Putin's 2020 Calendar Goes On Sale In Russia

CNN: The Putin 2020 calendars appear to portray a kinder, gentler Kremlin leader

Moscow (CNN)In Russia, the release of calendars featuring photos of Russian President Vladimir Putin has become an annual ritual.

In past years, it's been an occasion to showcase the Kremlin leader's carefully managed image as a macho man of action. The calendars often feature the Russian President baring his chest, showing his prowess at the shooting range, or engaged in robust outdoor activities.

This year's versions, however, take a markedly different tone. One focuses largely on images of Putin as an international statesman. No topless photos; the President is instead shown wearing a suit and tie.

The Nazi Sub Sunk When The Captain Took A Dump

J.D. Simkins, Military Times: This Nazi sub was sunk when its captain took a dump

One of the most spectacular, albeit minor, Allied victories of World War II had absolutely no Allied involvement whatsoever.

It came in the form of the Nazi submarine U-1206. The Type VIIC boat was a technological marvel armed with two anti-aircraft guns, five torpedo tubes, and most impressively, a complex toilet that could flush waste into the ocean from deep below the surface.

So complex was the sub's plumbing apparatus that each crewman of the U-1206 needed to be specially potty trained on its operational capabilities prior to its April 1945 launch from Kristiansand, Norway — a matter of weeks before the war in Europe ended.

Based on Marshall Pugh's book Commander Crabb, it was made following the publicity created by Crabb's mysterious disappearance and likely death during a Cold War incident a year earlier.

The film depicts events in Gibraltar harbour during the World War II Italian frogman and manned torpedo attacks, although the film's depiction of those events is highly fictionalised.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - After armed men raided the home of Hussein Adel al-Madani and his wife Sara Talib last year, the Iraqi activists spent months of self-imposed exile in Turkey, changed address upon returning home and ceased participating in protests, according to two friends of the couple.

But a day after anti-government demonstrations erupted in Baghdad in October, unidentified gunmen believed by activists to be working on behalf of Iran-backed militia shot the couple dead in their home in the southern city of Basra, said the friends and two security sources familiar with the incident. Sara was several months pregnant.

Reuters: Iraq PM says he will quit after cleric's call but violence rages on

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi announced his resignation on Friday after the country's senior Shi'ite Muslim cleric urged lawmakers to reconsider their support for a government rocked by weeks of deadly anti-establishment unrest.

Violence raged on in southern Iraq, however, killing at least 21 people, and one protester was killed in central Baghdad as demonstrations continued including a thousands-strong sit-in at Tahrir Square in the Iraqi capital.

Young, unemployed and unarmed protesters have led calls for an overhaul of a political system they say is endemically corrupt and serves foreign powers, especially Baghdad's ally Tehran.

The 65-year-old said she had failed to notice the staircase leading up to the stage and lost her balance as she tried to climb up.

Does Russia's Spy Agencies Use Bitcoins To Finance Their Operations?

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:00 PM PST

RFE: How Much Did Russian Spy Agencies Rely On Bitcoin? New Hints In Leaked Recordings

When it was seized by U.S. law enforcement in 2017, BTC-e was described as "one of the world's largest and most widely used digital-currency exchanges." It was also one of the most notorious.

Billions of bitcoin and other digital currencies had been swapped since BTC-e's creation six years prior. But that was before one of its alleged founders, Aleksandr Vinnik, was arrested on a Greek beach in 2017 on a U.S. arrest warrant. The following year, Special Counsel Robert Mueller revealed precise evidence in alleging how Russia's military intelligence agency used bitcoin transactions to mask meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections.

Earlier this month, new glimpses into the shadowy world of cryptocurrencies emerged in a BBC Russian Service report that provided more indications of how exactly Russian spy agencies were intertwined with bitcoin exchanges like BTC-e.

WNU Editor: There are a lot of claims and allegations in the above report, but there is also an admission that there is scant incriminating evidence to draw any conclusions ....

.... For now, there's scant incriminating evidence -- at least publicly -- that would directly expose how the money flows, something that would be of burning interest to U.S. intelligence agencies who have already concluded that the 2016 election interference campaign was authorized by President Vladimir Putin himself.

The above RFE report is still an interesting read, especially for those who are interested in Bitcoins.

Denmark Has Put Greenland On The Top Of Its National Security Agenda

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:22 PM PST

BBC: Danes see Greenland security risk amid Arctic tensions

Denmark has for the first time put mineral-rich Greenland top of its national security agenda, ahead of terrorism and cybercrime.

The Defence Intelligence Service (FE) linked its change in priorities to US interest in Greenland, expressed in President Donald Trump's desire to buy the vast Arctic territory.

Greenland is part of Denmark, but has significant autonomy, including freedom to sign major business deals.

China has mining deals with Greenland.

The FE's head Lars Findsen said Greenland was now a top security issue for Denmark because a "power game is unfolding" between the US and other global powers in the Arctic.

In August the Danish government dismissed as "absurd" President Trump's suggestion of a US-Denmark land deal over Greenland.

Mr Trump then cancelled a state visit to Denmark and called Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen "nasty".

Inside An Afghan Prison That Holds 2,000 Taliban Fighters

BBC: Inside Block Six

The prison wing that holds 2,000 Taliban

Pul-e-Charkhi prison, on the outskirts of Afghanistan's capital Kabul, is surrounded by colossal grey stone walls topped with barbed wire, and guarded by numerous watch towers and huge steel gates. Of the 10,000 inmates, about one fifth are Taliban - Afghanistan's hardline Islamist insurgent group.

Taliban inmate Mawlawi Fazel Bari says he wasn't born a fighter, but after five years in prison, he says he's never felt more ready to die.

"I have become so frustrated. I never thought I would carry out a suicide motor-bomb, but now, by god I swear I will."

For the time being, Bari will remain incarcerated at the top-security jail. But the prison is one of a number across the country that has been releasing Taliban prisoners in unprecedented numbers, as part of a goodwill gesture by a government locked out of peace talks.

As the only remaining male in his family - his father and two brothers were killed while he was in jail - he says for now he must stay at home to run the family farm.

He believes that of those prisoners recently freed, he is one of only a handful who are still alive.

"I believe 95% of those recently released have rejoined the Taliban and a lot of them have already died," he says.

Let this sink in .... 95% of those recently released are dead. That is a very telling number.

Taliban Say They Are Ready To Resume Peace Talks

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:10 AM PST

ABC News Online: Taliban says it is ready to resume peace talks, a day after Trump visits Afghanistan

The Taliban has said they are ready to restart peace talks with the United States, a day after President Donald Trump made a surprise visit to US troops in Afghanistan and said he believed the radical group would agree to a ceasefire.

Mr Trump's Thanksgiving Day visit was his first to Afghanistan since becoming President and came a week after a prisoner swap between Washington and Kabul that has raised hopes for a long-elusive peace deal to end the 18-year-long war.

"The Taliban wants to make a deal and we are meeting with them," Mr Trump told reporters after arriving in Afghanistan on Thursday.

Taliban leaders have told Reuters that the group has been holding meetings with senior US officials in Doha since last weekend, adding they could soon resume formal peace talks.

On Friday, Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the hardline Islamist insurgent group, said they were "ready to restart the talks" that collapsed after Mr Trump had called them off earlier this year.

DW: Iraq prime minister Adel Abdul Mahdi says he will resign

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said Friday he would submit his resignation to parliament just hours after the country's top Shiite cleric put pressure on the government.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said Friday he would submit his resignation to parliament as the government faces nearly two months of deadly protests against the political elite.

The announcement broadcast on state television came as Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, said in his Friday sermon that parliament, which put Abdul Mahdi in power, should "reconsider its options.''

"In response to this call, and in order to facilitate it as quickly as possible, I will present to parliament a demand (to accept) my resignation from the leadership of the current government," said the statement, signed by Abdul Mahdi.

Armed police shot dead a knifeman wearing a fake suicide vest on London Bridge today after he stabbed up to five people in a shocking terrorist attack as frightened crowds fled the scene.

Up to five people were stabbed before the knife maniac ran onto London Bridge shortly before 2pm, where dramatic video showed he was tackled to the ground by at least six heroic members of the public.

Seconds later police told people on top of the suspect to move away, before dragging the last bystander to safety and opening fire. Officers were heard shouting 'stop moving' twice before shooting the man at close range.

One of the brave heroes was on the other side of the bridge, before tackling the man and wrestling the knife off him. The suspect lay on the ground still moving as officers backed away - clearly fearing they were still in danger.

Remembering The Battle For Fallujah 15 Years Later

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 07:57 AM PST

Andrea Scott, Marine Times: The second battle of Fallujah: 15 years later

The dust and grime were finally starting to settle as the sun set in Iraq.

Marine Cpl. Stephen Berge was in an abandoned factory in Fallujah when he felt the tides turning.

He didn't know at the time that this second battle of Fallujah he currently was in, also known as Operation Phantom Fury, would become known as the bloodiest battle of the Iraq War.

But he did have a feeling in his gut he would be going home soon.

It was Thanksgiving Day. And Berge was sitting down to his first hot meal since the Marines had invaded the city on Nov. 7, 2004.

A tire on a broken-down tram loader had required someone to stay behind that day, and the heavy equipment operator was it.

The Hill: Trump back in Florida after whirlwind Afghanistan trip

President Trump arrived in Florida early Friday morning following his surprise trip to Afghanistan to see U.S. troops on Thanksgiving, his second visit to a combat zone as president and his first to Afghanistan.

Trump's plane touched down at Palm Beach International Airport shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday. Trump sported a red "Keep America Great" hat and open-collar dress shirt when departing the presidential aircraft, before taking a short drive to his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The president had quietly left the estate on Wednesday night, boarding a military plane at an undisclosed airport and heading to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, D.C., where he transferred to a second Air Force One 747 that flew to Bagram Airfield north of Kabul.

That Is One Big Narco Sub Caught Off The Coast Of Europe

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:14 AM PST

Warzone/The Drive: The First Narco Submarine Ever Seized Off A European Coast Is A Monster

This is the first time authorities in Europe have intercepted one of these vessels, which have been a staple in Latin American drug smuggling.

Spanish authorities have successfully recovered a so-called narco submarine that they seized in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the country's Galacia region this past weekend. This is the first time any country in Europe has seized one of these smuggling vessels and it's not entirely clear how it made the thousands-of-miles-long journey from Latin America.

Spain's Guardia Civil, National Police, and Customs Service captured the craft off Galacia on Nov. 24, 2019. The crew had attempted to scuttle it after failing to transfer the approximately three tons of cocaine onboard to another vessel due to poor weather. Those same conditions prevented Spanish security forces from refloating the drug sub until late the next day. They then towed it to port and it has now been pulled out of the water for further inspection.

WNU Editor: No word yet on where did it come from, and did it do the journey across the Atlantic (in primarily bad weather) by itself.

Millions Around The World Strike on Black Friday for Action on Climate Change

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 02:16 PM PST

For years, Black Friday has been sold as a holiday day for the consumer. In the 2018, Black Friday resulted in $6.22 billion in online sales alone, per CNBC. This year, climate activists wants people to stop and reconsider such rampant consumption.

Climate protests are taking place around the world this Black Friday to raise awareness about the dangers of climate change. The protests are also timed to demand action during the U.N. climate negotiations, COP25, which will begin in Madrid, Spain on Dec. 2.

Climate activists say more than 80 strikes are happening in the U.S. alone. Protests have already happened in Asia and Europe. In Germany alone, activists say 630,000 turned out.

According to organizers, protesters plan to disrupt large shopping centers in Chicago and hold a march and a rally in Los Angeles called “Don’t Shop. Strike!” According to Reuters, organizers expect strikes to take place in 2,300 cities in 152 countries around the world.

Ritvik Janamsetty, a spokesman for climate coalition Earth Uprising, tells TIME he estimates around 2 million people took part in strikes Friday.

Germany Climate Protests
Jens Meyer—APThousands of demonstrators attend a protest climate strike ralley of the ‘Friday For Future Movement’ in Leipzig, Germany, Friday, Nov. 29, 2019.

“We are striking because our leaders haven’t been listening to us. They think our voices are ones they can ignore and not take seriously,” 16-year-old American climate activist Maya Arengo said in a statement. “They don’t understand that we, the youth, are terrified for our futures and we won’t stop fighting until our futures are secure.”

Thunberg rose to prominence in 2018 when she started striking from school on Fridays to demand action on climate change in her home country of Sweden. She has since launched a movement called Fridays for Future, inspiring millions of people around the world to strike from school or work on Fridays to demand movement to fight the climate crisis.

In September, Thunberg and other activists led a global climate strike, which drew millions of people around the world to protest and demand action to fight the coming climate catastrophe. Those same organizers have planned protests around the world on Black Friday, hoping to raise awareness of the days ecological impact and demand climate action from COP25 in Spain next week.

Ice Cream company Ben & Jerry’s, whose owners are known for progressive politics, tweeted out a map of strikes in the U.S.

Reuters reports that thousands of people in Asia and Europe have already taken part in the protests.

According to social media, protests took place across the U.K., including in London, Belfast, Bristol Brighton and Plymouth.

Protestors in Australia have also turned out. The the country has been hit by a series of devastating wildfires.

Greenpeace Philippines tweeted video of climate protestors in Manila.

Activist Lucky Tran tweeted video of protests she says are from Tokyo:

Per social media, protesters also turned out in Denmark, India, Bangladesh, Austria, Germany and Belgium.

Thunberg has planned to take part in a student strike in Lisbon, per Reuters, although her zero-carbon emissions sailboat crossing the Atlantic from New York was slowed down a few days by high winds. Protests took place in Portugal Friday.

According to the Associated Press, protestors near Paris blocked one of Amazon’s warehouses to protest over-production. They reportedly had signs that said: “Amazon: For the climate, for jobs, stop expansion, stop over-production!”

“The planet burns, oceans die, and we still want to consume, consume, and therefore produce, produce – until we eradicate all living things? … We will not betray our children for a 30% discount!” also reads the manifesto of protestors around Paris, per the AP.

Some French lawmakers have proposed banning Black Friday because it causes “resource waste” and “over consumption,” the AP reports.

In an article posted on the website Project Syndicate, Thunberg, and activists Luisa Neubauer and Angela Valenzuela called for a strike next Friday as well. “To the leaders who are headed to Madrid, our message is simple: the eyes of all future generations are upon you. Act accordingly.”

U.S. Says Cryptocurrency Expert Violated North Korea Sanctions

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 02:05 PM PST

(NEW YORK) — Federal prosecutors have charged a cryptocurrency expert with violating economic sanctions against North Korea by presenting at a conference there this year after the U.S. government denied his request to travel to Pyongyang.

Virgil Griffith, 36, was expected to appear in federal court Friday in Los Angeles, a day after he was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport.

Griffith is an American citizen but lives in Singapore. Messages were sent to Griffith’s defense attorney seeking comment.

Federal prosecutors said Griffith secured a visa through “a (North Korean) diplomatic mission facility” in Manhattan for 100 euros and then traveled to the country through China in April.

A request for comment was sent to North Korea’s United Nations mission in New York.

At the conference, Griffith talked about how North Korea could use cryptocurrency to “achieve independence from the global banking system,” according to a criminal complaint.

The conference was attended by 100 people, prosecutors said, including several who appeared to work for the North Korean government.

The criminal complaint says Griffith showed the FBI photographs of himself in North Korea and provided agents with propaganda from the country.

“Griffith announced his intention to renounce his U.S. citizenship and began researching how to purchase citizenship from other countries,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan said in a news release.

Prosecutors say another person involved in the alleged conspiracy was to be brought to New York and arrested. That person is not named in the criminal complaint against Griffith.

The U.S. attorney in Manhattan, Geoffrey Berman, said Griffith “provided highly technical information to North Korea, knowing that this information could be used to help North Korea launder money and evade sanctions.”

The U.S. and the U.N. Security Council have imposed increasingly tight sanctions on North Korea in recent years to try to rein in its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Pyongyang says it wants the U.S. to get the sanctions lifted and provide security guarantees before North Korea will abandon its advancing nuclear arsenal; the U.S. has said the North has to take substantial steps toward denuclearization before the sanctions will come off.

The U.S. government amended sanctions against North Korea in 2018 to prohibit “a U.S. person, wherever located” from exporting technology to North Korea. Prosecutors said Griffith acknowledged that his presentation amounted to a transfer of technical knowledge to conference attendees.

A self-described former hacker who went on to get a doctorate in computer science, Griffith became something of a tech-world enfant terrible in the early 2000s. He told The New York Times in 2008 that he considered himself a “disruptive technologist.”

In 2007, he created WikiScanner, a tool that aimed to unmask people who anonymously edited entries in Wikipedia, the crowdsourced online encyclopedia. WikiScanner essentially could determine the business, institutions or government agencies that owned the computers from which some edits were made.

It quickly identified businesses that had sabotaged competitors’ entries and government agencies that had rewritten history, among other findings.

“I am quite pleased to see the mainstream media enjoying the public-relations disaster fireworks as I am,” Griffiths told The Associated Press in 2007. (Wikipedia creator Jimmy Wales, for his part, said he welcomed WikiScanner as a tool of transparency.)

Four years earlier, as a college student at the University of Alabama, Griffith and a student at another university were about to tell a hacker conference about purported security flaws in a widely used campus debit card system when the manufacturer sued the two. They had posted online about ways to exploit the alleged flaws to get free vending-machine sodas, laundry machine use and more.

A judge barred the students from discussing the card-swiping system. In a settlement a few months later, they apologized to the company, promised to never actually build a transaction-processing device and agreed to complete 40 hours of community service.

Dutch Police: Multiple People Injured in Stabbing in The Hague

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:19 PM PST

(THE HAGUE, Netherlands) — Dutch police say three people were injured in a stabbing on The Hague’s main shopping street.

Police spokeswoman Marije Kuiper told The Associated Press on Friday that it was still too early to say whether there was a terror motive behind the attack in the Dutch city.

She added it was still unclear whether any of the injuries were life-threatening.

Police said they were looking for at least one suspect, a man about 45 to 50 years old in a grey jogging suit.

Brazil’s President Blames Leonardo DiCaprio Donations for Amazon Fires

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 10:13 AM PST

(RIO DE JANEIRO) — Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is blaming actor Leonardo DiCaprio for making donations to nonprofit organizations that he claims are behind some of the fires in the Amazon rainforest.

Bolsonaro told supporters Friday: “DiCaprio is a cool guy, isn’t he? Giving money to set the Amazon on fire.”

DiCaprio’s environmental organization has pledged $5 million to help protect the Amazon after fires destroyed large parts of the rainforest in July and August.

Boslonaro’s comments follow a police raid at the headquarters of two nonprofit groups in the Amazonian state of Para.

Several volunteer firefighters, who deny wrongdoing, were arrested and later released. Local police say they are being investigated for allegedly igniting fires to obtain funding through nonprofits.

Federal prosecutors say their investigation points to local land-grabbers as primary suspects.

Sudan Overturns Moral Policing Law, Disbands Ex-Ruling Party

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:32 AM PST

(CAIRO) — Sudan’s transitional government announced Friday it overturned a moral policing law that criminalized revealing clothing for women and drinking alcohol and moved to dissolve the country’s former ruling party, fulfilling two major demands from the country’s pro-democracy protesters.

Rights groups say the Public Order Act targets women and is a holdover from the three-decade rule of toppled autocrat Omar al-Bashir.

“This law is notorious for being used as a tool of exploitation, humiliation & violation of rights,” Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok tweeted in reference to the overturned law. “I pay tribute to the women and youth of my country who have endured the atrocities that resulted from the implementation of this law.”

The Public Order Act was first passed in 1992 by al-Bashir’s Islamist government and enforced only in the capital, Khartoum, before being applied nationwide four years later. The Shariah-inspired law criminalized a wide range of individual behavior including revealing clothing and drinking alcohol. Those convicted of violating the act could face prison sentences, fines, lashing and confiscation of property.

For decades, human rights activists have decried the law and argued that its vague language gave the police and judges leeway to prosecute women, who later played a crucial role in the mass protests that culminated in al-Bashir’s overthrow in April.

Amnesty International welcomed the repeal of the controversial law as “a step forward for women’s rights.”

The London-based rights group also called on the transitional government to overturn other repressive clauses in criminal laws such as articles dictating women’s dress code and flogging as a form of punishment.

Sudan’s sovereign council and cabinet announced both decisions after a fourteen-hour long meeting that ended shortly after midnight on Thursday. It said the law to dismantle al-Bashir’s National Congress Party would also confiscate all the ex-ruling party’s assets and funds.

The sovereign council grew out of a power-sharing agreement between the country’s ruling generals and protesters demanding sweeping political change. Under the deal, the council and the civilian-led cabinet share legislative powers until a new parliament is formed.

Pro-democracy groups in the country have also held fresh protests demanding the former ruling party’s disbandment and the exclusion of all its remnants from different state institutions.

Prime Minister Hamdok tweeted that the bill dismantling al-Bashir’s party is not the outcome of “a quest of vengeance but rather to preserve and restore the dignity of our people who have grown weary of the injustice under the hands of NCP, who have looted & hindered the development of this great nation.”

The Sudanese Professionals Association, which spearheaded the uprising against al-Bashir, hailed the move as “an important step” towards the establishment of a civil and democratic state in Sudan.

Sudan’s Justice Minister Nasr-Eddin Abdul-Bari announced that the law passed by the interim government on Friday would transfer all assets and funds of al-Bashir’s party to the state treasury.

“With this law, we will be able to retrieve a lot of funds that were taken from the public treasury to create institutions that acted as a parallel state,” Abdul-bari told reporters after the meeting.

Al-Bashir was arrested after his overthrow in April and is currently on trial for charges of corruption and money laundering. A verdict is scheduled for Dec. 14.

2 Killed In London and at Least 3 Injured in The Hague in Separate Stabbing Incidents. Here’s What We Know So Far

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:50 AM PST

Two people were killed in a stabbing incident on London Bridge in Central London, in what has been described by police as a terror incident. Three other people are in hospital. The man suspected of carrying out the attack was shot by police.

Just hours after the attack in London, Dutch police also reported that multiple people were injured in a stabbing on a shopping street in The Hague, and are still looking for the suspect. Per the Associated Press, three people were injured, and a police spokeswoman said it is still unclear if those injuries are life-threatening.

What Happened at London Bridge?

At a press conference Friday night, police said the attack began at Fishmongers Hall in the City of London. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said, “My understanding is that police were called at 13:58hrs and City of London police officers had bravely and professionally confronted the suspect by 14:03hrs, just five minutes later.

Police confirmed that a suspect had been shot and died at the scene, and two members of the public were killed. In a press conference Friday night, police also said three other victims are in the hospital. Assistant commissioner Neil Basu said the suspect was wearing a hoax suicide vest.

BRITAIN-POLICE-BRIDGE
AFP via Getty ImagesPolice and emergency vechiles gather near London Bridge in London, on November 29, 2019 after reports of shots being fired on London Bridge.

“As you would expect, due to the nature of the incident, we responded as though this this was terrorist related. I am now in a position to confirm that it has been declared a terrorist incident,” Basu said. “I must stress we retain an open mind as to any motive.”

London Bridge was the site of a terror attack in 2017. The bridge remained on lockdown on Friday evening, but police indicated that the man who was shot was the only suspect in the incident.

Several videos circulating on Twitter appeared to show a group of people wrestling a man to the ground, before he was shot by police.

Dick thanked the members of the public who have helped, either by tackling the attacker or by the following the police’s instructions.

Dick said more police will be patrolling London in the coming days. She added were working to determine if anyone besides the suspect was involved in the attack.

“The empty ideology of terror offers nothing but hatred and today I urge everyone to reject that,” Dick added. “Ours is a great city because we embrace each other’s differences. We must emerge stronger still from this tragedy. In doing that we will ensure that the few who seek to divide us will never, ever succeed.”

“Heartbreaking confirmation from the Met Commissioner that two people who were attacked this afternoon have tragically died – victims of the appalling terrorist attack at London Bridge,” Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, said in a statement. “My heart goes out to them, their loved ones and to everybody affected. London will never be cowed by terrorism. Terrorism will never win.”

“What’s remarkable about the images we’ve seen is the breathtaking heroism of members of the public who literally ran towards danger not knowing what confronted them,” Khan said. “We do know from the statement given by Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu that there appears to be a device on the suspect. Members of the public didn’t realize at the time that was a hoax device. They really are the best of us; another example of the bravery of Londoners.”

Police said that officers were called to a stabbing at a building on the north side of the bridge at 1.58 p.m. local time.

The BBC journalist John McManus was at the scene, and indicated in a call to BBC News that it was police who fired the shots, after he saw what he thought to be a fight on the bridge. People were trying to hold somebody down, he said, and then two shots were fired. After crowds were moved away by police, he continued, several more shots were fired.

Ambulances and several police vans arrived quickly to the scene, which is near the Shard skyscraper to the south and the City of London financial hub to the north.

London’s Metropolitan Police said on Twitter they were in the early stages of an investigation into an incident at the location.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged the public to be “vigilant”. In a statement, Johnson paid tribute to the “extraordinary bravery” of members of the public who “physically intervened to protect the lives of others”.

The Liberal Democrats political party has reportedly canceled plans for a rally Saturday out of respect for the victims of the attack.

In June 2017, three terrorists who were inspired by ISIS mounted a vehicle attack on London Bridge, running down pedestrians in a van before attacking people with knives. Eight people were killed. The attack came days before the 2017 British election; there are currently less than two weeks to go until Britain’s next election.

What Happened in The Hague in the Netherlands?

Dutch police reported on Twitter that multiple people were injured in a stabbing attack along The Hague’s main shopping street on Friday night. The street was busy because of the Black Friday discounts. Per the AP, three people were injured, and authorities have not offered a motive.

Police spokeswoman Marije Kuiper told The AP that it is not clear if the stabbing was a terror attack.

The AP reports that the attack occurred around 7:45 p.m. The AP also reports that pictures from the area show dozens of people being held back by police fencing stopping them reaching the scene what the stabbing occurred.

(BAGHDAD) — Iraq’s prime minister said Friday he would submit his resignation to parliament, a day after more than 40 people were killed by security forces and following calls by Iraq’s top Shiite cleric for lawmakers to withdraw support.

The move by Adel Abdul-Mahdi 13 months after he took over as prime minister triggered celebrations by anti-government protesters who have been camped out in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square for nearly two months. Young men and women broke out in song and dance as news of his imminent resignation reached the square, the capital’s largest.

In a statement, Abdul-Mahdi said he had “listened with great concern” to Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s sermon and made his decision in response to his call and in order to “facilitate and hasten its fulfillment as soon as possible.”

“I will submit to parliament an official memorandum resigning from the current prime ministry so that the parliament can review its choices,” he said. Abdul-Mahdi was appointed prime minister just over a year ago as a consensus candidate between political blocs.

Al-Sistani said parliament, which elected the government of Abdul-Mahdi, should “reconsider its options” in his weekly Friday sermon delivered in the holy city of Najaf via a representative.

“We call upon the House of Representatives from which this current government emerged to reconsider its options in that regard,” al-Sistani said in the statement — a clear sign he was withdrawing his support for the prime minister.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Abdul-Mahdi’s resignation would placate protesters, who are now calling for the removal of the entire political class that has ruled Iraq since the 2003 downfall of Saddam Hussein. Nearly 400 people have been killed in the bloody crackdown on protests since Oct. 1, most of them young protesters shot dead or killed by exploding tear gas canisters fired by security forces.

Amira, a 25-year-old protester, said the resignation should have come many weeks ago.

“We will not stop with the prime minister, we still have more fighting to do. We will push forward until our demands are met,” she said, declining to give her full name, fearing retaliation.

Forty protesters were shot dead by security forces in Baghdad and the southern cities of Najaf and Nasiriyah on Thursday, in a sharp escalation of violence that continued Friday. Najaf is the headquarters of the country’s Shiite religious authority headed by al-Sistani.

Three more protesters were shot and eight wounded by security forces in Nasiriyah on Friday when the demonstrators attempted to enter the city center to resume their sit-in, security and hospital officials said. Security forces had fired live rounds the previous day to disperse protesters from two key bridges, killing 31 people.

Al-Sistani also said protesters should distinguish between peaceful demonstrators and those seeking to turn the movement violent, following the burning of an Iranian consulate building in Najaf on Wednesday that government officials say was perpetrated by saboteurs from outside the protest movement.

The Islamic Dawa party called for parliament to convene immediately and choose an alternative government, in a statement.

A former oil and finance minister and an ex-vice president, the 77-year-old Abdul-Mahdi was seen as a political independent when he took the post in October 2018 and is Iraq’s first prime minister from outside the Dawa party in 12 years.

He moved his offices out of Baghdad’s highly secure Green Zone on the first day of his term, saying he wanted to bring his government closer to the people, and said he wanted to provide security, water and electricity for all Iraqis during his term.

But reality soon caught up as he faced a raft of challenges including high unemployment, widespread corruption and dilapidated public services. His government and key staffers in his office were also seen to be close to Iran.

In Baghdad, protesters gathered around the historic Rasheed Street near the strategic Ahrar Bridge and burned the Iranian flag, chanting “Iran out!”

Four people were shot by security forces on the bridge the previous day. Protesters are also occupying parts of the nearby bridges Jumhuriya and Sinar — all of which lead to the fortified Green Zone, the seat of Iraq’s government.

A spokesman for the U.N. secretary-general expressed deep concern over the use of live ammunition against protesters on Friday.

“The Secretary-General reiterates his call on the Iraqi authorities to exercise maximum restraint, protect the lives of demonstrators, respect the rights to freedom of expression and assembly, and swiftly to investigate all acts of violence,” said Stéphane Dujarric, in a statement.

A three-point guide for corporate India to survive slow growth

Posted:

By Christo PopovMany CEOs should be wringing their hands about the latest figures released by the government on Friday that show GDP grew 4.5% in the second quarter of FY2019, making it the slowest economic growth rate in over six years. This handwringing is also fuelled by rapidly falling consumer demand, which, despite government reforms, could further lower GDP for the third quarter.Leaders are preparing their teams for slowdown, now that Moody's has slashed India's growth forecast earlier this month to 5.6% for 2019. Some are already looking to strategies like lowering prices to ride out the tough times that they believe are here. That way of thinking, however, is dead wrong. India still offers better and more exciting scenarios for growth than almost any country. With 1.4 billion people, it's a marketer's dream. It has a rapidly growing middle class. The McKinsey Global Institute estimates that the number of people in India with annual disposable incomes between Rs 200,000 and Rs 1 million will hit 583 million by 2025. And, according to the 2019 Global Wealth Report from Credit Suisse, there are 759,000 adults with wealth above $1million in the country.Great business leaders never waste a crisis like this. If you can't make money in India right now, it's because you are not paying attention to signals from the market, and aren't looking for opportunity in the right places. Here is what business leaders need to do to turn their companies into agile machines that can make the most of current conditions.*Get under the skin of consumers: Many companies in India aren't studying consumer behaviour in a consistent way. Few have clear market segmentation in place, or an in-depth understanding of the needs & pains of their target consumer. If their sales go flat, they lower prices in a knee-jerk reaction.Companies that want to win need to do ongoing, in-depth analysis of events in the market that affect their businesses to understand cause-and-effect relationships and project future market scenarios accurately. With each change in the market, business leaders need to ask, 'How does it affect my consumers?' 'How will it change their behaviour?' 'For how long?' 'Where would my consumer go if not here?' Rather than invest in traditional market research, companies should send 10 of their team members to talk with 10 customers each every month. Do this and your company's sensitivity to what is happening in the market will go through the roof. You'll only win if you connect the dots faster than your competitors.*Create a single-minded, focused and differentiated strategy: That means allocating your resources only to what matters, and knowing when to say 'no'. Many companies in India are very diversified. Rather than trying to be all things to all people, go deep and make sure you are creating value for the customers you already have. Many local companies have a built-in edge over foreign rivals in that they know their customers well. That advantage can be explored more aggressively. By adopting a narrower focus, companies will be able to understand their customers even better and serving them better than rivals. But understanding customers better than anyone else isn't enough. Companies need to act on this understanding by creating a crystal-clear and differentiated value proposition. Brands invariably grow more quickly, if it's clear to consumers what they do best.*Build ruthless discipline in execution: Many companies in India are still operating very inefficiently by world standards, relying on rigid, hierarchical management structures that slow decision-making. This approach may have worked 20 years ago, when the business world moved more slowly, but today, the market punishes slow-moving, bureaucratic companies severely. The companies that are winning today — and will thrive no matter what the market does — have flatter management structures that let them respond in real time to market conditions.Fortunately, India's population is well-educated, and many companies already employ team members with strong leadership talent and the capability to get things done. Now is the time for leaders to reorganise their operations so that their teams can keep pace with market conditions. Many leaders don't like change. They would rather use the country's falling GDP as an excuse for their company's slow growth than do things differently than they have always done. Their companies will ultimately fail if the economy continues to slow down. The companies that win in today's environment will be the ones who see the big opportunities in India that are there for the taking, and seize them before their competitors do.The writer is CEO, Fast Track Ltd

Canadian billionaire leads $2 bn YES rescue

MUMBAI: Yes Bank said it would raise nearly $2 billion in a share sale with a Canadian billionaire Erwin Singh Braich buying more than half of it or $1.2 billion. The rest will be bought by private equity investors, helping the bank overcome its financial difficulties. The plan is subject to regulatory approvals. In a late night notice to the stock exchanges the bank said that discussions with Braich are ongoing and will be concluded shortly. The binding term sheet for the deal has been hence extended to December 31.Other investors include Citax Holdings Ltd & Citax Investment Group will has pledged to invest $500 million. The bank said it will also get $120 million from a top tier US fund house whose name it will disclose early next week.Among the Indian investors are GMR Group with $50 million, Aditya Birla Family Office $25 million & Rekha Jhunjhunwala with $25 million.Foreign funds Discovery Capital ($50 mln) and Ward Ferry ($30 mln) make up the rest of the investors."In light of the above, the board of directors has today taken a decision to raise upto $ 2 billion through preferential allotment at a price in accordance with Chapter V of the SEBI (Issue of Capital and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2018 [Higher of 2 weeks or 26 weeks average price]. None of the Investors will be allotted equity shares such that their holding exceeds 25% of the share capital of the bank," Yes Bank said in the notice. The bank's board will meet again ron December 10 to finalise & approve the details of the preferential allotment and convene an extra-ordinary general meeting subsequently, to obtain the approval of the shareholders. "Such preferential allotment shall be subject to receipt of all regulatory and statutory approvals, as may be applicable. Further, the trading window for dealing in Securities of the Bank shall continue to remain closed for the Designated Persons and for the Connected Persons till December 12, 2019 and hence, they are not permitted to trade in the securities of the bank," Yes Bank said. The bank's shares ended at Rs 68.30 a piece down 2.50% on Friday. The investor interest for the bank shares is a milestone for Yes Bank which is fighting its way out of trouble under CEO Ravneet Gill after a surge in bad loans and management changes shook investor confidence. The bank had to provide huge sums for doubtful loans, while corporate frauds in companies such as CG Power and Cox & Kings made the situation worse. Amid this, founder Rana Kapoor who was denied another term as CEO by the RBI last year, lost his stake when lenders sold off his shares for failing to meet payment obligations. Gill was appointed CEO in January and began his three-year term in March. In an interview with ET earlier this month, CEO Ravneet Gill said that the bank will be able to get in capital before the end of the calendar year. The bank posted a loss of Rs 600 crore in the September quarter due to a one-off tax hit of Rs 709 crore on account of change in corporate tax rate regime. Excluding this one-time hit, adjusted profit was Rs 109 crore. Gross bad loan ratio rose to 7.4% from 5% at the end of June.In August, Yes Bank raised $275 million by selling shares to a bunch of domestic investors and foreign portfolio investors, which helped improve its capital adequacy ratio to 8.60% from 8% in June.

Techies take ‘fast’ lane on net highway

BENGALURU: On most weekends, Sampad Swain used to be glued to his smartphone — streaming Netflix and Amazon Prime. The time he spent on the phone was as much as 10 hours a day. But that was then.Since October, the cofounder of payments and ecommerce startup Instamojo has cut down drastically on screen time, using his phone for not more than two hours a day during weekends. Tech workers most addicted to the internet are finding ways to wean themselves off the habit, beating cold turkey with a deliberate and phased fasting. Swain calls it detox."Streaming was a big part of my life," he told ET. "After I cut down watching video streaming apps including Netflix, I started using my free time to read books. The main reason for detox is to learn new things."Mental health professionals are urging people to put their phones aside during particular times of the day or on the weekends. Ranged against that advice are all mobile applications in the world doing their best to attract user attention through umpteen notifications, all developed by software and tech pros themselves. Suddenly there's time for irony, reading books and discovering the great outdoors… even parents, at least in one case.Rapunzel Pereira, who works for an IT firm in Bengaluru, is making conscious efforts not to use the mobile internet, especially on the weekends."I used to spend several hours on social media but this is not my thing anymore," the 27-yearold said, impressed at her own discipline. A frequent traveller, Pereira now switches data off whenever she goes trekking, touring and on the weekends.Content marketing professional Bhavana Narayan has launched ScreenFreeSunday, a campaign among her friends that persuades them to stay off their phones on the holiday."By staying away from the phone more often than I used to, I am able to catch up on so many other activities such as gymming, music and reading that I had skipped," she said."From being glued to the phone always, I have now transformed myself into a person who is more attentive to my parents and also active in whatever I do," she said.Internet fasting is used to wean people off tech addiction. Japan introduced the concept a few years ago after officials found that over a half a million children were suffering significant consequences of being tied to their screens.Clinical psychologist Manoj Kumar Sharma said internet fasting is a conscious decision to turn off and tune out."Whenever people extremely addicted to gaming or streaming come to us, we advise them to take a short break after each game or show," he said. "That often works as tech addicts are likely to lose interest to continue after a break."Sharma, who heads the Service for Healthy Use of Technology (SHUT) clinic at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) in Bengaluru, treats as many as 10 cases of tech addiction a week. Apart from mental effects, such behaviour leads to eye problems, carpal tunnel syndrome and fatigue.A Nimhans study in 2018 found that 27.1% of engineering students met the criterion for mild addictive internet use and 9.7% for moderate addictive internet use. It was severe for about 0.4%. Internet addiction was higher among engineering students who were male, staying in rented accommodation, accessed the internet several times a day, spent more than three hours per day on the internet and had psychological distress, according to the study of 1,086 people. The World Health Organization said last year that the dramatic increase in use of the internet, computers, smartphones and other electronic devices had brought clear benefits. But it has also led to excessive use, which has negative health consequences. In an increasing number of countries, the problem has reached the magnitude of a significant public health concern, it said.Behavioural research scholar Ranjan Jagannathan said people underestimate the number of times they are interrupted by the smartphone and its effect on overall productivity."Our study revealed that on an average, each person gets about 80 to 100 phone notifications a day," Jagannathan said, citing his own India-specific research of 2017. He cited another US study which reported that a person takes 23 minutes to regain focus on their original task after every interruption. His response was to create an app to fix this. It's called Daywise and was developed by Jagannathan's startup Synapse. The app makes sure that notifications are only sent at intervals."The Android-only app sends notifications in batches and also has a feature that alerts users in case the notification is important and warrants immediate attention," said Jagannathan, who has previously worked as a researcher at Duke University.

Companies need to do a lot more: Rishad Premji

BENGALURU: Indian companies need to do more to run their businesses fairly and ethically, benefiting all stakeholders, even as they look to increase their contribution to society and the environment, said Wipro chairman Rishad Premji."On the whole I don't think the business sector is doing enough – we must do a lot more – the global challenges of inequity, injustice, deprivation, and the crisis of climate change are so large, that all of us need to do a lot more – we cannot believe that we are doing enough," he said.Rishad has imbibed the principle of companies being good corporate citizens from father Azim Premji, who quit as Wipro chairman in July to focus on philanthropy. The Bengaluru-based company's activities in giving back to society have won it the 2019 The Economic Times Corporate Citizen of The Year Award. "It's a recognition for the selfless dedication and sustained work of Wiproites and equally of our partners who work across a range of areas – from school education and water conservation to supporting children with disabilities," Rishad Premji said.Wipro's journey towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) began in 2001 with its first intervention in school education. Since then, it has expanded to participate in community care and ecology and environment. The company set up the Wipro Foundation, a separate entity created in 2017, to manage its CSR programmes. It actively involves employees in giving back to society and the neighbourhoods where it operates, through Wipro Cares. "From the early days, Wipro has always believed that business organisations must serve a larger social purpose," Premji said. "We must run our businesses successfully, with integrity and fairness, but we must also be active and engaged citizens of the world."The impact of this is measured. In FY19, more than 12,500 employees of Wipro spent around 30,000 hours of volunteering time with partner-organisations in 20 locations in India, the US, the UK, Japan, Australia and the Philippines."All of us have to contribute to making this world better – and those who have more influence and capacity, and large corporations today have a lot of this – must do their bit in proportion to that influence," Premji said.Wipro and other IT firms such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and Tech Mahindra allocate funds and resources to CSR, primarily to improve quality of education in the country.

F&O: Nifty outlook bullish till it holds above 11,980-12,000 zone

Posted:

By Chandan Taparia The new derivatives series kicked off on a negative note on Friday, as Nifty saw selling pressure due to unfavourable cues from Asian bourses. The benchmark indices started correcting from initial trades and continued to make lower lows in the first half of the session. However, due to some bounce in the later half, Nifty ended the session a tad above 12,050 and formed a Red body candle on the daily chart. The index concluded the week with gain of 1.19 per cent and formed a green body candle on weekly chart. A positive momentum after the formation of three consecutive Doji candles on weekly chart is a positive sign for the market. Thus, till the time Nifty holds above 11980–12000, we maintain our positive stance on the market for an upmove towards 12,250. On the December monthly options front, Maximum Put open interest was at 12,000 followed by 11,500 strike, while maximum Call OI was at 12,500 followed by 12,600 strike. Call writing was at 12,100 and 12,300 strike, while marginal Put writing was seen at 11,800 strike. Option data suggests a shift in trading range between 11,900 and 12,300 levels. India VIX eased 0.66 per cent to 13.89. Till VIX remains below 15 zone, then we may see continuation in the ongoing optimism in coming days. Bank Nifty started the session on a negative note and corrected in the first half of the session. However, some buying interest was witnessed in the later half and it formed a small red body candle on the daily chart. The banking index took support around its previous swing high of 31,783 and rebounded piercingly, which is a positive sign for the index. It made a higher high for the seventh consecutive week and formed a big green candle on weekly chart, which clearly shows strength in the index. Until it sustains above 31,783, an upmove toward 32,500 and 32,800 cannot be ruled out. Nifty futures fell 0.44 per cent to 12,092. Builtup of long positions were seen in Bharti Infratel, L&T Finance, NBCC, PVR and Tata Global Beverages, while shorts were seen in YES bank, Motherson Sumi, Apollo Tyre, Tata Motor and ZEE. Weak rupee prompting global funds to dump Indian bonds

Posted:

By Anurag JoshiIndia needs all the help it can get as it tries to develop its small corporate bond market to overcome a cash crunch that's hobbled economic growth.Weakness in the rupee, though, is making that harder. Foreign investors spooked by the currency's slide sold 74 billion rupees ($1.03 billion) of local notes more than they bought this month, the most since April, dragging their holdings down to a 2.5-year low of 1.9 trillion rupees.Cash-strapped businesses struggling to get financing amid a shadow banking crisis would no doubt like to see foreigners taking out their checkbooks more -- global investors make up only a small proportion of overall local corporate bond holdings. But rising defaults, a slowing economy and a sovereign outlook downgrade by Moody's Investors Service have given global funds further pause. The rupee is the worst performer among emerging market peers in Asia this half. That's crimped flows from offshore into corporate bonds.Foreign FlowsIt's a different picture for the nation's stock market as investors expect to profit more from recent corporate tax cuts. Foreigners were net buyers of $3 billion of Indian equities this month, headed for the highest since March.Prime Minister Narendra Modi's steps to revive economic growth aren't assuring many corporate debt investors. Data scheduled Friday is likely to show gross domestic product expanded less than 5 per cent, according to forecasts.Moody's and S&P Global Ratings have flagged risks that the troubled shadow lending sector will worsen a prolonged credit squeeze.Still, some yield-starved international fund managers are bargain hunting for Indian corporate debt -- it's just that they're going for dollar bonds, which preclude the need for currency hedges. That's helped issuance of foreign-currency securities by Indian borrowers reach a record in 2019.
