Grading Ubisoft's E3 2017 press conference

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 03:30 PM PDT

Last year, Ubisoft's press conference was interminable. It was seven hundred hours long with absolutely no games. Steep, a tech demo for extreme sports, was the highlight, second only to it ending. It happens. Sometimes you don't have anything good to talk about. In the case of EA this lasts years at a time.

Ubisoft had an absolutely killer presentation. It started with that Mario x Rabbids game, which we clowned on hard when it leaked, but every minute we saw of it sold us more and more. And that was before I realized it's literally XCOM. Now I have to buy a fucking Switch!

Then there was a new The Crew that introduces a ton more vehicle types and basically looks like what the first game should've been. It could be a lot of fun. And we only had to sit through a little bit of Assassin's Creed since Microsoft debuted it. And then there was a new game, Skull and Bones, a pirate game with Assassin's Creed sailing tech. It might not end up being great, but seeing something new was nice.

Everything kind of evened out until Beyond Good and Evil 2, which actually fucking exists! It looks incredible! Fantastic opener and fantastic kicker. That's press conference 101. Press conference 102 is not making us have to sit through The Dvision garbage. Good job, Ubisoft.

And make sure to stay tuned 'til the end of the video for a surprise appearance.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero's DLC gets a little Risky

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:50 PM PDT

Amidst the chaos Sony's E3 conference, Wayforward let loose the reveal trailer for the upcoming DLC expansion to Shantae: Half-Genie Hero called Pirate Queen's Quest. It looks like the story will run parallel to the events of the main game and have players control Risky (a series first) as she steals the Dynamo from Shantae.

Here are some of PlayStation's E3 games up on Amazon

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:26 PM PDT

PlayStation's E3 press conference was all about the games. Not a huge departure for Sony, but always good to see. That Spider-Man video was particularly encouraging, I think.

Anyway, a bunch of it went up on Amazon. Do what you will.

Everything that happened at Sony's E3 2017 press conference

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:10 PM PDT

Guys, as our own Jordan Devore put it -- "how is Ubisoft winning E3 so far?"!

Sony had some great stuff for us tonight. We got Monster Hunter World, but that's also coming to PC and Xbox One. We got a lot of old footage, vague confirmations like the fact that Gran Turismo Sport will run at 4K and 60FPs in an attempt to take the wind out of the Xbox One X's sails, and so forth. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, a game people already forgot about in favor of that new Dragon Ball Z fighter, has a story demo out today.

But Shadow of Colossus is getting a remake! I have mixed emotions, so much so that I struggled to come up with a fancy modifier in the header. I liked it. But I wanted that moment. Where I wake my friends up and tell them that Final Fantasy VII is getting a remake, or that a Bloodborne sequel is real. I didn't get it, but Beyond Good and Evil 2 at Ubisoft and Monster Hunter World (which doesn't look at all like a clone or port) have approached that level.

Nintendo is left! Good night and see you tomorrow.

Spider-man looks similar to Arkham Asylum and that's fine

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:04 PM PDT

Call me a cynic all you want, but I was not impressed with Spider-man on PS4. It just looks way too similar to games I can already play, namely the Arkham series. That is fine, though, as I'm sure most people will get a kick out of having a not crappy combat system in a Spider-man game for once.

Dr. Avery is leading the robot revolution in Detroit: Become Human

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:01 PM PDT

I've had this feeling before with Detroit: Become Human. When it was first revealed, I was like, "That's Jennifer Lawrence, right?" It wasn't, or at least it wasn't supposed to be. With this new trailer, I had to call my wife over and ask her opinion. "Is that Dr. Avery?" We think so.

Detroit: Become Human is looking like the most ambitious Quantic Dream game yet. The trailer showed off the studio's expected branching pathways, but it's looking like there's more game in there too, with heist planning, puzzles, and maybe even some light action.

Destiny 2 looks pretty darn cinematic compared to the first

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:58 PM PDT

Destiny 2 is releasing two days earlier than previously announced, on September 6 rather than September 8 for consoles. PC gets it on October 24.

I never got around to playing the first Destiny, despite initial hype due to Bungie's great gun-play. But after hearing so much of a lack of story and that it's a quasi-mmo grind-fest, I just never gave it shot. It seems like they are really addressing the story concerns bit this time around, including some fine cinematic in this new trailer.

Be a godly daddy when God of War releases early next year

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:46 PM PDT

When we first saw the new take on God of War last year, I wasn't really sure how to accept the new direction but now after seeing a bit of gameplay at Sony's E3 press conference, I'm all in.

You can't doubt how fantastic this looks, and I can't wait to use my viking god powers to teach my son about my crazy greek god past while I gracefully paddle boat around the world showing off my new, grizzled dad beard.

The Until Dawn developer is also making a shooter called Bravo Team

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:45 PM PDT

Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games has a new game called The Inpatient, and that's the studio's main E3 news. But, it's not its only E3 news. There's another game.

Also revealed at PlayStation's E3 press conference is something called Bravo Team. The short clip made it seem like a pray and spray shooter in VR. It's uh, gun-y.

Also, "bravo, team" is what I'm gonna say to the Dtoid Squad once we make it through all these pressers.

Fievel goes into virtual reality with Moss

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:44 PM PDT

Polyarc announced a virtual reality game at Sony's E3 2017 conference, Moss. You play as a small white mouse white enormous ears but I still went with the Fievel reference because Stuart Little and that Matthew Broderick-ass mouse are both punks.

It's a third person action platformer that looks very cute. We'll add the trailer into this post when Sony uploads its damn YouTube.

EDIT: Wait, here we go. And here's more info from the YouTube: "Quill, a young mouse with dreams of greatness, is called on an epic journey. Together, you'll travel to forgotten realms, solve challenging puzzles, and battle menacing enemies. Only with your unique abilities will she prevail—immerse yourself in the world of Moss to help write the story of a hero in the making."

Star Child is an upcoming sci-fi sidescroller for PS VR

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:42 PM PDT

During Sony's E3 presentation, the company announced an upcoming sci-fi sidescroller for the PlayStation VR titled Star Child.

The game will be developed by Playful and published by GameTrust, which was previously responsible for Song of the Deep and Has-Been Heroes.

While there is no confirmed release date for the game at this point in time, or any announcement of it being on any other platforms, the trailer shown during the E3 presentation did at least give us a glimpse of its gameplay and its art style. Given my love of this sort of sci-fi aesthetic, I have to say that I'm kind of curious to see how this one shapes up.

Monster of the Deep is a Final Fantasy XV fishing game for PSVR

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:39 PM PDT

Finally, we can crack open a cold one with the boys in VR. And not just any boys -- the FFXV boys!

Announced at Sony's E3 press conference, Square Enix is doing a virtual reality fishing game spinoff of Final Fantasy XV, dubbed Monster of the Deep, and it's due out this September for PlayStation VR.

It's so goddang dumb, I love it.

I'm so ready to return to WW2 in Call of Duty: World War II

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:36 PM PDT

Call of Duty: World War II's new E3 trailer looks nice, featuring anti-air guns, dropping bombs from planes, flamethrowers, and locations such as Crimea and the English channel. There is a new "Divisions" feature where players choose from one of five division, "each with their own specialized training and weapons skills." In a new mode called War Mode "players must works as a team and fight for control through multiple strategic objectives."

There's been a ton of futuristic and modern shooters in recent years, but I still prefer the ones set in World War II. This new multiplayer trailer has me extra excited to finally get a modern return to the series' roots. I'm particularly excited to invade Normandy. War games are always more interesting when based in reality than made up.

Until Dawn developer is working on the unsettling, VR 'Inpatient'

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:34 PM PDT

So uh, more PSVR games! Today during their E3 press conference, Supermassive Games showed off Inpatient, a new VR game that has an unsettling tone and an even more unsettling name. It evidently takes place in the same world as Until Dawn, too.

It's one of what is to be a long line of VR thrillers, and I'm super excited for this brave new era. I couldn't get through parts of Resident Evil 7 without taking my helmet off for a breather.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim VR is another way to play a six year old game

As if Skyrim on Switch, Skyrim for Elder Scrolls: Legends and paid mods for Skyrim on PS4, Xbox One and PC wasn't enough Skyrim for 2017, Sony's E3 conference had a quick trailer for Skyrim VR present. Whether this game remains an exclusive has yet to be determined, but it will be heading to PSVR sometime this year.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has a story demo out like RIGHT NOW

At Sony's E3 presser, the platform holder let loose a barrage of trailers. One of the first was for the long-awaited Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite (we'll have that here as soon as it's available). But the big news that matters to fans right now is the story demo available today. Like, you might be able to turn on your console right now and start downloading it.

Go go go! Check back here for the trailer once you've got the download all queued up.

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:26 PM PDT

Capcom debuted a new Monster Hunter at Sony's E3 press conference. Monster Hunter World is coming early 2018 to PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC version "coming at a later date."

The trailer featured lush jungle environments with slithering, screeching dinos and wider open vistas. I loved seeing the dude throwing the ghille suit to stealth attack a 30-foot dino. The hookshot was pretty badass too.

Oh yeah, Days Gone has a shitload of zombies

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:24 PM PDT

Last year, Sony introduced us to Days Gone, a zombie game with a lot of zombies. Like, so many zombies on the screen. All of them not happy with how undead you are.

It took a while to get there this year, but Days Gone still has a lot of zombies. At first, it's just biker guy surrounded by a lot of bad stuff. Wolves eating a body, a scuffle with a roughneck. But then, boom! Lots of zombies.

And zombie humans are one thing. Zombie bear is another.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy has some new footage to kick off Sony's E3

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:16 PM PDT

So uh, Sony! They started off E3 with a broken stream where the audio didn't kick in until 10 minutes or so, and a pretty kick ass band with a citar.

All that fanfare was to set up Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, the sequel/standalone expansion for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. It's still coming on August 22 for PS4, but for now you can check out some extra story bits.

Sony says it'll clock in at roughly 10 hours.

Horizon Zero Dawn's story expansion is The Frozen Wilds

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 01:13 PM PDT

Coming into E3, I had just started playing Horizon Zero Dawn. Coming home from E3, I'll be doing more of the same. Such is the life of us robot dinosaur trappers.

Guerrilla Games is working on a story expansion, as previously discussed, and now we know the theme: snow! And many other nice things we can't get a sense of in this all-too-brief E3 2017 trailer, presumably. I'm probably down for it, all the same.

It won't be long until we can finally relive the glory of Naughty Dog's early years, but that hasn't stopped Activision from unleashing one final nostalgia bomb on us. While we don't see anything new about the N. Sane Trilogy from this trailer, it definitely brings a wave of memories from my childhood. Gaming used to be a lot simpler.

According to both a trailer released by the publisher during the pre-show, and as corroborated by the official PlayStation Twitter account, the shooter will be available for purchase on the 15th of August this year.

Why was this Halo Wars 2 DLC not at Microsoft's E3 conference?

For some bizarre reason, Microsoft has decided to unveil a trailer for the new Halo Wars 2 DLC titled, "Awakening the Nightmare" tonight. Why this was absent from their E3 conference yesterday is anyone's guess (maybe they are trying to steal thunder from Sony?), but this DLC will feature a new campaign, two new multiplayer leaders, two new multiplayer maps and a new cooperative mode. It also features the return of the flood (oh joy.........).

Sony is still trying to make Knack happen, sequel is set for September

So uh, Sony seems to have yet another jam-packed conference, because they're giving us a ton of details before the show is even underway. Revealed by way of a simple tweet, Knack 2 is coming on September 5 and will be priced at $39.99.

Billed as the next big thing Knack failed to set the world on fire in 2013, but Sony is trying yet again with the sequel -- this time hoping co-op will attract a bigger audience. I liked it better as a running joke than a thing that's actually happening.

Gran Turismo Sport will run in 4K at 60fps this fall

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 12:46 PM PDT

Moments prior to Sony's E3 press conference, a couple of Gran Turismo Sport trailers were uploaded which reveal that the game is scheduled for release worldwide in Fall 2017. Not to be outdone by Forza Motorsport 7, it will run in 4k resolution at 60 frames per second.

I've been catching up on racing games the past several months, except for these two series. Gran Turismo 4 took a considerable chunk of my time when it released on PlayStation 2. I hope Sport can steal me away again.

Come watch PlayStation's E3 press conference with us!

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 12:30 PM PDT

It may not feel like it, but we're closing in on the proper beginning of E3. It technically started on Saturday afternoon, but that was just pre-E3 stuff. Sony's set to take the stage in its usual spot, the last presser before the convention opens up on Tuesday (Nintendo's Direct-thing notwithstanding.)

What is PlayStation up to this year? It's gotta be games, right? Sony launched three pieces of PlayStation hardware in three months last year, so don't expect anything like that to happen again. Instead, the focus will be on already-announced things like God of War, Spider-Man, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. But, I'd wager there's a good amount of new games to keep the excitement high.

The biggest bombshell? If Sony announced we can change our PSN IDs. You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.

There's only one way to find out: Watch this thing with us. If starts at 6pm Pacific, 30 minutes from when this post goes live. Express your happiness/disappointment/cynicism/elation/etc. in the comments below. Let it all out.

Need for Speed Payback will run at 4K and 30 FPS on Xbox One X

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 12:25 PM PDT

According to Need for Speed Payback producer Jeremy Chubb, Payback will run at 1080p with a 30 FPS framerate on the standard Xbox One and PS4 models, and 4K with a 30 FPS framerate on Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro.

It's unclear if these benchmarks exist because the game has to hit parity across Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, since Microsoft's flagship racer Forza Motorsport 7 can hit 4K/60 on the Xbox One X. Need for Speed Payback is apparently being developed with the upgraded consoles in mind, so it's possible that Ghost Games will not be taking full advantage of the Xbox One X.

We'll update this story as it develops.

Xbox One X seems great if you have a killer home theater setup

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 11:30 AM PDT

A month before E3, I booked a semi-mystery appointment for Project Scorpio on the day after it'd be revealed to the world. I didn't know the structure of the meeting (interview, hands-on, presentation, etc.), just that Scorpio, now Xbox One X, would be the focus. There's no doubt that it's one of the show's more important assignments, regardless of how it'd go down.

Seated with 20-some other writers, we were shown a theater presentation for Xbox One X. It kicked off with a reiteration of the details that were revealed at the press conference, and then we saw brief overviews of Minecraft, Gears of War 4, and Forza Motorsport 7.

And it all looked great. Of course it looked great. Remember that this was a tightly-controlled environment, and anything less than great would be unacceptable based on the principles that this console is selling itself on. We were told again (multiple times, actually) that the Xbox One X is doing native 4K at 60 frames per second.

That's what was weird about this appointment. Usually these things are meant to supplement what we already know. This one felt like it was designed to reinforce what we already know. Like it was an effort to convince us that the product works, which, yeah, that makes sense. Media approval helps drive pre-orders, right?

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT's gameplay looks pretty busy

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 11:16 AM PDT

IGN had an exclusive reveal of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT in action, and for those who haven't seen footage of the arcade release or aren't familiar with the PSP titles, it's definitely going to take some getting used to.

While the hub, and general fighting style, have always been on a learning curve, these gameplay videos definitely seem a bit worrying. The 3-on-3 gameplay is neat in concept, but that hub is ridiculous. It's gorgeous to watch when it's not cluttered, of course, but just

Regardless, I'm still playing it day one.

Super Lucky's Tale is one delightful 3D platformer

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 11:00 AM PDT

I would call Super Lucky's Tale a pleasant surprise -- and for some, especially those who missed the original game on Oculus Rift, it will be -- but I came in expecting a charming, well-polished 3D platformer with a cute little protagonist. And that's just what I got! The E3 preview build for this notably non-VR sequel (it's headed to Xbox One and Windows 10 in November) was my first highlight of the show.

Microsoft had a bunch of other games from its press conference (Forza Motorsport 7, Crackdown 3, Ashen) at today's hands-on showcase event, but Super Lucky's Tale of all things was what did it for me. Seconds into starting, I was double jumping, tail whipping, and digging tunnels like a mole, collecting coins along the way. The camera kept up well throughout and the character handling immediately felt great.

In short: if this trailer speaks to you, you're gonna have a good time with this game.

An early portion had me gathering golem heads and bringing them back to their bodies, with hidden collectibles scattered about, while a later underground section involved navigating differently-patterned streams of fireballs. Things capped off with a gauntlet of enemies. Brett randomly showed up midway through, forced his way onto my seat, and pried the controller from my hands. He dug the game too!

Was it groundbreaking? No. Definitely not. But that wasn't my expectation coming in (or what I necessarily want out of this type of game). Everything just felt right, though. I would've kept playing if I could -- a good sign at an always-moving, never-enough-time show like E3. We've got another platformer to watch this year.

Ubisoft's E3 stuff is up on Amazon, including Mario + Rabbids

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 10:10 AM PDT

Ubisoft had two real surprises at this year's E3 press conference. The first is that Mario + Rabbids is an XCOM-like turn-based tactical game. The second is that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is actually getting made. A cool surprise on the front end of the presser, a bombshell on the tail end.

Most of that is up on Amazon for pre-order if you're into that sort of thing. Of course, Beyond Good & Evil is the main exception to that statement. (Skull and Bones too, I guess.) But the bulk of the other big titles are live, and the links are all below.

Gundam Versus reveals Gundam Virtue as pre-order DLC for Japan

It's not known at this time if Virtue will come with any other bonuses, however it is known when it will be available in Japan after launch and for how much. Virtue will be released to the public in late July and will run the price of 602 Yen, which is approximately 5.49 American Dollars, which will likely be the price of the previously announced Barbatos Lupus as well which will also release in the same window.

The Xbox One X has power to spare even when running Forza at 4K, 60FPS

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:30 AM PDT

This week marks the one-year anniversary since the Xbox Scorpio (now Xbox One X) was revealed at E3 2016. In the past year, Microsoft has regularly teased how powerful this machine would be, but mostly in terms like "six teraflops" and "60Hz rendering." Everyone knows those specs are impressive, but it's tough to quantify how that translates to running games. We're basically just told that the games run well.

In a behind closed doors presentation with Microsoft, we were given a statistic that seems particularly impressive. Forza Motorsport 7 content director John Wendl told us that there's a 30 percent surplus on the GPU, even when running the game at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. That's surprisingly not-close to the Xbox One X's limits.

The coming months will probably be full of claims like this. Like with PS4 Pro's enhancements, everyone will want to explain how and why their games run better on the new hardware. But, as we collectively find out more and more about Xbox One X, this is another interesting anecdote that sheds just a little more light on what Microsoft's new console is capable of.

Everything that happened at Ubisoft's surprisingly not cringey E3 2017 press conference

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:15 AM PDT

What do you do when you need to inject your conference with more joy? Call Nintendo.

Ubisoft led their show today with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and it kind of set the tone. From there we got more footage of known stuff like Assassin's Creed: Origins and Far Cry 5, as well as good new reveals like The Crew 2, and a bombshell in Beyond Good and Evil 2.

It wasn't bad! In fact I'd put it squarely into the "I enjoyed it" category. Yet, the name of the game for this year's E3? "Safe." Most of what we've seen has been sequel related (or in Rabbids' case joining two well known IPs) -- hell, Bethesda's entire conference was based on established IPs. I'm still holding out hope that Sony and Nintendo will give us something we haven't seen before.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is the closest we've come to a "wow" moment at E3, but for a lot of you I think it already crossed that line -- it was a nice end to a nice conference. Ubisoft as the frontrunner of E3? Who would have thought?

Not a drill, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is actually happening

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:08 AM PDT

I really can't believe it. The absolutely gorgeous looking prequel to the fan favorite Beyond Good and Evil, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is set before the birth of Jade and apparently "will amaze all the gamers."

There's no release date as of yet, but I'm sure this trailer will tide us over for a while. Given the fact fans have waited for close to fifteen years, and enough emotion therein to bring Michel Ancel to tears, this project is going to deliver something. Let's hope that's actually a good something since we don't have much beyond the CG. I'm really curious as to how it plays for sure.

But the fact that it actually exists is beyond good enough for now.

First Far Cry 5 gameplay is all about the boom boom boom

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:08 AM PDT

You can have a dog in Far Cry 5. His name is boomer and he looks to be some kind of cattle dog. What a good, white-nationalist-cult-killing boy!

Far Cry 5's Dan Hay also got a big round of applause for saying "fucking."

That's kind of appropriate because, for a game with a serious setting -- a "fanatical doomsday cult cut off from the rest of the world" -- it's at its core a Far Cry game in the style of 3, 4, and their spinoffs. Which means open world insanity, co-op, crazy animal attacks. Just a lot of boom, boom, boom.

Down for more Steep? There's an expansion this December

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:08 AM PDT

How do you expand on Steep? You go to the Olympics! Step off, Mario and Sonic.

The open-ended snowboarding and skiing title gets its first expansion, Road to the Olympics, on December 5 ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics. I couldn't get into the core game's handling but I do like the "open mountain" concept in theory.

With the expansion, Ubisoft is adding sports like halfpipe, slalom, and skicross.

Ubisoft's new space game is No Man's Skylanders

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:00 AM PDT

Ubisoft Toronto is at the helm of the publisher's new toys-to-life title. It's a space game called Starlink: Battle for Atlas, where you travel to a bunch of unique planets.

That is why the Dtoid E3 War Room immediately dubbed this No Man's Skylanders. I'm sure a bunch of other internet folks simultaneously and independently also made this joke. We take the layups when we can get them.

Anyway, Starlink is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and Switch in fall of 2018. There's plenty of time to figure out the scope of this project. A good idea would probably be to not over-promise.

New Just Dance 2018 to add some K-pop, Miku to the mix

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:59 AM PDT

In a dance move that everyone expected, Ubisoft busts out their new Just Dance 2018 announcement with some Tron-esque Mortal Kombat dancers. Their E3 presentation also featured short snippet of "Bubble Pop", a K-pop song from Korean Pop star Hyuna. This new genre addition is more than just when "Gangnam Style" first showed up on a previous Just Dance. K-pop is one of those growing popular music genres that is pretty big not just in Asia, but also in South America.

Another addition to the songlist of the latest and top pop music of Just Dance 2018 is virtual idol Hatsune Miku with her song "Love Ward", further broadening the audience to lovers of Japanese pop music and waifus.

Just Dance 2018 will be out this October 26, 2017 for all consoles, including the original Wii and the new Nintendo Switch.

Check out the trailer below!

South Park is getting in on the mobile game racket with 'Phone Destroyer'

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:50 AM PDT

Ubisoft had two South Park announcements for us today.

In addition to Fractured But Whole footage we also got word that Phone Destroyer," a new mobile game is on the way. It's set to hit the scene this year, and will deal with typical phone game conventions like card-based combat.

That's all we really know right now! Hopefully it'll have the signature South Park charm intact. They did such an amazing job of making Stick of Truth feel like a real extension of the show -- like it was an extended film.

Elijah Wood can now creep you out in VR with Transference

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:42 AM PDT

Announced during Ubisoft's E3 conference is Transference, a game we didn't see much of but I'm pretty into it. With a concept trailer outlining its Get Out, Black Mirror-esque premise of changing lives and generally just changing your entire world, I'm all in.

Starting as a standard press conference interview with the company "Spectrevision," it eventually gives way to super creepy scenery with folks strapped in chairs. If anyone can devote themself 100% to a super kooky project, it's Elijah Wood.

At least there was some Wood this year.

Skull and Bones is a tactical action pirate game from Ubisoft

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:41 AM PDT

While Assassin's Creed moves on to Egypt, the Black Flag strain of Ubisoft -- Ubisoft Singapore -- is returning to piracy with a new series set in 1721, Skull and Bones. The debut trailer featured something close to that ridiculous Pirates of the Caribbean slow-motion destruction scene.

I guess Sea of Thieves shouldn't have taken so long to come out. The second clip, embedded below, is a little less self-serious, showing off the multiplayer and an evolution of the very impressive ship captain'ing that was a surprise high point in Assassin's Creed III. And it's not just blowing opponents out of the water -- you get to board other boats and wreck house.

Also there is an enormous kraken, of course.

You can sign up for the beta here. Skull and Bones is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2018.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole isn't cancelled!

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:39 AM PDT

The eternally delayed South Park: The Fractured But Whole is not getting cancelled! Many fans thought that Ubisoft may have canned the game after various delays, but this seemingly final trailer confirms the October 17 release date. That is a sigh of relief, since I liked the first one a lot.

The Crew 2 looks like everything it needed to be

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:37 AM PDT

Among my game-playing friends, I feel like the only one who stuck with The Crew long enough to fall in love with it. The story was slow-going and the cars didn't handle quite right until you grinded up your stats, but the potential was there. The drive-across-America open-map design was exquisite when the stars aligned and you got to drive coast to coast with a group of strangers on a whim.

The Crew 2 looks like more of that, but just plain better in that triple-A sequel sort of way. Ubisoft clearly realized that exploring a scaled-down United States was what won players over, and it's emphasizing that for the sequel with not just cars and bikes, but boats and even planes.

This is a world I want to explore (again!), and I think I'll be able to convince folks to join me this time around. Ubisoft is calling the map a "fully redesigned USA."

Story-wise, we're going to "join four different motorsports families from around the country: street and pro racers, off-road experts, and freestylers. They’ll hook you up with new rides, and they’ll introduce you to their own unique motorsports culture and set of disciplines. Through competitions and chance encounters, find and hone your personal style, collect and customize your dream rides, show them off in your HQ, and make your mark on the entire US motorsports scene."

The Crew 2 is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One in early 2018, with a beta beforehand.

Ubisoft shows us a different side of Assassin's Creed: Origins

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:32 AM PDT

It's only officially two days revealed, but Ubisoft just gave us our second look at Assassin's Creed: Origins

This one was wildly different than what we saw yesterday. During Xbox's press conference, we got gameplay. We got the stabbing and whatnot, but we also got a peek at the systems behind this Assassin's Creed. It's not what the series has traditionally churned out.

Today, was all about a stylish trailer. It's something that sells Egypt as a setting -- lots of wild animals and gorgeous environment shots. It serves a different purpose, but an equally important one.

I, for one, am into it. For now, anyway. We should see Assassin's Creed: Origins in more detail this week at E3. We'll have more thorough impressions later on.

Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle will utilize figures, but not Amiibo

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 08:27 AM PDT

Ubisoft's worst kept secret was revealed today, and we found out that Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a nice looking, simplified version of X-com. We also found out that the title will have NFC (Near-Field Communication) support for toy figures, but surprisingly, these won't be official, Nintendo branded amiibo. A leaked image shows pictures of the figures, coming soon to retailers.

The figures will come separately and are fairly pricey. You can see photos of each in the gallery below.
