Birlas will let Voda Idea ship sink if govt doesn't send help

Posted:

MUMBAI: Aditya Birla Group will not infuse any fresh equity into Vodafone Idea Ltd, its telecom joint venture with Vodafone Group of UK, and let it opt for insolvency if the government does not provide substantial relief, including on the telco's adjusted gross revenue (AGR)-based dues, which could be over 39,000 crore, senior executives aware of the matter said. "The telecom business seems to be making money for everyone else except the players. It is unviable and unsustainable and will only drag down the group's profitability. We need to rethink our capital allocation better in a difficult business environment," said a senior group executive. A group official said the Indian conglomerate agreed with the comments of Vodafone Group CEO Nick Read on Tuesday. "If you don't get the remedies being suggested, the situation is critical," Read said after Vodafone Group's quarterly results on Tuesday. "If you're not a going concern, you're moving into a liquidation scenario - can't get any clearer than that." Read added that without any government relief, the future of the India JV was in doubt, and that the global telco won't be infusing any further equity into the venture. He sought to go back on some of his remarks on Wednesday. In an apology letter to the Indian government, Read said his comments were distorted and thanked the administration for setting up a committee of secretaries to devise a relief package for the stressed sector. 72048030 Little Interest from Banks This followed the government conveying its displeasure to the company at his remarks. The Vodafone Idea stock ended 7.5% lower at Rs 3.70 on the BSE on Wednesday. The Aditya Birla Group spokesperson didn't respond to ET's queries. The Vodafone Idea (VIL) board is meeting on November 14 to consider the company's fiscal second quarter results. The recent Supreme Court order that allowed the inclusion of non-core items in the definition of AGR has left Vodafone Idea staring at dues of over Rs28,000 crore in additional licence fee. In addition, the telco faces more than Rs11,000 crore in spectrum usage charge dues, plus interest and penalties on both heads. The troubled telco has a debt of over Rs 99,000 crore. It clocked losses of around Rs 5,000 crore and revenues of Rs 11,300 crore in the quarter ended June 2019.In the past month or so, Vodafone Idea has approached at least half a dozen investment banks to raise money from the overseas or domestic market, said bankers involved in the discussions. Some of those banks even tried reaching out to global investors. But there was not much appetite and so banks showed little interest in arranging any bond sale or syndicating any loan.Vodafone Idea did not reply to ET's email query till press time.Vodafone Plc on Tuesday said operating loss from its India business widened to 692 million in April-September from 133 million in the same period last year. It also cut the Indian unit's "carrying value" to zero, and said that Vodafone Idea doesn't contribute anything to the UK company's share price. There have been multiple meetings between Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and senior government officials for looking at a relief package that would include AGR dues. Read too met government officials during his last visit to India, and sought relief from high taxes and spectrum payments.ET reported in its November 13 edition that a panel of secretaries set up to suggest relief measures for the sector is likely to recommend a reduction in the licence fee paid by telecom companies to 5% from 8%, and a two-year moratorium on spectrum payments. However, incumbent telecom operators, including Vodafone Idea, are unlikely to be satisfied with only these measures, and need the committee - headed by cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba - to take a speedy call on providing relief on the AGR-related dues, besides finding a mechanism to raise tariffs. Vodafone Idea is also expected to file a limited review petition against the SC order, seeking a waiver on penalties and interest, besides the deletion of some non-core items from the AGR definition.Analysts also fear for Vodafone Idea's survival in the absence of any government help."Assuming no near-term respite in the form of supportive measures, the odds are against the possibility of Vodafone Idea's survival. It looks increasingly plausible to believe that in absence of any regulatory or policy-driven relief, the Indian telecom space may get reduced to a two private player market," said SBICap Securities in a recent report. It was referring to Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel as the two survivors, besides two state-run telcos.

What Paytm needs to do for Softbank's cheque

Posted:

MUMBAI: Japan's SoftBank has laid down new terms and conditions as part of the latest financing round in digital payments player One97 Communications, which runs Paytm, two people familiar with the deal said. SoftBank Vision Fund (SVF), an existing investor in Paytm, is learnt to have stipulated that the company should go public within five years from the time of completion of the transaction, a person in the know told ET. If the IPO does not take place, then SoftBank will have the right to sell its stake to a rival company, sources told ET. The $1 billion funding round is likely to see US asset manager T Rowe Price invest around $150-200 million in One97, with existing backers SoftBank and Alibaba Group affiliate Ant Financial infusing the rest, ET had reported in its October 15 edition. "SoftBank has finally signed the documents to invest in the new round of funding, but with conditions," said a person in the know.Looking at Strategy to Cut Losses "After a few rounds of negotiations, these terms have been agreed upon and the deal is nearing closure. A listing condition is common among financial investors. The Japanese company feels that Paytm has reached a stage where such a term can be included," said the person. SoftBank, which first invested in the company in 2017, holds a 19% stake, while the Alibaba Group, through Ant Financial and directly, owns 38% in One97. The Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led Paytm has been in talks since early this year to shore up funds amid mounting losses, growing competition in the digital payments sector from Google Pay and Walmart-owned PhonePe, and no clear path to monetise its customer base. But Sharma has stressed that his company is now looking at a strategy to cut losses and turn profitable amid a rising chorus against money-losing startups in India and the Silicon Valley.A SoftBank spokesperson declined to comment on the new terms of the deal while a mail sent to Paytm founder Sharma on Wednesday remained unanswered till press time. About ten days ago, Sharma in a text message to ET, had denied the condition to list in five years. These developments come in the backdrop of stricter terms that SoftBank is enforcing on a bunch of its portfolio firms worldwide in the aftermath of the WeWork debacle which led to a $4.6 billion loss for the Japanese internet and telecoms major. The Masayoshi Son-led group, which runs a $100-billion technology fund, has in the past two years led large financing rounds at steep valuations in loss-making startups, which has come under criticism after the botched-up IPO plans of WeWork. "In India too, SoftBank has gone slow as far as new investments are concerned because they are spending more time on due diligence," said another person in the know. The delay in closing funding rounds is also because SVF is in the process of raising a new fund, which has not been easy after WeWork's collapse and Uber's underperformance post IPO. Last week, Son, while announcing SoftBank's earnings, said that as of September 12 they had stopped making fresh investments from SVF 1 as it was more than 80% committed.One97 posted Rs 3,959.6 crore net loss in FY19 against Rs 1,490 crore a year earlier, according to details the company shared with investors, ET had reported in September. Its standalone revenue rose marginally to Rs 3,319 crore from Rs 3,229 crore in FY18. Deep Nishar, senior managing partner at Softbank Vision Fund, told ET last week that it has asked portfolio companies, including the ones in India, to aim at profits, and stop "chasing growth for the sake of growth". This is a significant shift for SoftBank, which has ploughed a slug of capital from its Vision Fund globally across startups with high cash burn.

India's next CJI on how to solve biz disputes

Posted:

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India-designate Justice SA Bobde has called for making pre-litigation mediation a must for commercial disputes. And, in a break from the past, he has also supported the idea of creating a national judicial service. In an interview to ET, Justice Bobde said: "All (commercial) matters could be made to first go through pre-litigation mediation. So if there is a commercial problem or dispute between two businesses, they could first undergo pre-litigation mediation. If it cannot be solved, then they can approach the courts."The CJI-designate felt Parliament should consider enacting alegislation to give mediation a status of decree. "Parliament will have to legislate. There is already a provision in the Lok Adalat Act where a settlement before a Lok Adalat is enforceable like decree of court. This agreement between the two parties arrived at the stage of pre-mediation litigation could have a force of a decree."Justice Bobde came out in support of the proposal to have an all-India judicial service. "I think a National Judicial Service is a good idea… there will be need for a specialised academy for training judges who would serve throughout the country."

We sold 40% devices in tier 2 during Diwali: Amazon exec

Posted:

Amazon has seen an 80% jump in sale of its devices during the Diwali festive season, with nearly 40% of that sold outside the metros. There has also been growing acceptance of its Alexa voice services in Hindi, David Limp, senior vice president of devices and services for Amazon, told ET in an interview. In the rest of the world, despite the holiday season being round the corner, products are busily being manufactured and Amazon is at its "peak manufacturing in our business right now," Limp said. Excerpts:How is Alexa's business model going to evolve?Using Kindle as an analogy, 'books' was one business model, but over the last decade, many have evolved, including building much more selection by giving authors the ability to self-publish books. This fuelled the flywheel of the business model of Kindle, because now there's a lot more selection, there's a subscription service which is Kindle unlimited. If customers love a product, you can generally figure out a way to turn that into a business model. Effectively, music in the home had gone away. People were doing music on their personal devices. The advent of Alexa and Echo has brought it back and… (then) came a rise in subscription services in and around music. The second would be smart home. Millions of customers are using Alexa and Echo every day for smart homes. As people adopt them, they tend to buy more capabilities in smart home devices. If you were to go and ask Philips about their bulbs, or Wipro about their light bar in India, they will all tell you that Alexa has (helped) increase by hundreds of percentage points over the last five years the adoption of a smart home plug or light bulb.Shopping is a perfect example where we're seeing signs of people adopting voice and that'll be another great business. You've launched Alexa in Hindi. Will you do the same for others too? When we launched in English, we recognised that this is a country of many different languages and many different dialects. Even in English, we had to get it to a quality level… to be used throughout India, we had to take many proper nouns, music artists and even then, some proper nouns would have been in Hindi or Tamil. For the next language, we'll just look to what customers tell us. With Kindle, we added many other Indic languages over time because of feedback.Do you see more unique use cases for India being developed?Every country has their unique use cases. A couple of early signs in India are payments, the other one is education. This is a country that makes it such a high priority to get educated. It's rooted into the culture that education is so important, so we now have 30,000 skills out there today, up from 10,000 when we launched Alexa, and many of those are education-based skills, and the demand for those is very high. During Diwali, we launched our first phone with Alexa integrated on it with Xiaomi. It's off to a great start and sold out in a minute or something. That's another example of something we did India first.Smartphones sales are still growing, but the Alexa devices, at $50, are still out of reach. Is smartphone a tactic that will play out more?I would point out that during the holiday season (in India), the cost of Echo was $30-$35. But, already, because we have an implementation that allows third parties to build, or use Alexa as an end point in the cloud, we're seeing companies do that. Motorola already had a pair of headphones at $10-$15, so we have devices at much lower price points. I do think from the sales performance that we just saw and the quick adoption that we're seeing with Alexa, (that) we're seeing the sub-$50 is garnering a lot of demand in India.Do you see more subscription-based services on Alexa?Music is the quintessential case for subscription. Here (in India), you do have very large ad supported products as well, but it's hard to not see the rise of adoption of subscription based music. That's been a big winner. In other parts of the world, audio-books that are subscription based have also become a big business. We've started building out the ability to build subscription based services, so skill providers can use that as a model.

India’s IT services vendors wary of making long-term commitment to single vendors: GlobalData

Posted:

Bengaluru: The evolving digital economy is leading to smaller and shorter deals for IT services vendors in India, which could reflect the fact that enterprises are increasingly becoming wary of making a long-term commitment to a single vendor, according to GlobalData, a data and analytics company.GlobalData said that the average outsourcing contract deal size amongst the Indian IT services vendors has come down to $17.2 million in the first half of this year from $22.9 million during the same period last year.Similarly, the average contract duration for Indian vendors has come down from 40.2 months to 35.8 months during the same period, it added."The trend is still in its infancy, which gives the Indian IT players sufficient time to adapt to the changing business environment and transform themselves," said Nishant Singh, Head of Data for Technology and Telecoms at GlobalData.Despite fears of an impending slowdown, the impact of Brexit and the lingering trade war tensions, the Indian IT outsourcing industry has been quite resilient for a while now, GlobalData said."Indian IT services vendors such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Tech-Mahindra have all shown steady revenue growth, with most other Indian vendors too having reported solid revenues in their recent quarters," it said. "However, despite the consistent revenue growth figures, there has been a lingering anxiety around profitability in the Indian IT outsourcing industry."Singh said these apprehensions reflect in the Indian IT vendors' latest financial reports, which show the profit margins of most of the IT vendors including TCS, Infosys and Wipro have shrunk.Indian IT vendors are improving their capabilities through investment in digital technologies, partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, GlobalData said, but the fact however remains that the traditional business model of large offshore contracts is under threat now, more than ever and they need to move fast to offset the changing IT services landscape and counter this impending paradigm shift.

Foreign funds likely to raise India weightage: Sunil Khaitan

Posted:

Bulge bracket funds from the US and Europe are expected to increase their weightage on India and more foreign funds are likely to hit the Indian equity markets, Bank of America – Merrill Lynch said. Foreign institutional investors have already started to write big cheques for Indian equity deals said Sunil Khaitan, India head, Global Capital Markets, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, in an interview with ET. The interest for companies that straddle consumer growth and financing that growth is tremendous. The sector offers an interesting combination of payments, technology and consumer finance. Excerpts: The fundraising market has been pretty good this year, except for IPOs. What are the reasons? The IPO market is much better, if compared to 2018. But this year, the big ticket ones were probably missing. We believe the broader equity market is still very positive. The question is — what are the funds being raised for? Is it secondary monetisation or for balance sheet repair or growth equity? Some of these IPOs do fall in the growth equity discussion, but most have been equity sell-downs by sponsors. Given the weaker macro environment, monetisation has been the theme in the IPOs.What kind of interest are you seeing from FPIs and DIIs?The interest for companies that straddle consumer growth and financing of that growth is tremendous. The sector offers an interesting combination of payments, technology and consumer finance. One can hardly own anything in the listed payments sector in India because most companies are still in a nascent stage. There are a few unicorns and then a few startups. That is why any listings from the sector will attract a ton of interest from the market. So you think there is no dearth of money coming into India? The year 2019 started with people thinking that it could be a sluggish year, primarily due to the scheduled Lok Sabha elections. Still, so many good deals happened between February and May. There was a lot of speculation in the market around who would form the next government and if it would be a stable one. Going forward, we continue to see a strong pipeline. Good companies will continue to see investor interest — both from foreign and domestic institutional investors. With the kind of liquidity environment, what kind of action is happening on the NBFC front — a few QIPs?The NBFC sector definitely needs to come to the market in the near future to raise funds. But these companies first need to get their balance sheets in shape and then come to the market for growth capital. This could take some time. However, the market will find it a lot more digestible. What's your take on government issues — disinvestments? Will any large institution express interest for this?Institutional investors would always show interest in government disinvestment but that depends on the name one is talking about. Some of the bellwether names in Indian indices are PSUs and there would definitely be a lot of interest if the transaction is structured well. What we are seeing now is that some of the largest US funds are ready to write big ticket cheques and such players would be happy to buy well-run PSUs. Over the last few months, we are getting a sense that such big funds are willing to enter India again and deploy capital in size. What could have triggered their sudden interest in India? In our discussions, we have realised that foreigners like a government which takes tough decisions, which might be unpopular in the near term, but have a long term positive. That is why, FPIs like this government. A few fund managers even told us that they see that the rule of law was getting better, the economy getting more formalised and a difficult but necessary reform thing like GST has eventually happened. And now that the short term pain of the reforms is getting priced in, such big funds would increase their India weightage and it means more funds coming into the country. All this change in perceptions has happened in the last six months, you reckon? It has been a process and markets like continuity and stability. A stable mandate for the next five years paves the way for investors to deploy cash. The last 6-8 months was also the time when we brought some quality deals to the market. For a fund, which actually puts say $100 million in India, it doesn't have much to own in real estate. And then suddenly, when Embassy REIT hits the market, that fund would just buy as much as it can.Do you think the share of India weightage will go up by 2020 for all these global funds? One round of increasing in weightage has already happened and not all of that capital has come in yet because once you have taken the weight higher, you can't really deploy all of that capital immediately. The reason being the names that FIIs are interested in might be trading at demanding valuations already. Therefore, the allocation doesn't really happen at one go and that's why when there's a deal, suddenly people think it's a good time to buy because they can get a certain volume at one go.The budget promised to bring down the promoter holding to 65%. Will that help in creating the depth for Indian stocks?Globally, the limits of free float are 25% in key countries but no developed market mandates 35% free float requirement. If the 35% free float threshold is made mandatory, the market needs at least $40-45 billion of new capital, whether from mutual funds or FIIs. The way our deals are typically structured, 60-70% of this corpus needs to be FII money. It means we need FIIs to invest another $30-35 billion dollars into India. Ideally, there should not be a large discrepancy between free-float levels for government-owned firms and the private sector.

By Patturaja MurugaboopathyIndia's passive index-tracking equity funds are set to beat their active stock-picking counterparts in returns for a second successive year as fund managers grapple with volatility and the challenges of outperforming benchmark indexes.According to Refinitiv Lipper data, India's passive funds have delivered an average return of 9.6% so far this year, much higher than active funds' 5.7%. In 2018, passive funds posted 2.3% gains, while active funds had negative returns.Active funds have historically outperformed passive funds in India when share price moves were more broad-based and market inefficiencies helped stock pickers as they hunted for shares whose prices were not truly reflective of their worth. But India's stock market rally has been much narrower in the past two years, with investors preferring some well-established heavyweights over smaller ones owing to broader uncertainties around a slowing domestic economy and the U.S.-China trade war.For instance, the Nifty index has risen 9.67% so far this year, but the Nifty Midcap index has shed 6.2% and the small-cap index has slumped 11.4%.Pratik Oswal, head of Passive Funds at Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company, said 85% of the Indian stock market had become efficient."Finding mispricings has become harder than it was 5-10 years ago," he said."A sharp correction in mid and small caps, coupled with mega caps becoming larger, has led to underperformance of most active fund managers."Also, the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (SEBI) rules on holdings of large-cap and mid-cap firms have affected the performance of active funds, analysts said.At the end of 2017, SEBI said a large-cap equity fund must invest at least 80% of its portfolio in large-cap stocks and mid-cap funds must invest at least 65% in mid caps.Prior to that, active fund managers had the flexibility to allocate larger amounts to other categories to boost their funds' performance.Nonetheless, active funds remain more popular with Indian investors who still haven't taken to index investing, unlike in developed markets. The passive funds' assets under management (AUM) is lower than that of active funds, according to Refinitiv Lipper data. Active funds' AUM stood at $94.4 billion at the end of third quarter, while passive funds' AUM were just $3.3 billion. In the United States, passive funds' AUM stands at more than half of the active funds' AUM, the data showed."We don't have a lot of long-term money flowing into index, the way it does in America or other developed markets," said Dhirendra Kumar, founder and chief executive officer of Value Research."Indian investors have become curious and they are beginning to invest (in passive funds). But I don't think it is very big time."

Midsize IT sees big digital deals as focus shifts to core

Posted:

Digital deal sizes are increasing for midsize IT services firms, as projects move from customer-facing functions to core business processes."To do a digital transformation, it is not sufficient to transform only the front-end, you need to reach back and transform the core," said R Srikrishna, CEO, Hexaware Technologies, adding companies no longer had a choice.Earlier this year, Hexaware acquired digital marketing firm Mobiquity to strengthen its digital offerings in the Cloud and customer experience management space. For Hexaware, the number of deals valued at $1-$5 million increased to 89 in the previous quarter, from 70 a year ago. The total number of deals valued at over $1 million also grew to 124 in the past year, from 95 earlier.Zensar, which derives half of its revenues from the digital business, also reported an increase in deal value."Enterprise deal sizes are going up as clients bring multiple disparate systems onto a digital platform," said CEO Sandeep Kishore. "It is no longer about just sales; finance, HR etc are more integrated at the enterprise level," he said. To stay ahead of the curve, Zensar has transitioned from being a 'Living Digital' to 'Living AI' organisation, driven by the belief that artificial intelligence will power the next round of growth for tech firms. The scale of digital business is starting to change, said Amit Chandra, an analyst with HDFC Securities. 72048250 "There are multiple layers now and most contracts that started out small two years ago have steadily scaled up. The initial makeover has been done and it is now about end-to-end transformations," he said.NIIT Technologies, which reported a 56% year-on-year increase in digital revenues, said digital now contributes 38% to its total revenue mix."We are looking to mesh together data, cloud, cognitive and automation as composite technologies to come up with a solution," Sudhir Singh, CEO, NIIT Technologies told ET earlier.L&T Infotech said "fast-growing Digital services across all verticals make us optimistic about the future," along with a healthy pipeline and momentum in large deals. "We won three large deals in this quarter, all of them from new clients, aggregating to netnew TCV (total contract value) of about $100 million," CEO Sanjay Jalona said while announcing the company's second quarter results last month.Midsize IT firms have used their nimbleness to transform, but that comes with a higher transition cost in terms of large deals."Deal sizes are going up, but this is putting margin pressures on the companies as they have to ramp up much faster," Chandra of HDFC Securities said."There's an increase in wage and subcontracting costs and these companies have to incur a higher large-deal transition cost compared to larger firms."

SpaceX completes key Crew Dragon launch system static fire test

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 02:50 PM PST

SpaceX has confirmed that it ran a static fire test of its Crew Dragon astronaut capsule launch escape system. That’s a key step that it needed to run, and one that is under especially high scrutiny because a static fire of its thrusters back in April resulted in an explosion that destroyed that spacecraft. After an investigation, SpaceX and NASA were confident that they identified and corrected the cause of that faulty test, which seems to have worked in their favor with today’s engine fire.

Today’s stick fire appears to have gone much more smoothly, with SpaceX noting that it ran for the full planned duration, and that now its own engineers along with NASA teams will be reviewing the results of this test and the data it provided. So long as what these teams find from these test results is within their expected range and criteria for success, that will mean they can move on to an in-flight demonstration of the crew space system — the next and necessary step leading up to the eventual crewed flight of Crew Dragon with NASA astronauts on board.

The in-flight abort test that will be the next key step for Crew Dragon will demonstrate how the SuperDraco crew escape system would behave in the unlikely event of an actual emergency during a crewed mission, albeit with a Crew Dragon spacecraft that doesn’t actually have anyone on board. NASA requires that its commercial crew partners demonstrate this system to ensure the safety of those on board by showing that they can quickly move the crew capsule to a safe distance away from the spacecraft in case of emergency. Elon Musk has said they’d hope to fly an in-flight abort as early as mid-December, provided this static test shows that everything is behaving as predicted.

If everything goes as planned with that crucial demonstration, NASA and SpaceX are optimistic that a first mission with crew on board could fly as early as the first part of next year. Commercial crew co-contractor Boeing is tracking to a similar timeline with its own Starliner crew capsule program.

AWS, Salesforce join forces with Linux Foundation on Cloud Information Model

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 02:29 PM PST

Last year, Adobe, SAP and Microsoft came together and formed the Open Data Initiative. Not to be outdone, this week, AWS, Salesforce and Genesys, in partnership with The Linux Foundation, announced the Cloud Information Model.

The two competing data models have a lot in common. They are both about bringing together data and applying a common open model to it. The idea is to allow for data interoperability across products in the partnership without a lot of heavy lifting, a common problem for users of these big companies’ software.

Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation, says this project provides a neutral home for the Cloud Information model, where a community can work on the problem. “This allows for anyone across the community to collaborate and provide contributions under a central governance model. It paves the way for full community-wide engagement in data interoperability efforts and standards development, while rapidly increasing adoption rate of the community,” Zemlin explained in a statement.

Each of the companies in the initial partnership is using the model in different ways. AWS will use it in conjunction with its AWS Lake Formation tool to help customers move, catalog, store and clean data from a variety of data sources, while Genesys customers can use its cloud and AI products to communicate across a variety of channels.

Patrick Stokes from Salesforce says his company is using the Cloud Information Model as the underlying data model for his company’s Customer 360 platform of products. “We’re super excited to announce that we’ve joined together with a few partners — AWS, Genesys and The Linux Foundation — to actually open-source that data model,” Stokes told TechCrunch.

Of course, now we have two competing “open” data models, and it’s going to create some friction until the two competing projects find a way to come together. The fact is that many companies use tools from each of these companies, and if there continues to be these competing approaches, it’s going to defeat the purpose of creating these initiatives in the first place.

As Satya Nadella said in 2015, “It is incumbent upon us, especially those of us who are platform vendors to partner broadly to solve real pain points our customers have.” If that’s the case, having competing models is not really achieving that.

Freshworks raises $150M Series H on $3.5B valuation

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 01:30 PM PST

Freshworks, a company that makes a variety of business software tools, from CRM to help-desk software, announced a $150 million Series H investment today from Sequoia Capital, CapitalG (formerly Google Capital) and Accel on a hefty $3.5 billion valuation. The late-stage startup has raised almost $400 million, according to Crunchbase data.

The company has been building an enterprise SaaS platform to give customers a set of integrated business tools, but CEO and co-founder Girish Mathrubootham says they will be investing part of this money in R&D to keep building out the platform.

To that end, the company also announced today a new unified data platform called the “Customer-for-Life Cloud” that runs across all of its tools. “We are actually investing in really bringing all of this together to create the “Customer-for-Life Cloud,” which is how you take marketing, sales, support and customer success — all of the aspects of a customer across the entire life cycle journey and bring them to a common data model where a business that is using Freshworks can see the entire life cycle of the customer,” Mathrubootham explained.

While Mathrubootham was not ready to commit to an IPO, he said they are in the process of hiring a CFO and are looking ahead to one day becoming a public company. “We don't have a definite timeline. We want to go public at the right time. We are making sure that as a company that we are ready with the right processes and teams and predictability in the business,” he said.

In addition, he says he will continue to look for good acquisition targets, and having this money in the bank will help the company fill in gaps in the product set should the right opportunity arise. “We don’t generally acquire revenue, but we are looking for good technology teams both in terms of talent, as well as technology that would help give us a jumpstart in terms of go-to-market.” It hasn’t been afraid to target small companies in the past, having acquired 12 already.

Freshworks, which launched in 2010, has almost 2,500 employees, a number that’s sure to go up with this new investment. It has 250,00 customers worldwide, including almost 40,000 paying customers. These including Bridgestone Tires, Honda, Hugo Boss, Toshiba and Cisco.

New NASA app puts you in the pilot’s seat of Boeing’s Starliner or SpaceX’s Crew Dragon

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 12:58 PM PST

NASA has a new app (or web-based game, if you’re on desktop) that provides a simplified simulation of what it’s like to plan and run a commercial crew mission — meaning one of the planned varieties of mission that will actually take place aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon and Boeing Starliner once they begin flying crews next year.

The app takes you through each part of the process, from spacecraft choice, to mission type, to crew selection, and then to the actual launch and docking process. It’s mostly about providing some education about each part of the process, rather than offering up an exhaustively realistic flight simulator — but the docking process with the International Space Station can be handled either on full automatic or on manual mode — and manual mode is fairly challenging and fun.

[gallery ids="1911680,1911681,1911682,1911683,1911684"]

NASA has included plenty of great info on both the Crew Dragon and the Starliner, and the respective rockets they will launch atop. It also included great bios for 10 actual astronauts you can select from to staff your mission. The launch assembly stage was a bit buggy when I gave it a try on my iPhone, but still workable, and it also provides key info about each element of the launch spacecraft, from boosters to crew capsules and everything in between.

The ‘Rocket Science: Ride 2 Station’ app is a free download, out now on iOS, and also available on the web.

The Math of Sisyphus

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 12:27 PM PST

“There is but one truly serious question in philosophy, and that is suicide,” wrote Albert Camus in The Myth of Sisyphus. This is equally true for a human navigating an absurd existence and an artificial intelligence navigating a morally insoluble situation.

As AI-powered vehicles take the road, questions about their behavior are inevitable — and the escalation to matters of life or death equally so. This curiosity often takes the form of asking whom the car should steer for should it have no choice but to hit one of a variety of innocent bystanders. Men? Women? Old people? Young people? Criminals? People with bad credit?

There are a number of reasons this question is a silly one, yet at the same time a deeply important one. But as far as I’m concerned, there is only one real solution that makes sense: when presented with the possibility of taking a life, the car must always first attempt to take its own.

The trolley non-problem

First, let’s get a few things straight about the question we’re attempting to answer.

There is unequivocally an air of contrivance to the situations under discussion. That’s because they’re not plausible real-world situations but mutations of a venerable thought experiment often called the “Trolley Problem.” The most familiar version dates to the ’60s, but versions of it can be found going back to discussions of utilitarianism, and before that in classical philosophy.

The problem goes: A train car is out of control, and it’s going to hit a family of five who are trapped on the tracks. Fortunately, you happen to be standing next to a lever that will divert the car to another track… where there’s only one person. Do you pull the switch? Okay, but what if there are ten people on the first track? What if the person on the second one is your sister? What if they’re terminally ill? If you choose not to act, is that in itself an act, leaving you responsible for those deaths? The possibilities multiply when it’s a car on a street: for example, what if one of the people is crossing against the light — does that make it all their fault? But what if they’re blind?

And so on. It’s a revealing and flexible exercise that makes people (frequently undergrads taking Intro to Philosophy) examine the many questions involved in how we value the lives of others, how we view our own responsibility, and so on.

But it isn’t a good way to create an actionable rule for real-life use.

After all, you don’t see convoluted moral logic on signs at railroad switches instructing operators on an elaborate hierarchy of the values of various lives. This is because the actions and outcomes are a red herring; the point of the exercise is to illustrate the fluidity of our ethical system. There’s no trick to the setup, no secret “correct” answer to calculate. The goal is not even to find an answer, but generate discussion and insight. So while it’s an interesting question, it’s fundamentally a question for humans, and consequently not really one our cars can or should be expected to answer, even with strict rules from its human engineers.

A self-driving car can no more calculate its way out of an ethical conundrum than Sisyphus could have calculated a better path by which to push his boulder up the mountain.
And it must also be acknowledged that these situations are going to be vanishingly rare. Most of the canonical versions of this thought experiment — five people versus one, or a kid and an old person — are so astronomically unlikely to occur that even if we did find a best method that a car should always choose, it’ll only be relevant once every trillion miles driven or so. And who’s to say whether that solution will be the right one in another country, among people with different values, or in 10 or 20 years?

No matter how many senses and compute units a car has, it can no more calculate its way out of an ethical conundrum than Sisyphus could have calculated a better path by which to push his boulder up the mountain. The idea is, so to speak, absurd.

We can’t have our cars attempting to solve a moral question that we ourselves can’t. Yet somehow that doesn’t stop us from thinking about it, from wanting an answer. We want to somehow be prepared for the situation even though it may never arise. What’s to be done?

Implicit and explicit trust

The entire self-driving car ecosystem has to be built on trust. That trust will grow over time, but there are two aspects to be considered.

The first is implicit trust. This is the kind of trust we have in the cars we drive today: that despite being one-ton metal missiles propelled by a series of explosions and filled with high octane fuel, they won’t blow up, fail to stop when we hit the brakes, spin out when we turn the wheel, and so on. That we trust the vehicle to do that is the result of years and years of success on the part of car manufacturers. Considering their complexity, cars are among the most reliable machines ever made. That’s been proven in practice and most of the time, we don’t even think of the possibility of the brakes not catching when the pedal is depressed.

You trust your personal missile to work the way you trust a fridge to stay cold. Let’s take a moment to appreciate how amazing that is.

Self-driving cars, however, introduce new factors, unproven ones. Their proponents are correct when they say that autonomous vehicles will revolutionize the road, reduce traffic deaths, shorten commutes, and so on. Computers are going to be much better drivers than us in countless ways. They have superior reflexes, can see in all directions simultaneously (not to mention in the dark, and around or through obstacles), communicate and collaborate instantly with nearby vehicles, immediately sense and potentially fix technical problems… the list goes on.

But until these amazing abilities lose their luster and become just more pieces of the transportation tech infrastructure that we trust, they’ll be suspect. That part we can’t really accelerate except, paradoxically, by taking it slow and making sure no highly visible outlier events (like that fatal Uber crash) arrest the zeitgeist and set back that trust by years. Make haste slowly, as they say. Few people remember anti-lock brakes saving their lives, though it’s probably happened to several people reading this right now — it just quietly reinforced our implicit trust in the vehicle. And no one will remember when their car improved their commute by five minutes with a hundred tiny improvements. But they sure do remember that Toyotas killed dozens with bad software that locked the car’s accelerator.

The second part of that trust is explicit: something that has to be communicated, learned, something of which we are consciously aware.

For cars there aren’t many of these. The rules of the road differ widely and are flexible — some places more than others — and on ordinary highways and city streets we operate our vehicles almost instinctively. When we are in the role of pedestrian, we behave as a self-aware part of the ecosystem — we walk, we cross, we step in front of moving cars because we assume the driver will see us, avoid us, stop before they hit us. This is because we assume that behind the wheel of every car is an attentive human who will behave according to the rules we have all internalized.

Nevertheless, we have signals, even if we don’t realize we’re sending or receiving them; how else can you explain how you know that truck up there is going to change lanes fives seconds before it turns its blinker on? How else can you be so sure a car isn’t going to stop, and hold a friend back from stepping into the crosswalk? Just because we don’t quite understand it doesn’t mean we don’t exert it or assess it all the time. Making eye contact, standing in a place implying the need to cross, waving, making space for a merge, short honks and long honks… it’s a learned skill, and a culture or even city-specific one at that.

Cold blooded

With self-driving cars there is no humanity in which to place our trust. We trust other people because they’re like us; computers are not like us.

In time, autonomous vehicles of all kinds will become as much a part of the accepted ecosystem as automated lights and bridges, metered freeway entrances, parking monitoring systems, and so on. Until that time we will have to learn the rules by which autonomous vehicles operate, both through observation and straightforward instruction.

Some of these habits will be easily understood; for instance, maybe autonomous vehicles will never, ever try to make a U-turn by crossing a double yellow line. I try not to myself, but you know how it is. I’d rather do that than go an extra three blocks to do it legally. But an AV will perhaps scrupulously adhere to traffic laws like that. So there’s one possible rule.

Others might not be quite so hard and fast. Merging and lane changes can be messy, but perhaps it will be the established pattern that AVs will always brake and join the line further back rather than try to move up a spot. This requires a little more context and the behavior is more adaptive, but it’s still a relatively simple pattern that you can perceive and react to, or even exploit to get ahead a bit (please don’t).

It’s important to note that, like the trolley problem “solutions,” there’s no huge list of car behaviors that says, always drop back when merging, always give the right of way, never this, this if that, etc. Just as our decision to switch or not switch tracks proceeds from a higher-order process of morality in our minds, these autonomous behaviors will be the natural result of a large set of complicated evaluations and decision-making processes that weigh hundreds of factors like positions of nearby cars, speed, lane width, etc. But I think they’ll be reliable enough in some ways and in some behaviors that there will definitely be a self-driving “style” that doesn’t deviate too much.

Although few if any of these behaviors are likely to be dangerous in and of themselves, it will be helpful to understand them if you are going to be sharing the road with them. Imperfect knowledge is how we get accidents to begin with. Establishing an explicit trust relationship with self-driving vehicles is part of the process accepting them into our everyday lives.

But people naturally want to take things to their logical ends, even if those ends aren’t really logical. And as you consider the many ways AVs will drive and how they will navigate certain situations, the “but what if…” scenarios naturally get more and more dire and specific as variables approach limits, and ultimately you arrive at the AV equivalent of the trolley problem that we started with. What happens when the car has to make a choice between people?

It’s not that anyone even thinks it will happen to them. What they want to know, as a prerequisite to trust, is that the system is not unprepared, and that the prepared response is not one that puts them in danger. People don’t want to be the victim of the self-driving car’s logic, even theoretically — that would be an impassible barrier to trust.

Because whatever the scenario, whoever it “chooses” between, one of those parties is undeniably the victim. The car got on the road and, following its ill logic to the bitter end, homed in on and struck this person rather than that one.

If neither of the people in this AV-trolley problem can by any reasonable measure be determined to be the “correct” one to choose, especially from their perspective (which must after all be considered), what else is there to do? Well, we have to remember that there’s one other “person” involved here: the car itself.

Is it self-destruction if you don’t have a self?

My suggestion is simply that it be made a universal policy that should a self-driving car be put in a situation where it is at serious risk of striking a person, it must take whatever means it can to avoid it — up to and including destroying itself, with no consideration for its own “life.” Essentially, when presented with the possibility of murder, an autonomous vehicle must always prefer suicide.

When presented with the possibility of murder, an autonomous vehicle must always prefer suicide.
It doesn’t have to detonate itself or anything. It just needs to take itself out of the action, and a robust improvisational engine can be produced to that end just as well as for avoiding swerving trucks, changing lanes suddenly and any other behavior. There are telephone poles, parked cars, trees — take your pick; any of these things will do as long as they stop the car.

The objection, of course, is that there is likely to be a person inside the self-driving car. Yes — but this person has consented to the inherent risk involved, while the people on the street haven’t. While much of the moral calculus of the trolley problem is academic, this bit actually makes a difference.

Consenting to the risks of using a self-driving system means the occupant is acknowledging the possibility that should such a situation arise, however remote the possibility, they would be the person who may be the victim of it. They are the ones who will explicitly consent to trust their lives to the logic of the self-driving system. Furthermore, as a practical consideration, the occupant is so to speak on the soft side of the car.

As we’ve already established, it’s unlikely a car will ever have to do this. But what it does is provide a substantial and easily understood answer when someone asks the perfectly natural question of what an autonomous vehicle will do when it is careening toward a pedestrian. Simple: it will do its level best to destroy itself first.

There are extremely specific and dire situations that there will never be a solution to as long as there are moving cars and moving people, and self-driving vehicles are no exception to that. You’ll never run out of imaginary scenarios for any system, human or automated, to fail. But it is in order to reduce the number of such scenarios and help establish trust, not to render tragedy impossible, that every self-driving car should robustly and provably prefer its own destruction to that of a person outside itself.

We are not aiming for a complete solution, just an intuitive one. Self-driving cars will, say, always brake to merge, never cross a double yellow in normal traffic, and so on and so forth — and will crash themselves rather than hit a pedestrian. Regardless of the specifics and limitations of the model, that’s a behavior anyone can understand, including those who must consent to it.

Although even the most hard-bitten existentialist would be unlikely to support a systematic framework for suicide, it makes a difference when “suicide” is more likely to mean a fender bender and damage to one’s pocket rather than the death or injury of another. To destroy oneself is different when there is no self to destroy, and, practically speaking, the risk to passengers, equipped with airbags and seat belts, is far less than the risk to pedestrians.

How exactly would this all be accomplished in practice? Well, it could of course be required by transportation authorities, like seat belts and other safety measures. But unlike seat belts, the proprietary and complex inner workings of an autonomous system aren’t easily verifiable by non-experts. There are ways, but we should be wary of putting ourselves in a position where we have to trust not a technology but the company that administrates it. Either can fail us, but only one can betray us.

We should be wary of putting ourselves in a position where we have to trust not a technology but the company that administrates it. Either can fail us, but only one can betray us.
Perhaps there will be no need to rely on regulators, though: No brand of car wants to have its vehicles associated with running down a pedestrian. Today there are probably more accidents in Civics and Camrys than anything else, but no one thinks that makes them dangerous to drive — it just means more people drive them, and people make mistakes like anyone else.

On the other hand, if an automaker’s brand of self-driving vehicle hits someone, it’s obvious (and right) that the company will bear the blame. And consumers will see that — for one thing, it will be widely reported, and for another, there will probably be highly robust tracking of this kind of thing, including footage and logs from these accidents.

If automakers want to avoid pedestrian strikes and fatalities, they will incorporate something like this self-destruction protocol in their cars as a last line of defense, even if it leads to a net increase in autonomous collisions. It would be much preferable to be known as having a cautious AI than a killer one. So I think that, like other safety mechanisms, this or something like it will be included and, I hope, publicized on every car not because it’s required, but because it makes sense.

People deserve to know how things like self-driving cars work, even if few people on the planet can truly understand the complex computations and algorithms that govern them. They should, like regular cars, be able to be understood at a surface level. This case of understanding them at an extreme end of their behavior is not one that will be relevant every day, but it is a crucial one because it is something that matters to us at a gut level: knowing that these cars aren’t evaluating us as targets via mysterious and fundamentally inadequate algorithms.

To repurpose Camus: “These are facts the heart can feel; Yet they call for careful study before they become clear to the intellect.” Start with a simple solution we feel to be just and work backward from there. And soon — because this is no longer a thought experiment.

Micromobility’s next big opportunities

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 12:14 PM PST

Launching and operating shared bikes and scooters has lost its novelty. Worldwide, numerous companies are operating shared micromobility services — so many that the industry is well into a consolidation phase.

In Latin America, Grow Mobility formed as part of a merger between micromobility providers Grin and Yellow. In the U.S., Bird acquired Scoot. And, while not a traditional consolidation, Lime and Uber have partnered to include Lime’s scooters within the Uber app.

Meanwhile, we now have a handful of players operating in the direct-to-consumer model; Unagi, Boosted and even Bird has started selling direct to consumers.

Despite the over-saturation of the market, there are still opportunities for new players. Currently, there are two key areas that have yet to see a lot of action and are therefore ripe for disruption.

Those opportunities include creating a software ecosystem on top of bikes and scooters and improving unit economics by focusing on batteries.

As you may remember, business and mobility analyst Horace Dediu recently told me these micromobility vehicles have an opportunity to also be software hubs. In fact, he said it's where he expects bigger players like Google and Apple to enter the space.

Already, at least one startup is taking steps to become the operating system for micromobility vehicles. Tortoise, a startup founded by former Uber executive Dmitry Shevelenko, is pursuing autonomous repositioning of scooters.

Apple Music introduces Replay, a playlist of your top songs of the year

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 12:00 PM PST

Apple Music is taking on Spotify with the launch of a new feature, Apple Music Replay, that will allow subscribers to take a look back at their favorite music from 2019. The feature is similar in some ways to Spotify’s popular year-end review, known as Wrapped, but Apple’s version is more than just an annual summary — it’s an ongoing experience.

With Apple Music Replay, subscribers will get a playlist of their top songs from 2019, plus playlists for every year you’ve subscribed to Apple Music, retroactively. These can be added to your Apple Music Library, so you can stream them at any time, even when offline. Like any playlist, your Apple Music Replay can also be shared with others, allowing you to compare top songs with friends, for example, or post to social media.

But while Spotify’s Wrapped is more of an annual retrospective, Apple Music Replay will continue to be updated all year long, evolving as your musical tastes and interests do throughout the year. The playlist and its associated data insights will be updated on Sundays to reflect subscribers’ latest listening activity, says Apple.

That makes the playlist more of a compilation of favorites, which continues to add value throughout the year — not just at the end. And when January rolls around, the 2020 Replay playlist will be a blank slate to fill with your favorites from Apple Music’s catalog of 60 million tracks.

Apple Music Replay is available from the Apple Music app across platforms, including via the web at replay.music.apple.com.

Beyond being fun to use, the addition of Apple Music Replay aims to help Apple better compete against Spotify, which leverages streaming data to create numerous personalized playlists and features for its users and subscribers. Spotify recently reported better-than-expected earnings and said it turned a profit, as it reached 113 million premium subscribers by September’s end. Apple, meanwhile, had 60 million paying subscribers as of late June.

Atlassian expands Jira Service Desk beyond IT teams

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 11:56 AM PST

Atlassian today announced a set of new templates and workflows for Jira Service Desk that were purpose-built for HR, legal and facilities teams. Service Desk started six years ago as a version of Jira that was mostly meant for IT departments. Atlassian, however, found that other teams inside the companies that adopted it started to use it as well, including various teams at Twitter and Airbnb, for example. With today’s update, it’s now making it easier for these teams, at least in legal, HR and facilities, to get started with Jira Service Desk without having to customize the product themselves.

“Over the last six years, one of the observations that we’ve made was that we need to provide really good services — the idea that we can provide great services to employees is really something that is really on the rise,” said Edwin Wong, the head of the company’s IT products. “I think in the past, maybe we were a bit more forgiving in terms of what employees expected from services departments. But today you’re just so used to great experiences in your consumer life and when you come to work, you expect the same.”

But lots of service teams, he argues, didn’t have the tools to provide this experience, yet they were looking for tools to streamline their workflows (think onboarding for HR teams, for example) and to move from manual processes to something more automated and modern. Jira was already flexible enough to allow them to do this, but the new set of templates now codifies these processes for them.

Wong stressed this isn’t just about tracking but also managing work across teams and providing them a more centralized hub for information. “One of the big challenges that we’ve seen from many of the customers that we’ve spoken to is the challenge of just figuring out where to go when you want something,” he said. “When I have a new employee, where do I go to ask for a new laptop? Is that the same process as telling my facilities teams that perhaps there is an issue with a bathroom?”

Atlassian is starting with these three templates because that’s where it saw the most immediate need. Over time, I’m sure we’ll see the company get into other verticals as well.

What AI startups need to achieve before VCs will invest

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 11:01 AM PST

Funding of artificial intelligence-focused companies reached approximately $9.3 billion in the U.S. in 2018, an amount that will continue to rise as the transformative impact of AI is realized. That said, not every AI startup has what it takes to secure an investment and scale to success.

So, what do venture capitalists look for when considering an investment in an AI company?

What we look for in all startups

Some fundamentals are important in any of our investments, AI or otherwise. First, entrepreneurs need to articulate that they are solving a large and important problem. It may sound strange, but finding the right problem can be more difficult than finding the right solution. Entrepreneurs need to demonstrate that customers will be willing to switch from what they're currently using and pay for the new solution.

The team must demonstrate their competence in the domain, their functional skills and above all, their persistence and commitment. The best ideas likely won't succeed if the team isn't able to execute. Setting and achieving realistic milestones is a good way to keep operators and investors aligned. Successful entrepreneurs need to show why their solution offers superior value to competitors in the market — or, in the minority of cases where there is an unresolved need — why they're in the best position to solve it.

In addition, the team must clearly explain how their technology works, how it differs and is advantageous relative to existing competitors and must explain to investors how that competitive advantage can be sustained.

For AI entrepreneurs, there are additional factors that must be addressed. Why? It is fairly clear that we're in the early stages of this burgeoning industry which stands to revolutionize sectors from healthcare to fintech, logistics to transportation and beyond. Standards have not been settled, there is a shortage of personnel, large companies are still struggling with deployment, and much of the talent is concentrated in a few large companies and academic institutions. In addition, there are regulatory challenges that are complex and growing due to the nature of the technology’s evolutionary aspect.

Here are five things we like to see AI entrepreneurs demonstrate before making an investment:

Demonstrate mastery over their data and its value: AI needs big data to succeed. There are two models: companies can either help customers add value to their data or build a data business using AI. In either case, startups must demonstrate that the data is reliable, secure and compliant with all regulatory rules. They must also demonstrate that AI is adding value to their own data — it must explain something, derive an explanation, identify important trends, optimize or otherwise deliver value.

With the sheer abundance of data available for companies to collect today, it's imperative that startups have an agile infrastructure in place that allows them to store, access and analyze this data efficiently. A data-driven startup must become ever more responsive, proactive and consistent over time.

AI entrepreneurs should know that while machine learning can be applied to many problems, it may not always yield accurate predictions in every situation. Models may fail for a variety of reasons, one of which is inadequate, inconsistent or variable data. Successful mastery of the data demonstrates to customers that the data stream is robust, consistent and that the model can adapt if the data sources change.

Entrepreneurs can better address their customer needs if they can demonstrate a fast, efficient way to normalize and label the data using meta tagging and other techniques.

Remember that transparency is a virtue: There is an increased need in certain industries — such as financial services — to explain to regulators how the sausage is  made, so to speak. As a result, entrepreneurs must be able to demonstrate explainability to show how the model arrived at the result (for example, a credit score). This brings us to an additional issue about accounting for bias in models and, here again, the entrepreneur must show the ability to detect and correct bias as soon as they are found.

Rocket Lab’s new ‘Rosie the Robot’ speeds up launch vehicle production — by a lot

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 10:17 AM PST

Rocket launch startup Rocket Lab is all about building out rapid-response space-launch capabilities, and founder/CEO Peter Beck is showing off its latest advancement in service of that goal: A room-sized manufacturing robot named “Rosie.”

Rosie is tasked with processing the carbon composite components of Rocket Lab’s Electron launch vehicle. That translates to basically getting the rocket flight-ready, and there’s a lot involved in that — it’s a process that normally can take “hundreds of hours,” according to Beck. So how fast can Rosie manage the same task?

“We can produce one launch vehicle in this machine every 12 hours,” Beck says in the video. That includes “every bit of marking, every bit of machining, every bit of drilling,” he adds.

This key new automation tool essentially takes something that was highly bespoke and manual and turns it into something eminently repeatable and expedited, which is a necessary ingredient if Rocket Lab is ever to accomplish its goal of providing high-frequency launches to small satellite customers with very little turnaround time. The company’s New Zealand launch facility recently landed an FAA license that helps sketch out the extent of its ambition, as it’s technically cleared to launch rockets as often as every 72 hours.

In addition to innovations like Rosie, Rocket Lab uses 3D printing for components of its launch vehicle engines that result in single-day turnaround for production, versus weeks using more traditional methods. It’s also now working on an ambitious plan for rocket recovery, which should help further with providing high-frequency launch capabilities as it’ll mean they don’t have to build entirely new launch vehicles for every mission.

GitHub launches a mobile app, smarter notifications and improved code search

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 10:00 AM PST

At its annual Universe conference today, Microsoft -owned GitHub announced a couple of new products, as well as the general availability of a number of tools that developers have been able to test for the last few months. The two announcements that developers will likely be most interested in are the launch of GitHub’s first native mobile app and an improved notifications experience. But in addition to that, it is also taking GitHub Actions, the company’s workflow automation and CI/CD solution, as well as GitHub Packages, out of beta. GitHub is also improving its code search, adding scheduled reminders and launching a pre-release program that will allow users to try out new features before they are ready for a wider rollout.

GitHub is also extending its sponsor program, which until now allowed you to tip individual open-source contributors for their work, to the project level. With GitHub Sponsors, anybody can help fund a project and the members of that project then get to choose how to use the money. These projects have to be open source and have a corporate or nonprofit entity attached to it (and a bank account).

“Developers are what’s driving us and we’re building the tools and the experiences to help them come together to create the world’s most important technologies and to do it on an open platform and ecosystem,” GitHub SVP of Product Shanku Niyogi told me. Today’s announcements, he said, are driven by the company’s mission to improve the developer experience. Over the course of the last year, the company launched well over 150 new features and enhancements, Niyogi stressed. For its Universe show, the company decided to highlight the new mobile app and notification enhancements, though.

The new mobile app, which is now out in beta for iOS, with Android support coming soon, offers all of the basic features you’d want from a mobile app like this. The team decided to focus squarely on the kind of mobile use cases that would make the most sense for a developer on the go, so you’ll be able to share feedback on discussions, review a few lines of code and merge changes, but this isn’t meant to be a tool that replicated the full GitHub experience, though at least on the iPad, you do get a bit more screen real estate to work with.

“When you start to look at the tablet experience, that then extends out because you now got more space,” explained Niyogi. “You can look at the code, you can navigate some of that, we support some of the key same keyboard shortcuts that github.com does to be able to look at a larger amount of content and a larger amount of code. So, the idea is the experience scales with the mobile devices you have, and but it’s also designed for the things you’re likely to do when you’re not using your computer.”

Others have built mobile apps for GitHub before, of course, and it turns out that the developers of GitHawk, which was launched by a group of engineers from Instagram, recently joined GitHub to help the company in its efforts to get this new app off the ground.

The second major new feature is the improved notifications experience. As every GitHub user on even a medium-sized team knows, GitHub’s current set of notifications can quickly become overwhelming. That’s something the GitHub team was also keenly aware of, so the company decided to build a vastly improved system that includes filters, as well as an inbox for all of your notifications right inside of GitHub.

“The experience for developers today can result in an inbox in Gmail or whatever email client you use with tons and tons of notifications — and it can end up being kind of hard to know what matters and what’s just noise,” Kelly Stirman, GitHub’ VP of Strategy and Product Management, said. “We’ve done a bunch of things over the last year to make notifications better, but what we’ve done is a big step. We’ve reimagined what notifications should be.”

Using filters and rules, developers can zero in on the notifications that matter to them, all without flooding your inbox with unnecessary noise. Developers can customize these filters to their hearts’ content. That’s also where the new mobile experience fits in well. “Many times, the notification will be sent to you when you’re not at your computer, when you’re not at your desktop,” noted Stirman. “And that notification might be somebody asking for your help to unblock something. And so it’s natural we think that we need to extend the GitHub experience beyond the desktop to a mobile experience.”

Talking about notifications: GitHub also today announced a new feature in a limited preview that adds a few more notifications to your inbox. You can now set up scheduled reminders for pending code reviews.

Among the rest of today’s announcements, the improved code search stands out because that’s definitely an area where some improvements were necessary. This new code search is currently in limited beta, but should roll out to all users over the next few months. It’ll introduce a completely new search experience, the company says, that can match special characters and casing, among other things.

Also new are code review assignments, now in public beta, and a new way to navigate code on GitHub.

Volkswagen’s $800M Tennessee factory expansion to include battery pack plant

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:53 AM PST

Volkswagen said Wednesday it will build a battery pack assembly facility as part of an $800 million expansion project that will turn the Chattanooga, Tenn. factory into its North American base for manufacturing electric vehicles.

The Chattanooga factory expansion, which includes a 564,000-square-foot addition to the body shop and is expected to create 1,000 new jobs at the plant, has been in the works for some time now. But the battery pack assembly announcement, while logical, came as a surprise.

“This is a big, big moment for this company,” Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America said in a statement. “Expanding local production sets the foundation for our sustainable growth in the U.S. Electric vehicles are the future of mobility and Volkswagen will build them for millions of people.”

The automaker’s Chattanooga expansion is just a piece of its broader plan to move away from diesel in the wake of the emissions cheating scandal that erupted in 2015. Globally, VW Group plans to commit almost $50 billion through 2023 toward the development and production of electric vehicles and digital services.

The Tennessee factory (along with the other new facilities) will produce electric vehicles using Volkswagen's modular electric toolkit chassis, or MEB, introduced by the company in 2016. The MEB is a flexible modular system — really a matrix of common parts — for producing electric vehicles that VW says makes it more efficient and cost-effective.

The company also built a European facility in Zwickau, Germany. Earlier this month, VW began production of the ID. 3 electric vehicle began at the Zwickau factory. By 2022, VW’s MEB vehicles will be produced at eight locations on three continents.

EV-production at facilities are expected to come online in Anting and Foshan in China in 2020, and in the German cities of Emden and Hanover by 2022.

Volkswagen currently produces the midsize Atlas SUV and the Passat sedan at the Chattanooga factory. Production of its electric vehicles is set to begin in Chattanooga in 2022. The first model will be an SUV of the ID. family.

Disney+ has already attracted over 10 million subscribers

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:52 AM PST

Disney’s launch of its premium subscription streaming service Disney+ was not without issues — high demand resulted in content not being accessible for hours on its first day of availability. The company cited higher-than-expected demand as a factor, and now we have a rough estimate of the size of that demand — Disney has revealed that it signed up 10 million users since its Tuesday debut.

That’s a lot of subscribers in a very short period. To put it in perspective, Netflix recently reported 158 million subscribers, but that’s its total audience after many years of availability, across a broad global market. Disney+ is launching only in a few markets around the world, including the U.S., Canada and the Netherlands, while Netflix has grown to cover much of the world. Netflix also started out with much lower subscriber counts when it was U.S.-only, with 7.38 million in 2007, the year it began offering streaming for the first time.

Disney+ has been offering customers in the U.S. the ability to pre-order their accounts for a couple of months, so its subscriber count represents a bit of runway and marketing effort, rather than just pent-up demand. It’s also offering a year of free access to qualifying Verizon subscribers. But that’s still a very impressive debut for a brand new streaming offering, and a firm basis upon which Disney can grow its audience through future releases and marketing efforts.

Google Maps adds a new translation feature that speaks place names out loud

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:50 AM PST

Google Maps is adding a feature that will make it easier for people traveling in foreign countries where they don’t speak the local language: built-in translation with text-to-speech support. The feature will allow users to tap on a new speaker button next to a place name or address, to have Google Maps say the name out loud — a particularly useful addition for anyone who has needed to communicate about directions when traveling.

Most people who have ventured outside of their home country, at some point, needed to ask for directions or tell a taxi driver their destination. And when you don’t speak the language, that can be difficult to do — even with the aid of translation apps or language dictionaries, as they’re often more focused on everyday vocabulary, not necessarily on the proper names of places.

Now, instead of struggling with pronunciation and having awkward conversations or even handing over your phone to a cab driver, you can tap a button.

In addition, Google Maps will also now link you to the Google Translate app if you need to continue the conversation further.

The new feature works by detecting which language your phone is currently using, then determining when to show you the translate option. For example, an English speaker who was browsing a map of Tokyo may see the speaker icon, but may not see the icon if looking at places in the U.S.

It’s somewhat surprising this sort of text-to-speech functionality wasn’t already included in Google Maps, given its use for travel purposes. But Google has more recently been waking up to the power of integrating Google Translate into other experiences outside the app itself, including in Google Home, Google Assistant, Google Lens and more. And in the end, this translation support makes Google’s products more powerful and competitive — and for consumers, more useful.

Translate for Google Maps is rolling out this month on iOS and Android, with initial support for 50 languages. More languages will arrive in the future, Google says.

After selling enterprise biz, Docker lands $35M investment and new CEO

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:21 AM PST

In what’s proving to be an interesting day for Docker, it announced it has received a $35 million investment from existing investors Benchmark Capital and Insight Partners.

It also announced the company has named long-time Chief Product Officer Scott Johnston as CEO. Johnston is the third CEO at Docker this year, replacing Rob Bearden, who replaced Steve Singh after he stepped down in May.

The news came shortly after Mirantis had announced it had purchased Docker’s enterprise business. The moves are curious to say the least, but Johnston says that he still sees an opportunity for the company helping developers use Docker, the popular containerization engine that has struggled to find a business model.

“Specifically, we are investing in expanding our cloud services to enable developers to quickly discover technologies for use when building applications, to easily share these apps with teammates and the community, and to run apps frictionlessly on any Kubernetes endpoint, whether locally or in the cloud," Johnston said in a statement.

Bearden said that the company decided to go in this direction after carefully studying its existing business models. “After conducting thorough analysis with the management team and the Board of Directors, we determined that Docker had two very distinct and different businesses: one an active developer business, and the other a growing enterprise business. We also found that the product and the financial models were vastly different. This led to the decision to restructure the company and separate the two businesses, which is the best thing for customers and to enable Docker's industry-leading technology to thrive,” he said in a statement.

Prior to today’s announcement, the company had raised more than $272 million, according to Crunchbase data. Now Benchmark and Insight are throwing it a $35 million lifeline to try one more time to build a successful business on top of the open-source Docker project.

Facebook says government demands for user data are at a record high

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:15 AM PST

Facebook’s latest transparency report is out.

The social media giant said the number of government demands for user data increased by 16% to 128,617 demands during the first half of this year compared to the second half of last year.

That’s the highest number of government demands it has received in any reporting period since it published its first transparency report in 2013.

The U.S. government led the way with the most number of requests — 50,741 demands for user data resulting in some account or user data given to authorities in 88% of cases. Facebook said two-thirds of all the U.S. government’s requests came with a gag order, preventing the company from telling the user about the request for their data.

But Facebook said it was able to release details of 11 so-called national security letters (NSLs) for the first time after their gag provisions were lifted during the period. National security letters can compel companies to turn over non-content data at the request of the FBI. These letters are not approved by a judge, and often come with a gag order preventing their disclosure. But since the Freedom Act passed in 2015, companies have been allowed to request the lifting of those gag orders.

The report also said the social media giant had detected 67 disruptions of its services in 15 countries, compared to 53 disruptions in nine countries during the second half of last year.

And, the report said Facebook also pulled 11.6 million pieces of content, up from 5.8 million in the same period a year earlier, which Facebook said violated its policies on child nudity and sexual exploitation of children.

The social media giant also included Instagram in its report for the first time, including removing 1.68 million pieces of content during the second and third quarter of the year.

Mirantis acquires Docker Enterprise

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 08:45 AM PST

Mirantis today announced that it has acquired Docker’s Enterprise business and team. Docker Enterprise was very much the heart of Docker’s product lineup, so this sale leaves Docker as a shell of its former, high-flying unicorn self. Docker itself, which installed a new CEO earlier this year, says it will continue to focus on tools that will advance developers’ workflows. Mirantis will keep the Docker Enterprise brand alive, though, which will surely not create any confusion.

With this deal, Mirantis is acquiring Docker Enterprise Technology Platform and all associated IP: Docker Enterprise Engine, Docker Trusted Registry, Docker Unified Control Plane and Docker CLI. It will also inherit all Docker Enterprise customers and contracts, as well as its strategic technology alliances and partner programs. Docker and Mirantis say they will both continue to work on the Docker platform’s open-source pieces.

The companies did not disclose the price of the acquisition, but it’s surely nowhere near Docker’s valuation during any of its last funding rounds. Indeed, it’s no secret that Docker’s fortunes changed quite a bit over the years, from leading the container revolution to becoming somewhat of an afterthought after Google open-sourced Kubernetes and the rest of the industry coalesced around it. It still had a healthy enterprise business, though, with plenty of large customers among the large enterprises. The company says about a third of Fortune 100 and a fifth of Global 500 companies use Docker Enterprise, which is a statistic most companies would love to be able to highlight — and which makes this sale a bit puzzling from Docker’s side, unless the company assumed that few of these customers were going to continue to bet on its technology.

Update: for reasons only known to Docker’s communications team, we weren’t told about this beforehand, but the company also today announced that it has raised a $35 million funding round from Benchmark. This doesn’t change the overall gist of the story below, but it does highlight the company’s new direction.

Here is what Docker itself had to say. “Docker is ushering in a new era with a return to our roots by focusing on advancing developers' workflows when building, sharing and running modern applications. As part of this refocus, Mirantis announced it has acquired the Docker Enterprise platform business,” Docker said in a statement when asked about this change. “Moving forward, we will expand Docker Desktop and Docker Hub's roles in the developer workflow for modern apps. Specifically, we are investing in expanding our cloud services to enable developers to quickly discover technologies for use when building applications, to easily share these apps with teammates and the community, and to run apps frictionlessly on any Kubernetes endpoint, whether locally or in the cloud.”

Mirantis itself, too, went through its ups and downs. While it started as a well-funded OpenStack distribution, today’s Mirantis focuses on offering a Kubernetes-centric on-premises cloud platform and application delivery. As the company’s CEO Adrian Ionel told me ahead of today’s announcement, today is possibly the most important day for the company.

So what will Mirantis do with Docker Enterprise? “Docker Enterprise is absolutely aligned and an accelerator of the direction that we were already on,” Ionel told me. “We were very much moving towards Kubernetes and containers aimed at multi-cloud and hybrid and edge use cases, with these goals to deliver a consistent experience to developers on any infrastructure anywhere — public clouds, hybrid clouds, multi-cloud and edge use cases — and make it very easy, on-demand, and remove any operational concerns or burdens for developers or infrastructure owners.”

Mirantis previously had about 450 employees. With this acquisition, it gains another 300 former Docker employees that it needs to integrate into its organization. Docker’s field marketing and sales teams will remain separate for some time, though, Ionel said, before they will be integrated. “Our most important goal is to create no disruptions for customers,” he noted. “So we’ll maintain an excellent customer experience, while at the same time bringing the teams together.”

This also means that for current Docker Enterprise customers, nothing will change in the near future. Mirantis says that it will accelerate the development of the product and merge its Kubernetes and lifecycle management technology into it. Over time, it will also offer a managed services solutions for Docker Enterprise.

While there is already some overlap between Mirantis’ and Docker Enterprise’s customer base, Mirantis will pick up about 700 new enterprise customers with this acquisition.

With this, Ionel argues, Mirantis is positioned to go up against large players like VMware and IBM/Red Hat. “We are the one real cloud-native player with meaningful scale to provide an alternative to them without lock-in into a legacy or existing technology stack.”

While this is clearly a day the Mirantis team is celebrating, it’s hard not to look at this as the end of an era for Docker, too. The company says it will share more about its future plans today, but didn’t make any spokespeople available ahead of this announcement.

Yahoo Japan and Line are reportedly going to merge

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 08:41 AM PST

According to Nikkei, messaging app Line and Yahoo Japan are about to merge and form a single tech company. Despite the name, Yahoo Japan is currently 100% owned by Z Holdings, a company that is controlled by Japanese telecom company SoftBank (Yahoo Japan isn’t related with TechCrunch's parent company Verizon Media). Line Corporation is owned by Naver Corporation, a South Korean internet giant.

The two companies are still discussing terms of the deal according to Nikkei. But you could imagine Z Holdings becoming a 50-50 joint venture between SoftBank and Naver, with Z Holdings owning both Yahoo Japan and Line.

Line operates one of the most popular messaging apps in Japan. In addition to conversations, the company operates Line Pay, Line Taxi and other services. But competition has been fierce in the messaging space.

Yahoo Japan was originally formed by Yahoo and SoftBank in the late 1990s. When Verizon acquired Yahoo in 2017, Verizon didn't acquire Yahoo's stake in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan. Yahoo created a spin-out company called Altaba to hold those stakes.

Altaba first sold its stake in Yahoo Japan. In July 2018, SoftBank acquired part of Altaba's stake in Yahoo Japan in order to increase its ownership of Yahoo Japan. Altaba later sold its remaining Yahoo Japan shares, its Alibaba shares and shut down. In 2019, SoftBank received additional shares to become Yahoo Japan's parent company.

Yahoo Japan is a household name and a big internet conglomerate in Japan. It has an online advertising business, an e-commerce business, finance services and more. Yahoo Japan and Line probably hope to reach more users and boost engagement with the merger.

We've reached out to Line Corporation and Z Holdings and will update if we hear back.

How to Deodorize Clothing

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 04:00 PM PST

Some odors on clothing can be difficult to remove, not to mention embarrassing. By taking advantage of natural odor neutralizers, or experimenting with specialty detergents, you can find the method that works best for you, and maybe even save money in the process.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Deodorizing Naturally

  1. Add baking soda to your laundry to neutralize odors. Baking soda has long been used to deodorize clothing and to pre-treat stains. Adding one cup of baking soda to a load of laundry can help remove unwanted smells.
    Deodorize Clothing Step 1.jpg
    • Sometimes simply adding baking soda to your wash cycle isn't enough. For hard-to-remove odors, add ½ cup baking soda per gallon of water in a large bucket or sink. Be sure to swirl the clothes around to ensure they are fully submerged and to distribute the baking soda evenly throughout the mixture.
    • If you don't have time to wash sweaty, smelly clothes immediately, sprinkle some baking soda on them before putting them into your laundry bin to control odors and absorb moisture.
  2. Mix white vinegar into the wash cycle. Add about ¼ cup of white vinegar during the final rinse cycle to help remove odors from sweat, smoke, and bacteria.[1]
    Deodorize Clothing Step 2.jpg
  3. Make a vodka dilution. Use 1 part vodka to 1 part water and store the solution in a jug (don't worry about long-term storage, your solution will last for a very long time). Next, pour some solution into a spray bottle and spray onto smelly clothes.
    Deodorize Clothing Step 3.jpg
    • Do a spot-test first in a small, unnoticeable area to make sure this solution won't damage your clothes. This way to deodorize your clothes may not be ideal for certain fabrics, like leather or silk.
    • If you don't have a spray bottle, they can usually be found at restaurant supply stores or anywhere commercial cleaning products are sold.
    • Although vodka is an effective deodorizer, it doesn't clean your clothes or remove stains, so don't expect your solution to produce results in these areas.
  4. Make a fabric refresher with essential oils. Use 1 cup of vinegar, 1 cup of water, and ½ teaspoon of your favorite essential oil. Tea tree, lavender, lemon, and grapefruit are all popular options. Pour your mixture into a spray bottle and spritz your clothes between wash cycles. [2]
    Deodorize Clothing Step 4.jpg

[Edit]Using Specialty Detergents

  1. Soak your clothes in a Borax solution. Add ½ cup of Borax for every half gallon of water you use and soak your clothes for at least 30 minutes in a large sink or tub.[3] Borax is very effective in removing odors due to certain aspects of its chemical makeup that inhibit the metabolic processes of many odor-causing bacteria.
    Deodorize Clothing Step 5.jpg
    • Be sure to wash your clothes after using Borax. Another useful property of Borax is that it actually increases the effectiveness of other laundry detergents. After you're done soaking your clothes, run them through the washing machine as you normally would and allow the unique chemical properties of Borax to work their magic!
  2. Use a sport wash. Specialty detergents like Nathan's Sport Wash or Sport Suds are specifically designed for removing body odor and bacteria from workout clothing, but their deodorizing properties usually do the trick for other unwanted smells. Simply add the recommended amount to your washing machine and wash as normal.[4]
    Deodorize Clothing Step 6.jpg
    • Some sport washes, like Sport Suds, are reportedly powerful enough to dissolve gunk on the inside of your washing machine. It's recommended to give your washing machine a deep clean before laundering your clothes with detergents like these.
  3. Make your own specialty detergent. Homemade specialty detergents can be just as effective as commercial products, if not more. Most recipes for homemade detergents call for a mix of natural and chemical ingredients. One popular recipe calls for 3 tablespoons Borax, 3 tablespoons baking soda, and 2 tablespoons Dawn dishwashing liquid. Add these to 2 cups hot water in a gallon jug and shake until well mixed. Then, add cold water until the jug is full.[5]
    Deodorize Clothing Step 7.jpg
    • Making your own specialty detergent is also remarkably cost effective. You could reduce your cost per load of laundry from $.50 to $.03!

[Edit]Tips

  • Try air drying your clothes to facilitate off-gassing of fumes and chemicals. Drying naturally can give your clothes a fresh, breezy scent without the expense of dryer sheets.
  • Deep clean your washing machine with hot water and bleach to remove any buildup, mold, and bacteria-they could give your clothes an unwanted smell.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Cleaning products like Borax and other specialty detergents are harmful when ingested. Always keep these products out of reach of children.

[Edit]Things You'll Need

  • Baking Soda
  • Inexpensive vodka
  • Borax
  • Spray Bottle
  • Specialty laundry detergent

How to Spread Kindness

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 08:00 AM PST

Spreading kindness is beneficial for you and the recipients of your kindness. The happiness we feel from giving and receiving kindness promotes general good health. You can spread kindness in many ways, such as by being friendly and generous, and infusing the world and your community with positivity over the holidays and every day. Giving produces a "ripple" or "domino" effect, which can grow into an entire network of positivity. Although it's helpful when you donate financially or with things like food and clothing, there are also ways you can spread kindness without spending a penny. Offering to babysit or pet sit, giving compliments, and simply minding your manners are just a few ways you can help to make kindness contagious.[1]

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Behaving Kindly and Positively in Your Everyday Life

  1. Smile. Look people in the eyes when you give them a grin. This is such a simple way to spread kindness, and it's free! Be generous with your smile and put feeling into it. Smile at store clerks, waiters and baristas, mail carriers, and other people you come in contact with. This easy gesture can brighten people's day.
    Spread Kindness Step 1.jpg
  2. Mind your manners. Good manners are the art of making people feel at ease.[2] Treat others respectfully, as well or even better than you'd wish to be treated. Aim to be cooperative and thoughtful.[3]
    Spread Kindness Step 2.jpg
    • If you borrow things, don't forget to give them back.[4]
    • Try to extend invitations to people who have previously invited you to an event.
    • Work on your interpersonal skills. For example, think of the nonverbal communication you may be sending with your body language. Interact with people using open and relaxed body language.
  3. Encourage children. One of the best ways to spread kindness is by starting at home. If you have children, instill in them the importance of being kind to all beings. Read and tell them stories about kindness. Teach them forgiveness and gratitude as well as respect for all others, regardless of race, gender, origin, culture or socio-economic status.[5]
    Spread Kindness Step 3.jpg
    • Discuss your acts of kindness as a family at dinner.[6]
  4. Be compassionate. Be an active listener without judging. Sometimes advice isn't needed, and others just want to be heard. In order to develop better compassion for others, you should practice self-compassion as well by soothing yourself when you need it. When someone lets you down, remind yourself that people struggle silently for many reasons. Don't be quick to anger or hold a grudge.[7]
    Spread Kindness Step 4.jpg
    • The other person may be going through something you don't know about that caused them to be tardy for a meeting, be snappy, or otherwise offend you.[8] Keep in mind that we all make mistakes; there could be any number of reasons for the person's lack of acceptable behavior.
    • Tell yourself at the start of each day that you won't judge anyone.[9]
    • Give people your full attention. Don't interrupt, act condescending, fiddle with your phone or be otherwise rude.
    • For example, you can practice self-compassion by breathing deeply and releasing the tension in your muscles. Hold your hand over your heart. Focus on your breathing and imagine that you're using it to send warm compassion throughout your body. Think of a positive self-affirmation, such as "Kindness is a strength. You are kind and capable."
  5. Express gratitude. Tip generously when you can.[10] Tell your loved ones why you're grateful for them. Be appreciative and express your respect and admiration for others.[11]
    Spread Kindness Step 5.jpg
    • Try telling someone in your life, "You inspire me to be a better person through your…" List specific things you appreciate about that person. If you don't feel comfortable saying it in person, tell them through a note or online message.
  6. Give compliments. When you think something nice about someone else, don't keep it to yourself – say it! You can also do this online by "liking" people's posts and tweeting good words to people.[12]
    Spread Kindness Step 6.jpg
    • For instance, like ten things on someone's Facebook profile or Instagram feed. Repeat the favor for others, for example, by making a habit of doing this every Sunday.
    • Try saying, "What a nice outfit!"
  7. Refrain from negativity. Be mindful of not only your words, but also your thoughts. Thinking positively can help you approach the world with kindness. Start a day at a time, trying not to speak negatively. You may slip up, but stick with it until it becomes second nature for you to avoid negative words and deflect negative thoughts.[13]
    Spread Kindness Step 7.jpg
  8. Drive courteously. Put safety first, and then consider being a polite driver. Use your turn signals when you're supposed to, and use your horn sparingly – only when you need to alert someone to your presence. Keep distance between your car and the one in front of you. Try not to block other people's access while you're sitting in traffic. Don't try to cut off a line of cars by using the breakdown lane or a turning lane to skip ahead in traffic.[14]
    Spread Kindness Step 8.jpg
    • Avoid blocking driveways, intersections, entrances and exits while traffic is stalled. Don't block the passing lane for an unreasonable amount of time.
    • Road rage is illegal, dangerous, and spreads negative emotions like stress and anger. The DMV suggests that if you find yourself having a strong emotional reaction, breathe deeply, pull over, put some calming music on, and remind yourself that you have complete control over your own intentions.[15]
  9. Be a kind shopper. Open and hold doors for people. Use shopping carts courteously. Always keep your cart to the side of the aisle so that people can get around you without having to wait for you to move. Offer your help if you see someone with their hands full, for instance an elderly person with a lot of items to load in their vehicle. If you see someone else vying for the same parking space, let them have it. Planning a little extra time can make it less stressful when you have to search for a parking spot or wait in store lines.[16]
    Spread Kindness Step 9.jpg
    • If you are walking towards a store and see someone looking for a shopping cart corral, offer to walk the cart back into the store. You can use the cart yourself and they don't have to find a cart return.
    • If you want to use your phone, try text messaging instead of talking so that you don't bother others around you. If you encounter rudeness, match it with kindness and patience.[17]
    • Use pleasantries like "please," "thank you," and "you're welcome." Don't get angry with salesclerks if an advertised product is out of stock. If you need to discuss it with an employee, ask for a manager, and present your problem clearly and calmly.
    • Don't forget to exercise caution. If you're in an isolated area like a parking lot empty of people, or if something feels off, don't approach a stranger even if they're crying for help. Go to a populated area and relay that the person needs help if they appear to be injured.
  10. Forgive people. You can give kindness an edge over negativity by refusing to hold onto anger and resentment. Forgiveness is something you should do for your own well-being, and you can lead others by example through living a more positive life. You can tell the other person that you've forgiven them, or just say the words "I forgive you" aloud to yourself along with the reasons why you're forgiving that person. You may be surprised at how freeing it feels![18]
    Spread Kindness Step 10.jpg
    • Forgiving someone doesn't mean you're excusing their actions or that you're forgetting the incident ever happened. It doesn't make you a pushover; it means you're exercising control over keeping negativity out of your life.
    • If someone is indebted to you, consider forgiving their debt, if possible.
    • If someone witnesses you letting a grievance go and expresses surprise about it, try saying, "I've decided to be a forgiver. You wouldn't believe how much more peaceful my life has become because of it!"
  11. Post something inspirational on social media. You never know when someone may need a pick-me-up and your simple gesture can reach them. Choose an uplifting quote or verse.[19] You can put it directly on your timeline on a site like Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Or, if you notice someone who seems down, send them the post directly along with an inspirational message.[20]
    Spread Kindness Step 11.jpg
    • Try saying something encouraging and nonjudgmental, like "I saw this verse and thought of you and your strength in dealing with difficulty."

[Edit]Spreading Kindness by Volunteering Your Time

  1. Give free advice about something you're good at. Think about what your skills are, whether they are work-related or hobby-based. If you know someone who could use the advice, seek them out. Otherwise, provide your advice on wikiHow and/or an online forum.
    Spread Kindness Step 12.jpg
    • Search for online forums where the topic you're an expert at is being discussed. You can contribute advice to the forum anonymously if desired.
  2. Babysit or pet sit. If you know someone who could use a babysitter or pet sitter, offer your services. For example, to a friend, neighbor or family member. You can also offer to walk someone's dog.
    Spread Kindness Step 13.jpg
    • Try saying, "If you ever need a babysitter, I'm happy to help free of charge!"
  3. Clear someone's driveway. If you live in an area that gets snow, the next time you are out shoveling or snowboarding, consider doing one or more of your neighbor's driveways as well. Try to clear the paths to their doors and their sidewalks also. Or, load your gear in the car and drive to a friend or family member's house and clear their driveway for them.
    Spread Kindness Step 14.jpg
  4. Volunteer for a nonprofit. Find a charity that means a lot to you and donate your time by volunteering. Look on their website for information about volunteering, or email them to ask how you might be able to help.
    Spread Kindness Step 15.jpg
    • If you don't have time to volunteer, consider making a financial donation instead. You may be able to deduct it on your income taxes! There are also sites you can do your ordinary shopping through, such as Amazon Smile, who will donate a portion of your purchase to the charity of your choice.[21]
    • If you're struggling with which charity to give to, ask yourself some questions. What values are important to you? What are you truly passionate about? Are there any particular current issues that matter to you the most? Do you envision a local or global impact from your contribution?[22]
    • Volunteer your professional services pro bono. Visit https://www.taprootplus.org/ to offer your help.
    • Share a charity on social media by posting a link to their information and/or a news article on how they're helping to spread kindness.[23]
  5. Volunteer to help feed the needy. Sign up to volunteer at a soup kitchen, local church or a campaign like Meal on Wheels. Locate soup kitchens near you by going to a search engine and typing in "find a soup kitchen." You should get a list back of local results. Alternately, visit HomelessShelterDirectory.org. Call or visit the soup kitchen's website to get more details about volunteering.
    Spread Kindness Step 16.jpg
  6. Tutor students. Offer your services to help young people with reading. Look for local literacy volunteer organizations by visiting a search engine and entering the name of your state with the words "Literacy Volunteers." If you're interested in tutoring in another subject, try searching for that subject under your state on a site like volunteermatch.org.[24]
    Spread Kindness Step 17.jpg

[Edit]Spreading Kindness by Donating and Gifting

  1. Pay someone's tab. When you go to a drive-thru for coffee or food and there's someone in line behind you, tell the cashier you'd like to pay for their order. Alternately, you can do this inside of a restaurant or coffee shop on your way out. The object is to do this discreetly and anonymously, without receiving accolades.
    Spread Kindness Step 18.jpg
    • Try saying, "I'd like to pay for the person behind me. Could you add it to my bill?" You could also request that the cashier relays a message, such as, "Please pay it forward someday!"
    • If you're uneasy about how much the bill might be, contribute a specific amount instead. For instance, try saying, "Here is ten dollars towards the bill of the person behind me." If the cashier mentions there will be change, tell them to keep it in their tip jar, if they have one, or ask them to give it back to person behind you.
  2. Invite others over for a meal. Call friends, neighbors or family over to visit. You can mention whether the invitation is for brunch, lunch, dinner or tea/coffee. You can be extra kind by telling them they don't need to bring anything but themselves.[25]
    Spread Kindness Step 19.jpg
  3. Put free stuff in the classifieds. You can do this on a website such as Craigslist (their "free" category is under the "for sale" section). Items you may want to consider giving away are vast, ranging from furniture and household items to tickets, toys, games and auto parts. When you don't need something any more and/or you're considering throwing it away (for example, on your trash bulk pickup date), consider whether you can give it away instead.
    Spread Kindness Step 20.jpg
  4. Donate food to the hungry. Donate canned food or other acceptable items to a food bank. You can organize a drive by getting friends and family together and asking them to bring items.[26]
    Spread Kindness Step 21.jpg
  5. Give away used clothing and shoes. Find a local church, Goodwill or other nonprofit. Another way to do this is look online for a drop-off box near you that accepts such items.
    Spread Kindness Step 22.jpg
  6. Send holiday cards or treats. Purchase holiday cards at a supermarket or stationary store and send some delightful snail mail to your loved ones. Another idea for spreading kindness over the holidays is delivering treats through a service or in person.
    Spread Kindness Step 23.jpg
    • There are many companies that offer mail order gifts of edible items such as Christmas cookies, nuts and other goodies. Consider ordering a box to arrive as a surprise for some of the people you know. Alternately, you can show up on their doorstep when you know they'll be home, with your family and a box of homemade sweets. Ring the doorbell, and when they answer, sing one or two of your favorite carols!
  7. Leave anonymous gifts in public areas. You can improvise with your own ideas of anonymous gifts, but a couple ideas to consider are stamps or books. Consider carrying a pack of sticky notes and a pen with you for the purpose of acts of kindness.
    Spread Kindness Step 24.jpg
    • Occasionally when you go to the post office to buy stamps, purchase extra and leave them in or beside the machine.[27]
    • Take a good book you're willing to part with and leave it in a public place with a note for someone else to enjoy it.[28]
    • Write something like, "This is for you. Please take it and try to pass on act of kindness to someone else."
  8. Bring flowers to a nursing home. A good way to do this is to buy or make two to four bouquets (or more). Select a nursing home from a local directory, like the yellow pages. When you arrive at the nursing home, find a staff member. Give one bouquet of flowers to them to keep, and ask them to give the other bouquets to residents who could use cheering up. This technique utilizes the rule of reciprocity, also called, "the norm of reciprocity."[29]
    Spread Kindness Step 25.jpg
    • If the staff member asks why you've given them flowers, just say, "It's a 'thank you' for passing these out." If you prefer not to do this in person, you can have a flower delivery company send bouquets with a similar note.
    • The rule of reciprocity means that the person you are generous to is likely to feel obliged to do you a favor in return. In this case, since you're giving a bouquet to a staff member as well, you increase the likelihood that they will pass the kindness on well, by thinking carefully about which residents would most benefit from the gift.
    • Alternately, you can bring other types of gifts besides flowers, such as homemade knitted scarves.
  9. Drop off items at a children's hospital. Find a local children's hospital in a directory. Call ahead first or visit the hospital's website to find out where you should bring the gifts and if there are any guidelines about what you can give. Prepare some items you think kids would enjoy, such as kids' craft sets, stuffed animals, or quilts.[30]
    Spread Kindness Step 26.jpg
  10. Set up a free coffee or hot cocoa stand. This is a great activity you can do with kids. Set it up as you might a lemonade stand, with a table, chairs, and a large sign. You can opt to serve coffee, hot chocolate, or both.[31]
    Spread Kindness Step 27.jpg
    • Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather. This is a nice way to spread kindness over the holidays!
    • Write on the sign, "FREE Coffee and Hot Cocoa!" Consider adding to the sign or somewhere at your table an advisory such as: "Warning: beverages may be very hot."
    • Items you may need are thermoses, coffee and/or hot chocolate, disposable coffee cups with lids, marshmallows, packs of sugar or artificial sweetener, packs of flavored or unflavored creamers, and stirrers.

[Edit]Tips

  • Seek out neighbors you haven't met yet. Introduce yourself and convey that it's a pleasure to meet them. Not only is this kind and polite, but you never know when you may need a neighbor's help in the future!
  • When shopping, leave children at home if possible. If that's not possible, ensure they are fed and well-rested, and be prepared to leave as soon as you sense any meltdown coming on.[32]
  • Set reminders on your calendar to celebrate kindness holidays. National Random Acts of Kindness Day is February 17th. Random Acts of Kindness Week is February 14th through the 20th. World Kindness Day is observed internationally on the 13th of November each year. Giving Tuesday is recognized on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
  • Use kindness to celebrate National Bullying Prevention Month. National Bullying Prevention Month occurs in October of every year. Anti-bullying is reactive, whereas being kind is proactive. You can help spread kindness by enriching this occasion with goodness rather than defensiveness.[33]

[Edit]Warnings

  • Don't weed or prune someone else's garden without permission. This tip circulates online as an "act of kindness" but is not advisable, as it can have the opposite effect. Even though your intentions are good, you can end up causing unintentional upset. Some weeds are beneficial and grown intentionally. As far as pruning, certain plants do better with their blooms and seed heads intact rather than pinched back (or the grower may simply prefer them the way they are).
  • Try not to overstep in your quest to be kind. For instance, don't discount someone else's personal beliefs or assume that you know their feelings or preferences. Keep in mind that different people have different boundaries.[34]

How to Prevent Electrical Shock

Posted: 13 Nov 2019 12:00 AM PST

Electrical shock is no laughing matter, as it often results in serious injury and can even be fatal. Educating yourself about avoiding electric shock can help keep you safe and prevent a dangerous accident. This wikiHow will give you tips on preventing electrical shock.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Preventing Electric Shock in Your Home

  1. Learn how electricity works. Knowledge is power, and the first step in preventing a dangerous situation is to understand the cause of electric shock. Read books, articles, websites and blogs about electricity and safety measures to take when working with electricity.[1]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • In basic terms, electricity naturally tries to flow to the earth or ground through any and all materials that will conduct an electrical current.[2]
    • Certain compounds, like wood and glass, are poor conductors of electricity. Other materials, like seawater and many metals, conduct very well. The human body is able to conduct a current largely due to the amount of sodium and water in the body, and an electric shock happens when electricity flows through parts of the body.[3]
    • This happens most often when a direct source of electricity is exposed to human contact. It may also flow into a person through another conductor, like a pool of water or a metal pole.[4]
    • To learn more about electricity and the cause of electric shock, read about it here or ask a trusted electrician.
  2. Know your limits. There are some simple electrical problems around the house that you can handle yourself. However, any time you are having serious or major electrical issues, you should hire a professional electrician. It may be expensive, but it is cheaper than a stint in the hospital.[5]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • There are essentially two types of electricians you can hire, "master" electricians and "journeyman" electricians. Both types are usually licensed by the state - but not always. Master electricians generally own businesses and can employ other licensed electricians and helpers or apprentices, while journeyman electricians can work for a master electrician or be self-employed and hire a single helper or apprentice. The rules of what each type of electrician may do and may not do varies by state, county or locality.
  3. Find out electricity requirements. The items and appliances in your household all have their own electrical requirements. Know the specific types of circuit breakers, fuses, and even lightbulbs that are required in your home. Make sure to replace them with the right parts when needed. Using incompatible parts could cause the equipment to function improperly, create an unsafe condition that may result in fire, injury or death.[6]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 3 Version 2.jpg
  4. Turn the electricity off. The first step that you need to take before attempting to fix any electrical problems yourself is to turn the electricity off in your home. This helps to ensure that, even if you make a mistake, you won't be electrocuted.[7]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • There will be a main electrical panel somewhere in your home (usually in a basement or garage). This panel has a simple on/off switch that allows you to cut the flow of electricity to your entire house. Make sure the switch on this panel is flipped to "off" before attempting any repairs.[8]
  5. Cover sockets and outlets. Covering outlets with wall panels is crucial for preventing accidental contact with wires, and is required by code. If you live with small children, it is also wise to use socket safety plugs to keep curious fingers safe from injury.[9]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 5 Version 2.jpg
  6. Install GFCI breakers, outlets and adapters. GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, devices are able to detect imbalances in the amount of electricity flowing through an appliance and will cut off power at the GFCI device. GFCI receptacles are required in most new construction homes in places where electric shock is possible, such as the bathroom, the kitchen, and outdoors, and can typically be installed in older homes for a low cost.[10]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 6 Version 2.jpg
  7. Avoid common mistakes. There are a handful of common mistakes people make when attempting to make electrical fixes in their homes. You need to be aware of these mistakes and take all the necessary precautions to avoid. Some things to avoid are:
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Avoid touching a bare wire that may be conducting a current.
    • Avoid overloading power strips and other receptacles with multiple plugs. Using only two plugs per outlet lessens the risk of shock and fire.[11]
    • Utilize three-prong plugs whenever possible. The third prong, which grounds the electrical current, should never be removed.
    • Never assume that someone else turned off the power source. Always check for yourself!
  8. Avoid water. Store and use electric devices away from water. Water and electricity do not mix well and appliances should always be kept away from any moisture. This will prevent any accidental shocks from occurring.
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Never use an electrical appliance while in the bath or shower.[12]
    • If your toaster or another electric appliance is near your kitchen sink, never use the running water and the appliance at the same time. Keep it unplugged when not in use.[13]
    • Store outdoor electrical equipment in a place where it will be kept dry, like a garage shelf.[14]
    • If a plugged-in appliance falls into water, do not attempt to retrieve it until you turn off power to the corresponding circuit. Once the power is off, you may retrieve the device. Once it is dry, it can be evaluated by an electrician to see if it is suitable for future use.[15]
  9. Replace worn or damaged equipment. Pay attention to the condition of your electric devices, and maintain them regularly. Some signs that indicate a need for repair are:[16]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • Sparking
    • Issuing of small shocks
    • Frayed or damaged cords
    • Heat from electrical outlets
    • Recurrent short-circuiting
    • These are only a few signs of wear and tear. If something else seems strange, contact an electrician. It's always better to be safe than sorry!
  10. Turn the power back on. Once you have made the necessary repairs and are ready to test the appliance or outlet you have fixed, turn the power switch on your main panel back to the "on" position. [17]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • You may need to reset your circuit breakers as well. To do this, flip the switch on each individual breaker to "off", then flip it back to "on".[18]
  11. Consider installing safety outlets and outlet covers. Safety outlets require some force to expose the female connector; outlet covers plug into the female connector of the outlet, do not conduct electricity, and are hard to remove for most young children.
Child Proof a Living Room Step 3.jpg
  12. Be sure that the appliance is set at the appropriate settings for the outlet you are plugging in. In a country that uses a higher voltage, there is a higher wattage, which can damage your electronics and risk electrical shock. Make sure that the appliance is set to the appropriate voltage input, and use a 100-240V to 110V or 220V transformer to avoid mistakes caused by accidentally plugging in appliances into the wrong voltage.
Maintain Appliances to Conserve Energy Step 20.jpg
    • Understand that the key difference between an adapter and a transformer is that an adapter just allows the appliance to be plugged in, but a transformer steps the voltage to the correct voltage. For chargers, an adapter is fine, but for laundry machines, kitchen appliances, hairdryers, and other appliances without a built-in transformer, use a transformer.

[Edit]Preventing Electric Shock On the Job

  1. Turn the power source off. Whenever a project involves exposure to electrical equipment or electricity, check and double-check that the power is off before beginning your work.[19]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • Again, there should be a main electric panel for the entire facility. Find this panel and flip the switch to off.[20]
  2. Wear protective gear. Rubber soled shoes and non-conductive gloves provide a barrier. Putting a rubber mat on the floor is another effective precaution. Rubber does not conduct electricity and will help you avoid getting shocked.[21]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 12 Version 2.jpg
  3. Exercise caution when operating power tools. Make sure that all of your tools have a three-pronged plug, and inspect all equipment for signs of damage. It is also important to turn off power tools before connecting them to electricity. Always keep power tools away from water, and clear the work area of flammable gasses, vapors, and solvents when tools are in use.[22]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 13 Version 2.jpg
  4. Double up. It is always wise to have a second person around to assist you when working with electricity. This second person can double check to ensure you have followed all necessary precautions. Also, if something does go wrong and you do get shocked, this second person can immediately get you the help you need.[23]
Prevent Electrical Shock Step 14 Version 2.jpg
    • Make sure you communicate well with this other person. Many electrical accidents occur because of miscommunication. You need to be able to trust that when this person says the power is off, it is actually off.[24]
    • Even if you trust this other person with your life, it is probably a good idea to double check and make sure the power is off for yourself. Never assume anything when dealing with electricity.[25]
  5. Call a professional for big jobs. Working with electricity is inherently dangerous and complicated. If you are not completely confident in your skills, bring in a trusted electrician to complete the job.[26]

[Edit]Preventing Electric Shock in a Lightning Storm

  1. Check the weather report. It may sound obvious, but making sure you have a clear forecast for your outdoor adventure is crucial to avoid getting caught in an electrical storm. Even if you're just gone for an afternoon, weather can change quickly and the best prevention is preparedness. Know the chance of a thunderstorm in the outdoor area you plan to visit, and plan to head in long before the lightning is due to start.
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 16.jpg
  2. Watch for signs of a coming storm. Pay attention to changes in temperature, increases in wind, or darkening of the sky. Listen for thunder. If it looks like a storm is rolling in, stop what you are doing and take shelter immediately.
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 17.jpg
  3. Find shelter. If you are outside and a storm approaches, quickly heading indoors is the only real way to be protected from lightning. Look for a completely enclosed shelter with its own electricity and plumbing, like a house or business. If that option is not available, hiding out in a car with the doors closed and windows up is also a safe bet. Covered picnic areas, stand-alone restroom facilities, tents, and other small structures will not keep you safe. No reliable shelter in sight? Reduce your risk with these preventive guidelines:
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 18.jpg
    • Stay low
    • Avoid open areas
    • Avoid metal and water
  4. Wait it out. Whether indoors or out, do not leave your chosen safety area for at least half an hour after the last clap of thunder is heard. If you have any doubts about whether or not the storm has passed, stay inside.
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 19.jpg

[Edit]Mitigating the Damage

  1. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Keep a fire extinguisher ready to go in areas where you work with electrical equipment. Fire extinguishers for use on electrical fires will have a "C," "BC," or "ABC" on the label.[27]
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 20.jpg
  2. Prepare for the worst. No matter how many precautions are in place, electric shock is always a risk when electricity is in use. If shock occurs, it is important to be prepared in order to handle the situation safely.[28]
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 21.jpg
  3. Call for help. In the case of an electric emergency, always call the Emergency Services. It is unwise to try to treat the victim yourself when an electrical shock has occurred.[29]
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 22.jpg
  4. Do not touch a victim of shock with bare hands. Shock victims usually don't hold the electricity in their bodies for very long. However, you must always use caution, as the victim could potentially still be conducting electricity. Use a non-conductive barrier, like rubber gloves, if at all possible, to touch or move the victim.[30]
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 23.jpg
  5. Turn off the power source, if possible. If you can do so without being shocked yourself, turn off the power. If this is not possible, move the victim away from the source with a non-conductive material, like a piece of wood.[31]
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 24.jpg
    • You should only try to move an electrical shock victim if the person is in immediate danger.[32]
  6. Check for vitals. Once you are certain the victim is no longer conducting electricity, check to see if the person is breathing. If the victim is not breathing, begin CPR immediately while someone else alerts emergency medical services.[33]
    Prevent Electrical Shock Step 25.jpg
    • OSHA's safety rules for working around electricity state that you have about 4 minutes to get help for an electric shock victim, so move quickly.[34]
  7. Wait for medical help to arrive. Stay calm and keep the victim lying horizontally, with his legs slightly elevated until medical help can arrive. Once help arrives, stay out of the paramedics' way. If the paramedics ask for any assistance, follow their instructions.[35]
