* The D-Day invasion sent roughly 156,000 Allied troops into Nazi-occupied France beginning on June 6, 1944. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history and a turning point in World War II that came at a catastrophic human toll. * By the end of the Normandy campaign that began 75 years ago, hundreds of thousands of Allied and Axis soldiers and civilians had died and been wounded. * The greatest risks were borne by American troops who seized clifftop artillery, set up defensive balloons to defend comrades from aerial attacks, and arrived in the first wave.

Former British spy Christopher Steele, the author of the anti-Trump dossier of salacious and unverified claims about the president's ties to Russia, has agreed to be questioned by investigators from the United States, according to a report in Britain.
The Times (UK) cited sources close to Steele on Tuesday in reporting that the 54-year-old is set to be interviewed in London within weeks. The development comes as attention has returned to the dossier authored by Steele -- especially since its more sensational claims were not substantiated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whose report found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.
Somewhere Hugo Chavez, who several years ago successfully repatriated much of Venezuela's gold, is spinning in his grave.
It started in March, when Venezuela's embattled leader Nicolas Maduro defaulted on a $1.1 billion gold-backed loan with Citi, in the process losing several tons of gold placed as collateral by Venezuela's central bank after the deadline for repurchasing them expired. Now, Bloomberg reports that Venezuela has also defaulted on a gold swap agreement valued at $750 million with Deutsche Bank, prompting the German bank to seize the precious metal which was used as collateral, and close out the contract.

We cannot know for sure what Chinese Communist Party luminaries, including Chinese president Xi Jinping, are thinking about on today of all days. But there are hints.
When soldiers of the People's Liberation Army opened fire on protestors at Tiananmen Square thirty years ago today, Western observers were quick to predict that the regime of the Chinese Communist Party would soon implode.
Who could blame them? Like with the Arab Spring protests of early 2011, it seemed at the time that an unstoppable tide of freedom and vitality was sweeping over the world. On the same day as the Tiananmen Square massacre, Solidarity stormed to victory in Poland's legislative election, setting the stage for the fall of Communism in that country. Mass demonstrations were underway in Hungary, and revolutions would soon sweep over the entirety of the Eastern Bloc.
WNU Editor: First things first. On this day President Xi does what all other past Chinese Presidents have done in the first week of each June .... they keep a low profile, few if any public appearances, and definitely no major announcements. The fact is that everyone in China knows what happened 30 years ago, especially to those who 50 years or older. And while I do not know what President Xi is thinking, I do have a very good idea on what most senior officials in China feel about that terrible week 30 years ago. They feel it was justified to maintain order, but they are all sickened by the thousands who were killed and injured, and doubly so because it occurred in a square that all Chinese believe represents the soul of the country. They also know that one day there will be an accounting for what happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989, and their only hope is that when it does happen, it is far in the future where almost everyone is long gone.
Thirty years have gone by since the world watched the Tiananmen Square massacre in China. So why must we remember the events of June 4? It's a deceptively simple question, says academic Perry Link.
We remember June 4 because Jiang Jielian, a student protester who was killed by the military on that day in 1989, was 17 at the time. He is still 17. He will always be 17. People who die do not age.
We remember June 4 because the lost souls that haunted human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo until he died will haunt us, too, until we do.
We remember June 4 because the glint of bonfires on bayonets is something one does not forget, even if one did not see it personally.
We remember June 4 because it taught us the essential nature of the Communist Party of China when all of the clothes, every shred, falls away. No book, film, or museum could be clearer.
KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan's opposition on Tuesday rejected a plan by its military rulers to hold elections within nine months, a day after the worst bout of violence since President Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in April.
At least 35 people were killed on Monday when security forces stormed a protest camp outside the Defense Ministry in central Khartoum, said doctors linked to the opposition.
The Transitional Military Council (TMC) that has ruled since Bashir's ousting canceled all agreements reached during talks with the main opposition alliance on setting up a transitional administration. The sides had agreed on forming a parliament and a government that would prepare for elections after three years.
* Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's sister, seen for first time since US summit collapsed * She appeared at mass games in Pyongyang where she clapped along to display * But brother was unhappy, criticising organisers for 'irresponsible work attitude' * Comes after rumours she had been sentenced to hard labour after US talks failed
Kim Jong-un's sister has been seen in public for the first time in months after she disappeared from view shortly after talks between the US and North Korea failed.
Kim Yo-jong was seen sitting near her brother at Pyongyang's May Day stadium for North Korea's mass games, where she clapped along to the display in images published today.
But her brother was less than happy, criticising organisers for their 'irresponsible work attitude', saying they had the 'wrong spirit of creation'.
Kim ordered 'important tasks' to be undertaken to make sure North Korea's policies on revolutionary art were correctly implemented, the country's state-run news agency said.

Recent ballistic missile launches have not altered Seoul's interpretation of Pyongyang's compliance with a military agreement.
Speaking in Singapore during the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual conference on defense issues, South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo offered an assessment of North Korea's May 2019 tests of multiple short-range ballistic missiles.
Asked by The Diplomat whether the missile tests had violated the September 19, 2018, inter-Korean Comprehensive Military Agreement, Jeong ruled out any concern, saying that "the North Koreans are in fact acting within the boundaries of the CMA."
Jeong noted that South Korea was continuing its analysis of the missiles that North Korea launched, observing that they resembled the Russian-made Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile.
* June 4, 2019, marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party's crackdown on Tiananmen Square, where thousands of people gathered to protest against the government. * Armed Chinese troops mowed down hundreds of mostly unarmed protesters, and continued to patrol the city for days afterward. * On June 5, 1989, American photographer Jeff Widener took an iconic photo of a man standing in front of an army convoy to block its path. He became known as "Tank Man." * Today, China continues to crack down on any images or mention of the incident.
In the early hours of June 4, 1989, the Chinese Communist Party sent a column of tanks and armed troops into Beijing's central Tiananmen Square to clear out thousands of protesters.
The demonstrators — mostly students — had for months occupied the area as a way of pressuring the government into greater democracy and liberalization.
Soldiers were, under newly-imposed martial law, given permission to "act in self-defense and use any means to clear impediments," ABC News reported, citing Tiananmen historian Wu Renhua.
China is incredibly powerful, but its leaders remain afraid of losing that power. And hardly anything scares them more than the echoes of Tiananmen.
China's officials have used every tool at their disposal to muzzle criticism of the crimes the country committed at Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, but on the 30th anniversary of the massacre, the events the government has tried for decades to erase from the pages of history are deservedly back in the spotlight.
It's not a moment too soon. Despite international condemnation, China has not stopped its war on the truth, or its crackdown on free speech. The Tiananmen anniversary inevitably focuses the world on a fundamental truth about one of the biggest global superpowers: Despite China's spectacular economic success, its leaders rely on widespread repression to secure their grip on power.

China has stepped up security around Tiananmen Square in central Beijing - exactly 30 years after unarmed pro-democracy protesters were killed by troops and tanks sent by the government on the plaza.
Extra checkpoints and street closures greeted tourists who showed up before 5am to watch the daily flag-raising ceremony at the square. An honor guard marched across a barricaded road and raised the Chinese flag as the national anthem played.
The tight security served as a reminder of the government's attempts to quash any memories of the crackdown on the night of June 3-4, 1989, when hundreds and possibly thousands of people were believed to be killed.
Turkey will not take a step back from S-400 missile deal with Russia, President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan said on June 4.
"There is an agreement. We have determination. It is out of the question to take a step back from it [S-400 deal]," ErdoÄŸan told reporters in Istanbul.
Turkey decided in 2017 to purchase the S-400 system following protracted efforts to purchase air defense systems from the U.S. with no success.
However, U.S. officials have advised Turkey to buy the Patriot missile system rather than the S-400 system from Moscow, arguing it is incompatible with NATO systems.
Ruling military council says it will hold elections within nine months as crackdown on protesters draws condemnation.
Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) has decided to cancel all agreements with the main opposition coalition and will move ahead with elections to be held within nine months, its head has said.
The announcement by Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in the early hours of Tuesday came after security forces fired live ammunition to clear the main protest site outside the military headquarters in Khartoum, the focal point in the demonstrators' months-long struggle for civilian rule.

Jeremy Corbyn this afternoon delivered a firebrand speech to anti-Donald Trump protesters in London - obliquely accusing the President of 'creating a sense of hate' and fostering racism.
In an extraordinary speech for a politician who could one day have to work with Mr Trump, the Labour leader did not mention the President by name but played on familiar themes of his critics in a high-energy speech.
Mr Corbyn also sprung to the defence of London Mayor Sadiq Khan one day after he was called a 'stone cold loser' by Mr Trump - and suggested the President had 'created a greater sense of hate and hatred'.
The 70-year-old politician who hopes to one day become Britain's prime minister spoke as tens of thousands of protesters failed to turn up to anti-Trump demonstrations today which had been billed as a 'carnival of resistance'.
WNU Editor: From the videos that I have seen, a few tens of thousand activists did show up. I am not surprised. This is London after-all. But it is not the 250,000 that many in the media were saying yesterday would show up.

The Australian Federal Police raided the Sydney office of Australia’s public broadcasting company on Wednesday.
The search is believed to be in connection to a 2017 article published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation which detailed potential war crimes, including the killing of children and unarmed men, by Australian special forces in Afghanistan, reports the New York Times. The article was based on leaked military documents.
John Lyons, Executive Editor of ABC News and its Head of Investigative Journalism, gave a play-by-play on his Twitter account, including photos of the police search warrant, an update on ABC’s lawyer’s attempts to push back and photos of the police reviewing ABC emails on a large screen in what appears to be a conference room.
David Anderson, ABC’s Managing Director issued a statement saying the raid raised serious concerns about freedom of the press, and reaffirming ABC’s supports for its journalists.
“The ABC stands by its journalists, will protect its sources and continue to report without fear or favor on national security and intelligence issues when there is a clear public interest,” said the statement.
The Times reports that it is illegal for government officials to disclose classified information, which allows the police to investigate, and although journalists do have some legal defense related to protecting sources, courts are able to overrule those protections if it is in the public interest.
The search comes a day after the police searched the home, computer and mobile phone of journalist Annika Smethurst, a politics editor for several of News Corp’s publications, including the Sunday Telegraph and the Herald Sun, in relation to a 2018 story which exposed the government’s consideration of a plan to spy on citizens.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemned the search of Smethurt’s apartment as “intimidation” which “poses a great threat to journalists’ independence and to respect for the confidentiality of their sources.”
A school in India’s northeastern Assam state is now requiring students to pay for tuition in plastic waste they collect.
Each of the 110 students at the Akshar Forum school must bring 20 plastic items to school a week in order to attend, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Attendance was previously free, but the initiative was started after a request for parents to participate in a recycling program failed, according to AFP. Parents have also been asked to promise not to burn plastics.
AFP reports that Dispur, the town where the school is located which has a population of under one million people, creates 37 tonnes of garbage a day.
“The use of plastics is rampant across Assam,” said Parmita Sarma, one of the project’s co-founders said, reports AFP.
The project’s founders say that it is helping to raise awareness in the community.
“Earlier, we used to burn the plastics and we had no idea that the gas emitted from that was harmful to our health and environment,” Menu Bora, the mother of one student, said, according to AFP. “We also threw these away in the neighborhood. But that would never happen again.”
The students use their haul to make ecobricks, plastic bottles packed with other plastic waste to make them dense enough to be used for construction. The material can be used for infrastructure like new school buildings and paths.
The students are also paid to make ecobricks, according to AFP, which helps encourage them to come to school.
(KHARTOUM, Sudan) — Organizers of the pro-democracy protests in Sudan say the death toll across the country since the violent dispersal of their sit-in in Khartoum earlier this week has increased to 60.
The previously reported death toll stood at 40.
The Sudan Doctors’ Committee says security forces killed at least 10 people on Wednesday in the capital, Khartoum, and its twin city of Omdurman.
That came after another 10 people were killed on Tuesday, including five in the White Nile state, three in Omdurman and two in Khartoum’s Bahri neighborhood.
The doctors’ committee is the medical arm of the Sudanese Professionals Association, which has been spearheading protests against army rule.
On Monday, security forces broke up the protest camp outside military headquarters in Khartoum, posing a new challenge to the protest movement.
Senator Tim Kaine said the first approval — called an 810 authorization — was granted by the Department of Energy on October 18, 16 days after Khashoggi was killed, and another was given on February 18. Khashoggi, who was a columnist for the Washington Post and an outspoken critic of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), disappeared in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October where he was brutally murdered.
Kaine took to Twitter to say that he has “serious, serious concerns” about the administration’s dealings with the kingdom.
Why is President Trump so eager to give the Saudis exactly what they want, when they want it?? I have serious, serious concerns. https://t.co/F6RRpyubqG
An 810 approval allows for the transfer of technology or information related to nuclear activity overseas. The Trump administration has granted seven 810 approvals to U.S. companies since 2017 to aid Saudi Arabia in building its first two nuclear power reactors, according to Reuters.
Reuters reports that the Department of Energy kept information in the two 810 approvals confidential, although they are normally public. The Department of Energy did not comment on why the companies related to the approvals have not been released, according to Reuters, but it did confirm the timing.
Despite a CIA assessment concluding that MBS ordered Khasshoggi’s killing, Trump has refused to speak out against the Crown Prince or cut business dealings with the kingdom.
In late May, the Trump administration bypassed Congress by announcing an emergency provision to push through the export billions of dollars of weapons to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.
“Chief Mouser” Larry the Cat briefly stole the show during President Donald Trump’s visit to the U.K. Tuesday, after deciding to rest under the President’s limo.
Larry, a famous cat who lives around 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister of Great Britain, is know as the “Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office.” He’s used to national attention and crashing press conferences — he photobombed Trump’s photo-op with Prime Minister Theresa May earlier the same day. But this time, his antics caused a brief delay in the President’s schedule until he finally decided to move out from under “the Beast,” Trump’s security limo, according to journalists who photographed the furry scene.
Huge security issue as Larry the Downing St. cat shelters under Donald Trump’s limo ‘’the Beast’ & refuses to move. #TrumpinUKpic.twitter.com/i9w4B6w8FK
Larry has been living at 10 Downing Street since Feb. 2011 after being recruited from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home for his exceptional mouse hunting skills, according to his official bio.
“Larry spends his days greeting guests to the house, inspecting security defenses and testing antique furniture for napping quality,” it reads. “His day-to-day responsibilities also include contemplating a solution to the mouse occupancy of the house. Larry says this is still ‘in tactical planning stage.'”
Larry’s relaxing break under “the Beast” happened midway through Trump’s three-day visit to the U.K. to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the 1944 D-Day landings. Trump has met with Queen Elizabeth II, members of the Royal Family and held a joint press conference with May while on his visit.
Others, including London Mayor Sadiq Khan, have also attempted to impede Trump’s visit, if not so literally. Thousands of protesters have also been marching against the President — even parading with the infamous ‘Baby Trump’ balloon — but none successfully completed as sly a sit-in as Larry.
Thousands of protestors gathered in central London’s Trafalgar Square on Tuesday to show their anger over U.S. President Trump’s visit to the U.K. Meanwhile, Trump dismissed the protests as “fake news” during a press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May.
He insisted that he’d only seen “thousands of people” who had been cheering during his visit, and a “small protest” earlier Tuesday. “So a lot of it is fake news, I hate to say,” he said.
As the President sat down for discussions with British Prime Minister Theresa May at Number 10 Downing Street, protestors marched from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square with placards which spelt out their disdain for Trump. “Stand up against Trump”, “Make racists afraid again”, “Dump Trump” were some of the messages being raised in the crowd.
“When refugees are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back” thousands of protestors show their anger for Trump’s state visit to the U.K. #StopTrumppic.twitter.com/jkMqvw9hOG
While thousands turned out, the protests were significantly smaller than the anti-Trump demonstrations that emerged during the President’s visit to the U.K. last July. About 250,000 people flooded the center of London, and an estimated total of 400,000 people protested across the U.K, resulting in a large-scale police and security operation, in which more than 10,000 police officers were deployed.
The demonstrations brought together a range of campaigners focusing on issues such as women’s rights, climate change and refugee support. Handmaids Against Trump, a women’s rights group, stood dressed in red cloaks and white hats, with solemn expressions. Their placards read “The Handmaid’s Tale is not an instruction manual” and “Beware for I am fearless therefore powerful”.
Susan Paxton, a Handmaids Against Trump activist and a doctor who specializes in women’s reproductive health, criticized the President’s appointment of conservative justices. She tells TIME that such appointments “undermine women’s reproductive rights” and called the recent abortion ban in Alabama “disgusting”. Trump has spoken openly about his opposition to abortion and promised to only appoint “pro-life” judges.
Another protestor and environmental campaigner Joel Benjamin says the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement “undoes a post-war legacy of international cooperation and governance to protect the environment”. In June 2017 Trump announced that the U.S. was pulling out of the 2015 Agreement, which fights global warming by accelerating investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future.
Eva Bonham, 68, an activist from the environmental group Extinction Rebellion, held a placard that read “Trump has pissed off grandma”. Bonham travelled from Derby, some 130 miles northwest of London, to protest not only against Trump’s climate change denials, but also because he’s “separated children from their families, he’s putting up a walls, he’s divisive. We want strong relations with America but we don’t approve of Trump.”
Humanities student, Nayana Prakash, 25, says that with the U.K’s upcoming elections “a lot of people are concerned about how British politicians, like Boris Johnson, appear to support Trump and how that reflects on our own politics.” Johnson is one of 12 candidates to become leader of Britain’s ruling Conservative party.
Yesterday, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were greeted by the monarch at Buckingham Palace on the first day of their three-day state visit. The President called The Queen “the spirit of dignity, duty, and patriotism that beats proudly in every British heart” while the Queen praised the enduring alliance between the U.K. and the U.S.
In the backdrop of the ceremonial welcome, controversy stirred over a row between Trump and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. The President unleashed a series of tweets calling the Mayor “dumb” and “incompetent” before Air Force One touched down in the U.K.
Even ahead of President Trump touching down in the U.K., activists went above and beyond to show Trump that he’s not welcome in the U.K. An anti-Brexit group “Led by Donkeys” used large-scale images projected onto London landmarks to protest Trump’s visit. On Monday afternoon Led by Donkeys projected an image of President Obama’s approval ratings compared to Trump’s on the Tower of London. Obama had a 72% U.K. approval rating, while Trump had a 21%, according to YouGov statistics cited by the group.
Hi @realDonaldTrump. Just so you know, you’re wildly unpopular here in Britain. SAD! People REALLY don’t like you (though they love @BarackObama). Hope you like seeing your FAILING approval numbers projected onto the Tower of London. #TrumpUKvisitpic.twitter.com/oT332Fd6fE
The group also projected a video of Brexit supporter Boris Johnson criticizing Trump onto Big Ben. “I think Donald Trump is clearly out of his mind,” Johnson says in the clip, speaking about Trump’s proposed Muslim ban.
A large security operation has been in place with over 2,500 officers deployed. “This is a multi-faceted security operation, and whilst the Met [police] has a responsibility to ensure the right to peaceful protest, this needs to be balanced with the complex requirements of this policing plan,” according to a press release issued on Saturday June 1. Nearly 2,600 officers were deployed, the Metropolitan Police tweeted yesterday.
2,591 officers have been deployed to police the visit of President Trump in London today (Monday, 3 June) to ensure the safety and security of the public. If you have any concerns or questions, please have a chat with one of our officers who will be happy to assist. #TrumpUKVisit
But activists hope Trump won’t be able to ignore the 20 foot blimp depicting the President as a baby in a diaper that has been flying 30 foot in the air above the protesters.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has ambitions of being Prime Minister within months, led the protests and delivered a speech in Parliament Square. After boycotting the royal banquet on Monday, Corbyn said the demonstration was a chance to “stand in solidarity” with those Trump has “attacked in America, around the world and in our own country,” in a tweet.
Tomorrow's protest against Donald Trump's state visit is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with those he's attacked in America, around the world and in our own country – including, just this morning, @SadiqKhan.
Benjamin says he thinks less people protested because of work commitments. Last year’s protests fell on Friday, which may have made it easier for people to take time off work, he says. “I don’t think it matters whether there are thousands or hundred of thousands. What we symbolise, opposition to Trump, is the same,” Benjamin says.
The 2019 Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders shows how hatred of journalists has degenerated into violence and created “an intense climate of fear” worldwide.
According to the Paris-based nonprofit, 12 reporters have been killed so far this year and 172 are in jail. In the last decade, according to the group, 702 journalists have been killed, including 63 last year.
“The number of countries regarded as safe, where journalists can work in complete security, continues to decline, while authoritarian regimes continue to tighten their grip on the media,” the report states.
Myanmar ranks 138th of 180 countries evaluated on media independence, laws, abuses and other factors. Norway, Finland and Sweden are seen as the most free. The U.S. is 48th, dropping three spots since 2018. Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan are at the bottom of the list.
Reporting under authoritarian rule
Many countries in the lower third of the Press Freedom Index are authoritarian regimes in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
In these places, which have few protections for free speech, media organizations are weak and often depend on the government for advertising. Journalists typically are poorly paid and have little training.
In this environment, reporters who upset the government are at risk.
As head of the University of South Carolina’s Newsplex initiative, I have trained journalists all over the world, many from countries with restrictions on free speech.
I always have been struck by the similarities among journalists, regardless of country. They are curious, they like to help people, and they want their work to have impact.
What is different, though, is the environment in which those journalists work.
In strong democracies like those of Europe, the United States and parts of Latin America, journalists aspire to uncover the facts and to hold the powerful accountable. They are shielded by centuries-old traditions and laws that protect freedom of speech.
In young or weak democracies, there are few if any protections. Journalists are seen by the government and to some extent by society as partners in the country’s development. As in authoritarian countries like China or much of the Middle East, stories that question or embarrass the government are often suppressed.
Journalism under siege in Myanmar
Myanmar is a case study of the tensions between authoritarian regimes and truth-seeking journalists.
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, was a military dictatorship from 1962 to 2011. While it has begun to move toward democracy, the military retains significant control over this Southeast Asian nation of 53 million.
Myanmar is largely Buddhist and the government has little tolerance for the country’s Muslim minority, called the Rohingya. Since late 2016, the Rohingya have been victims of what the United Nations describes as “ethnic cleansing” by the government.
A 2017 report from Doctors Without Borders, a humanitarian organization, said it is likely that the Myanmar military has killed more than 10,000 Rohingya.
The Reuters journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, were arrested for investigating the deaths of 10 Rohingya men and boys. Their conviction for violating the Official Secrets Act – a British colonial-era law in Myanmar that treats virtually all government information as confidential – shows how the country attempts to silence criticism.
In 2013 I was at the World Newspaper Congress in Bangkok, where I heard Burmese journalists talk about their hopes and concerns.
The installation of a civilian government in 2011 was a positive sign, and the Myanmar government had recently allowed privately-owned newspapers to operate for the first time in 50 years. Change was coming, and I sensed a spirit of optimism in the air, though it was still not clear who really held power in the country.
The journalists wondered if the limited press freedom they had experienced would continue, and they worried over how to find and train journalists in a country without a history of independent media.
Perhaps most importantly, they asked, how could they convince those in power that society is best served by a free press?
In 2015, hopes for democracy soared with the election of Aung San Suu Kyi – a Nobel Prize-winning democracy activist who spent 15 years under house arrest for opposing the military dictatorship.
Instead, an estimated 800,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to neighboring Bangladesh since she took office in 2016, and at least 43 journalists have been arrested, according to Human Rights Watch.
Myanmar’s limited democracy
The travails of being a publisher or journalist in a developing country can be seen through the experiences of Dr. Than Htut Aung, and his Eleven Media Group, one of Myanmar’s leading publishers.
Since then, things haven’t gotten any easier for him or his company. Reporters and senior editors have been charged by the government with defamation, contempt of court and publishing incorrect information, generally for exposing or alleging government corruption and public malfeasance.
In 2016, the government even sued Dr. Aung for a column in which he questioned how a government official got an expensive watch and whether he had ties to shady business figures.
Myanmar’s press crackdown has attracted global attention.
“Rather than punishing investigative reporting that is designed to safeguard the public interest, officials in Myanmar should acknowledge the role of independent media as a necessary support to democratic institutions,” wrote the World Association of Newspapers.
Journalists in countries like Myanmar have little hope if they are working in isolation.
In May, editors from Myanmar and other countries in the region gathered in Singapore to form an Asian chapter of the World Editors Forum, which defends press freedom and promotes editorial excellence. Led by Warren Fernandez, the editor of Singapore’s The Straits Times, the collaboration could lead to training, more professionalism and more legal protections for journalists in Myanmar and neighboring countries.
Beyond the region, worldwide pressure led to the release of Lone and Oo, who were awarded a 2019 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting, a significant honor for two journalists doing their jobs under very difficult circumstances.
(KATHMANDU, Nepal) — Mount Everest and its surrounding peaks are increasingly polluted and warmer, and nearby glaciers are melting at an alarming rate that is likely to make it more dangerous for future climbers, a U.S. scientist who spent weeks in the Everest region said Tuesday.
Prof. John All of Western Washington University said after returning from the mountains that he and his team of fellow scientists found there was lot of pollution buried deep in the snow, and that the snow was surprisingly dark when they processed and filtered it.
“What that means is there are little pieces of pollution that the snow is forming around, so the snow is actually trapping the pollution and pulling it down,” All said in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital.
All and his team spent weeks testing snow on Everest and its surrounding peaks, as well as plants on the foothills.
“The warming temperature is melting the glaciers and the snow around Mount Everest very quickly, so what happens is even when there is a storm it melts in a couple of hours,” he said. “The glaciers are retreating dramatically because of global warming.”
He said because the glaciers are getting thinner and smaller, it is making it more dangerous for climbers.
The team had been planning to climb both Everest and sister peak Lhotse, but crowding on Everest forced them to change their plans. They climbed up to the last camp at 8,000 meters (26,240 feet), the last point the two mountains share, and only reached the top of Lhotse.
Hundreds of climbers had lined up on May 22 and 23 to attempt to reach Everest’s summit, creating a traffic jam that is being blamed for the deaths of several climbers.
All said it was too risky for his team to collect samples with that many climbers moving very slowly.
The scientists said the samples and data would be processed once they return to United States, and they would then issue a report on their findings. They had done similar research in the area in 2009.
“Overall, the past 10 years have seen a lot changes in the mountains, and they all have been for the negative environmentally in terms of long term survivability of the glaciers,” All said.
The Chinese government issued two travel alerts to its citizens Tuesday, warning of rising levels of violent crime in the U.S. and harassment of Chinese visitors by American authorities, in the latest escalation of political tensions between the two countries.
“Recently, U.S. law enforcement agencies have repeatedly harassed Chinese nationals travelling to the U.S. through border interrogations, drop-in visits and various other means,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on social media.
The country’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism meanwhile urged Chinese tourists to “improve their awareness of safety and security” in light of “shootings, robberies and thefts [that] have occurred frequently in the United States.”
A day earlier, China’s Education Ministry said Chinese students were having increasing trouble obtaining U.S. visas, urging them to assess the “risk” of choosing to study in the U.S.
Chinese visitors to the U.S., including tourists and international students, contribute more money to the U.S. economy than any other group of foreign travelers, spending $36.4 billion last year, according to the National Tourism and Travel Office. Numbers of monthly visitors from China have fallen slightly in 2019, partly as a result of a stronger dollar making vacations in the U.S. more expensive.
Relations between the U.S. and China have worsened steadily in recent months as trade disputes – and the Trump Administration’s blacklisting of Chinese technology giant Huawei – have sparked broader political tensions.
On Tuesday, China rebuked U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over his remarks on China’s human rights records ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protest, during which communist authorities killed an unknown number of student demonstrators.
Pompeo accused China on Monday of “[abusing] human rights whenever it serves its interests”, citing recent persecution of the Uighur Muslim minority in the western Xinjiang region.
A Chinese embassy spokesman in Washington D.C. called his comments “an affront to the Chinese people”.
The center of one of the densest metropolises in the world fell momentarily quiet Tuesday night, as well over a hundred thousand people gathered in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park bowed their heads and held flickering candles to observe a minute of silence commemorating the bloodshed around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.
For the last 30 years, Hong Kongers have held an annual march and candlelight vigil to remind the world of the night the Communist Party unleashed its tanks in response to protesters calling for political change. No one knows how many died — the official count is a secret — but it’s widely believed that hundreds if not thousands were slaughtered as soldiers moved to crush the seven-week democracy movement.
The Tiananmen Square massacre forever changed China, and, arguably, the world. But three decades later, the anniversary remains taboo on the mainland, an event off-limits to nearly one-fifth of the planet. Today, semi-autonomous Hong Kong is the only place on Chinese soil that can openly stage large-scale memorials.
“You are not here anymore but you continue to live through every single candle in Victoria park,” Chow Hang-tung, one of the event’s organizers and vice chairman of the pro-Democracy Hong Kong Alliance, said in a eulogy to the victims before an audience filling the park with dim, wavering light. “Through every anti-establishment activity we hold, through the hearts of those who fight for democracy, you will live on.”
Hong Kong still exercises many freedoms unimaginable on the mainland, but these practices have slowly ebbed under the gravitational force of Beijing. Many wonder how long the Communist Party will continue to tolerate publicly defiant acts like the park’s massive vigil. Despite spitting weather and a government warning about thunderstorms issued just ahead of the event, Hong Kongers young and old crammed into the park for the emotionally charged vigil. Organizers estimate that more than 180,000 people joined this year; the 30th anniversary brought some who had never previously attended, in addition to those who reliably turn up every year.
Candy Chan, 35, has attended the vigil every year for the past decade. She is native to Hong Kong, and was only a child when the Tiananmen protests took place, but she feels it’s important to keep the memory alive by exercising her right to commemorate and teaching her daughter about the past. “Hong Kong is the only place [in China] to express freedom,” she tells TIME. “If no one comes out, youngsters will forget this incident.”
Joyce Dang, a civil servant who is also from Hong Kong, remembers following the news reports closely in 1989. She was in college at the time, and recalls feeling shocked and unable to sleep. “For those of us who experienced the event, the memories cannot be erased,” she says, but she worries that the freedom to publicly honor the memory in Hong Kong may not always be guaranteed.
This year’s anniversary took on additional significance in Hong Kong. Fears are running high over proposed revisions to an extradition law that would make it easier for criminal suspects to face trial on the mainland. Critics say the changes will erode the independence of the city’s once-robust legal system, and aid Beijing in targeting political foes. The threat of having to face retribution on the mainland could also have a chilling effect, and silence the full-throated criticisms of the Communist regime that frequently ring out at protests.
John Tsui, a member of the League of Social Democrats political party, likened passing the law to “essentially putting a knife over the heads of everyone in Hong Kong,” claiming it was designed as a means of “restricting the freedom of speech in Hong Kong and freedom to protest, basically anything Beijing doesn’t like.”
“It is going to be used to target anyone not to the PRCs liking,” he tells TIME.
Hong Kong has long been a safe harbor for polarizing political figures, from Sun Yat-Sen and his revolutionaries to Vietnam’s communist leader Ho Chi Minh to American whistle-blower Edward Snowden. During the heady days of idealism that preceded the Tiananmen crackdown, Hong Kong raised funds for the pro-democracy protests. After Beijing began rounding up protest ringleaders, city activists successfully smuggled out more than 400 in a covert effort known as “Operation Yellowbird.”
The city’s reputation as a place of refuge has already diminished after it returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. If the extradition law is passed, as is likely in the coming weeks, it could erase “the firewall between Hong Kong and the mainland,” says Albert Ho, chair of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, which helped orchestrate Operation Yellowbird and now runs the annual Tiananmen vigil.
At the time of the Tiananmen massacre, Hong Kong, then a British colony, saw the gunfire and feared for its future under Chinese rule. According to the 1997 handover terms, Beijing agreed to maintain the city’s autonomy for 50 years under a governing arrangement known as “one country, two systems.” But Beijing’s perceived interference in the city’s political affairs, from the election of the city’s chief executive to the banning of political parties that run afoul of the Communist government, has raised doubts that the deal will hold and deep concerns about what will happen when it expires.
More than two decades after the Union Jack came down, Hong Kong is a city stewing in political disenchantment after its own homegrown democracy movement failed to sway Beijing. The 2014 Umbrella Revolution choked major thoroughfares in the financial hub for 79 days and posed the greatest challenge to Beijing’s authority since Tiananmen, but ultimately, it did not win any major concessions.
Recent events have reinforced fears of Beijing’s tightening grasp. The expulsion of a foreign journalist for hosting a politically charged talk, two Hong Kong activists being granted asylum overseas, and a law that would criminalize disrespecting the national anthem have all stoked a sense of what some might call political apathy, while others see it as pragmatism. Others simply grew up living a life divorced from politics.
Daisy Lee, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate, said what happened at Tiananmen is now “in the past.” Like some other pedestrians mixed in with the masses moving slowly through the busy Causeway Bay neighborhood toward Victoria Park, she said she was just here to do some shopping with a friend and got caught up in the crowd. “We don’t care about it, it doesn’t affect us,” Lee tells TIME, annoyed by the crowds. “I think it’s too many people, I don’t like it.”
Even among the city’s pro-democracy faction the Tiananmen anniversary creates friction. Some see Hong Kong as linguistically and culturally distinct from the mainland, and advocate for focusing on local issues rather than meddling in the history and political sensitivities across the border.
During this year’s anniversary, several student unions decided to revive a forum on the future of Hong Kong instead of participating in the yearly vigil.
Others, including many of the former student campaigners who led the charge during the Umbrella Revolution, see a moral compunction in taking part in the vigil. Even though they were born after Tiananmen, they too are familiar with the consequences of resisting Beijing.
Dozens of activists have been convicted for their role in the struggle for democracy in Hong Kong. During last year’s anniversary, Joshua Wong, the student activist who shot to international fame during the 2014 protests, stressed the importance of remembering June 4th. This year, he is once again behind bars.
The massive turnout for the Tuesday night vigil suggests that the struggle — at least this corner of China — may be tarnished, but is certainly not forgotten. Crowds burst into impassioned chants of “We want justice!” and “Let’s build a democratic China!” Singers sang, and survivors spoke.
Liane Li wasn’t even supposed to be in Beijing on June 4th, she tells the attentive crowd. She was just a college student in Hong Kong when she heard about the movement for Democracy that was swelling in cities across China, so she went to Beijing at the height of the protests to show her solidarity. She said she was warned that authorities would soon clear the square. “But we were in alliance with the Beijing students that were fighting so hard for democracy,” she said, “so we went ahead anyway.”
It wasn’t long before she heard the guns begin to fire; soon there were wounded people everywhere. A medic approached her and told her to flee, begging her to spread the word about the horrors she saw. “Go get help, go home to Hong Kong,” she recalled the woman pleading. “Tell the world what our government is doing.”

The 35 audit firms were auditing more than 300 subsidiaries of the group. The SFIO, after filing the charge sheet against IL&FS Financial Services (IFIN), would start probing IL&FS and ITNL, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said."In the next few days notices would first be served to several individuals and normally followed by submission of files and documents, but the investigators have these in some cases. Depending on what comes out of these, statements of some individuals would be recorded in some cases again for IL&FS and ITNL," said one of the persons quoted earlier.ET has learnt that notices will soon be dispatched to auditors, including EY India, and officials handling these accounts will be called in for questioning. Deloitte Haskins & Sells was the principal auditor for IL&FS till 2016-17 and was replaced by SRBC & Co, an EYaffiliated firm for the next two fiscal years. For ITNL, Deloitte Haskins and Sells was the sole auditor in 2015 and jointly audited along with SRBC & Co in 2016-17. From 2017 to 2019, SRBC took over as sole auditor.About 35 other firms audited financials of the subsidiaries. In the case of IL&FS, ITNL and IFIN, principal auditors only audited part of the accounts and relied on the opinion of auditors of subsidiaries allowed under auditing regulations.69658192 Some of the major Indian firms including Sharp and Tannan, KS Aiyar & Co and MP Chitale were auditors to the subsidiaries. This is one of the areas that could have led to the problem, industry trackers said."The main problem is that in a group of companies, auditors are different firms. As per the charge sheet, evergreening of loans was happening by routing money from one group company to another through an unrelated party, but it would be very difficult for auditor of a single company to know what has happened to the loan after it was disbursed," said Jeenendra Bhandari, partner, MGB & Co.Take the case of IL&FS: Principal auditor SRBC (EY) did not audit 141 subsidiaries with total assets of Rs 1lakh crore and Rs 18,226 crore in revenue. About 26 joint ventures that had a revenue of Rs 3,400 crore and total assets of Rs 18,000 crore were audited by other auditors. Similar situations also prevailed in audits by Deloitte Haskins and Sells and BSR (KPMG) at IL&FS and IFIN in other years."Whenever any audit failure happens, regulators merely look to fine or to punish an audit firm or partner. Since the broad-based structural issues are neither recognised nor addressed, such problems have kept on popping up and will continue to do so" said Raghu Aiyar, CEO, KS Aiyar & Co.One of the issues thrown to the forefront in the audit of IL&FS, ITNL and IFIN is qualifications. As per the Indian auditing regulations, auditors could give qualifications wherever they don't agree to the position taken by the management. In all the three cases the auditors have given the qualifications.
NEW DELHI| MUMBAI: Rural demand for groceries and daily essentials, which showed signs of slowing in the past three quarters, could revive after New Delhi extended the assured income support (PMKisan) scheme for farmers. Expectations that rains would be normal this monsoon season should also lift buying power in the villages. The federal cabinet, in its first meeting after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to power with a stronger mandate, last week decided that the government would cover 145 million farmers under the PM Kisan scheme, and irrespective of their land holdings will transfer Rs 6,000 to their bank accounts. The revised programme will now cover 20 million additional farmers. "Higher MSPs and rural stimulus would put more money in the pockets of rural consumers and boost consumerism. The liquidity situation in the market is improving now and a repo rate cut would further improve the situation," said the homegrown packaged consumer products company Dabur India's chief executive Mohit Malhotra. 69658008 The maker of Vatika shampoo and Real juices, which derives 45% of its overall domestic sales in the rural areas, however flagged unemployment as a concern. "The unemployment rate continues to be high and the government must take decisive steps now to address this issue," Malhotra said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a normal June-September monsoon, while private weather forecasting agency Skymet has pointed to a below-normal monsoon, at 93% of the long period average. Consumption in rural India, which accounts for about a third of the market, has lately outpaced the rate of expansion in cities. Over the past two years, rural growth rates were nearly double of those in urban areas, which have moderated to about 1.1 times last quarter. Sales of branded daily needs in the nation of 1.3 billion people have increasingly relied for growth on the rural hinterland, home to more than 800 million, whose purchase behaviour is largely linked to farm output. The agriculture sector grew 2.9% in FY19, compared to FY18-growth of 5%. "India's food price inflation fell significantly after demonetization and never truly recovered as cash returned to the economy. Farm incomes have diverged from the rest of the economy. There is a stark difference between nominal GDP growth and agriculture sector farm wage growth, which fell below 5% in 2018," Axis Capital wrote in a recent report. However, companies pinning hopes on the government to address farm sector distress said they are accelerating the drive toward lower prices points and direct distribution to boost both volume and value sales. "A stable government itself is a positive. The prediction of normal monsoons and initiative to boost farm incomes will definitely help rural sentiments," said B Krishna Rao, senior category head at Parle Products. The Mumbai-based cookies maker generates more than half its sales in rural India. "Both (monsoon and farm income) are catalysts for growth. Marico's dependence on rural is about a third of India revenue and a fillip to demand in rural augers well for the company and the consumer goods sector," said Vivek Karve, chief financial officer at Marico. ITC, which is aspiring to become India's largest pure-play FMCG firm by 2030, said that it expects better liquidity in the rural economy to translate into higher consumption. "With more cash expected to flow into the rural economy under the PM Kisan scheme, other initiatives spearheaded by the government for the agricultural sector and less uncertainty on the monsoon rains, rural consumers are likely to be more liberal with their spending now, which in turn will provide a boost to rural consumption," an ITC spokesperson said. Researcher Nielsen had forecast in April that the FMCG sector would expand 11-12% in 2019 on account of subdued rural sales, a downward revision from its previous forecast of 13-14%. "While a slight drop is witnessed in urban growth, there is a significant softening of growth trends in rural, which is dampening the overall FMCG industry growth from Q3'18 to Q1'19. Historically, rural has grown 3-5% points faster than urban and the recent slowdown in rural growth also brings the growth closer to the urban growth (rates)," Nielsen had said in its report.
NEW DELHI: In his first set of instructions after taking over, Navy chief Admiral Karambir Singh has sought a cutting down on wasteful expenditure with the pruning of ceremonial practices and ensuring that same standards are met for both officers and men during events. Admiral Singh has asked all ranks to imbibe contemporary social and ceremonial practices by doing away with the VIP culture that had crept into such events over the years. Among the measures to be implemented are cutting down of 'unnecessary ostentation' during official events and visits of senior officers to naval locations. The instructions have gone in the form of an address by the chief to all ranks in the Navy and has been distributed across all locations. The signal was sent on June 3 and is a practice that most service chiefs follow after taking over charge. The officer has said that practices like garlanding and showering of petals on guests, lighting of lamps and functions of a quasi-religious nature should be avoided. 69657968 The Navy chief has said that the practice of lining up of naval officer's families during high profile visits should be done away with and bouquets need not be presented to visiting officers and dignitaries. In an acknowledgement of changing social norms, Admiral Singh has specified that the same standard of meals, drinks and even cutlery should be on offer to all ranks at official events. A number of the instructions focus on cutting off unnecessary expenditure and effort during VIP visits that the chief feels impacts the daily activities carried on at units. Instructing that the number of accompanying staff during VIP visits should be minimal, the chief has done away with the practice of sailors being deployed to open doors and acting as signposts to give directions to guests. The Navy chief has instructed that full designations of officers, along with all their decorations need not be repeatedly mentioned in speeches and juniors are expected to be disciplined and respectful but not subservient. During professional discussions, cheering and clapping after a personnel makes his point is being discouraged and the use of carpets and flowerpots is to be avoided, especially during functions on board warships.
NEW DELHI: Mahindra & Mahindra has returned to the top of the utility vehicle segment in May, wresting a position it had conceded to Maruti Suzuki, on the back of demand for the Marazzo, Alturas and XUV300. Mahindra sold 19,524 utility vehicles last month, compared with 19,152 by the local unit of the Japanese automaker. "We have been able to garner the leadership position in the SUV segment on the back of the successful launch of our three products, namely the Marazzo, Alturas and XUV300, all of which have resonated very well with the consumer. (Sales of) our XUV300 continue to grow at a healthy rate with good booking numbers," said a company spokesperson. Mahindra is hopeful that it could maintain the leadership in the utility vehicle segment as these models continue to see good demand, the spokesperson added. Mahindra, in fact, had taken the top slot in the last quarter of FY19 as well. It had sold 72,413 utility vehicles in the three months through March, as against 69,827 units by Maruti Suzuki, as per the wholesale numbers released by companies. However, Maruti Suzuki took the top slot in the segment with sales of 264,197 units for the fiscal year, and again in April. Shashank Srivastava, executive director (sales and marketing) at Maruti Suzuki, said sales of the Vitara Brezza at the retail level were much better than the wholesale numbers. "At a time, when even retail in the overall industry has declined, Vitara Brezza retail volumes stand at similar levels as last year. Demand for the vehicle on ground remains strong," he said. "Indian customers not only look at the initial acquisition cost, but at the total cost of ownership which, given our extensive network, aftersales support, availability of spares, gives us an advantage over competition." He said the company would continue to align its strategy as per customer needs to maintain its leadership position in the segment.
India's cement industry, the second-biggest in the world, is set to cement its pricing power locally after a prolonged phase of capacity overhang that had prevented previous attempts at increasing realisations.Last fiscal year was favourable for the cement industry for several reasons. First, the industry clocked double-digit volume growth for the first time in the past nine years. Second, even capacity utilisation, which reached close to 71%, improved 5% on year — the highest in the past seven years. Third, cement prices climbed about 2% in FY19. Fuel costs also declined, in lockstep with crude prices. This year, the industry is expected to build on the achievements of FY19 and enhance realisations, by 2-5%. Infrastructure investments by the government should aid that effort. In each of the next five years, the Central government is expected to build about 6,000 km length of roads. Besides this, the low-cost housing segment is also likely to boost cement demand. Analysts point out that the government's investments in infrastructure and its focus on the pace of execution should help sustain cement prices within a favourable range.69658278 Sustainability of cement prices would determine the attractiveness of cement stocks. Given the present situation, companies in the northern, central, and eastern regions are likely to show better revenue growth for FY20. UltraTech Cement, Shree Cement, Ramco, JK Lakshmi Cement, and Orient Cement are expected to report higher realisations of at least 4% in FY20.In the past four months, cement stocks are up in the range of 35-40% and trading at premium valuation to historical averages. Premium valuations are expected to be undergirded by expectations of higher volumes and realisations in FY20.

By Prathamesh MallyaThe Brent crude price made a high of $75.60 on April 25 and from there it has corrected to around $61, a fall of around 20 per cent. The WTI Crude has fallen from high of around 66.60 April 23 to $53.MCX Crude oil prices have also reflected the same trend falling by around 21.5 per cent in the same time frame. From the Rs 4,692 per barrel level on April 23 to Rs 3,686 on June 3.What led to the fall?Trade tensions has rapidly heightened in the recent times with the US and China at loggerheads and Donald Trump threatening to impose tariffs on Mexico, a key trade partner and major supplier of crude oil.The US president has vowed to ratchet up tariffs and according to the plan it would impose a 5 per cent tariff on Mexican imports starting June 10 and increase monthly, up to 25 per cent on October 1.Moreover, additional levies by Beijing on the majority of US imports on a $60 billion target list took effect on June 1 in response to Washington's move this month to slap further tariffs of up to 25 per cent on $200 billion of Chinese goods. The balance in oil market -- is it real?Out of the total global world supplies of around 100 mbpd, almost 30 mbpd is supplied by the Opec nations, 12.5 mbpd by the US, around 11.15 mbpd by Russia. Which means 50 per cent of the total output is supplied by these three gigantic producers. The balance in oil market has been disrupted on account of US sanctions on Iran and Venezuela, which has taken away almost around 4.5 mbpd of supply at risk from these two countries. However, the oil market is not in any scenario wherein there is deficiency. The loss of Iranian oil exports is compensated by the increase in the US oil production, which has been steadily rising from around 10 mbpd since mid 2018 to around 12.5 mbpd as on April 2019. Russian oil production has been steadily rising from around 10 mbpd since 2018 to around 11.5 mbod, which is an increase of around 1.5 mbpd from its original levels. In totality, the loss of oil coming out from Iran and Venezuela has been compensated by the US and Russia, hence, no geopolitical risk premium can be attached out of sanctions on these two nations.OutlookOil market is sufficiently balanced and hence the fall in oil prices in the recent weeks is totally justified. Going forward, the trade tensions will continue to drive the volatility in all the risk assets including oil. Weaker dollar, which can be influenced by the negative effects of China putting tariffs on US imports, is something that investors will closely watch for. The new puzzle of the game is US threatening to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico, which can harm sentiment and pressurise oil prices. One thing is for sure that the bears are trying to strengthen their grip on oil market and with each passing day, the intensifying trade war will further harm the demand side structure, in turn, falling oil prices. If the dust around the trade war settles down, oil prices should find support at around $50 zone for WTI (CMP: $53/bbl) crude while Brent at $57 (CMP: $61/bbl).MCX oil prices will find support at around Rs 3,450 mark in a fortnight. This clearly tells us that there is still more room for oil prices to fall in the international as well as domestic markets.(Prathamesh Mallya is Chief Analyst, Non-Agri Commodities and Currencies at Angel Broking. A number of companies in the UK have unfilled 'digital vacancies' with some being unable to find employees with basic computer skills, including writing documents and using spreadsheets, according to a report by TCS and Confederation of British Industry (CBI).The study, titled 'Delivering Skills for the New Economy', surveyed 250 companies. It highlighted that while the companies in the UK expect requirement for digital skills to skyrocket in the next three years, less than one-third of the respondents were confident of being able to meet those needs.Over two-third (67 per cent) of the companies surveyed said they have unfilled digital vacancies."One in five firms is unable to find employees with basic computer skills - including writing documents and using spreadsheets. Advanced digital skills are in greater demand in all sectors, with 55 per cent of larger firms reporting challenges in recruiting software engineers and 61 per cent struggling to hire data analysts," it added. The majority of companies surveyed said they are taking action to tackle their digital skills shortages, with 56 per cent expressing confidence they are spending enough on addressing their digital skills needs right now."Around 60 per cent of larger firms surveyed said their digital skill needs are set to skyrocket over the next three to five years, but less than a third (31 per cent) are confident that the UK business community will be able to access the digital skills they need in the next three to five years," it said.According to a House of Commons Science and Technology Committee Report, Digital Skills Crisis, 2016, the UK is losing out on 63 billion pounds a year as companies struggle to find people with digital skills. This could jeopardise the UK's competitiveness, deter investment and limit people's ability to make the most of the opportunity technology brings."ln today's digital economy, there are two key focuses for sustainable talent development: encouraging students to understand what it takes to pursue a successful career in technology, and giving employees the best possible training opportunities," TCS VP and Country Head (UK and lreland) Shankar Narayanan said.He added that the Mumbai-based company is focused on developing STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills in communities all around the UK."This new research with the CBI makes it clear that for the UK economy to remain competitive, it's important to urgently invest in re-skilling the current workforce and inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in technology," he said.CBI recommended that the government must set an ambitious target for the entire UK workforce to have basic digital skills by 2025, and work with businesses to engage with relevant academic and technical education institutions.
