North Korea Says It Has Successfully Tested A Submarine-Launched Missile

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 09:56 PM PDT

Asia Times: North Korea tests submarine-launched missile: Seoul

Test firing comes ahead of long-delayed denuclearization talks with the United States.

Just as long-delayed talks with the United States were set for the end of this week, North Korea test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile, or SLBM, on Wednesday morning.

The missile was fired from a position off the country's East Coast near Wonsan at 7:11am on Wednesday and flew approximately 450 kilometers at an altitude of about 910km, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

South Korea's presidential National Security Council convened an emergency meeting, Yonhap added.

Could The U.S. And North Korea Become Allies Against China?

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 09:38 PM PDT

Reuters

David Jonathan Wolff and William R. McKinney, National Interest: Imagine This: North Korea and America Becoming Allies Against China

Two scholars make the case of how this could happen.

For the first time since the Korean War, reduced tensions on the Korean Peninsula have presented a real opportunity to resolve North Korean issues by focusing on converging security concerns increasingly shared by the Republic of Korea (ROK), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and the United States (US) about the rise of the People's Republic of China (PRC). That new reality portends a security realignment far different from that of today and invites a game-changing reassessment of US security roles and responsibilities in the region.

Seth J. Frantzman, National Interest: Can ISIS Make a Comeback?

Eradicating the Islamic State in Iraq is a top regional priority, and Washington needs to help finish the job.

U.S. forces in northern Iraq, working with partners on the ground, are confident that the remnants of the Islamic State can be confronted, two years after ISIS lost the last pockets of land it held. It has been five years since Washington committed forces to Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve. Today, operating with a relatively small footprint across central and northern Iraq, the operation is continuing but there are questions on the ground about what comes next and whether an ISIS resurgence is in the works.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq deployed counter-terrorism troops in the southern city of Nassiriya on Wednesday after police "lost control" when gunfights broke out between protesters and security forces, police sources said.

Curfews were later imposed in Nassiriya and two other southern cities, Amara and Hilla, the police sources told Reuters, as protests that began on Tuesday over unemployment, corruption and poor public services increased.

The elite counter-terrorism service was also deployed to Baghdad airport where its men fired live ammunition and tear gas at protesters, preventing them from storming Baghdad airport.

Reports of curfews in southern cities and nationwide internet access largely cut off as anti-gov't rallies turn violent.

At least three protesters and one policeman have been killed in Iraq's southern city of Nasiriya, according to a monitoring group, after nationwide anti-government protests devolved into violence that saw security forces fire live rounds and tear gas for a second straight day.

The deaths on Wednesday came a day after at least two protesters - one in the capital, Baghdad, and one in Nasiriya - were killed and hundreds of people were wounded in clashes between police and protesters angry at unemployment, corruption and poor public services.

In a letter to the European commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, the prime minister said: "This government wants to get a deal, as I'm sure we all do. If we cannot reach one, it would represent a failure of statecraft for which we would all be responsible."

WWII B-17 'Flying Fortress' Bomber Has Crashed At Bradley Airport, Connecticut

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:45 PM PDT

Daily Mail: 'We need to land immediately': Pilot on WWII B-17 'Flying Fortress' bomber asked to land FIVE minutes after taking off before it crashed in a ball of fire, killing at least five people and injuring nine others at Bradley Airport during vintage air show

* The bomber plane crashed at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut on Wednesday morning killing at least five people, and injuring nine
* There were 13 people on the plane - 10 passengers, two pilots and one attendant
* Another person on the ground was injured when the plane tried to land
* The pilots on board the plane reported problems with the plane just five minutes after take-off and requested to land
* The B-17 was performing what are called 'heritage flights,' in which people fly in a historical airplane, according to workers at the airport
* The plane, dubbed 'Nine-O-Nine' was built in 1945, and was used for nuclear testing before being rebuilt as a 'fire bomber' to douse forest fires
* It survived a 1987 crash, and after being rebuilt again, was used in vintage air shows where it completed 1200 'tour duties'

At least five people have died after a World War II-era bomber plane crashed and burst into flames shortly after take-off at Connecticut's Bradley International Airport.

The B-17G Flying Fortress plane, dubbed 'Nine-o-Nine', went down on Wednesday morning just outside Hartford when it was trying to land on the runway.

State Police Commissioner confirmed there were fatalities. He added: 'Victims are very difficult to identify, we don't want to make a mistake.'

Sources told the Hartford Courant that at least five people were dead.

Ukrainian Nationalists Protest Against President Zelensky's Election Deal With Eastern Separatists

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 01:39 PM PDT

Ukrainian nationalists burn flares and hold a banner reading "No to capitulation" during their protest against the approval of so-called the Steinmeier Formula for elections in eastern Ukraine.

BBC: Ukraine conflict: Anger as Zelensky agrees vote deal in east

Hundreds of Ukrainians have protested after President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had backed an agreement that would bring elections to territory controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

Mr Zelensky came to power promising to end the five-year conflict in the east which has left 13,000 people dead.

Any vote would be under international standards and would not be held "under the barrel of a gun", he said.

Nationalists rallied in Kiev with banners demanding "no capitulation".

Large parts of Luhansk and Donetsk, in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, were seized by Russian-backed separatists in 2014 after Russia captured and annexed Ukraine's Crimea region.

Previous Post: Ukraine Has Reached an Agreement With Separatists In The East On Local Elections (October 1, 2019)

WNU Editor: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ran on a platform to end the war. He is now delivering. The opposition from Ukrainian nationalists is not a surprise. Because of the war a large segment of the Russian-Ukrainian population were disenfranchised from the Ukrainian electoral process. This deal is the first step to bring them back in. Russian-Ukrainians also represent a lot of votes, and for any politician who wants power he or she will need to accommodate Ukraine's Russian minority (about 25%). And you can take this to the bank. Russian Ukrainians are never going to vote for any Ukrainian nationalist party, and the nationalists know this. My prediction. Expect a lot of opposition in the coming weeks and months to scuttle this deal, but the momentum now is to find common ground and to end the war.

Update: My friends and contacts in Kyiv are telling me that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a major concession on autonomy that made the separatists agree to work with him to search for a peaceful resolution. Long time readers of this blog know that I have always said the following. The only way to end the conflict is Ukraine is to establish a federated state (like Canada or Switzerland) where the regions have jurisdiction on issues like culture and development. It is still too early to say where this is all heading, but it looks like this is the direction that President Volodymyr Zelensky has decided to follow.

Russian President Putin Says He Doesn't Mind If His Phone Calls With President Trump Are Made Public

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday backed away from statements made previously by Kremlin officials about his calls with President Trump, telling reporters that he would not object to transcripts being made public.

Multiple news outlets reported that Putin made the remarks after meeting with Iran's Hassan Rouhani, telling journalists that there was nothing on his calls with Trump that could compromise the U.S. president.

"My previous life taught me that any of my conversations may be published, and I always proceed from this," Putin said, referring to his past in Russia's intelligence service, according to Russian news site Sputnik.

Militants Attack Two Army Bases In Mali Killing 40 With Another 60 Missing

At least 40 people have been killed and 60 more are missing following an attack by extremists on two military camps in Mali, the country's government said. An al-Qaida-linked group is accused of being behind it.

The Mali government said on Tuesday that al-Qaida-affiliated groups attacked military bases in central Mali. At least 40 people have been killed in the attacks, with another 60 people missing. The government reported that 25 soldiers and 15 extremists were killed in the fighting.

The attacks took place at similar times at the military bases in Boulikessi and Mondoro on Monday.

This Is Why Did The DOW Jones Crashed 600 Points This Morning

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:12 AM PDT

© Lucas Jackson / Reuters

NBC: Dow plunges by almost 600 points on mounting recession fears

All three major indices fell by more than 2 percent, sparked by manufacturing data that revealed the biggest decline in factory output since June 2009.

Wall Street took heavy losses on Wednesday, with all three major indices declining by 2 percent as disappointing employment data and a contraction in manufacturing activity fueled fears of an impending recession.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by as much as 598 points, or 2.24 percent, on Wednesday, wiping out all gains for the third quarter. The S&P 500 suffered a similar fate, falling 2.07 percent and erasing any yield for the last quarter. The tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 2 percent as Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft fell.

President Donald Trump blamed the Democrats for the market sell-off, tweeting that "impeachment nonsense" was driving down "the Stock Market, and your 401K's."

WNU Editor: The manufacturing data that many in the media are crediting for this drop was already factored in. The stocks that are tanking today are the tech stocks .... Dow plunges more than 500 points as big tech shares lead the decline (CNBC). And the reason why they are tanking is because of Benie Sanders hospitalization. His probable departure will IMHO catapult Democrat Presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren to the top of the ticket, and the likely Democrat Presidential candidate for next years election. The same Elizabeth Warren who has vowed to break-up the tech companies if she becomes President, a possibility that I can guarantee you is scaring many an investor.

Experimental German Radar 'Tracked Two U.S. F-35 Stealth Jet For 100 Miles'

Daily Mail: Experimental German radar 'tracked two U.S. F-35 stealth jet for 100 MILES' after lying in wait on a pony farm to catch them flying home from airshow

* Radar is designed with sensors and processors capable of tracking F-35 jets
* It works observing electromagnetic emissions in the atmosphere
* Then it will read how signals are bouncing off airborne objects
* German radar maker said the system tracked two US jets for nearly 100 miles

The F-35 stealth fighter is lauded by the U.S Air Force as almost invisible to radar - which is why it has spent $100million on each of the jets.

However, a German radar maker claims to have tracked two of jets from a pony farm for nearly 100 miles using an emerging generation of sensors and processors.

It used a new 'passive radar' system that analyzes how civilian communications - such as radio and TV broadcasts and mobile phone stations - bounce off airborne objects.

This, the firm says, renders the jet's stealth technology, that is designed to absorb ground based radar to stop it reflecting back, redundant.

The Pentagon Just Tested On What Would Happen If Its Air Ops Center In Qatar Is Attacked

Warzone/The Drive: Air Force Just Tested Its Big Backup Plan If Its Air Ops Center In Qatar Gets Attacked

The exercise demonstrated the ability to quickly shift command and control tasks to a base in the United States, if necessary.

The U.S. Air Force shut down its nerve center for air operations all the way from Syria to Afghanistan for a day, and had airmen in South Carolina take over the management of those activities, as part of an extremely important exercise over the weekend. This is the first time in more than a decade that the so-called Combined Air Operations Center, or CAOC, in Qatar was not in control of regional operations. The decision to test this ability to shift responsibility to a command center in the United States came amid increased tensions with Iran following unprecedented suicide drone and cruise missile attacks on Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Air Force's growing concerns, in general, about the vulnerabilities of known bases to enemy strikes in any major conflict.

Will China Be A Bigger Threat To The U.S. Than Russia By 2028

Business Insider/Task & Purpose: The US Army thinks China will be a bigger threat than Russia by 2028 — here's how the service plans to take them on

* The current "era of great power competition" has the US military focusing on Russia and China.
* But the Army sees China becoming a bigger threat within 20 years, and its working on ways to shift its focus to the Indo-Pacific region.

If you've paid even the slightest bit of attention in the last few years, you know that the Pentagon has been zeroing in on the threat that China and Russia pose, and the future battles it anticipates.

The Army has followed suit, pushing to modernize its force to be ready for whatever comes its way.

As part of its modernization, the Army adopted the Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) concept, which serves as the Army's main war-fighting doctrine and lays the groundwork for how the force will fight near-peer threats like Russia and China across land, air, sea, cyber, and space.

Business Insider/Defense News: Taiwan wants to buy US-made artillery to counter China's ever-growing firepower

* Taiwan is reportedly planning to buy as many as 100 M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzers from the US.
* The purchase would extend the reach of Taiwan's artillery as the island country seeks to counter China, which sees it as a renegade province.

MELBOURNE, Australia - Taiwan is seeking to modernize and lengthen the reach of its artillery with the decision to purchase self-propelled howitzers, even as it weighs acquiring or developing its own long-range artillery rockets.

During a hearing of the legislature's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee, Taiwanese Defense Minister Yen Teh-fa confirmed to legislators that Taiwan will seek to acquire the BAE Systems M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzer from the United States.

Yen did not reveal how many howitzers would be sought, although local media reports in July stated that Taiwan was looking at acquiring 100 howitzers.

Germany Needs A New Fighter Plane

David Axe, National Interest: Germany Needs a New Fighter Plane: What About a Stealth F-35 or New F-15EX?

This could get very interesting--very quickly.

he German air force will select a new fighter aircraft in early 2020, German minister of defense Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer announced in late September 2019.

The plane will replace the Luftwaffe's fleet of 93 Panavia Tornado fighter-bombers and complement the service's roughly 140 Eurofighter Typhoons. For the longer term, Germany is working with France to develop a next-generation warplane under the Future Combat Air System program.

It's unclear how many new fighters Berlin wants and therefore exactly how much the purchase could cost. But the price is likely to be in the billions of dollars.

Officially, just two types are in the running for the German acquisition -- the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the Typhoon. Berlin in early 2019 dropped the Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter from the competition.

Teen Shot by Police to Face Rioting Charges as Hong Kong Considers Emergency Regulations

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 11:29 PM PDT

The Hong Kong teenager shot by police during anti-government protests on Tuesday is to be charged with rioting and assaulting police.

The news is sure to inflame tensions in the enclave, which is still recovering from its worst day of violence in over 50 years, and comes amid reports that the government intends to invoke emergency regulations to make the wearing of face masks at demonstrations illegal.

Tsang Chi-kin, 18, is scheduled to appear in Sha Tin court on Thursday afternoon, a court official told TIME. It was not immediately clear if Tsang, who is recovering in hospital, would be appearing in person or via video link, or be represented by counsel.

By the mid-afternoon, hundreds of Tsang’s supporters had gathered at the court, many of them high school students in uniform.

In the crowd was a 28-year-old civil servant, who spoke to TIME on condition of anonymity. “I want to tell the teenagers that I will always support you,” she said. “Many people are behind you, with you. This road is not easy to walk and we will always walk it with you.”

A 65-year-old local resident named Chan, who was outside the court, said: “I feel so sorry for them. They shouldn’t have to face this. I have kids myself, they don’t participate in protest so thankfully I don’t need to worry about them. But all of them inside, they are my kids too.”

As he prepared to enter the courtroom, a supporter named Jeffrey, 28, told TIME that the imposition of emergency regulations “is not going to scare us. We will find a way, and our protests will continue. We refuse to be intimidated by our authoritarian government.”

At the nearby campus of Chinese University, hundreds of students rallied in support of Tsang, who miraculously survived a police bullet at close range during a street battle on Oct. 1.

Students chanted the slogan of Hong Kong’s democratic rebellion—“Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time!”—and carried posters accusing police of attempted murder. Others called for a student strike.

Tsang is the first protester to be hit with a live round during four months of unrest. His wounding has given fresh impetus to a movement seeking democratic reform and self-determination for the former British possession, which was retroceded to China in 1997 after 156 years of colonial rule.

Overnight, protesters across Hong Kong vented their fury at the shooting, erecting barricades, setting fires, and smashing the shopfronts of businesses with mainland Chinese connections. Petrol bombs were hurled at a suburban police headquarters. Hundreds of office workers also marched through the city’s financial district yesterday afternoon to decry the shooting.

Hong Kong has been roiled by four months of unrest. Early demonstrations against a now withdrawn extradition bill, which would have allowed the rendition of fugitives to mainland China for the first time, have rapidly grown into a democratic rebellion against the unpopular local government and a repudiation of Beijing.

Protests Escalate in Iraq, Leaving Nine Dead and Hundreds Wounded

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 06:42 PM PDT

BAGHDAD (AP) — At least seven people were killed and dozens were wounded in clashes that spread across several Iraqi provinces on Wednesday as security forces fired live ammunition and tear gas for the second day to disperse anti-government protesters demanding jobs, improved services and an end to corruption.

The deaths brought the overall number of protesters killed in two days of violence to nine. Protests on Tuesday had left two dead — one in Baghdad and another in the city of Nasiriyah — and over 200 wounded.

The renewed clashes occurred despite a massive security dragnet mounted by the government in an effort to quash the economically-driven protests.

Hundreds of heavily armed security forces and riot police deployed on Baghdad streets, blocking all intersections leading to a major central square Wednesday to prevent a repeat of Tuesday’s protests. Parked armored personnel carriers and SUVs stood guard and by mid-afternoon, residents said authorities had shut down social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.

Groups of protesters continued to take to the streets, some of them calling for toppling the government. Thick black smoke hung over the city as demonstrators set fire to tires and garbage containers. Bursts of heavy gunfire could be heard intermittently. At night, protesters closed the road leading to Baghdad’s airport with roadblocks and burning tires, keeping the way into the city open for arrivals.

The confrontations quickly spread to at least seven other provinces in the country, with an estimated 3,000 demonstrators taking to the streets in the southern city of Basra in a largely peaceful protest on Wednesday evening. Protests and clashes were also reported in Najaf, Nasiriyah, Waset, Diwaniyah and in other places.

The violence was some of the worst between protesters and security forces in Iraq, signaling that the war-weary country could be facing a new round of political instability. Iraq has been caught in the middle of U.S.-Iran tensions in the Middle East, putting an additional strain on the fragile government in Baghdad that hosts thousands of U.S. troops and powerful paramilitary forces allied with Iran.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad called for restraint from all sides. “The right to demonstrate peacefully is a fundamental right in all democracies, but there is no place for violence in demonstrations from any side,” it posted on Twitter.

The protests, organized on social media, started in Tahrir Square on Tuesday, initially driven by economy woes. They began peacefully, calling for an end to corruption, improved basic services and more jobs. But they soon turned violent after security forces fought back demonstrators with water cannons, tear gas and live ammunition.

Protesters responded by calling for toppling the government, throwing stones at security forces and setting tires and trash containers on fire. At least two protesters were killed and more than 200 were wounded.

A few dozen protesters tried to reach Tahrir Square again on Wednesday morning but were met with scores of riot police who formed a human barrier and soldiers who blocked roads, sometimes with barbed wire. Security forces again fired tear gas and live ammunition into the air to disperse the protesters, chasing them away, according to officials.

Saadoun Street, a major commercial thoroughfare leading to Tahrir Square, was deserted and all the shops and restaurants were closed. Smoke could be seen near Tahrir and intermittent gunfire could be heard, as well as ambulance sirens.

“They have transformed Tahrir Square into Tahrir barracks,” said Hussein Saleh, 24. “There are more security forces than there are protesters,” he added, standing with a small placard that read: “I am protesting to take my rights.”

Security and medical officials said three protesters were killed in Baghdad Wednesday and four in Nasiriyah, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) southeast of the capital. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. In Zaafaraniyah, a 10-year-old girl was also killed when she was hit by a car speeding away from a checkpoint amid protests.

Security officials said authorities imposed a curfew in several southern Iraqi cities including Nasiriyah, Amara and Hilla after protesters attacked government buildings there. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations

NetBlocks, which monitors cybersecurity and internet governance, reported that Internet access was cut off across much of Iraq and social and messaging apps blocked amid the growing unrest.

The protests are the most serious challenge to Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi’s nearly year-old government. The premier held a national security emergency meeting Wednesday. His office later said the meeting denounced the violence that accompanied the protests and said measures will be taken to protect citizens and public property and that the government will spare no effort to fulfill the demands of the protesters.

Earlier in the morning, municipal workers were spraying Tahrir Square with water while bulldozers removed debris from Tuesday’s demonstrations. A bridge that leads from the square to Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone — home to government offices and foreign embassies — was closed.

Activists drove around in a car, distributing water to protesters and soldiers alike.

“We are not against you, you are our brothers,” one activist told a soldier as he offered him a cold bottle of water.

In Zaafaraniya, southeast of Baghdad, at least five people were treated for breathing difficulties after police used tear gas to break up a small protest. Police also used tear gas in al-Shaab, north of the Iraqi capital. Security officials said five people were arrested in al-Shaab and three in Zaafaraniya.

The protests appear to be spontaneous and without political leadership, organized by people on social media against corruption and lack of basic services, such as electricity and water.

Dozens of university graduates unable to find jobs in the corruption-plagued but oil-rich country also joined the rallies. Politicians denounced the violence and at least one, influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, called for an investigation.

Iraq’s interior and health ministries issued a joint statement saying one person was killed in Baghdad on Tuesday and 200 were wounded, including 40 members of the security forces.

The statement said authorities “regretted” the violence that accompanied the protests, blaming “a group of rioters” for inciting violence.

The U.N. secretary-general’s special representative for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, expressed “grave concern” over the violence at the demonstrations in Baghdad and elsewhere.

“Every individual has the right to speak freely, in keeping with the law,” she said in a statement, urging authorities to exercise restraint in their handling of the protests.

Trump Administration Announces Tariffs on Whiskey, Cheese and Aircrafts From the E.U.

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 02:27 PM PDT

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration announced Wednesday that it will impose tariffs on $7.5 billion in European imports beginning Oct. 18 in a case involving European Union subsidies to the plane maker Airbus.

The latest escalation in the administration’s tariffs will open a new chapter in the trade wars that are depressing the world economy and heightening fears of a global recession. It comes just as the Trump administration is in the midst of trying to negotiate a resolution to its high-stakes trade war with China.

The administration received a green light earlier Wednesday from the World Trade Organization, which ruled that the United States could impose the tariffs as retaliation for illegal aid that the 28-country EU gave to Airbus in its competition with its American rival Boeing.

Culminating a 15-year fight over the EU’s subsidizing of Airbus, the administration’s Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said it plans to publish a list of targeted products later Wednesday or on Thursday.

A senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that EU aircraft will face a 10% tariff and other products a 25% import tax. The tariffs are intended to pressure the EU into dropping its subsidies for Airbus.

President Donald Trump called the WTO ruling a “big win for the United States” and asserted that it happened because WTO officials “want to make sure I’m happy.”

“The WTO has been much better to us since I’ve been president because they understand they can’t get away with what they’ve been getting away with for so many years, which is ripping off the United States,” Trump said at a joint White House news conference with President Sauli Niinisto of Finland.

The move escalates uncertainty for the U.S. and global economies at a time when Trump’s trade war with Beijing is weighing heavily on businesses, particularly manufacturers.

The U.S. had prepared for Wednesday’s ruling and already drawn up lists of the dozens of goods it would put tariffs on. They include EU cheeses, olives, and whiskey, as well as planes, helicopters and aircraft parts in the case _ though the decision is likely to require fine-tuning of that list if the Trump administration agrees to go for the tariffs.

The tariffs can take effect no earlier than mid-October because a key WTO panel needs to formally sign off on them first. But they will likely have an impact on agricultural and other sectors of the European economy, at a time when other tariff battles have dented global trade growth.

Stock markets around the world, which were already down on concerns for the world economy, added to their losses on the news.

Wednesday’s award follows a WTO ruling in May 2018 that the EU had illegally helped Airbus with subsidies.

However, it does not end the long-running trans-Atlantic dispute over aircraft: WTO arbitrators are expected to rule next year about how much the EU can impose in tariffs following a separate decision that went against Boeing.

The EU’s top trade official said the bloc would prefer to reach a settlement with the United States to avoid a tariff war _ but it will respond if U.S. President Donald Trump imposes new duties on EU products.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said a tariff war “would only inflict damage on businesses and citizens on both sides of the Atlantic, and harm global trade and the broader aviation industry at a sensitive time.”

“If the U.S. decides to impose WTO authorized countermeasures, it will be pushing the EU into a situation where we will have no other option than to do the same,” she said.

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, who was meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Rome on Wednesday, vowed to “defend our businesses.” Italian wine and cheeses could face an impact from U.S. tariffs.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa in Rome, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “I’m very hopeful that we can get an outcome that works for everyone, that’s consistent with making sure that every American business is treated fairly.’’

The award is the largest among about two dozen at the WTO since it was created nearly 25 years ago.

Unlike Trump’s unilateral tariffs on billions of dollars-worth of steel, aluminum and other goods from China, the EU and elsewhere, the retaliatory tariffs authorized in the Airbus case have the stamp of approval from the WTO, an organization that he has repeatedly criticized.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged “we have lost a matter under WTO law.”

“This means it’s not some sort of arbitrary question but a verdict according to international law that now weighs on Airbus, one must sadly say,” she told reporters in Berlin. “We have to see how the Americans will react now.”

The WTO in May 2018 found that EU “launch aid” for Airbus had resulted in lost sales for Boeing in the twin-aisle and very-large-aircraft markets. The ruling centered on Airbus’ 350XWB _ a rival of Boeing’s 787 _ and the double-decker A380, which tops the Boeing 747 as the world’s largest commercial passenger plane.

The case itself dates to 2004, a testament to the plodding and thorough rhythm of the Geneva-based trade body.

Rod Hunter, a partner at the law firm Baker McKenzie and a former White House economic official, saw three possible outcomes: The EU can end the offending subsidies to Airbus, decide to absorb the tariffs or try to reach a negotiated settlement with the Trump administration.

Given Trump’s enthusiasm for tariffs, Hunter said, it’s unclear what the president and his trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, really want: “Does he want to set up a negotiation to get a resolution or is it just tariffs for tariffs’ sake?’’

The $7.5 billion represents a fraction of EU exports to the United States, which last year came to $688 billion.

But the specter of more tariffs comes at a sensitive time. Trump’s aggressive use of tariffs _ especially against China _ has shaken financial markets, hobbled global trade and hurt manufacturers paralyzed with uncertainty about where to buy supplies, locate factories and sell their products. On Tuesday, a private index of U.S. manufacturing output dropped to the lowest level since the recession year 2009.

“The market effect could be larger than just the impact on the European exports and their U.S. customers,’’ Hunter said.

Gary Hufbauer, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and a former U.S. trade official, cast doubt on prospects for a EU-US trade deal that will ease tensions and ward off tit-for-tat tariffs, at least before the 2020 U.S. presidential election. “Election years are bad for trade deals,’’ Hufbauer said.

The WTO is already examining a dozen cases involving U.S. tariffs and countermeasures brought by its trading partners over the administration’s steel and aluminum tariffs. Trump has insisted the move is needed to protect U.S. national security interests, but the Europeans claim it is simply protectionism and breaks global trade rules.

The EU has introduced “rebalancing” tariffs on about 2.8 billion euros ($3 billion) of U.S. steel, agricultural and other products. Trump has also threatened to slap duties on European automakers.

Mourners in Istanbul Pay Tribute to Jamal Khashoggi One Year After Murder at Saudi Consulate

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 09:20 AM PDT

The U.N.’s special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, a Yemeni Nobel Laureate and the owner of the Washington Post were among mourners who gathered outside the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Istanbul on Wednesday to mark one year since the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“No one should ever have to endure what you did,” Amazon CEO and Post owner Jeff Bezos told Khashoggi’s fiancée Hatice Cengiz on stage, pointing to the street where on Oct. 2 last year she had paced for hours as she waited in vain for him to emerge from the consulate. Bezos embraced Cengiz and told her, “It is unimaginable and you need to know that you are in our hearts. We are here and you are not alone.”

Khashoggi, a journalist and commentator who had been critical of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, vanished one year ago after entering his country’s consulate to obtain a marriage certificate. It later emerged he had been killed and dismembered by a Saudi assassination squad. U.S. intelligence concluded the Crown Prince had ordered Khashoggi’s killing, and in June, a United Nations special report found “credible evidence” warranting a deeper investigation into the role of the Crown Prince in the murder.

In an interview with 60 Minutes that aired on Sunday, bin Salman said he takes “full responsibility” for Khashoggi’s murder, but denied that he had ordered the killing, calling the death “a mistake” and “a heinous crime.”

Speaking after the memorial, U.N. special rapporteur Agnes Callamard told TIME that although MBS’s acknowledgement Khashoggi’s killing was a state crime was important, his attempt to personally distance himself from the murder was unconvincing.

“It’s what heads of corporations are always asked to do when there is a f*ck up: claim responsibility but protect yourself from personal liability,” she said. “But the facts go against his statement because the relationships between Mr. Mohamed bin Salman and the people implicated in the crimes are much closer than he’s pretending they are.”

Last month, a transcript of Khashoggi’s dying moments was leaked to Turkish journalists. In it members of the Saudi assassination squad referred to Khashoggi as a “sacrificial animal” and detailed plans to carve up his body. “Don’t cover my mouth,” Khashoggi said in his last panicked words, “I have asthma, don’t do it. You’ll suffocate me.”

Wadah Khanfar, the former director of Doha-based news network Al Jazeera, said in a speech on Wednesday that Khashoggi’s killers “wanted him to disappear but his image and his voice are chasing them everywhere.” Turan Kislakci, head of the Turkish Arab Journalists Association has announced that his association is attempting to buy the building of the Saudi Consulate and turn it into a permanent memorial for Khashoggi.

Rights advocates have called for a stronger response from President Donald Trump, who has declined to condemn bin Salman. In remarks addressed to mourners on Wednesday, Washington Post CEO Fred Ryan, whose news paper published 20 of Khashoggi’s columns, spoke about the danger of authoritarian rulers increasing their grip on the free press “even in the United States.” He referred pointedly to the “indifference some word leaders have shown” after Khashoggi’s killing but said it could be a catalyst for enduring change.

Khashoggi was one of four journalists and one news organization recognized collectively as the “Guardians” as TIME 2018 Person of the Year, for “taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths.”

In the garden in front of the Saudi Arabian consulate Cengiz unveiled a memorial stone for her fiancée. Khashoggi’s friends and colleagues spoke of his integrity and principled pursuit of the truth, of other journalists killed and detained under authoritarian regimes, and his inspiration for a new “Arab Spring.”

“I want to know what happened to his body. I want his friends to be released from jail. I want that those in power are held accountable for their actions,” Cengiz said in a speech that also reflected on what Khashoggi meant to her personally. “He was the love of my life. I still love him.”

Boris Johnson Says U.K. Is Offering Brexit Compromise to E.U.

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:49 AM PDT

(MANCHESTER, England) –– Britain has sent its proposals for a Brexit deal to leaders of the European Union, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging “rapid negotiations towards a solution.”

The proposals submitted on Wednesday focus on maintaining an open border between the U.K.’s Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland – the key sticking point to a Brexit deal.

Johnsons says in a letter to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that the U.K. proposes to do that by keeping Northern Ireland closely aligned to EU rules for trade in goods, possibly for an extended period.

He says not reaching a deal would be “a failure of statecraft for which we would all be responsible.”

‘They’ve Been Very Kind to Me.’ Meghan Markle Discusses How the Royal Tour Revolves Around Baby Archie’s Feeding Schedule

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:43 AM PDT

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex has discussed about how she balances traveling with a nearly five-month-old son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor while she and Prince Harry complete their Africa tour.

Markle told reporters that most of the tour schedule is based around her son Archie’s feeding schedule.

“We’re doing well,” she said on Tuesday. “I think the schedule, they’ve been very kind to me because everything is based around Archie’s feed times.”

She added: “It’s a full plate, but we’re making it work. It’s worth it.”

The royal couple began their first official tour as a family with Archie in tow when they traveled on Sept. 23, kicking off the 10-day tour in South Africa. Archie made a rare public appearance when the family met with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu in the first few days of the tour.

U.S. Can Impose Tariffs On $7.5 Billion of E.U. Goods in Retaliation for Airbus Subsidies

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:38 AM PDT

(BRUSSELS) –– The World Trade Organization says the United States can impose tariffs on up to $7.5 billion worth of goods from the European Union as retaliation for illegal subsidies to European plane-maker Airbus — a record award from the trade body.

The move green-lights the Trump administration to slap countermeasures on the 28-member bloc and follows a WTO ruling in May 2018 on the Airbus subsidies.

Wednesday’s award doesn’t end the long-running trans-Atlantic dispute over aircraft: WTO arbitrators are expected to rule next year on how much the EU can impose in tariffs following a separate decision that went against Boeing.

The U.S. has already announced plans to impose tariffs on EU cheeses, olives, whiskey, as well as aircraft and aircraft parts. Wednesday’s decision may require fine-tuning of that list.

Ukraine’s Former President Says He Discussed Investments With Trump’s Lawyer Rudy Giuliani

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 07:01 AM PDT

(KYIV, Ukraine) — Ukraine’s former president said Wednesday he discussed investments with President Donald Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, in 2017, but that he never discussed Ukrainian companies with any U.S. official.

Like many Ukrainians, former President Petro Poroshenko is trying to distance himself from the U.S. impeachment inquiry into Trump, triggered by a phone call between the American leader and Poroshenko’s successor, Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We definitely do not want to be involved in the political process inside the United States,” Poroshenko, now a member of parliament, told reporters.

Poroshenko said he met Giuliani in 2017 as a “friend of Ukraine” and they discussed “political support and investment” but nothing else. He wouldn’t elaborate.

“We never ever spoke about commercial companies” with Trump, former President Barack Obama, current Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, or “any U.S. officials,” said Poroshenko, who led Ukraine from 2014 to 2019.

Giuliani wants Ukraine to investigate Biden, whose son Hunter served on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. Trump asked Zelensky to “look into” the Bidens in a July 25 phone call that is now at the center of an impeachment inquiry.

In his first public comments on the phone call, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Trump’s critics are using “every excuse to attack” the U.S. president. Putin made his remarks at a conference in Moscow.

Poroshenko said he was not aware that Giuliani had met with then-Ukrainian prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko.

Like Poroshenko, many Ukrainians are shrugging off U.S. efforts to impeach Trump as someone else’s problem.

But they are worried about one thing: that Ukraine’s role in the Trump affair strengthens Russia’s hand, and hobbles the politically inexperienced Zelensky just as he’s trying to tackle the problems that matter to them most: corruption and an armed conflict with Russian-backed separatists in the east that has divided their nation.

Zelensky announced an agreement Tuesday with Ukrainian separatists that paves the way for peace talks to end five years of fighting, but Ukrainian nationalists denounced it as capitulation to Russia.

The U.S. scandal “is weakening Zelensky’s standing inside the country,” said Tatyana Stanovaya, head of the R.Politik political analysis firm.

A rough transcript of the July phone call between Trump and Zelensky shows the Ukrainian leader flattering Trump, criticizing the U.S. ambassador and European leaders, and saying Ukraine’s chief prosecutor is “my guy.”

“He gave a reason to doubt his ability to be an honest president,” Stanovaya said. “It’s the first big blow for him” since he overwhelmingly beat Poroshenko in Ukraine’s April election.

Zelensky’s comments on the call will fuel the Kremlin’s view that Ukrainian leaders are beholden to U.S. interests.

As the impeachment process heats up, the U.S. State Department gave initial approval to a $39 million sale of anti-tank missiles to Ukraine to help the country battle Russia-backed separatists. The proposed aid is in addition to some $400 million in U.S. military aid released last month.

Boris Johnson Is Facing Allegations That He Groped Women and Misused Public Funds. Here’s What to Know

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:51 AM PDT

Boris Johnson has been rocked by fresh allegations relating to his personal life, as he continues to battle intransigent lawmakers over his approach to Brexit.

On the eve of the Conservative Party Conference, Charlotte Edwardes, a journalist for the U.K. Sunday Times newspaper, accused Johnson of groping her at a private lunch in 1999.

This is on top of allegations of an improper relationship with an American entrepreneur, Jennifer Arcuri, during his time as London mayor. Johnson denies any wrongdoing.

But the U.K. Prime Minister has been dogged by claims and reports about his private life throughout his career as a journalist and as politician. Here’s what to know:

What are the groping allegations against Boris Johnson?

Edwardes accused Johnson of groping her leg during an event at the offices of The Spectator, a British magazine the future Prime Minister edited between 1999 and 2005. Johnson has denied the claims. The allegations were made by Edwardes, 45, in a Sunday Times article on Sept. 29.

She wrote: “I’m seated on Johnson’s right; on his left is a young woman I know. More wine is poured; more wine is drunk. Under the table I feel Johnson’s hand on my thigh. He gives it a squeeze. His hand is high up my leg and he has enough inner flesh beneath his fingers to make me sit suddenly upright.”

After confiding in the young woman on Johnson’s left, the guest tells her “Oh god, he did exactly the same to me,” Edwardes claimed.

Responding to the allegations on the first day of the Conservative Party conference, Johnson’s spokesperson said: “This allegation is untrue.” Edwardes responded in a Tweet: “If the prime minister doesn’t recollect the incident then clearly I have a better memory than he does.”

Outside the conference, Carrie Symonds, Boris Johnson’s current partner, declined to answer TIME’s questions about the groping allegations.

At least one of Johnsons’s own cabinet colleagues believes the allegations have some substance. Health Secretary Matt Hancock came to Edwardes’ support, saying she was “trustworthy.” Amber Rudd, the former Work and Pensions Secretary, said she agreed with Hancock.

What are the allegations against Boris Johnson relating to Jennifer Arcuri?

Jennifer Arcuri meets Boris Johnson at World Islamic Economic Forum
Vicki Couchman — ShutterstockJennifer Arcuri meets Boris Johnson as part of Innotechsummit.com Google Hangout at Excel World Islamic Economic Forum, London, UK – 30 Oct 2013. Boris Johnson was the Mayor of London at the time.

An investigation by The Sunday Times revealed that Arcuri, a U.S. entrepreneur who has described Johnson as her “best friend”, was given a total of £126,000 in public money and attended three official overseas trade missions led by Boris Johnson whilst he was the Mayor of London. Johnson has since been referred to the U.K. police watchdog by the Greater London Authority monitoring officer Emma Strain, who oversees the conduct of the mayor and other members.

On Sept. 29, sources – including a New York Times journalist – told the Sunday Times that Jennifer Arcuri confided in friends that she was engaged in a sexual affair with Boris Johnson during his time as Mayor of London. David Enrich, the financial editor of the New York Times, told the Sunday Times that he was told of an alleged relationship between Johnson and Arcuri by two of Arcuri’s friends when he was working for another newspaper. A friend of Arcuri told The Sunday Times that Johnson was a regular visitor of Arcuri’s flat in East London.

Jennifer Arcuri did not respond to a request to comment by The Sunday Times in relation to her relationship with Johnson, but did issue a short statement on Sept. 27. It read: “Any grants received by my companies and any trade mission I joined were purely in respect to my role as a legitimate businesswoman. I am incredibly disappointed that The Sunday Times cannot write about a successful female entrepreneur without smearing her with innuendo based on leaks from City Hall.”

During his time as Mayor of London, Jennifer Arcuri’s company, Innotech, received two sponsorship grants totaling £11,500 from London & Partners, the organization that Johnson was responsible for at the time.

Arcuri also attended three overseas trade missions led by Johnson to Singapore and Malaysia, New York and Tel Aviv, despite her businesses not meeting the eligibility criteria for the trips. Johnson’s team overruled the decisions made by officials to not include her on the official visits to New York and Tel Aviv.

As Mayor, Johnson was bound by the Greater London Authority’s code of conduct, which stated that he must “declare any private interests relating to their public duties and to take steps to resolve and conflicts arising in a way that protects the public interest.”

How has Johnson responded?

Boris Johnson has refused to answer questions about his relationship with Jennifer Arcuri, but he has denied any impropriety. On Sept. 29, the P.M. said that there was “no interest to declare” regarding their relationship.

He told the BBC’s Andrew Marr show: “Everything was done in accordance with the code, and everything was done with full propriety. There was no interest to declare. Let’s be absolutely clear, I am very, very proud of everything that we did and certainly everything that I did as mayor of London.”

What happens next?

The U.K. Prime Minister was referred to the UK’s police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, on Sept. 20, to assess whether Johnson should be investigated for criminal charges relating to misconduct in public office. This follows the allegations by The Sunday Times of a potential conflict of interest with regard to his relationship with Jennifer Arcuri during his time as London Mayor.

What other controversies has Johnson faced?

Johnson’s colorful private life has been heavily scrutinized over the years. He wed his first wife, Allegra Mostyn-Owen, in 1987 but they divorced in 1993. During his first marriage, Johnson was having an affair with Marina Wheeler. Wheeler was heavily pregnant by Johnson by the time Johnson’s divorce was finalized with Mostyn-Owen in 1993. The Mail reported “they married 12 days later” and went on to have four children together.

In 2004, Johnson was forced to leave his post as shadow Arts Minister for lying to Conservative Party Leader Michael Howard about a four-year-long marital affair with journalist Petronella Wyatt. He called claims about the affair an “inverted pyramid of piffle,” before Wyatt’s mother confirmed it.

Then, in 2010, reports emerged that Johnson had fathered a child with Helen Macintyre, an arts consultant. The reports only came to light after Macintyre lost a three-year legal battle to stop the media from naming Johnson as the father of the child. Johnson and Marina Wheeler eventually separated in 2018 and he later began a relationship with current partner, Carrie Symonds.

Earlier this year, on June. 21, neighbours called police to the home of Boris Johnson and his partner, Carrie Symonds, after they heard screaming, shouting and banging. A neighbour alleged that they heard Symonds telling Johnson to “get off me” and “get out of my flat”. Johnson told the BBC that it was “simply unfair” to “drag” his loved ones into politics. Symonds has not commented on their argument.

Sunil Mittal wants to play white knight for troubled CG Power

Posted:

Bharti Enterprises founder and telecom czar Sunil Mittal along with a clutch of other institutional shareholders of fraud-hit CG Power & Industrial Solutions Ltd is plotting a revival of the firm. The investors led by SBM Holdings, Mittal's private firm, are looking to put in working capital and revive the company's domestic operations. Also, talks are on with lenders to recast loans, said three people with direct knowledge of the developments.Investors willing to bring in funds have insisted that CG Power should put in place a new management with no links to the Avantha Group. They have also refused to pay off CG Power's loans, after allegations surfaced that ousted chairman Gautam Thapar had siphoned off funds.SBM Holdings' stake in CG Power stood at 8.3% as on June 30, 2019. The Mittal company is looking to buy more shares, sources said. "The idea is to take over management control and revive the company. The domestic assets and businesses are very attractive," said a person with direct knowledge of the developments. 71415695 SBM Holdings bought about 4.99% stake in CG Power during January-February 2019 and raised it to 8.29% in the June quarter, according to stock market filings.India Business Holds Most AssetsIn an emailed response, the spokesperson for Bharti Group declined to comment. CG Power did not respond to queries. The CG Power board is currently getting the financials of the company re-audited. Its total debt is pegged at Rs 1,600-1,700 crore."CG Power's businesses can be separated into three buckets: the operating business in India, holding and investment companies, and the loss-making international businesses. The operational India business is what holds most of the assets and is attractive," said another person involved in the developments."The equity investors are working with the lenders to recast the loans, and it is likely that the banks will be forced to take a haircut," said another person with direct knowledge of the talks. "The equity investors are interested in restarting the business and will pump in the required working capital."In August, the board of CG Power said it will restate accounts after discovering "significant accounting irregularities" and governance lapses. Promoter and chairman Thapar was subsequently removed by the board. Efforts are on by the board and investors to deleverage the company, sell non-core assets and restart and optimise operations.Last month, KKR India Debt Opportunities Fund II and KKR India Financial Services invoked shares pledged by the promoters. The 62.6 million shares translated into a near-10% stake in the company. In March, Yes Bank had acquired 80 million shares, implying a 12.8% stake, by invoking pledged shares of the promoters. The shares were pledged as collateral for credit facilities extended to entities related to Thapar.Narayan Seshadri, founder of consulting firm Tranzmute Capital, was appointed to head the board-driven management clean-up as an independent director and is currently calling the shots at CG Power.

5G is about to put India in a very tight spot

America applied more pressure on India on the contentious issue of deploying 5G technology in a recent closed door meeting between key officials of both the countries. It also suggested alternatives to data localisation. The meeting, held in New Delhi, came within days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit and amid trade negotiations between the two countries. The Indian delegation comprised officials from the ministries of home, telecom and electronics & IT.Security ConcernsIt also included officials from National Security Council, Defence Research & Development Organisation and National Payments Corporation of India. The US delegation was led by Robert Strayer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Cyber and International Communications and Information Policy. 71415757 The US delegation urged that New Delhi and Washington should "work together only with trusted sources" when deploying 5G, people familiar with the matter told ET. The implication, they said, was that Chinese telecom gear makers such as Huawei should be kept out of partnering in next generation telecom technology.Huawei has on its part made public statements made earlier in India on security. "Huawei is part of the positive initiatives to improve India's network security and capability which goes beyond just 5G," its India CEO Jay Chen had said. Some Indian security specialists, including Professor V Kamakoti from IIT Madras, have said security must be "top priority" for 5G rollout. US officials have been globally raising the issue of Huawei's approach to security for a long time after Washington banned the firm, alleging it spies for the Chinese government.US pressure on India as the latter prepares to start its 5G rollout process comes in this context."We heard them out and broadly agree with the principle of securing our communication networks as well as greater cooperation in this respect, but the final decision of permitting Huawei in 5G obviously rests with the Indian government," said a member of the Indian side.On data localisation, the US delegation suggested "that rather than insisting on localising data, India could resort to the Cloud Act and the APEC CBPR for exchange of data with America," another person said.America's Cloud Act allows its government to compel US-based technology companies to provide data regardless of whether the data is stored in the US or abroad. The APEC Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System is a government-backed data privacy certification that companies can join to show compliance with internationally-recognised data privacy protections.Indian officials, one of the people quoted above said, "made it clear that since the data privacy legislation was in the draft stage, the data authority could look at these options once it becomes law…we also apprised them (the US delegation) that nonpersonal data was being looked at separately by a committee"."The issue of various American states stitching up their unique data laws was also discussed…how this could become cumbersome, to which US officials replied that a federal law on data could soon be brought in, thus making it uniform," another person said. Another topic discussed was manufacturing opportunities arising out of recent US-China trade wars and how Washington and New Delhi can work together to promote local production in India. "This area can see greater cooperation between the two sides and India communicated how it has already started taking steps such as the corporate tax cuts to attract investment out of China," the person quoted above said.

Amazon leaves its Future to govt

KOLKATA: Amazon has sought Competition Commission of India (CCI) approval for its proposed Rs 1,500 crore deal to acquire 49% of Future Coupons Ltd (FCL), a Future Retail promoter group company, even though it doesn't have to, said two executives with knowledge of the matter. Amazon wants to make sure that the transaction is in line with the tightened norms for foreign direct investment (FDI) in ecommerce, they said. The US ecommerce giant's investment arm, Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings LLC, which will be acquiring the stake, said in the CCI filing that it would acquire "voting and non-voting equity shares" of FCL in the proposed deal.Amazon had used a similar structure while acquiring 49% in More supermarket stores — 17% of equity with voting rights and 32% without such rights — to ensure that the deal was compliant with the revised FDI norms. While it couldn't be ascertained whether the Amazon-Future group deal will have the same split, an industry executive said that FCL currently doesn't have differential voting right (DVR) shares.A Future Group spokesperson declined to comment as did Amazon. The FDI regulations issued in December, which came into effect from February, said that marketplaces should hold less than 26% equity with voting rights in any seller. 71415730 'Paying a Premium for FCL Shares'The norms also capped the amount of goods that an affiliate of the marketplace could supply to any independent seller on the platform. An executive said Amazon is structuring the deal to ensure that Future Group will continue to be a seller and its private labels can be sold on the Amazon India marketplace."The proposed combination (read: deal) consists of certain other constituent steps involving FCL, FCRPL (Future Corporate Resources Ltd), and FRL (Future Retail Ltd)," Amazon said in its CCI application, a copy of which ET has seen. "It is submitted that each of the constituent steps of the proposed combination, including the acquisition of shares of FCL by the investor, on a standalone basis, are exempt transactions, and need not be notified to the Hon'ble commission."FCL, owned by Future Group promoter, the Biyani family, holds 39.6 million warrants in Future Retail, which when exercised, will convert into a 7.5% stake in the latter. The promoter group in total owns 47.02% in Future Retail that operates 295 Big Bazaar stores and about 1,600 neighborhood grocery stores, including EasyDay and Heritage Fresh.Amazon has the option to become the largest shareholder in Future Retail and can exercise this call option anytime between the third and the 10th year. However, details haven't yet been announced or notified in the CCI application.Another executive said Amazon is paying a substantial premium for FCL shares to retain the option of becoming a dominant shareholder in Future Retail. "Amazon is paying around Rs 660 per share, which is around 65% premium to the current share price," he said.FCL is engaged in developing innovative value-added payment products and solutions such as corporate gift cards, loyalty cards and reward cards. The partnership will initially result in collaborations between Amazon and Future Retail on payment platforms and solutions and will eventually be extended toward pickup, delivery and fulfilment of customer orders through Future Group's nationwide network of stores in 440 cities and towns across India.

Apple’s 1st own India outlet to come up at BKC

Posted:

NEW DELHI: The Cupertino-based tech giant Apple Inc. has chosen Mumbai's Maker Maxity mall, co-owned by Reliance Industries, to open its first company-owned iconic outlet in India, four people familiar with the development told ET. Apple leased around 20,000-25,000 sq ft space spread over three floors in the mall located in the commercial hub of Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the sources said.Manish Maker, partner in Maker Maxity with RIL as the other JV partner, declined comment for this report. One of the persons cited earlier said a team from Apple US is currently camping in Mumbai for designing and creating layout of the outlet that is expected to open doors in September next year. "Fitouts have started," he said. Apple is importing the fixtures and furniture for the debut outlet and will take about eight months to a year to finish, said the other person. The upcoming flagship store in BKC will be the largest Apple store in India and will be three times the size of its largest franchisee run 8,000 sq ft outlet in Mumbai. The Flagship Apple Premium Reseller (FAPR) store opened in August occupies two floors in Mumbai's High Street Phoenix mall and showcases Apple's entire range available in India."This COCO (company-owned, company-operated) store will be at par with Apple stores in Hong Kong that are in the range of 20,000 to 25,000 sq ft," said a second person adding Apple has taken the mall space on a revenuesharing model with the shopping centre. "The Mumbai flagship store will be on three levels – one floor dedicated as experience centre, another floor for retailing and the top for service centre."Apple plans to open its fully-owned iconic outlets in India were gathering dust with the government for years as India mandates companies applying for more than 51% foreign direct investment (FDI) through single-brand retailing route to locally source 30% of the products they sell in the country. However, in August India amended rules for single brand licence holders to include exports and contract manufacturing to be counted in the mandatory 30% local sourcing norm over a period of five years.Apple did not respond to specific questions on their plans for the store opening in India and instead sent a statement that it had issued in August when India relaxed single brand norms."We love our customers in India and we're eager to serve them online and in-store with the same experience and care that Apple customers around the world enjoy," the Apple statement said. "We appreciate the support and hard work by Prime Minister Modi and his team to make this possible and we look forward to one day welcoming customers to India's first Apple retail store. It will take us some time to get our plans underway and we'll have more to announce at a future date."

SBI, Bank of Baroda squeeze micro-ATM transactions of other banks

Posted:

BENGALURU: Public sector lenders State Bank of India (SBI) and Bank of Baroda (BoB) have limited the cash withdrawals of customers using micro-ATMs of other banks to just four times a month, in what could cause transactions undertaken through the Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS) route to fall significantly. While BoB is allowing customers to do four transactions a day, SBI has limited it to just one. SBI account holders who are not part of the government's direct benefit transfer scheme are allowed to do five transactions a month, three industry sources told ET. These limits only apply in case the customer uses the micro-ATM terminal of another bank.SBI did not respond to queries."As per NPCI advisory, BoB has fixed issuer side limit of four transaction per month by a customer. This has been implemented to protect the interest of financial inclusion customers, the reason behind the move is acquirer banks' agents indulging in split transactions and as per advisory from NPCI," said a BoB spokesperson. In perhaps some early signs of a drop in transactions, AePS recorded 201 million transactions in September, a nearly 9% reduction from the 220 million in July, as per data by the National Payments Corporation of India, which manages the payment network.Through AePS, depositors use biometric credentials to withdraw cash from retail agents, instead of swiping their debit cards at ATMs.Banks provide the service through micro-ATM terminals in areas where ATMs are not viable. Many customers use the service to access the cash subsidy they receive from the government into their 'direct benefit transfer' accounts."We found that many of our customers were splitting one big cash-out into multiple small ones," said a senior banker in the know of the matter. "While the customer does not get any benefit through such acts, retailers make extra money since their commissions are based on the number of transactions."For instance, instead of taking out Rs 10,000 in one go, a customer was doing five transactions of Rs 2,000 each. For every such transaction, the customer's bank bears the cost. If, for example, a BoB customer uses a Yes Bank micro-ATM, then BoB pays 0.5% of the transaction amount, or Rs 15, whichever is lower, to Yes Bank. These are the interchange rates decided by the industry. Retailers or agents get a share of this amount."While fraudulent transactions are happening, I think banks should bar such agents from the network, rather than stopping every customer from accessing the service beyond once; this move will cause challenges for rural poor who might need cash urgently," said a top executive of a digital payments company.

Children, parents won’t let toy sales slow down

Posted:

BENGALURU: Leading toy retailers, including Hamleys and Toys R Us, are seeing high sales growth in India driven by children's pester power and parental guilt at a time when economic slowdown had dampened sales of other discretionary categories. The $1.5-billion domestic toy industry has also seen a flurry of new launches across price points as they look to aggressively expand across tiers. "The economic slowdown has not impacted us. Hamleys works on two parameters — pester power and guilt," said Kinjal Shah, business head for Hamleys India.Pester-power or 'nag factor' is the tendency of children to unrelentingly request for advertised items. Toy retailing is also often fueled by parents' guilt, especially in double income households that are unable to spend time with their kids and in turn indulge in an expensive toy. Hamleys, owned by Reliance Retail, also attributed rising disposable income and smaller family sizes to the growth in demand."The average billing has been going up since last year with toy makers and brands increasing options and offering add-ons and accessories," added Shah. As a result, it has more than doubled its store count to 108 now from 51 stores a year ago.71415848 The estimated Rs 2-lakh-crore global toy market is dominated by China, which sells close to Rs 1.4 lakh crore worth of merchandise. In comparison, the Indian toy segment is largely unbranded. Indian toy market was worth $1.5 billion in 2018, registering a CAGR of 15.9% between 2011and 2018, according to market research firm IMARC. The market is projected to cross $3.3 billion by 2024.Despite shutting down stores in the US due to bankruptcy, Toys R Us is upbeat on India. Adeeb Ahamed, managing director of Tablez India that launched Toys R Us in India, said it has seen a growth of 10% on the average bill value. "Structural changes in the economy like GST implementation ensure no tax evasion and new testing norms are helping consumers move from unorganised to organised players," he said.Unlike hundreds of multi-branded stores for apparel and lifestyle products, toy store chains are just a handful. No wonder, ecommerce companies are helping the segment grow, especially in smaller towns. This is despite higher price-tags."We have to admit that our product is expensive and the business in India is still in infancy stage. Having said that, Lego business in India grew about 25% in 2018. Ecommerce is taking our products to Tier 2 towns like Indore, Amritsar, Bhubaneshwar and North-East," Rohan Mathur, senior regional sales manager- South Asia for Lego Group told ET in July.Lego, one of the largest toy makers in the world, is known for its premium elaborate game sets in themes like city life, police stations and fire brigade averaging at Rs 1,500-2,000 per set.

Oil market ignoring geopolitical risks; trade talks next big trigger

Posted:

Crude oil had a roller coaster last month as demand concerns overpowered escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities didn't have much to fuel the rally as the country restored oil production levels. Multiple reports that Aramco's production would be back online quickly helped push oil back to where they were prior to the attacks. Markets started discounting the fact that geopolitical premium has expired, but there remains uncertainty as Iran is preparing for further attacks should the US not ease oil sanctions. Demand worries are also back after Germany, Europe's largest economy, experienced the sharpest contraction in manufacturing output since 2009. Saudi Arabia surprised the market, which helped a great deal in comforting anxious investors. A total of 5.7 mbpd of production was reportedly offline, which represents more than 5 per cent of the world's oil production, but the oil shale boom in the US added 5.9 mbpd of oil to the oil market. This means that the attacks in Saudi Arabia have knocked offline the equivalent of the entire US shale boom. Saudi Aramco has restored oil production capacity to 11.3 mbpd, the level before the attacks. Saudi's oil production from Khurais plant is now at more than 1.3 mbpd, while production from Abqaiq plant is at about 3 mbpd. The market seems to be confused as there are mixed opinions about period of whole restoration, and if there is any delay, we might see some appreciation. In addition to drawing down inventories Aramco has reportedly been sourcing crude oil from nearby countries such as Kuwait, and it has been offering some customers heavy crude instead of the light crude they normally receive. After all, the drone attacks impacted 5-6 per cent of global oil supplies. Currently, the key is the amount of time Saudi Arabia will take to normalize or credibly demonstrate that it can normalise production. In particular, if it takes three months for production to normalise, then we can see higher prices. The development follows the decision by Saudi Arabia and the US not to attack Iran in response to the assault on Abqaiq. It is becoming clear that neither Saudi nor US have an appetite for a war. Iran may try to capitalise on that by making moves to notch down tensions. Iranian President Rouhani claimed that the US offered to remove oil sanctions if Iran returned to the negotiating table, but this was quickly bat down when Trump dismissed the assertion. Iran, on the other hand viewed this situation as a strategic opportunity, especially when elections are round the corner in both the US and Israel, as Iran is well versed that both countries will hold crucial elections and they would avoid hitting back Iran at this time. Meanwhile, Saudi Aramco is working for its blockbuster initial public offering, with a string of banker meetings scheduled this week after it added more than a dozen junior underwriters to the deal. The other driving force was the buildup in inventories for September and a weak economic data, which continued to point at a slowdown. The other key to oil pricing risk is the US drilling, as rig count fell for the sixth week in a row, decreasing by 25 in September, but total output is now about 12.7 per cent above where it stood the same week a year ago. EIA latest weekly dataset shows production at 12.4 Mbpd, just slightly below under its all-time record high, which means that US upstream sector has 55 per cent fewer drilling rigs, but is producing nearly 40 per cent more oil than during the highs of October 2014. Elsewhere, the whole oil shipping market was thrown into disarray after the US imposed penalties on a handful of Chinese tanker firms for continuing to carry Iranian crude after sanctions waivers lapsed in May. Traders in Asia scrambled and cancelled bookings with sanctioned entities and it raised uncertainty among shippers on whether cargoes that have already been loaded onto the vessels of sanctioned firms would be allowed to deliver, or whether they would have to transfer their loads to unsanctioned tankers. Brent's six-month calendar spread surged to a backwardation of more than $5.50 per barrel on the first trading day after the attacks, the highest in six years, showing oil traders were anticipating severe shortages in the very short term. Since then the six-month spread has fallen to trade around $4 per barrel, though it is still significantly higher than the $2.70 reported before the attacks. The fact that the market is not pricing in a significant risk premium indicates that expectations of an escalation are very low. And in the event of a temporary production disruption, expectations are that this can be met by existing inventories and spare capacity. Natural gasNatural gas prices saw huge volatility. The fundamentals have worsened materially as natural gas surplus is now sitting at one of the highest levels at 2.91 Bcfd. The oversupply situation came as a result of Texas gas production, which has now risen to 23 Bcfd. The bearish balance along with a bearish weather outlook points to much more downside for natural gas prices. This is especially the case if early November weather is warmer than normal. We expect prices could easily fall to $2 range or lower. ConclusionThe potential de-escalation in the Middle East tensions and further escalation of the trade war combined to drag down oil prices. The oil market seems to have discounted the geopolitical risks. A number of factors such as uncertainty over US-China trade talks, Saudi facility repairs, rising US supply and US-Iran sanctions will guide crude oil market. Demand worries intensified after the IEA said it might cut estimates for global oil demand. Oil market is close to the same bearish state it was in just before the attacks on Saudi Arabia. However, conditions could turn bullish quickly if there are any delays in the repairs of Saudi facilities since the market has very low spare capacity at this time. Traders are also watching US-China trade talks with the two countries meeting on October 10-11.(Investors are advised to consult financial advisers before taking an investment calls based on these observations)

RBI is all set to cut rates again as fiscal measures fail to cheer

Posted:

MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India is expected to cut benchmark interest rates for the fifth time this year on Friday as recent fiscal measures to boost ailing growth seem largely inadequate and benign inflation offers room for more easing. The RBI is predicted to lower its key lending rate or the repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.15%, which would take cumulative cuts so far this year to 135 bps. Most analysts forecast one more cut of 15 bps in December. Some RBI watchers expect a larger cut this week, after it cut the repo rate but an unconventional 35 bps in August. "With current inflation remaining benign, we expect RBI to opt for a 40 bps rate cut at its policy review later this week in a bid to continue its support towards growth revival," said Yuvika Oberoi, an economist with Yes Bank in Mumbai. Asia's third-largest economy expanded by just 5% in the June quarter, its slowest pace since 2013. That has raised expectations the RBI will be forced to further downgrade its growth projection of 6.9% for the current fiscal year. However, not all economists were as aggressive with their rate cut bets, saying the central bank will likely reserve some firepower and wait to see how inflation pans out. In a bid to revive business activity, the government in September announced a sharp cut in the corporate tax rate - to 22% from 30%. But while the tax cut brings the cost of doing business in India into line with its main Asian rivals, the government's move will do little to fix a lack of spending power, economists say. "The recent volatility in crude oil prices and the fiscal measures announced by the government will have an impact on inflation in the medium-term and the fiscal deficit," said Shanti Ekambaram, president of consumer banking at Kotak Mahindra Bank. "Hence, expect the MPC to be more measured in its response with a rate cut of 20-25 bps," she added. Inflation in August accelerated to a 10-month high but remained well below the central bank's medium-term target of 4% for a 13th straight month. If the RBI delivers a 25 bps cut as expected, traders will focus on the wording and tone of the monetary policy statement for clues on further easing. Economists also said the policy transmission process could improve after the RBI mandated banks to link all fresh loans to an external benchmark like the repo rate or the rate on short-term treasury bills since the start of this month. India's banks have passed only a small portion of the RBI's cuts this year to their customers.

Tech Mahindra sees a return to days of larger deals

Posted:

PUNE: Tech Mahindra is seeing a revival in large deals, as companies move towards bigger transformation projects, India's fifth-largest IT services firm said. Tech Mahindra's chief financial officer Manoj Bhat told ET that deal sizes on an average had been moving upwards, and it was likely to continue. Last month, the company signed a multiyear contract with the US telecommunications firm AT&T, estimated to be worth about $1 billion and one of its largest deals. "There had been slowness in large deals with the communications industry lowering spends in the last few years. Now, with digital coming into play, they are thinking about how to save money and undergo a digital transformation," Bhat said.Across industry sectors, companies had started their digital transformation journeys with smaller, customer-facing functions where it would have the highest impact, but they are now expanding its scope, Bhat said.

How to Make Ravioli

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:00 PM PDT

If you love the taste of handmade ravioli but hate the high cost, make ravioli at home. Mix a simple egg dough that rests while you make a filling. Try a classic cheese filling, a hearty sausage filling, or a flavorful mushroom filling. Let the filling cool while you roll out the dough by hand or with a pasta machine. Then spoon the filling on the dough by hand or use a ravioli mold. Trim or remove the assembled ravioli and boil them for a few minutes in salty water.

[Edit]Ingredients

[Edit]Dough[1]

  • 3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon (5.5 g) salt
  • 4 eggs
  • olive oil
  • 1 egg yolk plus water, for the egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon (16. g) salt for boiling

Makes enough dough for 2 dozen ravioli

[Edit]Cheese Filling[2]

  • ricotta
  • 1 pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • Zest of 1/2 a lemon
  • 1 cup (100 g) freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, plus more for serving
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Makes 1 1/2 pounds (555 g) of filling

[Edit]Italian Sausage Filling[3]

  • bulk Italian sausage
  • 3/4 cup (22.5 g) packed fresh spinach leaves
  • 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup (81 g) ricotta cheese
  • 1 teaspoon (0.5 g) snipped fresh sage or 1/4 teaspoon (0.2 g) dried sage, crushed
  • 1/8 teaspoon (0.3 g) ground nutmeg

Makes 6 ounces (170 g) of filling

[Edit]Mushroom Filling[4]

  • 1/2 ounce (14 g) dried porcini mushrooms
  • 1 1/2 cups (110 g) fresh mushrooms, finely chopped
  • olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon (4 g) snipped fresh Italian parsley
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon (2.75 g) salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon (0.2 g) ground black pepper
  • 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup (123 g) ricotta cheese

Makes 1 cup (250 g) of filling

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Making the Ravioli Dough

  1. Mix the flour with the salt. Measure 3 cups (375 g) of all-purpose flour into the bowl of a stand mixer and add 1 teaspoon (5.5 g) of salt. Attach the dough hook to the mixer and turn the mixer on to low so the flour and salt are combined.

    • If you prefer to make the dough by hand, put the flour directly on your work surface and use your fingers to mix in the salt.
  2. Beat in 4 eggs 1 at a time. Keep the mixer running on low and add 1 egg. Once the egg is incorporated into the flour, add another egg. Continue to beat the eggs 1 at a time until all 4 eggs are mixed in. The mixture should start to form a ball.

    • If you're mixing by hand, make a well in the center of the flour. Crack all 4 eggs into it and use a fork to whisk the eggs and flour together.
  3. Mix in of olive oil on low speed. Keep the mixer running and slowly pour in the oil. Once the oil is combined, the dough will become a shaggy ball that's not completely smooth.

    • To mix in the oil by hand, drizzle the oil over the dough and mix it in with your hands.
  4. Knead the ravioli dough for about 5 minutes. Sprinkle a little flour on your work surface and transfer the dough to it. Use the palms of your hands to knead the dough. Work the dough until it becomes smooth and stretchy.

  5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and rest it for 30 minutes. Tear off a piece of plastic wrap and use it to completely wrap the ravioli dough. Leave the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.

    Make Ravioli Step 5.jpg
    • Resting the dough will relax the gluten so the pasta doesn't become tough.

[Edit]Mixing a Filling

  1. Mix ricotta with Parmesan for a cheesy filling. Put of ricotta into a bowl along with 1 pinch of freshly grated nutmeg, the zest of 1/2 a lemon, 1 cup (100 g) of freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, 1 large egg, and salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

    • Stir the mixture until the ingredients are completely combined.
  2. Brown sausage to make a meaty filling. Cook of Italian sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat until it's completely brown. Stir in 3/4 cup (22.5 g) of fresh spinach until it wilts. Then drain any grease in the pan. Mix 1 egg yolk with 1/3 cup (81 g) of ricotta cheese 1 teaspoon (0.5 g) of fresh sage or 1/4 teaspoon (0.2 g) of dried sage and 1/8 teaspoon (0.3 g) of nutmeg in another bowl. Stir it into the meat until it's combined.

    • If you're concerned that the meat is too coarse to fill the ravioli, transfer the browned sausage to a food processor. Pulse the meat until it's fine and then stir in the ricotta mixture.
  3. Sauté mushrooms for a vegetarian filling. Soak 1/2 ounce (14 g) of dried porcini mushrooms in boiling water for 15 minutes and drain them. Sauté 1 1/2 cups (110 g) of fresh mushrooms in of olive oil over medium-high heat for 5 minutes. Then chop and stir in the reconstituted porcini mushrooms, 1 tablespoon (4 g) of parsley, and 1 clove of minced garlic. Turn off the burner and stir in:

    • 1/4 teaspoon (2.75 g) of salt
    • 1/8 teaspoon (0.2 g) of ground black pepper
    • 1 lightly beaten egg yolk
    • 1/2 cup (123 g) of ricotta cheese

[Edit]Rolling and Assembling the Ravioli by Hand

  1. Cut the dough into 6 equal pieces and put 1 on your work surface. Wrap the remaining 5 pieces in plastic wrap and refrigerate them while you're rolling 1 piece of dough. Lightly sprinkle your work surface with flour and place the piece of dough in it.[5]

    • Working with 1 piece of dough at a time will prevent the dough from drying out.
  2. Dust the dough with flour and roll the dough into a rectangle. Sprinkle a little flour over the piece of dough to prevent it from sticking to the rolling pin. Roll away from the center of the dough towards the edges. Keep rolling and turning the dough until you've made a rectangle and the dough is 1/8-in (3 mm) thick.

    • Sprinkle more flour if the dough starts to stick.
    • The rectangle can be any length, but needs to be 4 in (10 cm) wide.
    • If you've accidentally rolled the dough too thin, gather it into a ball and re-roll it.
  3. Make an egg wash and brush it over the dough. Put 1 egg yolk into a small bowl and add of water. Use a fork to beat the mixture. Then dip a pastry brush in the egg wash and brush the entire surface of the dough with the wash.

    • Keep in mind that you won't use all of the egg wash for this 1 piece of dough.
    • The egg wash will help the pasta bind together and will help the filling stick to the dough.
  4. Spoon 1 tablespoon (15 g) of filling 2 in (5 cm) apart on the dough. Spoon or pipe your choice of filling lengthwise on the rectangle of dough. Leave 2 in (5 cm) of space between each spoonful of filling so you have room to form and cut individual ravioli. Work along 1 edge of the rectangle.

    • Use cooled filling so it doesn't begin to heat the dough.
  5. Fold the dough over lengthwise to cover the filling. Bring the unfilled side of the rectangle over and onto the side with the filling. The rectangle should be as long as you made it, but now it will be about 2 in (5 cm) wide.

  6. Press the air from the ravioli and cut them out. Use your index and middle finger to gently press down around each mound of filling. This will push out air and seal the pasta dough. Then use a knife, pasta crimper, cookie cutter, or overturned glass to cut out each ravioli.

    • If you're using a knife, cut the ravioli in any shape you like. For example, make squares, circles, or triangles.
  7. Roll out and assemble the remaining dough with filling. Set aside the assembled ravioli and dust them with a little cornmeal to keep them from sticking together. Then get out another piece of dough and put it on your floured work surface. Continue to roll, fill, and cut all of the reserved dough.

    • Check each ravioli to ensure that all of the edges are sealed. This will prevent filling from escaping as the ravioli boil.
    • Cover the assembled ravioli with a towel to prevent them from drying out while you make the rest of the ravioli.

[Edit]Using Equipment to Roll and Assemble the Ravioli

  1. Cut the dough into 4 equal pieces and put 1 on your work surface. Wrap the remaining 3 pieces in plastic wrap and refrigerate them while you're rolling 1 piece of dough through the pasta machine.

    • Working with only 1 piece of dough at a time will prevent the dough from drying out.
  2. Press the dough into a rectangle and run it through the machine. Make the rectangle as wide as your pasta machine rollers are. Then adjust your machine so it's at its widest setting. Guide and roll the dough through the machine.

    • Use the palm of your hand to help the pasta roll out of the machine.
  3. Roll the dough through the machine until it's 1/8-in (3 mm) thick. Continue to guide the dough into the machine's rollers and pass the dough through until it's thin enough to see your palm through.

    • You'll probably have to roll the dough through your machine 2 to 3 times.
  4. Lay a sheet of rolled dough over the metal ravioli maker. Place the metal base of your ravioli maker on your work surface. Drape the rolled sheet of pasta dough over the base.

    • You shouldn't be able to see the metal base once you've placed the pasta over it.
    • Some ravioli makers are round, square, or rectangular.
  5. Press the plastic mold down into the dough. If your pasta maker came with a plastic piece that's the size of the mold, place it directly on the sheet of pasta. Push down gently so the dough is pressed down a little. If your machine doesn't have the mold, use your thumb to make a slight indention on each ravioli spot.

    • The depressions in the dough will make it easier to fill the ravioli.
    • If you push too hard and the dough tears, gather the dough into a ball and run it through the pasta machine again.
  6. Spoon 1 tablespoon (15 g) of filling in each indentation and tap the mold. Spoon or pipe your choice of cooled filling in each of the depressions. Ensure that you don't spread the filling outside of the indentation or the filling will leak as the ravioli cook. Gently tap the mold down on the work surface.

    • Tapping the mold will release air bubbles that are trapped.
  7. Lay rolled pasta dough over the mold and press down gently. Use another sheet of pasta dough and place it over the dough with the filling. Press down gently with the palm of your hand to remove air that's trapped between the sheets of dough.

    • Run a rolling pin over the dough so the filled ravioli are cut from the mold.
  8. Turn the mold over to release the formed ravioli. Flip the mold over so the ravioli fall away from the mold. If some stick to the mold, use your fingers to peel them off. You can also try tapping the mold.

    • Dust the assembled ravioli with a little cornmeal and cover them with a towel. Covering them will prevent the ravioli from drying out while you make the rest of the ravioli.

[Edit]Cooking the Ravioli

  1. Bring a large pot of water to boil over high heat. Pour of cold water into a 5 to 6-quart (4.7 to 5.6-liter) pot. Put the lid on the pot and turn the burner to high heat.

    Make Ravioli Step 24.jpg
    • The water should come to a vigorous bubble.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon (16 g) of salt to the water along with the ravioli. Stir the salt so it dissolves and lower the ravioli into the boiling water.

    • Avoid dumping the ravioli into the boiling water because it will splash out of the pot.
  3. Boil the ravioli for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir the ravioli once or twice as they boil. They will float to the top of the pot once they've finished cooking.

    Make Ravioli Step 26.jpg
    • If you overcook the ravioli, they'll start to open up or disintegrate in the water.
  4. Remove and serve the cooked ravioli. Turn off the burner and use a slotted spoon to scoop the ravioli out of the pot. Transfer the ravioli to a skillet with your favorite warm sauce or place them on individual serving plates. Drizzle the ravioli with chipped herbs and a drizzle of olive oil if desired.

    • Refrigerate leftover ravioli in an airtight container for up to 3 to 5 days.

[Edit]Ravioli Filling and Sauce Suggestions

[Edit]Tips

  • If you're going to freeze unused ravioli, place them about a 1/2 inch apart on a sheet, dust with flour to prevent sticking, and then freeze. Once frozen, you can transfer the raviolis into a smaller container. Put the frozen ravioli in an airtight container and freeze it for up to 1 month.

How to Hang a Bike in a Garage

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Hanging a bike or bikes in your garage is an excellent way to free up some space. It is also easier to do than it might seem. You can hang a bike from your garage's ceiling with either ceiling hooks or a more elaborate rope and pulley system made specifically for bikes. Whichever method you choose, you'll be able to have your bikes hanging up in no time!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Hanging with Ceiling Hooks

  1. Locate a ceiling joist. Standing on a ladder or other stable, raised surface, knock on your garage's ceiling to find a ceiling joist. If you knock and hear a hollow sound, there is no joist there. If you hear a solid sound, however, you've found a joist. You can also use a stud finder to find a ceiling joist.[1]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 01.jpg
    • If you're unsure whether you've found a ceiling joist, you can nail a small nail into what you think is a joist. If the nail encounters a lot of resistance, you've found a joist.
    • Always use caution when standing on something.
  2. Drill a small pilot hole where you want the first hook. The pilot hole should be slightly smaller than the threads on the screw hooks. You should drill the pilot hole where you want one of the wheel centers to be.[2]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 02.jpg
    • Use a cordless electric drill fitted with a drill bit to drill the pilot hole.
    • Always be careful to use a drill safely.
    • When drilling into the ceiling, wear safety glasses to prevent debris from falling into your eyes.
  3. Measure the distance between the two wheels' centers. Once you've drilled your first pilot hole, use a tape measure to measure the distance from one wheel center to the other. Be sure to be as precise as possible.[3]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 03.jpg
    • Measure more than once to make sure you have an accurate measurement.
  4. Drill the second pilot hole in the same ceiling joist. Now that you've measured the distance between the wheel centers, drill your second pilot hole that same distance from the first pilot hole in the same ceiling joist. In other words, the distance from the second pilot hole to the first should be the same as the distance from the center of the back wheel of your bike to the center of its front wheel.[4]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 04.jpg
    • For an adult bike, the length should be somewhere in the range of .
  5. Screw heavy duty, vinyl-coated J-shaped hooks into the pilot holes. Once you've drilled both of your pilot holes into the ceiling joist, screw in the heavy duty, vinyl (or rubber) coated hooks. Use a wrench to make sure the hooks are securely twisted into the joist.[5]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 05.jpg
    • These heavy-duty hooks are available at most home improvement stores.
    • Purchasing hooks with plastic coating is important because the coating will prevent the hook from scratching your bicycle.

[Edit]Using a Rope and Pulley System

  1. Locate a joist in your ceiling. Begin by knocking on your garage ceiling around where you'd like to hang your bike. Move your fist side to side as you knock. If you hear a hollow sound, there is no joist there. A solid sound, however, indicates that you've found a joist.[6]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 06.jpg
    • If you are going to be standing on a ladder for this step, ask a family member or friend to hold it steady for you.
    • You can also use a stud finder to find a joist in the ceiling.
  2. Use an impact driver to screw the first pulley bracket into the ceiling. Once you've found a joist, use a cordless drill to drill a pilot hole in the middle of the joist. Drill the hole where you want to put one end of one of your pulley brackets. Then screw the first pulley bracket into the ceiling.[7]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 07.jpg
    • Use the screws and any other materials that come with the rope and pulley system.
    • You can find a bicycle-specific rope and pulley system at most home improvement stores and bicycle shops.
    • The pulley bracket should run parallel to the joist.
  3. Measure the distance between your bike's seat and handlebars. Once you've screwed your first pulley bracket into the ceiling, use a tape measure to measure the length from the back of your bike's seat to the front of the handlebars.[8]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 08.jpg
    • It is a good idea to measure more than once, just to make sure you have an accurate measurement.
  4. Position the second pulley bracket on the same ceiling joist. Make sure the distance from the middle of the first bracket to the middle of the second bracket is the same as the distance from the back of your bike's seat to the handlebars. Once the second bracket is in position, drill pilot holes where the screws will go.[9]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 09.jpg
    • The two pulley brackets should run parallel to the ceiling joist to which they're attached and together should form a straight line.
  5. Thread the rope through the hole in the second bracket. Before screwing your second bracket into the ceiling, thread the rope through the proper hole in the bracket. Every rope and pulley system is slightly different, so follow the manufacturer's directions that were included with your specific rope and pulley system.[10]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 10.jpg
    • When tying a knot in the rope, a standard figure-eight knot will work fine.
  6. Mount the second pulley bracket onto the ceiling joist. Use an impact driver to screw the second bracket into the ceiling in the same way you screwed in the first bracket. Pull on the bracket to make sure it is secure.[11]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 11.jpg
  7. Thread the rope through the pulleys. Now that your two pulley brackets are fastened to the ceiling, it is time to thread the rope through the pulley brackets and hooks that will hoist up your bike. Every pulley system is different, so closely follow the manufacturer's directions included with the specific model you're using.[12]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 12.jpg
    • Screw a cleat into a nearby wall stud, so you'll have a place to tie up the loose end of the rope and keep it out of your way.
    • Be careful not to tangle up the rope. Any knots in the rope will interfere with the pulley system.
  8. Raise your bike to the ceiling with the rope and pulley system. Put one of the hooks under the seat and the other under the handlebars. Then, pull on the rope to raise the bike up to the pulley brackets. Once the bike is up, let go of the rope slowly, and tie it up on a cleat on a nearby wall.[13]
Hang a Bike in a Garage Step 13.jpg
    • An anti-slip mechanism on the pulley bracket will prevent the bike from falling when you let go of the rope.

[Edit]Things You'll Need

  1. Cordless drill
  2. Cordless impact driver
  3. Ladder
  4. Tape measure
  5. Rope and pulley system for a bike (for Method 1)
  6. Heavy-duty, plastic coated hooks (for Method 2)

How to Learn to Play Electric Guitar

Posted: 02 Oct 2019 01:00 AM PDT

The electric guitar is one of the most commonly played instruments in rock music today. Electric guitars feature in almost every rock genre, from pop to punk to death metal. If you're looking to play guitar but don't have any musical experience, it may seem a little intimidating. However, by starting out with the basics, learning foundational chords, and practicing every day, you can learn to play the electric guitar in no time!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Holding and Strumming the Guitar

  1. Balance the body of the guitar on top of your dominant thigh to hold it. In a seated position, move your dominant leg slightly forward and bend your knee to place your foot flat on the floor. Place the guitar on your thigh, orienting it so that the strings are facing away from you and the head (the small tip of the guitar) is pointing in the opposite direction from your dominant side.[1]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 1 Version 4.jpg
    • Keep the guitar upright and hold the back of it close enough to you that it touches your stomach and chest while resting on your thigh.
    • Use your non-dominant hand to hold the neck of the guitar. The neck is the long piece of wood that connects the head of the guitar to the body.
    • If you have trouble balancing the guitar, attach a strap to the guitar and place it over your shoulder to make it easier to keep the guitar upright.
  2. Grip the neck using your thumb and forefinger. Form a "V" shape with the thumb and forefinger of your non-dominant hand and place the guitar neck in that "V" to stabilize it. When you want to play the guitar, press your thumb flat against the back of the neck and use your fingertips to press down on the strings.[2]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 2 Version 3.jpg
    • Avoid hooking your thumb over the top of the neck, even if it feels more natural to grip the guitar this way; doing this will cause you to grip the guitar with too much force and will limit the reach of your fretting fingers.
    • The flat side of the neck is called the fretboard because it's inlaid with metal frets that indicate where to put your fingers to play specific notes.
  3. Memorize the names and numbers for the different strings of the guitar. In order from thickest to thinnest, the strings of the guitar are named E, A, D, G, B, and e. The strings are also numbered from thinnest to thickest so that the e string is also called the 1st string and the E string is called the 6th string.[3]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • The strings descend in pitch from 1st string to 6th string, so the E string is the lowest in pitch, while the e string is the highest.
    • It's important to remember the names and numbers of your guitar strings to be able to read tabs and talk about specific notes.
    • Try using a mnemonic device to remember the guitar strings, such as "Eddie And Debbie Got Brown eggs."
  4. Hold your pick with a firm but comfortable grip. A pick is a small piece of plastic used to strum the guitar or play individual notes. To hold the pick, grip it between the thumb and index finger on your strumming hand and orient it so that it's perpendicular to your fist. Your grip should be firm enough to hold the pick in place while you're playing, but not so tight that it's uncomfortable.[4]

    • Your thumb and finger should cover about ⅔ of the pick, leaving a little more than ⅓ of it sticking out of your hand.
    • You don't necessarily have to use a pick to play the electric guitar, but you should definitely hold the pick in a comfortable and proper way if you use it.
  5. Play the guitar without fretting any strings to practice your strumming. Use your strumming hand to strum all 6 strings at the same time in a downward stroke and do this until it feels natural. Once you're comfortable with downstroke strumming, practice strumming all 6 with an upward stroke as well.[5]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 5 Version 3.jpg
    • If you don't want to be too loud while practicing your strumming, you can simply "mute" the strings by lightly touching them with your fretting hand so that no sound is produced when you play.
    • Strum the guitar by moving your wrist up and down rather than by moving your whole arm up and down. This will make your strumming more energy efficient and reduce your risk of injury in the long run.
    • Once you've gotten the hang of performing downstrokes and upstrokes individually, try strumming the guitar in a downstroke-upstroke-downstroke-upstroke pattern until you've gotten the feel of it.
  6. Practice strumming and fretting the strings at the same time. To play a note on the guitar, press your finger down between the frets on the fretboard; this is called "fretting the strings." While pressing down 1 or more strings with your fretting hand, strum the guitar with your other hand. This will help you get used to doing 2 separate things with your hands at the same time.[6]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • Don't press down on the frets themselves, as this will produce a buzzing sound instead of the note you were trying to play.
    • Only press down on the strings as hard as is needed to produce a clean note. If you press down too lightly, the string will buzz. However, pressing down too hard will only put more strain than necessary on your fingers.
    • Don't worry about playing chords yet; just focus on getting the basic movements down first!
  7. Dip your fingertips in ice water or rubbing alcohol to manage finger pain. Although your fingers will definitely be sore when you're first starting out, this pain will go away after enough time. Use ice water or rubbing alcohol treatments to minimize finger pain when you experience it. Remind yourself that the pain is only temporary to avoid letting it discourage you from continuing to play guitar.[7]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 7 Version 3.jpg
    • Your fingertips will eventually grow calluses that make playing guitar a lot less painful. Calluses usually take at least a month or 2 to grow, so don't feel discouraged if they don't grow immediately!
    • Apply rubbing alcohol to your fingers 3 times a day for a week to encourage calluses to grow faster.

[Edit]Mastering Guitar Chords

  1. Start out by learning to play a simple first position chord. A chord is a harmonic group made up of 3 or more individual notes. First position chords, such as the C chord, A chord, and G chord, are the easiest to play, so one of these should be the first chord you learn.[8]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 8 Version 3.jpg
    • Note that when you play certain chords, you don't strum all 6 of the guitar strings. For example, when you play the C chord, you only play the bottom 5 strings and ignore the E string entirely.
    • Practice the correct finger placement on the fretboard for the chord first. Once you're comfortable pressing down on the right notes, work on strumming and fretting at the same time.
  2. Learn how to play 3 more simple chords after you've mastered 1. Almost any song you hope to play on the electric guitar will involve at least 4 different chords, so you'll need to master more than just 1 to play guitar well. Work on learning the other first position chords before tackling anything more complicated.[9]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 9 Version 3.jpg
    • For example, if the first chord you learned to play was the C chord, the next 2 you learn to play should probably be the D chord and the G chord.
    • Follow the same process of learning the correct finger placement on the fretboard first, then practicing strumming the guitar while pressing down on the right notes.
  3. Practice switching from 1 chord to another. Place your fingers in position for 1 chord, then move them into position for another chord. Repeat this process until you can quickly switch between the 2 chords. Then, add a third chord into the mix and continue switching your finger placement as quickly as you can.[10]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 10 Version 3.jpg
    • You'll eventually get to a place where you can quickly switch from 1 chord to another without even thinking about it (which is exactly what you need to do to play guitar!).
  4. Add increasingly complex chords to your repertoire. Once you've learned the rest of the simple guitar chords, such as the D and E chords, the next thing to do is learn how to play barre chords. Barre chords are played by using your index finger to press down all the notes on a single fret. Although they're more challenging, barre chords are very important for playing a wide variety of songs.[11]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 11.jpg
    • Some of the most important barre chords to learn how to play are the E major chord, E minor chord, A major chord, and A minor chord.
    • Once you're comfortable with playing 1 or more barre chords, practice switching between them and moving from a barre chord to a simple chord on the fretboard.

[Edit]Practicing and Sticking to a Schedule

  1. Create a daily practice schedule and stick to it. Learning to play the guitar well is something that requires dedication. However, you don't have to devote all of your time to practice. Simply set aside 15-30 minutes every day to practice playing guitar and commit to sticking to this schedule no matter what.[12]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 12.jpg
    • Use this practice time to work on the chords you already know and add new chords to the mix. Once you know enough chords, try learning to play a whole song!
    • Some examples of easy guitar songs for beginners include the Beatles' "Love Me Do," Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary," and Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline."
  2. Use music books to learn new chords and techniques. If you're just looking for new chords to learn, you can buy books that include the guitar chords for a lot of famous and popular songs at nearly any music store or book retailer. Many music books will also include helpful tips and techniques for playing the guitar that you may not have encountered in practicing on your own.[13]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 13.jpg
    • Some books will also include helpful multimedia tools, such as CDs, that make learning new techniques on the guitar even easier.
  3. Visit music websites to find tabs and tutorials for songs. Websites like ultimate-guitar.com and ultimate-tabs.com have a large database of tabs (simplified forms of musical notation) that tell you how to play different songs on the guitar. For extra help, there are also plenty of video tutorials on websites like YouTube where more experienced guitar players offer tips on how to play songs from start to finish.
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 14.jpg
    • Guitar tabs are an easier way to read chords if you can't read traditional sheet music. Tabs use 6 horizontal lines to represent the guitar strings and numbers on those lines to indicate which frets you need to press down to play the chord.
    • You can visit ultimate-guitar.com at this URL: https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/. You can visit ultimate-tabs.com at this URL: https://www.ultimate-tabs.com/
  4. Set a realistic goal to achieve with your practicing each week. For instance, aim to learn 2-3 new chords each week or be able to switch between 2 chords flawlessly. Whatever goal you set, make sure it's specific and achievable. Your goal should also be measurable so that you know when you've achieved it.[14]
Learn to Play Electric Guitar Step 15.jpg
    • For example, if your goal is to learn 2 new chords, you can easily judge whether or not you've learned 2 new chords after 7 days. However, if you set a goal like "practice new chords," it's harder to tell whether you've actually achieved this goal by the end of the week.

[Edit]Tips

  • There are a few components of electric guitars that you won't find on acoustic guitars, including the volume knobs, tremolo, and output jack. The volume knobs are small dials on the body of an electric guitar that allow you to turn the volume of your guitar up and down. The tremolo or "whammy bar" is used to raise and lower the pitch of a note after you've played it. The output jack is where you connect your electric guitar to an amplifier.
  • Make sure your guitar is properly tuned before you start playing! You can use an electric guitar tuner or a piano to tune your electric guitar.
  • If you have trouble keeping rhythm with your strumming, playing with a metronome is a good way to practice strumming to a particular tempo.

[Edit]Warnings

  • If you're just starting out and you live in close proximity to other people, avoid playing your guitar too loudly, as this might annoy your roommates or neighbors. Consider using headphones instead of an amplifier when practicing somewhere other people can hear you.

How to Maintain a Car

Posted: 01 Oct 2019 05:00 PM PDT

Doing the right kinds of maintenance on your car will not only help it to hold its value, it will also help to keep it safe and reliable. Regular car maintenance involves a wide variety of projects that may not all be easy to do at home. However, by understanding what needs to be done to maintain your car, you can be better equipped to talk to your local service center about doing the work your car needs.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Managing Your Car's Fluids and Filters

  1. Look for application-specific needs in your owner's manual. While many aspects of routine maintenance on your care are universal, there are some that may be specific to your car's particular make, model, or year. Check in the owner's manual for scheduled maintenance requirements to ensure you don't miss any important ones.[1]
    Maintain a Car Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Some cars need to have their timing belts replaced at specific mileage intervals. Otherwise, you risk doing damage to your cylinder head.
    • If you don't have an owner's manual, refer to the manufacturer's website for further guidance.
  2. Check the fluid reservoirs in the engine bay and add more fluid when needed. Your engine bay has plastic reservoirs for brake fluid, engine coolant, windshield washer fluid, and power steering fluid. The lower line on the reservoir is the "fill" point. Any time you see the fluid drop below that line, add more until it's back up to the higher line, which is the "full" point.[2]
    Maintain a Car Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Some vehicles have specific requirements for the type of coolant or brake fluid you use. Refer to your owner's manual or an application specific repair manual to see what kind is right for your specific car.
    • To fill each reservoir, unscrew the cap and pour the fluid in until it reaches the "full" point as indicated on the side. Then screw the cap back on.
  3. Change your oil every 3,000 miles. Once you hit the 3,000-mile mark, jack up the car and slide a container beneath the oil pan. Remove the drain bolt (the only bolt running into the oil pan) and allow the oil to drain out into the container. Then locate the oil filter and remove it it. Put a bit of oil on your finger and run it along the seal of the new filter, then screw it in place. Return the drain bolt to the oil pan once it has finished draining.[3]
    Maintain a Car Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Refill the engine with the correct amount and type of oil once the new filter is in place and you have reinserted the drain plug.
    • Different vehicles have different oil capacities and requirements. Refer to your owner's manual or an application specific repair manual to find out what type and amount of oil you need for your car.
  4. Swap out your air filter every year. The air filter prevents sand and debris from getting into your engine from outside. Most filters need to be replaced annually, though some aftermarket filters can be cleaned instead of replaced. Find the airbox at the end of the intake pipe that leads into the top of the engine. Release the 2 to 4 clips holding it closed and open the top to access the air filter.[4]
    Maintain a Car Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • The filter just sits inside the air box. Remove it with your hand and set the new one in its place.
    • Close the air box again and use the clips to secure the lid.
  5. Use the right octane fuel for your engine. The octane rating of fuel is a measurement of the fuel's stability under pressure. High compression or forced induction engines (turbocharged or supercharged engines) require a higher octane fuel than most other vehicles. Using a lower octane fuel could cause damage to the engine and create real problems in the future.[5]
    Maintain a Car Step 5.jpg
    • Most cars that require "premium" fuel will say so on the instrument cluster of the dashboard and over the fuel filler cap.
    • Check your owner's manual or the manufacturer's website if you're still unsure what octane level of fuel your vehicle needs.
  6. Install a new fuel filter every 40,000 miles. The fuel filter blocks the passage of dirt and sediment from your fuel tank to the engine itself. To replace the filter, locate it along the fuel line running from the gas tank to the front of the car. It will look like a cylinder with a nozzle coming out of the front and back. Place a container beneath it to catch any leaking fuel, then use a flat head screwdriver to pop off the clips holding the fuel lines on the nozzles.[6]
    Maintain a Car Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Loosen the bracket holding the old fuel filter in place and slide it out.
    • Slide the new one into the bracket and tighten it down. Attach the fuel lines to each nozzle and reinsert the clips to hold them in place.
    • If you break the clips, you can buy new ones at your local hardware store.
  7. Drain and flush your coolant system once a year. Jack up the vehicle and place a container beneath the radiator's drain plug. Open the drain plug and allow all of the coolant to pour out. Then close the drain plug again. Open the radiator cap at the top of the radiator and fill it with water, then close the cap and drain it again. Then refill the radiator with the right coolant for your vehicle.[7]
    Maintain a Car Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Most vehicles require a 50/50 water and coolant mixture. You can usually purchase pre-mixed coolant at your local auto parts store.
    • Check your owner's manual or a vehicle specific repair manual to see how much coolant to add and what specific type of coolant your car needs.
  8. Clean your radiator with bug remover when it gets dirty. Spray radiator bug remover onto the radiator and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Don't touch or scrub the radiator itself. Touching it may bend the blades or result in injury since they are sharp. Instead, allow the bug remover to set for around 2 minutes and then spray it off with a hose.[8]
    Maintain a Car Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Read the instructions on the bug remover you purchase to make sure you use it properly.

[Edit]Taking Care of Brakes, Belts, and Hoses

  1. Replace your brake pads every 20,000 miles. Failing brakes can be extremely dangerous. If you think your brakes may be failing, have them serviced immediately. To do it yourself, loosen the car's lug nuts and then jack the vehicle up. Support the car with jack stands then remove the lug nuts the rest of the way. Locate the brake caliper (it looks like a vice clamped onto the circular rotor) and remove the 2 bolts that hold it in place. Slide it off the rotor and use a C-clamp to compress the piston back into the caliper.[9]
    Maintain a Car Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • At that point, you can install the new brake pads into the caliper by sliding them into place where the old ones were.
    • Remove the C-clamp, place the caliper back on the rotor, then reinsert the 2 bolts that hold it in place.
    • Repeat that process on the other side, then put the wheels back on and lower the car.
  2. Change out worn or damaged belts. Check your belts for signs of cracking or advanced wear like rub marks. Then, check the belt's tension to ensure it hasn't stretched out. If you spot signs of damage or the belt doesn't have enough tension, replace it. Insert a breaker bar into the opening on the auto-tensioner pulley and turn it counterclockwise if your car is equipped with one, otherwise, loosen the 2 bolts holding the alternator on the bracket to relieve the tension on the belt. Slide it off of all the pulleys then put the new on one in its place.[10]
    Maintain a Car Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • Make sure to follow the diagram on the sticker in your engine bay (or in an application-specific repair manual) when running the new belt through the pulleys.
    • Use the breaker bar on the auto tensioner or apply pressure to the alternator to add tension to the belt, then release the tensioner pulley or tighten the alternator bolts in place to keep the belt tight.
  3. Replace cracked or damaged hoses. With the hood open, look over the rubber hoses in the engine bay for any signs of damage. If you spot a damaged hose, place a drain pan beneath it and loosen the hose clamps with pliers or a screwdriver. Remove the hose and take it to your local auto parts store to get a replacement one of the correct length and interior diameter.[11]
    Maintain a Car Step 11.jpg
    • Install the new house in place of the old one and re-tighten the hose clamps.
    • Add a 50/50 water and coolant mixture to the coolant reservoir until it reaches the full line again when you're done.

[Edit]Maintaining the Electrical System

  1. Clean your battery contacts once a year. The connection for your battery can sometimes get corroded or covered in grime, making it harder for the electrical current to flow through the car's system. Use the correct sized wrench or socket and ratchet to loosen the bolt holding the negative (-) cable on the battery, then slide the cable off. Then do the same with the positive (+) cable. Add 1 tablespoon (13.8 g) of baking soda to of water, then dip a steel toothbrush in the mixture.[12]
    Maintain a Car Step 12.jpg
    • Use the brush and mixture to clean all corrosion and grime off of the battery posts and the metal connections on the cables.
    • Wipe the battery posts clean with a damp rag, then connect the positive cable to the battery again.
    • Reconnect the negative cable last.
  2. Test your lights and replace any bulbs that have blown out. Ask a friend to stand in front of your car while you turn on your headlight low beams and then high beams. Then test the left and right turn signals. Next, ask your friend to move to the back of the car while you test your brake lights and each turn signal once again.[13]
    Maintain a Car Step 13.jpg
    • You can access blown out headlight bulbs from behind the headlight housing inside the engine bay. Tail lights are usually accessed through the inside of the trunk.
    • Unplug the wiring pigtail going into your headlight or taillight, then twist the bulb housing counterclockwise and pull it backward to remove it. Replace the bulb and reinsert it.
    • If you can't figure out how to replace a bulb that's gone out, refer to the vehicle's owner's manual or an application-specific repair manual for more guidance.
  3. Check and replace fuses as they blow out. If some lights go out in the interior of your car, chances are good that it's a blown fuse. Locate the 2 fuse boxes in your car. One is usually near your left knee when sitting in the driver's seat and the other is often found inside the engine bay. Use the diagram on the fuse box lids to find the right fuse for the lights that went out, then remove that fuse and replace it with one rated for the same electrical amperage.[14]
    Maintain a Car Step 14.jpg
    • The number of amps a fuse can withstand is written on the fuse itself. Make sure the new fuse has the same number written on it as the blown one you're replacing.
    • If you can't locate your fuse boxes or they don't have the diagram, refer to the owner's manual or an application specific repair manual to find the fuse that's gone out.
  4. Replace your spark plugs every 30,000 miles. Open the hood and locate the spark plug wires running into the top of the engine. Grip the closest wire to you low at its base and pull it up to unplug it from the spark plug. Use a spark plug socket and a ratchet to unscrew the spark plug and pull it up and out of the engine.[15]
    Maintain a Car Step 15.jpg
    • Gap the new spark plug using a spark plug gapping tool. You'll find the correct gap measurement in the vehicle's owner's manual or an application specific repair manual.
    • Place the new plug in the spark plug socket and insert it into the engine. Insert it first by hand and then tighten it with a ratchet.
    • Reconnect the spark plug wire and repeat the process for each cylinder.
  5. Use an OBD-II scanner to check and clear error codes. If your check engine light comes on, turn the vehicle off and plug an OBD-II scanner into the rounded trapezoid-shaped port located beneath the steering wheel. Turn the key in the ignition to "accessory" and turn on the code scanner to see what set off the check engine light.[16]
    Maintain a Car Step 16.jpg
    • Write down the code if the code scanner doesn't give you an English description. You can look the code up on the manufacturer's website or in an application-specific repair manual.
    • Use any error codes you find to help you determine if there is something wrong with your vehicle that may need repairs.
    • Once you make repairs, use the code scanner to clear the error codes and turn off the check engine light.
    • You can purchase OBD-II scanners at your local auto parts store, but they can often scan your car for your for free.

[Edit]Handling Exterior Maintenance

  1. Check your tire pressure and add air when needed. Look at the side of your tire and find where it says, "max pressure" followed by a number and the letters "PSI." Then, unscrew the cap on the tire and press a tire gauge onto the nozzle to see what the pressure inside the tire actually is. If it's lower than a few PSI (pounds per square inch) below the maximum rating, use an air compressor to add air to the tire until it's within a few PSI of the max.[17]
    Maintain a Car Step 17.jpg
    • Many tire air machines at gas stations have a tire gauge built into them.
    • Low tire pressure can reduce your fuel mileage and cause your tires to wear out prematurely.
  2. Use a penny to check the tread on your tires for wear. You can use a penny to assess the level of tread left on your tires quickly. Turn the penny upside down and hold it so you can clearly see Lincoln's head. Insert the penny into the groove between the tire treads and see how much of Lincoln's head you can still see clearly.[18]
    Maintain a Car Step 18.jpg
    • If you can see Lincoln's hair, you will need new tires soon.
    • If you can see Lincoln's entire head, you need new tires immediately.
  3. Rotate your tires every 5,000 miles. Make sure the tread on your tires wear evenly by swapping them on the car periodically. Jack the car up and support its weight with jack stands, then take the wheel and tire from the rear of the car and install on the front. Install what was the front wheel onto the rear. Then do the same on the other side.[19]
    Maintain a Car Step 19.jpg
    • Front and rear tires wear differently because the front tires do most of the braking and turning.
    • With some tires, you can swap them from side to side as well.
    • If your tires have directional arrows on the sideway, keep those arrows pointed toward the front of the car. Do not swap the tires to the other side.
  4. Swap out your windshield wipers when they start to streak. Windshield wipers are an important piece of safety gear for your car. When they begin to make streaks on your windshield, it means they need to be replaced. On most cars, you can grab the wiper and pull it out away from the windshield. Then turn the wiper so it is perpendicular to the wiper arm and slide it down off the arm's hook to remove it.[20]
    Maintain a Car Step 20.jpg
    • Slide the new wiper onto the hook, then rotate it so it is parallel with the wiper arm.
    • If you can't figure out how to remove the wiper blade, refer to your owner's manual or an application-specific repair manual.
  5. Wax your car to protect the paint twice per year. The paint on your car does more than just keep it looking nice. It also prevents rusting that can lead to expensive repairs. Wash your car and then apply a fresh layer of wax to the paint every 6 months to give it a bit of added protection and stave off any potential rusting that could develop.[21]
    Maintain a Car Step 21.jpg
    • First wash the car with automotive soap and rinse it thoroughly. Allow it to dry or dry it with towels.
    • Apply the wax to the car's paint using the provided applicator in a swirling motion, then wait for it to dry completely.
    • Buff the wax off using a clean chamois cloth.

[Edit]Tips

  • Many service centers and auto mechanics will offer "tune-ups." These aren't always worth it. Ask for an itemized list of what work each shop will do during their tune-ups.
  • Most of these items can be done at home with common hand tools, or by your neighborhood auto service or auto repair facility.
