Blade & Soul adds new zone for Korean CBT2 Posted: 22 Aug 2011 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Lore, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Blade & Soul We haven't heard much about Blade & Soul of late, but the Korean martial arts MMORPG from NCsoft is still alive and kicking. The game's second closed beta phase starts August 29th, and according to ThisIsGame.com, the invite-only testers will have a new zone to explore. The Great Desert looks to be the primary stomping ground for CBT2, as the dastardly villain who killed your master at the beginning of Blade & Soul's story has fled to the region and is leading players on a merry chase through the game world. In terms of gameplay proper, the Great Desert is said to feature 10 instanced dungeons, but beyond that we don't know much about it as of yet. We'll bring you more info on the new testing phase as soon as it becomes available. Blade & Soul adds new zone for Korean CBT2 originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. Face of Mankind under new management, adding new features Posted: 22 Aug 2011 09:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Business models, Game mechanics, MMO industry, News items, Roleplaying, Sandbox If you've ever played Face of Mankind, you may have gotten something of a blast from the past in your inbox this morning. The sci-fi sandbox MMORPG is under new management, and the team at Nexeon Technologies sent out an email blurb advertising the fact that the game has undergone significant changes (and has a new website and forum to boot).Nexeon provides a list of all the tweaks that have occurred in recent months, including frequent patches and bug fixes, account portal integration, a new tutorial, and the implementation of famous New York City locales including Brooklyn and Ground Zero. The press release also hints at major updates still in the planning stages, including an item shop, additional colonies, customizable apartments, and more. Face of Mankind is notable for being one of a very few MMORPGs to emphasize roleplay, community, and player-driven politics as primary gameplay systems, and you can read more about the title at its official website. EverQuest cracks the door wider to peek in on Veil of Alaris concept art Posted: 22 Aug 2011 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Galleries, EverQuest, Expansions While November is still a ways off, EverQuest players have a lot to be excited for as the title's 18th expansion bakes in Sony Online Entertainment's creative ovens. Today, the company has released three new pieces of concept art -- along with a wireframe model -- to give us more of an idea of what to expect out of Veil of Alaris. The art shows off some of the structures of Alaris, including a costal town and various towers, as well as the mysterious inhabitants of the lands. Alaris will consist of 12 new zones, half of which are raid zones. In addition to Alaris itself, the expansion will feature a level cap increase to 95 and a welcome revamp of the guild hall system. There will also be more armor sets, a cultural armor tier, and the ability to resize hotbars. You can check out all of the concept art goodness in the gallery below! The Daily Grind: Do you mix up game mechanics? Posted: 22 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Game mechanics, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous The other day I was chatting with an EverQuest II guildmate who was looking to mail some resources to my crafting character. Save your coin, I told her, and I'll just come pick up the stacks of mats since they numbered close to 200.She raised a quizzical eyebrow and asked me in no uncertain terms what the heck I was talking about, as EQII charges a flat 50 copper per mail no matter how many items are attached. I've played so many fantasy games over the years -- a fair few of which up the postal charges depending on the quantity and rarity of your attachments -- that I had forgotten how user-friendly EQII's implementation really was. Today's Daily Grind is all about similar senior moments. Do you or have you played a lot of similar MMORPGs, and do you occasionally mix up their mechanics? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Miss a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week? You've come to the right post.Gamescom has owned the hell out of August, and we've spent the week staying on top of the deluge of news coming from Cologne. Star Wars: The Old Republic took top MMO honors and revealed Huttball, while Guild Wars 2 kept the pressure on with multiple videos and PvP details. We learned about several brand-new and what-have-you-been-up-to MMOs like WildStar, Otherland, Transformers Universe, Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes, and World of Battleships, and Funcom dropped a bombshell by announcing a release date for the ever-secretive The Secret World. It wasn't all about Gamescom this week, though, so hit the break and check out what else we covered! EVE Evolved: Bringing back the glory days Posted: 21 Aug 2011 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Culture, Economy, Expansions, Game mechanics, Professions, Endgame, PvE, Opinion, EVE Evolved In years gone by, exploring the unknown far reaches of the EVE Online universe meant setting a course for nullsec. With no way to install a permanent residence in the most lucrative far-off systems, players would launch dangerous expeditions into the deep with the hope of striking it rich. Nullsec was the only place to mine rare ores containing megacyte and zydrine, and piracy wasn't as common as it is today. For putting themselves at the risk of pirates, miners were rewarded with an income stream greater than that of any other profession in the game. It was a golden age in exploration that wasn't to repeat itself until March 2009's Apocrypha expansion opened 2500 hidden wormhole systems for exploitation.Things have changed considerably since those early days of EVE. Player-built starbases and outposts have transformed the face of nullsec, allowing alliances to build themselves an empire in the void. December 2009's Dominion expansion brought a complete revamp of the nullsec sovereignty mechanics, allowing alliances to upgrade their space but dramatically increasing the cost of system ownership. Despite all of these updates and improvements, over the past several years we have somehow lost a lot of what made nullsec great in its glory days. Local industry has been replaced by risk-free logistics, and nullsec's risky but rewarding mining profession is now greatly overshadowed by safe highsec mission-running. With a new iterative nullsec revamp scheduled to begin this winter, I use this week's EVE Evolved to speculate on what can be done to bring back the glory days of nullsec industry. Posted: 21 Aug 2011 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Galleries, Screenshots, Tabula Rasa, One Shots Our One Shots image today comes to us from Joe, who managed to turn a very unfortunate misstep into a photo op from Tabula Rasa:I remember when I first discovered Pinhole Falls. I came to it from above when I followed a river to a small lake near the edge of a cliff. I wondered why it was called Pinhole Falls when I couldn't see any water falls around me... until I jumped into the lake and fell through the waterfall to my death below. Other of than the unique structure of the waterfall, I loved that they went to the detail to include a rainbow in the waterfall's mist.Environment week has been so popular that we're continuing it all next week. The game world is an area that most developers put a huge amount of effort into, and it shows. Do you have a favorite landscape, particularly eye-catching weather effect, or hidden jewel in an out-of-the-way location? Snap a screenshot of your favorite MMO area, tell us a bit about what and where it is, and send it to oneshots@massively.com. Posted: 21 Aug 2011 01:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Game mechanics, New titles, Professions, Star Wars: The Old Republic What are these two Star Wars: The Old Republic companions working on? If you've been following the game for any extended period of time, you know they are working on Crew Skills. This is BioWare's answer to crafting in SWTOR. But Crew Skills reach well beyond crafting; players can gather resources and accumulate faction, as well. When BioWare introduced us to the system a long while back, only eight crew skills were revealed. However, on Friday, the Community Team gave us a stealth update to the Crew Skills page, revealing all the categories. For example, Archaeology is now listed under gathering skills. Crafting skills will apparently grant players Armstech, Cybertech, and Synthweaving. And finally, we will be able to send our companions on Investigation and Underworld Trading missions. The Star Wars: The Old Republic Crew Skills page has all the latest information; check that out, then watch Massively next weekend for all the TOR PAX information. Great sand dunes, long shadows, and the sun burning hot all day. It's no place for the weak of heart. Designing an entire game that takes place in that setting isn't easy, either. Sure, many MMOs feature a desert zone or area and might feature a desert people whom we can choose to play. Generally, though, MMOs are lush and full of green. Perhaps gamers just prefer elves, forests, and wet weather effects?Nadirim has pulled players into a great expanse of desert and asked them to find adventure. I have to admit that desert area in games like Vanguard: Saga of Heroes are usually not my favorite, but I can understand their appeal. The desert is one of the last alien landscapes in our lives. Most of us have trees around us or a local swimming pool or at the least a green lawn to trim. Then we imagine an area devoid of anything leafy and it feels surreal. Luckily, Nadirim does a good job in many areas, so it was a pleasure to step into the sand. Click past the cut and I'll tell you more.
