Air Force Gen. Tod D. Wolters, left, the U.S. European Command's top general, said schools, fitness centers, chapels and other meeting places on U.S. installation at Vincenza, Italy, are closed until Wednesday and there is a 50 percent chance that those areas would remain closed beyond the middle of the week. Top commander in Europe says a 'fair amount' of US troops in Italy are staying home to avoid the virus.
The spread of the coronavirus in Europe is affecting operations and services on some U.S. military bases in Italy, and precautions could soon extend to the thousands of personnel stationed in Germany, the general in charge of the military's activity on that continent told senators on Tuesday.
Air Force Gen. Tod D. Wolters, who leads U.S. European Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that a "fair amount" of the military's 35,000 soldiers in Italy are staying home to avoid the virus. The disease was first detected in China, and the World Health Organization in January said the outbreak is a "public health emergency of international concern."
There are almost 300 confirmed coronavirus cases in Italy, where seven people have died from the illness. The outbreak in Italy, so far, has been most prevalent in the Lombardy region, in the country's northwest. But there are also confirmed cases in Veneto, the northeastern region that is home to the U.S. Army Garrison Italy in the town of Vicenza and close to Aviano Air Force base.
A U.S. soldier stationed in South Korea has tested positive for the coronavirus and is in self-quarantine at his residence off base, the military said Tuesday.
The 23-year-old is based at Camp Carroll near the city of Daegu, where most of the country's coronavirus cases have been clustered, and he visited Camp Walker earlier this week. He is the first U.S. service member to become infected.
Health professionals are trying to determine whether or not others have been exposed to COVID-19, U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) said in a statement.
"USFK is implementing all appropriate control measures to help control the spread of COVID-19 and remains at risk level 'high' for USFK peninsula-wide as a prudent measure to protect the force," the command said.
The exercise will involve SpaceX Starlink satellites, a variety of military assets, and a new command and control system working together.
As space continues to play an increasingly important role for the United States armed forces, the Department of Defense has been also increasingly engaging with the private aerospace and communications sector to develop and implement solutions that better help it confront emerging warfighting challenges. Just last week, Air Force acquisition chief William Roper told reporters at the Pentagon that the Air Force and SpaceX will conduct an event on April 8, together with other branches of the U.S. military, that will see SpaceX Starlink satellites link up with multiple armed forces systems in a "massive" live fire exercise.
"SpaceX has been a great industry partner for us," Roper said. "They are very excited and we are excited to learn more about their satellites through the demonstration."
East Africa is facing major threat from #DesertLocusts. A locust outbreak that has devastated parts of East Africa and overwhelmed local officials has reached the Congo, according to the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization.
The desert locusts, carried in part by the wind, arrived on the western shore of Lake Albert on Friday, marking the first time the voracious insects have been seen in the Central African country since 1944.
The worst outbreak that parts of East Africa have seen in 70 years also recently reached South Sudan, a country already devastated by food shortages and years of civil war.
Kenya, Somalia and Uganda also have been battling the locust swarms, which can reach the size of major cities.
(CNN)The coronavirus that emerged from Wuhan, China, last year is causing alarm across the world, with fear that this could become the next pandemic. Late last month, the World Health Organization declared the virus, named COVID-19, a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" and urged an immediate international response.
It advised its member states to put in place national preparedness plans and procedures for identifying and responding to any COVID-19 cases that might present. The death toll of more than 2,600 people far exceeds that of the SARS outbreak nearly 17 years ago.
This outbreak is terrifying for the tens of millions of people impacted in Wuhan and in countries around the world, and it arguably could not come at a worse time for Americans.
There's a famous adage in public health: "Outbreaks are inevitable; epidemics are not."
#UPDATE Four more people have died in some of the worst sectarian violence in decades in New Delhi, raising the death toll from several days of rioting to 17.

Not long after CDC officials urged Americans to prepare for coronavirus outbreaks that will almost certainly begin to spread nationwide, Mayor London Breed declared a state of emergency for the city of San Francisco.
"The global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step-up preparedness," Breed said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.
While there are currently no cases of coronavirus in the city, the recent declaration will allow the city to secure funding, mobilize additional city resources and expedite the process of emergency planning.
"Given the high volume of travel between S.F. and mainland China, it is likely we will see one or more cases eventually. If a San Francisco case is confirmed, the Health Department will make an announcement," said Breed.
The South Carolina presidential Democratic debate quickly devolved into a scrappy schoolyard screaming match on Tuesday night — all of the candidates furiously talking over each other as the CBS moderators seemed helpless to do anything about it.
CBS News moderators Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell struggled to keep the unruly seven candidates in line as they rushed to attack Bernie Sanders who they now realize is on an unstoppable march to the nomination.
At one point, all of the candidates were wildly flapping their hands and yelling over each other before former veep Joe Biden chastised their on-stage decorum.
* Dick Pound estimated a three-month window to decide the fate of the Games * About 11,000 athletes are preparing to take part in the Games, to open July 24 * Pound said moving to another city seems unlikely because of short time frame
A senior member of the International Olympic Committee said Tuesday that if it proves too dangerous to hold the Olympics in Tokyo this summer because of the coronavirus outbreak, organizers are more likely to cancel it altogether than to postpone or move it.
Dick Pound, a former Canadian swimming champion who has been on the IOC since 1978, making him its longest-serving member, estimated there is a two-month window to decide the fate of the Tokyo Olympics, meaning a decision could be put off until late May.
He said: 'In and around that time, I'd say folks are going to have to ask: "Is this under sufficient control that we can be confident about going to Tokyo or not?".'
As the games draw near, he said, 'a lot of things have to start happening.
More than a dozen people have been killed and hundreds injured in violent protests over a new citizenship law in India's capital New Delhi.
The clashes were the worst in the capital since unrest over the new law began in December.
An official at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in New Delhi said 13 people had died there and more than 150 injured people, many of them with bullet wounds, had been treated.
India's capital has been a focus of unrest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which makes it easier for non-Muslims from three neighbouring Muslim-dominated countries to gain Indian citizenship.
Dow Jones lost 877 or 3.1%, the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 2.7% and the S&P 500 fell 3% following similar losses across the Atlantic
Investors sold off shares across the world for a second day on Tuesday as fears of the economic impact of the coronavirus continued to grow.
In New York the major markets experienced their biggest drop in two years amid fears that the growing virus outbreak will put the brakes on the global economy and more companies warned the outbreak will hurt their finances.
The Dow Jones lost 877 or 3.1%, the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 2.7% and the S&P 500 fell 3% following similar losses across the Atlantic.
In London the FTSE 100 index closed at its lowest level in a year, down 1.9% at 7,018, lowering the value of Britain's blue-chip companies by about £35bn and contributing to a two-day loss of nearly £100bn. Germany's Dax fell 1.8% and in France the CAC fell 1.94%.
China's massive travel restrictions, house-to-house checks, huge isolation wards and lockdowns of entire cities bought the world valuable time to prepare for the global spread of the new virus.
But with troubling outbreaks now emerging in Italy, South Korea and Iran, and U.S. health officials warning Tuesday it's inevitable it will spread more widely in America, the question is: Did the world use that time wisely and is it ready for a potential pandemic?
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that the US will sign a troop reduction deal in Afghanistan if the current "reduction in violence" is successful. "All sides are tired of fighting," he told reporters.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday that the US will sign a troop reduction deal in Afghanistan with the Taliban, if the current weeklong reduction in violence is successful.
"If — and only if — it's successful, we will sign the US-Taliban agreement," he told reporters. The agreement would include negotiations around the withdrawal of thousands of US troops from the country for the first time in 18 years.
* Senior CDC official Nancy Messonier said coronavirus is moving closer to meeting the criteria of a pandemic * She says she that it's not a question of if, but when, spread will occur in the US * Dr Messonier said she called her children's school and asked if there are plans for tele-schooling if necessary and recommended parents do the same * More than 80,000 people have been infected worldwide and more than 2,700 people have died
It's no longer 'a question of if...but when' the coronavirus will spread in the US, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials said on Tuesday as they told parents to prepare their children for the possibility of school closures.
The CDC said Americans may need to prepare for 'tele-schooling' should the virus continue to spread throughout the US.
So far, 57 cases have been confirmed - 14 in the nation, 40 from citizens repatriated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan and three evacuated from China.
And although the threat is currently low, Dr Nancy Messonier, CDC's director of the Center for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, says the public needs to be ready if the virus becomes a pandemic.
'It's not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country any more but a question of when this will happen,' she told reporters in a media call on Tuesday.
'We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad.'
A weekend outbreak of coronavirus in northern Italy has now seen cases spread across the country - including to Palermo in Sicily - and jump the border to Austria, Croatia, mainland Spain and Switzerland
* Italy confirmed four more deaths from coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 11 * Four new deaths were announced in Vento and Lombardy - two men and two women, the youngest was 76 * Meanwhile the number of cases in the south climbed to three, all of them in the Sicilian capital of Palermo * All three infected travelled to the south from the north before a lock-down was put into place last week * Italy confirmed 95 new cases bringing the total to 322 as virus jumped to Austria, Croatia and Switzerland
Four more people have died from coronavirus in Italy, bringing the total number of fatalities to 11 as 322 cases were confirmed across the country.
The total number of cases in Italy rose to 322 from 229 on Monday, with the vast majority from Lombardy and Veneto, the economic powerhouse of the country that include the financial capital Milan and the tourist hotspot Venice.
Four new deaths were announced in the two regions - two men, aged 91 and 81, and two women, aged 83 and 76. All the others who have died since the flare-up came to light on Friday were also elderly and suffering from underlying health problems.
Three new cases were confirmed in Sicily and two in Tuscany as the contagion spread south. All three Sicilian cases are concentrated in the regional capitol of Palermo, having travelled to the region as part of a 29-strong group including a 66-year-old woman who was the south's first confirmed case.
* Iran's deputy health minister Iraj Harirchi was placed into quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus * Comes a day after he sweated his way through a press conference while insisting outbreak is under control * Iran has officially declared 95 cases and 15 deaths, but there are fears that the true number is much higher * Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Iran to 'tell the truth' and cooperate with health officials over the virus
Iran's deputy health minister has tested positive for coronavirus amid a rapidly worsening outbreak in the Islamic republic today.
Iraj Harirchi was taken into quarantine just a day after sweating heavily at a press conference where he insisted that the outbreak was not as bad as feared.
The virus's spread into the health ministry is the latest sign of Tehran's faltering efforts to contain the outbreak.
The regime has refused to seal off the holy city of Qom at the centre of the crisis even as pilgrims spread the virus around the Middle East and Iranians face shortages of masks and testing kits.
* Local official says death toll stands at 50, raising concerns of a cover-up and whether the country will be able to cope with the crisis * Calls for US to ease restrictions to allow China and other Tehran-friendly countries to provide emergency aid
As coronavirus cases and deaths spike in Iran, experts have warned the outbreak in the Islamic Republic could be far worse than officially reported, and emergency aid will be needed to help the sanctions-hit country avoid a humanitarian crisis. Fifty people have died from the new coronavirus in the Shiite Muslim holy city of Qom this month, a local official was quoted as saying by Iran's semi-official ILNA news agency on Monday.
The new figure, which has yet to be confirmed by the government, is significantly higher than the official tally, which stands at 12 deaths out of 47 confirmed infections, according to state television.
The United States and South Korea are considering scaling back upcoming joint military exercises due to the coronavirus outbreak in the Korean Peninsula, according to US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.
Esper said the US commander of US forces in Korea, Gen. Robert Abrams, and South Korea's chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Park Han-ki, "are looking at scaling back the command post training due to concerns about the coronavirus."
Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon alongside his South Korean counterpart, Minister of Defense Kyeong-doo Jeong, Esper said he is confident the US and South Korea will "remain fully ready to deal with any threats that we might face together."
SEOUL - South Korean schools closed, and major events — including concerts and the opening of the top Korean football league — were indefinitely postponed Monday, as the country attempted to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Warning of a "grave watershed moment," South Korean President Moon Jae-in has placed South Korea on the highest alert level. The move gives authorities greater latitude to forcibly restrict public gatherings and enforce quarantines on those with the virus.
South Korea reported 231 new infections Monday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 833. Authorities also reported the seventh death from the highly transmissible virus, which causes a disease called Covid-19.
BEIJING: China on Tuesday (Feb 25) reported another 71 deaths from the novel coronavirus, the lowest daily number of fatalities in over two weeks, which raised the toll to 2,663.
The central province of Hubei, the epicenter of the outbreak, reported 68 new deaths, while in the provincial capital of Wuhan, 56 people died.
The National Health Commission also reported 508 new confirmed cases, with all but nine in hard-hit Hubei province.
It is up from Monday's 409 cases nationwide and brings the total number of confirmed cases in mainland China so far to 77,658.
Multiple provinces in China have reported zero new cases for several days in a row now, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) saying Monday that the coronavirus epidemic has "peaked" in China.
DUBAI/BEIJING (Reuters) - Iran's coronavirus death toll rose to 16 on Tuesday, the highest outside China, increasing its international isolation as dozens of countries from South Korea to Italy accelerated emergency measures to curb the epidemic's global spread.
Believed to come from wildlife in Wuhan city late last year, the flu-like disease has infected 80,000 people and killed 2,663 in China. But the World Health Organization (WHO) says the epidemic there has peaked and has been declining since Feb. 2.
Beyond mainland China, however, it has jumped to about 29 countries and territories, with some three dozen deaths, according to a Reuters tally. Growing outbreaks in Iran, Italy and South Korea are of particular concern.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday that a seven-day "reduction in violence" agreement with the Taliban is largely holding.
"So far, the reduction of violence is working," Pompeo told reporters at a briefing. "Imperfect, but it's working."
Pompeo announced last week that the United States and the Taliban would sign a broader peace agreement at the end of February if a weeklong reduction in violence period holds.

In November 2013, the then central bank Governor Raghuram Rajan had warned banks against dressing up loans, likening the practice with "putting lipstick on a pig" (that) "will not make a princess." His stance marked the beginning of the end of forbearance. Rajan's successor Urjit Patel, too, continued with the tradition of nixing proposals that kicked the can down the road. But the new RBI regime under Shaktikanta Das has been different. It has already allowed banks to extend the MSME loan recast scheme and allowed restructuring of loans to the real estate sector."The RBI announcement of forbearance towards stressed sectors signifies a gradual shift away from the regulator's earlier efforts to enhance the quality and transparency of asset classification in the Indian banking system," said Saswata Guha, director, financial institutions, Fitch Ratings. "There is a risk that such regulatory forbearance will perpetuate moral hazard, as it follows aggressive lending growth and risk-taking in certain sectors."Indian banks have a poor track record with restructuring. The RBI's asset quality reviews in FY16 and FY18 found that a dominant share of loans restructured after FY12 degraded into non-performing loans (NPLs), according to a Fitch analysis.BLOW HOT, BLOW COLD"You are encouraging bad behaviour by supporting it and demoralising the ones with good behaviour; this is akin to farm loan waiver that leads to bad credit behaviour," said Kuntal Sur, partner – financial risk & regulation, PwC. "This is nothing but kicking the can down the road, this should not be encouraged."The concept of regulatory forbearance arose when the RBI allowed project loans to retain their standard asset classification on extension of their repayment schedule in May 1999. This was extended to treatment of restructured accounts in March 2001 under the Corporate Debt Restructuring (CDR) mechanism, for restructuring of debt without the need for an asset quality downgrade if the restructuring plan met certain conditions. For years, asset quality forbearance was used more as a tool for avoiding recognition of defaults and less for their effective resolution. In 2008-09, after the global financial crisis, the RBI agreed to forbear on certain kinds of stressed loan restructuring, hoping that this was a temporary need pending stronger growth. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, the stress has not been temporary, and growth in these sectors has proved elusive. This regulatory forbearance was made available to all types of loan restructuring except commercial real estate exposures, capital market exposures and personal and consumer loans.Since 2008, RBI relaxed norms for restructured loans several times and allowed lower provisioning for select categories of loans. Its regulatory relaxations prevented a rise of nearly Rs 90,000 crore in NPAs. These relaxations include allowing unsecured loans to microfinance companies to be restructured in 2011, and allowing second restructuring of loans on a case-to-case basis. State electricity boards and the aviation sector are two notable examples wherein loans were restructured for a second time, but were not classified as non-performing assets. But, in May 2013, the RBI announced the decision to withdraw forbearance on asset classification effective April 1, 2015. Shortly after this, the RBI began its Asset Quality Review (AQR) exercise to determine the "real" stock of the bad loan problem. After the RBI undertook the AQR that led to recognition as NPA of several loans, which banks had then considered to be standard assets, NPAs went up from 4.62% in 2014-15 to 7.79% in 2015-16, and were as high as 10.41% by December 2017.However, in the wake of mounting NPAs, the RBI allowed asset classification benefits for certain types of restructuring schemes. These included Strategic Debt Restructuring (SDR), Flexible Structuring of Project Loans and the Scheme for Sustainable Structuring of Stressed Assets (S4A). 74310653 HARD TIMESA revival in GDP growth rate is key to the Indian economy, which has slowed to an 11-year-low of 4.5% in the September quarter. Bank of America's India Activity Indicator slipped to 3.1% in December from 4.5% in November. The Index of Industrial Production for December shrunk to 0.3% while retail inflation rose to 7.59% in January."It is not surprising in the current weak operating environment and is in line with a recent trend to weaken asset recognition standards," said Guha of Fitch. "These extensions are only likely to defer asset-quality pressures unless there is a sustained improvement in macroeconomic conditions. Most of these sectors have had above-average lending growth in the last few years, either directly or indirectly via non-banks, and could be at risk were the economy to slow. Moreover, these measures are unlikely to support sustainable credit growth until capitalisation improves meaningfully across banks, in particular among state-owned banks, which account for nearly twothirds of the sector's assets."The MSME sector accounts for over 28% of GDP, more than 40% of exports, while employing approximately 110 million people. The outstanding banking sector credit to MSMEs was Rs 15.11 lakh crore while its gross NPAs were 5.8% of the total credit. Likewise, the real estate sector has been in trouble for quite some time and is the primary reason behind the sustained nonbank lending crisis."In extreme situations, the economic value of not taking any action is too high," says Sur. "If you look at the government's perspective, we are in a slow growth phase; if you allow further defaults, the negative impact could bring down the growth further."Some believe that difficult times warrant some degree of forbearance, some hand-holding to performing and otherwise viable units in tiding over temporary difficulties. But even RBI data shows that restructuring has been often used by banks for 'evergreening' problem accounts, thereby just postponing the recognition of a problem."Forbearance may be a reasonable but risky regulatory strategy when there is some hope that growth will pick up soon and the system will recover on its own," Rajan had said in July 2016. "Everyone – banker, promoter, investors, and government officials – often use such a strategy because it kicks the problem down the road, hopefully for someone else to deal with. The downside is that when growth does not pick up, the bad loan problem is bigger, and dealing with it is more difficult."INSOLVENCY RESOLUTIONCentral bankers on many occasions in the past have said that restructuring schemes were required because India did not have an effective bankruptcy law in place. In 2016, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (IBC), which is a comprehensive bankruptcy code, was enacted and notified. The Code envisages timely resolution of borrower defaults through collective decision making by the creditors. But, the success of the law is yet to be proven."The general approach of bankers to stress in large assets has been one of avoiding the de jure recognition of non-performance of such accounts," NS Vishwanathan, RBI deputy governor, had said earlier. "This is why we have a history of a large number of cases of failed restructuring as the schemes were used for avoiding a downgrade rather than resolving the asset. Prolonging the true asset quality recognition suited both the bankers and borrowers."As per the latest data from the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India, 58% of all closed cases under bankruptcy to date were via liquidation while only 14% of cases were resolved with an average haircut of nearly 57% on admitted claims.ENCOURAGE GOOD BEHAVIOUR"Good practices should be encouraged so that there is incentive toward credit discipline. What is the guarantee if the economy goes from bad to worse, these loans will be repaid," says Sur. "Banks have taken excessive risk in the past which is why we are seeing encouragement of bad behaviour."While many say that the RBI move is intended to improve monetary transmission, provide credit support to fields that have multiplier effects within the wider economy, the regulator should also bring in rules to reward those with better credit discipline. The regulator is also aware of the risks that the relaxations bring in, but places the onus on banks to ensure that their books don't have a hole."Sector-specific pockets of stress need policy attention," Governor Das said at a conference this week. "At the same time, proper due diligence and risk pricing in lending are of prime importance so that the health of the banking sector is not compromised while ensuring adequate flow of credit to productive sectors of the economy. Timely mitigation measures like faster resolution, better recovery, etc, need to be continued to bring down gross nonperforming assets.''
ET Intelligence Group: SBI Cards & Payment Services (SBI Cards), a credit card subsidiary of State Bank of India (SBI) will raise Rs 500 crore through fresh issue of shares and up to Rs 9,854 crore through offer for sale of existing shares. After the IPO, SBI's shareholding will fall to 70 per cent from 74 per cent and that of CA Rover Holdings will reduce to 16 per cent from 26 per cent. Given its dominant position in the domestic credit cards market and strong parentage of SBI, the company is well-positioned to take advantage of the rising trend of digital payments. Investors with a longterm horizon and wanting an exposure to growing consumerism may consider the IPO.BUSINESS AND FINANCIALSThe company is the largest pure play credit card issuer in India. Considering the card services of banks, it is the second largest after HDFC Bank. With 10 million cards in force and Rs 98,500 crore in card spends in the nine months to December 2019, SBI Cards had 18 per cent market share. Nearly half the cards are issued using distribution channels of SBI and other banks while the remaining are through its customer acquisition network across 145 Indian cities.Credit card spends in the country increased by 32 per cent annually to Rs 6.1 trillion between FY15 and FY19 according to RBI and CRISIL following rising awareness of digital payments. The proportion of digital transactions increased to 62 per cent in FY19 from 25 per cent in FY14. These factors augur well for SBI Cards. The company's revenue and net profit doubled to Rs 7,286.8 crore and Rs 862.7 crore respectively between FY17 and FY19. In the nine months to December 2019, net profit crossed the FY19 level to reach Rs 1,161.2 crore while revenue was Rs 7,240.1 crore. Its return on equity (RoE) has remained above 28 per cent since FY17. 74310967 RISKSCompetition from prepaid instruments such as e-wallets and UPI service is rising though they are mainly used for small transactions and do not offer credit period or benefit of reward points unlike credit cards. In addition, SBI Cards has adopted technologies to offer virtual cards on various mobile platforms thereby improving its appeal to tech savvy young generation.Economic slowdown affecting discretionary spend is another major risk. However, so far, the company has not experienced any slowdown in either card issuance or card spending.VALUATIONConsidering the equity after IPO and annualising the net profit in the nine-month to December 2019, the company demands price-earnings multiple (P/E) of nearly 46. It has no listed peers in India. A look at more mature markets such as the US reveals that American Express, which derives over half of the revenue from consumer services including credit cards, trades at a trailing P/E of around 17 with RoE of nearly 30 per cent. Another US company Capital One, which earns nearly two-third revenue from the card business, trades at a P/E of 9.2 and has an RoE of 10 per cent. While SBI Cards' valuation looks aggressive, it reflects the faster growth in the Indian market as well as the company's growth momentum.
The worrying prospect that the Covid-19 outbreak could become the first truly disruptive pandemic of the globalisation era is renewing doubts over the stability of the world economy. With the death toll approaching 3,000, over 80,000 cases officially recorded and an outbreak in Italy now shutting down the richest chunk of its economy, some economists are beginning to wargame what an untethered outbreak could mean for global growth.Oxford Economics reckons an international health crisis could be enough to wipe more than $1 trillion from global GDP. That would be the economic price tag for a spike in workplace absenteeism, lower productivity, sliding travel, disrupted supply chains and reduced trade and investment.Investors are already nervous, with US stock benchmarks slumping more than 3% on Monday and the S&P 500 Index dropping the most since February 2018.For now, central bankers and governments continue to bet that Covid-19 will not damage the world economy by much, and perhaps allow it to enjoy a rapid rebound once the illness fades. But that confidence is being tested. While the IMF currently reckons the virus will only force it to knock 0.1 percentage point off its 3.3% global growth forecast for 2020, IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath said in an interview that a pandemic declaration would risk "really downside, dire scenarios".The WHO head called the new cases "deeply concerning," but said the outbreak isn't yet a pandemic.Still, the protracted shutdown of Chinese factories that were supposed to be back online and spread of the virus to South Korea, Iran and Italy's industrial heartland raise the spectre of much greater death and disruption. The virus risks tipping Italy into a recession that could hurt the rest of Europe too.Korea's economy is being buffered, with consumer confidence plunging the most in five years. How to assess the risk is complicated by doubt over how far Covid-19 will travel.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said it was important for technology to be regulated as it becomes increasingly critical, although he cautioned that over-regulation could increase costs to businesses, especially entrepreneurs. Calling privacy a human right, Nadella told ET in an interview that Microsoft would conform to India's proposed privacy rules. He also said the company's success was defined by its economic impact and not because of its high market capitalisation. Edited Excerpts:Two of the large technology companies with trillion-dollar market caps are headed by Indians. Is that number important to you?(Amod Malviya), co-founder of Udaan, put it well: What is more important to us is the overall surplus and economic value that gets created in every country and in every community we work in.When I come to India, I make sure we're talking about our technology. (Take) Apollo Hospitals, they created a new AI model for the South Asian population with cardiac issues…A unicorn like Udaan was able to achieve success with just 17-18 people. 74310832 If you're creating that local surplus, we (Microsoft) will even have the permission to operate. That is true in every country — in India, the United States and in the UK.To me that is what is most important. If you just celebrate your own market cap and you don't see success broadly around the world, then I think that market cap is going to be very transitory. 74310838 You have said that we need to build technologies in areas such as health, agriculture and education, not just focused on consumer tech. How can India build for the world? There is nothing wrong with the consumer economy getting lots of innovation. After all, the mobile revolution along with consumer internet companies have really changed the lives of people, in terms of their access to services. The question now is, can we make it broader? Here is a company that says electric vehicles are going to be our future, let us completely create a new grid effectively for batteries. That's a startup here that's relevant everywhere. Or, take this company that says I can build an exoskeleton device for anybody with spinal cord injuries, and they're already taking it to North America. Those are all very innovative ideas coming out of India that have global relevance. 74310847 You have spoken about being open to regulation and about ethics in Artificial Intelligence. Yet, there has been a pushback from local teams every time governments try to bring new policies on data localisation or digital tax. As technology becomes much more pervasive, just like we have regulation in food safety, like we have the Federal Aviation Authority for air traffic (in the United States) and so on, we will always have regulation for things that are very mission critical in our lives and society.Privacy is a human right. We implemented the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, but (also) took the subject rights and implemented them all over the world. In India, there will be equivalent legislation and we will conform to it.Even around AI and AI ethics, it's ultimately a tool. How the tool gets used is something every country and society will need some norms around…one issue with overregulating anything means you fragment things, you increase transaction costs. The last thing you want to do is increase the cost of doing business for successful entrepreneurs from here.Your remarks on the Citizenship Amendment Act recently were seen as controversial. Were you taken aback?I think every country is going to define their own policies around immigration and national security. In democracies, it's the people and governments that decide. I mostly speak from being someone who grew up here…proud of my heritage of a multicultural India and as an immigrant, my hope is that this country continues to be a progressive democracy that really helps more people find that this is the land of their dreams. I think this is what is true about India today and I am very confident that it will be true of India in future. The political discourse in the US recently has been anti-big business. One (Democratic Party) candidate has talked about breaking big tech companies like Facebook. What is your view?Ultimately, every company effectively has the moral licence to operate in any community because what it creates, empowers and enables. Just because you are big doesn't mean anything. One of the things that we all have to re-acquaint ourselves with is, perhaps, what's the social contract of a corporation. It is about finding profitable solutions to the challenges of people on the planet. 74310852 74310857 In your book, you talk about the Gini coefficient, but you are not obviously a believer in extreme equality…Would you like to expound on that?I am not a political scientist or an economist. I get enthusiastic when some of the cutting-edge technologies like HoloLens is being used by first-line workers in a manufacturing (unit) to basically tame the learning curve, which means they are getting better wage support. That's a fantastic use of technology and its implication, even taking broader job creation and wage support. Ultimately, that's what needs to happen.Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani talked about a very deep partnership. What are its main elements?Fundamentally, they have really bet on our platform. They are big users (of our products). They're also looking at how they can use the cloud infrastructure to build new types of solutions for some of the ambitious (plans) they have around small and medium-sized businesses… our identity there is to give them the technology and help them realize their ambitions. You transformed Microsoft's culture. Is that here to stay?Nothing gives any company a God given right to stay. It comes down to staying true to your mission every day and a culture that allows you to stay relevant and express your mission with changing technology. I feel really good about the cultural meme we picked around growth mindset…you have to confront your fixed mindset each day. Will it stay? It is a function of each day — whether you wake up and say, I am not perfect and what can I learn, and the day you feel you have even achieved a growth mindset means you don't have a growth mindset. That is the paradox. It applies to human beings, it applies to organisations.
Jaipur: Rajasthan plans to set up 30,000 MW of solar power plants in next five years and is in talks with leading private and state-run companies to develop energy parks, the state's energy minister BD Kalla told ET.This will add to an already installed capacity of around 50,000 MW in the state, he said."We have come up with a new solar policy in which we are giving a host of incentives, including relaxations in stamp duty, electricity duty and transmission and wheeling charges. We are also allowing banking of energy for captive consumption and third-party sale on yearly basis," Kalla said.Recently, the Centre allocated Rajasthan a 25,000 MW ultra mega renewable energy park. The state government has identified land bank of 125,000 hectares in three districts — Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur—for this park."This park would solely be developed by central public sector units engaged in solar power generation," said Ajitabh Sharma, principal secretary at Rajasthan's energy department and chairman of Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation, the state's nodal agency for renewables."However, we want to promote both private and public sector equally in Rajasthan, which is also one of the objectives of solar policy. Let us first evaluate the proposition of the ultra mega energy park," Sharma said.He said of the 30,000 MW—the target Rajasthan has set for next five years—the state is looking to install solar plants of 10,000 MW in next three years in the first phase. "We are in talks with many PSUs including NHPC, NTPC, PFC, Tehri Hydro Power and Sutlej Jal Vidyut among few others. While NTPC is looking for 5,000 MW, others are aiming at 1,000 MW each," he said.
ET Intelligence Group: From Benjamin Graham to Peter Lynch, consumer stocks have been among the firm favourites of market mavens extolling the virtues of value investing. They are considered all-weather investments, with no problems of unsupportable debt on their balance sheets or inordinately long working capital cycles. Yet, they have trailed the broader markets of late. But history suggests that trend could reverse. The price ratio of the Nifty FMCG index and the Nifty has dropped to 2.5, a level at which the index for consumption stocks finds strong support. Usually, the ratio rebounds to 2.7-2.9 in the following three to seven months after it drops to the support level of 2.4-2.5. For instance, the price ratio slipped to 2.5 in May 2017 and rebounded to 2.89 by July 2017. Neeraj Agarwal, vicepresident at Antique broking, said the price ratio is closer to support levels, indicating a higher probability of outperformance in the FMCG index over the Nifty. 74310619 The Nifty FMCG index has underperformed the Nifty by 13 per cent in 2019 — the most in the past seven years — although the consumption stock index underperformed the benchmark for three years out of the previous 10.Also, the seasonality factors in the price ratio matrix may support the Nifty FMCG index. The cumulative average return in March and April of the Nifty FMCG index was 7.1 per cent, while the Nifty return was 4.4 per cent in the past 10 years. Stocks such as Godrej Industries, Tata Global, United Breweries, and Colgate have historically recorded the highest degree of outperformance in March and April, Antique Broking's data showed.
In a volatile trading last week, crude oil prices touched one-month high and then fell back as coronavirus fears were back in the markets, with infection and death tolls rising in South Korea, Italy and the Middle East. The coronavirus epidemic is battering economic activity and global oil demand, sending oil prices into a tailspin. Major oil-producing countries and companies have been gradually adjusting to the reality of declining global demand in the mid to long term.On the data front, Japan's economy shrank 1.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2019. The decline from the third quarter was the biggest contraction since 2014. The drop was even more severe – a 6.3% plunge – when measured as an annualised rate. The markets were underestimating the effects of the virus, but now it is creating a sudden demand shock. The supply-chain recovery in China could be problematic despite stimulus pledge from Beijing. Total Chinese product demand may drop by about 3.4 Mbpd day in February and average 1.5 Mbpd in the first quarter. Meanwhile, lower Chinese refinery demand has caused floating storage to accumulate offshore in China where most of these idling very large crude carriers have been loaded with March barrels and not yet with April deliveries. The market has also started to see the impact on lower refining margins in Asia and Europe. This is largely as a result of lower demand for petroleum refined products, especially for Jet fuel, which has been affected by global flight restrictions related to coronavirus. Jet fuel prices are now expected to fall to near-record lows. Lower demand for petroleum-refined products in China has led Beijing to cut gasoline and diesel retail prices for the second time in 2020.OpecSaudi Arabia is looking for quick action, presumably to stem the downward spiral in crude prices, but Russia seems non-committal to the output deal proposed. Facts state that Russian oil companies can tolerate Brent below $60. But remember, Moscow has bound itself with a pledge to cooperate with Opec. Doesn't mean it can't be broken, but breaking it now could shock crude into the $40s. If prices stay at these levels, they could start hammering the Middle East and North Africa that are already struggling with regional political conflicts, violent domestic strife, or both. These include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Libya and Nigeria.Markets showed little reaction to US sanctioning a trading unit of Russian oil giant Rosneft for its ties with Venezuela's state-run PDVSA, a move which could choke the Opec member's crude exports even further. At the same time, conflict in Libya that has led to a blockade of its ports and oilfields shows no signs of a resolution.Unconfirmed reports suggest that Saudi Arabia is weighing to break its production alliance with Russia amid a disagreement between the oil heavyweights over the effect of China's COVID-19 outbreak on global crude demand. Markets will wait for further new updates on this front.OutlookThe focus would be on the Opec+ decision and the size of supply cuts to bring stability back to the market. An emergency meeting of technical experts over February 4-6 recommended a deepening of collective output cuts to 2.7 Mbpd in the second quarter from the cut of 2.1 Mbpd agreed for January-March.Investors are wagering on the US Federal Reserve to step in with a rate cut to support economic growth after data from US showed that the business activity stalled in February, signalling a contraction for the first time since 2016. The US manufacturing sector also clocked its lowest reading since August. The outlook for crude looks worrisome and not constructive, with expectations that the market will return to surplus over H12020. Global oil demand growth is still languishing and the market will be closely watching to see what Russia does next.(Investors are advised to consult financial advisers before taking an investment calls based on these observations)

You might not know it, but toothpaste is good for cleaning other things besides teeth. In fact, if your vehicle's headlights are starting to look a little foggy, one of the simplest solutions is to polish the plastic outer covers using a dab of ordinary toothpaste and a soft cloth or brush. In just a few minutes, the gentle abrasives in the toothpaste will help remove dust, dirt, grime, and light-dimming oxidation, making your headlights shine brighter and clearer.
Wash the headlights thoroughly with glass cleaner or soapy water. Spray your cleaner of choice liberally onto both headlights. Then, use a microfiber cloth or soft automobile sponge to wipe away as much dust, dirt, and stuck-on debris as possible.[1]
Giving your headlights a quick preliminary wipedown will get rid of the worst of the mess, allowing the toothpaste to work more effectively on what's left.
Dry the headlights using an absorbent towel or chamois. Once your headlights are clean, dab them with your towel or chamois to soak up any standing streaks or droplets of moisture. Be sure to dry off the edges of the covers, as well.[2]
If you're using a towel, make sure it's of the lint-free variety. Otherwise, you could end up leaving behind small fibers, which can easily become stuck on the headlight covers.
Alternatively, you can apply the toothpaste while the headlights are still wet to produce a bubbly lather similar to soap.[3]
Tape off the area around your headlights. Stick strips of automotive masking tape or painter's tape over the paint at the top, bottom, and sides of both lights. Afterwards, inspect your work closely to make sure that there's no exposed paint visible near the portion of the lights you'll be cleaning.[4]
The gritty toothpaste, combined with the pressure of polishing, could potentially damage any paint that's not covered with tape.
Apply a dime-sized blob of toothpaste to each headlight. Squeeze the toothpaste directly onto the center of the plastic covers, or apply it to the cloth or sponge you'll be using to do your polishing. Spread the toothpaste outwards in widening circles until it covers the entire surface of the headlights.[5]
Try not to smear the toothpaste on too thick—it's best to start with a small amount and add more later as needed.
It's important to use an ordinary type of toothpaste rather than a gel. Gel toothpastes don't contain abrasives, which are what is actually responsible for chipping away at the dingy layer of oxidation making the lights appear foggy.[6]
Polish the headlights vigorously using a microfiber cloth or sponge. Scrub every inch of the covers from top to bottom, moving your cloth or sponge in tight, circular motions to wear down stubborn buildup. You should notice even the heaviest gunk and grime begin to disappear within seconds.[7]
If your headlights don't look any cleaner after your first few passes, switch to a soft-bristled brush to increase your coverage and really work the toothpaste into the plastic. An old toothbrush is perfectly suited for the task (who would've thought?).[8]
Getting your headlights looking like-new may require a little bit of elbow grease. Take your time, and don't be afraid to really dig in.
Rinse both headlights with warm water. Spray the lights with a hose or spray bottle, or douse them with water from a bucket or similar container if you don't have either of the aforementioned tools. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear to ensure that you've flushed away every last trace of toothpaste.[9]
Don't forget to remove the tape from around your headlights when you're finished.
Any toothpaste you miss will dry to a cloudy film, leaving you right back where you started.
Apply a coat of UV-resistant sealant to shield your headlights from the sun. Wet a folded paper towel with the sealant solution and wipe it onto both headlight covers. Use long, sweeping strokes and aim for full coverage. Unless otherwise specified, apply only a single coat of sealant.[10]
You can pick up a bottle of UV-resistant headlight sealant for just a few dollars at any automotive supply store, as well as most supercenters, gas stations, and convenience stores.[11]
A good UV sealant will slow the formation of oxidation on your headlight covers as a result of exposure to the sun's rays.
Allow the sealant to cure in the sun for 10-45 minutes. Park your vehicle someplace outdoors where it can receive direct or partial sunlight. Most headlight sealants dry to the touch in a few minutes and cure to full strength within about half an hour. Exact cure times can vary somewhat, however, depending on humidity levels and the amount of sunlight available.[12]
If you happen to have a UV lamp, you can speed up the process by shining it directly on your headlights for 10-15 minutes, or until they're completely dry.[13]
Hold off on washing your vehicle for at least 8 hours after applying headlight sealant.
Repeat the process every 2-4 months, or as needed. Using toothpaste to polish your car's headlights is a great way to restore their original shine, but it's not a permanent fix. In order to ensure that they stay bright and clear and provide maximum visibility, you'll want to get in the habit of cleaning and sealing them every couple of months.
You may need to up the frequency of your cleanings if you do a lot of driving.
If you don't like the idea of cleaning your headlights with toothpaste, it may be worth it to spend a little more on a commercial headlight restoration kit. These come with re-finishing polishes and pads that work in much the same way, but are formulated specially for use on automobiles.
Steer clear of toothpastes containing flavor crystals, deep-cleaning beads, or other add-ins. Oversized abrasives can scratch the plastic surface of your headlight covers, causing them to show dirt more plainly and making them harder to clean in the future.
While cashmere is beloved for its softness and warmth, it's also notoriously difficult to care for and maintain. Thankfully, there are a few easy steps you can take to ensure your cashmere remains in good condition when storing it away. Whether you're storing cashmere for a few days, months, or even years, you can keep the fabric fresh and intact by cleaning it after your last wear, choosing the right kind of storage container, and putting it away in a clean and sanitized area.
Wash your cashmere before storing it to help keep bugs away. While insects like moths are attracted to cashmere fabric on its own, they'll be even more attracted to your cashmere if it has any residual body oil, products, or perfume on it from wear. Therefore, it's important that you wash the cashmere before storing it to make it somewhat less attractive to fabric-eating insects.[1]
Make sure your cashmere is completely dry before you put it in storage.
Remove pilling from your cashmere to keep it in good condition. Using a sweater comb or a small de-pilling razor, gently scrape off any pills that have formed on the cashmere's surface. This will not only leave your cashmere in better shape and ready to wear when you take it out of storage, it will allow the fabric to soften while it's being stored.[2]
Regardless of how you choose to remove pilling from cashmere, make sure that you work slowly and carefully to avoid ripping or cutting the fabric.
Steam your cashmere to sanitize it and remove wrinkles. First, put your fabric steamer on the cashmere or low-heat setting. Then, run the steamer over the fabric to both sanitize and de-wrinkle it so it'll be fresh and ready to use when you get it out of storage.[3]
If you don't have a steamer, you can also use an iron by putting it on the lowest heat setting and placing a damp cloth between the cashmere and the iron as you gently and carefully run it over the fabric.
If the cashmere feels damp after you steam it, let it dry completely before putting it in storage.
Keep your cashmere in a chest or closet for short-term storage. If you're storing your cashmere in between wears, keeping it in a wooden chest or folded in a closet will suffice. While a chest or closet alone won't completely keep insects at bay for long periods of time, both of these options usually allow you to fold the cashmere and lay it flat, keeping it from getting crumpled or damaged.[4]
If you plan to store your cashmere in a chest or closet long term, make sure that you use moth balls or liners to keep moths from eating the fabric.
Store cashmere in plastic garment bags for up to 3 months. If you're storing cashmere for a short period of time and want to protect it from insects, plastic garment bags are a great option. However, only store cashmere in plastic for up to 3 months because the change in seasonal weather and temperature can cause condensation to form in the bags, which can cause the cashmere to mildew or turn yellow.[5]
Make sure that plastic garment bags are airtight to keep moths and other insects away from your cashmere.[6]
You can also use plastic storage containers to store your cashmere as long as it is airtight.
Put cashmere in cotton canvas garment bags for long-term storage. If you plan on storing your cashmere for more than 3 months, cotton canvas garment bags are likely your best bet. Unlike plastic or wooden containers, cotton bags are both insect and moisture resistant, and will allow the fabric to breath so it won't get musky over time.[7]
Canvas garment bags that are made out of cotton are available widely online and at many storage and home improvement retailers.
Avoid storing cashmere in cardboard boxes. While they are cheap and convenient for storage, cardboard boxes do not have a neutral pH. Therefore, the chemicals in the cashmere fabric could react with the acid or alkaline in the cardboard, which can discolor or disintegrate the fabric.[8]
Vacuum and wipe-down the storage area to keep the cashmere clean. When storing cashmere, it's important that you clean the storage area to keep it from attracting insects or damaging the fabric. Therefore, before placing your cashmere in storage, use a vacuum to remove dust, as well as a sanitizing wipe to sanitize the storage area.[9]
If you wipe it down with a wet cloth or wipe, make sure that the area is completely dry before placing your cashmere inside.
Line the storage area with anti-moth paper or balls. Unfortunately, moths love to eat holes in cashmere fabric. As a result, it's helpful to line your storage area with anti-moth paper liners before laying the cashmere inside, or placing moth balls on and around the cashmere to keep moths at bay.[10]
Paper liners can also help protect the fabric from catching and snagging on wood, plastic, or anything else stored in the same container.
You can also put cedar balls or chips in the storage area to repel these cashmere-eating insects.[11]
Wrap your cashmere in acid-free tissue to preserve the color. If you want to take an extra precaution to protect your cashmere, you can wrap it in acid-free tissue paper. This will help preserve the color by protecting the fabric from anything acidic or alkaline, while also protecting the cashmere against moisture and dust.[12]
Acid-free tissue paper is widely available online and at most craft and storage stores.
Fold your cashmere to minimize wrinkles. First, fold the arms of your cashmere in over top of the front of the sweater. Then fold the bottom up over the arms to meet the top.[13] This will allow the cashmere to lay as flat as possible in the storage container.
If you need to fold the cashmere smaller, you can fold it in half one more time. Try to fold it as little as possible, however, to avoid wrinkles.
Lay your cashmere in the storage container. Place the cashmere in storage container, laying it as flat as possible. This will keep the fabric from wrinkling and will help prevent it from getting and snags or tears.[14]
Never keep cashmere in hanging storage, as hangers can cause the material to stretch and distort.[15]
Store your cashmere away from sunlight to avoid discoloration. Regardless of what storage container you choose, make sure that your cashmere is stored in a dark, concealed location away from sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight, and even some strong indoor lighting, can cause your cashmere to discolor permanently.[16]
This is particularly important for bright colors, as they tend to fade quicker and more drastically.
Mardi Gras is a festival known by many names around the world, including Carnival, Fasching, and Fat Tuesday. Among Christians, this joyful holiday is an occasion to cut loose and celebrate before the more somber season of Lent begins. No matter what your beliefs or cultural background, you can celebrate Mardi Gras by eating delicious foods, dressing up in colorful attire, and attending fun parades and festivities. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure to have a good time!
Wear purple, green, and gold to symbolize justice, faith, and power. The classic colors of Mardi Gras were first popularized by the Rex Organization, one of several secret societies, or krewes, that help define the way Mardi Gras is celebrated in the U.S.[1] Embrace the spirit of the holiday by dressing up in your flashiest purple, green, and gold clothes.
For example, you might wear an emerald green dress with a purple shawl and gold shoes. Or, you could accessorize a suit with a purple tie, green socks, and a gold pocket square!
The Rex Organization debuted this color scheme at their 1892 "Symbolism of Colors" parade.
Make a colorful Mardi Gras mask. Masks and costumes are a long-standing Mardi Gras tradition, going back to medieval European Shrove Tuesday celebrations. Buy a colorful mask, or make your own and decorate it with gold, green, and purple beads, glitter, and feathers.[2]
Print out a mask template online or buy one from a craft store, then paint it and decorate it however you like.
Today, you can only legally wear masks in public in Louisiana on Mardi Gras!
Decorate yourself with beads. Mardi Gras has become synonymous with colorful plastic beads, which are thrown out to revelers during parades.[3] Even if you can't attend a parade, get into the Mardi Gras spirit by putting on a few strings of shiny gold, green, and purple beads.
You can also decorate your home with beads and Mardi Gras doubloons (fake coins).
Listen to festive, upbeat music like zydeco, jazz, or Samba. Music is an important part of any celebration, and Mardi Gras is no exception! New Orleans has many musical genres associated with it, and you can't go wrong with listening to some classic jazz, blues, or zydeco. If you're feeling a little more international, you can listen to Mardi Gras-themed music from cultures around the world, like Brazil or Italy. [4]
If you're hosting a party, put together an upbeat Mardi Gras playlist. You can even celebrate the rich variety of Mardi Gras traditions by including tunes from the many different countries where Mardi Gras or Carnival is celebrated.
Have a food fight with your friends. Mardi Gras is a time to cut loose and do things you normally couldn't get away with (as long as it's all in good fun). In some countries, like Italy and Belgium, festival-goers celebrate by pelting each other with oranges.[5] If your friends are okay with it, take the opportunity to blow off some steam by flinging oranges or other food at each other.
The biggest Fat Tuesday food fight is the annual Battle of the Oranges in Ivrea, Italy. This fun event is said to date back to the 12th century.[6]
Feast on tasty po-boy sandwiches for lunch. The po-boy is a quick and easy Mardi Gras sandwich that you can make with almost any ingredients. The only rules are that you should have them on crusty, fresh-baked French bread and smother them in gravy. Fill up your sandwich with breaded shrimp, catfish, oysters, roast beef, ham and cheese, or even French fries.[7]
Make a jambalaya. Jambalaya is a classic Mardi Gras dish that combines shrimp, chicken, sausage, rice, and veggies in a spicy sauce made with garlic, onions, and tomatoes.[8] Get together with friends and family to cook jambalaya from scratch, or purchase a ready-made rice and seasoning mix and add a few of your own fresh ingredients.
Other popular Mardi Gras shrimp dishes include gumbo, shrimp etouffee, and shrimp and grits.
If you love shellfish, but shrimp isn't your crustacean of choice, you could cook crab cakes or have a crawfish boil instead![9]
As an alternative to pork sausage, you can use ham hocks, bacon, or pickled pork.
Serve a sweet king cake for dessert. This traditional Mardi Gras dessert looks like giant, colorful donut and contains a surprising secret ingredient: a tiny plastic baby. Bake your own king cake or buy a pre-made one at your local bakery. Whoever gets the piece with the baby inside wins good luck—and hosting duties for next year's Mardi Gras party![12]
If you make your own king cake, decorate it with a sweet glaze and sprinkles in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of green, purple, and gold. Put the baby in after you bake the cake so that it doesn't melt or burn during cooking.
According to some versions of Mardi Gras lore, the king cake traditionally had a ring or bean inside rather than a toy baby. The baby is thought to symbolize the baby Jesus, a nod to the Mardi Gras festival's religious roots.[13]
Fry some crispy beignets for another traditional dessert option. Beignets donuts are another classic staple of New Orleans Mardi Gras cuisine. After you make your dough, let it chill in the fridge overnight before you fry it for best results. Dust the beignets with powdered sugar and serve them warm and fresh.[14]
As an easy alternative to the classic beignet recipe, which involves yeast, eggs, sugar, flour, shortening, and evaporated milk, you can use pancake or biscuit mix. Combine the mix with enough milk to make a thick dough, then roll it out, cut it into squares, and fry it until it's golden-brown.
Other popular dessert options include pecan pralines, Bananas Foster, and monkey bread.
Try a festive milk punch. Milk punch is a creamy dessert drink that's reminiscent of eggnog. To make it, combine milk, sugar, bourbon, and vanilla to taste. Shake it up with crushed ice and top it off with a sprinkling of nutmeg.[15]
Check when Mardi Gras celebrations will be happening this year. Mardi Gras takes place on the day before Ash Wednesday, in late February or early March. Since this holiday falls on a different day each year, check your calendar ahead of time to make sure you don't miss it.[16]
In 2020, Mardi Gras will take place on February 25.
You can easily check the date by doing an online search for "Mardi Gras date this year."
In some areas, the Mardi Gras or Carnival season lasts for several days. For example, the Carnival festivities in Brazil last from the Friday before Ash Wednesday to the midday on Ash Wednesday.
Search online to find parades and parties in your area. Even if you don't live in an area where Mardi Gras is a major holiday, there's a good chance that some events will be happening nearby. Go online and do a search using terms like "Mardi Gras festival near me," or check the arts and entertainment section of your local newspaper for information.
For example, many towns and cities throughout the U.S. celebrate with parties, parades, food tasting events, and pub crawls on Mardi Gras.
Travel to NOLA or Mobile, Alabama to attend major celebrations in the U.S. Most people in the U.S. associate Mardi Gras with New Orleans, LA. However, the first major celebrations in the U.S. took place in Mobile, AL.[17] If you live in the U.S. and want to participate in one of the country's biggest Mardi Gras festivals, make plans to travel to one of these southern cities.
Since these celebrations are immensely popular, it's a good idea to book tickets and hotel accommodations as far in advance as popular.
Other major celebrations around the world take place in Venice, Italy; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Basel, Switzerland; Cologne, Germany; Trinidad and Tobago; and Martinique.
Attend a parade and catch "throws". Parades are a big part of Fat Tuesday celebrations all over the world. Whether you're traveling or celebrating in your hometown, try to attend one of these exciting events. These parades involve colorful floats with Mardi Gras "royalty" dressed in elaborate costumes. People on the floats throw treats and trinkets such as beads, cups, and plastic coins to the onlookers.[18]
Expect big crowds and rowdy celebrations. Mardi Gras festivities are crowded, loud, and high-energy events. If you attend one of the major festivals, be prepared for lots of noise and excitement! You can make the best of the festivities by taking a few common-sense steps and precautions, such as:[19]
Arriving a few hours early for parades in order to get a good viewing spot
Choosing a designated meet-up spot if you're going to be meeting family or friends
Bringing ladder box seats for kids or small adults for better viewing
Carrying a bag to stash your throws
Walking or taking a bike to avoid festival traffic
Avoiding rowdier areas, such as the NOLA French Quarter, if you have kids with you
Wearing comfy shoes
Carrying your valuables in a front-facing belt-bag rather than in your purse or a back pocket
