16 Movies That Predicted Technology Right

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 11:59 AM PDT

Back to the Future GlassesFlicks with a pulse on where technology was headed

You can yell, "Beam me up, Scotty!" all you want, the only thing that will happen is you'll elicit a bunch of bemused stares from passersby wondering if you've bonked your head recently. The sad fact is human teleportation devices don't yet exist in 2013, and even if they did, the tremendous lag would make it extraordinarily impractical. Such is the reality of science that it doesn't always mesh with our fantastic visions of fictional futures filled with flying cars and other implausible technologies. In other words, reality sucks compared to what we've grown up watching on television.

That doesn't mean Hollywood got it all wrong, however. Take a look around you and you'll notice quite a few inventions that not only don't suck, but some of which were predicted by movie makers decades ago. You can draw a parallel, for example, between swiping and gestures in Minority Report versus today's touchscreen computing and motion-controlled sensors like the Kinect. The further back you go in the movie archives, the more interesting these parallels become.

Join us as we look back at 16 films that, for the most part, correctly predicted future technologies in use today. What was your favorite science fiction movie? Let us know in the comments below!

Benchmarking Site Bans Windows 8 Results Over Broken Real Time Clock

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 11:28 AM PDT

Windows 8 ClockFaulty clock to blame

The world's most popular benchmarking and overclocking website is no longer accepting scores from PCs running Windows 8. Furthermore, HWBOT made the decision to invalidate all previous scores from Windows 8 systems. The reason? HWBot cites a flaw in Windows 8's real-time clock (RTC). In addition to making sure your computer displays the correct time, benchmarking applications also use the RTC.

"As the result of weekend-time research, the HWBOT staff has decided to invalidate all benchmark records established with the Windows 8 operating system. Due to severe validity problems with the Windows8 real time clock ('RTC'), benchmarks results achieved with Windows 8 cannot be trusted," HWBOT said. "The main problem lies with the RTC being affected when over- or underclocking under the operating system. The operating system uses the RTC as reference clock, and benchmarks use it to reference (benchmark) time."

The RTC provides a baseline for benchmarks, letting software know when a particular benchmark started and finished. HWBOT didn't provide too many technical details and itself is still sorting through it all, but at present, the site claims that if you change your CPU's base clock frequency in software, it can affect Windows 8's ability to keep accurate time, thereby throwing off benchmarking results.

These aren't minor miscalculations, either. According to HWBOT's testing, underclocking the base frequency by 6 percent can throw off the clock by 18 seconds after just 5 minutes have elapsed.

"Since this is all very new to the stall, we are still looking into the consequences and possible solutions for this problem," HWBOT said.

Gigabyte Launches G1.Sniper A88X, a Gaming Motherboard for Kaveri

Gigabyte G1.Sniper A88XGigabyte's first true AMD gaming motherboard

In anticipation of AMD's upcoming Kaveri launch, Gigabyte announced a line of new FM2+ motherboards, including a new addition to its G1-Killer range of gaming motherboards, the G1.Sniper A88X. According to Gigabyte, the A88X is the the company's first bona fide gaming motherboard for AMD users, though that's not the only unique thing about this board. It also sports some special audio characteristics.

In fact, Gigabyte spent the majority of its press release highlighting the A88X's audio, including two exclusive features. The first is a USB DAC-UP, a gold-plated USB 2.0 port that provides noise-free power delivery to your Digital-to-Analog Converter. And the second is Gain Boost, which provides onboard switches to select between 2.5x and 6x amplification modes depending on the output device.

USB DAC-UP

"We've had a lot of customer interest in expanding our G1-Killer gaming motherboard range to include an AMD platform model." commented Henry Kao, Vice President of GIGABYTE Motherboard Business Unit. "By also developing unique audio features that make a real difference to the overall experience, we're confident this board will be a real hit with gamers and audiophiles alike."

Other than audio goodies, Gigabyte was pretty short on details, making no mention of the other features, price, or release date.

Nokia Thinking Big with "Bandit," a Rumored 6-inch Windows Phone

Nokia Windows PhoneFirst Windows Phone phablet is in the works

Android's open platform inevitably leads to a wealth of designs, which is one of the reasons for its success. With Android, you can go big or small, fast or modest, and so forth. Microsoft's Windows Phone platform is almost the exact opposite, and certainly there are far fewer options for users to choose from. However, would-be Windows Phone shoppers hoping for a large size display may soon get their wish.

Nokia is said to be planning a 6-inch Windows Phone device codenamed Bandit. It would include a Full HD 1080p display (1920x1080) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor. According to The Verge, it's actually one of several planned 1080p Windows Phone devices currently in the works.

For shooting photos, it will feature at least a 20-megapixel rear-facing, which will require a small hump on the back of the device similar to the Lumia 925. Though it will be big, it will also be lightweight and come constructed of polycarbonate plastic.

12GB PlayStation 3A compelling Blu-ray player, if nothing else

If you have the money and patience to wait until this holiday shopping season, you can score Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 (PS4) console and rock some next-generation gaming into 2014 and beyond. Alternately, you could spend half as much on Sony's new flash-based 12GB PlayStation 3 (PS3) Slim system. Sony isn't making a big fuss over its low(er) cost console option, though it's not difficult to find.

The 12GB PS3 is being sold direct on Sony's website (temporarily out of stock at the time of this writing), along with places like Best Buy and Walmart. Game bundles are available, too.

It's an interesting value proposition, especially if you're already in the market for a Blu-ray player. For $200, you can play your Blu-rays, as well as access a rich catalog of games and streaming services via Ethernet or built-in Wi-Fi. it also comes with a wireless controller. Note that it does not, however, come with a vertical stand as depicted.

EVGA's Double BIOS Graphics Cards Offer Tinkerers a Safety Net

EVGA GTX 780Take a mulligan on overclocking gone bad

Wouldn't it be awesome if there were do-overs in everyday life like there are in some sports? That's pretty much what EVGA is offering through a line of graphics cards that now feature "Double BIOS," the marketing name for what's essentially a secondary BIOS in case you screw something up. It's also there to support experimentation with custom BIOSes, and should something go wrong, BIOS recovery is a flip of the switch away.

"Also, on select cards the secondary BIOS may unlock additional overclocking potential and/or improved fanspeed control," EVGA says.

EVGA offers several Nvidia GeForce video cards with dual BIOS chips ranging from the GeForce GTX 760 (02G-P4-3763-KR; coming soon) on up to the GTX 780 Classified HC (03G-P4-3789-KR).

Dual BIOS

To kick off the introduction of Dual BIOS graphics cards, EVGA is offering a giveaway consisting of two GeForce GTX 780, 770, and 760 cards. To enter, just fill out a simple form, cross your fingers, and wait until September 6, 2013, which is when the winners will be announced.

The Nexus Telegraph: The price of doing business in WildStar

A fantastic deal, it can't be beat!
Now we know what WildStar's business model is, and it's not any of the options I had predicted. That's to be expected, but it also means that we have to evaluate it very differently than if it had fallen into a tried-and-true pattern. You don't know how a new business model will work until you see it in action, and we haven't seen this in action yet.

The reality is that WildStar is a buy-to-play, subscription, and free-to-play title all at the same time, and that's without even dipping our toes into the muddy water of microtransactions. There's exactly one item to be bought in the cash shop, and it serves exactly one purpose, but it also opens up a complicated economic interplay that we've seen in only one other game. And I don't think we can just draw on that one game for comparison because they're just not the same.

GDC Online 2013: SOE talks game shutdowns, The Matrix Online

    Posted: 19 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

    The Matrix Online
Sony Online Entertainment's Linda "Brasse" Carlson took the stage at this year's GDC Online to talk about SOE's approach to community management, and in the process delivered a little insight into how studios can (and should) approach shutting down MMOs with waning or nonexistent player populations.

Carlson used Monolith Productions' The Matrix Online as an example, explaining that the game's population had dipped down to fewer than 500 players by the time the decision was made to take it offline in 2009.
The breaking point where cost of maintenance just to keep the game up was ridiculous. Sometimes you just have to shut these games down.
Determining when and how to sunset an MMO is never an easy task; Carlson noted that a studio should never "belittle the people who are deeply emotionally upset" about their favorite title shutting down.

The talk wasn't all about shutdowns, however; Carlson also discussed Sony's community management philosophy, which includes showing empathy to players, protecting developers from abuse, and using the player-driven community council to make more educated and agreeable decisions about the future of its games.

Gamasutra has a nice collection of quotes from the presentation, if you're into that sort of thing.

Veteran developer Kirk Black Kickstarting new kidsafe MMO
Oftentimes, Kickstarter is used by developers trying to break into MMOs. In the case of Enspira Online, however, it's a 20-year industry vet looking to bring his project to the market. Kirk "Runesabre" Black -- known for his roles as lead engineer and producer of Ultima Online, lead dev on Star Wars Galaxies, and more -- has been creating a non-violent, kid-safe game geared for the younger MMO players.

Players in Enspira Online are challenged with reviving and tending the magnificent gardens of the Gnomes, who have been imprisoned by spiders. On top of this, players can build personal islands, own a home, and explore the world by boat for more adventures. Black's goal is to provide a vehicle for kids to experience and learn valuable life lessons like helping others in need and investing in themselves while having fun in game.

Enspira Online is currently in internal alpha testing, and the Kickstarter campaign is to facilitate closed beta. For a look at the game, check out the video after the break.

WildStar announces hybrid business model and new 2014 release window

        Please sell things at me!
There are players out there right now who would happily spend money on WildStar but don't know how or when. Obviously you can't spend money on WildStar right now; the game isn't out yet and won't be until spring 2014, we've just learned, so there's nothing to spend money on yet. But even when it does get released, how will anyone be able to tell the people at Carbine Studios to shut up and take our money?

Wonder no longer because the game's business model has finally been revealed to the world. No more lying awake wondering how you'll be able to pay for the game (something you really shouldn't be lying awake wondering about anyhow). So is it buy-to-play? Free-to-play? Subscription-based? Yes. It's all three at the same time, if you look at it from the right angles.

How does it manage that? Well, you have to understand how C.R.E.D.D. works -- starting with what in the world it is.

The Daily Grind - How much time do you spend on MMOs each day?I was looking at a list of Fall game releases the other day and salivating over some of the open-world titles coming over the next couple of months. We've got Saints Row IV this week, Grand Theft Auto V and its GTA Online component in September, and the latest Assassin's Creed offering a month after that. And that's just the AAA stuff.

I'm not sure how I'm going to fit those games and several others into a schedule that's already bursting at the seams, and I haven't even started talking about the MMOs I'm playing yet! Anyway, that leads into today's Daily Grind question. How much time do you find in a typical day to play MMOs?

              Forge going free-to-play
If you're a PvP fan and you still haven't checked out Forge, you're plumb out of excuses. Dark Vale recently announced that the fantasy title is converting to a free-to-play business model after approximately nine months as a buy-to-play game with an up-front client cost.

Dark Vale's announcement post reiterates its desire to avoid pay-to-win pitfalls, and it highlights the fact that all of Forge's cash shop items will be cosmetic. The company is acting on feedback from both fans and "F2P experts," and it plans to offer a selection of Steam starter packs as well as a range of item prices. "We also want to take into account the time it takes to play Forge to unlock some of these items," the company says. "For example, The Kaldrhiti Armor takes around 800 games to unlock. It's hard to put a price on your time playing Forge, but we don't want to de-value it. So, this will obviously be a higher priced more exclusive item."

EVE Evolved: Does EVE Online have the world's largest MMO map?

              Posted: 18 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT

EVE Evolved Does EVE Online have the world's largest MMO map
MMO game worlds seem to be getting larger every year, and the debate over which is biggest frequently appears on forums and blogs. It usually starts with people breaking out infographics comparing the size of the various islands and continents in their favourite fantasy MMOs, and it escalates from there. World of Warcraft's Azeroth turns out to be surprisingly small at an estimated 80 square miles, while World War II Online claims to have the largest MMO game map in the world with over 300,000 square kilometers (115,831 square miles) of playable space modeled as a half scale map of Western Europe.

Someone in the discussion will inevitably mention EVE Online, and that's when things get complicated. The New Eden star cluster is lightyears across, and its 7,699 accessible solar systems have earned it a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, but can EVE's map even be compared to accessible landmass in a fantasy MMO? All of the space between stars is currently empty and inaccessible, and players warp between points of interest within a solar system without interacting with any of the space in between. With that and the relative difference in scale between EVE and land-based games, it isn't immediately clear whether EVE Online still has the world's largest playable MMO map.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at how empty space works under the hood in EVE Online and crunch some numbers to find out whether it really does have the biggest playable game world.

If you're looking for a preview of Star Wars: The Old Republic's 2.4 patch, look no further than the preliminary test server notes. We say "preliminary" due to the bold, red-letter font that BioWare uses to remind players of the temporary nature of test server patch notes.

Current highlights include active four-vs.-four warzone arenas which feature small-scale PvP and a last-team-standing best-of-three format. BioWare has also removed eight-vs.-eight ranked warzones from the ranked warzone queue. Finally, the patch includes a number of class and crew skill tweaks as well as an adjustment to daily and weekly PvP missions that removes the win component in favor of a participation component.
