Razer CEO on Blade Delay: We’re ‘Terrible’ at Anticipating Product Demand

The New Razer Blade (2014)

The 3K gaming laptop is but the latest Razer product to get delayed in recent times

Unsheathed in March as the world's thinnest and highest-res 14-inch gaming laptop, the New Razer Blade was expected to begin shipping in mid-April but even many of those who pre-ordered the 3K notebook on the very first day have yet to receive it. Now, the Razer Blade family is no stranger to delays, with the original Blade laptop also getting beset by a similarly frustrating delay. As he had done back then, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan once again took to Facebook this past Friday to apologize from the very bottom of his heart.

In a Facebook post steeped in candor, Tan admitted to having considerable trouble andticipating comsumer demand for its products.

"Each time we announce a new product – we end up having some of our customers wait for months before they get their pre-orders," Tan wrote. "A good example is the latest Razer Blade – we announced it in March '14 and there are many who pre-ordered on the day of launch who haven't received their units even till today.  I wish I could claim that it's a one off situation and we'll do better the next time – but I'll be honest, we've been screwing up on anticipating demand for a long time – for the past couple of years, every time we launch a new product, demand just far outstrips the supply. "

The company, according to Tan, has tried a number of things to prevent such delays — including increasing manufacturing capacity and switching to phased product roll-outs — but to no avail.

"We suck at this. I suck at this. I apologize to all of you who have had to wait for ages each time we launch a new product. And this isn't the first time I'm apologizing for this, I'm afraid, but I do intend to change the system so that we can launch products better here at Razer and have more happy customers who can get their hands on our products."
