General: Gamer Safety Alliance Plays Host to Gamer Safety Week Posted: 10 Feb 2014 06:13 AM PST This week marks the beginning of Gamer Safety Week hosted by Merchant Risk Council's (MRC) sister organization, Gamer Safety Alliance. Recent history has shown increasing activity in the hacking front and the loss of player information. To that end, the goal of the week's event is to provide concrete ways that game companies can keep their players' information secure. |

The Division: Pair of Studios Team Up for Development Posted: 10 Feb 2014 04:02 AM PST Tom Clancy's The Division is being developed by a pair of Ubisoft subsidiary studios that have teamed up. Both Ubisoft Massive and Ubisoft Reflections are working on the game, each studio with its own set of directives. For instance, Reflections is working on game systems including main NPCs, the city of Manhattan, and portions of the online feature system. |

General: Pillars of Eternity will Slip Past First Half 2014 Release Posted: 09 Feb 2014 12:09 PM PST According to a new interview at Eurogamer, Obsidian Entertainment's Pillars of Eternity will not make the "first half 2014" release date predicted on its Kickstarter crowd sourcing page. According to the project lead, Josh Sawyer, the game originally started as a moderately sized project that expanded exponentially due to the higher than expected revenues gained through Kickstarter. As a result, much more was added, also adding to development time. |
World of Warcraft: Free-to-Play Fatigue: Are Micro-transactions Losing Their Appeal? Posted: 08 Feb 2014 03:32 PM PST This week, Blizzard announced that its subscription base for World of Warcraft rose by more than 100,000. Since all logic says that a near-decade-old MMO should be tailing off, that's something of a surprise--especially since game industry augurs have spent the last year or so predicting the death of subscription-based games. Is the turnaround just a fluke, or could it mean gamers aren't as gung-ho about free-to-play as business analysts say they are? |
