Windows 8 TV Ad Campaign Kicks off Today Along with the Official Netflix App

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 11:39 AM PDT

Netflix Windows 8 AppYou might love it, you might hate it, but like it or not Windows 8 hits the streets in less than two weeks on October 26th. As a result the Microsoft marketing machine has kicked into overdrive, and we finally have our first of what is likely to be many television bound ads designed to reel in consumers far and wide to the new platform.

The newest video appears to squarely target the family crowd, an audience that until now has been gobbling up iPad's en-mass. It will be interesting to see if they carry on with this approach, especially considering that they are also possibly the most likely to be turned off by the radical new changes. Windows 8 may find a place in the market at the end of the day, we're just not sure busy parents are going to be its biggest cheerleaders.

Coincidentally, the ad is also launching the very same day the official Netflix app hits the Windows 8 store. This is an important app to secure considering the Microsoft Surface also launches on October 26th, and it gives new buyers something to with their tablets day one.

Oddly I was unable to find it under any of the "spotlight" categories, but a quick search via the charms bar in the store app uncovered it quickly enough. This type of discovery problem is nothing new to users of Windows 8, and is a problem that needs to be solved fast. My test of the app was also cut short by an error message, but perhaps others will have more luck.

P.S.

Anyone else out there appreciate the irony that that Google is footing the bandwidth bill on these videos?

Dell Starts Taking Pre-Orders For The XPS 12 Convertible Tablet / Ultrabook. Starts at $1,199.99

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 10:53 AM PDT

Dell XPS 12Few would argue that Windows 8 is a radical departure from a software perspective, however this generation it won't just be Microsoft looking to set new trends. Redmond's hardware partners are gearing up fast for the October 26th release date, and Dell has started taking pre-orders for its new XPS 12 convertible Windows 8 tablet/Ultrabook.

The XPS 12 is notable from a design standpoint due in part to its one of a kind 12.5-inch 1080p swivel touch display. This allows the machine to seamlessly convert from an Ultrabook to a multi-touch tablet when the mood strikes you. At 3.5 pounds it's a somewhat chunky Ultrabook, but as a tablet it's almost unworkable.  The XPS 12 weighs about the same as 9 current generation Amazon Kindle e-readers stacked one on top of the other, making it awkward to use in the most common tablet scenarios that spring to mind.

If after these words of warning you're still intrigued, then you might also care to know that the $1,199.99 starting price nets you a fairly capable Ivy Bridge machine to justify the heft. The base configuration sports a Core i5-3317U part clocked at 1.7GHz (2.6 GHz turbo), 4GB of Ram, and a 128GB SSD. In typical Dell fashion you can upgrade components to your heart's content if you'd rather go with a Core i7, and money is no object.

On a side note Dell has also added touch to its XPS One 27 & 23 all in one desktops. These range from $779.99 - $1,599.99 depending on your needs, however both are ultimately much less interesting than the XPS 12.

World of Warcraft Druid reaches 90 without a kill

World of Warcraft Druid reaches 90 without a kill
Pacifist characters have a pretty colorful history in World of Warcraft, and the latest chapter in their non-violent march to max level has been written by a Tauren Druid named Irenic.

Irenic recently reached level 90 in Mists of Pandaria with a grand total of zero creatures killed, 92 total damage done, and one completed quest. "The one quest I got is a new unavoidable quest that is now auto-flagged as complete for all factions. It registered after I hit 86," Irenic explains on WoW's forums.

How did he manage it without a single kill? "Since the entrance to Pandaria isn't designed to be entered without questing and killing, I spent all my time doing archaeology and gathering in Kalimdor," Irenic wrote.

A must-stop on the Lord of the Rings Online tour is the former home of one of Middle-earth's most infamous inhabitants. In a recent journey, One Shots submitter Carolina stopped to take a picture of the finger-painting Gollum left behind:
Here is a warning picture I encountered while exploring Goblin Town in Lord of the Rings Online. Proceeding deep into the cave shows you this sign that something terrible lies ahead.
Personally, I think Gollum could have had a great career doing his own portraits. Check out this and several other terrific entries after the break.

The Daily Grind: Do you use other people's builds?

The Daily Grind Do you use other people's builds
I'm going to admit something that may keep me out of the Man Club for good: I'm horrible at making my own builds in-game. Oh, sure, I give it the ol' college try for a while, but if there's a way to hobble myself, rest assured that I will find it. I'm the guy who will dump points into completely useless skills (such as cribbage or sandwich-making) and ignore any hint of synergy. Dungeons & Dragons Online proved to be my ultimate Kryptonite in this.

Because of my crippling inadequacies, I often break down and resort to using proven builds devised by other players who are like unto kings and queens. It's not that I'm a min-maxer -- far from it -- but I just want to be on the same level as most everyone else. I just... I just don't want to be a corpse-in-waiting.

What about you? Do you use other people's builds or do you stick to builds of your own creation?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Massively Exclusive: Dragon Nest Lotus Swamp cinematic

      Dragon Nest title image
Nexon's free-to-play MMO Dragon Nest has been flooded with new content since its official North American release last year. New updates are first released in the game's home country of South Korea and then translated into different languages for deployment worldwide. This gives North American players a sneak peek at what lies ahead, with information on new classes, dungeons, and towns regularly hitting the web.

Dragon Nest's anticipated Lotus Marsh update is currently on its way to North America, where it will raise the game's level cap to 50 and open the Lotus Swamp town. If the Korean version of the patch is any indication of the expansion's content, it should also bring five new dungeons, the second job advancement, and the Archbishop Nest. Read on for our exclusive reveal of the Lotus Swamp story cinematic and a preview of the update's bosses.

ArcheAge underwater treasure hunting guide released

ArcheAge underwater treasure hunting guide released
ArcheAge may be a distant dream to those of us here in the West, but a few of the folks who have been playing the game's extensive Korean beta tests are at least keeping us informed about the sandbox title's niftiest features.

Case in point is a new underwater treasure hunting guide on the ArcheAge Source forums. The info has been translated from a Russian fan site, and it's accompanied by plenty of screens and video (including a map, since this is a proper treasure hunt). The process is pretty involved, and requires a ship, scuba gear, and plenty of air bags to lift chests to the ocean surface.

The guide posits that treasure hunting is more profitable than traditional gathering based on preliminary beta testing, but it also cautions that resource prices may vary quite a bit. Head past the cut for a couple of underwater exploration videos, then head to ArcheAge Source to check out the guide.

[Thanks to Dengar for the tip!]

New heroes and new trailer revealed for Marvel Heroes at NYCC
What better place to learn more about a game based on comic books than a comic book convention? Marvel Heroes had its own panel earlier today at the New York Comic Con, where devs not only shared a new trailer but announced three new playable heroes. And luckily for folks who missed the chance to see the panel live, Gazillion Entertainment has been sharing the announcements via Twitter! Along with such iconic heroes as The Hulk, Wolverine, and the Human Torch, players will also have the choice to play as Phoenix (Jean Grey), Luke Cage, and NOVA.

Although fairly brief, the new features trailer shows off different abilities, a variety of costumes, a quick peek at some multiplayer zones, and a glimpse of a few iconic villains. Check it all out after the break.

The Tattered Notebook: Linda Carlson on goat herding and community management

The Tattered Notebook Linda Carlson reveals how goat herding teaches community management lessons
What do goat herding and community management have to do with one another? On the surface, you'd probably think not much, but at GDC Online this week, SOE Head of Global Relations Linda "Brasse" Carlson explained the parallels between her job as Community Manager and her job as a goat herder.

In the talk, though, she not only gave advice on how to run a community management team but also shared some interesting observations about some of SOE's online communities in general. In this week's Tattered Notebook, we'll look at some of the highlights.

The Mog Log: Where in the world is Seekers of Adoulin?

The Mog Log header by A. Fienemann
Square-Enix has long had a very different approach to MMOs compared to the rest of the world. In some ways, this is understandable; I know that every company operates in its own way. But where American and European companies are playing the electric guitar and Korean companies are playing keytar/acoustic duets, Square seems to be bringing out the xylophone to do a heartfelt rendition of Long Distance Runaround. (For those of you not willing to click the link, that song is not normally played with a xylophone.)

As a result, on one level I'm not surprised that we know virtually nothing about Final Fantasy XI's next expansion beyond the upcoming jobs and the fact that it's not going to be released for the PlayStation 2 here in America. I am also completely baffled that in the time since the expansion's announcement we have heard nothing about it. We first found out that the expansion existed in any form back in June, and we've learned pretty much nothing new since... and that's not a good sign.
