Facing the person who betrayed you, who preyed upon you, who haunts you: It's the stuff of vengeful daydreams, born of nightmares. Jeannie Vanasco has had plenty of nightmares, but the story she tells in "Things We Didn't Talk About When I Was a Girl" is not one of revenge. It's about violence and forgiveness.

Taliban officials have met with a US special envoy for the first time since peace talks collapsed a month ago. But US officials have said official peace talks have not resumed.
US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad (top photo) has met with Taliban negotiators in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, a Taliban official said on Saturday on condition of anonymity.
It is the first time such a meeting, said to have taken place on Friday, has occurred since US President Donald Trump described a seemingly imminent peace deal to end Afghanistan's 18-year conflict as "dead" a month ago.
* Messages circulated on the internet called for protests in more than 20 areas, including hotspots such as Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and Sha Tin * In Sheung Shui, masked radicals vandalised a number of shops, including Arome Bakery, China Mobile, Best Mart 360 and a pharmacy
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Hong Kong on Saturday in the second straight day of defiance against a newly imposed anti-mask law, while dozens of radicals vandalised shops in the border town of Sheung Shui.
The new law came into force at midnight on Friday and, in a first, officers at Mong Kok Police Station, a regular flashpoint during protests, warned a crowd of about 100 gathered outside late on Saturday to remove any face coverings immediately or they could face criminal charges.
At least 94 people have been killed and nearly 4,000 wounded as tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Baghdad and southern Iraq over the past five days, according to the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights.
Security forces fired live ammunition and tear gas at demonstrators in Baghdad on Saturday, killing at least eight people and wounding 17, health and security officials said.
The protesters are taking a stand against a lack of jobs, corruption and poor public services. Living conditions were impacted by the war against the Islamic State, which took control of large parts of the country in 2014.
* North Korea's chief nuclear negotiator announced end of talks in Stockholm * Working-level discussions began on Thursday in the Swedish capital * A day earlier, the North successfully test-fired submarine-launched missile
Working-level nuclear talks between North Korea and the United States have broken off, North Korea's chief negotiator said on Saturday.
'The negotiations have not fulfilled our expectation and finally broke off,' the North's chief nuclear negotiator, Kim Myong Gil, told reporters through an interpreter outside the country's embassy in Stockholm.
The North Korean delegation arrived in Stockholm on Thursday for the working-level denuclearization talks.
Kim blamed Washington for bringing 'nothing to the negotiation table' at the meeting, which came after months of stalemate.
He said talks broke down 'entirely because the U.S. has not discarded its old stance and attitude.'
Anti-communist crowds marched through Hong Kong Sunday to decry the government’s emergency powers and press their demands for political freedom. Many wore masks in open defiance of a government ban on facial coverings meant as a deterrent to protesters, whose four-month-old democratic rebellion has thrown the semi-autonomous enclave into crisis and caused consternation among China’s top leadership.
Territory-wide SMS alerts urged the public to “stay alert” and “avoid going out” as protesters assembled from lunchtime under overcast skies in the retail and entertainment district of Causeway Bay. Chanting “Hongkongers resist!” they set off in the direction of the city center and the main government offices. The legislature was evacuated, retailers brought down their shutters, mainland Chinese-owned businesses were vandalized, and a branch of Starbucks ransacked. Police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.
Live news streams also showed angry crowds gathering in the tourist district on the Kowloon peninsula. Shouting “Fight for freedom! Stand with Hong Kong!” and singing “Glory to Hong Kong”—the song that many are calling Hong Kong’s “national anthem”—they headed up the tourist strip of Nathan Road. A small number continued on to the northern district of Kowloon Tong. They erected barricades across Waterloo Road—a major thoroughfare through the affluent suburb that was home to martial arts icon Bruce Lee and which has so far not been affected by the protests.
“The government is doing everything it can to restrict our freedom of assembly because it wants to end the protests,” said a protester named Eva, 50, when asked about the mask ban. “I don’t think it will end unless the army marches in,” she told TIME.
Marching alongside, her husband, 67, said that while he did not agree with violence “The youngsters feel they have no choice … the government made them.”
In the late afternoon, live news broadcasts showed protesters erecting barricades and besieging a large police station in central Kowloon. Police on the parapets fired rubber bullets to drive the crowd back.
The latest demonstrations come in the wake of the most violent unrest Hong Kong has seen in over 50 years. Protesters rampaged across the city on both Oct. 1—China’s national day—and again on Oct. 4, when the government invoked the colonial-era Emergency Regulations Ordinance to ban the wearing of masks at public gatherings.
Protesters clashed with police and smashed shopfronts. A teenage protester miraculously survived after being shot by police at close range. An undercover police officer, who drew his weapon to fire a warning shot but instead hit and wounded another teenage boy, was attacked by an enraged mob and narrowly escaped with his life after being momentarily set alight with a petrol bomb. Scores of other people were injured and hundreds of arrests were made.
The city’s train network came in for particularly savage assault, with protesters ransacking stations, starting fires, and attacking trains. Extensive damage meant that the entire system was suspended yesterday and only partial services resumed today.
Hong Kong appeared shell-shocked for much of Saturday, with banks, shops, malls, and government facilities shut, runs reported on ATMs, and panic buying breaking out at the few supermarkets that remained open. Disturbances resumed in the evening at multiple locations as protesters continued to vent their anger at the mask ban.
“Why can police wear a mask? They say it’s to protect themselves. Why can’t we protect ourselves? We just want to fight for our rights. But they are trying to take even this right away,” Winta, a 17-year-old protester, told TIME.
Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said Saturday that the extent of violence during Hong Kong’s four months of anti-government unrest warranted an independent probe. She called on Hong Kong authorities to launch an “effective, prompt, independent and impartial investigation” into the handling of the protests, which to date have led to more than 1,100 injuries.
Hong Kong’s political crisis was sparked by a now withdrawn extradition bill, which would have allowed the rendition of fugitives to mainland China for the first time. Opposition to the bill quickly grew into a repudiation of both the unrepresentative local government and of Beijing, which has labeled the movement a color rebellion. Many protesters are calling for self-determination or independence for the former British possession—which was retroceded to China in 1997 after 156 years of colonial rule—and appear prepared to escalate their actions.
“I don’t think it’s violence—these are methods to resist the government’s authoritarian power,” said Kelly, 25, when asked about the use of force by radical protesters. “No matter what happens, and what [the radicals do], we won’t split.”

(KABUL, Afghanistan) — The Taliban met with a U.S. envoy in the Pakistani capital, a Taliban official said Saturday, the first such encounter since President Donald Trump announced a month ago that a seemingly imminent peace deal to end Afghanistan’s 18-year war was dead.
The official offered few details of Friday’s meeting between peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban delegation led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a co-founder of the movement that was ousted in 2001 by the U.S.-led coalition. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media.
U.S. officials have been keen to say peace talks haven’t resumed, at least not now in Islamabad. Still, the meeting is noteworthy as the United States seeks an exit from what has become its longest military engagement. More than 14,000 U.S. troops are still in Afghanistan and Trump has repeatedly expressed his frustration with their continued deployment, complaining they have taken on the duties of policing the country, a job he said the Afghan government needed to do.
Khalilzad has been in Islamabad for much of the week meeting with senior government officials in what the U.S. State Department described as follow-up meetings to those he held in New York during last month’s U.N. General Assembly session. At the time, he met Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been calling for a resumption of peace talks.
The Taliban delegation led by Mullah Baradar __one of its more powerful members __ arrived separately in the Pakistani capital for meetings with government officials that they said were being held to discuss a wide range of political issues relating to the more than 1.5 million Afghans still living as refugees in Pakistan.
Baradar was arrested in Pakistan in 2010 in a joint Pakistani-CIA operation after he secretly opened peace talks with then-Afghan President Hamid Karzai, a move that attempted to sideline Pakistan and went against U.S. policy, which did not support talks with the Taliban.
In 2018, Baradar was released from jail to facilitate peace talks after Khalilzad was appointed U.S. peace envoy.
During the past year, Khalilzad held nine rounds of talks with the Taliban in the Middle eastern State of Qatar, where the insurgents maintain a political office. In early September a deal seemed imminent, but a fresh round of violence and the death of a U.S. soldier caused Trump to suddenly tweet an end to talks and cancel an agreement-signing ceremony that had been planned for Camp David and about which few had been aware.
During the Doha talks, Khalilzad and Baradar held one-on-one meetings, and in recent weeks the Taliban had traveled to China, Russia and Iran to drum up support for a return to talks.
But in Afghanistan, the country is still awaiting the results of presidential polls held on Sept. 28.
The leading contenders are President Ashraf Ghani and his current partner in the unity government, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah.
Abdullah has already said he believes he has won, while Ghani’s supporters are declaring he has the necessary votes, causing many to fear political chaos. Preliminary results are not expected before Oct. 17 and final results until Nov. 7. If there is no clear winner with 51% of the vote, a second round will be held within two weeks of the final vote announcement.
(BAGHDAD) — Iraqi protesters pressed on with angry anti-government rallies in the capital and across several provinces for a fifth day Saturday, setting government offices on fire and ignoring appeals for calm from political and religious leaders. Security agencies fatally shot 19 protesters and wounded more than three dozen in a sustained deadly response that has claimed more than 80 lives since the upheaval began.
The semiofficial Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights, affiliated with the parliament, put the death toll at 94. It said nearly 4,000 people have been wounded since Tuesday, when mostly young demonstrators spontaneously initiated the rallies to demand jobs, improvements to electricity, water and other services, and an end to corruption in the oil-rich nation.
The violent deadlock presented the conflict-scarred nation with its most serious challenge since the defeat of the Islamic State group two years ago and deepened the political crisis of a country still struggling with the legacy of multiple, unfinished wars since the U.S. invasion in 2003.
“It has been 16 years of corruption and injustice,” said Abbas Najm, a 43-year-old unemployed engineer who was part of a rally Saturday in the square. “We are not afraid of bullets or the death of martyrs. We will keep going and we won’t back down.”
Scrambling to contain the demonstrations, Iraqi leaders called an emergency session of parliament Saturday to discuss the protesters’ demands. But they lacked a quorum due to a boycott called by influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, leader of parliament’s largest bloc. On Friday, al-Sadr called on Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi’s government to resign and hold early elections, saying the shedding of blood of Iraqis “cannot be ignored.”
Abdul-Mahdi said in an address to the nation that the protesters’ “legitimate demands” had been heard, but he defended the deadly response of security forces as a “bitter medicine” that was necessary for the country to swallow.
In a desperate attempt to curb the growing rallies, authorities blocked the internet Wednesday and imposed a round-the-clock curfew on Thursday. The curfew, ignored by protesters, was lifted at 5 a.m. Saturday, allowing shops to open and traffic to flow in most of Baghdad before the new demonstrations began.
As in previous days, protesters waited to gather until the afternoon, when temperatures were cooler and ensured greater participation, and security forces responded by opening fire.
Health and security officials said more than a dozen people were killed and about 40 wounded in the capital on Saturday when security forces opened fire during protests in various neighborhoods, including central Tahrir Square, which remained closed to cars, and around which special forces and army vehicles deployed in an operation that extended as far as 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away. The forces also unleashed tear gas, said health, police and medical officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to brief reporters.
A protester who refused to be named for fear of repercussions said anti-riot police directly opened fire at the protesters. The military initially tried to stop the police but ultimately left the area, the protester said.
In a smaller, peaceful rally earlier Saturday in the capital, demonstrators raised banners demanding the resignation of Abdul-Mahdi and an investigation into the killings of protesters.
Thousands of protesters also took to the streets in the southern cities of Nasiriyah and Diwaniyah, defying a curfew still in place there. In Diwaniyah, at least one protester was killed as demonstrators marched toward local government offices, a medical official and human rights official said. They did not provide details.
In the restive city of Nasiriyah, demonstrators torched the offices of three political parties and a lawmaker whom they blame for their country’s ills. Security forces responded with gunfire, but there was no immediate word on casualties, said the officials, who described the protest as “very large.”
Abdul Mahdi’s office and Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi have called on protest representatives to meet with them so they could hear their demands. In a televised meeting in parliament, al-Halbusi met with a group of Iraqis and tribal representatives, mostly in their 50s and older, to discuss the country’s myriad problems. Al-Hablusi repeated promises to address unemployment and poverty.
But the promises did nothing to stop the unfolding street violence. The deadliest day was Friday, when 22 people were killed in Baghdad. Health officials said many of those victims were wounded in the head and chest.
(LONDON) — Prince Harry is suing The Sun and the Daily Mirror, two of Britain’s most popular tabloid newspapers, over alleged phone hacking.
Buckingham Palace confirmed Saturday that claims regarding “illegal interception of voicemail messages” were filed on Harry’s behalf. The palace declined to say more or provide details “given the particulars of the claims are not yet public.”
News Group Newspapers, which owns The Sun and the now defunct News of the World, acknowledged the prince’s High Court action while Reach, which owns the Mirror, said it was “aware that proceedings have been issued” but hasn’t yet received notice of them.
The cases escalate Harry’s fight with the British tabloids. It comes days after his American wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, sued the Mail on Sunday for alleged copyright infringement, misuse of private information and violating the U.K.’s data protection law after the paper published a letter she wrote to her father.
Harry then lambasted British tabloids after Meghan filed her lawsuit on Tuesday, saying in a statement that his wife’s lawsuit, which was months in the making, was a response to a “ruthless campaign” to smear her by creating “lie after lie at her expense” during her maternity leave.
The prince accused the British media of hounding Meghan the way it did his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a 1997 car crash while trying to elude paparazzi.
British tabloid newspapers have paid millions of dollars to settle claims that their employees had hacked the phone voicemails of celebrities, politicians and others in the public eye.
The prince’s lawsuits likely date back years. The News of the World was shut down in 2011, at the height of the hacking scandal and when its former editors later went on trial, a court heard evidence that indicated Harry along with his old brother, Prince William, were targets of the paper’s illicit interception of phone messages.
A transcript of one of the messages read at the trial came from a 2006 recording of William pretending to be Harry’s girlfriend at the time, revealing the extent of media intrusion into their lives.
Harry and William have long had a strained relationship with the press. They grew up in the spotlight and were young boys when their parents’ acrimonious divorce received wall-to-wall coverage.
(HONG KONG) — With subway services shut down, the wearing of face masks criminalized at rallies and Hong Kong’s leader reaffirming her determination not to let rioters get the upper hand, anti-government protests that have shaken the city diminished in intensity Saturday but didn’t stop.
Marchers still came out to defy the new ban on face coverings that the government of the semi-autonomous Chinese territory says have made the identification of violent protesters difficult for police. Shielded under umbrellas, many wearing masks, several hundred demonstrators clogged a thoroughfare in the central business district, carrying a yellow banner marked “Glory to Hong Kong” and shouting, “Hong Kong, resist!”
Scattered gatherings of protesters in masks popped up elsewhere, too, with some holding hands in a human chain. But protester numbers Saturday afternoon appeared down from previous weekends when tens of thousands flooded the streets.
A combination of factors seemed to be at work. Some marchers said the protest movement that has plunged Hong Kong into its deepest crisis since its handover from British to Chinese rule in 1997 was merely harboring strength for the long haul.
The closure of the entire MTR network of subway and trains that habitually handles more than 4 million trips a day also caused major disruption to the usually never-resting but now edgy and restive city of 7.5 million people. An express link to Hong Kong international airport also closed for a while before reopening with reduced service Saturday afternoon.
“From MTR to EmptyR,” tweeted activist Joshua Wong, a key player in 2014 protests that foreshadowed the past four months of demonstrations that have snowballed into a sustained flare of anti-government and anti-China fury.
“Can’t go anywhere,” said Kevin Cui, a tourist from mainland China who’d planned to visit Hong Kong Disneyland only to discover at a shuttered subway station that the network was suspended. “This is very troublesome.”
Following up on its face-mask ban that went into effect at midnight Friday, the government also hammered home a get-tough message that it would not bow to rioters and appealed for public support after an overnight rash of widespread violence, including arson attacks. Citizens awoke Saturday not only to closed subway stations but also shuttered shops and banks, where lines formed at cash machines.
In a televised address broadcast as protesters again marched in masks, a solemn Carrie Lam, the city’s chief executive, described Hong Kong as “semi-paralyzed” and said, “Everyone is worried, anxious, or even scared.”
“The government needs to take drastic measures to say no to violence, restore peace in society, protect citizens’ right to continue their daily lives and freedom, not allowing a small group of rioters to destroy it,” she said.
John Lee, the government’s security secretary, said by not condemning violence, people are stoking it.
“What is adding oil to violence is people’s support for these acts,” he said. “What is important is that everybody comes out to say, ‘No, society will not accept violence.'”
Some agreed, even as they continued to blame Lam for sparking the protest movement with a now abandoned measure that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited for trial in Communist Party-controlled courts in mainland China.
“There is outright rioting,” said retiree Peter Tai, 67, stocking up on groceries for fear they’d become hard to find.
“Protesters want democracy and freedom, but don’t they have freedom now? People can go anywhere and do things freely. Freedom is more valuable than democracy. I hope these young people don’t do things they’ll regret forever,” he said.
But many peaceful protesters say violence has become a means to an end, the only way for young masked protesters to force the government to bend to clamors for full democracy and other demands.
As a group of black-clad youths in protective gear rushed past him, many carrying bamboo sticks, a property industry worker who came out with his wife Friday night to show his opposition to the mask ban expressed his admiration for those confronting police.
“I know they have done terrible things” he said. “Can you believe how brave they are?”
He gave only his first name, Alex. He and his wife, Pauline, both donned masks that covered their mouths to hit streets in central Hong Kong, where clouds of police tear gas to disperse protesters also caused spluttering tourists and Friday night revelers to flee, eyes stinging.
Under cover of darkness, masked protesters rampaged, setting fires, setting up makeshift road blocks that backed up traffic and vandalizing subway stations, China-linked businesses and other property.
An officer fired a single shot from his gun in self-defense after he was attacked by protesters in the northern Yuen Long district, said police spokeswoman Yolanda Yu. She said a man was wounded, but police didn’t know exactly how he got shot. A police official, who requested anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media, said the victim is 14. A Hospital Authority spokesman said the teen was in serious but not critical condition.
The teen became the second victim of gunfire in the protests that began in June. An 18-year-old protester was also shot at close range by a riot police officer on Tuesday.
(HELSINKI) — North Korea’s chief negotiator said Saturday that discussions with the U.S. on Pyongyang’s nuclear program have broken down, but Washington said the two sides had “good discussions” that it intends to build on in two weeks.
The North Korean negotiator, Kim Miyong Gil, said the talks in Stockholm had “not fulfilled our expectations and broke down. I am very displeased about it.” Speaking outside the North Korean Embassy, he read a statement in Korean that a translator next to him read in English.
Kim said negotiations broke down “entirely because the U.S. has not discarded its old stance and attitude.”
Saturday’s talks were the first between the U.S. and North Korea since the February breakdown of the second summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in Vietnam.
North Korea has since resumed missile tests, including an underwater-launched missile that fell inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone Wednesday.
State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said Kim’s comments did “not reflect the content or the spirit” of the “good discussions” that took place over eight-and-a-half hours, adding that the U.S. accepted an invitation from Sweden to return to Stockholm in two weeks to continue discussions.
In a statement, Ortagus said the U.S. delegation “previewed a number of new initiatives that would allow us to make progress in each of the four pillars” of a joint statement issued after Trump and Kim’s first summit in Singapore.
“The United States and the DPRK will not overcome a legacy of 70 years of war and hostility on the Korean Peninsula through the course of a single Saturday,” Ortagus said
Talks were held at the Villa Elfvik Strand conference facility in Lidingo, an island in the Stockholm archipelago located northeast of the capital, Swedish news agency TT said. It added that Kim Miyong Gil arrived on Thursday while U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun came on Friday.
Because the U.S. does not have official diplomatic relations with North Korea, Sweden has often acted as a bridge between Washington and Pyongyang.

Two years after Chennaibased Krish Iyer's (name changed on request) twin sons went to the US for their higher education, they were ambivalent about moving back to India. Iyer, who is a serial entrepreneur, wanted them to enter the job market on an equal footing with everyone else and not be dependent on the vagaries of the ever-changing visa policies, he told ET."I decided to explore options for them to continue to stay on in the US and the EB5 visa was the only sure shot avenue," he said. The EB5 investor programme puts investors who meet certain criteria on a fast track path to obtaining permanent residency in the country. While the EB5 programme provides for residency for the entire family, Iyer and his wife were not interested in uprooting themselves and the applications were made independently for both the sons.In Delhi, Sandeep Singh's daughter had to return to India after studying psychology in the US as the job market was not very conducive at the time. While his son, who went on to study computer engineering did manage to secure an H-1B visa in 2014, Singh saw the early signs of the clampdown on legal immigration."My wife and I have worked in the corporate sector, followed by a successful stint as an entrepreneur; so we had the resources to consider the EB5 option. This was the only one where there was some certainty," he said.Singh is now considering applying for his daughter as well because of his experience the first time around. These are not isolated incidents. In the last few months, EB5 visa consultancies have reported a sharp spike in interest from wealthy Indian parents wanting to make investments in the US through this route for their children. Rogelio Caceres, co-founder of LCR Capital Partners, said, "Education-minded Indian parents are concerned that their children might not get a job or work visa in the US after spending years studying there. This is the key reason for the increased interest we're seeing. They want to maximise the value of their US education," he said.LCR helps facilitate investments in EB5-eligible projects and Caceres was recently in Mumbai after travelling through Djakarta, Muscat and other locations, where he met primarily the Indian diaspora who was interested in investing through this route. For parents, the biggest attraction is that by the time the child graduates, he would have received his green card or permanent residency, making him eligible to apply for jobs without needing any additional documentation.Vivek Tandon, CEO, EB5 BRICS, an EB5 visa consultancy, said that there had been an increased interest in families investing for their 12-16-year-olds."Most times, the parents are well settled in their careers in India and don't want to uproot themselves. This is more about creating an option for the child." he said. For Indians applying through this route, it takes about seven years to receive a green card as against Chinese residents where the waiting period is close to 15 years because of the current backlog.
The Monetary Policy Committee has cut the repo rate by 25 basis points; not 35, as they did the last time around in August, not 50 basis points as some enthusiasts have been urging. This effectively says, look, buddy, I would help you if I could, and here is 25 basis points so you know I'm serious, but I really can't do much, you have to get help from somewhere else.It is not that the RBI does not know that things are bad. The Monetary Policy Report analyses the global economy and the domestic data to conclude that this year's growth is likely to be just 6.1%, rather than 6.9% that had been (fondly) hoped for just two months back. But the reality is that there has been surplus liquidity in the system in August and September. The weighted average rate in the call money market has been below the repo rate for most of the first six months of the current fiscal year, which is the clearest signal that liquidity is adequate and is no constraint on economic activity. Transmission of past rate cuts to the lending rates of banks has been tardy. While the repo rate has been cut by 110 basis points, but the weighted average lending rates of commercial banks declined by just 29 basis points. As people in the market know, banks do not want to lend, unless the borrower has ironclad collateral and the banker who makes the loan can satisfy a roving Vigilance Commission/Enforcement Directorate/CBI official, who happens to take in interest in the why and whereof of the transaction, 300% that the loan represented no risk whatsoever to the bank. This rules out most business loans. So, if the RBI feels it is helpless to do anything much to boost growth, can nothing be done? "With inflation expected to remain below target in the remaining period of 2019-20 and Q1:2020-21, there is policy space to address these growth concerns by reinvigorating domestic demand within the flexible inflation targeting mandate. It is in this context that the MPC decided to continue with an accommodative stance as long as it is necessary to revive growth, while ensuring that inflation remains within the target." What do these sage lines from the Monetary Policy Statement mean? There is scope for policy action to reinvigorate demand, but the RBI's policy is confined to making liquidity available when the demand for liquidity goes up. So, its stance will be accommodative. Who, then, has to take the policy action that the MPC says is possible? Clearly, the government. The RBI has tossed the ball firmly into the government's court. The government has already taken some substantial action by way corporate tax rate cuts. While the general rate cut has been to bring the effective tax rate (total corporate tax collected as a proportion of the total pre-tax profits of all companies on which tax is levied) nearly five percentage points down, the new effective tax rate of 25.17% remains two percentage points above the effective tax rate in 2013-14. But the tax cut for new manufacturing companies is real and significant. The effective rate of 17.01% brings it on par with Singapore's and lower than the nominal rate in most Asian economies. Will companies incorporate new subsidiaries and set up new manufacturing facilities, to take advantage of the 17% tax rate? The natural instinct of the Indian promoter would be to set up a fresh subsidiary and transfer existing assets to the new unit and try to claim tax benefits for ongoing operations. Suppose the taxman stops this subversion of the goal of promoting new investment. Will industry set up new capacity? Eventually, yes. But the RBI's survey shows that capacity utilisation, seasonally adjusted, is just a tad over 74%. Unless there are firm signs of short-term growth, why would any promoter rush in where Masayoshi WeWork Son would fear to tread, and add to capacity that would be utilised only later? If new entrepreneurs can be found, who think they can displace some old existing fogeys with superior technology and greater efficiency, they would set up new capacity. That would boost investment. But such entrepreneurs are rare, particularly in the manufacturing space, where the Indian penchant has been to import components cheap, lobby the government for steep protection on the finished product, turn a few screws here, solder a few wires there and stick a few labels on shiny packaging and cry Make in India!Perhaps foreign manufacturers can be induced to set up manufacturing in India. After all, India has raced up the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business rankings and it is now relatively easy to get an electricity connection in Delhi or Mumbai. But then, there stand in the way India's reputation for changing rules mid-course, and gratuitous ingratitude, as in the shoddy treatment of Cairn, whose discovery of oil in Rajasthan has saved India billions of dollars worth of foreign exchange and was slapped, for its pains, with a retrospective tax on consolidation of its own subsidiaries with no change in beneficial ownership, on which no capital gains tax would be discernible to anyone with any sense of the first principles of taxation.Still some company seeking to flee China's increasingly high-wage economy could see India as an ideal location for setting up shop. Such targets should be identified and incentivised. But these are iffy sources of fresh investment. The only sure way to step up investment is for the Centre to step up its own investment activity and give the states additional leeway to step up their investment activity. Of total government spending in India, the Centre today accounts for about 42%, the bulk of the spending is by the states. Squeezing the States' finances is guaranteed to depress investment. The opposite is true, too.Let the National Infrastructure Investment Fund tap global capital markets, where over $17 trillion worth of bonds carry negative rates of interest, and raise funds to be channelled to state government-owned infrastructure development corporations, with appropriate guarantees by the concerned state governments, to carry out infrastructure projects. Build a new town each, say. Or an airport. India is deficient in both towns and airports when seen against the urban population and the demand for air travel that will materialise a decade hence.Pouring state funded concrete is the immediate solution to decelerating growth. That, after all, is not the RBI's job. However, the RBI has to work hard, along with Sebi and the government, to create a viable market for corporate bonds, so that the mediation of liquidity to investment projects can take place efficiently. The banks must be recapitalised and bankers' seats shifted from under the Damocles' sword of criminal suspicion of any banking decision.
The government may soon mandate private companies with outstanding debts above a certain threshold undergo a mandatory secretarial audit, a senior government official said Saturday."Mandatory secretarial audit is right now restricted to listed companies, but I think it may have to get extended to private companies which have outstanding (debts ) beyond a threshold," Corporate Affairs Secretary Injeti Srinivas said while speaking at the 51st foundation day of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. He said this might be necessary in cases where companies have borrowed heavily from banks.Under the Companies Act, all listed companies are required to provide a secretarial audit report annually.Experts have welcomed the developments as the move will help improve compliance and corporate governance standards in the county. "The majority of India Inc works as private limited companies, with huge turnover, bank loans, etc. Bringing such companies under the scope of a secretarial audit will help in improving the level of governance and will also lead to an increase in the level of compliance and transparency in operations," said Ankit Singhi, executive director at law firm Corporate Professionals.Singhi also said that such audits would particularly help in ensuring that borrowed funds were used for their intended purpose and not diverted to other related entities. Corporate governance issues have taken centre stage after a series of banking frauds largely due to corporate misgovernance. In February, the Securities and Exchange Board of India amended disclosure requirements for all listed entities to include a mandatory secretarial audit as well as an annual secretarial compliance report to be filed by a practicing company secretary.
In the world of innovation, India has an old reputation: it remains a minnow when it comes to patents. If over 600,000 applications were filed in the US and more than twice that number in China in 2017, in India, there were only 46,600 — and patent grants came to just over 12,000 in a country of 1.37 billion people. In a nondescript building on a narrow, congested lane in central Mumbai, the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks is bent on changing this. It wants to make filing patents cheaper and granting patents faster, which, it hopes will result in more applications. That, though, may not be easy. The path to patents is paved with research and funding. While Indian companies, including startups, universities and research institutes need to direct their attention towards generating more patents if India has to emerge as a hub of inventiveness, it also calls for increased spend on research and development (R&D).India spent just 0.7% of its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2016-17 on R&D. Meanwhile, Japan, the US and China spent 3.2%, 2.8% and 2.1%, respectively, in 2017, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). India wants to more than double its R&D expenditure to at least 2% of GDP by 2022.Forget funding, even awareness about filing patents is low in India, says Shekhar C Mande, director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which topped the list of Indian patent grantees in 2018-19, with 166 patents.71458601 71458632 71458633 India has still not woken up fully to the significance of intellectual property rights (IPR), particularly patents, and their commercial implications. Patent filings and grants in India are dominated by foreign applicants: they filed two-thirds of patent applications in 2018-19, and got four-fifths of grants, according to the Office of Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks. In India, Qualcomm, the US chipmaker, topped both patent filings and grants in 2018-19. It made 1,559 applications, more than six times the filings of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the top Indian company on the list.Qualcomm was granted 405 Indian patents in 2018-19, four times the patents assigned to state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), the Indian company with the most patent grants last fiscal.71458634 71458635 Niti Dewan, a patent attorney, says Indian companies look at patents as a cost centre. "When we do workshops on patents, it's mostly the legal and R&D teams that attend and not the senior management." Qualcomm and BHEL did not respond to ET Magazine's questions and TCS declined to comment, citing the silent period before its quarterly results.Patents in India are governed by the Indian Patents Act, 1970. The biggest change happened with the amendments in the early 2000s to make the law compliant with the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). India increased the term of a patent from 5-7 years for some categories and 14 for others to a uniform 20 years, and did away with the provision that allowed Indian generic pharmaceutical companies to reverse-engineer drugs patented by global companies.Comparing India's patent laws with those of other countries, a spokesperson for Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, which has over 700 patents globally, including around 20 in India, says India does not allow an extension of a patent's term, unlike in US and Europe. India's patent law also prevents evergreening, which refers to attempts by pharma companies to tweak their patented product or process to seek new patents to extend their monopoly. It was on the basis of this that the Supreme Court in 2013 denied Novartis AG a patent for its cancer drug Glivec. India has enabled faster resolution of IPR cases by bringing them under the ambit of commercial courts through a 2015 law.Inventors can patent the same technology in multiple countries based on its commercial potential in those markets. One can seek simultaneous protection in over 150 countries by filing a Patent Cooperation Treaty application, which gives companies and research institutes 30 months to file patent applications in countries of their choice. But filing patents abroad requires deep pockets. For instance, in India one can get a patent, which is valid for 20 years from the date of filing, for as little as Rs 20,000, while an overseas application runs into lakhs of rupees. Indian residents filed around 13,000 patents abroad and nearly 15,000 at home in 2017, the latest year for which global data is available with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).71458636 71458637 71458638 Publications Over PatentsAnother problem is that researchers in India tend to focus on publishing their work in journals instead of patenting them. "Research papers are counterproductive to patenting," says Geetha Manjunath, founder and chief executive of Niramai Health Analytix, a deeptech startup. Once a scientist publishes her findings, she only has 12 months to file a patent, but it is risky since the research paper can in some cases be used to reject her patent application. "Whether or not you should publish your findings or file a patent application depends on whether your research can lead to a product. It's always better to file a provisional application before you publish," says Kishore Sreenivasan, head of CSIR's Unit for Research and Development of Information Products. One reason why researchers are shy of patenting their ideas in India is the time taken to get a patent. In 2017, India on average took 64 months to grant a patent, compared with 22 months each in China and the European Patent Office and 24 months in the US, according to WIPO. "The issue with the delay in grant is that the technology might actually move on or become less relevant by the time the patent is granted," says Velusamy R, chief of product development, automotive division, Mahindra & Mahindra. As of March 2019, the company had 61 patents in India and 16 abroad.OP Gupta, India's Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, says it has been speeding up the process. "The grant period in 2015 was 84 months. In the next two years, we plan to bring it down to 36 months."Speeding UpIndia examined over 85,400 patent applications in 2018-19, around five times the number in 2015-16. This has been made possible in part by a similar increase in the number of examiners in the same period to 670. "My office is flooded with examination reports," says Dewan. In addition, since 2016, startups have had to pay only 20% of the patent-filing charges. Gupta believes that thanks to these changes, the share of Indian residents in total patent applications in the country has risen from a fifth in 2014-15 to a third in 2018-19. "By March 2021, it should touch 50%."Startups can file a patent application for as low as Rs 1,600 and request a fast-track examination for Rs 8,000. As of May 2019, of the 512 startups that had sought an expedited examination, the applications of 453 were assessed and 151 patents were granted, according to the commerce ministry.Chennai-based MicroGo LLP's patent was one of those 151. Founded in 2016 by Rachna Dave, MicroGo filed a provisional patent application that year for a technology to release an active molecule into water or the air through a polymer. MicroGo continued its research and filed a request for expedited examination in late 2018 and got its patent granted within 101 days. MicroGo's products are used to purify water or to sanitise surgical instruments without power or water, among other applications. The cost of patent-filing in India is certainly not an impediment for startups. But the time required to perfect a patentable idea is. Dave, one of the three inventors listed in MicroGo's patent, says India's billion-dollar startups are in businesses — such as ecommerce and food delivery — where the revenue model is dependent on the reach of their offerings and sales volumes, and not on patents.Arpita Mukherjee, professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, attributes the paucity of patents in the startup community partly to its focus on customising ideas from other countries to Indian needs. That could change with deep-tech startups whose very business is predicated on patented hardware or software, or a combination of both.Niramai, for example, has filed patents in India for its software that analyses temperature variations in the breast, obtained through a thermal camera, to detect cancer. But CEO Geetha Manjunath says her strategy is to file first in the US. "Investors want to look at US patents and not Indian patents." That could be because of both the licensing opportunities in the US and the rigour of the US patent system.A key factor driving patent filings in the US is industry funding of research in universities, which totalled $4.2 billion in 2016, according to the National Science Foundation. The benefits of industry-academia collaboration cannot be overstated — Stanford University was instrumental in the rise of Silicon Valley. In India, this is largely restricted to premier institutes like the IITs. "Companies are keen to own IPs so they come to us," says Milind D Atrey, dean of R&D at IIT-Bombay, whose R&D funding for 2018-19 was Rs 335 crore. Around 80% of that came from the government and the rest from the private sector. IIT-Bombay filed 98 patents, nearly a sixth filed by all IITs, in India in 2018-19.As important as the number of patents are the quality of those patents and their commercial potential. Around 14% of CSIR's patents are licensed. "The goal of filing a patent is to eventually commercialise it. Once a patent is granted, we see if there are companies interested in licensing it," says Mande. The CSIR has a business development office that works on commercialising the patents filed by its 38 labs. With the advances China and the US are making in communications, artificial intelligence and healthcare technology, India cannot afford to sit on the sidelines, and the only way for the country to get in on the action is to ramp up its R&D efforts and engender a culture of patenting.
About six months ago, one of India's richest families wanted an entire floor of their home converted into a bar, but they had a condition, an unusual one at that: all the alcohol must be hidden away. The family had never had a bar at home but with the children all grown up, they wanted a high-end entertainment space. They, however, didn't want to fluster the elders who wouldn't be comfortable even at the sight of Scotch. They hired Delhi-based bar designer Speedx. The brief was simple: build a bar that one couldn't see. To build the "invisible" bar, Speedx used frosted glass and behind-thescenes refrigeration. It concealed alcohol bottles in corner spaces and tucked away state-of-the-art speed rails and containers until these could be summoned for a shindig.Speedx's design highs also include creating seven bars in a building for a suiting fabric baron, each bar costing about Rs 9 lakh and one of them even sporting the body of a Lamborghini as bar top.On a HighSpeedx has designed over 250 bars since 2017, including about 70 this year. "When we started out, there were no takers for our services," says founder Anirudh Singhal, 37, who calls himself a "master blender" of his company. Now, it has close to 100 employees and has recently opened an office in Mumbai, with Bengaluru next on the expansion list. Two years ago, Indian restaurateurs did not quite look for bar designers. They mostly hired kitchen consultants who designed the bar as well. Since many didn't really have the expertise on how a bar space should be designed, it was often a muddle. The bartender would have to run around the bar to fix a few drinks and the service would become tardy. The scene has changed as bars are raising the game and cocktails are calling the shots. There can be as many as 150 cocktails on the menu, trying the skills of the most accomplished bartenders and demanding spaces that are ergonomically designed.Speedx boasts a long list of restaurant clients now: in Mumbai, it has Americano, Bombay Canteen, Masala Library, Social, Fatty Bao, Glocal and Uno Mas, as well as all 23 outlets of Cafe Delhi Heights in the country. It has designed a 20,000 sq ft bar called Daddy in Bengaluru as well as Delhi's cocktail bars Dragonfly Experience and Dear Donna, which can take up to 1,500 people each on a weekend. There's also cricketer Virat Kohli's Peruvian restaurant Nueva in the capital. Kohli's brother Vikas has a minority stake in Singhal's company. In 2011, Singhal was heading a firm called Alpha-Q that supplied quirky cutlery, crockery and even toilet paper rolls to restaurants across the country. But that business ran its course in a few years. He started Speedx with a seed capital of Rs 90,000. It has closed FY19 with Rs 6.5 crore and a margin of around 13%.New trends like cocktails on tap are helping Singhal. "In a fast-paced bar, you want fresh cocktails on tap. When a bartender pre-batches a cocktail of 30 litres and kegs it, it becomes commercially viable. It also calls for a wellfit bar," he says. Speedx was roped in by Kolkata restaurant Episode One that has Mai Tai and Long Island Iced Tea on tap.Restaurateurs are also embracing the concept of drink more and eat less. Singhal says that of the top 50 restaurant concepts that have opened across India in the last six months, 70-80% are bars or beverage-centric.Next for Speedx are two projects in Goa called Tataki and a Vietnamese beer garden called Pings Bia Hoi.While Speedx relies on stainless steel equipment manufactured in India, they import from Brazil and Italy temperature-control dials and compressors, which spike up the cost. The design cost of commercial bars of 100-120 sq ft comes to Rs 7-10 lakh. Home bars are relatively cheaper, starting at about Rs 1.5 lakh. However, Singhal's current project for a farmhouse in Delhi is opulent: a partially submerged floating bar, with seating around it, that costs about Rs 20 lakh.High net worth individuals keep raising the bar. "We have built a complete round bar on the rooftop of a Mumbai high-rise building which also happens to be a helipad," says Singhal. The highs never cease.
A little over 90% of the promoters' shareholding has been pledged, directly or indirectly, with domestic and international lenders and no new pledges have been created, said Punit Goenka, MD and CEO of ZEE, Saturday. The promoters of Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEE) are now left with around 22% stake in the company. Goenka spoke to investors after disclosures from Russian investor VTB Capital and Essel Group regarding the encumbrance on 10.7% stake in ZEE, in compliance with a circular issued by Sebi. He said none of ZEE's shares was pledged to VTB Capital in the structured arrangement inked in September 2017 and that the loan amount was always included in the loan against shares disclosed to the market. Goenka said that after the sale of 8.7% stake to investor Invesco Oppenheimer and recent sell-off by some lenders, the promoters now owned around 22% in the company. "No additional debt or pledge is created by the promoters," Goenka told investors, clarifying the maturity period of this loan was a little over a year.
Expectations from Q2 earnings are very low, but there was some sort of recovery in September, says Sandip Sabharwal, asksandipsabharwal.com. Excerpts from an interview with ETNOW.The earning season will kick-start next week. There is definitely a slowdown, though there are some green shoots visible in certain pockets. What can we expect in the days to come? This time, the expectations are extremely low. People are pencilling in a very slow growth and may be pressure on margins. There are very low expectations from companies. In our conversation with some of the companies, it seems there was some sort of recovery in September and that should gain steam as we go ahead during the festival season and the third quarter. Finally, yesterday the markets fell as people were disappointed with 25 bps rate cut by the MPC. They were possibly expecting a 40 bps cut but I do not think that is relevant. Even if they had cut by 40 bps, the transmission would not have happened immediately. The transmission is slow and I think they are indicating that they are in an accommodative stance and another 25 bps cut is possible in December as the winter comes and the vegetable prices ease. So, I think it was a good step but since expectations were higher, we saw some disappointment. Almost 50% of the entire upmove generated by the corporate tax cut has been discounted. I believe the markets are reasonably placed. Factors like global weakness also have contributed to the market fall. If we combine all of them, I would not be so negative. I would think the market should start stabilising from next week rather than see a freefall. How are you analysing the metals pack? Are there any triggers or red flags that one needs to be cautious about?Metals is the weakest pocket in the market in my view because metal prices are globally linked and global economic weakness, from China to Europe to the US, is impacting global metal prices. On top of that, we had a very strong US dollar which is normally negatively correlated to metal prices. That also impacted these stocks and the underlying metal prices. Now what these companies were benefiting initially for a few months was the decline of the rupee since metal prices are in dollars. So, if the rupee falls, at least they get cushioned because of that. Now with the recent appreciation of the rupee, that cushion has also gone. Metals is one pocket which needs to be avoided in this market. How are you reading into the commentary from RBI and a whole host of other facts and figures that were revealed? The RBI commentary was pretty fine. They have maintained the accommodative stance which is good. If there is too much of a cut in a very short period of time, if it does not get passed on, that is not good. Last time, RBI cut 35 bps. Most banks passed on 15-20 bps at most. The incremental cuts are much better and secondly, we have to live with the reality that there is a small saving basket in India where the rates are more political in nature. To that extent, in this quarter, given the state election those rates were not cut. RBI has a limited headroom there because they cannot take rates down to the levels which they would ideally like to because of the stickiness of those rates. The good part about the commentary was that RBI Governor also said that they are looking at all large institutions and they are not going to allow any other large ones to fail. This is a very positive statement and to that extent, market reaction to the policy was excessively pessimistic.
Corporate tax rate cuts will spur manufacturing as overseas companies such as Apple, Foxconn and Flextronics are drawing plans to massively expand production in India, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told ET's Surabhi Agarwal, Anandita Singj Mankotia and Romit Guha in his first interview since taking charge of communications, electronics & information technology and law & justice in this term. He also spoke about the upcoming data privacy law and the government's determination to ensure traceability of messages on social media platforms. Edited excerpts:What has been the response to the government's move to cut taxes, especially on new manufacturing units?Practically, we have redone the entire architecture of taxation law as far as manufacturing is concerned. Post early '90s, this is probably the biggest reform initiated by any government. We are already the second biggest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world. Now, even Apple is coming in a big way, Foxconn 2 and 3 are going to be established, initially in Sriperumbudur. Apple reportedly is going to open its biggest state-of-the-art shop in Mumbai, and Samsung is withdrawing from China. The biggest day for me will be to pick up an Apple phone and read, designed by Apple in California, assembled in India, replacing China. I see that happening soon.Samsung already has a very powerful presence in India. We have also already removed the open cell 5% customs duty. We had a meeting with all the top CEOs of the country and overseas. They had this teething trouble… this has been resolved.Consumer electronics is also picking up fast. Some of the other companies who are very keen on India are Flextronics, TCL….What does India offer vis-Ã -vis competing markets?India has a stable government, pro-investment leader, good human resources, a proactive, pro- policy regime and obviously a big market. What next? Does the government have any specific plans for pushing exports? As of now this, corporate tax cut, in itself is massive. Mobile phones already are a success story. Components, consumer and medical electronics are going to be our next focus. Also, ITI has very large land banks which are lying idle. So, as the communications minister, I have asked them to work with those in electronics manufacturing. ITI can lease out huge land tracts.Indian handset manufacturers have had a tough time of late and have been seeking government support…We always stand by our Indian champions. Lava has done a good job, and we will stand with others as well. But they have to become professional and competitive. The industry feels there are still disabilities vis-a-vis some markets like Vietnam. We are exploring ways to address disabilities with Vietnam and China. We are looking for alternatives to M-Sips (Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme). What is the status of the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill?I am very keen to push India as a data refinery – 1.3 billion Indians are generating massive data. The architecture of our data privacy law will soon go to the cabinet. How do you plan to tackle the issue of impersonal data?I have set up a committee under S Gopalakrishnan (Kris). Personal data itself is going to become a very big proposition in the coming future. How many taxis are there in this country? All that is data. Thus, we need to understand that data privacy laws concern the individual and impersonal data is different from that, which can be properly commercially used, exploited and also developed into a big industrial proposition. Therefore, when I talk of data refinery, data processing, data cleaning, this is going to become a huge enterprise in coming years and I want India to become a huge centre in that. But companies won't give up data easily, owing to issues of privacy. That is why the committee is in place. The last word on data is yet to be heard. Let the committee's recommendation come. It might need some legislative intervention because data business is an evolving business. Will there be any changes to the draft PDP Bill before it goes to the cabinet? Some minor changes are possible. It will be consistent with the SC (Supreme Court) judgment on privacy and individual's rights and address the larger issue of data security. Will it take into account concerns of various MNCs on data localisation? That we will consider, and why not. But as far as supersensitive or critical data is concerned, that has to be in India. How hopeful is the government on its demand on traceability? What I have been pushing for is being done by America, England, Australia and others. They are pushing for decryption. Now we have a global support on the matter, as far as law enforcement is concerned, you have to do decryption. I told Facebook's Nick Clegg that I am accountable to my people as law minister and IT minister. They have to share (the origin of the message)… I am only saying in case of mob lynching, communalism, reckless violence, terrorism, you give all ring-fencing. But who is the originator, that they will have to tell. They told us about many of their plans but the issue of (tracing the) origin of the message is still not resolved. Will the social intermediary guidelines come in the next six months? Before that.WhatsApp has gone to the Supreme Court to challenge the issue of traceability even before the guidelines are out. What is the government's medium-term solution to deal with the challenge?Social media has empowered the people of India. Expansion of social media in India is a welcome development. But if anyone uses social media to defame, to abuse, to promote terrorism, to compromise India's security, it is surely a matter to be taken note of and requires intervention.Have you received any response from the finance ministry on the relief measures for the telecom industry? It's a work in progress. Same with BSNL. I am very keen to revive it myself. We are working with the PMO (Prime Minister's Office) – that's all I can tell you. For BSNL to survive and to do well, it has to come up with competitive plans. This kind of human resource load is not acceptable.By when do you expect spectrum auctions to happen? Will they include 5G spectrum? They can happen this fiscal. There is already a recommendation of Trai (telecom regulator). As far as the operators are concerned, they need to be professional, they need to be competitive. Same about BSNL.Has the government taken any decision on Huawei? No, not yet.
Indian Air Force's 1990 hero to find place on War Memorial The decision was taken in the last week of September by the Air Force authorities concerned as the service is fully convinced that his name should have been there.

Several months back, we invited HTC cofounder and CEO Cher Wang to appear on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt. Sometimes, however, life happens. Two weeks ago, the company announced that Wang would be stepping down from the role, which would immediately be filled by longtime telecom vet, Yves Maitres. Thankfully, the former Orange exec also agreed to appear on stage at this week's event.
Maitres took the stage immediately following a one on one with OnePlus cofounder, Carl Pei. The contrast of the two companies couldn't be more stark. In six short years of existence, OnePlus has managed to buck a number of industry trends with a controlled growth that flies in the face of wider industry smartphone trends.
HTC, meanwhile, has been struggling for years. In Q2, the Taiwanese hardware maker posted its fifth consecutive quarterly loss. Last July, it laid off around a quarter of its staff. It's been a precipitous fall. In 2011, the company comprised around 11 percent of global smartphone sales, per analyst figures. Now its figures are routinely classified among the "Others" in those reports.
Speaking to Maitres at an event such as this offers a rare opportunity for insight from a newly minted exec who has spent years watching his new company from the outside. As such, he addressed HTC's struggles with a refreshing candidness.
"HTC has stopped innovating in the hardware of the smartphone," he told the audience. "And people like Apple, like Samsung and, most recently, Huawei, have done an incredible job investing in their hardware. We didn't, because we have been investing in innovation on virtual reality. When I was young, somebody told me, 'to be be right at the wrong time is to be wrong and to be wrong at the right time is right.' I think we've been right at the wrong time and now we have to catch up. We made a timing mistake. It is very difficult to anticipate the time. HTC made a mistake in terms of timing. It is a difficult mistake and we are paying for that, but we still have so many assets in terms of innovation, team and balance sheets that I feel we are recovering from the timing mistake."
'Timing,' here, is primarily a reference to the company's decision to move much of its R&D money into XR (primarily VR through its Vive wing). Maitres said he anticipates that HTC's XR offerings will overtake the mobile side in about five years.
"We'll do our best to make it shorter, but customer adoption is key," he explained. "How people are adopting your technology. And we all know know it is absolutely critical. And the end of the day, we have human beings in front of us, and they're dealing with something total new and totally unusual, which is virtual."
On the mobile side, Maitres sees 5G as the primary bottleneck to growth. Contrary to suggestions that the company's best play is in developing nations, he says HTC's play going forward will be more premium handset focused on "countries with higher GDP."
"The competition is changing," he says. "We're all having a situation where worldwide marketshare is going down and the customer is disappointed in not being to have the latest Huawei phone anymore. How to give our customers the ability to come back to what they wish, in terms of best in class hardware and photography that HTC to will to solve in the next few months."
While figures will largely be dependent on decisions Brough to HTC's board, Maitres maintains optimistic projections when it comes to returning the company profitability.
"I truly believe that it is going to depend on the way carriers deploy 5G," he says. "And you know that 2020 will bee the starting point for 5G. Usually it takes two years to deploy a network. So 2023 will have significant coverage. That's why I believe that 2025, probably even earlier will be the turning point. We are dependent on carrier deployment speed."
If you want to set your movie or game on the Moon, it’s not hard to find imagery of our photogenic satellite. But NASA has just released a useful and beautiful new set of data just for creators that includes not just imagery but depth data, making it simple to build an incredibly detailed 3D map of the Moon.
The CGI Moon Kit comes from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, where science visualization expert Ernie Wright found that data he had assembled for other purposes was proving popular with 3D artists.
The data came from two instruments on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, a spacecraft that has been in orbit around the Moon for more than a decade, snapping pictures and taking measurements the whole time.
A close-up of some of the lunar imagery — not nearly as high-resolution as it gets, though.
On board the LRO is a high-quality “traditional” camera (really a sophisticated multispectral imager), which it has been using to build an amazingly high-quality map of the lunar surface. It can only capture a small portion at a time, but it does so constantly and as its orbit has shifted, it has captured pretty much the entire visible area of the Moon, though some shadowy regions can’t be imaged even after passing over them thousands of times.
Great photographs are only one part of a map, though. If you really want to recreate the surface of the Moon you need information on the topology of its surface as well. And that’s what the LRO’s laser altimeter has been collecting.
The laser altimeter works like any typical orbital laser ranger you have around the house. It sends a pulsed laser towards the surface and tracks both how long it takes to come back and how strong it is. These tell the device how far away the surface is (and therefore its altitude) down to half a meter, and what that surface is like, for instance a hard rocky structure or soft powdered regolith.
That data is assembled into what’s called a displacement map, sort of like a topographic map where instead of the height actually changing, the color does. There are a couple varieties of this map, but the basic use case is the same: You overlay the displacement map on the photographic map, then wrap it all around a sphere — and you’ve got a virtual topographic globe.
Here’s a slower version of the GIF you see above.
This would be really interesting to explore in first person in a game where you build a lunar colony, or maybe have dogfights in spacecraft above a realistic lunar surface. Or maybe an artist could use it to create a model of the Moon like this one.
The CGI Moon Kit is free to download and all the assets are available with a few options that 3D artists will probably understand. You can learn more about it and get it here.
Adam Neumann may be out of the daily flow of WeWork, but he seemingly remains top of mind to some of the company’s bankers.
According to a new Business Insider piece, Neumann is working with JPMorgan, UBS, and Credit Suisse to consider new terms for a $500 million loan that he took out before WeWork filed to go public, and from which Neumann has already drawn down $380 million. Since he can no longer pay the loan with proceeds from selling WeWork shares publicly (it yanked its S-1 filing earlier this week), he may have to put up some of his properties or other assets as collateral for the loan, according to one of BI’s sources.
“No terms have been set,” a spokeswoman for Neumann tells the outlet.
Per earlier reports, Neumann has plenty to offload if it comes to it, having acquired numerous residential and commercial properties over the years.
Among his reported investments is a $10.5 million Greenwich Village townhouse; a farm in Westchester, New York; a home in the Hamptons where he reportedly weathered the storm with his family ahead of resigning as CEO last week; and a $21 million, 13,000-square-foot house in the Bay Area with a guitar-shaped room.
According to an earlier WSJ report, Neumann has also bought several commercial properties through investor groups that he had leased back, in some cases, to WeWork.
WeWork, and Neumann, have both enjoyed a close relationship with JPMorgan in recent years. As recently reported in the NYTimes, JPMorgan “lent Mr. Neumann money personally (with his inflated shares as collateral), provided equity and debt for the company, served as a corporate adviser for the I.P.O. and secured nearly $6 billion in financing as part of the now scotched offering.”
At the very beginning, there were 20 startups. After two days of incredibly fierce competition, we now have a winner.
Startups participating in the Startup Battlefield have all been hand-picked to participate in our highly competitive startup competition. They all presented in front of multiple groups of VCs and tech leaders serving as judges for a chance to win $100,000 and the coveted Disrupt Cup.
After hours of deliberations, TechCrunch editors pored over the judges' notes and narrowed the list down to five finalists: OmniVis, Orbit Fab, Render, StrattyX and Traptic.
Render has created a managed cloud platform. The company wants to provide an alternative to traditional cloud providers, such as AWS, Azure and GCP. And it starts with an infrastructure that is easier to manage thanks to automated deployments and a abstracted way to manage your application that is reminiscent of Heroku.
OmniVis aims to make detection of cholera and other pathogens as quick, simple and cheap as a pregnancy test. Its smartphone-powered detection platform could save thousands of lives.
NASA issues a new formal request for info from industry specifically around spacesuits. The agency is hoping to gather information in order to help it figure out a future path for acquisition of spacesuit production and services from external industry sources.
That doesn’t mean it’s outsourcing its spacesuit design and production immediately – NASA will build and certify its own spacesuits for use in the first Artemis missions, including Artemis III which is the one that’ll see the next American man and the first American woman take their trip to the lunar surface. But for Artemis missions after that, of which there are currently five more proposed (Artemis 4 through 8), four of which will have crew on board.
NASA has of course already worked with private industry, as well as academic institutions and researchers, on the technologies that will go into its own space suits. And the agency fully expects that the current exploration suit will form the basis of any future designs. It is however looking to fully transition their prouduction and testing to industry partners, and will additionally expect those partners to “facilitate the evolution of the suits” and also suggest improvements on the existing suit design.
On top of the suits, NASA is looking for input on tools and support hardware to be used with the suits, during extra-vehicular activities, or in making sure the suits work well with the vehicles that’ll be transporting them, as well as the lunar gateway that will act as the staging ground between Earth and the Moon’s surface.
Finally, NASA also would like to hear from companies about how to better commercialize spacesuits and spacewalks – making them available to customers outside of the agency itself, as well.
This isn’t surprising given how many signals NASA has been giving lately that it’s interesting in partnering with industry more deeply across both Artemis, future Mars exploration, and the ISS (and its potential commercial successor). The full RFI issued by NASA is available here, in case you’re interested in spinning up a spacesuit startup.

Getting India ready for the fourth industrial revolution This week's DNA Newsmaker, Swami Vigyananand, Founder, World Hindu Economic Forum, talks about the need to protect and nurture entrepreneurship to make India a $5 trillion economy. He also gives us an insight into the initiatives taken up by the forum and solving the funding concerns for Indian start-ups
