AMD Intros FX-4130 Quad-Core Chip, Reduces Desktop Chip Prices

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 07:27 PM PDT

A few days after a little-known e-tailer was found taking pre-orders for the FX-4130, chip maker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) on Monday officially added the budget quad-core processor to its FX chip family. Besides launching the FX-4130, the company has also slashed the prices of a dozen or so desktop chips.

The FX-4130 is a budget-friendly desktop chip with four 32nm Zambezi cores clocked at 3.8GHz(3.9GHz in turbo mode). The chip, which has a thermal design point (TDP) of 125 watts, carries a $112 price tag, having snatched it from the FX-4100, which has just had its price reduced to $101.

"The AMD FX-4130 processor, for enthusiasts who like their graphics (GPU) interchangeable and upgradeable, is a 4-core CPU that clocks slightly below a 4GHz operating frequency in a 125W thermal envelope. Suggested retail price for the part is a highly competitive $112," AMD said in a blog post Monday.

The FX-4100 is not the only chip to have had its price slashed. In all, the chip maker has reduced the prices of as many as seven A-Series "Llano" APUs and as many FX CPUs.

Mozilla Silences Updates in Firefox 15 Released Today

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 12:04 PM PDT

Mozilla took another page from Google Chrome when designing Firefox 15, which was released today. Like Chrome, the new version of Firefox features silent updates that are downloaded and installed in the background. Once installed, Firefox seamlessly and quickly switches to the new version the next time the end user exits and restarts his or her browser session.

"This was one of the scariest projects that I've ever worked on, since messing something up in the updater component could have catastrophic consequences in case it prevents users from being able to update to newer Firefox revisions. I'm happy that the results of this project will soon get in the hands of millions of Firefox users," Mozilla developer Ehsan Akhgari wrote in a blog post.

Other features included in Firefox 15 are several built-in development tools, WebGL enhancements (including compressed textures for better performance), and of course the usual assortment of bug fixes. Mozilla said it also made more optimizations to memory usage for add-ons, further chasing a cure for the common memory leak issues that have plagued some users.

Leaked Memo Confirms T-Mobile Still Won't Run with iPhone Crowd

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 11:32 AM PDT

T-Mobile has never been invited to the iPhone party, and that's probably not going to change when Apple unveils the iPhone 5 next month. Instead, an internal company memo leaked to the Web suggests T-Mobile is working on a strategy for "Selling Against the iPhone," which would be an awfully awkward thing to train its employees to do if, in fact, the wireless carrier was receiving iPhone devices.

The leaked memo is one of two that fell into TMoNew's hands, providing more speculatory fodder that an iPhone 5 launch event is imminent (Apple hasn't officially announced plans to unveil its next generation smartphone next month, but piles of rumors and leaked info have all but confirmed it will).

While T-Mobile doesn't look to be joining the iPhone party, it will offer party favors in the form of Monthly4G SIM and Monthly 4G Micro SIM kits that are compatible with the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Adding a layer of intrigue to all this is the uncertainty surrounding future sales of certain Samsung devices. Samsung ships more Android smartphones than any other vendor, but after losing a critical case to Apple and being found guilty of patent infringement, several of the company's devices could end up banned for sale in the U.S. Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T all are able to fall back on iPhone sales if that happens, but T-Mobile obviously can't.

CyberPower Pokes Head into Ultrabook Arena with Customizable Zeus-M Series

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 09:27 AM PDT

Boutique system builder CyberPower PC is looking to put the pressure on Ultrabook vendors with a sleek and sexy looking model of its own. Unlike many Ultrabooks, however, CyberPower says its new Zeus-M and Zeus-M2 thin and light machines are a little more customizable in that you can configure additional RAM and solid state drive (SSD) storage without selecting a whole new baseline system.

The Zeus-M starts at $699 and features a 14.1-inch 1366x768 display, Intel Core i5 3317U processor, 8GB of DDR3-1333 memory, 60GB SATA III SSD, 802.11n Wi-Fi, 1.3MP webcam, HDMI output, multi-gesture touchpad, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

CyberPower's Zeus-M2 is the same Ultrabook, only spec'd a little better. It starts at $799 and offers twice as much RAM (16GB) and double the amount of storage (120GB). That's not a bad way to spend an additional $100.

Regardless of configuration, both systems measure under an inch thick and weigh less than four pounds, CyberPower says. They're available to order now with an estimated ship date of September 11, 2012.

NASA to Send Android Smartphone Powered Nano-Satellites into Space

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 08:42 AM PDT

The Curiosity rover on Mars isn't the only thing NASA is busy with these days. According to reports, NASA is getting ready to send a pair of cube-shaped nano-satellites weighing just over 2 pounds into space, but just as interesting as the size and weight is the fact that they're powered by Android smartphones. It's part of a nifty project called PhoneSat overseen by the agency's Small Spacecraft Technology program.

HTC's Nexus One (PhoneSat 1.0) and Samsung's Nexus S (PhoneSat 2.0) are the two lucky Android devices making the trip to space, InformationWeek reports. Size and costs are the two main benefits to using Android smartphones. The PhoneSat 1.0, which will take pictures and record its position in space, consists of the Nexus One phone, batteries, radio beacon, and a watchdog circuit that add up to around $3,500. NASA's PhoneSat 2.0 adds solar panels and a GPS receiver, so it costs a little more, but overall NASA is looking at spending about $50,000 for the launch, compared to hundreds of millions of dollars for a typical satellite.

The first Android-powered satellite is expected to launch by the end of the year on the Orbital Sciences Corporation's Antares rocket, Forbes reports. If the launch is successful, PhoneSat 2.0 will follow suit.

Apple Readies Invasion of 7-inch Tablet Market with iPad Mini, Reports Say

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 06:58 AM PDT

Rumor has it the iPad Mini -- a smaller, 7.85-inch version of the iPad tablet  -- is real and nearly ready to ship. It's the type of device the late Steve Jobs never approved of, having once unaffectionately referred to 7-inch tablets as "tweeners," and slides into a trending category of mobile products currently led by Amazon's Kindle Fire, Google's Nexus 7, and Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet (not necessarily in that order).

Reports of an iPad Mini tablet have slowly crawled through cyberspace, and the most recent news comes from Macotakara, a Japanese tech site that claims to have confirmation on the "iPad Mini" name. In addition to what it claims is the official name for Apple's tweener device, Macotakara also reports some type of hole next to the iSight camera, which is similar to the Wi-Fi antenna on the third generation iPod touch.

Other than the name and size, not a whole lot is known about the iPad Mini, though that's reportedly about to change. According to All Things D, Apple will unveil the iPad Mini sometime in October, around a month after the iPhone 5's launch event.

Maingear's Solo 21 All-in-One PC Receives a Facelift and New Hardware

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 06:28 AM PDT

In less than a month, Microsoft will release its next generation operating system, Windows 8, to the general public, and we suspect OEMs will take advantage of the touch-friendly interface by introducing new all-in-one (AIO) desktop models. Getting a head start is boutique system builder Maingear, which today announced a redesigned version of its Solo 21 AIO with a fresh new look and upgraded internals.

On the outside, Maingear says the Solo 21 now features "clean lines" and an "attractive silhouette" that will feel right at home in any room, whether it's in the living room serving as a media hub or on the kitchen counter dishing up recipes and shopping lists with its 21-inch Full HD 1080p display.

Inside and around the Solo 21 are upgraded parts and features built around Intel's 3rd Generation Core platform (Ivy Bridge). It's customizable and upgradeable, even the motherboard, which Maingear says is a first in the industry.

Pricing starts at $949 for a default configuration built on top of Intel's last generation Core i3 2125 processor (Sandy Bridge); It takes a $237 additional investment to step up to an Ivy Bridge CPU (Core i7 3770s). The rest of the baseline configuration consists of 4GB of DDR3-1333 memory (upgradeable to 16GB DDR3-1600), 500GB Seagate 7200 RPM hard drive (larger size HDD and SDD options available, along with mSATA SSDs), 8X DVD burner (Blu-ray burner optional), multi-memory card reader, 1.3MP webcam, GbE LAN, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

The redesigned Solo 21 is available now.

IBM zEnterprise EC12 Mainframe is Culmination of $1 Billion in R&D

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 05:55 AM PDT

IBM's newest mainframe server, the zEnterprise EC12, is purportedly the most powerful and technologically advanced enterprise system Big Blue has ever assembled. It sports the world's fastest processor, a six-core 32nm part running at 5.5GHz, that offers 25 percent more performance per core than the 45nm quad-core chip used in the previous generation zEnterprise 196. According to IBM, zEC12 is the result of an investment of more than $1 billion in research and development.

The zEC12 supports up to 120 cores, offers 50 percent more total capacity than its predecessor, and boasts ironclad security. It's the only commercial server to achieve Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 5+ security classification, part of which is due to the inclusion of a state-of-the-art, tamper-resistant cryptographic co-processor called Crypto Express4S.

IBM equipped zEC12 with 3TB of system memory, along with a new type of memory called Flash Express designed to improve performance of data intensive applications.

"We continue to drive innovation on System z, allowing a broader set of clients to apply its leadership capabilities in security and resiliency to the current demands of their business, be they from analytics, cloud or mobile computing," said Doug Balog, general manager IBM System z. "Our end-to-end design approach for smarter computing -- from processors to systems to software optimization -- is targeted to handle complicated business challenges associated with managing, protecting and analyzing a client's most critical information. It's what makes the mainframe the ultimate enterprise system."

The zEC12 will be available to commercial customers starting December 31.

Hyperspace Beacon: All SWTOR classes are useful in Huttball, part two

Hyperspace Beacon All SWTOR classes are useful in Huttball part 2
A few weeks ago, after many weeks of seeing new players in Star Wars: The Old Republic warzones, I thought it would be a good idea to post a little guide on the basics of winning Huttball. Interestingly, that article birthed a conversation about how some classes were better suited for the game, but more importantly, some players had given up on the warzone because they felt that their particular class didn't work in Huttball at all.

Admittedly, certain classes do have more utilities that make them a better fit for the game, but I believe every class has its role in this particular arena. And more importantly, I believe that every class can have fun and feel useful. However, some players need a bit of training.

Two weeks ago, I covered the Sith Warrior, Jedi Knight, Imperial Agent, and Smuggler classes. In this week's coverage, I'm going to take a look at two SWTOR classes that seems to be built for this game and two others that have more surprises than you might think: the Sith Inquisitor, Jedi Consular, Republic Trooper, and Bounty Hunter.

Guild Wars 2 hits 400k concurrent users before launch
If you were enjoying Guild Wars 2 during the headstart weekend, you weren't alone. In fact, chances are 400,000 others were doing the same thing at the same time. Although Guild Wars 2 only officially launched in the wee hours of this morning, the game has already hosted 400,000 users online concurrently. At the same time. Yes.

ArenaNet and NCsoft have also announced that over one million copies of the game were pre-sold, not counting the one-day pre-orders. Of course, that number will rise as folks purchase the game now that it has launched.

President and co-founder of ArenaNet Mike O'Brien stated, "This is the culmination of a five-year journey and to be greeted by this level of enthusiasm by our fans is truly amazing. But really our work is just beginning. Now our focus is shifting to building on this living world we've delivered, continuously refining our game and improving services to ensure our players have the best possible experience."

The Secret World sales at 200,000; Funcom focused on the future

          Screenshot -- The Secret World
Funcom's latest entry into the MMO field, The Secret World, has been receiving some less-than-stellar publicity lately with a bit of news involving poor Metacritic scores and layoffs (albeit temporary) at Funcom. It doesn't look like things are changing much yet, unfortunately. TSWSociety.com reports that, in a financial document released today, Funcom is claiming sales of "over 200,000" for the horror-themed title. These sales are reported as being "below expectations" and resulted in an impairment charge of $35,000 US.

In the report, Funcom also cites Guild Wars 2's launch date announcement, followed immediately by that of World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, as reasons for The Secret World's subpar performance. But regardless of these setbacks, Funcom is looking ahead according to the company's Director of Communications, Erling Ellingsen, who says that "[Funcom's] focus is now to readjust, roll up our sleeves and focus on the future." Hopefully dark days are not, in fact, coming.

The Soapbox: Give MMOs a chance

The Soapbox Give MMOs a chance
Disclaimer: The Soapbox column is entirely the opinion of this week's writer and does not necessarily reflect the views of Massively as a whole. If you're afraid of opinions other than your own, you might want to skip this column.

The very first Soapbox was penned by our Editor-in-Chief Shawn Schuster, who posited that MMOs have an hour to grab his attention -- or he was gone like the wind, baby. I understand where he was coming from and mostly agree with his sentiments, especially as someone who deals in many MMOs over the course of a year.

Devs should work their butts off to give us a gripping and intuitive experience from the get-go, but lately I'm wondering if even the best beginning is enough for the community. At the risk of over-generalizing, I see signs that there's a chunk of MMO players that will never, ever be satisfied. These are the players who fully judge a game before it even releases, who perhaps relent to give 15 minutes of their precious attention before logging out and trashing the title all over the place, or who never let any past "failure" or perceived slight go so as to give the game another try.

To them I want to say: Give MMOs a chance. A real chance. Do this, and you might just be surprised at how these games can delight you.

RaiderZ shows off the Broken Mast

We get it. Pirates. Always pirates.
Every character needs to start somewhere. In RaiderZ, "somewhere" is the Broken Mast. It's a coastal zone filled with marauding pirates, malicious sea creatures, and plenty of magical ruins. It's also the first zone to receive a video preview showing off these highlights as well as some of the action combat that defines RaiderZ's gameplay.

The video gives an overview of the major threats to adventurers in the area, showing off some visually appealing locations as well as what appears to be the option for environmental destruction. There's also a preview of the magical constructs guarding the heart of the area's ruins. While there's only so much to be seen in a minute-long video preview, it's enough to get a feel for how diverse the zone is. So if you're eager for a look at what you'll be able to smack around once you get in in the game, take a look past the break for the full preview.

Wings Over Atreia Speculation continues for Aion
Last week, I dared venture into the realms of speculation about Aion's future, spurred by the announcement regarding update 4.0. Are my musings simply wishful thinking? Perhaps. But you can't blame me -- NCsoft started it! Until that point, I hadn't really given much thought to the next big thing. After all, we haven't even seen patch 3.5 yet (more on that next week), and I personally haven't finished the latest content. However, update information is like cheesecake bites: One morsel just doesn't cut it. You want more!

So now that the floodgates of Aion 4.0 conjecture have opened, what else might come into the world of Atreia besides the three new classes? In the absence of official word, I have created my own list of features. And topping that list are a few things we have actually seen before; in my opinion, NCsoft should get to cranking out more of the content teased back in 2009 in the famed Visions of the Future trailer.

It's time to start delivering on more of those promises made to Aion players so long ago. That means two-person mounts, more regional season changes, and the chance to boldly go where no Deava has gone before:

In orbit, astronauts all carry holograms of the solar system.
In the wake of NASA successfully landing a robot rover on Mars recently, you might be wondering what happened to the NASA-themed MMO titled Astronaut: Moon, Mars and Beyond. The first thing that's happened to it is that the project has been retitled Starlite. Project Whitecard Studios Inc. hopes the new name will be less cumbersome and also provide a better idea of what the game is about at a glance.

Development has progressed on the game as well, with a beta expected to begin sometime before the end of 2012. Prospective players can experience the game on mobile devices and browsers to minimize barriers to entry. If you're interested in a game focused on the technical side of space travel and exploring to the boundary of our solar system, keep a close watch for news on the upcoming beta.

Gamescom 2012 Coffee with CJ Games
During this year's Gamescom, we met with the folks of CJ Games for a coffee near Cologne's central station, away from the hectic crowds of the show floors, to talk about what the Korean giant has in store for us in the near future. Earlier this year, CJ Games opened its North American subsidiary, which is tasked with bringing some of the company's most popular games to western audiences, and we were curious as to what it's got cooking. Jon-Enée Merriex, producer at CJ Games, talked us through three of the studio's upcoming titles: District 187: Sin Streets, Monarch, and Hounds.

Guild Wars 2 launch events coming September 1st
Looking for a way to celebrate the release of a certain fantasy title with other like-minded fans? Launch events for Guild Wars 2 are coming a few days after the game's release, but don't go blaming the launch parties for being lazy. They've got to revive several overworked and passed-out ArenaNet employees, after all.

ArenaNet has just posted a list of launch events across the US for Guild Wars 2. The events will take place on Saturday, September 1st, in Seattle, Austin, Orlando, New York, and Los Angeles. Devs will be on hand to sign Guild Wars paraphernalia, stage quiz contests, hold raffles, and give away T-shirts, posters, Guild Wars 2 collector's editions, and exclusive in-game items to the first takers.

ArenaNet hasn't forgotten its fans in Europe; the studio will be partnering with agencies in the region to hand out similar goodies.

                        Venus Rising - Centaur
What's better than an orgy-filled MMORPG? How about an orgy-filled MMORPG that doesn't have orgy in the title so that you can keep the fact that you're playing it on the down-low?

FoxySoft wants you to know that it has re-christened the game formerly known as Orgia Romanus. The new name is Venus Rising, but there's still a focus on adult content that the firm's press release likens to that of Red Light Center and portions of Second Life.

A playable Orgia Romanus demo is coming your way on December 1st. The build will feature "inter-character relationships, economy, combat, and sample quests." More info is available via FoxySoft's website.

Last month, we told you about ArenaNet's decision to name a Guild Wars 2 server after late gamer Roger "Oldroar" Rall. Today, Rall's guild has issued a press release reminding everyone of an in-game memorial service that's happening on September 5th.

The event is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. EDT and will be held on the Sanctum of Rall server at the Shaemoor Garrison in Queensdale. The Gaiscioch Family also says that anyone is welcome to attend via RaidCall. Further details are available at the guild's official website.

DUST 514 and EVE Online 'initial integration' now playing on Singularity test server
CCP has announced that EVE Online and DUST 514 players can now officially communicate with one another in-game on the firm's Singularity test server.

DUST mercenaries and EVE capsuleers can chat each other up in the local channels of several empire systems, according to a new CCP forum post. EVE-mail messages can also be exchanged between the two playerbases, and DUST items are now visible on EVE's in-game market (though it's currently impossible to buy them through the EVE client).

CCP says initial EVE/DUST interaction is necessarily limited due to several known issues and the age of Singularity's current code base, but today's announcement marks an exciting first step in the firm's long-range plan to merge its long-running sci-fi MMORPG with its new PlayStation 3 shooter.

Leaderboard: Would you have played Copernicus?

Leaderboard Would you have played Copernicus
We just love tantalizing ourselves with "what ifs?" in the MMO sphere, don't we? There are so many alternate possibilities for the development and growth of these games, not to mention all of the ones that didn't even make it to launch day.

The most recent of these, of course, is "What if Project Copernicus had actually launched? What if it were as close to completion and as good as they said?" For some, that's just a mild shrug; for others, it's a maddening proposition. Since the collapse of 38 Studios, we've seen several pieces of concept art and videos that will most likely be the closest we'll ever get to Copernicus.

So today's Leaderboard is simple: Given everything you've seen and heard of the game, would you have played it? Did Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning convince you that this world would've made for a great MMO? Did Copernicus look like it had merit, or was it yet another fantasy game that probably couldn't compete for your affections?

                          Vote after the jump!
