Nvidia 304.79 Beta Drivers Enable TXAA Antialiasing, Welcomes Windows 8 To The Family

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 11:08 AM PDT

Nvidia's engineers sure have been busy recently! Just days after releasing a WHQL-certified driver designed specifically for the Windows 8 Release Preview, a new beta driver has landed in our laps today. The GeForce 304.79 beta drivers are important for a couple of different reasons: they're the first drivers to enable TXAA anti-aliasing as well as the first unified Windows drivers to integrate Windows 8 in with Windows XP, 7 and Vista. The drivers are promised to work with notebooks and desktops alike.

TXAA antialiasing wasn't enabled before for the simple fact that no games supported it. That changed today with the launch of "The Secret World," a new MMO by Funcom, though Nvidia's GeForce blog notes that the smoother textures won't take hold until the game releases an update of its own to activate the TXAA functionality. Another downside: only GTX 600-series video cards support TXAA.

Other than that, there isn't much. Some bugs were squashed, and the 304.79 drivers add SLI profiles for the following games:

  • End of Nations
  • Nexuiz (released at an earlier date via NVIDIA Update)
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier (released at an earlier date via NVIDIA Update)
  • Tornado Force
  • Tribes: Ascend (updated)

As always, you can read about the new beta drivers on the GeForce blog or grab them on the GeForce website.

AMD FX-8350 "Vishera" CPU Could Hit Desktops This October

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 10:47 AM PDT

We've got Ivy Bridge, we've got Trinity, when are we going to see a desktop follow-up to AMD's Bulldozer chips? Some hub-bub around the Web says we'll be seeing the Piledriver-based Vishera lineup sometime in the third quarter, with the flagship AMD FX-8350 possibly coming at the end of October.

That news comes courtesy of Fudzilla and Hexus sources, who also detailed what we can expect to see from the FX-8350. If those sites' information proves to be true -- and it often is -- the FX-8350 will sport 8 Vishera-based 32nm cores clocked at 4.0GHz/4.2GHz turbo with a 4x2MB L2 cache and 8MB L3 cache. The chip is also expected to have a 125 TDP, the same as the FX-8150, and it will be AM3+ compatible.

Will the rumors turn out to be true? Who knows? As it stands, does the FX-8350 and Vishera pique your interest? AMD's 2013 desktop roadmap doesn't anticipate the launch of any new traditional desktop CPUs beyond Vishera as the company focuses on its APU-centric heterogenous computing concept, so hopefully it's enough to satisfy AMD fans for a while.

The company does expect to launch a "Kaveri" desktop APU next year with 2- to 4- Steamroller CPUs and an integrated Graphics Card Next-based GPU, as well as a lower-powered "Kabini" APU based off of Jaguar CPUs. Steamroller is the successor to Piledriver; Jaguar is the successor to the Bobcat cores found in Brazos APUs; and GCN is the architecture powering in this generation's 28nm Radeon HD series of video cards.

Blizzard Denies Barring Linux-Loving Diablo III Users, Says Banhammer Hit Actual Cheaters

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 10:04 AM PDT

Despite its record-setting sales success, Diablo III has seen its fair share of criticism Yesterday saw a damning new accusation leveled at Blizzard: several Battle.net and WineHQ forum users claimed that they'd been banned from the game simply for playing it on Linux, using Wine. The flames fanned rapidly, with the Battle.net thread rapidly growing to over 45 pages in length in less than 20 hours. But is Blizzard really swatting the banhammer at Linux lovers?

In a word, no. A Blizzard moderator leaped out of the woodwork to drop the following tidbit o' knowledge:

We've extensively tested for false positive situations, including replicating system setups for those who have posted claiming they were banned unfairly. We've not found any situations that could produce a false positive, have found that the circumstances for which they were banned were clear and accurate, and we are extremely confident in our findings. Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned – cheating will.

Some tinfoil hat types continue to claim that Blizzard is lying, but a small horde of users have posted that they're still playing Diablo III with Wine with no problems whatsoever. So there you have it, demon slayers: as long as you're not trying to transmogrify your Wine-based Diablo III experience into bot-herded gold, you should be good to go.

Electronic Arts Aims for 100 Percent Digital Distribution Model

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 08:08 AM PDT

Remember when you could walk into a store like Software Etc. and wade through aisles and aisles of PC games packaged in gigantic boxes? Those days are long gone, and though you can still find a single rack of PC titles at your local GameStop, boxed copies are becoming something of a rarity these days. For Electronic Arts, the demise of boxed games, PC and console, can't happen fast enough as it looks to go all-in with digital downloads.

Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels, sat down for a chat with GamesIndustry International and revealed that his company has a "clear line of sight" on putting all its eggs into a digital streaming basket.

"For us, the fastest growing segment of our business is clearly digital and clearly digital services and ultimately Electronic Arts, at some point in the future - much like your question about streaming and cloud - we're going to be a 100 percent digital company, period. It's going to be there some day. It's inevitable," Gibeau promised.

Going strictly digital means tapping into various distribution opportunities, like IP televisions and streaming, both of which Gibeau said EA is prepared for. He also indicated that NPD's monthly reports are largely irrelevant and erroneous in scope.

"The number of Nucleus accounts we're growing, the amount of engagement time that we have, the amount of services that we're running - those are more important metrics for us than unit sales according to NPD and North America," Gibeau said.

None of this should be shocking to anyone who's followed EA. Company CEO John Riccitiello said a year ago that EA was transforming "from being a packaged goods centric company to a fully integrated digital model."

iFixIt Deconstructs First Jelly Bean Tablet, Google's Nexus 7

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 07:23 AM PDT

The folks at iFixIt have a penchant for tearing apart hardware and giving us more than just a passing glimpse at what lies underneath the hood of the latest gear. We always look forward to these teardowns, in part because it means we don't have to risk destroying our own hardware to peek inside. Another reason is because iFixIt has a way of securing tech toys that aren't available to the general public yet, like Google's recently unveiled Nexus 7 tablet.

Rest assured, iFixIt gave the Nexus 7 the full teardown treatment, carving it open like a Halloween pumpkin. In place of seeds and stringy pumpkin guts, iFixIt discovered a 4326 mAh battery, which unlike the iPad, was "actually quite easy to remove." There was just a small amount of adhesive holding it place around the metal frame, iFixIt says.

Interestingly, iFixIt discovered a pair of drivers, even though the official Nexus page only advertises a single speaker in the back. These were also relatively easy to remove, as was most of the hardware, resulting in a 7 out of 10 score on iFixIt's repairability chart (10 being the easiest to repair).

First Twitter Transparency Report Tattles on Uncle Sam

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 06:53 AM PDT

Good old Uncle Sam can be awfully nosy when he wants to be. The U.S. government poking its head into personal affairs isn't news to most, but it is reiterated by Twitter's first ever transparency report, which was released on Monday just two days ahead of July 4th, otherwise known as Independence Day in the States. Not by coincidence, Twitter notes "July 4th serves an important reminder of the need to hold governments responsible, especially on behalf of those who may not have a chance to do so themselves." Let the fireworks begin.

Twitter said it drew inspiration from the "great work" done by Google, and with that in mind, the goal is to shed light on how often the governments around the world request information for user information and to withhold content, as well as the number of DMCA takedown notices it receives from copyright holders.

Dating back to the beginning of the year, Twitter's transparency report reveals the microblogging service received 849 user information requests, 679 of which came from the U.S. government. Officials in Japan were the second most curious, accounting for 98 requests for user information.

"We've received more government requests in the first half of 2012... than in the entirety of 2011," Twitter noted. "Moving forward, we'll be publishing an updated version of this information twice a year."

Twitter doesn't always comply with user information and takedown requests, though the microblogging service didn't attach a number or percentage to how often it does.

Move Over Notebooks, Tablets are Taking Over

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 05:48 AM PDT

With devices like Amazon's Kindle Fire and the upcoming Surface by Microsoft freeing would-be tablet buyers not interested in the iPad from the tyranny of Apple's ecosystem, there's something in the tablet space for everyone, regardless of platform affinity (webOS notwithstanding). What that's going to do over the course of the next several years is propel demand for tablet PCs past that of traditional notebooks, though don't mistake that to mean laptops are dead.

On the contrary, DisplaySearch's Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report predicts that notebook PC shipments will grow from 208 million units in 2012 to 393 million by 2017. Pretty good, right? Tablets are expected to perform even better, ballooning from 121 million units to 416 million units in the same time frame, and actually surpassing notebook shipments a year earlier in 2016.

"Consumer preference for mobile computing devices is shifting from notebook to tablet PCs, particularly in mature markets," said Richard Shim, senior analyst at NPD DisplaySearch. "While the lines between tablet and notebook PCs are blurring, we expect mature markets to be the primary regions for tablet PC adoption. New entrants are tending to launch their initial products in mature markets. Services and infrastructure needed to create compelling new usage models are often better established in mature markets."

It's hard to imagine tablet PCs replacing notebooks outright, but the two segments do seem to be moving closer towards each other. The Ultrabooks of tomorrow will be even thinner and lighter than they already are and sport touchscreens, while tablets like Microsoft's Surface are starting to implement hardware keyboards. Five years is an eternity in tech time, and it will be interesting to see what separates a notebook from a tablet by the time 2017 rolls into view.

Knight Age
The studio that brought us Silkroad Online has announced its newest venture in the MMORPG market: Knight Age. And what's a knight without his or her horse? Knight Age will feature mounted combat where players will be able to perform elaborate attack skills while mounted and on the move.

With Dungeons and Dragons Online's first expansion Menace of the Underdark a week old now, have you seen everything? Neither have we. Luckily for us all, Turbine keeps treating us to screenshots showcasing the new areas. Today the spotlight is on the new dungeon, House of Broken Chains. Besides just offering the standard fare of foes, this dungeon presents a new dynamic in the game; as players fight both slaves and their masters, they can choose to kill all of the slave masters and free the slaves or simply eradicate everything in true hack-and-slash form.

Take a look at the images of this new dungeon along with other Menace of the Underdark screens in the gallery below.

End of Nations - tanks and stuff
What do Trion and Tears for Fears have in common? Not much aside from the title Everybody Wants to Rule the World, which will now be stuck in your head for the next couple of hours. You're welcome.

Trion has co-opted the phrase in its latest press release for End of Nations, which reveals that the game's first closed beta event is coming on July 20th. The first event "promises both large and small player maps across a variety of different terrains, as well as a multitude of upgrade options and a wide range of units and battle tactics to deploy," according to the devs.

You can either apply for beta and hope for the best, or you can shell out $29.99 for the founder's edition and its guaranteed access. Details on both options are available at the official EoN website. We've also got a complete list of founder edition goodies listed for you after the cut.

World of Tanks 75 patch to add new tanks, maps
Update 7.5 is on its way to World of Tanks. The patch will likely make endgame players happy, as it includes new Tier 10 medium tanks, tank destroyers, maps, and vehicles.

The American tech tree gets most of the Tier 10 love courtesy of two T110 model destroyers and an M48 Patton III. French, German, and Soviet forces aren't left out, though, as each gets two additional tanks. Finally, Wargaming.net is expanding the game's map roster with three new North American locations called Port, Highway, and Quiet Beach. Head past the cut to see all of this in action via the new 7.5 trailer.

Frogster changes name to Gameforge Berlin AG
After two years of working together in harmony under the separate names Frogster and Gameforge, Frogster's shareholders decided to fully integrate the two and ditch the Frogster name. This will not only affect the German company's European subsidiaries, but will also change the Frogster America and Frogster Pacific GmbH names to Gameforge America Inc. and Gameforge Pacific GmbH, respectively.

There's no word of any staff changes or (further) game shutdowns associated with this name change, and the company's CEO, Seth Iorio, commented that they now have "the combined experience and expertise of around 600 employees in all locations available and can thus offer our players even better service."

Some secrets are out. Funcom might have slipped the launch in a day early, but The Secret World's launch trailer kept to the initial schedule. For just under three minutes, players can now get a glimpse of some of the secrets hiding throughout the world in the form of various beasts and monsters while being serenaded by the bluesy voice of Dinah Washington crooning (the quite appropriate) This Bitter Earth.

July is here and with it comes heat, BBQs, and Atlantica Online's newest in-game challenge: the Bunraku Festival. Why participate in this summer festival? How about for the chance to recruit the new Puppeteer Rin mercenary. When battling the forces of evil, who wouldn't want to have puppeteer with a power-saw-wielding puppet on their side?

From now until July 26th, players can collect festival scripts just by logging in and also by helping bring an end to evil through a series of quests for Dr. Gon. These scripts can then be turned in for various prizes, including the mercenary.

Yes, it's another Secret World-powered opinion post. Some on the Massively staff have fallen for the game pretty hard, so you'll have to bear with us if you're not among the faithful.

In any event, Funcom's horror-conspiracy title officially went live yesterday, and the occasion made me think about the last time an MMO launch actually met my expectations (in a positive way). Sure, there's several features I would like to see implemented in TSW going forward, but as it stands, it's one of the more enjoyable MMOs I've played in a while.

How about you, dear readers? Has any MMO launch lived up to your expectations?

Upcoming MOBA SMITE met some opposition from The Universal Society of Hinduism this week as the game lets players control the Hindu gods Kali, Vamana, and Agni. Developers also released Guan Yu this week, a new character based on an ancient Chinese general. Lord of the Rings-based MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth published its first gameplay trailer this week, showing classic DotA-style gameplay tweaked for console controls.

Diablo III released a hotfix this week that doubled the drop rate of valuable items in Inferno difficulty and made bosses more tempting targets. Blizzard also announced plans to address the use of gear-switching mouse macros that players have been abusing in magic find runs. Upcoming free-to-play dungeon crawler Path of Exile released exciting details about its endgame map system that is sure to take over from traditional magic find runs.

League of Legends celebrated the release of its Pulsefire Ezreal legendary skin this week with a half price offer and an updated Ezreal champion spotlight video. Dota 2 also continued its march toward release with the addition of two classic heroes: Luna and Wisp. Finally, Firefall reached a whopping 500,000 beta signups this week and impressed fans with an augmented reality technology demo.

The game's full title is Eligium: The Chosen One, but as it turns out, the game wasn't chosen after all. Following evaluations of the game's performance and player feedback, Frogster has determined that the game simply isn't up to the company's standards, and so Eligium is shutting down as of July 17th. Forums for the game will remain open until the 19th for players to say goodbye and possibly coordinate on moving to a new game.

Players who had acquired shop currency or items in the game will be reimbursed through store credits to other Frogster games. Direct refunds will not be available, and further purchases are already disabled. Players will also benefit from regular Experience and Soul Point boosts until the live servers are shut down so that everyone can enjoy one final romp. The game's official site is already unavailable, marking a sad day for all those who did enjoy the game during its brief life.

Darkfall kicks off its ultimate promotion

You can max the standing skill by doing this for like four minutes.
Whether you're currently playing Darkfall, a former player with interest in the state of the game, or an onlooker curious about the game, today brings you good news. Today is the start of the Darkfall Ultimate Promotion, an event slated to run until the game gets its major version 2.0 upgrade. That means that new players can start off playing the game for just the price of a month's subscription and all players can enjoy the discounted subscription rate of $9.95.

The promotion isn't limited to the subscription fees, however; the game has multiplied skill gains by 20 as previously reported. Global loot drops are quadrupled as well, giving players plenty of opportunities for major rewards. If you've got any interest in Darkfall, today is probably the day to go back or head in for the first time, as these benefits will fade as soon as the game launches its major reboot.

This isn't quite as inspiring as it could be.
If you were the CEO of a major MMO developer and your studio had just finished a major game project, what would you do to celebrate? Buy some drinks? Throw a party? Resign from your position and step into a new advisory role? Apparently Funcom's former CEO Trond Arne Aas opted for the last one, as he has officially ceded the CEO post to former COO Ole Schreiner on the same day that The Secret World has launched.

Aas himself is remaining with the company as a chief strategy officer, working on the company's newly announced LEGO game as well as undisclosed other projects. His direct statements indicated that he feels the company is in a solid position on all fronts, meaning that now is the perfect time for him to step into a freer advisory position while still remaining involved with the future of Funcom. It's a surprising move, but we hope it's one that will benefit both Aas and Schreiner in the long run.

During last month's E3 and earlier this year at GDC, we got a chance to lay our hands on Grimlands, a new sandbox-shooter hybrid from gamigo. Given the game's post-apocalyptic setting and our fondness for open-world, off-the-rails titles, we were quite excited to take it for a spin.

We also had plenty of questions for the devs, and fortunately product manager Bjoern Cahnbley was able to answer a few of them. Head past the cut to find out about PvP flagging, item decay, vehicles, and a lot more.

The upcoming MMO by Bigpoint now has a full name: Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms.

Producer Max Pfaff is relieved to have this major step out of the way: "Selecting a game's title can be quite an arduous process, especially in the free-to-play space where games must be easily discoverable by players around the world. By selecting Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms, we're confident that we've chosen an identifiable name that will resonate with the global community of diehard Thrones fans."

The project, which is being developed with HBO's cooperation, is set to make its grand entrance at this year's Comic-Con. It's there that the studio will show an exclusive game trailer, which promises to show the Seven Kingdoms' visual aesthetic and gameplay.

Er, well, apparently it's launch day for The Secret World. Funcom has officially opened the floodgates, according to its Twitter feed.

A few weeks ago, we put together a news roundup feature focused on TSW. We do this for every major MMO launch, but this one was a bit, well, early, since early access was still a month away at the time. We did it as a public service for our friends at Joystiq (and their heathen what's-an-MMO readership that had never heard of TSW). Just kidding, guys -- we love you, and we know there's some crossover too.

In any event, it's time for the real Secret World roundup because a lot has happened since the warmup. Oh, and today is actually launch day, so it kind of makes sense. Join us after the cut for everything you need to know about Funcom's new horror-conspiracy MMO.

Leaderboard Fantasy vs scifi vs contemporary setting
Whoa Nelly! We have ourselves a rootin'-tootin' genre standoff in this here Leaderboard! It all started when the various representatives from the major MMO settings got together for an early week brunch, and it ended with drawn swords, pistols, and ray guns. Every setting thinks it's the best, of course, and they all have the egos to back it up.

Let's see whether we can't defuse this standoff today, shall we? Let's vote for the best genre setting for an MMO: fantasy, science fiction, or contemporary. By far, fantasy has the most MMO representatives and is pretty much the main staple of the industry. However, both science fiction and contemporary titles have been making in-roads, from The Secret World to Star Trek Online.

Is it better to play in a virtual world that's the most similar to yours? Does a mythological spin on the Middle Ages resonate most strongly with our sense of adventure? Or does the far-flung future hold the most prospect in giving us an unlimited frontier? Make your vote known after the jump!

The Secret World doesn't officially launch until tomorrow, but Funcom has already unveiled the game's first major patch. Early release customers have been playing since last Friday, and today they awoke to a lengthy set of update notes for version 1.0.

The patch doesn't feature any huge additions (or nerfs) but does boast a sizable collection of tweaks ranging from client and GUI adjustments to a fix for the chat server crashes that manifested over the weekend. Head to the official Secret World website for all the details.
