Germany's Heiko Maas criticizes US for Iran strategy
The foreign minister has condemned Washington's handling of the Iran conflict. Maas has advised following Europe's footsteps in diplomacy and called for further negotiations.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas criticized US President Donald Trump on Sunday for his policy of maximum pressure against Iran.
"We should not pretend that an externally induced regime change in Tehran will automatically improve the situation. That has gone badly elsewhere, like in Iraq," Maas told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

* The US military's shift to focus on competition with Russia and China has put renewed attention on the threat of nuclear weapons. * Nuclear war remains an extremely unlikely but dangerous threat, and one the Army is thinking more about, the service's chief of staff, Gen. James McConville, said this week. * Responding to it and other challenges effectively requires the right people with the right skills, and the Army has several programs meant to ensure it has them, McConville said.
The US's shift to "great-power competition" with Russia and China has focused attention on the array of sophisticated weaponry those countries field, from growing submarine fleets to thickets of anti-aircraft systems.
But which of those weapons is most concerning?
"Nuclear weapons ... absolutely," Gen. James McConville, the Army chief of staff, said Tuesday during an event at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC.
* An outbreak of coronavirus in China is spreading to more cities, Chinese authorities reported on Monday, with 139 new cases found over the weekend, including a third death. * The new cases, the first inside China outside the central city of Wuhan where the virus was first reported, come as the country gears up for the Lunar New Year holidays later this week, when hundreds of millions of Chinese travel domestically and abroad. * The new virus belongs to the same family of coronaviruses that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed nearly 800 people globally during a 2002/03 outbreak that also started in China.
An outbreak of a new coronavirus in China has spread to more cities, Chinese authorities said on Monday, as the number of patients tripled and a third person died, stoking concerns about the containment of the virus.
The Daxing health commission in the capital Beijing said it had confirmed two cases of coronavirus, while the southern Guangdong province's health commission confirmed one case in Shenzhen. They mark the first cases in China beyond the central city of Wuhan where the virus first emerged.
The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission said 136 new cases of pneumonia caused by the coronavirus strain had been found in the city over the weekend, adding to 62 already known cases. A third death occurred on Saturday, the authority said in a statement.

(Ft. Worth, Texas) -- Filled with stacks of fuselage panels, engine components and a wide assortment of pipes, electronics and avionics, the spralling F-35 construction facility in Ft. Worth, Texas, resembles a small city filled with engineers, mechanics, electricians and airplanes at various stages of construction.
While some stations include vertically-hanging airplane wings, rudders, pipes and intricate collections of wires running through the fuselage, others contain little more than an assortment of seemingly disconnected small parts. Farther along the mile-long construction strip, heavily trafficked by workers, builders and engineers, there are bays with nearly completed F-35 with a light-green exterior. These "about to be finished" F-35s, roll into a separate environmentally-controlled hanger where they await a final coat of blended gray paint - giving the aircraft its color.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has continued warning that terrorist groups as well as a 'flood of refugees' will show up on Europe's shores if the Tripoli government were to fall to renegade General Khalifa Haftar, amid his continued offensive to control the Libyan capital. Erdogan's statement came a day before he heads to Berlin for a major peace conference which will attempt to halt the fighting.
And yet look who's sending actual jihadists into the already war-ravaged country on comfortable commercial jets:
World leaders reached an agreement to push for a cease-fire in Libya and to more strictly enforce the arms embargo on the warring parties in the country, officials announced Sunday.
Leaders from 11 countries involved in the Libya dispute discussed for four hours in Berlin ways to alleviate the conflict, The Associated Press reported. The leaders of the two feuding sides in Libya were in the German capital but did not meet face-to-face or join the negotiations.
"We had to succeed in getting all the parties that connected in any way with the Libya conflict to speak with one voice ... because then the parties inside Libya will also understand that there is only a non-military way to a solution," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, according to the AP. "We achieved this result here."
* Andrew Peek is on leave from NSC pending a security investigation, reports say * Peek is the senior director for European and Russian affairs on the NSC * He was escorted from the White House grounds on Friday, sources say * Peek's two predecessors testified in the House impeachment inquiry
President Donald Trump's top Russia expert on the National Security Counsel is reportedly on leave pending a security investigation.
Andrew Peek, the NSC's senior director for European and Russian affairs, was escorted from the White House grounds on Friday, two people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.
Peek had been in the NSC role for just two months, after most recently working as a deputy assistant secretary of state with responsibility for Iran and Iraq.
He replaced Tim Morrison, who left the position after testifying in the House impeachment inquiry.
Described as 'third party information' the U.S.'s 66th Military Intelligence Brigade said they were told soldiers located at either Tower Barracks in Grafenwohr or Tower Barracks, Dulmen, pictured, could be the target
The United States has received intelligence regarding a potentially imminent attack being planned against its military personnel stationed in Germany, according to an official memo seen by Newsweek.
The U.S.'s 66th Military Intelligence Brigade received what was described as "third party information stating there was an [sic] possible imminent attack against U.S. Soldiers located at either Tower Barracks in Grafenwohr or Tower Barracks, Dulmen, exact location, date and time unknown." Newsweek reviewed the information marked unclassified from a senior U.S. intelligence official.
(Newsweek sought guidance from former Pentagon officials in order to ensure this reporting would not put any U.S. personnel at risk.)

When Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a radical overhaul of Russia's governance system this week, he also ended the Medvedev era. Dmitry Medvedev was, at least formally, Putin's closest sidekick, the politician with whom the strongman was most willing to share formal power. Whether or not it's time for Medvedev's political obit, his stint near the top of Russia's so-called power vertical will serve as an example of how the Putin system's inertia can suffocate the best modernizing intentions.
Medvedev abruptly resigned as prime minister on Wednesday, without giving advance notice to members of his government, who also had to tender their resignations. "We as the government must give our country's president the opportunity to make all the necessary decisions," Medvedev said, though it wasn't clear how his continued occupancy of the top cabinet post could get in the way of Putin's reform.
WNU Editor: Dmitry Medvedev says he is going to still lead the Party .... Medvedev Says He's Hanging On To United Russia Party Chairmanship (RFE). Even though United Russia has a super-majority in the State Duma (Russia's parliament), public support for the party is now almost non-existent. IMHO the future does not look bright for the former Prime Minister.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he would not like to see his country return to the Soviet practice of having lifelong rulers who died without a clear succession procedure.
Speaking to a group of World War II veterans in St. Petersburg on January 18, Putin was asked if it would be desirable to remove the term limit for presidents.
"It would be very worrying to return to the situation we had in the mid-1980s when state leaders stayed in power, one by one, until the end of their days and left office without ensuring the necessary conditions for a transition of power," Putin said. "I think it would be better not to return to that situation."

MOSCOW -- Russian security forces have detained at least 10 people who were taking part in a march in Moscow on January 19 to commemorate a human rights lawyer and a journalist who were killed by Russian neo-Nazis more than a decade ago.
The march has taken place each year in Moscow since lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova were killed in the Russian capital on January 19, 2009.
This year, however, some of the 1,500 marchers used the event to declare their opposition to constitutional changes proposed on January 15 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
They were quickly pulled aside by authorities and taken to police vans.
Lebanese security forces prepared for more violence on Sunday after a night of protests over the country's worsening financial situation gripped Lebanon's capital.
Demonstrators used rocks and other projectiles early Sunday while security forces responded by firing tear gas canisters and water cannons, before turning to rubber bullets. A few protesters tried to breach metal barriers that separated them from the riot police, while hundreds more gathered down the blocked street leading to the Parliament building.
Saudi Arabia has paid the US approximately $500 million to begin to cover the cost of US troops operating in the country, according to a US official.
The payment was made in December last year. President Donald Trump asserted last week in an interview with Fox News that Saudi Arabia had "already deposited $1 billion in the bank."
Earlier this week the Pentagon could not confirm that any payment had been made.
This is not the first time the Saudis have contributed to cover US military costs. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other Gulf states paid $36 billion towards the costs of the Gulf War in 1990-91.
Bilateral talks are ongoing over precisely what expenses will be covered by the Saudis. That decision will lead to a final calculation on what the US believes the Saudis owe.
Abdulrahman Sameer Noorah appears during his arraignment in Portland on Aug. 22, 2016. Federal law enforcement officials believe the Saudi Arabian government helped him flee the United States before his manslaughter trial the following year.
* The Saudi Government has been secretly helping its citizens escape prosecution for serious crimes in the US, the FBI has determined * A new bulletin from the federal agency revealed the secret effort has been carried out largely to spare the Persian Gulf kingdom embarrassment * The FBI warned the practice, which has been going on for years while US officials looked the other way, will likely continue without their intervention * The revelation comes after President Donald Trump signed into law a new requirement backed by Congressman Ron Wyden of Oregon * The law requires the FBI publicly disclose what it knows about the Saudi government's suspected role in helping its citizens avoid prosecution in the US * Among those suspected of escaping justice is Abulrahman Sameer Noorah, 21, who vanished weeks before his 2017 trial in the hit-and-run death of Fallon Smart
A new bulletin from the FBI has revealed that the Saudi government 'almost certainly' helped its citizens escape prosecution for serious crimes they were charged with in the US, and American officials looked the other way for years.
The secret effort was carried out to spare the Persian Gulf kingdom embarrassment, while US officials looked the other way for years, and will likely continue without their intervention, the FBI said in the bulletin released Friday.
The revelation comes after President Donald Trump signed into law a requirement backed by Representative Ron Wyden of Oregon that the FBI disclose what it knows about the Saudi government's suspected role in helping its citizens avoid prosecution in the US.
WNU Editor: There is only one way to stop this practise. Use this history of flight risk to deny bail to Saudi citizens who have been arrested on serious crimes.

The USS Little Rock is poised to become the third active Navy ship to be equipped with a new laser weapon.
The U.S. Navy says the Freedom class Littoral Combat Ship USS Little Rock will get a 150-kilowatt class laser weapon system from Lockheed Martin this year. This would make Little Rock the third of the service's warships to be fitted with a high-power laser of some kind, following the installation of two different designs on the Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Dewey and the San Antonio class landing platform dock amphibious ship USS Portland last year. The War Zone was first to report that both of these vessels had gotten their respective lasers.
US News and World Report ranked countries to determine which ones are the most powerful.
The US stays in first place this year, but other countries have changed positions amid rising global instability and political changes.
The US, Russia, and China remain the planet's most powerful countries even as other countries have seen their positions fall, according to this year's global power rankings.
The rankings, published by US News and World Report, look at how the influence of a nation, as well as its political, economic, and military power. The rankings are part of its annual "Best Countries" study, which evaluates 80 countries based on responses from 21,000 people.
These are the world's 25 most powerful nations, according to the 2020 rankings:
As battlefields move to cities, seeing around corners will give soldiers a huge advantage.
* Scientists are exploring ways to use lasers to "see" around corners. * Two promising methods complement each other, one gathering general information about an environment and the other more detailed—but limited—images of objects. * The two technologies could some day help soldiers "read" rooms, identifying adversaries without exposing themselves to enemy fire.
Here's an unexpected way lasers might beam their way onto the battlefield: sneaking a look around corners to detect adversaries.
University researchers funded by the Pentagon can now get an idea of what's in a room by reading the interference pattern of a laser beam. This could someday lead to devices that can peer into a room and detect everyone inside—and identify if they are armed.

* The International Rescue Committee humanitarian group has published its annual "Emergency Watchlist" listing the ten countries facing the world's worst crises in 2020. * These countries combined are home to less than 6% of the global population, but produced 74% of the world's refugees, the IRC said. * The crises they face largely include armed conflict, disease epidemics, and natural disasters, and so far see no signs of stopping. * Scroll down to see the list and why.
Every year, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) lists the ten countries facing the world's biggest humanitarian crises, in an effort to highlight the vast amount of work world leaders and aid workers need to do.
These countries combined are home to less than 6% of the global population, but produced 74% of the world's refugees, the IRC noted.
The crises that they face — which largely include armed conflict, disease epidemics, and natural disasters — have changed little since last year, highlighting the "protracted nature of many of these crises and collective failure of the international community to resolve their root causes," the IRC said.
Scroll down to see the countries on the IRC's "Emergency Watchlist," and the issues they face.

About the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI):
CSIR−Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore (A constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi) came into existence during 1950 with the great vision of its founders, and a network of inspiring as well as dedicated scientists who had a fascination to pursue in-depth research and development in the areas of food science and technology.
NEW DELHI: The Centre could include a host of off-budget spending and other government liabilities on its books to give a clearer picture of finances though this could raise the fiscal deficit sharply.Top government officials have held discussions on the move amid budget preparations and there is a growing view that a full picture is needed. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget on February 1."A clear account of real fiscal deficit should be presented...There have been discussions," said a government official. There have also been suggestions that the government switch to accrual-based accounting from cash, which means including payments it owes. The government has budgeted a fiscal deficit of 3.3% of GDP in the year to March. The fiscal deficit numbers have been criticised for excluding a number of items for which the general budget is liable. The move will mean the fiscal deficit for FY20 could get pushed to 4.5% or higher. Experts and others have repeatedly raised the issue of India's fiscal deficit numbers being understated. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had in July said in a presentation to the Finance Commission that the central government's key deficit figures may be considerably higher than those stated in the Union budget. In its assessment last month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also pointed to fiscal deficit suppression."Despite some improvement in reported fiscal deficits, debt as a share of GDP remains little changed over the past decade, partly due to increases in off-budget financing," it said, estimating public sector borrowings at 8.5% of GDP.In a blog post earlier this month, former finance secretary SC Garg had pointed to an understated fiscal deficit, pegging it at 4.66% and 4.39% in FY19 and FY18, respectively, rather than the 3.4% and 3.5% shown in the budget. Garg was in the finance ministry, heading the department of economic affairs, in those years. 73407409 The government has been providing an estimate of some off-budget items separately, but this is not included in the headline fiscal deficit.Such extra budgetary resources are pegged at 0.7% of GDP in FY20 and seen rising to 0.9% of GDP by FY22. The government defines these extra budgetary resources as those financial liabilities that are raised by public sector undertakings for which repayment of entire principal and interest is done from the union government budget. In effect, these fully serviced bonds are the Centre's liabilities, pegged at Rs 88,454 crore at the end of March 2019, or 0.5% of GDP. In addition, there is debt raised by entities such as the Food Corporation of India that is in effect a liability of the government and should be included in its debt and fiscal indicators.Experts said that since the government will anyway miss the 3.3% target for the year, it should look at cleaning up finances."It will make the budget process and budget numbers far more credible. Markets will find it much more credible," one of them said, arguing for a new glide path for the fiscal deficit after accounting for all off-budget borrowing. The fiscal responsibility law requires the government to attain a fiscal deficit target of 3% by FY21.State Bank of India group chief economic adviser Soumya Kanti Ghosh sees the fiscal deficit at 3.8% in the current fiscal.
Some parts of Oyo Hotels & Homes weren't probably ready for the pace of growth it has witnessed and the hospitality chain is trying to address such issues this year, says its new chief executive for India and South Asia, Rohit Kapoor in an exclusive interview to The Economic Times. While confirming reports of job cuts at the company, he tells Anumeha Chaturvedi that it is asking about 15-20% of its 12,000 employees to go in a "one-time exercise" that "is going to end very soon". There is no deadline from Japanese investor SoftBank to report operational profitability on some businesses, he says, and adds that the management is committed to improving relations with hotel partners. Edited excerpts:Oyo founder Ritesh Agarwal has reportedly said the company is asking some of its employees to move to a new career. What explains this? The question that whether some staff members are being asked to go is correct. Over the last one and a half years, there has been an increase in revenue to about 3x, and we had 1-million-plus rooms globally by the end of 2019. But I don't think we have any hesitation in admitting that growing at the pace that we did over the last three years, we did sometimes go ahead of ourselves … What we mean is that maybe all parts of the organisation were not ready for that pace of growth and that scale of operations, and 2020 is the year when we are taking active steps to address this. We have a clear roadmap for continuing to drive success for Oyo for this year and beyond based on factors like sustainable growth. The path to profitability for any company is the important question to be asked … in which quarter that happens is immaterial but there is no doubt in my mind that it needs to happen. We are addressing questions this year like what's the core business, which are the growth avenues we should rationalise, which are the profitable locations we should be in, what is the kind of growth that dilutes margins and how to reduce operating costs. A part of that is clearly looking at our people cost structures as we calibrate for growth. How many staff members are being asked to go as part of this restructuring and across which roles? When is this likely to be completed? Before this one-time exercise started, we stood at approximately 12,000 employees across our businesses. We have asked about 15-20% of the workforce to move to a different career. This is not easy for us, for the employees impacted and we completely recognise that. Yes, there are roles that will become redundant as the company drives tech-enabled synergies and enhanced efficiencies and these (that are being cut) are for example roles that lend themselves to centralisation and remote management using technology, such as partner support, customer support, analytics, reporting. Secondly, as we have combined some of our businesses like Oyo Home, Oyo Townhouse, Oyo Life, Collection O, Silver Key under one umbrella called Frontier businesses, the supervisory layer and leadership roles in the centre and field in these businesses are now consolidated … there will also be some excess capacity across multiple roles that may not be impacted just by technology but by other business decisions. Restructuring is a combination of all this. It is a complex one-time exercise and is going to end very soon. We are not talking months or even next month. After this there is no plan. What is being done in terms of severance packages for exiting employees and employee assistance?Let me step into the shoes of the employees and some of the concerns and disappointments they may have. I respect that because I can't expect anybody who is impacted by the exercise to fully understand the rationale as well as we will do it here. There are five principles on the basis of which we have done this: fairness, a humane approach, providing financial protection for a reasonable time, dealing with empathy and respect and fifth is continuous support. Can you share some details? On the financial side, we paid the employees an extra month or even more depending on tenure beyond whatever was their notice period, we gave leave encashment, variable pay for the cycle worked, gratuity paid as ex gratia. From a financial standpoint, we feel this was a reasonable package which was meant to protect the financial outcome for the affected employees. We realised there are uncertainties so we actually transferred a month's salary the very next day even before the full and final settlement. Outplacement agencies are offering support to 100% of the impacted workforce. They will get help for 90 days of reaching out for other opportunities including counselling for a period of time. The internal team that was set up is constantly monitoring the outreach to companies that are hiring including partner companies and companies in the start up eco system. There is on call 24/7 counselling available for employees if they want to discuss anything. We extended the medical insurance for immediate family members of employees if had they opted for that clause for a period of time. If any employee had a special situation which required an exception we made the exception. Personally a lot of effort was put in to help people. Right down from me to the last person in the organisation, if they can help the impacted employees in any way they will do it and they are doing it. There could be some cases where some process breakdown might have happened. But 99.9% of the time, this is the process followed. I don't think we have done anybody a favour. It's still not something that we feel happy about but at least when we had to do the restructuring we did it in a manner where we felt that we followed a good benchmarked approach to doing it.We are told that Oyo, on direction from SoftBank, has set internal deadlines for its self-operated hotels and ancillary businesses to turn operationally profitable. How are various businesses faring?I want to dispel the notion that SoftBank is directing us to do x or y or z. Of course, as any other shareholder, they have certain expectations. And Ritesh and the management team work along those. And they are not the only shareholders. This business is first and foremost run by the management team. And like any other normal company there is a dialogue with all stakeholders on targets for the business for the year or future years. We have no such deadlines. In businesses you have targets not deadlines. All our businesses are fairly large. Weddingz is India's largest wedding company, Oyo Life is India's largest co living company. These are by themselves sizeable businesses. There is nothing that has been disproportionately impacted because of this. At a portfolio level, there is no major restructuring where we are taking any decisions to close down any vertical completely. That's not happening.A recent article in the New York Times has alleged that the company's growth was fuelled by questionable business practices. How are you addressing this? The article has raised a few questionable claims. Rest assured that we are looking into each and every claim and stand committed to growing Oyo the right way and in a manner consistent with our values and code of conduct. The said article described behaviour that would violate our code of conduct. We will continue to improve our processes for governance and accountability. Are there any plans to raise more funds? We are well funded. Right now, the focus is on making sure the business is sustainable, well run and that it grows. How do things stand currently with the hotel partners? There have been police complaints and FIRs and allegations ranging from mismanagement of contracts to delayed payments and excessive commissions…Personally, building a strong and healthy relationship with partners is my top priority. Partner management, partner support and partner success are core to who we are. Absolutely core. If there is some angst because of financial issues, reconciliation or emotional connect, we are fully committed as the South Asia leadership to make a big change in that. It is a big agenda for us. We have always discussed any changes applicable to contracts with asset owners and have communicated timelines for complying with those changes. There is also a stream of communication that is shared with all hotel owners and there are multiple channels. But if they are saying that they are not able to reach us, then we need to get better at what we do. There are 2,000-plus asset owners who have multiple properties with us. Over 1,000 asset owners have been working consistently with us for three years. About 5,500 partners were introduced for the first time to OTAs by Oyo. These data points at this scale do not happen if the asset owner-Oyo relationship is not working. Is there scope for improvement? 100%. Can we do better? Yes, we will always try and do much better. There have also been customer complaints about quality of inventory and service…We are a company that is fairly self-critical internally. If there are things that we have not done well in some areas, we are more than eager to learn and improve. Last year, five Oyo rooms were booked every second, and there was a 2.7 times year on year jump in bookings. Our app globally has 77.5 million users. There is a lot of work that happens on customer metrics- net promoter scores, unhappy percentages… any cases of check ins denied are taken extremely seriously. I personally feel we can do a lot better. However, at the same time I do realise that a large percentage of India is our target client. It's a tremendous obligation, honour and responsibility and we will make sure we make changes everyday to get better and better.
Retirement planning can be tricky. First there is inflation eating away at your savings. Then there are unscrupulous bankers and agents, out to missell unsuitable products. Add to this the tendency to invest in traditional avenues like gold and real estate and you have all the ingredients for an unstable future. However, the silver lining are the two dedicated retirement vehicles— the humble EPF and the more recent NPS. Both are now evolving— adding new features, granting more choices and introducing flexibility in investments and withdrawals.Though the plan to allow portability between the EPF and NPS has been junked, consider how you can leverage both while planning your retirement. In this week's cover story, we focus on the changing retirement landscape and find out how you can make the most of these two instruments to ensure that your golden years are secure.EPFFor salaried individuals, the monthly contribution towards the Employee's Provident Fund remains the only forced savings mechanism. Every month, 12% of your basic salary, along with a matching contribution by your employer, flows into the EPF account. From the employer's contribution, 8.33% goes into a pension vehicle—the Employee's Pension Scheme (EPS). Not only is the contribution eligible for tax benefits under Section 80C, both the interest earned and money received on superannuation is tax-free.The EPF ensures your contributions keep rising steadily, in line with rise in salary. Since the contribution is a fixed proportion of the basic, the outgo rises in step with your income. This facet is critical for building a sizeable retirement corpus. However, to really benefit from the EPF, you should consider the following points:Hold account till retirementMany dip into the EPF corpus to meet short-term needs. Recent changes in withdrawal rules have perhaps made matters easier. Partial early withdrawal from EPF is now permitted for a child's marriage, higher education and making a down payment for a house, subject to conditions (see table). Members are also allowed to withdraw the entire amount if they remain unemployed for more than two months.EPF now fetches a much higher rate relative to PPF and other avenues 73352746 While a certain degree of flexibility can be a relief in a genuine crisis, experts say you should not touch the EPF money until retirement. The essence of the EPF lies in letting compounding work its magic. The corpus, if allowed to build up with incremental contributions each year, can reap huge benefits in the long run. For instance, an individual with a basic salary of Rs 15,000 and 30 years left for retirement can attain a corpus of Rs 60.75 lakh at the age of 58, assuming a 5% yearly rise in contribution. If the corpus is withdrawn partially in the accumulation phase, it takes away the compounding benefits accrued over years. Suresh Sadagopan, Founder, Ladder 7 Financial Advisories, says, "EPF is a retirement vehicle. Abusing the withdrawal flexibility during the accumulation phase will hurt one's retirement phase." Even if your PF becomes dormant due to job loss, maintain the account as interest will be payable on the balance until the age of 58.Enhance contribution via VPFSome recommend enhancing the contribution beyond the mandatory 12% through the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF). The VPF is an extension of the EPF that allows you to invest beyond the 12% threshold while providing the same tax benefits and return. While the PPF carries an investment limit of Rs 1.5 lakh per annum, there is no such restriction on VPF. Besides, unlike PPF returns that fluctuate in line with 10-year government bond yield, the interest rate on VPF is the same as that of the EPF. The current interest rate of 8.65% is much higher than that of PPF's 7.9%.Hiking PF contribution will obviously mean lesser take home pay. However, experts contend that having a little less spending power now could mean more financial stability later. Says Tanwir Alam, Founder & MD, Fincart, "If you are close to retirement, consider enhancing contribution through VPF. At this stage, don't take the risk of equities to achieve a bigger corpus." Younger contributors must remember that VPF comes with withdrawal restrictions. The money is locked in till retirement or until the time you leave the job. Besides, any ramp up in PF contribution should be done with broader portfolio asset allocation in mind. Sadagopan argues, "If you are over-exposed to debt as per your asset allocation, do not invest more in PF. Instead, opt for instruments with a greater wealth creating potential like equities." Young savers would be better off opting for a higher equity component through the NPS or equity funds rather than enhancing their debt allocation through VPF.Rollover account with jobsWhen changing jobs, transfer your existing EPF balance to the new employer. Withdrawing the accumulated balance is a strict no no. There are several downsides if the amount is not transferred or withdrawn and is kept idle. First, it could increase your tax liability. Even after you leave the job, the account continues to fetch interest until it becomes inoperative upon retirement. This accrued interest component becomes taxable, even if you do not withdraw money from the account.Further, if the balance is not transferred, the five year continuous service clause for tax exemption is reset to the starting date of the new account, points out Kuldip Kumar, ED, Tax & Regulatory Services, PWC. Any withdrawal within a few years of job change may become taxable even if you have completed five years of continued service spread over the two employers. Failure to transfer EPF balance also means that previous employment stints will not be counted towards pension eligibility upon retirement under the EPS. An individual is eligible for pension benefit once he has completed 10 years in service. Also read: How to transfer your EPF account onlineMoreover, the EPF account transfer, if not done within 3 years after leaving a job, becomes a tedious process. Therefore, ensure the accounts are clubbed for continued capital appreciation. Rohit Shah, Founder and CEO, Getting You Rich, says, "Be meticulous in following up with your previous employer and the EPFO about the transfer." While the Universal Account Number (UAN) remains the same across EPF accounts, it is not the same as balance transfer. The National Pension System (NPS)When the NPS first became available to the general public more than 10 years ago, it was plagued by rigid rules and a tax- unfriendly structure. In recent years, this dedicated pension offering has evolved to become more tax efficient, offering more flexibility and options. At the same time, it continues to be the lowest cost offering, despite multiple layers of charges. The NPS now permits deployment of up to 75% of the corpus in equities, giving it the potential for faster wealth creation over the longterm. The EPF on the other hand currently invests only 15% of the incremental corpus into equities. Here is how you can make the most of the NPS:Get multiple tax benefitsWhile capital gains from equity funds now face 10% tax above the Rs 1 lakh threshold, taxability of NPS is gradually moving in the opposite direction. Earlier, only 40% of the 60% accumulated corpus allowed to be withdrawn as lumpsum at the time of retirement was tax free. The remaining 20% was taxed at normal rates. Now, the entire 60% is tax free. The balance 40% still has to be compulsorily put into an annuity, which is subjected to tax. NPS thus falls somewhere between the EEE and EET (exempt-exempt-taxable) regime. While some find the mandatory annuity restrictive, it may be a blessing. By putting the subscriber onto a forced annuity, it ensures that people don't dip into the retirement corpus for other goals or spend it recklessly. Sumit Shukla, CEO, HDFC Pension Funds, argues, "The annuity component actually takes care of longevity risk by making sure retirees don't eat into the corpus quickly."NPS Auto choice option sharply cuts equity allocation from early on 73352824 NPS subscribers can claim tax benefits under different heads (see chart). Investments are eligible for deduction under Section 80CCD(1) with an overall ceiling of Rs 1.5 lakh under Section 80C. Self-employed persons can claim deduction on contribution up to 20% of their gross income, subject to the maximum limit of Rs 1.5 lakh. This apart, both salaried and self-employed can claim additional deduction of up to Rs 50,000 under Section 80CCD (1B). In the 30% tax bracket, this means additional tax savings of Rs 15,600. Together, subscribers can claim deduction up to Rs 2 lakh for contributions towards NPS.There is more. Subscribers can bring down tax liability further if their employer puts up to 10% of their basic in the NPS under Section 80CCD(2). There is no upper limit for this deduction. If your basic is Rs 50,000 per month and you are in the 30% bracket, you can cut your tax outgo by almost Rs 18,720 if your company contributes 10% of basic in the NPS. Planners say if the employer offers NPS as part of the package, salaried persons should not miss out on the opportunity. Shah suggests, "If you are not disciplined in savings, avail of the multiple windows afforded by the NPS."NPS Active choice allows for higher equity exposure until later years 73352831 Beyond tax savingsDon't invest in NPS for tax benefits alone. For instance, putting aside Rs 50,000 per year in NPS for the additional tax benefit may not add much to your retirement corpus. Placing a limit creates an artificial ceiling for your savings. Besides, it will deprive you of adequate pension benefits.A 30 year old putting aside Rs 50,000 per year—in monthly installments—into NPS would effectively accumulate a corpus of around Rs 93 lakh at 60, assuming 10% annualised returns. However, you cannot deploy the entire Rs 93 lakh upon retirement. About 40% of this— Rs 37 lakh— will go towards compulsory annuity. At current annuity rates of 6%, this corpus would fetch a monthly pension of around Rs 18,600. In all likelihood, annuity rates at that time will be much lower, implying even lower pension. This will hardly suffice for most individuals. Experts say make NPS one of the cornerstones of your retirement planning, along with other avenues like EPF and equity funds. Says Shah, "Instead of opting for NPS purely for tax benefits, take a holistic view of your portfolio for a better sense of your requirement."Multiple benefits under NPS allow sizeable tax savings 73352838 At times, your requirement may even be much lower than what you are putting aside. Persons with an already beefed up retirement portfolio may not need to put aside put a large sum in NPS. You may end up unnecessarily locking up money for a long time purely for tax considerations.Use switches judiciouslyIn a previous avatar, the NPS only allowed fund managers to take pure passive exposure to equities via index funds. Now, however, the NPS permits active fund management. This is to potentially deliver market beating returns to the subscriber. However, with active investment comes the element of human bias and judgment. Your investment experience would depend on the execution capabilities of the fund manager, apart from the vagaries of the market itself.Given this added variable, it is critical that NPS subscribers choose the fund manager carefully and keep monitoring the performance. If the selected fund manager lags behind others, you can switch to another fund manager. NPS now allows two switches in a year, without any tax incidence. However, subscribers should not abuse this flexibility by constantly changing fund managers, says Alam. Shift only if underperformance persists over three or more years. Likewise, NPS also permits subscribers up to two switches in asset allocation in a year. Use this flexibility in moderation. Avoid shifting asset mix in response to market fluctuations. Remember that the NPS automatically rebalances the portfolio according to your chosen asset mix.Opt for active choice for greater controlThe NPS offers subscribers the choice of two investing modes—Active choice and Auto choice (see table). Under Active choice, you can choose your own asset mix, deciding the split between equity, corporate bonds and government bonds. Otherwise, you can opt for lifecycle funds where the asset mix changes automatically as the individual grows older. Three life cycle funds—aggressive, moderate and conservative—cater to investors with different risk appetites. The gradual decline in equity exposure protects the corpus against volatility as retirement nears. However, auto choice can get restrictive as this moderation in equity exposure begins too early. Whatever your risk profile, the exposure starts coming down from age 36. Even for a subscriber who opts for 'aggressive' option for higher equity exposure, the allocation reduces sharply from 75% up to age 35 to 55% by the time he hits 40 and further to 35% by age 45. With 15-20 years still to go for retirement, experts feel this could be a missed opportunity for the subscriber. A common rule of thumb suggests that individuals should hold a percentage of stocks equal to 100 minus their age. So, for a typical 45-year-old, roughly 55% of the portfolio should ideally be in equities.Investors who have a fair understanding of the market should opt for the Active choice model, planners say. "Auto choice is for lazy investors. Those who are planning their finances carefully should take the Active route," suggests Harsh Roongta, a Sebi registered investment adviser. Assuming you are already contributing to EPF, your NPS asset mix should have a high-equity bias initially. Only those who are adequately invested in equity funds as part of their retirement portfolio may consider a more conservative approach.Reduced PF contributionReports suggest the government is considering giving employees the flexibility to reduce their PF contribution, currently pegged at 12%. Allowing lower PF contribution is aimed at enhancing your take home pay. However, experts feel such a move will dilute the forced savings nature of the vehicle and compromise your nest egg. For instance, for a 30-year-old earning a basic salary of Rs 30,000 a month, if the contribution is reduced from 12% to 10%, the retirement corpus will shrink from a potential Rs 92 lakh to Rs 76 lakh by the time he retires. Besides, lower contribution to EPF will mean less tax benefit. Financial planners say you should maintain the contribution at 12% at the very least.SWP in place of annuityAt present, NPS subscribers on retirement have to compulsorily buy taxable annuities from insurance companies using 40% of the accumulated corpus. However, the high cost and low yield of these annuities is perceived as a hindrance. Reports suggest the government is considering a proposal to introduce systematic withdrawal plans (SWP) as a more efficient alternative to annuities. In mutual funds, a SWP allows the investor to define a fixed sum to be withdrawn from the scheme at regular intervals for a defined period of time or until the amount gets depleted. The amount in the scheme continues to fetch return till it is completely withdrawn. All retirement oriented products launched by mutual funds offer the SWP facility. Experts say this benefit should be extended to NPS subscribers. Subscribers should be allowed to hold on to the NPS even after the retirement (currently allowed until age 70) and then permit SWPs. This will allow subscribers the freedom to pull out money in a staggered manner as per their needs rather than being locked on to interest rates offered by an insurer. At the same time, it will prevent them from squandering the corpus. Investors may also be able to limit tax incidence under the SWP, as tax may only be levied on the interest component.
KOLKATA: The country's billionplus mobile users may have to brace for more sharp jumps in phone bills by end-2020 itself with telcos likely to raise prices by another 25-30% with average revenue per user (ARPU) still low and overall telecom-related consumer spends in India amongst the lowest globally, industry executives and analysts said.Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, staring at huge payouts after they got no relief from the Supreme Court on their adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, would need to raise prices in a bid to rebuild financial strength. And, if Vodafone Idea were to collapse, as feared by some, analysts expect big price hikes from Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio Infocomm in a private duopoly structure."With Arpus still well below the Rs 180-200 pre-Jio levels and a reduction in overall telecom-related consumer spending (as a percentage of GDP) over the past three years, there's adequate scope for telcos to raise tariffs by another 30% later this year," Sanjiv Bhasin, director at IIFL Securities, told ET.Analysts expect private telcos to leverage the fall in consumer-level telecom spends to 0.73% of GDP in the September quarter of FY20 from 1.25% just over three years ago, saying the scenario offers adequate headroom to push through a second round of price hikes.Just over a month ago, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio had increased bundled prepaid tariffs by 14-33% for the first time in three years. That is estimated to boost monthly APRU from the present Rs 120 level to around Rs 160, over a few quarters. But with Vodafone Idea's survival now in the balance if it fails to also secure any meaningful relief from the government, analysts expect the tariff hikes to happen quicker.73411052 "Even after the recent tariff hike (in December 2019), consumers are still paying a paltry 0.86% of per capita income for their communication needs, which is much lower than what it was four years ago," said Rajan Mathews, director general of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which represents Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea.Analysts said consumer spends on communications in India are well below Singapore, Malaysia, China/Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan, Australia, the US, the UK, Germany and France.Given that mobile internet consumption has soared over the past three years since Jio's entry, mobile users, Bhasin said, also "won't mind paying a little extra as data is now the new gold".Kotak Institutional Equities said that aggregate annualised consumer-level telecom spends for the September 2019 quarter at Rs 1.45 lakh crore was 21% below June 2016 levels of Rs 1.84 lakh crore. MUMBAI: Luxury-vehicle maker Audi's sales in India may have fallen in 2019, but the German brand's performance in the used-car market in the past year has been the best ever with growth of 11%.The Audi Approved Plus — its used-car division that also sells the vehicles of other luxury brands — is eyeing 50% growth in 2020, even as the head of the company, Balbir Singh Dhillon, expects the market for new luxury cars to stay flat.Speaking on the sidelines of an event to launch the new Q8 in Mumbai, Dhillon said: "While the mainstream luxury-car market is facing a challenge, there is strong traction in the usedcar segment. Our used car division, Audi Approved Plus, has registered growth of over 30% in 2019 (for Audi brand alone, it was 11%); we expect this strong growth momentum to sustain in 2020."The division sold about 2,000 cars in 2019 and Dhillon sees this growing to 3,000 units this year. This will come on the back of a near doubling in the number of dealers under the division, to 15 by the end of 2020.Through the used-car division, Audi is securing a lot of first-time buyers and many of them are young, Dhillon said. The company hopes to convert them into prospective buyers for the new car division."Not only the Audi Approved Plus offers new leads for future customers, but it is also a profitable business for our dealers, so it is a win-win for us. It will be a key pillar for us to deliver sustainable business," Dhillon said.Audi India closed 2019 with sales of 4,594 new units, a decline of 28% from the previous year.

MUMBAI: The initial trend in the third-quarter results of a sample of 70 companies so far shows a double-digit growth in the aggregate net profit but a weaker single-digit growth in net sales, thereby reflecting the tax cut benefit at the bottom line amid poor demand.Aggregate net sales of the sample grew by 3.9 per cent whereas net profit increased by 15 per cent year-on-year in the December quarter. The growth numbers are likely to vary significantly with more companies reporting numbers in the coming weeks. The current trend is influenced by the performance of Reliance Industries (RIL), the country's largest company by revenue, and companies in the information technology (IT) sector. Together, they contributed more than three out of every four rupees of the sample's net sales and net profit.Amid a rally in the stock market, economic commentary looks sombre and corporates are likely to reel under the pressure of slowing demand for yet another quarter. "The third-quarter earnings-report season will be more of the same with financials driving the quarter and commodities dragging it," said Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) in a preview report. While overall trend in the topline is expected to remain weak, some analysts expect a marginal improvement in the third quarter over the previous one. "The fact that nearly half of the companies under our coverage are expected to show an improvement in yearon-year growth trajectory over Q2 (34 per cent companies showed improvement in Q2 over Q1) suggests that the improvement is broad-based," said Emkay Global in a report while estimating 0.3 per cent aggregate revenue growth for the companies it covers. 73409998 At Rs 1,56,802 crore of revenue from operations, RIL contributed nearly 47 per cent to the sample's topline. Its net profit of Rs 11,841 crore was 28 per cent of the aggregate profit. The nine IT companies that have declared results so far contributed 46 per cent to the net profit and 32 per cent to the revenue of the sample. The performance by four banks and 11 finance companies that have reported numbers so far supported the sample's growth. After excluding them from the sample, net sales shrank to just 2 per cent while profit growth decelerated to 10 per cent.Any signs of demand revival and the government's stance in the upcoming Union Budget will be crucial indicators for investors. "Corporate commentary on the underlying demand scenario and any sequential improvement post government announcements will be the key monitorables," mentioned MOFSL in the report.
By Rohit Singre Senior Technical Analyst, LKP SecuritiesWhere are we: Nifty closed a week on fresh highs at 12,352 with gains of 0.78 per cent and formed a small bullish candle on the weekly chart. In contrast, Bank Nifty failed to make fresh highs and closed the week at 31,591 zone with a loss of 1.58 per cent, forming a bearish candle on weekly chart. What is in store: Technically, Nifty touched its upper band of the channel on the weekly chart hinting that 12,400 will act as stiff resistance. If the index manages to sustain above 12,400 zone, the current up move could extend further towards 12,600 zone in the near term but if it fails to sustain, we may see some cuts towards 12,200 zone which is a strong support for the Nifty. On the options front, the highest open interest (OI) concentration is seen at 12,000 PE followed by 12,200 PE creating strong support near 12,200-12,200 zone. Any dip near these levels will be a good buying opportunity and on the higher side, the highest OI is at 12,500 CE followed by 12,400 CE hinting that 12,400-12,500 will still act as a strong hurdle for coming sessions. What could traders do: Current chart structure suggesting index has stiff resistance near 12,400 zone. If it manages to hold above 12,400 zone, we may see good move upwardsand if fails to hold it, then we may see some profit booking in the index. Some of the technical picks where traders can catch dips for 10-15 per cent in the short term and keeping stop loss levels below 5-7 per cent from the current close are Alembic Pharma, Dr Reddy's, GSPL, Sudarshan Chemical.
KOLKATA: Samsung is setting up India's first smartphone display manufacturing unit on the outskirts of Delhi. The South Korean company is investing more than Rs 3,500 crore in this facility in Noida, as per a regulatory filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). It could later be expanded to manufacture displays of other devices as well. The chaebol's flagship India entity, Samsung India Electronics, has transferred a plot to a group company, Samsung Display, in its existing manufacturing plant area and has given a loan of Rs 3,500 crore to meet the investment and working capital requirement for establishing the production unit.As per the regulatory disclosures, sourced from business intelligence platform Veratech Intelligence, Samsung India said it had incorporated a group entity, Samsung Display Noida, "with the principal business of manufacturing, assembling, processing and sales of displays (including their parts, components and accessories) for all types and sizes of electronic devices." 73410209 Samsung said the plant would produce displays of mobile phones and IT display. However, an industry executive aware of the plans said the plant would initially produce displays for mobile phones, but could later extend it to laptops and televisions. The current investment will be enhanced as the capacities increase and Samsung Display sells the component to other brands like it does globally, he said. The first phase will become operational this year itself. An email sent to Samsung India seeking comment remained unanswered till Friday press time. This fresh investment will expand Samsung's play in the component segment, with display panel being one of the largest components by value used in the manufacturing of mobile phones and televisions. It has recently started the world's largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in India, at a total outlay of Rs 4,915 crore. This enhanced investment comes at a time when the government wants to impose duties on imported displays for both smartphones and televisions to help boost its make in India efforts.Veratech Intelligence founder Mohit Yadav said Samsung's decision to invest heavily to build cellphone displays in India was a significant boost to make in India. This highlights that Samsung is confident that consumption will increase in India, he said.ET had written last year that Samsung Display wanted to set up a manufacturing unit in India and that another group entity, Samsung SDI India, was looking to start local production of smartphone batteries.Samsung India has allotted the plot to Samsung Display for a consideration of Rs 92.02 crore as per the RoC disclosures. The Rs 3,500 crore loan is for three years.
Samsung, which once led India's smartphone market, is investing $500 million in its India operations to set up a manufacturing plant at the outskirts of New Delhi to produce displays.
The company disclosed the investment and its plan in a filing to the local regulator earlier this month. The South Korean giant said the plant would produce displays for smartphones as well as a wide-range of other electronics devices.
In the filing, the company disclosed that it has allocated some land area from its existing factory in Noida for the new plant.
The new plant should help Samsung further increase its capacity to produce smartphone components locally and access a range of tax benefits that New Delhi offers.
Samsung is now the second largest smartphone player in India, which is the world's second largest market with nearly 500 million smartphone users. The company in recent months has also lost market share to Chinese brand Realme, which is poised to take over the South Korean giant in the quarter that ended in December last year, according to some analysts.
TechCrunch has reached out to Samsung for comment.
The roughly 300,000 marchers that filled the streets of downtown Los Angeles for the third annual Women’s March received more than just an opportunity to hear from some of the state’s high powered politicians, they were also part of a new experiment from local March organizers in bringing technology into the movement.
Using an organizational tool called SameSide, whose launch coincided with the Women’s March and a joint effort with RockTheVote, Women’s March organizers are hoping to transfer excitement about the march into broader political engagement with local and national women’s issues in this Presidential election year.
At the same time, the March organizers were trying to find a way to incorporate art and artists into the event, while being respectful of public spaces. That’s where a new, pre-launch application called Mark came into the picture.
Mark, a joint venture between the Danish game development firm Sybo and the Chinese mobile game publisher iDreamSky, uses augmented reality to create permanent installations of digital street art. The two year old company is still in beta, but decided to work with the Women’s March as an initial test of its product.
The company agreed to donate up to $300,000 in total, and up to $100 per person for new users who downloaded the application. Mark donated $1 per download and initial share by a user for an account created during the march. Subsequent donations will be made for consecutive days in app and multiple shares of posts made using Mark, according to the company. Login for 60 straight days and share 20 Mark AR posts and the company agreed to donate $100 to The Women’s March.
“Any movement encompasses art,” says Women’s March Los Angeles Foundation executive director Emiliana Guereca. “Social justice art and technology and the movement really melded for us. Even though it’s technology, it’s organic.”
Using Google’s persistent cloud anchors in ARCore, Mark users are able to create permanent images that can be viewed and modified through the company’s app. In Los Angeles, the company worked with American and international artists Amy Sol,Sam Kirk ,Faith XLVII, Ledania, and Fatma Al-Remaihi to create pieces that would be available at specific sites throughout the march route.
Though the Women’s March may serve as Mark’s debut, the company intends to avoid picking political sides. “We want to be as politically neutral as possible,” says Mark’s chief executive Jeff Lyndon Ko. The former founder of the publicly traded Shenzhen-based gaming publisher iDreamSky, acknowledged that his new company couldn’t work in China’s tightly controlled social media market.
“This project will have a lot more legs outside of the Greater China reach,” Ko said. As for the company’s Chinese shareholders (iDreamSky is an investor in Mark), the politics of the women’s movement in the U.S. were a foreign concept. “MyChina team was like, ‘What is that?'” Ko said.
If the collaboration with Mark was designed to inspire, the work that The Women’s March Foundation Los Angeles is doing with SameSide is intended to incite action.
A graduate of the politically focused accelerator, Higher Ground Labs, Sameside is the work of Nicole a’Beckett and her brother, a former Navy Seal. Together the two worked to create a social network that would combine political engagement and social activities to develop communities built around shared ideologies and purpose.
The company offers push notifications and reminders of important dates as well as a database of potentially engaged activists who could be organized around social events. It’s kind of like a politically focused “Meetup” with the added ability to message members about important dates and include calls to action for future activity.
“The Women’s March is the unofficial launch of SameSide, and is making the Women’s March in Los Angeles a catalyst for action by providing a platform for people everywhere to set up affiliated events — things like sign making parties, meet-up coffee parties the morning of the march, house parties for those who can’t attend a march — and delivering a voter registration action kit powered by Rock the Vote to everyone who RSVPs to any affiliated events or the Los Angeles Women’s March,” wrote a’Beckett in an email.
The Women’s March Foundation Los Angeles organizers view political engagement as a crucial next step for march participants. “There is a ‘to-do’ list after marching,” says Guereca. “The draw to Sameside is now people can plug in. How to continue the movement via your phone is critical.”
Hello and welcome back to TechCrunch's China Roundup, a digest of recent events shaping the Chinese tech landscape and what they mean to people in the rest of the world.
The spotlight this week is back on Tencent, which has made some interesting moves in gaming and content publishing. There will be no roundup next week as China observes the Lunar New Year, but the battle only intensifies for the country’s internet giants, particularly short-video rivals Douyin (TikTok’s Chinese version) and Kuaishou, which will be vying for user time over the big annual holiday. We will surely cover that when we return.
‘Honor of Kings’ creator hiring for U.S. studio
Tencent’s storied gaming studio TiMi is looking to accelerate international expansion by tripling its headcount in the U.S. in 2020, the studio told TechCrunch this week, though it refused to reveal the exact size of its North American office. Eleven-year-old TiMi currently has a team working out of Los Angeles on global business and plans to grow it into a full development studio that “helps us understand Western players and gives us a stronger global perspective,” said the studio’s international business director Vincent Gao.
Gao borrowed the Chinese expression “riding the wind and breaking the wave” to characterize TiMi’s global strategy. The wind, he said, “refers to the ever-growing desire for quality by mobile gamers.” Breaking the wave, on the other hand, entails TiMi applying new development tools to building high-budget, high-quality AAA mobile games.
The studio is credited for producing one of the world’s most-played mobile games, Honor of Kings, a mobile multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, and taking it overseas under the title Arena of Valor. Although Arena of Valor didn’t quite take off in Western markets, it has done well in Southeast Asia in part thanks to Tencent’s publishing partnership with the region’s internet giant Garena.
Honor of Kings and a few other Tencent games have leveraged the massive WeChat and QQ messengers to acquire users. That raises the question of whether Tencent can replicate its success in overseas markets where its social apps are largely absent. But TiMi contended that these platforms are not essential to a game’s success. “TiMi didn't succeed in China because of WeChat and QQ. It's not hard to find examples of games that didn't succeed even with [support from] WeChat and QQ.”
Call of Duty: Mobile is developed by Tencent and published by Activision Blizzard (Image: Call of Duty: Mobile via Twitter)
When it comes to making money, TiMi has from the outset been a strong proponent of game-as-a-service whereby it continues to pump out fresh content after the initial download. Gao believes the model will gain further traction in 2020 as it attracts old-school game developers, which were accustomed to pay-to-play, to follow suit.
All eyes are now on TiMi’s next big move, the mobile version of Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty. Tencent, given its experience in China’s mobile-first market, appears well-suited to make the mobile transition for the well-loved console shooter. Developed by Tencent and published by Blizzard, in which Tencent owns a minority stake, in September, Call of Duty: Mobile had a spectacular start, recording more worldwide downloads in a single quarter than any mobile game except Pokémon GO, which saw its peak in Q3 2016, according to app analytics company Sensor Tower.
The pedigreed studio has in recent times faced more internal competition from its siblings inside Tencent, particularly the Lightspeed Quantum studio, which is behind the successful mobile version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). While Tencent actively fosters internal rivalry between departments, Gao stressed that TiMi has received abundant support from Tencent on the likes of publishing, business development and legal matters.
WeChat erects a paywall – with Apple tax
Ever since WeChat rolled out its content publishing function — a Facebook Page equivalent named the Official Account — back in 2012, articles posted through the social networking platform have been free to read. That’s finally changing.
This week, WeChat announced that it began allowing a selected group of authors to put their articles behind a paywall in a trial period. The launch is significant not only because it can inspire creators by helping them eke out additional revenues, but it’s also a reminder of WeChat’s occasionally fraught relationship with Apple.
WeChat launched its long-awaited paywall for articles published on its platform
Let’s rewind to 2017 when WeChat, in a much-anticipated move, added a “tipping” feature to articles published on Official Account. The function was meant to boost user engagement and incentivize writers off the back of the popularity of online tipping in China. On live streaming platforms, for instance, users consume content for free but many voluntarily send hosts tips and virtual gifts worth from a few yuan to the hundreds.
WeChat said at the time that all transfers from tipping would go toward the authors, but Apple thought otherwise, claiming that such tips amounted to “in-app purchases” and thus entitled it to a 30% cut from every transaction, or what is widely known as the “Apple tax.”
WeChat disabled tipping following the clash over the terms but reintroduced the feature in 2018 after reaching consensus with Apple. The function has been up and running since then and neither WeChat nor Apple charged from the transfers, a spokesperson from WeChat confirmed with TechCrunch.
If the behemoths’ settlement over tipping was a concession on Apple’s end, Tencent has budged on paywalls this time.
Unlike tipping, the new paywall feature entitles Apple to its standard 30% cut of in-app transactions. That means transfers for paid content will go through Apple’s in-app purchase (IAP) system rather than WeChat’s own payments tool, as is the case with tipping. It also appears that only users with a Chinese Apple account are able to pay for WeChat articles. TechCrunch’s attempt to purchase a post using a U.S. Apple account was rejected by WeChat on account of the transaction “incurring risks or not paying with RMB.”
The launch is certainly a boon to creators who enjoy a substantial following, although many of them have already explored third-party platforms for alternative commercial possibilities beyond the advertising and tipping options that WeChat enables. Zhishi Xingqiu, the “Knowledge Planet”, for instance, is widely used by WeChat creators to charge for value-added services such as providing readers with exclusive industry reports. Xiaoe-tong, or “Smart Little Goose”, is a popular tool for content stars to roll out paid lessons.
Not everyone is bullish on the new paywall. One potential drawback is it will drive down traffic and discourage advertisers. Others voice concerns that the paid feature is vulnerable to exploitation by clickbait creators. On that end, WeChat has restricted the application to the function only to accounts that are over three months old, have published at least three original articles and have seen no serious violations of WeChat rules.
SpaceX demonstrated a safety system that will protect astronauts in the case of any unfortunate unforeseen accidents in future Crew Dragon flights, which included the spacecraft splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean. But during a post-mission press conference, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk suggested future return trips for the human-rated spacecraft could look very different.
Musk suggested that SpaceX could eventually seek to recover the Crew Dragon capsule using ships at sea that ‘catch’ the spacecraft as it lands, rather than allowing it to splash down and recover it from the water. SpaceX is in the process of testing a similar system to recover the fairings (large protective covers) it uses to enclose cargo during its existing Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches.
“This requires ongoing discussions with with with NASA, but I think it’d be quite quite cool to use the boats that we are using to catch the fairing,” Musk said. “Once that is really well-established, [we could attempt] to catch the catch Dragon as it’s coming in from orbit, and then that would alleviate some of the constraints around a water landing.”
This could be a major advantage for SpaceX in terms of cost and reusability of its Crew Dragon spacecraft, which it eventually hopes to be able to fly both for NASA and for other commercial clients. Still, Musk emphasized that this is a goal for considerably further out beyond Crew Dragon’s actual start of service life, since it both requires NASA’s buy-in and certification, and also requires that SpaceX actually demonstrate their ability to reliably catch the cargo fairing first. So far, it’s caught one half of one fairing, but has also had a number of failed attempts.
“We obviously need to recover [the fairing] very reliably before we we consider trying to catch the catch the Dragon,” he added. “But I think that would be also an improvement, as opposed to lightning in the water.”
SpaceX and NASA hosted a press conference following their successful test of the Crew Dragon’s in-flight abort system on Sunday to discuss the mission and next steps. The first question asked by media in attendance was about what this means for the timeline for a mission with actual crew on board, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk provided an answer sketching out a rough schedule of events.
“The hardware necessary for the first crewed launch, we believe will be ready by the end of February,” he said. “However, there’s still a lot of work once the hardware is ready to just cross-check everything, triple-check, quadruple-check, go over everything everything again until every every stone has been turned over three or four times. And then there’s also the schedule for getting to the Space Station, because the Space Station has a lot of lot of things going to it, so what’s the right timing because, and the collective wisdom at this point is that we think that hardware will be ready in q1, most likely in February, but no later than March, and that we think it appears probable that the first crewed launch would occur in the second quarter.”
NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine followed up with additional perspective from the agency’s side, noting that there could be some shifting mission parameters for that first trip that change the timing of when it actually goes up.
“I think, I think that’s a very fair assessment,” Bridenstine said. “I would also say we have to make some decisions on our end from a NASA perspective. Do we want that first crew to be a short duration, or do we want it to be a longer duration? If it’s going to be a longer duration, then we have to have some additional training for our astronauts to actually be prepared to do things on the International Space Station that we weren’t planning to have that initial test crew necessarily do.”
Bridenstine added that those decisions will be made in the “coming weeks,” and depending on whether they opt to make this first mission a quick trip, or a longer duration mission with more objectives, it could change their timing due to scheduling and training requirements for the astronauts actually going up aboard Crew Dragon.
In films, TV shows and books — and even in video games where characters are designed to respond to user behavior — we don't perceive characters as beings with whom we can establish two-way relationships. But that’s poised to change, at least in some use cases.
Interactive characters — fictional, virtual personas capable of personalized interactions — are defining new territory in entertainment. In my guide to the concept of "virtual beings," I outlined two categories of these characters:
virtual influencers: fictional characters with real-world social media accounts who build and engage with a mass following of fans.
virtual companions: AIs oriented toward one-to-one relationships, much like the tech depicted in the films “Her” and “Ex Machina.” They are personalized enough to engage us in entertaining discussions and respond to our behavior (in the physical world or within games) like a human would.
Part 2 of 3: the business of virtual influencers
Today’s discussion focuses on virtual influencers: fictional characters that build and engage followings of real people over social media. To explore the topic, I spoke with two experienced entrepreneurs:
Dylan Flinn is CEO of Shadows, an LA-based animation studio that’s building a roster of interactive characters for social media audiences. Dylan started his career in VC, funding companies such as Robinhood, Patreon and Bustle, and also spent two years as an agent at CAA.
Kevin Gould is CEO of Kombo Ventures, a talent management and brand incubation firm that has guided the careers of top influencers like Jake Paul and SSSniperWolf. He is the co-founder of three direct-to-consumer brands — Insert Name Here, Wakeheart and Glamnetic — and is an angel investor in companies like Clutter, Beautycon and DraftKings.
SpaceX completed a crucial test of a key safety system of its Crew Dragon spacecraft today. The test involved launching its Crew Dragon using a Falcon 9, though without any actual crew on board. The launch was then intentionally cut short, with the In-Flight Abort (IFA) system triggered to separate the Crew Dragon from the rocket about about a minute and a half into the launch process.
As intended, the Dragon capsule used its eight Super Draco engines to quickly move itself away from the rocket, which in a real mission would ensure the safety of the astronauts on board the vehicle in case of any unexpected failure of the rocket. The Crew Dragon’s engines can propel it half a mile in just 7.5 seconds, exerting up to 4 Gs (4x the force of Earth’s gravity) on astronauts during this acceleration.
The Crew Dragon then deployed its parachutes once it reached a safe distance, and descended to the Atlantic Ocean for splashdown, where crews are in the process of recovering the capsule. In a real emergency scenario, an elite Air Force rescue team would deploy as quickly as possible to rescue the crew, for but this demo, the recovery could take two hours or more since the main objective is recovering the capsule intact, safely.
The Falcon 9 rocket used her had flown on three previous missions, and was in fact the first booster produced as part of SpaceX’s run of human-rated variants of the Falcon 9 design. As intended, the Falcon 9 broke up once the Crew Dragon ejected, with the on-board fuel generating a pretty impressive explosion.
This isn’t the first time SpaceX has demonstrated that its Crew Dragon system is nearly ready for human flight. It performed a successful pad abort test in 2015, which demonstrated that it could cancel the launch as intended before actual liftoff, in a safe manner. The Crew Dragon’s Super Dracos were also successfully tested in November of last year with a static test fire on the ground. SpaceX also encountered a fatal error during an earlier test of the Super Draco in 2019, but subsequently identified the cause working with NASA and has made changes to ensure that fault isn’t repeated.
SpaceX also performed a full ucnrewed demo mission with Crew Dragon last year, which saw the capsule launch atop a Falcon 9, deploy to orbit, rendez-vous and dock with the International Space Station (ISS) on its own, and then return to Earth. That means it’s checked a lot of the boxes required for actually flying its first astronauts for an initial demonstration mission before it begins commercial service – and that should take place later this year.
During a press conference hosted by NASA and SpaceX following the mission, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said that the test went basically exactly to plan, which is good news for that timeline for an actual crewed launch remaining on track.
‘Overall, it was a picture perfect mission,” Musk said. “It went as well as we could possibly expect. I’m super fired up. This is great. It’s really great.’
“It all looks perfect as least as far as we’ve seen thus far,” he added later. “But we need to physically recover the spacecraft and and confirm that there’s not something that’s not an issue that that wouldn’t show up on telemetry.”
Facebook spying on teens, Twitter accounts hijacked by terrorists, and sexual abuse imagery found on Bing and Giphy were amongst the ugly truths revealed by TechCrunch’s investigating reporting in 2019. The tech industry needs more watchdogs than ever as its size enlargens the impact of safety failures and the abuse of power. Whether through malice, naivety, or greed, there was plenty of wrongdoing to sniff out.
Led by our security expert Zack Whittaker, TechCrunch undertook more long-form investigations this year to tackle these growing issues. Our coverage of fundraises, product launches, and glamorous exits only tell half the story. As perhaps the biggest and longest running news outlet dedicated to startups (and the giants they become), we’re responsible for keeping these companies honest and pushing for a more ethical and transparent approach to technology.

Here are our top 10 investigations from 2019, and their impact:
Facebook pays teens to spy on their data
Josh Constine’s landmark investigation discovered that Facebook was paying teens and adults $20 in gift cards per month to install a VPN that sent Facebook all their sensitive mobile data for market research purposes. The laundry list of problems with Facebook Research included not informing 187,000 users the data would go to Facebook until they signed up for “Project Atlas”, not receiving proper parental consent for over 4300 minors, and threatening legal action if a user spoke publicly about the program. The program also abused Apple’s enterprise certificate program designed only for distribution of employee-only apps within companies to avoid the App Store review process.
The fallout was enormous. Lawmakers wrote angry letters to Facebook. TechCrunch soon discovered a similar market research program from Google called Screenwise Meter that the company promptly shut down. Apple punished both Google and Facebook by shutting down all their employee-only apps for a day, causing office disruptions since Facebookers couldn’t access their shuttle schedule or lunch menu. Facebook tried to claim the program was above board, but finally succumbed to the backlash and shut down Facebook Research and all paid data collection programs for users under 18. Most importantly, the investigation led Facebook to shut down its Onavo app, which offered a VPN but in reality sucked in tons of mobile usage data to figure out which competitors to copy. Onavo helped Facebook realize it should acquire messaging rival WhatsApp for $19 billion, and it’s now at the center of anti-trust investigations into the company. TechCrunch’s reporting weakened Facebook’s exploitative market surveillance, pitted tech’s giants against each other, and raised the bar for transparency and ethics in data collection.
Zack Whittaker’s profile of the heroes who helped save the internet from the fast-spreading WannaCry ransomware reveals the precarious nature of cybersecurity. The gripping tale documenting Marcus Hutchins’ benevolent work establishing the WannaCry kill switch may have contributed to a judge’s decision to sentence him to just one year of supervised release instead of 10 years in prison for an unrelated charge of creating malware as a teenager.
TechCrunch contributor Mark Harris’ investigation discovered inadequate emergency exits and more problems with Elon Musk’s plan for his Boring Company to build a Washington D.C.-to-Baltimore tunnel. Consulting fire safety and tunnel engineering experts, Harris build a strong case for why state and local governments should be suspicious of technology disrupters cutting corners in public infrastructure.
Josh Constine’s investigation exposed how Bing’s image search results both showed child sexual abuse imagery, but also suggested search terms to innocent users that would surface this illegal material. A tip led Constine to commission a report by anti-abuse startup AntiToxin (now L1ght), forcing Microsoft to commit to UK regulators that it would make significant changes to stop this from happening. However, a follow-up investigation by the New York Times citing TechCrunch’s report revealed Bing had made little progress.
Natasha Lomas’ chronicle of troubles at educational computer hardware startup pi-top, including a device malfunction that injured a U.S. student. An internal email revealed the student had suffered a “a very nasty finger burn” from a pi-top 3 laptop designed to be disassembled. Reliability issues swelled and layoffs ensued. The report highlights how startups operating in the physical world, especially around sensitive populations like students, must make safety a top priority.
Sarah Perez and Zack Whittaker teamed up with child protection startup L1ght to expose Giphy’s negligence in blocking sexual abuse imagery. The report revealed how criminals used the site to share illegal imagery, which was then accidentally indexed by search engines. TechCrunch’s investigation demonstrated that it’s not just public tech giants who need to be more vigilant about their content.
Megan Rose Dickey explored a botched case of discrimination policy enforcement by Airbnb when a blind and deaf traveler’s reservation was cancelled because they have a guide dog. Airbnb tried to just “educate” the host who was accused of discrimination instead of levying any real punishment until Dickey’s reporting pushed it to suspend them for a month. The investigation reveals the lengths Airbnb goes to in order to protect its money-generating hosts, and how policy problems could mar its IPO.
Zack Whittaker discovered that Islamic State propaganda was being spread through hijacked Twitter accounts. His investigation revealed that if the email address associated with a Twitter account expired, attackers could re-register it to gain access and then receive password resets sent from Twitter. The article revealed the savvy but not necessarily sophisticated ways terrorist groups are exploiting big tech’s security shortcomings, and identified a dangerous loophole for all sites to close.
Josh Constine found dozens of pornography and real-money gambling apps had broken Apple’s rules but avoided App Store review by abusing its enterprise certificate program — many based in China. The report revealed the weak and easily defrauded requirements to receive an enterprise certificate. Seven months later, Apple revealed a spike in porn and gambling app takedown requests from China. The investigation could push Apple to tighten its enterprise certificate policies, and proved the company has plenty of its own problems to handle despite CEO Tim Cook’s frequent jabs at the policies of other tech giants.
Bonus: HQ Trivia employees fired for trying to remove CEO
This Game Of Thrones-worthy tale was too intriguing to leave out, even if the impact was more of a warning to all startup executives. Josh Constine’s look inside gaming startup HQ Trivia revealed a saga of employee revolt in response to its CEO’s ineptitude and inaction as the company nose-dived. Employees who organized a petition to the board to remove the CEO were fired, leading to further talent departures and stagnation. The investigation served to remind startup executives that they are responsible to their employees, who can exert power through collective action or their exodus.

SpaceX is looking to launch its Crew Dragon spacecraft using a Falcon 9 rocket today, in a crucial test of the human-rated spacecraft’s In-Flight Abort (IFA) system. This safety feature will separate the Crew Dragon from the Falcon 9 rocket early, propelling the spacecraft (and any astronauts who would be on board, during a real mission) to a safe distance at extremely high speed.
The test was originally scheduled for Saturday, but weather prevented that from being a workable option. Now, SpaceX’s launch window opens today at 8 AM EST (5 AM PST) and lasts for six hours. SpaceX and NASA are currently aiming for a 10:30 AM EST (7:30 AM PST) liftoff time during that window, in order to ensure that weather both for launch and for recovery of the Crew Dragon spacecraft in the Atlantic Ocean are optimal. Depending on conditions, that time could slip again, or if they exceed the launch window, push to a backup date on Monday.
SpaceX and NASA are making sure everything is as good as it can be for this mission in terms of weather conditions, so it’s subject to stricter criteria than SpaceX’s average cargo launch. This reflects what the private space company and its government agency partner would do were their actual astronauts on board, too, since astronaut safety is the number one priority to consider when performing crewed launches.
During the mission, the In-Flight Abort process is set to trigger automatically at about 84 seconds into the launch, when the rocket and its payload are roughly 60,000 feet above the Earth. In real crewed mission conditions, this would be used in case something was going wrong with the rocket, in order to give the astronauts on board the best possible chance to escape in the unlikely event of anything potentially dangerous happening like a rocket exploding within the atmosphere.
The goal here is to study the Crew Capsule, and to recover it quickly in order to gather the data that’s being collected on board, which should provide key info about what a human astronaut would’ve experienced were they inside during the IFA process. That means conditions on the ocean are pretty much as important as conditions on the launch pad, since recovery crews will be working to retrieve the capsule and NASA and SpaceX want to ensure their safety, too.
The broadcast should begin about 15 minutes prior to the target liftoff time, so currently that means 10:15 AM EST (7:15 AM PST). We’ll update this post if weather conditions cause further delays.

Scrubbies are small abrasive dishcloths that you can use to clean hard surfaces and dishes. You can knit your own scrubbies using a special type of scrubby yarn or a combination of dishcloth yarn and nylon netting. This is an easy, quick, and useful project for knitters of all levels, so make some scrubbies for yourself and your friends!
Choose a textured scrubby and/or cotton yarn. A textured scrubby yarn is ideal for making scrubbies, but you can also use a cotton yarn. Try checking online or in your local craft supply store for a textured scrubby yarn. If none is available, then opt for a cotton yarn.[1]
Red Heart has a yarn called Scrubby that is specifically for making scrubbies.
Sugar n' Cream is a popular type of cotton yarn, but you may use any brand you like.
Get a pair of knitting needles that will work with your yarn. Check the yarn label to determine what type of knitting needles will work best for the yarn you are using. This will help to ensure that you get the best possible results.
For example, a pair of US size 7 to 9 (4.5 to 5.5 mm) knitting needles will work well if you are using a medium-weight scrubby yarn.[2]
Add nylon for extra scrubbing power if desired. If you want extra texture in your scrubbies or if your yarn is not textured, then you can incorporate some nylon into your knitting. Purchase some nylon net and cut it into strands. Then, tie those strands together to make nylon yarn that you can knit into your scrubby.[3]
Check your local craft supply store for nylon net or buy some online.
Hold 2 strands together for a thicker scrubby. If you want a thick durable scrubby, then knit with 2 strands of scrubby yarn at once. Another option is to hold 1 piece of scrubby or nylon yarn and 1 piece of cotton yarn as you knit. However, you may also knit with 1 strand of scrubby or nylon yarn to make your scrubby.
If you are working with a single ball of scrubby yarn, then divide the ball into 2 equal-sized balls before you get started.
If you are using nylon to add texture to the scrubby, the hold 1 strand of nylon yarn with 1 strand of cotton yarn to knit the scrubby.
Make a slipknot. Loop the yarn around your index and ring finger twice, and pinch the intersection of 2 loops (where the loops begin and end). Slip the loops off your fingers while pinching this section, and then bring the second loop over the first loop. Tug on the tail-end of the yarn to tighten the loop slightly. Slide the loop onto your right-hand needle and tug on the tail to tighten it further.[4]
This slipknot counts as your first cast on stitch.
Cast on 15 stitches. Loop the yarn over the left-hand needle and insert the right-hand needle into the loop. Yarn over the right-hand needle and pull through to create your second cast on stitch. Keep casting on until you have a total of 15 stitches.[5]
If desired, you may cast on more or fewer stitches than 15 to create a different size scrubby.
Knit across the first row. To knit, insert the right-hand needle through the first stitch on the left-hand needle going from front to back. Then, loop the yarn over the end of the right-hand needle and pull this new loop through the old loop, and then let the old loop slide off the end of the left-hand needle.[6]
Repeat this sequence all the way to the end of the row.
Turn your work and continue knitting. Switch the right-hand needle with all of the stitches on it to your left hand, and place the empty needle in your right hand. Then, continue knitting across this new row. By turning your work after each row, you will be working in the garter stitch. This stitch has a little stretch and texture to it.[7]
Continue to knit until the scrubby is the desired size. After you finish casting on, knit across the first row and then continue knitting all of the rows until the scrubby is the desired size. A good scrubby size is about , which is roughly 22 rows.[8]
You can measure your scrubby when it looks like it is close to the desired size, but you can also just guess. Scrubbies do not need to be perfect since you will just be using them to scrub counters and dishes.
Bind off the last row. To finish your scrubby, you will need to bind off the stitches. Start by knitting the first 2 stitches in the row. Then, use the left-hand needle to lift the first stitch on the right-hand needle over the second stitch. Then, knit 1 and use the left-hand needle to lift the first 1 up and over the second 1 again.[9]
Keep doing this to the end of the row to bind off all the stitches.
After binding off the last stitch, tie a knot through it and cut the excess yarn.
Just like humans, cats sometimes struggle with anxiety. If you notice your feline friend acting nervous, irritable, aggressive, or clingy, this may indicate that it's anxious. You may be able to help by offering an enriching, low-stress environment. If your cat's anxiety is new or severe, make an appointment with your vet to discuss possible causes and treatment options. It may not always be obvious if your cat is anxious, so get familiar with common signs of anxiety in cats if you're not sure how your companion might be feeling.
Offer places for your cat to perch and hide. Avoid trying to give the cat attention as it may interpret this as a sign of aggression. Back off and allow the cat to do what it needs to do to feel safe, even if that means hiding away for a while. Provide your cat with furniture to help it feel more secure, such as a cat tree with perching platforms and built-in "apartments." Upside down cardboard boxes with a couple of holes cut into the sides also make good hiding spots. If your cat doesn't feel like it has a safe space to retreat to when things get stressful, it may feel anxious and overwhelmed.[1]
Your cat may also appreciate having a designated area in the home where it can get away from other pets or children. For example, if you have a utility room, you could put a litter box and cat bed there and put a baby gate in the doorway to keep your dog out.
Cats also enjoy having high places where they can safely survey the world around them from above.[2] You may want to clear a pathway for your cat that's up off the ground, such as along a shelf or along the back of a couch.
Give your cat safe areas to eat, sleep, and use the litter box. Your cat needs to feel secure while it is doing basic functions like eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom. Place your cat's food dishes, litter box, and bedding in low-traffic areas where it won't be harassed by other pets or kids.[3]
For example, if your dog tries to pester your cat at mealtimes, try putting your cat's food and water in an area the dog can't reach, such as on a countertop or cat tree.
Provide toys for your cat to keep it busy. Cats are natural predators that need to engage in stalking and hunting behaviors to feel fulfilled and happy. To keep your cat from getting anxious and bored, provide a variety of toys and other forms of entertainment. Try to offer enrichment items that make your home more like the cat's natural environment. Some good options include:[4]
Puzzle feeders to make mealtimes more fun and enriching.
Moving toys, like windup mice or robotic bugs, that your cat can chase.
Fishing rod toys, feather wands, or laser pointers for interactive play.
Fun things for your cat to watch, like fish tanks, bird feeders located outside your windows, or footage of fish, birds, or bugs on your TV.
Cat-safe plants, like potted cat grass or catnip.
Make sure your cat has scratching posts. Cats need to scratch to maintain their claws, but they also do it to mark their territory and relieve excitement or nervous energy.[5] To keep your cat from feeling anxious or engaging in destructive scratching, provide at least one scratching post or horizontal scratching surface.
You can buy a scratching post or board scratcher from a pet supply store, or make your own scratching post.
Pay attention to whether your cat prefers to scratch while standing upright or down on all fours. Choose an upright scratching post or a horizontal scratching board based on your cat's preferences.
Cats like to scratch right after they wake up, so place a scratcher near your cat's sleeping area. You can also place a scratcher near furniture or other objects you don't want your cat to scratch.
Ignore your cat unless it's asking for attention. This may seem counterintuitive, but one good way to calm an anxious cat is to act as if it isn't there at all. Instead of trying to soothe your cat or sneak around quietly when it's acting timid or scared, go about your business as usual. This will help your cat feel more at ease and less like it is the center of attention.[6]
Don't make direct eye contact with your cat, talk to it, or try to touch it unless it approaches you first.
If your cat does approach you, reward the behavior with praise, treats, or gentle petting.
Getting down on the cat's level can also make you seem less intimidating, such as by kneeling or even lying on the floor. Avoid looking down at the cat while standing up.
Use treats to bond with your anxious cat. Treats can help your cat build positive associations with you and its environment. Try offering treats to reward your cat when it approaches you or behaves calmly. You can also put treats around to encourage your cat to explore and get comfortable with the different parts of your home.[7]
If your cat is nervous about coming near you, try placing a treat in the palm of your hand. Sit quietly with your hand outstretched and see if the cat will come and take the treat from you.
If the cat is too anxious to get close to you, try tossing a treat to it at a distance. As your cat gets more comfortable, you can toss the treat closer to you.
See your vet to rule out any underlying medical problems. Sometimes anxious behaviors can be a sign of a more serious physical condition. If you're worried about your cat's behavior or haven't had any luck with adjusting your cat's home environment, talk to your vet. They can give your cat an exam and try to determine what's going on.[8]
Many common signs of anxiety, such as irritability, changes in appetite, or urinating outside the litter box, may also be symptoms of illness in cats.
Let your vet know when the behaviors started and if you've noticed any other symptoms.
If your vet can't find any physical cause for your cat's symptoms, they may refer you to a feline behavior specialist.
Try a pheromone spray in your cat's living areas. A pheromone spray, such as Feliway, mimics the soothing scents that cats produce naturally from their facial glands. Your vet may recommend spraying a pheromone spray around your cat's living and sleeping areas or placing a diffuser in rooms where your cat spends time.[9]
You can purchase pheromone sprays and diffusers online or from pet supply stores, such as Pet Remedy.[10] You may also be able to buy these products directly from your vet's office.
You can also buy "calming collars" that are saturated with synthetic pheromones. Place one of these on your cat like an ordinary collar so that it can smell the calming pheromones at all times.
If you use a diffuser or calming collar, check the instructions to find out how often it needs to be replaced.
Ask your vet about using anti-anxiety medications. If your cat has severe anxiety and other treatment approaches don't work, your vet may prescribe an anti-anxiety medication for your cat. Follow your vet's directions for administering the medication, and don't hesitate to reach out to them if you have any questions or concerns.[11]
Most anti-anxiety medications work by adjusting the balance of natural feel-good chemicals, such as serotonin and dopamine, in your cat's brain.
You may need to give the medication for a few weeks before you notice a major difference in your cat's behavior.
Let your vet know if your cat experiences side effects, such as vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or difficulty urinating.
Discuss using a calming supplement for your cat. While there are numerous supplements on the market that claim to treat anxiety in cats, there's not always a lot of evidence for their effectiveness. Before trying a supplement, ask your vet to recommend one that may be safe and effective for your cat. Some supplements that may help include:[12]
Milk proteins, such as casein or alpha-casozepine. You can get prescription foods or tablets that contain these proteins.
L-theonine, an amino acid found naturally in tea.
Cat-safe botanical extracts, such as Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense.
Melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep patterns and reduce stress.
Tryptophan, an amino acid that helps stimulate the production of serotonin.
Watch for withdrawal and hiding behaviors. Many anxious cats will run from people and spend a lot of their time hiding. If you hardly ever see your cat, or if it gets skittish and runs away when you try to approach or touch it, that's a good sign that your cat is feeling anxious.[13]
Your cat may retreat under the bed or hide in a high place, such as the top of a wardrobe or even your refrigerator.
Make note of your cat being extra clingy. While some cats react to anxiety by hiding, others won't leave your side. If your cat won't stop following you around and pestering you for attention, that may be a sign that it is feeling anxious.[14]
Some cats suffer from separation anxiety, and may become restless and destructive when you leave them alone.
Keep an eye out for changes in appetite. If your cat starts eating more or less than usual, this can also be a symptom of anxiety. Keep an eye on your cat's food habits and pay attention to any changes.[15]
Listen for unusual vocalizations. An anxious cat may yowl, cry, or meow more than usual. Listen for meowing at unusual times, like the middle of the night.[16]
Like many other symptoms of anxiety in cats, this behavior can also be a sign of a physical illness. For example, yowling at night can be a symptom of a thyroid condition.[17]
Notice aggressive behaviors. Cats that are anxious may become irritable and lash out at humans or other pets in the home.[18] While it may seem like your cat is being "mean," aggressive behaviors often signal that your cat is feeling stressed and fearful.
Always consult your vet if you notice sudden or unusual aggressive behavior from your cat.
Check for problems with using the litter box. Urinating of defecating outside the litter box are common signs of stress or anxiety in cats. In particular, cats that are anxious may spray urine in inappropriate places to try to mark their territory.[19]
If you notice your cat having litter box issues, contact your vet. These behaviors may also mean that your cat is sick. For example, a cat that urinates outside the litter box could have a urinary tract infection.
Be mindful of changes in grooming. An anxious cat may neglect its coat, causing it to appear dirty or scruffy.[20] On the other hand, your anxious cat might also overgroom itself, leading to bald or stubbly patches and skin sores.[21] Call your vet if you notice changes in your cat's grooming behaviors, since these can be signs of either behavioral or physical problems.
For example, a scruffy coat, bald patches, or skin sores can also be signs that your cat has a flea allergy.
Your vet may be able to prescribe short-term anxiety medications or sedatives to reduce anxiety in high-stress situations, such as a move, a long plane or car ride, or a vet visit.
If you notice changes in your cat's behavior, try to think of possible triggers, such as the addition or loss of a pet or human family member in the household, or unusual noise or activity in your home.
Most of the symptoms of anxiety in cats can also be signs of pain, injury, or illness. Don't assume your cat is anxious just because it displays some or all of the common symptoms of anxiety.
Be patient with your cat. Getting angry at it or trying to force it to overcome its anxious behaviors too quickly will only make your cat feel more stressed and fearful.[22]
Learning how to play the guitar can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. If you're just starting off, it's important that you practice specific techniques before trying to tackle an entire song. First, you'll need to learn how to strum single notes on the guitar. Then, you should learn how to play basic power chords. Once you get those techniques down, you can play songs by reading tabs or you can reinforce what you know with books or professional instruction.
Purchase or borrow a guitar. Decide whether you want to learn on an acoustic or electric guitar. Acoustic guitars don't require an amp or cords, so they are easier to set up when you're first starting. On the other hand, electric guitars are often easier on your fingertips, which may enable you to practice for a longer period of time. Determine what kind of starter guitar you want based on your budget and the equipment that you already have access to.[1]
Guitars with nylon strings are often easier to use at first than guitars with metal strings.
It's best to start on a 6 string guitar rather than an 8 string guitar.
Classical guitar strings are higher on the fretboard, which makes it tougher to create clear sounds and is harsher on your fingertips.
Tune your guitar to standard tuning with an electric tuner. In standard tuning, your strings should be set to E, A, D, G, B, E, starting from the top string. Turn on the electric tuner and hold it next to your guitar. Then, strum the top string. Adjust the knob connected to the top string until the tuner reads an E. Move down to the second string from the top and adjust the knobs until it's an A. Continue this process on the rest of the strings until your guitar matches standard tuning.[2]
Before you start playing, your guitar must be in tune or it won't sound good when you play it.
Standard tuning is what most beginners use.
The bottom string, or E, is an octave above the top string but is still the same note.
Place the guitar in your lap and hold the neck with your left hand. Sit down in a chair, straighten your back and square your shoulders. Place the guitar on your right thigh so that it sits comfortably in your lap. If you're left-handed and are using a left-handed guitar, you'll place the guitar on your left thigh and hold the neck with your right hand.[3]
The body of the guitar should be resting against your torso.
Use a guitar strap if you don't feel like sitting down.
Hold down the first fret on the top string. The frets are the square spaces on the neck of the guitar that are divided by small metal strips. Hold down the first fret of the top string with the tip of your index or middle finger. Your palm should be facing up and your fingers should be bent as you hold down the fret.[4]
Your fingers should be pressing down the strings in the middle of the fret, not on the metal strip.
Pluck the top string with a pick and listen to the sound. Hold the pick between your index finger and thumb in your right hand. Move the pick over the top string to make a sound. If the string sounds muted or unclear, press down harder on the fret with your left hand. Continue strumming the top string until the note sounds clear.[5]
A metronome may help you stay on beat.
Move your left hand down the fretboard to play different notes. Move your hand from the first fret to the second fret. Try strumming and making a clear sound. Then, alternate playing the first and second fret. Try to stay on a specific beat and continue switching back and forth between the first and second fret as you strum. Once you feel comfortable alternating between frets, you can experiment with strumming different notes on the neck of the guitar.[6]
As you get used to playing single notes, you'll build up the muscle memory that will help you locate specific frets without looking at the guitar.
Play different frets on the 5th string. Pluck the 5th string, or the 2nd string from the top string, without holding any frets to play an A note. If you want to play a B note, hold down the second fret on the 5th string. You can practice alternating between the 5th and 6th string to see how it sounds.[7]
Experiment with notes on the 4th string. Strum the 4th string in the open position, or without holding down any frets, to play D note. If you want to play an E, hold down the second fret on the string. This note is the same note as the top string when played open but at a higher octave, or tone.
You can play other notes down the neck on the 4th string.
Strum notes on the 3rd string. The 3rd string, or G string, is the third string from the bottom or 4th string from the top. Hold down the 2nd fret to play an A and then 4th fret to play a B. Alternate between the two notes to create a basic beat. Then, play the 5th fret to switch to a C note.[8]
Play higher notes on the 2nd and 1st strings. Playing the bottom 2 strings, or the 1st and 2nd string, will result in notes at a high octave. These strings are usually played during solos are help make up different chords. Practice playing the 1st and 2nd strings as you did on the rest of the strings.[9]
Hold down the first fret on the top string with your index finger. A power chord is a simple chord that's popular in rock music and is comprised of 2 notes. To start the shape of the chord, press down on the first fret of guitar on the top string, or 6th string, to form the first note in the power chord.[10]
The root note is the note that your index finger is on. Since your holding down the first fret on the top string, this power chord is an F.
The strings go in sequential order, starting from the bottom, or 1st string, and going to to the top, or 6th string.
Hold down the third fret on the 5th string with your ring finger. To complete the chord, hold down the third fret on the second string from the top, or 5th string, while holding down the first fret of the top string. It may take some practice to hold down both strings at the same time.[11]
This is known as the power chord shape and can be replicated anywhere on the 5th and 6th string of the fretboard.
Strum both strings to play the chord. Strum the 6th and 5th strings on the guitar to play the F power chord. It should sound clear and the string's individual notes should come together for a full chord. Play the chord several times until your hands feel comfortable in the position.[12]
Do not strum the other 4 strings because the chord won't sound good.
Move your hand down 2 frets to play the G power chord. Move your left hand down 2 frets, or one whole step, to play the G power chord. Keep the same shape that you did when you held down the first and third fret, but this time hold down the third and fifth frets. Alternate between the F and G power chord to create a melody.[13]
Use the same shape down the neck to play other power chords. You can play power chords almost anywhere on the 5th or 6th strings. For instance, hold down the second fret of the 5th string and the fourth fret on the 4th string to play a B power chord. Hold that same position and slide your hand down a half step, or 1 fret, to play a C power chord. You can do this on any position on the 5th and 6th string.[14]
Refer to a note chart if you're unsure of what power chord you're playing.
A progression is when you play a series of notes or chords together to form a melody or song.
Take guitar lessons from an instructor. A professional instructor will be able to teach you advanced techniques and music theory that can develop your guitar-playing skills. Learn how to read and play guitar tabs. Guitar tabs are a simple way to learn how to position your hand to play certain tunes. The number on the tabs represent the fret that you should play, while the lines on the tabs represent the string that you'll play the note on. Tabs put the top string, or 6th string, on the bottom line, the 5th string on the second to bottom line, and so on.[17]
Tabs do not designate how long to hold a note or chord, so you'll have to listen to the song that you want to play as you learn it.
For instance, if the tab had 1-1-1 on the top line of the tab, that would mean that you strum the bottom string, or 1st string, 3 times in a row.
Cover songs that you enjoy. The easiest way to play popular songs is to use guitar tabs. Look up the tablature for the song that you want to play, then practice perfecting it. Start off by playing simple songs that only have a few notes and chords, then advance to more elaborate songs with many different parts.[18]
Playing other people's songs will teach you popular chords and progressions.
There are two kinds of foods that help balance your gut: prebiotics and probiotics. You can get both through a healthy diet. However, if you're still having digestive trouble, you might want to consider adding a supplement. Keep in mind that everyone's gut will react differently to different kinds of foods. Instead of trying to stick to strict rules, find a diet that works well for you and makes your gut feel good.
Opt for a mostly plant-based diet. Animal products can irritate the gut and kill good bacteria. On the other hand, plant-based foods act like fertilizer for good bacteria and create a healthy environment for good bacteria to grow in. You don't need to be a vegetarian or vegan to increase good bacteria, but adding more fruits, vegetables, and legumes to your diet can help.[1]
Plant-based foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and legumes.
Include plenty of prebiotic foods in your daily diet. Prebiotic foods promote the growth of good bacteria in your gut. Eating prebiotic foods is essential to maintaining a balance between good and bad bacteria. Try to include a prebiotic food into every meal.[2]
Some of the best prebiotic foods include oats, asparagus, dandelion greens, leeks, garlic, bananas, onions, apples, flaxseed, and cocoa.
Eat 25-30 g of fiber every day. Fiber feeds healthy bacteria and promotes good digestion. Get a mix of soluble and insoluble fibers. Soluble fiber helps produce stool and could lower cholesterol. Insoluble fiber helps move food through the intestines.[3]
Some good sources of soluble fibers include: fruits like apples, oranges, and grapefruit; vegetables; legumes like lentils, dry beans, and peas; barley; oats; and oat bran.
Some good sources of insoluble fiber include: fruits with edible peels or seeds; whole-wheat bread, pasta, and crackers; bulgur wheat; corn meal; cereal; bran; rolled oats; buckwheat; and brown rice.
Add more fermented foods to your diet. Naturally fermented foods are one of the best natural sources for probiotics, and they help introduce good bacteria into your gut. There are no guidelines for how much fermented food you should eat to see the benefits, so add in as much fermented food to your diet as you can.[4]
Good sources of fermented foods include sauerkraut, kombucha, miso, tempeh, pickled vegetables, yogurt with live cultures, and kefir.
There is some debate about whether or not the live cultures survive all the way to your gut, but people who eat fermented foods usually report fewer digestion issues.
Limit how much red meat, dairy, and saturated and trans fats you eat. Red meat and high-fat dairy products can slow down the growth of good bacteria in your gut. Fried foods can also promote the growth of bad bacteria.[5]
Lean meats, like skinless chicken or turkey, as well as fish and shellfish are good alternatives for red meat.
Try taking a daily probiotic supplement. Probiotics may help some people digest better, and add good bacteria to the gut. However, you have to take them consistently every day in order to keep good bacteria alive and functioning. Look for probiotics that include lactobacillus acidophilus if you have trouble digesting dairy, bifidobacterium bifidum if you have IBS, lactobacillus rhamnosus to guard against traveller's diarrhea, and bifidobacterium longum if you struggle with constipation.[6]
Follow the dosing instructions that come with your specific probiotics.
Some people feel better when they take probiotics while others don't notice a difference. Give it a few weeks after you start taking probiotics and if you don't notice a change, it's probably not worth it.
Consider a fecal transplant for stubborn gut infections. A fecal transplant is a relatively new procedure for people who suffer from C. difficile colitis. If you suffer from diarrhea, stomach aches, or bloody stools that last for 2 or more days, this could be a sign of C. difficile colitis. During a fecal transplant, a doctor will use a colonoscopy to introduce donor stool into your colon. You will be sedated for the procedure. A fecal transplant is usually only considered in stubborn or recurring cases.[7]
A fecal transplant is considered after a round of antibiotics.
Avoid antibiotics unless they are absolutely necessary. Antibiotics kill good bacteria as well as bad bacteria. Of course, you should take antibiotics if you really need to, but talk to your doctor about if you have other options.[8]
Antibiotics are used in animal agriculture, so there is a possibility that eating more animal products can put more antibiotics into your digestive system and kill good bacteria.
Prebiotic carbohydrates are a substrate that help good bacteria and beneficial microbiota grow.
Many things affect your microbiota, some of which you can change. Your maternal microbiota are present when you're born. However, diet, environmental exposure, and antibiotic use can have secondary effects on microbiota colonization.
Practicing healthy habits like exercising, getting enough sleep, and managing stress could also potentially have a positive impact on good bacteria in your gut.
