Buffalo's 802.11ac Router And Media Bridge Hit Shelves, First 1.3Gbps Wi-Fi Devices Available

Posted: 14 May 2012 10:45 AM PDT

Faster Wi-Fi ain't just coming, folks -- it's already here. Just a few weeks back, we reported that Netgear was racing to be the first manufacturer with a speedy new 802.11ac router available on the consumer market, expecting to ship its R6300 router sometime this month. Well, "sometime" wasn't fast enough; we're still waiting on the R6300, while Buffalo announced that its first 802.11ac devices are available in stores today in the form of the AirStation WZR-D1800H wireless router and the WLI-H4-D1300 wireless media bridge.

With theoretical maximum speeds of up to 1.3Gbps, 802.11ac signals could achieve speeds three times faster than the 802.11n routers found in homes across the world today. That's on the 5GHz spectrum; the Buffalo router also packs in a standard 3x3 802.11n radio to operate on the 2.4GHz spectrum at up to 450Mbps. Range remains about the same as with 802.11n routers, however. Older 802.11g/b/n devices will work just fine with the new Buffalo 802.11ac offerings, albeit on the 2.4GHz spectrum.

One big problem with being on the bleeding edge of Wi-Fi standards; there aren't any consumer devices that can receive the router's 802.11ac signal aside from Buffalo's 802.11ac media bridge -- and connecting devices to the bridge while maintaining those (theoretical) 1.3Gbps transfer speeds requires Ethernet connections. In other words, consider the 802.11ac router an investment in the future unless you want wires running through your home today.

Both the router and the bridge are available now at Fry's and Newegg for $180 a pop.

Does The GTX 670 Support 4-Way SLI Or Not?

Posted: 14 May 2012 10:16 AM PDT

After the GTX 670 launched to pretty much universal applause last Friday, a mini-controversy began brewing almost immediately: did it support 4-way SLI or not? The card uses the same GPU as the quad-enabled GTX 680, the PCB sports two SLI connectors, reviews from prominent online enthusiast sources listed the card as supporting quad-SLI, and heck, Asus photos for the GTX670 DirectCU II TOP even show it in a quad setup. Lots of other reviewers said 4-way SLI wasn't available, however. What gives? Does the GTX 670 support 4-card setups or what?

In a word: no. The GTX 670 tops out at 3-way SLI, and it even says as much on Nvidia's website. The good news is that quad support is coming: when PC Perspective began questioning Nvidia about the lack of 4-way SLI, the company responded with "Change in plans.....we will be offering 4-Way SLI support for GTX 670 in a future driver."

Great news! And as for those pics that showed four GTX670 DirectCU II TOPs, a concerned enthusiast named Trevor Foster reached out to Asus for clarification on Facebook. Asus responded quickly: "You are correct 3-Way is the max supported for this mostly we wanted to show it for size relation. If this looks misleading I apologize." (Thanks to Trevor for pointing me towards the clarification.)

So there you have it: the GTX 670 does not support 4-way SLI setups, but it will some day in the future.

Windows 8 Tablets Slated for November, HP is Raring to Go

Posted: 14 May 2012 06:54 AM PDT

Tired of the current crop of tablets mostly sporting Android and iOS? If that's the case, mark your calendars for November, because according to reports, that's when Intel-based slates running Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system are set to land in retail. Anticipation is running high for next-generation tablets equipped with Microsoft's touch-friendly OS, which could prove game changing in the mobile space.

An un-named source "familiar with the device makers' plans" told CNet that the first wave of such tablets will show up in stores in November. The source described the schedule as being "tight" and that Windows 8 mobile devices won't be limited to strictly tablets, but over half of the "more than a dozen" models will be hybrid devices that function as both a notebook and a tablet.

Each Windows 8 device, whether it be a full-blown tablet or a convertible, will run Intel's Clover Trail Atom platform, which will be the chip maker's first dual-core Atom design built on a 32nm manufacturing process. A single-core version of Clover Trail will be used in smartphones.

Hewlett-Packard is one of the companies champing at the bit to give Windows 8-based tablets a whirl, according to Fudzilla, which says HP has no intentions of returning to WebOS.

Forget 22nm Chips, Intel's Already Looking Ahead to 5nm

Posted: 14 May 2012 06:28 AM PDT

Intel's 22nm processors, better known as Ivy Bridge, are fresh out of the fab and have given the Santa Clara's Core architecture a kick in the pants. But is the successor to Sandy Bridge and Sandy Bridge-E already old news? Not exactly, though a peek at Intel's Research & Development roadmap reveals that a 14nm manufacturing process is already in development, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Slides of Intel's R&D pipeline were posted to XBitLabs and show that 14nm is being developed from now through around 2014. Starting in 2015, Intel will look to 10nm, 7nm, and even 5nm, which are currently being researched.

"Our research and development is quite deep, I talk about ten years," Intel CEO Paul Otellini told XbitLabs.

No kidding. Intel is currently upgrading fabs in Oregon, Arizona, and Israel for 22nm, and the chip maker plans to invest in its Oregon, Arizona, and Ireland plants for 14nm and beyond.

Facebook Co-Founder Renounces Citizenship, Will Avoid Massive IPO Tax Bill

Posted: 14 May 2012 06:12 AM PDT

Uncle Sam was all set to collect around $600 million from Brazilian Eduardo Saverin, the other co-founder of Facebook who will make another fortune off of the world's most popular social playground when it makes its initial public offering (IPO) on Friday. But rather than fork over all that money, Saverin decided to renounce his U.S. citizenship, a process he began back in September 2011.

According to a BBC News report, Saverin has been living in Singapore since 2009, and that's where he'll become an official citizen. As his spokesman succinctly put it, Saverin "found it more practical to become a resident of Singapore since he plans to live there for an indefinite period of time." The allure of not having to pay $600 million in taxes undoubtedly played a role in that decision as well, as it's been long known that Mark Zuckerberg and Co. planned to take Facebook public.

When Facebook does file an IPO, it will attempt to raise $10.6 billion, which would be the most ever for a technology firm. It would also value the site at almost $100 billion. Saverin currently holds a 4 percent stake in Facebook, according to BBC News.

Yahoo CEO Exits Stage Left; Company Shares Trend Upwards

Posted: 14 May 2012 05:55 AM PDT

Scott Thompson, the Yahoo Chief Executive Officer who was being investigated by board members on allegations that he overtly padded his resume, has left the building and will not return. In his place is Ross Levinsohn, who Yahoo named interim CEO as it seeks a permanent replacement, or at least one that will last longer than Thompson did, which is barely more than four months.

An analyst with Evercore Partners said in a note that "Investors are likely to take comfort in fresh leadership, particularly at the board level," pointing out that eight of the 11 board seats were filled in the past year alone. Along with Thompson's departure, Yahoo board chairman Roy Bostock is stepping down, and indeed investors reacted positively to the news, pushing Yahoo's stock price up 1.6 percent in pre-market trading, Reuters reports.

Investment firm Third Point, which has a 5.8 percent stake in Yahoo, was the driving force in all this, recently demanding that Yahoo look into Thompson's hiring and make public the review process. With the resignation of Thompson and Levinsohn, Third Point has agreed to end its pending proxy contest and withdraw its previous board nominations, as well as vote its 70,545,400 shares in support of Yahoo's nominees.

"The board is pleased to announce these changes and the settlement with Third Point, and is confident that they will serve the best interests of our shareholders and further accelerate the substantial advances [Yahoo] has made operationally and organizationally since last August. The board believes in the strength of the company's business and assets, and in the opportunities before us, and I am honored to work closely with my fellow directors and Ross to continue to drive Yahoo forward," said Fred Amoroso, Yahoo's board chairman.

Yahoo, which closed at $15.19 per share on Friday, was up to $15.52 in pre-market trading on Monday. The company has a market cap of $18.51 billion.

Warface receives a warm welcome in Russia

Mail.Ru Games sets new record in Russian game market history

Frankfurt (Germany) / Moscow (Russia), May 11th, 2012 – Mail.Ru Group's top-tier MMOFPS Warface – developed by Crytek – has recorded preliminary operating results that set a new record in Russian game market history. Within the first four weeks of operation the title's CCU is already on par with Russia's most successful games, shooters and MMORPGs alike: 28,000 players have been simultaneously fighting for the future in the AAA-shooter from one of the best FPS creators in the world. According to Mail.Ru Group's market analysis, it is an unprecedented result and it took from several months to a few years for competing titles to reach a similar level of performance. As of 10th May 2012, the number of registered users in Warface exceeds 1 million.

With Warface cementing its status as a rising star on the market, Mail.Ru Group has further strengthened its leading position among Russian MOFPS publishers – a position the company has held since the launch of Cross Fire.

"We are extremely satisfied with the Warface results and we are happy that the hard work done by our team over the title has been so fruitful," says Vladimir Nikolsky, the Vice President of Mail.Ru Group Game Division. "We intend to keep up the good work and make Warface not merely a successful game, but also a huge brand and a cybersport discipline, like we did with Cross Fire."

Avni Yerli, Managing Director of Crytek GmbH, adds: "We chose Russia to be the debut market for our title, since we have always had a great reception with Russian gamers and had great confidence in Mail.Ru Group's ability to achieve success. We are extremely happy with the launch, the great work from Mail.Ru Group and the massive effort from our development team and can’t wait to let people around the world play Warface."

Earthrise gains new developer

Posted: 14 May 2012 11:28 AM PDT

Earthrise, sandbox MMORPG originally published and developed by Masthead Studios, has gained a new developer.

SilentFuture has taken over the game, and is working on new development for the game with an intent to relaunch it in the fourth quarter of 2012. Earthrise will feature a free-to-play model as intended by Masthead before the game was shut down in February.

The new developer will also be making some adaptations, including shifting the story to place players directly as part of the apocalypse (rather than living after it), as well as addressing performance and existing design issues.

SilentFuture takes over Earthrise

Wuppertal-based development studio continues development of the online science-fiction role-playing game

Wuppertal, May 10 2012 – Wuppertal-based development studio SilentFuture has taken over the online science-fiction role-playing game “Earthrise”, and is already working on an overhaul. Shut down by developer Masthead in February of 2012, the sandbox MMORPG is receiving a new background story from SilentFuture with the corresponding facelift as well as essential improvements in both gameplay and technology. The relaunch is planned for the fourth quarter of 2012.

Earthrise is scheduled to return to the market as a Free-to-Play game. SilentFuture also plans to revamp many of the systems used in Earthrise and to adjust the game world accordingly. A new background story complete with facelift will provide more excitement – Earthrise players no longer find themselves in a post-apocalyptic world, but rather part of the apocalypse itself.

SilentFuture CEO Daniel Schemann explains: “With Earthrise, we’ve taken over an MMO with enormous potential for development. That’s why we started revamping Earthrise earlier this month together with a team of experienced programmers. First we intend to address known issues in design and technology, during which we will be focusing on fundamental factors such as network and server performance. But we won’t be neglecting the story and the gameplay, either. Our goal is to present players a gaming experience in the near future which is as exciting as it is varied!”

Diablo III - Witch Doctor concept
Not sure if you're ready to take the plunge on Diablo III just yet? Not to worry, as Blizzard has announced a trial of sorts for its highly anticipated dungeon crawler. The Diablo III Starter Edition will let you access the first chapter of the game (up to the Skeleton King) for free. You're limited to level 13, though, and matchmaker results are also limited to your fellow tirekickers.

Where can I get my hands on this fine Starter Edition, you say? You'll need a friend who has bought the full game. Said friend will also need to fork over her Diablo III Guest Pass. If you're fresh out of friends, you'll just have to wait 30 days from the game's release (tomorrow), at which point the Starter Edition will be made available to everyone.

Frogster talks TERA Elin censorship

TERA - Elin
If you're still fuming over the decision to censor TERA's Elin race for the western market, or if you're simply an interested bystander, Eurogamer has posted a new interview that's worth reading.

The site sat down with Frogster's Lucile Le Merle, who addressed the ongoing censorship controversy that manifested itself in the removal of Elin panties and the addition of both longer tights and belly-covering outfits for the characters on both the US and European TERA game servers. Le Merle says that Frogster had no say in the game's PEGI 12 rating, noting that such things are "decided by PEGI, not by us. We only send a specific version of the client to PEGI, which rates it and sends it back to us with the final decision. Then we can contest it, if we deem it's not the right rating."

Le Merle also touches on the cultural divide between East and West (and between anime fans and the uninitiated), concluding that ultimately Frogster and En Masse had to make changes. "In Asia their mindset is completely different. To them it is not a problem. It is not related to pedophilia. It's just part of the culture to have small, little girls that run around smiling. People just find it normal," Le Merle explained.

Lord of the Rings Online's Update 7 is upon us, and it's established itself as taking a step forward... and a step back into the past. Featuring a new skirmish, a revamp of both Moria and the old Fornost instance, and an interesting addition to the legendary item system, Update 7 has a smattering of both endgame and mid-game content for most players to enjoy.

As always, it's worth combing through the notes for the smaller changes. Some of these include new and updated maps, friendlier Elves in Lothlorien who won't shoot you on sight, and Audacity lowering power costs in PvMP.

The official patch notes are up and the game will have the servers patched up by mid-morning. In the meantime, make sure to read up on what we think of the update's big selling points in our recent Road to Mordor column.

The picture is of Destiny's Edge, the adventuring group that features so prominently in Guild Wars 2, facing a rather fearsome foe: The Shatterer. According to the Facebook page, this is actually an in-game screenshot that's been "embellished" by ArenaNet artist Daniel Dociu. As with the other pictures that it has released, ArenaNet has made this image available as a high-resolution version as well.

The Daily Grind: Must MMO housing be open-world to be good?

    Posted: 14 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

    ArcheAge
Whenever the Great MMO Housing debate rears its head, the "of course MMOs ought to have housing" players usually drown out the curmudgeons who lack decorating skills and prefer to live out of their banks and sleep on a bedroll on the public streets (you know who you are!). And then, inevitably, the housing fans turn on each other over which type of housing is best.

Some of us are resigned to the belief that, at best, themepark MMOs willing to take a stab at housing are forever going to implement the instanced variety a la EverQuest II and Lord of the Rings Online, so we may as well get used to it. But sandbox zealots (a term I'm intending affectionately) insist that housing must be open-world, that players should be able to walk up to their own unique spaces within a game and build their abodes from foundation to rooftop. Instanced housing, they say, is just pointless when other people can't easily see what you've created.

What do you think -- is MMO housing just a waste of dev resources if it isn't open-world?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

EVE Evolved: Risk vs. reward in lowsec

        Posted: 13 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

        EVE Evolved title image
In EVE Online's early years, one of its core design philosophies was adherence to a strict risk vs. reward balance scheme. There were riches out there to be found, but to get them, you had to put yourself in the firing line. Police ships patrolled high-security space to keep players safe from piracy, but the only resources available there were low-bounty frigate NPCs and inexpensive ores like Veldspar, Scordite and Omber. In the lawless far-reaches of nullsec, huge NPC bounties and rare ores containing Megacyte and Zydrine tempted hundreds of pilots to head out and make their fortunes.

Nullsec offered absolutely no protection against player attacks, and the only safety to be found was in sheer military force. The biggest and best corporations hoarded these gold mines for themselves, locking down the few entrances into the regions and patrolling the skies for unwanted visitors. Low-security space offered a middle-ground between these two extremes, a place where the everyday pilot could enjoy increased income and pirates were easier to spot. At some time in the past nine years, lowsec lost its place in the game and became simply not worth the effort. But how did that happen, and what can be done to fix it?

In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at why lowsec systems are now ghost towns and suggest an alternative design philosophy that I think could revitalise these under-used areas.
