Just how bad will the telco tariff pinch be? Here's a lowdown

Posted:

New Delhi: Even with an announced tariff hike of 40 per cent, Reliance Jio would be cheaper by 15-20 per cent than other incumbents, analyst firms said on Monday while still awaiting for details of the company's new plans.Along with other telcom companies, even Jio has said it will raise rates by 40 per cent but has not formalised the changes. Jio said that it will be introducing a "all in one" plan from December 6 across multiple price points with unlimited voice and data, which will have 300 per cent more benefits than earlier."Similar to incumbents, we think only select packs (of Jio) will have 40 per cent increase but popular ones could have 25-30 per cent. We think the incremental 300 per cent benefit which Jio is talking about is by offering more data allowances. In our view that incrementally doesn't entice users much beyond 1.5 GB," Bank of America Merril Lynch said in a note. "Even after these hikes, we believe Jio will continue to be 15-20 per cent cheaper than the incumbent operators. If Jio data allowances are not within "fair usage policy" control, then we see upside risks to our capex investments", it said. The report also said the tariff hikes announced by Vodafone Idea (VIL) and Bharti Airtel were better than expected, which will be effective from Tuesday. While very low and very high denomination tariffs were hiked by up to 41 per cent, the popular plans saw lesser tariff hikes of 25-30 per cent. For VIL, the popular 1.5 GB/day, 84 day pack will cost 31 per cent more at Rs 599 versus Rs 458 (33 per cent hike for Bharti) and 25 per cdent hike for Rs 199 (will be now Rs 249), 1.5 GB/day pack. A 41 per cent increase comes on the annual plan of Rs 1,699 which will now cost now Rs 2,399. On an average, the tariff hikes by Bharti and VIL are of similar magnitude.Credit Suisse said after that Jio details its tariff, the premium of the Airtel and Vodafone hikes are likely to decline to 10-20 per cent for the more popular tariff plans. " Jio has also announced its intention to participate in market repair. In addition to tariff hikes by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, Jio has also announced its intention to increase tariffs effective December 6. While the details of its new plans are awaited, the company quantified the hike to be up to 40 per cent for its 'All in one plans'", Credit Suisse said. "We note that post the announced tariff hikes, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea's plans are at a 20-60 per cent premium over Jio's October 2019 'All-in-plans'. We think after Jio's announced tariff hikes, the premium is likely to decline to 10-20 per cent for the more popular tariff plans", it added. Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have raised the tariffs of their popular bundled prepaid plans by 25-41 per cent as well as the low-end plans by around 40 per cent. "Jio has indicated hikes of a similar magnitude albeit with higher benefits; details awaited. We like the way the new pricing construct is designed - it encourages up-trading and discourages down-trading; this should help recreate parity in the industry. We await details from Jio to revise our models," Kotak said.

By Anurag KotokyNEW DELHI: IndiGo has told its pilots to stop pushing engines on its new Airbus SE jets to the limit when the planes are climbing, after India's aviation regulator said the practice may have contributed to turbines failing in the air.All the budget airline's A320neo aircraft now use a lower thrust setting following take off, according to a spokeswoman from IndiGo, which has suffered 13 engine shutdowns during ascents this year. The decision was taken "in order to make every possible effort to minimize exposure of engines," she wrote in an email, adding that manufacturer Pratt & Whitney stated there's no evidence of a connection between climbing procedure and engine incidents.Ascending at maximum power can help burn less fuel as it takes less time to reach cruising altitude. IndiGo made the switch only after India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation found in a probe - first reported by Bloomberg on Friday - that full-thrust climbs could wear down the engines and probably contributed to the shutdowns, people familiar with the matter said earlier.IndiGo instructed pilots of the A320neo-family of jets last month to use no more than 93% thrust on the Pratt engines until they reach 25,000 feet (7,622 meters), the people said. They asked not to be identified because the change hadn't been made public. The airline spokeswoman said the change had "hardly any difference" in day to day operations, beyond taking two to three minutes longer for aircraft to reach optimum flight level due to lower thrust settings. "Difference in fuel consumption is marginal," she said.IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., is among the world's fastest-growing carriers. Smaller rival Go Airlines India Ltd., which uses the same Pratt engine, typically uses the more gentle alt-climb approach now employed by IndiGo and hasn't faced similar engines failures, people familiar with the matter have said.Pratt representatives didn't immediately respond to requests for comment, while the DGCA declined to comment on what it described as an internal issue for IndiGo. Airbus declined to comment on its customers' operations.Holding Back ExpansionIndiGo's mid-flight dramas have been a headache for the airline. The DGCA has said every time a new plane joins IndiGo's fleet, it must ground one A320neo that hasn't had its engines fixed. That essentially prevents Asia's biggest budget airline by market value from adding new flights until the issue is addressed.IndiGo is the world's top A320neo customer. It has 730 of the latest model on order and wants to expand its network beyond cities such as Istanbul to destinations including London.IndiGo told pilots, engineers and training crew in mid November about the "alternate max climb rating option" on its A320neo-family of jets, the people said. Such a practice is also known as a "derated takeoff."The airline's new guidelines say the Pratt engines on the A320neo cannot return to full thrust before 31,000 feet, while the bigger A321neo needs to gain a further 2,000 feet before maximum power is applied, they said. That process will reduce wear and tear on the engines, and will be applicable to all new engines as well, one of the people said.Pratt, a unit of United Technologies Corp., invested $10 billion to develop its fuel-efficient geared-turbofan engine for single-aisle jets like the A320neo, but it has suffered repeated setbacks since its commercial introduction in 2016, including a cooling problem, durability issues and delivery delays.IndiGo shifted away from engines in June with a $20 billion order to CFM International Inc., a joint venture between General Electric Co. and France's Safran SA, although those deliveries have yet to start.

Fight to take over Jaypee gets more intense

Mumbai-based Suraksha Realty, which is in the race with state-owned NBCC to acquire bankrupt Jaypee Infratech, is likely to offer additional cash and land to lenders, and higher delay compensation to homebuyers to make its final resolution more lucrative for financial creditors, sources said. NBCC Ltd is also actively considering offering more land to lenders and reduce timeline for completion of about 20,000 flats. In the last meeting of the committee of creditors (CoC) held on November 28, lenders asked NBCC and Suraksha Realty to make a final offer by next Tuesday (December 3) after revising their earlier bids. According to sources, Suraksha Realty is likely to increase the upfront payment to lenders from its current offer of Rs 25 crore. Under the land-debt swap deal, the company is considering to increase the offer of land parcels in value terms. Currently, it has offered 1,934 acres of land worth Rs 7,800 crore. For homebuyers, Suraksha Realty is looking to set aside more land for payment of delay compensation as against its current proposal to earmark land worth Rs 100 crore for this purpose. The company has proposed to bring in Rs 2,000 crore as working capital to complete construction in the next three years and will retain the Yamuna Expressway with itself. On Sunday, sources had said NBCC in the final bid could withdraw its offer related to unclaimed flats and pledged land. In lieu of these two offers, it might provide more land parcels, over and above 1,426 acre offered in its latest resolution plan. NBCC is also considering to reduce the timeline to complete pending projects from its current offer of giving possessions in four years. To settle an outstanding claim of nearly Rs 9,800 crore to bankers, NBCC in its bid submitted last month offered 1,426 acre land worth Rs 5,000 crore. That apart, it offered 75 per cent of 858 acre land, which has been pledged by promoter Jaiprakash Associates Ltd and now claimed by Jaypee Infratech. Moreover, NBCC offered to share 50 per cent of the sale proceeds of unclaimed flats after deducting receivables from earlier buyers and any expenses related to tax, duties and legal. Yamuna Expressway, which connects Noida to Agra, will be transferred to lenders, but before that, NBCC has proposed to take Rs 2,500 crore debt against the expressway for completion of pending flats. Jaypee Infratech, a subsidiary of crisis-hit Jaiprakash Associates, went into insolvency process in August 2017 after the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitted an application by an IDBI Bank-led consortium. Anuj Jain was appointed as an interim resolution professional to conduct insolvency process and also manage the affairs of the company. In the first round of insolvency proceedings conducted last year, Rs 7,350-crore bid of Lakshdeep, part of Suraksha Group, was rejected by lenders. The CoC rejected the bids of Suraksha Realty and NBCC in the second round held in May-June this year. The matter reached to the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) and then the Supreme Court. On November 6, the Supreme Court directed completion of Jaypee Infratech's insolvency process within 90 days and said the revised resolution plan will be invited only from NBCC and Suraksha Realty. As many as 13 banks and over 23,000 homebuyers have voting rights in the CoC. Buyers have nearly 60 per cent votes. For a bid to be approved, 66 per cent votes are required. Homebuyers claim amounting to over Rs 13,000 crore has been admitted. MJH HRS

NASA satellite finds crashed Vikram lander

Odisha Slurry lenders pick ArcelorMittal bid

MUMBAI: Lenders to Odisha Slurry Pipeline Infrastructure are favouring ArcelorMittal's Rs 2,350-crore cash bid to take over the company over a higher but long-drawn offer from Tamil Nadu-based Thriveni Earthmovers, three people familiar with the bids said. The company runs a 253-kmlong pipeline supplying iron ore from mines deep in the hinterland to Essar Steel's pellets plant in Paradip, Odisha. The pellets are transported to Essar Steel's main facility at Hazira in Gujarat, meeting half its raw material needs. This infrastructure for raw material supply is one of the major advantages of the 10-milliontonne Essar Steel plant in Hazira that was awarded to an Arcelor-Mittal-Nippon Steel combine by the Supreme Court, after a prolonged legal battle that ended last month."This pipeline is made for the Essar Steel plant. Nobody else has any use for it, so in a way it is surprising that Thriveni has also submitted a bid.But the ArcelorMittal offer looks more compelling because it's a full cash bid, unlike Thriveni's bid with includes a mere Rs 8 crore upfront cash," said a person closely associated in the resolution of this case. "I would think ArcelorMittal should emerge as the preferred bidder for the lenders."Odisha Slurry owes financial creditors Rs 3,300 crore, of which Rs 2,350 crore is the principal amount. 72341221 It owes Rs 2,100 crore to banks, while the other financial creditors include Srei Infrastructure Finance and also Essar Steel.ArcelorMittal's offer covers the whole outstanding principal amount. Thriveni's offer totals Rs 3,300 crore and covers both principal and interest but the crucial difference is that only Rs 8 crore of that is upfront cash. While that is just 0.24% of the dues, the remaining payment as per its proposal is spread over five years."We are more comfortable with taking the money upfront. Also, there is a doubt about Thriveni's intentions because it is biding along with Srei Infrastructure which has a history with this company and is also considered close to the previous Essar Steel owners. This deal has direct ramifications to the success of the Essar Steel case and so we would prefer ArcelorMittal," said another person involved in the resolution process. In 2015, Essar Steel under the Ruia's had sold its holding in the pipeline to Srei, a transaction which was objected to by banks who challenged it in the court. The regulator, the Reserve Bank of India, also weighed in against the move.Bankers are likely to decide on the winner by December 5 as they do not want the Rs 42,000 crore deal by ArcelorMittal for Essar Steel to be delayed in any way.

Aadhaar enabled payment system growth slows in FY20

Posted:

BENGALURU: The rate of growth in transactions through Aadhaar-enabled payment system (AePS) in the April-October period of the current financial year has dropped by more than two-thirds from the year-ago period, data from National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) shows.AePS facilitates cashless transactions through biometric authentication. According to NPCI, which runs the platform, biometric-based transactions grew by 10% to 208 million transactions in October 2019 from 189 million in April.Further, the transactions dropped in November to 196 million. In the year-ago period, the growth was more than 32% – transactions had jumped to 150 million in October compared with 113 million in April. Even last year in November, transactions had fallen to 137 million.A further consideration of the trends shows that interoperable transactions – ones undertaken by customers of one bank on the terminals deployed by another bank – have grown at a slower pace. As per NPCI data, between April and October, the number of such transactions grew at 3.5% compared with almost 50% in the same period of the previous year."The transaction count on AePS has not grown aggressively, given many large public sector banks have introduced limits on the number of transactions their customers can do on other terminals," a senior banker said, requesting not to be named.ET had reported on October 3 how large public sector banks such as State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda have limited number of transactions their customers can do on other bank micro ATMs.Among other reasons, bankers said some agents were splitting single transactions into multiple small ones to earn more commission, which is why such limits were imposed. The total number of such transactions decreased to 70 million in October from 82 million in August, which is when the limitations kicked in.On the other hand, in the first six months of last fiscal, these transactions had jumped almost 50%, clocking 48 million in October compared with 30 million in April.October usually sees high transactions because of the festive season and higher remittance from urban to rural areas."AePS in the past month (October) saw a lot of withdrawals of funds sent by families in rural areas owing to the festive season, a rise in direct benefit transfer (DBT) withdrawn by people is… a healthy indication as it implies higher penetration of financial services in the remote areas," said Anand Kumar Bajaj, chief executive officer, PayNearby.AePS has faced multiple issues around interoperability since most of the micro ATM terminals used for such transactions have been deployed by new-age banks while the customers mostly held accounts with PSBs.

US-based Capital Int’l commits to invest $120 mn in YES Bank

Posted:

Capital International, a part of the $1.87-trillion Capital Group based in the US, has committed to invest at least $120 million in YES Bank with the possibility of raising that in the future. The fund is one of the eight investors that expressed interest in investing in YES Bank and is waiting for regulatory approvals in the US, two people familiar with the matter, said.In a notice to the stock exchanges on Friday, YES Bank said a top tier US-based fund house is one of the three institutional investors that committed a total of $200 million to subscribe to shares of the bank. The bank plans to raise $2 billion on a preferential allotment basis from a total of eight investors. Besides three institutional investors, there are five family offices which have committed to invest in the bank including Canadian billionaire Erwin Singh Braich's SPGP Holdings, which has expressed its willingness to invest $1.2 billion or 60 per cent of the total $2 billion commitments received by the bank."If Capital International comes on board, it will give some solidity and respectability in terms of investors in the bank. They are one of the biggest funds and though they have committed a small amount compared to their size, they can always invest more in the future. Among all the investors announced by the bank, this is the most blue blooded and right up there among the largest private equity investors of the world," said a person closely associated with helping the bank raise funds.YES Bank did not reply to an email seeking comment. A spokesperson for Capital Group said, "We have a long-standing policy not to comment on market rumours or speculation."The bank cannot allot equity shares making up more than 25 per cent of its share capital, according to a Reserve Bank of India communication received by YES Bank.As a result, it remains to be seen whether Braich can invest all of its $1.2 billion committed because it will give him more than 25 per cent of the stake."Perhaps the bank is also preparing for a Plan B in case they need more investors later because the RBI is certainly not going to give them permission to take more than 25 per cent stake. There is still some work to be done before we know the full picture," the person cited above, said.Discussions with Braich are ongoing and are expected to conclude shortly and hence the binding term sheet for the deal has been extended to December 31, YES Bank said late Friday.Other investors include Citax Holdings and Citax Investment Group, which expressed willingness to put in $500 million. Indian investors include GMR Group with $50 million, Aditya Birla Family Office ($25 million) and Rekha Jhunjhunwala with $25 million.Foreign funds Discovery Capital ($50 million) and Ward Ferry ($30 million) are the other investors. Analysts have raised doubts over pedigree of some investors named by the bank."For nearly 85 per cent of the proposed $2 billion commitments for YES Bank (the) quality is a big suspect. To be honest, we hadn't even heard of SPGP Holdings/ Erwin Singh Braich and Citax investments. Tell me whether anyone of you have heard about them or have some knowledge of who they are? What is their business? What have been their successful investments in the past not in India, for that matter, anywhere in the world? What is their source of money?" Suresh Ganapathy, research analyst at Macquarie Capital Securities, said in a note on Monday.

Joining global debt indices can fetch India $100 bn: Nilesh Shah

Posted:

Mumbai: Nilesh Shah, noted fund manager and a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, on Monday said the country cannot achieve its growth ambitions without foreign inflows and pitched for joining global bond indices to attract more funds.Citing the case of China, which recently joined a few global indices, Shah said we can attract up to USD 100 billion through such a move.According to experts, the foreign holding cap imposed by the RBI in public debt has deterred inclusion of the country in such indices."Our savings of 30 percent is not good enough to generate 10-12 percent growth that we require. We have no option but to get foreign capital so that our growth can accelerate, and becoming a part of the global equity as well as fixed income indices will help us get larger allocation of long-term funds," he said.Speaking at an Axis Bank event, Shah, who heads Kotak AMC, said there is a need to "shed our limitation".He said China recently sold USD 6-billion sovereign bonds despite sitting on USD 3 trillion in forex reserves to get long-term foreign portfolio investors into its market."We have USD60 billion investments from debt investors but this is nothing compared to what we can potentially get if we are part of the global debt indices," he said.Shah also hit out at our poor marketing prowess, saying this has limited our weightings in the equity indices that it is a part of already and cited the MSCI Emerging Market Index, where our clout is diminishing in the face of an aggressive play by China, which had committed to increase its weighting to 50 percent from 32 percent now, which may see our weighting going down to 6 percent from 8.5 percent.Shah said at USD 2 trillion, our m-cap is around a third of China, and the weighting should also be similar, but which is not the case."We have to push our case, we have to market our case....but unfortunately, we have not done a good job to market ourselves," he said, adding if China is at 50 percent, we should be at least over 15 percent. He wondered why a scrip like HDFC Bank is not included in the MSCI Index despite the high foreign ownership in the stock, while a Chinese bank features there. He said, "we have to thank the Trump administration", explaining that because of the US interventions, the MSCI has now called out China to reform on a few measures before increasing its weighting to 50 percent.Had it not been for the US, Shah said, "China effectively would have converted the MSCI Emerging Market Index into MSCI China and other markets indices.""What we need to focus on is increasing our weighting in the benchmarks. This will help us get fair and higher allocations from investors and also long-term money," he said.Speaking at the same event, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC chief executive A Balasubramanian said the asset management industry is staring at defaults worth Rs 2,500 crore from doubtful assets of over Rs 8,500 crore.Balasubramanian also said money has indeed moved out of debt funds because of safety reasons, but cited the performance of one of his funds, which has delivered returns of over 8.3 percent per annum over a 25-year period, to illustrate that the fixed income instruments will continue to be attractive for investors.

Government may spare Google from its phishing probe

Posted:

NEW DELHI: India is not likely to act against US-based technology company Google after the search giant said last week that nearly 12,000 users may have been targeted in state-backed cyber attacks globally, which included around 500 users in the country, according to a top government official. The government is nevertheless planning to issue a notice to Google asking why it had not informed the authorities about the attack. It will also seek details of the cyber attack and its impact on Indian users, another government official said.Google may not be treated the same way as WhatsApp as the attack was not due to any vulnerability on its platform that hackers could exploit, unlike the Facebook-owned instant messaging app, where a flaw was used to inject malware, affecting 121 users in India, including activists, lawyers and journalists. In the case of Google, cyber hacking techniques such as phishing were employed, with users being responsible if they fell prey to the phishing attempt, the first official quoted earlier said."In this case, the problem is not with Google, the attacks were mostly through phishing, therefore there is no need for more scrutiny," the official said.Phishing is defined as a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as user names, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication."We routinely provide these types of warnings to users, with tips on how to protect their accounts. The warnings themselves do not mean that a user's account has been compromised," a Google spokesperson told ET in an email.Google should have informed the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) about these attempts, another official said. "The government wants to understand the extent of the impact in India, including the exact number of users impacted," said the second official. The government also wants to know what information has been stolen and the organisations that were behind these attacks. The official, however, did not say if the government's alleged involvement in this instance would also be investigated. In October, WhatsApp accused Israeli cyber intelligence firm NSO Group of injecting the malware Pegasus to snoop on over 1,400 people globally. Following the revelation, the government sent a series of notices to the company asking for information on the spyware attack.Union minister for electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad, informed Parliament last week that the government also wants to conduct an audit of WhatsApp's security systems and has sent a notice to the NSO Group as well.

How to Help End Hunger in the United States

Posted: 02 Dec 2019 04:00 PM PST

Hunger is a real problem in the United States—while there's plenty of food to go around, there isn't a great system in place for distributing the food efficiently. To help end hunger in the US, it's a good idea to spread the message about how big the problem truly is. You can start raising money to donate to organizations, volunteering at local food banks, or writing to local lawmakers asking them to help with your mission of ending hunger.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Raising Awareness

  1. Read about hunger in the US for up-to-date information. Go online to find information about hunger in the US—you can read articles providing statistics and peruse news stories covering the problem. Researching the topic beforehand will help you understand the problem, allowing you to come up with helpful solutions.[1]
Help End Hunger in the United States Step 1.jpg
    • Memorizing specific facts and statistics will help you be more persuasive and knowledgeable when discussing the topic with others.
  2. Spread the word to friends and family to encourage them to help. Start up a discussion with your family and friends about the information you've learned through researching hunger in the US. Encourage them to talk to others about the hunger crisis and help them find ways to start volunteering their time or resources.[2]
Help End Hunger in the United States Step 2.jpg
    • You can also share what you've learned with coworkers or school acquaintances.
    • Use social media to help you spread the word, or focus on talking one-on-one with people to have a thorough conversation about it.
  3. Use social media to inform others about the problem of hunger. This is a great way to reach a lot of people all at once. You can post scholarly or news articles about hunger in the US on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, encouraging people to read them.[3]
Help End Hunger in the United States Step 3.jpg
    • You could also post links to interviews about the issue, or just post a couple of facts about the issue of hunger to get people thinking about it.
    • Encourage friends and other connections on social media to choose a way to help reduce hunger, such as hosting a food drive or donating to a food organization.
  4. Organize a bake sale or run to raise awareness. By doing one of these events, not only will you be able to spread information to others, but you'll also raise money in the process. Design a run to promote hunger awareness and encourage people to sign up. You can also set up a bake sale, yard sale, or other creative event to raise money for an organization that supports the hungry.[4]
Help End Hunger in the United States Step 4.jpg
    • Create a lemonade stand to raise money, or plan a local car wash.
    • Make signs to advertise your fundraising event and hang them up around town.
  5. Start a letter campaign to encourage others to write to local lawmakers. By having lots of people write letters to lawmakers about the issue of hunger in the US, lawmakers will see how many people want change. To start your letter campaign, you can look up websites to help you with the process, such as https://help.actionnetwork.org/hc/en-us/articles/203112829-Creating-letter-campaigns.[5]
Help End Hunger in the United States Step 5.jpg
    • Brainstorm with others about topics to bring up in your letters, such as asking policymakers to increase funding for nutrition services.
  6. Host a movie screening showing a movie about hunger in the US. Movies such as "A Place at the Table" highlight the issue of hunger in the country, making them a great tool for teaching others about the problem. Plan a movie screening at a place such as your local library, community center, or even your own home to get people together to learn about hunger.[6]
Help End Hunger in the United States Step 6.jpg
    • Go online to find other movies or documentaries discussing hunger in the US.
    • Ask your local community center or other spots suitable for movie screenings if they would help you with the screening.
    • Hang flyers around town telling when and where the movie screening will take place.
    • You can even create a Facebook event for the screening and invite your friends to it while encouraging them to invite people they know as well.

[Edit]Supporting Programs and Organizations

  1. Donate excess food in your home to an organization. If you have extra canned goods that aren't being used or bought too much food the last time you went to the store, consider donating the leftovers. Do some research online to find an organization that's right for your extra food.[7]
Help End Hunger in the United States Step 7.jpg
    • Use coupons when you go grocery shopping to purchase extra food specifically to donate.
    • Packaged food can almost always be donated, and there are many food pantries or organizations (such as Ample Harvest) that will take fresh food.
  2. Contact your local food bank to learn about volunteer opportunities. Your local food bank or food pantry is always looking for people to help out, whether by organizing food, raising funds, or spreading awareness. Visit your local food bank in person, call their number, or visit their website to find out how you can get involved.[8]
Help End Hunger in the United States Step 8.jpg
    • They'll be able to tell you valuable information, such as which foods are best to donate as well as other places that need help collecting food.
    • You can also check with your church or local non-profits to see if there are any events or opportunities to help raise money for food, start a food drive, or help end hunger in another way.
  3. Host a healthy food drive in your area. Collect food from others that you can then donate to places such as a food pantry. Try to collect healthy foods instead of just junk food to provide a truly nutritious meal for someone.[9]

    • Ask for foods such as peanut butter, canned tuna, canned fruit, whole wheat pasta, or low-sodium canned beans.
    • Choose a place to have your food drive and put up flyers to advertise it.
    • Post on social media to encourage others to donate to the food drive.
  4. Set up an online food drive to easily collect food. If you aren't able to host a real food drive, you can start one online through You Give Goods. Click on "Start an Event" on the main page to set up your event, and make sure you pick a charity to donate the food to. People will be able to purchase food online through the site, and the food will go directly to the charity.[10]

How to Dress for a Conference

Posted: 02 Dec 2019 08:00 AM PST

Attending a conference is a great way to learn about new ideas in your industry and network with other professionals in your field. Conferences usually only last for a few days, so you want to make sure that you dress appropriately so you can put your best foot forward. To help you decide what to wear, check if there is a conference dress code, or do a little research about typical attire for conferences in your field. Then, whether the conference is formal, business casual, or even more casual, you can plan your outfit accordingly and feel confident that you are dressed to impress.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Assessing the Type of Dress

  1. Ask a colleague for advice on how conference attendees usually dress. Ask your boss or more experienced colleagues to find out how attendees tend to dress for conferences in your field. In most cases, conference attire is business casual. However, there are some exceptions. Asking people who have attended similar conferences can help you get an idea about what to expect.[1]
Dress for a Conference Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, while academic conferences tend to be business casual, at a fashion industry conference, you may be able to wear more statement-making attire. Asking colleagues is a great way to help you get a better idea.
  2. Take your role at the conference into account. In addition to your field or industry, taking your role at the conference into account can help you assess the type of dress you should wear. If you are presenting, for example, you'll like want to dress more formally than an attendee since all eyes will be on you during your presentation. Similarly, if you are a conference organizer, speaker, or have a management or executive role, erring on the more formal side will help ensure that you look professional and pulled-together.
Dress for a Conference Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • In addition, you'll likely want to dress in a more formal outfit that is simple, sleek, and professional if you are hoping to make new contacts to help you find a job.
    • While you may be able to get away with a more casual shirt or dark denim as an attendee, for example, try to avoid these types of more casual pieces if you're role at the conference is more public and hands-on.
  3. Check if there is a conference dress code. Look on the conference website or check any conference-related emails to see if the organizers have implemented a dress code. While dress codes are less frequent these days, they are still implemented for some disciplines.[2] If there is a dress code, it can help you determine what is appropriate for that specific conference.
Dress for a Conference Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, if the dress code is described as "business formal," you will likely need to wear a work-appropriate suit and, for men, a tie or bow tie.
  4. Look at the activity schedule and venues for clues. If the dress code isn't immediately apparent on the conference's website, look at the conference schedule to see what activities are planned and where they are taking place. This can help give you a clue about how to dress.
Dress for a Conference Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, if the conference is taking place at a 5-star hotel, you will likely want to choose a more formal outfit.
    • If the conference activity schedule includes a long walking tour, you will need to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Therefore, you can likely choose a more relaxed, casual outfit.
  5. Consider the typical dress for conferences in your field. In general, conferences in a given industry or field tend to have a similar level of formality. Therefore, even if you aren't able to find any information on a specific dress code, you'll likely be able to assess how formal you should dress based on what's typical for your field.[3]
Dress for a Conference Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, conferences in business-related fields, such as finance and business management, tend to be more formal. Therefore, if you are attending a business management conference, you'll likely want to choose a more formal outfit, such a business suit.
    • Conferences in personal wellness-related fields, on the other hand, tend to be more casual. If you are attending a conference on yoga and mindfulness, for example, you will likely be able to wear more casual attire, such as jeans and a sweater.
  6. Check social media for images of past conference meetings. Many conference organizers post updates about conferences on social media these days, including images of presenters and attendees. If you are unsure what to wear, searching on social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook can be a great way to look at pictures from past years of the conference to see what people tend to wear.
Dress for a Conference Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • One way to check social media for conference images is to search for the conference account.
    • If the conference does not have its own social media account, try searching for relevant hashtags.
  7. Choose standard professional attire if you aren't sure what to wear. You really can't go wrong with timeless professional pieces. If you are having a hard time figuring out what to wear, go for items that are clean, professional, and neutral.[4]
Dress for a Conference Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • A fitted blazer and slacks, for example, is appropriate for almost any professional conference and is a great outfit option for men and women alike.[5]
    • If you are a woman, a sleek pencil skirt paired with a neutral button-down and pumps is a classic option that is appropriate for almost any professional setting, including a conference.
    • Wearing neutral, professional basics also makes it easier to mix and match your outfits. Therefore, you won't have to pack all new pieces for every day of the conference.[6]

[Edit]Dressing for a Formal Conference

  1. Wear a more formal outfit than you do for work. In general, it is better to be overdressed for a formal conference than underdressed. While you may be able to get away with a cotton v-neck tucked into your slacks on laundry day for work, at a conference, it is important that you put your best foot forward. You only have a few days to make a good impression and if the conference is formal, you need to be sure that you are following suit.[7]
Dress for a Conference Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • As a general rule of thumb, if you are questioning whether an item is too casual, don't wear it. Even if your office is more formal and you have worn this item to work before, for the conference, stick to items that are completely in-line with the dress code or what is expected.
    • It is particularly important that you dress appropriately when you're presenting. As a result, when choosing what to wear to present at a formal conference, go for an outfit that is strictly professional, even if it means wearing something more conservative than you normally would.[8]
  2. Avoid distracting patterns or color schemes. Instead, choose pieces in more neutral, professional color tones, such as black, white, nude, or navy. When attending a more formal conference, you want people to pay attention to you and your work, not your outfit.[9] As a result, avoid wearing any items that may be distracting.
Dress for a Conference Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • Even if you love your favorite hot pink or psychedelic print shirt, for example, save it for a social occasion.
    • If you want to add a pop of color or bit of visual interest to your outfit, you can add a colorful but still muted and appropriate accessory, such as simple emerald earrings or a patterned pair of loafer socks.
  3. Choose a professional suit for an easy formal option. Whether you are a man or a woman, a well-tailored business suit will make you look sharp and professional. Conferences are often just as much about networking as they are about sharing ideas. Wearing a clean business suit in a muted tone and pattern can help you make sure that other conference-goers see you as someone respectable and important.[10]
Dress for a Conference Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • If you are a woman, you can mix up your suits from one day of the conference to the next by switching out your slacks for a pencil skirt or simple silk midi skirt.[11]
    • If you are a man, while it is perfectly acceptable to wear the same suit more than once, make sure that you pack enough shirts and ties to mix up your outfit from day to day.
  4. Go for a classic black dress if you are a woman. If you own a classic black dress, you can easily turn it into professional attire for a formal conference by adding a neutral pair of heels and pantyhose or tights.[12] Make sure that you choose a dress that is not too short (preferably one that hits below the knee), or that shows too much of your chest (boat-neck or high v-neck cuts are good options).
Dress for a Conference Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • To ensure that your black dress is business formal, avoid more flirty, flared cuts. Instead, focus on options that are straight down like a pencil skirt.
    • If you want to cover up your arms, wear a chic fitted blazer on top of your black dress. This will instantly elevate your dress into more professional attire.
  5. Wear simple and neutral closed-toe shoes. To help complete your formal, professional look, select shoes in classically professional styles and in neutral-toned colors. While you may love your new pair of peep-toe wedges if you are a woman, or navy blue boat shoes if you are a man, for a formal conference, try to keep your footwear as simple as possible.
Dress for a Conference Step 12 Version 2.jpg
    • If you are a woman, black or nude pointy-toe pumps with comfortable mid-high heels will look perfectly professional and complement almost any formal conference outfit.[13]
    • If you are wearing a business suit, classic dress shoes or loafers are a great option that will go well with your suit and keep you looking sleek and professional.
  6. Choose simple, understated accessories. When finalizing your formal conference look, avoid selecting any jewelry or accessories that are too large, bright, colorful, or distracting. Instead, focus on choosing accessories that subtly add to your outfit and that are in-line with the professional tone of your outfit.
Dress for a Conference Step 13 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, if you are wearing a tie, choose an option with a small, simple pattern, such as a small plaid or dot pattern, that comes in a muted, neutral color scheme, such as a navy with a subtle red or dark green pattern.
    • When selecting your jewelry, for example, avoid any large costume-style jewelry. Instead, focus on simple, professional pieces, such as a sleek leather or metal watch or thin gold hoop earrings.
    • If you plan to accessorize with a bag, focus on finding an option that is both practical and professional, such as a simple tan leather tote or a brown leather briefcase.

[Edit]Getting Dressed for a Business Casual Conference

  1. Choose less formal fabrics and styles in professional cuts. When you are attending a business casual conference, you still want to look professional. To dress more casually but still present yourself well, choose items in more relaxed, comfortable styles and fabrics that still look put together and professional.[14]
Dress for a Conference Step 14 Version 2.jpg
  2. Remove or replace 1 or 2 standard business-attire items. If you want to wear more formal pieces but tone them down, you can remove or replace 1 or more formal pieces of the outfit with more casual pieces. That way, you will be able to utilize your more formal conference attire and make it feel more appropriate and approachable for a casual conference.
Dress for a Conference Step 15 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, if you are a man and plan to wear a business suit to a casual conference, skip the tie. You can also choose a more relaxed style of shirt, such as a simple plaid, rather than the more formal crisp white button down you may usually wear with your suit.
    • If you are a woman, you can replace your suit jacket with a cardigan sweater, or wear a silk or cotton blouse to make your suit pants or skirts more causal.
  3. Add in elements of your personal style. While you want to look professional and appropriate at the conference, you also want to feel comfortable and confident in your outfit. Business casual conferences allow you to exhibit a bit more creativity with your attire. Adding just a touch of something unique or personal can make your outfit a bit more casual by showing more of your individual style.[15]
Dress for a Conference Step 16 Version 2.jpg
    • At a business casual conference, feel free to get a bit more creative with colors and patterns. While you still want to keep things fairly muted and professional, you can add in a fun accessory or colorful top to give your outfit a bit more pizzazz.
    • If you are a man, for example, you could select a tie or pocket square in a color or pattern that suits your personal style.
  4. Avoid wearing anything overly trendy or revealing. While business casual conferences allow for a bit more flexibility, you should still steer away from wearing any clothing pieces that are too trendy, revealing, or impractical. While you want to feel like yourself, you also want to present yourself as a professional who takes their job seriously.
Dress for a Conference Step 17 Version 2.jpg
    • To help you decide whether an item is too trendy or revealing, consider whether your boss would wear it to a conference. If the answer is no, you should probably choose something different to wear yourself.
    • For example, avoid wearing any tops that are too tight, low cut, sheer, or cropped.
    • While trendy items, such as platform wedge shoes and cropped flare jeans, might look great for a night out with friends, these items are best left at home when you are packing for a conference.
  5. Try khakis with a crisp shirt and blazer for a clean-cut look. Instead of a business suit, try clean-cut, fitted khaki trousers with a crisp shirt and a tweed or cotton tailored blazer. The fabric of the khaki and tweed will make your outfit more casual than a formal suit, but the tailored fit of the trousers and blazer will keep you looking sharp.
Dress for a Conference Step 18 Version 2.jpg
  6. Go for a midi skirt with a cotton turtle neck top. For a more feminine look to wear to a business casual conference, try a midi skirt in a less-structured fabric and fit, such as a flowy silk fabric. Wear your midi skirt with a simple cotton turtle neck or tie-neck top and classic nude or black pumps for an on-trend, stylish business casual look.[16]
Dress for a Conference Step 19 Version 2.jpg
  7. Wear tailored cropped pants for a structured, less formal option. Instead of suit pants, try a pair of well-tailored cropped pants. The cropped cut will keep your outfit from looking too formal, while the tailored fit will ensure that you'll still look pulled together.
Dress for a Conference Step 20 Version 2.jpg
    • To complete your look, pair your tailored cropped pants with a silk tie-neck blouse and flats.[17]
  8. Choose dark wash, tailored jeans if you want to go more casual. If you want to wear jeans to a business casual conference, choose jeans that are well-tailored and come in a darker wash, such as a dark blue or black.[18] While wearing denim will immediately make your outfit more casual, you can still look professional enough for a conference if you choose a well-structured darker wash.
Dress for a Conference Step 21 Version 2.jpg
    • Make sure that you avoid any denim that is faded, ripped, frayed, or baggy. While you may want to tone things down for a business casual conference, you still need to make a good impression. Faded, ripped, frayed, or baggy jeans may send the message to other attendees that you don't take your career seriously.
    • Pair dark jeans with a blazer, collared shirt, and dressier shoes for a relaxed but still professional look.

[Edit]Going Casual for a Conference

  1. Avoid wearing any pieces that are wrinkled, stained, or ripped. While dressing for a casual conference gives you much more flexibility in your attire, you'll still want to make sure that you look professional and appropriate. As a result, avoid wearing any pieces that are wrinkled, stained, or ripped – even if the ripping is purposeful. Instead, stick to items that are clean and well-fitted so that you can present yourself well even when you are going more casual.
Dress for a Conference Step 22 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, avoid any tops that are cut-off or frayed at the bottom or sleeves. While cut-off cropped tops are great for lounging and running errands, such items may send the wrong message at a conference.
  2. Choose comfortable, work-appropriate shoes. When you are dressing down for a more casual conference, choose shoes that are casual and comfortable, yet covered-up. Even for a casual conference get-together or activity, you'll likely want to avoid flip flops or sneakers, as both options can instantly make your outfit a bit too informal. Instead, focus on finding shoes that will complement or even elevate your more casual outfit.[19]
Dress for a Conference Step 23 Version 2.jpg
    • Ballerina flats or lace-up boat shoes, for example, are both great options that pair well with jeans or a simple dress for more casual conference.
  3. Bring an extra layer in case you've dressed too casually. If you are attending a more casual conference but you aren't quite sure about your outfit, bring a slightly more formal item that you can wear on top of your outfit to make your look a bit more professional.[20] A simple cardigan sweater, tailored blazer, or classic beige trench coat are all options that can instantly elevate your outfit if you get to the conference and feel a bit underdressed.
Dress for a Conference Step 24 Version 2.jpg
    • By bringing an extra layer, you'll also have option to put on your sweater or jacket if the conference rooms get a bit chilly.

How to Prepare for a Winter Storm

Posted: 02 Dec 2019 12:00 AM PST

Is Mother Nature's snow and ice extravaganza hitting your area hard this year? Having a few emergency supplies on-hand can save you a lot of discomfort and trouble when the storm hits. Stock up on items you need to survive so you can go without leaving your house for a few days. And, by the way, don't forget to keep the tools to help you leave at hand. Once the storm begins, cuddle up, stay informed, and stay warm.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Stocking Up Before the Storm

  1. Get a snow shovel. Get a quality snow shovel so you can dig yourself out if need be. You may also need to shovel to dig your car out once the storm is over.[1]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 1 Version 10.jpg
    • Try the shovel out before you buy it. Check that it is easily handled.
    • Consider getting a small snow shovel to dig snow out of smaller corners.
    • Rock salt is effective at melting snow, but it can be devastating for your local water and soil, not to mention the sidewalk. Use a shovel or hot water instead.
  2. Buy flashlights and battery powered lamps. Put fresh batteries in your lamps and flashlights if a storm is coming. Go for a model that can power your cell phone if you can.[2]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 2 Version 10.jpg
  3. Stock up on candles and holders. In case your flashlight suddenly gives out or you run out of batteries, you can light your home the old-fashioned way. However, fire from candles during a blackout is a real risk. If you use candles, put them in safe holders. Keep them away from anything flammable never leave them unattended; and put them out before going to bed.[3]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 3 Version 10.jpg
  4. Fill some shelves with non-perishable food. Stock up on canned soups and vegetables, powdered food, and grains like rice and pasta. Make sure you have enough to last your family at least three or four days. Find a hand-operated can-opener too.[Image:Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 1 Version 9.jpg|center]][4]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 4 Version 10.jpg
    • If you drink coffee, get instant coffee.
    • If you have pets, stock up on pet food as well.
  5. Fill up some containers of water. If you're worried about the pipes freezing, stock up on some water. You can buy it bottled – either in small bottles or in gallon jars. You can also simply recycle a few gallon jugs or purchase some, then fill them from the tap.[5]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 5 Version 10.jpg
  6. Gather blankets and warm clothing. You may already have these items, but remember you will need enough blankets to keep you warm without any heat and in adverse conditions. Consider purchasing mittens, thick woolen socks, and a hooded sweatshirt, if you don't already own these items.[6]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 6 Version 10.jpg
  7. Locate your first aid kit. You never know what kind of injuries or emergencies will happen when the lights go out. Buy a first aid kit if you don't have one, and familiarize yourself with the contents.
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 7 Version 10.jpg
    • Check through your kit to make sure you have sterile bandages, disinfectant, antibiotic ointment, and over-the-counter painkillers available.
  8. Get your hands on a camping stove or grill. A gas-powered camping stove is a wise investment for any emergency situation. If you have an electric stove in the kitchen a camp stove is almost a necessity. Be sure you use it with proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, and have plenty of backup fuel.
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 8.jpg
  9. Find some matches. You can use these to light your gas range, camping stove, and candles. Do not rely on lighters, as these can run out of fuel or break down all too easily.[7]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 9.jpg
  10. Ensure you have a phone you can use. Get a cordless cellphone charger if you can. Landline phones work during power outages because the power comes from the phone company. However, cordless home phones will not work when the power is out.[8]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 10.jpg
    • Many states require at least one wall plugged phone, which receives power from the telephone connection, in all households.
  11. Stock up on diapers, formula, and baby food. If you have an infant, make sure you have a few days of supplies for them. Consider getting disposable diapers, as you may not be able to do laundry.[9]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 11.jpg
    • Buy powdered milk, as fresh milk may spoil.
  12. Get a refill on your prescription medications. If you're not due for a refill, call your doctor and explain that you're worried about running out during the storm. Get enough to last you for several days.
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 12.jpg
    • In some states, pharmacies are permitted to issue emergency refills when there's a dangerous weather alert. Check your state's regulations.[10]
  13. Consider investing in a battery operated radio. \ It's best not to rely on cell service or wireless connections during a storm. With a radio, you can get news without wall power. Make sure the batteries are good. You can buy a motion charging radio, as you can with a flashlight.[11]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 13.jpg

[Edit]Planning Far in Advance

  1. Winterize your home. Protecting your house and outbuildings from the cold can save you a lot of money and hassle down the line. Insulate walls and attics, caulk and weather-strip doors and windows, and install storm windows or cover windows with plastic.
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 14.jpg
    • Clear rain gutters and repair roof leaks in order to avoid clogging and flooding.
    • Cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or other structure during a storm.
    • Consider hiring a contractor to check the structural strength of the roof. Make sure your roof can sustain the unusually heavy weight of snow and ice.
    • Insulate pipes and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid them freezing.
  2. Invest in a carbon monoxide detector. If you ever need to run a gas stove inside your home for heat or cooking, you'll definitely want a carbon monoxide detector on-hand. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, but deadly.[12]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 15.jpg
  3. Keep your supplies fresh. Check the batteries in your flashlights every so often, and make sure you have enough potable water and non-perishable food to last your family at least 48 hours. Once every year or two, replace your current stock of canned goods with a fresh batch
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 16.jpg
  4. Consider investing in a generator. If the power frequently goes out where you live, consider getting a portable or stationary electrical generator. Generators cost anywhere form $400 to $10,000 dollars.[13]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 17.jpg
    • Run the generator outdoors. Do not run it in your house or garage.
    • Plug equipment directly into the generator. Do not use your home's electrical system while the power is out, as this could harm utility crews.[14]

[Edit]Staying Safe During the Storm

  1. Keep the heat in. Losing heat is definitely uncomfortable, but you can survive it if you keep yourself warm.[15]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 18.jpg
    • Stop your pipes from freezing. Go around your house and turn on every faucet so that it's dripping just slightly. Keeping the water moving through the pipes should help prevent them from freezing.
    • Seal up any drafts. Put towels at the bottom of any doors that have a gap, or around drafty windows. If your windows are single-paned, close the curtains or pin a blanket up over them to keep the heat in.
  2. Keep yourself warm. Bundle up in warm clothes and stay near your loved ones. If you're all in a room together you'll help keep each other warm with your body heat.
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 19.jpg
    • Dress in layers. Put on a thin layer of synthetic clothing close to your skin and cover as much as your body as you can. Long underwear or warm leggings will help. On top of that, wear as many layers as you need to keep warm, finishing with a pair or two of warm socks and a sweatshirt or coat with a hood.
    • Wear a head covering. You lose a lot of heat from the top of your head, so keep it covered. If you don't have hooded clothing, wrap a scarf or towel around your head, or put on a warm winter hat.
    • Stay in bed. Put as many covers as you need onto your bed, and hop in. Keeping your body heat in an enclosed space under the sheets will help you stay as warm as possible.
    • Cuddle up. Join forces with a freezing roommate or family member and huddle/cuddle under the same blankets. — You'll warm up faster.
  3. Stay updated. Having current information is vital in an emergency, so make arrangements to stay informed.
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 20.jpg
    • Watch updates on the news or listen to the radio for as long as you can before power goes out.
    • Use social media for updates. If you don't have access to a battery-operated radio, follow national and local disaster agencies (such as FEMA) on Facebook and Twitter. Check periodically for updates.
    • Use SMS messaging if your land-line service is down. You can send an SMS via basic text messaging, or through Twitter updates. Get the phone numbers or Twitter handles of all your family members, keep them handy, and make sure they know how to reach you.
    • Keep tabs on your family members. Try to find out where everyone is before the storm and make a plan to stay in a safe location. If you're going to be separated from anyone, set up a pre-determined time and method for touching base again (such as connecting via text message every 12 hours).
  4. Keep the fridge closed as much as possible. This will help it stay cool in spite of the lack of power, and keep your food from spoiling as quickly. Only open the refrigerator when it's absolutely necessary, grab what you need, and close it up.[16]
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 21.jpg
    • Place frozen items outside. Make use of Mother Nature's freezer, and put them in a snowbank outside. If temperatures are below freezing, you could also keep refrigerated items on an enclosed porch.
  5. Plan some entertainment. It can help you stave off boredom while you wait for the power to return.
Prepare for a Winter Storm Step 22.jpg
    • Play cards. Use a classic deck for games like Blackjack, Poker, War, Go Fish, Crazy Eights or Egyptian Ratscrew.
    • Read a book (to yourself, or aloud for others). Try to pick an engrossing epic that will keep you engaged and entertained for hours, such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Harry Potter novels, or whatever interesting book you happen to be reading.
    • Get artsy. Draw on pads of paper, or do handcrafts like crocheting or knitting.

[Edit]Tips

  • Charge tablets, laptops, phones, etc. before a storm if you want to use them in case of a blackout/power outage.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Never use charcoal or a propane heater in an enclosed area without proper ventilation. Carbon monoxide can build up. Silent and odorless, it is deadly. Cook on the back porch or near an open window.
  • One of the first things you need to do during a blackout is unplug anything that's in a wall outlet. Power can come back in spikes, which can cause severe damage.
  • During a power outage, don't use data to play online games or text friends. You may need it to call someone or check the status of the outage.

[Edit]Things You'll Need

  • Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment
  • Canned food
  • Can opener
  • Battery powered radio
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • A self powered radio and a self powered flashlight. Batteries will run down eventually, especially if you live in a remote area that is iced in. Some models will also charge your cell phone.
  • Coleman stove or grill
  • Enough fuel to run the stove
  • Blankets
  • Lots of clothing
  • Water
  • First aid kit
  • Foot and hand warmer packs
  • Matches
  • Extra hats, socks and mittens

How to Improve Your ACT Score

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 04:00 PM PST

If you've gotten your ACT results and they're not as high as you hoped, you may want to consider taking the test again. A higher score increases your chances of being accepted into the college of your choice and can help you earn scholarships, so it's worth the effort and preparation involved in taking the test again. When you're properly prepared, retesting can raise your score by several points. In fact, students who retook the ACT scored an average of 2.9 points higher on their composite score than people who took the test only once.[1] By practicing efficiently and using solid testing strategies, you can improve your ACT score.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Analyzing Your Score

  1. Review your score report. You can get a copy of your test booklet to find out which questions you missed. Use your score report as a guideline to help you focus your efforts. Concentrate more of your efforts on improving your weaker areas to practice more efficiently.[2]
Improve Your ACT Score Step 1.jpg
    • As you're reviewing your score report, reflect on your testing day. Take notes of any sections that you felt were difficult or places where you ran out of time and couldn't complete the questions.
    • If you scored high on a particular section, don't devote too much of your practice time to that area. Don't aim for perfection; it's better to target your weaker areas to improve your score.
  2. Use data to your advantage. As you're practicing, make notes to help refine your study techniques. Time your practice and track which sections are taking the longest, and how many questions you're able to complete within the time limit. Analyze which questions you're missing the most often, and try to figure out why. [3]
Improve Your ACT Score Step 2.jpg
    • Keep track of your practice test scores to monitor progress. As your scores improve, shift your focus to weaker areas.
  3. Space out your study sessions. Rather than long weekly sessions, try several short daily sessions. Schedule two or three 30-40 minute blocks of study time with breaks in between. Cramming in too much information all at once is counterproductive and could lead to burn out.[4]
Improve Your ACT Score Step 3.jpg
    • Consistent practice is important, so once you've made your schedule stick with it.
  4. Rethink your time management strategy. The ACT is a fast-paced test. Plan ahead how you'll manage your time effectively to maximize your score and avoid leaving questions unanswered. Decide how you'll handle hard questions, and how you'll make sure you're staying on track timewise.[5]
Improve Your ACT Score Step 4.jpg
    • When in doubt, guess! A blank answer is a guaranteed loss of points, but a good guess could result in points.
    • Consider choosing a standard answer like C to bubble in when you're running out of time. When the five-minute warning is called, fill in all unanswered questions with the standard answer to avoid blank answers.
    • A digital watch with a silent timer is a great tool to make sure you're staying on track.

[Edit]Seeking Additional Practice Help

  1. Take an ACT prep class. ACT prep classes can help you learn effective test-taking skills and strategies. They can also help you target your weak content areas. Bring your results with you so your teacher can help you devise an efficient study plan. [6]
Improve Your ACT Score Step 5.jpg
  2. Work with a tutor. A tutor is great if you need more one-on-one help and attention. Tutors are also a great resource for help with filling in knowledge gaps in specific content areas. You can ask another student who is great in your weaker subject areas to help you out or hire a tutor from a local tutoring company.
Improve Your ACT Score Step 6.jpg
  3. Maximize low-cost resources. Not everyone can afford a tutor or prep class, and that's ok! There are tons of reliable free or inexpensive resources to help you do your best on the ACT. Check your local library for ACT practice tests, or utilize online resources like Khan Academy's math, science, and grammar tutorials.[7]
Improve Your ACT Score Step 7.jpg
    • If your library ACT prep books are out of date, that's ok! As long as they are authentic ACT prep material, they'll be helpful
    • Consider forming a study group with your friends! It will make studying more enjoyable.

[Edit]Preparing for the Test Day

  1. Pack your bag the night before the test. Make sure you have your ticket, your ID, several sharpened pencils, and an ACT approved graphing calculator. This will save you a lot of stress, and prevent you from running out the door without something you need. [8]
Improve Your ACT Score Step 8.jpg
  2. Properly fuel your body. Your brain works more efficiently when it has the proper fuel. Eat a breakfast high in protein to give you the energy and stamina to complete the test. Bring healthy snacks in your bag to refuel on your breaks. Make sure to drink plenty of water. [9]
Improve Your ACT Score Step 9.jpg
    • When packing your snacks, choose foods like fruit, nuts, and cheese for healthy lasting energy.
  3. Go to bed early. Your brain can't operate at peak capacity if you're tired. Not getting enough rest affects your processing and speed and memory. Make sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep so you can perform your best. [10]
