Sharkoon Releasing Budget-Priced WPM V2 Power Supplies

Posted: 16 Feb 2014 01:20 PM PST

Power supplies at lower prices

Sharkoon, a popular name for budget-priced peripherals and hardware, has announced a new series of power supplies for those of us looking to save a few bucks. The WPM V2 series units feature a cable management system and are equippped with one 6-pin and one 6+2-pin PCIe connector. The power supplies will come built with power delivery envelopes that range between 400 W to 700 W and house a 140 mm fan.

These power supplies will also come built with a semi-modular cable interface and do not feature 80-Plus certification, so those looking for a more permanent solution might want to save a little more cash before beginning the search for a replacement supply.

These begin at €39.99, which is roughly $55, which is a little pricey considering what other devices you could find in around the same neighborhood, but if you're willing to give the units a try, you can check out the official Sharkoon page for more information.

"TheMoon" Worm Infecting Linksys Routers

Posted: 16 Feb 2014 01:06 PM PST

Your Linksys router could be vulnerable

As if worrying about your PC and smartphones weren't enough, now you've got to go on the defensive when it comes to your wireless routers. According to reports from the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Center (ISC), customers out of a Wyoming ISP have reported compromised Linksys routers. The culprit? Malware known only as "TheMoon," malicious software that first compromises Linksys routers and then scans for other devices that may very well be vulnerable.

The affected models appear to be only E1000 and E1200, but updates at the Internet Storm Center have revealed a more specific list of models that could be vulnerable: E4200, E3200, E3000, E2500, E2100L, E2000, E1550, E1500, E1200, E1000, and E900.

The worm's primary goal is simply spreading, saturating what bandwidth is currently available. The worm will connect to port 8080 to retrieve features and firmware information, then sends exploits to a specific CGI script on the router that does not require authentication. Then a shell script request will launch as the router that's already been infected will scan for other routers it can touch. The worm itself is a 2 MB file, but it has a list of about 670 networks that are tied to cable modems in different countries. If you've got one of these routers, you might want to take special care.

More information can be found at Ullrich's blog at ISC.

Google Enhances Chrome Speed With Background Javascript Compilation

Posted: 16 Feb 2014 12:26 PM PST

Concurrent compliation means smoother sailing

On Thursday, Google announced a tweak made in the latest Chrome beta as a performance-booster: concurrent compliation. In the past, Chrome relied on JavaScript compliation on the main thread, but it could and did hinder the actual application. Concurrent compliation offloads this phase, making sure JavaScript apps perform steadily, only in the background.

The resulting performance is a lot smoother, as V8, Chrome's JavaScript engine, holds off on JavaScript functions until the last second before they're compiled. This type of coding helps to avoid frame drops, stuttering, and chugging in games and other applications. This improvement and more is all included in the Chrome 33 beta, and can be accessed when the stable version is finally release in late February or March.

For graphs and further information about what this change means for Chrome users, check out The Next Web's report.

Rise and Shiny: Inferno Legend

This week's game was a giant gamble, one that I should have known would not have worked out at all. The problem is that I have this crazy inborn optimism that tells me that even though many MMOs look and play the same way, you never know how they truly play until you actually play them. I've literally played hundreds of MMOs for this job and probably a hundred or so before that, so I've seen my share of games that look one way and play the other.

So this week I decided to go ahead and roll in Inferno Legend, a new MMO by GameBox, even though it appeared to be an auto-player like League of Angels from a few weeks ago and other titles before that. I picked my character from five different classes: the Cyclops, Vampire, Samurai, Faerie, and Mummy. I barely got past the incredibly bad voice-acting that was presumably supposed to add life to the characters and popped into the game.

    One Shots: Guard whacked!

    Ultima Online
According to Massively Law, which is as unshakable as it is awesome, if you send in screenshots from an MMO that was made during the Clinton presidency, then I'm required to feature them as a header for this column. Hence, Ultima Online.

This picture comes from reader Azzura, who found out the hard way that not everyone likes a bad guy. "This is my 'red' character, one that I used to player-kill (PK) with, strolling near town," he said. "The NPCs did not like my being around and were calling the guards on me to get me 'guard whacked'."

I mourn not for thee, but I shall be entertained by thy photographic memorial. Smite that "continue reading" button, readers, and feast thine eyes upon the glory of our community.

The Daily Grind: What 'famous' NPCs were a thrill to meet?

      DDO
Some of us who are perhaps more deeply invested in particular game worlds and lore tend to have a strong reaction when meeting the more famous members of the NPC cast. Perhaps it's a big name from another game in the series, a character that was prominently featured on the box art, or even a person who is synonymous with the franchise as a whole. Sometimes it's just a character that all of your friends have talked up and you're only getting to meet now.

I've certainly witnessed friends geeking out when they finally got to meet, say, Arthas or Gollum for the first time in a game. When I went back for a super-brief visit to Dungeons and Dragons Online, I felt a little shiver at bumping into Elminster in the newer content.

So what famous NPCs were a thrill to meet in the game -- and did you ask for their autograph?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

If you've logged in to use Kickstarter, perhaps to support an up-and-coming MMO, then pay attention: earlier today, the site reported to users that it was hacked this past week and customer data was accessed.

In a security notice posted on the site, Kickstarter said that it was notified by authorities this past Wednesday that hackers gained access to the site. The company has since closed the breach, bolstered its security, and notified customers to change their passwords. Credit card information was not part of the accessed information, but user names, email addresses, and encrypted passwords were.

"We have since improved our security procedures and systems in numerous ways, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months to come," the company posted.

Norrathian Notebook: Musings on my EQII Tears of Veeshan experience

        Posted: 15 Feb 2014 03:00 PM PST

EverQuest II's most recent expansion, Tears of Veeshan, landed a couple of months ago. That's given me a good amount of time to sink my teeth in and really experience what it has to offer. I've run a few different characters through much of the storyline, explored various nooks and crannies, and poked into a number of the dungeons. If you've been watching EverQuest Two-sday, you've seen some of those adventures as they were playing out. If not, however, you may wonder what this expansion holds. Is there anything special that sets EQII's 10th expansion apart and makes it worth getting? That's what I am going to share with you in today's Norrathian Notebook.

For starters, ToV is chock-full of one thing I really love: dragons. Dead dragons, maybe, but still dragons! From the moment this expansion was introduced at SOE Live, I've been looking forward to cavorting through the realm of the dead, hobnobbing with the dragon residents. Then, after hearing more about the dungeons, the story, and the new class, I really couldn't wait. And now that I've seen it for myself, I haven't been disappointed.

The Mog Log: Patch 2.2 and beyond for Final Fantasy XIV

          Posted: 15 Feb 2014 01:00 PM PST

Is this the week when I get really annoyed at raising the item level cap? I don't know! Stay tuned, everyone.
Supposedly, we're still on track to see patch 2.2 in March. Assuming later March, that would mean we're still on a roughly four-month schedule for updates to Final Fantasy XIV, which feels just a bit slow... especially since what we know right now about patch 2.2 is just a bit thin compared to what we knew about 2.1 at the equivalent point in time.

Admittedly, I'm biased. New turns of Coil? Not really my jam. (Being able to stomp the old ones will be kind of nice, though.) Still, in some ways this update currently feels smaller than its predecessor, even though I'm pretty sure it isn't. We've got a lot of stuff incoming, but between a deluge of in-game events and the PlayStation 4 beta test, less attention has been paid to the update.

So let's shine some light on it. Yes, there's going to be some speculation, but let's start looking at what patch 2.2 is going to mean and what we'll be getting.

Free-to-Play Fatigue Part II: Bad News for Game Design

Last week I discussed how the free-to-play model has altered both game industry business practice and the collective profile of the gaming public, neither necessarily for the better. This week, I'd like to talk about the negative effect free-to-play is having on the creative side of the game industry.

Season 14 to Close with Next Realm Maintenance

The World of Warcraft Twitter has been updated with the notice that PvP Season 14 will close with the next realm maintenance next week and that Season 15 will begin a week later. The speculation is that Season 15 will last approximately sixteen weeks and that Season 16 will perhaps usher in the Warlords of Draenor expansion. This would put the release in mid- to late-June.
