Pathfinder Online releases new alpha client Posted: 06 Jul 2014 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Patches, Sandbox, Pathfinder Online Pathfinder Online alpha testers have a shiny new client to test out, an upgrade that hopefully will distract them from the requisite XP and inventory wipe. The new client includes better lighting, animation fixes, coin drops from mobs, additional utility feats, and a better distribution of resource nodes. NPCs have also been given a speed boost to cut down on the ease of kiting by players. I love finding these scattered around the world because they invite my imagination to be a part of the experience instead of spelling it out for me.Reader Chiara came across our first screenshot of the week here in Elder Scrolls Online, and it brought out strong emotions: "I don't really know what this man's story is -- but I can't help but wonder about it since I've first seen him. Did he die there? Did someone arrange his skeleton? I've no idea, but the scene just struck me as incredibly sad." Maybe he was keeping a vigil for a loved one. Maybe that vigil is not yet over. Who knows? Continue reading One Shot: The eternal vigil One Shot: The eternal vigil originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 06 Jul 2014 10:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds. |
The Daily Grind: What untried portion of an MMO have you been playing lately? Posted: 06 Jul 2014 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, PvP, Opinion, Free-to-Play, The Daily Grind, Star Wars: The Old Republic So it's double XP week in Star Wars: The Old Republic right now, and I'm pretty sick of the Kuat Drive Yards flashpoint. I popped into a Galactic Starfighter queue out of sheer boredom, and while it's a far cry from the space sims I love, it was a pleasant diversion. What about you, Massively readers? What previously uninteresting or untried portion of an MMO have you discovered of late? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Make My MMO: June 29 - July 5, 2014 Posted: 05 Jul 2014 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Business Models, MMO Industry, New Titles, News Items, Crowdfunding, Make My MMO This week in MMO crowdfunding... not a whole lot happened, to tell you the truth. Oh sure, the usual space sim suspects made additional bank, and despite a failed Kickstarter drive, indie sandbox MMORPG Shards Online soldiered ahead with its development roadmap and a plan to release a playable alpha by the end of the year.Other than that, though, it was fairly quiet. Indie firm Universe Projects did alert us about its Voidspace Kickstarter, which looks to fund a sci-fi sandbox MMO that has already been Greenlit on Steam. Further details are available past the cut. Continue reading Make My MMO: June 29 - July 5, 2014 Make My MMO: June 29 - July 5, 2014 originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 05 Jul 2014 20:00:00 EST. The Repopulation allows you to queue up 100 recipes at a go Posted: 05 Jul 2014 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Betas, Sci-Fi, Dev Diaries, Sandbox, Crafting, The Repopulation If you consider that The Repopulation will feature crafting so heavily, is it any surprise that the team is working hard to beef up that portion of the game during its alpha test? In its end-of-June update, the devs say that they've added a batching system into the game that allows players to queue up 100 items at once. Even so, doing the job by hand will generate better results, albeit over a longer time frame.Other changes in the game include improvements to harvesting info and the inquiry system. Players can now use the latter to generate missions to take camps in order to get better resources. According to the letter, The Repopulation is "getting closer" to transitioning into beta testing. Landmark video goes spelunking in caves Posted: 05 Jul 2014 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Video, Free-to-Play, Dev Diaries, Sandbox, Landmark Caves are boring, right? WRONG! Well, wrong if you're in Landmark, at least. Caves are a relatively new and unfinished feature to the game, and in a new video, the developers attempt to explain what makes them an exciting part of the exploration process.Landmark's caves are layered on top of each other, with each cave system corresponding to the surface biome. Right now, players can delve into only the first tier of caves, but in the future they'll be able to go as far as three tiers down in the search for treasure and crafting mats. You can watch the full developer video after the jump! WoW Archivist: Beta surprises from World of Warcraft's history Posted: 05 Jul 2014 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: World of Warcraft, Betas, Fantasy, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, WoW Archivist WoW Archivist is a biweekly column by WoW Insider's Scott Andrews, who explores the secrets of World of Warcraft's past. What did the game look like years ago? Who is etched into WoW's history? What secrets does the game still hold? It first appeared on our sister site on July 2nd and is included here by permission.Last week, we launched into the newest beta in WoW's history -- its sixth! -- for Warlords of Draenor. It's an exciting time for the game. Every beta has its surprises, good and bad. New things that were never announced. Prior announcements that changed unexpectedly. We've already had a number of surprises in the Warlords beta: the faction hub shift to Ashran, cross-faction auctions, and the removal of guild leveling. Beta is just ramping up. We are sure to encounter more than one surprise over the next few months as we test the Draenor experience and gear up for the expansion's launch. Let's take a look back at the previous five betas and examine some of the twists that greeted testers -- and often shocked the WoW community. Caveat: I'm excluding storyline surprises.
