AMD 11.11 CAP 2 Adds CrossFireX Support to Saints Row 3, Skyrim Profile Still MIA

Posted: 20 Nov 2011 07:35 PM PST

DriversAMD Crossfire users struggling to maintain a passable frame rate in Saints Row 3 or Gothic 4 take note. AMD has released Catalyst 11.11 WHQL CAP 2, which enables Crossfire profiles for both titles, and most importantly, lets you make full use of both graphics cards. If like me you were hoping Skyrim would make the cut for this latest CAP we have bad news for you, it didn't. The last update from AMD on this front was 5 days ago, and said little more than they were hoping to release it ASAP.

Considering that NVidia had drivers ready on launch day, we can't help but wonder what's taking so long.

-  Saints Row 3:  Resolves stuttering seen when playing in CrossFireX mode.   Also provides Single GPU and CrossFireX performance improvements when running in lower resolution configurations

-  Gothic 4 Arcania:  Fall of Setarrif:  Improves CrossFire performance

Starz Outlines its Digital Strategy Post Netflix

Posted: 20 Nov 2011 03:20 PM PST

StarzWith Netflix's 21.5 million streaming subscribers set to lose access to Starz's content in February 2012, everyone has been left wondering what comes next. The company's content catalog currently includes hundreds of movies from Sony and Walt Disney, including several original programs such as "Spartacus" and "Boss". Will the company retreat back to the safety of established cable networks? According to Starz President Chris Albrecht they still have a bright future ahead of them online, but will soon be going direct to customers with an HBO Go-like application for phones, tablets, and other popular streaming platforms.

Albrecht described his decision to cut ties with Netflix as "a big boy choice", and claimed that it would benefit his company in the long run. "We would have eroded...our core business," Albrecht said at the investor conference for his channel's parent company, Liberty Media. "Within two to three years the Netflix deal would have been a drag on Starz's earnings."

From what we can tell Starz is planning to offer access to even those without an existing cable TV package, though he was a bit unclear if this is the strategy he is actively pursuing, or simply what he'd like to do.

Would you pay for a separate Starz streaming subscription? If so what would you be willing to pay?

Seagate Estimates Hard Drive Production Won’t Return to Pre-Flood Levels for Another Year

Posted: 20 Nov 2011 02:53 PM PST

Seagate HDDWe hate to be constantly beating the doomsday drum on the hard drive crisis in Taiwan, but Seagate isn't making any easier to give this a positive spin. According to Chief Executive Officer Stephen J. Luczo, Wall Street is talking nonsense if they think drive production will reach pre-flood as estimated in the summer of 2012. Instead Luczo estimates it will take a full 12 months to bring everything back online, and he expects it to be a difficult road ahead for the entire industry since more than 130 of its suppliers are still under three feet of water.

"It's going to be very interesting to see who gets drives and who doesn't," Luczo said, adding that customers are stockpiling large capacity drives in anticipation of shortages, even despite the higher prices. "Some have offered $250 million upfront," he told Bloomberg. Looking 12 months ahead Luczo has also confirmed we are unlikely to see pre-flood pricing for even longer. "People are going to appreciate the complexity of this business," he said.

DRAM Prices Stabilize As Manufacturing Output Gets Slashed

Posted: 20 Nov 2011 12:32 PM PST

RAMPrices for DRAM have been dropping like a rock for months now, but last week the market research team over at the DRAMeXchange warned things were likely to get even worse. The problem is simple, far too much supply and not nearly enough demand. The problem has been further compounded by the flooding in Thailand, which as you've heard a million times by now, trickles over into just about every aspect of the PC industry. Lower prices are great for consumers, but we have to admit, we were starting to get a bit worried. DRAM manufacturers were already running on razor thin margins, and the low spot price for DDR3 threatened to push some of the smaller players out of the market completely. Short term gain for consumers yes, but it could end up causing long term pain as the competition thins out.

A solution is on the horizon however, and while it's far from ideal, it's better than a complete collapse.

In an attempt to help relieve oversupply issues in the channel, DRAM manufacturer Elpida announced it would be cutting production for at least one month, and possibly more if needed to help stabilize the market. The news as intended will no doubt help stabilize the market, but prices, at least in the short term will likely remain low. As of noon Friday the spot price for branded 2Gb DDR3 modules dropped 1% to US$0.73, while white-branded 2Gb sticks decreased by 2% to US$0.65.

So prices didn't skyrocket up based on the news, but they aren't likely to drop much farther either. If you've been planning on stocking up on DDR3 modules we suggest hitting up your e-tailer of choice sooner rather than later. Newegg is currently selling 16GB of brand name modules for under $75.

Post-apocalyptic car combat MMO developer interviewed

Darkwind: War on Wheels - cars blowing up real good
One-man dev teams aren't exactly unheard of thanks to Eskil Steenburg's Love MMO. One-man dev teams working on post-apocalyptic turn-based driving MMOs are pretty unique, though, and Sam Redfern has that particular market cornered.

Redfern is the brains (and everything else) behind Darkwind: War on Wheels, a free-to-play title based on the Torque engine that also mixes in a web interface for its social and economic gameplay. Rock, Paper, Shotgun recently caught up with Redfern and managed to ask a few burning questions.

Among the interesting tidbits is the fact that Darkwind has been in the works since 2005 and that the title currently boasts 220 subscribers. Redfern says most of these are heavily invested in the world. "It's not my game, it's the whole community's game. I think that's the reason a lot of them like it; if they want to, there's a good chance of influencing it. There's various ways they can add content," he explains.

The Daily Grind: Where would you take an MMO vacation?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2011 05:00 AM PST

You could always take a vacation on the Holoshed. Unless it broke down.
There are places in the world that are nice as a bit of a change from your usual living space, somewhere to get away from the day-to-day stresses of your life, but you certainly wouldn't want to actually live there. But there's no reason that should be exclusive to physical spaces, if you think about it. Maybe you have no real desire to ever stop playing EverQuest II as your main MMO, but it's still fun to occasionally dip your toes in the water of DC Universe Online once in a while.

MMOs are usually a commitment that lasts for a while, but sometimes you want something that will just last for the moment. So where would you like to take an MMO vacation? Is it an old game that you'd like to visit again? A new game that you haven't ever quite had the urge to play? Or a game you've heard things about that make it sound interesting but not a good full-time choice?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Perpetuum planning tourney, treasure hunt for first anniversary

Perpetuum - giant robot building thing
Perpetuum turns one year old this week, and the devs at Avatar Creations are celebrating in style. A new blog entry brings word of an anniversary weekend complete with a competitive PvP tournament and a not-so-competitive treasure hunt.

The tourney happens on the weekend of December 3rd, and it's open only to corporations (few solo players could afford the 10 million NIC entry fee anyway). In terms of format, the event is a 16-team ladder elimination affair, and the first 16 corporations to mail in their registration fee will be accepted (the deadline is November 27th).

If your group isn't up for bloodletting and robotic mayhem, you can join in the PvE treasure hunt and obtain plenty of loot rewards for your trouble. Check out the official Perpetuum website for more details and the full list of tourney rules.

The Mog Log: Fluffballs on parade

The Mog Log header by A. Fienemann
Despite what it might have seemed like, last week's column was not actually meant as a direct response to Final Fantasy XIV's announcement of class revisions. It was just a happy coincidence, really. I could go into more detail, of course, but I had already planned on talking about the eponym of the column, which I haven't done since I kicked the column off in the first place.

Moogles are ubiquitous in Final Fantasy XI, and while they're a bit rarer in Final Fantasy XIV they're still not a secret. This is understandable -- after all, the small little critters are part of the glue that holds the series together conceptually. So it's odd that when you get right down to it, they're only peripherally involved with the settings of the games they appear in. Despite the ubiquity of the moogles, it's debatable whether some of them are even there.

The Tattered Notebook: Five things not to miss from EQII's Heroes' Festival

        EQII fireworks
Once again, the Heroes' Festival has returned to Norrath. The event has only been around a couple of years, but it's a nice time to shoot off some fireworks and celebrate EverQuest II's seventh anniversary. It tends to get overshadowed, coming just on the heels of Nights of the Dead and just a few weeks before Frostfell. But the festival actually has several fun events and offers some of my favorite rewards in game.

In this week's Tattered Notebook, we'll look at some "don't miss" things from the Heroes' Festival -- from fireworks to flying band fliers!

Why Wario Land 4 Remains the Best Portable Mario Game

We're marking this overlooked spin-off's 10th anniversary by finally giving it its due.

By: Jeremy Parish November 19, 2011

With Super Mario 3D Land freshly delivered to the eager hands of gamers the world over, Nintendo's portable platformer legacy is at the front of many people's minds. Sure, 3D Land isn't as closely related to the old Super Mario Land games as its name would suggest, but that doesn't make it any less fun... even if it does err on the side of being a little too easy. Much as we've enjoyed 3D Land, though, it still isn't our favorite portable Mario game.

Admittedly, I'm using the royal "we" here, but I will cheerfully defend my claim that the best portable Mario game is the sublime Wario Land 4 for Game Boy Advance... which, by a handy coincidence, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this week. No, it doesn't star Mario, but it can trace its lineage directly to Super Mario Land, and that's good enough. Sadly, Wario Land 4 has never really commanded the loyal following and vocal praise it deserves. Launched in the early days of the GBA, it was generally overshadowed by Super Mario Advance and its sequel, despite the fact that (unlike those higher-profile titles) Wario's game was wholly original, built from the ground-up for the system. What better time than its decennial to right the wrongs of fickle gamers and properly canonize Wario Land 4? Chances are you overlooked this portable masterpiece when it was released. Well, here are 10 reasons you need to correct that mistake.

          1. It defies platform gaming conventions
