Razer's Planning a Micro Console Powered by Android TV for Fall Release

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 11:55 AM PDT

Razer Micro ConsoleA little box with big ambitions

One of the (many) things Google announced during its opening keynote yesterday at its I/O developer event was Android TV, which is somewhat of an evolution of Google TV. This time around, however, there will be a much bigger focus on gaming, so it's no surprise that Razer already has something up its sleeve. That something is a micro console that Razer plans to release in the fall.

Razer's micro console will be built around Android TV and be able to stream movies, music, and other apps for large-screen entertainment. However, the emphasis will be on gaming. While details are super light at the moment, Razer says its experience in building high-performance gaming systems, peripherals, and software will benefit the micro console's development.

"This is a console of the future," says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. "Built on Google's incredible Android TV platform, the Razer micro-console incorporates not only hardcore and casual gaming, but music, movies and other entertainment and social applications, all on an affordable system."

Razer didn't say how much it intends to charge for its upcoming micro console.

SugarSync Simplifies Desktop App, Offers New Users 75 Percent Discount

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 11:17 AM PDT

SugarSyncTry it free for 30 days

SugarSync lost a portion of its fan base when it decided to cease offering a free tier in favor of paid-only subscriptions. Since then, we haven't heard a whole lot from SugarSync, until today. SugarSync just retooled its desktop application to make it easier to use and more powerful than before, beginning with one-click access to folders, devices, and shared files, the company said.

The cloud service now offers at-a-glance information about your files and folders across the app. Without having to click on anything, you can see who owns a folder, where it's located, and which files or folders are shared.

SugarSync also promises better control over who edits or views your files and folders. You can distribute view-only files to others, or just post links to documents on the web. In the retooled desktop app, the "Public Links" and "Shared by Me" offer an easy way to view and manage what you're sharing.

Finally, it's now easier to control which folders sync to which devices. For example, you can have all folders share with all your devices, or share your work folders with just your work PC.

SugarSync is free to try for 30 days. After that, you have to pony up for a subscription plan -- for a limited time, you can save 75 percent off the first year if you're a first-time user. The cost after savings starts at $18.75 for 60GB/year for consumers, with business plans starting at $137.50 for three users and 1TB of storage per year.

Intel Top Live StreamerDevil's Canyon and other prizes are up for grabs

Here's something a little bit different -- Intel is planning to give away a whole bunch of prizes as it seeks to discover the very best streamers on Twitch. It's part of a collaboration with GoodGame Agency (of Team Evil Genius fame) to offer the gaming community a reality web series dubbed "Intel's Next Top Live-Streamer." Contestants will compete to become an official member of the Intel Stream Team.

There will be "hilarious and exciting challenges" along the way. The person who wins it all will receive a one-year talent contract and salary from GoodGame Agency, recognition as Intel's first "Next Top Livestreamer," and a decked out studio makeover complete with a Core i7 gaming/streaming system.

Twenty streamers will compete in preliminary rounds -- 15 invited and 5 chosen by the fans. Fan voting will wittle the contestants down to 8 finalists.

"These 8 finalists will compete in weekly challenges, stream to earn your votes, and contend for judges favor, all in the quest to become Intel's Next Top Livestreamer. All of this will be featured on the Intel's Next Top Livestreamer live broadcast Finals show on OneMoreGameTV starting July 30th," Intel says.

3D Printing is Fast Becoming a Hot Hobby Among Consumers

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 09:12 AM PDT

M3D PrinterAlmost half of the 3D printers sold in Q1 of 2014 were to consumers

Have you considered buying a 3D printer? Maybe you poked around but got spooked by the price tags. 3D printing is a relatively new thing in the consumer sector, and even many of the lower priced models are still cost prohibitive. Be that as it may, there's definitely interest in the category. According to Canalys, 3D printing is gaining significant traction among consumers thanks in part to several crowdfunded efforts.

"To date, the enterprise space has been the focus of 3D printing activities. Businesses from a range of industries have invested in the technology to experiment and test its potential, to expedite design and prototyping processes, or to enable local customized manufacturing," said Canalys Senior Analyst Tim Shepherd. "While enterprise engagement will continue to grow, it looks to be the consumer space that will drive shipments in the near future. We are already seeing significant numbers of early technology adopters and hobbyists investing in relatively cheap 3D printers. As prices continue to fall, the technology improves and use cases are tested, this trend is set to continue."

It's already happening. Of the 36,800 3D printers that were shipped around the globe in the first quarter of this year, Canalys says consumers gobbled up 46 percent of them. That's up from 43 percent for the full year in 2013, which is indicative of falling prices.

"In reality, there is a good number of basic printer models coming to market at sub-US$1,000 price points, and some crowdfunding projects promise sub-US$500 prices," said Canalys Research Analyst Joe Kempton.

One example is the Micro 3D (M3D) printer. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the Micro is now available to pre-order for $349 for a limited time. The doesn't include to print with -- you can add a spool of colored PLA or ABS filment for $13 -- though it's still one of the cheaper 3D printers consumers can order. Barring any hiccups, it's expected to ship in February of next year.

Maxthon Browser Lets You Fast Forward Through Forced Advertisements

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 08:22 AM PDT

Maxthon BrowserNew version of Maxthon focuses on video performance

Are you looking to try out a new browser? The latest release of Maxthon comes with a few tricks up its sleeve, including the ability to fast forward through any part of any video, even advertisements that you might be forced to watch. Maxthon makes this possible through what it calls Ad Skipper technology, which uses a combination of smart pre-fetching and a new approach to managing the browser runtime environment.

"The growth of video streaming sites that are easily accessible on desktop and mobile is fueling the current wave of internet usage. Maxthon is focused on delivering superior features that address the changing habits of our users to ultimately enhance their online experience. Ad Skipper for Maxthon PC is our latest contribution to that effort," said Jeff Chen, founder and CEO of Maxthon.

The new version of Maxthon is also supposed to do a better job with CPU and RAM management, especially compared to other browsers when watching video. It offers broad video codec support -- H.264, VP8, OggTheora, and WebM -- has a sharing option, and a boss key option in case Bill Lumbergh happens to wander by.

If you want to give Maxthon a spin, you can download it here.

Chaos Theory: The Tokyo barrier
Blue Mountain: On the road through The Secret World adventures, this was the zone that would make or break many players. It's the point when you had to really start crafting your decks more carefully and applying synergies. Not all who felt the blow of this particular skill check powered through, making it a barrier to continuing on to Egypt and Transylvania as well as completing the story mission.

Well, now there's a new barrier in town: Tokyo.

As much as I had looked forward to the Issue #9 content, and as much as I am enjoying the content now that it is here, I have to admit that Tokyo is the granddaddy of barriers. Not only are there barriers to getting to the content, but there are some to enjoying it once you get there too. And any one of them might cause players to give up on Tokyo and The Secret World before experiencing the whole update. So to help folks avoid smashing into any barriers unexpectedly and leaving bruises, let me give you the scoop on what lies ahead.

WoW reveals new human and Draenei male models

World of Warcraft character models are on their way to enjoying an eventual facelift, and the latest reveal shows off two new models as they'll appear in the next expansion, Warlords of Draenor.

The human and Draenei male character models look to be more detailed and "realistic" as we saw with the female Draenei reveal (that was first done as a not-so-popular April Fools' joke).

You can check out more details on the model revamps at the official site.

    WildStar unveils Strain-themed customization options

    Home is where corruption lies.
It is the doom that slumbers beneath Nexus. It is dread and loathing. It is a vile plague that both the Dominion and Exiles are desperately striving to purge. It's your new housing decor! Yes, the WildStar fashion police have spoken, and with the game's first major update, covering your home in the tentacles, eyeballs, and various protrusions of the Strain is all the rage this year. Also covering your clothing and mounts, because at that point why not, right?

Players will be able to pick up new plugs and decor for houses, new costume items and dyes for their personal equipment, a new hoverboard, and new mount customizations, all of which should make your character look completely Strain-infested. If that's what you want, at least. No word on what functions the new plugs will perform, but we're betting it'll be gross. Take a look at the official drop page for a few more pictures of these customizations in action.

Trion details ArcheAge's patron status, APEX system

    Posted: 26 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Trion has detailed its plans for Patron status in ArcheAge, which it says takes a cue from the company's experience in converting RIFT to a free-to-play business model. Patron status is basically ArcheAge's premium service tier, though Trion says it isn't required to play and instead "adds to the fun." Patrons will get:

    o. Bonus online Labor Point regeneration (10 per 5 minutes)
    o. Offline Labor Point regeneration (5 per 5 minutes)
    o. Increased maximum Labor Points cap (5000 maximum)
    o. 10% bonus to all Experience gained through combat or labor usage
    o. 10% discount on Marketplace purchases
    o. 5 Loyalty Tokens per day for use in the Loyalty Store (awarded on first login of the day)
    o. Ability to claim land by placing farms and houses
    o. Ability to pay in-game taxes on owned property
    o. Ability to post auctions on the Auction House by default

Trion has also announced APEX, an in-game item that grants credits when consumed and that can be sold on the game's auction house or traded between players. Much like EVE Online's PLEX, APEX will allow "industrious" ArcheAge players to pay for Patron status via their gameplay rather than real money. There's more to Trion's announcement, too, including possible F2P house ownership, so click through the links below to read the rest!

The Daily Grind: Does your guild stay together between MMOs?

I can't remember the exact moment that my MMO guildies collectively realized, hey, we are pretty good friends and we like each other enough to play other games together so maybe let's do that, but that's more or less what happened. After a few years of trying to figure out our place in the MMO world, we settled down into a pattern: The same core folks migrate to new and old games together and check them out as a cohesive unit. This year has been a bit different, though, as the big releases haven't enticed enough of us or have made it so difficult for our international group to play on the same server that it's not been worth the trouble.

What about you folks -- does your guild stick together from MMO to MMO? Or do you join a new guild for a fresh game?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Entropy discounts Founder's Packs for Steam Sale

Every minute alive, you're all playing the game by the same name.
The Steam Summer Sale is that glorious time of year when we drop money on games that we subsequently won't remember purchasing until months later, leaving us collectively scratching our heads and asking when we bought these titles. So how'd you like to add an early access MMO to that pile of games you won't remember you have? All three of the Entropy Founder's Packs are now available at a 33% discount until the end of the Summer Sale on June 30th.

The sale coincides with a recent update to the game introducing the gladiatorial combat sport known as NOVA, a free-for-all brawl where five people enter and only one leaves. The smallest package available gives players access to two character slots as well as full game access, with higher tiers including a variety of extra ships, more character slots, and bonus character creator options. If it sounds like it's right at your speed, jump in on the deal before the end of the month.

We've included the latest video interview with the devs after the break.

Swordsman opens up sales of its Hero's Pack

        Posted: 25 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Woman, get on my... oh. Oh, you did. Huh. Well, this is awkward.
Swordsman is currently in closed beta, but it's moving into open beta soon, and as is now the tradition, that means it's time to offer players a chance to buy the game. Sort of. The game is free-to-play, but if you feel like dropping $60 on the game before it launches, you can pick up the Hero's Pack, filled with all sorts of nice little prizes for your future martial artist characters.

Purchasing the Hero's Pack nets you a special mount, costume, and apprentice. You also nab 10 Mithril (which can be sold for a mountain of in-game currency), 600 East Sector Treasures (used for summoning a boss), and a ring (used for wearing a ring and getting a stat boost). Players who purchase now will get early access to the open beta as well. If you're enjoying the closed test or just like the idea and really want to buy into the game now, the option is open.

The founder and pre-order program for the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade MMO is now officially live. Founder tiers available start with the $40 Warrior Pack (which includes the game, early module access, 40,000 game points, and special perks) and run the price scale up to the $450 (and currently on sale) Xenos pack, which includes the game and early access along with 610,000 game points and even more special perks.

Not into forking over your cash just yet? At E3 a few weeks ago, Behavior Online told Massively that at launch (expected in 2016), Eternal Crusade will boast a hybrid model, with a $40 buy-to-play option and a free-to-play option that restricts players to the Ork Boyz faction. The cash shop will sell "pay-to-be-cool" cosmetics and skins, the devs said.

The studio also issued a new teaser trailer to coincide with the program launch. We've included it below.

Choose My Adventure: Final thoughts on WildStar

This week marks my last stint with WildStar for Choose My Adventure, and I'll be giving not only my overall impressions of the game for this final installment but a run-down of my thoughts on the first few levels of each class and path.

When the fantasy/sci-fi MMO launched earlier this month, I had no idea what to expect. I had watched the preview trailers and knew the general premise of the game's feel, but didn't dive too deeply into game mechanics or lore because I like to discover these things myself as I go. WildStar is the perfect game for this, in my opinion, because it's full of surprises... in a good way.

Oculus slams ZeniMax in latest legal statement

The war of words continues between Oculus VR and ZeniMax. The latest salvo comes courtesy of a legal statement issued by the former in which it denies ZeniMax's claim that key tech was developed by John Carmack before he left ZeniMax for Oculus.

"By deliberately misstating some facts and omitting others, ZeniMax makes the incredible assertion that it, a videogame software publishing company for personal computers and consoles like the Sony PlayStation, invented and developed a virtual reality hardware and software system," the statement reads, in part.

It goes on to state that the Oculus VR headset tech was developed by Palmer Luckey and that the "lawsuit is nothing more than ZeniMax seeking to correct for a massive missed opportunity through the assertion of meritless litigation."
