British Muslims Can Swing the U.K. Election, But Only If They Get Out and Vote

Posted: 18 Nov 2019 12:14 AM PST

In December’s U.K. election, British Muslims represent a swing vote that few are paying attention to. The 2 million eligible Muslim voters in the U.K. have the ability to swing the result, one way or the other. As an imam, I’m encouraging my congregation to get out and vote, and not let Muslims be excluded from the British political conversation any longer.

In previous elections, the Muslim turnout has been relatively low. A parliamentary report last month found that voter registration amongst BAME communities was only half that of the general population. It may be even lower amongst some Muslim communities.

Yet if Muslims do get out to vote, their impact could be transformative in many parts of the U.K. Research just released by the Muslim Council of Britain, a non-partisan umbrella body, shows that both the major parties – the ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labour party – as well as niche parties like the pro-Scottish independence SNP could lose or gain seats through the Muslim vote.

There are 31 marginal seats where the Muslim electorate outnumbers the sitting member of parliament’s (MP’s) majority. In Conservative-held Hendon, for example, the ruling party’s majority is just 1,072. This is in a constituency with an estimated 8,395 eligible Muslim voters. On the other side of the political divide, Labour holds Glasgow North East by just 242 votes. If just a quarter of the 1010 eligible Muslim voters were to swing to the SNP, the Scottish Nationalists would have another seat in Westminster.

But this depends on Muslims registering to vote, something that is not a given in all communities. On Nov.22, organisations like the Muslim Council of Britain are staging the U.K.’s first ever National Muslim Voter Registration Day to encourage members of our community to exercise their democratic rights.

Many Muslims still feel excluded from the political process, which is hardly a surprise as the major parties have all but ignored the Muslim vote at the national level. This is systemic, but most notable with regards to the Conservative Party and its ongoing Islamophobia scandal. The Tories are accused of turning a blind eye to anti-Muslim hatred within the party’s ranks, and are refusing to hold an independent enquiry into it.

This mirrors how the Jewish community feels anti-Semitism isn’t being taken seriously by the Labour Party, leading to similar alienation. Both parties have been proven to have members, candidates and even office holders who have made allegedly Islamophobic or anti-Semitic comments online and in print. In the Conservative Party, this even includes Prime Minister Boris Johnson who has, for example, compared veiled Muslim women to letterboxes – a statement that is deeply hurtful to many Muslim women who want their choice of modest dress to be understood by their fellow Brits.

It’s true that in some Muslim communities voting is seen as clan politics, driven by familial loyalties rather than personal choice. A number of Muslim communities come from rural parts of Pakistan and Kashmir where extended families act as cohesive units and take collective decisions about many things, including voting.

Yet this trend has been exacerbated by lazy campaigning by political parties. Second and third generation British Muslims are typically far more independent of the “clan” than many political strategists think, posing a challenge for political parties, who all too often indulged these clan politics, and ultimately harmed our democracy.

This new generation of Muslims is different. Unlike the first-generation immigrants, 50% of young Muslims are graduates, with their own political priorities. Far from being seduced by the politics of apathy or pointless protest, they know that the stakes are simply too high – for them and for the country – to not engage. They know it’s their civic duty as Brits, and their religious duty as believers, to vote.

Crucially for Westminster, the Muslim swing vote could be in either direction. Rather than being ideologically committed to one party, many Muslims are value voters – looking at all parties and candidates and asking themselves who represents them most closely. For many Muslims, this isn’t just a “Brexit election” — particularly because they have mixed feelings about the Leave campaign. Whilst incidents of xenophobia are clearly concerning, many Muslims have family in the Commonwealth and are open to Britain pivoting away from Europe and perhaps towards their countries of heritage.

Beyond Brexit, issues like family values are a big part of Muslim culture. Many Muslims grow up in extended families in one neighbourhood or even under one roof. This doesn’t mean, however, that the state doesn’t have a role to play and differing cultural attitudes mean that elderly Muslims sometimes do not access the same care as others.

Other issues like social justice are hardwired into Islam at the theological level. Whilst working on my translation of the Quran, I was amazed at how regularly social justice is mentioned, coming up 31 times. Many Muslims want to live in a society where working class and vulnerable people are protected. It is no coincidence that Muslims are typically the most philanthropic faith community, who give generously to everything from disaster relief to food banks.

Many Muslims are also business owners. In my congregation there are self-employed Uber drivers, takeaway chefs and directors of multi-million pound companies. At the same time as being committed to social justice, they want a strong economy and a tax system that gives incentives for hard work.

Muslim values include democracy, justice, fairness, and tolerance; not only are they the same as our British values, but they are a mix of centre-left and centre-right ideals. With such a wide-ranging political heritage, Muslims can vote for whoever they feel best represents them. In the Dec. 12 election, it is imperative that they do so — to make their voices heard, and move beyond the tribal clan politics that have silenced some in our community in the past.

China Urges the U.S. to “Stop Flexing Muscles” in the South China Sea

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 10:59 PM PST

BANGKOK (AP) — China on Monday urged the U.S. military to “stop flexing muscles” in the disputed South China Sea, a point of persistent friction in a relationship both sides said was generally improving.

A spokesman for the Chinese ministry of defense, Col. Wu Qian, told reporters in Bangkok that the South China Sea was among numerous issues discussed earlier in the day when U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper held his first face-to-face meeting with the Chinese defense minister, Gen. Wei Fenghe. They met for more than half an hour on the margins of a broader Asia defense officials’ conference.

“We agreed to keep talking and engaging frequently,” Esper told reporters afterward in a brief exchange. “We continue to make progress on any number of issues.”

The South China Sea for years has been a major point of contention between Beijing and Washington. China claims the South China Sea as its sovereign territory, but those claims overlap with those of other Asian governments. The United States has no territorial stake but has periodically sailed Navy ships through areas of the sea that China considers off-limits.

Wu, the defense ministry spokesman, told a news conference that Esper and Wei had a “very positive and constructive” meeting and “agreed in many areas.” But he was clear that Beijing is irritated at the U.S. Navy’s presence in the South China Sea. Wu said Wei reaffirmed China’s commitment to safeguarding “territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests” in the South China Sea.

“The Chinese side also urges the U.S. side to stop flexing muscles in the South China Sea and do not provoke and escalate tensions in the South China Sea,” he said through a Chinese interpreter. Asked by a reporter to be more specific about Chinese objections, Wu said the U.S. should “stop intervening in the South China Sea and stop military provocations.”

Asked about China’s view on the civil unrest in Hong Kong, Wu said, “Ending violence and restoring order is the most pressing task we have in Hong Kong.”

Hong Kong Police Storm University Campus Occupied by Protesters as Courts Overturn Mask Ban

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 09:07 PM PST

Police cracked down on Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University Monday after a days-long siege on the protester-occupied campus spawned some of the most violent confrontations since the anti-government demonstrations began six months ago.

Following protracted fighting, several protesters attempted to flee the campus and avoid arrest Monday morning, but were driven back by a barrage of tear gas.

Dozens of people were arrested as clashes broke out nearby the university, including several who were seen detained outside a high-end hotel in the city’s tourist district Tsim Sha Tsui.

An unknown number of students remain hunkered behind the walls of Polytechnic University, which police are not allowing press to access.

As fears of a bloody showdown mount, Hong Kong’s courts granted protesters a major victory Monday, striking down a controversial face mask ban that the government had enacted in October. The High Court found the ban on face coverings at all public gatherings a violation of the territory’s mini-constitution, known as the Basic Law.

Imposed under colonial-era emergency regulations that the government had invoked in hopes of quelling the months-long unrest, the ban instead inflamed public anger and prompted more clashes.

The court’s decision was greeted with cheers on the streets.

“It shows that what the government is doing may not be legal and right, they just want us to feel afraid,” says Billy, 35, a white collar worker who came out to Hong Hom to show his support for protesters trapped inside Polytechnic.

Many family members and friends convened on a footbridge that leads into the campus. Unable to get inside, they hope their sheer presence will send a message to the phalanx of officers gathered nearby. “Release the people,” some shouted.

“My sister is inside,” says Joy, a 29-year-old officer worker who joined the other relatives on the footbridge. “I don’t know what to do. I know I can’t help her get out but I want to be closer to her. My mother is quite worried but I told her to stay home.”

In the city’s central business district as well as in Tsim Sha Tsui, protesters returned to the streets at lunchtime chanting “Save PolyU.” On social media channels used by protesters, calls circulated for allies to come and help however they can. In the surrounding neighborhoods, black-clad protesters barricaded roads with bamboo poles and bricks, attempting to disrupt traffic and divert the police’s attention. The gatherings were met with tear gas.

“The police blocked all the exits, we are unable to go in to help them [the students] come out so we’re trying to come out in different locations, TST, Mongkok, to weaken the power of the police force,” says Grace, a 22-year-old accountant who skipped work to demonstrate.

Protesters have been barricaded inside the fortress-like campus, stockpiling Molotov cocktails and other weapons, since last week after an escalation in the unrest prompted students to hole up in several universities.

A standoff culminated Sunday as the police attempts to enter the campus were met with fierce resistance.

Officers surrounded the university and warned that anyone choosing to remain in the area could be charged with rioting. If met with further attacks, the police threatened they could use live ammunition. At least three people have been shot with live rounds since the demonstrations began.

Undeterred, protesters continued to counter the volleys of tear gas and rubber bullets with gasoline bombs, slingshots and bows and arrows. Clashes went on throughout the night as scores—potentially hundreds—of protesters repelled police advances, including an attempt to get through with an armored vehicle. Smoke billowed above the grounds as barricades were set ablaze. One police officer was stuck in the leg with an arrow, while students said some protesters suffered hypothermia after they were doused by water canons in the night.

As dawn broke, riot police breached the main entrance, reportedly making some arrests. But fiery explosions seen on livefeeds appeared to push the officers back again, at least temporarily.

The Polytechnic University campus, on the end of the Kowloon peninsula, adjoins the the Cross Harbour Tunnel—a vital artery that connects the city’s most populous urban area with the banking and commercial districts of Hong Kong Island. Protesters have forced the tunnel’s closure for days by erecting burning barricades across the tunnel approach roads, razing toll booths and hurling objects from a footbridge that leads from the campus across the toll plaza.

The pitched battles at the university and the looming threat of live rounds mark a sharp escalation in the protests, which started out with peaceful marches in June. The movement has increasingly turned more violent as police attempts to quell the unrest drive more protesters into adopting radical tactics.

Galvanized by the death of a student who fell during demonstrations earlier this month, protesters have shifted from the standard fare of weekend rallies to instead holding daily strikes that have snarled traffic and prompted schools to cancel classes for over a week.

University students, who are at the front lines of the movement, occupied five university campuses last week, fortifying the entrances and seizing the surrounding transport routes. But while the other campuses emptied over the weekend, the hardline holdouts filtered into Polytechnic, preparing for a fight.

Police have appealed to those inside to “drop their weapons,” remove their masks and leave in orderly manner. But it seems unlikely protesters will follow the order, given they would likely be arrested.

In a post circulating on the Telegram social media channels used by protesters, some claiming to be inside the campus have vowed not to surrender.

“Us students will remain until the very last moment,” the post says, before adding, “We would rather die if we don’t have freedom.”

Venice Hit by Record Third Exceptional Tide

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 11:47 AM PST

VENICE, Italy — Venice was hit Sunday by a record third exceptional tide in the same week while other parts of Italy struggled with a series of weather woes, from rain-swollen rivers to high winds to an out-of-season avalanche.

Stores and museums in Venice were mostly closed in the hardest-hit area around St. Mark’s Square, but tourists donned high rubber boots or even hip waders to witness and photograph the spectacle.

Most were disappointed when officials closed the historic square as winds rippled across the rising waters. The doors of the famed St. Mark’s Basilica were securely shut to the public, an authorities took precautions — stacking sandbags in canal-side windows — to prevent salt-laden water from entering the crypt again.

Venice’s Tide Office said the peak tide of 1.5 meters (nearly 5 feet) hit just after 1 p.m. but a weather front off the coast blocked southerly winds from the Adriatic Sea from pushing the tide to the predicted level of 1.6 meters (5 feet, 2 inches). By early evening, the level was less than a meter (three feet).

Still it marked the third time since Tuesday night’s 1.87-meter flood — the worst in 53 years — that water levels in Venice had topped 1.5 meters. Since records began in 1872, that level had never been reached even twice in one year, let alone three times in one week.

While Venetians had a bit of relief, days of heavy rainfall and snowfall elsewhere in Italy swelled rivers to worrisome levels, triggered an avalanche in the Alps and saw dramatic rescues of people unable to flee rising waters.

In Venice, many store owners in the swanky area around St. Mark’s completely emptied their shops, while others put their wares as high as possible and counted on automatic pumping systems to keep the water at bay. In one luxury boutique, employees used water vacuums and big squeegee mops to keep the brackish lagoon waters from advancing.

Venice’s mayor has put the flooding damage at hundreds of millions of euros and Italian officials have declared a state of emergency for the area. They say Venice is both sinking into the mud and facing rising sea levels due to climate change.

Luca D’Acunto and his girlfriend Giovanna Maglietta surveyed the rising water from a bridge, wondering how to reach their nearby hotel in their colorful yet inadequate rubber boots.

“We made the reservation this week before the floods and had paid already, so we came,” said D’Acunto, a 28-year-old from Naples. “Instead of a romantic trip, we’ll have an adventurous one.”

Most museums were closed as a precaution, but the Correr Museum, which overlooks St. Mark’s Square and explores the art and history of Venice, remained open. Tourists enjoyed a Venetian Spritz — a colorful aperitif with an Italian bitter and Prosecco — as the waters rose.

Officials said 280 civil protection volunteers were deployed to assist as needed. Young Venetian volunteers in rubber boots have also showed up at key sites, including the city’s Music Conservatory, to help save precious manuscripts from the invading salt water.

The flooding has raised renewed debates about the city’s Moses flood defense project, a corruption-riddled underwater barrier system that is still not operational after more than 16 years of construction and at least 5 billion euros (€5.5 billion) of public funding. It was supposed to be working by 2011.

Floods were also hitting other parts of Italy on Sunday.

In Pisa, famed for its Leaning Tower, workers sandbagged the road along the rising Arno River, which authorities said had reached the highest level there and in another Tuscan city, Florence, since 1992.

“I ask citizens to go home and stay there,’’ Pisa Mayor Michele Conti, said in an appeal on state TV. He said bridges were being closed as a precaution in case the Arno overran its banks. Pisa’s offices and stores were ordered shuttered until midday Monday.

The Arno also surged through the heart of historic Florence, reaching a level near the Uffizi Galleries that was described as the highest in some 20 years. In 24 hours, 6.26 centimeters (2.5 inches) of rain had fallen in Florence, which was whipped by winds as high as 76 kilometers per hour (42 mph).

A popular Florence tourist attraction, the Boboli Gardens, was closed as a precaution for fear of falling trees. Near the Tuscan town of Cecina, 500 people were evacuated when a local river swelled to the top of its banks.

Elsewhere in Tuscany, 2,000 people were ordered evacuated in Grosseto as the Ombrone river swelled dangerously. Near Grosseto, firefighters rescued a man clinging to a tree as floodwaters surrounded him.

In the countryside outside of Bologna, in the central-north Emilia Romagna region, an elderly couple was plucked to safety by a helicopter when the Idice river overran its banks.

In Italy’s mountainous Alto Adige, or South Tyrol region, a mid-autumn snowstorm triggered power outages and blocked roads in several Alpine valleys. The mayor of Val Martello, Georg Altstaetter, told state TV that an avalanche had damaged two houses but caused no injuries. Other homes were evacuated as a precaution in the town, which was left without electricity.

The region’s governor told people to stay home so crews could clear snow-clogged roads.

A windstorm overnight in the Rome area toppled scores of trees, with two falling on cars, severely injuring a motorist.

Some politicians lamented that the drama over Venice’s high tides was eclipsing the needs of other areas.

In Matera, a once-impoverished southern town that has experienced a renaissance through tourism, heavy rain sent torrents of mud racing through its streets last week, ruining shops and lodging.

“There are no minor-league regions,” said Luigi Di Maio, a populist who leads the 5-Star Movement, the government’s main party.

Prince Andrew Says He Doesn’t Regret His ‘Very Useful’ Relationship With Jeffrey Epstein

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 11:30 AM PST

Prince Andrew’s recent attempts to clarify his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein have backfired, sparking even more criticism about his lack of remorse about the wealthy financier’s actions. Epstein died August in an apparent suicide in a federal jail after being convicted on sex trafficking charges involving minors.

Prince Andrew was grilled by journalist Emily Maitlis in a BBC interview broadcasted Saturday on his alleged friendship with Epstein. Multiple photographs showing Andrew and Epstein together on different occasions have previously surfaced, raising questions about how close the two were.

Matlis asked whether the prince regretted his relationship with Epstein. Andrew said he didn’t, explaining that, “the people that I met and the opportunities that I was given to learn either by him or because of him were actually very useful.” He added that he and Epstein were not “that close.”

Prince Andrew also acknowledged during the BBC interview that he had been on Epstein’s private plane and private island and that Epstein was his guest at Windsor Castle and Sandringham, which the interviewer said showed that he was “brought right into the heart of the royal family.”

Maitlis also pressed the prince on why he stayed at Epstein’s mansion in New York for several days in 2010 after Epstein was convicted, even as he said the purpose of the trip was to cut ties with the wealthy financier. Andrew sighed before saying that “it was a convenient place to stay.” He admitted that he did regret the trip but not the whole relationship.

Andrew has repeatedly denied allegations about him made by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who said she was trafficked by Epstein, and that the prince had sex with her when she was 17 years old. Giuffre has said, according to court documents, that she had been ordered to have sex with Andrew by Epstein’s former girlfriend and longtime friend Ghislaine Maxwell. Earlier this year, she said about Prince Andrew that “he knows exactly what he’s done and I hope he comes clean about it.”

Asked about Giuffre during the BBC interview, Prince Andrew responded: “I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady.”

He said that “if push came to shove” and legal advice recommended he testify or give a statement under oath, that he would do so. “I think there’s just as much closure for me as there is for everybody else,” he said.

Prince Andrew also said he let the royal family down by meeting Epstein even after he was convicted of soliciting a minor. “I kick myself for, on a daily basis, because it was not something that was becoming of a member of the royal family,” he said. “And we try and uphold the highest standards and practices and I let the side down, simple as that.”

Leaked Report on Russian Interference in Brexit Vote Raises Questions Ahead of U.K. Elections

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 09:13 AM PST

LONDON — Questions about the British government’s failure to release a report on Russia’s interference in the country’s politics continued to dog Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday as critics said leaks from the document raised concerns about the security of next month’s election.

The report from Parliament’s intelligence committee concludes that Russian interference may have affected the 2016 referendum on Britain’s departure from the European Union, though the impact is “unquantifiable,” the Times of London reported without saying how it got the information.

The committee said British intelligence services failed to devote enough resources to counter the threat and highlighted the impact of articles posted by Russian new sites that were widely disseminated on social media, the newspaper reported.

Emily Thornberry, the opposition Labour Party’s foreign affairs spokeswoman, said the leaks raise questions that deserve answers.

“Boris Johnson therefore needs to clear up the confusion, spin and speculation around this (intelligence committee) report by publishing it in full at the earliest opportunity,’’ she told the Times. “If not, people will rightly continue to ask: what is he trying to hide from the British public and why?”

Johnson’s government has said it needs more time to review the security implications of the report, but it will be released after the election. Critics have alleged the report is being withheld because it shows Russians have made large donations to the Conservative Party, which is seeking to win a majority that would allow Johnson to push his Brexit deal through Parliament.

Security Minister Brandon Lewis dismissed such criticism and in turn accused Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn of failing to back the government in the aftermath of a Russian-sponsored nerve agent attack against a former spy on the streets of an English city.

Asked about Russian donors to the campaign, Lewis told Sky television on Sunday that all contributions are reported to the proper authorities and the donors in question are have British citizenship.

“We should not prevent British citizens from taking and playing their full part in British political life,” he said.

Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the 2016 U.S. presidential election found that Russia interfered in the vote in a “sweeping and systemic” fashion. While President Donald Trump dismissed the findings, the U.S. investigation put Russia at the center of worries about the integrity of elections worldwide.

The House of Commons Intelligence and Security Committee began its investigation following allegations of Russian interference in both the 2016 U.S. election and the Brexit referendum earlier that year.

The committee sent its report to Johnson for review on Oct. 17, saying it expected to “publish the report imminently.”

Committee Chairman Dominic Grieve has criticized Johnson’s government for failing to release the document amid media reports it has already been cleared by British security services.

The debate comes amid growing concerns about the security of elections fought in an increasingly digital world. Britain’s election laws were written for a time when campaigns pushed mass-produced leaflets through mail slots, rather than flooding Facebook and Twitter accounts with individually targeted messages.

Johnson called the early election in response to the political turmoil caused by Britain’s pending departure from the EU. Britain’s 46 million eligible voters will choose 650 lawmakers in the House of Commons in the Dec. 12 vote.

Iran Supreme Leader Warns of Potential Crackdown on ‘Thugs’ Amid Deadly Gas Price Protests

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 07:32 AM PST

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran’s supreme leader on Sunday backed the government’s decision to raise gasoline prices and called angry protesters who have been setting fire to public property over the hike “thugs,” signaling a potential crackdown on the demonstrations.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s comments came as authorities shut down the internet across Iran to smother the protests in some two dozen cities and towns over the rise of government-set prices by 50% as of Friday. One firm said it was the biggest internet outage ever seen in Iran.

Since the hike, demonstrators have abandoned their cars along major highways and joined mass protests in the capital, Tehran, and elsewhere. Some protests turned violent, with demonstrators setting fires and there was also gunfire.

It remains to be seen how many people have been injured, killed and arrested as videos from the protests have shown people gravely wounded.

Iranian authorities on Sunday raised the official death toll in the violence surrounding the unrest to at least two. Attackers targeting a police station in Kermanshah on Saturday killed one officer there, the state-run IRNA news agency reported Sunday. Earlier, one man was reported killed.

In an address aired by state television Sunday, Khamenei said “some lost their lives and some places were destroyed,” without elaborating. He called violent protesters “thugs” who had been pushed into violence by counterrevolutionaries and foreign enemies of Iran. He specifically named those aligned with the family of Iran’s late shah, ousted 40 years ago, and an exile group called the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq.

“Setting a bank on fire is not an act done by the people. This is what thugs do,” Khamenei said.

However, he made a point to back the decision of Iran’s relatively moderate President Hassan Rouhani and others to raise gasoline prices. Gasoline in the country still remains among the cheapest in the world, with the new prices jumping up to a minimum of 15,000 rials per liter of gas — 50% up from the day before. That’s 13 cents a liter, or about 50 cents a gallon. A gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. costs $2.60 by comparison.

Khamenei ordered security forces “to implement their tasks” and for Iran’s citizens to keep clear of violent demonstrators.

That seemed to indicate a possible crackdown could be looming. Economic protests in late 2017 into 2018 were met by a heavy reaction by the police and the Basij, the all-volunteer force of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

“Such illegal actions would not solve any problem but add insecurity on top of other problems,” Khamenei said. “Lack of security is the biggest calamity for any country and society. That is what they are looking for.”

Iran’s Intelligence Ministry said the “key perpetrators of the past two days’ riot have been identified and proper action is ongoing.”

The protests have put renewed pressure on Iran’s government as it struggles to overcome U.S. sanctions strangling the country’s economy since President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers over a year ago.

Though largely peaceful, the latest demonstrations devolved into violence in several instances, with online videos purporting to show police officers firing tear gas at protesters and mobs setting fires.

While representing a political risk for Rouhani ahead of February parliamentary elections, they also show widespread anger among Iran’s 80 million people who have seen their savings evaporate amid scarce jobs and the collapse of the national currency, the rial.

Cheap gasoline is practically considered a birthright in Iran, home to the world’s fourth-largest crude oil reserves. Rouhani had been pushing for higher prices to offer payments to the poor for months. While the hike was eventually expected, the decision to raise gasoline prices still caught many by surprise and sparked immediate demonstrations overnight.

Iranian internet access meanwhile saw disruptions and outages Friday night into Saturday, according to the group NetBlocks, which monitors worldwide internet access. By Saturday night, “real-time network data show connectivity has fallen to just 7% of ordinary levels following 12 hours of progressive network disconnections as public protests have continued across the country,” NetBlocks said.

“The ongoing disruption is the most severe recorded in Iran since President Rouhani came to power, and the most severe disconnection tracked by NetBlocks in any country in terms of its technical complexity and breadth,” the group said. The internet firm Oracle called it “the largest internet shutdown ever observed in Iran.”

The semi-official ISNA news agency reported Sunday that Iran’s Supreme National Security Council ordered a “restriction of access” to the internet nationwide, without elaborating.

Protester chants seen in online videos mirrored many from the economic protests in late 2017, which resulted in nearly 5,000 reported arrests and at least 25 people killed. Some criticized Iran’s spending abroad on Palestinians and others while the country’s people remain poor.

The tensions in Iran came as weeks of anti-government protests have engulfed Iraq and Lebanon, two Mideast nations that are home to Iranian proxies and crucial to Tehran’s influence abroad.

Iran long has suffered economic problems since its 1979 Islamic Revolution cut off the country’s decades-long relationship with the U.S. Iran’s eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s followed, further straining its economy.

The collapse of the nuclear deal has exacerbated those problems. The Iranian rial, which traded at 32,000 to $1 at the time of the accord, fell to 122,600 to $1 in trading on Saturday. Iran has since begun breaking terms of the deal as it tries to force Europe to come up with a way to allow it to sell crude oil abroad despite American sanctions.

The U.S. so far has had a muted response to the protests, with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeting overnight: “As I said to the people of Iran almost a year and a half ago: The United States is with you.”

In Dubai, the new U.S. ambassador to the United Arab Emirates told The Associated Press that America was “not advocating regime change. We are going to let the Iranian people decide for themselves their future.”

“They are frustrated. They want freedom,” Ambassador John Rakolta said at the Dubai Airshow. “These developments that you see right now are their own people telling them, ‘We need change and to sit down with the American government.’”

Hong Kong Protesters Fight Off Police With Fire and Arrows

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 07:04 AM PST

HONG KONG — A Hong Kong police officer was hit in the leg by an arrow and protesters set an overhead footbridge on fire Sunday as they fought to keep police using tear gas and water cannons from advancing on their university campus stronghold.

Police said the arrow struck a media liaison officer in the calf and he was taken to a hospital. Photos on the department’s Facebook page show the arrow sticking out of the back of the officer’s leg through his pants.

As riot police moved in from all sides, some protesters retreated inside Hong Kong Polytechnic University while others set fires on bridges leading to it.

A huge blaze burned along much of a long footbridge that connects a train station to the campus over the approach to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, a major road under Hong Kong’s harbor that has been blocked by the protesters for days.

The use of bows and arrows, along with a gasoline bombs launched with catapults, threatened to escalate the violence in the more than five-month-long anti-government movement. Protesters are trying to keep the pressure on Hong Kong leaders, who have rejected most of their demands.

The protests were sparked by proposed legislation that would have allowed the extradition of criminal suspects to the mainland. Activists saw it as an erosion of Hong Kong’s autonomy under the “one country, two systems” formula implemented in 1997, when Britain returned the territory to China.

The bill has been withdrawn, but the protests have expanded into a wider resistance movement against what is perceived as the growing control of Hong Kong by Communist China, along with calls for full democracy for the territory.

Several hundred people formed a human chain Sunday in central Hong Kong in a peaceful rally in support of the movement.

Azaze Chung, a university student, said the government should respond to the protesters’ demands, not just use force against them.

Police and protesters faced off all day outside Polytechnic after a pitched battle the previous night in which the two sides exchanged tear gas and gasoline bombs that left fires blazing in the street.

A large group of people arrived in the morning to try to clean up the road but were warned away by protesters. Riot police shot several volleys of tear gas at the protesters, who sheltered behind a wall of umbrellas and threw gasoline bombs into nearby bushes and trees, setting them on fire.

The protesters held their ground for most of the day, as water cannon trucks drove over bricks and nails strewn by protesters to spray them at close range — some with water dyed blue to help police identify protesters afterward.

Protesters began retreating into the university near sunset, fearing they would be trapped as police fired tear gas volleys and approached from other directions. The protesters have barricaded the entrances to the campus and set up narrow access control points.

They are the holdouts from larger groups that occupied several major campuses for much of last week.

Another group threw bricks in the street to block a main thoroughfare in the Mongkok district, as police fired tear gas to try to disperse them. The disruption to Nathan Road traffic may have been an attempt to distract police during the standoff at Polytechnic.

Opposition lawmakers criticized the Chinese military for joining a cleanup to remove debris from streets near Hong Kong Baptist University on Saturday.

Dozens of Chinese troops, dressed in black shorts and olive drab T-shirts, ran out in loose formation and picked up paving stones, rocks and other obstacles that had cluttered the street

The military is allowed to help maintain public order, but only at the request of the Hong Kong government. The government said that it had not requested the military’s assistance, describing it as a voluntary community activity.

The Education Bureau announced that classes from kindergarten to high school would be suspended again on Monday because of safety concerns. Classes have been canceled since Thursday, after the bureau came under criticism for not doing so earlier.

Rahul Bhatia fires fresh salvo at partner in IndiGo dogfight

Posted:

72102285 Mumbai: IndiGo cofounder Rahul Bhatia, seeking a court order to obtain documents from his partner Rakesh Gangwal, has alleged that he has a "history of being uncooperative and obstructive" with petitioners' requests.Bhatia made the claim in his latest request to the US district court of Florida to accept his application for documents from his partner to be used in a separate case he filed in the London Court of International Arbitration."There are reasons to believe that the respondents (Gangwal camp) will not timely or fully comply with the LCIA tribunal's discovery requests, notwithstanding assurances to the contrary made to this court," Bhatia's counsel said in his re-application. "This belief is built on Mr Gangwal's history of being uncooperative and obstructive with respect to petitioners' requests."In the LCIA case filed in October, Bhatia alleged that Gangwal breached the shareholders' agreement signed between the two founders of India's biggest airline by market share.Bhatia's re-application was filed on November 15, after Gangwal, a US resident, requested last week that the first application, filed by Bhatia on October 16, be rejected. ET has reviewed the documents.Emails sent to Gangwal and a spokesperson for Bhatia remained unanswered before the story went to pressIn Gangwal's application, his counsel said that under the LCIA case, an arbitral tribunal would be set up shortly and it would issue an order for disclosure of all relevant documents and testimony from both parties. 72101540 Stating that Gangwal will cooperate with the document disclosure procedures laid down by the arbitral tribunal, the counsel said Bhatia's application is unnecessary and redundant and "a blatant attempt to 'jump the gun' and get one-sided discovery outside the framework created by the arbitration clause."In the re-application, Bhatia's counsel also cited a case that expanded the scope of Section 1782, the law invoked in his discovery application, to include "administrative and quasi-judicial proceedings" abroad in addition to court proceedings in the definition of "foreign tribunal."Gangwal's lawyers had said the law invoked 'does not apply to private commercial arbitrations.'Bhatia's counsel cited examples of Gangwal's alleged uncooperative and obstructive stance, saying he had rejected "requests" to remove updates of his feud with Bhatia from his website and to not make further public disclosures to 'third parties' in connection with IndiGo or the arbitration claimants.Gangwal also has so far failed to produce any documents to substantiate the allegations underlying his complaints to the Securities and Exchange Board of India, Bhatia's lawyer Dheeraj Nair said in his accompanying declaration. When the IndiGo board, including Gangwal, unanimously decided on July 20, 2019, to expand its size to 10 members from six and notified the stock exchanges, Gangwal changed his mind two days later and declared that the resolution be unwound, Nair added.IndiGo's two founders have been locked in a public feud for the better part of this year over issues including shareholder rights – the selection and appointment of IndiGo's chairman and key management personnel – enjoyed and allegedly misused by Bhatia, alleged related-party transactions between IndiGo and companies affiliated to Bhatia's IGE Group, and the absence of a woman director. After board meetings where most of the issues were discussed and appeared to be resolved, Bhatia moved the LCIA in October and then approached the Florida court.

A retirement mistake you should never make

Posted:

By Dhirendra KumarWhenever I write or speak about retirement savings, I'm always stunned by the volume and nature of the responses I get. More and more people are worried about how they will make ends meet after retirement. With falling interest rates, the problem is not going to go away anytime soon.In the words of a Wall Streeter as quoted by Warren Buffett, "Those who're looking for risk-free returns are more likely to find returns-free risk." While the original statement was intended for US bond investors, it's even more true of Indian retirees, or potential retirees. It is a deep belief amongst Indian savers, investors and investment advisers that retirement savings should be invested with the lowest risk possible. In the abstract, this is an excellent urge to have, and one could hardly disagree with it. However, in practice, the impact of this obsession with zero-risk is terrible. The reason for that is that everyone ignores the risk posed by the biggest threat to your financial well being, which is inflation. Sorry to put it so bluntly, but if you ignore the effects of inflation on your retirement savings, then you are heading for old-age poverty. The normal Indian way of thinking about retirement investing is that one must not tolerate even the minutest drop in the nominal value of one's investment, all the while ignoring that inflation is constantly reducing its real value by anything ranging from 5-12% a year. There are a lucky few who have some sort of an inherently inflationproof source of income—like property which fetches good rent. Everyone else must fight a lifelong battle against this relentless financial enemy. The risk that people talk about is based on a casual impression of volatility. Equities may be volatile, but for any investment over a few years, the volatility gets more than compensated for by returns. For a long-term investment, short-term volatility is not of concern. Take the example of the decade gone by. A typical fixed income option would have yielded a return of a little more than 8%. An investment of Rs 10,000 a month would have grown to about Rs 18-19 lakh. Over the same period, an average (far from the best) equity fund would have grown to Rs 25 lakh, a return of about 14%. Extend this kind of a differential over three decades and the equity option would generate about 2.5 to 3 times what the fixed income option would generate. Please read that again. This kind of a difference between returns would make the difference between a saver starting retired life in prosperity versus always struggling to make ends meet. The thing to realise is that saving for retirement is a long-term goal. There is no earthly reason to think of it differently from any other investment in the same time range.Actually, the time horizon of retirement savings is even longer than we generally suppose. People take the date of retire ment as the target date of the investment. However, retirement may be an event in your life, but from a savings and investment perspective, it is not an event but the beginning of a long stretch of retired life. At the age of 55, you may think that retirement is just a decade away so your retirement kitty should be in 'non-risky' investments, but actually that doesn't make any sense. You will be using the earnings from these investments when you are 65, 75, 85 or 95 years old. Retirement can be a very long time. The years from 60 to the end of a full life can be as long as 30 or 35 years. That's as much as your working life. In those 30 or 35 years, prices would again multiply five to seven times, maybe more. Worse, you're likely to face unpredictable and growing medical bills, which is a major component of real inflation that people face in their lives.Savers who want to successfully provide for their old age must think through these issues clearly and abandon the trap that conventional thinking leads them into.(The writer is CEO, Value Research)

How Henna is helping China get its trade right

Posted:

NEW DELHI: Indian henna powder, chillies, value-added tea and moringa (drumstick) powder have caught the fancy of the country's second largest trading partner China and the Asian giant is keen to import these agricultural products from India.Chinese importers raised inquiries about these value-added farm products at the recently concluded import only fair in Shanghai.A Tamil Nadu-based exporter of henna powder booked orders above Rs 3 crore at the second edition of the China International Import Expo in Shanghai on November 5-10."There were a lot of enquiries about agricultural products, especially drumsticks powder for herbal uses, chilies and value-added tea such as tea sticks. We placed orders worth a few million dollars," said an official.India exported around $200 million of these products in April-September 2019-20.The import only expo is aimed to reduce China's burgeoning trade deficit with its major trading partners. It expects to import products and services valuing over $10 trillion through such fairs.India's exports to China in the first six months of 2019-20 were $8.5 billion while imports were $36.3 billion. The trade deficit was $53.6 billion in FY19."They want us to provide organic certification for such agricultural goods because demand for organic products is huge there," the official added. The main product categories in the expo were sci-tech life, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment & healthcare products, automobile, equipment, quality life, trade in services, food and agriculture products.

Flipkart & Amazon clock Rs 31,000 cr in festive sales

Posted:

BENGALURU: India's top two web retailers Flipkart and Amazon clocked combined sales of Rs 31,000 crore ($4.3 billion) during the crucial 15-day festival period in October, according to a report by Red-Seer Consulting that ET has exclusively accessed. The number fell short of analyst expectations of $5 billion in sales. The average order value for Flipkart stood at Rs 1,976 versus Rs 1,461 on Amazon, indicating that customers bought higher-value items from the Walmart-owned marketplace. Flipkart led with 64% share of the combined gross sales while Amazon continued to fare higher in net promoter score (NPS). NPS measures the loyalty of customers to a company.ET has reviewed the findings. RedSeer declined to comment on the report citing confidentiality.Gross sales, or gross merchandise value (GMV) in industry parlance, missed analyst estimates by 14%. The two ecommerce marketplaces had been aiming for $5 billion in sales collectively during the festival period, according to estimates made by analysts and internal targets set by these companies, ET reported on September 4.As for the gap between Flipkart and Amazon, it grew narrower in terms of gross units shipped. Flipkart's share in terms of units stood at 56% while Amazon's share was 44%, the report highlighted. 72101613 Neck and Neck in MetrosBetter availability and variety of electronics and fashion items improved NPS for Amazon, while Flipkart led on the back of strong performance in smaller cities, RedSeer's client report indicated. Customer cancellations were also lower on Amazon, but Flipkart's reach and brand recall in smaller towns and cities was better, said the report.Interestingly, both companies are neck and neck in the metros, with Amazon leading by a percentage point."We are humbled that Amazon.in is... also becoming an important driver for the new digital economy in the country," Amit Agarwal, country head, Amazon India, said in an official blog post.Flipkart said expectations had been more than met."This festive period we exceeded all customer metrics we measure ourselves against," a Flipkart spokesperson said in a statement. The festive sale period helps etailers shore up sales as this is when consumers plan large-value purchases and are also traditionally more open to spending on new items. This year, the wider retail ecosystem was also closely watching the performance of etailers, given that this has been the first large event for these etailers after the revised ecommerce policy kicked in on February 1 barring online marketplaces and their group companies from predatory pricing in any form. While both companies had denied any impact of the economic slowdown on their sale numbers, the report indicated that the overall internet market grew at a slower rate. "Year-on-year growth for festive season came down due to a tough macroeconomic environment and decreased overall consumer spending," the report said.Online retail is wooing consumers outside the big cities."It is clear that ecommerce companies are getting growth from locations where traditional retail presence doesn't even exist," said an investor in the ecommerce space. "The good news is that the market is growing but at the same time, how much deeper can you go and take additional wallet share from the metro cities, which hold the bulk of the high-value consumers, and therefore higher margins remains a concern."Units sold increased 60% over last year to 110 million in the first leg of the sale, while the average selling price decreased by 23% to Rs 1,680."Unit sales were higher than gross sales due to slow growth in new smartphone users, wider selection in fashion and long-tail categories," the report indicated. While the number of transactions per user was higher on Amazon for the current year, Flipkart's leadership was boosted by an uptick in smaller towns and cities (tier 2 cities and beyond) where it was four times bigger than its rival in terms of GMV or gross sales.Separately, Snapdeal's GMV grew to Rs 164 crore in its Sale 1 on the back of fashion and long-tail categories, with almost 85% shoppers from tier 2 areas. GMV is overall sales clocked by an online marketplace and does not include discounts, returns, cancellations and cashback on products sold. It is distinct from revenue.

Shaktikanta Das faces an increasingly tough balancing act

It's an appropriate adornment.Das, overseeing what was until recently the world's fastest-growing major economy, has worked tirelessly to restore relations with the government after a bitter public spat led his predecessor Urjit Patel to quit. Colleagues say Das usually tucks papers under his arms at the end of the work day to continue plugging away from home. He's paid a hefty dividend to the finance ministry, swung into stimulus mode and eased up on bank lending restrictions -- all of which Patel resisted in the face of government pressure. But there's still much to do: the economy is losing steam on many fronts, the banking sector remains saddled with one of the world's worst bad-debt loads and the government's fiscal targets are slipping by the day.Insiders say Das has turned around the mood in the bank's Mumbai headquarters with an affable, plain-spoken approach. As one official said: He listens to everyone and then sticks to his own decision.Among the RBI rank and file, the more academically-decorated predecessors of Patel and Raghuram Rajan were considered outsiders due to their long stints in American academia. Long-timers were put offside as in-house talent was often bypassed in senior appointments. Not with Das: in the job posting for a deputy in-charge of monetary policy, at least 25 years of government experience within India tops the priority list among requirements for the role.Rajan and Patel were contrasting personalities -- Rajan the rockstar of global central banking and Patel reclusive both inside and outside the bank. Silver-haired Das strikes a balance. He has his own Twitter account and is more open to the media, giving interviews to local and foreign media including Bloomberg News. But he hasn't taken to the global stage in the way Rajan did, such as when he led criticism of the Federal Reserve in 2014 for not taking into account the spillovers of its policies on emerging markets.Das's communication skills have helped improve the relationship with the government. The two sides no longer spar in public and instead resolve issues internally, finance ministry officials said. A recent example being the central bank's reservations toward the finance ministry's proposal for what would have been India's first overseas sovereign bond issue. The proposal, which also met with opposition from within Prime Minister Narendra Modi's own party, has been frozen. The Reserve Bank of India has an out-sized role in the nation's economy, making central bank-government friction a feature of policy making in the nation. Das is responsible for monetary policy, an exchange rate that's near historic lows, supervising banks that carry one of the world's biggest bad-debt loads, and selling bonds the government relies on to fund its yawning deficits. Most major central banks have only one or two of those duties."Some of the functions that the RBI juggles with are in conflict," said Amartya Lahiri, Royal Bank Professor of Economics at the University of British Columbia, who was recruited during Patel's time to lead the RBI's in-house think tank. "This isn't ideal if one has to build a credible and independent institution."It was a battle over independence that led to Patel's early departure on Dec. 10. The cerebral and introverted Yale University-trained economist had sought to continue his predecessor Rajan's efforts to clean up the nation's financial sector by tightening wasteful lending by state banks and was keen to keep the RBI's balance sheet as robust as possible in case of crisis. But as the economy slowed through 2018 and with a general election looming, Modi's government pressed the RBI to loosen up lending restrictions to boost growth and to transfer surplus funds at the central bank.Das, appointed on Dec. 11 for a three-year term, set about changing course almost immediately. In one of his first decisions announced in early January, he instructed banks to restructure stressed loans given to small and medium-scale enterprises, thus breaking from a five-year-old policy of eschewing corporate debt overhauls. That was quickly followed up by lifting lending restrictions on three state-run banks.72102270 In February, in his first meeting of the six-member monetary policy committee that he chairs, Das along with three other members voted for a 25 basis point interest-rate cut. And in a sharp reversal from October last year, when the MPC led by Patel had taken rate cuts off the table, Das opened the door for more reductions and said reviving growth was the main priority of the inflation-targeting central bank. He's cut five times this year, by a cumulative 135 basis points.A test of Das's ability to keep the government onside now presents itself given inflation has climbed back above the central bank's medium-term target of 4%. The consumer price index bottomed out at 2% in January and was 4.6% in October. Despite the price revival, economists expect Das to stay in easing mode, and see the benchmark interest rate falling to 4.9% by the end of March 2020.Das also heeded the government's call for higher dividends, paying a record $24 billion to government coffers in August. But the RBI's pockets aren't infinite and at some stage in the future Das may have to stare down any further requests for bumper payouts.Das is also in-charge of the exchange rate, and its management has in the past angered government officials and the export lobby, which complain about the rupee's competitiveness. Das, like Patel, has reiterated the oft-repeated central bank approach that India's exchange rate is market-driven and the RBI has no target in mind.72102277 It's the RBI's role as regulator of the country's banking system that creates the most potential for conflict with the government, because about 60% of the business is controlled by state-run banks. They are owned by the government and the RBI has limited supervision and legal powers to bring about changes in management to these banks, unlike the privately-owned ones where it holds more sway. That creates an uneven playing field leading to question marks over the efficacy of the central bank independence in regulating banks.Patel's RBI was criticized for keeping financial conditions tight and failing to detect lapses in shadow lenders and banks on time. A large shadow bank failed last year, an event that triggered a chain of defaults in the financial sector and saw shadow banks withdraw from the lending space. Consumption took a beating as hundreds of millions of poorer Indians rely on shadow finance, dragging economic growth to a six-year low of 5%.Das has assured investors that another large-scale collapse won't be allowed in the shadow-banking sector. The RBI has asked for greater powers over the so-called non-bank finance companies, something the government has granted. What really sets the RBI apart from many of its counterparts, especially in the west, is its role as the investment banker to the government. That creates potential for priorities in one realm to influence other areas of its mandate. For instance, the RBI may be encouraged to keep interest rates low to help manage the government's borrowing, even though inflation targets might come under threat, risking macro-economic and financial stability.Under Patel, the central bank bought a bulk of the federal government's borrowing requirements, although he warned about the crowding out effect on private investments from large public debt issuance. Under Das, the borrowing program has proceeded without much of a hitch so far, helped by easier financial conditions.72102284 "Whether the management of the public debt should be with the RBI is a controversial issue," said C. Rangarajan, governor at the RBI from 1992 to 1997. "We had recommended if the government wanted to take over they can do it. The only issue is there is the need for certain expertise in handling this and RBI by virtue of performing this function over a long time has the experience."Das has so far managed to juggle these multiple and often conflicting roles. But as the economy slows, bad debt piles up and the budget deficit target goes out the window, it'll be a tough to keep all the balls in the air."Being a full-service central bank with a broad span of responsibilities gives the RBI more power and influence, but also makes it more subject to the pulls of political tides," said Eswar Prasad, professor in the Dyson School at Cornell University and an ex-official at the International Monetary Fund. "The risk of having multiple responsibilities is that poor performance in one dimension can strain the institution's credibility and effectiveness in other dimensions."This is the first in a series of stories looking at the challenges confronting Asia's three biggest central banks. The Bank of Japan's struggle to reflate the economy is explored on Tuesday and the People's Bank of China's balancing act between stimulus and debt control is examined on Wednesday.

Software isn’t manufacturing, won’t be eligible for 15% tax

Posted:

NEW DELHI: Software development is not manufacturing and will not be eligible for the 15% tax rate applicable to new manufacturing entities, a government official said. The government will table a Bill in Parliament in the upcoming winter session to clarify this and other related matters. The Bill will replace its earlier ordinance in September."The amendment Bill will clarify that 15% corporate tax rate is only for new manufacturing entities and that software development is not manufacturing," the official, who is privy to the development, told ET.The amendment comes after industry sought clarity on whether software development could be treated as manufacturing and be eligible for the reduced tax rate. 72101556 On September 20, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman slashed the corporate tax rate to 22% for companies that do not seek exemptions or incentives, and to 15% — from the current 25% — for new manufacturing companies.Any new domestic company incorporated on or after October 1 making fresh investment in manufacturing and starting operations before March 31, 2023, will pay tax at 15%.The reduction has made the country one of the lowest tax jurisdictions in South and Southeast Asia. The government is also likely to clarify a host of other things, including on unabsorbed depreciation and accumulated Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) credit in the proposed Bill. It will further clarify that carry forward loss will also not be allowed in case an amalgamated entity opts for the 22% corporate tax rate without incentives. The government issued a circular in October specifying that a company opting for the reduced rate of 22% cannot avail of accumulated MAT credit. This will also be part of the proposed amendments.Manufacturing has been defined in other sections of the Income Tax Act, but the latest ordinance does not include a definition or refer to one.A Supreme Court judgement has, however, made it clear that manufacturing means a change, bringing into existence a new and distinct object or article or thing with a different chemical composition or integral structure.Only new manufacturing companies are eligible for the revised rate. The provision excludes entities formed by splitting up or reconstructing a business already in existence. An exception, however, has been provided for natural or man made calamities, riots and fire that require an entity to be re-established, reconstructed or revived on or after October 1.

5 stocks that foreign portfolio investors are buying now

Posted:

After months of selling, foreign portfolio investors (FPI) are buying Indian equity again. Net inflows as of 11 November stood at over Rs 30,000 crore. The question now is whether this FPI inflow will continue in the coming months. Experts feel it will due to several factors. First, the liquidity crisis in the domestic financial system is easing on the back of increased government spending over the past few months. There had been a contraction of government spending due to elections and new government formation, but it has picked up again from July. The next reason is Indian companies have been able to show significant improvement in operating margins due to the fall in commodity prices. This along with the reduction in corporate tax rates, helped companies report fabulous net profit growth. Since lower tax impact is a permanent feature, net profit growth is likely to be better in the coming quarters. The third factor that is attracting FPIs now are the government's measures to stimulate the economy. "Favourable factors are attracting smart money back to Indian markets. This trend will continue if the government continues with its reform measures," says Kunj Bansal, Partner & CIO, Acepro Sarthi Group.A favourable global economic setting, like the US Federal Reserve cutting rates, etc is also channeling inflows to emerging markets like India. "Due to the global slowdown and lack of opportunities in developed markets, global investors have turned positive towards emerging markets, including India," says Vinod Nair, Head of Fundamental Research, Geojit Financial Services. Since global investors are chasing growth now, will the ongoing economic slowdown in India derail these inflows? The answer is no. "GDP growth for the September quarter may be even below 5%. However, FPI inflows may not get impacted due to this slower growth, because our growth rates are still better compared to other countries," says Bansal.FPIs are buying after months of selling 72082648 Historically, FPIs have bought into large cap counters. However, it is different this time and they are now concentrating more on mid-cap counters and that is one reason why the market cap of all stocks shortlisted for this story are below Rs 30,000 crore. A concentrated large-cap rally during the past year and the resultant high valuation are the reasons why FPIs are bypassing large-caps. "FPIs' current mid-cap focus is because correction has brought down the valuation there. Since valuation in this segment is still favourable, this trend is expected to continue in the medium to long term," says Nair.We have used several filters to shortlist stocks that have witnessed an increase in FPI inflows. First, only stocks with at least 5% increase in FPI holding compared to the same period last year (y-o-y) and 1% increase compared to the previous quarter (q-o-q) were selected. We only selected stocks recommended by at least five analysts and these stocks also have a potential upside of at least 15% from current market prices. We also eliminated a few companies with extreme valuation ratios.Shriram Transport FinanceWith customers postponing purchase of new commercial vehicles, the demand for used vehicles is rising. This has come as a boon for companies financing used vehicles like Shriram Transport. Its used vehicle disbursements during the second quarter of 2019-20 grew by 7% y-o-y and 9% q-o-q. The share of used commercial vehicles in its loan book went up from 82% to 84% y-o-y. Sales of new vehicles are also expected to pick up during January-March 2020.Hike in FPI holding (%)Y-o-Y: 12.05 Q-o-Q: 4.35CMP (Rs): 1,121.25Target price (Rs): 1,304.63Potential gain: 16.35% 72082657 Analyst ViewsBuy: 34 Hold: 4 Sell: 2Shriram Transport's initiatives like reduction in loan to value ratios, digital collections, regular visits to borrowers, etc are expected to improve asset quality in coming quarters. USFB has reported a net profit of Rs 93 crore, a growth of 111% y-o-y, during the second quarter of 2019-20. Being a new entrant, USFB's gross and net NPAs are at 0.9% and 0.3% respectively. Ujjivan Financial Services will soon launch the IPO of USFB. This IPO is expected to raise Rs 1,200 crore. This listing will make Ujjivan Financial Services a parent of another listed company and such parent companies usually trade at a discount to its listed subsidiaries. Due to these factors, Ujjivan Financial Services is quoting at reasonable valuations and is the reason why FPIs are increasing their stake in this counter. "We arrived at our price target of Rs 360 based on the assumption that the planned capital raising entails 15% dilution and 1 year forward holding company discount of 40%," says a recent Yes Securities report.Bharat ElectronicsBharat Electronics supplies advanced electronic equipment to the Indian armed forces. Being a state-owned aerospace and defence company, military orders are flowing to it on a regular basis. For example, Bharat Electronics has bagged orders worth Rs 7,088 crore in the second quarter of 2019-20 and its total order book on 30 September stands at Rs 56,178 crore. It also has an export order book of $158.5 million as on 30 September. Bharat Electronics is diversifying into non defence segment like homeland security, cyber security and work related to smart cities, etc. Revenue from the new initiatives reached the 20% mark during the second quarter. Bharat Electronics is also the main supplier of EVMs. Reasonably high EBITDA margin is another point worth mentioning. "Traction in execution and a favourable product mix is expected to help Bharat Electronics to maintain its EBITDA margins at around 20% levels in future," says a recent ICICI Direct report.Aster DM HealthcareAster DM is an ideal candidate to benefit from the expected boost in medical tourism. With presence in all healthcare segments—hospitals, pharmacies, etc—Aster DM has a well-diversified business profile. With presence in seven Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and an established brand in south India, Aster DM also has a well-diversified geographical profile. Therefore, transfer of patients from GCC countries to Indian hospitals for complex treatment is easy.Hike in FPI holding (%)Y-o-Y: 6.20Q-o-Q: 1.72CMP (Rs): 145Target price (Rs): 192Potential gain: 32.41% 72082707 Analyst ViewsBuy: 8Hold: 0Sell: 0"Aster DM is an attractive play on the mandatory insurance coverage in GCC and the increasing insurance penetration in India," says a recent JM Financial report. Since Aster DM is reporting high growth rates (grew by a CAGR of 35% in the past 5 years) and is expected to grow faster in coming years, its current low valuation (discount of around 50% compared to peers) is not justifi ed. The risk-reward is favourable at current valuations and a rerating in this counter is expected in the near future.Redington IndiaDespite the ongoing economic slowdown, Redington has surprised the street with revenue growth of 11% y-o-y and 6% q-o-q in the second quarter of 2019-20.More importantly, the domestic growth (15.3% y-o-y) was better than its growth from the overseas business (8.5% y-o-y). Net profit growth would have been higher than 27% y-o-y had the ProConnect business—supply chain solutions—had not dragged it down. The ProConnect woe was more related to some vendor-specific issues and therefore, this issue is expected to get resolved in the next one or two quarters. In other words, this is not going impact the long-term business prospects of Redington.Hike in FPI holding (%)Y-o-Y: 5.57Q-o-Q: 4.77CMP (Rs): 115.85Target price (Rs): 135.86Potential gain: 17.27% 72082725 Analyst ViewsBuy: 10Hold: 0Sell: 0"We remain confident of strong revenue growth and improved profitability driving return on capital employed (RoCE) expansion for Redington to 16–18% by 2020-21," says a recent Edelweiss report. In addition to the improvement in its business, the current low valuation is another major attraction in this counter. For example, it is now quoting at a PE of just 8.10 times. All index values normalised to a base of 100.

How to Get Over Writer's Block

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 04:00 PM PST

Suddenly your thought processes cease. You seem to have lost your concentration. You have no idea what to write. It is scary, especially when you are in the middle of writing a long novel and feel like you've hit a brick wall. Don't worry -- you're not alone. Almost every serious writer has dealt with this problem and has come out stronger on the other side. The following are simple, but not foolproof, ways to overcome writer's block.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Writing Whatever Comes to Mind

  1. Accept that you have writer's block. When you have writer's block, no ideas spring to mind when you are writing and you are stuck for what to write. Understand that writer's block is easy to overcome, and there are many ways to get over it. Do not stop to the idea that you will never write again.
Start a Love Story Step 16.jpg
  2. Write about anything. Anything in the world - even write about pineapples. It gets your brain to think more and be creative. This works best for many people. Once you've thought of a paragraph or a few sentences about your topic go back to your story.
Write a Personal Essay Step 14.jpg
  3. Get some ideas on paper without worrying about how they sound. The writing does not have to be polished; writers often have writer's block because they worry about the quality of their writing. Remember that nobody has to see a word you've written except you. You can show it to the world when you're ready.
Write Information in a Cornell Outline Format Step 5 Version 2.jpg
  4. Try a change of pace. For example, if you have a long, action-packed sequence, try going over to a reasoned conversation. Be sure that the changeover makes sense. You don't have to write in one speed or one tone all the time. Something completely different can really end up inspiring you to reach new depths. If you tend to write dramatic scenes, switch to something a bit more lighthearted, or vice versa.
Write About a Fictional City Step 15.jpg
  5. Decide when to give up on an idea. Look over what you have written and ask yourself, "Does this seem to be leading up to anything?" If you feel like it's going absolutely nowhere, then it may be time to move on from it.
Write an Opening Statement Step 6 Version 2.jpg
  6. Decide whether the situation truly feels real. You may have writer's block because the situation doesn't seem realistic to you. Don't be afraid to rewrite parts of the story to make it more natural.
Write About a Fictional City Step 5 Version 2.jpg
  7. Try starting from another part of your story. If you are having trouble with the beginning, write the middle or end. After you have written another part of the story, things may start to fall into place where you were before.
Write a Consolation Letter Step 13.jpg
    • Writing out of order may require more familiarity with the plot so that everything makes sense from start to finish. At the same time, it may help you think out the details when you cannot decide what to do with your story. Writing a good ending while you think of about the rest of your story will help structure it.
  8. Write something totally different. It may surprise you how much you like it! A monologue, song, poem, or even taking a short amount of time to write a scene from a completely different story will get your writer's blood flowing again.
    Write Sad Stories Step 13.jpg
  9. Use prompts. Out of all writers block stoppers, using prompts is one of the most effective ones. Use any random word or sentence to help you come up with a plot and start writing your story. For example, if you asked a friend to give you a prompt and they said the words "Forever" and "Passion" you would most likely think of a romance. And if they were to give you the phrase "Bite me" then you would most likely think of a vampire or werewolf. (Twilight anybody?)
    Write User Manuals Step 20.jpg
  10. Use the world around you. Use the people around you and their personalities. Use the nature, atmosphere, and scenes that surround you to build up your story/plot. The best possible way to do this is to use a diary. Jot down your daily life, random thoughts and feelings.
Write Best Selling Children's Books Step 6 Version 2.jpg
  11. If you can't possibly think of something to write about, just name a bunch of objects or ideas. Even if you think one won't work. It's a simple way to cure writer's block. To make it easier, say everything you're thinking about out loud. You'll bump into something. Good luck!
Write Information in a Cornell Outline Format Step 6 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Starting with a Character

  1. Get a paper and a pen or a pencil. Or use your computer, if that works better. This is the first thing you need to channel a character -- a blank canvas.
Write a Letter to Your Teacher Step 1 Version 3.jpg
  2. Write down a name, the first name that comes to mind, at the top of the page. It can be the name of a person you know, a person you read about, or just something that randomly pops into your head.
Write a Letter of Intent Step 4 Version 4.jpg
  3. Ask questions about the person. Under the name, start making a list, ask yourself questions like: Who is this person? How does he/she look like? Does this person have any siblings, if yes then who?
Start a Love Story Step 5.jpg
  4. Let the character develop. Allow the character to form in your mind, see the character in your head, become the character.
Write a Character Sketch Step 1 Version 2.jpg
  5. Try to visualize the life of the character. What is it like when the character wakes up in the morning? Does he/she go to work or school? How does he/she feel about his family? What does he/she like to have for lunch? All of these details add up to a life.
Write a Character Sketch Step 5.jpg
  6. Look over what you've written. When you are done with the list, read through it and hopefully, you will be able to place this character in a scenario, that might spark the idea for a story… maybe just one detail you came up with can spark your interest in an entire story.
    Write User Manuals Step 24.jpg
  7. Play the "and then" game. Surprisingly, this game is a great way to cut yourself out of writer's block. Start with any random sentence, for example, "One day there was a girl named Destiny" then you continue the story with "and then" after every sentence. "And then she met a guy named Daniel. And then she found out he was a vampire" etc. That might not be how you write a story, but, the deeper you get, you end up finding a plot.
Help Your Child With Homework Step 16.jpg
  8. Write a backstory about your main character. Create tons of info about your main character -- why is her hair so short when all of the other girls have long plaits? Her hair was like that too, but an evil man tried to cut her neck in a chase and she ducked, her hair flying up, causing him to slice it, instead.
Start a Love Story Step 3 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Getting Inspired Through Reading

  1. Reading a novel. It could help with inspiration. Reread a book that you enjoy if you want to. You can even plot the book, or write down what it is about the characters or scenes that really inspires you. Try picking something in the genre you're writing in, whether it's Sci-Fi, Romance, or a Thriller, to get ideas about your subject matter.
Establish a Research Topic Step 2 Version 2.jpg
  2. Read your previous work. If you reread your story or other previous stories, it might spark something in your brain. Inspiration is a mysterious thing; it can come back at any time.
Arrange Your Teenage Daughter's Bedroom Step 10.jpg
  3. Read about a person you admire. Read a story about someone who you like or admire and make a character based on that person, include their personality traits and hobbies so if you do write a story on them it makes it easier when you're knowing almost everything about them.
Develop Good Communication Skills Step 12.jpg
  4. Read poetry. Poetry can also inspire you to write fiction -- or to write some poetry of your own! You may be surprised, but an image in a poem, whether it's the "Silken, sad, uncertain, rustling of each purple curtain" in Poe's "The Raven," or the line, "You, my father, there on the sad height," from Dylan Thomas' poem, "Rage, Rage Against the Dying of the Light," that brings an image or an idea to mind, soon enough, you'll be inspired by a completely new idea!
Write Best Selling Children's Books Step 4 Version 2.jpg
  5. Read non-fiction. Hey, picking up a book about a historical event, such at the Montgomery Bus Boycotts or the Siege of Leningrad, can also help you come up with a new vision or idea that took place during that time. Soon, you'll have new characters, plots, or lines of dialogue floating through your head.
    Write a Paragraph Step 2 Version 2.jpg
  6. Rewrite an existing article. Find a newspaper and rewrite the article -- that murder last week was a ghost getting revenge on her evil grandson, and... (this can help get ideas flowing).
    Write a Paragraph Step 8 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Avoiding Perfection

  1. Take a break. Sometimes a nap helps (you never know what you'll dream about, plus sometimes, while you're lying in bed, you'll have a sudden flash of inspiration. You should write it down instantly, even if it's in the middle of the night.) or you can watch a movie or go for a walk. Seeing new things can help stimulate your brain and thus giving your imagination a boost. Cook a meal, clean the house or play with your pets. Completely forget about your story for a while.
Deal With Your Roommate's Mood Swings Step 2 Version 2.jpg
  2. Don't be hard on yourself if you can't think of anything. If you really can't write a word and would rather lie down and relax or do something else, don't punish yourself. Even the world's best writers can sometimes only write for an hour or a few hours a day. Gustave Flaubert, the author of the classic, Madame Bovary, was said to only write a single sentence per day!
Write Good Captions in Photojournalism Step 19.jpg
  3. Don't edit while you write. You can obsess over every sentence or every line later. If you are telling yourself that each paragraph absolutely must be absolutely perfect then you'll never get to the next paragraph!
Write a Brief Description of Yourself Step 9 Version 2.jpg
  4. Don't panic. Everyone gets writer's block at least once in their lives as it's perfectly normal. You can even say that going through writer's block and breaking through it, will help you be an even more imaginative and creative writer.
Be Quiet During Class Step 7.jpg
  5. Don't compare yourself to your favorite writers. Okay, so maybe you don't feel up to speed with Stephen King, Louis Sachar, Emily Bronte, or Dostoevsky. That doesn't mean you should feel inadequate or like you're the worst writer on the planet. Use these writers for inspiration, as a standard you'd like to achieve, one day, not as benchmarks for your own failure or success. Once you take the pressure off, you'll be able to write much more freely.
    Write a Will Step 5 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Playing the "Crazy Game"

  1. Get a blank piece of paper. This works best if you're in a quiet place where you feel no judgment.
Write a Grievance Letter for Wrongful Termination Step 12 Version 2.jpg
  2. For about five minutes, try to think of the craziest sentence possible. For example, "The flying turtle ate the talking pineapple, even though he knew it was the unicorn's best friend." You can generate several crazy sentences and pick the best one if you're really in the groove. Don't judge yourself or hold back. Just write whatever comes to mind.
Write a Character Sketch Step 8.jpg
  3. Take your crazy sentence and write it down. Repeat this until you have a list of three or more ideas.
Write an Effective Poem Step 11.jpg
  4. Repeat the process until you have a paragraph full of crazy sentences. Make it as crazy as possible. If you are typically a sensible and serious person, you should take a break and attempt to write the most boring story ever. Once you've found at least 5-6 "good" crazy sentences, you should have something to work with. Read them over. They'll make you laugh, feel looser, and feel less restrained about always writing the most perfect sentence in the world.
Write Information in a Cornell Outline Format Step 5 Version 2.jpg
  5. Pick one sentence that stands out and get inspired by it. Use that one sentence as the opening of a short story, or even a short short-story. Don't let it hold you back. Maybe even just pick one or two phrases or words from that sentence, and use them for inspiration. Keep writing until you feel relaxed and like you have something to work with!
Write Information in a Cornell Outline Format Step 9 Version 2.jpg
  6. If none of the sentences inspire you to write a story, use the craziness itself as inspiration. Okay, so maybe all of your sentences were too crazy or ridiculous to work with. That's okay. Let the process itself inspire you and make see that it's easy to let loose and generate crazy sentences once in a while -- it's not about achieving perfection! After this exercise, you can just start trying to get back into the same writing you were doing before while feeling more confident about your ability to be creative!
Write a Seminar Paper Step 9 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Playing the "Wikipedia Prompt Game"

  1. Get your preferred writing medium, pen, and paper, Microsoft Word, etc.
Write a Self Evaluation Step 13 Version 2.jpg
  2. Then go to Wikipedia.org and click on the link "Random Article" and based on that article write something, anything even if it is only a short six-word story.
Write a Request Letter Step 1.jpg
  3. Repeat as often as you like, maybe try to do it once a day so you get into writing more often.
Choose a Charity to Support Step 2 Version 3.jpg

[Edit]Writer's Block Help

[Edit]Tips

  • Play some music appropriate to the scene in your story. You could even make up an entire playlist for your story. Music is a great way to break down that writer's block; listen to what you enjoy, but don't let the music become a serious distraction. You need to spend most of your time writing, not singing along or dancing.
  • If you can't do any of those things, just read: reading can give you many ideas about how to write and what to write. Take a break; you may need it. Try to write every day, but do not force yourself too much. Your writing will not benefit from it.
  • Don't be afraid to stress your character's personality a bit -- but not too much or they'll become very disliked (unless they're the antagonist or are supposed to be disliked).
  • Get it written, it doesn't need to be "right". Your first draft isn't your final draft, after all. Don't be such a perfectionist.
  • If you enjoy art, try drawing one of the characters, scenes, places, objects, or anything else from your story; it will really help with your writer's block. Designing your envisioned book cover may help you get excited about your story and revitalize your inspiration for it.
  • Next time, get to the point in your writing where you are excited to pick up where you left off. Even if that means having to pull yourself out of the writing.
  • Write a paragraph that sounds good - exciting, touching, or any other type of good - then see if you can't come up with a story to fit it.
  • Listen to inspiring music. Preferably something that fits the theme of your story, or a certain point you've gotten to. If it's a romance novel and you're stuck on a scene that you want to put together perfectly for the two lovers, listen to something that mirrors it musically.
  • You can use these steps to visualize a storyline, it works just as well.
  • Do a mock interview with your characters to practice characterization, or design some character sheets for them. Understanding your character is a key part of writing!
  • Leave it alone for a while. If you're ever just thinking one day while on writer's block, you may wind up finding a new idea stored somewhere in your brain! Just leave it be, and if you don't stress about it, you'll be fine.
  • When stuck on a character, imagine what they look like, what they're wearing, or how they act.
  • Have fun while writing.
  • Don't give up! Almost everyone goes through writer's block. It doesn't mean you have to stop writing.
  • Have a character do something they totally wouldn't, like dye their hair purple.
  • Asking for help with the steps can reward an even better result.
  • Just wait, inspiration will strike eventually. If you have no ideas maybe you should leave the manuscript around for a few weeks and then come back to it.
  • You don't have to use a manuscript book, use what you feel comfortable with. For example: a notebook, a writing pad, a computer, or even a drawing book.
  • Allow yourself to write crud. It can lead to new plot twists.
  • Your friends can help you come up with new ideas when you don't have any. Try chatting with them about some of the scenes you're having trouble with.
  • Pretend you are the character in the scene trying to solve the problem.
  • Travel, look around, take in your surroundings and use what you see. Are people mean or nice at the club, at the cafe, at the park?
    • Go to a quiet place with a pen you especially like, a pad or notebook that is comfortable and familiar and just start writing. Write out what you need to do today. Write out a quarrel you had with your husband, wife, child, or neighbor. Write out the ideal scenario for a meal on the patio with a few friends. Write anything except about the thing you are "blocked" about. Just write, fast and furiously, and from that writing, you will find the thread, or the fuel to continue with your project unimpeded.
  • Try meditating. It may help your mind to work again and recover from writer's block.
  • Don't be afraid to act out a few scenes to decide what happens next.
  • You can make the character like you. Are you dramatic, romantic, brave, or adventurous? Write about that and you can get a plot.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Remember that it becomes more and more difficult to overcome writer's block as you wait longer and longer to start writing.
  • Don't get stressed about writer's block, or it'll seem much worse and may become incurable.
  • Don't work with prompts that aren't in your comfort zone.
  • Don't ever stress over how difficult your writer's block may be to overcome. If you keep thinking about it, it will stick around longer.
  • Don't write just to write, it'll make you go back and change it later.

How to Make Baklava

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 08:00 AM PST

If you're tired of buying tiny pieces of expensive baklava, make a pan of it at home. Create a flavorful syrup with your favorite spices and use your choice of nuts to make a rich filling. Then layer sheets of buttered phyllo dough and scatter the filling in the middle. Bake your baklava until it's golden brown and pour the syrup over the hot pastry. Enjoy bites of the baklava whenever you like!

[Edit]Ingredients

[Edit]Syrup

  • 2 cups (400 g) of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (340 g) of honey
  • of water
  • of lemon juice
  • of light corn syrup (optional)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (optional)
  • 4 to 6 whole cloves or 1/2 teaspoon (1 g) of ground cardamom (optional)

[Edit]Filling

  • of blanched almonds, pistachios, walnuts, or any combination
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) of granulated sugar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons (2 to 4 g) of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon (0.5 g) of ground cloves or cardamom (optional)
  • of phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup (226 g) of butter or vegetable oil

Makes 3 dozen small pieces

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Making the Syrup and Filling

  1. Put the sugar, honey, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Pour 2 cups (400 g) of granulated sugar, 1 cup (340 g) of honey, of water, and of lemon juice into a medium saucepan on the stove.[1]

    • If you don't want to use honey, substitute the same amount of granulated sugar.
  2. Add corn syrup and spices if desired. To prevent the syrup from crystallizing, you can add of light corn syrup. If you'd like the syrup to have a slightly spiced flavor, add 2 sticks of cinnamon that are about in length. You can also add 4 to 6 whole cloves or 1/2 teaspoon (1 g) of ground cardamom.[2]

    • For a citrus syrup, add the zest of a lemon along with of vanilla.
  3. Heat the mixture over low for 5 minutes. Stir the mixture as it cooks so the sugar dissolves. Keep stirring the syrup as it heats so it cooks evenly and becomes a light syrup.[3]

    • Use a wooden spoon to stir the syrup since the heat of the pot would transfer to a metal spoon.
  4. Simmer the syrup for 5 minutes and remove the whole spices, if using. Once the sugar has dissolved, turn the burner to medium. Stop stirring and let the syrup cook until it thickens a little. Turn off the burner and carefully remove the cinnamon sticks and whole cloves if you used them.[4] once it's cooked enough.}}

    • Let the syrup cool while you prepare the filling.
  5. Chop or pulse the nuts in a food processor. Get out of the nuts you want to use in the baklava. If you'd like chunkier baklava, use a chef's knife to finely chop the nuts. If you want delicately textured baklava, put the nuts in a food processor and pulse them until they're coarsely ground.[5]

  6. Combine the nuts with the sugar, cinnamon, and spice, if using. Put the chopped or ground nuts into a bowl and add 1/4 cup (50 g) of granulated sugar and 1 to 2 teaspoons (2 to 4 g) of ground cinnamon. If you'd like spicier baklava, add 1/4 teaspoon (0.5 g) of ground cloves or cardamom. Stir until the nuts are combined with the sugar and spice.[6]

    • For an unusual flavor combination stir in 1 teaspoon (3 g) of coffee powder.
    • To give the baklava filling a bold flavor, add 1 teaspoon (2 g) of ground ginger.

[Edit]Assembling the Baklava

  1. Preheat the oven to and grease a baking pan. If you'd like thicker baklava, butter the inside of a or pan. If you want to make thin baklava, grease a jelly roll pan.[7]
Make Baklava Step 7 Version 4.jpg
  2. Melt 1 cup (226 g) of butter. Put the butter in a microwave-safe dish and microwave it for 20-second intervals until it melts. If you'd rather melt it on the stove, put the butter in a small saucepan and turn the burner to low.[8]

    • If you want lower-calorie baklava, replace half of the butter with vegetable oil.
  3. Brush 7 sheets of phyllo with butter and stack them in the greased pan. Open the thawed package of phyllo dough and unwrap a sheet. Spread the sheet out and lay it in the pan. Then dip a pastry brush in the melted butter and brush the phyllo sheet lightly. Lay another sheet of phyllo in the pan and brush it. Keep doing this until you've stacked 7 layers of phyllo.[9]

    • If you're using a jelly roll pan, you may need to cut a few sheets of phyllo dough to size so they cover the bottom of the pan.
  4. Spread 1/2 of the spiced nut filling over the phyllo. Get out the ground or chopped nut mixture with the spices and scatter 1/2 of it over the phyllo sheets in the pan. Spread them evenly so the baklava has level layers.[10]

  5. Brush 8 sheets of phyllo with butter and lay them in the pan. Since this is the middle layer of baklava, it's fine to use up any torn or ripped sheets of phyllo. Try to brush butter between each of the 8 sheets as you stack them.[11]

  6. Spread the remaining filling and 8 more sheets of phyllo in the pan. Scatter the other 1/2 of the spiced nut mixture evenly across the middle layer of phyllo. Then butter and layer 8 more sheets of phyllo to make the top of the baklava.[12]

  7. Trim the edges and cut the baklava into small diamonds. Take a sharp knife and cut off any phyllo that's hanging over the side of the pan. Then cut 6 long strips that are wide through just the top layer of phyllo. Turn the pan so you can cut long diagonal slices across the top layer of pastry. This will create small diamonds that are about wide.[13]

    • If you prefer, cut the baklava into small squares instead.
    • If you're having trouble cutting cleanly through the phyllo, try using a serrated knife.

[Edit]Baking the Baklava

  1. Sprinkle the top of the baklava with water and bake it for 20 minutes. Dip your clean fingers in a bowl of ice water and sprinkle a little over over the top of the baklava. Then put the pan in the oven and bake the baklava for 20 minutes.[14]

    • The ice water will prevent the top layer of phyllo from curling as it bakes.
  2. Turn the oven to and bake the baklava for 15 minutes. Keep the baklava in the oven and turn the temperature down. Then bake the baklava until it becomes golden brown on the top.[15]
Make Baklava Step 15 Version 2.jpg
  3. Remove the baklava and cut through the lines. Turn off the oven and carefully take the baklava out of the oven. Immediately use a sharp knife to cut through the lines you cut earlier. Cut down to the bottom of the pan.[16]

  4. Pour the syrup over the hot baklava. Slowly pour the syrup or use a ladle to spoon the syrup evenly over the baklava. The phyllo will soak up the syrup as it runs down through the pieces you cut.[17]

  5. Cool the baklava for at least 4 hours before serving. Leave the baklava to sit at room temperature while it cools and absorbs the syrup. Then you can serve it or cover and store it for up to 1 week.[18]
Make Baklava Step 18 Version 2.jpg
    • If the baklava looks dry, drizzle a little more syrup over it before serving.
    • The flavor and texture of baklava will actually be at its best 1 day after you pour the syrup over it.

[Edit]Tips

  • To thaw frozen phyllo dough, leave it in the package on the counter for 5 hours or put the package in the refrigerator the night before you want to use it.[19]
  • To prevent the unused phyllo from drying out while you assemble the baklava, cover it with a damp dishcloth.

[Edit]Things You'll Need

  • Medium saucepan
  • Spoons
  • Microwave-safe bowl or small saucepan
  • Pastry brush
  • Knife

How to Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal

Posted: 17 Nov 2019 12:00 AM PST

Garbage disposals are usually an easy fix, but always remember to unplug the unit before attempting to clear a jam. Pressing the overload button underneath the disposal may fix the issue right away. If the blades are still stuck, rotate them with an Allen wrench or a specialty garbage disposal wrench. If the garbage disposal still doesn't work, it's time to call a plumber or replace the unit.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Pressing the Reset Button

  1. Unplug the garbage disposal unit. Pull the plug out of the outlet to ensure that the disposal unit can't activate while you work on it. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 1.jpg
  2. Press the reset button on the disposal's underside. The reset button or thermal overload button is on the bottom of the garbage disposal. Crawl under it and look for a red button. If it looks like it's sticking out, push it back into the unit. This may fix the jam right away.[1]
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 2.jpg
    • If the reset button isn't sticking out, move on to other methods that involve manually rotating the grinders to clear the blockage. Keep the unit unplugged.
  3. Wait 15 minutes if the button pops out again. The red button pops out when the garbage disposal overheats. Give it time to cool down, then press the button again. Repeat this until the button stays in place.[2]
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 3.jpg
    • If the button still doesn't stay in place, switch to a different method.
  4. Run cold water in the sink. Turn on the faucet. Check to make sure the water is cold, then let it run into the drain and through the disposal for a minute or 2.[3]
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 4.jpg
  5. Test the garbage disposal. Plug the unit back in and make sure that it's turned on. The reset button should stay in place as the disposal blades begin spinning again. If they're still stuck, listen for the motor humming to indicate that the device is functional other than the jammed grinders.
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 5.jpg
    • If the unit isn't humming and you know the power is on in your house, it is probably broken and needed to be replaced.

[Edit]Rotating the Disposal Blades

  1. Insert an Allen wrench into the hole underneath the disposal. Unplug the unit, then climb underneath the sink and find the hole on the disposal's underside. It will be hexagonal-shaped and in the center. Get the Allen wrench that came with the disposal unit and place its head in the hole.[4]
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 6.jpg
    • If you don't have the wrench that came with the unit, purchase a hex-head Allen wrench from a hardware store.
  2. Crank the wrench to turn the disposal's motor shaft. First, turn the wrench counterclockwise as far as you can. Then turn it clockwise until it won't go any further. Continue cranking the wrench back and forth until you are able to rotate it completely in a circle.[5]
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 7.jpg
    • It's okay to apply force while doing this. The wrench is designed to bend a little and won't damage the disposal unit.
  3. Run cold water into the sink and test the disposal unit. Remove the wrench, then turn on the water faucet. The water helps rinse away any debris still stuck on the blades. Plug in the unit and turn on the disposal. If you were able to rotate the wrench, the unit should work normally again.
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 8.jpg
    • If the unit doesn't work or you were unable to rotate it, unplug the unit, drain the water, and try a different treatment.

[Edit]Manually Removing Blockages

  1. Turn off the room's electrical supply. To turn off the electricity, go to the fuse box in your home. It is usually on the bottom floor or in the basement. Find the switch that corresponds to the room with the disposal unit and flip the switch to off.[6]
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 9.jpg
    • The switches should be labeled, but you can test the room for an electrical current by plugging something into a wall outlet and attempting to turn it on.
    • Another way to do this is to flip the light switch near the disposal unit. This only works if the switch controls the electrical outlet the unit is plugged into. Check by listening to the unit for humming.
  2. Look down through the sink drain for any blockages. Get a flashlight and shine it into the sink drain and garbage disposal. Shine the light over the unit's outer edge, since this is where blockages typically happen. Find the small teeth of the disposal's blades on the outer edge and look for anything obstructing them.[7]
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 10.jpg
  3. Remove blockages with tongs or pliers. For safety, avoid sticking your hand into the disposal unit. Instead, get a pair of kitchen tongs or pliers from your toolbox. Stick them down through the sink and into the disposal unit. Use them to break away any blockages you notice.
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 11.jpg
  4. Spin the blades with a special garbage disposal wrench if they are still stuck. Instead of using the Allen wrench, get a garbage disposal wrench. It looks like a claw with 2 prongs on 1 end. Stick the prongs down the drain until they're around the unit's blades. Spin the blades counterclockwise, then clockwise, until they rotate freely.[8]
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 12.jpg
    • Spinning the blades this way requires a lot of force. Keep turning the wrench back and forth until the blades loosen.
  5. Remove the wrench and turn on the disposal. Pull the wrench out of the drain. Plug the unit into the outlet, then restore the electrical current to the room. Turn on the disposal to give it a test run.
Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal Step 13.jpg
    • If the garbage disposal still doesn't work after all these treatments, it most likely needs to be replaced.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Sticking your hand into a garbage disposal is dangerous. Always use pliers or another tool.

How to Open a Small Business

Posted: 16 Nov 2019 04:00 PM PST

Once you've decided you want to start a small business, formulated your business plan, lined up financing, and secured a site, the time will finally come to actually open up shop. While planning a business may present challenges, the actual act of opening a business and bringing the business concept to fruition has its own set of difficulties. To have a better chance of long-term success, you need to get your business off to a good start. Here are a few tips on how to legally establish your business, hire your first employees, spreading the word, and organizing a grand opening.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Legally Establishing Your Business

  1. Ensure you have a business plan. A business plan is critical to the success of a business and can be seen as a plan that describes your business, products/services, market, and describes how your business will go about expanding for the next three to five years. It is essentially a "road map" for your business to follow going forward.
Open a Small Business Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • How to Write a Business Plan offers much useful information on the process, such as: determining your potential market and its viability; identifying your business' initial needs and start-up costs; identifying potential investors; establishing your business strategy and marketing plan; and creating a clear, concise document that ends with your "executive summary," in which you essentially "sell" your business to investors and interested parties.
    • See the following wikiHow articles for more information on How to Start a Small Business; starting up a small retail business such as a bakery; and the specifics of starting a business in California, for example, among others.
    • To make sure you're ready to open up, consult the U.S. Small Business Administration's (SBA) 10-part checklist for starting a business.[1] Each part of the checklist is summarized in the following three steps below.
  2. Determine the legal structure of your business. Before starting your business and filing the necessary papers, it is important to decide on how your business will be legally structured. Generally speaking, you will be establishing either a sole proprietorship; partnership; corporation; or limited liability company (LLC). There are important legal and tax implications for each.[2]
Open a Small Business Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • A sole proprietorship is owned and run by one person, and there is no distinction between the owner and the business. This means that all the business' profits, losses, debts, and liabilities are your responsibility. Choose this if you are the sole owner and want full responsibility for the business.
    • Partnership. A partnership occurs when two or more people share ownership. In a partnership, each partner has equal share (unless specified) in the profits, liabilities, and management of the business. This can be useful in terms of pooling capital and expertise to start the business.
    • Corporation: A corporation is an independent legal entity owned by shareholders. Generally, this structure is not appropriate for small businesses.
    • Limited Liability Company (LLC): An LLC is similar to a partnership, except members are protected from personal liability for actions of the LLC. For example, if the LLC is sued, the personal assets of the partners are typically exempt. If you are worried about personal exposure to lawsuits or debts arising from your business, this may be a good option.
  3. Form the necessary legal structure. A different procedure exists for forming each one of these structures, and some require more work while others are extremely simple. Details surrounding how to form each type can be located on the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) website.[3]
Open a Small Business Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Forming a sole proprietorship is most simple, as it involves no formal action. Simply obtain your EIN (described below), establish a business name (described below), and your can include your business income on your personal tax return.
    • LLC's, Partnerships, and Corporations are slightly more involved to form, requiring specific paperwork. To learn the details on each, check the SBA website, or contact the SBA.
  4. Obtain a tax identification number. Also known as an Employee Identification Number (EIN), the EIN is used to identify your business for tax purposes. Applying for an EIN is simple, and can be done within minutes on the IRS website. [4]
Open a Small Business Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Note that if you are starting a partnership or a sole proprietorship, it is not necessary to obtain an EIN. However, it can be wise to do so anyway. Without an EIN, your business will be identified by your Social Security Number (SSN) for tax purposes. Keeping your SSN private reduces the odds of identity theft.[5].
  5. Register your business name. Unless you are running the business under your own name, such as "John Smith Painting," most states require you to register a "Doing Business As" (DBA) name for tax and legal purposes. Registering a DBA is done with your state government or county clerk's office. Search the specific requirements of your state online.[6]
Open a Small Business Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Establishing a DBA name usually just takes minutes to complete, and is especially useful if you have a sole proprietorship. This allows you to have a business name separate from your personal name. When you form a sole proprietorship, the business name will automatically default to your personal name unless you file a DBA.
  6. Obtain a business license. The city or county which you operate within will require a business license. Typically, these forms can be found on the website for your city.
Open a Small Business Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • These forms will require your business type, address, # of employees, EIN, and possibly information regarding revenue (estimations will work fine here).
    • Keep in mind that licensing requirements often apply to online and home-based businesses as well as typical brick-and-mortar businesses. Requirements do vary according to location, so be certain to contact your local and state government to determine specific requirements.
  7. Inquire as to other necessary permits. Unfortunately, each city or county has different permit requirements for businesses. These can include things like "Home Occupation Permits" for home based businesses, "Alarm Permits" if your business requires a commercial alarm, or various alcohol and firearm permits.
Open a Small Business Step 7.jpg
    • Contact your local government's permitting bureau or similar authority, or seek out the local chamber of commerce or business association for advice.
  8. Establish a bank account for your business. It is very important not to mix business and personal finances, as this can lead to issues with the IRS. Having separate bank accounts for business and personal transaction simplifies accounting and makes tax requirements easier to understand.
Open a Small Business Step 8.jpg
    • To open a business account, simply contact your local bank or credit union.
  9. Contact a small business lawyer or accountant for further guidance. While forming a sole proprietorship is relatively simple, if you are forming an LLC, Corporation, or Partnership, it is essential to involve a professional.
Open a Small Business Step 9.jpg
    • A professional can guide you through which forms to fill out, and can also help you draft important partnership documents. For example, forming an LLC or Partnership involves documents specifying what ownership is attributed to each partner. This must be specified in a legally valid form.

[Edit]Preparing To Open Your Business

  1. Determine employer responsibilities. Before you begin hiring, make sure you have taken the necessary steps to be able to collect federal and state wage taxes, provide employee eligibility verification, and obtain worker's compensation insurance, among others.
Open a Small Business Step 10.jpg
    • One of your central obligations to ensure that employees are eligible to work in the United States. To do this, you must complete "Form I-9" within three days of hiring a new employee. Completing this form will require you to submit documents to verify your employees citizenship and confirm their eligibility to work in the United States. The form can be downloaded on the U.S. Immigration and Customs website. Note that you do not need to submit this form with the Federal Government, but you do need to keep it on file for three years after the date of hire or one year after the date of termination, whichever is later.
    • Make sure to register for Workers Compensation Insurance with your state's Workers Compensation Insurance Program.
    • When hiring an employee, they must provide you with a signed Form-W4 before they begin employment, which you must send to the IRS. This allows you to withhold federal income tax.
    • Further information regarding hiring and employer responsibility are available on the SBA website (https://www.sba.gov/category/navigation-structure/starting-managing-business/starting-business/establishing-business/hiring).
  2. Hire the right people. The first impression is critical for a new small business, and unless you'll be doing all the work yourself, that impression will be made at least in part by the people you hire.
Open a Small Business Step 11.jpg
    • Ideally you can find someone who is familiar with the business — someone who has twirled dough if you're opening a pizza shop, for instance — but even more important is finding a person who is willing and eager to learn. You need employees who want to learn to do things (and represent your business) your way.
    • You do have to be willing to let go a little, however. This business has been your baby for a long time, but as you let it out into the world, you'll need help taking care of it. Look for employees who are eager to contribute ideas and adapt as the business goes through its early growing pains.
    • Do your homework. Look over resumes. Call references. Don't just hire your nephew to make your brother happy. (Wait until your business gets on its feet.)
    • Key questions like "Can you provide an example of a problem that you successfully solved?" may offer insights into a potential employee's ambition, ingenuity, and work ethic.[7]. Keep in mind that such questions are common, however, and the interviewee may have prepared stock answers already. (An inability to answer effectively is thus a bad sign.) In addition, try to think up a few problem-solving hypotheticals, for instance, that are specific to your small business.
  3. Prepare your site. Whether you have a physical or virtual business site, the impression it makes on your initial customers will go a long way toward determining your chances of success.
Open a Small Business Step 12.jpg
    • If your business involves a storefront — a candy shop or used-book store, for instance — set up your space to represent your vision for the business. Coordinate color patterns and décor with your logo, for example, or consider personalizing it with family photos to establish your essential connection to this business. Consider hiring a professional interior designer and/or decorator.
    • A web presence is becoming (if not already) essential for any new small business, so don't take this aspect for granted. Especially if your business has a substantial web-based component, make your site intuitive, manageable, and suited to the brand identity you want to build. Hiring a professional web designer may be a good idea.
    • If your budget is tight, and/or your business does not require a traditional storefront, don't overspend on a fancy space. A local coffee shop can make a good place to meet clients, or you can rent a space as needed for such gatherings. Wait until your business has a solid foundation before expanding into a nicer space.
  4. Consider a "soft" opening. There is no rule that says your first day of business has to also be your Grand Opening. Give your business a chance to work out the kinks before announcing itself to the world.[8]
Open a Small Business Step 13.jpg
    • Restaurants are probably the best-known example of businesses that often have soft openings — dry runs of dinner service with invited guests, maybe even just friends and family. But the concept can work with just about any small business. Send your new landscaping company's crews out to work on your local relatives' houses, lure your friends in with free pedicures, or convince your book club to come in and discuss their life insurance needs.
    • Open officially for business without great fanfare, maybe for a week or two before your (well-advertised) Grand Opening. Customers will probably just trickle in, but that will make it easier to practice getting things right before the hopeful rush of customers to come.

[Edit]Spreading the Word

  1. Start early. Don't wait until opening day, or even until you know when opening day will be. Be proactive in establishing brand awareness and generating anticipation. A "coming soon" sign on your in-preparation storefront is a good start, but not enough on its own.
Open a Small Business Step 14.jpg
    • Preserve the bulk of your initial marketing budget for the Grand Opening, but before that time utilize budget-friendly options like flyers, targeted direct mail, and a social media presence.
    • Try to build your brand even before your location is ready. If you're going to be selling handcrafted necklaces or handmade pierogies, seek out a local craft or food festival where you can set up a table and sell your wares. (Be sure to advertise your forthcoming retail presence.) If you're an accountant, maybe you can volunteer to offer tax advice at the local community center or library (and hand out business cards).
  2. Establish a marketing budget. The run-up to opening and first few months of operation may very well make or break your new small business, so make sure you give your initial marketing push a strong effort.
Open a Small Business Step 15.jpg
    • One suggestion is to dedicate 20% of your first year's marketing budget to your Grand Opening. This amount should be significant enough to spread your message widely at a time when your ads are likely to be their most effective, but at the same time isn't an "all your eggs in one basket" situation that leaves you with limited ability for subsequent advertising.[9]
    • Spend, for example, $4,500 advertising your Grand Opening, because that amount should be sufficient for two media buys. If that amount is beyond your reach, you may be able to utilize a mix of flyers, direct mailings, promotional items (balloons, banners, etc.), and a "sign spinner" at a busy intersection for around $1,500.[10]
    • This, of course, assumes you have a fairly large marketing budget of $22,500 ($4,500 is 20% of $22,500). Since many businesses have much smaller marketing budgets (maybe only a few thousand dollars), always work within whatever 20% of your marketing budget is.
  3. Use traditional media. If your marketing budget allows, consider using traditional media like radio or newspaper. If you can manage television advertising as well, it is always a good idea to diversify your ad presence.
Open a Small Business Step 16.jpg
    • Before tossing radio aside as an outdated media format, note that some three-quarters of U.S. adults listen to radio at least occasionally, and often do so when driving somewhere. Thus, radio can be a particularly good advertising method for retail stores and restaurants. Target your advertising by format (Top 40, Country, Talk, etc.) and time of day to maximize impact.[11]
    • Newspapers are popular among over-35 adults, but even a decent percentage of younger adults read a paper occasionally. Newspapers are still a cost-effective way to reach thousands of potential customers.
    • Consider including coupons as well; they provide not only motivation to visit but a tangible connection between a potential customer and your business. It is also easy to track their effectiveness, as more coupons coming in mean they are doing their job.[12]
    • You may assume that TV advertising is beyond your small business budget, but there are options for producing and placing lower-cost ads, sometimes with the assistance of the local broadcast network. Consider bunching your ads during programs relevant to your targeted customer base — TV judge shows for a legal practice or the nightly news sports report for a golf training academy, for instance — so that you seem like a major sponsor.[13]
  4. Use social media. Even if you don't know your tweets from your tags, or assume that your tailor shop doesn't need a social media presence, make use of all avenues to spread the word about your business. Some 80% of your fellow small business owners are using social media, particularly for marketing.[14]
Open a Small Business Step 17.jpg
    • The appeal of social media advertising is its low cost and direct connection to potential customers, but remember that the trade-off is likely to be a greater time commitment. Do a detailed analysis of your targeted and existing customer base and try to coordinate your brand identity and message across platforms.[15]
    • With the ever growing number of social media platforms, you may feel the temptation to be active in as many as possible. But don't spread your business (or yourself) too thin. If your salon targets 40-something moms who likely use Facebook, focus your energies there. Don't get caught up in posting all the time; a few times a week will likely suffice. You'll be plenty busy with all the other details of opening your business.[16]
    • There are, however, ways to link multiple social media platforms. Consider this option if you can manage it without, again, spreading yourself too thin at a very busy time.
    • Social media presence is especially important if your business is online based. In addition to social media, consider internet advertising using technology like Google Adwords. Adwords allows an ad from your business to pop up whenever a user searches particular key words on google. When somebody clicks on your ad, you pay. For an online based business, this can be especially important since it communicates your business to the broader internet. It is also important for traditional brick-and-mortar businesses too, since it reaches an audience that primarily is exposed to the internet as opposed to other forms of media.[17]

[Edit]Opening for Business

  1. Consider when to make your opening "grand." As mentioned, there is no requirement to hold your Grand Opening on your first day of business, and it is often advisable to wait even a couple of weeks before staging it.
Open a Small Business Step 18.jpg
    • Schedule your Grand Opening for a day and time that suits your product or service — a Saturday morning for a diner; a Friday evening for an ice cream parlor; early evening for a martial arts studio.[18]
  2. Make it an event. Work hard to build excitement in the days and even weeks leading up to your Grand Opening.
Open a Small Business Step 19.jpg
    • Use the term "Grand Opening" in your marketing — it makes it seem more special than just an "open for business" notice. Create excitement by offering prizes, giveaways, demonstrations, special deals, etc., for visitors that day.[19]
    • Hire a photographer to capture the event for media (traditional or social) consumption. Bring in live entertainment, extra staffing, even security if you expect an especially large crowd.[20]
    • If your business and/or its location aren't conducive to a large public Grand Opening, consider having an event more along the lines of a "launch party" at a nearby restaurant, banquet hall, etc.
  3. Guarantee a positive customer experience. Plan ahead and do whatever you can to ensure that attendees walk away from your Grand Opening with a positive first impression of your new business. Oversights as simple as inadequate parking, long food lines, or running out of paper products in the restrooms can sour an otherwise enthusiastic reception.[21]
Open a Small Business Step 21.jpg
    • Have extra staff on hand to make sure customers don't have to wait too long for service or attention.
    • If parking may be an issue, try to work out arrangements beforehand with other businesses or community groups — perhaps setting up satellite parking at a nearby church, for instance.
    • Send attendees home with a token of your appreciation — ideally something with your logo on it — along with a coupon / special deal for a return visit.
  4. Involve the community. Establish your connection to the local community from the very start of your business. Let people envision your business having a positive community impact for years to come.
Open a Small Business Step 20.jpg
    • Invite the local press to your event, but also other local business and community leaders. Network with as many as possible and establish yourself as a member of the local team.[22]
    • If possible, align your Grand Opening with a community event, when local crowds will already be gathered. Make it seem like a part of that larger celebration. Sponsor the entertainment at the holiday lighting celebration or midsummer festival. Advertise both your business and your deep connection to the community.[23]
