Google dedicates doodle to remember late crocodile hunter Steve Irwin

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 12:05 AM PST

New Delhi: Google on Friday dedicated a doodle celebrating wildlife conservationist and television personality Steve Irwin's life and legacy, whom many grew up watching wrestling giant crocodiles in the Australian wilderness. A zookeeper by profession, Irwin achieved worldwide fame from his television series "The Crocodile Hunter". A typical "Aussie" mate, who would have been 57 on this day, created the runaway hit show that was seen in more than 100 countries by over 500 million people.

Doodle guest artist Shanti Rittgers created the slideshow of six images that told the story of Irwin, who inherited his love for the reptiles from his parents Lyn and Bob Irwin when they gave him an eleven-foot python for his sixth birthday, the Google blog post said.

Irwin who was born in Melbourne suburbs in 1962 named his first slithery friend Fred and later went on to introduce a whole new generation to reptiles, which could also be loved. Through his work at the Australia Zoo and his popular TV series Irwin and his family and even his future generation dedicated their lives to the preservation and appreciation of Earth's wildlife and wild places.

During the early 1970s, father, mother and Steve Irwin moved to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and opened the Beerwah Reptile Park that has an annual footfall of seven lakh. Learning to wrestle crocodiles since the age of nine, Irwin volunteered with Queensland's "East Coast Crocodile Management Program", helping to capture and relocate endangered saltwater crocodiles-the largest of all living reptiles-to protect them from being harmed.

He was involved in all aspects of managing his family's park, which was renamed Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, and eventually the Australia Zoo. Soon after taking over the park's management, Irwin met his future wife Terri who was visiting the zoo. They spent their honeymoon capturing crocodiles, and the footage they shot became the first episode of "The Crocodile Hunter".

Thanks to the show, Irwin's enthusiasm for saving endangered (and dangerous) animals quickly became as popular as his one-word catchphrase "Crikey!" It was also a family effort — while Steve and Terri hosted the show together, their children Bindi and Robert became fixtures on the show as well.

On September 4, 2006, Irwin was on location at Batt Reef in Queensland, taking part in the production of the documentary series Ocean's Deadliest when while snorkelling in shallow waters he was approached by a short-tail stingray. Trying to film it for his daughter's television programme, while swimming in chest-deep water, Irwin was stabbed by the giant marine creature.

According to the incident's only witness: "All of a sudden the stingray propped on its front and started stabbing wildly with its tail. Hundreds of strikes in a few seconds". Irwin initially believed he only had a punctured lung. However, the stingray's barb pierced his heart, causing him to bleed to death.

The stingray's behaviour appeared to have been a defensive response to being boxed in. Crew members aboard Irwin's boat administered CPR and rushed him to the nearby Low Isles where medical staff pronounced him dead. Irwin's death is believed to be the only fatality from a stingray ever captured on video.

Irwin's wife has shared her thoughts with Google: "Steve Irwin was a loving father and husband who dedicated his life to protecting wildlife and wild places… He was best known for his rescue and research work with endangered saltwater crocodiles, the closest living relative of the dinosaurs, now the largest reptiles on earth.

"Today we continue his mission by working to overturn recent legislation in Queensland which allows crocodile egg harvesting from vulnerable crocodiles in the wild to support the commercial leather trade. Steve's legacy will definitely live on."

Today, Irwin's legacy lives on through his family's continued animal conservation work and with the celebration of Steve Irwin Day each November 15 — an international celebration of wildlife, family, and fun including fundraising events to benefit the Australia Zoo's Wildlife Warriors programme. In 2001, the Australian government awarded Irwin the Centenary Medal for a lifetime of service, and in 2004 he was nominated for Australian of the Year. In 2018 he was also posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Indian-descent man admits to multi-million dollar immigration fraud

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 12:05 AM PST

New York: A 70-year-old man of Indian-descent, who pretended to be a US government official, has admitted to running a multi-million-dollar immigration fraud that duped over 100 people, according to federal prosecutors. Hardev Panesar admitted to the crimes in the San Diego Federal Court on Thursday and agreed to pay back $2.5 million to the victims, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Over a five-year period, he told numerous victims that he was an official of the Department of Homeland Security and that he and his associates could get them and their families legal immigration status, according to the DOJ. Just before his trial was to begin, Panesar jumped bail and fled to Mexico last June and hid there till he was caught by Mexican authorities who deported him to the US in August, the DOJ said.

Cutting short the trial process, he made the admission of guilt before Federal Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel, who is to sentence him in May. He faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. One his associates was sentenced to three years and ten months for his role in the scheme. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is continuing its probe as the fraud could have begun earlier and is asking anyone who may be a victim to contact the agency.

The DOJ said that Panesar showed victims fake government IDs and took their fingerprints. Taking fingerprints is a part of the immigration process and getting them would have made the scheme seem official. He often demanded more money to speed up what he said was the immigration process, the DOJ said.

First product of Apple’s electric car project could be a van

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 12:05 AM PST

San Francisco: The first product of Apple's self-driving electric car project codenamed "Titan", could actually be an electric van instead of a car, the media reported.

According to multiple unnamed sources of German business publication — Manager Magazin, prototypes of Apple's work have been seen painted in black and silver and the main highlight is that vans are being tested, rather than cars," Apple Insider reported on Thursday.

In August 2018, Tesla's former engineering Vice President, Doug Field was appointed by Apple to lead team "Titan". "The 'Apple Car' which could be arriving between 2023 and 2025, has undergone development at Apple in a variety of different. Originally working on an entire vehicle, the project changed its focus towards self-driving vehicle systems, though there are some signs it is shifting back towards overall vehicular design," the report said.

The fleet of Apple's self-driving programmes is made up of 66 Lexus RX450h SUVs, each of which is fitted with huge racks of LIDAR and radar sensors as well as cameras, roaming around the San Francisco Bay Area to perfect the sensors, computer systems and software required for a vehicle to safely drive itself. In January, Apple push out over 200 employees from its electric car project to other parts of the company as part of the re-structuring process of project "Titan".

The iPhone-maker is also said to be applying some of the "Titan" technology into a self-driving shuttle program titled "Palo Alto to Infinite Loop" or "PAIL" — intended to ferry Apple employees between the Bay Area campuses, using specially modified Volkswagen vans, the report added.

In May 2018, with 55 self-driving cars and 83 drivers, Apple touched the second highest number of self-driving cars in the US state of California after General Motor's Cruise, which had 104 vehicles.

Google ends forced arbitration for employees globally

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 12:05 AM PST

San Francisco: After facing intense protests over sexual misconduct and discrimination at workplace, Google has decided to end the forced arbitration policy for its employees. According to a report in Axios on Thursday, the new policy will go into effect from March 21 for Google employees globally. The decision will not open the door to bringing lawsuits over previously-settled claims, said Google.

"Employees with disputes currently in arbitration who are still employed by the company as of March 21 will be able to choose to sue instead," it added. Google employees the world over have called for the practice to end in other cases of harassment and discrimination.

"Google appears to be meeting that demand for employees — but the change will not apply in the same blanket way to the many contractors, vendors and temporary employees it uses," said the report. Forced arbitration agreements require employees to waive their rights to make a legal claim in court and instead go through a private system, said TechCrunch.

Google also said it would remove mandatory arbitration from legal agreements it reaches directly with its contract and temporary workforce. Last month, Google employees took to Twitter and Instagram to educate the public about forced arbitration Last November, over 20,000 employees staged a walkout at Google over forced arbitration.
