Windows 8.1 Update 1 RTM Build Leaks onto Web

Microsoft appears to be having a hard time keeping secrets. Prior to its official announcement at last month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the upcoming Windows 8.1 Update 1 (hereinafter referred to as "Update 1")  was arguably one of Microsoft's worst kept secrets. And now that the update is official, Redmond's inability to keep things secret has come to the fore again, with the RTM build of Update 1 ending up on a number of cloud storage services and torrents way ahead of its scheduled public release.

The leak occurred when the said build was discovered hiding in plain sight on Microsoft's Windows Update servers earlier this week. The company apparently did not want everyone and their curious mother to download the update and therefore employed the tried-and-tested concealment tactic of assigning the files less-than-obvious names. That tactic, however, did not work as intended on this occasion.

Not only did the files get discovered, but some ingenious people even figured out a simple way of gulling the Windows Update servers into believing that they were Microsoft employees, thereby gaining access to the files. Although the registry hacks that made this possible no longer work, the damage has already been done and Update 1 is now available for download on a number of file-sharing sites.

Slated for release on April 8, Update 1 is Microsoft's latest attempt at winning back those incensed by the operating system's Modern UI. A large part of this update is aimed at making the Modern interface easier to use for mouse- and keyboard-wielding users. Some of the key changes include the appearance of shutdown and search buttons on the Start Screen, the enabling of the boot-to-desktop option by default, and the ability to pin Windows 8 apps on the task bar.
