Asus TD300 Dual-booting Tablet Reportedly Postponed After Google Pressure

Posted: 09 Mar 2014 04:19 PM PDT

Asus TD300 dual-booting tabletThe device was showcased at CES 2014

How often do we see promising prototypes and concepts mesmerizing attendees at trade shows, only to never be heard of again or, if they do, fail to hit store shelves in a timely manner? Although not the first device of its kind, the Android- and Windows-booting Transformer Book Duet TD300 did get some decent press when it was first showcased at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. Sadly for those holding their breath for the device, the TD300 is said to have run into a major hurdle.

Apparently, Google is not too pleased with the whole idea of Android being made to share tablet/laptop screen space with rival Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system and has, per a Digitimes report, managed to exert enough pressure on Asus for the latter to postpone the x86-based TD300.

In light of some recent developments, it appears as though that Microsoft may have softened its stance on such dual-booting devices. Perhaps Microsoft is hoping that a more conciliatory approach in this matter is likely to do it more good than harm, especially considering how it has very little to lose in the smartphone and tablet compared to Google. Even though this report may not be true (often the case with Digitimes), we can see why Google might have an issue with devices capable of booting both Android and Windows.

Holdouts Take Note: Microsoft Readies Penultimate Patch for Windows XP

Posted: 09 Mar 2014 03:56 PM PDT

Windows XP Support to End Next Month

Support for Windows XP to end next month

Windows XP support is entering its final stages. This coming Tuesday will see the release of some of the last security patches for the operating system which, despite its advanced age, still commands a sizable share of the PC market and simply refuses to die.

Microsoft will be delivering five security bulletins on this month's Patch Tuesday. If you're a Windows XP holdout, what you should really be concerned about is the fact that all five security bulletins affect Windows XP. With Windows XP support scheduled to end on April 8, now is a good time to abandon the 13-year-old operating system if you haven't done so already.

Of the five security bulletins, two are rated "critical" and three "important". One of the critical bulletins will address a zero-day bug in Internet Explorer that last month prompted the Redmond-based company to issue a "Fix it" tool to help temporarily block ongoing attacks until such time as a more permanent fix was available.

"Windows XP is affected by all five updates, and there is really no reason to expect this picture to change; Windows XP will continue to be impacted by the majority of vulnerabilities found in the Windows ecosystem, but you will not be able to address the issues anymore," wrote Qualys CTO Wolfgang Kandek in a recent blog post.

"So you need a strategy for the XP machines remaining in your infrastructure. We are still seeing a significant number of XP machines in our scans, ranging from around 25% in our consumer oriented service BrowserCheck to under 20% in our enterprise oriented data from QualysGuard."

"Of the remaining issues, one is an important privilege issue, probably going to be a kernel or kernel driver patch; never something to ignore but less important than a critical/remote issue," wrote Ross Barrett, senior manager of security engineering at Rapid 7, in a post on security news site Help Net Security. "The other two are the seldom seen 'security mechanism bypasses', probably the same issue being patched in Windows and in Silverlight.  We will have to wait and see how exploitable this turns out to be.  If it turns out that some of these issues are in the wild and under exploitation, then that will be change the circumstances of what to prioritize."

Asus, which has yet to launch a Chromebook, has become only the second vendor to launch a Chromebox, with Samsung being the only other company in the fray. However, the two companies will soon have some more company, as Hewlett-Packard has also announced plans to launch a Core i7-powered Chromebox sometime during spring 2014.

Massively Exclusive: Turbine on the future of Asheron's Call and the studio

When has putting an MMO into maintenance mode ever signaled a bright future for a game? Even so, that's what seems to have happened for Asheron's Call, which is preparing to not only transition into a maintenance mode phase but drop subscription fees and allow for player-run servers by the end of the year.

The announcement was so unusual in the industry that we had to reach out to Turbine to get more perspective on this move. Asheron's Call Executive Producer Rob Ciccolini took the time to answer a few questions about the change for the game, Turbine's recent layoffs, and how the studio is adjusting going forward.

Outer space: It looks cool whether it's in color or black and white. Case in point? Check out both varieties of today's headlining screenshot, submitted by reader Chris.

"Here is the deep space science vessel USS Aurora passing over one of the moons of Bajor in Star Trek Online," Chris writes.

Personally, I think the light and dark contrast looks so much cooler in black and white. That's of small consolation to the crew of the Aurora who went blind sailing directly into the sun, but hopefully their families will find some solace in my admiration.

The Daily Grind: Have games replaced movies?

A friend and I were talking about The Last of Us film adaptation recently, and his indifference to the project in spite of being a huge fan of the game raised an interesting question. He basically said that he doesn't look forward to movies anymore, because MMOs and games in general have become his preferred entertainment medium.

I pretty much agreed, which was startling because both of us are thirtysomethings who grew up idolizing films and filmmakers from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Now, though, if it's not a Batman flick or a fantastical HBO series, I'll get around to it whenever, if at all. There are just too many great games to explore!

What about you Massively readers? Have games or MMOs replaced movies and television for you?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Free for All: Why developers need to stop apologizing

Remember the old saying "confidence is attractive"? Well, it is. It's possible that we've all been the victim of a confident person at one time or another, whether we're buying that extra add-on for our cable package or "investing" money into a Kickstarter. This is exactly why an MMO developer needs to be confident and keep the apologizing to a minimum.

Apologies come in many different forms. Over the course of our lives, we spend a lot of time giving and receiving apologies. It's not as sinister as it sounds; saying "sorry" helps cut down on confrontation and can even help to form new relationships. Unfortunately it's also very easy to apologize too much. In this age of indie development and crowd-funding, developers need to be aware of when they are saying sorry too much, and players need to watch out for overly apologetic people.

Can Funcom Blame Falling Numbers on Free-to-Play?

This week, mega-publisher Funcom announced its profits were down considerably, and blamed the drop on heavy competition among free-to-play MMOs. While there's certainly a lot of noise out there these days, with a new MMO appearing every five minutes, the company's reasoning seems faulty. After all, isn't competition what free enterprise is all about?

Windows 8.1 Update 1 RTM Build Leaks onto Web

            Posted: 08 Mar 2014 03:14 PM PST

Leaked Windows 8.1 Update 1 screen grab.

Aimed at appeasing mouse- and keyboard-wielding users, the update is now available on file-sharing sites across the Internet

Microsoft appears to be having a hard time keeping secrets. Prior to its official announcement at last month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the upcoming Windows 8.1 Update 1 (hereinafter referred to as "Update 1")  was arguably one of Microsoft's worst kept secrets. And now that the update is official, Redmond's inability to keep things secret has come to the fore again, with the RTM build of Update 1 ending up on a number of cloud storage services and torrents way ahead of its scheduled public release.

The leak occurred when the said build was discovered hiding in plain sight on Microsoft's Windows Update servers earlier this week. The company apparently did not want everyone and their curious mother to download the update and therefore employed the tried-and-tested concealment tactic of assigning the files less-than-obvious names. That tactic, however, did not work as intended on this occasion.

Not only did the files get discovered, but some ingenious people even figured out a simple way of gulling the Windows Update servers into believing that they were Microsoft employees, thereby gaining access to the files. Although the registry hacks that made this possible no longer work, the damage has already been done and Update 1 is now available for download on a number of file-sharing sites.

Slated for release on April 8, Update 1 is Microsoft's latest attempt at winning back those incensed by the operating system's Modern UI. A large part of this update is aimed at making the Modern interface easier to use for mouse- and keyboard-wielding users. Some of the key changes include the appearance of shutdown and search buttons on the Start Screen, the enabling of the boot-to-desktop option by default, and the ability to pin Windows 8 apps on the task bar.

Perfect Ten: Game franchises that became MMOs

Popular franchises have been known to jump between various entertainment media, from games to television to movies to comic books and even to pogs. We should not gasp in utter amazement that this is also the case with many of our beloved MMOs; we should nod sagely and accept the terrible truth.

There are several video game franchises that have culminated in -- or at least have taken a detour through -- the land of MMOs. For gamers who wanted more and especially did not want to see their journey end, an MMO continuation is a welcome answer that's usually hiding its own problems. But nevermind that; let's march down the halls of history and see the yearbook photos of these franchises when they were young!

I've noticed that every so often in our comments someone will be looking for a specific type of MMO and will be soliciting recommendations for that. I thought that today we could help each other out: If you're looking for a new or specific type of MMO to play, then put down what you're looking for in the comments. Well, that was fast, if inevitable. A tipster named Mike let us know that according to an email blast just sent out to fans, developer Bio-Hazard Entertainment is putting the unauthorized-but-hopeful Harry Potter Online MMO on hold indefinitely. Statements on the official site seem to confirm the halt to the project, albeit obliquely:
It hurts us all:( our hearts are broken and torn. Bio-Hazard Entertainment and all its team love every single one of you loyal wizards and thank you for everything you have done. Sometimes people just like to ruin things for others. As loyal HP fans we all stand strong and united! Please remember here at BHE we love you all and you are the greatest fans we could have asked for! BHE site coming soon so you can join us in all our productions!

The team is discussing using what they have made and making their own MMO based off of what you guys have suggested, except not HP related. But lets all unite together and show WB that this is needed! WIZARDS UNITE!

World of Warcraft has another dev watercooler out today, this time talking about health (your character's, not your own), healing, and what the team will be doing to improve related systems come Warlords of Draenor.

For starters, the devs will be doubling player health in the expansion to make characters more durable in PvP. "The net result of these changes is that individual attacks will knock a smaller chunk off of a player's health pool in PvP, but your survivability in PvE won't be affected," Blizzard posted.

Other upcoming changes include reducting base resilience and battle fatigue to practically nil, increasing creature damage, increasing the effectiveness of heals, reducing the power of aborbs, and "making smart heals a little less smart." Some smaller, cheaper healing skills will also be removed from the game, and a few instant-cast heals are on the chopping block as well.

A reader named Josh recently wrote to Massively to ask about the viability of a career in games journalism. He's not a kid with stars in his eyes; he's an adult who works for an elite tech company, and his dad is a published journalist himself. He once focused his MMO hobby into a livestreaming channel and blog but shut them down because of the time involved, and now he's considering whether a career shift to doing what he loves might be worthwhile.
As a 30-year old with a family of three, I have a feeling that it would be very difficult to transition into the world of technology journalism. My impression is that it is an industry that does not really pay that much, and therein lies my quandary. My question for you at Massively is whether it is really possible to pursue the field of technology/gaming journalism and still support a family? And what traits are desirable in a technology journalist? Do editors look for people who have journalism degrees and existing experience, or is it a situation where you can step up to the plate and impress someone with your existing skill? How many of you that work for Massively actually support yourselves and your families based on your journalism, and what did it take to get to that point in your careers?
Unfortunately, Josh's gut feeling is correct and terribly timely.

Eerie comparisons between MMOs and real life surface

                      Posted: 07 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PST

We all joke about how unrealistic MMOs are to our mundane, tax-filled lives, but digital marketing agency Epiphany did a little digging to compare how virtual worlds and the real one stack up in various ways. Some of the results proved astounding.

With World of Warcraft, Epiphany noted that the population in both the game and the US military have about the same percentage of males (84% to 83%), while EVE Online's male population (96%) is more similar to that of the astronaut crowd (90%). The agency also noted how Second Life has 10 real-world embassies in it and that a previous ban of real-money trading in the game caused a very real financial crisis for a bank that wiped out $750,000.

So how do these three titles compare to real-world cities in regards to population? World of Warcraft at its peak was close to Moscow's population (11.5 million), while Second Life almost hit the levels of San Fransisco (825K) and EVE Online barely surpassed Edinburgh's 495,000.

You're the best around! Nothing's gonna ever keep you down!
With all of the crazy red plant ladies and detective girlfriends and blown-up cities, it's easy to forget the real meaning of Guild Wars 2: warring with guilds. Actually, these days it's more about warring with other worlds rather than guilds, but that title was already taken back in 1939. Still, you can look forward to the next bout of competitive world-vs.-world action during the 2014 spring tourney, running from March 28th until May 30th.

The tournament will use a Swiss-style matching system rather than an elimination ladder; worlds are assigned points based on performance, then matched against other worlds based on their performance. The result should be that the best worlds are pitted against one another instead of being subjected to pre-arranged matchups. Players will be awarded tickets for participation after the dust clears, with more tickets going to players who are on higher-ranked worlds. For the details and more information about what you can spend tickets on, check out the official posting.

Composer Jeremy Soule won't be going back to Tyria, as he reminded fans today that he has signed a contract to exclusively create MMO music for EverQuest Next and EverQuest Next Landmark.

On his Facebook page, Soule responded to a fan's query about his future projects: "No, I won't be returning to Guild Wars. EverQuest has an exclusive with me for the future projects that involve MMOs. [Guild Wars] was a good experience over many years. As with all good things, it had to come to an end."

Soule was the main composer for Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. He has also contributed to The Elder Scrolls Online main theme but will not be doing any other music for that title.

[Thanks to Bogotter for the tip!]

So is Massively's Larry Everett, who took the time to break down the short video reveal on Hyperspace Beacon in order to extract as many details as possible for the game's faithful.

Larry notes a few of the possibilities for player apartments, including an appearance designer kiosk, a cargo hold, a mailbox, a faction banner, a repair droid, a mission terminal, and a moonroof.

Give the video a watch after the break and sound off: What features and decorations would you want in your SWTOR apartment?

                        Gardening: not even once.
If you've been playing Final Fantasy XIV since launch, odds are good that you've seen what remains of the Amdapori civilization -- a dungeon crawling with cultists. The game's next major patch is going into more detail than that, though, giving players the opportunity to explore the new Amdapori Township dungeon and see what rank creatures have grown to fruit in the decaying town. This new dungeon is accompanied by two new hard modes to provide a triumvirate of options which have just gotten an official preview.

The hard mode of Brayflox's Longstop sees players battling the Goblin Illuminati to protect a secret recipe pilfered by the eponymous Brayflox, while Haltali's hard mode pits you against denizens in the refurbished and reclaimed training grounds. All three dungeons require a minimum item level of 55 for challengers, with the promise of rewards far greater than those of the current max-level dungeons. Take a look at the full preview for more lore and unlock requirements.

Shroud of the Avatar eyeing PvP balance while placating its 'large segment' of PvEers

The 63rd edition of Shroud of the Avatar's Update of the Avatar is a biggun. It covers topics ranging from upcoming events to the latest chapter of the Blade of the Avatar novel to current dev thinking on various game mechanics.

One of those mechanics is PvP, and executive producer Starr Long's treatise touches on the fact that the team wants to a) have PvP, b) have PvP that isn't segregated via dedicated servers, and c) avoid forcing PvP on the "large segment of the community" that doesn't want it. Some of his proposals include PvP zones, duels, and guild warfare.

The Road to Mordor: LotRO's big battles are a big bust

                        LotRO
Recently my journey through Helm's Deep came to a close as I finished all of the quests plus advanced the epic story as far as it could go. Overall, I loved the expansion: It had great pacing, beautiful scenery, memorable quests, and an obvious dedication to doing The Two Towers right. But there was one glaring fault that Lord of the Rings Online seemed to save for the last, which I discovered during my foray into the big battle system.

Other than visiting them in a couple of press tours, I had been avoiding big battles (even though you can jump in one starting at level 10) because I wanted to experience them organically as part of the storyline. I wasn't necessarily anticipating them, but I wasn't dreading them either. "Mild curiosity" is perhaps the emotion that I identified within my breast, and as it turned out, that was wildly overpreparing for the experience that followed.

Big battles are, I'm sorry to say, a big bust in LotRO. Sure, they have their positives and moments, but for a system that Turbine spent over a year to create and shoved aside instances and raids in favor of putting into the expansion, it should have been so much more. So what went wrong?
