Everything that happened at Bethesda's acceptable E3 2017 press conference

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:39 PM PDT

That was quick!

Bethesda's Pete Hines came out on stage, said "here's some stuff we have," they showed that stuff, and they stepped off in roughly 35 minutes.

We got to see a whole lot of familiar IPs, all old IPs, in fact, which doesn't really get my heart racing like some past E3s have. There's another Doom thing, as well as Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Evil Within (which is a franchise now), Quake, Dishonored, and Wolfenstein things. They all look cool, but Bethesda has been known to play it relatively safe.

Bethesda has announced Dishonored: Death of the Outsider for PS4, Xbox One and PC

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:33 PM PDT

During Bethesda's E3 presentation, the publisher announced that Arkane Studios is currently working on a standalone entry in the Dishonored series titled Dishonored: Death of the Outsider

The game will star both Daud and Billie Lurk from prior instalments in the Dishonored series -- most notably, the Knife of Dunwall expansion for the first game -- as they enter the underbelly of Karnaca to embark on a mission to attempt to assassinate the Outsider; the being responsible for bestowing the series' main characters with their supernatural abilities.

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider will be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on the 15th of September.

Quake Champions' E3 trailer features new maps and a familiar face

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:30 PM PDT

After some VR, console ports, and card games, Bethesda spent some time at its E3 press conference detailing some updates on Quake Champions

Quake Champions looks more or less like the fast-paced shooter it's always been, with a few tweaks for the "eSports era." The E3 trailer focused heavily on the competitive multiplayer side of things, including information about the upcoming Quake World Championships on August 26 during this year's Quakecon, where players will battle for a prize of $1,000,000.

The Evil Within 2 is real, coming Friday the 13th, this October

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:25 PM PDT

Detective Sebastian Castellanos is back in The Evil Within 2, which is now real, and dropping on Friday the 13th this October. It'll hit the PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms, and tasks Castellanos with saving his daughter in a "once-idyllic town."

Bethesda didn't explicitly say it during the stream, but it seems like horror master Shinji Mikami is back in some capacity for the sequel.

Skyrim on Switch gets amiibo support, includes Link

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:22 PM PDT

While not much was shown off of Skyrim for the Switch, Bethesda dropped a bomb shell that amiibo support will be included. While we're not sure of the full extent of which amiibo will be supported, at least the archer Link from Breath of the Wild will unlock a costume, weapons and even a Zelda themed chest. The Switch port will also include motion controls and comes with all of the expansions for the game.

I'm not sure if I care enough about Skyrim to buy another version of it, but putting in some Nintendo themed extras is a nice way to show that Bethesda finally cares about the Big N. Hopefully we'll learn more about whether this is the Special Edition (which included mod support) or not from the show floor.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends getting Skyrim expansion, Heroes of Skyrim

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:22 PM PDT

The Elder Scrolls: Legends, the card game featuring characters from The Elder Scrolls series, will update with new arenas, tournaments, a Dark Brotherhood story mode, and an Android and iOS version coming next month. A Skyrim focused expansion, Heroes of Skyrim June 29.

Bethesda hasn't announced what exactly will be included with the Skyrim expansion, but I'm pretty sure it's their hope to chip away a little from the Hearthstone throne.

Bethesda reveals two new add-ons for Elder Scrolls Online

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:21 PM PDT

Now that The Elder Scrolls Online has gone to Morrowind, it's time for the next adventure. Or, at least, to learn about it. One of the first items in Bethesda's E3 press conference was a simple reveal of two new TESO add-ons.

As outlined in the description of the YouTube video that's embedded above, TESO has Horns of the Reach and Clockwork City in the works. And, that's all that we really know. There's a chance it'll come up again later tonight, but not really. This is probably a news story to be better told at a future date.

Until then, enjoy these influencers "reacting" to TESO gameplay.

Fallout 4 will be playable in VR this October

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:20 PM PDT

Bethesda dove right into its E3 2017 press conference with back-to-back virtual reality games. First there was Doom VFR, which, hell yes. That can and should be good. Next, we got a peek at Fallout 4 VR, due out this October on PC for HTC Vive.

"Featuring new combat, crafting and building systems fully reimagined for VR – including VR-enhanced V.A.T.S. – Fallout 4 VR isn’t just a jaunt through the Wasteland, it's the entire game," reads the announcement. "The whole world is fully explorable. That includes hundreds of locations, characters and quests. This is your opportunity to step into the Wasteland and experience Fallout 4 in a whole new way."

While I'm not so sure I'd want to return to this story, roaming the wastes in VR could be inherently enjoyable (and I can see the hours just flying by). The footage shown today doesn't really impress, but that's not unexpected for a trailer of a VR game.

Creation Club brings new content to Skyrim and Fallout 4

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:19 PM PDT

Bethesda is breathing life into some old classics in the form of Creation Club, a "collection of new game content for Skyrim and Fallout 4" that includes new weapons, armor, accessories and other things made by both Bethesda employees and outside creators.  It's all totally sanctioned by Bethesda so it will definitely work with your game -- whereas mods can cause some problems with existing save data and things like that.

Creation Club is coming this summer to PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Bethesda announces Doom VFR at E3 for PSVR and Vive

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 04:02 PM PDT

To kick off their 2017 press conference, the jazzed up "Bethesdaland," company VP Pete Hines introduced "one of two VR projects" they have in the works, Doom VFR.

Not much is known about it right now other than that it's some form of Doom, it's VR, and it's coming to the PlayStation VR and VIVE platforms. It's described as a "new" game and not a straight port of the recent critically acclaimed shooter, so don't get your hopes up!

Come watch Bethesda's E3 press conference with us!

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 03:30 PM PDT

A mere two years ago, Bethesda was in the E3 driver's seat. Its initial E3 press conference was also the earliest of 2015, meaning that its Sunday night event was the one to kick off the week's festivities.

My how things have changed. This year, Bethesda's annual Sunday evening presser is the third of the year. EA and Xbox already took their turns. The thunder has been stolen.

With a good showing, Bethesda can recapture that thunder. It's an interesting year for Bethesda, as Quake Champions is basically the only announced game that hasn't been released yet (along with the Skyrim port for Switch). There's an hour to fill and we know very little about what's certain to be shown.

It's late at night (especially for anyone who's not on the west coast), but stay up a little later with us and see what Bethesda's bringing to the table. This press conference kicks off at 9pm Pacific, 30 minutes after this post goes live. Hit the comments with all your reactions and joking off.

Blade Stranger is a new crossover fighter featuring Japanese favorites

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 03:15 PM PDT

Fans of Japanese indie games who were disappointed by the decidedly neon green teraflops flavored first day of E3, this one is for you. Former Dtoid video producer Jon Carnage just squeezed an exclusive out of Nicalis's Tyrone Rodrieguez with the announcement of Blade Strangers, an "easy input" fighter from the creators of Code of Princess

Switch, PS4 and PC are the announced platforms for now, but the release date is still up in the air. As for the game, it looks fast but relatively simple, with a focus on wake ups and other ground game strategies. Sounds like the devs are also making an effort to stay away from big areal combos and infinites, which should help their game make a unique name for itself.

Personally, I'll be picking this one up for the cast alone. Code of Princess is best known for its buxom, mostly-naked protagonist Solange, but I've always been more impressed with Ali, the butch, bronzed butt-kicker who loves her. It's great to see her make the cut here along with Master T, Curly Brace from Cave Story, and Kawase from Yumi's Odd Odyssey.

With five slots on the roster still a mystery, who would you like to see join the game next? My votes are for Jim Hawkins from 1001 Spikes, Kero from Kero Blaster, Mina from Battle Chef Brigade, Shantae from, uh, Shantaeand Isaac from Binding of Isaac, but redrawn in a sexy anime style.

I know that sounds unlikely, but jeez, this is E3 we're talking about. Now is the time for dreamers.

Grading Microsoft's 2017 E3 press conference

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 02:00 PM PDT

The first big, big, big E3 2017 press conference has come and gone. I'm choosing not to count EA because I've already forgotten what was there. Something about a Madden story mode and Battlefront II looking like how Battlefront should've in the first place. Meanwhile, Microsoft has finally stopped cockteasing the Scorpio -- or, Xbox One X -- price and admitted its the $500 we expected. Yikes. Yikes.

On the other hand this is probably the best Microsoft E3 conference in my six plus years at Destructoid! They pulled a Sony and just went games games games bleeding into one another. No one tried to sell me a subscription media service. There wasn't even any focus on sports games (not counting their exclusive, Forza Motorsport). Wow!

On the third hand, a lot of the games were known (EA understandably teased Anthem the day before) or not exclusive. Plus with Microsoft's few, full exclusives all are playable on Windows, which kind of undercuts their exclusivity if you have a PC (and could undercut the point of an Xbox One X). But hell yeah, new Metro! And a Cuphead release date, holy shit! Not a bad showing.

(Update) You can nab Rare Replay for free from Mixer

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 01:30 PM PDT

[Update: Apparently its not as easy as just linking your Xbox Live account with Mixer (why would it be?). As our community member elconrado has noted, you need to have either watched the Microsoft E3 conference from your Mixer account or tune into one of the Xbox Daily features during the week. The times for those are:

Monday, June 12th at 3pm PDT
Tuesday, June 13th at 1pm PDT
Wednesday, June 14th at 1pm PDT
Thursday, June 15th at 10am PDT

It figures Microsoft would have some weird stipulation for claiming a free game, but at least this isn't the worst hoop to jump through.]

I've honestly never heard of Mixer before. When Microsoft was hocking it during their E3 conference, I thought it was some weird dating app geared towards gamers. Apparently it is a livestreaming community made for gaming...so Twitch. Anyway, that vague promise of "freebies" for linking Mixer with your Live account wasn't a bunch of baloney.

If you link your account from today until Friday, you'll get Rare Replay for the low price of nothing. It will be yours to keep, as well. That is a tremendously good deal, even if you happen to not like more than half of the games included with that collection. I don't even own an Xbox One and I'm going to nab this, so that says something.

How would you change the hearts of the games industry?

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 01:15 PM PDT

You are a shadowy Fandom Thief, preparing to pull off the videogame heist of the century. After E3, social media will be abuzz with tales of how you mysteriously altered the course of a major player in the games industry.

Which major player, you ask? That's up to you! Want this year’s Nintendo Direct to focus on Mother 3? Simply change Reggie Fils-Aime's beefy heart to make him see the importance of Lucas's strange, heart-rending adventure. Want Ubisoft to preempt their new IP announcement by canceling Far Cry 5, as penance for its heretical direction? Simply show Yves Guillemot’s inner demons the guillotine, and show him the light.

The rules are thus: much like the heroes of super-stylish cognitive caper Persona 5, you must make your way through your target's mental palace to steal their treasure.

Most of the stuff from Xbox's E3 press conference is already up on Amazon

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 12:00 PM PDT

Scorpio, like most code names, was too good to live forever. We have the Xbox One X now, a name that savvy internet users immediately noted can be abbreviated to "Xbox." Also, X is the roman numeral for 10, and Microsoft is pretty big on the number 10 right now.

For whatever reason, the Xbox One X isn't available to pre-order yet. You'd think that'd have gone up as soon as the price was announced. Nope. If you're here for that, I just have a page for you to stalk.

However, some of the triple-A games that Microsoft showed off are already available to pre-order on Amazon. It'll be a while before they release, but you can wrap them up now if that's your style.

Here's most of the major stuff from the Xbox presser as listed by Amazon. Note that these prices are without the discount that Prime subscribers get, you just have to add them to your cart to see the savings.

We'll update this post as more pre-orders go live.

Everything that happened at Microsoft's packed E3 2017 press conference

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 11:00 AM PDT

Well, it didn't have its own Final Fantasy VII Remake moment, but I for one enjoyed Microsoft's game-filled E3 conference this year.

Microsoft did what it needed to do after touting the Kinect and the "all-in-one entertainment system" angle for so long -- show us games (42 of them). We got some real exclusives, some timed/console exclusives (love that marketing speak), and some 4K/HDR exclusives, but a number of them looked pretty great, and the ID@Xbox program is thriving well enough.

The Xbox One X? The jury is out. As a 4K TV owner I'm excited to play a number of these projects in native 4K, but that's more like window dressing -- not a definitive selling point. Because really, these things need to be good too. Some reports estimate that by 2020 half of all US homes will own a 4K TV, but right now the numbers are notably lower.

Again, a lot of this is inside baseball, techy stuff, and not a "winning" slam dunk. Just like Microsoft likes it, right? Leave it to Sony or Nintendo to have some sort of blowout announcement -- they almost always do.

Here's some in-engine gameplay from BioWare's new IP Anthem

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:54 AM PDT

Today, during the Xbox press conference, EA and BioWare showed off "in-engine" gameplay from new BioWare IP Anthem. The game is a co-op open world RPG, where players team up with their friends to go beyond the walls of an unnamed city to fight robotic enemies.

Anthem has all the hallmarks of a modern shooter RPG: named colored loot, different classes anchored by a decent "all-round" class, and challenging areas that require multiple players. The game will feature exo-suits called "Javelins" that can be customized on a visual and gameplay level, as well as a sick-looking jetpack you can use to fly around the game world.

Sadly, the gameplay trailed lacked any of the BioWare hallmarks, so it's unclear if Anthem will have any kind of dialogue wheel or romance options.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War's E3 demo looks pretty similar to its predecessor

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:45 AM PDT

So we can stop calling it the "Scorpio" now. In all of its literature leading up to this moment Middle-earth: Shadow of War was described as "Scorpio" compatible, but that end today with the announcement of the Xbox One X.

The October 10 bound game (that's also coming to PC and PS4) had another demonstration today, mostly showing off some boss fights, banter, and the domination/nemesis system yet again. It's...all a little too similar for my tastes.

"Beat up boss, hold B, then choose a QTE" isn't the best way to show off Shadow of War, at least not as well as the siege system in its debut trailer. As someone who wasn't the biggest fan of the first, there's plenty of room for improvement.

Sign me up for Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:38 AM PDT

Ori and the Blind Forest was such a treat and, to date, it remains one of my favorite Xbox One games as a beautiful, challenging, and at times emotional metroidvania title. (It's not too late to play it there or on PC. Go go go!). Just hearing the name of the sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, is enough for me.

This detail-drenched trailer out of E3 2017 sure is nice, too.

"Embark on an all new adventure to discover the mysteries beyond the forest of Nibel, uncover the hidden truths of those lost, and unravel Ori's true destiny."

Will of the Wisps is coming exclusively to Xbox One and Windows 10. No date yet.

Xbox One X launching November 7 at $499

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:37 AM PDT

As previously rumored throughout the day, the Xbox One X will launch November 7 at $499. The price of the Xbox One S has received a $50 price cut.

What do you think of the price? Given the planned titles we've seen, is $499.99 a deal breaker? I'm not sure yet as I'm still trying to process all of this, but it's really going to depend on whether or not the titles remain as impressive as the reveals initially seem.

Someone's gotta pay for all of those teraflops.

Original Xbox games are coming to Xbox One backward compatibility

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:37 AM PDT

Two years ago, Microsoft's E3 bombshell was that Xbox 360 backward compatibility was coming to Xbox One. Today, Microsoft turned the clock back a little further.

Xbox head Phil Spencer took the stage again to reveal that backward compatibility is extending to original Xbox titles. The first announced game to be included is 2003's Crimson Skies.

However, that was also the only game to be announced. Xbox committed itself to 360 backward compatibility, and now it has nearly 400 games in the program. Original Xbox titles will probably be shown the same dedication.

Open-world RPG Ashen is the next game from Annapurna Interactive

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:28 AM PDT

Annapurna's foray into the world of video games continues with Ashen, a game set in a ruined world where the player characters look to bring light back to whatever bad situation they've found themselves in.

The game is a multiplayer open-world RPG and has been in development in some form since 2014. Ashen reportedly takes inspiration from The Road, and will feature Dark Souls-esque combat with a stamina system. It's currently set for release on Xbox One, Steam and the Windows Store.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm brings us hella more Chloe

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:24 AM PDT

Those rumors of a Life is Strange prequel ended up being true. Surprising absolutely no one, Square Enix showed off Life is Strange: Before the Storm during Microsoft's E3 conference. The biggest takeaway from the trailer was that this won't follow the typical five episode format of most episodic games, but will be chopped down to three.

The game will take a look at Chloe's years without Max before the events of the first game. Whether or not this will dilute the actual impact of the narrative in the original game is yet to be seen, but I guess getting some more HELLA will make us all better people.

The game will be launching on August 31 and will feature Xbox One X enhancements. I'm also sure it will be heading to PC and PS4, since it wasn't listed as a console exclusive.

Osiris: New Dawn, Raiders of the Broken Planet, Unruly Heroes, Path of Exile, Battlerite, Surviving Mars, Fable Fortune, Observer, Robocraft: infinite, Dunk Lords, Minion Masters, Brawlout, Ooblets, Dark and Light, Strange Brigade, Riverbond, Hello Neighbor, Shift, and Conan Exiles.

Crackdown 3 finally has a release date

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:18 AM PDT

Crackdown 3 was a big Microsoft reveal seemingly ages ago with a focus on how "cloud computing" was going to make the game very, uh, cloudy, I guess. Anyways it showed back up at Microsoft's E3 presser, as introduced by Terry Crews, and finally has a release date: November 7, 2017.

It will be exclusive to the Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive, and launches the same day as the new Xbox One X.

Cuphead was in Xbox's presser again, but it actually has a release date now

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:14 AM PDT

For the 14th consecutive E3 (all numbers approximate), Cuphead was involved in Xbox's E3 press conference.

But, for the 1st consecutive E3, Cuphead has a release date. September 29. That's when we can allegedly play Cuphead.

I'm not sure I like living in this strange new world where Cuphead is finished.

You won't need VR for Super Lucky's Tale

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:13 AM PDT

For those of us who liked the look of Lucky's Tale but didn't get around to it on account of the whole you-need-an-Oculus-Rift thing, good news! The follow-up, Super Lucky's Tale, is coming November 7 for Xbox One and Windows 10, as revealed on-stage at Microsoft's E3 presser.

"Join Lucky, the ever-optimistic, energetic, and lovable hero on his quest to find his inner strength and help his beloved sister rescue the Book of Ages from Jinx," reads the announcement. "Jinx, the scheming and mysterious villain, is trying to reshape the world...but for what reason?"

I've played a little of Lucky's Tale and liked it, but this seems more fleshed-out.

Code Vein evokes a lot of things, like Bloodborne and Nier

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:10 AM PDT

Between the large inscrutable monsters and the ruined post-apocalyptic landscape, Bandai Namco's Code Vein reminds me of the first Nier (post-apocalyptic world populated by people who are involved with some kind of crazy "keep humanity alive" scheme) but with even more anime – an impression solidified by the game's appearance at Microsoft's E3 2017 conference.

According to the initial reveal trailer, the game will follow a bunch of vampires in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity's, uh, humanity has been shed in order to survive whatever sort of end has brought civilization to its knees. There's also a bunch of feral vampires who have succumbed to their desire for blood, which sounds real familiar.

There's some new gameplay footage in this E3 trailer, which makes the game look like a slightly more involved hack-and-slasher.

Sea of Thieves can be anything!

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:07 AM PDT

I don't remember the last time I saw Sea of Thieves, but it doesn't really thrill me. I'm not big on pirates and the whole open world thing is a little old hat. That isn't to say this doesn't look neat, but I don't know how much I can believe about the trailer when the narrator claims the game can be, "ANYTHING!"

Regardless, this should be a thrill for any seafarers or pirates in training. The graphics are also really pretty and will be enhanced for Xbox One X, so they are bound to look even better on a 4K set (I'm still stuck in the stone ages with 1080p). The game will be launching in early 2018, so just a little bit longer before we'll get our hands on it.

Black Desert Online is coming to Xbox One

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:02 AM PDT

Korean MMO Black Desert Online is making its console debut on Xbox One early next year. This reveal was part of Microsoft's rapid-fire games reel.

Black Desert is already available on PC, as it launched worldwide in 2016. That player base is sure to grow when Xbox joins its ecosystem. Consoles aren't really where you expect to see an MMO like this, but the platform-holders are doing their best to change that perception.

The Artful Escape coming to Xbox One 'when it's damn ready'

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what we're looking at but The Artful Escape of Francis Vendetti is coming exclusively to Xbox One and Windows 10 in 4K/Ultra HD..."when it's damn ready."

Gotta respect that. I'm all in either way as it looks way too cool to pass up. Beethoven & Dinosaur's title is "an action, adventure, exploration, narrative driven, musical-laser-light-battle kind of game," and I kind of need it right now please.

Cyberpunk cinematic platformer The Last Night made an appearance at Microsoft's E3 presser and still looks absolutely jaw-dropping.

Aside from the trailer, it comes with the additional news that it will be a console exclusive to Xbox One, at least at launch. So PC and Xbox One at launch, PS4 probably sometime down the line. Maybe even Switch. But for now, PC and Xbox One in 2018.

That Dragon Ball FighterZ video looks so dang good

Watch the Dragon Ball Z Fighter trailer again. And again!

Arc System Works is doing a 2.5D Dragon Ball Z fighting game and hot dang does it look good. Like, "What you imagine in your mind's eye when you think DBZ fighter" good.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Steam in 2018.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said he recently saw the game in Japan while on-stage during Microsoft's E3 presser and called it "hilarious, a little crazy, and a whole lot of fun." I buy that. And I want to buy this, even as someone who hasn't kept up with Dragon Ball Z for years. Here's hoping it isn't too terribly tough to break into.

Minecraft is unifying nearly all of its versions across all platforms, except Sony

Mojang and 4J have announced that they are now one step closer to unifying all Minecraft players across the globe.

Known as the "Bedrock Engine," this reconfigured infrastructure will power the VR, Windows 10, Pocket Edition, Android, iOS, Xbox One, and Switch editions. Speaking off there's not going to be any more "Editions" tacked onto the ends of Minecraft ports, as they're all going away in an attempt to bring everything together outside of the "Java Edition" of the PC (which Microsoft notes that they're still continuing to develop for), and legacy editions from past generations (like Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360). When asked, a Microsoft rep re-iterated that there are "no plans" to integrate last generation consoles at any point. A 4K update is also coming to Minecraft.

So what does this all mean? The huge takeaway is that there's cross-platform play. Xbox One and Nintendo cross-play is big, and although there are no announcements yet for voice chat there will be text chat. When pressed by Destructoid, Microsoft declined to comment on whether or not Sony would be joining the party, but did say, "we'd love t have PlayStation 4 players using the Bedrock Engine." Other upgrades include the raise of the five player limit to eight, bigger servers, and massive realms are making their way into the Bedrock Engine if they weren't already available in a specific version. Console versions will also support the infinite worlds mechanic, can generate past the limits of existing worlds, and DLC carries across all Bedrock games.

If you aren't excited you can pass all of this news onto your kid, who is probably playing Minecraft or watching a Minecraft stream right now. As for me, I'm stoked as one of the many adults who still play it to give this giant unified world a go.

If I can't paint my house in State of Decay 2, then I'm out

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:45 AM PDT

While State of Decay 2 isn't a new announcement, we finally got our first real good look at it. From the sound of things, there will be a bigger emphasis on base building and more dramatic choices about who you save or kill. It seems to pack more emotional weight than the first game, but I just want to know if I can paint my house. If I can't, then this game will have failed.

My stupidity aside, the game seems to be shaping up well. I'm not sure if I have it in me to play another zombie game, but a co-op survival game sounds cool enough. The game will be headed to Xbox One and Windows 10 as well as featuring Xbox One X enhancements.

The Darwin Project is another Hunger Games/survival title, coming to Xbox One

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:42 AM PDT

Unveiled by way of a hokey eSports angle, The Darwin Project is bringing a little fantasy to our normally grounded, gritty modern survival genre world. It's called The Darwin Project, and will feature head-to-head elimination matches with special powers and a cartoony flair.

It's billed as an "Xbox One console launch exclusive," so it's likely confirmed for at least PC.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds coming exclusively to Xbox One later this year

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:39 AM PDT

"PlayerUnknown himself" came on to announce that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will hit the Xbox One in late 2017, from Coffee Stain Studios and Ghost Ship. After its release, it'll receive enhancements for the Xbox One X.

This version is being developed taking community feedback into account, and I'm sure will expand upon its already three million heavy user base on PC.

Assassin's Creed: Origins is indeed set in Egypt

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:32 AM PDT

Ubisoft's worst-kept secret was just confirmed at Microsoft's E3 presser and [extremely Simpsons voice] Assassin's Creed is indeed going to Egypt with Assassin's Creed: Origins, which features "RPG"-like additions to Ubisoft's worn open-world format. "Level up!" Ah, yes, leveling. Innovative!

The first trailer included gladiatorial combat, arrows shot off horseback, and fighting crocodiles while swimming. There's more mystic stuff, too, including a giant snake or basilisk-looking thing. There's also a hawk straight out of Far Cry: Primal (or a drone from a more modern Ubisoft game) and a loot system.

Set in "the birthplace of modern civilization...and the assassin brotherhood," Origins will have you play as "an Egyptian sheriff, if you like."

It's coming out October 27.

Metro Exodus is the next chapter in the Metro series

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:32 AM PDT

Well, it looks like those rumors last year were right. Sort of, anyway. There's a new Metro game, it's just not going to be ready for 2017.

Phil Spencer announced that the Xbox press briefing would have 42 games, 22 of which are Xbox exclusives to some degree. The first trailer shown after that was for Metro Exodus, the next title in the Metro series.

There's no word as to whether Metro Exodus is an Xbox/Windows 10 exclusive. If it is, there's a good chance it's a timed deal as Deep Silver still owns the rights to the franchise. Details will surely come out later this week as to the specifics of that. There's plenty of time, as Metro Exodus is expected to release in 2018.

Forza Motorsport 7 is set for October on Xbox One and Windows 10

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:19 AM PDT

Following the Xbox One X reveal that kicked off Microsoft's E3 2017 press event, Turn 10 Studios was next on the docket with another obligatory reveal: Forza Motorsport 7.

Internally, we all tried to guess what the game was from the showing's vague desert landscape shots, before it got to the cars, and we kept coming up short. "Red Dead! Crackdown! Wait, no, it's just Forza."

The game is due out on October 3, 2017 for Xbox One and Windows 10 with 700 cars at launch. Turn 10 is also promising support for native 4K and 60 frames per second (Xbox One X), and "shocking levels of detail." Shocking, I tell ya!

Forza Motorsport 7 will be available for Xbox One X when the console launches on November 7.

Microsoft confirms Xbox One X, formerly 'Scorpio' at E3

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:01 AM PDT

Live at Microsoft's 2017 E3 conference, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One X, the newest member of the Xbox family.

It'll launch on November 7 and will support 4K and HDR, as well as Dolby Atmos sound and 4K UHD Blu-ray playback. The specs are: 6 Teraflop GPU clocked at 1.172 Ghz, 12GB of GDDR5 memory, and 326GB of memory. It'll also use a liquid-cooled vapor chamber that's "only used in high-end PCs." It's the "smallest Xbox ever."

All Xbox One accessories and games will work with the Xbox One X. Your entire game library will allegedly be enhanced with faster load times and higher fidelity, a la the PS4 Pro.

But will people buy it? We'll see come this November. Maybe Microsoft will start sharing sales numbers again.

Come watch Xbox's E3 press conference with us!

Of all the E3 press conferences, Xbox's is the biggest uncertainty. We've been teased with Project Scorpio for a year now, and it's time to finally learn all the specifics about this new Xbox. It'll almost certainly live up to its claim of "most powerful console ever" but it remains to be seen if that'll be a game-changer in Microsoft's favor.

The other big question mark concerns Xbox's portfolio of upcoming games. While it's clear that Scorpio will be the headliner at this presser, the popular consensus is that Xbox needs to make a real splash with its game announcements.

Of the three big platform-holders, Xbox is in the most unique position. It could either steal the show or it could end up being the biggest disappointment. Anything's on the table.

Join us as we watch Xbox's future unfold over the course of the next 90 or so minutes. The presentation starts at 2pm Pacific, 30 minutes from when this post goes live. As always, your reactions are welcomed in the comments below.

Dota 2's long awaited campaign is unwelcoming, unique

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 07:00 AM PDT

When I bought into Dota 2's $9.99 Siltbreaker campaign (which includes a host of convoluted The International 2017 Battle Pass extras), it felt like I was taking a step into a timewarp when "use map settings" custom games ran supreme in Starcraft and Warcraft III.

That trial by fire-esque unforgiving atmosphere is what the MOBA genre thrives in, but it was a tad surprising to see that philosophy carried over in 2017. In its current incarnation, I don't see it expanding beyond the hardcore crowd.
