in China, according to Bloomberg tanker tracking data. Trust Star sailed from Gothenburg in Sweden in November and is headed for Huanghua in China, according to the data.

There have been 29 piracy incidents in the Singapore Strait so far in 2019, the Straits Times said. The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia’s Information Sharing Centre had issued alerts after three piracy attempts in the strait on Dec. 20, it said.

Putin Says Russia Has Surpassed the U.S. in Hypersonic Weapons

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 08:00 PM PST

(MOSCOW) — President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia has got a strong edge in designing new weapons and that it has become the only country in the world to deploy hypersonic weapons.

Speaking at a meeting with top military brass, Putin said that for the first time in history Russia is now leading the world in developing an entire new class of weapons unlike in the past when it was catching up with the United States.

The Russian leader noted that during Cold War times, the Soviet Union was behind the United States in designing the atomic bomb and building strategic bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“Now we have a situation that is unique in modern history when they are trying to catch up to us,” he said. “Not a single country has hypersonic weapons, let alone hypersonic weapons of intercontinental range.”

The Pentagon and the U.S. military services have been working on the development of hypersonic weapons in recent years, and Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in August that he believes “it’s probably a matter of a couple of years” before the U.S. has one. He has called it a priority as the military works to develop new long-range fire capabilities.

The U.S. also has repeatedly warned Congress about hypersonic missiles being developed by Russia and China that will be harder to track and defeat. U.S. officials have talked about putting a layer of sensors in space to more quickly detect enemy missiles, particularly the more advanced hypersonic threats. The administration also plans to study the idea of basing interceptors in space, so the U.S. can strike incoming enemy missiles during the first minutes of flight when the booster engines are still burning.

Asked to comment on Putin’s remarks, a spokesman for the U.S. Defense Department, Lt. Col. Robert Carver, said Tuesday in an email, “We have seen the reporting but have nothing to add concerning Russia’s claims.”

Putin said that the first unit equipped with the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle is set to go on duty this month, while the air-launched Kinzhal hypersonic missiles already have entered service.

The Russian leader first mentioned the Avangard and the Kinzhal among other prospective weapons systems in his state-of-the-nation address in March 2018.

Putin said then that the Avangard has an intercontinental range and can fly in the atmosphere at a speed 20 times the speed of sound. He noted that the weapon’s ability to change both its course and its altitude en route to a target makes it immune to interception by the the enemy.

“It’s a weapon of the future, capable of penetrating both existing and prospective missile defense systems,” Putin said Tuesday.

The Kinzhal, which is carried by MiG-31 fighter jets, entered service with the Russian air force last year. Putin has said that the missile flies 10 times faster than the speed of sound, has a range of more than 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) and can carry a nuclear or a conventional warhead. The military said it’s capable of hitting both land targets and navy ships.

The United States and other countries also have worked on designing hypersonic weapons, but they haven’t entered service yet.

The Kremlin has made military modernization its top priority amid tensions with the West that followed the 2014 Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea.

Putin on Tuesday described a buildup of NATO’s forces near Russia’s western borders and the U.S. withdrawal earlier this year from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty among top security threats.

He argued that Russia must have the best weapons in the world.

“It’s not a chess game where it’s OK to play to a draw,” he said. “Our technology must be better. We can achieve that in key areas and we will.”

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported Tuesday that the military this year has received 143 warplanes and helicopters, 624 armored vehicles, a submarine and eight surface warships. He said that the modernization of Russia’s arsenals will continue at the same rapid pace next year, with 22 intercontinental ballistic missiles, 106 new aircraft, 565 armored vehicles, three submarines and 14 surface ships to enter duty.

Putin noted that the work to develop other prospective weapons, including the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile, the Poseidon nuclear-powered underwater drone and the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile was going according to plan.

The Burevestnik has stoked particular controversy. The U.S. and the Soviet Union worked on nuclear-powered rocket engines during the Cold War, but they eventually spiked those projects considering them to be too hazardous.

The Burevestnik reportedly suffered an explosion in August during tests at a Russian navy range on the White Sea, killing five nuclear engineers and two servicemen and resulting in a brief spike in radioactivity that fueled radiation fears in a nearby city. Russian officials never named the weapon involved in the incident, but the U.S. said it was the Burevestnik.

Pope Francis Says God Loves ‘Even the Worst of Us’ at Christmas Midnight Mass

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 07:06 PM PST

(VATICAN CITY) — Pope Francis assured the faithful on Christmas Eve that God loves everyone — “even the worst of us” — as he celebrated the joyous birth of Christ after a less-than-joyful year of scandals and opposition.

With a choir singing the classic Christmas hymn “The First Noel,” Francis processed down the center aisle of St. Peter’s Basilica late Tuesday and unveiled a statue of the newborn Jesus lying in a nativity scene at the foot of the altar.

Francis said the birth of Jesus, which Christians commemorate on Christmas Day, was a reminder of God’s unconditional love for everyone, “even the worst of us.”

“God does not love you because you think and act the right way,” he said. “You may have mistaken ideas, you may have made a complete mess of things, but the Lord continues to love you.”

At the same time though, he called for the faithful to allow themselves to be transformed by Jesus’ “crazy love” and to stop trying to change others.

“May we not wait for our neighbors to be good before we do good to them, for the church to be perfect before we love her, for others to respect us before we serve them. Let us begin with ourselves,” he said.

Francis has frequently emphasized his call for “personal conversion” in his reform-minded papacy, believing that true reform cannot be imposed from on high, but discerned from within. He has similarly denounced the “holier-than-thou” attitude of doctrinal and legal purists, who have chafed at his progressive openings to gays, divorcees and people on the margins.

Those critics have seized on the sexual abuse and financial scandals that have buffeted the papacy of the 83-year-old Jesuit pope.

The scandals are likely to follow Francis into 2020, with developments in a corruption investigation involving hundreds of millions of dollars in donations to the Holy See and the release of a report on what the Vatican knew about ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was defrocked for sexually abusing adults and minors,

Francis’ late-night Mass kicks off a busy few days for the pope, including a Christmas Day speech, noontime prayers, a New Year’s Eve vigil and a Jan. 1 Mass.

Colors of the Mountain Author Da Chen Dies at 57

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 06:36 PM PST

(LOS ANGELES) — Da Chen, the brilliant storyteller who drew from the hardships he suffered as a persecuted child growing up in the midst of China’s cultural revolution to create the critically acclaimed memoir “Colors of the Mountain,” has died at age 57.

Chen died of lung cancer on Dec. 17, his wife, Dr. Sun-Ling Chen, told The Associated Press on Tuesday from the family’s home in Temecula, California.

His most recent book, “Girl Under a Red Moon,” was published just three months ago.

Chen’s breakthrough came in 1999 with the critically acclaimed, best-selling “Colors of the Mountain,” in which he recounted the abuses he and his family suffered during the latter years of the country’s Cultural Revolution.

It was a time when the Communist Party and its leader, Max Zedong, were cementing their grip on power following the country’s 1949 revolution and Chen’s family, who had been prosperous landowners, became pariahs, as did many others.

Chen was bullied in school and eventually kicked out to work in farm fields as a pre-teen while his father and grandfather, college-educated intellectuals, were tortured and sent to reeducation camps.

“He watched his father being hung up by his thumbs and beaten and his grandfather stoned frequently with rocks thrown at him by children,” Chen’s wife said. “He would undergo a lot of humiliation parades where they would throw fruit and other things at him. Frequently he was sent to labor camps where he worked with people twice his age digging irrigation trenches in the mountains.”

Eventually a kindhearted teacher sneaked Chen back into school and, after Mao died in 1976, he was allowed to take the country’s college entrance exam on which he scored among the highest in the country. He was admitted to the prestigious Beijing Language and Cultural University where upon graduation he joined the faculty teaching English.

After being offered a scholarship to Nebraska’s Union College, Chen recalled arriving in the United States with little more than $30 and his treasured bamboo flute. He supported himself for a time as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant.

“He always said he was one of the best Chinese waiters in Lincoln, Nebraska,” his wife recalled with a chuckle.

Soon after his arrival in Nebraska, however, he received a scholarship offer from Columbia University and headed to New York.

After earning a law degree, he went to work as an investment banker on Wall Street. That’s when he also began to turn his hand to writing, inspired by the great thriller writer John Grisham.

He tried twice to write a legal thriller like Grisham’s, recalled his wife who worked as his editor. She described the first effort as “awful” and the second as “mediocre.”

It was after the second one, she told him, that he ought to start writing down those stories he’d told his family about his early years in China.

The result was “Colors of the Mountain,” published to immediate acclaim.

A New York Times best seller, it has been published in seven languages and, like his other books, taught at schools and universities.

“Despite the devastating circumstances of his childhood and adolescence, Chen recounts his coming of age with arresting simplicity,” Publishers Weekly said of the book. “Readers will cry along with this sad, funny boy who proves tough enough to make it, every step of the painful way.”

Other works include “Sounds of the River,” which recounted his leaving his poor south China town of Yellow Stone to attend college in Beijing.

In “Brothers: A Novel,” Chen turned to fiction in addressing the Cultural Revolution, this time with the tale of two brothers, one born into wealth as the son of a general, another into poverty as the son of the general’s mistress.

He also published several children’s books, including, “Wandering Warrior,” a fantasy story set in ancient China in which he said the 11-year-old protagonist was the kind of heroic young warrior he fantasized being.

His most recent work, “Girl Under a Red Moon,” casts his real-life sister Xi Xi as the heroine during China’s Cultural Revolution.

In addition to his wife, Chen is survived by a daughter, Victoria, a son, Michael, and four siblings.

Memorial services are pending.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Leaves Hospital After Losing Memory in Fall

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 05:30 PM PST

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from a hospital Tuesday after recovering from a fall at the presidential palace that affected his memory.

Bolsonaro, 64, had a quiet night and left the Armed Forces Hospital in Brasilia following about ten hours under observation, according to a statement from the presidency.

The president temporarily lost his memory after the fall but later recovered it, he said in a televised interview to Band TV on Tuesday.

“I didn’t know, for instance, what I had done during the day yesterday,” Bolsonaro said. “I fell on my back. I slipped forward and fell on my back. I lost my memory, but thank God, everything is in peace.”

The president was rushed to the hospital shortly after 9 p.m. local time on Monday after falling in the bathroom of the presidential palace. No lesions were found during a brain scan and doctors recommended he rest at home following his release, according to the presidency.

Bolsonaro was elected last year. He has been hospitalized several times since being stabbed on the campaign trail in September 2018, mostly related to the attack. Doctors ruled out skin cancer after Bolsonaro underwent a dermatological medical evaluation earlier this month.

President Trump Says North Korea May Be Planning a Nice ‘Christmas Gift’

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 03:51 PM PST

PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may be planning to give him “a nice present” such as a “beautiful vase” for Christmas rather than a missile launch.

The president was asked what he will do if North Korea does conduct a long-range missile test.

The North has threatened to take unspecified action if sanctions are not eased by the end of the year, and speculation has centered on the possibility of a new missile test, possibly of an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead.

The North has said that its “Christmas gift” to the United States will depend on Washington’s actions.

Trump, who is in Florida for the holidays, had just finished thanking service members from each branch of the military via satellite when he was asked about North Korea. He opted for a wait-and-see approach.

“Maybe it’s a present where he sends me a beautiful vase as opposed to a missile test,” Trump said. “I may get a nice present from him. You don’t know. You never know.”

Nuclear talks between the U.S. and North Korea have been stalled since a February summit between Trump and Kim fell apart.

A new satellite image of a factory where North Korea makes military equipment used to launch long-range missiles shows the construction of a new structure.

In New York, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric was asked whether Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had a message for Kim John Un on Christmas Eve regarding a “Christmas gift.”

“Our message is to the leadership of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to work for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and to resume working‑level talks with the United States. Diplomatic engagement is the only pathway to sustainable peace and complete denuclearization and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” Dujarric said.

35 Civilians, 80 Jihadists Killed in Attack in Burkina Faso

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 02:49 PM PST

(OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso) — Jihadists attacked a town in northern Burkina Faso and killed 35 civilians, most of them women, and ensuing clashes with security forces left 80 jihadists dead, President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré announced late Tuesday.

The violence, which erupted in the town of Arbinda in Sahel region near the country’s border with Mali, also killed seven members of the security forces who responded.

Jihadist attacks are frequent in the area but the provisional toll released Tuesday evening was unprecedented.

“The heroic action of our soldiers has made it possible to neutralize 80 terrorists,” the president said. “This barbaric attack resulted in the death of 35 civilians, most of them women.”

Hong Kong Police Arrest and Tear Gas Protesters on Christmas Eve

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 11:31 AM PST

(HONG KONG) — Clashes resumed in Hong Kong on Tuesday between police and anti-government protesters, some of them donned Santa Claus hats, as the more than six-month-long demonstrations look set to move into the new year.

Black-clad protesters smashed shop windows, while police responded with tear gas and the arrest of a still indeterminate number of demonstrators.

The protests demanding greater democratic rights show no sign of ending despite the overwhelming victory by anti-establishment candidates in elections for district representatives earlier this month.

Sunday’s protests were focused on the city’s mainly working class Mong Kok district. In response, police ran down suspected protesters in shopping malls and on subway trains.

In New Scandal, South Korean ‘Nut Rage’ Heiress Releases Letter Criticizing Management of Family Business

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 06:45 AM PST

The South Korean business dynasty that gained notoriety with the “nut-rage incident” is generating turbulence again.

Cho Hyun-ah, or Heather Cho, the eldest daughter of the founding family’s late patriarch, voiced her discontent over how her brother has been running the Hanjin conglomerate, whose units include flag carrier Korean Air Lines Co.

Walter Cho, the 43-year-old chairman of Hanjin Group and holding company Hanjin Kal Corp., has been running the companies without adequately consulting the rest of the family, violating their father’s wishes, she said in an emailed statement made through her lawyers.

It’s the first time that any member of the founding family publicly voiced discontent over the management of Hanjin since the patriarch, Cho Yang-ho, died in April. In November, the siblings inherited their father’s stake in Hanjin Kal in accordance with the law.

“Hanjin Group is being managed in a way that goes against the previous chairman’s wishes,” Heather Cho said in the statement. “There haven’t been sufficient discussions about who to name as the head of the Hanjin Group. I will listen to various views of shareholders.”

Walter Cho wasn’t immediately reachable but the group issued a public apology for the family controversy.

Hanjin Kal, which owns shares in Korean Air and other Hanjin units, rose 20% in Seoul trading, the most since April. Korean Air advanced 4.7% and Jin Air, another Hanjin Kal holding, climbed 4.1%.

Walter Cho owns 6.52% of Hanjin Kal and the older sister has 6.49%, according to a November filing. Emily Cho, the youngest in the family, has 6.47% and their mother 5.31%.

Heather Cho, 45, gained global notoriety after she ordered a Korean Air plane to return to the gate after scolding a flight attendant for the way macadamia nuts were served in premium class. As a result of the December 2014 incident, she was convicted for usurping a pilot’s authority and spent five months in prison.

Animal spirits say acche din aren't too far away for the economy

Posted:

By Anirban NagIndia's economy showed nascent signs it may be turning a corner after six straight months of anemic activity. Two of the eight high-frequency indicators compiled by Bloomberg News came in stronger in November based on a three-month weighted average reading, although that wasn't enough to move the needle on a gauge measuring overall activity. The dashboard measures "animal spirits," a term coined by British economist John Maynard Keynes to refer to investors' confidence in taking action. 72955805 Despite the green shoots, the economy is set for another quarter of sub-par growth, and still in need of support from the government and the central bank heading into 2020. The focus will now turn to the government's annual budget due Feb. 1, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman saying she's working toward improving consumption. Here are the details of the dashboard:Business ActivityThe dominant services index rebounded last month, driven by higher orders and strengthening business confidence. The IHS Markit India Services Purchasing Managers' Index rose to a four-month high of 52.7 in November, the first time in three months that the reading has been above the 50 mark, which indicates expansion. The index is still below its long-run average of 54.2.The manufacturing sector activity also improved in November, resulting in the composite PMI index jumping to 52.7 from 49.6. 72955826 The surveys showed input cost inflation for the services sector quickened to a 13-month high, while manufacturing input prices rose marginally.Export SlumpExports struggled, although the 0.3% contraction in November from a year ago was shallower than the 1.1% drop seen in October. The decline was driven by a dip in gems and jewelry shipments.Lacking VigorMore worryingly, non-oil, non-gold imports continued to contract, led by lower imports of transport equipment and electronic goods. Capital goods imports contracted sharply by 21.8% in November compared with a 6.1% fall in October -- the sixth consecutive month of declines led by weakness in the capex cycle, according to economists at IDFC Ltd.Consumer ActivityConsumer confidence dropped to its lowest level since at least 2014, affecting demand across the economy. Passenger car sales posted the 13th consecutive month of declines in November, with purchases of two-wheelers -- an indicator for demand in smaller towns and rural areas -- falling 14.3% from a year ago. Sales of trucks and buses were down 15%, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The slump in demand is due in part to a prolonged crisis in the shadow-banking sector, which has led to tighter lending and hurt domestic consumption -- the backbone of the economy.Financial conditions, as measured by the Citi India Financial Conditions Index, improved during the month, but that didn't make a huge difference to loan demand with year-on-year growth slowing to a two-year low, according to data from RBI. 72956042 Industrial ActivityIndustrial output contracted 3.8% in October, the third straight month of decline. The deterioration has been most marked for segments more dependent on funding -- capital goods, consumer durables and infrastructure and construction. The index of eight core infrastructure industries, which feeds into the index of industrial production, declined 5.8% in October from a year ago -- its steepest drop in at least 14 years -- dragged down by a sharp contraction in electricity production. Both the core sector and industrial output numbers are reported with a one-month lag.

MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India has given Indian consumers a new option to make their daily payments at local shops and retail outlets for the purchase of daily household goods and services. In a bid to give increased impetus to small ticket digital payments RBI on Tuesday has introduced a new Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) which will come with a monthly rechargeble limit of Rs 10000 and can be used only for making retail payments. "To give impetus to small value digital payments and for enhanced user experience, it has been decided to introduce a new type of semi-closed PPI..." the central bank announced in press release on Tuesday. "These PPIs shall be used only for purchase of goods and services and not for funds transfer."The newly introduced payment instrument can be issued by banks and existing non bank PPI players. These companies would be able to verify credentials of customers seeking to open their PPI accounts using an OTP sent to user's verified mobile number and a digital identification document recognized by the Department of Revenue, the banking regulator said. "The minimum details shall necessarily include a mobile number verified with One Time Pin (OTP) and a self-declaration of name and unique identity/ identification number of any 'mandatory document' or 'officially valid document' (OVD) listed in the 'Master Direction - Know Your Customer (KYC) Direction," according to the central bank. This will come as a boost especially for wallet companies such as Paytm and Phonepe that have reeled due to high costs of KYC compliance since the Supreme Court denied them permission to access Aadhar database to complete full KYC authentication. The PPI can be used for a monthly limit of Rs. 10000 and the amount can only be uploaded only from bank account linked with customer's verified mobile number. Furthermore, RBI has also fixed an annual limit of Rs 1.2 lakh that can be recharged on these accounts. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das had spoken about the possible launch of such an instrument while making his Monetary Policy speech on December 5. The governor had emphasised on the need for a seamless, easy to issue payment instrument to increase the use of digital payments at small merchant locations where typically the failure rate of transactions are known to be high.

Can CAA-NRC answer unresolved questions?

Posted:

Are we in the middle of India's second freedom struggle, without realising it, much as Dr Johnson's friend spoke prose without realising it? These nationwide protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) force millions, who have been indifferent to politics, disdain for politicians apart, to squarely confront unresolved question relating to identity, citizenship, individual and group rights, including gender rights, and their role in creating substantive democracy. At the first instance, the protests are against the government and its BJP-Sangh Parivar leadership. However, at a deeper level, these protests challenge Indian society's collective prejudices that divide people in terms of religion, caste, language and region, and deny women equal rights.Democracy Calls for…We love to hail our freedom from the British. And imagine that the departure of the British also meant our transition to democracy. True, we gave ourselves a Constitution that offers everyone equality, liberty, rights of conscience, speech, profession and mobility, besides an opportunity to elect our leaders every five years, every adult possessing the right to vote.Europe convulsed itself in multiple revolutions to secure universal adult franchise, and women had to wait till the 20th century to figure in that voting universe. Americans had their revolution, preceded by a tea party, to secure for themselves the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. With reference to the highly unequal distribution of power in society as it existed in India at the time of Independence, the Constitution was, and remains, a radical, revolutionary programme of reform and progress.Any political party that focuses on transforming Indian society to align it with the values and norms upheld by the Constitution would be a revolutionary force. The Constitution prescribes gender equality. If gender equality is realised and women have the freedom to choose their partners, many would marry outside their caste and corrode the caste system. The Constitution urges equality and non-discrimination, both inimical to the institution of caste and to discrimination on the basis of religion. It promotes a scientific temper, even as it protects the freedom to practice and propagate one's religion of choice. In other words, the Constitution seeks to overhaul traditional India's value system and overturn the caste system's iniquitous hierarchy of social, cultural and economic power.Nehru was alive to the need to move society, far removed from the democratic ideal, towards the Constitutional goal. The vision of social reform dissipated from the political class, over time, as leaders pursued votes, offered patronage to and sought patronage from the status quo, so much so that Narasimha Rao, Rajiv Gandhi's home minister, famously declared, in the wake of the Shah Bano controversy, that if Muslims wanted to rot in the gutter, denying their women the democratic rights the Constitution proffers and the court had enforced, he was no one to dig them out.…Addressing Social SchismDuring the freedom struggle, nationalism was the rallying cry. This allowed leaders to paper over society's divisions in the struggle to throw the British out. Gandhi's support for Khilafat, opposition to British defenestration of the Ottomans, brought Muslims to the freedom movement, all right, but fed pan-Islamism. For much of his life, Gandhi defended the Varna system, even as he fought untouchability. This led to his lasting differences with Ambedkar. When Kashibai Kanitkar, one of the earliest women writers in Marathi, wrote and published her first article, Bal Gangadhar Tilak's newspaper Kesri offered the material her patriarchal critics needed to haul her over the coals for daring to learn to read and write, and, thereby, commit "treason against men".The Hindu Mahasabha, the Muslim League and the Communists — in the freedom movement, they were not the marginal presence they are today — offered competing and different visions for Indian society after Independence. But the vision of the Congress mainstream, led by Gandhi, prevailed, despite or, perhaps, because of, its prevarications on how to resolve society's internal divisions. But now, the Sangh Parivar's effort to redefine Indian nationhood as Hindutva has created a popular upsurge.Yes, there are the recognisable political leaders amongst the protesters, intellectuals, artistes, actors and social activists. But the most emphatic presence is of young people unattached to anything or anyone, apart from an idea of India as a secular, democratic place where people of all faiths have an equal right to a place under the sun, that equality recognising no boundaries of faith, caste, language or gender. These youngsters, in effect, ask who we are, amidst the shimmering, diffracting, melding hues and shades that constitute 'us', and about the meaning of construing a 'them' amongst us, even as an ill-remembered past, of division of the popular imagination that culminated in the Partition, struggles to mouth a warning against repeating that tragedy. Their passionate protest in defence of unity negotiates social difference to enrich democracy.

Digi-first brands took just 3 years to hit Rs 100 cr

BENGALURU: Digital-first brands such as BoAt, WoW Skin Sciences, MamaEarth and LifeLong have hit Rs 100 crore in revenue run rate within 24-36 months of launch, a milestone that used to take at least five years earlier, investors said. The brands – in the personal care, FMCG, electronics and appliances sectors – achieved traction quickly as ecommerce companies including Amazon and BigBasket have put in place exclusive programmes to launch and test brands, and rising consumer intent to purchase differentiated products online, according to founders.Additionally, the rising prevalence of content marketing-driven sales, through social media apps like TikTok, Whatsapp and Instagram, to promote brands has also pushed these digital-first brands to gain ground, the founders said."These niche brands are also taking wallet share from some traditional FMCG companies in certain categories," said Hari Menon, founder of BigBasket. 72962643 In the past two years, venture capitalists have invested more than $300 million in 70 such consumer brands, data from industry tracker Tracxn show. For instance, when Kanwaljeet Singh founded Fireside Ventures, an early-stage internet brands-focused fund, his thesis to bet on brands was simple — he expected internet brands that he backed with a ?15 crore cheque to hit Rs 100 crore in revenue in 3-4 years, be valued at Rs 500 crore, and make a 5X return on a 20% stake."Now, we are saying in a fund's lifetime, we are seeing the potential for brands build Rs 500 crore revenue business," Singh said. "From our own portfolio, MamaEarth, BoAt, Vahdam Teas, among many others, have either already hit that mark or (are) very close."MamaEarth is in talks to raise $10 million led by Sequoia Capital, sources said.Matrix Partners, a venture capital firm most associated with investments in technology startups such as Ola, Practo and Quikr, has racked up almost ten investments in earlystage consumer brands in the past 12 months. The firm says this is the right time to invest in the sector, which could add $1trillion in market capitalisation over the next decade. Its latest bet in the space, Mosaic Wellness, has been its most aggressive. The fund, along with Sequoia Capital and SAIF Partners, has backed two prominent venture capitalists operating in stealth mode and building a slew of digital-first consumer brands in a $10 million maiden funding round earlier this year."India's favourable demographics will act as a key tailwind for consumer businesses. India has a large portion of the young working segment with rapidly increasing purchasing power and an increased taste for premium products," said Revant Bhate, cofounder and CEO of Mosaic Wellness.Fireside has evaluated over 1,500 investment opportunities in the space over the past two years. This indicates that entrepreneurs, too, have realized that there is space in the market and have begun building ventures to fill the gap, leveraging not just online selling but also marketing online."The growth of the new-age brands in the past few years has been largely fueled by the rapid growth of the digital universe, both as a medium of brand engagement as well as for consumer access. The millennial consumers are very digitally connected, they are highly aware of global trends and very experimentative," Singh said.

Santa pause: Festive business feels heat of CAA protests

NEW DELHI: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year? Hoteliers, restaurants, resorts and clubs are praying it turns out that way, but thanks to party spirits dimmed by protests on the citizenship issue, those in the business of hosting festivities are not so sure."Street violence in Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata combined with prohibitive orders imposed by the state in many other cities are having a direct impact on eating out and partying. It is also perhaps hurting inbound foreign tourists, who are big spenders," National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) president Anurag Katriar said. The dineout industry was in any case coping with a very tough year on account of steep taxes and overall worsening of consumer sentiment. In November 2017, the government slashed GST rates on restaurants to 5% from 18%, but scrapped input tax credit that the industry said escalated capital expenses and rentals by 15-18%.Hoteliers got some good news on the tax front – GST rate dropped from 28% to 18% for luxury hotels. But they hadn't foreseen the disruptive effects of protests on what is typically the best sales period for them.Hotelier Raj Chopra, owner of the JW Marriott in Mussoorie, said he is expecting hotels in metros like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, cities that witnessed widespread protests last week, to see subdued demand for New Year celebrations. "The tempo across the industry does not look as promising. I don't think hotels in metros will get the business they are expecting," said Chopra, who has two Marriott hotel properties coming up in Goa next.Marriott and IHCL did not respond to emails seeking comments till the time of going to press. Accor declined to comment.Kylin Group managing director Saurabh Khanijo said: "So far there have been no queries for New Year, forget the bookings. I don't think people are feeling secure enough to go out." 72962449 Ankur Bhatia, executive director of Bird Group, which owns the luxury hospitality brand Roseate Hotels & Resorts that has two operating hotels in Delhi and one in Rishikesh, said Christmas celebrations look muted already and the chain is witnessing cancellations. "While we are trying to reassure guests and are saying there shouldn't be any issues, a lot of guests are cancelling and those especially travelling from abroad are thinking twice. The international media has also been highlighting these issues. We are seeing a slowdown in demand."Some other businesses said they are staying optimistic for the time being. "We are going ahead with all preparations. We have had some bookings but typically the New Year bookings pick up after Christmas," said Delhi's Le Meridien Hotel chief operating officer Tarun Thakral."All hopes for our sector are pinned around this festive period but this time because of the fear of going out specially in cities like Kolkata where we have significant presence, we are seeing the impact of the protests. Hopefully, things should settle down and spending will increase in the next few days," Speciality Restaurants managing director Anjan Chatterjee said. The listed chain operates 135 outlets across multiple brands including Mainland China and Oh! Calcutta.Sanjay Sethi, chief executive of Chalet Hotels, which has five operating hotels located in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru including the Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel and the Westin Hyderabad Mindspace, said his chain hasn't been impacted so far. "I think people on both sides will (see) reason and the issue will be sorted."Srijan Vadhera, general manager at Conrad Bengaluru, said his chain has seen a healthy number of enquiries and reservations for the New Year. Everyone in the festivity business is hoping that turns out to be true for them as well.

Bharat shoots its Citizenship Act take on TikTok

TikTok, a short-video app popular among lip-syncing teenagers and young adults in small towns, is being used to register their protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act In fact, videos of protests overlapped with patriotic songs, poetry calling for unity among Indians, graphics explaining the repercussions of the Act and the yet-to-be commissioned National Register of Citizens (NRC), have received millions of views. There are also videos of people supporting the policy, arguing that the protests are a result of misinformation.TikTok users posting these protest videos were not so long ago shooting videos of themselves dancing, cracking jokes and playing pranks. Its young and semi-urban user base is in stark contrast to the one found on Twitter and Instagram, which is a platform of choice for urban intellectuals, activists, the media and lawyers."Just as city dwellers discovered social clout on Facebook, it is now the tier 2 to tier 5 residents discovering social clout on Tik-Tok for the first time. They are discovering that their opinions matter and they are willing to express themselves," said Karthik Srinivasan, an independent communications consultant and former national lead, social, at Ogilvy.Facebook, which was used during anti-government protests during the 'Nirbhaya' incident and the anti-corruption movement, has now been relegated in terms of user expression, he added.Hashtag #NRC got 76.2 million views, #noNRC 35.7 million views, #boycottNRC 10.6 million views and #rejectNRC got 6.3 million views, according to data available on TikTok. Similarly, #CAA got 25.2 million views and #noCAA got 11.9 million views. Hashtags in support of the law, such as #isupportnrc got 189,000 views and #i_support-_cab_nrc received 29,400 views. There were dozens of similar supporting and protesting hashtags on TikTok.72962519 TikTok, owned by China-based technology startup ByteDance, has tried hard to remain apolitical globally to avoid angering governments. An email query sent to TikTok remained unanswered.TikTok has about 200 million registered users in India, of which 120 million are active every month. Facebook and Twitter do not disclose user base numbers for India specifically, but statistics portal Statista puts Facebook's active users in the country at 269 million and Twitter's at 7.91 million, as of October. In a bid to stay away from divisive political content, TikTok banned political advertising globally, saying they do not fit in with the experience the app aims to offer.TikTok has stressed that it wants to be known as a place for creative expression, and one that creates a "positive, refreshing environment".In the last one year, TikTok has successfully diversified its content library to include educational videos on English speaking, cooking, fitness and healthcare.

Nifty negates higher highs, lows; likely to see more consolidation

NEW DELHI: Nifty50 saw fag-end selling on Tuesday, but the index managed to protect the immediate support at 12,200 level. The index formed lower highs and lows for the second session, after negating the formation of higher highs and lows of the previous seven days. More consolidation is likely, analysts said. The bears step on the accelerator whenever the index approached a cluster of resistances between 12,280 and 12,300 levels, said Aditya Agarwala of YES Securities."Nifty has been making lower lows for past three sessions, confirming the weakening strength in the uptrend. Multiple negative divergences on RSI suggest minor correction may be on the cards," he said.Chandan Taparia of Motilal Oswal Securities said while the index has formed a bearish candle on the daily scale, the market breadth was in favour of the advancing counters, which is a sign of relief for the bulls."Overall, the medium-term trend is still intact to positive. The index needs to hold above the 12,158 level to witness an up-move towards the 12,300 level," Taparia said. A major downside support for the index exists at 12,000 level, he said. The index closed at 12,212 for the day, down 50.75 points or 0.41 per cent. Fag-end selling dragged the index towards the junction of the 40-hour exponential moving average and the hourly lower Bollinger Band, said Gaurav Ratnaparkhi of Sharekhan."The two in combination acted as a good support on Monday and the same is expected going ahead. Also, the hourly chart shows that Nifty has reached the lower end of a sideways channel that can offer additional support. Thus, the 12,210-12,200 range becomes a key support zone from a near-term perspective. A leap from this support zone can push the benchmark index towards the short-term target of 12,350," said Ratnaparkhi.

YES Bank’s Ravneet Gill on what keeps him going & fundraising

Posted:

The runway for growth for private sector banks is huge, says Ravneet Gill, MD & CEO, YES Bank. Excerpts from a chat with Abha Bakaya of ETNOW as part of a panel discussion at the Times Network's India Economic Conclave.Where do you find motivation, given the situation? You are living on a razor's edge on a day-to-day basis. Where do you find the strength to keep going given that you have entered this situation and it is not something of your own creation? It comes out of the conviction I have in the future of the bank. It is a fantastic platform, countrywide presence, big brand, people who are second to none, great technology, great product innovation, very good client connectivity and I think if you take those for granted, then the troubles also you should take for granted. So if I look at it in balance, I feel absolutely super convinced about the future of the institution and that is where I derive my motivation from.We have been asking all the big bankers from SBI to Axis to Kotak if they are looking to acquire YES Bank or a part of YES Bank, Is there anything we need to know?May be something that I need to know because I can see a lot of idle speculation. Every media house wrote to me asking, if there was any truth to these rumours. I will just say this is idle speculation and nothing else. What is the worst and best case scenario? If you do manage to raise funds by the end of the year or whenever is the next deadline, what happens next? How do you see the road to recovery? Also, if you do not raise funds then, what happens? Is it the end of the road? No. If you see the last three quarters, we have indicated the ability to be able to accrete capital organically. We have been able to down sell our assets and generate capital from that. We have shown that we are very good test players as well. We take the singles and keep things going. So I do not see the end of the road. First and foremost, the possibility that the capital does not come in is something I do not believe in. If you had to invest in financial services anywhere in the world, give me one opportunity which is more attractive than the private sector banking space within India. Out of all the large economies, this is the most under-penetrated from the credit standpoint. With the dislocation that has happened in the NBFC sector and with the public sector banks having their set of challenges, the runway for growth for private sector banks is huge. The only way I look at is that as soon as capital comes in, not only is the runway for growth tremendous, but also in this environment, we will be able to pick and choose our spots where we want to grow. It will be very calibrated growth. There is no question of throwing caution to the winds and growing indiscriminately but the opportunity is huge. Just as we see that opportunity, so do investors. It is a question of time before we have capital.

Vexing questions over personal data protection bill hang over tech firms

Posted:

MUMBAI: Technology companies, including Microsoft and Cisco, have sought clarity on the technical challenges of data localisation, stipulated in the Personal Data Protection Bill, which is being examined by a joint parliamentary committee. The conditions on how data is to be classified have been clearly defined, but further information is needed on the technical specifications or gateways at which this classification will take place, said Vishak Raman, director, security business, Cisco India and SAARC."Where the Bill needs to add more clarity is the technical controls – you classify the data, but how do you do it? You do it at a proxy (level), at the firewall, at your Cloud or during file submission, at the DNS security or at email security?" Raman pointed out."The government is doing a fantastic job of classification, but how do you control it and how do you report a breach? The government has the knowledge and technical capability to classify it, we just need to add little bit of technical control points so that the law is well interpreted and implemented," he added.Technology companies represented by industry lobby groups had earlier flagged concerns, including how the Bill enabled the government to direct data fiduciaries or data processors to share anonymised data or non-personal data with it.The purpose of the shared data is to facilitate targeted delivery of services and for policy formulation, according to the Bill.Technology companies are seeking further clarity on what processes should be in place when the government requires access to non-personal customer data, said Rohini Srivathsa, National Technology Officer and Strategy Lead, Microsoft India. The company itself is seeking to clarify the conditions and safeguards under which data would be localised, she said."We, as part of industry forums, have given not just our view, but what is right for the country, because we can say as much as we want that the data is in a data centre, but if you have not thought about cybersecurity, it doesn't matter," she said. Industry has also raised concerns over data localisation and around the competitiveness of Indian businesses, Srivathsa said. "What about startups from India who want to access the global market? Let's say there is a fintech company that wants to provide services in Europe. The way consumer experience now is, even a few nanoseconds of delay or latency in an app – and people don't use it."

Foreign tourists shun India amid protests and crime
NEW DELHI: A slew of incidents targeting women, protests over the new citizenship law and subsequent travel advisories issued by the likes of the US, UK and Russia, and a recent move to phase out airport passes for tour operators are likely to affect inbound tourism in the peak travel season, tour operators and travel agents said.Tour operators catering to overseas tourists from the US and UK said their clients were increasingly enquiring about safety and security in the country in the wake of these developments."The numbers in this season will be definitely impacted. Those who have already booked and paid for December are coming but those who were considering have changed their mind," said R Parthiban, a director of Delhi-based Swagatam Tours that caters to travellers from Italy, France and North America."Nobody will go to a place where there is uncertainty. It has been two years since tourist offices in key (foreign) markets have been closed down by the government and no alternatives were provided," Parthiban said."To counter these advisories and the perceptions, the government needs to adopt a more proactive approach and needs to communicate. Tourists are concerned and I feel that image of India in minds of travellers as a country that respects all religions is going away. Overseas tourists above the age of 50 look at India as a cultural destination and travel in sizeable numbers, and they cannot take risks," he said. The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) said it has written to ministries of tourism and civil aviation to postpone a move to phase out airport passes for tour operators, which it feels would be inconvenient for tourists."Tour operators get airport passes through which they go and receive foreign tourists when they disembark or drop them off when they leave," said IATO chief operating officer Rahul Chakravarty."Airport passes are going to be discontinued from December 31. If these are withdrawn, touts could misuse this against the tourists and this could also put the safety of woman travellers at risk. We are requesting the government to continue them till April (as December to February is the peak season) as we don't have time. This will become a very big operational issue," he added."The disturbances in India against the Citizenship Amendment Act have been in pockets but travel advisories from countries like the US, UK, Canada and Russia have created a negative perception about the entire country which may affect inbound tourism numbers," he added. The US and UK updated travel advisories for female travellers visiting India following recent incidents of crime against women. The two countries, besides others like Singapore, Israel, Canada and Russia, also updated their travel advisories following the protests in several cities over the new law.

KKR, Apax Partners in race to buy significant stake in CCD
MUMBAI: Private equity firms KKR and Apax Partners are the only ones left in the race for a significant stake in CafĂ© Coffee Day (CCD), as three others including Oyo have backed out after showing early interest, three people familiar with the matter said.KKR and Apax Partners are now conducting due diligence of the coffee chain, the people said.SoftBank-backed hospitality chain Oyo was interested only in the CCD brand which its owner Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd (CDEL) was unwilling to offer, while TPG Capital and Bain Capital opted out mainly due to differences over valuation, they said."After an analysis, the company (CDEL) had arrived at an amount that needs to be invested if CCD were to survive and thrive. That is quite a steep number and the investors (who opted out) are not willing to commit the requisite amount," said a person involved with the deal. ET on November 25 reported that Oyo and Apax had initiated talks with the CDEL board to buy the group's coffee business. On November 15, ET had reported about KKR, TPG and Bain Capital signing non-disclosure agreements with CDEL and initiating talks for the stake.CCD, a KKR spokesperson and an Apax representative declined to comment. Oyo said it had no comment to offer. Bain Capital refused to comment and TPG did not respond to ETs queries.72962105 Talks with Oyo collapsed after CCD refused to sell only the brand name as the hospitality company had sought, people in the know said."Some of the players were only interested in the CCD brand but hiving it off looks tough at this point. Not many investors are willing to take certain reputational risks," said one of the people. Some of the investors were also cautious about a forensic report that is awaited, the people said. The suitors will be conducting their own forensic due diligence for comfort, said one of them. For the deal, CDEL is expected to carve out the coffee business — cafĂ©s, coffee exports, estates and vending machines —that is housed under the Coffee Day Global Ltd subsidiary. The board is expected to speed up talks with interested investors once the investigation report by former Central Bureau of Investigation official Ashok Kumar Malhotra is submitted. He is looking into a letter that CCD founder VG Siddhartha purportedly wrote to the board on July 27, two days before he went missing. He was found dead on July 31.Following Siddhartha's death, the board has struggled to run operations amid unpaid dues. At the end of July, CDEL's debt was Rs 4,970 crore, which included that of listed group company Sical Logistics. The promoter shareholding has almost halved and is currently 25.35% but 80% of it is pledged with lenders. With 1,480 outlets nationally, CCD has the largest food and beverage network in the country, even after shutting 280 stores to improve profitability. The CDEL board had previously approached the Tata Group, which runs the Starbucks franchise in India, and the Jatia family, which operates the McDonald's chain in western and southern India, but both were not interested in taking the talks forward, said people aware of the earlier rounds of talks. The board had also reached out to ITC and Coca-Cola, which wanted the coffee business to be carved out into a separate entity before any potential deal. Neither ITC nor Coca-Cola — which runs Costa Coffee — has participated in the bidding.
