I wouldn’t know where to start in acquiring mind-altering substances on the mean streets of Scotland, but I do know where to get them virtually. I checked Steam’s ‘Upcoming’ tab this morning and spotted SoundSelf: A Technodelic, an experience (notagame) that uses your own voice to loop trippy music and visuals to you. I might have to lock the door to my home office, but I’m going to try this when it comes out.

Intrigued and mildly terrified, I decided to jump straight into that rabbit hole to find out more. That’s how I found myself in a Facebook group chat with no fewer than eight cannibals.
Fallout 76 has more stuff trying to kill you than ever before, with other humans being other players that are more likely to shoot first. Therefore, you’ll need good weapons to defend yourself: Melee weapons, ranged weapons, maybe an explosive or two. Perhaps the only way to get an enemy off your back is to make them eat a Fat Man nuke.

I’ve been fairly critical of Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord. I even went far enough to say I couldn’t yet recommend it outright, but maybe I haven’t made it clear that there are a lot of things about it I love.
I have mentioned this in a supporter post, but House Flipper has become a go-to game in my library for when life just gets too much, like how we all have a library of films to watch when atrociously hungover (mine included Legend and This Is Spinal Tap).
It was a big day for me when I could finally afford a to flip a whole house in House Flipper, that being the titular goal of the game. The awful grey/orange kitchen and living area up top there is my creation, the sort of fun new build advertised for students (except every home in House Flipper is a detached home in a MASSIVE garden).

The US carrier outbreak aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt is now a major military disaster, with nearly 600 confirmed Covid-19 infections among sailors reported as of Tuesday, including one death and at least four hospitalizations.
As the outbreak among the approximately 4,860 crew members grew aboard the Western Pacific deployed ship last month, it was diverted to Guam, it's commander Capt. Brett Crozier fired after speaking out in a leaked letter. The nuclear carrier has essentially had to be evacuated of much of its crew.
Amid the continuing saga there's been little attention paid to the reaction of America's rivals and enemies, who have been watching closely as a multi-billion dollar nuclear carrier has been rendered ineffective by an 'invisible enemy'.

* Russia tested an anti-satellite missile that is capable of destroying satellites in low Earth orbit, U.S. Space Command said on Wednesday. * The Pentagon said it is tracking the test. * "Yet another example that the threats to U.S. and allied space systems are real, serious and growing," Gen. John Raymond, commander of U.S. Space Command, said in a statement.
Russia tested a missile capable of knocking out satellites in orbit, the top U.S. space general said on Wednesday.
The Russian anti-satellite missile (also known as "ASAT") is capable of destroying satellites in low Earth orbit, according to U.S. Space Command, which is tracking the test.
"Yet another example that the threats to U.S. and allied space systems are real, serious and growing," Gen. John Raymond, commander of U.S. Space Command and chief of U.S. Space Force Operations, said in a statement. "This test is further proof of Russia's hypocritical advocacy of outer space arms control proposals designed to restrict the capabilities of the United States while clearly having no intention of halting their counterspace weapons programs."
A U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft was flying in international airspace over the Mediterranean sea Wednesday when it was intercepted by a Russian SU-35, Navy officials said.
The Russian fighter jet reportedly conducted a high-speed inverted maneuver in front of the Poseidon, coming as close as 25 feet from the nose of the U.S. aircraft.
The maneuver "put our pilots and crew at risk," a statement from U.S. 6th Fleet said.
"The crew of the P-8A reported wake turbulence following the interaction. The duration of the intercept was approximately 42 minutes."
WNU Editor: This intercept was done over the Mediterranean Sea, not near the Russian border where these types of intercepts by Russia usually occur. Was the U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft tracking a Russian vessel/sub? I think there is more to this story than what is being reported.

* IRGC navy boats condemned for 'harassing approaches' * US officials say 11 small boats circled six US warships
Iranian navy vessels came within 10 yards of American warships in the Persian Gulf in what the US navy described as a series of "dangerous and harassing approaches".
The close encounters on Wednesday and the aggressive tactics pursued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy, visible from photos and video released by the US Fifth Fleet, represent a blow to the Trump administration's claims to have "restored deterrence" in its relations with Iran.
Coming on the same day that the US navy said that a Russian warplane performed an "unsafe" intercept of one of its surveillance planes over the Mediterranean, the incidents also served as a reminder that the coronavirus pandemic has not ended dangerous military rivalries around the world.
While one of the United States' aircraft carriers, the USS Theodore Roosevelt is dealing with a corona virus outbreak that has now become deadly, one of China's aircraft carriers sailed past Taiwan in a show of force. Though Taiwan scrambled jets to intercept and monitor the sail-by, it was perhaps not the best moment for the U.S. Navy.
China currently has two carriers and a third in the shipyard, with a fourth planned. But what is the Chinese aircraft carrier program like? Here is China's carrier fleet.
China currently has two aircraft carriers, with a third in early construction, and a fourth planned for sometime in the mid 2020 or 2030s. Their first carrier, the Liaoning was commissioned by the PLAN in 2012, though it was first laid down in the early 1990s. It was an unfinished Ukrainian carrier, inherited from the Soviet Union, which was then sold to China.
The Trump administration's allegation is included in an unclassified summary of an annual review of international compliance with arms-control accords
China might be secretly conducting nuclear tests with very low explosive power despite Beijing's assertions that it is strictly adhering to an international accord banning all nuclear tests, according to a new arms-control report to be made public by the State Department.
The coming report doesn't present proof that China is violating its promise to uphold the agreement, but it cites an array of activities that "raise concerns" that Beijing might not be upholding the "zero-yield" nuclear-weapons testing ban.
The concerns stem from the high tempo of activity at China's Lop Nur test site, extensive excavations at the site, and China's purported use of special chambers to contain explosions.
WNU Editor: Not impressed by this report. The U.S. does not provide much evidence to support their claim, and what they do provide has been contradicted by the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization.
* Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said 'this is a time for all of us to be united in our common struggle' over virus * He defended the WHO's handling of the virus outbreak but said it would be reviewed by member states * President Trump said Tuesday he will be freezing all funding from the US to the World Health Organization * He accused the WHO of 'severely mismanaging' the pandemic, singling out the call to oppose travel bans * China said it has 'serious concerns' about the decision, which will 'undermine cooperation against the virus' * US is the single largest contributor to the WHO, accounting for 15 per cent of funds over the last two years
The head of the World Health Organization said today he 'regrets' Donald Trump's decision to suspend US funding for the agency and called for 'solidarity' in tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
The WHO's embattled chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference that 'this is a time for all of us to be united in our common struggle' as he defended the agency's handling of the crisis.
Tedros said the WHO is 'fighting the pandemic with every ounce of our soul and spirit' and will 'continue to do that until the end' - but said its management of the disease would be reviewed by member states 'in due course'.
'We will continue to work with every country and every partner to serve the people of the world with a relentless commitment to science, solutions and solidarity,' he said.
WNU Editor: The reaction to President Trump's decision to cut WHO funding is not a surprise. Everyone is now jumping up and down and condemning the move. And while almost everyone is admitting that there is a problem with the World Health Organization, the consensus is that funding should not be cut in the middle of a pandemic, and that if there is a review of WHO it should only happen after the pandemic has finished. In other-words. Do this review in 2021 or 2022. If this pandemic was not causing the damage that it is right now, I would be laughing. But I am not laughing. I am angry. There will be no review in 2021 or 2022. And what is worse .... it is clear there is no desire within the international community to hold WHO officials accountable for how they failed in this disaster. People like Bill Gates, the UN Secretary General, media pundits, and politicians are yelling out loud on how bad this funding cut is .... I say where were you before this pandemic started. Where was the oversight on what WHO was doing? Where was the accountability? Was there any awareness from today's critics of President Trump on what did they know was happening in the World Health Organization before this pandemic. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donates hundreds of millions of dollars to WHO each year. Did they wonder what their money was being spent on? Did they ever inquire on how competent these people were? Did they feel comfortable that the head of WHO was not a medical doctor but he was put in that position because he had close ties and allegiances to China and despotic African governments? Apparently not.
So this is what I think will happen next. U.S. funding for WHO has been suspended for 60 - 90 days pending a review. But this review is to just buy time, because it is not hard for me to figure out what the U.S. wants. They want WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and his supporters within the organization fired and removed.

South's Democratic party has pursued a policy of engagement and reconciliation with North Korea
South Korea's ruling Democratic Party (DP) and its satellite Civil Together Party (CTP) may have secured a historic majority in this week's legislative elections, a joint exit poll by South Korean broadcasters projected as voting ended on Wednesday evening.
The exit poll by Korea Election Pool (KEP), reported by broadcasters KBS, MBC, SBS, forecasted that the ruling party and the CTP is set to win between 153 and 178 seats in the South's National Assembly out of a total 300 seats.
If confirmed, the results will represent the largest majority for a liberal South Korean political party in 16 years.
The main opposition United Future Party (UFP) and its satellite Future Korea Party (FKP), in turn, is expected to win between 107 to 133 parliamentary seats.
WNU Editor: In times of crisis. And this pandemic is a mother of a crisis. The electorate in democracies do not have a habit of changing governments. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his ruling Democratic Party (DP) have not been popular for the past year. But I am not surprised by the exit polls showing that he is heading for a historic win. The South Korean electorate have been shaken by this pandemic, and they are not even remotely ready to change the government. I predict the same result is going to happen in other countries, the U.S. included.

Top Chinese officials secretly determined they were likely facing a pandemic from a novel coronavirus in mid-January, it has been revealed. Chinese President Xi is pictured talking by video with patients and medics at the Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan, China, on March 1
* Officials held the information of a likely pandemic for almost a week in January * A mass banquet was held in Wuhan and millions began travelling in the six days * More than 3,000 people were believed to be infected during the critical period * President Xi warned the public on the seventh day, Jan. 20, documents revealed * Ex-MI6 chief said China concealed the virus from the West and is 'evading' blame
Chinese leaders covered up their knowledge of a possible coronavirus pandemic for six days after realising the grim situation, it has been revealed.
Beijing's top officials secretly determined that they were likely dealing with a major health crisis on January 14, evidence suggested, but President Xi only warned the public of the emergency on January 20.
Thousands of people were believed to contract the deadly disease during the six days in mid-January when the government kept the information from them.
The news comes as a former head of MI6 said today that Beijing concealed coronavirus from the West and is 'evading' blame for the pandemic.
WNU Editor: It was not a six day delay. Beijing held back everything for 6 weeks .... China's Information about the Virus Wasn't Six Days Late, More Like Six Weeks Late (Jim Geraghty, National Review). The big question that I have which remains unanswered is the following. Did the Chinese leadership, when learning that they had lost control of this epidemic in January, and realizing the destruction that it would bring to its economy and reputation, made the decision to ensure the spread of the disease worldwide so that they would suffer just as much as China. I am asking this question because I am someone who has lived in the Soviet Union, who understands communism and the communist mentality personally, who lived and worked in China in the 1980s, and (more to the point) knows too well on how these people think. This leak of memos from China tells me that there are some in China who are not happy with the leadership, who are deeply worried on what has happened, and they want the world to know (at great risk to themselves) on what China was doing at the start of this pandemic. Here is an easy prediction. Expect more leaks in the future.
This map shows the latest number of coronavirus cases and deaths around the world. The United States now has the world's largest outbreak with more than 600,000 infections
* As of Wednesday morning there have been at least 2,004,670 coronavirus cases * At least 130,680 people have died after being infected, the majority in Europe * The U.S. has the largest outbreak with 600,000 infections and 30,000 deaths
The coronavirus pandemic has now infected more than two million people around the world, the latest figures revealed today.
As of Wednesday morning there have been at least 2,004,670 cases of the disease, according to official sources.
Experts believe that the true figure is much higher, with many people never tested because their symptoms are mild or because of a shortage of medical supplies.
At least 130,680 people have died after catching the virus, more than half of them in Europe.

In the past few days, the United States did a bit of saber-rattling by flying its newest stealth fighter, the F-35, over its Special Operations bases in Syria. This is the American version of daring the bully in the schoolyard to test him one more time. It was probably no coincidence that the F-35 flew near where Russian forces are trying to box in the American Special Operations troops which are only a few kilometers away.
The Special Ops Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in Syria and Iraq took to Twitter (doesn't everyone these days?) and released a few photos showing the F-35 above Syria over the al-Hasakah and Deir Ezzor governorates.
(Bloomberg) -- Saudi Arabia and other Gulf suppliers may have agreed to cut oil production again starting next month, but by all indications the taps are set to remain wide open until then -- swelling stockpiles for at least a few more weeks.
The kingdom's crude exports during the first two weeks of April were around 9.3 million barrels a day, according to tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. That compares with 6.8 million barrels a day during the same period in March.
State-owned oil company Saudi Aramco pledged to boost output to 12.3 million barrels a day in April as it slashed prices in a battle for market share, following the collapse of the three-year old OPEC+ pact last month. As the coronavirus spread across the globe, governments imposed restrictions on movement and demand declined further, as did prices.

NEW DELHI: Former chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian on Wednesday said the GDP numbers being projected by the World Bank and IMF for India are far "too optimistic" and the country would require additional expenditure of Rs 10 lakh crore to bring the coronavirus-hit economy back on track. As per the World Bank's latest assessment, India is expected to grow 1.5 per cent to 2.8 per cent during the current fiscal due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent lockdown. Similarly, the IMF on Tuesday projected a GDP growth of 1.9 per cent for India in 2020, as the global economy hits the worst recession since the Great Depression in the 1930s. With these subdued projections, India is likely to record its worst growth performance since the 1991 liberalisation of the economy. "The number given by the World Bank and IMF in terms of the changes are way too optimistic because even if we lose one month's output, we are talking about pretty negative rate of growth and that is what should determine how we respond," Subramanian said in a webinar organised by economic think-tank NCAER. "We are going to experience a sharp collapse in output for one month. We have to spend 2 per cent on medical side which is slightly underestimated... For one month output loss even if we make up one third of output loss by social cushioning or propping up financial system, still it would be 3 per cent of GDP. So the number we came up with Rs 10 lakh crore (Centre and states combined) or 5 per cent of the GDP," he said. Because the economy is going to slow down, revenue collection for this year would be much less than the last year, he said, adding the revenue loss would be 1.5 per cent of the GDP. Subramanian recommended five ways of financing additional expenditure over a period of one year, including cutting expenditure and borrowing directly from the RBI or monetizing debt. He said Rs 1-1.5 lakh crore could be mobilised by cutting expenditure, while another Rs 1-1.5 lakh crore could be raised from multilateral institutions and NRIs. RBI could print about Rs 1.5-2 lakh crore and borrowing through issuance of bonds could be in the range of Rs 4-5 lakh crore, he said. He also pitched for setting up a 'Solidarity Fund' where the 'haves' will pool in money for supporting the 'have-nots'. This could garner about Rs 1 lakh crore. "The government should consider a Solidarity Fund with a one-time annual contribution coming from the wealthy and the employees in the organised sector. "This contribution can take the form of taxes or elimination of middle-class subsidies identified in the Economic Survey of 2016. The wealthy could contribute via a wealth tax with thresholds set by property values say above Rs 5 crore," he said. Salaried employees in the public and private sectors could contribute via a small, progressive tax on salaries and pensions, he said, adding middle class subsidies that could be eliminated include interest and tax deductions for small savers, favourable taxation of gold and other luxuries. Wealth taxes and elimination of subsidies for the rich should in any event be part of the long-run reform agenda to reduce growing inequality, he said. He also said that the government should relax the borrowing norms for the states as this is an extraordinary situation which calls for extraordinary responses. DP ABM ABM
Mumbai: HDFC Bank has identified three contenders to succeed CEO Aditya Puri, two people aware of the matter said. They include Sashidhar (Sashi) Jagdishan and Kaizad Bharucha, both executive directors of the bank, and Sunil Garg, global CEO of Citi Commercial Bank. The candidatures will be discussed at a board meeting on April 18, said one of the persons cited above."The nomination and recruitment committee (NRC) of the board has already shortlisted these three names with the help of global executive search firm Egon Zehnder and this will be placed before the board this week," the person said. "The plan is to send the recommendations to the RBI before April end."In response to ET's query, HDFC Bank said it doesn't comment on market rumours as a matter of policy.Email sent to Sunil Garg did not elicit a response. Puri, 69, is credited with building the bank from scratch since its 1994 inception and turning it into a financial giant with a balance sheet size of nearly ₹14 lakh crore. His term will end in October 2020.The bank constituted a six-member search committee last year to find a replacement and appointed Egon Zehnder to assist in the hunt. Puri, who has more than 40 years of experience in the banking sector, is an advisor to the search committee.'Recommendations with Search Panel'Puri said on a recent media call that an announcement on his successor is likely to be made soon."The recommendations are with the search committee and before April an appropriate person who will take the bank to the future will be announced," he had said. There has been speculation over whether his successor will be from within the bank or outside. In an interview with ET in February, Puri said that the board acknowledges the contributions of insiders to the evolution of the bank."I believe that this theory (of favouring insiders) has a lot of merit," said Puri. "Obviously, we know whoever is within the organisation. If a lot of them have created a $100 billion franchise, they must be competent. The board also acknowledges that we have very strong internal candidates. But there were some people who felt that we should also look at external candidates so that we won't miss out on anyone." The bank reshuffled top management roles and named Jagdishan as a "change agent" in August last year, making him head of all important portfolios at the bank. This was seen as a signal that he might be Puri's successor if the board chose an internal candidate. Kaizad Bharucha, another HDFC Bank veteran, heads the wholesale banking portfolio for the lender. The lender's board had recently cleared Jagdishan and Bharucha as executive directors. However, earlier this month, the RBI directed HDFC Bank to keep the appointments in abeyance, saying that the choice of candidates should be left to the incoming chief executive. Garg is a veteran Citibanker and is responsible for its commercial banking business, which has about 50,000 clients in 24 countries. The regulator recently revised its guidelines on how recommendations for private sector bank heads are made. As per the new rules, proposals for the appointment of managing directors and CEOs of banks should include a panel of at least two persons in the order of preference and should be submitted at least four months before the expiry of the term of office of the incumbent.
NEW DELHI: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to finalise the stimulus and support measures to counter the severe economic impact of Covid-19."If the package is finalised, it could be unveiled soon after," a government official said on condition of anonymity. The upcoming package is likely to focus on the MSME sector, which has been the worst hit, and could include an over Rs 15,000 crore credit guarantee fund, another government official said. This is expected to be the first of a series of measures spanning other sectors of the economy as the situation on the ground unfolds after economic activity is opened up.On Wednesday, the government permitted many industrial and economic activities to resume operations in districts identified as green zones from April 20. Sitharaman had already announced a Rs 1.7 lakh crore relief package that includes direct cash transfers to the poor and free ration, among other measures. She had also announced relaxations in mandatory compliances for businesses and individuals. The finance ministry held several rounds of discussions with various ministries and departments on issues faced by sectors administered by them as also industry.Upcoming measures would be based on inputs provided by them and a task force set up by the prime minister.Service sectors such as hospitality & tourism, aviation and exports including textiles and gems & jewellery are in focus for some relief.Industry has sought a stimulus package of up to 3-5% of India's GDP to revive the economy that is likely to see its worst slowdown, as per various forecasts. 75168556One percent of GDP translates into roughly Rs 2 lakh crore. The International Monetary Fund has slashed India's growth estimate for FY21 to 1.9% from 5.8% estimated in January. According to some estimates, the lockdown could cost the economy Rs 6-10 lakh crore in lost output.Retail, discretionary consumption, travel and tourism, hospitality, construction and transport are among the worst affected. With the lockdown extended to 40 days in total, more sectors are feeling the pain. Only sectors dealing with essentials such as FMCG and healthcare have some support.
New Delhi: The Indian government held high-level meetings to set in motion a strategy to wean away manufacturing from China and fast-tracking efforts by tapping into palpable global anger against the Far East nation amid the Covid-19 outbreak, officials familiar with the matter said."Countries such as Japan are already looking to diversify their manufacturing and supply chains to newer destinations…the government is working to address disabilities across sectors, including for pharmaceuticals and automobiles, to try and establish India as an alternate to China for manufacturing for local and global markets across sectors," one of the officials privy to the matter, told ET. The idea is to spur employment, revenue and earn forex by making India an export hub.Last week, the Japanese government announced that it has earmarked $2.2 billion of its record economic stimulus package to help its manufacturers shift production out of China as the coronavirus disrupts supply chains between the major trading partners. The government is aware that almost all countries, including the US, have received a "massive jolt" with the outbreak of Covid-19 and realise they need to diversify risk in their production lines."India is at a very sweet spot and the Indian government wants to 'tap' into this potential," another official said. India had kick started such efforts, but has so far been focused on electronics manufacturing. The government last month notified three schemes with incentives totalling ₹48,000 crore to boost mobile phone manufacturing in the country and the dominant production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme has the lion's share of close to ₹41,000 crore with sops to be spread over three years. The aim is to attract top smartphone players like Apple, Samsung, Oppo and Vivo to set up their entire value chain in India, and make the country their export hub.

NEW DELHI: India continues to see a shortfall in the availability of personal protection equipment (PPE) for healthcare even as the government significantly ramps up domestic production and some kits from China failed quality tests. Many kits made in China, the world's main supplier, that were donated to the Indian government, were found unusable because they failed safety checks, a person aware of the matter told ET. Of 170,000 PPE kits that arrived in India on April 5, about 50,000 failed quality tests."Two small consignments with 30,000 and 10,000 PPE kits, too, failed tests," the person said. 75171809The kits were tested at the Defence Research & Development Organisation laboratory in Gwalior. While government officials said they are procuring CE/FDAcertified PPE kits only, some consignments received as donations failed the quality tests and cannot be used. "Kits that are not FDA/ CE-approved have to pass quality tests in India," the person said.Consignments that failed the quality tests are those received as donations from big private companies in India, the person said, without identifying the donors. To meet the shortfall, an order for an additional 1 million suits has been placed through traders, including a Singaporean company, people with knowledge of the plan said. However, all suits will be sourced from China only."By the end of May first week, we should have these suits. More orders are being placed," they said. The government estimates India will be in a comfortable position if it had 2 million PPE suits. Government officials said there is no need to panic."The number of orders being placed is growing. China is the major supplier. We were totally dependent on imports earlier and never expected that there would be a surge in demand," a senior government official said, adding that domestic manufacturing is ramping up, too."Domestic PPE production has increased to 30,000 kits a day, hitting the target a week earlier than scheduled, and is expected to touch 50,000 by the end of the month. Cumulatively, we have produced over 150,000 suits and should be able to manufacture an additional 100,000 by the weekend," the people said.India has been procuring additional machines needed to manufacture the suits. "Another 30 hot air seam sealing machines will soon be sourced," an official said, Meanwhile, PTI reported on Wednesday that China has asked all the countries to import these items through reputed Chinese firms cleared by the government and vowed to punish those involved in counterfeit behaviour.
In the previous market note, it was mentioned the importance of the 9,050-9,100 zone, and the kind of resistance that it can give to NSE Nifty. Indian equity market enjoyed a strong start to the trade, as it opened after a day's gap on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Dalal Street failed to capitalise on the strong opening, and from the high point of the day, the headline index fell nearly 400 points. It finally ended with a loss of 68.55 points or 0.76 per cent at 8,925.30.With Nifty failing to keep its head above 9,050-9,100, this zone has reinforced itself as a strong resistance area. The index moving past this zone will continue to remain crucially important if the market has to see any kind of upmove. Until this happens, the index will be vulnerable at higher levels.Thursday's session is expected to see a soft start, with 9,000 and 9,070 levels acting as the resistance. Support may come in at 8,830 and 8,775.The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the daily chart was at 45.54 and stayed neutral, showing no any divergence against the price. The indicator is seen resisting a trend line that joined its lower tops formed over the past couple of days. 75165962The daily MACD was bullish and traded above its signal line. An engulfing bearish pattern was formed on the charts. The emergence of this pattern near 9,050-9,100 reinforces the credibility of this area as a strong resistance zone. With Nifty failing to move past the 9050-9100 zone, the index will continue to remain vulnerable at higher levels. The weekly options expiry will also dominate the trade as 9,000 has the maximum concentration of Call open interest, which can act as a resistance unless a tactical shift occurs. We would advise traders to continue to avoid fresh long positions unless the index moves past the important resistance levels. A cautious view is advised for the day.(Milan Vaishnav, CMT, MSTA, is a Consulting Technical Analyst and founder of Gemstone Equity Research & Advisory Services, Vadodara. MUMBAI: The lockdown deadlock, complexities of the loan moratorium and an uncertain future are making routine jobs like forecasting earnings a challenge for bank equity analysts."Forecasting is difficult in the fourth quarter of FY20 and more so because of the uncertainties of the first quarter next year. It is particularly difficult to measure the impact on NBFCs, which typically have well-matched assets and liabilities and for whom there are problems both in terms of collections as well as in terms of moratorium on borrowings," said Lalitabh Srivastawa, analyst at Sharekhan, a part of the BNP Paribas Group. So far, only HDFC Bank has annouced April 18 as the date for results. Other banks and NBFCs grapple with collating data and getting numbers audited in an extraordinary situation. The cascading impact of the lockdown could not have come at a worse time as overall banking credit growth is near 58-year lows at 6%. Analysts are predicting demand destruction will likely lead to a fall in credit, especially in segments like retail and SME. Retail focussed private sector banks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank could face the heat."Our discussions with bankers suggest that cards/personal loan growth has already come-off, while a recovery in vehicle finance will be delayed, and mortgage growth too will be hit due to the lockdown. Retail private banks have for long reported strong financial performance led by healthy credit growth/NIMs and moderate loan loss provision feeding on strong consumption, captive customers and better analytics," said Emkay Financial Services in a preview."However, we believe that the rising risk of an economic recession in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak is likely to pause, if not stop, this cycle. We expect private banks to report a 3% earnings decline in Q4, mainly dragged by Yes/RBL/IndusInd," the preview added. Emkay has already cut its fiscal 2021 earnings estimate for private banks by around 20 to 40%.Analysts said sectors like auto and ancillaries, logistics, aviation and hotels will be the most severely hit."The large companies may still be able to pay, but what happens to the smaller guys? Then there are questions on whether retail borrowers and SMEs will be able to pay the bunched up interest on the moratorium after three months. NBFCs are definitely going to suffer because not all of them will have the resources to repay their debt, and the situation is such that cost of funds will definitely increase," said Siddharth Purohit, analyst at SMC Global Securities.Analysts said the extention of the lockdown to the end of the month has most likely put the first quarter to jeapordy for both banks and NBFCs. The impact of this could also be felt for the whole of the first half of fiscal 2021.Some banks, like IndusInd and RBL, are also facing pressure on the liabilities side due to a flight of deposits in March. The asset side challenges will compound their problems."Among banks, we selectively prefer banks with healthy capital position, retail liability franchise and reasonable core earnings to absorb asset quality shocks (ICICI, HDFC Bank, SBI and City Union Bank). Within NBFCs, we prefer housing finance companies over asset finance companies due to long-tenor asset maturity, secured exposure and lower dependence on cash/physical collections," Emkay said
New Delhi | Bengaluru: Handset and component manufactures say they are allowed to restart production from April 20 but are unsure if they will do so and at what capacity, given the labour supply issues, existing excess stock in the retail channels and weak demand with offline retail still shut.Market watchers say handset companies may start with just 15-20% of their capacity, if at all."Manufacturing of all types can restart in rural areas and manufacturing of IT hardware, which include mobile devices including components, within municipalities can also be restarted from April 20," Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), told ET.As per government data, India has around 270 factories making handsets and components."Servicing of IT products has been permitted largely by self-employed, which will cover probably 90% of the universe," Mohindroo said. ICEA represents handset brands like Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Lava, besides world's leading contract manufacturers including Foxconn and Wistron.75166853A spokesperson for China's Xiaomi, India's top handset brand which makes its phones primarily through Foxconn, said that it is evaluating all possibilities. Executives at major Chinese smartphone makers Oppo and Vivo said that they were in touch with authorities on future steps. Analysts said that handset makers will certainly find it difficult to start their factories with migrant workers likely to be slow in returning to their jobs, especially in northern India, which houses factories of Oppo, Vivo and Samsung. Oppo, Vivo and Samsung did not respond to ET queries."As per our estimates, handset players will only start with 15-20% capacity, but they need to resolve the sales challenge since offline is 60% of the market and there is zero sales due to the lockdown," Tarun Pathak, associate director at Counterpoint Research, said.
By Enda CurranThe lockdown gripping much of the world economy has spurred a real-time stress test of the long-heralded digital future.Virtual brown bag lunches have replaced office gatherings; schools have rushed out internet-based learning; the International Monetary Fund will this week hold its Spring meetings online; and the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time will hear arguments by telephone and allow live audio broadcasts.Virus lockdowns have seen millions lose their jobs as waiters, flight attendants, Pilates instructors and other service providers are shuttered. That means sustaining those sectors that can function online has never been more important for a global economy facing one of its darkest periods since the Great Depression.Guaging the exact size of the digital economy isn't easy: The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development estimates a range of 4.5% to 15.5% of global gross domestic product. While that varies by country, it's clear the companies and nations which can migrate the most commerce online will go some way to cushioning the damage."The futurists are going to have a field day," said Mark Herlach an international lawyer at Eversheds Sutherland LLP in Washington D.C. "It will change the way we build our cities, the way we move around in those cities and that in turn changes our energy use. A whole series of knock on effects are coming." 75155728Herlach -- who has had to steer negotiations between clients and government from his home and has used video happy hours and dinner parties to stay in touch with colleagues and friends -- is positive on the experience so far, but worries about a lingering sense of isolation if more opt to work remotely once the lockdowns ease.Cheaper internet connectivity has enabled explosive growth in online tools, allowing many white collar roles to be done at home and keeping managers and business owners in touch with their staff.Users of Microsoft Teams soared to a new daily record of 2.7 billion meeting minutes in one day, a 200% increase from 900 million on March 16, the company said on April 9. Even amid security concerns, Zoom has gone from being used by 10 million office workers a day to more than 200 million people."'Zooming' has become a new verb," said Michael Bowes, a barrister and joint head of Outer Temple Chambers in London. He and his colleagues hold a 'Virtual Tea Zoom Group' at 4pm every Wednesday, where everyone brings their own tea and cake for a general chat about non-work issues.Already, some companies have an eye on how they'll change operations even when the virus dissipates. Some are looking at cutting expensive travel and real estate budgets in favor of investing in better technology and home office set ups, said Satish Shankar, regional managing partner of Bain & Company Asia-Pacific. 75155742"We are poised for a dramatic wanton increase of the digitalization of our economies," he said.Viewed through metrics such as online government services, fiber internet connection and the share of people who already work from home, Scandinavian nations score highly in terms of online readiness. In tech rich economies such as Japan and South Korea, the sectors most impacted can't readily switch to a remote stance, according to London based HSBC economist James Pomeroy.Ed Yardeni, who coined the term "bond vigilantes" in the 1980s, dedicated a recent research note to clients on how he has adjusted to a world of meetings and cocktails over video link during what he calls the great virus crisis, or GVC."Technology has become a GVC staple, right up there with food and toilet paper," wrote the president and chief investment strategist of Yardeni Research Inc.Perhaps no sector has been as upended as education, with school closures affecting 90% of the world's students, or more than 1.5 billion people according to UNESCO. That has forced teachers to scramble online courses with little warning, with knock on consequences for the wider economy as parents are forced to adapt their working schedule around their children's needs.Exam timetables have been threatened as authorities grapple with canceling or postponing critical final year exams, or basing grades on past performance.Wong Mo Yee, a primary school teacher and a member of the Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union executive committee where schools have been shut for months, said the crisis highlighted the need for clear goals about what should be taught at home instead of rigidly sticking with the in-class room curriculum. She also flagged dangers of too much screen time."Home learning is completely different, the interaction is different, the dynamic in the so-called video classes is also different," Wong said. "It's not so easy to engage students in video teaching."Poorer children have been hardest hit, where families either have to share devices or don't have them at all. Families where parents have to leave home for work and cannot supervise their child's learning have had it tougher still."The longer children are out of school and not learning, the increased likelihood they will never return to school," said Heather Simpson, chief program officer of Room to Read.Tech LimitsManufacturers have also discovered the limitations of tech. One of them is Colin Ng, who is co-founder of Hong Kong-based Lincogn Technology Co. that designs and makes smart home appliances such as facial recognition door locks and mobile phone controlled lights for the Hong Kong, China, U.S. and European markets.Travel restrictions on the border between Hong Kong and mainland China have disrupted the main artery between Ng's small R&D team in Hong Kong and the company's manufacturing staff in neighboring Guangdong. That's complicated the process for when a product is meant to move from the R&D laboratory to the factory floor."Video conferencing the discussion is very difficult," Ng said. "It is difficult to explain a lot of the detail through the camera, the conversation becomes very inefficient."Joerg Wuttke, president of the European Chamber of Commerce in China and a veteran of doing business in the world's second-biggest economy, said remote working can only do so much for those in due diligence, sales or manufacturing."Companies are pushing the envelope," Wuttke said. "But at the end of the day someone still has to get the coal and oil out of the ground and put solar panels together."There have been other strains too.Surging web usage prompted President Donald Trump to hold talks with telecom giants to ensure the networks could cope. In Europe, Amazon.com Inc., Netflix Inc. and YouTube had to reduce the quality of their video streams to ensure networks can handle increased usage. In China, mobile broadband downloading speed slumped between mid-January and early February before gradually recovering by mid-March, according to network speed testing platform Ookla. Downloading speed in India and Malaysia has started to dip since early March as the pandemic outbreak spread. The shift online has been a crucial safety net for a collapsing world economy and will change how we study, work and play even when the virus passes, said Chua Hak Bin, senior economist at Maybank Kim Eng Research Pte. in Singapore."Quarantines and lockdowns for such long periods would have been near impossible to impose and bear without the tech devices available today," he said.--With assistance from Shirley Zhao and Zoe Schneeweiss.
