Funcom talks inspiration and AoC's massive Savage Coast of Turan adventure pack Posted: 13 Aug 2011 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Game mechanics, MMO industry, Patches, News items, Free-to-play Age of Conan faithful, enjoy yourselves. There's simply never been a better time to be a fan of the great barbarian and Funcom's blood-drenched MMORPG based on his Hyborian stomping grounds. The year has already seen the fantasy title adopt a free-to-play business model and push out a ton of new content, and that's really the tip of the proverbial iceberg. With the new Conan film reboot arriving in theaters this month, Funcom is gearing up to launch a huge amount of tie-in content. Dubbed The Savage Coast of Turan, the upcoming adventure pack adds a large outdoor playfield and over 50 new quests to the gameworld, not to mention two solo instances, a team instance, a new raid, and plenty of new gear. Join us after the cut as we present Funcom's internally produced look at the inspiration behind all the new content, and stay tuned to Massively this weekend for some exclusive Savage Coast news as well as an Anvil of Crom interview with game director Craig Morrison. WRUP: An unrelated rant about soil quality with a picture of whales edition Posted: 13 Aug 2011 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Massively meta, Miscellaneous As I do every week, I'm using this little bit of leader space as my personal soapbox, but this week I wanted to talk about soil quality. Unfortunately, there were no good pictures about soil quality on Wikimedia Commons, so instead I went with whales. You can see some land in the distance there, land that presumably contains soil. So we're all clear about the fact that we're talking about soil rather than whales, right? Right. Now let's talk about the deplorable conditions of the soil found in southeastern Connecticut for the remainder of this paragraph.Unfortunately, it appears our choice of pictures wound up consuming the whole paragraph. Oh, well, maybe next week. Right now, it's time for WRUP, featuring the Massively staff members telling everyone what they'll be playing over the weekend. As a bonus, we've also got some comments about our favorite characters across the many games we play. So jump on past the break for information about our weekend revelries, and let us know what you'll be up to in the comments. The Daily Grind: Do you like having the freedom to play solo? Posted: 13 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Game mechanics, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous MMOs are social experiences at their core, but there's still something about having freedom on your character of choice. At times, everyone likes to step away from being responsible for other people, and operating solo means that you get to take full credit for your own success and failure. But the quality of that operation depends on the game -- Final Fantasy XI characters were largely helpless solo past a certain point, while there's little in Star Trek Online that a solo player can't handle with some patience.Obviously, being able to get plenty done solo means that you can indulge your time in the game more freely and not have to worry too much about other availability. But it also does detract from the grouping experience, and it can lead to a rahter one-note game where every enemy has to fall prey to the same solo tactics. So do you think solo-friendly game are a good thing? Do you want your games to feature a fair amount of self-reliance, or do you miss the old days where parties were the default for content? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Champions Online gives players the full Aftershock treatment Posted: 12 Aug 2011 05:30 PM PDT Filed under: Super-hero, Events, in-game, News items, Free-to-play, Champions Online The first comic series for Champions Online has come to a close, and it certainly made an impact, which makes it more than a little ironic that it's titled Aftershock. But what would a good comic series be if it didn't get a collected edition after it finished? The completed series is now available in-game, and rather than simply allowing players who've experienced the first run a rehash of the old material, the completed series offers a bit more incentive.Four new rewards can be picked up from the complete series -- a serpent cowl, a new sword, a new aura, and a quartet of action figures. In addition, the complete series features dynamic panels and all of the same core gameplay that debuted with the individual issues. So if you've been meaning to run your way through the series but hadn't quite gotten around to doing so, now would be the perfect time. Conspiracy unleashed: Funcom reveals The Secret World plans for Gamescom Posted: 12 Aug 2011 05:00 PM PDT Filed under: Historical, Sci-fi, Events, real-world, PvP, The Secret World, Massively Event Coverage The mass global conspiracy to hide the insidious secrets from the public cracked wide open as Funcom revealed that The Secret World is set to reveal the truth at Gamescom. If you're 16 years or older and attending the convention, head over to Hall 6 to check out Funcom's closed theater where a 20-minute live demo of one of the game's dungeons, The Polaris, will take place. Developers will also be on hand to talk about dungeon crawling, combat, progression, the skill wheel, and boss fights during the presentation. All players, regardless of age, can take an "initiation test" to see what secret society they should join -- sort of like a much more sinister sorting hat or guidance counselor. The studio will also be talking to the press about large-scale PvP, so hopefully we'll be learning more details about this aspect of the game next week! Posted: 12 Aug 2011 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Fallen Earth, Patches, PvP, PvE, MMOFPS, Wasteland Diaries, Post-Apocalyptic During the past couple of weeks, I haven't been playing Fallen Earth too much. I have been waiting for some changes to come along. I found the new combat system to be a bit too slow-paced and dull. It was very centered around healing. He who healed the best generally won the fights. I prefer a system in which he who deals the most damage is more likely to win. There are, of course, other tactical considerations involved in both types of combat, but the overall feel was just plain wrong in the healer-centric combat system.I'm happy to report that some changes have been made to the system. There are still a few things I don't like about the 1.9 patch, but 1.9.2 fixed almost all of these issues. I won't say it was a perfect patch, but it was very close. There are still some minor issues I'd like to see addressed, but these are probably conscious design choices that are working as intended. In this post, I'd like to cover what has changed, why it's so great, and what we will see in the coming months. The urge to log into Fallen Earth is coming back to me, and it is all due to this new patch. After the cut, I'll explain why. The Road to Mordor: Power to the levelers Posted: 12 Aug 2011 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Free-to-play, The Road to Mordor, Guides With Rise of Isengard creeping up on us, I've seen an increasing number of people begin to freak out about it, not because they're upset it's coming but because they're not prepared to partake in the expansion on day one. Now, this might not be important to you, but I assure you it's quite important to many -- lots of people like to be in on the excitement from the very beginning, and it's a special kind of torture to contemplate having to sit there and listen to your friends oohing and ahhing over the new zones and content while you're still poking your way through Moria. So because of this, some players really, really want to get a character up to level 65, prepared to do a dive roll right into Dunland when September 27th hits. It's understandable. Even I, a normally laid-back type of guy, am pushing hard to finish up Enedwaith with my Lore-master so that I'll have one character good to go on I-Day (that's Isengard Day). But what about those who don't have a level 65 in their pockets? Is it too late to get your act in gear and get up there before it's too late? Of course it isn't. I'm pretty convinced that you could even roll a fresh toon today and get him or her up to the endgame by I-Day, depending on how much time you can dedicate to it. Today we're going to look at a few leveling tips I've picked up over the years to aid those of you who want to kick in the afterburners of the leveling process so that you can make sure you're where you want to be. It's not even that hard! Continue reading The Road to Mordor: Power to the levelers The Road to Mordor: Power to the levelers originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST. Biggest EVE Online scam ever recorded nets over a trillion ISK Posted: 12 Aug 2011 01:45 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Culture, Economy, Events, in-game, Lore, Professions, PvP, News items Of all the stories that come out of EVE Online's colossal sandbox, it's the tales of criminality and dirty dealings that grab our attention the most. Thefts and scams would be cause for account closure in most MMOs, but they form a legitimate and dark part of the EVE universe. The famous Guiding Hand Social Club heist of 2005, Ricdic's EBank scandal and last year's massive 800 billion ISK Titans4U scam are just a few of the most high-profile thefts and scams to hit the EVE community over the years.Today the biggest scam ever recorded hit thousands of EVE Online players like a brick in the face, netting a record one trillion ISK in final takings. Proving that old ideas still work, Eddie Lampert and Mordor Exuel pulled off a simple Ponzi scheme on a massive scale. Promising unprecedented returns of 5% per week on invested ISK, the duo convinced over 8,000 players to open accounts in their Phaser Inc. investment scheme. Many initially dubious players were eventually convinced to invest by real testimonials from their friends and corpmates. Over 1,831.67 billion ISK was invested, 345.18 billion of which was paid out as interest and 452.72 billion of which was withdrawn by wary investors. When the business closed up earlier today its owners collected the remaining 1,034 billion ISK. To put that massive number in perspective, it's enough to buy 2,953 30-day time codes worth a total of $51,677.50. Storyboard: Get them in a tree, throw rocks at them Posted: 12 Aug 2011 01:00 PM PDT Filed under: Culture, Game mechanics, Opinion, Roleplaying, Storyboard, Miscellaneous The past week or so has been pretty terrible for one of my favorite characters in Final Fantasy XIV. Over the course of the last week, she's been drugged, been tied up, had her heart broken twice (more or less her own fault), broken someone else's heart, been scarred, and been screamed at, and she's managed to see one of her dearest friends begin to turn into an enemy. And I'm writing this on Monday, so I can only begin to imagine what's going to happen over the course of this week.Of course, there's a disconnect here because while she was knee-deep in roleplaying misery, I was having an absolute blast -- some of the most fun I've had roleplaying in a long time, actually. Now, there's something to be said there about making your characters miserable for fun and profit, which I intend to discuss next week. But it occurred to me that this is one of the fundamental disconnects between roleplayers and the non-RP part of any game's population. The goal in any MMO is to become more capable... but the goal of roleplaying, at least to start with, involves making things worse and becoming significantly unhappier. Nintendo patents "Massively Single-Player" term Posted: 12 Aug 2011 12:30 PM PDT Filed under: Culture, Game mechanics, News items Despite the fact that this may be the first time you've ever seen Nintendo mentioned on Massively, it may not be the last. According to an article at Gamespot, the 121-year-old Japanese console company has patented the term "massively single-player" to define a new genre of games that they hope to create. The basic idea is that you would play a single-player game, and (through an internet connection) what you do in that game would influence the environment or economy of the same game on someone else's console. Nintendo gives several examples of how this would work, including the construction of housing in a neighborhood, oil supply and demand, and even gossip, without those pesky "other players" messing up your game. The patent mentions the fact that people who share the same friends list may be able to see each other (much like Fable III does), but other than that, it's not so much the other players you see, but only their effects on the game's world. Does this sound like something you'd be interested in checking out, as an MMO fan? Let us know in the comments below. SWTOR will focus on endgame for Gamescom Posted: 12 Aug 2011 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Events, real-world, New titles, Endgame, Star Wars: The Old Republic With the largest gathering of European gamers less than a week away, the community team for Star Wars: The Old Republic has finally nailed down its plans for Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. As with all other conventions the BioWare developers have attended since Gamescom last year, the origin worlds for each of the classes will be available for visitors to the EA booth (inside Hall 6 of the Koelnmesse). But this year, the focus is on something a bit more high-level: Endgame.First, chosen members of the community that have applied through the SWTOR forums will fight hands-on in the Alderaan PvP warzone. Also, throughout the weekend, BioWare staff will demonstrate the Eternity Vault raid adding to endgame focus. Gamescom runs August 17th to the 21st, and the showroom floor opens at 4 a.m. EDT (10 a.m CET) Thursday and Friday, and 3 a.m. EDT (9 a.m. CET) Saturday and Sunday. With that out of the way, he also finds time to talk up a few MMOs.Highlights include a mention of Blizzard's panda-flavored expansion rumors as well as a bit of commentary on BioWare's Jedi Consular class trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Next up is a blurb about Guild Wars 2's Sylvari week, and in addition to hearing Schreiner utter the phrase "sentient tree-sprout," we get a recap of the recent blog post focused on the character designs. Bounty Hounds Online also gets a mention, and The MMO Report even has a few beta codes to hand out for the upcoming sci-fi MMO. This week's Massively mention (always the highlight of every MMO Report broadcast) is up next, and focuses on DC Universe Online's superserver merge. We who are about to PvP salute you: Guild Wars 2 to partake in e-sports at Gamescom Posted: 12 Aug 2011 10:30 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Events, real-world, PvP, Guild Wars 2, Massively Event Coverage If we aren't warring between guilds, it's not a Guild Wars title, right? Fortunately, ArenaNet thinks so too, and the studio has great plans for the PvP portion of its upcoming Guild Wars 2. Conventioneers heading to this month's Gamescom will not only get to check out the game in its shiny glory, but have the opportunity to participate in bloodthirsty PvP matches for the world to see. The Electronic Sports League (ESL) will be hosting PvP matches of Guild Wars 2 in its arena during the trade show, and everyone is invited to tune in to watch. Matches will take place between individuals and guilds, with a few developers mixing it up as well. These PvP bouts will then be broadcast on the ESL website, and developer showmatches will be followed by Q&A sessions about the PvP portion of the game. Guild Wars 2 has a busy schedule at Gamescom, with plenty of developer panels, demos, and prize giveaways planned.
