So it is getting colder down here in Canada and my hands have been freezing a lot lately. I see some people wear gloves or have one of those hot packs available whenever their hand freezes, but wow after long hours of gaming my hands are sometimes frozen stiff on the mouse.

Virtual Reality: The future of the gaming?

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 08:53 AM PST

VR or Virtual reality is a technology created decades agó; even in the 90s we would occasionally find a VR game in the arcades that typically consisted of a platform to stand on and a huge headset. For the first time this technology is now coming into our homes thanks to a viable piece of gaming […]

ath_adg1Established audio manufacturer steps into the world of gaming

Audio-Technica, a company that has been around for over 50 years, has unveiled a new line of gaming headsets this week at CES 2014. Known for designing, manufacturing, and selling audio equipment, this is the first time that the company is offering two headsets that will cater to gamers.

The ATH-AG1 is a closed-back headset that will retail for $249.95 while the ATH-ADG1 is an open-backed device with a more expensive pricetag of $299.95. Both headsets feature a condenser microphone with 100 degree range of motion, self-adjusting 3D wing-support system, 1 meter cable, 3.5mm gold-plated connector, and a USB adapter with a 2 meter long extension cable.

With Audio-Technica's core double air damping system (D.A.D.S), coupled with 53mm drivers, the ATH-AG1 is expected to provide a deep, resonating bass while offering total isolation. Meanwhile, the ATH-ADG1 has been given a honeycomb aluminum casing and 53mm drivers in conjunction with Bobbin-wound CCAW voice coils, providing a high quality of sound and comfort due to its open-air design.

The ATH-AG1 is  available now for purchase while the ATH-ADG1 is currently not available.

CES 2014: Getting Better Acquainted with Razer's Project Christine [Video]

Razer Project ChristineAn in-depth look at Razer's modular PC concept

Easily one of the most unique products being shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) so far is "Project Christine," Razer's modular PC concept. Depending on the level of interest in such a design, Razer says this could turn from a concept build into a shipping product by next year. We wanted to learn more about Project Christine, so Jimmy headed over to Razer's booth for a thorough examination.

One of the concerns with a system like this is that the reliance on proprietary parts could make it an expensive proposition for end users. Having to run to Razer each time an upgrade is in order would be a costly hassle, but Razer tells us one of the keys to making this work is lining up third parties. That means users would have a choice when it comes time to, say, swap out the GPU or shove more RAM into the machine.

It was also interesting to learn that the system uses a combination of oil, water, and mineral water cooling. The PCI-E backbone of Project Christine gets the mineral water treatment, interlacing through the modules. Since there are no fans, the system runs completely silent.

There's plenty more to digest in the following 10 minute video. Give it a look and tell us what you think about Project Christine in the comments section below!

CES 2014: Gaming at 12K with Nvidia! [Video]

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 08:45 AM PST

Nvidia 12K GamingPCs win, plain and simple

It doesn't matter if you own an Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or every tablet that was every made -- you still won't be able to match the level of awesome that a PC can accomplish. To prove it, Gordon wandered over to Nvidia's booth where the GPU maker blew onlookers away with a triple monitor setup running at 12K. Yes, that's three 4K Ultra HD monitors, all attached to a monster gaming PC built by Origin PC.

Of course, gaming at 12K is by no means affordable. Not only will the triple-monitor setup put a hurt on your wallet (three Asus 4K panels will set you back $2,400), but the Origin PC powering them was configured with four GeForce Titan graphics cards. Wondering why Nvidia and Origin PC didn't opt for four GeForce GTX 780 Ti video cards? We're told it's because the 6GB frame buffer on the Titan cards helps with pushing 1.5 BILLION pixels per second.

Enough chatter, check it out for yourselves, and be sure to sit back a ways from your keyboard so you don't soak it in drool:

CES 2014: AMD Suite Tour [Video]

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 08:26 AM PST

AMD Nano PCAMD puts its game face on

One way AMD has been able to stay in the game, so to speak, is by focusing on graphics performance. It's been a point of emphasis ever since the chip designer acquired ATI, and especially since the introduction of APUs (Accelerated Processing Units). The emphasis on graphics and gaming in general was on display at CES, where AMD showed off a controller accessory for 10-inch tablets and a Nano PC running FIFA 14.

Starting with the tablet accessory, AMD's "Project Discovery" controller is a reference design the company built for third parties. AMD won't market and sell its own controller, but hopes peripheral makers will pick up on the design and run with it.

One thing that immediately stands out is how similar it looks to the Razer Edge. One of our issues with the Razer Edge is that it's a bit heavy. AMD feels its Project Discovery accessory is light enough to game comfortably on the couch, though it will be interesting to see what final products by third parties end up looking and feeling like. Here's a closer look:

Perhaps more impressive is the Nano PC AMD brought to the show. This remarkably thin device wields a Mullins APU, 2GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Though small in size, it seemed to have no trouble running a demo of FIFA 14 at 1080p. Have a look at it, along with AMD's DockPort, which allows you to covert your Windows tablet into a desktop.

CES 2014: Oculus Rift Tour [Video]

Oculus Rift at CESDemoing the newest Oculus Rift prototype with positional tracking

Excitement continues to build over Oculus Rift, the virtual reality headset that raised a whopping $2.4 million on Kickstarter. Jimmy had an opportunity to try out the latest prototype, which trades the LED screen for OLED and has an external camera to support positional tracking. In other words, Oculus Rift now looks better and also knows when you're leaning in for a closer look at an object.

Jimmy compared the new prototype to the original and noticed right away that the screen door effect is greatly reduced. And while the Oculus Rift team hasn't disclosed what resolution the new prototype runs at, it's clear that it's been upgraded from 720p. Join Jimmy on his virtual tour here:

The inclusion of positional tracking is the obvious star of the updated Oculus Rift, but it's also worth noting that text is much easier to read on the sharper display. Jimmy says that text is clear and readable even when moving your head around. Watch Jimmy blast some bad guys in the following video:

CES 2014: Enermax Suite Tour [Video]

Enermax Digifanless PSUFans, fans, and more fans (and a fanless power supply)

Things can get crazy at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but one company that kept its cool is Enermax. We mean that literally, folks. Gordon stopped by Enermax's booth at the show to see what the company brought to show off, and the answer is fans. Lots of fans, some of which lit up and reacted to sound. On the flip side, Enermax also brought with it a fanless power supply that's 80 Plus Platinum certified.

Gordon is a confessed LED freak of sorts, and if you are too, you'll get a kick out of this 39-second video of some 30 LED fans spinning and reacting to Swedish House Mafia's "Don't You Worry Child." Check it out:

Enermax also had on display its new Twister Pressure fan with a rated airflow of 79.96 CFM at just 1,800 RPM. It only puts out 25 dBA, which is roughly equivalent to a low whisper. Have a look/listen:

Lastly, Gordon got a chance to play with the Enermax Digifanless power supply. It's rated at 500W, has no fan, and is 80 Plus Platinum certified. It's also digital so you can track vitals such as wattage and how efficient it's running. In the video, Gordon fires up Furmark with the PSU powering a dual graphics card system. See what happens here:

The Summoner's Guidebook: Reckless risk-taking in League of Legends

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

Most people who play League of Legends tend to take really silly, ridiculous risks. If you've read the Summoner's Guidebook for any length of time, you know that I always recommend playing your cards close to your chest and avoiding uneccessary risk-taking.

However, being extremely cautious is not the best idea in the long-term. I'm not suggesting that taking risks all the time is good, but I do advise taking at least one or two stupid gambles every game. Calculated risk-taking is important to victory. You can't be timid and let the enemy walk all over you, but you also can't be mindless. It's important to know the difference.

MMORTS Kingdom Under Fire 2 picks a platform and will release this summer
If Kingdom Under Fire 2 sounds vaguely familiar but you just can't quite place it, that could be because the MMORTS was announced six years ago this month then went underground, popping its head up only a couple times in 2010 and resurfacing once in 2013. And over the coarse of those years, the game switched platforms, from the Xbox 360 to the PlayStation 3. Now, Kingdom Under Fire 2 has returned, and it will launch this summer on the PlayStation 4 (which will feature content exclusive to the platform) and the PC after a period of open beta testing.

Field Journal: Seeking instant gratification in RIFT

Let's go away, you and I, to a strange and distant land.
I've always been pretty open about my feelings on RIFT: I have an immense admiration for the mechanical ideas and the sheer effort Trion makes, but the world-building and aesthetic choices put me to sleep. The game firmly belongs in the category of those games I wish I liked but don't.

While I played the game's first 20-something levels (not to mention trying out several alts into their teens) early in its existence, it just could not hold me. Further attempts, such as during free weekends, in the unlimited free trial, and after the conversion to free-to-play, uniformly resulted in my milling about for a couple of hours before getting bored and uninstalling yet again. Maybe if I ignored the world entirely and focused purely on constant activity, I could get into it. Fortunately, RIFT's Instant Adventure system offers just what I need to test that theory.

      The original Dream Team
While playing our favorite MMOs, we rarely sit down to think about the people who poured their blood, sweat, and tears into granting us these gaming experiences. Well, at least until we come across something we don't like. Then the blame game begins. But the truth is, it usually takes a large team to assemble a proper MMO, and no one or two people should be held accountable. Well, unless you're literally making an MMO entirely by yourself.

So I asked the Massively team members whom they would have on their MMO dream team. Would they pick out talented individuals or talented groups of designers? Check out the complete list just after the jump.

        I loathe Reddit.

I won't go into the hows and whys because that's better saved for a Soapbox, but suffice it to say that I roll my eyes when game companies including SOE, ArenaNet, and countless others take to the service to communicate with their fanbases instead of using their own forums or Twitter accounts.

I understand why they do it -- salesmen always need to speak to a larger audience, of course -- but it still rankles. What about you, Massively readers? Am I alone here or do you also get annoyed having to go through a third-party community to learn about your game of choice?

The first Pathfinder dev blog of 2014 concerns itself with points of interest and outposts. In a broader sense, GoblinWorks uses the piece to speak about one of the primary design objectives for its fantasy sandbox.

That objective is socialization. Or, as GoblinWorks says, "one of our core philosophies is to maximize meaningful human interaction." A major example of said philosophy is the firm's plan to create "a hierarchy of social structures so that many people have a chance to try their hand at leadership and management." This hierarchy starts with outposts, which are the "heart of the in-game economy" and connected to the aforemention POIs.

A Mild-Mannered Reporter: 2013 in review for superheroes

Gliding along like it was just another day.
2013 was the first year in which City of Heroes didn't exist. The masses of hero fans cried out in anticipation of a new game but found nothing. All there was to be found was a deafening silence and three other games that scratched similar itches but didn't quite manage to hit the same heights.

But we've talked about that as much as it can be discussed, and quite frankly I'm more interested in the now. We've got three titles that are still duking it out, trying to find their voices, and so forth. And then we have the header of Plan Z, which covers several different projects but at the same time serves as an interesting look at the community as a whole.

So in the wake of a quiet December, let's look back at 2013 for the major titles and for the hopefuls. It was a year in which quite a bit happened, not all of it good, but it was still one that might have a big impact on the future of the superhero MMO field.

The package contains a metronome with an inscription that reads as follows:

              Thump, Thump. Time to jump.
Wipe all resistance from your mind
There's a secret deep below to find
If you'd only seen the things I've seen
You'd wake up screaming from The Dream
This next part will sting, but it brings me joy
Sometimes to change you must destroy
A fire is rising you cannot contain

War of Omens, a deck-building CCG by Fifth Column Games, is making an attempt to meet its Kickstarter funding goal by January 13th.

The game is set in a dark fantasy world and has three factions to which you can pledge loyalty and undying devotion. The devs describe War of Omens a hybrid between deck-building games like Dominion and traditional collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering. Players will purchase cards during play that will then be shuffled into their inventory for future rotation. There are also resources to collect and use during the course of a match.

Fifth Column is asking for $30,000 in funding to finish the title. As added incentive to donate, all those who chip in $10 or more will be given an early access beta key. You can get a look at how a battle works after the break.

I really, really enjoy the game; I love the fact that I can do almost anything I want even within a short play session and feel as if I accomplished something. Of course, the current enlightened state I am in does not reflect the game's non-newbie-friendly designs. As a matter of fact, the only place I was able to turn for reliable explanations and non-stop answers was a reader of Massively who recognized my name in the chat.

This reader and I have played together several times, and he went out of his way to answer all of the newbie questions that should have been answered by the game. I know that the developers have said (through Tweets to me and in other places) that a better newbie experience is on its way. There are also friendly little helper robots sprinkled throughout the game and a handful of helpful videos that can be found as well.

So why are so many new players still confused about Firefall?

The Elder Scrolls Online's subscription-only business model has had an unlikely ally step up to defend it: Goblinworks CEO Ryan Dancey.

The Pathfinder Online head chief claimed that subscriptions were still responsible for upward of an estimated $100 million a month in revenues in the Western market with a much smaller amount being gained by cash shops. "It's even harder to estimate how much revenue is being generated from microtransactions but it is extremely difficult to imagine that the revenue even approaches 50% of the amount being paid as subscription fees," he wrote.

Dancey also commented that initial box sales will be incredibly important for ZeniMax: "This may be the internal justification ZeniMax is using to benchmark its budget for Elder Scrolls Online. Skyrim, the most recent single-player entry in the Elder Scrolls franchise, is reported to have sold approximately seven million units, which we can impute translates to something like $210 million in revenue. If the MMORPG can carry that kind of weight, its budget becomes suddenly very rational."

Incidentally, Dancey said that Pathfinder Online will launch with a subscription-only model as well, although he predicts that will change over time.
