Here’s How to Watch Every Wimbledon 2019 Match for Free

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 04:24 PM PDT

The 2019 Wimbledon tennis tournament kicked off with some epic match-ups — and some even greater upsets.

Starting Monday and continuing through July 14, the world’s top tennis stars will battle it out on the grass courts for the world’s oldest tennis tournament title. After a dramatic first round that included 15-year-old Cori Gauff upsetting veteran Venus Williams, the second round of men and women’s singles starts on Wednesday and continues through Thursday, July 4.

For the next two weeks, players will face off on the courts at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, in front of more than 473,000 fans — including some A-list royals. On Tuesday, tennis fan Kate Middleton sat in the crowd before heading to the royal box to watch fellow Brit Harriet Dart battle American Christina McHale.

The 142-year-old tournament is one of four Grand Slam tournaments, along with the U.S. Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open. Important Wimbledon matches, including the finals, will be played on the famed Centre Court.

On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are seeded in the top three slots.

On the women’s side, keep an eye on Serena Williams, Karolina Pliskova and Gauff, who is fresh off her Venus Williams upset. Although Serena Williams had been battling a persistent knee injury earlier this year, she came out strong in the first round and has her eye on a career 24th Grand Slam singles title. She also confirmed she will take part in a mixed-doubles partnership with fellow tennis legend Andy Murray.

Read on for some easy ways to watch the iconic competition in real time.

European Parliament Opens Amid Protests From Anti-EU and Separatist Groups

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:18 AM PDT

The newly elected European Parliament got off to a somewhat tumultuous start on Tuesday as protests from anti-EU, anti-Brexit and Catalan-separatist groups disrupted the proceedings in Strasbourg.

The proceedings were marked by protests by the UK’s anti-EU Brexit Party and Catalan nationalists, whose MEPs have been blocked by the Spanish government from taking their seats. Others defended the captain of a German rescue ship who was arrested in Italy on Monday over migrant rights.

The event took place as EU leaders went into a third day of negotiations about who to appoint for its top jobs.

The Brexit Party’s 29 MEPs turned their backs when an ensemble started playing Beethoven’s ‘Ode to joy’, the European anthem.

Hundreds of Catalan demonstrators protested outside the Parliament against the decision to deny three separatist politicians their seats. Parliament President Antonio Tajani said he could not treat them as MEPs for the time being since Spanish authorities do not recognize them. Fellow MEPs placed photos of missing members on their desks.

Former president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, and colleague Toni Comin, who were not able to take their seats because they fled to Brussels after a referendum on independence took place in 2017 without permission from Madrid. They did not appear in Madrid’s parliament to declare their allegiance to the constitution last month, as required.

Catalonia’s former vice-president, Oriol Junqueras, is currently on trial in Spain and faces a 25-year sentence if convicted of rebellion. The Spanish Supreme Court refused to let him out of prison and travel to Brussels to fill in his MEP forms, saying it would pose a “danger” to the case against him.

The UK’s pro-EU Liberal Democrats staged their own protest by wearing “Stop Brexit” T-shirts.

The European elections in May saw the highest turnout in decades. The result was a more fragmented Parliament with a surge in far right and environmental parties.

14 Russian Sailors Dead After Fire in Secret Navy Submarine

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 09:52 AM PDT

(MOSCOW) — Fire broke out on one of the Russian navy’s deep-sea research submersibles, and toxic fumes from the blaze killed 14 sailors aboard, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday, although it released few details about the disaster or the vessel involved.

The Defense Ministry did not say how many sailors were aboard the vessel during Monday’s fire, whether there were any survivors or if it was submerged at the time. But Russian media reported it was the country’s most secret submersible, a nuclear-powered vessel designed for sensitive missions at great depths.

President Vladimir Putin, who came under criticism for his handling of the Kursk nuclear submarine disaster in 2000 that killed 118 sailors, canceled a scheduled appearance and immediately summoned Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu for a briefing on the blaze, which was under investigation.

“Fourteen submariners have died of poisoning by fumes from the fire,” Shoigu told Putin during a televised meeting. “The fire was extinguished thanks to the crew’s resolute action.”

Putin ordered Shoigu to fly to the Arctic port of Severomorsk, the main base for Russia’s Northern Fleet where the vessel was brought, to oversee the investigation and report back to him personally.

“It’s a huge loss for the navy,” Putin said. “I offer my sincere condolences to the families of the victims.”

He added that the vessel had a special mission and an elite crew.

“It’s isn’t a regular vessel. It’s a research vessel with a highly professional crew,” Putin said, adding that seven of the dead had the rank of captain and two were awarded the nation’s highest medal, the Hero of Russia.

The fire occurred while the submersible was measuring sea depths in Russia’s territorial waters, the ministry said, adding that the vessel also is used for studying the seabed.

Russia’s RBC online news outlet and the Novaya Gazeta newspaper identified it as the nuclear-powered AS-12 Losharik.

The vessel is the most advanced Russian submersible, under a heavy veil of secrecy, and it is believed to have entered service in 2010. It is named after a Soviet-era animated cartoon horse that is made up of small spheres.

The name is apparently derives from the unique design of its interior hull, which is made of titanium spheres capable of withstanding high pressure at great depths.

In 2012, the Losharik was involved in research intended to prove Russia’s claim on the vast Arctic seabed. It collected samples from the depth of 2,500 meters (8,202 feet), according to official statements at the time. Regular submarines can typically dive to depths of up to 600 meters (2,000 feet).

Some observers speculated the Losharik was even capable of going as deep as 6,000 meters (19,685 feet), but the claims couldn’t be independently confirmed. Analysts suggested that one of its possible missions could be disrupting communication cables on the seabed.

The Losharik is carried under the hull of a mother submarine, the nuclear-powered Orenburg, and reportedly has a crew of 25, all of them officers.

Russian news reports said that while the Losharik officially belongs to the Northern Fleet, it answers directly to the Defense Ministry’s Department for Deep-Sea Research, reflecting the high sensitivity of its missions.

The vessel has been surrounded by tight secrecy, but in 2015, it was accidentally caught on camera by a photographer from a motoring magazine doing a photo session on the White Sea coast.

Igor Britanov, who commanded the Soviet K-219 nuclear submarine that suffered an explosion in one of its missile tubes in 1986 that killed four of its crew, was quoted as saying by Severpost news outlet that Monday’s blaze could have been caused by a short circuit or a flammable liquid getting into an air filter — the two most common causes of submarine fires.

The Russian navy also uses simpler Priz-class and Bester-class deep water vehicles, which have a hull built of titanium and are capable of operating at a depth of 1,000 meters (3,281 feet). The small vehicles have a crew of two and are primarily intended for rescuing submariners in case of incidents. Such vessels are transported to the area of operation by a carrier vessel and can operate autonomously for up to 120 hours.

The blaze marks the most serious Russian naval disaster since 2008, when 20 crewmembers died aboard the nuclear-powered Nerpa submarine in the Pacific Fleet after a firefighting system was accidentally initiated while it was undergoing sea trials.

The accident involving the Kursk was the worst naval disaster in post-Soviet Russia. It occurred on Aug. 12, 2000, when the nuclear submarine exploded and sank during maneuvers in the Barents Sea, killing all 118 crewmembers. Putin, who was in his first year of his presidency, came under heavy criticism at the time when he failed to immediately interrupt his vacation to take charge of the disaster.

‘Something Supreme.’ A Total Solar Eclipse Awes Chile and Argentina

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 09:09 AM PDT

(LA SERENA, Chile) — Tens of thousands of tourists and locals gaped skyward Tuesday as a total eclipse of the sun darkened the heavens over Chile and Argentina.

Tourists from around the world gathered to witness the cosmic spectacle, which began in the morning as the moon crossed in front of the sun and cast a shadow that passed over a tiny uninhabited atoll in the South Pacific and headed to South America. Chile and Argentina were the only inhabited places where the total eclipse could be seen.

The eclipse made its first landfall in Chile at 3:22 p.m. (1922 GMT) in La Serena, a city of some 200,000 people where the arrival of more than 300,000 visitors forced the local water company to increase output and service gas stations to store extra fuel. Police and health services were also reinforced.

“Oh! Oh! Oh!” thousands of spectators shouted as they jumped and danced without taking their eyes off the sky. After a brief moment of silence, the yelling returned as the sun’s rays began reaching Earth again.

Others shouted “Long live, Chile!” — a chant used at sporting events. In northern Chile, meteorologists measured a three-degree Centigrade drop in temperature and in the center a two-degree drop.

“Today Chile is the world capital of astronomy,” said Chilean President Sebastián Piñera, alluding to the dozens of giant observatories in the country, which amount to about half the world’s telescopic capacity. “We are the eyes and senses of humanity to be able to look, observe and study the stars and the universe.”

In the Argentine town of Chascomús, dozens braved near-freezing temperatures and strong winds and claimed a spot at a pier in a lagoon, hoping to catch a glimpse of the eclipse.

“I’ve been looking at the sky since my youth. My first telescope when I was a kid was made out of cardboard,” said Ricardo Rumie, a 68-year-old veteran eclipse-watcher, who set up his camera with a tripod and a telescope with a sun filter along the banks of the lagoon.

“I’ve seen other eclipses but never like this one. I just couldn’t miss it. For me it’s something supreme.”

Yoga teacher Cecilia Magnicaballi searched for the best spot to watch the eclipse with a green mat under her arm.

“This is about taking out the darkness, letting the sun, the light come in,” she said.

Some rushed to buy the cardboard-framed protective eyeglasses at the last minute.

“This is something that they say won’t repeat itself for like 300 years, so we wanted to bring our son,” said Maximiliano Giannobile, who arrived at the pier with 18-month-old Vitto wrapped in a puffy jacket and several layers of clothes.

Northern Chile is known for clear skies and some of the largest, most powerful telescopes on Earth are being built in the area.

“In the past 50 years we’ve only had two eclipses going over observatories. So when it happens and an observatory lies in the path of a totality, it really is special for us,” said Elyar Sedaghati, an astronomer working as a fellow at the European Southern Observatory in Paranal, Chile.

“We can finally use our toys during the day because it’s always at night that we use them.”

The town of La Higuera was also plunged into total darkness.

“We hope this milestone will transform (our town) into a tourist attraction, so that visitors … can come to La Higuera and take a picture where there once was a total sun eclipse,” Mayor Yerko Galleguillos said.

Town officials distributed more than 2,000 cardboard-frame protective eyeglasses at local schools and community centers while workers built statues of huge sunglasses and a darkened sun on a local square.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun and scores a bull’s-eye by completely blocking out the sunlight.

Thousands of visitors also trekked to neighboring areas of Argentina where the eclipse also will be total.

The San Juan provincial government installed telescopes and public viewing areas. Astronomers in Buenos Aires province offered yoga and meditation classes during the eclipse, which were also partially visible in other South American countries.

The Earth’s next total solar eclipse will be Dec. 14, 2020, and it also will cross Chile and Argentina, though on a different path.

In 2017, millions of people in the United States witnessed the phenomena, with a full solar eclipse visible in parts of 14 states and a partial eclipse seen in nearly the entire country. It was the first such widespread eclipse in the U.S. since 1918.

Sudanese Protest Group: Two Leaders Arrested Amid Standoff With Military Council

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 08:55 AM PDT

(KHARTOUM, Sudan) — A Sudanese opposition group said Tuesday that two of its leaders were arrested amid a weekslong standoff between the ruling military council and a protest coalition that held mass marches this week.

The Sudanese Professionals’ Association, which has spearheaded protests since December, said security forces arrested Yassin Abdel-Karim, head of the Sudanese Teachers’ Committee, in the capital, Khartoum. The committee is part of the SPA.

It said they also arrested lawyer Abdel-Majed Aidrous in the northern city of Atbara, the birthplace of the uprising that led to the military overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir in April.

The group said security forces searched the homes of three other leaders. The SPA is part of the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change, which represents the protesters.

A police spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The arrests came two days after protesters flooded the streets of Sudan’s main cities in the biggest show of numbers since security forces cleared a sit-in outside the military headquarters last month. At least 11 people were killed in clashes with security forces, according to protest organizers.

Brig. Gamal Adam, a spokesman for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, said a RSF solider was killed and 29 others was wounded during Sunday’s protests.

The FDFC on Monday called for marches in Khartoum and elsewhere on July 13 and for a general strike and civil disobedience the following day.

The coalition is pressing the military to hand over power to a civilian-led body, fearing that the generals intend to cling to power or preserve some form of authoritarian rule. They have also demanded an investigation into the recent violence.

“We do not trust in the military council,” activist Madani Abbas Madani said. “We will not put our weapon, which is the crowds of people, to just follow the road of negotiations alone.”

The African Union and Ethiopia have stepped up mediation efforts aimed at bringing the two sides back to the negotiating table. They submitted a proposal last week that was welcomed by both sides, but the protesters have refused to meet with the generals until they fully accept it.

The AU and Ethiopian envoys said they invited both sides for direct negotiations on Wednesday over the joint proposal.

AU envoy Mohamed El Hacen Lebatt told a news conference in Khartoum on Tuesday that the military council and the FDFC responded “positively” to the proposal. But they have disagreed on the make-up of the sovereign council that would rule the country during the transition — a topic they would discuss during talks, he said.

The Sudanese Revolutionary Front, a rebel group that is part of the protest movement, meanwhile, threatened to negotiate separately with the military council amid growing disputes within the coalition, the English-language Sudan Tribune reported Monday.

Gibril Ibrahim, an SRF leader, was quoted as saying that decision-making within the FDFC has been “kidnapped” by a small committee “formed in vague circumstances with limited representation.”

Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, deputy head of the military council, met with SRF leader Minni Minawi in Chad last week, where they agreed to extend a cease-fire and start peace talks.

The Trump Administration Protested When Kenya Halted a Coal-Fired Power Plant

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 08:13 AM PDT

When the Kenyan government had second thoughts about allowing the country’s first coal-fired power plant, the Trump Administration’s representative in the country protested.

U.S. Ambassador Kyle McCarter, a Trump appointee who previously served as a Republican state senator in Illinois, went on Twitter to argue in a string of tweets that coal is environmentally sound, that the plant would boost the country’s economy and that a critical analysis of the plant from a clean energy think tank amounted only to the work of “highly paid protestors.”

“Coal is the cleanest, least costly option,” U.S. Ambassador Kyle McCarter wrote from his official Twitter last week. “Investors will come.”

It’s unclear what lobbying — if any — McCarter has engaged in behind the scenes to promote the coal-fired power plant, but the voice of the U.S. government, which contributed more than a $1 billion in foreign to Kenya in 2017, carries weight within the country, and the White House has said that similar tweets from President Donald Trump are “official statements.”

Regardless of whether McCarter’s tweets were approved by the State Department ahead of time, they reflect the Trump Administration’s support for growing the coal industry internationally even as scientists warn that the energy source is one of the biggest contributors to climate change and growth in its use could make it all but impossible to keep the planet from warming to catastrophic levels.

These warnings have been left unheeded by Trump, who promised to promote coal throughout his presidential campaign and has unwound environmental policies to that end as president. Most significantly for coal, Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency has rewritten President Barack Obama’s landmark regulation of the power sector to reduce its impact on coal-fired plants. Still, Trump has been unable to halt the market forces and other pressures that have led hundreds of coal-fired power plants to close.

McCarter Twitter comments began on June 25, after Kenya’s National Environmental Tribunal’s announced that it would halt construction of the Lamu coal-fired power plant, which would have been the first such power plant in the country. The court said the project’s planners had failed to engage the local community and argued that the environmental review conducted ahead of the project did not adequately address several environmental issues including the country’s commitment to fighting climate change. The project could still be revived if a new environmental assessment adequately addresses the concerns laid out in the decision.

“These extraordinary measures are necessary to ensure sufficient access to information by the public on a project that will be the first of its kind in Kenya and the East African region,” the National Environmental Tribunal said in its ruling.

On Twitter, McCarter cited his experience with coal in his home state as evidence that the energy source would work well in Kenya. In his former position, McCarter received contributions from a slew of energy companies including coal interests, according to state disclosure forms. At the time, his nomination drew criticism from Democrats concerned that the Administration had not conducted proper vetting.

A representative U.S. State Department in the region did not provide comment on McCarter’s remarks or U.S. energy policy in the region. The U.S. recently launched a program promoting investment in the region, intended to serve as a geopolitical counterweight to China’s growing influence, and McCarter seemed to suggest that a coal-fired new power plant would advance U.S. investment. Still, on its face, the project raises questions about how it would serve U.S. interests over China’s given that it is financed by China and would be built by Chinese developers.

In a contrast to McCarter’s remarks, the Chinese ambassador to Kenya met with opponents of the coal-fired power plant on June 28 and told them that he supported the will of “the people of Kenya” to “decide whether there would be a coal power plant or not,” according to a statement from activists.

Trump’s campaign promise to restore coal has been met with numerous challenges, particularly in the U.S. Even as the Trump Administration has halted environmental rules, American coal-fired power plants have continued to close as the cost of alternatives — namely natural gas and renewable energy sources like wind and solar — have fallen in cost.

One bright spot for the industry has been the growth in international demand. While coal consumption fell in the U.S. last year, it rose slightly globally and is expected to remain steady for several years, according to a report from the International Energy Agency. “There’s a need for our coal around the world, and they want to burn our coal around the world,” Murray Energy CEO Bob Murray, a prominent Trump donor, told TIME last year. “So it’s been an offset to a great extent to the loss of the domestic coal.”

The Kenyan National Environmental Tribunal’s decision follows a report from the U.S.-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis that found that the a new coal-fired power plant would increase energy costs in the country and make it difficult for the country to meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement. In particular, the report pointed to the country’s rich stock of geothermal, hydropower and other renewables, which could support the country’s growing economy for the next decade.

“Adding renewables, instead of coal, will be less expensive,” says report author David Schlissel, citing a Kenyan government development report. “That will mean that customers of Kenya Power will have more money to spend elsewhere than on their electricity.”

On Twitter, McCarter dismissed the report as the work of “highly paid protestors.”

Facebook Fined $2.3 Million By Germany Under Hate Speech Law

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 06:45 AM PDT

(BERLIN) — German authorities say they have issued Facebook with a 2 million-euro ($2.3 million) fine under a law designed to combat hate speech.

The Federal Office for Justice said Tuesday that the social networking company had failed to meet transparency requirements for its handling of hate speech complaints.

The agency said Facebook’s report for the first half of 2018 didn’t reflect the actual number of complaints about suspected illegal content, which in Germany includes anti-Semitic insults and material designed to incite hatred against persons or groups based on their religion or ethnicity.

It said there was also incomplete information about the language skills and training of staff tasked with processing hate speech complaints.

Facebook didn’t immediately comment on the fine.

The Ransacking of Hong Kong’s Legislature Prompts a ‘Zero Tolerance’ Warning From Beijing

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:56 AM PDT

While hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters, including families toting young children, marched through the sweltering Hong Kong afternoon on Monday to express their opposition to a divisive extradition bill, a separate group took more forceful swings against the government

On the 22nd anniversary of the territory’s retrocession to China, hundreds of mostly young radicals used metal poles, hammers, garbage bins and carts to smash through the legislature’s glass façade and eventually invade the complex.

The spray-painting of slogans like “Hong Kong is not China” around the walls shattered any lingering illusions over the nature of their rebellion: This was a clear repudiation of China’s sovereignty over the enclave. Beijing, hypersensitive to any threat to its territorial integrity, will bristle at the unprecedented provocation from this former British colony.

The smell of tear gas from the police’s midnight eviction of the protesters had barely dispersed before the full-throated condemnation began. China’s state media Tuesday pledged “zero tolerance” for the “open and symbolic attack.”

“A zero-tolerance policy is the only remedy for such destructive behavior witnessed. Otherwise, and without this policy, it would be similar to opening a Pandora’s Box, upending social disorder,” the Global Times said in an editorial Tuesday.

After days of ignoring the Hong Kong unrest, state media also ran footage of police driving protesters from the streets, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Beijing has frequently suggested that foreign forces are behind Hong Kong’s democracy movement. According to AP, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang warned that other nations “must not support any violent criminals in any form, and not send any misleading signals or take any erroneous actions.”

Pro-government politicians echoed Beijing’s sentiments. “No slogan, no demand can justify this sort of violence,” lawmaker Regina Ip told reporters.

The political crisis engulfing Hong Kong and propelling millions of protesters to the streets kicked off earlier this year over a now-suspended bill to allow extradition to mainland China. The city’s Beijing-backed leader, Chief Executive Carrie Lam, insists the legislation would stop the enclave from becoming a criminal haven, while detractors fear it will infringe on the city’s independent judiciary and allow open season on the Communist Party’s political opponents. But the protests have quickly snowballed into a broader fight for greater autonomy, at the very least, if not self-determination.

During their three hour occupation of the Legislative Council (known locally as LegCo) Monday night, protesters moved swiftly to desecrate emblems of post-colonial Hong Kong—defacing portraits of the city’s political leaders, and spray-painting over the city’s official seal—before draping the colonial flag over the dais.

In a highly symbolic act, a protester tore up a copy of Hong Kong’s post-colonial constitution and scattered the pages. According to messages circulating on the encrypted app young activists use to communicate, some protesters were ready to die for the cause.

“We understand the risk of being here,” a 25-year-old protester, who gave his name as Alan, told TIME from inside the legislative chamber.

He insisted that the protesters were driven to this point by their lack of recourse and the silence from the government even after huge numbers of Hongkongers thronged to peaceful marches last month. “The Communist Party revoked our rights and freedoms and tried to deny us democracy,” he said. “At least now we can tell the globe.”

His comments reflect a deep disillusionment that has settled over the city’s youth in the five years since they last took to the streets en masse. In a 2014 fight for the right to directly elect the city’s leader, they paralyzed the financial district for 79 days. But the so-called Umbrella Revolution failed to extract concessions from Beijing, and further alienated Hongkongers from their political masters.

Democratic Party lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting said that after the storming of LegCo, “the Beijing government will try to tighten their control of Hong Kong and put even more pressure to silence the opposition forces. It will be an uphill battle for the democratic camp.”

In a show of just how deeply the fault lines are drawn, only 11% of respondents identified themselves as “Chinese” in a survey conducted by Hong Kong University just ahead of the July 1 handover anniversary. The majority defined themselves as “Hongkongers.”

‘A gift to the government’

Some argue that the more brazen protesters will jeopardize the goodwill built up through peaceful mobilizations.

“What [happened] in LegCo is mob rule, not legitimate political expression,” said Steve Vickers, CEO of political and corporate risk consultancy Steve Vickers and Associates, and the former head of the Hong Kong police Criminal Intelligence Bureau under the British. “The flying of the colonial flag inside LegCo is stupid and ignorant and deliberately calculated to inflame the central government and its supporters to provoke some form of intervention.”

Meanwhile, Antony Dapiran, a lawyer and author of City of Protest: A Recent History of Dissent in Hong Kong, said that the widening split between peaceful and radical factions of the protest movement was “a gift” to the government. “The government will take full advantage of this to drive a wedge between different elements of the protests.”

Aware of this possibility, protesters have been expressing political if not tactical unity. “I can’t really blame them,” says Ho Yi, a 57-year-old grandmother who took part in the anti-government march on Monday. “The youth are being forced to do things like that because the government doesn’t listen.”

Democratic Party lawmaker Roy Kwong said “When I was there yesterday, I told the protestors that there will be major consequences to their actions, including arrest. They said, ‘Yes, we know that, let us handle it.’ It seems that in this city, we need the young people to come out and protect us.”

Even at the front line, there is give and take. As the protesters smashed their make-shift battering rams into LegCo, many in the crowd admitted to reservations about the tactic. “These people are willing to sacrifice themselves because they feel hopeless about this government,” Kelvin, 20, said as masked protesters hacked at a reinforced glass door less than 15 feet away. He didn’t agree with what they were doing, but he added: “Their courage deserves the utmost respect.”

Courage will be what protesters will need most if they are to continue provoking Beijing. A representative of China’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office condemned on Tuesday the storming of LegCo and pledged Beijing’s support to hold the “extreme radicals” criminally accountable.

“This kind of seriously illegal action,” the representative said in a statement, “tramples the rule of law in Hong Kong, destroys the order of Hong Kong society and damages Hong Kong’s fundamental rights.”

Vickers raised the dark possibility that if local law enforcement could not keep order on the streets, Beijing might. “If the police don’t move in a much more determined manner,” he told TIME, “then matters may eventually be taken out of their hands.”

The enclave’s police force is not alone in feeling the pressure. Jean-Pierre Cabestan, a government professor at Hong Kong Baptist University, and the author of China Tomorrow: Democracy or Dictatorship?, says Beijing’s next move will be to “instruct Carry Lam to adopt a zero tolerance policy, or else … she will be sacked.”

Direct tax code: Does India really need a new law?

Posted:

By Sanjay SanghviThe Union Budget may be around the corner. But the task force set up by the finance ministry on the new direct taxes code (DTC) is scheduled to submit its draft by July 31. The task force was mandated to draft a new law to bring income tax in line with global best practices, while also addressing India's economic needs. Recently, the terms of reference was expanded to include faceless tax assessments, introducing amechanism for cross-verification of financial transactions, reduction in compliances, litigation and sharing of information among various economic agencies of the govt. While its stated objective is worth appreciating, the odds against introducing DTC are high, compared to ensuring that the existing income-tax law is administered rationally and with fairness.A new law is certain to consume precious time and energy for all stakeholders — taxpayers, tax authorities, tax advisers, the judiciary — in their need to unlearn the existing law and to learn the new code from scratch. Having said that, the Income-Tax Act has been amended several times to keep up with changing business dynamics.Whether these amendments have been measures to counter base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS), or to instal 'place of effective management' (POEM) guidelines in corporate taxation, the legislature has kept pace with the country's economic needs. But one is left unsure as to what specific change is being sought to be brought in by having a new tax law altogether, instead of bringing it under the existing Income-Tax Act.It is well-known that tax administration has been the biggest litigator in this country. While GoI has taken steps towards doing away with litigation of small tax amounts where cases are in favour of taxpayers at the appellate level, there remains a substantial backlog of cases across all appellate fora and courts. It is unclear whether bringing in DTC will add to or subtract from the present pile-up.Under the Income-Tax Act, several significant provisions have attained some certainty, thanks to judicial adjudication by tax tribunals and courts over time. As was highlighted by the Supreme Court in the Vodafone case in 2012, certainty and stability of law is fundamental for any fiscal statute. If a new tax code is introduced now, it would seem that such 'certainties' will need to be redefined all over again.Instead of a new tax code, what is needed is a fair and reasonable administration of existing tax laws as contained in the Income-Tax Act, 1961. With the introduction of the general antiavoidance rule (GAAR) in the Income-Tax Act, 'aggressive tax planning' on the part of taxpayers stands sufficiently addressed. Then there's the matter of treaty abuse by 'third country' parties. The terms of reference of the task force are laudable. But these, too, can be made part of the Income-Tax Act and implemented to reduce tax disputes in India. For instance, how does one reduce tax litigation when foreign direct investment into an Indian operating company from a prominent foreign economy is treated as unexplained cash credit (read: black money) in the tax assessment of the Indian company? Once again, fair and reasonable administration of tax laws, coupled with accountability of field officers, needs to be pushed as a solution. It is also not very clear whether the proposed DTC will articulate the provisions of income-tax law in a totally different manner, the new law being considered ostensibly to simplify matters and introduce best international practices. One hopes that GoI carefully considers the pros and cons of introducing the new tax code. It should also consider streamlining the existing Income -Tax Act instead of introducing DTC. India's state-owned banks had classified 1.50 trillion rupees ($21.76 billion) worth of loans as "wilful defaults" in 2018-19, with the biggest lender State Bank of India accounting for nearly a third, the finance minister said in the parliament.Under Indian law, wilful defaulters are classified as firms or individuals who own large businesses & deliberately avoid repayments. The State Bank of India saw the highest number of wilful defaults at 461.58 billion rupees, while Punjab National Bank stood second at 250.9 billion rupees, with Bank of India at 98.9 billion rupees, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a written reply to queries in the parliament on Tuesday.According to data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), gross loans and advances in state-run banks came in at 638.2 billion rupees, as of March 31, 2019.The Narendra Modi-led government has been tightening norms against wilful defaulters especially after Indian aviation tycoon Vijay Mallya, fugitive billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi fled the country following repayment defaults.Wilful defaulters are not sanctioned any additional facilities by banks or financial institutions, and they are debarred from launching ventures for five years. The government has debarred wilful defaulters and companies with wayward borrowers from accessing capital markets to raise funds or participate in insolvency resolution process.Bank chiefs can also authorise look-out notices for defaulters to prevent them from leaving the country.Public-sector banks filed 1,475 police complaints against wilful defaulters in the last three financial years, the finance minister added.

India-US to resume talks after trade tiff

Posted:

NEW DELHI: India and the US will resume their bilateral trade talks, with senior officials of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) visiting New Delhi next week.Assistant USTR Chris Wilson & deputy assistant USTR Brendan Lynch will be in New Delhi for trade talks, the first after India increased tariffs on 28 American goods following the US putting an end to preferential benefits to Indian exports last month."Things are moving after the G20 summit. USTR officials will come to India for talks in the next few days," an official in the know of the development told ET.The revival of the talks comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, at the Osaka G20 Summit, agreed for an early meeting of their commerce ministers to sort out the trade issues. The agenda of the official level meeting is still being firmed up. "There are many issues … the agenda is not final yet," the official said.India has said that it took some action after the US revoked the Generalized System of Preferences and that the two sides should see how the issues could be resolved going forward.Trump has said India and the US would have a "very big trade deal" to announce, something that New Delhi was bracing criticised India's high import tariff on the Harley-Davidson motorcycles as "unacceptable" and his administration wants India to lower the trade barriers and embrace "fair and reciprocal" trade.Washington has also sought access to India's dairy and medical-devices market. India's exports to the US amounted to $52.4 billion in FY19, while imports were worth $35.5 billion. 70047864 IPR, E-COMMERCE CRITICALIndia anticipated pressure from Washington to sign some kind of a trade pact besides extracting concessions on intellectual property rights and ecommerce. The US, through its Special 301 report, has tried to push India to drop Section 3 (d) of the Indian Patents Act that denies patents on items that are not significantly different from their older versions. It tented drugs to address situations of national emergency, as permitted by the global trade rules. On the digital trade front, Washington has flagged its concerns on India's draft ecommerce policy on data localisation requirements, restrictions on cross-border data flows, transfer of intellectual property and proprietary source code, and preferential treatment for domestic digital products. Besides, Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart have been impacted by India's prohibition of ecommerce companies with foreign direct investment from selling products via firms in which they have an equity interest, and making deals with sellers to sell exclusively on their platforms."There is a threat of a trade agreement but we should be clear on our red lines. RBI's data localisation norms, proposed ecommerce policy and tariffs on agricultural products are the non-negotiables," said a Delhi-based trade expert. As per another expert, this is the US' posturing before its elections next year and it can't promise India easier visa rules.

Fiat Chrysler Automobile to launch new Jeep SUV in India

Posted:

MUMBAI: Italian-American auto major Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA), in a bid to sustain interest in the brand, has approved a top-of-the-line SUV, under its Jeep brand, for the Indian market for 2020-2021.The new seven-seater SUV will be placed above the Compass SUV and will be pitted against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Mahindra Alturas and Honda CRV.The SUV, to be manufactured at the Ranjangaon plant on the outskirts of Pune, is likely to hit the market in the second half of 2020 or first half of 2021, according to people in the know."The project has been approved and it will be an offspring of the all-new Compass planned for 2020. With the launches of vehicles such as Trailhawk, Compass and now the Grand Compass or Compass Long, the company wants to reinforce Jeep's premium positioning in the market before the more accessible compact Jeep hits the market in subsequent years," said one of the several persons aware of the company's plan.ET is yet to get an official statement from FCA India on the queries sent over email. Jeep had got off to a good start with the Compass SUV in the Indian market after its launch in mid-2017, but the brand started coming off its peak with the overall slowdown in the market and intensifying competition in the premium SUV segment in 2018-2019. Even the exports volumes for Jeep are far from the company's estimates.FCA India Automobile volumes fell 17% in FY19 to about 16,000 units, down from about 19,358 units it sold in FY18.The volumes have remained under pressure in FY20 due to sluggishness in the market, but it is relying on models such as Trailhawk to limited edition variants to revive the excitement. The carmaker was planning to launch the Renegade, a B-segment SUV, after the Compass launch, but the plan was dropped.

RIL to invest about Rs 1,500 crore in 2 years in Jio Institute

Posted:

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has informed the government's Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) that it's investing about Rs 1,500 crore in its proposed university, Jio Institute, in the next two years to ensure that it creates a world-class centre of learning, said people with knowledge of the matter. This comes after the EEC, which monitors all Institutes of Eminence, had expressed its displeasure to the Jio team over delays in April. The Mukesh Ambani-led group is also in discussions with academic and institutional experts at Stanford University and Northwestern University in the US as well as Nanyang Technological University in Singapore on establishing the facility, it has informed the government, according to the people cited above. Jio Institute was the only greenfield institute selected as an Institute of Eminence by the government in 2018, sparking a controversy, as the honour had been bestowed on the basis of future plans. It was one of six institutes accorded the status — three each from the public and private sectors. 70049760 The Reliance Foundation Institution of Education and Research, which is setting up the university, told the EEC in a May 6 communication that hasn't been made public before that it had already invested Rs 775 crore and intends to plough in another Rs 600 crore in FY20. The institute plans to complete faculty and leadership recruitment along with design of the academic programme between September 2019 and October 2020, in time to begin admissions for the 2021-22 academic session, it told the EEC.In Talks with Experts at Global InstitutesReliance didn't respond to queries. EEC chairman N Gopalaswami was not available for comment. The Jio Institute team is learnt to be in discussions with academic and institutional experts at various global institutes. They include Nanyang Technological University president Subra Suresh; Michael Keller, chief librarian and vice provost, Stanford University; Frank Mulhern, associate dean, Medill School of Media and Journalism at Northwestern University and Vinayak Dravid, a professor at the latter school. Keller is helping with a digital library and digital learning modules. It is also learnt that advanced discussions are on with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) among other leading schools for a mentorship association with Jio Institute, as reported by ET on May 2.Global collaborations, expected to be finalised by September, are expected in academic programmes, the curriculum and research agenda, joint research centres, faculty recruitment and development, faculty exchanges for teaching and research besides student exchanges and research internship programmes. Plans are also afoot to draw up an ambitious programme to attract international students and scholars, especially at the postdoctoral level. The Reliance Foundation has informed the EEC that the programmes in its inaugural academic session will include engineering, natural sciences, arts, humanities and social sciences, management and entrepreneurship, and digital media and journalism. The Jio Institute was being planned on 800 acres in Karjat outside Mumbai. It may be twinned with another 150-200-acre site in Navi Mumbai's Global Economic Hub as environmental concerns have held back Jio's Karjat plan, forcing it to expand at Navi Mumbai instead.ET was the first to report that the EEC had hauled up the Jio Institute team at a review meeting of all the Institutes of Eminence held on April 30 for failing to meet timelines that had been pledged, such as those for setting up a campus and drawing up academic plans. At that meeting, the Jio Institute team indicated to the EEC that it would be able to start its first academic session only in 2021-22, instead of 2020-21 as had been originally proposed and that its campus was likely to move to Navi Mumbai. The EEC had asked Jio to come back in a week and submit a detailed explanation for the delays. Not fully satisfied with that response either, the EEC asked for quarterly status reports on progress made on various parameters and targets, said the people cited above.Reliance had submitted an updated report to the EEC thereafter, they said.

Corp bond market sees flight of capital towards less risky papers

Posted:

Investors' risk aversion in the local corporate bond market is clearly being noticed now with higher rated companies being able to double the amount that they raised from primary issuances in the first quarter of this year versus the same period last year. On the other hand, money raised by lower rated companies has halved in these two periods, data accessed from Prime Database show.AAA companies, the highest rated ones, have raised a total of Rs 92,191 crore through 147 issues in the quarter ended June 2019, double the Rs 47,393 crore raised in 88 issues in the quarter ended June 2018.Lower rated companies from AA to A have raised a total of Rs 10,112 crore in the quarter ended June 2019, half of the Rs 20,297 crore raised in the quarter ended June 2018.More importantly, as much as 90 per cent of the total Rs 1.02 lakh crore has been cornered by AAA companies in the first quarter of the current fiscal compared to 60 per cent of the total Rs 78,463 crore raised in the first quarter of the last fiscal. In other words, though the total amount of money raised through primary issuances has increased, higher rated companies have been able to corner a majority of the money this year versus last."The data clearly shows that there is a flight of capital towards the less risky instruments," said Sandeep Bagla, associate director at Trust Capital. "Investors especially institutional ones like mutual funds and insurance companies have moved away from lower rated companies and are preferring the safety of AAA companies. This means that lower rated companies have to look at different pools of capital like bank loans."Risk aversion in the corporate bond market started after IL&FS Financial Services, a group company of the Infrastructure Leasing & Finance Services Ltd (IL&FS), defaulted on payment obligations of bank loans (including interest), term and short-term deposits and failed to meet the commercial paper redemption obligations due on September 14, 2018.The default by this AAA rated group with more than Rs 90,000 crore of outstanding debt sent shock waves in the market as banks, mutual funds and insurance companies had to provide for possible losses from their investments. This contagion has now spread to other non-banking finance companies especially housing finance companies, which had so far relied on short-term borrowings to finance their long tenure home loans.

Mega trend starting in PSU stocks; IT, FMCG could drop 10%

For the midcap space to eventually bottom out, you will need a correction in largecaps that will lead to the real capitulation in the marketplace, says Gautam Shah, associate director and technical analyst, JM Financial. Excerpts from an interview with ETNOW.We are in the budget week. In which direction do you expect markets to go?Since the May 23 verdict, the market action has not been very encouraging. Every time the market has seen a bit of a rally, it has looked very listless without much momentum and at the same time whenever we have seen a minor decline within the large range, there has been a lot of momentum on the downside and a lot more participation. Clearly the market is looking a little top heavy and the chances of a breakdown eventually are quite high. The area around 11,900 is a very important assistance and it is going to be an extremely difficult task for the Nifty to get past this number in the current run itself. On the other hand, we believe that eventually the market will take out 11600 which is a very important support because the action around the election week was around the 11600 level and that is probably the reason the market is trying to respect it in the first attempt. We have seen this rebound in the last one week from that point but eventually, the breakdown is coming because some of the larger sectors which enjoyed leadership over the last many months, seem to be going through a distribution phase. If they were to start correcting, it would not take too much time for the Nifty to break 11600 and once that happens, possibly a 5% dip is on the cards. If you look at the weekly and monthly charts, there are a lot of divergences in the price action. The indicators seem to suggest that there is a disconnect and that the risk reward at 11850-11900 levels is not justified to go long. So we are recommending our clients to indulge in some profit booking ahead of the Budget day on July 5 and buyback lower. This is more of a short term stance. In medium term, we remain positive on the market but near term, the next few weeks are going to be more corrective in nature. What do you think is going to lead us down sectoral leadership? Which sectors are going to drag us lower? There are many sectors which have lost their leadership, to start with FMCG and IT. Those two sectors are going through a phase of distribution. IT stocks have stopped making new highs, FMCG stocks like ITC, Unilever, the consumption theme stocks, are not participating with the Nifty anymore. These are big names, they have done extremely well in the past and have been extremely overbought. There is a possibility of a 10% drop in both these sectors. If that were to happen, obviously Nifty can come off quite quickly. To add to this, the Bank Nifty is finding it difficult to get past 31500. Let us realise that the Bank Nifty has seen a phenomenal run from lower levels and is due for a correction and many of the big boys in the banking space are looking extremely extremely stretched. At these levels, even the banking space apart from a few PSU stocks look a little overbought. These three pockets of the market -- IT, FMCG and banks -- are the ones that can potentially take this market lower and sadly enough, you do not have much leadership on the way up because even stocks like Reliance from the oil and gas space have come off quite a bit from the recent highs. Let us also get your take on gold because that sure has been sparkling of late. At a time when there is no major disruption in the equity markets, what do you make of the trajectory for gold? Are we on course for further highs?I think so. Gold has made a comeback after almost five years. It was in a range. People had pretty much given up on gold because it was so frustratingly in a $100 range and this breakout beyond 1350 international prices you know suggest that there is a big move coming. It has already rallied about $70-$80 from the low but we are looking at a target of about 1560 and eventually even 1670. If that were to come by, it would mean equities might come under pressure and the gold chart is actually telling you that global equities might not been as safe a space as people might think. Over the weekend, you have Mr Trump getting friendly with just about everybody, but if you look at the charts, they are not in great shape. If you look at the US markets with the Dow around 27,000, there is a very high probability of a reversal taking place from these levels. If the Indian markets were to see a bit of a correction from here which, in my short term view, is going to be more because of global factors. When I look at the US or the European markets' charts, I am not at all comfortable. Those markets are likely to see a leg down very soon. I want to dwell a little bit more on the Nifty Bank. We have seen leadership come in but it has been isolated in some of those marquee names within the space -- three to four to be fairly specific. What is the sense that you getting within some of these banks as well as the trajectory for the Nifty Bank as well?It is quite a disconnect if you look at the Bank Nifty. Just three names -- HDFC Bank, Kotak Bank and ICICI -- have really helped the Bank Nifty and the entire market standout. I do not think this can continue because these banks are carrying just too much of a burden at these levels and they themselves are looking quite stressed of the charts. The time is coming wherein many of these winners of the last many weeks and many months could come under pressure. The market itself right now it is almost like a fortress which has been captured completely but there are five guards which are standing at the gate and they have been unharmed. But they will also get pounded at some point of time and that is what the charts are indicating. For the midcap space to eventually bottom out, you will need a correction in largecaps that will lead to the real capitulation in the marketplace. Only then may be the entire market start on a recovery. I do not think the midcaps can bottom out without the largecaps and with the mainline index coming off. So on the Bank Nifty, if 31500 does not get taken off, there is a very high probability of a 5% dip. We are working with levels of 29500 on the downside and we see that coming over the next four to six weeks. Despite the fundamentals in case of auto, you do not see that being mirrored in the stock prices of late. This has been the third straight month of double digit drop in auto sales numbers and yet some of these names have been bouncing back. What is your observation?Well there is nothing significantly positive. From time to time, some of the stocks in the auto space turn a little oversold but the rallies do not last.We have seen that many times for Tata Motors or Maruti. So, you do not want to jump the gun and believe that this is the bottom. If the markets were to go through a period of correction from here and if the Nifty were to fall 5%, which is my view, auto stocks will remain under pressure and we are in the kind of markets where you do not buy losers because cheap is getting cheaper and cheaper and cheaper. This is something that we have seen in the last six months with so many stocks losing 40, 50, 60% just like that even in the large cap space. Auto, metals, pharma have been the biggest underperformers in the last many months. This is going to continue and another 7% to 8% downside in auto index is quite likely. The fact that many of these auto stocks are staying around their support levels is an indication that eventually they will break and move lower. This is not the time to look at these spaces just because they might be a little cheap. I The only place is to hide in the current market scenario is capital goods and PSUs. Both these segments of the market are likely to do very well and one should allocate a lot of their portfolios allocation into you know both these spaces. You are saying that there is an opportunity in the long term to look at the mid and the smallcap segments. But what is driving this conviction and what are you identifying within the midcap basket? The midcap space has seen significant decline in the last 12 months, it is almost like 2008 if you look at the stock prices. On an average, you have stocks falling between 40-50% even though the Midcap 100 index is down about 30% from the recent highs. I look at the ratio chart very closely because that gives you an idea as to what the midcaps and smallcaps are doing versus the Nifty and if you look at the ratio chart of the midcaps and the small caps you will notice that they are actually at a five-year low and they are at a point from where historically reversals have been seen. But is that reversal going to happen immediately? Maybe not because our view on the Nifty is slightly negative. But I believe that the next two or three months is a good time to top up in the midcap space because when that recovery happens there is going to be a stampede. I am very sure about that because so many stocks are at the kind of levels from where they could easily double in value. One can easily get into a midcap mutual fund, something that we are strongly recommending to our clients if you were to do direct or an SIP route. Over the next three years, the midcap index can easily give you a 40-50% rally so within the space stocks can easily move up many times. So one should not lose this opportunity if that Nifty correction comes which I just spoke about top up into the midcaps and small caps because then when the recovery happens it is going to be really fast and I think this is a great opportunity.

Altran to boost Capgemini's ER&D outsourcing to India

Posted:

BENGALURU: Capgemini's plan to acquire engineering consulting firm Altran for €3.6 billion ($4.1billion) could boost growth in the Indian engineering services market, analysts said. The acquisition, announced last week, is primarily aimed at turning the technology services major into a key player with full stack capabilities across R&D, product engineering, manufacturing services, digital design, process consulting and software development and integration, according to the company.Capgemini and Altran combined could become a €17 billion entity in terms of revenue. "A majority of engineering work is outsourced onshore in Europe to the European pure-play engineering service providers. Multinational companies never had a large presence in this sector. Now, Capgemini is going to have a sizeable engineering capacity in India and it can try to convince European enterprises to offshore more engineering work to India," said Pareekh Jain, founder of Pareekh Consulting.Engineering and R&D services (ER&D) outsourcing is a largely underpenetrated market and about 5% of the $1.5 trillion R&D spend comes from service providers.Jain said India's has a 1% share of the globally outsourced engineering services business.European pure-play service providers such as Altran and Alten, apart from India's top five IT services providers and pure-play firms like L&T Technology Services, are the major players in this space, he said. The Paris-headquartered Altran bought fellow engineering services company Aricent in 2017, and unofficial estimates suggest it, along with Aricent, could have nearly 11,000 employees in India.Capgemini-Altran together have 258,000 employees across the world, with 46% in India alone, Capgemini told analysts last week.Capgemini is looking to combine its strengths in India and continue the growth momentum in the region, according to a company spokesperson. "In ER&D, we already have a number of people in India, and we will look at combining our strengths. In terms of the exact integration plan, this will be finalised once the deal has closed," the spokesperson said."In Q1 2019, growth continued to accelerate in this region (Apac and Latam), which is currently 7% of the group's revenues, driven mainly by financial services, manufacturing and services. We are looking forward to this continuing," the spokesperson added. There is greater potential in engineering services and India has an adequate talent pool, said Peter Bendor-Samuel, chief executive of US-based IT advisory firm Everest Group. "The best source of engineering talent in the world is India and we expect Capgemini, through its Altran acquisition, to significantly expand its India workforce over the next several years. We believe that India will be the primary beneficiary as a destination for this work," he said.India, a key market for the world's technology services outsourcing, has seen faster growth in engineering and R&D services, a segment that touched $36 billion in fiscal year 2019.

Will hire more talent across verticals: Samsung India

Samsung India on Tuesday said that after generating 2,000 new jobs in the past one year, the south Korean giant would hire more talent across verticals throughout the year as it "continuously realigns resources" as per business priorities.Reacting to a media report that said Samsung is slashing 1,000 jobs in India in the face of stiff competition from Chinese companies, the South Korean tech giant said the report is "misleading"."As we contribute to job creation, we continuously realign resources as per business priorities to make our business more robust and efficient for long-term success," a Samsung spokesperson told IANS.Samsung's profit growth has remained under strain since 2017-19 with Chinese companies such as Xiaomi and OnePlus eating into its share in the India smartphone business. The company's net profit in the 2018 financial year fell 10.7 per cent to Rs 3,712 crore while total income grew at a similar pace to Rs 61,065 crore, said the report in a leading business daily that cited disclosures with the Registrar of Companies (RoC).In the TV market too in which Samsung continues to to be the largest player, Chinese companies have started making inroads.Samsung, however, stressed that its business in India continues to grow and expand."We have demonstrated our commitment by building the world's largest mobile factory in Noida, investing in local R&D and we are exploring new businesses such as 5G Network, among others," said the spokesperson."In the past one year, we have generated 2,000 new jobs at Samsung. Samsung India's business continues to grow and expand, hence we will hire more talent across businesses through the year," the spokesperson added. The company said on Monday that the Indian market is expected to give the company a big opportunity to improve its 5G presence and it would launch 5G in India once telecom operators are ready to work with it.In the Indian smartphone market, Samsung has launched two successful series -- 'M' and 'A' -- this year. It sold a record five million units of Galaxy "A series" phones in just 70 days, starting March 1, achieving $1 billion revenue. The company has so far launched six models in the Galaxy A series -- Galaxy A50, A30, A20, A10, A70 and A2 Core -- and aims to make Galaxy A series a $4-billion brand in India this year.In the premium segment, Samsung India saw a massive jump in the first quarter of 2019, clocking 68.9 per cent market share (by volume) and 65.9 per cent (by value), riding on the success of Galaxy S10 series.

How to Do Liquid Stacking

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Liquid stacking is the process of pouring fluids with different densities on top of one another to create an array of separated ingredients in a bottle. Making a liquid stack is a simple process, but can produce some beautiful and awe-inspiring results. To stack liquids, you simply have to gather the proper ingredients, find the appropriate tools and use a steady hand to carefully pour your ingredients.

EditSteps

EditMeasuring and Pouring Your Liquids

  1. Find an empty 12 ounce (350 ml) bottle with a bottle cap. Find a clean, clear bottle that can hold 12 ounces (350 ml). As long as it has a resealable cap, you can use it. You can use a larger bottle if you want, but you'll have to adjust the ingredients so that the ratio between the bottle and the liquids inside it remains the same.[1]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 1 Version 2.jpg
  2. Dye of water and of rubbing alcohol with food coloring. Use 2 separate mixing cups and pour your rubbing alcohol into 1 cup and your water into the other. Add 1 drop of food coloring to each cup and mix them with a teaspoon. You can use any colors you'd like, but avoid using the same color as your dish soap with your water, since the water will be next to it in the bottle.[2]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • You won't be able to see the layer between the dish soap and the water if you dye your water to be the same color as the dish soap.
  3. Pour of dark corn syrup into the bottom of your bottle. Measure out your dark corn syrup and use a funnel to pour it slowly into your bottle. Try to avoid letting the corn syrup touch the sides of your bottle, as the residue may make stacking the next set of ingredients more difficult. Wait 3-4 minutes to let the corn syrup settle.[3]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • You may have to wait longer for it to settle if you hit the sides of the bottle while you were pouring it.
  4. Wash your funnel with warm water and dry it. You don't want any dish soap mixing with the corn syrup, or you could risk mixing your bottom layers together. To prevent mixing, wash your funnel under warm water and scrub it with a clean sponge. Dry it with a paper towel or dish rag before using it again.
Do Liquid Stacking Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Wash and dry your funnel after each use.
  5. Tilt your bottle and pour of dishwashing liquid into the container. Measure your dishwashing soap out. Place your funnel into the mouth of your bottle and tilt it towards you so that the funnel is aimed at the side of the container, just above the corn syrup. Pour your dish soap slowly and carefully. Avoid pouring it directly into your corn syrup. Wait 2-3 minutes to let the dish soap settle.[4]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • You need the dish soap to hit the side of the bottle first because you want to maintain the viscosity at the surface of the corn syrup. If you hit it directly, it may not stack.
    • You can tell the dish soap is settled when the bubbles stop moving.
  6. Add of water carefully on top of the dish soap. Wash your funnel and dry it with paper towels again to remove the dish soap residue. After your dish soap has settled in the bottle, tilt it slowly towards you and use your funnel or the measuring cup to slowly pour your water down the side of the bottle. Wait 30-45 seconds to let the water settle.[5]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Take your time when pouring the water. It's a lot thinner than the dish soap so it will pour more quickly.
  7. Drop of vegetable oil in with a baster. Use a baster to soak up your vegetable oil. Hold the point of the baster above the top of the water. Slowly squirt the vegetable oil on the side of the bottle and let it pool above the water. Continue to squirt the vegetable oil out until your baster is empty. Let it settle for 30-45 seconds.[6]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Once your bottle gets filled more than halfway, it's hard to tilt it without spilling your layers. If you have a bigger bottle, feel free to continue tilting it. Otherwise, use the baster.
  8. Finish your liquid stack with a layer of rubbing alcohol. Wash your baster thoroughly with warm water and soap before filling it with your rubbing alcohol. Carefully place it on the side of the bottle, above your layer of vegetable oil. Slowly squirt it out and let it settle for 30-45 seconds.[7]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Put the cap on your bottle and close it.
    • You will have 5 layers of liquid that are all different colors beautifully separated in your bottle!
  9. Flip the bottle upside down to watch the liquids resort themselves. With the bottle cap tightly secured on top of your bottle, turn the bottle slowly in your hand to flip it upside down. You will be able to watch the different liquids resort themselves in the original order that you poured them. Flip the bottle as a cool trick to show your friends, or as a part of a demonstration on density.[8]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • This will only work if you do it slowly, and you can only do it once or twice before the layers mix past the point where they're separated.
    • Your liquid stack won't stay together forever, so don't do this with the intention of making a decorative item for your home.

EditTrying Variations on the Project

  1. Do a simple version of the experiment with oil and water. You can perform a rudimentary version of this experiment by using only water and vegetable oil to demonstrate the fundamental principles of density and viscosity. To stack oil and water, fill a bottle or clear bucket halfway with water. Fill the rest with oil. The 2 liquids will separate on their own.[9]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • If you're simply trying to demonstrate what density and viscosity are, you don't need the full 5 layers. Use oil and water to simply get your point across.
  2. Repeat the process using more layers of liquid to make a bigger stack. You can make a 7-layer version of a liquid stack by using of each ingredient and adding 2 additional layers. Start with honey instead of using corn syrup and end with lamp oil on top of your rubbing alcohol.[10]
Do Liquid Stacking Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • In the 5-layer version of the project, you can use honey as a replacement for corn syrup if you don't have any laying around.
  3. Skip the food coloring for a more subtle effect. Try doing the experiment without adding your food coloring to the water and rubbing alcohol. This will create 2 totally transparent layers, which will let light pass through and make your colorful sections stand out more dramatically.
    Do Liquid Stacking Step 12.jpg

EditTips

  • The same principles at work here can be used with ingredients of different densities to make layered alcoholic drinks.
  • If the liquids aren't stacking after they settle, it may be due to the fact that your corn syrup isn't thick enough. Try again, this time adding of sugar to your corn syrup.
  • Use your liquid stack for a simple science project. Liquid stacking demonstrates a few important scientific concepts. Specifically, it illustrates how density allows different liquids of different masses to be sorted without using different containers. It also shows the importance of viscosity in keeping layers separated from one another.[11]
  • Liquid stacking makes for an interesting presentation as well. If you have to present an experiment at school, liquid stacking is a good idea since it requires few materials and little effort.

EditThings You'll Need

  • Measuring cup
  • 2 Mixing cups
  • Empty bottle
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Baster
  • Corn syrup
  • Dish washing soap
  • Water
  • Oil
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Food coloring

How to Play Bananagrams

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 01:00 AM PDT

Bananagrams is a fast-paced, competitive word game with similarities to both Scrabble and Boggle. Like Boggle, gameplay happens quickly and doesn't involve turns. Like Scrabble, each player builds his or her own interlocking grid of words until they've used all their letters. Try an alternate version of the game if you're playing by yourself, or if you want to speed things up a bit!

EditSteps

EditLearning the Traditional Rules

  1. Place all the tiles facedown on a flat surface. Unzip the banana-shaped pouch and dump out all 144 letter tiles in a central spot that's within arm's reach of all players. It's best to play on a hard, flat surface such as the floor or a table. No letters should be visible once you've flipped over all the tiles.[1]
    Play Bananagrams Step 1.jpg
    • This group of facedown tiles is known as the "bunch."
    • Mix the letters around a bit after flipping them over to ensure that they're randomly distributed.
  2. Each person takes a set amount of tiles, depending on the number of players. The number of starting tiles for each player is determined by the number of people playing the game. You can play Bananagrams with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 8.[2]
    Play Bananagrams Step 2.jpg
    • For 2-4 players, draw 21 tiles each.
    • For 5-6 people, draw 15 tiles each.
    • For 7-8 people, draw 11 tiles each.
  3. Start the game by saying "split" and flipping over your tiles. This is the signal for everyone to flip over his or her tiles so the letters are face-up. As you turn over your tiles, you should start thinking about words that could be formed using these letters.[3]
    Play Bananagrams Step 3.jpg
  4. Arrange your tiles into words that intersect like a crossword. Words can be arranged vertically or horizontally, but not diagonally. The goal is to be the first to use all of your starting letters in your word grid. You cannot use proper nouns or abbreviations.[4]
    Play Bananagrams Step 4.jpg
    • Each player creates their own, personal word grid (unlike Scrabble, where all players add on to one group grid).
    • Everyone should be playing simultaneously—there are no "turns" in Bananagrams. You are racing the other players to be the first to use all your letters.
    • Consider starting off with a longer word, which gives you more opportunities to build new words.[5]
  5. Exchange 1 letter tile for 3 new ones if you're having trouble using it. This is called "dumping." Many people dump tiles if they have too many vowels, too many consonants, or even just a tricky letter like an X or Q. Place the tile you are dumping back in the bunch, say "dump!" then draw 3 new tiles.
    Play Bananagrams Step 5.jpg
    • Be sure to dump your letter far away in the pile so you don't pick it up immediately if you draw again.
  6. Say "peel" once you have used all your tiles. Every player must draw 1 new tile from the bunch. Someone else may use all their letters first, in which case you still must draw a new tile when they say "peel."[6]
    Play Bananagrams Step 6.jpg
    • It's always a good idea to double-check all your words are valid and spelled correctly before peeling.
    • An effective strategy is to "peel" as fast as possible, several times in a row. An influx of new tiles may slow your opponents down!
  7. Incorporate the new tile into your grid of words. Tiles can be rearranged in any way you want once you've drawn a new tile. Once you've used the tile, you can yell "peel" again.
    Play Bananagrams Step 7.jpg
    • In this example, the player has a newly drawn T. By replacing the D in FOOD with the T and creating FOOT, the player was able to place the D at the end of TIE to make TIED, effectively using all of his or her tiles.
    • Two letter words like QI, IT, and OE are useful placeholders for new letters until you can work them into a larger word.
  8. Continue peeling until the bunch has fewer tiles than the number of players. For example: Player 1 peels, and after all 5 players have drawn a new tile, there are only 4 tiles left in the bunch. At this point, the first person to use up all their tiles in their word grid wins the game.[7]
    Play Bananagrams Step 8.jpg
    • Sometimes, the number of tiles divides evenly among players. If this is the case, you'll end up with no tiles left in the bunch after the final peel.
  9. Yell "bananas" if you are the first player to use up all your tiles. Since there are no more tiles in the bunch to draw, the game is now over. The player who called "Bananas!" first is the winner.[8]
    Play Bananagrams Step 9.jpg
    • If 2 players yell "Bananas!" at the same time, you have a tie. In this case, the player with the longest word in their grid can be declared the winner—but you can also come up with another house rule to determine the tie-breaker.
  10. Inspect the winning grid for disqualifying words. If the player has used any illegal words, then someone says "Rotten banana!" and the player is disqualified. Their tiles are mixed up and added back to the bunch, and play resumes the same way.[9]
    Play Bananagrams Step 10.jpg
    • When the number of tiles left in the bunch is fewer than the remaining players, the first person to use up all their tiles again exclaims "Bananas!" Their grid should be inspected for disqualifying words as well. If they are all correct, this player is the winner!

EditTrying Alternate Versions

  1. Play with no peeling or dumping for a slower-paced version of the game. Start by dividing all the tiles equally among players. Each player flips over their tiles at the start of the game and tries to create a grid of interlocking words using all their tiles. When one player uses all their letters, they call "Bananas!" and the game is over—assuming that player doesn't have any disqualifying words in their grid.[10]
    Play Bananagrams Step 11.jpg
    • If the game ends in a tie or a stalemate, with no one able to use all their letters, the winner is the player with the longest word in their grid.
  2. Do not allow peeling for a very quick version of the game. Have each player draw 21 tiles from the pouch and place them face down in front of them. Then, play Bananagrams the usual way—but without peeling. Players can still dump. The first player to incorporate all 21 letters into a word grid and yell "Bananas!" is the winner.[11]
    Play Bananagrams Step 12.jpg
    • This alternative is great for waiting in restaurants or doctor's offices.
  3. Try a solitaire version of Bananagrams to hone your skills. Place all the tiles facedown, then flip over 21 tiles. Start a timer and play as usual, although there's no need to call out "peel" or "dump" to alert other players. Once you've used all the tiles, stop the timer.[12]
    Play Bananagrams Step 13.jpg
    • Then, repeat to see if you can beat your own best time.
    • Or, challenge yourself by trying to create a grid using the fewest words possible. Look for longer, more complex words that you can play.
  4. Play cooperatively to develop concentration and reading ability. This version of Bananagrams is great for children and helps them practice their reading and spelling skills. Start by placing all the tiles face up. Then, all players help in creating one large interlocking word grid. You can take turns, or play freely and allow anyone who has an idea to play a word.[13]
    Play Bananagrams Step 14.jpg
    • The game is over when all the tiles have been used to create one big grid. There are no winners in this version!

EditVideo

EditTips

  • With a group of people that's larger than 8, use 2 sets of Bananagram tiles in order to avoid overly short games. Your tiles will get mixed up, so make sure to sort them back out at the end.

EditThings You'll Need

  • Table or floor
  • 2-8 players
  • Bananagrams tiles

How to Throw a Fourth of July Party

Posted: 01 Jul 2019 05:00 PM PDT

The Fourth of July is always a fun and festive time. Warm summer weather, cookouts with friends and family, and fireworks all make the day memorable. With a few simple decorations and picnic-friendly food, you can organize your own Fourth of July celebration to commemorate this patriotic holiday.

EditSteps

EditPlanning the Party

  1. Send out invitations 3-4 weeks before the party. Avoid waiting until the last minute to invite friends and family. They might have made other plans for the day and won't be able to make it.
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 1 Version 3.jpg
    • If you are mailing your invites, send them at least 4 weeks in advance to allow for potential delivery delays.
    • Alternatively, you can send free electronic invitations through an online site like Evite.[1] Electronic invites are great when time is running out because they'll arrive almost immediately!
  2. Tidy up your house and yard. Make sure your guests will be comfortable by cleaning your home and completing any necessary yard work a few days prior to the party.
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 2 Version 3.jpg
  3. Borrow additional seating if needed. Depending on how many people you've invited to your Fourth of July celebration, you might need more seating or tables. Save some money and borrow what you can from friends or neighbors.[2]
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • Lawn chairs and folding tables work great both inside and outdoors.
    • You can also encourage your guests to bring picnic blankets to sit on outside.
  4. Develop a contingency plan for inclement weather. Make plans ahead of time to move the party indoors in case the weather turns bad on the Fourth of July.
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 4 Version 3.jpg
    • Push furniture against the walls, if needed, to create more space for guests to mingle inside.
    • Choose an alternate cooking method for any food that would have been grilled outside. Indoor griddles or grill pans are one option.
    • Plan to watch a televised fireworks display if rain or thunderstorms prevent you from doing your own fireworks or attending another live show.

EditChoosing the Food

  1. Purchase affordable easy-to-grill foods. Hot dogs and burgers are great options for a Fourth of July cookout. In fact, the Fourth happens to be the most popular holiday for serving hot dogs![3] For the burgers, you can buy frozen hamburger patties in bulk to save money and time.[4]
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 5 Version 3.jpg
    • Consider including a vegetarian alternative, such as veggie burgers, for guests who don't eat meat.
    • Steak and seafood are delicious options but cost a lot more. Keep your party economical and stick to burgers and hot dogs.
  2. Ask guests to bring a snack or side dish to share. You can save money on food by having guests bring something to pass around. Ideas include chips, baked beans, salad, or dessert. Guests can even bring drinks or ice.
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 6 Version 3.jpg
  3. Organize a potluck. A fun way to get everyone involved in your Fourth of July party is to have a potluck in which everyone brings a dish to share. Your guests can bring something they like and everyone can enjoy the fun of discovering the different foods.
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • A potluck can save you a lot of time and money since everyone is contributing a dish. [5]
    • You can still grill hot dogs and hamburgers as your contribution to the potluck or you can do something else and skip the grilling.
  4. Choose easy desserts in festive colors or shapes. You can add to the festive Fourth of July theme by creating desserts that are red, white, and blue.
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Serve strawberries and blueberries with whipped cream for an easy red, white, and blue treat.
    • Use star-shaped cookie cutters to cut star shapes out of angel food cake, then top with whipped cream and strawberries and blueberries.
    • Order or make your own American flag cookies or cake.
  5. Buy all of the food you will be serving ahead of time. Avoid the stress of last-minute shopping and begin purchasing the food for your party within the week leading up to the Fourth of July.
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 9 Version 2.jpg

EditSelecting the Decorations

  1. Stick to simple decorations. Decorating your home and/or yard for the Fourth of July is fun and a great way to create a festive atmosphere. You don't have to do anything elaborate, though. Visit a dollar store for affordable decorations, such as red, white, and blue pinwheels and streamers or mini American flags.[6]
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • Cut star shapes out of red, white, and blue construction paper. Punch a hole at the top of each one, tie a string through the hole, and hang around the house or yard.
  2. Purchase white supplies for eating. Red, white, and blue plates and napkins are certainly patriotic, but they tend to cost more than plain white supplies. Stick to white plastic cutlery, paper plates, and napkins to save money.[7] Your decorations will be enough to create a festive atmosphere.

  3. Let the kids do the decorating. Providing materials for the kids to decorate will keep them entertained during the day while awaiting the evening fireworks display.

    • Use white butcher paper as tablecloths and let the kids decorate it [8] with red, white, and blue crayons or markers.
    • Have the kids draw pictures of colorful fireworks and display them around the house or yard.

EditArranging the Entertainment

  1. Set up an outdoor game area. You don't have to wait until the evening fireworks to have fun on the Fourth of July. Have some outdoor activities available to entertain your guests during the day while you eat and socialize.

    • Set up a volleyball or badminton net.
    • Borrow, build, or buy a cornhole game[9] (also known as a bean bag toss). This is great for adults and kids.
    • Borrow a croquet set if you don't have one.[10]
    • Provide a few frisbees for guests to toss around.
  2. Purchase an inexpensive kiddie pool or slip and slide. A small plastic kiddie pool is an easy way to keep the kids entertained and refreshed during the day. Slip and slides can be fun for kids and adults alike!
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 14 Version 2.jpg
  3. Provide sparklers for everyone. Use sparklers once it starts getting dark. Kids and adults can both enjoy them while waiting for the fireworks display.
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 15 Version 2.jpg
  4. Make a fireworks plan. You can choose to light your own fireworks, attend your local fireworks show, or watch a televised fireworks display.[11]
Throw a Fourth of July Party Step 16 Version 2.jpg
    • Only light off your own fireworks if it is legal where you live.
    • Practice safety when lighting your own fireworks and have buckets of water or a running hose close by in case of fire.

EditTips

  • Encourage guests to contribute to the party by bringing a snack or side dish to share.
  • Provide plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained during the day.
  • Make sure it is legal to light fireworks in your area if you plan to do so.

EditWarnings

  • Fireworks can cause burns or start fires. Have water ready and a first aid kit nearby.
  • Do not light off fireworks in your yard if it is not legal where you live.

EditThings You'll Need

  • Food and beverages
  • Festive decorations
  • Activities for children and adults
  • Fireworks or other entertainment
  • First aid kit

Newly unsealed court documents reveal additional allegations against Andy Rubin

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 04:30 PM PDT

Newly unsealed documents have revealed a spate of bombshell allegations against Android founder Andy Rubin. BuzzFeed's Ryan Mac has made the documents available as a PDF, and there's a lot to unpack.

The nearly 40 pages detail a pre-marital agreement made with Rubin's now-ex-wife, Rie Hirabaru Rubin, three days before their wedding. The documents refer to the agreement as "unconscionable, capping spousal support and stripping Plaintiff of her community property rights under California law without informed consent."

“This is a family law dispute involving a wife who regrets her decision to execute a prenuptial agreement," Rubin's attorney said in a statement to TechCrunch. "It is full of false claims and we look forward to telling our side of the story.”

The Essential Phone and Playground Global founder has largely operated in the background since The New York Times published an explosive story in late-2018 detailing sexual misconduct and massive severance package from his former employer, Google.

The documents go on to allege that her attorney, Stephen Peters, had previously represented Rubin in a prior divorce without her knowledge. This lawsuit seeks to make that prenuptial agreement invalid.

"Plaintiff was not aware of this pre-existing attorney-client relationship or the extent of Peters’ detailed knowledge regarding Rubin’s property and assets which were not fully disclosed at the time," according to the document, "his detailed knowledge of Rubin’s extravagant payments to women or sex or that Peters was in reality working for the benefit of Rubin, and to the Plaintiff's detriment."

Allegations of Rubin's improprieties echo many of the claims reported in the 2018 Times piece, including, “ownership relationships […] whereby Rubin would pay for their expenses in exchange for offering them to other men."

Over the last several months, Rubin and his ex-wife have been battling in court regarding whether or not the complaint would remain sealed. In April, a California state judge tentatively concluded that small portions of the complaint could be sealed. In May, the plaintiff argued that much of the material in the complaint had already been reported and that there was a notable public interest in the case. For example, Rubin’s alleged payments to women for sex — in the sum of hundreds of thousands of dollars — has already been reported and is relevant to the plaintiff’s case, she argued.

“Rubin hid these payments from Plaintiff during their marriage by using his individual bank account and routing payments through his wholly owned company Cosmofion LLC,” the plaintiff states in a court filing. “These allegations show, and the evidence at trial will prove, that Rubin was highly motivated to coerce and defraud Plaintiff to enter into an unconscionable Premarital Agreement so that he would be able to conceal and continue to engage in these illicit sexual activities and continue to make payments of hundreds of thousands of dollars to these women without being detected by Plaintiff.”

Regarding the parts of the document that remain under seal, the judge ruled they either involve post-marital allegations and/or information that is covered by a stipulated protective order.

KKR has acquired Corel (including its recent acquisition Parallels), reportedly for $1B+

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 04:25 PM PDT

Only six months after snapping up virtualization specialist Parallels, Canadian software company Corel is itself getting acquired. TechCrunch has learned and confirmed with multiple sources that private equity giant KKR has closed a deal to buy the company from Vector Capital, which has owned some or all of Corel since 2003.

KKR’s interest in Corel was first rumored in May, when PE Hub reported the two were in talks for a sale valued at over $1 billion. At the time, representatives of Corel declined to comment, although our sources inside the company indicated that the reports were not inaccurate.

Fast-forward to today, and both KKR and and a spokesperson for Parallels/Corel declined to comment. But, we now have a copy of the memo provided by an internal source that has been sent out to staff announcing that the deal has indeed closed, and that Corel is now officially part of the KKR family of companies.

According to the memo, KKR is very optimistic about Corel’s prospects. It plans to give Corel an “infusion of capital” to accelerate its growth, which will go into two areas. First will be expanding operations for the existing business: Corel is the company behind a number of longstanding software brands including WordPerfect, Corel Draw, WinZip, PaintShop Pro. Second will be making acquisitions (and the sheer proliferation of promising startups in the last decade dedicated to all variety of apps and other software that may have found it a challenge to scale means Corel could have rich pickings).

There are no layoffs planned as part of the deal, and the official announcement had been planned to go out next week, but now looks like it may be moved up to tomorrow (Wednesday).

Vector and Corel itself have never publicly disclosed much on user numbers or financials, but Vector has described the company as “highly profitable,” with dividends of more than $300 million to date. The memo we’ve seen notes that Corel (including Parallels) has millions of customers across its various software platforms and apps.

The acquisition of Corel by KKR marks another chapter in the company’s long corporate history.

Founded in the 1980s — when personal computers were just starting to enter the mainstream but well before we had anything like the internet (not to mention the world of cloud-based apps) that we know today — Corel once positioned itself as a potential competitor to Microsoft in the software wars.

When Corel purchased WordPerfect from Novel in 1996, Corel founder Michael Cowpland viewed the software package as an integral part of that rivalry, describing it as the Pepsi to Microsoft's Coke — that is, Word.

Microsoft proved the mightier of the two, and it even eventually signed a partnership with Corel that saw it investing in the company: a sell out, as one disappointed Canadian journalist described it at the time. The two have also sparred over patents.

Corel, which went public early in its life, got battered in the first dot-com bust (which was not helped by an insider trading scandal that led to Cowpland’s departure). Vector stepped in and took it private in 2003.

After restructuring the company, Vector listed Corel again in 2006. But, amid another recession that again hit Corel hard, it once more took it private in 2010. In the intervening years, Corel has been focused on modernising its offerings, bringing in e-commerce, direct downloads, subscriptions and acquisitions to bring the company’s products and wider business closer to how consumers and workers use computers today.

Parallels was a part of that strategy: its products help people work seamlessly across multiple platforms, letting employees (and IT managers) run a unified workflow regardless of the device or operating system, with Parallels providing support for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Chromebook, Linux, Raspberry Pi and cloud — a timely offering in the current, fragmented IT market.

If the $1 billion+ figure is accurate, that strategy seems to have worked: across the two times that Vector took Corel private, it never paid more than $124 million for the company (the second time, as its stock was tanking, it paid just $30 million).

Another major theater chain is reportedly working on a MoviePass competitor

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 02:08 PM PDT

Movie ticket subscription services have had a tough time of it. The two largest names in the business — MoviePass and Sinemia — have been waging what looks to have been a mostly losing battle in the war to reinvigorate box office sales. The category has been plagued by mind-boggling cash burn rates and disastrous customer service.

AMC's A-List service, on the other hand, appears to be moving along swimmingly. In May, it hit 785,000 subscribers, effectively tripling MoviePass' most recent numbers, according to a report. Of course, AMC has one key thing the competition doesn't: its own theaters. That means, among other things, that the company operates with far fewer middlemen.

According to a new report from Deadline, Regal is also set to get into the subscription business. As of last year, the Tennessee-based chain is No. 2 in the U.S., with 558 theaters to AMC's 659, which means it has similar infrastructural support in place. The plan would be tiered, giving premium subscribers access to all theaters in the chain, with another plan cutting that down to about half of its locations (which would cut out access to locations in big cities like LA and NYC).

Like AMC's offering, the deal would also offer discounts on some concessions — deals on $20 buckets of popcorn are another advantage theater chains have over third-parties like MoviePass and Sinemia. The plans are reportedly set to launch at the end of the month, as soon as Regal's parent company has worked out the finer details with studios.

Uber Eats invades restaurants with Dine-In option

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 02:03 PM PDT

Tired of cleaning up after take-out or getting hangry waiting at your table in restaurants? Well Uber Eats is barging into the dine-in business. A new option in some cities lets you order your food ahead of time, go to the restaurant, then sit down inside to eat, a tipster from competing dine-in app Allset tells us. We tested it, and Uber Eats Dine-In even waives the standard Uber delivery and service fees.

Adding Dine-In lets Uber Eats insert itself into more food transactions, expand to restaurants that care about presentation and don't do delivery and avoid paying drivers while earning low-overhead revenue. Uber's Dine-In option is now available in some cities, including Austin, Dallas, Phoenix and San Diego, where it could save diners time and fees while helping restaurants fill empty tables and waiters earn tips. But it also could coerce more restaurants to play ball with UberEats if their competitors do, eating into their margins.

UberEats Dine In Option

Uber confirmed the existence of the Dine-In option, telling me, “We’re always thinking about new ways to enhance the Eats experience.” They also verified there are no delivery or service fees, and restaurants get 100% of tips left in-app by users. However, we found some items were silently marked up from restaurants’ listed prices in both Uber Eats Delivery and Dine-In options, which could help it make some money directly from these purchases. We also discovered this buried Uber Help Center FAQ with more details.

Uber has been rapidly experimenting with Uber Eats, trying discounted specials, Uber Eats Pool, where you pay less for slower delivery, and $9.99 unlimited delivery subscriptions. It’s steadily becoming an omnivore.

How Uber Dine-In Works

Dine-in appears next to the Delivery and Pick-Up options across the top of the Uber Eats app in select cities. You can choose to go eat "ASAP" or in some cases schedule when you want to arrive and sit down. You'll be shown how long the food will take to prep, distance to the restaurant, your price and the restaurant's rating. You'll then be notified as the order is prepared and approaches readiness. Then you just deliver yourself to the restaurant and add a tip in-app or on the table.

Uber Eats should obviously make it easy for you to hail an Uber with the restaurant as the pre-set destination. An Uber spokesperson called that a good idea but not something it’s doing yet. Back in 2016, Uber tried a merchant-sponsored rides option where you’d get a rebate on your travel if you spent money at a given store. You could imagine restaurants that want to show off their ambiance giving customers some money back if they come across town to eat there.

Uber Dine In

The new feature could spell trouble for other dine-in apps like Allset that's been in the business for four years. Users might also opt for Uber Eats Dine-In over restaurant reservation apps like OpenTable and Resy. Why waste time waiting to order and for your food to be cooked when you could just show up as it comes out of the oven?

“I think that more delivery players will be tapping into dine-in space. It's all about convenience and time saving. But it's going to be very difficult for them, given their focus on delivery,” Allset CEO Stas Matviyenko said of Uber becoming a competitor. He believes dedicated apps for different modes of dining will succeed. But Uber Eats’ ubiquity and its one-stop-shop model for all your dining needs could make it stickier than a dine-in only app you use less frequently.

UberEatsheader

With Dine-In, Uber could aid restaurants that are empty at the start or end of their open hours. Last year we reported that Uber Eats was giving restaurants prominence in a Featured section of the app to drive up demand if they offered discounts to customers. Similarly, Uber could let restaurants entice more Dine-In customers, especially when foot-traffic was slow, by providing discounts on food or subsidized Uber transportation. Better to knock a dollar or two off an entree if it means filling the restaurant at 5:30 or 9:30 pm.

And now that Uber Eats does delivery, take-out and dine-in, it’d make perfect sense to offer traditional restaurant reservations through the app as well. That would pit it directly against OpenTable, Resy and Yelp. Instead of trying to own a single use case that might only appeal to certain demographics in certain situations, Uber Eats’ strategy is crystallizing: be the app you open whenever you’re hungry.

From seed to Series A: Scaling a startup in Latin America today

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 02:00 PM PDT

It's not easy to raise growth-stage capital in Latin America, but it's getting easier. As startups begin to flourish in the region's largest markets, available funding is evolving to suit the needs of these maturing companies. However, Silicon Valley-style Series A rounds in Latin America are still rare, especially outside of Brazil and Mexico.

Even in Silicon Valley, only a small percentage of startups can bring together enough pieces to raise a Series A round. Jacob Mullins, a partner at Shasta Ventures, recently published an article on Medium on what it takes to raise a Series A round in San Francisco today, which inspired my take for the Latin American ecosystem.

In the piece, he lays out the table stakes for any startup looking to raise Series A capital, including product-market fit, a strong revenue model, 2x or 3x YOY growth, a data-driven go-to-market strategy, a compelling market opportunity, a great team and a great story. These prerequisites apply to startups anywhere in the world. However, if these requirements are the minimum needed for a Series A in San Francisco, startups outside of the Valley, including in Latin America, will have to work even harder.

Latin America's exceptional growth in VC funding over the past 12 months speaks to the growing number of later-stage rounds startups are raising across the region. 2018 was Latin America's inflection point for startups, with four big trends:

Record-breaking rounds: Mexico's Grin Scooters raised Latin America's largest seed round, and Brazilian bike and scooter-sharing startup Yellow raised Latin America's largest Series A round to date (then they merged!). Food delivery startup Rappi became Colombia's first unicorn, raising $200 million (and then $1 billion from SoftBank shortly thereafter), and Brazil's iFood also raised $400 million, one of Latin America's biggest rounds ever.

A closer examination reveals patterns in what it takes to raise scale capital in the Latin American market today.

Soaring Asian investment: Brazil's most popular ride-hailing app, 99, was acquired by Didi Chuxing, China's version of Uber . Tencent invested in Brazilian fintech Nubank; Ant Financial invested in Brazilian POS company StoneCo; SoftBank invested in Brazil's logistics provider Loggi, Brazil's Gympass and Colombia's largest hotel chain, Ayenda Rooms. SoftBank also committed a $5 billion fund for Latin America, outstripping all previous funds by an order of magnitude.

Exits to Latin American and U.S. corporates: Chilean-Mexican grocery delivery startup Cornershop went to Walmart for $225 million and e-commerce company Linio was acquired by Falabella for $138 million. These deals reveal a growing concern from large companies in Latin America about competition from startups.

More YC grads: Latin America sent at least 10 startups to the Y Combinator, and many more to other international accelerators, in the past year. These companies include Grin, Higia, Truora, Keynua, The Podcast App, SkyDrop, UBits, Cuenca, BrainHi, Pachama, Calii, Cuanto, Pronto and Fintual.

2018 really was a breakout year for Latin American startups.

So who is raising Series A rounds in the region?

Within the list of 30 or so companies that have managed to raise a Series A in Latin America in the past year, most of the startups fit into a few categories. There is also significant overlap between the investors who are pursuing tickets of this size, most of whom are located in major markets like Mexico and Brazil, or have offices in Silicon Valley. A closer examination of these startups reveals patterns in what it takes to raise scale capital in the Latin American market today.

Copycats

Copycats — or startups that copy a successful business model from another market — are a good business in Latin America. Among those to raise Series A rounds within the past year were:

  • Grin and Yellow (now Grow Mobility): Bird/Lime clones raised $150 million as Grow Mobility from GGV Capital and Monashees.

  • LentesPlus: 1-800-Contacts clone raised $5 million from Palm Drive Capital, with participation from IGNIA and InQLab.

  • Mercadoni: Instacart clone raised $9 million from Movile.

  • Uala and Albo: Monzo/Revolut clones raised $10 million from Soros, Greyhound Capital, Recharge Capital and Point 72 Ventures, and $7.4 million from Omidyar, Greyhound and Mountain Nazca, respectively.

International investors often see copycat models as less risky, because the model has been tested before.

Logistics and last-mile delivery

Brazil's CargoX, the "Uber for trucks," is leading the market for logistics solutions in Latin America, receiving international investment from Valor Capital and NXTP Labs starting in their first round. They have also received funding from Soros, Goldman Sachs and Blackstone in later rounds. Recently, logistics startups like Colombia's Liftit and Mexico's Skydrop have raised multimillion-dollar rounds from Silicon Valley investors, including IFC, Monashees, MercadoLibre Fund, Variv Capital, Sierra Ventures and Sinai Ventures . Startups like Rappi, Loggi and Mandaê have also raised Series A rounds, and beyond.

Brazilian startups

In many ways, the Brazilian market operates separately from the rest of Latin America, and not only because of the language difference. Brazil has Brazil-centric funds and its startups follow their own rules, because the market is big enough to accommodate companies that only operate locally. Brazil also receives a majority of international VC funding and has produced a significant portion of Latin America's unicorns.

Brazilian (and some Mexican) startups in edtech, healthtech and fintech, including Neon, Sanar, Mosyle, UnoDosTres and Nexoos, raised Series A rounds in 2018. Key investors included Quona Capital, e.Bricks Ventures, Elephant and Peak Ventures. Brazilian startups tend to scale more quickly at all sizes; Creditas and Loggi were able to raise their Series A in 2016 and 2014 respectively. In 2018, they were already raising $55 million at Series C and $100 million+ Series D from investors such as Vostok Emerging Capital, Kaszek Ventures, IFC, Naspers and SoftBank. However, startups in these industries in other Latin American countries might not find it as easy to raise larger rounds.

How much to raise in a Latin American Series A

Latin American valuations are noticeably lower than their Silicon Valley equivalents. A Series A round in a small or medium Latin American market like Chile or Colombia might end up looking a lot like a San Francisco seed round. Valuations and amount are bifurcated: those that have access to Silicon Valley-style capital can get higher valuations and bigger checks (still lower and smaller than the U.S.), while those that don't have access have lower valuations.

The startup's team, story and revenue model should all align to create an unbeatable business.

Outside of Brazil or Mexico, startups should not expect to raise more than $5 million in a Series A, even if they are receiving co-investments from the U.S. The average Series A round in the U.S. hit $11.29 million in 2018; however, the top 10% of deals averaged more than $60 million.

In Latin America, a Series A could range from as little as $1 million to around $10 million in most countries. Brazil and Mexico might break the mold, but startups looking for growth capital in Latin America should not expect to raise more than $5 million if they are not in a massive market. For example, Chile's Destacame raised $3 million in their Series A from Chilean funds in early 2019. By comparison, Brazil's Neon raised $22 million in their Series A in the same year. While these are different industries and comparing apples to oranges, the orders of magnitude seem right.

If we compare in the same industry but different years, the results are similar. Nubank's Series A in 2014, led by Sequoia Capital, was $14.3 million. Neobanks in smaller markets, like albo and Uala, raised $7.4 million and $10 million, respectively, in their Series A rounds.

To date, the largest Series A raised in the region went to Yellow, Brazil's bike-share and e-scooter company, created by the founders of 99, Ariel Lambrecht, Eduardo Musa, and Renato Freitas. Yellow raised a $63 million Series A within a year after launch, then merged with Mexico's Grin Scooters.

Where to look for investment: Latin America or USA?

There are still very few entirely Latin American funds investing at Series A. Most of the time, Latin American startups must look to Mexico and Brazil, or beyond the region to Asia and the U.S., to fund rounds beyond the seed stage.

Within Latin America, some of the actors in this investment sector include Brazil's Monashees and Valor Capital, Argentina's Kaszek Ventures, Peru and Mexico's Angel Ventures and Mexico's ALLVP, MITA Ventures and Ignia. Startups might also find Series A-level investment from major regional tech leaders who are scouting acquisition opportunities, like Movile's investment in Mercadoni. Movile is Brazil's leader in mobile technology, with a mission to impact one billion people, following in the footsteps of China's giant conglomerate, Tencent. Movile has invested in and acquired many Latin American startups to increase their mobile offerings for its customers.

While some funds in Latin America participate in investments of this scale, most Latin American startups target at least a part of their Series A rounds from outside the region. Latin American startups have been able to reach U.S. VCs in one of three ways: through top-tier accelerators, by selling to consumers in the U.S. market or by taking on a copycat model. U.S.-based VCs Accel Partners, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Base10, Liquid2 Ventures, Quona Capital, QED, IFC and Sierra Ventures have all made multiple contributions to Series A rounds in Latin America within the past year.

Raising a Series A round in Latin America today

Raising a Series A round anywhere means checking a lot of boxes. Beyond bringing a great product to market, the startup's team, story and revenue model should all align to create an unbeatable business. In Latin America, raising a Series A also means knowing where to look for capital, and which models are receiving funding.

Although there is no instruction manual for raising a Series A anywhere, following in the footsteps of companies that have done so successfully can be a wise way to start. Latin America's Series A success stories outline a list of investors that are interested in this stage, as well as how much they are investing in Latin American companies. Founders can use this information to structure their fundraising efforts and optimize their time to raise a Series A and continue to scale.

Tesla sets new delivery record of 95,200 electric vehicles

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 01:44 PM PDT

Tesla delivered 95,200 of its electric vehicles in the second quarter, a dramatic reversal from a disappointing first period that set a new record and beat analysts’ expectations.

Analysts expected Tesla to deliver 91,000 vehicles during the second quarter, according to estimates compiled by FactSet.

The record-breaking figures stand in stark contrast to the company’s first quarter delivery numbers when it reported deliveries of 63,000 vehicles, nearly a one-third drop from the previous period. The low numbers signaled what was to come: wider-than-expected loss of $702 million driven by disappointing delivery numbers, costs and pricing adjustments to its vehicles.

The second quarter, at least in terms of deliveries, is giving a rosier view of the company and possibly its earnings, which have yet to be reported.

Tesla also reported that it produced 87,048 vehicles in the second quarter compared to 77,100 in the previous period. The second-quarter production figure also beats the company’s fourth quarter stats of 86,555 vehicles.

tesla q2 deliveries

Tesla reported that it made “significant progress” streamlining its global logistics and delivery operations at higher volumes — a major pinch point for the company. Tesla said this has improved cost efficiencies and improvements to their working capital position.

The company also signaled that this record would not be a blip. Orders in the second quarter exceeded deliveries, which means Tesla is entering the third quarter with a backlog.

Customer vehicles in transit at the end of the quarter were more than 7,400, according to Tesla. The company says it doesn’t plan to disclose the customer vehicles in transit metric going forward.

Sam Lessin and Andrew Kortina on their voice assistant’s workplace pivot

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:30 PM PDT

Sam Lessin, a former product management executive at Facebook and old friend to Mark Zuckerberg, incorporated his latest startup under the name “Fin Exploration Company.”

Why? Well, because he wanted to explore. The company — co-founded alongside Andrew Kortina, best known for launching the successful payments app Venmo — was conceived as a consumer voice assistant in 2015 after the two entrepreneurs realized the impact 24/7 access to a virtual assistant would have on their digital to-do lists.

The thing is, developing an AI assistant capable of booking flights, arranging trips, teaching users how to play poker, identifying places to purchase specific items for a birthday party and answering wide-ranging zany questions like “can you look up a place where I can milk a goat?” requires a whole lot more human power than one might think. Capital-intensive and hard-to-scale, an app for “instantly offloading” chores wasn’t the best business. Neither Lessin nor Kortina will admit to failure, but Fin‘s excursion into B2B enterprise software eight months ago suggests the assistant technology wasn’t a billion-dollar idea.

Staying true to its name, the Fin Exploration Company is exploring again.

Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ comes to Roblox ahead of its July 4 premiere

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:08 PM PDT

Netflix is bringing its hit TV show Stranger Things to Roblox. On Monday, Roblox announced the launch of limited-time, Stranger Things-themed items that will be made available to its more than 90 million players, who can earn them by solving daily riddles and puzzles. Other free, limited-time items like a “Scoops Ahoy” hat and Demogorgon mask will also be offered as virtual items for players’ Roblox avatars.

The first of the two themed items are live now and will be free to download through July 12. Four more items can be unlocked by solving daily riddles and puzzles, with a new clue arriving each day ahead of the July 4 premiere of Stranger Things Season 3.

Roblox will also share clues across its social media accounts on FacebookTwitter and Instagram, it says.

What’s interesting about the Roblox integration is that it may reach children younger than those ages 14 and up — the ages that the series itself is rated for (TV-14). (Likely, some braver tweens are already familiar with the show and are watching alongside mom or dad… or at least with their approval.)

However, the Roblox partnership is only one of several gaming-focused initiatives Netflix has planned to market some of its most anticipated programming, including both Stranger Things and other titles.

At this year’s E3, Netflix detailed a series of gaming initiatives, including integrations with partners like Ubisoft, Behavior Interactive and even Fortnite, in addition to Roblox. Already, some Fortnite players had found the “Scoops Ahoy” Easter egg back when Season 9 launched, Netflix said.

Plus, the company is preparing not one but two new Stranger Things-themed games. The first, called Stranger Things 3: The Game, will launch across platforms including Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, Android and iOS on the same day the third season premieres. Like its predecessor, also by developer BonusXP, the game is meant to be a companion to the current season and features 16-bit action for a nostalgic feel.

Next year, Netflix is planning another new Stranger Things title, with a mobile game for iOS and Android. This one is a location-based RPG/puzzler where players explore The Upside Down hidden all around them, while working with other players to “overcome its emerging evils.”

Netflix is also preparing to launch on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Mac a turn-based tactics game adapted from the Netflix Original series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

A wave of digital marketing isn’t entirely new for the streaming service.

In the past, it toyed with mobile experiences to advertise its shows — like the standalone Orange is the New Black app it launched back in 2014, or the "FakeBlock" app introduced to advertise the new season of Arrested Development.

The company also toyed around with a cross between games and TV with the 2018 launch of Minecraft: Story Mode, which some could consider a form of gaming. Netflix, however, did not. It even claimed at the time that the company did not have any plans “to get into gaming.”

Well, that’s no longer true.

While many of the integrations and games themselves are built by partnered developers, Netflix is clearly involved. And unlike the throwaway apps from years prior, these are more series efforts on Netflix’s part — not just promotional vehicles for its shows.

The marketing doesn’t stop at digital games either.

Netflix’s Stranger Things is more than just a show, it’s a whole business unto itself. It’s Baskin-Robbins ice cream flavors, and Target exclusives like a Stranger Things bike, toys and apparel. It’s posters, games and all kinds of other merch, too. And that’s just one show. An analyst previously said Netflix’s merch biz could be a billion-dollar addition to the company’s revenue.

Beyond gaming and other stuff to buy, the Stranger Things empire extends to brand deals with Coke, Levi’s, H&M, Nike, Eggo, Schwinn, Trivial Pursuit, Burger King and more.

The Roblox and Fortnite integrations are live now. The Season 3-themed game arrives July 4.

NASA picks a dozen science and tech projects to bring to the surface of the Moon

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:01 PM PDT

With the Artemis mission scheduled to put boots on lunar regolith as soon as 2024, NASA has a lot of launching to do — and you can be sure none of those launches will go to waste. The agency just announced 12 new science and technology projects to send to the Moon’s surface, including a new rover.

The 12 projects are being sent up as part of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, which is — as NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine has emphasized strongly — part of an intentional increase in reliance on private companies. If a company already has a component or rover or craft ready to go and meeting a program’s requirements, why should NASA build it from scratch at great cost?

In this case, the selected projects cover a wide range of origins and intentions. Some are repurposed or spare parts from other missions, like the Lunar Surface Electromagnetics Experiment. LuSEE is related to the Park Solar Probe’s STEREO/Waves instrument and pieces from MAVEN, re-engineered to make observations and measurements on the Moon.

moonrangerOthers are quite new. Astrobotic, which was also recently awarded an $80 million contract to develop its Peregrine lunar lander, will now also be putting together a rover, which it calls MoonRanger (no relation to the NES game). This little bot will autonomously traverse the landscape within half a mile or so of its base and map it in 3D.

The new funding from NASA amounts to $5.6 million, which isn’t a lot to develop a lunar rover from scratch — no doubt it’s using its own funds and working with its partner, Carnegie Mellon University, to make sure the rover isn’t a bargain-bin device. With veteran rover engineer Red Whittaker on board, it should be a good one.

“MoonRanger offers a means to accomplish far-ranging science of significance, and will exhibit an enabling capability on missions to the Moon for NASA and the commercial sector. The autonomy techniques demonstrated by MoonRanger will enable new kinds exploration missions that will ultimately herald in a new era on the Moon,” said Whittaker in an Astrobotic news release.

The distance to the lunar surface isn’t so far that controlling a rover directly from the surface is nearly impossible, like on Mars, but if it can go from here to there without someone in Houston twiddling a joystick, why shouldn’t it?

To be clear, this is different from the upcoming CubeRover project and others that are floating around in Astrobotic and Whittaker’s figurative orbits.

“MoonRanger is a 13 kg microwave-sized rover with advanced autonomous capabilities,” Astrobotic’s Mike Provenzano told me. “The CubeRover is a 2 kg shoebox-sized rover developed for light payloads and geared for affordable science and exploration activities.”

While both have flight contracts, CubeRover is scheduled to go up on the first Peregrine mission in 2021, while MoonRanger is TBD.

Another NASA selection is the Planetary Science Institute’s Heimdall, a new camera system that will point downward during the lander’s descent and collect super-high-resolution imagery of the regolith before, during and after landing.

heimdall

“The camera system will return the highest resolution images of the undisturbed lunar surface yet obtained, which is important for understanding regolith properties. We will be able to essentially video the landing in high resolution for the first time, so we can understand how the plume behaves – how far it spreads, how long particles are lofted. This information is crucial for the safety of future landings,” said the project’s R. Aileen Yingst in a PSI release.

The regolith is naturally the subject of much curiosity, since if we’re to establish a semi-permanent presence on the Moon we’ll have to deal with it one way or another. So projects like Honeybee’s PlanetVac, which can suck up and test materials right at landing, or the Regolith Adherence Characterization, which will see how the stuff sticks to various materials, will be invaluable.

RadSatg Deployed w Crop

RadSat-G deployed from the ISS for its year-long mission to test radiation tolerance on its computer systems

Several projects are continuations of existing projects that are great fits for lunar missions. For example, the lunar surface is constantly being bombarded with all kinds of radiation, since the Moon lacks any kind of atmosphere. That’s not a problem for machinery like wheels or even solar cells, but for computers, radiation can be highly destructive. So Brock LaMere’s work in radiation-tolerant computers will be highly relevant to landers, rovers and payloads.

LaMere’s work has already been tested in space via the Nanoracks facility aboard the International Space Station, and the new NASA funding will allow it to be tested on the lunar surface. If we’re going to be sending computers up there that people’s lives will depend on, we better be completely sure they aren’t going to crash because of a random EM flux.

The rest of the projects are characterized here, with varying degrees of detail. No doubt we’ll learn more soon as the funding disbursed by NASA over the next year or so helps flesh them out.

Apple Sans Ive

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 11:40 AM PDT

Well, this has been interesting. After almost 30 years with Apple, Jony Ive is leaving to found his own firm, LoveFrom, with his friend and frequent collaborator Marc Newson — also leaving Apple. The response to this news has been predictably histrionic from Apple watchers and press.

The narratives, to summarize, are essentially that:

  • Jony had checked out, become incompetent or just plain lazy
  • Apple is doomed because he is leaving

If those narratives look contradictory, then you have eyes.

If you take the sum of the breathless (dare I say thirsty) stories tying together a bunch of anecdotes about Jony's last couple of years, they are trying to paint a picture of a legendary design figure that has abandoned the team and company he helped build, leading to a stagnation of forward progress — while at the same time trying to argue that the company is doomed without him.

OK.

Ironically (or perhaps inevitably), even the phrasing of the tweets that accompanied these stories were couched in inflammatory positioning. Tim Cook's email (actually quite plainly stated) was touted as “scathing;” the Journal posited the question: “Why hasn't Apple had a hit product in years? A look at the internal drama around the departure of its design chief helps explain.” A conclusion that its story only hints at.

Most watchers of the company that I know who were asking and listening to Apple people over the past couple of years are aware that Jony has been on borrowed time with the company. Shocking, this was not — a surprise it was always guaranteed to be given how much control Jony keeps over how and when he does press.

Back in 2015, it was clear that Jony wanted to do less paper pushing and more pencil pushing. And the past decade of Apple has been nothing if not an explosion of management challenges. Enormous growth in product volumes, splintering product lines that made an attempt to leave less room under the pricing and feature umbrella and, yeah, a hell of a lot more people.

"Many of Apple's critics are purely nostalgic," Ben Bajarin of Creative Strategies puts it. "Wanting Apple to go back to the days when some of the designs were more bold, iconic, possibly polarizing, but in that time Apple was selling tens of millions of products not hundreds of millions of products. This is a crucially important point that many in the public sphere miss."

All of that growth means that the job of someone like Jony would naturally shift from scooting a pencil around a drafting board to something more like management — or, in Apple's case, teaching.

I'm not the Journal's (or any other publication's, thank god) public editor. So I will not be fisking the stories that have come out about Jony and his work habits. I've never been that good at it and I don't really have the stomach for it these days. I do have thoughts, though, about the way that these anecdotes are tied together in a narrative.

Given that I have covered the company closely for years, I know a lot of the people who were involved in some of these situations. Jony did, in fact, move to holding design meetings at his house in SF. They absolutely held design meetings at The Battery to collate device opinion. He has a design studio in other homes like Hawaii and London. He has absolutely spent more time in the city than down at Apple headquarters over the past few years. The design teams, in and out of the industrial design people, absolutely saw less of him than before.

There are also bits and pieces in the various stories over the past few days that are not, as I understand them, accurate, or represented in an accurate context. But the more important point is that no one I know felt that Jony had checked out or abandoned the team.

As he stated himself, Jony was just plain tired. What prolific designer do you know that is excited about doing more management and less design?

Also, I fully reject the narrative that Apple has somehow floundered because Jony has been absentee. During the period, the company has shipped some enormously successful products — including the major category hit Apple Watch. As one note, I found the criticism that Jony wanted a gold watch so that made the Apple Watch a boondoggle to be enormously hilarious.

The gold watch had two distinct purposes:

  • Jony wanted to make it
  • It set expectation that this was a product worth wearing all day

I think it is 100% possible and fair to argue that the first point means Jony had too much power or that it was him exercising that power in a way that felt foreign to Apple's egalitarian ideals about computing. But the fact is that, regardless of how many they sold, it made a splash and did, in fact, push Apple into the world of fashion and wearable conversation in a way that it hadn't ever before.

That toe-hold gave them time to figure out what the Watch is actually for and it is a very real success for the company. During the same period, Apple shipped the iPhone X months ahead of schedule, and major updates to every line, including the iMac.

I can certainly understand one or more members of the design team resenting the lack of intimate one-on-one time that Jony used to spend with the team when Apple shipped fewer products in more time. And not all of Jony's influence over the past few years is pristine in hindsight. The MacBook keyboards still suck, I'll give you that one.

Basically, all design is worth critiquing, and Jony isn't above that. If something doesn't work consistently or feel human centric, then it doesn't matter if 1950's Dieter Rams himself designed it, it's crap.

But the argument that Jony derailed product at Apple looks like complete nonsense when you observe the facts. And every design team member I've spoken to over the last four years has said that Jony, while at times difficult, demanding and intense, has also been an enormous enabling force when it comes to spending the time, resources and energy it took them to get a product or feature to the level they wanted. Resources like on-the-ground materials consultation in China, collaborations with artists around the world, research into the effects of a design — the willingness to “do the most” in search of a solution. None of that went away.

That said, if Jony doesn't like managing, guess what Jony is not going to be enthusiastic about? As Shel Silverstein put it: "If you have to dry the dishes, and you drop one on the floor, maybe they won't make you dry dishes any more."

There is certainly calculus in everything an executive at any big company says publicly — but I think you can believe Jony when he says that he feels like he can be useful elsewhere.

"I certainly have an ambition and feel almost a moral obligation to be useful," he says in this FT piece. "I feel I’ve been fortunate enough to work with remarkable people over the last 30-plus years and have worked on some very interesting projects and solved some very difficult problems. I feel keenly aware of a responsibility to do something significant with that learning."

He wants out, and that's what he's doing. But he's not leaving the company in terrible shape, from either an overall perspective or from an internal perspective.

Let's move away from the anecdotal. What's more interesting to me than any of this Jony shit-talking is where Apple design goes from here.

Apple has put Evans Hankey and Alan Dye in charge of design, reporting to Jeff Williams. Wring your hands all you want about Apple becoming an operations company but, like, where have you been for the last 10 years?

Yes, Apple is a different company now, and it should be. While Jony has given us some amazing work (and some amazing “what the hell?” moments) over the years, it’s going to be fascinating to watch a new leadership tackle the next era at Apple.

I think it's also smart of Apple not to announce a single “Jony replacement” at this juncture. Any immediate comparison would likely not do them any favors and this gives the team time to find a new center and a new direction over the next couple of years. I think someone will emerge as the design lead here eventually, but I'm not sure who.

Evans, as I understand it, was hand-picked by Jony to lead the ID team as a manager, a job she's already been doing. She's a capable design manager with hundreds of patents to her name. More importantly, Apple has a historic and systemic policy that they don't just put people in to do a job, they put them there to learn from them and to teach them. The Apple way of doing things is institutionalized and taught to new hires.

This institutional tissue, I believe, will survive Jony leaving.

One of the things that struck me the most about a lot of the recent stories is that it painted members of the design team as feckless automatons that could not proceed without Jony approving every move. That's not true, and honestly not even possible. There's no way Apple could ship on the schedule they have done over the past few years if Jony being late to a meeting would handicap them.

There are a lot of very smart and very talented people at Apple, and they are not all named Jony.

I'm also very interested to see how Alan Dye gets on with Apple. He's got a calm, understated demeanor in person that can come across a bit flat, but he's clearly very engaged with the task. He's respected by Apple designers who feel that his work speaks for itself internally and that he has the chops. One of the arcs of Dye’s tenure has been to unify the look and feel of iOS across its platforms in terms of typography like San Francisco.

One of the biggest potholes that the software design team has ever hit, in my opinion, was iOS 7. It needed to be a break with the past for some legitimate reasons, like the expansion of iOS onto new platforms like the car, the watch and beyond. But Jony brought print, not interaction, designers from other parts of Apple in to flesh out the final design, and that ended up presenting as a radical new but also radically less usable iOS.

iOS 7, to me, has always reminded me of an apocryphal saying I heard but can't remember where. It's about the notoriously difficult to drive Porsche 911: Porsche made a beautiful mistake, and it's spent 50 years fixing it.

The 911 was a car that was designed to be imbalanced from the beginning by placing the engine in the rear, to emphasize power transfer to the ground via weight and traction. Also, no joke, so you could still fit groceries in it.

Unfortunately, it also enabled massive oversteer, with the car swinging wide on corners incredibly suddenly if pushed too hard. Porsche has refined that design with every iteration, improving every other aspect of the vehicle, like traction, larger wheelbase, steering, braking and gearing. Just to get it to a place where the original vision remained intact, but, you know, less fire and dying.

Apple has done much the same since iOS 7, taking a concept that it felt was necessary and continuing to pull it back into a place that feels more usable.

Screen Shot 2019 07 02 at 12.58.36 PM

One of the things that stood out to me at the time was that iOS 7 led with a “panes of glass” metaphor. They weren't all that explicit about it then, but it seemed clear to me that they saw this as a way to support all kinds of interfaces, from palm first to heads up. An evolution of the information appliance.

Dye and the design team (and Jony, tbf) have spent the last couple of years making big strides fixing the mechanical issues, but it was very exciting to me to see the panes of glass metaphor heavily emphasized at WWDC this year. They're just panes with depth, texture and hopefully more accessible context this time around.

Even though Jony is a “unicorn” designer, Apple has always thrived on small teams with decision makers, and they're not all one person. The structure of Apple, which does not rely on product managers, still leaves an enormous amount of power in the hands of the people actually doing the work. I'm not as concerned as a lot of people are that, with Jony leaving, there will suddenly be a slavish hewing to the needs of “ops over all.” It's not in the DNA.

That doesn't mean, however, that there aren't still question marks. Jony was an enormous force in this company. It is completely natural to be curious, excited and, hell yeah, even worried about what his departure will do to the design-focused Apple people love to love.

An Adidas Futurecraft shoe with a midsole printed by Carbon

As for me, I hope there can be a balance struck between the established patterns of Apple design and new schools of thought. No company should remain rooted in the past completely. There are wildly interesting things happening in design and manufacturing at the moment. Trends like programmatic or "AI" design that allow designers to define an algorithm and a set of constraints, and then generate “impossible” shapes out of edgy materials to obtain a result unable to be sketched or sculpted by traditional processes.

The shoe pictured above is a collaboration between an artist and an algorithm. Daniel Arsham, Adidas and a startup called Carbon made this with the help of a design program that understands the goals and materials it’s working with, but charts its own path to getting there. This is the new school of design.

The compression of the design and manufacturing stacks into one segment is going to be the defining characteristic of this age of product development in my opinion. Apple needs to jump on that wave and ride it.

There's a Steve quote, prominently displayed on the wall of the Infinite Loop 4 building in its old Cupertino headquarters.

"I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what's next."

I'd love to see Apple's design teams do just that, embrace these new schools of thought and find ways to integrate them into the way that it has always worked. There hasn't been a more fascinating time to follow this company in years. Whatever happens, it won't be boring.

Waymo is now allowed to transport passengers in its self-driving vehicles on California roads

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:58 AM PDT

Waymo, Google’s former self-driving venture that is now a business under Alphabet, has been given permission by California regulators to transport passengers in its robotaxis, TechCrunch has learned. The approval is a milestone for the company as it begins to ramp up toward a commercial service.

The California Public Utilities Commission granted Waymo a permit on Tuesday to participate in the state’s Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service pilot. Waymo confirmed the approval. A statement from a Waymo spokesperson provides some hints as to how and where the company intends to use this permit.

“The CPUC allows us to participate in their pilot program, giving Waymo employees the ability to hail our vehicles and bring guests on rides within our South Bay territory,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “This is the next step in our path to eventually expand and offer more Californians opportunities to access our self-driving technology, just as we have gradually done with Waymo One in Metro Phoenix.”

The approval from CPUC is different than the permits issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to test self-driving vehicles in the state. More than 60 companies have a permit to test in the state.

Instead, this gives Waymo permission to use its self-driving vehicles — which are the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans and eventually the Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicle — to transport people. The company still faces certain restrictions. It can’t charge for rides and the vehicles must have safety drivers behind the wheel. Waymo will also have to provide reports to CPUC with information on total passenger miles traveled and safety protocols.

The CPUC also gave Waymo an exemption that will allow the autonomous vehicle technology startup to use a third-party company to contract out safety operators. Waymo argued in a letter requesting the exemption that while the company’s “team of test drivers will include some full-time Waymo employees, operating and scaling a meaningful pilot requires a large group of drivers who are more efficiently engaged through Waymo’s experienced and specialized third-party staffing providers.”

Waymo confirmed that all test drivers go through its proprietary driver training program.

Waymo isn’t the first to receive the permit. Back in December, Zoox scored the inaugural permit from the CPUC. Pony.ai and AutoX, which started as an autonomous delivery company, also received permits.

Waymo has been testing self-driving vehicles in California for years. But its first ride-hailing service began in Arizona, a state with fewer regulatory hoops for companies to jump through.

Waymo opened a technical center Chandler, Ariz. and started testing there in 2016. Since then the company has ramped up its testing and launched an early rider program in April 2017 as a step toward commercial deployment.

In December, the company launched Waymo One, a commercial self-driving car service and accompanying app. The service, which does charge passengers, still has Waymo-trained test drivers behind the wheel.

Trump taps conservative pundits for ‘social media summit’

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:54 AM PDT

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and PragerU are among the conservative voices that have been tapped to attend next week's White House "social media summit." That news is courtesy of The Washington Post, which highlights some of the plans for the July 11 event, set to focus on "opportunities and challenges of today’s online environment."

The move won't come as a surprise to anyone who has followed the news cycle since Trump took office. While social media sites have been the subject of plenty of criticism from both the left and the right, conservatives in particular have had companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter in their sights over claimed "liberal biases."

Just yesterday, Trump told Fox News' Tucker Carlson that the sites have been "fighting" him. "I know for a fact a lot of people try and follow me and it's very hard," the president said. "I have so many people coming up that they say, 'Sir, it's so hard. They make it hard to follow.' What they're doing is wrong and possibly illegal. And a lot of things are being looked at right now."

While Trump offered no specific evidence around his claims, the move follows a pattern of accusing different platforms of "shadow banning" Trump and other conservative voices. Last week, Twitter announced that it would be issuing warnings for "abusive behavior" from prominent news figures. While not a block or a ban, the move is an attempt to walk the line between curbing abuse and maintaining "newsworthy" content. Many saw the move as specifically targeting Trump.

Instagram’s new chat sticker lets friends ask to get in on the conversation directly in Stories

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:39 AM PDT

Instagram has a new sticker type rolling out today that lets friends and followers instantly tap to start conversations from within Stories. The new sticker option, labelled “Chat,” will let anyone looking at a story request to join an Instagram group DM conversation tied to the post, with the original poster still getting the opportunity to actually approve the requests coming in from their friends and followers.

Instagram’s Direct Messages provide built-in one-to-one and one-to-many private messaging for users on the platform, and are one key way that the social network owned by Facebook has used to fend off, anticipate and adapt features from would-be competitor Snapchat. The company confirmed in May that it was discontinuing development of Direct, its own standalone app version of the Instagram DM feature, but its clearly still interested on iterating the core product to make it more engaging for users and better linked to Instagram’s other core sharing capabilities.

Crowdfunded solar sail spacecraft moves closer to flying on light alone

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:14 AM PDT

The Planetary Society’s crowdfunded LightSail 2 spacecraft reported back some good news today: It’s officially orbiting on its own after being delivered to space via rocket rideshare aboard SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy last week.

LightSail 2 “phoned home” today in the wee hours of the morning, a good sign that it’s well set up to achieve its main mission of actually unfurling its solar sail, which will propel the spacecraft forward in a planned course that will raise its orbit higher than its current point. It’ll do this using only the force generated by photons produced by sunlight actually hitting the 105-foot-square reflective Mylar sheet. Note that this is very different from solar power, which converts energy from sunlight into electricity.

Should it succeed in deploying its sail, it’ll be the first demonstration of a LightSail craft doing so (the first one was meant to merely test other systems and didn’t actually sail). But don’t expect space-based speed trials — this type of craft actually generates very little thrust, but its design could theoretically prove an efficient, effective and affordable way to operate for specific types of missions where acceleration isn’t as important as eventual top speed. Even a very light push, once multiplied by many other light pushes, can produce a lot of speed in the vacuum of space.

Canadian startup Sweet Reason has sparkling spin on CBD beverages

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:03 AM PDT

Sweet Reason chief executive Hilary McCain says she launched her sparkling CBD-infused water brand because of her own obsession with cannabis beverages.

That obsession, coupled with the lax regulatory environment in Canada where marijuana is already legalized, led the former Boston Consulting Group consultant and longtime food industry insider to launch the sparkling water company.

“The recreational legalization of cannabis was on the horizon. A lot of my mentors and advisers from the food industry were switching over to cannabis… and I believe beverage is the most social and healthiest way to consume cannabis.”

Sweet Reason describes its product as a “premium sparkling water infused with 7mg of… unique form of CO2-extracted CBD.” Its CBD is water-soluble and the company’s drinks contain no sugar, sweeteners, sodium, carbs or artificial ingredients. The company sources its cannabinoid extract from a hemp grower in Colorado and uses a co-packing facility for bottling and distribution.

McCain contends that the beverage is meant to be enjoyed throughout the day as a mild stimulant compared to something like a Red Bull or a soda. But, reader, I’m one bottle into the day already and let me tell you, I’m definitely not going to be able to drink a second one if I want to get anything done.

In January 2018, McCain started the company with a personal investment of a couple-hundred thousand dollars. The money went into market research, brand development and the creation of her CBD-infused concoctions. And when getting a new consumer business off the ground, especially one operating in the regulatory gray area of cannabis and marijuana, the first thing to do is understand the regulatory environment, says McCain.

By the end of the year, she was ready to go to market, but regulatory changes in Canada meant that her home country wouldn’t be the first port of call for the beverage brand. Instead, McCain hit the U.S. market, landing first in New York and selling around the country through online sales channels.

Screen Shot 2019 07 02 at 9.26.05 AM

After the sales started rolling in, the company began attracting the attention of some pretty heavy hitters in the consumer venture capital market.

Sweet Reason now has $2.5 million in new financing thanks to a seed financing round led by Lerer Hippeau — the investment firm behind startups like Glossier, Warby Parker, Allbirds, Casper and Soylent. Other investors included RiverPark Ventures and the New York-based consumer internet investor Max Ventures. Subversive Capital, a cannabis investor financed by the Peter Thiel-backed Privateer Holdings, also committed capital to the round.

"With Sweet Reason, we’re betting on a team that's laser-focused on delivering superior quality and building a best-in-class brand," says Lerer Hippeau's Caitlin Strandberg. "Hilary's deep domain expertise in the food industry as well as her passion for health and wellness will accelerate Sweet Reason into a category leader."

While cannabis, cannabis extracts and marijuana have become hot commodities in startup land, many companies are still wrestling with the ways in which they can help undo some of the damage that the criminalization of marijuana and cannabinoid sales previously experienced. Sweet Reason is no different.

“There is a responsibility for cannabis companies and hemp companies by affiliation to support those efforts and initiatives to help remedy the damage that’s been done,” says McCain.

However, her company has not determined what steps it will take to support amnesty for non-violent drug offenders incarcerated for marijuana-related crimes, or how it will address issues of promoting entrepreneurship in the communities ravaged by the “War on Drugs.”

Sweet Reason is planning to donate 1% of its sales to mental health initiatives — something that could wind up benefiting the company if those donations go toward investigating the role that CBD can play in the treatment of mental illnesses.

The company’s sparkling cannabinoid-infused concoctions are available at Dean & Deluca, Westside Market and other upscale purveyors of fancy foods and drinks. The drinks come in three flavors — grapefruit, cucumber mint and strawberry lavender, and retail for $5.99.

File-storage app 4shared caught serving invisible ads and making purchases without consent

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:00 AM PDT

With more than 100 million installs, file-sharing service 4shared is one of the most popular apps in the Android app store.

But security researchers say the app is secretly displaying invisible ads and subscribes users to paid services, racking up charges without the user’s knowledge — or their permission — collectively costing millions of dollars.

“It all happens in the background… nothing appears on the screen,” said Guy Krief, chief executive of London-based Upstream, which shared its research exclusively with TechCrunch.

The researchers say the app contains suspicious third-party code that allowed the app to automate clicks and make fraudulent purchases. They said the component, built by Hong Kong-based Elephant Data, downloads code which is “directly responsible” for generating the automated clicks without the user’s knowledge. The code also sets a cookie to determine if a device has previously been used to make a purchase, likely as a way to hide the activity.

Upstream also said the code deliberately obfuscates the web addresses it accesses and uses redirection chains to hide the suspicious activity.

Over the past few weeks Upstream said it’s blocked more than 114 million suspicious transactions originating from two million unique devices, according to data from its proprietary security platform, which the company said would cost consumers if they are not blocked. Upstream only has visibility in certain parts of the world — Brazil, Indonesia and Malaysia to name a few — suggesting the number of observed suspicious transactions was likely a fraction of the total number.

Then in mid-April, 4shared’s app suddenly disappeared from Google Play and was replaced with a near-identical app with the suspicious components removed.

At the time of writing, 4shared’s new app has more than 10 million users.

Irin Len, a spokesperson for 4shared, told TechCrunch that the company was “unaware” of the fraudulent ad activity in its app until we reached out, but confirmed the company no longer works with Elephant Data.

Len said the old app was removed by Google “without reason,” but its suspicions quickly fell on the third-party components, which the company removed and resubmitted the app for approval. But because their old app was pulled from Android’s app store, 4shared said it wasn’t allowed to push an update to existing users to remove the suspicious components from their devices.

Google did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.

We sent Elephant Data several questions and follow-up emails prior to publication but we did not hear back.

4shared, owned by New IT Solutions based in the British Virgin Islands, makes a brief reference to Elephant Data in its privacy policy but doesn’t explicitly say what the service does. 4shared said since it’s unable to control or disable Elephant Data’s components in its old app, “we’re bound to keep the detailed overview of which data may be processed and how it may be shared” in its privacy policy.

Little else is known about Elephant Data, except that it bills itself as a “market intelligence” solution designed to “maximize ad revenue.”

The ad firm has drawn criticism in several threads on Reddit, one of which accused the company of operating a “scam” and another called the offering “dodgy.” One developer said he removed the components from his app after it began to suffer from battery-life issues, but Elephant Data was “still collecting data” from users who hadn’t updated their apps.

The developer said Google also banned his app, forcing him to resubmit an entirely new version of his app to the store.

It’s the latest app in recent months to be accused of using invisible ads to generate fraudulent revenue. In May, BuzzFeed News reported similar suspicious behavior and fraudulent purchases in Chinese video app VidMate.

How safe are robotaxis? BMW, Intel, Aptiv (and 8 others) just laid out a safety blueprint

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 09:39 AM PDT

Self-driving vehicles are often trumpeted as the answer to the millions of injuries and deaths that occur each year on the world’s roadways.

Developers and proponents of the technology argue that an automated system that can see, hear, react and make better decisions than humans will reduce the number of crashes that occur every year. And that’s a considerable promise. Some 1.35 million people died in vehicle crashes in 2016, according to the most recent statistics from the World Health Organization.

Still, there is no way for companies to guarantee that every self-driving vehicle put on the world’s roads can guarantee the same robust level of safety and security.

Eleven companies have formed a consortium to change that.

Tier 1 suppliers Aptiv and Continental, automakers Audi, BMW, Daimler, Fiat Chrysler and Volkswagen, as well as chipmakers Intel and Infineon, mapping consortium HERE and China’s internet search giant Baidu released Tuesday a 157-page white paper that outlines how to build, test and operate a safe automated vehicle. (The white paper is embedded below)

The idea behind the “Safety First for Automated Driving,” group (SaFAD for short) is to create a blueprint of sorts that lays out 12 principles for designing — and later testing and validating — safe automated vehicles, Karl Iagnemma, president of Aptiv Mobility told TechCrunch.

This isn’t meant to be a static effort. One technological breakthrough could render portions of the white paper moot. The intent was to create a “living” document that grows and adapts along with technology and the industry, Iagnemma said.

Nor does the document pick technological winners or losers. Those who sift through the white paper won’t find endorsements for certain sensors, for example. Instead, the group is pushing for common ground on safety.

The paper lays down certain “safety by design” rules that engineers should be thinking about and following from the beginning. This first section of the document lays out 12 guiding design principles, such as proper cybersecurity, protections if the system degrades or fails, operational design domain and data recording. A number of the principles deal with how a vehicle operator and the automated driving system interact with each other, including ensuring that if a handover does need to occur (this would be in vehicles that could switch between manual and automated controls) that it is properly and explicitly communicated to the human.

The principles also delve into the behavior of the automated vehicle to ensure that it’s predictable for the user and easy-to-understand for surrounding road users like bicyclists, pedestrians and other drivers.

The architects of this framework even weigh in on the safety of the interior of these automated vehicles. It’s a seemingly small, yet important guideline. So many of the futuristic concepts shown at tech and auto shows depict lounge-like interiors where people can face each other. The guidelines simply state that occupants should be protected even when there are new uses for the interior.

The second half of the document covers the validation and verification of these systems. In other words, how do you make sure that the automated vehicle you designed and built actually works? The consortium believes proper validation and verification should include testing on tracks, open roads and in simulation.

One more interesting note found within the pages of the white paper is an appendix that deals with machine learning and more specifically deep neural networks, namely how to ensure they’re developed, deployed and properly validated.

All of this, of course, sounds like common sense. And yet, companies have been working on automated driving systems without a single standard to guide them.

Many companies might be following similar rules laid out in the framework released Tuesday, but it’s impossible to know exactly what they’re all up to, especially when considering this on a global scale. The goal of the framework’s architects is to get as many companies as possible to sign on until they hit a critical mass within the industry.

Sure, companies have signed onto consortiums like this before to push for safe automated vehicles or promote public education campaigns. It’s worth noting that this effort was apparently driven by engineers within these companies, and not a marketing team or board of directors.

It should be noted that there is an existing international standard called ISO 26262 that covers the functional safety of electrical and electronic systems in production vehicles. And another standard, ISO 21448 or "Safety of the Intended Functionality,” is in the works to handle advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles. The SaFAD consortium as well as another group (the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, or CLEPA), which is being led by Nvidia, are involved in the development of ISO 21448.

The hope is that out of these various efforts, a single, clear standard rises to the top that can be validated and verified. Without it, companies may have trouble building trust with a wary and fickle public.
