Sony Director Unboxes and Tears Down PlayStation 4 Console in Detailed Video

New product releases are almost always shrouded in mystery, as if sharing details about a particular electronic device will upset some unseen force and cause the planet to implode. We understand a company wanting to protect its IP, but firms often go way overboard with secrecy, refusing to share even the simplest of details. Sony has been guilty of this on occasion, but not today. What started off as an unboxing video by Sony director Yasuhiro Ootori turned into a full blown autopsy of the PlayStation 4.

Big time props go out to the crew at Wired.com for making the trek to Sony's headquarters in Tokyo and sharing a pair of videos giving a detailed teardown (and explanation) of the company's unreleased game console. What makes the teardown video so unique is that hardly anyone outside of Sony's tight circle of PS4 engineers has ever seen the inside of the console, and now the entire world gets to see it taken apart.

It's the first teardown of the PS4 and there's an interpreter on hand to translate Ootori's commentary into English. While you're watching the video, you can't help but feel like it's something you're not supposed to see, not yet anyway, and certainly not from Sony in this kind of detail, yet there it is.

The Rampage IV Black Edition is based on Intel's X79 Express chipset and comes loaded with features aimed at gamers and overclockers alike, and from the pictures we've seen, it looks pretty sweet to boot. It's also a pricey piece of silicon at $500, though Asus softens the blow somewhat by including a free copy of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

On the software side, Asus includes an OC Panel for real-time system monitoring, tuning, and one-click CPU Level Up overclocking.

Internet Explorer 11 Now Available to Download on Windows 7

Microsoft on Thursday announced that Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) is available to download on Windows 7 systems worldwide in 95 languages. The final version of IE11 was first released to Windows 8.1 on October 17, though a Preview version has been available to download from Microsoft since back in June. The final build that's now available to Windows 7 users offers the same improved performance, security, privacy, and reliability that consumers enjoy on Windows 8.1, Microsoft says.

Some of the performance benefits on Windows 7 include faster page loading, faster interactivity, and faster JavaScript performance, along with reduced CPU usage and improved battery life (on mobile devices). If you want to test out the browser's hardware accelerated rendering performance, one place to do that is on Microsoft's IE Test Drive site.

On Windows 7, Microsoft claims IE11 is 9 percent faster than IE10 in JavaScript performance, which itself is "nearly 30 percent faster than the nearst competitive browser."

If you're anxious to make the jump, you can download IE11 manually. Otherwise, Microsoft said it will begin automatically updating Windows 7 customers to IE11 in the weeks ahead, starting today with customers running IE11 Developer and Release Previews.

OCZ Taps 19nm NAND Flash Memory Process for Vector 150 SSD Series

You may recall that several years back, OCZ gave up its DRAM memory business so that it could focus more of its attention on solid state drives (SSDs). Since then, OCZ has launched several different models, though no other SATA III SSD line in the company's portfolio is rated as fast as its newly announced Vector 150 Series. The latest 19nm NAND flash process geometry and an in-house controller design are what power these new drives.

The Vector 150 Series is available in 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB capacities with ultra-slim 7mm alloy housing. All three feature OCZ's proprietary Barefoot 3 controller and offer up to 550MB/s read bandwidth and up to 530MB/s write bandwidth, along with 4K random reads of up to 100,000 IOPS, 4K random writes of up to 95,000 IOPS, and sustained 4K random write performance of up to 26,000 IOPS.

"Our Barefoot 3 architecture continues to leverage leading-edge controller technologies to deliver our highest performing SSDs to date enabling computing users with faster file transfers and boot-ups, as well as a quicker, more responsive overall storage experience," said Ralph Schmitt, CEO for OCZ Technology. The drives come with a 3.5-inch desktop adapter bracket and Acronis True Image cloning software. Unfortunately, OCZ didn't reveal pricing or when these SSDs will be available.

Microsoft Finds Its Way Back to PC Gaming, Plans to Launch Several First Party Titles

Gaming has long been a driving force on the PC, though sometimes it's easy to forget when companies put so much focus on dedicated consoles. Even Microsoft is guilty of turning its back on the PC gamer to some extent. Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer admitted as much, saying he and his company "lost our way a bit in supporting Windows games," but that's in the past. Looking ahead, Spencer and company have found renewed interest in PC gaming.

"You'll see us doing more stuff on Windows. We probably have more individual projects on Windows than we've had in ten years at Microsoft Studios," Spencer told ShackNews at an event previewing the Xbox One.

Spencer went on to say that these aren't casual or lightweight titles he and his team are working on, either. Microsoft already covered those grounds when Windows 8 launched. Out of the 30 games available in the Windows Store during launch, most were casual titles.

"We've covered all of that property now. Now we're starting to look at bigger and core gamer things," Spencer said. "I'm excited about that."

So are we, provided this doesn't turn out to be lip service.

Apple Bullies Popular iPhone, iPad Inventory Tracker Sites into Shutting Down

Apple devices are incredibly popular and it's not unusual for there to be a shortage of whatever new gadget just came out. Coming soon, the hot new item Apple will be pimping is a new iPad mini with Retina display. There have been plenty of rumors leading up to the 2nd generation iPad mini's launch suggesting Retina panels for the device are in relatively short supply, which might explain why Apple is suddenly interested in shutting down inventory tracker websites.

Apple-Tracker.com's founder Mordy Tikotzky claims he received a DMCA takedown notice from Apple's legal department saying that his website, along with iPhone-check.com, are operating in violation of Apple's Internet Service Terms of Use. Tikotzky's websites scraped Apple's retail store sites to determine how much inventory was available.

"I have a good faith belief that the the website identified by URL below is unlawful because, among other things, the page scrapes and collects data from Apple.com in violation of the Apple.com Internet Service Terms of Use," Apple's attorney stated in the notice.

Tikotzky expressed regret for having to turn off his websites, adding that he's "not really interested in picking a fight with Apple." It's an unfortunate turn of events for consumers who, prior to the takedowns, could input their ZIP code and find out whether a particular product was in stock locally.

In subsequent Twitter posts, Tikotzky said he released the source code for his websites and tracking tool. While Apple may have successfully shuttered the original tracking sites, it's only a matter of time before copycat sites pop up, giving the company's legal department plenty to keep busy with.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti Benchmarks

GTX 780 TiWith the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, Nvidia has snatched the single-GPU performance crown back from the clutches of the recently launched Radeon R9 290X, and not just by a small margin either, but by a landslide. By dethroning the R9 290X Nvidia has also taken the GTX Titan to the woodshed as well, as the GTX 780 Ti is far and away the fastest single GPU we have ever tested. Read on to see how it fares against the GTX 780, the R9 290X, and the former champ, the GTX Titan.

The Real Big Kepler

Back when the GTX Titan launched we all proclaimed it to be "Big Kepler," or the full implementation of the Kepler architecture instead of the half-Kepler GK104 we got with the GTX 680. Of course, we all loved the GTX 680 at the time, but it was roughly half the size of the GK110 chip Nvidia had deployed to supercomputers worldwide. When Nvidia finally got around to stuffing the GK110 into a gaming GPU named Titan, we all rejoiced since we had finally acquired the real-deal Holyfield Big Kepler GPU.

However, even the Titan wasn't a full GK110 part, as it had one of its SMX units disabled. This begged the question - would Nvidia ever release a Titan Ultra with all SMX units intact? With the GTX 780 Ti we finally have that card. Not only does it have all 15 SMX units enabled, this bad mutha also has the fastest memory available on an Nvidia GPU with its 3GB of 7GHz GDDR5 RAM. Previously, this speed of memory was only found on the mid-range GTX 770. The bottom line is Nvidia is pulling out all the stops with the GTX 780 Ti in an effort to shame the R9 290X, and once again establish itself as the king of the single-GPU space. It should be noted that the GTX 780 Ti does not offer Double Precision compute performance like the GTX Titan, so CUDA developers will still prefer that card. The GTX 780 Ti is made for gamers, not scientists. We should also point out that the GTX 780 Ti supports quad-SLI, just like the GTX Titan, and the GTX 780 does not.

GTX 780 Ti Specs

Let's have a look at the specs of the GTX 780 Ti along with its closest competitors.

*The R9 290X's TDP isn't a quoted spec from AMD but rather one with air quotes around it. We believe it to be a bit higher than 250w.

On paper it's clear the GTX 780 Ti has a higher specification than either of its competitors, not to mention the obvious GTX 780. Although its memory bus isn't as wide as the R9 290X's, it has faster memory, so it's able to achieve higher overall memory bandwidth. The R9 290X is capable of pushing 320GB/s thanks to its slower 5GHz memory but wider 512-bit channel, while the GTX 780's faster 7GHz memory can squeeze 336GB/s through its narrower 384-bit bus. The GTX 780 Ti has more processing cores as well, and thanks to Kepler's higher level of efficiency compared to AMD's GCN architecture, is able to sustain much higher clock rates at all times as well. All that adds up to one ass-kicking GPU, as we'll see shortly. Like the GTX 780 the card measures 10.5 inches in length, and requires a six-pin and an eight-pin power connector. TDP is unchanged at 250w.

What's New Compared to the GTX 780

GTX 780 Ti

Since this board carries the GTX 780 moniker, let's look at how it is different from the GTX 780, because remember, this card costs $200 more than the original GTX 780 now that Nvidia has lowered its price. First up, it has 25 percent more CUDA cores, going from 2,304 to 2,880, which is quite a jump. Second, it has faster GDDR5 memory, which has been bumped up a full 1GHz to 7GHz. Third, it has a new feature Nvidia calls Max OC that simply balances the power going to the card from its three sources: the six-pin and eight-pin rails, and the PCI Express bus. Nvidia claims the board usually does this on its own quite well, but when overclocking all bets are off and not enough power from one source could limit the overclock. It claims this situation is rectified on the GTX 780 Ti, so you should be able to overclock this board higher than you could a GTX Titan or GTX 780. Finally, though it's not a new feature, this card also supports GPU Boost 2.0, like the other cards in the 700 series. However, with the arrival of the variable clock rate Radeon R9 290X, Nvidia is pointing out that it guarantees a base level of performance on all its 700 series cards, regardless of operating conditions. This is in contrast to the new Hawaii boards from AMD, which state a "max clock speed" but not what the actual average clock speed is under load as it tends to be a bit lower. We'll have more on that a bit later.

G-Sync

One of the most interesting features Nvidia has announced recently for its Kepler GPUs is G-Sync, which is technology built into upcoming LCDs that enable it to work hand-in-hand with the Kepler GPU to sync refresh rate and frames coming out of the GPU. It's essentially the end of V-sync as we know it, and since most hardcore gamers never use V-sync we couldn't be more thrilled about this technology. By syncing the monitor's refresh rate with the actual framerate coming out of the GPU, tearing and sheering is totally eliminated, resulting in a much smoother visual experience on-screen. There are some caveats, of course. First, we have not tested or witnessed G-Sync in action in our own lab, and have only seen an Nvidia-prepared demo of the tech, but what we've seen so far looks very good, and we have no reason to doubt it won't fulfill its promises once it lands in the lab.

Nvidia G-Sync

In order to experience Nvidia's G-Sync technology you'll need a G-Sync LCD. The first one from Asus is a $400 24" model.

However, since we haven't seen it yet as the monitors are not yet available, we'll have to wait to deliver a verdict on this particular piece of gear. Second, in order to acquire this technology you will have to first acquire a G-Sync display, or buy an actual PCB and mod your monitor somehow. We're not sure how that would work, and what monitors will allow it, so again, we'll have to wait and see. We don't believe most gamers will want to buy a new LCD just to get this technology, however. Still, kudos to Nvidia for taking on a problem that has existed for as long as we can remember. If it really is as good as John Carmack and Tim Sweeney say it is, it could revolutionize the gaming industry. We'll have to wait and see.

ShadowPlay is more efficient than FRAPs, and doesn't consume your entire hard drive either.

We covered this technology at the GTX Titan launch, and back then it was "coming soon." Now that it's finally out, though still in beta, this is technology exclusive to Nvidia that should factor into one's purchasing decision. Since we've already covered it, in brief it lets you capture gaming footage with almost no performance penalty, according to Nvidia. Once captured the onboard H.264 encoder built into the Kepler architecture compresses it to reduce file size, and it works in the background always recording what you last did in the game, hence its name. We have been playing with it in the lab, so expect a writeup on our experience with it shortly.

Heat, Power, and Overclocking

We'll cover the R9 290X "Golden Sample" controversy below, but for now let's focus on the GTX 780 Ti. Like all Kepler cards it runs very cool, and very quiet. Even with its extra cores and faster RAM it is typical to see it hit about 82C under load, and at that temperature it was barely audible in testing. This is the exact same experience we had with the GTX 780 before it, and the GTX Titan as well. These cards run very quiet, and never get too hot. And now that the R9 290X is out, the Nvidia cards seem downright chilly by comparison.

As far as overclocking is concerned, we've always had a very easy time overclocking Kepler boards, and the GTX 780 Ti was no different. Though Nvidia claims this board overclocks better than the GTX 780 and GTX Titan thanks to its load-balancing tech, we didn't experience that. Instead we achieved results which were just a tad bit lower than what we experienced with boards like the Asus GTX 780 DC2 and EVGA GTX 780 ACX. Overall we were able to hit 1,225MHz boost clock with a 250MHz memory overclock, which is pretty damn good. When overclocked the board hit 85C and had its fan spinning at 67 percent, though it was quieter than the R9 290X fan at 49 percent. Keep in mind we were unable to overclock the Radeon R9 290X since out of the box in its default "quiet" mode it hits 94C quite easily, leaving no headroom for overclocking. Sure, the R9 290X is already running at or around 1,000MHz during normal operation, which is higher than the stated Boost clock for the GTX 780 Ti, but in reality the R9 290X's typical clock speed is more around 950MHz or so. Nvidia would say it's actually around 800MHz, but more on that later.

Our default resolution for cards of this stature is 2560x1600 with 4XAA enabled, and all details fully maxed out. We play with everything turned up as high as possible, because, well, this is Maximum PC you are reading. Let's examine the numbers:

Best scores are bolded. Our test bed is a 3.33GHz Core i7 3960X Extreme Edition in an Asus Rampage IV Extreme motherboard with 16GB of DDR3/1600 and a Thermaltake ToughPower 1,050W PSU. The OS is 64-bit Windows 8. All games are run at max everything at 2560x1600 with 4X AA except for the 3DMark tests.

Now then, with the numbers in front of us we can begin to explore the complicated question of where these three cards stand in the current leader boards. We are just kidding, of course, because one look at this chart and one thing is immediately clear. The GTX 780 Ti kicks the crap out of everything, by a lot. We're used to seeing a few frames per second difference between one card and another when comparing cards of the same generation, but the GTX 780 Ti is just in a league all by itself. Nothing else even comes close, not even the mighty Titan, which costs $300 more. Of course, the R9 290X costs $150 less, so there's that to consider, but the end result from these tests is one simple statement -- Nvidia makes the fastest single GPU in the world, period. Unless AMD has a new piece of silicon that is even faster than Hawaii up its sleeve, which would be pretty amazing if it were true, it will be handing the fastest GPU crown back to Nvidia for the time being. We imagine Nvidia will hold onto this title for awhile now too, as AMD can't push the R9 290X any further than it already has. We suppose a water-cooled R9 290X or super-air-cooled version could boost performance a bit, but the best AMD could hope for would be to match Nvidia's card. We doubt it will be able to beat it any time soon.

4K Benchmarks

With a card this powerful, you can certainly run most of the latest games at 4K resolution. And if you have the type of cash to spring for a $700 GPU, you might have the $5k or so required to land one of these sexy LCDs on your desk. Our hats are off to you, rich PC gamer, as gaming in 4K is truly breathtaking. Okay, here are the numbers:

The OS is 64-bit Windows 8. All games are run at 3840x2160 with max everything, AA turned off. We do not have scores for the GTX 780 with Batman as we ran out of time to test it, but will update this chart ASAP.

At 4K the GTX 780 performs quite well but not as well as the more expensive Titan, and it also performed slightly worse in Battlefield 3 than the R9 290X. That said, the reviews of the R9 290X and the R9 290 generally showed the AMD cards performing better than their Nvidia counterparts at 4K. As we stated in our review of the R9 290X, AMD sent us a 4K panel in order to highlight this advantage it had over Nvidia, presumably due to their card having higher memory bandwidth and more memory too. However, with the GTX 780 Ti that advantage has largely been wiped out. However, it's worth keeping in mind that the $550 R9 290X performed quite well at 4K against its more expensive competition from Nvidia, so in a way it still holds a slight advantage, at least at this resolution. That's not worth very much in the real world though, as we can't imagine many people are gaming at 4K yet. It's just too expensive at this time, though it's amazing that a single GPU can run the latest games at decent frame rates at this resolution. We are truly living in an amazing time given all the GPU power at our disposal.

A Final Note on Heat, Noise, and Performance

A lot of ink has been spilled this week, at least digitally, on the heat, noise, and power consumption of the card that dethroned the GTX 780, the Radeon R9 290X. The reason for all the hub bub is two fold. First, AMD doesn't state a base clock for this GPU like it has done with previous cards. Instead, it states a "maximum clock speed" that the card could reach given enough thermal headroom. Once it reaches the thermal limit, which is exactly 94C on the R9 290X, it begins to throttle the clock speeds a bit to keep temperatures in check. When clock speeds go down, so does performance. Now, if clock speeds just go down a tiny bit, like 50MHz, performance won't suffer that much. However, Nvidia claims that when the R9 290X is set to its default "quiet" mode that clock speeds can go as low as 700MHz, and then stay in that neighborhood until the card cools down, resulting in reduced overall performance.

In our testing we did not experience a radical decline in clock speeds on the R9 290X. Sure, it fluctuates but generally stays above 900MHz. We even ran some tests to see how much our R9 290X press board would fluctuate, so we let the card get up to 94C and then ran Heaven 4.0 and recorded a score of 33.4 frames per second (we know the chart above shows 36fps). We then let the R9 290X run overnight, which was approximately 16 hours, in order to ensure the card was hot as Hades. We then ran the Heaven 4.0 test again, and the score was 33.6 frames per second, so it did not change over time despite being as hot as possible. We also examined the bar graph showing clock speed changes over that time period, and though there were small dips, it was still pretty consistent. These tests were performed with the card in its stock mode, which is "quiet" as the fan never goes above 40 percent. It's in this mode that you will see the most clock speed fluctuation, as in "Uber" mode with the fan running at about 50 percent, there is very little fluctuation since the card's temps are more under control.

Here's the rub: Even though the card provided to us by AMD didn't exhibit drastic clock speed fluctuation, other news outlets are reporting that retail boards acquired through e-tailers are showing major fluctuations. This would indicate that the board provided to the press were "golden samples," or boards tested or configured to not exhibit the same behavior seen in retail boards. This is obviously a problem, for several reasons. The boards we receive should be *exactly* the same as retail boards, period. But in this instance something is amiss, either with the press boards or with the retail boards, at least according to sites like the Tech Report and Tom's Hardware. AMD says the problem lies with the retail boards, and it's working on a driver fix that will "minimize this variance" according to the statement provided to the Tech Report. For what it's worth, a site in Sweden also obtained retail R9 290X boards and found the benchmark scores to be identical to those of the press board. We will be obtaining a retail R9 290X and will post our test results soon.

To Nvidia's credit, it specs its boards with a Base Clock that is guaranteed, and performance can only go up from there if you overclock. AMD, at least this time around, is doing the opposite by stating the maximum clock speed the card can achieve in ideal conditions, with performance only dropping from there. How much it drops is an area of debate currently, but just to be clear, in our testing we did not experience the drastic clock speed fluctuations reported in the retail cards, and by Nvidia. Even in our overnight test of the R9 290X we did not see a drop in performance.

Final Thoughts

With the release of the GTX 780 Ti Nvidia lays claim to the fastest single GPU in the world title once again. We haven't seen a card dominate the high-end proceedings like this in a while, probably since the GTX Titan was released actually. Not only is it fast, but like the other Kepler cards it's cool and quiet, two traits that have gained new appreciation this week as gamers consider the new Hawaii cards from AMD. Both of those cards represent very strong price-to-performance ratios, but neither of them run hot, and are noticeably louder than their Nvidia equivalents. We don't think the heat and noise are deal breakers, however.

Naturally, the GTX 780 Ti costs significantly more than the R9 290X, so we would expect it to outperform it by the same amount, and it certainly does. Barring some unforeseen new GPU from AMD it seems like Nvidia will remain the uncontested fastest GPU provider for the near future, at least until its new Maxwell cards come online sometime in 2014.

Lifting the veil on Age of Wushu's marriage system
Many people consider a wedding day to be a big deal, and Age of Wushu's upcoming marriage system provides a good helping of pomp and circumstance to accompany player nuptials. When the Ultimate Scrolls expansion hits next week, players will be able to tie the knot in an elaborate in-game ceremony that includes a a parade through the city, a banquet (that friends can attend and foes crash), and a dance show provided by the new couple.

For those who don't yet have a companion, the marriage system has you covered: Unattached characters can register with the Matchmaker in hopes of finding a suitable suitor. Once you find your match, male characters have to do the proposing by offering a betrothal gift (a self-determined amount of Taels) that, if accepted, starts the whole process rolling. Men, have your money pouches ready because you also have to spring for the wedding package! World of Warcraft sheds another 100,000 subscriptions

Many revelations ahead, one may think.
Everyone is pretty certain that the next World of Warcraft expansion is going to be announced very soon. Tomorrow, probably. So it serves as an interesting counterpoint to note that the game has lost 100,000 subscribers over the past three months, dropping the game's total to 7.6 million subscribers and serving as a rather inelegant coda to the game's most recent expansion, Mists of Pandaria. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick stated the numbers during a post-earnings call while noting that "new and exciting content" was on the way for the game.

While 7.6 million subscribers is still more than enough to make hats out of money, it's a far cry from the game's subscription height. It remains to be seen whether or not the next expansion will help launch the game back upward or not, whether the game is currently undergoing a slump, or is simply beginning to decline.

Blizzard's collectible card game, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, has an arena mode that allows players to draft a deck out of a random assortment of cards. That deck is then pitted against other arena players to decide who is the glorious victor and who cries in his coffee. You can continue playing with your arena deck until you claw your way to nine wins or suffer three losses, whichever comes first. Prizes, including unopened decks, golden cards, gold, and crafting dust, are then awarded based on your arena record.

    Yes, this game promising your favorite characters will have those popular characters after all!
    It's not even time for Blizzard's convention, but a revelation has already surfaced for those rabidly following the upcoming Heroes of the Storm. The first key artwork of the game has been released via Twitter, so anyone who was worried that the game would not feature a variety of characters from Blizzard's popular franchises can now rest easier. And if you're not a fan of Blizzard, you can start speculating whether this game will settle the eternal battle between Scary Black Armor Guy and Futuristic Space Marine With A Lady On His Shoulder.

    Those of you who are fans will recognize several staples from various games, including Illidan, Sylvanas, and the Lich King from World of Warcraft alongside Tychus Findlay and Lady Never-Actually-Appearing-In-Her-Own-Game (better known as Nova) from StarCraft II. it remains to be seen whether we'll hear more about the game when BlizzCon kicks off, but under the circumstances, it seems likely.

      Regardless of your feelings toward Kickstarter or crowdfunding in general, you have to admit that it's starting to have an impact on the way games are made. More specifically, two of the larger crowdfunding projects -- Shroud of the Avatar and Star Citizen -- are doing away with a traditional launch date in favor of a staggered release schedule.

      Star Citizen has already released a playable piece of pre-alpha content, and just yesterday we learned that Shroud of the Avatar's initial client will be available as early as next month.

        October was a pretty big month. I don't mean that just because it was a month filled with all of the classic horror you could ever hope for, although that was certainly welcome. But October also saw two big superhero games ramping up and doing things in a big way, one for a console launch and one for a big fan-pleasing rally... which was pretty cool to see, all around.

        That's not to say that the other superhero games available sat around and did nothing during October, but you couldn't match the energy surrounding City of Titans and DC Universe Online. Let's look back at the past month of capes and cowls.

            Jagex upgrades RuneScape infrastructure after DDoS attacksIf you've been experiencing disconnections or prolonged lag while trying to play RuneScape lately, it's probably not just you. Service disruptions have been ongoing for "over a year now," according to a post on the game's official website.

            Jagex and its browser-based fantasy title have been "the target of numerous DDoS attacks," CEO Mark Gerhard writes. The motives "tie closely with removal of bots and gold farming," Gerhard says, before explaining that Jagex has just "made a multi-million pound investment" in IT infrastructure upgrades and is also working with global law enforcement "to bring the people responsible for these attacks to justice."

            Choose My Adventure: Week four
            At your bidding, I took my first foray into the Neverwinter Foundry this weekend, and it wasn't too shabby. The Book of the Dead by Magic88255 captured the melodrama of a classic supernatural horror film and coupled it with a bit of game combat. But I think the most important thing that The Book of the Dead had to teach us was about triggers and transitions. When we eventually make our own Choose My Adventure Foundry quest, we will want to keep that sort of thing in mind. Although the overarching storyline is important, I think the little things are what differentiates good Foundry quests from the great ones.

            During my livestream on Sunday, I tackled another Foundry quest to get a feel for other possibilities. I completed the runner-up from last week, Valerie's Dream. Although the storytelling was a bit weaker in this quest, the character development was great.

            Both quests were fun, so examining the quest beyond just the fun-factor amazes me. I am actually astonished overall at the quality of quests being created in the Foundry. I hope I can live up to that when we create our own. Let's take a look at some of the elements that seem to make for a good Neverwinter Foundry quest.

              If you're looking for a master class in crowd-funded game development, who better to teach it than the man responsible for the most successful crowdfunding project of all time? Star Citizen guru Chris Roberts took the stage at this week's GDC Next to share insights from year one of his space sim sandbox renaissance.

              "It's not just about raising money," Roberts explained. "This is the mistake I see a lot of other campaigns make. The best thing about crowdfunding is that you get to build your community early."

              He said that the keys for Cloud Imperium's runaway success were building and managing its own fundraising apparatus on its own website as well as involving players in as much of the development process as possible. "There's the game that people are going to be playing, and the one they'll have watching the game get built. The dream is the final game, but the journey is a lot of fun," he said.

                DDO Update 20 does vampires and robots in equal measure
                With two Forgotten Realms-themed expansions under its belt, Dungeons and Dragons Online might look like a game that's focused on this popular setting while sweeping its "other" world of Eberron under the rug. However, Update 20 shows that Turbine has love for both worlds and the playerbase spread across them.

                DDO's Update 20 has three important features on the docket: an Eberron dungeon, a Forgotten Realms dungeon, and changes to the reincarnation system and enhancement tree. This looks to be a good update for the thrifty subset, as all of its content is coming to the community free of charge.

                This update's coming next Tuesday, November 12th, so forge ahead and prepare yourself for the adventures to come.

                  Hi-Rez Studios' SMITE already has a formidable roster of gods and goddesses from around the world, but the devs have just revealed yet another addition: Ah Muzen Cab, Mayan god of -- get this -- bees. That's right, SMITE has officially introduced the single most terrifying entity to ever exist outside the realm of Lovecraftian horror.

                  Ah Muzen Cab seems to fill the role of a ranged support class, and he has a number of abilities that make it easier for his teammates to bring death to the enemy. His passive ability, named simply "Bees," causes enemies hit by some of his abilities to be harassed by bees, which deal damage over time and reveal affected enemies' locations on the minimap. He can also place beehives, which grant Ah Muzen Cab healing over time plus buffs to movement and attack speed while near a hive.                   Shroud of the Avatar's Release 1 due this December
                  If you're chomping at the bit to play an early version of Richard Garriott's new Shroud of the Avatar opus, you won't have to wait much longer. Executive producer Starr Long posted a schedule of sorts on the game's forum earlier today, and the initial testing phase -- dubbed Release 1 -- begins on December 12th.

                  Like fellow crowdfunding project Star Citizen, Shroud of the Avatar is rolling out in stages rather than sticking with a more traditional "it's done" launch date. Long's post outlines the tentative schedule through March of 2014, and there's a good amount of detail in terms of what playable features are expected. Hit up the links below to learn more.

                  Wargaming founds mobile game studio
                  It seems as though the Wargaming empire is expanding its reach, as the company recently founded a new mobile game studio in Seattle.

                  The studio, which currently lacks a public name, is headed up by mobile game vet David Bluhm. Wargaming is giving the start-up freedom to choose its own direction and business strategy while providing it with its funding, global marketing, and distribution. This studio is separate from Wargaming Seattle (formerly Gas Powered Games).

                  Bluhm had a few words to say about his team's mission: "We think mobile games is still a relatively new space with massive upside. Mobile is ripe for innovative and new core game mechanics." He said that more information about the studio's upcoming titles will be revealed soon.

                  38 Studios asset auction may be delayed due to high demand

                  Ironically, there's more news about Copernicus now that it's gone than there was beforehand.
                  When companies die, their assets are sold to make back whatever money can be recovered. That's normal. But you wouldn't expect a great deal of interest in the intellectual property of a company that had worked on only two games and actually released just one of them. Apparently that expectation would be wrong; Richard Land, the attorney in charge of selling off 38 Studios' holdings, has requested that the IP auction be delayed due to greater interest than expected.

                  For those of you who had forgotten the details, here's a recap: The sale of these assets are part of an attempt by the state of Rhode Island to recover some of the enormous losses when 38 Studios went bankrupt following a $75 million loan from the state. The auction was originally scheduled to take place November 13th to the 14th. What parties are interested in the IP remains to be seen, as do the offers that have supposedly been put on the table.

                  Newest producer's letter discusses the next major Allods Online update

                  The wind doesn't usually change stuff so much as moving it, but we'll let it slide.
                  Allods Online is the first game that launched free-to-play and then launched a subscription server. How did that go? According to the latest producer's letter, it went. Not perfectly, and it's not as popular as the option to play the game for free, but it serves different customer types. But that's just the smallest hint of the changes coming to the game, which could include a merge for the American and European regions in the future.

                  The game's next major update, appropriately titled Winds of Change, is currently in the works. It promises to bring new features such as an asymmetrical 6v24 PvP challenge. The small team will be tasked with infiltrating a large facility and retrieving the flag deep within, leading to a different approach than the usual clash of armies. New mounts, new class features, and more are due along with the update, which should go live in early December.

                  Neverwinter sheds light on Dread Ring zone
                  The Neverwinter community is buzzing over the upcoming Shadowmantle module, and today Cryptic is giving us a closer look at one of its core features: the Dread Ring campaign.

                  The Dread Ring is a new zone in which Valindra Shadowmantle and her motley crew are attempting to resurrect a mighty dragon in order to make it the world's biggest dracolich. The zone has many significant landmarks amidst the bones of this long-dead dragon, but Valindra's Tower, an epic dungeon, will be the one everyone will be eying.

                  The dev diary gives some of the lore behind the region, but of course all preservationist players have skipped past that to see which rewards might be worth the risk. Cryptic assures us that these will be "more plentiful and more powerful" than anything seen to date.

                  The studio is also tweaking its daily quest system, promising more variety in the themes, instances, and rewards that it offers.

                  Warriors don't look at explosions.
                  In every game, there has to be at least one class that focuses entirely upon hitting something really hard until it stops moving, then hitting it a few more times. That's WildStar's Warrior at a glance. And no, there's really not a whole lot more to the class than that; what you see is what you get. But what you see is also a monstrously powerful technological hitting machine in heavy armor with a power sword, arm cannon, and the strength to just kick things into place when needed.

                  No, the Warrior doesn't master magic or the like. The Warrior just has a versatile toolbox, and several tools that are very good at allowing the Warrior to survive a beating before delivering one of his own. Don't take our word for it -- check out the newest DevSpeak video past the break and watch the Warrior do his thing. It's all just smashing stuff, but it's smashing with panache.

Valiance is heavy on additions and updates to the raid systems, including the addition of nearly 80 new level 88-98 raid bosses, updated drop lists for Dragon Raid bosses, a new raid boss summoning system, and a new Adena distribution system for after the raids. The open field raid bosses have also gotten a revamp, as has the raid point ranking system. Did you miss Beleth, Darion, Lilith, and Anakim? Players will be able to once again face these four returning raid bosses. And on top of all that, The Seed of Destruction and Infinity hunting grounds in Gracia have been revamped and changed to instance zones.

                  But wait, there's more! You can head into these new battles in style with a new hairstyle from the beauty shop. Then, when all your slaughtering is done, you can kick back in a new clan hall or relax with the revamped fishing system. Get a peek at all these changes in the gallery below.

                    RIFT launches update 2.5, Song of Dreams

                    The song of his people is probably not 'Under the Sea'.
                    A major patch is always a good thing for a game. And Song of Dreams, or RIFT patch 2.5 for the more numerically inclined in the audience, qualifies as a major patch any way you slice it. It starts off with a mini-saga sending players under the seas at the Ember Isle, forcing players to take part in new underwater combat to learn the mystery of why various expeditions are disappearing.

                    Still, there's a lot more in this patch. The level requirements on Iron Pine Peak have been relaxed, spreading the zone from level 27 to 35 for a wider band of adventurers. New Planar Attunement Nexuses are available for players with plenty of points and a decided lack of places to spend them. And this is all just the start of the patch's content, which will be slowly expanded over the course of the next month.                     WAR. WAR was never this epic.
                    Sigh. Warhammer Online. It's hard to believe the title is over five years old, but sadly it's not hard to believe that its days are numbered. The powers-that-be have opened the free-to-play floodgates for the last few weeks of the game's life, and while I haven't felt the urge to log in yet and run around for old times' sake, I may get there before the end.
