One Shots: A nuclear explosion of friendship Posted: 09 Feb 2014 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Screenshots, City of Heroes, Guild Wars 2, One Shots, The Secret World, Final Fantasy XIV, Miscellaneous I'm always so very proud of you readers when you take me up on one of my weekly screenshot challenges, like a proud papa who sees his child take those first few steps to the computer, sit down, and engage in a 40-man raid. So big props today to reader Rhime, who captured an impressive-looking spell effect from Final Fantasy XIV."My in-game character on the left center is Kavu," Rhime wrote. "Our free company had a photo night, and I managed to capture a lot of shots of our mucking about on the beach near Costa del Sol. This shot depicts a friend and me posing in combat stance with a couple spells running (fire on the ground and the shiny blue star between us). I hope you like it!" I do indeed! We've got a great collection of player-submitted game photos for you to see today, so let's not waste any more time hanging out in this paragraph. The Daily Grind: Do you appreciate environmental hazards? Posted: 09 Feb 2014 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous Whenever I find lava in an MMO zone, my first instinct -- as in real life -- is to jump right into it and see if it will hurt me. If it does, then I die horribly while giving a salute to the developers for caring enough to make such a hazard more than a cosmetic visual. That's not to say that I always appreciate how virtual nature might trip me up, slow me down, obscure my vision, or outright kill me. But even as I grouse about it in chat, I realize that for me it's an essential part of feeling as if the world is believable and not merely a stage set. From lightning to blizzards to lava flows to poisonous swamps, do you appreciate environmental hazards? Are they important even if you don't like them? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Make My MMO: Crowdfunding January 26 - February 8, 2014 Posted: 08 Feb 2014 04:00 PM PST Filed under: MMO Industry, Massively Meta, Miscellaneous, Crowdfunding, Make My MMO The crowdfunding train just keeps rolling right along, with passengers always coming and going. New passengers hop aboard while others hop off at their desired destination. Sadly, some have to disembark early -- such is the case with Universe Rush and Antilia. Although the Kickstarter campaign fell far short of its goal, Antilia does plan to continue development on its own.On the brighter side of things, some passengers reached their stop; Tales From The Strange Universe reached its goal, and both it and Novus AEterno (which brought in over 3.5 times its initial goal) will now take their places in the funded category. The Repopulation, earning over 175K during this latest Kickstarter run, disembarks at Betawatch station thanks to its ongoing alpha testing. Catch up on all the news for all these titles as they journey through crowdfunding here in Make My MMO. Norrathian Notebook: EQN Landmark alpha 101 Posted: 08 Feb 2014 02:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Game Mechanics, New Titles, Free-to-Play, First Impressions, Guides, EverQuest Next, Sandbox, Norrathian Notebook You know you've got it bad when you don't want to leave a game long enough to write about it! But that's exactly how this last week has been for me and EverQuest Next Landmark. Don't get me wrong; it's an awesome change to be so eager to play that you willingly stare at a login queue (getting to listen to Jeremy Soule's music while you do is definitely a bonus!) and even spend hours gathering materials, knowing that it will all be wiped. It's just been a long while since that has happened to me. Luckily, the alpha has had downtimes, allowing me some sleep and a chance to whip this first impressions piece and quick-start guide up for you.Even with many of the core features from the game still missing, this alpha shows you straight off that EQN Landmark truly is a whole different game. The term innovative is not just a catchphrase here; it's a summary. As such, jumping in can leave eager players a bit overwhelmed or frustrated. So this here's a quick introduction course with hints and tips to get you started. The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XIV's story post-2.1 Posted: 08 Feb 2014 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Lore, Patches, Opinion, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, The Mog Log, Subscription Something kind of surprising happened in Final Fantasy XIV's first major patch: The story kept chugging along quite coherently. And not just through the main story quests, either. Yes, the primary focus was obviously there, but there were a lot of things taking place, wheels within wheels, building on the narratives established in 1.0 and seriously working toward the next major set of events rather than simply being a set of padding.I should warn readers, once again, that there will be spoilers for the game's story below. That includes both the patch story material and the main story from the core game. If you haven't finished the main story and unlocked the Crystal Tower yet, you may want to stay away. Or you can just read on ahead and be spoiled. I'm not going to tell you how you should enjoy your game stories. You should also finish the Hildibrand storyline, although I'm not spoiling that; it's just amusing.
