The Road to Mordor: A tour of LotRO's update 14 and majestic Gondor Posted: 05 Jul 2014 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Patches, Free-to-Play, The Road to Mordor With Update 13, Volume III, and the good nation of Rohan in our rear-view mirrors, we now turn ahead to see Gondor, next six exits, straight ahead. Lord of the Rings Online players have a lot to be excited for when Update 14 arrives, not the least of which is a new country that was central to the events of The Return of the King.Update 14 is scheduled to release on Monday, July 14th, because marketers always get a special little thrill when they match up similar numbers. It's a pretty sizable content patch that's almost a mini-expansion, with five additional levels, a new epic book, three questing regions, well over 100 quests, and a new essence system for gear. This past week I sat down with Turbine to get a whirlwind tour of what lies beyond Rohan, and after seeing it, I think that LotRO fans have good reason to hope for an exciting summer. The Daily Grind: Do you like ordering NPC minions around? Posted: 05 Jul 2014 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous Buried among the announcement of RIFT: Nightmare Tides was the addition of collectible minions to the game. Players will supposedly be able to order minions around on various tasks to benefit their characters, which sounds pretty awesome to me.It also seems to be the latest entry in a growing movement of player-controlled NPC minions in MMOs. Star Trek Online has the duty officer system, Neverwinter has a cool web game that uses one's companions, SWTOR allows you to boss around crew members, and Warlords of Draenor looks to have something similar with its garrisons. Do you like this type of feature? Is it enjoyable to send your loyal subjects out to do your bidding even if you're not in the game?

What, you want a sandbox on top of that? Fine; here's UemeU and stop bothering me.Omnigon Games recently announced that alpha-dwelling UemeU is now on Steam Greenlight and can be downloaded for free on the official website. The project draws upon popular sandbox games such as Little Big Planet and Minecraft to give players the ability to create their own worlds and stories. The main claim to fame here is an impressive depth that goes beyond the simpler tools that its competition provides. You can check out one of the avatar videos for UemeU after the break to get an idea for the potential that this title holds. Continue reading UemeU goes deeper than the typical sandbox

Final Fantasy XIV posts preliminary notes for patch 2.3 Posted: 04 Jul 2014 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Patches, News Items, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, Subscription While it's a long weekend in the US, fans of Final Fantasy XIV will have to wait until next Tuesday to enjoy all of the content added in patch 2.3. But you can get a head start of sorts by checking out the preliminary patch notes. Sure, the notes list all of the features that everyone knows about by now, like Frontline and new dungeons, but there are some gems in there for players that we hadn't expected.Players will soon be able to augment artifact armor and the upgraded form of said armor so that the equipment may be colored as desired. Inn rooms will include a new toy chest for playing minigames, starting with the Parley minigame last seen in 1.0. There's also a wide-scale revamp of Gladiator/Paladin weapons; knives and daggers have been removed from those classes and will be available to Rogues/Ninjas in the future. Check out the full patch notes on the official site. [Thanks to Kythas for the tip!]

Warlords of Draenor previews Frostfire Ridge Posted: 04 Jul 2014 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: World of Warcraft, Betas, Fantasy, Lore, Previews, Subscription As the closed beta for World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor rages on, Blizzard has a pair of previews up for one of the expansion's zones: Frostfire Ridge.Frostfire Ridge's biome features a fun combination of snow-covered wastes and towering volcanoes, so whether your tastes run hot or cold, this place will have you covered. The zone is what will eventually become the Blade's Edge Mountains in Burning Crusade's version of the zone, and here players will be helping Thrall's daddy survive among a closing net of enemies. Even among such hostile environs, players will find a fortress of solitude. The Horde garrison will be established in this zone, offering a base from which to build a sanctuary and an army.
