Over a dozen world leaders gathered in the south of England on Wednesday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
The attendees included Queen Elizabeth II, British Prime Minister Theresa May, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and US President Donald Trump who is on the final day of a state visit to the UK.
Other leaders and senior figures from ten other countries were also due to attend.
Operation Overlord, better known as D-Day, was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Launched on June 6, 1944, it targeted roughly fifty miles of coastline in Normandy, France. D-Day's success guaranteed the defeat of Nazi Germany.
D-Day took more than two years to plan. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had begun discussing the need for a large-scale invasion of Western Europe soon after the United States entered World War II in December 1941. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was also eager for a second front that would relieve the pressure on Soviet troops fighting Germany in the east.

* Social Democrats under Mette Frederiksen are expected to win today's election * The centre-left party supports restrictive immigration, but a strong welfare state * Tough policies on immigration have been adopted by almost all Danish parties * As a result the far-right Danish People's Party has lost its appeal with voters
Denmark goes to the polls in a general election today, with the centre-left Social Democrats predicted to win after adopting the right wing's long-standing tough stance on immigration.
Opinion polls put the party, led by Mette Frederiksen, at 27.2 per cent, a comfortable lead of almost 10 percentage points ahead of Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen's ruling Liberal Party, which has been in power for 14 of the last 18 years.
The polls also indicate that the far-right Danish People's Party, which has informally supported Rasmussen's minority government, could lose almost half its support, shrinking to 10.7 per cent.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican and Democratic U.S. senators said on Wednesday they would try to pass 22 separate joint resolutions that, if passed, would block President Donald Trump's plan to complete $8 billion in military sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates without congressional review.
Backers said the introduction of the resolutions was intended to "protect and reaffirm Congress' role of approving arms sales to foreign governments."
The announcement followed furious rejection in Congress late last month of the Trump administration's declaration that a growing threat from Iran was an emergency that forced it to sidestep lawmakers' review of major arms deals and approve precision-guided munitions, aircraft engines, mortars and other equipment and services for Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Lebanon.

The administration granted the first approval in question Oct. 18, 2018, 16 days after the killing of The Washington Post columnist and Virginia resident at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. The second authorization was granted Feb. 18, 2019, three months after the CIA reportedly concluded that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered Khashoggi's death.

Donald Trump declared his intention to seek a peaceful solution to the Iran crisis, but said he is 'prepared to handle the responsibility' of pressing the red button if he has to.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, the President said he intends to hold discussions with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to deescalate tensions between Iran and the US.
Asked by interviewer Piers Morgan what the current state of Iran-US relations are, Trump said both parties were interested in a meeting to resolve their differences.
In recent weeks, tensions have soared as the U.S. beefed up its military presence in the Persian Gulf in response to an unexplained threat from Iran.

Mass graves: This is not Iraq of Afghanistan, but Ciudad Juarez - Mexico's fourth largest city and literally a stone's throw away from the U.S. Photo from The Daily Mail
As of last year, the Taliban controlled or contested 46 percent of the districts in Afghanistan's civil war. That was enough justification for us to keep our military perpetually engaged there in combat. What if you were told that 80 percent of Mexico's territory is controlled by dangerous cartels, including all of the key smuggling routes at our border, and that the cartels are orchestrating all of the illegal immigration into our territory and bringing their members back and forth across our own border?
Several weeks ago, the Mexican investigative journal Contralínea posted a map of Mexico prepared by the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), showing that 80 percent of the country's 266 districts recently targeted for enforcement by the Mexican National Guard in a new counter-cartel operation are either controlled (57.5 percent) or disputed (23.3 percent) by the cartels. "Only 53 (19.92 percent) enjoy a low level of violence, which means that control is exercised by the authorities," reported Contralínea on May 4, citing the data on the color-coded map.
WNU Editor: This is one of the primary reasons why Lopez Obrador was elected President last year. He was given a mandate to try a different approach to battle the cartels since all of his predecessors have failed.

TAPACHULA, Mexico — They arrived at dusk, dressed for combat, pouring from government vehicles. A phalanx of military and police personnel swarmed a small hotel in the center of Tapachula, this scrappy city near Mexico's border with Guatemala. Their target: undocumented migrants.
Agents rushed door to door, hauling people away, while migrants shouted or ran out the back, scampering over the rooftops of neighboring homes, witnesses said.
It was one of several raids here last week to sweep up migrants, part of a broad Mexican crackdown against the surge of Central Americans and others streaming toward the United States. In recent weeks, the Mexican authorities have been breaking up migrant caravans and setting up round-the-clock roadblocks along common routes north.
The fact that an American, not a Russian, TV channel told the story about our own heroes is a source of shame for pro-Kremlin media.
It seems every major Russian media outlet had to chime in about the "Chernobyl" TV series by HBO. Although the foreign program airs only online to paying viewers, the show has become something of a national sensation in Russia where the pro-Kremlin media have launched a mini-crusade against it.
Komsomolskaya Pravda (KP), Russia's most popular newspaper, raised suspicions that competitors of state-atomic center Rosatom were using the series to tarnish this country's image as a nuclear power.
Argumenty i Fakty, a newspaper popular among the elderly, dismissed the show as "a caricature and not the truth."
.... The fact that an American, not a Russian, TV channel tells us about our own heroes is a source of shame that the pro-Kremlin media apparently cannot live down. And this is the real reason they find fault with HBO's "Chernobyl" series.

Japan’s health and labor minister said Wednesday that it is “necessary” for companies to make women wear high heels at work, the BBC reports.
Speaking to parliament Wednesday, Tamuki Nemoto defended of the gendered footwear practice, which women throughout the country have been campaigning to change.
Nemoto’s comments were made in response to a petition submitted the previous day asking his ministry to ban companies from requiring women to wear certain kinds of shoes to work.
“It is socially accepted as something that falls within the realm of being occupationally necessary and appropriate,” he said.
The BBC reports that another lawmaker, Kanako Otsuji, called the rules “outdated” during the same meeting.
The petition, which had over 23,000 signatures by Wednesday, was started by model and actress Yumi Ishikawa after a Tweet she posted about the issue in January received thousands of retweets and comments.
She took advantage of the momentum and created the hashtag #KuToo to represent the movement (in Japanese “kutsu” means shoe and “kutsuu” means pain). Her campaign sparked a nationwide debate.
The topic has also received attention in other countries. In the U.K., a petition started by Nicola Thorp called on the British government to make mandatory high heels illegal. It received more than 150,000 signatures and led the government committee to determine that company dress codes must be “reasonable.”
Two American women and six children from families with suspected connections to the Islamic State were repatriated from Syria this week, Reuters reports.
Kurdish-led authorities said the eight Americans were sent back to the U.S. Wednesday at Washington’s request.
The Americans were among thousands of wives and children of foreign jihadists taken into custody after U.S.-backed forces captured the last of the Islamic State’s territory in Syria in March, according to Reuters. The detainees were transferred into overcrowded camps that have posed a dilemma for both local officials struggling to detain large numbers of foreign ISIS adherents, and governments reluctant to take back citizens who lived under the caliphate.
The State Department confirmed that the U.S. had “safely recovered” citizens from Syria and is assisting with the repatriation efforts, according to Agence France-Presse. The spokesperson declined to identify the American returnees citing privacy considerations.
The Kurdish administration said the latest repatriations were based on the women and children’s “free and voluntary desire to return to their country.”
Kurdish authorities are hoping to increase the number of detainees being sent back to their countries of origin. Some governments have shown a willingness to take back their citizens, but “only humanitarian causes,” Abdulkarim Omar, co-chair of foreign relations in the Kurdish-led region said, according to Reuters.
On Monday, Norway reportedly repatriated five orphans, and Uzbekistan took back 100 of its citizens last week. France says it will repatriate only orphans, while the U.K. has stripped some ISIS members of citizenship.

But another high-profile case has met resistance. The Trump administration has said that it will not allow Hoda Muthana, who left Alabama for Syria in 2014, back into the country.
Approximately 300 Americans left the States for ISIS or other extremist groups in Syria and Iraq between 2011 and 2017, according to a study by George Washington University’s Program on Extremism.
(COPENHAGEN, Denmark) — The Social Democrats emerged as Denmark’s biggest party in elections Wednesday, with preliminary results indicating gains for left-leaning parties and a big loss for populists.
If confirmed in final returns, the outcome pointed to the Social Democrats returning to power after four years as the country’s leading opposition party.
The Social Democrats got about 25.9% of the votes after a campaign in which party leaders vowed a tough stance against immigration.
Mette Frederiksen, the party’s leader, said late Wednesday that the Social Democrats will try to govern as a minority rather than form a governing coalition with smaller parties. It will seek support from the right on some issues, such as immigration, and from the left on other matters, such as social welfare, she said.
Although Frederiksen won’t try to form a coalition, other left-leaning parties that increased their vote shares will likely support her effort to form a government to avoid the center-right from getting a chance. The Social Democrats and other left-of-center parties appear headed to having one more vote than a majority in the 179-seat parliament, the Folketing.
With nearly 100 percent of the votes counted, the Liberal Party of Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen showed a slight gain from four years ago. But the populist Danish People’s Party, which often voted with the center-right Liberals, was hit with a big drop in support, meaning Loekke Rasmussen can no longer muster a majority in parliament.
The Danish People’s Party’s performance was a contrast to some other European countries, where far-right populists have been on the rise. The party was the second-largest party in the outgoing parliament, but its vote share plunged to about 9% Wednesday, compared to 21.1% in 2015.
Loekke Rasmussen conceded defeat and would resign Thursday.
“You have chosen that Denmark should have a new majority, that Denmark should take a new direction,” Frederiksen said told a jubilant crowd at parliament. “And you have chosen that Denmark should have a new government.”
At age 41, Frederiksen could become Denmark’s youngest-ever prime minister.
“The election campaign is now over. It’s time to find solutions,” she said.
Many Danish People’s Party voters have drifted to the Social Democrats, mainly because of it readopting tough views on immigration. The party advocated restricting immigrants in the 1980s and 1990s but softened its position later while in a coalition with left-wing parties.
Its lawmakers voted for several laws introduced by Loekke Rasmussen’s government to tighten immigration.
“This is really, really bad,” People’s Party leader Kristian Thulesen Dahl said of his loss at the polls, but he said the party would not change its politics.
The Hardliner Course party didn’t cross the 2% threshold needed to enter Parliament. The New Right, another openly anti-Muslim group that also fielded candidates for the first time, will be in the legislature after getting 2.4% of the votes.
Thursday marks the anniversary of D-Day — when, on June 6, 1944, more than 150,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy to liberate Europe from Nazi German control.
It was a moment that changed the course of world events. Given its importance and the inherent drama of the massive military operation, it’s perhaps unsurprising that filmmakers have tried to bring that moment to life on screen — some more successfully than others. Here’s a guide to three films inspired by that deadly day, as recommended by Rob Citino, Senior Historian at the National WWII Museum who also provides expert commentary in a Turner Classic Movies (TCM) special on Hollywood movies about the war.
WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS.
The Longest Day (1962)
Plot basics:
Based on the 1959 book by the same name by Cornelius Ryan, a journalist who conducted over 1,000 interviews over the course of a decade, “The Longest Day is the ultimate D-Day film. D-Day was an absolute epic of a military operation, and this is a absolute epic of a film,” Citino says. “The joke is that it should have been titled ‘The Longest Movie’ because it takes you through virtually the entire run up to D-Day and pre-planning with Eisenhower and virtually everything that happened that day.”
Directors:
Ken Annakin, Andrew Marton, Darryl F. Zanuck, Bernhard Wicki, Gerd Oswald
Notable cast members:
Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, John Wayne
What the movie gets wrong:
One often-quoted line about D-Day — “There aretwokindsofmenon this beach: the dead, and those about to die. So let’s get the hell out of here!” — is said by Col. Norman Cota, played by Bob Mitchum, but in reality, it was uttered by Col. George Taylor.
The final scene, in which the Allies blow a hole in a ridge and storm through it as if they’d broken down the wall of a castle is a bit exaggerated. “They had to filter their way forward in small groups and attack German fortifications and bunkers from their weaker side, from behind,” says Citino.
And civil-rights groups objected to the film. “Not one Negro was seen in the movie,” as TIME reported in 1963. “Normandy’s Negroes, serving in mostly segregated units, worked under fire instead as stevedores and as antiaircraft men who ran up barrage balloons to frustrate enemy air strikes at the beaches. They, like their white comrades in arms, shed blood.”
What the movie gets right:
The film accurately shows how the Allied invasion caught the Germans off-guard: Hitler was sleeping in; Erwin Rommel, the overall commander of the Normandy sector, had gone home for his wife’s birthday; and his fellow commander of the German forces at Normandy, Major Werner Pluskat, panicked as he watched thousands of ships approach, when it was thought that the Allied forces didn’t have enough ships to invade.
The actors are also recreating real things that happened to D-Day troops. For example, the memorable scene, shown above of a paratrooper’s parachute getting caught on the pinnacle of a French church; Pvt. John Steele’s parachute really did get stuck on a church tower in Sainte-Mère-Église, the first village in Normandy liberated on D-Day. German soldiers got him down, and he was taken prisoner, but managed to escape a few days later and catch up with the Allies.
Overlord (1975)
Plot basics: A 20-year-old British soldier named Tom goes through training for D-Day.
Director: Stuart Cooper
Notable actors: Brian Stirner, Davyd Harries, Nicholas Ball
What the movie gets wrong:
The entire story of the hapless British soldier, who gets lost on a training march, falls down a hill and clumsily flirts with women is “kind of random,” says Citino. “He’s a bit of a sad sack, not very good at soldiering. It’s not about what it was like to be a soldier, it’s about what [the war] was like for this soldier. I’m not sure the story is transferable.”
What the movie gets right:
It incorporates archival footage from the Imperial War Museum of daytime air raids, firing at trains and on-the-ground transportation, and a night bombing sequences from cameras mounted in the bombers. Some of the aerial footage was even taken by live cameraman in the aircraft, like renowned pilot Leonard Cheshire, the youngest group captain in the Royal Air Force at the time.
Citino also cites the film’s brutal ending, when, after over an hour of watching him go through the training for D-Day, Tom is immediately shot to death right as the ramp of the Higgins boat goes down. A lot of D-Day soldiers died that way, especially on the parts of the beach where the Americans landed.
Citino argues the film has a “pacifist streak,” reflecting broader anti-Vietnam war sentiment of the mid-1970s by telling the story of young and tender man embroiled in “an impersonal war waiting to chew him up.”
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Plot basics: Capt. John Miller leads soldiers behind enemy lines to find Pvt. James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in action, so the U.S. military can send him back home.
Director: Steven Spielberg
Notable actors: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Paul Giamatti, Vin Diesel, Ted Danson
What the movie gets wrong:
One glaring error, to Citino, is that the German tanks were built using the frames of Soviet tanks. Other critiques of the film point out that the scenes of bullets killing people underwater go against the laws of physics. And after getting things mostly right in terms of historical accuracy in the first roughly 30 minutes, the filmmakers took a lot of creative liberties in the next two hours, in terms of the dialogue and the way the search for Private Ryan was carried out.
What the movie gets right:
The search to send home James Ryan, so that his family would still have one son after his brothers were killed in action, is loosely based on the U.S. military sending paratrooper Fritz Niland back to the U.S. after his brothers Robert and Preston were killed on June 6 and June 7 and his brother Edward was shot down over Burma the month before. After the five “Sullivan brothers” died serving aboard the USS Juneau, which sank in November 1942 during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific, the U.S. military started putting brothers in different units to reduce the likelihood that they would die at the same time; that’s what happened with Niland brothers, from Tonawanda, N.Y., north of Buffalo.
Spielberg enlisted a U.S. combat-Marine-veteran-turned-Hollywood-consultant to make the film look as realistic as possible, from body parts scattered on the beach to wounded soldiers crying out for their mothers — even putting the actors through boot camp, where they got soaked in British rain and mud; Tom Hanks learned how to operate a Thompson submachine gun.
Citino singles out a minor scene that says a lot about how much the Germans were struggling at this point in the war. In the scene, two enemy soldiers who are executed after surrendering to the Allies are speaking Czech, not German. After the German Army overran Eastern Europe, people in those areas were forced or volunteered to fight for the Germans, especially in the later years of the war. Therefore, the scene shows how, at this point in the war, “the German forces are pretty ragtag and dependent upon a whole lot of non-German manpower.”
Perhaps most importantly, D-Day veterans say the opening scenes depicting the landing are realistic, in terms of what it felt like to be a soldier on the beach during the invasion.
It’s basically “100% accurate,” says Dominic Geraci, who was a 20-year-old Army medic tending to the wounded on June 7. “There was no Hollywood embellishment.”
In fact, some say it’s too realistic to bear.
Another D-Day survivor, John Raaen says it was “very good portrayal of Omaha Beach” left him speechless, five decades after he landed there on June 6 as a 22-year-old Army captain. “I remember when I walked out into the lobby of the moviehouse, not a single person coming out of that showing said one word,” he says. “Everybody was stunned by it. I was too. I wasn’t about to talk to anyone either. It just brought back so many memories that your mind was racing through all the things that happened to you.”
(SHANNON, Ireland) — For the backdrop to his first official visit to Ireland, President Donald Trump wanted to promote his golf course on the nation’s rocky west coast. The Irish government countered with the grand staging of an ancient castle.
In the end, neither side got what they wanted. The compromise location for Trump’s meeting Wednesday with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar was the VIP lounge at Shannon Airport, just down the hallway from the food court and duty-free shop.
And the meeting itself was more than just a warm handshake for the cameras, as the two broke sharply on what would be best for Ireland if the United Kingdom were to leave the European Union.
Varadkar has become a vociferous opponent of Brexit, a move Trump supports. Many in Ireland express worry that if the U.K. does leave, a “hard border” will return between Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the U.K, potentially reigniting sectarian tension that lasted for decades and sometimes exploded into violence.
“Probably you’ll ask me about Brexit because I just left some very good people who are very involved with Brexit, as you know,” Trump said in the leaders’ meeting. “And I think it will all work out very well, and also for you with your wall, your border.”
Varadkar quickly retorted: “I think one thing we want to avoid, of course, is a wall or border between us.”
“I think you do, I think you do,” Trump responded. “The way it works now is good, you want to try and to keep it that way. I know that’s a big point of contention with respect to Brexit. I’m sure it’s going to work out very well. I know they’re focused very heavily on it.”
Trump also has one other stop during his two days in Ireland, and it’s not the capital of Dublin or the famed Cliffs of Moher. Rather, it’s his own golf course in Doonbeg, where he will sleep for two nights amid the commemorations of the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
The White House initially proposed that Trump meet Varadkar at the course, as part of the president’s unprecedented blending of government affairs and business advertising. But the Taoiseach’s office balked and proposed a more historic site before settling on Shannon.
Trump denied Wednesday that he was simply trying to tout his golf course.
“This trip is really about great relationships that we have with the U.K. and I really wanted to do this stop in Ireland,” he said when asked about Doonbeg. “It was very important to me because of the relationship I have with the people and with your prime minister.”
The airport lounge was hardly the usual setting for a first meeting of two heads of state, though Shannon Airport does boast of the world’s first duty-free shop. It also is a regular stopover for American officials on international flights, since its location on the eastern edge of the Atlantic Ocean makes it an ideal refueling spot for far-flung trips.
Trump arrived Wednesday after participating in a multinational ceremony in Portsmouth, Great Britain , which followed his two-day United Kingdom state visit in London. On Thursday, he’ll commute from Doonbeg to the D-Day ceremony in Normandy, France before returning to Ireland for another 24 hours of golf and relaxation.
Many presidents — from John Kennedy to Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama — have been hailed as heroes in Ireland, which has strong ties to the United States and is the ancestral home for millions of Americans. But Trump’s quick, mostly-hidden-from-view visit will likely earn him little reaction at all.
His unusual, limited itinerary will keep him far from much of the protests that awaited him in Ireland. Though some protesters set up a “peace camp” not far from the Shannon airport, the main demonstration was set to take place 120 miles away in Dublin, where the infamous Trump baby balloon is expected to be flown again.
But the reception in Doonbeg, a village of 262 people, was expected to be much warmer. The president’s 400-acre hotel and golf course, which sits above the Atlantic’s waves, is a large employer in the area, and many who call Doonbeg home believe it benefits economically from the visitors.
The Trump Organization has poured tons of millions into Doonbeg since it bought the resort in 2014 but it has yet to make a profit.
The club has been hurt by shutdowns during renovations over the years, but expected to start making money in 2017. Instead, it posted operating losses that year and, according to unaudited figures provided by the Trump Organization, did again the following year.
As is the case in Trump’s two money-losing Scottish resorts, Doonbeg has stunning ocean views but has also, at times, been a lightning rod for controversy. Though the civic clashes in Ireland have not been nearly as nasty as those around Trump’s golf course in Aberdeen, Scotland, plans to build a wall to stop rising sea levels were fought by local residents. Environmentalists worried it would damage dunes and a public beach in the area.
The club also wants to build a ballroom, a “leisure facility” with a restaurant and 53 homes for visitors on its property, but has to wait for local government review and approval for that, too.
Losses notwithstanding, the financial trends for the Irish resort appear to be heading in the right direction. Operating losses last year were a third of those a year earlier.
The golf courses are predominantly run by the president’s two adult sons, Eric and Donald Trump Jr., who did not take administration jobs but plan to reprise their 2016 roles as campaign surrogates for their father’s upcoming re-election bid. The two were also part of a retinue of adult Trump children who were highly visible during their father’s state visit to London, helpfully sharing images of their adventures on social media.
Traveling to Cuba just got tougher for Americans. The U.S. departments of Treasury and Commerce announced new restrictions Tuesday that include travel bans for cruise ships and group tours from the U.S. effective Wednesday, June 5.
The rules target the primary ways Americans travel to the island nation, which was closed to most U.S. travelers for decades until former President Barack Obama eased travel restrictions in 2016.
“Cuba remains communist, and the United States, under the previous administration, made too many concessions to one of our historically most aggressive adversaries,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, in a statement released Tuesday. “The Trump Administration recognizes the threat Cuba’s government poses in the region, and the Commerce Department is acting to limit commercial activity that provides revenue for the Cuban regime. Holding other countries accountable remains a focus for this Administration and we will remain vigilant.”
Travelers who booked airfare before June 5 are exempt from the new rules. But cruise ships with scheduled stops in Cuba are already changing their itineraries. The restrictions also include halting corporate and private aircraft traveling to Cuba.
What do the new Cuba travel restrictions do?
The restrictions effectively stop all cruise travel from the U.S. to Cuba, and stop all “people-to-people” group tours, one of 12 visa categories Americans can use to travel to the country. It permits groups of Americans to travel for group educational tours.
The Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) said cruise lines are eliminating all Cuba destinations from their itineraries, affecting nearly 800,000 passengers.
CLIA estimates about 200,000 people have traveled to Cuba on a cruise so far in 2019.
Norwegian Cruise Line issued a statement to customers saying it suspended all stops in Cuba and is modifying all future schedules that included the country.
Royal Caribbean has also suspended all travel to Cuba and is securing new ports. It promised passengers the option of remaining on their cruises with the revised itinerary and a 50% refund, or the option to cancel their cruise and receive a full refund.
Carnival has also begun to change its routes away from Cuba, and promised passengers $100 onboard credit, the chance to change their itinerary and receive $50 onboard credit or the option to cancel their cruise for a full refund.
Travel agencies across South Florida immediately began to feel the pinch of the new rules. Gabriela Consuegra, the manager of Miami travel agency Tocororo Travel, says she let out a sigh when she heard the news of the new restrictions on Wednesday morning.
Over the course of eight years, Consuegra says Tocororo has seen many changes in travel policy to Cuba through two different U.S. administrations.
“It’s been a roller coaster,” she says. “All the time, we have to be alert.”
Consuegra says she is already receiving dozens of questions from clients. Although Tocororo has a large number of clients who book cruises to Cuba, Consuegra believes her agency can survive the financial impact because most of the clientele travel to Cuba on a visa to visit family.
Michael Zuccato, the general manager at Cuba Travel Services, which organizes shore excursions to Cuba, believes the restrictions will have also have an impact on his business.
“Any time you have changes like this it definitely impacts a business,” he says. “That business, from one day to the next is gone.”
In addition to stopping cruises, the new restrictions end “people-to-people” travel visas, which are used by most cruise travelers and group tours.
Collin Laverty, president of Cuba Educational Travel, which organizes groups under the “people-to-people” category, expects a short-term decline in business until Americans learn of new ways to travel the Cuba through other visa categories.
“Unfortunately Cuba, and Cuba travel is somewhat of political football,” he said. “You kind of have to wait until the dust settles. Obviously it’s difficult for anyone working in Cuba travel.”
Can Americans still travel to Cuba?
The short answer is yes, Americans can still travel to Cuba, but they face larger barriers to entry.
Many American tourists who traveled under the “support for the Cuban people” category in the visa application––another common choice––will now have to provide an itinerary that includes meetings with local Cubans, attending cultural events and staying at a Cuban family’s home, a “casa particular,” instead of a hotel.
“I think that’s an avenue that many Americans will use to visit the island,” Laverty says. “I sense that we will see a downturn in ‘people-to-people’ travel and we’ll see a lot of Americans travel under the ‘support for the Cuban people’ category.”
Americans with family in Cuba are not impacted by the new restrictions. Americans can still also travel to Cuba for business or humanitarian purposes.
What to do if you have already planned a trip
Tourists who have already planned a trip to Cuba need to check with their cruise line, travel agency or airline to find out if itineraries have changed or been canceled.
Commercial airlines have not been restricted from traveling to the country.
In 2018 there were more than 8,500 flights from the U.S. to Cuba carrying nearly 900,000 passengers, according to the U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economic Council.
“Don’t panic,” Consuegra says. “In all these changes to politics with Cuba, people usually panic and it’s completely normal, but from my side, knowing how things actually work, it’s not always as bad as it may appear.”
Consuegra says as long as travelers have documentation that they booked their trips before June 5, most should still be fine to travel to Cuba.
Local leaders originally intended it to be a humble ceremony of remembrance for the surviving combatants of Europe’s finest hour. But the presence of glittering royals and heads of state at Portsmouth’s D-Day commemoration on Wednesday turned the event into a far more formal — and occasionally contentious — affair.
President Donald Trump, whose first state visit to the U.K. had been organized to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in 1944, took pride of place next to Queen Elizabeth II in the royal box. The sometimes emotional ceremony marked the day when more than 75,000 mostly British, American and Canadian troops departed from this city in southern England toward the beaches of France, in what would become a turning point in the war against Nazi Germany.
Alongside Trump were representatives of at least 16 nations including British Prime Minister Theresa May, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Before the ceremony started, residents of Portsmouth told TIME they were skeptical of whether the presence of so many world leaders would actually benefit veterans, who are now all aged in their 90s or beyond. Security had to be ramped up significantly, with extra police officers sent from across the country.
“When we originally planned the event, this was going to be an opportunity for the veterans to meet the Queen, probably for the very last time,” said the leader of Portsmouth city council, Gerald Vernon-Jackson. “It was going to be a very open event for the public to watch and attend. Now it’s a very different thing.”
Each of the world leaders had signed a “D-Day Proclamation” in which they pledged to “work constructively as friends and allies to find common ground where we have differences of opinion and to work together to resolve international tensions peacefully.” But amid the military flypast, speeches from veterans, and commitments from political leaders to work together and never forget that historic sacrifice, the event served to highlight political divisions apparent in the host country.
May, overseeing the proceedings, is scheduled to resign as leader of her country this summer after being forced out over Brexit. Trump, who haltingly read a short commemorative prayer by FDR, had seemed much more comfortable two days earlier dining in opulence in Buckingham Palace — despite protests on the streets of London against his visit. Macron, whose popularity has waned amid the Yellow Vest protests, apparently felt comfortable enough to depart from the script of the mostly stage-managed affair to say a few words: “Let me first thank you, sincerely, on behalf of my nation.”
Yet for the most part, politics took a backseat on Wednesday to the military parades, historical reenactments and readings of wartime documents. May read from a letter written by Captain Norman Skinner to his wife Gladys two days before D-Day: “I’m sure that anyone with imagination must dislike the thought of what’s coming, but my fears will be more of being afraid than of what can happen to me,” she read. “You and I have had some lovely years which now seemed to have passed at lightning speed.” Captain Skinner died in the assault.
Les Hammond, one D-Day veteran aged 94, told TIME on Southsea Common that he was happy so many heads of state were there to commemorate him and his fallen comrades. “I feel the top brass, the important people, they represent us,” he said. “I don’t feel in any way that we are second class [compared to them]. I’m very much a royalist.” What about Trump’s presence, though? On that, Hammond was diplomatic. “Do I have to tell you?,” he asked with a wry smile.
Hammond was one of more than 250 veterans attending D-Day commemorations in Portsmouth on Wednesday; he is part of a dwindling group of men and women who can remember a time when Britain faced an existential threat from abroad.
Historians and social scientists often say that war memorials are just as much about fostering a national narrative as they are about remembering the fallen. But in a Britain divided by Brexit, that sense of national identity is less secure than ever. In that context, what else is there to do but stand in awe of the human sacrifice of those 75,000 troops who piled into boats on June 6, 1944 to save Europe from Nazi rule, and the few survivors who represent that generation?
“It’s quite emotional I suppose,” said Hammond, the veteran, eyes welling up. “I didn’t think I’d feel like this, but I do.”
(LOS ANGELES) — The leader and self-proclaimed apostle of La Luz del Mundo, a Mexico-based church with branches in the U.S. that claims over 1 million followers, has been charged with human trafficking and child rape, California officials announced Tuesday. Joaquín García and a follower of the church, 24-year-old Susana Medina Oaxaca, were arrested Monday after landing at Los Angeles International Airport, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s office said.
Around 1,000 worshippers gathered at the headquarters of La Luz del Mundo in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on Tuesday evening to pray for García as he was held in Los Angeles on $25 million bail.
García, 50, faces 26 counts of felony charges that range from human trafficking and production of child pornography to forcible rape of a minor. The charges detail a series of disturbing allegations involving three girls and one woman between 2015 and 2018 in Los Angeles County.
The fundamentalist Christian church, whose name translates to The Light of the World, was founded in 1926 by García’s grandfather. It has been the subject of child sex abuse allegations for years but authorities in Mexico have never filed criminal charges. It has more than 15,000 churches in 58 countries, according to its website. The church’s followers must adhere to a strict moral code in exchange for the promise of eternal salvation.
García — who was a minister in Los Angeles and other parts of Southern California before becoming the church’s leader — coerced the victims into performing sex acts by telling them that refusing would be going against God, authorities said. He allegedly forced the victims, who were members of the church, to sexually touch themselves and each other. One of his co-defendants also allegedly took nude photographs of the victims and sent the pictures to García.
García told one of the victims and others in 2017, after they had completed a “flirty” dance wearing “as little clothing as possible” that kings can have mistresses and an apostle of God cannot be judged for his actions, the complaint states.
“Crimes like those alleged in this complaint have no place in our society. Period,” Becerra said in a press release. “We must not turn a blind eye to sexual violence and trafficking in our state.” The attorney general’s investigation began in 2018, prompted in part by a tip to the state’s Department of Justice through an online clergy abuse complaint form.
David Correa, a spokesman from the church’s headquarters, said in a phone call that they learned about the charges from the media. “We categorically deny those false accusations,” Correa said. “We know him personally and he is an honorable and honest man.”
Church officials said García has always behaved lawfully and rejected the attorney general’s charges.
The church’s statement Tuesday said they hoped the accusations would not lead to discrimination and religious intolerance against its followers.
A third follower, Alondra Ocampo, 36, was arrested in Los Angeles County and is being held at the sheriff’s Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood ahead of her arraignment Wednesday in Los Angeles. A fourth defendant, Azalea Rangel Melendez, remains at large.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the defendants had an attorney.
In May, an opera concert at Palacio de Bellas Artes, the main cultural venue in Mexico, generated controversy because in some places it was presented as a tribute to García. Critics said a secular state such as Mexico shouldn’t use a public place for that purpose. The work, “The Guardian of the Mirror,” was broadcast on social networks and screened outside the Palace, with the church’s followers in the audience.
La Luz del Mundo denied that it was an homage and said the opinions expressed in social networks were not promoted by the institution.
Airport police referred media inquiries to Customs and Border Patrol, which did not immediately have a comment.
(BERLIN) — A former nurse on trial on allegations he killed 100 patients at two hospitals in northern Germany apologized to his victims’ relatives in a final statement to the court Wednesday, saying he realized how much pain and suffering he had caused with his “terrible deeds.”
“To each and every one of you I sincerely apologize for all that I have done,” Niels Hoegel, 42, told the Oldenburg regional court after his defense attorneys had made their closing arguments, according to the dpa news agency.
His defense attorneys argued for acquittals in 31 of the 100 counts of murder against him, suggesting there was not enough evidence in those cases.
In total, the deaths — which took place at a hospital in Oldenburg between 1999 and 2002 and another hospital in nearby Delmenhorst from 2003 to 2005 — are thought to be the largest string of serial killings in post-war Germany. Hoegel’s alleged victims ranged in age between 34 and 96.
“Neither we nor Mr. Hoegel deny that he is the perpetrator in many cases,” one of his defenders, Ulrike Baumann told the court. “But he can only be convicted for crimes he committed and not for crimes he could have committed.”
Hoegel was convicted in 2015 of two murders and two attempted murders. He said at his first trial that he intentionally brought about cardiac crises in some 90 patients in Delmenhorst because he enjoyed the feeling of being able to resuscitate them. He later told investigators that he also killed patients in Oldenburg.
Authorities subsequently investigated hundreds of deaths, exhuming bodies of former patients.
Pleas are not entered in the German legal system but during the seven-month trial, Hoegel admitted to 43 of the killings, disputed five and said he couldn’t remember the other 52.
Both the defense team and prosecutors have asked for a sentence of life in prison, but prosecutors have also asked the court to recognize the “particular seriousness of the crime,” making it likely he’d have to serve more than the standard 15-year sentence.
Prosecutors are asking for a conviction on 97 counts of murder, saying that in three cases insufficient evidence was presented.
During the trial, Hoegel testified that he had a “protected” childhood, free of violence. He said his grandmother and his father, who were both nurses, had been his role models for going into the profession.
“Now I sit here fully convinced that I want to give every relative an answer,” Hoegel said during the trial. “I am really sorry.”
But Christian Marbach, a spokesman for the affected families whose grandfather was among the victims, doubted Hoegel’s sincerity.
“Hoegel is and remains a liar,” Marbach said. “He tactically only admitted what could already 100 percent be proven against him.”
The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 kicks off in Paris on Friday. From new teams to new kits to a new host, here’s your cheat sheet for this year’s tournament.
Eyes of the world
Women’s soccer is more popular in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world. The dominance of the men’s game nearly everywhere else was the reality Germany’s women archly pointed up in a video noting that the prize for the first of their eight European championships was a tea set. But the rest of the world is finally starting to catch on to the excellence of the women’s game. In April, FIFA reported more than 720,000 tickets had been sold, over 50,000 more than at the same point for the previous World Cup, and the opening match sold out within 48 hours. TV viewership promises to be in the hundreds of millions; in Europe, national broadcasters like the BBC are showing more of the matches live on mainstream channels.
A star stays home
You wouldn’t have expected to see a men’s World Cup without luminaries like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. But the women’s tournament will be missing the first winner of the Ballon d’Or Féminin, given to the best women’s player in the world: Norway’s Ada Hegerberg. The 23-year-old striker for Lyon scored a record number of goals in the Women’s Champions League last season. But in an act of protest over how her country’s federation treats the women’s game, she stopped playing for Norway. Hegerberg’s absence dims the star wattage in France–along with her country’s chances.
Four teams are making World Cup debuts: Scotland, Chile, South Africa (above) and Jamaica. Chile has a rough path in Group F, where the top-ranked U.S. is expected to dominate. Scotland will face local rival England, which is riding high after this year’s triumph in the SheBelieves Cup. However, the Lionesses are wary of a slip-up, with English winger Karen Carney telling the BBC before the group draw, “I wouldn’t want [Scotland]. They’d have a lot of fans coming over, and the rivalry can be a leveler.” The top two teams from all six groups, as well as four third-place teams, will pass through to the knockout rounds.
Home cooking
Though France’s women have never won a major tournament, Les Bleues (above) are consistently among the favorites, particularly this year. On top of home-field advantage, almost a third of the squad plays for Olympique Lyonnais, far and away the most dominant women’s team in Europe, with 13 consecutive domestic league titles and four Champions League trophies in a row. The team’s stars include French captain Amandine Henry and vice captain Eugénie Le Sommer. But their Lyon teammates–like Canada’s Kadeisha Buchanan, England’s Lucy Bronze, Germany’s Dzsenifer Marozsan and Japan’s Saki Kumagai–populate the rosters of the competition.
Fresh looks
For the first time in the women’s game, many of the players’ kits will feature a unique design rather than being a copy of the country’s men’s uniforms. There are still a few unis that replicate the men’s designs–notably Nigeria’s, whose green-and-white zigzag pattern with black patterned sleeves echoes the men’s jersey that was so popular at last year’s World Cup. Other, more original throwback styles include Germany’s ’90s-inspired pattern by Adidas and Australia’s green, white and orange “brushstroke” look. Also notable is France’s hexagon-speckled away uniform, complete with matching socks.

MOSCOW: China's Huawei, considered a security threat in the US, on Wednesday signed a deal with Russian telecoms company MTS to develop a 5G network in the country over the next year,The agreement was signed on the sidelines of a meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping & Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The deal will see "the development of 5G technologies and the pilot launch of fifth generation networks in 2019-2020", MTS said in a statement.Quoted in the statement, Huawei's Guo Ping, said he was "very happy" with the agreement "in an area of strategic importance like 5G".The Chinese telecom giant has been in turmoil since May, when the Trump administration banned US companies from selling high-tech equipment to Huawei over suspicions it is spying for Beijing.Experts say the US decision, to come into force within three months, threatens the survival of the company, which is highly dependent on US chips for its phones.Several companies have already distanced themselves from Huawei, including Google, whose Android system equips the vast majority of smartphones in the world.Huawei's reported potential involvement in Britain's 5G network has proved politically sensitive and Theresa May's government insists no decision has been made on the issue.
By Omkar GoswamiMadam Finance Minister, Congratulations on taking charge of a critical portfolio. I wish it would have come at a better time.Tabling a Union Budget a month & some days after taking over is difficult. It will deprive you of the time needed to fashion a fiscal framework as you contemplate hundreds of proposals that your senior bureaucrats shall table for your consideration. Your predecessor faced the same problem in 2014 — leading to him present a directionless first Budget replete with small allocations across various programmes without any overarching fiscal purpose. Moreover, your first Budget will be presented under a grim scenario. India's GDP growth has slipped to a 20-quarter low of 5.8% in January-March 2019. The growth rate for 2018-19 has dropped to 6.8%. Add to that an unemployment rate of 6.1%, which is at a 45-year high.Don't presume any immediate growth uptick across Asia's emerging markets. China's growth is shrinking. Going by our corporate results for 2018-19, India will also see a downturn in growth over the first two quarters of this fiscal year, especially if we face a drought. While crude oil prices aren't necessarily firming up, don't anticipate a large dip, given growing tensions in the Persian Gulf. So, expect a current account deficit (CAD) exceeding 2.5% of GDP. In such a challenging milieu, here are some suggestions that you might wish to consider.First, your government has a superbly efficient minister for road transport in Nitin Gadkari. Significant road construction — be it national and state highways, village or urban roads — is a must for the economy. It is also the largest employment creator. You should increase this budgetary outlay. Ask Gadkari how much he can execute between July 2019 and March 2020 and a quarter thereafter; what additional expenditure he needs; and earmark that in your Budget.More Than Loose ChangeSecond, given agrarian distress, you must allocate more under three major heads. The interim Budget earmarked Rs 75,000 crore for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PMKISAN), the scheme that aims to give Rs 6,000 per person per year to 12 crore small and marginal farmers. You should raise that to Rs 1,00,000 crore and increase the coverage of farmers. And ensure that at least twothirds of this is distributed by December 2019.The interim Budget allocated Rs 60,000 crore under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). 2019-20 and 2020-21 will be the years to significantly step up on the scheme — to give the poor muchneeded money and also create an upsurge of rural employment. Raise NREGA allocation to Rs 1,00,000 crore. You might need to increase the food subsidy, which has been pegged at Rs 1,84,220 crore. With the threat of drought and rural hardship, push that to Rs 2,00,000 crore. Hopefully, you won't spend all of it.Third, tone down the tax revenue estimates. A sputtering economy cannot generate 13.5% increase in gross tax revenue as anticipated in the interim Budget; or a 13% hike in corporate tax collections; a 17% rise in personal income-tax receipts; or an 18% growth in goods and services tax (GST). Pare these down to a growth rate averaging 10% — 6% on account of real GDP growth and 4% due to inflation. Thus, peg gross tax revenue to about Rs 24,73,000 crore, instead of Rs 25,52,131crore in the interim Budget. That will increase the fiscal deficit. Thus my fourth point. Part of the hole can be plugged by a systematic focus on divestment. This is where NDA-1, as well as the UPA governments, have failed miserably. It is high time that real efforts are made in this area.Let me give you an example of the potential. A bankrupt textile unit of the United India Mills has an enormous property on Caddell Road in Mumbai, covering a massive block from the road to the sea. Nobody works there. All you have are rusted equipment, cobwebs and a sea-facing guesthouse for lord knows what. If you, along with your colleague Smriti Irani, put that on the block, the government should get a huge chunk of revenue. There are dozens of such examples. Just press the accelerator on divestment. And, as a starter, raise disinvestment receipts from Rs 90,000 crore to at least Rs 1,50,000 crore.Greater divestment alone won't plug the gap. My fifth point is that you should consider giving the fiscal deficit target of 3.4% of GDP a miss for a year. Don't get misled by fiscal purists, or your bureaucrats. We badly need to reflate the economy.Kind CutThere is a French phrase, 'L'audace, l'audace, toujours l'audace' (Audacity, audacity, always audacity). It is that which made John Maynard Keynes what he was. Adopt it.Finally, don't expect a rate cut or two by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to lift the economy. Rate cuts may be necessary, but hardly sufficient.Count such rate cuts taken by the Bank of Japan and see what good it did to growth. Ditto the euro zone. Come July 5, I hope you will succeed.
BENGALURU: Indian IT service providers may not be impacted by the Japanese govt's recent decision to restrict foreign ownership in high-tech companies, according to industry body Nasscom.Japan has restricted foreign ownership in its information and communication sector effective August 1, primarily to ensure a strong cyber security framework."Our companies do not have much revenue from Japan, but they have been acquiring some companies there. So, prima facie, it appears that the regulation may not have an adverse impact. We hear that it may not be retrospective," Gagan Sabharwal, senior director, Global Trade Development, Nasscom, told ET.Once the rule comes into force, it may create an additional watchdog to reinforce strong regulations, Nasscom said.Japan has traditionally been a tough market to crack for Indian firms. In recent years, IT providers such as TCS and Infosys have formed joint ventures with local entities to tap the market. Infosys said in December it would acquire 81% stake in Hitachi Procurement Services, a subsidiary of Hitachi.
MUMBAI: Courts and banks should expedite the resolution process of Essar Steel, which has been going on for more than 20 months, said Sajjan Jindal, chairman at JSW Group that failed in its bid to acquire the prized steelmaking assets through the bankruptcy court. In an exclusive interview to ET, Jindal conceded that the entry of European steel giant ArcelorMittal, which has won the race for Essar Steel, will bring discipline in the Indian steel market and make it more organised. He, however, felt the near-$10 billion (Rs 69,272 crore) cheque that the Lakshmi Mittal-led ArcelorMittal may be writing for Essar Steel — accounting also for the price it will ultimately pay for ports, pipelines and Uttam Galva's dues — may not be viable. If JSW were to acquire Essar Steel, even an offer worth $5 billion would have been a tad too steep, Jindal said."...but beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder," he said.Jindal, however, warned that delaying the handing-over of Essar Steel might force Lakshmi Mittal to change his mind. "Given that there are global headwinds to the steel industry and with ArcelorMittal's global presence, its margins are under tremendous pressure," he said. "At this stage if the courts and the banking system continue to delay the matter then my worry is that ArcelorMittal may find some way to get out of the deal."JSW Steel had actively participated in the sale of stressed assets that the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code has facilitated. However, it could not bag the asset it wanted the most — Bhushan Steel — which would have given the company a five million tonnes ready steel capacity and a foothold in the east market. Rival Tata Steel won the race for Bhushan Steel.Defending his seemingly conservative approach in bidding for Bhushan Steel, Jindal said though JSW Steel felt it had bid the "top dollar" for the asset, Tata Steel ended up bidding higher than they could have anticipated.69669596 'Govt Should Fix Liquidity Crisis'"It is because their investment per tonne is higher than our investment per tonne that they paid more," he said. After losing out on Bhushan Steel, JSW Steel had also tried to enter the fray for Essar Steel, but by that time "it was too late", Jindal said. A failure to submit expression of interest on time kept his firm out of the contest for the Hazira-based fully integrated flat carbon steel maker with a capacity to produce 10 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).Out of the crop of 12 highly stressed steel assets sent for insolvency proceedings, JSW Steel has bagged Monnet Ispat and Energy. It also pipped Tata Steel in bidding for Bhushan Power and Steel, though the final order on its acquisition is still awaited.Apart from aggressively expanding its steel capacity that is estimated to reach 40-50 mtpa by 2025, the $14-billion JSW Group is also diversifying into newer, consumer-facing businesses. In 2017, its power arm JSW Energy had announced a plan to enter the electric vehicle industry. However, in March this year, JSW Energy announced it has abandoned the plan due to "high uncertainties associated with the business"."We were very keen to pursue the business, but then, later on, we realised that we don't have the core competency in that and also the technology for it is still developing and a lot of changes might still take place," Jindal said. He confirmed that talks of acquiring General Motors' Talegaon plant for the project had been "almost finalised".69669601 Asked whether he would review his decision to enter the EV space, Jindal said, "Never say never." He, however, conceded that it is difficult to look at the business again in the future. For now, the group is focusing on entering the retail household consumers through its newly launched paints and furniture businesses that require smaller investments.ON LEVERAGEJSW Steel, the flagship company of the group, currently sits on net debt of almost Rs 46,000 crore. It has announced brownfield expansions of both its Vijaynagar and Dolvi plants and is also doubling its value-added capacity.Jindal said with all the investments going towards newer capacities, this year the company's Ebitda multiple might stretch in comparison to its net debt, but it will get corrected next year when these projects start earning. The company's net debt to Ebitda ratio is 2.4x currently.Jindal also said that over the next six months, he plans to wind down his share of pledged holding that currently stands at close to 50%.Much like other captains of India Inc, Jindal also batted for the government to "fix" the liquidity crisis. He also exhorted the government to set a target to grow at 12% by announcing big-ticket projects and boosting spend on infrastructure as it would create more jobs.He also said the government should only control strategic assets such as oil and gas, and nuclear power, while others like steel, aluminium and airlines should be given in the hands of the private sector or strategic investors that could run them more efficiently.Jindal said if the state-run National Aluminium Company (NALCO) and Steel Authority of India (SAIL) were put on the block, he would certainly have a look at it.He said by 2025, close to 95% of JSW Steel's targeted 40-50 million tonnes assets will come from India while the rest will come from the global assets. "After that, we have not yet made plans and they will depend on the demand in India, how it is growing and what is the role of other steel companies," Jindal said.
NEW DELHI | MUMBAI: The department of telecommunications (DoT) plans to oppose the sale of airwaves held by bankrupt telcos during the insolvency resolution process, a move that will make Aircel and Reliance Communications less attractive to buyers and hit their lenders.A senior DoT official told ET that the department will take all legal steps, including moving the Supreme Court if necessary, to ensure that that the resolution professional doesn't get the right to sell spectrum during the bankruptcy proceedings. To begin with, DoT is expected to state its position at the ongoing hearings of the Aircel bankruptcy process at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT)."DoT's view is that this spectrum belongs to the government and it does not come under the definition of property of the telco," said this official. The department believes that the government is the licensor of the airwaves and is the only one authorised to sell it through auctions, according to existing law. More so, since spectrum is a finite and sovereign asset, it makes the government the sole authority responsible for allocating it, the official explained.'Legal Opinion Being Sought'"A legal opinion is being sought... All legal options are also being explored," said a second official aware of the matter. The DoT is of the view if the spectrum is sold by the resolution professional under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016, the value will be far less than the market price of airwaves. In addition, the sale proceeds will first accrue to banks and other financial lenders, with operational creditors like the DoT way down in the priority list, in terms of getting paid.69669676 "We're examining what should be the way forward…whether this category of transaction can be removed from IBC," the second official said. One of the officials said that if NCLT, which is the dedicated insolvency court, were to give a decision on the lines that spectrum could be sold by the RP managing the bankrupt telco, the government would be "within its rights to move the Supreme Court".The move assumes huge significance as the result of the decision will affect the insolvency, bankruptcy and revival proceedings of defunct carriers Aircel and Reliance Communications. Without the prized airwaves, the companies would have little value, or perhaps no value at all, to potential buyers. In addition, the outcome in this issue could impact sectors such as mining as well.UV Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd. (UVARCL), which has put in a bid with Aircel's RP Deloitte to take over Aircel, will argue forcefully against the DoT's view. "The spectrum is part of the other assets that will be with the company. The DoT cannot take away the spectrum," said a person aware of the development."We are bound by confidentiality obligations and are unable to comment on client-specific matters," a Deloitte spokesperson said, while UVARCL said it "can't comment at this stage". The NCLT will next hear the Aircel matter on June 10.The NCLT will next hear the Aircel matter on June 10 while the next hearing on RCom is scheduled for June 21.The NCLT appointed interim resolution professionals (IRPs) of RCom — which has a debt of Rs 46,000 crore — and two of its subsidiaries have admitted claims of about Rs 66,000 crore against the companies. Aircel, on its part, has a debt of about Rs 20,000 crore.Mails to RBSA Advisors LLP, IRPs of RCom and its two units didn't elicit a response till the time of going to press.Manoj Kumar, partner at insolvency specialist firm Corporate Partners, backed DoT's stance."I believe, legally, DoT is right. The spectrum is a government property and the telecom operators are just licensees. If the licensees are not able to use it or can't pay a fee, the spectrum licence may be revoked," Kumar said.Kumar said that the final decision on such an issue will have wider ramifications for sectors beyond telecom, such as mining."Similar situation may arise in all the cases where the key asset is government licences, like mining licence. If insolvency licences are revoked, then there would be little hope of resolution and there will be huge haircuts," he said.
NEW DELHI: Hotel chains in India across the hospitality sector — which have for long been at the receiving end of terror attacks — are sprucing up their security systems and revamping safety arrangements following the serial bombings across hotels in Colombo in April and an attack in a luxury hotel in Pakistan last month. While Shangri-La said it is consulting local security and law enforcement agencies following the attack on its hotel in Colombo and is regularly training its emergency response teams, Hyatt said it recently partnered with Safehotels AG to inspect and assess security at its hotels in India which are operating at an enhanced security status."Following the attacks in Sri Lanka, we took immediate steps to raise the alert state at all our hotels in South Asia. In India, specifically our hotels have been operating at an enhanced security state…it is normal to see the screening of vehicles and people take place at hotels in India," said Trevor Gannon, director, global security, Europe, Africa, Middle East and South West Asia.A series of bomb blasts ripped through high-end hotels such as Shangri-La and churches in Sri Lanka in April which killed nearly 300 people. According to some media reports, one of the eight attackers of the Colombo attacks had initially planned to detonate their device at the Ports of Call restaurant at Taj Samudra in Colombo, but the bomb failed to go off at the property. 69669792 Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), which bore the brunt during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, declined to comment. A Hilton India spokesperson said the company continues to remain vigilant on its safety and security systems and processes."Most chain hotels continue to enhance measures based on threat perceptions. It is an ongoing effort as the primary focus is the safety of their guests and staff and also preventing a loss to their infrastructure. It is important that the respective state governments also put in adequate measures to ensure security and safety within their boundaries," said Ajay Mahtani, senior VP, Asset Management at HVS Anarock.Park Hotels said it has increased the budget for security measures wherein security equipment such as X-ray baggage scanner, door frame metal detector, closed circuit TV cameras, communication equipment and access control have been improved."As a consequence of the terror attacks on hotels and other such bombings across the globe lately, the security measures at THE Park New Delhi have been relooked into and enhanced," said Rohit Arora, area general manager at THE Park New Delhi on Parliament Street."Every city has its own cultural idiosyncrasies; hence, customised risk assessment takes care of the microscopic details. Moreover, the modus operandi of terror attacks need not be the same. Therefore, contingency plans have to be more updated than ever, and two steps ahead of the perpetrators. This is ensured by means of training sessions held for the security personnel," Arora explained.Softbank-backed Oyo announced last week that it had hired senior security professionals to boost safety measures across its properties. Oyo said it had hired captain Shakil Ahmed, former head of global security, South Asia, at Pfizer as VP of security and risk. Annie Wig, who had previously worked at IndiGo, was hired by the company as director of emergency response.
US stocks gained on Wednesday after data showed that the private sector added fewest jobs in May since 2010, raising the odds that the Federal Reserve would cut interest rates to counter a potential slowdown.Private-sector jobs rose by 27,000 last month, according to the ADP National Employment Report, much below expectations of a 180,000 increase. The data, which comes ahead of a more comprehensive nonfarm payrolls from the Labor Department due on Friday, increased the likelihood that the U.S. central bank would cut interest rates by at least 75 basis points through December."The ADP number does raise some concerns about the further impact of tariffs. It adds to the case of interest rate cuts, the odds of that happening are going up," said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James in St. Petersburg, Florida.Interest-rate sensitive banking stocks slipped 0.88%, while the broader financial sector fell 0.31%.The report comes a day after Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said the central bank would respond "as appropriate" to risks posed by a global trade war, adding to expectations after dovish remarks from St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard. The escalation in the trade dispute between the United States and China last month has triggered worries of a global economic slowdown and has put the benchmark S&P 500 index 5% away from its record high of 2,954.13 hit on May 1.The technology sector, among the hardest hit by the sharp rise in trade tensions, rose 1.36% and boosted markets. The sector was supported by near 2% gains in Apple Inc and Microsoft Corp.At 9:39 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 134.04 points, or 0.53%, at 25,466.22. The S&P 500 was up 13.50 points, or 0.48%, at 2,816.77 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 50.74 points, or 0.67%, at 7,577.86.The energy sector slipped 0.52%, and was the only other S&P sector trading lower, as crude prices declined on higher U.S. inventories.Among other stocks, Salesforce.com Inc rose 3.95% after its quarterly revenue and profit beat analysts' estimates and the company forecast full-year results above expectations.Campbell Soup Co jumped 6.5%, the most on the S&P index, after the food company raised its full-year profit forecast after better-than-expected quarterly earnings.Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.77-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.53-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P index recorded 28 new 52-week highs and one new low, while the Nasdaq recorded 29 new highs and 12 new lows.
Gold futures have bounced back above the $1,300 level on the back of renewed trade war fears. The US has targeted Mexico now and will implement 5 per cent tariffs until they stop the flow of illegal immigration into the US, Donald Trump said. Gold prices saw reflection of risk-off sentiment, while silver also jumped, but not as much as gold. The divergence between gold and silver can be seen by gold-silver ratio, which is at a multi-year high, implying silver is undervalued compared with gold. Past spikes in this ratio have preceded precious metals bull markets in which silver outperformed the yellow metal. In the silver market, speculators are aggressively short. The last time they were this much short was in November when silver was at the $14 level and then we saw the rally till $16. Now at $14.30, silver speculators are as much short.69665598 69665606 This chart will give an idea about aggressive money managers net short position.69665618 It is not surprising that silver prices have struggled this year compared with the gold as money managers are so much short. Given speculators' tendency to move from an extreme positioning to another, silver's speculative positioning could deteriorate further to revisit its most bearish level in September 2018. Although if we look at the chart, in spite of heavy sell positions, silver prices failed to sustain below $14. Even as silver looks cheaper than gold, money managers are not inclined to buy on dips as they prefer safe haven characteristics of gold than silver. Our cautious view towards silver is playing out looking at heavy speculator sell positions. We are not stating that silver has bottomed out as there are chances of speculators tendency to move from November low's to September's low, but there are chances that any short covering may trigger rally in the prices like we saw in November 2018.So traders with aggressive shorts should not wait for prices to move below the $14 level, but cover their positions as historically we have seen when many traders move in same positions, market goes on the other side.
