Your options for configuring a name brand gaming laptop from iBuyPower are expanding. Lian Li Rolls Out Boxy Looking PC-Q01 Case for Mini ITX Builds

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 09:42 AM PDT

Lian Li PC-Q01A brushed aluminum chassis for smaller systems

Lian Li's obvious fetish for brushed aluminum continues to influence the company's penchant for designing cases. The newest case from Lian Li to receive the brushed aluminum treatment is the PC-Q01, a mini-ITX enclosure with "ample space for hardware" and a tool-lessly removable L-shaped cover that's designed to make installations a lot easier for a mini-ITX build, the company says.

It's a 13.3L case that supports double-slotted graphics cards and ATX power supplies up to 210mm in length, and CPU coolers up to 90mm in height. For storage chores, both the side panel and case floor can hold a combination of a 2.5-inch SSD and 3.5-inch HDD, or two 2.5-inch SSDs, Lian Li says.

Lian Li designed the case with passive cooling in mind, though if the thought of a fanless enclosure gives you the heebie-jeebies, you can add a 120mm or 140mm fan on the case floor in place of drives.

The PC-Q01 will be available this month in black or silver for $64 MSRP.

Microsoft's First Android Phone (Nokia X2) Focuses on Affordability

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 08:33 AM PDT

Nokia X2Nokia X2 rolls out globally in July for 99 euros

The day has finally come that Microsoft released an Android handset. Of course, we knew this day was coming, the wheels of which were set in motion when Microsoft acquired Nokia's mobile division. Still, it's a bit surreal. That said, Microsoft's launch of the Nokia X2 isn't about dominating the Android space with a high-end handset, but about introducing the "next billion" people to the mobile Internet and cloud services.

This is an entry level device from head to toe. The Nokia X2 has a 4.3-inch display with an 800x480 resolution powered by a Snapdragon 200 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz and 1GB of RAM. It also features a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus and flash, 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and an 1800 mAh battery that's good for up to 10 hours of talk time on 2G, up to 13 hours of talk time on 3G, and up to 23 days of standby time.

Microsoft is being careful not to overly promote the Android brand. While Microsoft is quick to point out that the Nokia X2 "provides access to a world of Android apps and popular Microsoft services," the OS is referred to as the Nokia X Software Platform 2.0, which we hear is based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

The Nokia X2 will launch as a dual-SIM device available in glossy orange, black, and green in July for 99 euros. Later on Microsoft will add glossy yellow, white, and matte gray color options to the lineup. All of these seem destined for developing regions rather than places like the U.S. where Microsoft would prefer you purchase a Lumia handset.

PNY Responds to Optima SSD Controller Controversy

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 06:50 AM PDT

PNY OptimaRetail Optima SSDs were found to be using different controllers than the ones sent to reviewers

PNY put itself in a somewhat sticky spot when it decided to equip its Optima solid state drives bound for retail with a different brand controller than the ones that were sent to reviewers. Once it was discovered by the public, there were cries of wrongdoing over what buyers considered a bait-and-switch tactic. We reached out to PNY for an official explanation on the matter and here's what the company told us.

"The PNY Optima SSD line is an entry-level and value driven product. As our website states, the Optima SSDs utilize multiple qualified controllers to offer the best available solution to our customers. We do not and have not specified any one particular brand of controller, however we do feature performance specifications which include using synchronous flash and random read/write speeds of up to 60k," PNY told Maximum PC.

In other words, it's all about the performance claims. Pricing and availability may dictate which controller PNY uses at any particular time, and while two SSDs from the same product family might sport different parts, performance should be comparable.

This is similar to the statement PNY provided when the controller swap first came to light. What people found sketchy, however, was that every Optima SSD sent out to reviewers used SMI controllers, while those in the retail sector were found to be using LSI (SandForce) controllers. PNY offered up an explanation for that as well.

"All the reviews units were shipped simultaneously and those Optima SSDs were built with SMI controllers – one of the newer controllers currently available on the market. However the current set of Optima SSDs are being built with LSI controllers, a very reputable line which meet all advertised performance specifications," PNY added. "Either way, consumers should have peace of mind that they are receiving a solid product built with tier 1 synchronous flash. PNY has been completely transparent about the use of multiple qualified controllers which grants us the ability to offer consumers the best possible value and performance."

We checked PNY's website and sure enough, the description for its Optima SSDs clearly states that it uses "multiple qualified controllers," which gives the company the flexibility it needs to "stay very competitive in the entry-level SSD market." This is different from, say, the PNY's XLR8 SSD line, in which the company lists the controller (SandForce 2281).

None of this means you need to like or agree with the practice of swapping parts, especially in situations like this where reviewers and consumers received SSDs with completely different controllers. If nothing else, PNY (and other companies that might be doing the same thing) could avoid these situations by pointing out to reviewers the possibility of using different parts, which could then be included in the review.

Hyperspace Beacon: Fixing SWTOR's community representation problem
You might be aware that I was once a community representative for Star Wars Galaxies. The player governing body was called the Senate. I don't remember who started it, but I do remember the formal revamp during the time Kelly "Valara" Knox served as Community Manager. It was during that period that I represented the roleplay community in the SWG Senate.

Because of my time serving as an MMO community representative and my vested interest in the Star Wars: The Old Republic community, I can say that the representative system employed by BioWare is ineffective. But I don't solely blame the BioWare community team for its shortcomings. Indulge me as I discuss how it could be better and how we could better utilize the current system.

World of Warcraft previews the Tanaan Jungle

    Posted: 24 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT

    You'd better run through it.
The first two zone previews for World of Warcraft's next expansion focused on the areas that will lie at the heart of each faction, but Warlords of Draenor doesn't start in either of those areas. No, players will begin by setting foot (or hoof) into the Tanaan Jungle, a lush land filled with warriors of the Iron Horde as well as no shortage of vicious beasts. Yes, it's dangerous even without the orcs, that's kind of a running theme here.

Players using characters boosted to level 90 will be learning their classes for the first time in the jungle, meeting orc luminaries such as Grom Hellscream and Khadgar Bladefist. (They're with the Iron Horde; they won't be happy to see you.) Players are also teased that they might need to make a deal with the warlock Gul'dan to get out in one piece, which is an activity that has never worked out well for anyone. Check out the full preview and all the lore it implies on the official site.

WildStar previews the zones of the Strain drop

    Posted: 24 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Can we be fighting a war on one front just for once? Just to mix things up? Try it out, see how it feels.
The first major update for WildStar is due out in early July, and it's bringing plenty of content along with it including two zones for players to explore. Blighthaven and the Northern Wastes are being unveiled in more detail today, both of which contain plenty of opportunities for adventurers to take on all sorts of new challenges.

Blighthaven is a landscape dominated by the Strain's mutated minions along with uncontrolled Eldan machinery, featuring such comfortable-sounding regions as the Cankertube Swamps, the Globellum, the Sanctuary of the Keepers, and the Genesis Chamber. It's prime territory for new content to explore what happened to the Eldan as well as understand the virulent opponent that is the Strain.

The Northern Wastes, meanwhile, brings players back to the Northern Wilds after the events in the early game, with both Dominion and Exiles struggling to claim the territory... until a new threat emerges from the Eldan bio-labs in the area. New events, challenges, missions, and path content awaits players in the zone. It's all adding up to plenty of content for a first update; you can check out the official reveal page for a few extra details.

The Daily Grind: Have you ever volunteered for an MMO?

        EQ
A few weeks ago in my Working As Intended column, I brought up the role gamemasters and officially appointed player helpers had in fostering communities, directing roleplaying, and aiding newbies and event organizers in early MMOs. We're not talking about just floating a HELPER tag over your head (though most modern MMOs lack even that); old-school games literally ran programs that traded game time (or just a hearty thanks!) to players who would log into special accounts or robed characters and lend a hand, officiate a wedding, or help a clueless nooblet find the bank.

While I was focusing primarily on Ultima Online in that article, just a few days later, SOE tweeted a post about the EverQuest franchise's alive-and-kicking volunteer Guide program. Participating player Guides are now expected to run dynamic events and quests rather than interact in chat, but the concept is the same, even in 2014, however strange it must seem to newcomers to the genre.

Today I'm wondering how many of our readers have ever volunteered in a semi-official or official capacity within their MMO of choice. How did it treat you, and do you want to see programs like these become more widespread?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Lion's Arch Lament dissected for Guild Wars 2 fans

          Posted: 23 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Nothing lasts forever. Or revives forever.
The destruction of Lion's Arch formed the centerpiece of Guild Wars 2's first Living Story finale, an event with a big emotional impact for players who had grown accustomed to the city's presence. How do you summarize such a huge event? With music, of course. A new development blog on the official site details the creation of "Lion's Arch Lament," music that commemorates the destruction while at the same time walking through the history of the city in just a few moments.

The piece starts off with an homage to the music most strongly associated with Lion's Arch in the original Guild Wars, then ties in Scarlet's Theme and the city music from Guild Wars 2 to herald its return and destruction. If you're familiar with the game's music, you should give the post a read and listen to the song; it's likely to stir at least a few emotions about the city and its loss.

Good news for the VR enthusiasts today, or at least the VR enthusiasts who live in China and have a deep-seated desire to hack at some monsters in TERA. The game's Chinese publisher, Kunlun, revealed an agreement being made between the company and Sony to bring the game to the latter's virtual reality headset. The idea is that the headset will allow players to step into the game with what amounts to a full IMAX experience, only with significantly more giant monsters.

Nothing has been said on whether or not this option will be available for players in North America. The Chinese version of the game is planning on its first large-scale open test in August, and there will be unique content for the region, but hopefully that won't include the ability to play the game with a headset strapped over your eyes.

The Division dev talks districts, mobile, and more

Co-Optimus has posted an interesting video Q&A with Division IP developer Martin Hultberg of Ubisoft. Hultberg talks a bit about the game's backstory as well as how players will interact with the game world. There are certain level restrictions, for example, as well as equipment requirements for entering a given area (gas masks to deal with contagion levels, etc.).

Hultberg also mentions that players who buy The Division get a tablet version as well, so if you can't make it home to your console (and eventually, your PC, right Ubi? RIGHT?), you can be a fifth wheel of sorts and "support the four other players" via your tablet.

The interview clip has a lot of gameplay footage spliced throughout, so head past the cut and have a look for yourself.

                  Hands-On with the PS4 Version

Although I really enjoy Diablo 3, I must admit that I have a particular bias towards the PC version, simply because of my preference for playing action RPGs with a mouse and keyboard. I play it almost exclusively multiplayer, however, and have thought at times that the experience could benefit from some couch co-op once in a while.

                  Ready to mount up?

Guild Wars 2 isn't always serious. There are plenty of ways for players to goof off with large collections of minis, or throwing food at others while wearing a costume! Players have even spent a lot of time mastering the instruments, playing songs for the digital world to hear! Players have done all of these things, even while wearing Charr plush backpacks! Ya, the game has some pretty silly things, but why do so many people get mad when you mention adding mounts to the gem store?
